The Taj is a great example of an authentic Indian restaurant that still offers the awesome variety and convenience of a buffet. The owners of the restaurant, Vim and Kamala, are wonderful and kind people who truly care about providing quality food in the style of their home country and surrounding areas. I've made quite a few trips, as a Longmont resident, out of my way to include a meal here. Hands down, some of the best in Boulder! Spinach sag, tandoori chicken, lamb curry, chicken curry, vegetable korma, malai kofta, mango custard, and of course .. Chai :) Do yourself a favor and stop by. You'll not be disappointed.

Can you say dinner buffet?! While I have never actually looked at a menu here, I can definitely vouch for their buffet. Their selection is larger than some of the other Indian buffets I've been to in Boulder. I've tried just about every dish they serve in the buffet and I've never been disappointed with any of them. They also have Naan which, strangely, some Indian buffets lack. The restaurant is located on the second floor of a shopping center, which gives you some nice views of the foothills. I like the way this location is laid out; it's easy to maneuver with a hot plate of Indian food. If you're looking for Indian, I would recommend this location.

I LOVE this place ... the food is spectacular. With all the Indian/Nepalese options in Boulder County, I think The Taj stands out as the best. Some highlights: lamb korma, chicken curry, saag paneer, garlic naan, date naan, samosas, mango custard, chai. Oh, and the CARROT PUDDING. My my my. I never knew this was even a thing and now it's a craving. The view is spectacular ... one of the best restaurant views in Boulder, making it a great place to take someone from out of town. Everyone working there is very friendly, and the owners, Kamala and Vim, are especially wonderful. They make you feel like you're a friend having dinner in their home. I can't recommend this place enough. Would eat there every week if it were closer.

I've been to the Taj many a time in my day. It was a staple when I was in college at CU Boulder. Best indian buffet in town. (This review will only focus on my most recent experience). Needless to say though - I'm a big fan of this place, generally. We arrived yesterday just after 3pm and the host was quick to let us know that usually their buffet closes at 2:30p but there was still plenty of food so we could check it out and see if the buffet was the way we wanted to go. He said he would keep it open until 3:30p for us. NICE! They had all of my favorites: I'm not sure what they're called but I LOVE the Taj's fried potato triangles, their honey chicken is amazing, chicken tikka masala - YUM - spicy chili chicken, chicken tandoori, their saag is amazing, their fresh steamed veggies are always very good...they only thing they were out of was naan. WHAT?! Not to worry - they made some fresh naan for us and brought it straight over to our table. I mean. SERVICE! I prefer to go when everything is a bit more fresh than it was yesterday...but that's not their fault. It was nice that he offered to keep the buffet open longer for us AND he delivered fresh naan. Taj - I like you a lot. Keep on doing what you're doing. Because YUM.

Fantastic food and great service. I always enjoy coming to the Taj for their lunch buffet. They have a great variety of curries and dishes. The fried vegetables are always great and I think that their Saag Paneer is one of the better ones I have had. My personal favorite dish from the buffet is he fried bananas! Must try!

The Taj is easily my favorite restaurant in Boulder! This is a place where you'll be greeted with smiles and treated like one of the family. The staff here are fantastic and very friendly. The food is always fresh and hot, and delicious! My favorite thing from the Taj is without a doubt the chai, though. It's the perfect blend, and the owners own secret recipe. Definitely a must have. When in Boulder, stop by! You certainly won't be disappointed.

I loved this restaurant and ate here all the time. But the last 3 orders of the chicken makhani were not as good. It tasted more oily and less flavorful. I have since tried other Indian spots and found royal clay. I will try Taj again at some point because they were by far my favorite in boulder for several years. There chicken soup is really good.

This is hard review to write. Very awkward dining experience, but our meal ended up comped which we appreciated and felt was appropriate. The food on the lunch buffet was very tasty and they had a nice selection for a vegan. The server we had was rather rude. We were sat at the end of their lunch at 2:30 for the buffet and he tried to rush us through our lunch. We would have preferred to know the lunch was ending and we would have gone somewhere else, but instead he sat us and we felt rushed the entire time. When we informed the manager, she yelled across the restaurant chiding the server for his treatment which made us feel even more uncomfortable. So, tasty food, but the place is lacking customer service and profesionality.

I've been watching this restaurant slide to the bottom for a few years now. The Taj used to have delicious food and decent service. Now this restaurant has neither of those two basic aspects. As we surveyed the buffet and put some food on our plates, I noticed a few of the burners, which keep the food warm, were off. I also asked the server to bring us naan, as they were temporarily out. We sat down to a not-even-luke-warm meal and, 10 minutes later, no naan. I asked the server why he didn't bring us naan yet and he flippantly shrugged his shoulders. About the only thing worth enjoying for our $30 was the mango lassi. I don't recommend their buffet any longer, as it's bland, uninspired, and not served warm/hot. There are plenty of much better Indian restaurants in Boulder.

Love going here for their incredible buffet. Tons of options for gluten, meat and dairy free. Best part might be the dairy free saag! When I have a craving for this place I must get it. My favorite Indian food in Boulder!

I still have a lot to learn about Indian food, so I feel like I'm not really a great judge of good or bad. In fact, you should probably stop reading this. I'll continue with my middle of the road thoughts, anyways. Really, I thought it was middle of the road. Not freaking out and running back tomorrow, but not bad food either. Though, while I'm still learning my way around the food, the lunch buffet helps, and they have that! So there's that!

I don't even know if I like Indian food, but I can absolutely tell you that I do really enjoy the Taj lunch buffet. Its affordable, the staff is friendly, and of course, very filling for the price. They offer a variety of foods during the buffet, including honey chicken, steamed vegetables, rice pudding, 3 varieties of rice, naan, salad bar, and of course curry. The chai is not included in the buffet price, but it is excellent.

  • Geri L.

This place USED to have delicious food all around. That was at least a year ago. Went back today for lunch at their buffet. The prices have gone up but the quality of their offerings went south. The chai was barely warm. The salad bar was sparse. The staff were friendly.

Best Indian buffet in Boulder. Maybe not perfect, but if you like Indian buffet the value and quality is hard to beat.

  • Ashish S.

I went there for lunch buffet today and had a horrible experience. Dishes were not clean. There were no bowls. Food looked to have been cooked 3-4 days ago. I ate a few bites of appetizer and had a weird feeling in my stomach. I'm writing this while still having the strong pain. I would never go to this awful place again.

    (1)
  • Jennifer C.

The food is not great and the service is unfriendly. Very bland. I have gone three times as a single diner and they always seem put out to seat and serve me, presumably because they cannot make a big enough tip to make it worth their while to fill my ice water.

When in Boulder, get yourself over to The Taj for the fantastic lunch buffet. The homemade chai is the best in the Rockies.

AWFUL service. Do NOT go here. In addition to the food being overpriced, they overcharge. Servers are extremely rude. Never going back here again.

Really not worth it for the money. We had the buffet, everything was decent. Staff was friendly but we didn't have a actual server, so everyone came around and asked us the same things a few times. But attentive. Oh. Rice pudding was awesome. You can write on the tables but they bring you out a old and busted crayon and pencil box. Haha. I tried everything cause that's the way I am. :-) I would say I liked about half of what I tried. Don't try any of the other dessert they are bland.

*Sigh*, Taj, I've really tried. Royal Peacock is gone, I don't really like Tandoori Grill, we have a Sherpa's in Golden, Himalaya's is temporarily closed, so this is about it for me in Boulder. Every time I get the craving, I want this place to be great. Luckily, it really does have some highlights: 1. They have some simple steamed vegetables that are fresh, well seasoned and well cooked, consistently all the time. 2. They have saag with and without cream, which creates a different flavor and offers a healthy option. 3. The pakora are crispy, the carrot pudding is amazing, the banana pakora are pretty good. The bad: 1. Every time I try to eat chicken here, it is filled with cartilage. As in, I have never been able to eat a bite-sized piece of chicken without having to discard half of it. On multiple occasions I have bit into small bones in the tikka dishes. This includes the makhani, the honey chicken and the chili chicken 2. The samosas are unwieldy in size and greasy. 3. The naan often runs out and isn't replaced 4. Service is ok but quite spotty. It can be very difficult to get your check when you need it, despite 3-4 waitstaff for a one-room restaurant. 5. The price comes to just under $11 per person for lunch. That doesn't include tip or any beverages. Dishing out a minimum of $13 for lunch for a buffet I'll eat 1-2 small plates from is just too much. Sorry, Taj. I keep trying but it doesn't get any better.

The food here is soooo amazing! I have traveled in India before and this place is the only indian restaurant I have tried since then that has food that compares. The service is really great as well!

Oh no. Just went here for a birthday dinner and were we disappointed? OMG. I read someone else's review a bit too late. Tasteless calories is an understatement. The fish was soggy and the curry was so watered down it made it almost worth walking out for.

  • Ollie D.

I'm going to hold my breath and resist the urge to give this place one star. The food is industrial at best, nothing even remotely interesting and the quality is barely passible. Ok, I get that some people just want a lot of food, and don't care too much what it tastes like. The prices are fair if you intend to stuff yourself on empty and tasteless calories.

  • Christopher C.

He had great food at the buffet an hour before the closed. They had everything you could want, and more. I think for a buffet you can't get much better.

  • Azan D.

Overall the food is pretty good, and the service is great. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. We went for the dinner buffet, at $15 dollars a plate it's a bit pricey. One thing I have to mention is that I found a spider in the naan, tiny little thing both my friend and I saw.

Kamala catered our family reunion and the food was beyond exceptional. Beyond a doubt the very best Indian food I have ever had and I have had a lot of great Indian food. Thank you Kamala and the Taj for the exquisite food.

    I. am. so. full! I went to the Taj for their lunch buffet--$9.99. They let me create a to-go box since I was alone and wanted to head back to my office. The food was so good--and by that I mean greasy, deep fried, Indian food good. I stuffed my face really fast. This is the type of food that you can't stop eating because it's so tasty. You start to get that full feeling and you realize that if you don't stop eating you are going to hurt later, but you keep eating anyway. Now I feel gross. But that's my fault. I really liked the honey chicken glaze and this potato puff triangle thing. They were super delish. The rice was also a hit. Definitely a fan of the buffet at the Taj, but might not return too frequently for it since I will remember this stomach-ache.

While the location is admittedly awkwardly situated above a Trek bicycle shop in the Bellmar shopping center, which is a little difficult to get to if you aren't travelling north on Broadway or east on Baseline, it's beyond worth dealing with driving in Boulder. I have been there several times, on dates and with my family on special occasions - each time we've gone the buffet route, and I have never been disappointed. The price is what one might expect for a buffet, and is more than reasonable when you consider just how flavorful their food is. I have been searching for a good Indian buffet since moving to Colorado, and this is it. While they are a little slow with getting drink orders in, such as chai teas and mango lassies, they are always very attentive to water glasses and empty plates. Last note? The best vegetable korma and rice pudding I have ever had. If you are passionate about flavorful food, you should visit The Taj.

  • Matt G.

Great buffet. Pleasantly surprised by the salad items, which seem neglected at most indian buffets. Chai was good, not included free with buffet. Some highlights: Saag, chicken makamal, vegetable korma, and fried bananas.

I LIVE for the lunch buffet at The Taj. Yes, I said it. The only other buffet I would go to is breakfast in Las Vegas but I'm not telling that wild story right now. Anyway, the buffet is huge and The Taj often has new choices. I actually love The Taj so much that I don't even bother with other Indian restaurants. The food is never dry, not over salted and always fresh and flavorful. The only reason I don't eat here more often is because I'm such a pig. The latest new choice is egg curry, which I haven't had since being in India! Try it!!!

This is my wife's favorite restaurant. I love the large buffet with a nice selection of of chicken, fish, lamb, and vegetable dishes (the samosas are my favorite), always fresh and well-prepared. This is the place to experience authentic Indian food in Boulder!

I went here with a friend who was three sheets to the wind. Not because he was drunk but because he just had laser surgery on his eyes and was doped up. He was hungry and thought of Indian food which brought us here. It was during lunch time and we had a great buffet. My friend could have enjoyed himself more but after all he did just get out of surgery. He recommended it despite the state he was in and his suggestions were always on target no matter what state he was in. Now I know a good Indian restaurant next time I am in Boulder!

We have only gotten carry out and it has been pretty good. Baingan bharta is great and got 3 servings out of the portion offered! My husband likes the vegetarian saag. We did have to ask for extra rice but all in all great tasting and affordable for the amount of portions offered.

We went for the lunch buffet a few weeks ago. It's in a odd location - in the upstairs of a strip mall - and it's very brightly lit. There is a lot of seating and the restaurant is very clean. The only thing I didn't like was the waiter - he took us to our seats and then disappeared. I know you don't need a lot when you're eating at the buffet, but getting refills on our waters and having the chance to order additional tea, etc. would have been nice. It also took me 10 minutes to flag someone down to get our check - and our waiter was still nowhere to be found. The food was fantastic. I've eaten at a few local Indian buffets and this one is definitely the best so far. The tandoori chicken was moist and crave-worthy. The saag was pretty good. The naan was fantastic. The buffet was well organized and well labeled. The place was pretty busy, but they did a great job of keeping plenty of fresh and hot food out on the table. I look forward to going here again. Maybe next time, we'll get a waiter who gives a darn about our dining experience. Fingers crossed!

Excellent lunch buffet. Quality food, breath-taking ambiance. The service could be a tad better, but overall I am very satisfied with the cleanliness, upscale feeling, and the outstanding view of this establishment. The food is divine. I've had a lot of indian food in my day, however the lunch buffet at The Taj is absolutely superb. Though I do wish they had a student discount... $10 is a tad steep. This place would present a LOT more bang for your buck if it was an $8 buffet.

This was quite a pleasant surprise! I went in for lunch and am normally turned off by buffets but this one looked tasty and everything was yummy! Not knock your socks off...but highly enjoyable. Well priced around $8 too. Service was friendly. Great views of the flatirons, nice natural light, and you can be in and out quickly. I highly recommend it for lunch.

We went there for a friend's birthday. Two couples and our four children. When we arrived, we were asked by 3 different wait staff, 2 times each what we wanted to drink. At least two of those times was while I was still standing. Stop pestering me already! Once we got settled we were ready to order, but then it was over 10 minutes before a waitress came to take our orders. I ended up ordering the buffet because I wasn't sure what I wanted to eat since there was no Tikka on the menu (or the buffet, for that matter). I also ordered the buffet for my kids. (Although they offer a children's buffet price it was still $8 per child for dinner, not including drinks. There is no children's menu.) There was an ample salad bar, though I didn't haven any. I tried several of the chicken dishes, and convinced my kids to also try them. The chicken makhani was close to a tikka masala, but mine had some gristle in it. The kids like the rice and naan, but it's hard to go wrong with that. They liked dessert and the plain steamed veggies got eaten. My husband ordered off the menu, getting lamb korma (very fatty) and naan (undercooked). By all reports the saag was good and the servings from the menu entrees were ample. But the real reason for the 1-star rating was that the staff was alternately too-attentive and rude. On the rude side: With two families we split the bill. Since it was a birthday dinner and a social event, we were not in a rush to pay and leave. When the waiter returned for our payment on the check, he asked if we were ready. When we said no, he gave a visible and audible gesture of frustration and stomped away. Wow. Their tip dropped by 5% right like that. I could see if they wanted us to go because there was a dinner wait, but we at early and there were still empty tables, including at least one large table. So we were not preventing them from serving other customers. It was totally uncalled for. For our Himalayan/Nepalese food fix we pretty much stick to The Kathmandu in Nederland.

Haven't eaten here in a while cause last time I got sick. Not food poisoning just ate too much heavy food. Very large buffet. Lots of flavor, but a little on the heavy side. There are def a few better buffets in town.

We went there for a lunch buffet. No labels what so ever for any of the dishes that are there. There are so many dishes, but none of those are worth eating. Chicken, is stale or too greasy. We somehow had some bread and vegetarian curries. They are not bothered to refill the items(even though we requested them). Of all the things, I was surprised to see one of the waiters giving us bill, much before we finish our first serving. If I am visiting Boulder again, I will not visit this place!

I'm going to keep this simple because I'm currently noshing on their samosas and don't want them to get cold. Buy the samosas. They are mind blowing and come with great sauce. The buffet is fantastic if you're cheap like I am. The entrées are seasoned perfectly. The owner and staff and so kind and always give me free food. Just go here... You will leave with a tummy full of happy curry and rice. And samosas are perfect for a hangover, just fyi.

This is my second visit. I had dine-in dinner buffet a few weeks back and yesterday I had lunch buffet to-go. Let me say the only reason they don't get 5 stars is because the to-go container is plastic and burns your hands with the hot food and when they run out of food it takes them awhile to replenish. The food is actually great. Such a variety of dishes to choose from. I LOVE their naan. I can't even describe the great taste ( I want some right now). Their Kheer (rice pudding) is actually pretty decent as well. The chicken Tikka and grilled onions are good. Potatoes Aloo are good, but the potatoes are cut in such a large manner they don't soak in the flavor well. But seriously, if you are near and like Indian stop in. If you like it hot you may be disappointed since the buffet is not hot at all, but still very tasty.

I love the Taj. When I was younger and I lived in Estes Park, I came here a lot, since my parents were always trying to find intellectual and ethnic fun. We'd come in later in the evening when it was cold and dark outside - I'd have a bowl of soup, my brother would draw on the paper-covered tables, and my parents would chat with Kamala, the owner. Such are the cozy memories of childhood. To me, the Taj is still cozy. Today was the second time I've taken E (it's where he had his first Indian food - yay!) and I must say he is a big fan. I, of course, have always been one. I love their lunch buffet; at about $9 a person, with tons of options to choose from, it's definitely worth the money. E and I stuffed ourselves full of basmati rice, lentils, naan, curry chicken, samosas, pakoras, and the best rice pudding around and left very happy...and kind of uncomfortable from all the food! The restaurant is perched up on the second floor with pretty good seating and a full bar, stocked with lots of things I did recognize and a few intriguing bottle that I did not. I'll take a closer look next time. Their chai is delicious - it's the traditional earthy drink that isn't complete sugar overload. And I love their rice pudding - I think they put rose water into it? I had two bowls....such a pig! And I love the treats they have for you to sample as you're going out the door - fennel seeds and rock sugar to cleanse your breath. So very cool! And much better than a mint. I love the Taj. With it's yummy food and my personal history with the place, I'll definitely keep coming back.

Disclosure: I don't care for Indian cuisine. This place failed to persuade me otherwise. The decor was pleasant and the wine and cocktail selection was adequate. However, it's a lot of steps to climb for a mediocre meal. The salad bar at Whole Foods was culinarily superior.

The food is good. The honey chicken and the naan are great. Lunch buffet is the way to go. Yes, this place has some negative reviews. The existence of better Indian restaurants out there doesn't make this one automatically worse, however.

Fan-frickin-tastic! I don't know if scabby donkey was on the Lunch Buffet, but I would have eaten it following a four mile trail-hike. When it's cold outside, the hot deliciousness inside iz zuperb.

I ate here based on a friend's recommendation, and the food was not good at all. I'm a vegetarian, and I had the kofta and the vegetable korma, along with the saag and the baingan bharta. None of the food looked very fresh, and it was pretty bland. I think that there's better Indian food to be found in the freezer aisle at the grocery store.

  • Thenameless C.

Buffet only at lunch. Nowhere was this advertised until after you walk in. While the butter chicken was decent, the quality of chicken throughout the dishes (honey chicken, chile chicken, butter chicken, chicken tandoor) was low. I couldn't tell if it was thigh or just really subpar breast. Regardless it wasn't good. The saag was decent. The naan, having sat on the buffet far too long was crisp and not chewy at all. Cracker like even. The samosa was poorly done as well, reminding me more of Chinese crab rangoon, then the Indian food I had in Detroit last week I'm making my comparison to. It's location, near campus, must be it's saving grace.

The Taj offers what I believe to be the best Indian food available in Boulder at the moment. Be warned, though, the food is so good that you will overeat and walk out of there feeling like you're on the verge of explosion.

Not bad, but by far not my favorite Indian food in Boulder. The buffet is your standard fare, although it's more expensive than most. I would probably not come back here with so many other great options nearby.

Despite the fact that I grew up in Boulder, I only managed to try The Taj last weekend. I can't really give a reason that I never tried it before, but after reading the mostly glowing reviews I had pretty high expectations. I have to say that my first impression was pretty poor. The interior is pretty dingy and in need of fresh paint or some kind of redecorating. There were sheets of paper placed over the white tablecloths on every table, which looked really odd. If the purpose of the paper was to keep the tablecloths clean, then that definitely wasn't working. The tablecloth on our table was filthy (and it was only 1pm, which leads me to believe the stains were from the previous night's dinner), and my napkin was also filthy. One of our water glasses had a big chip in it, but the hostess noticed that and replaced it immediately. The booth we were seated in also really needed to be wiped down, as there were big, greasy spots on the seats. Overall, not a good start. As for the food, my husband and I both had the lunch buffet and there was a good variety of entrees and side dishes to choose from (and out of all the Indian/Nepalese buffets we've tried, it had the largest selection of meat dishes as well). There was also a salad section and rice and carrot puddings. It did take a while for depleted items to be replaced (I always have saag as my "dessert" and we had to wait a good 20-30 minutes for more to come out), but everything was hot and seemed fresh. My main disappointment with the food was that it was very mediocre. In my mind, there was nothing that stood out enough to make me want to come back to The Taj specifically. It was very typical of what I'd expect at any Indian buffet... there wasn't anything wrong with it, but it was all extremely mild and honestly just kind of bland. The chai was very average as well, and a bit on the sweet side for my tastes. My husband and I both agreed that our experience at The Taj was very similar to the one we had at Yak & Yetti... great variety of food, but nothing was really worth going back for. We much prefer to have a smaller selection of entrees that really taste great. The staff was friendly and seemed attentive, and if not for the dirty linens I probably would've rounded up to three stars. Also, call me a hippie, but the use of large sheets of paper to keep the tables "clean" bothered me purely from a waste standpoint. There was a visible huge, overflowing garbage pail full of used, crumpled up paper sheets and it just seems like glass table tops would be a much better (and cleaner) option. I might give The Taj another chance in the future, but I'd probably order from the menu next time.

Delicious. Never fails to disappoint me. All you can eat naan bread? What more can you ask for? They also offer a salad bar and a few vegetarian options. Their saag paneer is great! And for a buffet it's really affordable.

Came for the lunch buffet with a friend. I loved it. They have a good selection of food, all tasty. The service was good. Had plenty of water at all times. I enjoyed myself and would definitely return.

Solid Indian restaurant. I've been to the Taj many times and have always gone for the buffet. Go during lunch if you can--essentially the same food as dinner but nearly half the price.

Good solid Indian food, the lunch buffet rocks, and they have a punch card for it if you ask. Now who could pass up a free lunch? Their Mango lassis are always great.

For boulder this might pass as good..but having left, I discovered that it is pretty poor. Don't get me wrong it is really good but there are a bunch of other places that are much better!

First off, I realize my opinion is probably not shared by many. And that is precisely why I'm writing it. The Taj is one of the most popular Indian restaurants in Boulder (it's often the top pick for Indian in Daily Camera's annual "Boulder Gold" issue). That does not mean it's the best...it simply means the average person likes it more than the other options. So indeed, if you are like the average person, you will probably like this restaurant quite a bit. However... I've eaten here several times over the last several years, and the results are always the same no matter the dish: relatively bland and uninspiring. And of course, avoid the buffet unless you are relatively unfamiliar with Indian food and prefer the spicing level to be on the mild side...buffets at Indian restaurants are good only to get an idea of the different dishes they make, and always makes me feel like cattle at a trough. Order it from the menu and get it spiced the way you want it. Just remember extra heat can only do so much to a base recipe that is on the bland side...it will help, but it's not going to make it a winner. But let's face it, compared to other cuisines, even bad Indian food is pretty good, so in a pinch this place will certainly suffice (there's only a few I've tried that are virtually inedible...the one by the Colony 12 theater in Superior comes to mind). But if you want more herbs, more spices, more intrigue, and just overall better cooking, go to Tandoori Grill or Royal Peacock.

I have never understood why people rave about the Taj, the Tandoori Grill and Royal Peacock are far better.

The Taj is the best! Fairly cheap and the dinner buffet is really good. I totally fell in love with Indian cuisine after eating at the Taj. Definitely the best Indian place in Boulder and the surrounding area. I also like that it usually has a pretty quiet atmosphere.

Just had their lunch buffet. Great selection! Food was a little bland and needed to be spicier though and the nan was cold and overcooked. A large Flying Horse helped...

Ooh, The Taj! Great as a date restaurant (even with someone you dislike! [as long as he is paying.]) All you can eat buffet! And the most craziest spectacularist desserts, I swear. But don't cut in line. The Taj is fancy shmancy, and with just enough food for you to purge yourself after a visit if you wish not to gain ten pounds. Otherwise, a great place for friends to visit...and share... ...the bill ...because it will ..be shteeeeeeep! Mango Lasse is the Best!

I just had another great meal at the Taj; this low-key, strip-mall Indian restaurant consistently serves up a varied and tasty buffet. Unlike some other local Indian joints, Taj puts out all quality dishes on the buffet; they don't place a lot cheap filler around one or two decent items. The samosa are some of the best I've ever had, and the saag paneer is just about perfect. Tonight they had five different kinds of chicken, all great. And the service is solid - the friendliest team in town. Oh - and they have a great selection of cheap imported Asian beer. Mmm.

I haven't ordered from the menu yet, but the buffet is the best in town. They offer it for dinner as well as lunch. An enormous variety of dishes at the buffet - more than any other I've seen - and half or more are vegetarian. Standard decor but really nice owners who kept checking on us and wondering what we thought of the different dishes.

Must try!

Oh no. Just went here for a birthday dinner and were we disappointed? OMG. I read someone else's review a bit too late. Tasteless calories is an understatement. The fish was soggy and the curry was so watered down it made it almost worth walking out for.

He had great food at the buffet an hour before the closed. They had everything you could want, and more. I think for a buffet you can't get much better.

Overall the food is pretty good, and the service is great. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. We went for the dinner buffet, at $15 dollars a plate it's a bit pricey. One thing I have to mention is that I found a spider in the naan, tiny little thing both my friend and I saw.

    I. am. so.

Try it!!!

  • Jet K.

The dinner buffet is a huge spread. My only criticism is that most of the dishes were not labeled and I had to keep trying to get the servers to tell me what a dish was. I am a vegetarian so did not want to be eating chicken accidently thinking it was tofu or something else. It was hard to decipher what was animal and what was not. Seems like a simple thing to remedy. I did appreciate that they offered both a dairy and non dairy Saag. I also would have liked to see tofu in some of the dishes but it was nowhere to be found. The food tasted good and I loved the rice pudding.

After eating at the Taj, the Tandoori Grill, Namaste Nepal, Himalayas, Sherpa's, and Bombay Bistro, I've made my decision that the Taj is, overall, the best. No, I haven't been to every Indian/Nepalese restaurant in Boulder (just the ones above), and no, the Taj does not do every dish better than the rest of these restaurants. Namaste has the best saag, Himalayas has great naan, etc... but if you want a consistently tasty spread of dishes, none of which will disappoint, and for a really low price at lunch, the Taj is the way to go. Their lunch buffet is $9.99, 7 days a week, and it's a great deal. (I wouldn't do dinner - it's a good deal more, although I don't remember how much more - and the food isn't appreciably different.) There's a variety of vegetarian and meat dishes, none of which will wow you (except perhaps the honey chicken, has a satisfying crunch that veritably explodes with sweet honey), but all of which will satisfy. Make sure to make a run for the chicken tikka right as it comes out of the oven - it will change the dish from merely good to melt-in-your-mouth exploding-flavor charred perfection. Also have plenty of naan on hand to mop up your saag. Beware the vegetable korma as it has all the addictiveness of a bag of MSG-laced chips. The service is spotty here - I've been left sitting with my check and credit card ready for longer than a half hour, and sometimes you have to make other excuses for a server to come to your table before your water gets refilled. But hey - it's a buffet, what do you expect? Oh, and leave room for the rice pudding! Trust this!

Though the Taj is not and has not ever been a favorite for me, my family, or my friends, we do eat there every now and then. We love Indian food and would be so pleased to have an Indian restaurant in Boulder to adore; this isn't it. They seem to try hard, though. Oh, well, it's usually crowded and for many, it's a favorite. That's wonderful, isn't it?

Disclosure: I don't care for Indian cuisine. This place failed to persuade me otherwise. The decor was pleasant and the wine and cocktail selection was adequate. However, it's a lot of steps to climb for a mediocre meal. The salad bar at Whole Foods was culinarily superior.

Very good lunch buffet... decently priced for a buffet, and everything was fresh. Great time to go if you're wanting to try a little bit of everything.

Went for a late lunch and found the buffet fresh and delicious. I was planing on cold, picked through food because I arrived 20 min before the buffet closed but to my surprise it was full of great fresh food. YUM!

This is the best Saag I have had in Boulder. Every Nepalese or Indian restaurant I go to I order the Saag. This I found to be the best.

I wandered in here one day after making the unpleasant discovery that Nepal Cuisine was closed on Sundays. This review has been waiting over a month for me to write it, so my memory is somewhat spotty and faded, but I made some notes. Of course, any photos I took got fried when my old camphone got drowned in the middle of my rafting expedition, doh. The (co-)owner, Kamala, was very gracious and is pretty much the stereotypical picture of what your mind grabs for a template when you think "Indian woman" - colorful, flowing robes; graceful movements, and if I recall, I think she wore some kind of jewelry adorning her head. The place has been in at least 2 locations but maybe 3 in Boulder for over a decade. The economic downturn has kind of been hurting them, which is a shame, because Kamala was super gracious when I stepped in -- right about when they were closing up lunch hours at 2:30pm. I was brought a cup of scalding hot chai out of a silver samovar in a very nice china cup , which she says that she tries to provide to all her customers -- some kind of little nicety. It was a pleasant gesture. Kamala takes very little time off apparently, and is often there 7 days a week -- not full-time, because she has kids in day care and 1 or 2 other things going on, but that kind of dedication is pretty amazing to see. I couldn't do that, even at a job I adored -- I need some 'me' time and I think most people do. Not so with Kamala apparently...very dedicated, but a little sad and a little spooky to think about... Their buffet appears to be very authentic; not the biggest nor the smallest in # that I have seen. Most were empty or nearly so, having been the tail-end of the lunch hour. That was all right by me, I was grabbing a take-out order. I did sample 1 lonely bite-size chunk of chicken from a tin, which *I* thought tasted spiced to perfection, whatever it was. Your experience may vary. There are quite a few vegetarian and seafood specialties on the menu for those curious, but I ordered the chicken curry, the garlic naan and the pyaji pakora. I found an interesting thing out about theri pakora -- they don't deep fry some vegetable with it because Kamala said it...throws off the flavor? Or something? (NOW I wish I'd taken better notes). It was something really odd, and something I didn't quite believe, because Nepal Cuisine managed to do it. Was it the shredded carrots? I dunno. All I know is their base pakora seems to be largely onions -- which is fine, but I want more than *that* when I get pakora. I don't recall what else they tossed in there for me, but Kamala did make sure I was satisfied with the vegetable variety and added something extra for me when requested. The dishes were all flavorful, the chicken tender, the garlic naan could have stood to have more garlic in it, and the pakora were very good, though not up to Nepal Cuisine's. SO. Decor? 3 stars -- at least a lot of it seemed to be authentically Indian and not some arrangement just cobbled together. Pleasant enough. Food? 4 stars. I can't vouch for the quality of the buffet, but my take-out order was excellent, if a bit long in preparing/cooking. The place Taj really shines though, at least if you get Kamala, is in service and hospitality. 5 stars there. Average it all up, and it's 4 stars. Not my 1st choice for Indian in Boulder, but a long way from my last.

$16 for korma FOR LUNCH plus you forget the naan after you verbally verified "you say one naan?" One of the most over-priced meals I have ever had. Boo this place, boo.

Solid Indian restaurant. I've been to the Taj many times and have always gone for the buffet. Go during lunch if you can--essentially the same food as dinner but nearly half the price.

    (3)

Good solid Indian food, the lunch buffet rocks, and they have a punch card for it if you ask. Now who could pass up a free lunch? Their Mango lassis are always great.

For boulder this might pass as good..but having left, I discovered that it is pretty poor. Don't get me wrong it is really good but there are a bunch of other places that are much better!

  • Ernest C.

Sooo good. Before eating there I thought I didn't like Indian food. Nan bread is my favorite. Perfect lunch spot: delicious food, moderate price, nice atmosphere.
