Great sushi in southwest Colorado?? Yes there is! It's right here in Cortez. Great atmosphere and some wonderful sushi. My fave is the San Juan roll. Yum! With an order of tempura shrimp you get a house dipping sauce of prickly pear jalapeño sauce. Again, it's a perfect match for about anything you want to dip. Finally, if you like nigiri they are very generous with the servings!

Driving thru on the way back from Mesa Verde and literally stumbled into this gem of a place. While the outside makes it look like a hole in the wall sushi place, when opening the doors the amazing smells of goodness slap you in the face. Trying a variety of dishes, as we just hiked for hours, there was a toss up between the Thai styles lettuce wraps and the chocolate bombs. I think it helped greatly that our server was humorous and was all about helping to choose what to stuff our face with. Will be returning to try more of the menu!

Ate a ton here. I enjoyed the ginger beer with whiskey drink served in a cold copper mug. I also enjoyed the thai-style mussels (served with wonton crisps--very good!), and the various sushi rolls. The bartender was cool, was a great storyteller, and was overall good peeps.

Great little restaurant! I have to say it was the first place we went after our arrival not really knowing what to expect. The food was great, drinks were great and the service was wonderful!! Our waiter knew the area and gave us just the information of the area we were looking for!!

Top notch all around! Can't go wrong with Stonefish. The ambiance is exceptional, along with the staff and the food and drinks are divine. My favorite place in Cortez!

We were traveling through Cortez and were surprised by how good our dinner was. We tried the pad Thai and the phat bowl. The phat bowl was udon noodles, veggies, red curry chicken & sweet potato straw. Home run dish, just the right amount of heat. Pad Thai was equally as good. We certainly would go again.

Decent sushi, especially for a rural location in Colorado. Tried several rolls; none were mind blowingly good, but all were well made nonetheless. Be aware that happy hour is literally 1 hour long (4:30-5:30 pm).

Tasty southwestern/American-style sushi in a pleasant atmosphere; would be even better if the prices were a bit lower. We noted some very unusual rolls on the menu (cooked chicken? cooked beef tenderloin?) that we did not try. Tried the Stonefish, Farmer's Market, and Big Bob rolls. Our favorite by far was the Big Bob roll.

The Miso soup is excellent, as is the Farmer's Roll. Try the Ahi sandwich too-the Ahi is thick and juicy. Ambience is casual but contemporary and comfortable. The staff are all friendly and helpful about any questions you have as well. This is a great lunch/locals' spot, but if you are planning on going for dinner, call ahead and reserve a table.

I met up with a few coworkers here for dinner. There were only a few tables available inside but a lot of tables outside. I guess nobody wanted to eat outside on the night we came here. They lit a candle to repel bugs and it appeared to work. I was told about this place several times from coworkers and from my client that the food here was good. Their menu had a lot of sushi and a few appetizers, entrees, and desserts. I usually get the spicy tuna roll at any sushi place as my baseline whether the sushi was good or not; however, I didn't order that here. I figured since I won't be back here in the future that I would order a bunch of food for myself. I ordered the Ginger Pork Potstickers ($7), Sesame Seared Chicken Breast ($15), the Sushi Pizza roll ($12) with spicy tuna as a choice of meat, and Green Tea Ice Cream ($4). They had phat bowls to order which sounded good to me. It took a while before the food came out. The Ginger Pork Potstickers were delicious and the prickly pear sweet chili sauce complemented the potstickers. A couple of my coworkers tried the sauce and said it was good. The Sushi Pizza roll came out next and it looked good. It was interesting because I've never seen a sushi roll like that. The waitress said she liked it because of the different textures involved with one bite and I had to agree with her. It was good and I recommend it if you're wanting something different out of your sushi. The Sesame Seared Chicken Breast came out and it was good. The teriyaki sauce might have been a little too much but the rice balanced it out. That would be a safe choice if you didn't know what else to order. Finally, the Green Tea Ice Cream came out and that was a great way to end the meal. Stonefish was a good sushi restaurant and I recommend coming by if you like sushi. There was a lot of sushi choices on the menu. While this would be more on the expensive side for some, it would be worth the money in my opinion.

We were tourists passing through on a late Tuesday night. Having lived on both coasts, I've had some pretty excellent sushi and don't have high expectations for most land locked states. Maybe it's because of this, but HOLY mother of pearl... the roll I got here was awesome! I ordered the Samurai Crunch roll fully expecting a tuna roll with scallops, tobiko, sauce and crunch to come layered on top à la all the other sushi restaurants I've ever been to. Refreshingly, the scallops, tuna, and avocado were rolled inside, followed by thin slices of cucumber on the outside, and the tobiko and crunch tossed together before becoming the garnish on top. The end result was a delicious roll that held together in my chopsticks beautifully. Scallops tasted fresh, too. For dessert, I wanted something light and refreshing, so I was thinking the green tea ice cream, but I was also curious about the tempura banana. The restaurant was happy to serve the banana with green tea ice cream (I assume the default flavor would have been vanilla), and the combo was anything but light and refreshing... and 100% worth it. Tempura banana was the bomb! The sushi menu is more trendy/modern than traditional, but it's creative and whoever is putting these together is winning at life. I think our server's name was Katie and she was spectacular. The only con was the Pad Thai dish my husband ordered. Again, it was a fresh take on a traditional dish, but it was only "okay" and I agree with another reviewer that it seemed a little small, maybe compared to the quantity an authentic Thai restaurant might serve. All in all, I would recommend this place to a friend.

Sushi in the desert is a sketchy proposition, but the Yelp reviews convinced us that Stonefish was a reasonably safe bet. So, we stopped in after a long day of hiking and climbing through Mesa Verde. We were tired and presumably fairly dusty, which may account for why the hostess immediately offered to seat our group outside - ie, not in the hopelessly trendy main restaurant. Maybe she thought we'd like it better - the look of slight disdain may be one she gives to everyone. But, seated in the rear courtyard, where the staff doesn't seem do venture very often and the noisier patrons are seated, I think not. The courtyard itself is nice, with a large wall on one side painted a bright periwinkle, and another one a cheerful apple green, giving life to an area that would otherwise be a lifeless cement square with a few widely spaced wood trestle tables. The hostess only brought three menus for our group of four, promised to bring another, and didn't. And that was kind of how the evening went. We ordered food, and one person's sushi arrived before the appetizers we had ordered for the group - but no dish provided for soy sauce, and we had to ask for chopsticks. Then, appetizers arrived, but not plates, which we had to ask for. Other food arrived in similarly haphazard fashion, as though the idea of courses had not occurred to anyone there. It's tempting to think that perhaps it was just the kitchen being backed up, or some items taking longer than others, but the restaurant was not even half full, and the item that arrived last, after several inquiries from us, was a spider roll. In a sushi restaurant. The good news? The food was exceptionally good - top-rate sushi, delicious crispy calamari, a fantastic prickly pear chili sauce, and shrimp tempura with a batter that was incomparably light and crispy. The waiter was clearly trying his best to manage the situation and keep the various groups in his station content. I hope that Stonefish can correct its issues - the food is good enough that they'll have people driving for miles if they do.

Server was very nice but the sushi was just ok. As my wife noticed, nearly everything had something spicy mixed in - which leaves you wondering if they are trying to mask the flavor of the fish rather than complement.

Food = 4 (super small portions and rolls... nigiri 2 pcs = 7.95!!! Wow?) Price = 2 (I realize we're a long way from the ocean... but, the prices here are crazy high) Experience = 3 (nice bar service... but, the cost doesn't match the food or experience)

I had the pad thai, and while it was OK, the main problem was that the serving size was way too small and I went away feeling hungry.

Unlike a lot of these kinds of places, I can't tell you that the options outside of the sushi are that great because I wasn't blown away. But for a town of so few people, this place really did comport itself with the level of a place in a much, much larger place. Best of it all, it gave the group with me who don't get to "big city" fare often a chance to experience a variety of sushi options that were presented pretty well. There is a pretty darn long wait, that whittled our group down considerably, but I think having a long wait is probably better than not ever having people in there; so that was fine. Also the service was top-notch to boot. If you find yourself in town, it's worth checking out if you're in a sushi mood.

Excellent sushi. Came here based on the many excellent reviews on Yelp! Did not disappoint. The Stonefish and Zetroc house rolls are just plain awesome. Fresh ingredients and rolls made in front of you. Full bar with some interesting looking house drinks. They make their mojitos fresh. Hot and cold running sake. Only downside is that they need a bigger space. We walked in at 6 p.m on a Saturday and all the tables were full. We were able to get two seats at the bar (which we preferred anyway). If you want a table, I would recommend calling ahead. My girfriend said "We should move here and then come here every night." High praise from her. 4 rolls, 2 small carafes of hot sake, 2 mixed drinks = $40

I had the salmon entree with Delores pale ale. Stonefish is big on presentation but the salmon could have been a little fresher and the sauce should have been under the fish, not under the vegetables. A near miss for a five- star meal. The beer was excellent but a bit strong--one pint is enough if you are driving. .

Great service. Waitress was on top of it and wasn't rushy or impatient. Definitely friendly and welcoming to outsiders like us. Food was quite attractive and appetizing. The sushi chef made the rolls right and well garnished. Most of the rolls have avocado, but other than that, they made my day. Their standard and quality is comparable to that of Los Angeles' 5-star yelp sushi restaurants but at a pretty affordable price. Will definitely come back one day!

Considering this is Cortez, this is an amazingly good option. The quality of the several restaurants on this block, present a wide variety of excellent dining in one district

The food was good, but far from traditional. There appears to be a heavy American influence in most of the dishes. Some will like it, others will be less impressed. Personally, I felt I received less food than I should have for the price. Overall it was an enjoyable experience and the ambiance was very modern and trendy but comfortable.

For a town this size this is an amazing option. Always fresh and great service. Not as many options for rolls as some other places. But what they do, they do well!

This is my go-to place for dinner in town! The service is on top of things, and I have never had more than a 5 minute wait to be seated. I could honesty eat a chicken rice Phat Bowl with Prickly Pear Sweet Chili sauce. The Vegas rolls are also to die for. I could eat here every night.

Very nice sushi! We had some rolls, pot stickers and steak. Really good food, service and outstanding Mojitos. An unexpected pleasure in this rural Colorado town.

What an accidental find. My co-workers and I tried to go to the Pepperhead which is in the same shopping center as the Stonefish. They were closed. So as a next option I suggested we go to the Stonefish. The decor is pleasant and the menu is simple. There are options for those that like sushi and those who would rather have something more cooked. I tried the Citrus Soy Salmon and loved it. It was just enough and had a nice flavor combination. The sweet potato nest was a nice touch. We shared an order of the California rolls (which was a happy hour item). Our server was nice and the rest of the staff was friendly. I would comeback in a heartbeat. What a nice dinner after braving LaVeta and Wolf Creek passes that were both snowpacked and icy.

I had salmon with citrus soy sauce. Incredibly good! In fact as good as some of the Japanese food that I've had in California. Their secret - their fish in shiped overnight. The seared tuna sashimi was also very good. And the cocktails!

Great sushi & more! Enjoyed the spicy edamame to start & the Volcano & Stonefish rolls were amazing! Great decor, service, and sake-would come here again in a heartbeat !

My girlfriend and I stopped in a couple of times over the holidays while we were driving through Cortez. Stonefish provided great, inventive rolls with both lovely fish options and added character from ingredients like jalapeno and mango. The service was friendly and prompt and the atmosphere was an oasis of asian pacific comfort in the middle of the southwest. We especially liked that one of our rolls came with seaweed salad draped over the top. Happy hour prices were great and we drove out of Cortez very happy - twice. Thanks Stonefish!

One of the best restaurants in Cortez, hands down. Comfortable ambience, and the food is a cut above what you will find elsewhere in town. Fish is flown in fresh daily. Straight-up sushi & nigiri are on offer, but the place is really known for its delightful, whimsical rolls. Best of all, this is one of the only places in the 4 Corners that has a commitment to serving sustainably harvested seafood. On any given night the place is filled with locals, from hipsters to farmers. Easy on the pocketbook, too. Highly recommended...and if there are people in your party who don't like seafood (!!), not to worry, there are a few chicken and beef dishes available, too.

Stonefish opened in 2010 amid speculation that a sushi joint would never make it in Cortez. Well, it has, and it's because of the wonderful food, great staff and comfortable atmosphere. Their only drawback is that they're only open on Tuesday and Wednesday for lunch. Excellent rolls, the crab cakes are killer, and their seaweed salad is simply wonderful. The atmosphere is casual, open and friendly, and so relaxing that it has made me late getting back to work more than once.

Being from the Northwest where there are many good sushi restaurants, it was a surprise to fins one in Cortez! Good service and food and reasonably priced.

This place is awesome. great sushi, friendly service, traditional or american seating, and. oh yes - the sushi. I was surprised to find such delicious sushi in the desert! The high roller was the bomb, the stoner - ehh not so good. but everything else was reallly good. i left happy.

Great volcano roll with lobster and the seaweed salad was good. Though our sashimi platter (Sea of Cortez) tasted great, there was nothing to the presentation on the plate and our waiter did not inform us what the three fish were (it's a chef's choice entree). Would go back again and try more specialty rolls.

The food was very good and original, reasonably priced. Very pleasant atmosphere. We got a roll that was on special, Vegas Roll, and noodle bowl with chicken and peanut sauce. Everything was very delicious, including the locally brewed beer. Our server was Shanna and she exceptionally good.

Sushi in Cortez! I really like to drop in for lunch! I wish they were open for lunch more days. They use top-notch products, locals beers on tap, fine liquors, and sake. Plop down and put away some really good rolls, sushi, and sashimi.

One of my favorite places to eat in Cortez! When you walk in, you could be anywhere, New York, San Francisco...The food is always excellent and there are a lot of options even if you don't like sushi. Everything from the appetizers to the desserts is worth a try and it's all at a reasonable price. The staff and service is fast and pleasant. It's a great place for cocktails before or after dinner as well. I can't recommend Stonefish highly enough! It's a must eat anytime you're in Cortez.
