I'm always game for exploring new restaurants. Make it a sushi joint and I'm in. I got a Dine50 Pass for the month of April (2015) I paid $3.99 for the pass and in return, I get to visit over 50 participating Japanese restaurants and get select dishes at 50% off regular price. Win Win!! I get to explore new restaurants and try some of their select dishes at a very reduced price. I love it. Sushi Anza is a small sushi place in Torrance. As you walk in, they have a small sushi bar (5 to 6 people). They really squeezed as many tables in this area as possible. For the Dine50, you had your choice of 3 dishes. Spicy Tuna & Shrimp Bowl, Mackerel & Yellowtail Bowl or Salmon & Yellowtail Bowl all at $9.25 each. I went with the Mackerel & Yellowtail Bowl. I was (WAS) not a fan of mackerel for the longest time. I thought it was too fishy and the taste wasn't to my liking, so I avoided it at all cost. Recently, I got a chance to sample some during an omakase dinner. I was surprises at how good it was. Since then I've been craving mackerel. The bowl came with 4 mackerel pieces and 3 yellowtail pieces on a bed of rice. Both fish were sliced a little thicker than you would have as a sashimi offering and bigger. Both were very very good. Miso soup accompanied the meal and that was good as well. Service was friendly and helpful. They offer a variety of Happy Hour specials. I think that would be the best time to hit this place up. I was happy I came here. This is a lot farther than I'm used to going for lunch, but I will certainly be back. The sushi was very very GOOD!! 2015 Review #43

I hate to say this because the service was so friendly and attentive, and the decor was so adorable inside, but the food is just not good. I ordered a sushi combination dinner and the fish was not fresh at all. The salmon was a brownish color, not orange. All the other fish was hardly edible because it looked so discolored and old. The california rolls that came with it were falling apart. We ordered a cucumber sunomono salad with octopus and there was no octopus in it. We also ordered one of my favorite Japanese snack dishes, sausage with mayo-- usually the sausage is grilled, hot, and flavorful. The sausage at Sushi Anza is boiled and came out lukewarm. I will say this: there is a lot of variety, and for cheap. It seems like a fun place to try many different dishes. I just don't trust the raw fish here. Disappointed and will not be coming back. Also I think it gave me food poisoning.

I've tried few things but my favorite thing in Sushi Anza is spicy tuna hand roll. It's really big and they give you so much tuna inside!! For $3.90 each, I think it's definitely worth it! Oh, one down side about them is they don't speak much English, so whenever I put in a phone order, it takes a very long time. They are really nice though, so just be patient. This is my favorite sushi place in Torrance. :D
(4)Chloe L.
Their service was good, I love their sushi deluxe combo : ma fav!!! Also it comes with miso soup, which is tasty ! Fried chicken and mixed tempurs are all good. With Asahi and hot sake.. omggg !
(5)Vanessa G.
My 3rd time coming here and they seriously have the best vegetable rolls! The decor inside is solo adorable! I love the vibe. Very cozy. They're open until 1:30am on the weekends so it's nice to come with friends for a late night gathering of delicious food and awesome Japanese alcohol ;) seriously, give this place a try! I recommend it. Their service is A1 and very affordable as well! I'm definitely a regular now.

Craving sushi? This hits the spot if you're looking to fill your cravings @ fair prices. A hidden gem located in the corner of a small shopping center. It's quaint, pretty quiet, but run by a local Japanese pair very typical of a traditional Japanese sushi restaurant. FOOD: This isn't for someone whose looking to eat California rolls and salads... (no offense). The boy and I opted to try their lunch special: #5 Sushi Combo Deluxe, toro, maguro and hamachi nigiri and ended up just getting the sashimi roll on the side because we were starving for some good fish.. Although the sashimi roll was humongous, it was pretty hard to eat unfortunately. But tasted fresh regardless. Miso soup was fresh, and the waitress was attentive. **NOTE: I've read a few 2-3 star reviews below. FYI sushi/nigiri is always served at room temperature. If you eat anywhere with cold sushi that means it's old and I'd highly advise NOT eating it or sending it back to have fresher sushi. The rice should not be cold either. QUICK TIP: Lunch specials are actually great for what you get. Great deals during Happy Hour too, which carry over to the weekend. OVERALL: Local place for me to get a quick fix of Japanese food.

Best sushi place!! With long history in this town. Japanese traditional sushi skill! Try chef's special course. Omakase is excellent. Also, they are so friendly and price is reasonable. Not tight as hokka hokka sushi. Just like home made mood and food. Recommend¡!

Headline:satisfied sushi craving What: Sushi A combination, comes with miso soup-sushi was of my favorite melt in your mouth consistency. There was a little too much wasabi nestled in the sushi for my taste-I don't think it should shock your senses in one bite, but I enjoyed the quality. For $11.80 lunch it was reasonable Parking: lot available, in same plaza as Vons. $2.50 hand rolls during happy hr 5:30-7 everyday
(4)Jeff R.
Called to see if they have happy hour, they do! So I decided to check it out. No one was their tried to sit at bar, no happy hour at bar. Okay, I want some rolls. Hand rolls only, huh? Ordered two hand rolls average at best. I wonder why nobody is here.

Love this place. It's in a convenient location by my workplace and where I live. Usually come here after work to grab a drink. Some of my faves are the crunchy and sashimi roll. The sushi tastes super good and hey come in big portions too. Always my go to place when I'm craving sushi now.

This place is not any good and the ambiance of this place is not any better. This sushi place is tucked inside the Vons plaza. It is a small sushi joint and the inside of the place has one too many pictures and looks rundown and old. The menu is a bit of a mess. They have all these random rolls with tiny pictures and there is no description of what is inside the roll. Seriously, how can anyone know what is inside of the dish? Because of that, I ordered a spicy tuna, caterpillar, and dragon roll. The rolls were alright. They were over sauced, too ricey, and the quality of the fish was not good at all. We also ordered some nigiri for the table, which had WAYYYY too much rice in comparison to the fish. The fish also looked pretty old and was served pretty warm. We got the tempura as well which did not have a nice outside exterior. The batter was rather soggy. Meh. I did not enjoy this dish at all. I admit, they have a good happy hour. The prices for their drinks are good, but I wouldn't go to happy hour if their food isn't good either.

Loveeeeee this place!!! It's my local sushi spot, walking distance, the staff is very nice and friendly the food is amazing and I love their happy hour!!!

My family goes to Sushi Anza almost every week for 8 years! The prices are fair and the sushi is wonderfully delicious. They have everything for every type of eater - from rolls to the traditional sushi to cooked food. I can't rave enough how much we enjoy the place. You know that they are authentically Japanese and not the fake wanna be J restaurants because it's not all about making money but creating a sense of community with good food and good prices. They all work hard to make your experience as wonderful as the food. Favorite sushi place in Torrance.
(5)Lori S.
yum got the deluxe sushi dinner combo spicy tuna roll was my favorite great deal only $18
(4)Monica L.
I and my boyfriend reallyyy wanted to like this place. We live just across the street and loved the idea of having a go-to sushi take-out spot nearby. We wanted to like it so much that even after one of our take-out orders showed up with sashimi that looked a bit discolored and tasted even fishier (we ended up not trying the rest to be safe), we still went back and got another order a few weeks later. This time the fish was fresh but still mediocre flavors in the sushi and side dishes. Torrance has way better options.
(1)Earl U.
Great neighborhood restaurant. Nothing fancy but do things well. They have a happy hour menu but you always want to eat more than just handrolls beer and sake. There's an outstanding fried chicken that's really tasty not just battered and fried like most places. Family owned and operated so they need to do a good job. Lots of regulars...
(4)Nikki H.
I really enjoy the authenticity of Japanese sushi here and the ambience of the restaurant. I come often with friends who are on friendly terms with the chef - something I admire in small businesses. If you want real sushi, not the fusion crap with cream cheese and mango they add at chains, this is the place to go. There's a happy hour and they stay open late. The fish is always fresh and excellent quality. My last dinner we got a side of the sweet beans - a delightful dessert. A hidden gem.

First time trying over the weekend and I am sold! First of all, I like that this sushi joint is owned by Japanese. And even though the location was somewhat random and hidden, inside the restaurant was clean and cozy. Happy Hour daily from 5:30 pm to 7. They were very punctual with their opening time, because we had to wait at CVS next door until they opened. There was hot sake, two kinds of beers offered during Happy Hour as well as variety of hand rolls and some small side dishes. Hand rolls were priced nicely at $2.30 and they weren't cheap with the fish stuffing here so choose from spicy tuna, spicy salmon, salmon, salmon skin, yellow tail, spicy yellow tail, shrimp, albacore and shrimp tempura! Most people seemed to just order plate-FULL-of-hand-rolls here which is a smart choice. I was a bit disappointed as they didn't have toro or mirugai (my two favs) that night, but everything we ordered that night, which happened to be from regular items, were fresh! And yes, all I ask for at a sushi joint is that the fish is fresh as possible! My favorite that night was the sweet shrimp but their specialty rolls were good and big portioned as well. Add in friendly servers that checks up on your every so often to make sure we are doing okay? I am sold. Thanks Yelp for recommending this place! I will be back!
(3)Nikki S.
Little whole in the wall in a shopping center that serves fresh sushi with amazing Happy hour deals. 1.95 hand rolls during happy hours plus 4.50 for Large Hot Saki. I usually have the spicy tuna, spicy yellow tail and alboacore hand rolls everytime I am visting this spot. Neighboorhood GEM :-) with home feeling and great service.
(4)Jamie A.
Happy Hour daily from 5:30 pm to 7. *Note that they open at 5:30 * Large hot sake or large beer (Saporro or Asahi) for $4.50. Awesome deal! Hand rolls are really the way to go if you are there during HH. (I also prefer hand rolls as you aren't eating so much rice and get more fish.) Pick your choice, each is $2.30: - spicy tuna, spicy salmon, salmon, salmon skin, yellow tail, spicy yellow tail, shrimp, albacore and shrimp tempura Our server was really friendly and kinda funny. My friend and I are talky and loud, but everyone in Sushi Anza was cool and kind. The sushi chef seemed busy, but we greeted him on our way out and he was gracious. Don't forget thank your sushi master! Rolls, beer and sake came out to $33 for two! I couldn't complain. Nice place! Nice HH! Free, easy parking, too.

Solid neighborhood spot in Torrance for some legit Japanese. One reason that I like Sushi Anza a lot is that it is actually a Japanese-owned establishment! The usual here for me is the chirashi bowl. It's decently sized in terms of portion and priced right with a good variety of items. There's the usual like sweet shrimp and yellowtail, but there's also uni! Tough to find a place with uni for the price at Sushi Anza. Generally the quality is quite good. The fish is previously-frozen (like most places), but not to the point that the flavor's lost. There's also izakaya-type dishes, although a bit more expensive compared to other places. A fried soft shell crab will run close to $9, even though it's one of my favorite here! There's also sushi rolls, as well as a happy hour. During happy hour, which runs from 5:30pm to 7pm, some appetizer items like gyoza and edamame are under $3, while hand rolls are a little over $2. Of course, beer is included in the happy hour as well! Oh and another reason why I like Sushi Anza? Because it is Japanese-owned, they don't charge for hot tea :]

Total diamond in the rough! Super authentic. I've been coming here regularly for years (since it opened)...my taste buds can't get enough of this place. When I crave sushi, I come here. Total mom and pop place that feels like family. Super friendly service, awesome happy hour (until 7), cool special events (like sake tasting parties), and amazing traditional Japanese dishes (along with delicious Southern California twists on Japanese dishes). My kids also LOVE this place, especially their fish and chips (they use a special oil to fry the fish and make the French fries...really good) and desserts. Just thinking about this place makes me happy.
(5)Patricia K.
Came during happy hour. Had a large sapporo for $4.80 and hand rolls that were $2.30 each. Got the spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and yellowtail hand rolls. My favorite was the spicy tuna as there were actually chunks of tuna in it and the shrimp tempura had a sweet sauce that I enjoyed.

The hours! What's going on! Here they are as of 11/26/12. Mon: closed Tues-Fri: 1130-2; 530-midnight Sat: 12noon-2; 530-midnight Sun: 530-1030pm Happy hours: 530-7pm + You can't beat the price! + Decor! So fun! The atmosphere is a lot like Katana-ya ramen in SF, but the walls are definitely more colorful here. + Service: excellent! I've never had to wait and they are attentive and on top of water filling + Handrolls ($3.80 normally, $1.90 happy hour): Well, I'm no sushi expert but this is pretty decent. + Sashimi and ingredients are fresh + Wasabi: nice and spicy! + Parking and location: I went to Vons afterwards and tried to wander off the food baby. The parking lot is huge and you'll never have a problem with parking. - The Sunday happy hour is a different menu and does not have sushi, but has other little dishes like shumai and edamame and beer. Bummer, I came on a Sunday - Maybe I would say the presentation of the food could be more appealing, but it's really a non-issue if you are hungry. - I also like a LOT OF SAUCE on my super Americanized sushi, but this is your typical Japanese style, healthy sushi made for dipping in wasabi and soy sauce. When my dad asked me about the sushi, I told him that the wasabi is really good. He wasn't happy that I was such a non-connoisseur. If you're not a sushi expert you'll like this place just fine. Sushi Anza is something like a 3.5, but let's round up!
(4)George B.
You should definitely come here for their happy hour which is everyday from 5:30-7pm. Large beers are $4.50 instead of $7.00 and their handrolls are $2.30. According to prior reviews their handrolls were $1.90. I believe their handroll prices have gone up because their happy hour is now 7 days a week instead of Tuesdays to Saturdays. I uploaded a current picture of their happy hour menu. Sashimi portion and taste was good however they placed too much wasabi in their sushi. I wanted to try their Sashimi Roll but it was a little pricey ($16.00). I'll try their Sushi Tacos (3 for $9.90) another time. Service was good and happy hour prices are very affordable. Come for their cheap beers and handrolls and ask them to tame down the wasabi in the sushi.
(4)Hiro S.
As others said, they have cool happy hour (till 7pm) items - including Sapporo Beer (large bottle) for $4.50. When we got there, it was around 6:40pm, and I noticed most of families who were there before us were already or almost finished their meals and about to leave. After 7:00pm, there were more regulars or repeaters who knew what they wanted to order from the regular menu. Since my friend is a regular customer and knows the owner, I let him order most of the dishes while I had to order another shimesaba (vinegar marinated mackerel) as it was very good and one order wasn't enough. ;p This is much closer to my place instead of going all the way to Gardena or Sawtelle, their prices are reasonable, and it's got casual atmosphere (although not too loud as Shinsengumi where you cannot carry normal conversation without shouting to each other).
(4)Nico G.
I am not one to write a review, but this place sucked! The raw fish was warm, service was horrible, and couldn't help but feel they were discriminating on us- either because I had two toddlers with me or because I was Latina. Either way, they will never get my money again! We were seated only one other family (Asian) of three were eating. It took them approx. 10 mins. to simply give us a menu and water. I filled out my sheet, requesting an order of shrimp tempura it never came. Refills on drinks were horrible.
(1)Ms. Edna T.
4 stars for the HAPPY HOUR specials! $1.95 hand rolls! yay!
(4)Jay V.
The sevive at Sushi Anza was great! The waitress was charming and very positive and polite. Good service very important in running bussiness. At Sushi Anza good service was well met. However, the food was not so good. It tasted pleasant. Not the best Sushi ever but it was decent. The rolls were terible. They were very poorly made. VERY poorly made. Also I really wouldn't recomend getting their salad. It was not good at all.
(2)David P.
Visited this place with my gf last week and got decent service. I'm giving it a one star because the fish and seafood was not fresh at all. We had a bad case of food poisoning for a few days. Would definitely not return. Seafood and sushi is something a chef is supposed to put extra care into.
(1)Racheal W.
I've come here many times when I'm early for an appointment at the salon next door. On average, my sushi takes about 5-10minutes max to come out, the owners are super friendly and the sushi quality is great! I don't think I've ever paid more than $15 for multiple rolls and a drink as well. Definitely recommend to stop by for a quick lunch!
(5)Princess H.
I had heard all the good things about this place for a long time, but never tried until recently. That is because I had been under the impression that this place is a Sushi restaurant (and I am extremely difficult to please when it comes to Sushi.) One day, when my Japanese friends and I were planning a girls' night, one of us suggested that we go Sushi Anza on Friday. I have to admit that I reluctantly agreed at that time. Sushi Anza totally surprised me in a good way. It feels just like an authentic "Izakaya" (tapas bar) in Tokyo instead of a Sushi restaurant. Casual, inexpensive, extensive food/drink menu, friendly chef, prompt service, etc. Fried fish bone (Hone Sen) is highly recommended. I heard that one of the owner's hobbies is fishing. He knows fish. Tons of parking space as it is located in the plaza of a major grocery store and drugstore. Will go again.
(4)Deborah A.
Love this place!!! Found it by default, will be back whenever in Torrance (I live in San Diego) everything about it was great. YAY!!!
(5)Amanda L.
This place is almost hidden. Decent service and food was fresh, glad they open late. Loved the sushi and sashimi.
(5)Aimi O.
I came to this restaurant last night. I live close by, but had never heard of the place. It's a hole in the wall sushi restaurant with a 4 star rating on Yelp, so I thought it was going to be a pretty good experience. Nope! I left the restaurant very confused. The best thing about this place was the service. You gotta love Japanese customer service! This is the only reason that I gave it 2 stars. Otherwise, it would have been 1. We had ordered three rolls and various other sushi. The rolls came out first. They were huge, which would be a plus for some people, but it was very poorly constructed. I didn't have one piece that didn't fall apart. Also, the ingredients were not fresh. The avocado was browning and the quality of the fish was below mediocre. We had ordered the Dragon Roll because of the cool picture on the menu. It really did look like a dragon. When we received it, the presentation was sloppy and looked nothing like the picture. This wasn't a big deal, only a minor disappointment, but then I tasted it... I honestly love unagi and didn't think that you could go ever go wrong with ordering it. Man, I was totally wrong. I have never eaten one that didn't like but I couldn't eat it this one. It left a weird after taste too. The individual sushi that we ordered was yellowtail toro, salmon, ikura and tamago. The yellowtail toro was okay, but the ikura and tamago was not that good. The tamago was bland. I don't think that I would return to Sushi Anza. The quality of the sushi and the rolls tells me that the sushi chef isn't passionate about the food he puts out.
(2)Calvin L.
Very nice hole in the wall that no one really knows about. Thank goodness too! The place is quite small and can probably only seat 20-30 max. It looks really small on the outside and can look quite shady at night due to the locale (right next a smoke shop), but the area actually isn't bad or dangerous. The environment is quite nice. It's a very Japanese-y feel. There's several tables and a sushi bar. There's pictures of food everywhere and there's even some creative preserved fish bones about the counter. Good for anything from a chill casual meal to a more formal business meeting with its nice ambient atmosphere. Although the food is a little more expensive than what most people expect from sushi, it's worth it. The quality of the seafood is amazing! One thing that turned me off was the staff. Super nice and super quick on delivering food and drinks but it can be a little hard to communicate if you don't speak Japanese. I went tonight with a friend for happy hour and apparently they raised their hand rolls to $2.30. Just last week it was $1.90. So they either messed up or they raised their prices. :( But it's still worth it! From someone that has never tried Japanese food before to the authentic Japanese food connoisseur, I highly recommend this place.
(4)Ben P.
Very nice and friendly staff. The place is small but comfy. The sushi was marginal but good none the less. Very reasonable prices and convenient location.
(4)Lisa H.
Get the Salmon Avacado salad!!! Lots of salmon with lots of avocado - two of my favorite things! Happy hour hand rolls are great, only $2! It's a small place, very authentic, and service is always great. Love it!
(5)Koko A.
Okay, I figured I would give this place one more chance. Sometimes we all have our bad days, right? Wrong. It's so hard to give this place only two stars because the people there are so nice but the food is seriously lacking. I ordered 2 rolls to go. Got to the office, excited to chow down on some rolls and share with my fellow employee. Inside the To-Go box was a roll, ginger, wasabi and a small plastic container that looked like soy sauce....nope. It was a thick teriyaki sauce. WHAT THE H*LL! Same thing in the other box. I don't want sweet teriyaki sauce with my sushi, I want soy sauce so I can mix my wasabi in it. Failed me again! I won't be returning, not even for the friendly staff.

I called to let the owner know that I had food poisoning after eating their mussels. I wasn't asking for money or any sort of compensation but just to let him know. Instead of apologizing, he told me to show him a hospital bill as proof. I told him that as a human being and a person working in customer service, the first words out of his mouth should be out of concern for the customer. He told me that's not his job so talk to his insurance company and give them proof. I hope this place goes to hell.
(1)Eric - Jill K.
Hidden treasure in the South Bay. We had been looking for a comfortable spot where we could just kick back--not have to dress up, really--and still enjoy some great sushi. BLAM! We found it. Don't let the unoriginal name fool ya.

I've been wanting to try this place out after stumbling across it a few weeks ago and finally did the other day. I went for a late lunch so the place was pretty empty. The dining area is small and narrow so it's probably good that there weren't too many patrons during my visit. The space was decorated minimally with lots of Japanese characters written on paper placed on the wallsand a large flat screen t.v. at the far end of the restaurant which had Japanese news on but was translated into English which I had not seen before. After looking at the menu which seemed to contain a variety of traditional Japanese fare, I settled on the small Chirashi bowl which consisted of a variety of fish placed on a bowl of rice for about $10 and some change which is comparable to other sushi places. They serve a larger Chirashi bowl with the only difference being that they would add sea urchin. I asked my server if they could not add octopus and she said she would tell the chef and have him replace it with something else. I was served the traditional miso soup and had ordered some hot green tea. The soup was nothing extraordinary but the green tea was really soothing. My main plate looked great when it came out! There were pieces of yellow tail, tuna, shrimp, roe and sweet egg placed on top of my heaping bowl of rice. I always think the combination of colors really make a kind of nice floral effect with this particular dish. After a while of eating though, it seemed that there wasn't that much of a variety of fish as I've had at other places. I also started wondering what replaced the octopus because there wasn't double pieces of anything so they probably didn't replace the octopus. I do admit, I was stuffed at the end of my meal but I surmised it was most likely due to the large amount of rice that is served. All in all though, I enjoyed my experience. The environment was cozy and my server was attentive enough. Albeit, I was one of the only tables being served so we'd have to see what it would be like when the place is packed. I would come back again to try some of the other dishes because the price is reasonable and they do have a variety of dishes available. So for now, I'll give the place 4 Stars. It's a good local neighborhood eatery to get your sushi on!
(4)Sandra T.
I read most of the reviews about this place and wanted to give it a try...and like it! It didn't happen....I ordered the Anza Roll and the Sushi Burrito for about $21 to go ....uhhh not worth it at all. It took quite a while to make and the place was fishy and stuffy inside. End result: The roll was sloppy. It fell apart no matter how I tried to eat it. The Sushi Burrito was interesting. It was pretty good with the tuna and crab mixture. For "just okay sushi"...I wouldn't come come back.
(3)Diana P.
We went here last night. We had a group of 14 people. 6 kids and 8 adults. The place is small, the service was decent and the food was okay. They didn't have a lot of choices when it came to rolls and the chef didn't roll them very well so most of rolls fell apart when we picked them up.
(3)Sara R.
I love it!! First time here and the service was so personable. I just moved to area and I can't be happier to have this right next door. My name is Rose I don't know there names but thank you try the Gyoza ! Best saude ever !!!!!
(5)Angie L.
The decor on the walls is pretty fun, but the food is only a tiny bit better than alright. I think I would return for happy hour since they seem to have a lot of popular items for a reasonable price during that time. Tried the caterpillar roll, but they overdid the avocado and skimped out on the eel. The spicy tuna hand roll was just OK. It wasn't mindblowing but satisfied a hankering for spicy tuna. The quality of the fish was not bad. We also got an order of the wings, which was fried well, but the mayo-sauce was not very good, the hot sauce was a better choice. I'm thinking there are better options in the South Bay, but this seems like a casual place for small local get-togethers, maybe even family dining.
(3)Kelly D.
Came after the lunch rush. Huge portions and waitress a real pro. Came back for happy hour rolls, but don't like the seaweed soggy (too much rice).
(3)Miriam M.
The whole place smelled like fish, not in the regular way a sushi place smells, but more in a stinky kind of way. Everything we ate had a really fishy taste, again, not in a good way. Won't be going back :-/
(1)Stacey B.
It's alright.
(2)Jerard C.
Took my family here for dinner. The restaurant itself is in a small neighborhood strip mall. It looks quaint, inside the walls are decorated with old mummified fish, which I found more suitable for a museum rather than a restaurant where I am eating. The workers are Japanese and pleasant, although we did have to ask for things twice. The biggest reason why I only gave 2 stars is the quality of the food. We ordered the spicy tuna rolls, the spicy tuna hand rolls, and the karage chicken. The tuna was brown, the seaweed was old, the rice was soggy, and the roll itself was packed loose and very sloppy. The chicken was undercooked and tasted like a it was flavored with a dish rag. Although the staff was pleasant. We won't be back again.
(2)Haydee V.
It's all about the Agedashi Tofu. I'm probably not only spelling but saying that incorrectly, but they always bring out a nice hot bowl for me to murder at Sushi Anza, so I must be saying it correctly enough. Then comes the boyfriend's favorite - the simple spicy tuna roll. It tastes delicious and fresh every time we come (some places douse the tuna with a sriracha shower to hide the lack of freshness). The specialty rolls, sushis, sashimis, and the whole menu is pretty spot on. On one visit I brought my sister and she had the craving for fish and chips (yes, they have that as an option) and when it came out, it would've made an Englishman cry, it was that good. (I imagined a shirtless, crying David Beckham who needed a hug, just in case you needed to know.) The best part about this place, though (besides the food), is the service. They're always really friendly here. And we love Kaaz, the sushi chef (I'm sure that's not his full name and sushi chef is not nearly as important or venerable enough a title for him) and Sushi Anza owner. He is awesome, friendly and you can really tell he loves what he does when you taste his food. Yum to the yum.

Good sushi, good prices, good service. The place is small but clean and has a homey feel. I love the tsotchkes on the walls. I could see myself becoming a regular here if I lived closer.

This is my second time at Anza Sushi and the selection is massive, unusal, traditional, fusion, home style and sake selection very good. Suggest the Sushi Burrito, Sushi Taco(not octobus), ELL salad and Sample platter to start. Or just point at the pictures on the wall. I like the place and will be going back soon to try out the other stuff posted on the wall.

Always came here during my high school days. Really cheap sushi and above average quality. If you ever have a sushi fix in Torrance and feel a little light on the wallet, I definitely would choose Sushi Anza over Sushi Boy (rofl). They have happy hour specials in which hand rolls are $1.50 (they are freaking huge!) The only thing that brought it down to 4/5 was that they have really funky hours.

I decided to give this place a try since I was getting a pedicure next door. Service was good and the happy hour prices are great although limited. Fish quality was decent but my review is only for the happy hour items. Based on that I may have come back to try other menu items, but after finding ants crawling on my table and along the wall rail next to me I decided against it. Great staff, good prices, and decent food does not outweigh bugs in my opinion.

Sushi Anza -- better than what I've expected!! I'm such a big junkie for "izakaya food" and shied away from this place at first ( thanks to it's name)since I just didn't want to be eating sashimi, sushi, handrolls .. you get the point. This place offered a variety of other dishes and can't beat the happy hour prices! Prices are decent & staff super nice. Definitely will be going back!

This place is a hidden gem. Wonderful service and amazing happy hour special. Delicious food. This place is awesome.

For the price the happy hour is not bad but the quality of sushi is poor compared to ra and hoka hoka sushi. the hand roll also falls apart on you. Even though this place is cheap I would pay the couple extra bucks and go somewhere with a bit more quality.

I come here for happy hour once a week. I love the 1.90 hand rolls or 14 piece sushi combo. The price is so reasonable and the sushi quality is not compromised. Don't let the whole in the wall shopping center fool you, Sushi Anza is the most reasonable sushi place in town.

My husband and I love Anza Sushi. We eat this at least every other week.. We're probably over-impressed because we thought we'd never try this place driving by. It's in a strip mall in the corner and the name is named after the street it's on... how boring. We're used to going to Sushi restaurants that have Japanese names that we don't even know what it means.... But I read some good reviews here and I really wanted to eat sushi and I happened to be at the CVS next door so I gave it a try. Honestly, the service is HORRIBLE.. but the food is really good. I took out a star for the bad service. Sad thing is, they don't mean to give you bad service, they're just really slow... Everyone is in slow motion there. The sushi man is an older gentlemen who moves very slow and half of the time looks like he doesn't know there is an order waiting for him... And the waitress lady didn't speak much English so that was a challenge when I asked her what rolls I should try... We've only done take outs since the sushi bar looks too small for our family of 4 with a car seat and all that... So I can't say what the dine-in experience would be like. All I know is, when I went there without ordering ahead, even though they had like 5 customers in the whole restauarant, I stood there waiting for the order for like 35 minutes from when I ordered. Thank God the food tasted awesome when I got home!!! We never like the rainbow roll but it's really fresh and tasty here. Their crunch roll is awesome too. Their spicy scallop roll is really spicy which we love. They have this Anza burrito which has spicy tuna, crab meat, cucumber, hot sauce, and rice, wrapped with rice paper and you dip it in tartar sauce and hot sauce... It sounds strange but it's actually really good.. Their sushi is of course really fresh too. If you're ordering ahead, give yourself at least an hour (hehe) but you'll like the result!

I came here with seven of my Japanese friends and this place served very fresh sushi. The thing that I like at this place is that the nigiri sushi is thick compared to other sushi places that I have been. Very generous nigiri and good price for this kind of top quality. Other sushi places have small nigiri with not so generous fish on top of it. Could it be that the Chef's hand is bigger than any other sushi chefs??? :) The temaki (hand rolled) was also good, I ordered mostly all temakis on the Happy Hour list and it was awesome. The yellow tail (hamachi) temaki is the best in my opinion but I could be biased since I am a hamachi lover. Recently they have extended the Happy Hour day to Saturday from 5.30pm - 7.00pm. Temaki is priced $1.80 and a large bottle of Jibiiru (Japanese Beer) is only $3.50. This is my second time here and will definitely go for more.

This is the best sushi I've been able to find in the South Bay since my time traveling through Japan. They have fantastic Nigiri with thick pieces of fish. Their rolls are delicious and they offer many different options. They also have a fairly large selection of sake. The sushi chef and his wife own the restaurant. I recommend sitting at the bar and getting his opinion on your sake choice. If you're ever in the South Bay and craving sushi, I highly recommend this spot. Their prices are usual for sushi but you get better sushi here than other places. Their happy hour is great. Less than $4 for sake and beers and hand rolls are $1.80.

Good pricing and the chef is hands down an awesome dude.

This place was awesome! I love when I find great little hole-in-the-wall spots! The quaint atmosphere was perfect! They have a great happy hour...$1.80 hand rolls! Also the regular menu has good prices too. We were very pleased with the quality of the fish, as well as the great selection. The octopus was fabulous...tender, not chewy!! I will be a regular at Sushi Anza now!

Not a bad deal for decent quality sushi. Quaint decor makes this a really comfortable neighborhood restaurant

Best Sushi-place in the area if you like quality food. The energy there is lovely, decorated with so much taste. The owner puts his heart in that place and they have the best Miso soup and tea (which is included). The Sushi melts like butter in your mouth. Highly recommended!

Love this place. Great sushi and very reasonably priced! One of the best I have experienced!
(5)Ru C.
i love my salmon bowl there and the food serves fairly fast! they have interesting stuff there too! like sushi burrito...and fish..and chips? lol the service is always good and i like that i almost never have to wait to be seated too!

This is our favorite local Sushi Bar. The fish is always fresh, the service good, and the prices fair. Totally a no frills, hole-in-the walls sushi joint. But what more do you really want.

I returned to this place again. They have a happy hour (dinner) from Monday thru Friday until 7:30pm. They have very extensive menu selection but happy hour only applies to small selection on the menu. Happy hour hand roll sushi was good but seaweed (nori) was not crisp. I like mine crispy. They can't even toast the nori for me? Towards the end, food started to come out slower and slower even though the place was not even packed. Considering all the alcohol and food we had, it was a good experience. Came out to about 30 dollars per person including tip and tax.

This is a little gem of a hole-in-the wall that my family has gone to probably 6-7 times in the last year. As Bri W mentioned, the $1.80 hand roll happy roll is a great value. Atmosphere is very quaint. They have photos of sushi and dishes repeated around the room. The Dragon roll looks like a dragon. The also have mummified fish attached to the wall, and one fish even has a cigarette in its mouth. As you walk in, the kitchen is situated to your left, and the chef's peak out of a pass window. They have a flatscreen TV on the back wall that is constantly tuned to a Japanese channel. We watched a Japanese fishing show w/ lots of weird Japanese consumer product ads. My daughter usually orders the fried tofu (great sauce), the crunch roll, the umago (scrabbled egg sushi) and the gyoza appetizer. The fried food comes straight out of the fryer, and can be scalding-hot. We tried the fried oyster, which came with 6-7 oysters (fresh!) with the tonkatsu sauce (like A1 but not as sour) and a nice salad ($6.80). Overall quality of the sushi is good. For the price, it is value. I've had better yellowtail and toro elsewhere (explains the 3-star rating - A-OK), but usually and much higher prices. Last night, they had 1 waitress and the place was 1/2 filled. She was attentive and polite, but she was spread a bit thin. My hair cutter also visits (and recommends) this place quite often, and says its opened late (2am?). She says the owner/sushi chef will sit down w/ her group, chat away, and keeps the sushi coming. Its located in the corner of a mini mall, so there is plenty of free parking.

I love this little place. Happy hour prices are bomb, pretty much half off. Fish is fresh fresh fresh- so good.

You'll have to look hard to find this place. Tucked in the corner by the market, you will see a small sign Sushi Anza. Outside, this place looks small, but inside has ample seating for sushi bar. What makes this place standout is the fresh sashimi. Prices are a reasonable $13.50 for the sushi plate. What this place isn't is a about is fusion sushi. If you want that, look elsewhere. Here you will find traditional sushi prepared by skilled japanese chef.

I've been searching for good sushi at a reasonable price in the South Bay, and I have found it. The secret to good sushi is the freshness of the fish, and the fish here is as fresh as anywhere except the highest-priced restaurants. Where else can you get sweet shrimp sushi complete w/ fried heads for $5? Hamachi is buttery as it's supposed to be. If you don't want to order a la carte, they have combo plates for around $15. I'm surprised that this restaurant is not more crowded than it is, but it is hidden in the corner of a strip mall and it doesn't really have much atmosphere. But if the food is where it's at for you, this is a place worth checking out.
(5)Frank H.
Food is decent with an extended wait time, some sushi rolls are better than others. It can be pricy, so be prepared to shell out $60 (not including taxes and tips) for dinner for 2 plus a large beer.

3 Stars for a person like me who eats Sushi once in a blue moon. We ate here 12-27-10 for dinner. Why 3 Stars you may ask? My friend Dennis took me here for the first time and we like eating Calamari or Squid but for some reason they don't have neither on MY FIRST visit. YIKES! Their fried Octopus was the BOMB though, at least it's not like KFC who specializes in Chicken and then they will tell you they ran out of chicken? You know you have experienced that before. i would prolly fall off the floor cracking up if i hear this place they ran out of Sushi. The A+ about this place is definitely their HAPPY HOUR and the the bom-ball frozen yogurt next door, in which the next place i am about to YELP. My friend said they have a good price for a large order of Sushi take out and their Tempura is pretty good. Last, if you don't know how to use Chopsticks, the waitress will give you a Chopstick tool to make it easier for you to get used to but then there's obviously forks to use - it all depends how hungry you are. Thanks for reading my reviews - in which i can always change the rating if they have Calamari or Fried Squid on my second visit. "i shall return".

My husband and I often come here during their happy hour since we live down the street. This place has pretty good quality sushi for a cheap price. How can you beat the $1.80 hand rolls during happy hour! We are not big drinkers, but we do eat a lot and our total bill was $30 which included 4 hand rolls, potato croquettes, and a sushi combination plate.

this place is always a good bet for no wait, decent prices, and a quiet atmosphere. the sushi menu is basic, and most of the fish i've tried has been fresh and tasty. however, the whitefish ngiri was a little off (almost had to spit it out). in any case, good in a pinch...
(3)Taeil K.
This place is great local sushi. If you want a fair price on raw fish look no further. I enjoyed my time here and Sushi Boy might be a little cheaper, but this place got some good stuff. You've got the entire Pavilions parking lot so getting here and finding space is easy, and this place gets an extra star for being run by actual Japanese people. Most places I've been to are Korean owned. I don't know much about the drink selection but they do serve saki here...
(4)Jayme H.
Sushi Anza looks like a hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant but don't be fooled by its appearance. The rolls are of good quality and the price is reasonable compared to other sushi joints. I wasn't expecting much from Sushi Anza but I definitely recommend going here.
