As a rule I visit restaurants/ coffee shops / Bars 4-5 times before I YELP any reviews on a place. The counter service needs an overhaul first or it won't continue to draw a strong and consistent crowd. It's located on the back side of the mall on the south end of Boulder. My biggest suggestion is for them to close for two days and clean / scrub the entire place clean. It's extremely dirty and the staff doesn't clean as they go ! YIKES ! Best regards, John

3 different perspectives. Short few word review from each: classy, tranquil and mature. Coffee ok not the best Americano ever but not bad either. Jazz night was a quiet laid back scene. I'll be back.
(3)Peter O.
Not only coffee in the morning, but live music and food/drinks in the evening (at least on Saturdays)! What a delightful place. We are currently enjoying some chai tea while listening to light jazz on a cold and snowy evening.

I went to Caffe Sole this morning. I ordered an extra hot non fat cafe au lait. Not that hard to make. It was average at best. It was definitely not hot, lukewarm to be exact. The barista was incredibly unfriendly. Actually rude. I was there at about 9:30 a.m. so I advise the management to have a talk with the rude man working this morning. Their pastries are dry and stale and have been every time I've gone there. I like supporting local businesses instead of chains like Starbucks. In this case I'll stick with Starbucks.

Whoa! Not at all what I expected. I used to stop here fairly often for a cuppa caffeine and a yummy pastry but now I have to re-think Caffe Sole' as an upscale bistro with a lot of Farm-to-Table items on a new menu. I came in to see a friend play and to grab a latte and maybe a scone? Instead I ordered a charcuterie and cheese plate app with a roasted three bean app too. I picked the Spanish chorizo as the salumi and had the chef select the cheese. Tasty, but miniscule portions. The three bean app arrived shortly there after and it looked great but... wow was it salty and I oversalt everything! So this was a first for me, I sent it back. The waiter apologized and came back and said the chef apologized and would cook me another right away which he did. It was as tasty as it looked. I finished and was waiting for my check that did not come but in all fairness, they were fairly busy. I walked up to the register and a different server again apologized about the saltiness of the dish and said that they took it off the check! I really appreciate that they not only corrected the dish but did not charge me for it either. Thanks! I will be back to sample more of the menu now knowing that one of my favorite coffee shops has now become both a coffee shop and a deluxe little restaurant with great live music as well.

The food was a pleasant surprise. I expected something nice and got something downright extraordinary. I absolutely love the fresh ingredients and rich flavors. This is just really good food. It may not be NOMA, but one can still see and appreciate the care that goes into each dish. The salad was beautiful with herbs and greens in a light buttermilk dressing. If you could take the best spring day ever and translate that into a taste, this would be it. The polenta dish was outstanding. The polenta had a beautiful crisp and crunchy outer layer, and the delicious cheese-spinach filling topped with a tomato-based sauce were perfect accompaniments. I highly recommend the food here. The atmosphere is nice and the service was very good. The people who work here are usually very friendly too. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience and well worth the money spent, which was far less than I've spent on some extravagant meals that were not nearly as satisfying or flavorful in downtown Boulder. I realize that I'm omitting any deep thoughts about the coffee, but it's because I was far more into the food.

A great place to hang out, grab a coffee, they have amazing pies and food and great music every week with no cover!!
(5)Jess P.
Aw, good place. Strong coffee. Good food. Great atmosphere. It's a SoBo gem.
(4)Jessica B.
I have only had coffee, however the coffee and the staff, as well as the atmosphere, are great. I have never seen any employee act rudely either.
(5)Jennifer M.
Pretty neat little coffee shop with a large outdoor seating area. The inside seemed kind of bland and lacking in ambiance, but the fact that I can sit outside with my dog with I drink my coffee makes up for the inside. Good service, but kind of run of the mill coffee. The chai isn't too shabby.

I go here every winter weekend at 5am on my way to ski. The service is friendly, the lattes are great. But the other day I stopped in for a cup of coffee. Plain, simple. A great way to judge a coffee shop, right? It was totally undrinkable! Bitter, gross, burned tasting. I could feel it giving me an ulcer as I forced down a couple sips. After that I couldn't bear it any more. I threw it out. Again, great service, yummy specialty drinks. But I was really disappointed that the most pure form of coffee that they serve (drip coffee) sucked so bad...
(3)Carllee C.
So I'm not going to lie until I discovered my new favorite cafe, Great Awakening, this was the place to beat. The baristas are always friendly and 99.99% of the time you are going to get an awesome latte. Its a large space with free internet which makes it great for studying, and often they have live bands that play in the evenings. The best part about Sole? They close at like 11pm and are open 365 days a year. The worst? The location. Its tucked away in the back of the Table Mesa shopping center (which is nowhere near anywhere I ever go in town). But even though its out of the way, Sole has atomsphere and coffee that can't be beat.
(5)Ila Z.
The coffee and chai are good, but the staff is not friendly or helpful. The place also smells a bit and is not very clean. The location is great, so I may come here once in a while, but two unpleasant experiences (lacking customer service attitude by the staff) and the smell will make this a last choice coffee shop for me.
(2)Jordan A.
Some of the best coffee ever, though probably not my favorite location. It's one of the ugliest patios in Boulder. I did love their old locations in Superior and Westminster, but those are no more.
(4)Charlie Bolognese Z.
Good place to sit and work. Lots of space, good seating, reliable wifi. They serve a fancy chai which is still a little too sweet for my tastes, but better than what's out there.
(4)Dr. J.
Okay, they're not as bad as my first review. It's an okay spot to hang out, but the coffee is still pretty bad. I don't normally go to Starbucks, but I do go to the one inside King Soopers rather than drink the coffee from here.
(3)Kate Marie G.
Great tea! But very bland decor and atmosphere, and the seating isn't very comfortable. I don't like going here much.
(2)Rachel M.
For all the people Caffe Sole draws, it's not really a great coffee shop. The coffee and tea are okay, but the aesthetics are awful. The umber and sherbet palette on the walls makes me want to vomit. I definitely wouldn't want to spend a few hours working on my lap top on their too-small wooden chairs at their too-small wooden tables crouched next to a trustafarian who hasn't showered in two weeks and has nothing better to do with his time than drink a soy latte and philosophize on Nietzche. But I digress. Bad layout. Okay coffee. I'm headed elsewhere.
(2)Seth G.
Im not sure how a cafe with a self-serve coffee dispenser can still be slow but Caffe Sole seems to perfect the art of slow service. I've seen Vic's handle twice the amount of people in 1/2 the amount of time. The coffee isn't bad but its not worth the wait.
(2)M S.
Seating and coffee are both fine here, but the WiFi has serious problems. I haven't been able to connect at all recently (in the last couple of weeks) using my Mac, and no one working there seems to know what is going on. All the other customers I've spoken to have similar problems. I need WiFi to work, so unfortunately I probably won't be returning.

Being a North Boulderite, my visits to this part of town are few and far between, even though no distance within Boulder is really very far. They've redone the floorplan in the main room where the serving counter is. That has improved the place greatly. Unfortunately the drinks were not too good, and the acoustics are still echo-y and we were trying to do a work-oriented get together. The room on the north side of the cafe was full of one-per-table customers on their laptops. The other room was actually fairly full of the same thing, until we came in and began our small meeting involving people actually talking to one another. Then a few of the folks with the laptops looked annoyed and got up and moved to the other room. Good thing they have 2 rooms plus the nice shady outdoor tables with a view of the foothills! It's a popular place, and will no doubt remain popular. So clearly they're doing something right!

Good things: - Nice outdoor seating. - Usually pretty quiet in the mornings before 10am. - Convient if you live in S. Bldr. - Good Breggos and breakfast burittos. Bad things: - Coffee isnt very good - The pastries are below average. - After 10 am the parking lot is full. - The people who frequent here are loud/annoying when you are trying to have a nice quiet morning.
(3)Heather C.
Coffee and chai are good but the staff is so miserably rude. I go there often but would rather go to Starbucks just to be treated pleasantly.
(1)Leslie A.
I just had some of the most insulting service I have ever had anywhere at Caffe Sole. I inquired about the status take-out sandwich in a perfectly nice way and was told that "this isn't MacDonalds" in a very degrading tone and then was given a sarcastic "have a nice day" when I was handed the sandwich. When I called and asked for the manager to complain, I was first asked why I wanted to speak to him and then told that he wasn't there. All the good coffee in the world can't make up for bad service.
(1)Nick H.
I have had several good experiences over the past few months when visiting this cafe. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is mellow. It's a bit outside of my typical element, and the clientele this place attracts is a bit different, but it is a satisfying environment to hang out for coffee/beer/tapas. Live music, wifi and terrific people watching from the patio are some of features of this business. Check out their menu online to get a feel of what you're getting into. It is a true cafe, with light eats and rich flavors, good coffee and and quality beers and wine. Shout out to Dan and the rest of the crew at cafe sole for keeping south boulder caffeinated. I couldn't imagine how agro boulder people would be without their morning cup of coffee, or their afternoon beer.
(5)Dave M.
Best coffee shop in South Boulder - hands down. I also just had the best breakfast / biscuit sandwich I've ever eaten. So perfect. Been here many times and will return.
(5)Leanne G.
This cafe is way more than a cafe its the heart of the SoBo community! They host lots of live music throughout each week in the evenings - which is why they also have a liquor license. One thing to try in the summer is their iced coffee. They brew it cold so that its extra brisk and fresh on a hot day.
(4)Ryan M.
My favorite coffee shop in South Boulder. Lots of seating, great coffee - nothing to complain about. One bad experience: when some guy and his date pulled the cover off the piano and filled the cafe with the noise of mediocre piano-playing for 30+ minutes. I go to coffeeshops during the day to read and work, not to hear awful, loud, unscheduled and unsolicited (I presume) live music. But this has only happened on one visit, thankfully.
(5)Janis W.
The food was fantastic! The service excellent and wonderful jazz to boot. I love the warm, cozy atmosphere... a real Bouder treasure.
(5)Brenda A.
This is by far one of my favorite spots in boulder. I love the cafe, I love the restaurant, I love the bar, I love the patio, I love the food and I absolutely LOVE the people. Everything I like about a relaxed atmosphere and an attentive staff. The music. I highly recommend it.
(5)Chelsea R.
The staff is rude, the coffee is sub-par and so are the pastries. Both times I've visited there is always a huge wait, even though there has only been three people in line. The baristas are just incredibly slow moving.
(1)Bry Z.
This is my favorite coffee shop in Boulder.
(5)Jared R.
I have been to Caffe Sole many times over the past five years, and every time I leave disappointed, disgusted, or disrespected. Being the only coffee shop near my job (aside from Starbucks), I try to always give it another chance. Today's experience left me unable to ignore it. The employees at this cafe are, and almost always have been, despicable. They always seem to be miserable and grumpy, and lack any sort of politeness or welcoming attitude that makes other places a joy to visit. Several times I've approached the counter only to be started at by the hippie/hipster employee behind the counter, waiting for me to make a move. Call me crazy, but as a customer I expect a "hello" or a "how may I help you", rather than a depressing gaze. Today, I went in to pick up a sandwich to go. The blonde girl at the counter, who was sneezing and coughing all over the place, took my order. I had a coupon given to me by my employer for 50% off a sandwich, which I decided to use today. It is worth saying that I always treat service industry employees with respect (i.e. tips) when it is deserved and/or when I am dining IN somewhere. After waiting nearly 20 minutes for my to go order, (during which I heard the other pleasant, bandana'd employee ask the girl 'did he tip?') I went to retrieve my sandwich from the counter, at which point the disgustingly rude "barista" said to me: "NEXT TIME, YOU CAN GIVE THE KITCHEN A TIP. I DID GIVE YOU 50% OFF!" You did not give me shit. Except one of the rudest experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. I responded with "Thanks for the advice" and left, embarrassed and frustrated. If any part of my experience was pleasant, I might've been inclined to leave a tip. But given the emptiness of their tip jar, I cannot imagine I'm the first person to not see that as worthy. Next time, young lady, I will not be leaving a tip. I will be taking my business elsewhere. Final notes: the restrooms are filthy, the floors dirty throughout, and the food and beverages mediocre (despite being from a great local roaster).

Went there on a Monday at 615pm... It was closed?? No sign, no reason. I saw 4 other people try to get in after me. Tried to call, voicemail was full. Hmmmm, maybe they went out of business. Gotta find another spot for evening homework :)
(1)Carole G.
My very favorite coffee shop!! Also their house chai is the BEST! They are fast, friendly, and have never messed up an order for me. I have all my business one-on-one meetings here. It's also a great place to sit and get some work done; they have free wifi, there are always tons of people on their computers there, and they have lots of outlets to plug in your laptop.
(5)Marybeth B.
Great food. Too cool for school attitude by the staff, 99% of the time. Very little eye contact and an effort to rush you through.
(3)Salome M.
I really wanted to like this place. I've been here multiple times. Every single time has been a disappointment in some way. I find it extremely overpriced for what you receive, my orders have often come out wrong, and holy cheeses...the service is terrrrrrrrrrible. I would consider going back here despite past screw ups because I like to support local businesses. However, i will not go back because every time I go in I am met with hostility at the counter. I'm sorry but if you hate everyone and can't force some semblance of a smile--you should probably NOT be in the service industry.

South Boulder doesn't seem to have the cafes with character as far as I can tell so far... Solé has a nice big space and is located at a central intersection, which makes it a good destination. I have been drinking americanos and have been satisfied (not blown away, but that doesn't happen often). The seem to have a wine bar there, but I don't normally see people drinking - probably that's an evening thing, which I haven't seen yet. The experience there isn't anything to brag about - tables around the edges, some tables in the middle if you want to uncomfortable but be seen. You're probably on your computer though, and if you're like me, your endurance is limited and there's no power at those "look at me" seats. Straight to the bottom line - you'll find me here when I just need somewhere convenient to go. If I'm looking for an experience, I'm headed downtown I guess. Ride your bike - it's a pleasant roll into downtown...
(3)Renu D.
It is a great place to go with your book or laptop, order a chai or coffee and sit back and relax. It is also a good place to conduct an informal meeting or sorts, with your book club or soccer club or any other club. I can't say I am impressed with the coffee or the chai. They are ok. But it is their friendliness that makes me come back ..and the fact that I can sit for hours with my laptop and yelp about stuff :D
(3)Avina M.
I'm so glad I risked a return visit. I had heard nothing of the remarkable turnaround that another reviewer mentioned and so was delightedly gobsmacked to see the transformation. The staff are friendly and helpful and the baked goods house-made and beautiful. No more shrink wrap! I can't speak to the jazz and tapas developments, as I'm a morning visitor, but I am now delighted to call Sole my down the street cafe. The only reason I'm not offering 5 stars is that this place is still afflicted with ill mannered pubescent customers (OK, this isn't something the staff can help) and could use an interior updating and improved furnishings.
(4)Henry H.
Coffee is fairly decent. I once ordered the mint steamer with whipped cream, and it was YUMMY and beautifully presented. Some of the staff are more social than others. Wifi works well. It can get pretty crowded and you see lots of friendly regulars. My old 5th grade teacher goes there a lot. Sometimes the tables are dirty though, but it's not too big a deal. I love the artwork they display on their walls.
(4)John T.
A pretentious mac fest, but good beer, music and food. Definitely the best cafe in Boulder.
(5)Christy V.
Lots of seating, mellow vibe, friendly counter staff and quick service. I wish they had more food options...maybe I arrive too late in the mornings, but I often find the pickings a little slim. Cafe au laits are tasty, though, and I like the atmosphere. Lots of regulars, mountain views out front.
(4)Jen C.
Good food and coffee. Kitchen guy who brings the food out is friendly, but counter help can be a little rude. People sit forever so hard to find a table sometimes.
(3)Alice K.
One of my favorites in Boulder. I love that they serve beer *and* coffee.. so, you know, you can caffeinate yourself and then get drunk. No judgments here. I went last weekend, not only because I love Caffe Sole, but also because it's a Boulder Passport venue - buy one, get one free. I love sitting outside, over-caffeinating myself or imbibing in the local draft of the day. The view of the flatirons is pretty great and it's a place where you're just damned glad you're alive. A shout out to the nice barista who helped me out... even though he made fun of me for being super tired at 9pm. :) (I'm getting old, folks.) But, thanks, Chris!
(5)Amber R.
Independent coffee shop with the coolest staff. They know what they're talking about, can make recommendations, and are so nice to boot. The space is giant so you can be anti-social or as friendly as you like. They have the standard coffee drinks, homemade chai, a nice range of tea, brunch food, baked goods, AND alcohol. I'm sold.
(5)Cmg G.
I came by this place, to recover from an earlier horrible dinner and mighty this was a saviour...especially with some awesome jazz music to windup the day. Nice place, enjoyed the music.
(5)Veronique C.
This review is for the live music night. I gave 4 stars for breakfast in a previous review. This is a small spot, unpretentious where you can spend a nice evening listening to live music while enjoying some surprisingly good food at a very reasonable price. Caffe Sole has a nice selection of wines and beer on tap. Our waiter was very friendly, ready to offer us tastes of the beers on tap. We started with the goat cheese stuffed jalapenos, very good and homemade (like everything else on the menu I assume). My husband had the gnocchi bologna which was delicious, I had the polenta, a little less of a success but still very tasty. We ended with a chocolate mousse and a raspberry tart, both very good (especially the warm tart), and big enough to share. This was a very pleasant way of spending the evening, nice atmosphere, good food and wine, and great music. We'll go back for sure!
(5)Katy D.
The service at this place is atrocious. I went to the counter to order my drink, an iced macchiato with caramel, at which point the snotty barista with long hair with pastel streaks, buts in and loudly says, "um, I can make you that Starbucks drink, but it's a vanilla latte with caramel," in the most condescending voice she can muster. I just looked at her surprised for this unprovoked rudeness, and told her just the caramel with shots on top please. She makes the drink and makes it hot, which was not what I asked for. Ordinarily I might let it go and just drink it, but because she knows soooo much about coffee, I decided to ask her to make the drink I actually ordered. She then starts arguing with me about how what I'm really asking for is two plain shots of espresso with caramel over ice. I carefully explain that I would like milk, caramel, with the shots on the top over ice, aka a macchiato with caramel iced. So she pours espresso shots over ice, puts in about a tablespoon of milk, squirts some caramel on top and wordlessly pushes my cut across the counter at me. I would never go here, unless being insulted by surly hipster baristas is your thing. Do yourself a favor and drive literally anywhere else, even Starbucks for crying out loud, and don't waste your money at the rudest coffee shop in Boulder.
(1)MaryBeth R.
Cafe Sole is so much more than coffee! My hubby and I LOVE the transformation this little shop has undergone in the last few years...from coffee shop to breakfast and lunch joint, to jazz bar, to REALLY FINE BISTRO DINING, all under one unassuming roof. I also commend the owners for making it happen on their own time scale...they seem to have a sense for when the neighborhood is ready for the next step....and then jump! Now...about that fine dining. I'm really not kidding! I eat out quite a bit, and have had at least one of my top 15 dinners at Cafe Sole. Creatively and thoughtfully prepared food without pretension. A loca-vore flair. Delicious flavors, an in-tune wait and bar staff, reasonably priced wine list. And it's in South Boulder. What's not to like??
(5)Mo D.
I am not a real fan of planet Boulder but when the urge for an eclectic fix comes on this isn't a bad place to land your rocket to hang with the aliens. The food is farm to table. Very small portions but awesome taste if you have a taste for organic and interesting food. Nice beer, wine, and coffee selection. Sadly, tonight is the last night of open stage blues and jazz. I've been coming regularly and really enjoying the exceptional talent. I am going to miss the one arm bass player and amazing vocalists that come through the door, step up to mic and proceed to blow your mind After my music fix and contact high I will return to my spaceship and return to normalcy. If you are in the area it's worth the stop and if you love watching people (aliens) it a must see on music nights.
(3)trolley S.
2 stars because they have the best chocolate croissants and decent coffee. They obviously don't make them there but the bakery they get them from knows what they're doing. Otherwise, this place would get no stars! Yes none! The service here is hot and cold. You order at the counter but sometimes they're just busy chatting up a storm that they forget they're working and you're just left standing there. And I believe this is the owner, not just a worker. If they don't want want people running to corporate chains, they need to step up to the plate and offer decent counter service. I do want to like this place as it's close to my house but as it stands right now, it's not possible.
(2)Hannah W.
Servers were not rude, but certainly not friendly or conversational. The cappuccino was bitter (I think the espresso was over-tamped) Finally, they decided to close for some reason at 6 o'clock, which was a surprise to everyone there. Again, not quite rude, but they certainly didn't seem happy to have customers...
