I took my mother on her 91st birthday to the Dining Hall and we had a wonderful Sunday brunch. Our server was totally on top of it and the whole experience was enjoyable. Unfortunately it was at the beginning of March so we couldn't enjoy the views from the patio but that wasn't the chef's doing :) The prior time I had eaten here, I was unimpressed but this trip was quite the opposite. The manager (Kasi) paid us a visit and was very gracious in addition to the delicious food. I shall return!

Since they redid the menu it is truly one of the best places to eat in Boulder! The views are awesome, you can hike beforehand, and their food is (now) great. They have food from a local farm and their prices are reasonable. I definitely recommend it!

I don't know how anyone could have a bad experience here. We took a nice hike in the mountains right after dawn and then topped it off with breakfast here. Quick note -- the bathrooms here are cleaner than [insert any name here]. These bathrooms were spotless with a wonderful clean smell. This guarantees a strong review. Back to the restaurant -- We had chai tea and breakfast tea. Both were very good. The presentation and quality of the breakfast tea was especially pleasing. Two eggs w/ crispy bacon and fruit was very good. The honey dew melon, pineapple, watermelon, and cantaloupe were all ripe and delicious even out of season. I had eggs, crispy fried potatoes, bacon, mushrooms, and tomatoes with country gravy and a biscuit. This tasted delicious! I would like a little more food, but my love handles are probably better for it. This place has great seating areas to stay and talk in front of the fire. The bar is a full-bar w/ quality beers on tap, and if a football game had been on tv, I'm not sure i would've left today.

I'm surprised this place doesn't have a higher overall rating. I really loved everything I had here. I stopped in a little later on a week night and it was really quiet, with most people sitting outside (too chilly for me, so I chose inside). The restaurant has a very cozy, country feel, which I really enjoyed. My food was amazing. I had the brussels sprouts and the beet salad. So delicious!! I had a Rockies Mule cocktail (can't remember the exact name) which was also very well made and refreshing. Overall the cost was very reasonable for the quality. I think the world needs more of these kinds of restaurants. Wait time for my food was acceptable and my waitress was very friendly. I wish Chautauqua was closer to where I live!

New favorite quick get-out-of-town romantic dinner. Porch seating with fresh and local food and excellent service? YES!

Thi review is fo the afternoon tea service, not a regular meal. The tea was fine, but the rest was terrible...and certainly not worth the $22 it costs. The scones and other baked goods were dry and it seemed they were days from being freshly baked. The sandwiches were awful, each person had one fourth of a curried potato (really?) and smoked trout sandwich...freshly made, but weird flavors. There were none of the traditional sandwiches such as ham salad, cucumber, etc. Despite the small plate at the beginning, the food was terrible. At the end there was an ice cream bon bon that melted into a ouddle on the plate iright away. My friends and I won't be back.

We have eaten here several times. It is located in beautiful surroundings. Breakfast after a wonderful hike is perfect here. Wait staff friendly and accommodating.

My wife and I had dinner there last night My onion soup was very good. my wife had Lentil soup. very little flavor and warm. It seems the owners are intent on maxing out their profit margin instead of giving the customer their moneys worth. I had the Tenderloin. three very small slices and way, way over salted and no flavor. My wife had the trout. it too was very salty. We both left hungry. This was our second try at one of the owners restaurants. The first one at Zucca's was just as bad. With the beautiful interior, fire place going, this could become one of Boulders top places for locals to go for dinner. Instead, it was almost empty last night. These folks could learn a lot from the owners of the Med, in both size portions and quality of food preparation. We will not be back !

We went to brunch midday on Saturday and had a pretty good experience overall, with just a few flaws. We were seated promptly and greeted by our server, who was friendly and helpful, but needed a little bit more training when it comes to food handling. He brought over hot tea and coffee for people at our table and told us that there was a speck of tea in the creamer pitcher because when he blew some dust off of the teapot, a speck of tea fell into the cream. First of all, I have to question why the teapots are dusty and not rinsed before they leave the kitchen. Second of all, food safety rules dictate that a server should never blow on, or over, a customer's food, so that was a little disconcerting. And third of all, no matter how it happened, if a speck of food gets into the creamer pitcher, then you dump it out and get a new pitcher, rather than telling the guests about it and waiting to see if they ask you to get a new one. Then, he brought out a hot chocolate which had spilled over onto its plate, completely soaking the napkin on it, simply saying, "sorry, it spilled a little." That's acceptable service for a diner, perhaps, but for a nice brunch, I kind of expected him to take the minute to wipe off the cocoa glass, get a new plate, and re-serve it rather than serve it with a big spill on it. Clearly not as big a deal as the first instance, but not great. Beyond that, though, the food was pretty good, the portions were an appropriate size for the price we paid, and everyone seemed nice there. If we stay at Chautauqua again, we'd probably come back, since it's unlikely we'd get that particular server again.

I was underwhelmed. Walking up the restaurant looks charming. The same for the interior. The menu looked tasty but alas it was not. My husband and I ordered appetizers and drinks. My mile high mule tastes like ginger beer. I couldn't detect a pinch of liquor. Hubby ordered the pouting which came out saturated, soft and salty. I ordered the mussels which were grainy and flavorless. Next time well pack a picnic before a show. Bummer as I had hoped for more. Side note our server was spacey...

Location and ambiance of Chautauqua Dining Hall deserves 5 stars. The building is historic, nestled at the base of the Flatirons amongst the bungalows. Charming. However, the food and service is only 2 stars. A group of 8 of us met for dinner before a concert at the barn. Cocktails at the bar were fine. Our meals, supposedly made from mostly local ingredients, were on the small side and just OK. I ordered a flank steak--came as 4 slices of meat (cooked to the right temperature, so that's a positive) with a small portion of vegetables. Would not have been enough food if I hadn't ordered an appetizer. My husband ordered fried chicken. His portions were larger, but the chicken was salty and a little greasy, mashed potatoes were lacking flavor. We met for dinner at 6:30 before a 9 pm show, and the service was so slow we had to rush out to make the show in time. We had to flag down staff to take drink and main course orders. Our waitress brought the check about 75% through the main course without offering dessert or coffee. We ended up not really having time for dessert and coffee anyway. Could be a stellar experience by improving service and paying attention to the details of the meal.

This was the worst dining experience I have had in many years! The service was incredibly slow, waitress was rude, food came out cold and was missing parts of our order. Food that was sent back to be heated then came back burnt and inedible. Came for the setting but won't do it again- not worth it at all!

Hall burger with bacon was unbelievable!! And roasted sprouts yummy! Perfect meal before or after a hike. Great service and beautiful scenery!

Not the best brunch in Boulder, at least not yet. Service was passable but nothing special. My mother in law was very confused by our server but I'm not sure who's fault that really was. We were a large group (8 people) but we didn't have any complicated orders or anything. Nothing we ordered was memorable. My husband's tacos were interesting, but my benedict was cold and under-seasoned. My sister-in-law had the vegetarian tofu scramble thing, and was disappointed by the lack of vegetables. The setting is gorgeous, and I love the remodel and all the decorations. Hopefully the kitchen and staff will get their acts together and this will live up to its full potential in time.

  • Robert F.

Great remodel, lots of inventive food served in a warm and inviting environment with great views. We sat at a wonderful table next to the fireplace. My Tofu Scramble was tasty but served lukewarm - then apologetically and quickly reheated. Chai was excellent but prepared lukewarm - a thermometer would fix this. I didn't have the heart to sent it back. Water glasses were not refilled promptly. Had to walk around the restaurant to find spoons as none of the the friendly wait staff were on the floor. We watched a couple enter and wander around in search of a hostess to seat them. What is going on in this place?

    (3)
  • Lynda M.

Food served cold. I could tell the food had been sitting under a heart lamp for a while. The food is also frozen.... tastes like it, you can tell. They claim to use food that comes from their "farm," but this is NOT true. I know people who have worked there than can attest to that. The only reason I didn't give one star is because it's a beautiful location. Go for a cocktail or a soda and then have a picnic on the lawn...

We had brunch here this week for an off site department meeting and we had a great experience. The outside porch was shaded and had great views of the park and hanging plants. The service was fast and friendly and the bus boys were always close by for water or clearing plates. The food was also great. I had the breakfast burrito which tasted great and is really big. After brunch we went next door to the General Store and got a scoop of ice cream and sat on one of the many park benches watching people pass. Great experience on a beautiful day with a great backdrop!

I really enjoyed this little place, it's very cozy and the servers were all very nice. The bar is nice and the fireplaces warm you up as soon as you enter. We stayed close so we ended up eating here for breakfast, lunch and dinner during our time in Boulder. Breakfast was phenomenal, we really enjoyed the steel cut oats with the house made jam, the frittata was also fabulous. The pancakes were average but the jam out them over. For lunch we had the Brussels sprouts which were amazing and had an unexpected kick, the vegetable corn soup was average but it was so cold outside the warmth was welcome. The veggie burger was pretty good as well but the kale salad was great. The only meal that did not go above average was dinner, my burger was average the fried egg did not help put it over the threshold but the garden salad was great. The salmon was the special but good. The flatbread was not my favorite I would've passed on that next time since it was nothing special. Overall we loved it and will be back - Definitely worth a try!! Update-they tried the flatbread recipe and it was much better! Thanks!!

2012 review #279: I did a wedding here so this is solely a wedding review. Also, it was 35 degrees. I was mad that the wedding was to be held outside with no backup plan. Then I arrived and found Randi the wedding planner running around. She greeted me and said "the bride just decided to do the wedding in our tent so we're scrambling to get it done. Follow me." I was impressed because I did not book this gig but she still figured out who I was. The tent they set up was basically like being outdoors but they could set up space heaters. The staff worked like crazy to set up a stage, skirt, and arrangements, as well as lighting and candles to get the place looking presentable. Randi still managed to remember our payment prior to the event starting, which is always a major plus. They has to turn off the space heaters because hey were so loud; within a few minutes the space was easily down to 40 degrees. Nonetheless I still felt the staff did the best they could with extremely short notice.

I like Yelp's explanation for two stars - it fits perfectly here. Just "Meh. I've experienced better." Five of us had dinner at the Dining Hall before seeing John Lithgow in the Auditorium last night - great location for that, by the way, seeing as how it's only about 50 feet away from the Auditorium entrance. Well, that was a good thing. The service was extremely slow. It took about 50 minutes for our entrees to arrive. We had to ask for bread several times before it arrived. Same with refills on drinks - they just never came. At one point, someone (manager, perhaps) who was not waiting on our table came over to apologize for the wait. Well, when the food finally came, we were all underwhelmed. Orders were brought out wrong, but we had so little time left there was no time to correct the situation. Some orders were already cold. When the server set down one plate (with strange looking, unwanted chicken added to an beet salad), he said "I don't know why they did that," but didn't ask if the addition was okay. Good thing she isn't a vegetarian, I guess. I got a boring old hamburger, but kind of lost my appetite when it was set in front of me (picture included). The lettuce was brown and the burger looked incredibly dry. I had also asked for fruit, not fries, but you can see what I was served. They did bring some fruit on the side (blech. Stick with the fries). To their credit, they did remove one entree from the bill and a full 20% off what remained, which we appreciated. But, based on the service and the quality of the food, I probably wouldn't go back. On the up-side, the surroundings are absolutely beautiful.

We ate breakfast on the patio. The food was quite good, but not terribly special. The service, however, was lacking. All of the servers seemed to move in slow motion, as if they were not only learning how to do their jobs but also learning how to walk, move their arms, and carry things. It was kind of weird.

My husband and I had brunch here before a hike and we were very disappointed with the service. The food has always been so-so, but we go there because it's close to hiking and I love their porch. I ordered iced tea and when the waiter sat it down, I noticed it was very pale in color. I tasted it anyway, it tasted like water with a tiny hint of tea - again, it was practically clear, maybe they accidentally brewed a batch re-using a tea bag? I politely (because I too was a waitress all through college) asked if they had some freshly brewed tea because this one tasted a little weak - and in the most rude response I've ever experienced in dining... he said that it was in fact freshly brewed tea. I'm from Texas - I know what tea should look like and taste like, and this was not tea. I asked if I could have something else. The rest of the breakfast was mediocre at best, food came out cold and portions were small. So disappointed, I'd say I'd be content with just hanging out on their porch sipping a glass of iced tea - cause their porch is lovely - and that's what Texans do, sip iced tea on the porch (half joking) - but that would be a stretch cause apparently, this dining hall does not know how to make tea. Maybe lunch and dinner offer a different experience?

I was there before an evening concert on 7/16/2012. The setting is beautiful. The food was solid, if not overwhelming. It came in a timely manner, although the dessert was a bit slow. The waiter messed up the split on the bill across two credit cards, but he apologized and fixed it right away. It's a great place to have a unhurried dinner before a show at the auditorium.

After a moring hike with friends and family in Chautaqua Park we made our way to the Chautauqua Dining Hall for lunch/brunch. There were 8 of us and they were able to seat us right away. I think out timing was good b/c it was packed when we left. This place had been recently renovated, and while new, it retained it's old school feel. The turn of the century photos mixed with the music hall concert phots were great (I wanted to buy the Bob Wier//Chris Robinson photo). The food was solid, better than a diner, but appropriate for a dining hall. Call it upscale comfort food (UCF). The wait for our meals wasn't bad and the free coffee and Chai refills were appreciated. Certainly a great finish to a nice morning in Boulder.

We had the special Valentine's Day meal before a wonderful concert at the Community house. It was very disappointing. The service was I unattentive and uninformed. Our waiter couldn't answer basic questions about the menu items. My risotto was watery and almost tasteless. My molten chocolate desert had a harsh contrast of chocolate and the cherry sauce. Altogether a disappointing event. Boulder a lots of great place to eat, don't waste your money here.

The food and service were great. The waiter was nice. I had trout, which was crispy skinned and tasted wonderful. Eating on the veranda of an old house with a cute young guy waiting on me should have been my dream. But every time someone walked out of the restroom below, the smell of air fresheners wafted through the dining area. Pee Yew!!!!! I ate fast and left. They really need to do something about that restroom. I really doubt that it needs such strong air fresheners. Maybe a fan with strategically placed duct-work and vents would do a better job.

What a wonderful evening and excellent dining experience. In addition to the fact that the restaurant itself is beautiful, the staff were warm and welcoming, our waiter was charming and professional. Despite the fact that we were a large group, our food arrived in a timely fashion and was absolutely fresh and delicious. We cant wait to visit again.

Boulderites... We take such pride in our support of local flavor and here I am sitting at chatauqua dining hall having an outstanding meal with first rate service, beautiful river rock fireplace and impeccably prepared food with few others around. Shame on you for not supporting one of the best restaurants in boulder Lived here 20+ years and think the current ownership has hit a home run! Recommend fried Brussels sprouts app, pear salad, polenta for the vegan: steak for the meat lover and root beer floats to finish the meal Promise...you will not be disappointed

Service was horrid. Sat for a good 15 mins before even getting a water. Waited a good while for the food and my girlfriend's omelet and my skillet were both screwed up. I eat out often and send my food back about three or four times a year only in the scenario where I feel I'm being robbed to pay for the food being served, this friends was one of those times. After the long wait and the corrected food, it was okay but it was way overpriced. I almost feel they should have two prices, one for the food and an additional charge if you're on the veranda because you're paying for the view and atmosphere, not what you're eating at this place.

Very nicely situated with a great view! The food is good and service nice. I would've liked to sit outside and enjoy the sights and sounds, but a booth on the inside was just fine.

Brunch here was the worst meal I've had in Boulder. We took an out of town client because we thought that this would be a great location w/their wraparound porch and views of the flatirons. The outdoor seating was pleasant, even w/out a view, but unfortunately the food was sub par. Although we each tried numerous items, I didn't find anything that I could finish. We tried to get properly cooked eggs benedict three times, including when they were made fresh, but they were all overcooked. We left plates full of food and our waiter never asked how our meal was. He obviously knew. The only good thing I can say about the entire experience is that the management were apologetic when I contacted them and offered a full refund.

Really disappointing. I grew up blocks from here and was so excited that it recently came under new ownership. I went last weekend with my mother and two best friends for brunch and it was shockingly bad. When we ordered our food, both my mother and I asked for cheese grits and the waitress said, "Yes I heard you" but when they came, there were no cheese. Also, everyone's meal came out ice cold. Even the bus boy said "yes, that sausage is freezing." We sent it back and asked for it to be heated up. The food came back and was only marginally warmer. Nothing like cold breakfast tacos in the morning... Our waitress was aloof and even if the food had been warm, it was mediocre at best. I hope they step up their game because it is a beautiful spot!!

Heartily agree with Chris B's comments. I was at the same dinner and it was the worst dining experience I've had anywhere. Will not return. We felt sorry for the server, so left him a decent tip. However, the food was so bad that even though they took some $ off the bill, they should have canceled the entire bill. Three out of 6 of us sent our food back and never got replacements. Have enjoyed eating at Chatauqua in the past, but will never go there again.

I really want this place to be so much better than it is... Key issue is lethargic, often unprofessional service. The food is fine, but does not make up for serious service issues. There are many other places to find a good dinner in Boulder.

  • Peggy P.

We wanted to try the newly remodeled dining hall. We dined inside. Salad nicoise had raw green beans, no anchovies, sparse-to-none dressing. No bread on table. Waitstaff was friendly but forgot to bring happy hour menu. Washrooms look new. Chicken liver appetizer was smeared unattractively on a board. All in all, not a winner given the extensive restaurant competition in Boulder. Oh, and flies everywhere.

    (3)
  • Max C.

The steak was good, but not good enough to justify the price. The service was ... well ... they forgot about me literally three times. They came around with wine, poured for everyone at our table but me, and walked off with the bottle. They came around and took orders, got to me, and walked away. They took dessert orders, and brought out everyone's but mine. I realize I was in an awkward chair at the corner, but three times is two times past what I'm willing to laugh off. The ambiance and decor were nice, but not nice enough to justify the prices. I would strongly recommend that If you're going to spend that much on a dinner, go to Johns and get dramatically better food. Or go to one of the trendy places on Pearl or Walnut and get the trendy ambiance. Or go to Martini's in Longmont and get both. But unless you're really not worried about a triple digit tab for your table of three and the location is convenient, I'd avoid this one.

Order the duck flat bread and CO trout. Our daughter liked her steak, although it was accompanied by only steak fries and not many. Skip the veggie burger. The apple crisp was nothing special. Good service. Great ambiance.

Ok service. The wait staff and host staff stand by the front door and loudly cackle like teenage girls. The real problem was the food. It was horrible. I can not imagine how even the most basic cook could screw up eggs so bad. The coffee was good, but that is all. Horrible food.

New management is definitely not on their A game; even though they run other local restaurants. Typical Boulder high prices, low level service and small portions. We even had to had to ask for our checks; and ended up going to the bar to pay them since they never did bring our them. We could have walked out and they would never have noticed. We have reservations again for July prior to a concert. This will be our last shot for them.

I'm in between a 3 and a 4 for this one...If I could I would say 3.5....instead I'll be generous and give them a 4. Went here before seeing Andrew Bird at the auditorium next door. Had reservations for 7pm and the concert started at 8pm. We had a good server, he could've been more attentive but I felt bad for the guy...I'm pretty sure he was covering 10 tables by himself. We ordered hummus for an appetizer. It was good but I'm more of a pita bread with hummus kinda gal and this came with mini bread pieces that were hard. I got the fish tacos with a side of baby carrots...the fish tacos were delicious, the baby carrots were terrible. They weren't hot and they weren't cold...which, those are the only ways carrots should be done...not somewhere in the middle. My husband ordered the pork chop and really liked it. It was really juicy and a thick cut. Overall, it was a nice meal before the concert and you can't beat the location! I would like to come back on a night when a concert isn't going on because then hopefully they wouldn't be short staffed and our waiter could be more attentive to us.

Great breakfast spot. Our party of 4 was seated on the porch right away, service was attentive, and food was good. Would definitely recommend

I'm rating this based on the weekend breakfast buffet, which we've done twice. The buffet has a great selection; there's also an omelet station. The pastries are yummy and there's along with the predictably Boulder-ish hipster dishes there's insteresting stuff like cheesy grits. Outdoor dining here is superb if the weather's nice. Would have gotten 5 stars if the parking weren't completely miserable.

What a disappointment!! We had reservations for five on a Saturday night, right before the Angelique Kidjo concert (6:30 PM). One person in our party was in a w/chair. They shoved us on the porch in a table for four. We ordered our food and waited. And waited. And waited. They gave us four burnt 1" x 3.5 " slices of cornbread (good thing I don't like it), and when we asked for more, they said they ran out. Our food finally arrived (tomato soup; watermelon gazpacho; salads and brussel sprouts, we had to bolt it down. I had to track down our check to pay so we could get to the concert on time. Service was terrible; kitchen was so slow. Food quality okay but small portions for the price. One person in our party was sick later on from the meal. Too bad that the kitchen is so badly run- disorganized and possibly not clean. Who runs out of cornbread in the middle of a Saturday night dinner service?. They did keep the water glasses full though. I'll give 'em that.

Went here for brunch - tasty trout, nice chicken caesar, very solid tomato soup. If you're a foodie and are expecting something super innovative, you will be disappointed. If you come expecting some very tasty, but simple food in a relaxed atmosphere with a good view, you will enjoy it.

What a magical place! We have eaten twice now at the Dining Hall since the new owners have taken over and could not be more pleased. As you walk up the front steps you are taken away to a rustic outpost very much like visiting the great lodges of the national parks. The interior remodel is fantastic. Our service from start to finish has been friendly and attentive and let's not forget about the food. I love the menu. It has a local feel yet with some extra bells and whistles. Don't miss the brussel sprouts on the app menu and I know it's just a burger, but the Hall Burger was dynamite. I am already looking forward to our next visit.

I have been to the Chautauqua Dining Hall many times over many years. It has been quite good until this year. There are many young, charming, but ill-trained waiters and mediocre food. There are apparently some things on the menu that Yelpers have liked, but nothing I have tried has been. I wanted to make sure that my first experience of the summer wasn't a fluke, but I have now eaten there four times, and it isn't. Kale salad: yellowish, bitter kale with many walnuts, some chicken, and odd bits of tiny watermelon. Trout with horseradish cream sauce: overcooked and sauce tasteless. The hanging plants look to be eating some diners alive and do not appear to have been watered lately. The sad part is that the porch is a wonderful place to eat, and the restaurant is a perfect choice before a concert at the auditorium, which is only steps away. Park once and you're done. Now we will have to start bringing a picnic lunch before concerts, movies, and other performances. I hope the restaurant group that runs many fine restaurants in Boulder will take notice and improve.

Took my 91 year old father here for lunch recently. I guess I expected the food to be as awesome as the view and building, but I was not overwhelmed. The burger was basic and the fries more basic. Service was a bit slow, but friendly. I am not sure they have enough servers. The people manning the reception area could be a bit more cordial. It is such a historic landmark with great beauty that I would expect a little better ambiance; but, one must remember it is a "dining hall". Do you remember those college dining halls or camp dining halls? Well, the food is slightly better, but not over the top.

We were excited to try out the new Chautauqua Dining Hall under new ownership and wanted to like this place. What a disappointment! The service was strained but granted it was a concert night so we can overlook that. The food was lackluster at best. The salad had wilted lettuce and the shepherds pie was terrible. I couldn't even finish it. Overcooked buffalo with a layer of mashed potatoes on top. The soup du jour was okay. The location and scenery are beautiful which is why I give it 2 stars (it'd otherwise be 1 star). For a $100 meal for 2, I expect much more! Never again.

Everything was top notch. Service was impeccable. Ambience is perfection. Food was serious. Bison shepards pie. That cauliflower with the steak. Burrata! Can't wait to go back. Happy they serve breakfast too!

Despite the beautiful location and decent food, its not worth the money. Our waiter was beyond incompetent. Food came out slow and dried up from being under the heating lamp. We were really looking forward to it, as we had not been here in over 20 years. But a big disappointment.

Super friendly staff. Great weather so we dined on the veranda. Beautiful views of the well manicured lawns. Started with their sweet corn soup. Brothier than I expected but still tasty. Had the Cornish Game Hen and Flat Iron Steak. Both were okay. Don't get the Panna Cotta. It was awful! Worse I've ever had. Hard Gelatin-like. The Chocolate Flourless cake wasn't much better.

Sunday brunch is going to set you back a bit but if you can get a seat outside it's totally worth it. The buffet is diverse and well cooked. If you have guests in town (or you're the one that's in from out of town) then this is the perfect special occasion place for you.

I have been coming to this dining hall for many years. My mom enjoys going, and I thought I'd take her this year as a belated mother's day. The staff was pleasant and seated us quickly. However, I was a bit surprised that the hostess left before my mom was seated, since she has Parkinson's. The table had been wiped, but it was sticky, like the floors of a dirty movie theater. The selection of food wasn't much to right home about either. However, it was served hot. It's a bit overpriced for what you get, but the view is nice. Also, for some reason the whole atmosphere seemed much louder that I remember. I had a hard time hearing conversation. I will probably look for something else for the next time.

Service was great. A plus plus! My husband and I came for brunch on a rainy summer Sunday. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Although the biscuits and gravy were yummy.. but couldn't eat too much due to diet restrictions. Eggs, bacon, pancakes.. all of it were standard? I give the higher rating for the experience, and the service. Our waiter removed a bloody mary off our bill since my husband barely touched it. That really made us a fan. We tipped higher obviously.. Unfortunately we came when it was raining, but if we ever venture out to Colorado again, I'd like to see how beautiful this place can be with the sun shining in full force. Old school feel with old school hospitality.

What a beautiful spot, what a terrible breakfast. Cold and not delicious. We sent back three out of four of our dishes and they still came back Luke warm at best.

There are many fine eating establishments in Boulder. This is not one of them. The park is nice, the restaurant is not. The staff is incompetent. The hostesses, the waiters, and the waitresses, at least the bus boy was kind enough to fill our water glasses with tap water and no ice. This is a place for tourists and first timers to be taken advantage of. I was a first timer, there won't be a second.

What a stunning place for outdoor dining - on the divine wraparound porch of the Dining Hall. We arrived early and were seated at a lovely table for two with views of the lawn and the foothills. A lovely rainbow came out to complete the fragrant setting. Our waiter was on the ball and offered suggestions and explained the specials. We enjoyed our wine selections at a reasonable cost and both of our fish entrees were cooked to perfection. The salads and sides were interesting and colorfully displayed. My only complaint would be the uninteresting deserts which were large in portion size but short on taste. I would recommend this for lunch or dinner when the foothills weather permits.

As frequent Colorado Music Festival concertgoers, it seemed strange that my husband and I had never dined at the Chautauqua Dining Hall. With some time to kill on Friday night before the final concert, we decided to give it a try. The Good: Looking over the menu, we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of food and the price-ranges. I ordered the Barbecued Pulled Pork sandwich ($9 - came with coleslaw and kettle chips) and my husband settled on the Chautauqua Burger ($8 - came with kettle chips, ordered med-rare). The pulled pork was deliciously seasoned, was the perfect texture, and came on a beautifully toasted bun. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. My husband was very impressed with his burger. Since moving to Colorado, he's been on the hunt for the perfect burger and Chautauqua's burger came in at or near the top. The temperature was exactly how he'd ordered it; the Colorado-raised beef was delicious and tender, and he was also impressed with the toasted bun. The Bad: The service! Our server was a nice enough guy, don't get me wrong. His timing and priorities were off though. Clearly many of diners were headed to the concert and it seemed like he tried to make sure they all made it out the door before the concert was to start. We were seated right around 6:30, figuring that we'd have plenty of time to eat and make it to the auditorium by 7:30, when the concert started. Seems pretty reasonable, no? Especially when you're a stone's throw away from your final destination. We also figured since we were ordering simple fare, the kitchen-to-table time would be short. This was not the case. Among other minor things, it took a very, very long time for our order to be taken, we had to ask at least two times for ketchup, we were not given any table bread (not that we needed it, but it was annoying to look around and see that every other table had been given bread but ours), we had to ask for our check to be brought to us which ended up taking a good 10-15 minutes... and then we had to wait for our server to return to our table for the payment. And most offensively, we were never asked how our food tasted. We finally made it out the door at 7:35. Our server was young so these things are forgivable and this experience probably won't keep us from visiting the dining hall again next CMF season. Perhaps we should have told our server from the get-go that we were trying to make it to the concert... maybe then we would have been treated as well and served as promptly as the tables around us. Verdict: Delicious food that might tempt us to revisit the dining hall. Will hope for a more experienced server next time around.

I love this dining hall, but hesitate to recommend it to foodies because the food is not the best in the world. It is a place I recommended for people who want to relax, enjoy very peaceful surroundings and the amazing beauty of Boulder. If you are only interested in food, go elsewhere because the cuisine is hit or miss. Breakfast items are more consistent than lunch or dinner, so better to go in the mornings. Especially if the weather is good and you can enjoy the nice veranda. The dining hall is more about the experience of that part of town, of the park, the movies in the fall and winter, the great concerts during the summer, and the amazing hiking. Its a nice, calm place to relax and enjoy a good breakfast after a long hike or before a great silent movie at the old barn.

Recently had lunch with a group of old friends at the Chautauqua Dining Hall. We had reservations and were seated quickly on the open air porch. Nice view of the grounds in front of the old dining hall and very pleasant. In a way, the old dining hall is reminiscent of some of the old hotels and restaurants in the national park system. Nostalgic and historical. However, where those are sometimes run by national catering services with cafeteria-like ambience, Chautauqua will exceed your expectations. Our service was accurate and timely. I had the Shrimp Roll which I knew would not be a New England style lobster roll but was in fact just as good in its own way (OK , I know the New Englanders reading this will be skeptical). Others in the group had the fish tacos which were also very fresh and flavorful. Overall we all were pleased with our meals and the experience on the porch.

Ate at the Chatauqua Dining Hall after a nice hike with my in-laws. It was pretty good! Not TOO many vegetarian options, but they do have some. My husband and I split the portobello mushroom sandwich (which we got without cheese, even though it does usually come with swiss, I think). It was just a mushroom on focaccia, which isn't bad, but was kind of boring. We also split the avocado & tomato sandwich (again, without the cheese it normally comes with) , which was also a bit boring. BUT, they were tasty, so boring isn't always bad I suppose. The view is nice & it's peaceful to sit on the patio. :) I think there are better places to eat in Boulder, but if you're starving after a hike, this place is pretty alright!

The site alone is worth visiting this place steeped in history & character! The Dining Hall is a welcoming place with, as my friend pointed out, the bead work on the ceiling showing its period. Service was great & my steak very good! Sunday dinner was relaxed with tables available; many families at play on the grounds in view of diners along with a beautiful sunset! The Maryland Crab cake was "not" from Maryland and so is not recommended by my friend. So I suppose keeping to the local fare is the best bet! Do plan to return for the breakfast in the future!

Great music, awesome food (we were there for breakfast), excellent service. Pretty typical selection for an all-you-can-eat buffet, kicked up a notch in taste and quality. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious -- even the bacon was crispy, which made me happy. Try the fresh-squeezed mango-orange juice --- I'd drink that every morning if I could. Very throwback feel to the whole experience, like jumping in a time machine and going back 75 years or so. Except the prices. Those felt distinctly modern.

Hands down, this is a must-eat for any boulderite or out-of-towner. Being boulder, the atmosphere is beautiful. Perched on a grassy hill that just puts the mountains on showcase, it has to be one of the most beautiful places to eat. It's also beautifully located right next to a trail head that leads to one of the most beautiful hikes on the map. This place totally makes you forget everything negative that people say boulder. It's a great example of what a city boulder really is.

I've only ever had dinner here, but I feel compelled to review it nonetheless. This is the favorite dining spot of my family when they visit Boulder, and with good reason. Having not eaten here in some time, I can't necessarily speak to the waitstaff... but a lack of comment in this category generally means it was efficient and friendly. No complaints, that is. The food is great. I've been to a number of the top-rated, high end, expensive restaurants in town, and the grub at Chautauqua has generally been better than them all. The fixed Valentine's Day menu was delicious, and helped to make a great impression on my date. The atmosphere, however, is what really deserves mention here. The Chautauqua Dining Hall carries with it the ambiance of the old Chautauqua Societies-- it is a piece of Americana that must be experienced by anyone who has the opportunity. Nestled in its own park, pressed against the Flatirons, Chautauqua provides unmatched views of Boulder and the geological formations that make the town so special. When it's nice out, there is simply no better place to be in the early evening than having a glass of wine and an amazing dinner on the porch at this restaurant. A Boulder institution, and an absolute MUST in town.

Killer views of Boulder and the Flatirons. Historical setting, beautiful lawns and gardens. National Registry. Sunday Brunch - Eggs, pancakes, eggs benny, french toast, oatmeal, gravy, ran out of biscuits!, bacon, sausage, smoked salmon, bagels, pasta dishes, desserts. Plenty of food, but nothing exciting. Standard fare. Better for lunch.

Have wanted to go to this restaurant for several years and had that opportunity today for brunch. To sum it up, not impressed! Although it was priced right, there was nothing special about this brunch offering. Standard scrambled eggs, omelets, pancakes, and sausage gravy, most of which was some cold. A nice selection of mini desserts were worth tasting, but here again, nothing to write home about. Large dining room, with an above average amount of noise, which was comfortable but uninviting.

Let me just start this review by getting this out of the way: the food here just isn't very good. I've come numerous times over the years, tried different things, but I've never been very impressed with my food. However, if you're going to come here, I'd definitely recommend going early for brunch. In my experience, their food gets worse as the day goes on. Their service didn't make a big impression on me either, it's been a bit of a hit or miss when I've gone. Some of the staff we've gotten are great, others are slow and not that friendly. Still, none of the service has been bad enough that it alone would prevent me from coming back. The only thing the Chautauqua Dining Hall really has going for it is the location. Still, you'd probably be better getting food from somewhere else, bring it up to Chautauqua, and having a picnic.

I stayed at the Chautauqua cottages for 5 days, and ate at the Dining Hall twice. The staff was friendly and helpful. They even directed me to other places to eat and visit. The food at the Dining Hall was good. The salads fresh, the main dishes good, if sort of lackluster. The variety is a little weak as well as the cocktails. The location really is the big draw for this place, and it is beautiful.

Last time my girlfriend and I had dinner here, we sat on the patio at one of the most beautiful locations on the planet, Chautauqua Park. You've got history. You've got great food. The mountains. And during our meal two deer wandered through the meadow outside the patio, less than 20 feet from our table. What, was this a dream sequence? No, it was the everyday experience at Chautauqua. They have an impressive selection of healthy, delicious and satisfying salads. They also have a wide variety of entrees, from venison to seafood to lamb. And whatever you order, make sure it comes with the mashers. Best part is you can eat there before or after a hike (the dining room is less than 100 yards from a trailhead), or check out a performance of the Colorado Musical Festival, which takes place in the auditorium across the lawn.

An absolutely amazing location and building that anyone competent should be able to make a smashing success. I like Three Leaf's other restaurants, and they've operated this one long enough to have worked out the kinks ... but no. Service for a weekday lunch was pretty slow. The main issue was that two people in our group got burgers: one ordered Medium came out very rare, while the one ordered Medium-Well came out hockey-puck very well.

Love the food and ambiance at Chautauqua! Beautiful outdoor dining with a view of chatauqua park. Great food. A great playground for the kids nearby. And awesome hiking at the flatirons nearby. You can even rent a cute little cabin! Parking can be rough--the lot fills up fast with park visitors and hikers, so leave enough time to park and walk from the local neighborhood. (5-10 mins)

There were 2 very good aspects to my recent dining experience at the Chautauqua Dining Hall. One was the chai...and the other was our waiter. Unfortunately, these two good things do not redeem the rest of the experience. With this new restauranteur who has taken over food service at the Chautauqua, have come many changes, some very obvious and others more difficult to perceive or understand. It is not for the public to figure those details out, anyway. What's wrong? The menu choices. The prices. The new decor. Some are matters of personal taste. Others aren't so much. The food is not very good, and is extremely overpriced for the portions and quality that one receives. That is the biggest problem. I had already heard to avoid this restaurant since the new restauranteurs took over. This advice came from people whose opinions I respect. Should have listened. Hope there can be improvement.

For a farm to table restaurant with 10 entree options, it's ridiculous that there is ONE vegetarian option that is not even good. Or fresh. Or seasonal. Farm to table does not mean greasy polenta and barely cooked mushrooms with barely enough pesto to make it flavorful. YOU HAVE A FARM THAT GROWS VEGETABLES. USE IT. I've been coming to the Dining Hall for more than 20 years with my family--it's always been such a great experience on the veranda. And I too was excited when Three Leaf took over, but they have totally failed on making this any sort of dining destination. The menu is just sad-- overpriced and uncreative. And now I'm sad that this Boulder institution is no longer worth my time and money!

Fabulous Brunch on the patio! The service is superb with great table timing and suggested items. Frittata with Chorizo was perfect, Benedict with spinach a hit with two diners. I asked for a suggestion and The Whole Cottage was a perfect choice. The Cottage ingredients sounded heavy, sautéed onions, mushrooms with bacon and fried potatoes, country gravy and two egg over. What a great choice al the ingredients were cooked to perfection and the gravy was light and flavorful. Ok now for the item shared around the table the breakfast burrito. Excellent pork green chili whit a hit of curry, we'll all be back for this favorite.

Awesome place for parties. We had my daughter's party here (50 people) and it was wonderful. The staff is professional and highly organized. I thought the food was great and came out at exactly the planned times. Their event planner, Lauren, is incredible and delivered on everything we requested. Very reasonably priced for the quality of service, location, and food.

I came here with my wife after a function in the park and we definitely enjoyed the atmosphere, the service, and the food. They had a few beers on tap that were special and/or rare and a seasonal and fresh food menu that left me wanting to come back on a regular basis to try things on. We tried the green chili flatbread which wasn't spicy and had just the right amount of toppings. We also sampled the pork which was breaded and came over a bed of rice that gave it an overall hearty meal feel to it even though the portion wasn't humongous. Overall a very good experience and I definitely plan on coming back.

There was a time when the Chautauqua Dining Hall was surrounded by people waiting for tables. Sitting, standing, milling around -- they were all waiting to hear their names called (and hoping they were lucky enough to be assigned a table on the wrap-around porch). Where did everyone go? Before today, our last visit was in August, and we got seated right away at an outdoor table, and, to tell you the truth, it would not have mattered whether the food were good or bad...the experience, the morning sun on our table, the contrast of green grass and blue sky, was enough and well worth the cost of admission. This morning, it was a bit brisk outside, so we opted for an indoor table that validated my assumption that the outdoor experience is what makes the dining hall so special. Always has and always will. I will say that my latte was pretty darn good. The breakfast was just okay for the price, but, again, it's all about the view, and the history, and the anticipation of hiking up the hill to work off the meal. I wonder if the prices were more reasonable (and not so Snoozish but without the creativity and perfection) if the dining hall couldn't attract a full house once again. Basic breakfast, cooked in mediocre style, is nothing you don't find in 9 out of 10 places around town. But more is expected here. Maybe it's time to re-define: basic breakfast at a good price or upscale breakfast at a premium price? I think either would work just fine. Not that I want to wait for a table...it would just be nice to see the energy return to this amazing Boulder landmark.

The service was very poor. I came with a group of people on a Saturday morning, so I'm sure they were busy (though we were the only ones there) and they only gave us a little sample menu to order off it, rather than the big one. I kept it simple and got scrambled eggs with bacon. The portions were small and the breakfast was nothing special for the price I paid. My friend got sausage and it was so undercooked, the waitress was not friendly about taking it back. Another friend also got her omelette very mixed up, as if the server was paying no attention to her order. Beautiful and convenient location for a morning hike but I won't be going back.

Met for dinner at 4:30 before a 8pm concert in order to secure a table on the porch. They were out of the two beers we ordered, so we ended up with weak cocktails that didn't really satisfy our thirst on the first really hot day of summer. At least they kept the water flowing thru our leisurely dinner. We started with the mushroom flatbread and charcuterie platter which provided a variety of tastes and textures and could have been enough for a light dinner..but the daily fish special sounded too good to pass by. They brought us this cake-like cornbread with a dipping apple butter that made us feel like we were eating dessert first and was quite decadent and delicious. We weren't disappointed by the sea bass in a light lemon caper butter sauce over a bed of quinoa & sautéed summer squash and left feeling quite satisfied. Service was friendly and professional and we never felt rushed as dinners increased prior to the concert. I'd definitely recommend this as a classic Boulder experience.

I had brunch here after my niece's graduation at the adjoining auditorium. The graduation finished a bit early, and the restaurant had no problem accomodating our party of 9 ahead of our reservation. The room is beautiful, light and airy. Depending on where you are seated, there are nice views out the windows. The brunch menu hits on all the breakfast and lunch faves. I had a really hard time deciding what to order! I went with the tofu scramble, solely because it came with a biscuit. The biscuit was a bit hard but the flavor was great. Also, it wasn't really a "scramble" but rather chunks of tofu cut up and sauteed with delicious roasted vegetables. Although very friendly, the service was quite sloppy, so I can't give more than 3 stars, but this place is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area

This place is decorated in a rustic style. It made me think of an old farm house. The day we went it was snowing and the view was very beautiful. My friends and I started with the homemade doughnuts. The doughnuts come with a chocolate dipping sauce, and cinnamon dipping sauce, and a lemon curd. They were fantastic! I was thrilled to see a vegetarian option for biscuits and gravy and ordered it. It was pretty good! It had all the seasoning that biscuits and gravy with meat does but didn't try to make it taste like meat. I was very pleasantly surprised. My friends enjoyed their meals as well.

Very disappointed from a brunch visit last weekend. One person in our party of five got what they ordered. The two vegetarians were given dishes with meat, with only an insincere and mostly unconcerned apology. Service was horrendous. Never asked about how the food was but had to flag one waiter to find ours. Check was also incorrect. Worst experience in Boulder and wasn't even that crowded.

I ate here for a private function a couple weeks ago. The food was pre-ordered and served buffet style. For various reasons to no fault of the dining hall, I ended up eating most of it cold after it had been out for quite a while. What I ate was good, but the food was not at its best by the time I got to so I can't comment too much on that. The staff were excellent though, very friendly and prompt. The location is amazing. The dining hall itself has a lot of character and charm and of course it is set in front of gorgeous mountain scenary. It is in a park with hiking trails up the mountains and a playground nearby. We loved it so much we came back the next day to hike and let our kids play at the playground, which was a lot of fun. I would love to go back and get the full dining experience, I'm sure it would be excellent.

Very disappointing breakfast but probably you can do whatever you want at this location and you'll still have customers. Capucchinos: straight out of a bad coffeemachine with a bad joke of goamed milk on top. Breakfast Tacos mainly some scrambled egg put onto stale tacos. The French Toast - well, we ate the fruit that came with it... So perhaps a nice place for a beer in the evening but instead of having breakfast here rather bring a pick-nick!

It's hard to think of a more delightful experience than a casual and moderate hike in the nearby Flatirons of Chautauqua Park and then rewarding yourself with brunch on the veranda of this Victorian-era institution. Food is fresh and the service is friendly. A classic Colorado experience.

My fiance and I had a fairly disappointing brunch experience at Chautauqua Dining Hall this past weekend, and wont likely return or recommend to any of our friends. We hoped to sit on the beautiful porch as we've done in the past, but it was (understandably) booked, so we decided to sit at the bar (we usually love the energy at bars, getting to talk to the bartender, usually getting great service, etc.) That was unfortunately not the case on Sunday. The first issue was that the bar was covered with flies. They were everywhere! I get that the mountains are next door, but there has to be a way to prevent this. It was just kind of gross. The second, but more important issue which will prevent us from returning, was the service. Our food took over 25 minutes, which isn't a big deal, but it was barely lukewarm when it arrived. They also forgot to bring syrup for the french toast. No apologies about either issue. And, while it seems like a simple enough request, it then took them another 10+ minutes (I'm not exaggerating) to eventually bring the syrup, at which point the meal was completely cold. We considered asking them to reheat it but, by this point, we were over it and decided to just share my meal (mediocre eggs and potatoes). Again, barely an acknowledgment or an apology. I dont know if the staff was just having a bad morning or what, but the entire time we sat at the bar, we tried to make friendly small talk with the bartender and other staff, and constantly felt like we were either bothering them or in their way. The Dining Hall has a great thing going with its location and history, I hope they can get their act together with the service and food, but until then we probably wont be back.

I should have really listened to the poor reviews. My husband and I went for our anniversary dinner b/c we thought the atmosphere would be cool- which it was. That was about it. Now keep in mind, we were about maybe 1 of 4 tables there... you think service would have been prompt. Started off ordering a PEACH WHITE WINE sangria- what came out- red wine with cherries in it. The waitress was like no, that is a peach sangria- ok? Really? We ordered chicken wings as an appetizer, it took about 20 minutes to get those, but taste like they had been sitting under a heat lamp. We ordered a salad and hush puppies... easy right? The salad came out 20 minutes later, no hush puppies still. Those finally came out and they were not cooked. SLOWEST service EVER for the amount of tables there- unacceptable. I guess I could put up with the slow service if the food was cooked and blew me away. Do NOT waste your time- such a shame too b/c they just did a huge remodel on the place. It was such a nice atmosphere, but if you can't even get the drinks right, then there is a problem.

Beautiful location, and impressive old building. We sat inside. The service was relatively good. But I thought the food was rather mediocre. I had a hamburger, and my friend a pulled pork sandwich. Ordered the burger with white cheddar but it came out with american cheese. They did take it back, but no apologies. The pork sandwich was tough. The side salad was nothing special, just a small bowl with lettuce only. We ordered ice-cream for desert. Though it was supposed to be homemade it was very very sweet, and too creamy. I will return some day, but the food should be improved.

I've visited perhaps four time now - for brunch usually. What comes to mind first is the lackluster service I've received. I've ended up there during some lull - probably weekday brunch. Twice, the server for our table didn't know they were assigned to us - hence we sit and wait with all sorts of busers, hosts and other servers buzzing around us. Seriously, the place isn't that big, why don't they know which table is theirs? Anyways, it's turning me off, since I'm already less comfortable being part of the young customer minority there already. Speaking of the environment - it was remodeled a year ago, I dunno what it looked like back then. Today it has good natural light, a nice open space inside, couches by the bar/waiting area. Moderate to loud I would expect when it's packed with people. Anyways, once you get service, it's quite good and they have plenty of staff to take care of you. The food is really fabulous - good serving sizes too - not a dumptruck of food, but rather about right to feel you're getting your money's worth and to fill you up. Once you add the biscuit/toast, you'll be full! My personal opinion on the place is that it's main value is the location. I'm not usually going to drag my visitors all the way up the hill unless we're looking for that experience. Otherwise, there are enough fun+yummy places to eat in more central part of town. I keep this place in my back pocket only for appropriate times - we climbed the 3rd flatiron the other day and it was obvious to brunch here beforehand. I'll update this review someday when I go to dinner there. Three stars because of my less than stellar personal experiences, otherwise I'd give it four.
