So we've been here 30 minutes now and still no food. The older lady working our section said they "forgot" the balloon classic was this weekend so apparently they are short handed. Five tables in this area are empty and all are dirty. Seems like it should have occurred to someone what weekend it is. One to five stars for service?? Sorry sweetie, you're barely getting a one star. You are grumpy. We weren't until we got here. Lets hope the food is good ... still waiting for it ... 45 minutes and counting. We were about 5 mins from just leaving when the food arrived. It was cold and you could tell it had to have been sitting in the window for awhile. I swear, the place is half empty and over and over we can hear the waitress say, "I'll be back but it wont be soon. We forgot the balloon classic was this weekend." I'm over it. You guys have been in business for a long time. The Balloon Classic has been around a long time. Its ALWAYS Labor Day Weekend. Jesus, surely your food rep reminded you what the hell weekend it is. The food was so so. Cold. Small portions. Meh. Skip this place. Its outdated and not in a charming way.

This place was pretty good! The food was diner food. The atmosphere was beige. There was no wait on a Saturday. I was probably the youngest person there. I wasn't hungry anymore once I ate. So, 3 stars.

Standard. Gentle but not upbeat service. Sleepy. Nice to have chicken fried steak, though.

Detz is a breakfast joint circa 1970. Faded linoleum, wood panelling, hanging viney plants, lots and lots of brass...clearly decor is not the attraction to this greasy spoon. On the upside, within the next 10 years this decor is bound to come back into fashion and suddenly Detz will be retro cool. So they've got that working for them. We were seated quickly but it was a bit of a ruse, the cook line was clearly overwhelmed with the church crowd influx because it was over an hour wait for food on a Sunday morning. I was floating on coffee by the time our food arrived. By the time my Western Omelette was in front of me I was good'n'hungry and it satisfied the itch. However. The allure of a place like this is the home cooking feel without the dishes. But after the ginormous wait on food it had lost it's appeal - I could have made this AND cleaned up dishes with time to spare. AND not gotten out of my pajamas. If I'm going to have an hour wait then fine, I am going to assume it's because my food is going to be stellar. This wasn't. Next time we'll go elsewhere on a Sunday morning. My guess is that on any other day of the week this place is ok.

If you're looking for for a classic diner with a classic menu then look no further. I travel to the Springs all the time for work and this is where I have breakfast every day. And say hi to Verna while you're there. She's an absolute gem of a waitress.

This is your typical old diner feel with furnishings that are old, worn and outdated. That being said the service is normally pretty good unless they are really busy. I only get breakfast but it is always good and normally comes out pretty quick. I always go during the week for lunch so I don't know how they handle the weekend crowd.

First time here, it's an older atmosphere from the carpet to the chairs to the clientele but that is one of its perks! I had the eggs Benedict, I should have known better that maybe a place like this doesn't specialize in hollandaise sauce. The packaged mix you buy at the grocery store is better. My fiancé got the chicken fried steak and eggs with seasoned home fried potatoes and biscuits and gravy... Everything was uniquely delish, I pretty much ate his meal. The service was a little slow at first but friendly. Clearly a popular place as most of the tables were full of groups.

Traditional, tasty cafe breakfast food. Great Service! The restaurant looks pretty divey outside and in, but don't let that scare you off.

If you love family diners, Detz Cafe is your ticket to bliss in Colorado Springs. Grandma supervises, daughter and grand-daughter wait tables, and the vibe is as comfortable as getting your shower water the perfect temperature! Probably the most remarkable thing is how they've managed to keep the country diner atmosphere absolutely perfect despite being in the fringe of downtown, where things are being re-developed and modernized on a daily basis. Comfortable vinyl-skinned booths, 1960's style wood paneling, lots of square tables and stacking chairs, Lion's Club chewing gum machines . . . let's just ladle some country gravy on top of every thing! AND the atmosphere is so relaxed, it really is like stepping back in time. Detz has become our favorite breakfast hang-out on the weekends. They master the miracle of getting your hash browns perfectly crispy, their sausage gravy is perfect on a fresh-baked biscuit or a chicken-fried steak. They've got corned beef hash that's fresh out of the can, just like momma used to make, and not the fussy-fancy "freshly chunked" stuff that seems in vogue. Over-easy eggs are perfect every time, nice huevos rancheros with just the right kick, bacon that's crisp and tasty -- oh, and did I mention that they serve only ranch-fresh, naturally raised, hormone free meats and eggs? Detz easily passes the litmus test for diners, which for me is diner coffee. You'll easily find us here for breakfast at least once a week. Go ahead, order something comforting. They'll take care of you, just like family!

Great little local place, off the beaten path in Colorado Springs. We brought two little kids and they have an awesome children's menu. Very affordable prices and friendly service too.

Good food, good meat, good God, let's eat. This small, unassuming diner is perfect for a quick, tasty, affordable lunch downtown. Plenty of burgers, hot and cold sandwiches and the like available here, with tons of yummy sides. I had a Philly cheese-steak with onion rings and my friend had a BLT with potato salad. We cleaned our plates. Drinks aren't the cheapest ($3 for an Arnold Palmer, which was more than a soda) but that's OK. A good lunch that filled us both for about $20 in a nice quiet out-of-the-way place. I'll be back.

Awesome food. It was warm, flavorful, & I love the blueberry muffin. The staff we're friendly, and very, very quick. Food came out in no time, despite their fairly large turnout. The environment was quite peaceful and the company, quite mature. However very friendly, nonetheless! The decor was definitely dated. However, it did not detract from anything to be perfectly honest.

This is an adorable treasure of a breakfast spot. I wish I took more pictures of what I had eaten and what I was looking at. It truly reminds me of my favorite greasy spoon diner back home that closed down after 25 years of business and stepping into and looking at the fake flowers, sea foam green upholstery, and curtains just tugged at my happy heart strings. I came here for brunch on Sunday expecting a crowd, but luckily no one gets up earlier than 9 a.m. in Colorado Springs apparently. More space for me! I had a endless cup of coffee, corned beef hash, hash browns, and eggs over medium with sausage and biscuits. The corned beef was exceptional, salty but not overwhelming, hash browns were delightfully crispy with just enough oil and everything was hot hot hot. The only downside was the fact that the biscuits and gravy was tough, wilted on the underside and cold on top. It basically felt like it was microwaved. I loved the service and the constant coffee refills. I can't appreciate quick service and a never ending cup of coffee more. My server was so sweet and adorable and just lovely overall. I'll definitely be back.

Went to breakfast with my husband on a Sunday morning. The placed was filled with a much older crowd than were used to seeing on a Sunday. Maybe an AARP special that day? Very cute place, I'm pretty sure family owned also. Food was old fashioned, however, the prices were not. Between my husband and I we spent $30 including our tip. This was for corned beef hash, oj, a breakfast burrito, and coffee. Oj was very expensive and VERY small. Food was decent, would have been much better if it was hot. I've been a breakfast/brunch cook and a huge priority is piping hot plates and food. Neither of which my husband or I received. I really love supporting local businesses but I often expect them to give a reason to support. There are too many local places in the Springs that need business and go above and beyond expectations. I'm sorry this didn't even meet the expectations that were set based on yelp reviews. Womp womp...

A great place to meet your mother in law and catch up. :) It's a bit of a hole in the wall kinda joint. It is of course dated... it's an oldie but goodie here in Downtown Colorado Springs. The people are down to earth and friendly and someone always runs in to someone they know here. A previous review said it was dirty but honestly they must've visited on an off day. I've never known it to be dirty. Just an old establishment. If you want resort style service and food, go visit the Broadmoor. This is a no frills, down home place at extremely reasonable prices. They have ginormous breakfast burritos smothered in killer green chili sauce. Waffles are good too! :D

I have worked in Downtown Springs for 9 years and I have only recently tried this joint. I work literally 200 yards from here, disappointed that I only now visited. Detz is a true hole in the wall diner. Its short on visuals, long on local charm. Made me feel like I was in a diner from when I was a kid in the south. I had a tuna melt and friend had a wrap. In and out for less than 25 bucks. Not too shabby for downtown. My tea glass was never empty. Don't make the same mistake that I did and wait too long to visit. You wont be disappointed.

Came in for breakfast and was very pleased. Not rushed at all and the atmosphere was very comfortable and laid back. Not loud and the food was exactly what we were looking for.. A nice home cooked meal. Anytime I can get grits I am happy. The food was very inexpensive also. The portions were large also. We had tried to go to King chef diner but the church crowd had infiltrated and it was crowded and loud. So happy my husband had remembered Detz Cafe and we ended up here. He's the decor is dated, but that's part of the charm and I'm there for the food. Upon leaving I saw they received an award for "best place to go if you want to forgot the last 6 decades ever happened". It's a great place with great food. Nothing commercial about this place.. 100% real and down to earth.

What a cute little diner. Service was prompt and friendly. I had the NY strip steak for lunch and it was delicious. The salad was fresh, the beans were not mushy, and the mashed potatoes was yummy.

I went here on my last vacation to Colorado Springs and was pleasently surprised with this place. It was small and cozy. The people were polite. Our waitress shared with us some pictures of her lovely Pitbull and talked to us while we were there making us feel right at home. The food was great to top it all off. Good prices and close to Garden of the Gods so you can grab quick breakfast or brunch and then go sight seeing.

Though it was good quality and the price was fair. Service was good but may not be the place to go if you are in a hurry.

After reading the reviews here, I thought I'd have to stop by. The best thing I can say is that the food was hot. Maybe I should have gotten breakfast instead of lunch? The food was astonishingly tasteless. I couldn't finish it. The prices were not all that good for the quality of the food. I will list some positives, though. The staff seemed friendly, if not all that conscientious. It is very quiet. I saw lots of senior citizens, and it definitely seemed like their kind of place. They do serve real butter, not margarine. The decor is indeed dated, but I thought that was nice; everything appeared clean and in good repair.

I love Detz Cafe, and not just because my family runs it!! The people are usually pretty nice that come in, very friendly. My favorite food is hands down the Rueben and the Carrot Cake!!! Love the cream cheese frosting. My husband and daughter love love the green chili just about anyway. Oh, and don't eat hamburgers much....but when I do, only at Detz.

Prices are good but food is unremarkable. The biscuit was nothing special and the gravy was thin and under seasoned. Hash browns were nice; crisp outside without excessive grease. It's not bad, it just doesn't stand out.

This downtown gem has flown under our radar for a long time, and thank god we finally found it. Detz Cafe is kind of invisible for some reason, but it's worth hunting down. Perfect American comfort foods: burgers, meatloaf, hot turkey sandwiches, pie. And excellent coffee. They're also open on Sundays, which is a treat. And they accept debit and credit cards. Also a treat. More, including pics, at oinkety.com/?p=3491
