Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

We eat here several times a month the salad plate is my favorite. One taco, one tostado, a ton of guacamole w/chips and a tostado with the best queso ever..

Been eating here since I was a teen in the early 2000s. I remember driving past it a few times and being intrigued so made the family stop in. Not the most exciting place or the most exciting food, but there's something on the menu for everyone and my little sister who is a connoisseur of refried beans loves them here. Soft, sloopy, 1980s-style Tex-Mex type food. Not for the gourmet, but absolutely wonderful as cheap comfort food. I always order their guacamole tacos (to the point that we all just call this "the guacamole taco place"), which are loaded with lettuce and tons of guac -more than a side of guac at any restaurant and for a fraction of the cost. Delish.

A good friend grew up eating here, and followed them to every location they moved to over the years. This friend recently came back from being abroad for a year and decided to have his birthday dinner here. This place is definitely off the beaten path, but the experience was pleasant and worth the travel time. The service was great, and the food came out nearly instantly, it was like the kitchen had a psychic and they'd been preparing our food while we drove there. The menu here is super simple, I went with a smothered bean burrito and a guacamole taco. My friend always orders the smothered cheese enchiladas, he claims they are the best in his opinion. The green chile here is very mild and soupy, but tasty. The guacamole taco is kind of insane, it is literally filled heavily with very good guac, so packed I decided it to eat it with a fork. They offer wine, beer, and margaritas. I would totally come back if I was in the area and wanted to chow down on some guacamole tacos and maybe try those cheese enchiladas my dear firend loves so much.

Good greasy Mexican American food

Do you like going to a restaurant where they just stare at you as you're sat down and are rude? You may like this place. The service is slow and not friendly and the food was extremely disgusting and when I mean disgusting it was the worst Mexican I've had in a long time. I dare to say that Casa Bonita is more authentic than this place. The green chili was nothing more than boiled water with chunks of onion and dried pork that lacked flavor to complement the greasy warm crap on my plate called a burrito. Needless to say I don't think we will be going back here anytime soon and I would recommend staying far far far away.

Been eating at Monterrey House in Arvada for years and all there previous locations. Even under the new management the food is still great. The service is fast and friendly. The Guacamole and chili con queso are excellent. I recommend the salad plate or cheese enchiladas with onions.

I love this place. I have been coming for at least 18 years. They have had new managment take over in the past 5 years or so but still yummy. The chili con queso are a must have. They have not changed at all over the years. I usually get the salad plate because it has a mix of everything but the smothered burritos with chuncks of pork on top are pretty nice as well. They have changed the flavor of some things and the prices have gone up a bit but if you were ever a fan of the old school marios you can still apprciate the yummy food.

if you think this place is remotely good, you need to try a place called Casa Bonita! Casa Bonita is a step up. we were served food in Chili Verde that is apparently oily soup. We will continue to look for decent Mexican food. Arvada has no idea what Mexican food is. Even the iced tea wasn't good. La Loma is a drive from us but a million times better than anything in Arvada.

Quick, that's for sure. But the enchiladas are soupy and bland while the queso is salty. You would be better off making queso at home with velveeta and rotel. One day I will find a Mexican restaurant in Colorado that has good queso. Sincerely, A Hopeful Texan

I really liked the cheese enchiladas thou the rest sucked the server made it right by offering another enchilada but diddnt offer comp chips forgot forks think if I eat here again will only be for takeout enchiladas

Not a fancy place by any means but ther e is no other flavor like The Monterrey House! My family has been eating these same recipes at various locations for over 35 years. Whenever I say the word Monterrey House I get the taste in my mouth and I have to make a trip no matter how far away I am... Be sure to take home a quart of green chili you won't be disappointed. Long live The Monterrey House!!!

A one star rating is higher then I would like to pick. 0 star is more like it. Went today after telling my bf I wanted to try something new. Live right a crossed the street from here for years and never tried it. Told my bf lets be adventurous! What an adventure it was. Felt like we were in Kansas or something. Very out of place being there. Got beef and bean burritos. The waitress almost dumped chili right on my lap.... Twice! Chili looked just like chicken broth and was just as thin. The most sick food I have ever tried! Disgusting!!!! Now my honey is complaining of upset stomach. Oh, 33.00 bucks to eat lunch. The diet coke was good at least! Save your stomach and money....don't eat here!!

I always wondered why the parking lot was empty here. This place is painfully mediocre! The decor is old school and the food is uninspired run-of-the-mill. The staff is friendly, but given the off the beaten path location, it's surprising this place remains open. That said, if they did a makeover with the decor and entire menu, this place could be decent. Looks like a job for Gordon Ramsay.

i love this place!! it's a great mom and pop place with fast service, great food, and the best margaritas! it's a casual family restraunt where "everybody knows your name". you cannot beat the prices and the portions! everything is made from scratch, so you never know how spicy it will be. i love it!!

My family has been eating at the Monterrey House since the early 1980s. I was therefore raised on this food. I loved it from an early age, and I can honestly say that I developed my love for spicy food by eating here every other week or so with my parents and my grandparents. I have many wonderful memories of eating at the Monterrey House with my family, and I hope to make many more. Many years ago, the original family that owned and operated the Monterrey House decided to leave the restaurant business, and they sold the restaurant to a new family. I will admit that we were terrified that the food would change for the worse. However, the new family knew that changing anything would be a disaster, so they left it all the same. Nothing changed. Absolutely nothing. It was a gift from above. Now that you know my history with this place, you're probably thinking that I'm just biased in favor of their food because of my family's love of it. You would be wrong. This place has some seriously legitimate and delicious cuisine. It's authentic, and the menu is simple. My personal favorite: the classic smothered burrito. The green chile with pork is to DIE for. The pork falls apart upon contact with your fork. You feel the spice, and it's warm and wonderful. What more could you ask for? Also, I love the chile con queso (served tostada-style with hot peppers and melty cheese). I have never been anywhere else that serves it the way they do, and trust me, it is unique, spicy, and freakin' delicious. The prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. You can get a giant meal for under $10 (and I'm talking GIANT). The restaurant's interior needs a little updating, but that's not why you go there, and that's not why there is always a steady stream of people eating at this quaint place in the quiet town of Arvada. Don't listen to Justin R's review. He obviously didn't eat at the Monterrey House, and, if he did, he quite literally got it all wrong. Trust me on this one. Try it for yourself. I hope it stays open for a long time, because I will be eating there with my family until the bitter end. Ole.

New Owner has improved the food and service but burritos are still awesome! Not a fancy place but good food in a quiet place where you can have a meal with family and friends without yelling.

Good service, bad food. Let me just say, I ate here on Tuesday and a member of my party is still suffering from food poisoning on Thursday evening. Is it possible it was not caused by eating here? Sure, but the fact that he felt great all day until about an hour after eating here is compelling enough evidence for me. Also, I had a bean-and-beef burrito that, while not upsetting my stomach, did not really make it happy either. It was just really plain - no extras, literally beans and beef wrapped up in a burrito slopped on a plate.

When I first came here with my girlfriend (now wife) 19 years ago I didn't appreciate the simple menu. I wanted variety! Instead they've won me over with their consistency and friendly service, even through an ownership change several years ago. Their queso is different from most in that they put it directly on tostada shells instead of having a bowl to dip chips in, but it is good and spicy. Their taco beef is a bit greasy for my taste, but the bean tostadas and green chili smothered burritos keep us coming back. The green chili has large chunks of pork, and most will call it runny because it isn't thickened with flour or corn starch. Just another variety in the Colorado/New Mexico style.

I have been coming to the Monterrey House since I was in my mothers womb! I was born in 1976, and she has been going to Monterrey House since she was a teenager! Their first place was North Denver- (Edgewater) near the old Elitches, then they moved to 6th and Wadsworth, and now they are in Arvada. Jerry and Grace the original owners sold the business, and went back to Mexico. I was so very grateful that the business did not close, and the new owners, continued to serve the same food. I have since moved to California, and any time I come to visit Denver I always go to Monterrey House. I was just there last week, and went 3 times!!!!! I LOVE THEIR FOOD!!! So does my entire family... You can not get mexican food like this, anywhere!!! I pray that they NEVER go out of business, and I will be able to enjoy their food for the rest of my life! If you do not like their food, there is something wrong with you! This is by far the best mexican food you could ever get! Their chili con queso is to die for! Their Green Chili burritos are amazing! And my favorite is the Salad Plate!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!!!

I ate here for lunch the other day because my boss was craving mexican food takeout and he said this place was good and he had been eating it for years. He ordered some combo and I ordered a smothered beef and bean burrito. The place is a dirty looking, ugly yellow building and the inside is unappealing as well. This can usually be overlooked if the food is good but this however was not the case. Upon returning to work to eat, I opened my tray to find a nasty looking soup-like greenish concoction. If I wasn't so hungry I probably would have gone with my better instincts and not eaten it but I was starving so I went ahead. The green chili was some of the worst I've ever had, chewy overcooked pork, and it was way too watery with not nearly enough spice. The beef and beans were bland and flavorless. The burrito was largely forgettable and lacking in flavor, and for the price, nearly seven bucks it was NOT worth it. When I lived in Arvada I used to drive past this ugly looking restaurant all the time and I never ate here because I thought it looked like it was probably a gross restaurant and it turns out I was right. I will never eat here again and anyone who thinks this is good Mexican food either has horrible taste buds or simply doesn't know better. Sorry boss, but you don't know good Mexican food!

Updated review...I decided to give this another shot after writing my first review, I thought to myself, why not, everyone deserves a second chance right? I got there to have dinner with a group of friends, server was pretty friendly, I thought cool, off to a good start :) I ordered a burrito with green chile on it just as the other gentleman reccomended in his review that was "to die for" and geared up with positive thoughts, its been awhile since ive been here I told myself and things and people change. I wanted this to work out, I really did because I support local business, it just wasnt there, it is clean inside, friendly but mediocre service, our drinks were empty for most of the meal, and its not a bad atmosphere. The food...it was ok, definately nothing to write home about and the only thung to die for was what it did to my stomach afterwards...sorry, I tried again and the best I can do for comparative price is two stars, one for service albeit not the worst i've had and one for the longevity of how long they have survived, many ups to them for that, I dont think I can bring myself to try it again for the food and that third star. I glady surrender my dukedom check in to you Kyle, enjoy it for years to come.
