Food was excellent, atmosphere casual, service good, lunch menu seemed to be priced appropriately.

One of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever eaten in. I stopped in here randomly while visiting Pikes Peak. The mole sauce is out of this world, as is the coctel de camarones. What sets it apart the most is the outstanding Margaritas. They are not at all "syrupy" like in many restaurants, they are strong and refreshing, and taste like they are made with natural cane sugar or something. It's the way margaritas are supposed to be. Anyway, go to this restaurant.

Very, Very good food and a family friendly environment. It's family owned with decent food and a VERY good margarita. As Theresa said, the chile relienos are absolutely delicious. Very good Mexican food in an old Taco bell building. Very good!

We had been there a couple of times previously when the food was pretty good, but we haven't been there for a while. But when we went last night we were very disappointed. The chips were stale and did not taste very good. My chicken enchilada was bland and the rest of the food was bland also work. The margarita even tasted sour. it was like a 10 ounce margarita and we were charged $7.25! We will not go back there again.

This is our go-to Mexican restaurant. We have been coming here for about 10 years. We have spent birthdays on the front patio, and bring all our out-of-town guests who always ask to come back next time they visit. The charm begins with the family who owns and operates the place, housed in an old adobe Taco Bell building. Lively decorations inside and out make the atmosphere feel warm and inviting. The lady of the house always remembers what I like to drink from her vast selection of tequilas. She often delights in bringing me something new to try. Our meals are always well prepared, consistently tasty and a good value. The salsa rocks, but I do wish they would change the chips. They aren't that great, but then again, I use them to scoop up that yummy salsa.

Terrible. Store bought chips, frozen store bought taquitos, store bought margarita mix with chunks of lime rind and seeds. Can't believe I paid 50$ for frozen store bought food.

Drove by this place everyday for over 3 years and thought one of these days I'm gonna try it, what a mistake. The first thing you see is the specials on a chalkboard that ranged from 15.99 to 18.99, for that night anyway, they must think a special means raise the price. A little intimidated by the shock of the specials we continued on in hopes of some better menu prices but soon found out that wasn't to be. As mentioned in other reviews it appeared we were served chips from a bag and the salsa was way hot. We both ordered the taco plate with 3 tacos, rice and beans 11.99 (cheapest combo on the menu). In hopes that maybe at least the portions would be of a decent size we were again disappointed, a little line of beans and a little line of rice 3 very small tacos with very little meat and a lot of lettuce, pretty flavorless! ! Taco Bell would have been a better choice and a hell of a lot cheaper!

When I go to a restaurant I only have a few expectations. This restaurant didn't meet any of them. The waitress took our order and delivered the food. The food was awful and she never returned. There are no refills, but even if there were the chances of seeing your waitress again is slim to none. She had three other tables, nothing that should have inhibited her from doing her job. The meal was ridiculously priced for the quality of food.

My favorite Mexican food in town. Sometimes it is better than other times, but when Chef Jorge is on his game, this is as good as it gets. Far & away the best cheese enchiladas, killer good rellenos and I am not usually fan of pork mole' but this stuff is amazing!

This place is amazing! Best chili relleno and enchiladas! Great margaritas. Love that the chef comes out and says hello. Not sure what's going on with the chips, but that's okay since the main plates are so amazing. Recommend highly ! Just don't drive by it!

I was pretty disappointed. Yelp gave it four stars, but I saw no reason to give it more than two. The food wasn't anything special. The salsa was good but served with the ballpark kind of chips. The one waitress wasn't anything special, provided minimal interaction, and was not overly friendly. The place itself is kind of a run down place that's got a LOT of decorations for a small building. The hours of the place are quite random as well. It was worth a try because others speak so highly, but I was disappointed overall.

Overall our favorite Mexican in town. I almost always get the spinach enchiladas that usually come with a faintly lemony green sauce. I also like the tacos a great deal. My son and husband love the chicken enchiladas. And we all like their table salsa--balanced flavors with fresh cilantro. We also like the sauce they have in a squeeze bottle that we have to ask for. It's hotter. I happen to think the Margaritas taste too much like sweet and sour mix, but they have a nice cold beers.

Fridays and Saturdays the owner makes the MOST phenomenal chile rellenos you'll ever have the pleasure of tasting! Wow!! A great neighborhood favorite!

I went here with high hopes after reading the reviews. My two friends I went with ended up with food poisoning from the ceviche they have on Friday nights. I just wasn't that impressed with the food. One thing that really turned me off were the cheap tortilla chips that they served. It seemed weird that they make their own salsa and then serve it with those Dorito style round chips.

Family run, best Mexican food in Colorado springs. Marg's are the best anywhere. Food is fantastic, don't miss Friday night chilli rellanos with flown for desert. Been going for years. Highly recommended.

I really wanted to give La Unica a better review. My parents raved about this place when they took my boyfriend and I this week. They said they love the rellenos and the mole is the best in town. With high hopes, my boyfriend (a connoisseur of Tex Mex) ordered the rellenos and I passed over my old stand by cheese enchiladas for the mole. I was very disappointed when my mole arrived. It was topped with the traditional sesame seeds, but the chicken was served in small chunks rather than a full breast or leg. The mole itself was not so hot. It didn't have great flavor and was so runny- almost like a broth. Traditional mole is much thicker and lingers on the chicken. I had to search this sauce out on my plate and even then the flavor was lacking. I had a bite of the rellenos- made with pobalnos instead of green chiles, and they were pretty good. A little al dente for my taste but overall good. The enchiladas turned out to the the real winner- they have a smoky cinnamon infused red sauce. La Unica is a cute spot but the food is just ok. If you go, I don't recommend the mole.

Finally!!!!! Authentic real Mexican food!!! I'm from California and tend to be a snob when it comes to Mexican food, La Unica is by far the BEST I have found in Colorado in 7 years of searching! Every single thing we have tried there has been off the hook! The only thing that may rub you the wrong way is the the chips are store bought but the salsa 100% makes up for it! Family owned and operated, local, and fresh!

I don't really understand the more positive ratings. Some of the worst Mexican food we have had in town. No compelling reason for to ever come back.

This was my first time coming here. We went on a Friday evening at 6pm and got a seat immediately. The staff was great, the food was great, and I liked the environment. Small & quaint. My only criticism is that the margaritas are not as good as they say - I would say below average. Overall, I'd go back.

Ambiance: A little whole-in-the-wall kinda place, housed in an old Taco Bell building. Very much over-decorated. About ten tables, in a rather tight and small-sized dining room. Service: Excellent. Very friendly and quite attentive. Family run. Food: First off, the table salsa is chunky and rather hot (something of a rarity in Colorado Springs where the salsa is usually no spicier than ketchup.) I liked it! Chips are rounds, and were good, but nothing spectacular. I ordered a three-taco combo (shredded beef, a stew kind of beef and shredded pork.) Served in soft corn tortillas with rice and beans. The tacos were decent, and overall I liked them. The beans were of the right consistency, but the rice was bland and tasteless (Why is it I either like the beans or the rice, but never both at a Mexican restaurant?) Overall, I enjoyed this place, but the price was right up there with the better Mexican restaurants in town (a place like this usually has lower prices in order to compete with the nicer dining rooms in town.) I suppose I will come back, though there are a few better Mexican places within a mile or two of La Unica.

How did I never hear about this place? Probably because it looks like a hole in the wall place from the outside. The inside is warm and inviting, the service is great and the food is phenomenal. Really somebody the best Mexican food in Colorado Springs.

This small mom and pop restaurant is worth a visit. With their wedding photo hanging on the wall the wife serves the food while the husband cooks it. The service was prompt and the food was great!

Disappointing. Like was stated in another review, store-bought chips & clearly frozen/microwaved food. Either that or the whole plate goes into the oven. When my food arrived, Chile Relleno, the plate was scorching & the food equally so. After letting it cool for a solid 5-6 minutes, it still burned my tongue. To the staff's credit, they did warn me that it was hot, but it was beyond what I would consider to be a normal cooking temperature. The entrees were so-so & the black beans were water'y & like I said, the whole production seemed a little re-heated. There aren't a ton of food options in this area, so maybe it wasn't a total mistake, but I wouldn't make a point to return.

Food was not good. Flavorless and pricey! $13.00 for a green chile burrito which is basically a tortilla with green peppers(?) and make 5 small pieces of meat. No free refills on fountain drinks. Free refills on tea but they never refilled my cup. Service was extremely slow. I don't know about the validity if those 4 and 5 star reviews...

I really like the place, but call before you go. I have headed out there three times in a row, only to find that they were closed. When they are open the food and margaritas are great. The salsa is way too hot for my wife and almost too hot for me.

When a restaurant has 2 star reviews as well as 4 and 5 star reviews, I usually steer clear. After a long, fun day on the cog railway in Manitou Springs, we were hungry and wanted to continue our adventure in this funky little town. Wow! What a mistake. $70 for five people, no free refills on fountain drinks, no substitutions- would have been alright with all of that if the food had been good. It wasn't. In fact, several of our party could barely choke down half the plate. One ordered extra cilantro on her beef taco. Even that couldn't cover up the taste it left in your mouth-disgusting. You've been warned about this place.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
