Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

As always Lupita's satisfies. Friday nights with great food and live music are a terrific east to end the week and start the weekend. The only downside is I never have room for dessert.

Yes, this place is charming and hole-in-the-wally but falls short in the good Mexican food department. Bland red salsa. Bland green chili. Bland food. Good sized portions and great live music. They'll charge you for the second order of chips and tasteless red paste. Why? There are much better places in the area, real Mexican joints. I assume this type of "Mexican" food would fly in the Midwestern U.S. I tried this place because of the reviews. People mention great food and attentive waitstaff. There must be two Lupita's in Aurora.

I'd have to say, this place is not bad! I wasn't expecting much from it, but the restaurant offers a lot of different menu options as well as combination options for when you can't make up your mind. I opted for a combo plate (of course) that came with a chicken enchilada, tamale, chili relleno, beef taco and rice with a side of green chili. The green chili was pretty good, as was the enchilada and the tamale. The chili relleno was the star of my place. Hilariously enough, the best part about it was that it wasn't battered traditionally, but it was wrapped in an egg roll wrapper instead. It was super crispy on the outside and the cheesy filling on the inside was perfectly melted and delicious. The only sad part of my entree was the beef taco. It was very reminiscent of the type of tacos you can buy at Taco Bell. I also got a chance to try some of the guacamole from my brother's plate and it was GOOD. I would come back here for just the rellenos and guac. Service wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. I'd say pretty average. The staff was nice, but not as attentive as I would have expected considering how empty the restaurant was. Definitely a recommendable place if you're looking for a sit down Mexican restaurant.

Wow, I was super disappointed with everything. I gave a one star, but if zero stars was an option that is what I would give this place. Somehow, this place got a 4.1 which fooled me into going. First disappointment was the service was extremely slow!! Lupita's customer service sucked!! She was very argumentative when we asked for a soft taco after receiving a hard shell taco and not only that she got some of our order wrong!! The food was not authentic tasting, it taste like processed food. Those of you that know how authentic food taste know the difference. While waiting for our food, we noticed the dirty salt shaker that looked like bugs were drowning in there and the cleanliness of the restaurant looked questionable. I would NOT recommend this place at all. I don't normally rate places, but I thought I'd be doing someone a favor by not recommending this place. Do us a favor Lupita and retire that aweful mexican food!!

I don't often have money to go out to eat with family or friends, but when I do, Lupitas is at the top of my list for places to go and it is always a treat! Betty the owner always comes around to every table and thanks everyone for choosing her restaurant which I feel is a very warm and welcoming touch and most owners of businesses just sit back and relish their earnings. Not Betty, she works along side her employees to make sure her patrons are well taken care of. The place needs a little work but it's because she doesn't want to raise the prices of her food to cover the cost of fixing seats, she'd rather make do with what she has and try and ensure a wholesome environment for her customers. I love eating at Lupitas as do new people I introduce to her establishment and their food is always on point ^_^. Thanks Lupitas for adding some wonderful color to otherwise dim colfax.

This place is definitely a gem in the neighborhood.... I met an old friend here, and the wait staff was very attentive. They had a large selection of house cocktails which made this girl happy. Not my normal style of Mexican food, but very good :). Lastly, the prices were very affordable... Would definitely go back :)

I checked out Lupita's after hearing about it from colleagues at the Anschutz Medical Campus. This is a classic Colfax Ave. dive! When you walk in be prepared to go back into the 1970s. It's like you seriously stepped into a wormhole. The food is what I'm learning is 'Denver Mexican' where everything is smothered in cheese. It's cheap and the proportions are plentiful. The beef was incredibly moist and the flavor profiles are pretty straight-forward. Heavy--cheesy and greasy. Refills are not free and you do not get free chips and salsa refills either. If you want a hefty portion for a good price Lupita's is worth a look, but it's far from being a top Mexican restaurant in any regard.

The food was good but the service wasn't so hot. I got the feeling if you weren't a regular you got sub par service. We waited nearly 30 min for the 1 complimentary basket of chips and salsa (which I had to ask for). I watch 4 other tables around me receive theirs immediately after being seated. We felt largely ignored by staff; that being said -- the food was delicious.
(3)Kayla R.
Worst service food and experience all together!!! We sat down at 930. Got our drinks and menus 30minutes later .. Waited another 30mins for water refill... The food was dry and gross seriously way better Mexican restaurants on Colfax... When we mentioned it the owners response was no its not why you give me problems. Seriously it was just feedback I'll pay for my meal just saying. . . after paying with my credit card we get chased down cuz she doesn't like my signature and now wants an I'd. I understand wanting to see my ID but you should've originally asked for it. Plus my signature is my signature 90% of peoples isn't legible. Ridiculously rude horrible food and terrible experience.save yourself the headache and go somewhere else
(1)M D.
Too expensive for the food. $12-$13 for a plate of food? I could have went to a better restaurant and had much better food
(2)Sylvia D.
The best margaritas in town!! Great service. The owner always comes to the table to say hello.
(5)Carrie T.
They charge for refills on chips and salsa but the salsa tastes more like watered down spaghetti sauce so no worries on wanting more. My tamales were dry yet the filling was greasy rice and beans were bland and tasted like they had been sitting on the stove for a week. Taco Bell has better beans and I won't feed them to my dog!! There are far better Mexican places all around dont know how this place stays open.

I've only been to this place 2X. The first time I had no issue.. This time however I do have to critique the service I recieved. When ordering I specified that I did not want ONIONS with my food.. Well that's exactly I what I got.. I did mention this to the waitress and all I got was "I hope theres not too many." The owner I'm assuming came and told me that most of her food has "garlicky onions." Well that's what she should've said in the first place. I got the green chili burrito.. It wasn't too bad but the onions were a little too much. Knowing what she told me I could've reconsidered my order. Anyways... I asked for my check so I could leave and it took a while for them to bring it to me. Once I got it I waited a little too long for them to come around to pick up the payment. So I took matters in my own hands and walked to the register and made payment. Other people are right service is slow when you are not a "regular." I will def reconsider my food choices when I return to Colorado!
(3)Trisha D.
Not sure what to think of this place. The service was excellent, but everthing else was a little iffy. The decor was out of the 70's, and the tables and booths need an update. The chips were good, but the salsa was awful. I ordered the chimichanga and my friend had the mexican hamburger. We followed that up with sopapillas. The entrees were okay, not the best, but not the worst. Dessert was served warm, but a little greasy. Prices were reasonable, and portions were good sized. Was up with a sour stomach most of the night so I won't vouch for the overall food quality. Would I go back. Maybe but for breakfast.
(3)Gayle C.
Ate the menudo with oxtail. Excellent. Also had the white sangria, refreshing and perfectly prepared. Would definitely return.

Lupita's is my go-to sit down Mexican food restaurant in this part of town. Excellent Mexican street food joints and Taquerias are a dime a dozen around here, but if you want a delicious smothered burrito or cheesy enchilada's with a basket of chips and salsa and a salty Margarita then Lupita's is the place to go. The owner Betty is always around and always checks on you in a friendly and never annoying way. Service is ALWAYS good. The food is consistently good Colorado style mexican food. I've eaten here about once a month over the last 5 years that I've been living in this neighborhood and I have never had a bad experience.
(4)Josette S.
The salsa was more like spaghetti sauce and green chili he no flavor and watery. The worst tamale I've had
(1)Cora R.
The worst kind of dumbed down Mexican food. Rellenos are not made with egg roll wraps. Enchiladas shouldn't be made with white flour tortillas. Bland sauce. Just all around not worth it.
(1)Eric S.
"Happy"! The little tune rolls in my head as I enjoy Lupita's Skillet for breakfast. Our server noted that all menu items were available upon our 0700 arrival--tasty accommodation for hospital and construction workers. Great vibe, the family supports many charities and arts. Parking would accommodate trucks. Me? Now I'm having homemade flan w breakfast. More "Happy"!
(4)Betty J.
I loved my visit here. It was so funny!!! They had a cute live band of some people who were "past their prime" and they were very entertaining and fun. The food is pretty straightforward. Nothing crazy or unique, just good Mexican food. The only reason why I only give 4 stars is because one time it took 30 minutes to get the check and another 30 to run my card. They had received a big order to go, so they were busy, but dang! Next time I'll bring cash.
(4)Karena C.
Cordial family environment, family owned and operated, authentic Mexican and South American food, great prices, good service. What's not to love? Live music Friday nights. Needs a little more spice in the green chili -- but for mainstream folks, it's probably about right. Flan is great!

One Friday night, my girlfriend and I were hoping to try a new restaurant nearby. We were in the mood for Tex/Mex and eventually found Lupita's. Boy, were we excited to discover that Lupita's has Friday night live country music every week! The festive atmosphere on Friday nights is really fun, with a mix of (mostly) older and (some) younger folks. On Live Country Music Friday, everyone has a smile on their face. The night we went, there was a good country band playing, and we got up to country line dance a few times. The open mic sessions were a hoot. The food itself was a bit bland--I would say average Tex/Mex. The service was fantastic. Our waitress was very attentive, friendly, and offered advice when ordering. The margaritas were pretty cheap and OK. All in all, I would highly recommend going to Lupita's for Country Music Friday. Soak in a unique and awesome dinner atmosphere and enjoy some decent Tex/Mex.

I really like this place. Food and drinks were delicious and the service was fantastic. I met Betty the owner and I have to say she is why the service is fantastic. I will return.

I've been eying up Lupita's for months now. So with my new found sense of culinary adventure, I decided to hit up Lupita's for a quiet solo sit down lunch. I first opened the door to the kitchen, since there wasn't any sign saying otherwise, but quickly orientated myself to the front, main entrance. I was immediately greeted and not heckled for my mistake, but quickly sat down and served some chips and salsa. I was also sat right near the entrance, perhaps to display that a little white girl was eating here on her own? I don't know, but I would've preferred a table not so in your face. However, it was quiet enough that it really didn't bother me or take away from my pleasant experience. I decided upon the Beef Plate: beef taco, beef burrito, and beef enchilada. Figuring I'd have about 10 minutes to wait, I cracked open a book to kill some time. Oh no, the Lupita's staff was back with my dish before I could finish three paragraphs. Good? Bad? I'm not sure, but each item on the Beef Plate was tasty. I could've used a little more kick of spiciness, but I'll take it. Aside from the eventual glare down from another patron (I think she was irritated that I didn't have a male companion with me!), Lupita's is a great mom and pop restaurant to check out if you're over by the AMC, Anschutz Medical Campus. Fast and friendly wait staff. Tasty food at a good price. I'll certainly be back for another go.

Was lured here on a recent Friday night by a co-worker who goes just about every Friday to here the live music by Rudy Grant and the Buffalo Riders. The odd mix between the food, decor and music kind of makes it endearing! I ordered a margarita (run-of-the-mill) as well as the stuffed sopapilla which was really good! Had taco meat and cheese in it and lettuce, tomato and rice on the side. The sweetness of the sopapilla combined with the saltiness of the meat made it really good! I would recommend it. The other members of my group ordered combo platters which they cleared their plates of so I'm guessing they liked theirs as well! At one point Rudy from the band called us up on stage so be forewarned! If it's your first time there and you're sitting close to the front he might do that (or was it just us!?) Either way, good mexican joint in an "interesting" part of Colfax :)
(4)Cristino G.
Lupita's is always consistent and fresh. It is a shame that they do not have a line out the door. Not to mention the owner Betty is always helpful in suggesting something new on the menu! Thank you Lupita's.

Been coming here for years since I worked in the area over 10 years ago. Don't get here as often as I'd like, but the food is always fantastic and Betty and the staff are always friendly and very helpful. I've loved everything I've ever had. Doesn't get too much better in Colorado than this.
(5)Brian S.
I was impressed with this place. Ordered delivery on a very snowy day to a hotel. The owner herself went out of her way to bring us our food. Food was very good and I was surprised at the presentation in a to go container. Overall the food was very tasty I was pleased.

So after living in the neighborhood for a year and eating at every taqueria In North Aurora I decided to give Lupita's a shot. Especially after reading these solid reviews. Lets just say this isn't authentic anything. From the decor to the food its a mismatched heap. Peruvian/Xmas decor and horrible Mexican food. Now being Mexican and from So Cal I am accustomed to great Mexican food and Lupitas falls short...way short. I ordered a bowl of Menudo to start and Tamales for my entree. I've had better Tamales from street vendors and what kills me or what literally could of killed me was my spoiled bowl of menudo with the strong after taste of iron and way to much fat in the broth. Yea stomach problems all night! No Bueno! Oh and dont get me started on the tamales which were dry and puny covered in tasteless red chili! Come on now people. I am no food snob and love a good hole in the wall when its actually good, but i cannot say that for Lupitas. At least my beer was cold! Lupita's Lets offer something better to the public, I know you can do it.

I travel on Colfax between Colorado Blvd and Tower on a very regular basis as my horses live out east. After spending hours, brushing, caring, and riding horses, I am usually famished. And quite often on the way home I stop at Lupita's. I like sitting down and having a basket of hot chips and a negro modelo put in front of me without really asking and I like the owner to come over and say hi, how are the horses. Betty Ortiz, the owner of Lupita's, has become a community favorite. She treats everyone like family and gives back to the community. She serves good food, and if you don't believe me, drive by during any meal time and see the number of cars around the building including Cadillacs, police, F150 trucks, and small beat up sedans. I love the souffle style chili rellanos if I am going to have a meal otherwise I order a fish taco. On the weekend you can get a good Caldo de Mars (Soup of the Sea) along with oysters on the half shell. I have not been and will review later but on the first and third Friday of the month she has a dinner show usually featuring what I call western/Tejano music. The only reason I give Betty 4 stars is I am not in love with the salsa, I like it but it has been tamed down a bit to accommodate all tastes. However, I should give it back as she lets me in smelling of horses and barns, I truly appreciate that.

I visited Lupita's for the first time today. My husband, a friend and I stopped for lunch. I was struck by the kitschy decor and we commented on the Christmas lights, bows and greenery that were obviously left up year round. As other reviewers mentioned, the place is in need of some serious updating and TLC. Although worn, it's kept clean. We each ordered an entree off the menu. I got the tamales, hubby got the pollo poblano, and our pal got the sante fe burrito. No complaints from any of us, and our plates were clean by the end of lunch. Our only disappointment was that the menu advertised a Tres Leches cake for dessert, but our server said that it wasn't available. Moreover, it hadn't been available for a while. Why get our hopes up and keep it on the menu? Oh well. We had to settle for a sopapilla each for dessert. The crispy, warm, cinnamony goodness ALMOST made us forget our yearning for Tres Leches. If you're in the area, stop in. Prices are good and so's the food.

Lupita's is a family owned place. We go back a looong way. All the way back to the days when it was a dinky, dingy little place on Montview Blvd in a tiny strip they shared with the Montview Bar and Grill (which is still there). It had, at most, a dozen tables covered with red and white checkered oil cloth, and mismatched chairs. The main cook was the father. I never knew his name; he was affectionately called "the old man". The rest of the staff was family. For seven or eight years we were bimonthly regulars. The menu was limited, but everything was fresh and delicious. When the old man retired in the early 90s they moved to larger digs on Colfax just west of Peoria where they are now. The food and service was just as good, but the atmosphere was different. We kept going for a few years, but less and less frequently, and eventually just drifted away. It's been at least 10 or 12 years since I've been in the place. When I checked Yelp for a spot for my weekly breakfast out, Lupita's came up in the search. Well heck, why not? The amazing thing is that after all this time, the place was exactly the same. It's like I was just there last week. And, as Jodi A. noted, it really needs to be updated. I had the chorizio, egg and potato burrito smothered with green chili and cheese. Wow! Lupita's, why oh why did I ever leave you? I'm back.
(4)Trish G.
Actually 3.5 stars. This mexican restaurant serves good fresh food - all the standards including generous looking 'combo' plates. The service is very friendly and the place is clean. Good sized booths or tables - your choice. And most importantly, a full-service bar! Oh, and they have breakfast all day? is this true? Might have to try the Huevos Rancheros and a Bloody.... If you aren't at Helga's raging it up with a few liters of Warsteiner, Fridays here look like fun with live entertainment - either a mariachi band or teen wonder singer! I had a great chicken burrito and two ice cold beers. Each time my beer was served with a fresh icy-cold frosty glass. Can't beat it!
(3)Elle J.
Very friendly staff, decent food, great portion size average prices. The decor is not that great but I'm more interested in food than decorations.

After several years, I was pleased to get back to Lupita's for lunch and I'm happy to say it hasn't changed a bit! I brought the place to the attention of my colleagues and the 5 of us headed over. Our crew includes everything from the foodies who will eat anything as long as it's authentic, others who just like good tasting food and me with my special love for all Mexican food whether gourmet or diner style. Lupita's met all of our wishes! I enjoyed a Pollo Poblano burrito that was the perfect mix of creamy, spicy chicken with grilled peppers and onions. It was smothered with green chili and honestly, I was enjoying my dish so much, I forgot to stop and taste the chili on its own to judge it. The other dishes all received high marks, and covered everything from tamales to a pork dish to a cold tomato based soup filled with seafood. My fresh made limeade was a highlight and I was pleased to note on the menu that they sweeten it with low-calorie sweetener. I was only halfway through my drink when it was refilled -- free refill on a "specialty drink"? Now you've got me! The prices cover just about every budget. I would think you could get out of here with a $6 lunch if absolutely necessary. Mine came to $10 before tip. (Oh and honorable mention for the fact that they offered separate checks with no guilt -- I love that) This place has the nice feel of authentic without being intimidating. Now, maybe I can convince a few friends to give it a try after work -- I can only imagine the margarita that limeade would make!
(4)Jodi A.
Lupita's is a nice little family place. Their food is pretty okay....the service is better. We got a WARM bowl of fresh chips and salsa. Very attentive waitstaff. I just wish....wish...they would take down the Christmas decorations. They leave them up all year. I can hang with the kitschy paintings and gaudiness. But they could make that place SO COOL if they wanted to ! The year round garland with red bow bunting surrounding the dining room, intermingled with Christmas lights has been up for YEARS ! The stained ceiling tiles, and the two different TVs with the sound on different channels, AND the background music sort of sums up the decorations too...kind of confused. I wish there was some kind of decorating show on HGTV that could go pimp their Restaurant out. I like them but I would like them more if one could take their friends there for marg's after work, and not be slightly embarrassed about the decor.
