Bottom line- AVOID THIS PLACE. Food was barely edible. Service is AWFUL. The sushi was poorly cut and presented. It tasted about the same. The sashimi came out huge thick slices. It did not taste good. Even the soy sauce tasted weird. The tempura was doughy and not good. Udon soup was like eating watered down soy broth. The waitress could not take a simple order. She did not understand what inside out meant for a roll. She did not even assist in cleaning our table -- we had a water spill which she conveniently allowed us to clean up ourselves by giving up a roll of paper towels and then let the mess sit on the table for more than half the dinner. I would give this place zero stars if possible.

I popped my head in just as they were closing and the staff were kind enough to give me seat at the bar. I thought the sushi was great - not just by Colorado standards, but compared to many of the places back in CA. Since I was the only one left in the restaurant, I had a nice chat with the chef and his wife. They were super awesome. Prices were really reasonable as well (I had a couple of orders of nigiri and two rolls and it was less than $30).

These guys seem to stay in business with the motto, "any sushi is good sushi, so why bother trying?" The food was acceptable, although the California was sub par and expensive ($8???). My main complaint is that the place is cluttered and filthy. It feels like it's run by people with a hoarding problem. Also, if you have a filthy kitchen, you probably shouldn't expose it to the public. Reminds me of my first apartment out of college.

We popped in here for lunch as we had a hankering for Japanese food, looked a bit messy but that was ok. It was made clear from the signs that it's a bit low on service expectations which is cool at least we knew that we were expected to clear our table and pick up our food from the counter. We ordered a mix of chicken and beef teriyaki with veges, gyoza/edamame beans and miso. The miso was delicious and very generous with the tofu, my beef teriyaki was also delicious and other than the chicken being slightly on the dry side everyone else enjoyed their chicken teriyaki - looking at previous reviews I could understand why it could take a while to get your food if it was busy but as we were the only customers in at the time we got our food in excellent time. They also had a good selection of Japanese beers in the fridge and also other beverages to chose from. I would definitely go back and recommend to others but could not score higher mainly because of lack of ambiance and service "rules"

Visited 3/13 while on vacation in Breck, and I was craving sushi in a bad way. After reading some reviews I was a bit weary. But we came here because the wait at Mountain Flying Fish was too long - that was a mistake! It's located off the street behind some tourist shops which was pretty lame, no view of the mountains or people watching on the Main Street. The shrimp tempura roll was OK, at best. The spider roll was awful.. which is supposed to be a specialty roll! The service was bad as well. The highlight of our meal was the Sake. Won't be coming back.

Tourist trap! Food is not terrible however they charge for everything including the spicy mayo. I would definitely stay away just because of the fact that they are not honest. The menu is extremely confusing they make it that way so they could overcharge.

Great sushi and great service! We were pleasantly surprised based on the previous reviews. We found the experience to be much better than expected. The appetizer tempura was the best I've had. The rolls were very good quality. Overall an amazing experience! The service was great too!

We came here for lunch because I Yelp'd and saw that they had lunch specials. We ordered the JFC, (Japanese Fried Chicken) beef teriyaki bowl with vegetables, (the bowls come in regular and super sized) and spicy scallop roll. The JFC was pretty good, the beef teriyaki bowl was alright -- the teriyaki sauce was way too sweet for my liking, and the spicy scallop roll was good, minus the rice kept falling apart. I can understand why it fell apart though -- the altitude is high and cooking rice can be difficult. You have to clean up after yourselves, but the owner and his wife were pretty nice and helpful and offered to give us extra paper plates and picked up some of our trash for us. I've had much better Japanese food elsewhere, but I can understand why the food there was only sub-par.

I'm really amazed at the bad reviews, as these guys have been popular with locals for years. The owners are wonderful and the place is great. It's small and simple, but the fish quality is outstanding. The sushi is excellent, comparable with pricey, traditional Japanese places in NYC and other large cities (including Tokyo). Lunch is also fantastic and an excellent value (Volcano Salmon Bowl is awesome!). I can't speak for the non-sushi food, as I've never ordered it, but the sushi is excellent. This place and the chef (Hiro) are a Breck institution, and both he and his wife are very friendly once you break the ice. The place is pricey; no more so than other high quality sushi places in other cities. I'm sorry that the tourists who wrote bad reviews didn't enjoy it. This isn't a place for starving skiers looking for "3 for $10" california rolls. It is a place to get a great spicy scallop with avocado or tobiko + raw egg or fatty salmon nigiri that tastes like real, traditional sushi. If you want traditional Japanese sushi, you'll like it. If you're looking for cheap sushi in large quantities, try elsewhere.

The Good: :: service is really nice and friendly! :: small space so you can hear everyone and not have to yell :: lots of options cooked and non-cooked The Bad: :: their food. sorry but it's like eating fish you stuck into the fridge only covered in saran wrap instead of tight containers for about 6 days. some of the sashimi was so gross and dried out and not fresh, we couldn't finish the dishes. stay away from their ceviche. it's really really really gross. beyond gross. it was more disgusting than eating shrimp poop. The Ugly: :: the food. did i already say that? well, shit. :: overpriced. it was like paying $400 for a shirt at wal-mart. seriously. it was ridiculous. Would I go back? I'm gonna have to go with no, b/c I really am not in the mood to eat kaka fish and pay out the nostrils for it. This place is OUT.

Been here probably 8 times throughout the years since I really love to ski Breck. Never thought about writing a review but thought I'd give my opinion about this place. Love this place and the owners. They are such humble people that sometimes have to deal with rowdy skiers and high expectations. Once I got to know them I actually felt a little embarrassed at my initial thoughts about them. Mari, the owners wife is such a sweet lady. Works very hard and although I thought she was cold and stand offish I found her to be the complete opposite. Once I got her to smile and talk I realized I was just a typical jump to conclusions person. Hiro the owner can be a bit rough around the edges but actually he works so hard and once he felt comfortable talking to me I felt comfortable asking him the tough questions about the food. I told him I've eaten the best sushi in Japan the first time I went there and he looked at me like 'oh, okay. So you are an expert". This guy has some balls opening a sushi place in high altitude and in CO. I asked him about the fish once because I didn't feel it was as fresh as i am used to. He told me that he personally drives to Denver to choose the fish. Sometimes it's good. Sometimes not so good. He doesn't have the luxury like some other big cities or big sushi places to have a buyer on hand to snag the best fish as soon as it comes in. And he cant afford to close just because he couldn't get the top shelf stuff. When I asked Hiro about his California Roll that seemed to be falling apart just looking at it his exact words were, "You try make sushi rice at 7000 feet above sea level. It's hit or miss on the consistency at this elevation." So I bought a rice cooker the next day for my cabin and attempted to cook rice. It came out like crap. WTH? He laughed when I told him about my experience. I'm giving them 4 stars because they provide a service the best they can and I get my fix for sushi while I'm up there. They are really great people and work very hard to run this kind of business with the limited resources they have. I make it a point to go there every time.

Good for a quick bite. Veggie tempura was delish. The rolls were good. Standard sushi fare. Try the ninja roll! Totally unique.

Serves us right for hopping into the first sushi joint we saw without thinking to check Yelp for its rating. A group of about 6 of us came here on a sub-zero degree night to escape the cold and hopefully find some sort of nourishment to help us brave the winds that accompanied our trip back to our timeshare. We were having a late dinner, the restaurant wasn't that full and it still took almost an our to get sushi and rolls. the miso soup had way too much miso in it. the raw fish didn't seem fresh. and the rolls fell apart as soon as they hit the soy sauce. the edamame was decent. but if a japanese restaurant could find a way to mess up edamame, i wouldnt doubt that Wasabi might find a way in the future. We ordered a decent amount of food, a healthy amount of alcohol, but theres no way that the price should have been north of $350 like it was. Think twice about sushi being served in a ski-town, during winter, thats tucked away in one of those little side mini-malls. Why we couldn't figure this out prior to eating there, i'll never know. maybe its the altitude.
(1)Adam A.
The sushi here is sub par, tried about 10 different rolls in a group. You can't really expect good quality fish in the middle of the mountains during winter but it really wasn't worth it. Plus the actual rolls they did were terrible. They were falling apart, very uneven, and looked like they had been done by someone just learning how to make sushi even though the couple who own the place was preparing the sushi. All in all I just can't justify this place again for the price.
(1)Fareed T.
I had the salmon bowl for lunch. It was ok. The sushi was average and isn't setting too well in my stomach. I wouldn't go back. Maybe the other stuff is better?

So after cooking in our condo for three days straight, we decided to treat ourselves to some sushi. Our expectations were quite high based upon the positive reviews this restaurant received from yelp. Unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed. The sushi rolls that I received were not rolled tight and some of them fell apart. The tuna that I received was very fishy tasting and in my opinion was not up to sushi standards. I recognize that I could have possibly received a bad piece of fish. I think the most disturbing thing was the pricing. Now I recognize that we are pretty far from the ocean, but charging $8 for a California roll is highway robbery. Let me be clear that I am willing to spend the benjamins for good sushi. But the pricing for their rolls was just redonkulous. My party of 10 were all in agreement that the sushi was just average. There were some positives about this restaurant; the waitress was quite good and the purple haze sake was da bomb. However, if you really want some Asian cuisine in Breck, go to My Thai.

So, took the GF to Colorado to celebrate her 31st in style. We were a little apprehensive about a place so far from the sea which got only 3.5 stars from yelpers. BUT, we were very happily surprised to get some really good sushi. (Yes, it is pricey and the atmosphere is more 1-2 star, but will trade ambiance for a nice piece of fish anyday... wink). Especially good are: - Cline viognier - Edamame - Volcano roll (yum! spicy tuna tar tare in a slightly sweet sauce) - Rainbow roll - #9 roll (amazing salmon over shrimp tempura and possibly cream cheese) Service was very personable (Elise), they had us in and out in 30-40 mins., which *I* like, and you walk out feeling really good. And started turning my hot GF's birthday week around!

I seemingly have better luck with suchi restaurants either in places near the ocean or in big cities. Not sure if that is in my head or really true but it seems to be the way it is. The biggest irony of Wasabi Japanese restaurant in Breck is that their wasabi was probably the least strong wasabi I have ever had. I take that back, it was definitely the least strong wasabi that I have ever had. could have been a one off thing or could be that Colorado folks just don't like as much kick so they took it down a notch or two. The sushi itself was decent but I just kept getting that eating mexican food in NY or Chicago style pizza in Miami feel where it just didn't feel right. I would also say that the sushi was a little pricy for what you got but it was in the mountains where everything is pricy. If you are in the area and need a sushi fix, it will suffice but also don't go in expecting to be blown away.

This is the only REAL Japanese restaurant in Summit County. The others are owned by Chinese or Thai who are trying to make Japanese sushi. Wasabi is owned and operated by Japanese. Hiro-san, the Master Sushi Chef has been in Summit County for over 20 years and we have followed him from sushi bar to sushi bar. He and his wife take pride in serving the freshest fish and seafood, whether it is raw or cooked. Everything they serve is authentic Japanese and is flown in from either Japan or from other U.S. coasts. We have been eating at Wasabi since they opened over 10 years ago and have never had a bad piece of sushi. Never have we had any rolls that fall apart, or a cooked meal that wasn't delicious. It seems like the bad reviews are from their competition or people who do not really know about real Japanese sushi. They are ridiculous and are totally the opposite of what we have experienced. And, sushi is pricey if you eat at an authentic sushi bar anywhere in the U.S. We live parts of the year in Breckenridge and the other time in Hawaii. We have lots of good sushi restaurants in Hawaii, but Wasabi in Breckenridge is our favorite!

My boyfriend and I went here on a date while we were on vacation in Breckenridge. I was a little disappointed by the atmosphere, which is VERY casual, but the food made up for it! The rolls could have been wrapped a little more tightly, but it was probably the best tasting sushi I've ever had. It's a family-friendly place with nice staff. Maybe not the best place for a nice date, but delicious food!!

Wow!! The BEST fried calamari I've ever had!! The owners & chef's are cute Japanese couple!! Loved sitting @ the bar watching them make the BEST sushi ever! Came twice on my vacation!!! Must visit!!! wait gals are awesome & interact very well with owners..they run a 5-star show!

We go to Breck for snowboarding twice a year and back in March 2010, 4 of us went to Wasabi for some sushi and Asian food. We read review from a local magazine and highly recommend this place and thought we tried it. We're asian food connoisseur and eat sushi in diff part of country and in Japan. We didn't expect it to be super, but at least OK. We were very disapointed, it was gooey and didn't taste like sushi and other food we ordered were not very good. We ate couple sushi and sent it the rest back. They weren't even apologetic or anything. We tolerated other foods that we ordered. When we got our bills, they charged us the couple sushi we ate. It was a very disapointing experience and don't even bother going there if anyone wants decent asian food. I assumed for local people who never ate asian or sushi, would probably believe it's decent.

Great sushi, nice low-key vibe.
(5)Michael A.
Loose rolls and weak service. Enough said.
(1)Cary S.
This is the best sushi outside of Japan, hands-down. I have actually been to Japan and had sushi there. I have eaten at more sushi places than I can throw a stick at and this is the best sushi I have ever had.
(5)Anna H.
This little sushi bar served surprisingly good fish quality. The prices for nigiri/sashimi are pretty high, but the cuts are very large. The bowls are also very generous. I would stay away from the rolls and stick to the dinner menu or the sushi. We had 1 salad, 11 pieces of nigiri, 1 specialty roll, 1 unagi bowl, and a large sake for $115 all-in.
(4)Tracey S.
Sushi was just okay. The atmosphere was very informal. The people were very friendly and the service was good. Probably would not go again.
(2)Rick R.
Don't be fooled. The atmosphere is as dank as the fish is fishy. I love sushi, and the owner used to run the one across the street, which is vastly better. He's a crabby, mercurial guy, and it's simply not a great place to eat. I'd avoid this restaurant at ALL costs. Flying fish is better, but your best bet is to not eat sushi in Breckenridge and go to Sushi Den in Denver as the prices are the same.
(1)Derek D.
This is a nice little place to get your sushi fix or other Japanese eats in Breckenridge. It's a tad pricey however the fish quality is really good and the service is friendly though mainly self-served.
(5)Lori B.
Delicious food! Very fresh! Great flavor! A hidden gem! Dining area is very small but there are three tables on their patio next to the river!
(5)Lillian L.
Worst sushi we have ever had- a group of 10 agreed on every point. The only good thing was the seaweed salad. The sushi just was not fresh and the rolls looked like they were made by someone who has done it for the first time. The way the rolls looked wouldn't have even mattered if the sushi was better. I usually think sushi is pretty much the same across the board, but definitely not in this case. I'm happy none of us got sick. Definitely stay away and wait until you get back to Denver to get some sushi.
(1)Kris P.
If you're looking for great sushi and service, look elsewhere. We came with a party of 6...if you really want to try this place, go alone or as a party of 2 - MAX. The Good: Homemade soy sauce. The Not-so-Bad. Sushi was fresh, but incredibly expensive and overpriced. The Ugly: -Service: SLOOOOWWWW. (One server who works as the waitress, buser, and hostess. Definitely need at least one more person in there.) -Ordered ONE salmon/avocado roll. Waitress dropped off TWO, we told her, she said we could keep it, and then billed us for it. -The rolls: all our 5 rolls were just falling apart and had poor form. Overall: Don't recommend. If they change things up a bit and actually try a little harder to match the quality to the price they charge, then maybe give them a try.
(2)Chuck C.
This little place off Main Street is worth your time if you like unpretentious, elegant sushi. We had everything from saucy rolls, to ultra fatty toro. Everything was great! For the money, you can't go wrong! Will be back for sure!!
(5)Domo O.
Was delicious. I was a sushi chef before. He is from Japan and knows his craft. If you are disappointed that your California rolls aren't super tight it's because he rolls the Japanese way and makes sure the individual grains of rice are not smashed. If you want American sushi don't come here. If you want an authentic experience you will enjoy it. The fish was very fresh try the fatty tuna maki.
(5)Cynthia D.
Be sure to try the awesome Tempura! Rolls are great. All soups delicious! Have awesome kids meals too
(5)Del A.
Nearly 6 years after my first review, we have returned to Wasabi at least once a year while in Breckenridge. Each and every experience has been delicious, we have received excellent, friendly customer service. We will continue to be customers for many years to come. We have been to several of the new sushi places in Ft. Collins, but still, nothing compares to Wasabi. We save our sushi cravings for Breck.
(5)Sarah D.
Delicious japanese food. Ive never ordered the same thing twice here, and have yet to be disappointed. I have to say though that my favorite is the udon noodles. Hiro and Mari are an incredibly sweet couple, and worth taking the time to chat with. Wasabi is probably my favorite restaurant in town.
(5)Jean M.
This was a good find especially in Breckenridge. Authentic Japanese sushi chef, great customer service, and great tasting food. The price of course is typical of a sushi restaurant but definitely a good find.
(4)Dominick M.
Sushi was fresh. Rolls weren't the prettiest but they were good. My party of 5 was very pleased with the food and service. We would go back.
(4)Nick O.
Keep away from this place!!! If I could I would leave no stars at all. We were recommended about this place by a local guy. The most disgusting chicken teriyaki I ever had. It was well over cooked and very dry like it has been cooked few times before. My friend ordered spicy tuna hand roll and an avocado roll, which was not fresh at all. After we complaint, the owner/manager 'apologized' by not charging us the edamame appetizer, but she sure didn't forgot to charge us 20% gratuity!!!! Would not recommend to anyone I know!!!
