I know the workers by name, and they always greet me. Great food, great service, and awesome people! Come here nearly every other day, I love it!

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a...it's easy to say if you sound it out. I'm practicing because we're hitting up the Garden Island (that would be Kauai) for our 20th anniversary next month. So while we were knee-deep in researching activities brochures, Yelp Kauai reviews, and trying on Hawaiian shirts to see if they still fit (it's been years since we've been to Hawaii), Hubby developed a hankering for a plate lunch place. I used Yelp to look up a more well-known Hawaiian bbq joint here in Sac, which shall remain nameless, but after checking its Yelp rating (only 2 stars!) for our nearest location, I found Hula Hawaiian BBQ instead. One short'ish drive to West Sac from the ol' homestead in Natomas, and I was standing in front of their big menu, trying to figure out what I wanted to order. Hubby had already set his heart on teriyaki beef and chicken. I settled on the Hula combo, which offered up bbq beef and chicken, as well as short ribs. Since it's a plate lunch, our orders also came TWO scoops of rice (nice), one scoop of macaroni salad, and a green salad under the meat. In true plate lunch tradition, you totally get your money's worth in the form of a ton of food for the price. Speaking of prices, a few things about Hula Hawaiian BBQ: 1. If you want brown rice instead of white, it's an extra 50 cents. 2. If you're dining in, you're charged for refills (25 or 50 cents, depending on size). 3. No charge for extra teriyaki or katsu sauce, which are available in large condiment pump containers, kept warm, with to-go containers/lids. Brilliant! I could eat just their white rice with that yummy warm teriyaki sauce! And no charge for that...yay! 4. Hubby's two-item teriyaki plate was only $6.99! 5. My Hula combo plate was only $7.39! All in all, this was my first time here to Hula, but it won't be the last. You can't beat the value, and the food was really good. Not fancy, but great stick-to-your-ribs plate lunch fare. Mahalo for reading my review, and aloha! :)

This place is much like L&L but more options other than just bbq meat and spam masubi. . I would give it 4 stars for the bbq items because it really does taste better than L&L and you get a huge portion. Sometimes even enough to take leftovers as a snack. But unfortunately, I would have to give it 3 stars because I wanted to try something other than a bbq item and I chose the Avocado Roll.. which is like a spring roll with very thin slices of avocado and some mixed greens.. you shouldn't call it an avocado roll if it's majority lettuce -.-

I've been here a few times and it seems that everytime I come here it just gets worse. Lately, when I order the bbq/teriyaki chicken or beef, it's swimming in sauce like its soup or something. (it's because of the cabbage water, they don't drain it good enough. I ordered a bbq cheeseburger and it was terrible. The tomato was rotten because it was just mush and fell apart, the onions were off and the lettuce was definitely not fresh. I really didn't want to write such a negative review but I need to let people know. The mahi mahi mini meal I bought today was good until I moved the fish and saw that my cabbage was moldy! GROSS! (I took a picture of it if you wanted to see it, it's in photos) I was so upset because I was sharing it with my 2 yr old. That's the last time I'll ever go there.

I used to *love* this place, but lately, the macaroni salad seems old and dry. I think they dish up the side orders of macaroni salad ahead of time, then put the styrofoam containers in the fridge. They aren't air tight, so the salad dries out. Now, if you just stick with getting the macaroni salad as part of the combo plate (and not as a side order), it's fresh, but watch out for the side order portions! If they would fix this issue, they'd be back to five stars because the meat is really good. We always get the teriyaki chicken and it's consistently delicious! The cabbage is a nice touch, too!

Great price for the amount of food you receive. The customer service is horrible tho.

Simple and straightforward "Hawaiian food". Good portions, reasonable prices and quick service. I have been visiting this place regularly ever since moving to West Sacramento.

Only place I know where u can get cheap sushi, but horrible service. Every time I go here, it always seems like the workers hate their jobs. They're never friendly (not even smile), but if u can get past that, then this is the place to go. The food is somewhat decent. I think I'm going to have a talk with whoever is in charge there next time.

My company does lunch delivery there for the benefit of our employee. This place is one on the list. The food is OK although some of them are horrible. (Rib too chewy, that curry chicken or pineapple chicken whatever's sauce is really horrifying). Not just that, their customer service sucks! Our company order there daily, and they still do not have the decency to separate the receipts for our employees. In fact, I often hear our girl who pick up the lunch complain they always YELL at her when she as them to separate the checks. HORRIFYING Customer service!

Its rare for me to write an update so soon after my initial review, but I was in the area and I thought I'd give this place another try. I wasn't to thrilled with the sushi roll I had a few days ago so I ordered a couple of different ones to try them out and fortunately they didn't have spam in them. The Hawaiian roll had chicken katsu in the middle and I thought it was really good. It was something I hadn't tried before. While waiting for my food, another customer went up to the counter because she had a problem with her order. The guy behind the counter tried explaining to her why there wasn't a problem and when she didn't understand, he got angry and raised his voice while jabbing his finger at the receipt. Whether it was resolved or not, she went and sat back down. I didn't catch the details but it was obvious that he should have handled the situation better. Their order numbering system is very disorganized. The numbers are not in sequential order so its like each one was randomly assigned when you got your receipt. Nobody knew when their food might be ready because the numbers were all over the place. When the food was ready, the girl behind the counter called out several different numbers and one of them may or may not have been a customer's. Its like she threw out numbers and hoped it matched someone's receipt. Then she read out what was in the order. This was very confusing. It wasn't busy, but it took nearly half and hour to get my two rolls ready. I'd give this place 4 stars because the food was good. I knocked off 2 stars because the employees irritated me. This place is way out of the way for me so I will not be back.

Pretty generic Hawaiian-style fast food restaurant. There's nothing interesting in terms of food options, and the atmosphere is equivalent to a fast food restaurant. The food isn't terrible, but I'm certainly not going out of my way to come eat here.

This place is your typical chain type restaurant. What I want more than anything is how the service is and the food. First we will start on the service, the service was good, they noticed that there was line forming and the clerk quickly opened another register, he was cool about my requests and the food came out hot and fast. I liked how they cooked the cabbage, I think L&L should do that but as an option, call me weird but I like raw cabbage. The mac and cheese was tasty but not as good as L&L and the meat was good. I still prefer L&L but this would be a second choice easily. Prices are comparable between the places. Portions are about the same. They do have sushi, I might have to come back to review their sushi! Don't hesitate on trying this place out!

    (3)
  • Catalina M.

Ok guys! Your person a register was nice. I always watch what I eat. I eat your food at least once a week but today it was bad! As soon as I left your store I started feeling pretty sick. I had to run to a trash on my way to target and started throwing up I couldn't help it. I thought it was because I ate a little too much, but 30 minutes later it started to give me stomach pain and made me feel even worse. I simply order a kids size meal. It's the first time so I don't know what happened to you guys food. Did your people wash your hands while making my food. Did you guys check the expirations of everytbing that was on my plate. I'm so dissapoited. I'm scared to go again and go Through this again :/

I grew up in the bay area when L&L Hawaiian BBQ opened up. Loved going there for the bbq chicken, short ribs and macaroni salad. After I moved to West Sac it was hard finding one close by until Hula opened up. I enjoy coming here for my Hawaiian BBQ fix. I would actually prefer Hula over L&L. Portions are nice. I always feel like I get the most for my money here. I also like their spam and chicken musubi. Their lunch special value meal isn't half bad either for a small burger and fries. Fries are comparable to McDonald's in my opinion. Get more for your money. I sometimes come here just for the fries.

    (4)
  • Elyzabeth P.

This place is as good as any L&L. Portions are good for the prices. Chicken is tender and patsy is crispy. Rolls are good. Hope you don't expect gourmet Mikuni style sushi for $4.39 a roll. My pocket book and tummy thank you Hula.

Horrible customer service only stopped because it was lunch time and I was close but won't come back forsure wasn't greeted and the woman brought my food out talking on her personal phone and threw my silverware at me I'm disgusted

I was looking for something fast and good so I turned to Yelp and found Hula Hawaiian BBQ restaurant. The services was fast and friendly I order the meat platter which was more than I can eat. I don't live in the area so reading the reviews was really helpful in making my decision. If I ever come back I was stop by and eat there again.

One star reflects terrible customer service received tonight with server Sammi and her co-worker. Order was called in at 4:58pm, I arrived, paid at 5:07pm. While ringing my order and not finishing with me, she begins helping a previous customer. I grab my card and receipt and stand back. Nothing is said. Another patron orders and pays. That patron receives their food. At 5:22, I ask where my food is. It was sitting on the counter since I arrived. They hand it over to me. I asked if the food/macaroni would still be ok since it is now warmed? They laughed... said, oh, its fine.

  • Raina L.

There aren't many restaurants near my house so Hula's my go-to spot when I want to grab a quick bite that's non-fast food. I always get take-out so the review is mostly based on their food, not service. My personal favorite is BBQ chicken and BBQ beef. The chicken is well-flavored and juicy; BBQ beef is also well seasoned but the meat portion feels a little inadequate. I like the macaroni salad and I always substitute the rice with their salad just because I usually have cooked rice at home already. If you like the macaroni salad too, you should ask for the substitution at no extra cost next time!

I've been here twice and the food is delicious! I'm speaking for only the sushi since that's all I've tried. The sushi is reasonably priced. They give you a hand full amount of ginger, wasabi and soy sauce when you order to-go. The workers here are very nice and diligent in their work. I will be coming back!

  • Jennifer S.

Food is decent. I got a sushi roll, was ok, better than at grocery stores but bare minimum for restaurant quality. The order taker was polite enough, food took a while to come out but it was busy. HOWEVER, 2 stars because the person who delivered our food was horrible! I never complain about service in restaurants because stuff happens and I get when you are short staffed, but this lady brought my friend the wrong food. She politely explained she ordered the plate not the soup and this woman immediately started full on shouting at her saying she ordered the soup and that's what she got an it was HER fault if she wasn't clear in her order and wouldn't exchange it and stomped away. My friend was so upset she was so nice to her and got attacked, I ended up giving her my food and will never go back. NO EXCUSE for that kind of behavior to your customers and I will never support this business again no matter how close it is to my house.

This is my go-to place for quick, but GOOD, sushi. Usually I call and order ahead for pick-up, but they're fast either way. I honestly have never tried the other menu options other than sushi, because my husband and I love the sushi so much. The rolls are generously sized and reasonably priced. The raw fish always tastes fresh and never "fishy." The workers have always been pleasant and courteous.

Sigh..another substandard version of food options, which seems to be the universal theme of food out here in Sacramento. Been in Sacramento for the week and am slowly having rice withdrawals, so I was on the quest for something with rice. Anything...with rice. I debated to find an L&L in the area, but was absolutely sick of yet another restaurant/fast food chain for dinner tonight. After eating here...hmm, not sure if L&L would have been any better! I ordered the Kalbi short ribs that came with two scoops of rice, wilted cabbage and macaroni salad. First of all...this was one of the most rubbery kalbi short ribs I have ever eaten! Trust me, the knife I had while eating could not cut through any of the meat. As I was eating it, I stopped after the second piece (total of 5 ribs) because if the meat was like this prior to eating, not sure how my tummy would digest it. Along with rubbery short ribs, the rice had a rubbery after taste as well. Sigh... The macaroni salad was bland, but I'll take it bland than salty. If the food was remotely good, it would be worth the price since you get a hefty portion. But for $6.99 of just eating rubbery food, geez...even Sriracha that I threw on it couldn't save it.

Love this place. I like the sushi the best. And its not to pricey. The combos are yummy too. I enjoy the bbq mix combo. Its all very filling

  • Daniel R.

Love this place. Way better and healthier cuts of chicken then L& L. I always get the Hawaiian BBQ platter. Also love the Dragon roll. For a BBQ place the sushi rocks! *update 3/8/2012 for those that say L&L is better. That's just a matter of taste apparently because L & L has pretty much the same menu minus the tasty cabbage that comes with hula. The chicken has fat at L&L and although very tasty it's not choice cut like Hula. I'm sorry, seriously. You want better cut and presentation of food ? Go to Hula. You want excellent tasting sushi? Go to Hula. L&L does not have sushi. Btw, the macaroni salad is the bomb! And I normally don't like macaroni salad at all

I was born and raised in Hawaii and I've eaten Hawaiian plate lunches my entire life. I found this gem when I moved to West Sac. and it rocks! They give you a lot of food for very reasonable prices. For example, the full size BBQ chicken plate is $6.20 and it's onolicious (Hawaiian for delicious). All plates in Hawaii come with 2 scoops rice and 1 scoop mac salad as a standard, plus shredded raw cabbage under the meat. The only difference is this place serves cooked cabbage. If you don't like mac salad, you can substitute rice or veggies instead of it. People from Hawaii love mac salad, so I get an extra scoop on the side when hungry. I like Hula's better than L&L, which I grew up with (and I know the L&L franchise owner in Hawaii), plus this place has sushi and burgers and fries if that's your thing. The only thing Hula's doesn't have is lau lau, malasadas, or haupia like L&L does. The staff is always friendly and the place is always clean and the food is cooked fresh when you order it. The mixed plates are enough for 2 meals. I'd eat here everyday if I could, but then I'd weigh 300 lbs. :) Anyway, 2 thumbs way up for this place from this Hawaii girl.

This is a generic version of L&L and as such everything is substandard. I could complain about everything other than the Canned Guava and Spam, but let me give recommendations instead: - Serve FRESH sushi. - Hire a cashier with Real Hawaiian Hospitality that's happy to be working there and welcoming to the customers. - Use seaweed wrap that's NOT Chewy. - Don't water down the Macaroni Salad. - Clean the Bathrooms and add a pleasant Scent. - Work on another sauce mix, the one you have isn't cutting it. Yuck. * Hope this helps you to be better, I like Hawaiian food and really wanted to enjoy my lunch.*

  • Nani V.

I was super excited when I saw that they served spam musubi, I took an order of that along with a mini meal of the chicken katsu. The chicken was okay, but the mac and cheese was a bit overwhelming. The first few bites were good, then I got sick of it afterwards and stopped eating it. I guess next time I'll exclude it in my meal. I really enjoyed the spam musubi though and thought about them again today. :) My friend ordered the Hawaiian roll, which looked really good too. I look forward to try more from Hula.

Maybe the worst customer service ever, but the food is pretty good! Nothing really groundbreaking but good solid Hawaiian bbq to stop for if you dont mind cashiers with that "dead behind the eyes" look

  • Adri A.

The food is real good, especially the rolls. I've been going there for years (I think since they opened) and have had no complaints. Great service. The workers there are very pleasant and have been there since the beginning. It says a lot when the workers don't change; usually means the environment they work is one they like.

    (4)
  • Jeanice S.

I seem to a always come here for their Spam masubi. Don't know why, maybe because it's not too much and not too little for lunch. It's under $3 for two masubis. I usually order on the phone to go and they always have my order ready when I arrive. The place is never really busy when I go for lunch. It's always clean inside. The shopping area it's located in has a lot of stores to visit. There's a Starbucks, Subway and a yogurt place right next to it. This place will be around for a while.

  • Kathleen L.

I love this place because the service is fast, the food is good, and they have multiple selections to match your budget. The people who work here have remembered me from almost 4 years ago when I was in high school and they ask me how college life is every time I come back during vacations. The food here is great for a quick but filling lunch. I appreciate that they have half-sized servings because I don't usually finish an entire whole-sized meal. They also serve sushi which is surprisingly good, albeit a bit pricey. In terms of cheap food, they have an unbeatable lunch deal of $2.99 for a burget and a bunch of fries and they also have spam musubi which is an easy way to curb your hunger. I like to come here when I just need to grab lunch and I want to get full. The food won't disappoint and the people are friendly.

Typical Hawaiian BBQ place. Good serving sizes. Ordered the katsu and versus L&L taste fresher and definetely thicker. Worth it if you like this food.

I was (surprisingly) pleasantly surprised by this place. I've definitely had my fair share of Hawaiian BBQ eateries since they started popping up all over the place, but this one, by far, is way better than any L&L BBQ you'll ever eat at. You walk and definitely get that sense of Deja Vu since it has the same feel as L&L. It has pictures of food on the wall right next to images of Hula dancers. When I went, I ordered the Chicken Combo and a Volcano Roll. I got the food in about 5 minutes and sat down to partake in my 4th of July lunch. The Volcano Roll was bigger than I was expecting and wasn't bad considering this isn't a Sushi restaurant. The Volcano Roll has Spicy Tuna, Avocado, and Cream Cheese inside it, which is then deep fried and topped with Spicy Mayo, Unagi Sauce, and Green Onions. There were nine pieces to the roll and each piece was the equivalent of 2 1/2 bites. Although it wasn't fantastic, it wasn't bad either. BUT, for the price, $7.99 for the roll, I've definitely had better. As for my Chicken Combo, it was big in size and fairly yummy. It had Chicken Katsu and BBQ Chicken served with White Rice and a Macaroni Salad. Overall, the whole combo meal was pretty good. Nothing stood out as extraordinary in the meal, but for less than $7.00 for the Chicken Combo, I had leftovers good enough for a very satisfying late night snack. My recommendations: if you're looking for a cheap meal, definitely give this place a try. You really can't go wrong with their Chicken Combo.

  • Mary N.

You get A LOT of food for the price. The food is always fresh and flavorful. Some typical hawaiian bbq menu you see at places like L & L BBQ. However, the "mini meals" here are much larger. You get a bigger portion of meat and macaroni salad. The staff is always super friendly. Great local West Sac addition.

I really don't get what other people are complaining about. When it comes to good Hawaiian BBQ that is more like the L&L drive-ins in Hawaii than the L&L spots here in Sac... well... why complain?? I've been to the L&Ls in Hawaii... and they were AWESOME... and this spot comes pretty damn close. I almost always get the short ribs with all rice... only complaint... sometimes there are these lil brush hairs stuck to my shortribs from the basting brush... I also get a CA roll and a miso soup... yeah I can eat! The CA roll is awesome because it has both avocado and cucumber and is usually a really good size and the miso soup is better than most places with a ton of seaweed and tofu. LOVE IT! so yeah... in response to someone else's post before... yes there are ppl who work in the kitchen that sometimes stare... but its probably not a good idea to wear something that shows off most of your boobs anyhoo... just not really classy... ya know? but to each their own... a lil cleavage is sexy... more than half your boob hanging out... not so much. I would stare too... and I don't swing that way... so... you know its not because I want your boobs in my line of vision... its just THERE. ANYHOO... I did get the ppl at my last workplace hooked on this place... so YAY for HULA!

Food: -Mini meals are awesome at $4.69/each. I always get the Chicken Katsu with Curry. -Burgers deals are amazingly cheap, fries are fried fresh. -Their soups are very healthy Environment: -Clean, -You serve yourself, get your own drinks and sauces -Clean up your own stuff if you don't want to look like an ass Service -Could be better, but you don't go there expecting to be catered to. -Pretty straight forward attitude. It's between Subway and Starbucks in the target plaza.

The food is cheap here and tastes good considering it being a fast food type restaurant. I would normally order the Seafood Combo Mix which includes chicken, a fish fillet, and two pieces of fried shrimp. The plate was about $6 and they give you plenty of food. I would normally have leftovers which would be my dinner. They also have other foods such as burgers, noodles, sushi but I have not tried any of those items yet.

We went here for the first time the other day, and the food was good and the prices were reasonable. We got our food fast despite the fact that they were very busy, which is good. What's good about the menu is, they have the standard Hawaiian BBQ items as well as sushi! We will definitely be making this a regular stop when we are in West Sacramento.

I've been in west sac for about 2 years and this has remained one of my favorite places for a quick meal. The service is great and their menu has a large variety of dishes at a wide range of prices. I still can't believe how inexpensive they are compared the L&L GREAT portion sizes too. They make the food quickly and always do so with a smile. The restaurant can get a little noisy but that's to be expected considering how close the complex is to the high school.

  • Chris K.

I used to frequent this place in my bachelor days, its your basic hawaiian bbq menu, but with sushi. The food is decent, comes out quick, and is inexpensive. Service is friendly and will chat with you if its slow. I like their kalua pork combos and the loco moco. I also enjoy the spam musubi, one of the few acceptable ways to eat spam. Their sushi is excellent, and i am very picky about sushi, this is one of the VERY FEW places i will order sushi from that is not a sushi bar. Still seems to be doing well lately, so they must be doing something right.

When I don't feel like cooking dinner, i usually drop by and order something to go. There menu is a basic hawaiian bbq place with sushi and a lot better than the chain hawaiian bbq place around the sacramento area. The food is good and they cook is when you order it. Plus, you don't have to wait too long for your food either. Sometimes it can get a little crowded in the restaurant during dinner time, because everyone want to have dinner. I usually order the short ribs or grilled chicken combo. Not too big on macaroni salad, so replace it with an extra scoop of rice. I love my food with the sauce they have at the restaurant. The staff is very nice, the restaurant is pretty clean too. I would totally recommend this place.

Great place and food! I have been wanting to try hawaiian food in Sac since the only kind I've had has been in Hawaii. I was born and raised in sac but I'm not very experimental with food. This place was good! I was skeptical because of the reviews but thought I'd give it a try since I was in the area. I got the bbq chicken mini meal and got out the door for $5 which was great! I was told that the meat portion on the mini meal is the same as the reg meal but less rice and mac salad. Speaking of mac salad, I really liked it! I don't know why people were talking down about it. The people aren't that friendly but they get the job done. I will be back!

First time here today, since my friend wanted to check it out since she was humgry. The door caught my eye, with the burger advertisement. $2.99 for burger & fries? Good deal. What's even better is that the burger was deeeeeelicious. Tasted just like an In N Out burger! I ordered the cheeseburger btw. They gave me more than enough fries, i liked that. It was served in a togo white box, because i ordered to go. The menu also caught my eye...there were chicken katsu, barbecue ribs, and omg SUSHI. I definetley want to come back for the sushi cause the picture on the menu looked like it tasted yummy. So yeah, ill tell you how the sushi tasted...but in the mean time..go check this place out if you haven't so! Ps, customer service was welcoming.

I ordered the Kahlua pork and my husband ordered the bbq beef. I enjoyed the rice and mac salad but the pork was not very favorable. It had a smokey flavor but lacked other flavors including salt. My husband loved the beef but thought the rice was too sticky. Also the people working their love to stare made us very uncomfortable.

  • Eric P.

This place is disgusting. Would you like anything that's not deep fried or smothered in mayonnaise or teriyaki? Too bad. The few times I've eaten here I've craved something- anything- fresh or healthy to go with my food. But I guess that's not what I should expect. Just unappetizing. Macaroni salad lumped with hot food so it becomes warm.. fish with potential to be good but served no other way than breaded and fried.. The sushi is not a good substitute. The service is also sub-par here as well. Avoid this place if at all possible.

  • Yves J S.

It smells sooooooooo good when they are barbecuing some short ribs and the aroma just lingers through out the plaza like sweet temptation in the air. I'm such a sucker for food. I'm very fortunate to be active enough to compensate for my compulsive eating habits. I would be fat bastard from Austin Powers otherwise. The restaurant is located between the Starbucks and Jamba Juice in the plaza where Nugget and Target reside. It is a smaller store with usually a couple cooks in the back, and a cashier in the front. The place is usually kept pretty clean which is impressive considering the number of staff there usually at a minimum. The menu is pretty easy to read, but please stand by if you need time to decide so others can continue on ahead. The food has always been prepared well. It's not usually my first choice when it comes to food choices, but I can't complain. The portions are very reasonable for the price, and the freshness is definitely there. Assuming your not a good for nothing picky eater like myself, you would probably love the food here. They also serve sushi rolls here as well, but if sushi is what your craving there is Tsuki's sushi right across the street by Lowe's if you have the time and craving for it. The service is great. The staff has always been friendly, they always seem to be working hard, and the cleanliness/organization/activity in the kitchen is a reflection of that.

I work right by here, so this is one of my favorite places to stop by. They have never gone wrong on my orders since I've started going there nearly 4 years ago now, and that's always a plus for me. PROPER ETIQUETTE: Walk in, look over the menu hanging above, or grab a menu at the front desk. Stand aside if you need time to think. Order, sit to eat or take it home. Tip is not needed. WHAT I SAW: (1) small clean restaurant, (2) 1-2 people at the front and 2-3 cooks in the back. MY THOUGHTS: Must have been in business a while now, they have more than 1 cook, which suggests a quicker turnaround in service. WHAT I READ: A large menu of mixed Asian food. I saw a lot of Korean and Japanese, but cooked in classic Hawaiian style, of course. MY THOUGHTS: Awesome. I get to try things with a twist. Nice. WHAT I'VE ORDERED: I've tried the chicken katsu, bbq chicken, loco moco, spam musubi, Teriyaki Chicken, Kalbi short ribs, crab langoon, vocano roll, hula roll, and miso soup. All orders of meat come with 2 scoops of steamed rice, 1 scoop of macaroni salad, and cooked cabbage beneath the meat. MY THOUGHTS: Chicken Katsu - bland without the sauce, not a good thing to take home because it tastes the best when it's still hot and crispy. Can be eaten with the Katsu sauce, or try it with teriyaki for an interesting taste. BBQ Chicken - Maybe my tastebuds are overly sensitive, but their BBQ chicken has JUST the right amount of flavor for me. How do I know? Because I don't get sick of it. Overwhelming tastes make me happy for all of 5 seconds before I have to stop eating it. MY RECOMMENDATION: They serve in LARGE portions, and eating that much can get bland and too much to take in. If you'd like to try either the Chicken Katsu or BBQ Chicken, I recommend getting the chicken combo which gives you half portions of each. Two meals in one! It's just the right amount of food to enjoy, and you won't get bored right away. Loco Moco - I like this when it's cold. If I want Loco Moco, I order something else with it, so I can eat the Loco Moco later on after it's cooled off. But it is A LOT rice, meat, and gravy. A LOT. You can get sick of it pretty quickly. If you want to try it, I suggest splitting it with at least 3-4 other people. Spam Musubi - Delicious! Big, with a good amount of spam and rice. BUT, when you try to eat it right away the seaweed wrap is not moist enough and doesn't break easily, so it can become a big mess. If you wait about 15-20 minutes before eating it, then the seaweed wrap is soaked well and you can bite through it easily. Teriyaki Chicken - Too salty for me. Ate it, and threw half of it away - not because it was bad, it was just too overwhelming in salt. Not to my liking. Kalbi Short Ribs - This is what I've grown up with. Meaning, if you don't know, expect a lot of fat on this thing. It's practically half meat, half fat. I have a skewed idea of what this product should taste like since I've grown up in a Korean family, so honestly I don't like the Kalbi short ribs as much just because it doesn't taste right to me. Crab Langoon - Overwhelming amount of cream cheese in them. They'll give you 6 pieces and I always share with another person. Trying to eat all 6 will just make me hate Crab Langoon forever. Overall thought, in small portions, a good appetizer if you're into the unique flavor or cream cheese and wonton. Volcano Roll - Spicy tuna, avacado, and cream cheese - unique in flavor, but too much to take in all at once. The whole roll is deep fried and it's really good when you want that heavy fried food feeling. But if you want something light, then the Volcano Roll is not the way to go. Hula Roll - Shrimp tempura, avacado, cream cheese, salmon, and lemon. Yummy. A good mixture of tastes that leave me happy. Miso Soup - Tastes like any other miso soup you've had in any small restaurant. Not impressed, nor disappointed in it. Macaroni Salad and Cabbage - The macaroni salad is very simply made with mayo and carrots. You'll either like it or hate it. There is no inbetween for this side dish. It's a taste that will either make you want more, or a taste that will turn you off completely. Cabbage - Sometimes I wish they would offer a different variety of vegetables, but I'm good with the cooked cabbage. They don't add anything else to the cabbage to make it "tasty" so it's perfect to eat with your meat. WHAT I EXPECTED: It's a small restaurant, without waiters, so I already knew I would not be waited on. It's a standard Asian restaurant for me, so I wasn't surprised. MY OVERALL OPINION: I love this place and its variety of food. I try different dishes there all the time to figure out what I like and what I don't like. I'm the one that looks for food that's flavorful but not overwhelming. If it's too much, I won't like it, no matter how popular a place might b

Half of us liked this and half of us did not. There is a subway next door after all. Teriyaki beef with rice and macaroni, so cheap and you can add all sorts of sauce to cover the flavors.

To me this place is more chinese influenced food. The chicken katsu had a hint of ginger, and the sauce was similar to sweet and sour sauce. The part that got me was the boiled cabbage. I lived in hawaii and worked at Zippy's, I never seen anyone use boiled cabbage as the bed for the meat. The BBQ chicken, beef, and ribs were just as the katsu, contained a strong ginger taste. The portion of the protein was small, since the boiled cabbage was 1/3 the protein size the plate looked big. I do not think I will be returning here since after I ate my stomach did not agree with the food.

I dig this place! Cheap and tasty! I go for the BBQ Chicken, with boiled cabbage, macaroni salad...mmm. Best after a hard workout. You practically get full for less than 5 dollars with good food..say that about other restaurants.

We really enjoy sushi from here, its very reasonably priced and convenient, when you call in ahead with your order. Lately, I must admit, I am becoming addicted to their Spam masubi - yum!

Very reasonable prices and very good food. I usually get a sesame chicken plate and I'm never dissapointed. And if you're super cheap they have a $3 burger and fry combo mon-fri during lunch time.

The food is good and comes out quick. We always get the chicken/beef barbeque. It comes with rice, macaroni salad and cabbage

I love eating here when I'm too lazy to cook food while back home. It's right across the street from my parents house so I try to make an effort to eat here at least once while I'm in town. I usually order their mini bbq beef combo. Their meat is soooo flavorful and juicy!!! I've been to other hawaiian bbq chains and their meat never has as much flavor as this place. The place is always clean and tidy. I like the little station of condiments how you can pump your own warm teriyaki or katsu sauce.

This place is good for the food wise but the workers there are horrible. I'm a girl who is well endowed. I go there wearing basketball shorts and t-shirt and I see the Mexican workers there staring at me like they have never seen breast before. WTF!!!!! My family used to own a restaurant and what they did are so rude. since my bf lives close to hula I dont have to dress up and go there so i just go in pj type of clothing and they still stare. i rather drive to L&L on broadway instead of going here and getting sexual harrass. zero stars!!!!!!!

One of the hidden treasures of West Sac. Looking for some good Hawaiian bar b que or some decent to good CHEAP sushi. Come to Hula Hawaiian!! We order a regular combo plate and various sushi minus the cucumber. All for less than $35 to feed the family!!! This place a must go!

Love this place. First & foremost the food is good. The meat is nicely marinated, not too salty. The meat is cooked when you order, so it's nice and hot with a light char. The portions are huge, I usually share the BBQ mix w another person or have leftovers for 2 more meals. All for just a little more than a value meal at a fast food burger joint. They even give you veggies, braised/boiled cabbage w your protein & starch. I go at least once a week.

If you've been to L&L and enjoy the food, you'll enjoy this place much more. The food tastes great. Price is reasonable and the staff is always friendly.

Haven't been in a while, but went back for lunch today and still just as good as I remember. It also seemed like I got more food than normal. Maybe I just wasn't as hungry as I normally was, lol. You get a lot for you money. Only 5 bucks for the BBQ chicken mini meal which was plenty enough for me. The macaroni salad is ok, but I'm not a fan of macaroni salads in general so I always get two scoops of rice instead of 1 scoop of each which they are always more than willing to accommodate me. Service is quick too. Normally I would go in before or after the lunch rush, but I forgot my lunch today and was starving by noon, so I went anyway and even though they were busy, I didn't wait long for my food. I think it's an acquired tasted, but I personally LOVE it.

Think Panada Express serving "Hawaiian BBQ". That's basically Hula Hawaiian BBQ. I got the mixed BBQ plate and got to sample a bit of everything: chicken, short ribs and beef. Came with rice, cole slaw and macaroni salad. The portion was so huge I had half for dinner, half for lunch the next day. Price was about $7. First, I don't eat Cole Slaw and the macaroni salad was icky (I am not a huge fan of any pasta salad). So Those don't get any points from me. The rice was plain white rice- cooked just right. The Chicken was excellent. (for fast food) The Beef was excellent (for fast food) The short ribs were really fatty- not so great. Overall, I guess if I am in a hurry and need something quick I would probably go back. However, I don't think I will ever find myself craving the place. And I'd probaby just get rice and chicken.

Pros: Sushi adds variety to an otherwise typical hawaiian fast food menu, cleanliness, $2.99 lunch deal Cons: Inconsistent portion size, food quality/taste is just on par with similar establishments (L&L, Ohana) Verdict: This local restaurant is more or less just your average Hawaiian fast food spot. They do serve sushi, which diversifies the menu a bit. If you're looking for an L&L or Ohana-style food and you're in the Southport area, this would be the place to go.

this review is for the laguna location this is my favourite place in the south sac/elk grove area. the portions are huge and their meats are delicous. its very similar to all the other hawaiian bbq places but better. the chicken katsu here is actually thick and meaty. not like that thin mostly batter stuff at l&l. and the bbq chicken is moist compared to the dried and tasteless chicken at hawaiin grill on big horn. oh, and all the meat combos are served on top of steamed cabbage which i always eat. good stuff.

I actually found this place by accident when I was on my way to Target in West Sac. Since I am famished, I decided to stop by after my visit to Target. As I stepped in, the set up is very similar to L&L Hawaiian BBQ except Hula did not play Hawaiian music but rather it appears to be music from Y92. Hula appears be another chain out of Hawaii as the menu signage comes with stock photos and such. In a lot of ways, the menu is almost identical to L&L but with a small selection of sushi rolls. The place is very clean including the restrooms but it could be that the shopping center is brand new. The price is pretty competitive and you will get a lot for the money. I decided to order the Hawaiian Mixed BBQ which comes with 2 slabs of Short Ribs, BBQ Chicken, BBQ Beef with comes with the standard 2 scoops of rice, mac salad and cabbage. Let me start with the sides first, the mac salad is just mayo, mac and carrots, I thought it was better than L&L because the mac salad was not drowned in mayo and instead of raw cut cabbage, the cabbage at Hula is cooked. The three meat entree were cooked just right which they can be cut rather easily with the plastic fork, I enjoyed the short rib the most which was marinated in teriyaki based sauce mixed some diced ginger and garlic mixed in. The BBQ chicken was not as good because it had an aftertaste kick with it and the BBQ beef seems to be bland even though I can taste a hint of the marinate. As for the service, even though the place was kind of dead, none of the people working there had attempted to check on the patrons let along chat with their customers. I see them chatting with one another but not the customers. The condiments section is pretty well stocked with empty containers to fill with Teriyaki and Katsu sauces or sauce packets such as Shoyu, Teriyaki and yes, Shirocha packets... Overall, I have to give it 2 1/2 stars, rounding it down for customer service. Food is serviceable but it could be better.

This place is a refreshing departure from the cheap-and-quick, grease-deluged fast food slump that's unsettlingly easy to resort to after a back-breaking day of unpacking, cleaning, staging and decorating. Prices are generally less than $7 for a massively-portioned combo. I recommend the chicken katsu, but I nix the rice and opt for the green salad and bed of hot boiled cabbage, which pair marvelously with the katsu sauce. After all, I like leaving a meal feeling satisfied rather than having been beset with GERD.

The Ahi and Shrimp tacos were so good! If you want to cheat a little order the sweet potato fries! They are so good but make sure your sharing because we didn't even put a dent in them! The service was awesome and the drinks were good! They have some awesome margaritas and the atmosphere and casual and laid back! Nice easy and located in a convenient spot, parking pretty easy!

Went here yesterday (for the first time) for a quick bite. I wasn't familiar with Hawaiian food, so I went with a cheese burger and fries. Had difficulty with the language barrier trying to order my food. Burger was a frozen pattie along with the fries, but it got the job done. Will be back to try something new.

if you like big portions you'll like this place... but if you want a delicious satisfying meal it's not gonna happen here. i'd only eat here a couple times when i'm craving hawaiian bbq and i am too lazy to drive all the way to elk grove for some HSG, even though i would be sacrificing quality over quantity. however when i decided to try their kalua pork i was turned off. um... season much? how about at least a smidgen of salt? okay, i guess i should've known from past experience that it would be bland as heck, but come on?! not my kalua pork! dude, if you're gonna make a certain kind of food, wouldn't you at least try to make it taste ... like what it's supposed to taste like? service-wise, just like their flavorless food - lacking. i WILL say however that their spam musubi rocks my socks hence 2 stars. at other hawaiian bbqs they're incredibly stingy on the spam like they're limiting the restaurat to use one can for the whole week. the spam to rice ratio is quite balanced at hula and this is the one item that i've tried that was actually tasty. it's something in the rice.

For the price, everything I have had is fantastic. It's a fast food restaurant, so you shouldn't go in expecting the freshest meals, but it's never disappointed me, and I eat there at least once a week, usually more. I started with the burger lunch deal, which is cheap and surprisingly good. Their fries are fantastic, and for $2.99, it's great. The barbeque pork surprised me, it was much better than I expected. The chicken katsu is also very good. The meals come with white rice and macaroni salad. Though I am not a fan of macaroni salad, there's is more than bearable. In my opinion, one meal, around $7, is enough for lunch and dinner. The mini-meals they now offer are a good alternative, and still filling. I was hesitant to try the sushi, but I am so glad that I did. The volcano roll is incredible, being both deep fried and spicy - two of my favorite things. All in all, the portions are impressive, and the quality of food is really great for the price.

i love this place because you know when you get that craving for sushi but you realy dont want to have to go into a restaruant and sit down, you just want the sushi now! this is the place to get it!, big proportions and tasty, count me in! i go here often for my lunch break and i have never been dissapointed.

i've been on a spam masubi kick for two and a half weeks straight. i need to have it. i gotta have it. i can have it here for $2.59 for two pieces. yummm. sometimes i think they put too much rice in it but then i end up eating it all so i guess it's not too much. i also get their miso soup & it's only .99 & it comes with HELLA (norcal) seaweed & lots of tofu chunks. the person who takes my order is never polite but i'm not trying to date her, i just want all of her spam. :/

This location has pretty good food but their service could be better. However, it's close to my house so there's a convenience factor involved. They have the usual Hawaiian menu, sushi rolls, and burgers & fries which is a pretty good selection overall. The photos of the food that they have in the restaurant are helpful as well especially with the sushi rolls. The one gripe I have is that they probably cook their french fries in the same oil as the fried fish burgers cuz the fries came out a bit fishy-flavored. Not what I was expecting.

been here two or three times when i had a craving for hawaiian and was in the area. they serve all the usually hawaiian drive inn stuff (like L&L) + a bunch of sushi rolls. had the chicken katsu one time, and it wasnt bad. i liked how the sauce was kept in a dispenser so you could get as much as you like. and just this weekend, went back to have the kalua pork with steamed cabbage. the pork was decent, they gave lots of meat, and i ran out of rice first. i couldnt eat the mac salad tho. this was a to-go order, so i guess when i got home, the box got steamy from the hot food and the mac salad got all watery. all in all, not the worst food, but also not the greatest. ive had better hawaiian elsewhere. if you live nearby and dont want to drive far, this place will do.

i think this may be my first 1 star. Ive given this place 2 chances and they disappointed me both times. both times it was empty but this last time they had like 3 workers in there. no one acknowledged me when i got in and i sorta gave them that look that i was ready to order. i ordered chicken katsu cuz that's what i generally get at a Hawaiian BBQ place. the price for it was about average to a little under for this dish. anyways the help wasn't to friendly and i took my seat and waited for my order. i got it and had to make sure there was some type of katsu sauce and some napkins and a fork. this irks me when you take something out and they dint give you the right utensils, napkins or condiments for you, or even offer. OK so i get home and check out my order. looks about right for what it should be. so i try it out and dip my chicken. the batter was way to thick IMO and a little overcooked. but this may have been due to the chicken cuts were horrible. its like they took all the good stuff in one bowl and all the crap in another. then made me the latter. so it was fatty, overcooked and the sauce was very watery. i dunno to bad experiences and I'm done with this place. go to l&l or oahu for your Hawaiian BBQ fast food.
