Brought my family for the chicken dinner. ALL was served hot and all tasted very good. A bit pricy but it was a fun evening had by all. Full bar but we all had water. Service was very good and timely. We came early on a Friday but I would suggest RSVP to make sure they can handle - especially for larger parties.

This place is THE bomb! Came in with family on a Saturday about 420pm. I got diet Pepsi, cobb salad, and cup of cream of artichoke soup. All was good. The other people I was with liked their food too. They said the bread was fresh and divine. We ordered banana cream pie and strawberry shortcake for dessert. The banana cream pie is to die for so they said, I didn't try it yet. My second visit got cowboy burger and it was delish.

Hands down, the best fried chicken I have ever had. The salads are so flavorable because their dressings are so delicious, I always eat every piece on the plate. The warm bread is so good. I have never had dessert because I am always so full from the bread, salad and chicken with mashed potatos. It's the best fried chicken in the world. I'm sure they serve this in heaven.

Outstanding!!!! This was our first time to Castle Cafe. A very nice couple sitting in the waiting area with us recommended the fried chicken dinner with green chili soup & coleslaw. We took their advice & was so glad we did! We liked the green chile soup so much, we ordered one to go. Can't wait to go back & try more food. Btw, our server JOE WAS AWESOME!!!!!

Amazing place!! I ordered the Castlewood Salad and my husband had the fish and chips. I have to say it was hands down the best salad I have ever had. I ordered it initially because of some stomach issues I had been having with eating heavy food. But I'm actually kinda glad for once that my stomach has been so fussy!! The salad comes with chicken, which was hot and tender and diced!! No having to screw with a knife to eat my salad. The lettuce was crisp, lightly coated and also chopped so no awkward giant leaf bites that you have to choke down. The feta cheese was smooth, creamy and so mildly salty, it added the perfect amount of rich cheesiesness. I just can't rave enough about the individual pieces of the salad, but for the sake of brevity, let me say, every bite was a tantalizing surprise of flavor and texture for the senses. Love went into that salad. And the cherry garnish on this souffle of awesome was the service. Joe is a great waiter, amiable, attentive, and with a fantastic sense of timing. He was always there when you needed him, like some sort of telepathic super waiter! We can't wait to come back and sample the whole menu.

If you're looking for a "Home Cooked Meal" look no farther than Castle Cafe. The Fried Chicken is truly amazing...just like Grandma use to make. Home made rolls and mashed potatoes and gravy are to die for. Service and atmosphere are very good but that Fried Chicken.....OMG, it's the best I've tasted away from home. The jalapeno cheese soup is really really good too.

Service was very attentive and the best part of this restaurant. The chicken is horribly greasy like as if the oil was too cold and the breading needs some flavoring. This was nothing like grandma's chicken. Gravy was pretty tasteless and vegetables were SO salty. The Chipotle corn soup was tasty and the bread with the soup were the best part of this meal. Can safely say we will never be back again.

Fried chicken is to die for and yes it does take 30 minutes to make. Worth the wait, I always order a salad or appetizer and spend the time visiting with my family. Very relaxed atmosphere, very casual and wonderful. I recommend everyone try this place out when in Castle Rock!

My neighbor & I went there for dinner since we heard about the fried chicken that is only served at dinner. We were very disappointed. The chicken tasted like a lot of corn starch and was very unseasoned. The black bean soup was good, as well as the mashed potatoes w/gravy. The best part of our meal was Terry our waitress, she was awesome & very patient with us.

You bet I'm a fan. The food is very good to excellent as is the service. They will do whatever it takes to please the customer. REALLY GREAT burgers, pulled port, and of all things meatloaf. Deserts are wonderful as well - not so good on the weight though. Can't resist the pies. Been here 15 years and this year the green chili is to die for - don't know why it is so so good right now but it is. Can't wait to go back and get some more.

Understand that you'll wait 45 minutes for fried chicken. I didn't know this until we got our menus but that's what we came for. So, we enjoyed some apps and good company and when all was said and done, we weren't disappointed!

I live in Castle Rock so the Castle Cafe is a regular haunt for us. I highly recommend going there for lunch - especially if you are hungry. They have great salads and the burgers look good too. Last visit I had the fish and chips - very light, fluffy fish with a batter so light and crisp! Hubby Steve had the reuben - he said it was the he's had in a long time. Of course their fried chicken is famous - and good!

Finally a place I can get excited about in Castle Rock. This place has great "home cooked" meals. Try the fried chicken, or anything else really. So far I cannot complain at all about this place. Get there early if going for dinner, as there is usually a line, but well worth the wait. Also, note that freshly fried chicken takes time, so you will wait longer than normal for your food, but that is part of the game. This place is all that its cracked up to be. Good down home cooking at a reasonable price.

BEST, I repeat, BEST chicken soup EVER! I wish I lived in Colorado for many reasons and this soup is for sure one of them. I ordered a bowl along with the lunch special, fish & chips, and wish I had just ordered like 3 bowls of chicken soup instead. The fish & chips were pretty good, but I just can't say enough about the amazing soup. Instead of noodles, they make the soup with a dough that reminds me of chicken & dumplings. Plenty of chicken, carrots, celery, etc but dang, the creamier ( it's not creamy, but it's creamier than a traditional chicken noodle soup broth) broth and the dumplings make this soup the best thing ever ! The only reason I deducted a star was because our waitress wasn't the nicest... bummer :( I should add that the hostess was very, very sweet.

Absolutely worst experience I have had! We had a few friends in town for the holidays and decided to take our party to this place. The waitress messed up our order, we would have had to wait 30 minutes for two more chicken dinners in order to eat together. Castle Rock is becoming our 'go to' location, second only to downtown Denver. It's close, has really good places, nice hiking around the city, and if like to cycle, this is a great starting point. Our group read reviews of Castle Café on Yelp, and based on the good reviews, we stopped in. One of the things to realize here is their hours. They are open for lunch and dinner, but only during those times (they close between the meals, so you can't just pop in any old time). Once you get over this, it's a great place. This place has been around for a long time, and those places tend to stay for a reason, and the food here is great! We had the Pulled Pork Sandwich, Burger, and Smoked Trout, and they were all very good! I know, we should have had the world famous Fried Chicken, but we just were not in the mood. Besides, that gives us a reason to go back!

Believe the hype with the fried chicken. It is damn good! Green chili was also good. Service was solid. Kinda wish they had a stronger beer selection. All they have is major commercial beers. Some craft selections would be nice. Can't wait to try the buffalo meatloaf next.

The Castle Cafe rocks!!!! Great food and a great staff. They only serve Chicken and Waffles on Sunday. Wish they would put them on the menu all the time. They are the best. If you are looking for traditional Chicken and Waffles, this is the place. They serve it just as it should be, fried chicken on the bone, gravy (ask for it on the side), on a waffle. Syrup and a raspberry compound butter on the side. This is an excellent dish. When I have been there on days other then Sunday, I have enjoyed several other dishes on the menu. All of them have been pretty darn good.

We are regulars at Castle Cafe. This place is modeled after Stroud's in Kansas City, which IS the best fried chicken on the planet. Down to the gravy made from the drippings, Castle Cafe's fried chicken is doing Stroud's justice. Advice to anyone - order the fried chicken. I have attempted to go away from it twice. The first time was for the catfish and the second for chicken fried chicken. Both were lackluster at best. Going to stick to the fried chicken from now on. The mashed potatoes and gravy are excellent here. Not impressed by the mixed veggies. Am convinced they are from a Costco bag. But, Castle Cafe markets and prides itself on fried chicken, and from that stanpoint, they deliver. Wish they would serve Stroud's cinnamon rolls along with their bread...

Castle Cafe has been a regular joint for my parents for years. I was a third wheel with them a few weeks back and was pleasantly surprised. The service was what I expected in a small town, very friendly and prompt. I ordered the catfish and felt like I was eating at a place a couple hundred miles from NO. In other words almost as good as the catfish I had in New Orleans. Fries and slaw were also great. I would definitely recommend this place for not only the food, but the small town feel and service.

I did not try the Fried Chicken. Let me repeat that statement. I did not try the Fried Chicken. I know, I know. I was supposed to but... ...we had been hiking up the Rock... ...Yes! The Rock in Castle Rock and... I just wanted a beer and a burger. My friends wanted to try this place, but it was about 3:00 and... They didn't open until 4:30 on this Saturday so we had a quick pint at another place. We returned a little after 4:30 and were seated quickly. Note (the place seemed to fill up fast so get there early or wait until later.) I ordered my beer and burger. We received a serving of rolls. Kind of looked store bought, but were served with butter patties. My beer was cold and served in a cool chalice. (Probably the best part of dinner) My burger, though, was average. The mashed potatoes were average. I so wanted more. A couple of my friends ordered the trout appetizer. It was average with cheap crackers. I will return one day and try the famous fried chicken. If it rocks, I'll update this review.

Ahh man this place looks great.... The hostess is warn with a calmness about her. I promptly got seated in a nice and roomy booth. No soda tonight?!? Bummer.... Okay I won't hold it against this reputable establishment. The bread is awesome. It looks like a mini loaf, plus it's warm. The chic fried chic is a patty of chicken smothered in gravy. I sent it right back. I want the real deal. Show me what you're made of Castle Cafe! The salad was cold and tasty on the cooled salad plate. They don't mess around here gauging from the nice hot bread which was served twice before the main chic dinner.

We had great service and the food was pretty good. Kids menus reasonably priced. My lunch burger was slightly overpriced but tasted very good. The atmosphere is pleasant but slight noisy. I would recommend coming here for lunch. We will have to try it for breakfast sometime.

Better than I could make at home, but I don't have a fryer there. It needed more flavor. More spice? I don't know, but more...something. The gravy and the potatoes, however were fabulous (+star)! Both reminded me of what my mom would make...not super whipped, but with a homemade texture. The veggies on the side are what you would get in the freezer section of the grocery store titled "Mixed Vegetables" then throw in the microwave...very disappointing. (-star). How about some sauteed fresh veggies? Service: I wish I could recall the servers name...early 20s guy was very attentive, friendly, and helpful (+star). It isn't his fault that the chicken was just OK and the veggies were an embarrassment. Ambiance: everything seemed clean. The environment reminds me of a less lit Cracker Barrel, but more unique (+star). Price: $16.95 for the chicken dinner? Knock about three dollars off and I would think it is reasonable considering. We go here a couple times a month after church. It's packed on Sunday afternoons, but the place is big. We have never had to wait for a table. Our regular server is amazing, but there are a few others that leave a little to be desired. I am just going to say it...I don't like fried chicken. I have not ordered it there or tried it, but my husband gives it two thumbs up. But, the walleye is soooo good - and I don't even really like fish. I ordered a side of mashed potatoes and gravy once because of the raves from my husband - and it was rave worthy! I really haven't had much else on the menu because I can't get anything like their walleye anywhere else. Throw in their blackberry butter with their fresh rolls, and you will never be satisfied with food anywhere else.

Great follow up to a mountain bike ride on Ridgeline Open Space! Yeah! We both ordered the in-house smoked pulled pork sandwich, which was absolutely delicious. The salad and/or coleslaw accompanying the sandwich were fresh and delicious. Local's rock!

Went here for lunch because I work down the street. I loved the old historic building and liked reading a bit about it's history on the menu. Lunch was a little pricier than some other places, but not much so I just had a caesar salad and cup of cream of mushroom soup. The waitress was friendly and quick and I had my very well mixed salad and cup of soup in no time. Can't wait to try more of the menu when I have a few extra dollars to spend.

Love their blat (bacon, lettuce, avocado, & tomato on toasted sourdough), their delicious grilled salmon, and their great, spicy hot! green chilli. Good down home food. Not many GF options but they at least have the menu. They are known for the fried chicken. I had the hanger steak. For $19 bucks you just can't beat it. I really enjoyed it with $5 dollar class of Cabernet. Life's good. I would like to see the service a little better. Don't get me wrong they have great attitude servers. Not bad for a little cafe in Castlerock. Went here after ice skating on a Sunday. The bread was really good and so was the pulled pork. The chicken fried chicken was a little dry and the portions was a little small for the price.

Fried chicken, like BBQ and other regional specialties, always seems to divide people. Some folks will rave about a place's food, while others will say it's not worth gracing their fork. Stop the craziness people. Can we all just enjoy some good grub here? Case in point: the fried chicken at Castle Cafe. Reading through the reviews you aren't sure whether it's finger licking good, or totally overrated and gross. I'm pretty sure how you feel about it is ingrained somewhere deep inside your DNA, so if you haven't tried it you'll just have to learn for yourself. Okay - I'm off my soap box now. Personally, I love the fried chicken at Castle Cafe! It's pan fried, juicy and has just the right amount of crispy coating for me. I like it best dipped in the cracklin' gravy, which I think is UH-MAY-ZING. You could dip anything in that gravy and I'd give it my seal of approval! The mashed potatoes are always good, and the veggies, well they're nothing at all exciting but you're not really ordering the meal for the veggies, are you? Pour some gravy on them, they're fine. The fried chicken is made fresh to order, so be patient. It's served family style, so do what I do and order it with some friends and then steal all the drumsticks for yourself! I'm pretty sure family style means you better be fast or you miss out on the good stuff. I have had other food at Castle Cafe, and it's always been quite good. I'm a big fan of their fish dishes, such as the salmon, trout and walleye, which are all delicious. The buffalo meatloaf and ribs also look good, but I've only had a bite or two of these when I sneak them off the plate of unsuspecting dining partners. I'm sure the burgers are good too, but if you want a burger, go to the bar Next Door, which is connected to the Castle Cafe and serves up even more burgers in a much more casual atmosphere. Go, give them a try. Apparently you'll love them or hate them. If you love them, great... I'll see you there. If you don't love them, that's fine too. All the more fried chicken for me!

So I was in Castle Rock for training and certification the other day (all day mind you). As I don't get to the Rock all that often, I often forget how small it really is. Anyhoo, I was between sessions, hungry and had a little over an hour to kill. I jumped on my trusty Yelp! app and found this little spot that was down the street from Town Hall. I made may way over to this establishment and I was happy I did. From the outside, it looks kind of small, but once you walk in that is not the case. They have a decent sized bar, a dining room off to the left of the bar and then the main dining room. The main dining room has large comfy booths that line the wall and tables in the center. It had an old rustic feeling to it, animal heads on the wall, and my favorite part, the chandeliers were made out of cheese graters which I thought was really original. I was greated by a smiley hostess and seated right away. The waitress came over after about 5 minutes or so and took my order. I was ended up getting the B.L.A.T. on grilled sourdough (yum!) as I didn't want to be in a food coma for the afternoon. I glanced at the drink list that was on the table, and it had your standard restaurant beer (Coors, Miller, Corona etc) and a few selections of wine. I didn't notice on the menu if they had an actual drink list anywhere. Although from what I could tell, they seemed to have a fully stocked bar. No complaints on service I was in and out of there in about 35 minutes. I would probably come back here if I found myself in the area and in need of some food. I have seen all the raves about the pan fried chicken, so I think I need to check that out! Happy lunching!

Adrienne (same sorry if I misspelled) was the greatest hostess we have ever had. Keita ( sorry if I misspelled )the bartender was extremely helpful. The chicken was the best better than Gus's from Memphis. The gravy is a great touch to the chicken. If you don't have a good time and great food at the Castle Cafe you must not be alive. It was the best experience I've had at a restaurant and I travel for a living. Adrienne and Keita thanks for making our experience even better because the good was great without it.

We always enjoy the food here. However, service is touch and go. On this particular night, we waited 45 minutes for our meal. The waitress had forgotten to put our ticket into the kitchen. We did not enjoy our meal when it finally arrived because the staff was busy cleaning up for the night. Not sure we will ever return. Very disappointed.

The salad was good and that is the only good thing I can say about the dinner. I have no idea what everyone else is raving about. I had the pan fried chicken. It came with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy and mixed vegetables. Actually the mashed potatoes and gravy were good, but the mixed vegetables tasted like they came out of a can. I tend to stay away from fried foods because oil in the deep fryer is unhealthy . But I thought since the chicken was pan-fried it might be better at least maybe I could assume they're using fresh oil each time they fry it. And this may in fact be the case for this chicken. However, the flavor of the chicken was extremely plain the breast was dry and I had to choke it down. If I had paid $12 for this dinner I probably would have felt okay about it but there's no way it was worth $17. Otherwise it's a nice place, good atmosphere, it was very busy, the staff was friendly and professional. I can't complain about the overall atmosphere.

The place is such a dive, but seems to have historic significance. The 4 stars is for the burgers. Can't get enough. There are so many chains that can't touch burgers from places like this. A friend raved about their smoked trout appetizer, but it was just so sad when it was brought out! Anorexic-looking grey fillet, cheap crackers, tasteless cucumbers. The entrees were fine, fish, pork, chicken salad. Nothing to complain about. So solid three stars, too bad the trout was such a disappointment.

Castle Cafe is located right on the town square in Castle Rock in a beautifully restored historic building that served as a hotel and cafe dating back the the 1890's. I love the atmosphere and historic architecture of the wonderful old building. Enough about that, most people come here to enjoy great food and their famous pan fried chicken made to order using their well perfected Kansas City recipe. Each order of chicken is hand dredged and than lovingly fried in a cast iron skillet just the way Mama used to do it on Sunday afternoon following church. The meals are served with fantastic homemade Parker House Rolls and choice of soup, salad or Nana's Cole Slaw. You have got to choose the Cole Slaw! It is so creamy and rich that you will be wishing you could get more! The Fried Chicken takes about 20 minutes to cook and comes straight from the frying pan to the table served family style on a big platter. It was crispy, delicious, and not at all greasy. It also came with unlimited family style vegetables, fresh mashed potatoes, and cracklin gravy. This ain't KFC so be prepared to drop $17 for half a bird. Believe me once you taste everything you will understand why this is really a fair price to pay. Don't think they serve fried chicken at lunch time during the week so you might call ahead and check if that's what your craving.

I gave three stars for the fried chicken alone, I always pick up and take it home, so I really can't speak to the atmosphere or staff first hand. One thing I have noticed is that the manager lady can be pretty callous to everyone when it is busy. Food is expensive but every once in a while I get the chicken. Haven't tried anything else on the menu.

This is a quaint little place right in the heart of old town Castle Rock. It's home cooked goodness, like pan fried chicken and mashed potatoes. They also have really crispy and great sweet potato fries. The service is great and offers a cool small town feel without being too old timey. A great place for a family dinner or a cold brew with friends.

Castle Cafe has been one my favorite restaurants ever since I was in high school. My family used to go their specifically for their steak burgers and out of this world rolls. I went back for dinner there recently for the first time in over a year, and was sad to see a lot had changed. The new menu did not include the legendary burger, and the Rock Burger I got instead, was average at best. We also didn't receive any rolls, which makes me fear they are gone. I still think the service and atmosphere is excellent, but the food needs a run down memory lane.

*Fried Chicken Dinner Review Only* There are few restaurants that still do Pan Fried Chicken. Most places are lazy and do the tasteless "Chicken Fried Chicken" thing. Eww. I've been to Castle Cafe a few times and have only ever ordered the chicken. Their chicken is nothing special. Not bad per se, not terribly good. Although the skin is crispy and not overly greasy it lacks in flavor. I don't really understand this. If you're going to go to all the trouble of pan frying chicken on the bone, why wouldn't you brine or season the effing meat?? My mother thinks they under season it on "purpose" but I don't really understand why they'd do that. It is also a tad on the dry side each time I've eaten here. The chicken is also expensive at $16/plate. It is a lot of food though (1/2 chicken). The dinner comes with a nice sized dinner salad, mashed potatoes, a vegetable medley and rolls. The rolls and mashed potatoes are very good and so is the cracklin' gravy. The vegetable medley could use some help, it's pretty bland and seasoned only with a bit of butter. And if you're not a glutton and cannot consume 1/2 of a chicken and want to split an order, they charge $8 extra. For a place that is supposed to be "known" for their fried chicken, this is a disappointment. FIGURE IT OUT, Y'ALL!

Fried chicken? Yeah that's about the only thing I was interested in on the menu and I'm not a huge fan to begin with. Meh. The cost is a little ridiculous. Waiting for 15 minutes to be seated when there are several larger booths open because we are only a party of two? Even more ridiculous. (Especially when you are the only two people stupidly waiting.) Pleasant service. Bitter salad, with loads of ranch dressing. Do you wash your lettuce? More dressing than leafs. What's the appeal here people? Is it these "Parker House Rolls"? I never was a biscuit kinda girl. Come to think it of it, I decided I'm not a big fan of comfort American food in general. The salty mashed potatoes and gravy at KFC are better. I think the only other place I've paid this much for fried chicken is White Fence Farm and theirs was better. Granted, you do get a lot of chicken.. but still I wasn't impressed. All and all, underwhelmed. Too small a menu to bother coming back, and waiting 30 minutes for "made to order bird" just isn't my cup of tea. Paid a lot, enjoyed too little.

We went online looking for a place to eat lunch after going to The Barn. We were going to try another cafe but they were closed. We looked across the street and noticed alot of people at the Caste Cafe. This was a good sign to us so this is where we ended up. We got seated right away. I ordered the Jalapeno cheese soup which was really good. The rolls that every table gets were awesome. They reminded me of what the cowboys probably made when at the campfire. Don't miss the rolls because they are a must. We will be back.

Ugh I cannot wait to move to Colorado in January and have this place practically in my backyard! I remember coming here as a young child when we would visit my grandma, and so of course while I was there on vacation in January 2012 we went, twice. The food is just as amazing as I remember. This was our third visit to Castle Cafe in the past several years. We came with a group of 5 on a Thursday night July 17th 2014 - We were to be seated at a booth but requested a table and the staff quickly accommodated us. Our orders included the house specialty PAN-FRIED CHICKEN - the Canadian Walleye - and Chicken fried steak. As for the food... the marquee $18 pan-fried chicken referred to has a half chicken came out piping hot... the taste was good but a little over cooked and dry... as stated on the menu "Chicken is Cooked to Order - Please Allow 30 Minutes" two of us that ordered thiswere disappointed. The "veggies" were over-cooked and shriveled. The parker house rolls were hot and perfect! The mashed potatoes are real potatoes but both the potatoes and gravy were merely warm. The cole-slaw was very tasty but slightly limp in texture. The Canadian Walleye didn't look appetizing but was good. The Chicken fried steak was also good. The house salads were good at best. In general, we thought the service was very good to excellent, the entrees were average. The sides were below average (except for the Parker house rolls which were perfect). Coke products and a generous bar menu for beverages were spot on for almost anybody. In the end we found that the Castle Café was not up to par given the $20 per person bill plus beverages. Ok food and not such an ok price but very good to excellent service.

My wife's sister & husband seriously bragged on this place, saying that they make the best fried chicken ever. We went in on a Tuesday night with 4 adults and 2 young kids. I split an fried chicken order with my bro-in-law. One whole chicken (8 pieces) comes with mashed potatoes, cole slaw and mixed veggies. It was pretty doggone good. I've had better, but only in places that specialize in fried chicken. This place does several things well, like a skirt steak that my wife absolutely loved, and pork ribs that were excellent as well, according to reports from my sis-in-law. Perhaps it's because we were there on a quiet weekday evening, but the server was quick and and showed courtesy and friendliness to strangers. On this road trip across the western U.S., we learned not to take courtesy to strangers for granted. Good experience all around. Kudos!!!

Pretty typical pub/comfort food. At lunch they emphasize burgers, sandwiches, and a few entrée items. At Dinner I've had the Fried Chicken, which is quite good. But otherwise the food is middling. On my most recent visit I had a Mahi Mahi sandwich. Ok, three small slivers of Mahi on a very large buttered toasted roll. There are multiple side dish choices, though effectively your choices are grease, grease, grease, and oil carriers. The only "healthy" side is cottage cheese (and no doubt the fattiest variety of that). Veggies? Aren't the tomato and onion slices for the sandwich enough veggie for you? Ok, I give, I'll take the soggy French Fries. Yeah, if I keep going like this I'll talk myself into reducing the rating to two stars. As long as you realize that you aren't going to find much (if anything) healthy on the menu then Castle Café is an ok place. Service is friendly and efficient enough too. But I'm still searching for that one place in downtown Castle Rock that makes me want to be a regular at lunch. This isn't it.

We met two of our friends there. The hostess was a complete witch. We walked in in a Sunday evening(it was not busy) and she had a complete attitude when I told her it was 4 adults,1child,and 1 baby) She informed us that it would be a 30 minute wait because our party was so large and that we had a baby with us and walked away Once we were seated- they didn't have anyplace for the baby carseat- the hostess told me I would have to put her on the floor or just sit it on a chair unsecured. The server was decent My husband and I shared a fried chicken plate. The food was decent but the employees left a bad taste in my mouth I will not be returning!

We eat here whenever we get to Castle Rock. This last visit was a bit disappointing. I usually order the chicken fried steak, but this time I ordered the chicken fried chicken. Usually, when I order this dish it is chicken pieces breaded. This was a flat thin slab of chicken that looked like it was breaded in a thin tempura sauce. Because I usually order the chicken fried steak I asked if it was the same breading used on the chicken fried steak. The server said she asked the cook and the breading has not changed. Excuse me, we have been coming here for years. How do you make cracklin gravy if you do not have cracklin? Redemption was the apple pie ala mode. Delicious.

Great atmosphere, blah fried chicken. With that said, I would go back but would order something different. My wife had the brisket sandwich and loved it! Brother-in-law had the blackened salmon and said it was great. Rolls are wonderful as is the gravy. But when it came to the "famous" fried chicken my sister and I were highly disappointed. Two words: Yuppie-I-O Dip. Does that count as two words? Whatever, I'm telling you from experience, (grew up here, ate here a lot) it is one of the best things on the menu. This western stylized place is known for their fried chicken but come on people, Yuppie-I-O Dip - how could you resist such an awesome named platter? It's the best artichoke dip I've had in my young life. I moved away after high school and came back four years later - it still tasted the same and after I scarfed it down I ordered another. So, that being said I'd say come here mid-afternoon or even lunch. Order some dip, and a Shirley Temple, and you will leave happy. They should just rename it to Yummie-I-O Dip...okay, that was lame, but the dip is not. Try it now!

I dig this place, and never leave hungry. It's a good place to have dinner with the family and the recipes remind you of pure Americana. Fried chicken, meatloaf, and best of all, pot roast. There's nothing fancy, just good home-style cooking. It often feels weird to go to a place and order a meal that your grandmother made and you remember so fondly, but Castle Cafe often gets it right. When ordering, stick to the basics. If you go in expecting a fancy dish, you'll be disappointed. Couple dinner here with drinks or ice cream at one of the downtown shops and you can't go wrong. I believe it is a little pricey for basic down home cooking, but I keep going back.

Nothing to write home about, but good place to experience once. The food is absolutely straight up comfort food - chicken fried steak, mashed taters, fish 'n' chips, mac 'n' cheese and other items with 'n' in the title. I tried the BBQ Pork sandwich and was fairly disappointed. The meat was very very dry and the sauce had little flavor to it. The fries were good though. Our waitress was friendly enough, but rarely checked on us - which is particularly frustrating when you actually do need something. And she didn't exactly have a hustle in her step. Things seemed to take forever. The building is beautiful and has a neat history to it. Will more than likely opt to try other restaurants in the area next time I'm in the old Castle Rock neighborhood.

I like the historical aspect of the Castle Cafe (supposedly used to be a rough-and-tumble bar back in the late 1800's for quarry workers, with numerous fights on payday), and you can get that sense when you're there. The food is plain-old comfort food. Chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, you name it. Is it a modern place with a modern menu? Not at all. But I don't think it's trying to be, either. I've only been there for lunch, and had the beef & cheddar sandwich, which was really good (although that's hard to mess up). My son's mac & cheese was pretty good, too.. it was more than a box of Kraft. Service is usually a tie-breaker for me. Our waitress was attentive, friendly, chatty with my son, and prompt. Could the food be better? Yep. Could the place be updated? Yep. But if you're from the Midwest and want some good chicken fried -insert meat here-, I think you'll be happy with the Castle Cafe. BTW, if you go in the evening, be sure to check out the "Next Door Bar". It's a bar with a similar atmosphere (heck, they have the same owners) - straightforward, lots of wood, bar.

Yes, fried chicken and ribs are an individual thing. We ate here last night and I have to say the fried chicken dinner was amazing. Chicken was full of flavor, hot, juicy not underdone with a light crisp coating. Rolls were yeasty and delicious and the mashed potatoes were lightly mashed with their skins on with a nice gravy. You know how many times meals like this are quite salty? Not here. Finally the whole meal came out hot on the plate. Think I like this place? A real gem..........

I asked to sub something simple and the kitchen flatly refused even though I would have paid extra for the substitute. In theory, I could have purchased the brisket sandwich and taken the meat off and put it on my salad for $10, so why the problem? When the food came, it was very bland and not exciting at all. first i would like to say that i did not try the fried chicken, this is there house special that everyone recommends. Service was good, atmosphere was nice, food was good. We can not wait to go back and try the fried chicken.

I'm not really that impressed with this place. I've been here a couple times now and everything is just "meh" with me. We went here tonight since we had some family in town and I had the Pot Roast. Now this wasn't my mom's pot roast by anymeans but dayuuumm it was good! The side dishes were mashed potatoes and some corn/pea/zuchinni mix... it was decent, but I could tell it was a fancy dancy bag of frozen mixed veggies they nuked and tossed on the plate. If there were 2 complaints that I had it was the lack of service with my drink. I mean, I shouldn't be waiting for you to refil my drink. Now I don't like the overly attentative waitress where you take one sip and they refil the drink, but it was 3 times when my glass was empty and I sat there waiting for a new drink. Granted there were 9 of us... but still. My other complaint is I had my daughter with me and anyone who knows how a 7 month old is will understand the need to "entertain" them at the table. So I pulled out some cherrios along with several toys. My daughter was dropping the cheerios on the floor more than making them in her mouth and I kid you not the waitress made a rude comment about it! First off, I'm sure the resturant has a broom so cleaning up the 4 cheerios that ended up on the floor isn't going to break their backs, and 2nd off how rude! Maybe she was trying to be funny but her attempt to be sarcastic went horribly wrong. You never make a comment to a mother who is attempting to entertain her child to avoid her screaming at the top of her lungs during dinner!

It has all the ingredients to be a place that I love: cool old building in historic downtown, lots of local flavor, locals seem to love it here....yet it always falls a little flat for me. Each time I've gone to the Castle Cafe, I've found the food to be mediocre. They are supposedly famous for their fried chicken, but their chicken fried steak is bland and flavorless! Salads and apps are completely run of the mill as well. I wish it was better, I really really do. But, it's not, and I say save your money for another local restaurant (try the Old Stone Church or Union!)

I've always enjoyed visiting Castle Cafe when in Castle Rock. Unfortunately, my lunch on 3/6/13 was a bit off. I ordered the pork tenderloin SPECIAL. The pork was served only partially cooked with red in the center. I asked the waitress to take it back and she seriously sniveled. They make it very clear as soon as you go into the restaurant that "no sniveling is allowed". Maybe she didn't get the memo. Anyway the meal was blah, the waitress was not happy if we asked her for anything extra. I may return but definitely will not order the undercooked pork.

I enjoyed a Sunday night fried chicken dinner here with three great friends last weekend. First off, I had some artichoke and bacon soup. It was very tasty, and I like that they did not overly salt the soup, as is so often the case in restaurants. My palate is delicate and does not need to be... hold for it... wait for it... ahhh-salt-ed. Sorry about that, I could not resist. I then enjoyed the fried chicken which was cooked perfectly and most importantly, was not greasy at all. Three of us ate the fried chicken and the plate was overflowing with golden goodness when they brought it out to us. I thought I had hit the fried chicken lottery. Large thighs and breasts, meaty wings and drumsticks (and yes, I am talking about the chicken still). Served with mashed potatoes that were the right texture of not-too-creamy-not-too-chunky and skin on, just the way I like them. Again, not very salty. Other restaurants should take note, I can always add salt if I want to, I just can't ever seem to remove the extra salt you put on. Delicious dinner rolls and boring frozen vegetable medley (corn, pea and zuchini mix). This is very good food and a wonderful atmosphere. I will definitely be back when in the Castle Rock 'hood.

This place has a really welcoming vibe right from the start! It's one of the first places the man and I have been to in our new town that we felt GENUINELY welcomed at. We sat at a high table right in the bar so he could keep his eye on the Stanley Cup Final game. (it's taken me awhile to post this review!) I chose the "famous" fried chicken just to see what all the fuss was about. My husband chose the catfish dinner. The chicken was OK. Nothing really remarkable about it, a little underseasoned and not as crispy as I would've liked it to be. My husband really enjoyed his catfish and the spicy chili mayo that came with it. For dessert we got the white chocolate black bottom banana cream pie. It was so DELICIOUS! They make all their desserts from scratch everyday. I don't know that if I have words to give it justice just GO and get it yourself so you can see!

I grew up on fried chicken (well, fried everything), and Castle Cafe's is some of the worst I've ever had. It's dry. It has no taste at all. And they charge a ridiculously high price for it. If you're wanting fried chicken around here go to Popeye's, because Castle Cafe is terrible.

What stands out is the Chicken Fried Chicken and the Cracklin' Gravy (well worth the trip). The pan-fried chicken is good too. It's true this place has a "first seating" appeal and you'll see plenty of elderly diners. But it's still a good place for a home cooked bit of comfort food.

Nice ambiance reflective of this small town in a historic building. I don't know about these other silly reviews about being over 60 ... we are WAY under 60 and DO enjoy the restaurant. In fact, we've been there ONLY with people WAY under 60 ... I don't think I even know anyone over 60. ANYWAY, it's a nice menu with "comfort food" choices. Try the chicken or other dishes when you're in the mood for it in Castle Rock. Recommend!

I've been going the the Castle Cafe for years, and in the past it's been on the better side of ok, but now business must be so good that they don't have to provide good food and service, or maybe they're just getting tired of the restaurant biz. The last 3 times we've been there have been progressively worse, to the point that we probably won't go back. Service has never been a strong point here, but our last time was almost laughable. At first, we had 2 servers ask for our drink order, then we waited more than 10 minutes for them to be brought to us. Our food took almost 30 minutes to arrive even though we didn't order the fried chicken, which we expect to take longer. Our waiter didn't appear again after bringing our food until we finally got up to leave, when he hustled over with our check. The food was pretty lousy, too. It had obviously been sitting for quite a while...it was cold and soggy...and we didn't finish any of our plates. I'm very disappointed that the Castle Cafe has gone so far down.

The atmosphere here during certain times of the day is a little "senior", but overall this place is very nice. The staff is very friendly and treats you as a welcome customer. You'll hear of the fried chicken being the best thing on the menu, and there's no argument there. The burgers are surprisingly good as well. They're far better than the "gourmet burgers" up the street.

Do not come here unless you are over 60 or you have no taste buds. The food is very boring and bland. When we were there on a Sunday afternoon 90% of the customers seemed to be elderly. I do not know if it is just because this is where they have been coming for years but this place definitely doesn't attract many new customers. I had a salad that didn't come with any salad dressing and even worse it was just gross. Adding the bland dressing on top of it didn't really make it much better. We will definitely never come back.

it's pretty good food, but a little pricey. it's all homemade which is hard to come by now in days in a dinner place. if you're looking for a cold beer and some yummy home style food go here. but let me say again...for what you get some of it may cost a little too much. also i was a little disappointed in the steak. not the best.
