It took me a year to find this place but I'm glad I did. The food is amazing, I love the carnitas, it's unique and amazing. I always get the burrito if I'm feeling spendy the nachos are really great. I always get a baby burrito for my kids and it's big enough that they can split it. I'm trying really hard not to go every day.

Breakfast burritos are great! Usually get the chorizo con huevo (eggs and chorizo) that comes with rice, beans, cabbage salad, cheese and salsa. So good! I should just eat half of it side it's so big but I eat all of it, get super full but totally worth it. I also love the shrimp burrito on Fridays.

Thiis in my opinion the best taqueria in Sunnyvale. Thsi littke hidden gem has been open for over 40 years. with that being said, this place has the old school growing up in san francisco , going to the mission and eat a tasty burrito feel. The carne asada , carnitas and barbacoa are all worth mentioning. The have menudo and pozole freshly made on Saturday and Sundays.... This is what I consider supporting your local restaurants!

Not good... Not good at all. Chips were not crispy as if left in the open for a long time. After all the reviews I'm reading, I wonder if I came at a bad time (maybe at closing? It was 8 pm though) and the food was lukewarm and tasted mediocre. Tortilla was something I could get off the shelf. Not good....Not good at all. Quality: 2 Service: 2 Cost: 3

Rating based on huevos rancheros and service. My new favorite huevos rancheros--plenty of thick, flavorful tomato sauce, eggs done just right, beans of course, tortillas on the side are thick with just a little toastiness in addition to being steamy. Our server was especially helpful and friendly going out of her way to make sure we had what we wanted and were happy. Tip: Ask for a dash of milk for your coffee if powered whitener isn't your thing. No demerits for a tippy chair and DIY-looking electrical work in light fixtures. Take it as part of the ambiance!

I've been coming here for years now after recommended by a family friend. The people that work here are incredibly kind and friendly. I've never felt the place feeling unwelcome. The guy who makes the burritos is an amazing cook!!! They usually sell out earlier on in the day, but their tamales here are to die for!!! Always a treat if you can get them! I'll be going to get my chicken burrito fix fairly soon :)

Pure authentic Mexican. Menu on the wall, chorizo, menudo, and an attached small grocer. Nothing more authentic than that. Food's great, come here every week. Most items under $8, the specials $5.

My favorite burrito in the world. If you are in SV, you need to find this little place and buy into all the hype. It's worth it. The Burrito... Homemade flour tortillas, loaded with slow cooked meat of your choice, chopped right in front of you. I love the pastor or a carnitas/chile verde combo. Super simple with rice, beans, cheese and a killer pico de gallo made with cabbage which gives an awesome crunch. No need for sour cream or guacamole here, although both are available on request. If there on a weekend, make sure to treat yourself to the menudo. Parents took my brother and I here back in 80's, and I have never stopped. Not a fancy place by any means, but excellent food, great prices and very friendly staff. I swear I would put this place up against any Bay Area taqueria or "gourmet" taco truck. Salud Mercado La Torre...I'm all in for life.

Refused to allow me to dine outdoors with my Service Animal. I requested , I showed my Service Animal registration. female hostess refused. And then the hostess said to me. "get out of the way of my other customer", as a Hispanic women walked in and then the hostess Started speaking in Spanish to the women customer. Against the law !!!

I've been enjoying Mexican food here for literally a couple decades since I was a kid and have seen the place expand and change. The Mexican food here is still the best around though! There is a special every day of the week for a deal. Why would anyone want fast food when you can enjoy some authentic wholesome Mexican food for the same price if not less? Two homemade shredded beef tamales with rice, bean and salad for $6.50 is pretty unbeatable! They also have a little mini market to pick up some basic Mexican goodies like hot sauce and homemade tortillas. You can even get some horchata mix for home too! I try to stop through here when I'm in the area for some Mercado goodness.

I would give less stars if I could. Service is not good to say least. Extra charges for everything. Offer specials but don't give them. No ice and no cheese at least once and not caring that customer is unhappy. Been coming here for years. Will NOT be returning ever. Recommend they get an attitude adjustment and supply their restaurant with food in order to run probperly.

A good deal for the quality of the food and amount received I usually rotate the types of meat I like on my burrito but I always am pleased Only one star off today since my chip back only had 5 chips and no salsa for some reason :(

This place is pretty good. Sometime it's a bit salty but overall good taste. Reasonable price. Be careful sometimes it has a lot of fat... Which some ppl might be perfectly fine for most but me, not good. Ppl are nice.

I got a regular burrito here after seeing four stars and I can tell you with an absolute certainty that this place doesn't deserve such a high rating. It was absolutely the worst burrito I ever had in my life. Not only does it taste bad but it was also extremely expensive. $7 for a shitty burrito? I would rather go to Taco Bell and get much cheaper and tastier burrito than come back to this place. I have no clue why so many people gave this place so many stars. My guess is that there's a serious yelp review manipulation going on here.

Hate to say it, but not a good food! Carne asada is not tasty at all, expensive food for the quality

  • Tanner L.

I come here about once a month for a burrito to go and have always been satisfied, nothing phenomenal, but always pretty good. I give it 3.5 stars. But after dining in their restaurant and ordering something different than a burrito, I was miffed with the sub par service and the lukewarm food that It was a 1 star experience, not sure how this could even happen, the place is so small and it was not even busy. After waiting about 20 minutes, the food arrived and the nice waiter came and told us the Taquito's we ordered were not really Taquito's, but really Flautas, do we still want them? After waiting 20 minutes and serving lukewarm food, you then ask if we now want the Flauta's? I don't doubt on any given day, the food and service would be great, but not on this day.

I went to this place due to the 4* but it was not good and expensive ($7 regular buritos). There must be a lot of friends writing reviews on Yelp and this is sad. The Buritos was plain tasteless. If you really liked it, please visit other mexican places to compare! But the real turn off is they chop the meat on a wood cutting board. And it was not dense maple wood. Wood Cutting Board are banned from restaurant kitchen by FDA 1999 Food Code. 4-101.17 : "wood may not be used as a FOOD-CONTACT SURFACE". How can restaurant still use wood cutting board : this is unsanitary. Pass this place.

This is one of the few Mexican places that has stood the test of time. Since 1980? Interesting that it's right next to a Mexican restaurant but i guess the symbiosis of restaurant next to taqueria. It started as a tortilla factory and now a great market and eatery. Excellent tacos and burritos as you'd expect with good tortillas to start. The Jalisco style birria ks also solid and you can buy meats by the pound. Good place all around

I've been looking for a good Mexican restaurant to eat at ever since I came back to Mexico last year. After having some mad cravings for pozole last night, I logged onto yelp and tried to find a place that serves it. I found this place and it seemed promising. My friend and I went today and it was absolutely delicious. It seems like they only serve pozole during the weekends so I wasn't able to satisfy my craving but I'll be back during the weekend! I chose the enchilada combo. You can choose to have it topped off by cheese or by a type of meat such as chicken or beef. I chose beef. My friend ordered a milanesa chicken combo. So in case you don't know how it works, you go into the store and you order on the right. If you want a drink then you can get one out of the refrigerator and then you pay on the left side. Then you can go and sit where the tables are and someone will bring your food over. The cooks speak mostly Spanish but you can get by by English fine. The food portions were great! The combos come with a side of beans, rice, fresh tortillas, and sort of a coleslaw or salad. You also get chips and salsa. Personally I I would have liked this to be spicier but it was still good. The enchiladas were filled with cheese and topped with very tender beef. The beans were quite nice and had a very nice clean taste at the end. I was seriously having flashbacks to when I was living in Mexico. I think one of the best parts was the fact that the tortillas are so fresh and delicious. If you want more tortillas just go up to the counter and ask for more. They will bring it to your table later. After I came back from Mexico I was always so disappointed with all the tortillas by all on the Mexican restaurants My friend's milanesa was empanizada ( breaded and fried ). It was very nice and moist and topped with salsa. He he cleaned his plate completely! Overall a very pleasant experience and I would recommend it for people who want some authentic and delicious Mexican food. If you're expecting to sit in a beautifully decorated restaurant then this is not your thing, but if you're looking for a quick place to grab some delicious and affordable food then come around to Mercado La Torre!

I chose this place based off of the 4 stars, order a carne asada burrito, and was really disappointed. The size of the burrito was good, the flavoring was unique, but the meat was extremely fatty. I had to spit out three bites of "carne asada" when I couldn't chew through it. Normally a Mexican restaurant/supermarket is pretty good, but not this time.

    i like their lengua taco.

My wife and I are both Mexican, and although this may not make me an authority on Mexican cuisine, I think I have enough experience to say with some confidence that this place, is the best taqueria I've ever been to in the U.S. , and I've been to quite a few. My family has been coming here for more than 20 years. Don't get put off by it's a "hole in the wall" appearance, and don't look for fancy decor, but I still think it deserves 5 stars because it is tops in it's class. The food is authentic and well prepared with quality ingredients. There is seating for a small lunch crowd and you stand in line to place your order, choosing from an assortment of ingredients in front of you. If you want to brag about burritos as big as your thigh, or if you have a hankering for chain restaurant quality food, go someplace else. This place serves high quality and authentic portions. I am also grateful for the fact that they are careful when trimming meats, as there is usually very little fat and gristle as in most other places.

Great little find, it's in a small grocery shop. I pretty much tried a little of everything, so I went to town and ordered the menu. Pretty much made to order, everything was well seasoned and packed very well since it was for to go. Wish I remembered exactly what was ordered, but nothing to complain about, so ill be back for sure!

If you are in search of REAL homecooked Mexican food, this is the best place in Sunnyvale. They have the best salsas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, menudo. I could go on and on. TRY THIS PLACE! The only minor draw back is that there are no waiters, but for the price, you will LOVE it! This can easily become one of your favorite comfort food joints! My family and I have been coming to eat here since I was about 10 years old! The owners are great, believe in good qulity product, fresh food, and humble & courteous customer service.

  • Rajiv S.

Authentic. So authentic that it's connected to a market that also does counter take away service. Salsa is great. Food is great. Service is pleasant. Horchata is good. They have TVs that play soccer and baseball games for you fans. A solid, authentic experience for the price. Just don't expect many frills and hoopla, it's connected to a market which usually rings the authenticity bell for me.

It has occurred to me that I have been coming here for almost 30 years and they consistently have the BEST burritos I have ever eaten! My fave is the carnitas.

Pretty disappointed with Mercado La Torre. My friend hyped it up so much and after reading favorable reviews on Yelp, I was ready for some good burritos. Unfortunately, this was not to be. When I walked in, I saw them making this HUGE burrito for the customer right before and I was like "Now that's a burrito!" I was so excited when it was my turn and I sidled up to the counter to put in my order. I ordered a carne asada burrito and watched the gentleman make it right before me. After he made it, I just saw the sad little burrito in his hands and asked him "What kind of burrito did that guy order?" He answered that the guy ordered a super burrito. Ok, mental note to self, order that next time. I also got a chicken burrito for my friend. One of the things I didn't like about this place was that they didn't grill the meat that went into the burritos. I saw them take the chicken and carne asada out of simmering pots on the stove. The chicken was okay, but the carne asada was dry and very overcooked. The cheese they used is a dry, mexican style cheese that had the consistency of Kraft Parmesan cheese. It didn't melt and didn't even mix in well with the burritos. All in all, I've definitely tasted better and if I ever crave a decent burrito close by, I can head to the place next door to Mercado La Torre.

There is goodness in Sunnyvale! Stopped in here with the family before heading back to the OC. I went with the Pozole and I am glad I did! Ever have one of those meals that even when you know you are full you just gotta keep eating because you just don't know when you will have it again?? Yup, it was one of those moments. Everything is fresh and homemade and the service can't get any better. This isn't a fancy smancy place...but if you don't know any better those are the best places! Looking forward to coming here again when I visit.....

  • Mary Jane S.

I only come here for their Al Pastor or Pollo Nachos. ...These Nachos are seriously.. " off tha hook" ... they use real hot melted cheese ( not shredded like at Taqueria Garcia's on Fairoaks and El Camino Real ) then its topped with refriend beans AND rice ( never had rice on my nachos.. but it was pretty darn good ) and all the other fixings -- salsa fresca, sour cream, guacamole and lime juice .. etc... Its really a lot of food but extrememly delicious and authentic Mexican Fast Food. Thier dining area does seem a little blight but it doesnt bother me, I'm too busy eating my Nachos to care. Viva Nachos!

I love this place!!! Mercado La Torre is a family owned taqueria who beat out all the other nearby Mexican restaurants---- Hands down. It's been my boyfriend's favorite for a long time and I now know why he always orders extra tacos to go for later. There I've had some of the most delicious tacos and burritos of carne asada, chicken, carnitas and chile verde. Their Mexican rice, consistently, is cooked perfectly. I'm still trying to figure out how they make their red salsa. It's so addicting!! They give you a bag of chips and salsa with your order, but I now add a pint of salsa to go with my orders. Yes, it's a hole in the wall taqueria, but it's a MUST TRY.

  • LaLande S.

I came here for lunch. The place looks run down, not dirty per say, but I was a little apprehensive. The menu was a list of meat, no prices, so I ordered an al pastor burrito. It came with a bag of chips with a cup of salsa in the bag. The salsa wasn't refrigerated. Hmm :/ Ate the burrito at work and it was nothing special. I won't be back.

Family owned and operated. They make everything: tortillas, salsa, meats... everything! And they do it well. You want ambiance? Go to El Torito, gringo. These guys just make great Mexican food. On Saturdays and Sundays only, they have table service and fresh tacos at lunch time - and I mean FRESH tacos! They don't make the tortillas until after you order. Other times, it's order at the counter, pay at the register, and eat in the room next door. But that's okay, because their carnitas is crispy on the outside while juicy on the inside; their chicken is moist and tender and flavorful; and their tortillas and salsa are fresh and tasty. I cannot recall having anything here that I didn't like, except the menudo, which I don't typically like anyway (it was too salty for me). Their chips and salsa are usually a hit at parties and whatnot. The people are friendly; the food is good. Wide variety of choices for food and drinks. If you like authentic, home-made tortillas, they are just to the left of the cash register. Get the ones in the plain, unmarked bag.

Mercado La Torre is delicious, they have never done me wrong, I love their breakfast chorizo burrito and for lunch, I usually get carne asada or carnitas burrito, simply delicious!

Hmm.. Not what I was expecting. I tried a steak burrito -- No sour cream or guacamole :( If I do go back, I'll make sure to request these next time. The steak meat was soo dry and didn't seem very fresh, which didn't go well with the dry rice either! The meat for the pork burrito is cut upon order. This meat was more tender then the steak. Not super clean place. Best for take out!

As I approached La Torre I noticed the Yelp sticker on the front window. Hummm, bet this place is gonna be good... I went here last weekend with my sister and got a very good bowl of menudo. Along with the menudo they brought us a basket with plenty of chopped onion, lime slices and a hefty portion of oregano. As we waited for our food to arrive there was a guy making us fresh tortillas right there on the spot. Got myself a diet coke and I was good to go. Before our meal arrived the waitress brought us some chips and salsa, I didn't really care for the salsa but it was alright for a different taste. Not sure what type of chile they used for the salsa but I ate it any way. Gotta have salsa with my chips. My bowl of menudo was just the way I like it...plenty of hominy and plenty of menudo with every spoonful. One side of La Torre is a small tienda (store) and the other side is a small restaurant as well as a tortilleria. I didn't really look at the menu because I already knew I was only going to order a bowl of menudo. I think the menu selection is small judging by the small 8x11 double sided menu that we got. Fine by me since all I wanted was a good bowl of menudo. Well, well...found a new place to get a good bowl of menudo.

It had been awhile since I had my chicken burrito fix so I ventured along this establishment. So here's how it goes. It's 1/2 supermarket 1/2 sit-down laid back restaurant. If you want to eat in, take a seat and a server will be there to take your order. If you want to take the food "to go", simply order on the 1/2 supermarket side and you'll be on your way. I decided to eat in and was given free chips and salsa. The salsa was okay but I prefer a little bit more heat. I went with the standard chicken burrito (chicken, beans, rice, salsa/cilantro). A quick breakdown of what I look for in a good burrito... A good chicken burrito has to have a decent amount of chicken. If every bite I take has more beans and rice than chicken, then i'm not happy. This burrito had plenty of chicken so, they pass test # 1. Test # 2 is the overall flavor and texture of the chicken. The chicken was good but not as flavorful as other places. The texture was fine but could have been a little softer. But it wasn't overly salted so I'll give them credit for that. One quick thing I wanted to mention. When you "dine in", it's sort of weird b/c the waitress or server, which one is she? Anyways, that's the problem. She took our order and I asked for some water but realized moments later that others were just getting up and getting water from the tank. So it's sort of laid back environment but why then do I need a waitress? She never refilled our waters and pretty much was MIA. When I literally walked by her to get more napkins and other things, she didn't even flinch. I'm not knocking her but I was just utterly confused as to what her role was. A bus boy or waitress or neither? Nonetheless, they serve standard burritos. Not bad at all. But they're not going to make you drool like a hot mama.

definitely authentic food! i had the carne asada burrito and it was hella bomb!!! AND they know what type of cheese to put in a mexican burrito, if you must have it! QUESO FRESCO! never seen that before! definitely a good try!

I've driven by this place quite a few times and never realized it was there! I'm glad I saw it because I was very happy with the pollo burrito. It was so huge my husband and I shared it. Loved the slaw-type mix they put on the burrito, the cabbage stays nice and crunchy (unlike lettuce which wilts and gets all soggy in your burrito). The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it needed a little salt. Otherwise, I was very satisfied! I will be coming here again.

If you like clean food, don't go here! I wrote a review on this place back in Nov of 2008. I have never returned nor will I recommend this place! I ordered $40 worth of food to go. When I opened my food up, there was a big, fat, dead cockroach laying belly side up on top of my re-fried beans. Their kitchen is not clean enough to still be in business!

I was rolling down Evelyn when I spotted Mercado La Torre . They have a sign that says " The Best Burrito In Sunnyvale" with that claim I had to stop and try it out LOL. Its a hole in the wall . I walked in and its an Old School Mexican Market / Restaurant. I asked them about the Burritos and the owner proudly says its the best in Sunnyvale. So I ordered the Al Pastor Burrito . They assembled it with Rice , Beans, Pork,Cilantro and Onions . It came with Chips and Salsa. I paid for my meal and sat down . The Owner came over with a cup of Horchata and gave it to me . That was nice of him ,that's one of my favorite drinks. The Burrito was good it was mostly Pork with a light layer of ingredients in it very clean and savory. The Horchata was like Mothers Milk it was delightful. They had a cool Copper Calderon behind the counter. Ill return they make a good Burrito

Me gusto La Torre in Sunnyvale! Simply put when they write Best Burrito in the South Bay on the window I have high expectations...who wouldnt unless you cant read! Which is exactly why I held my breath as my 3yr old buddy made his first visit to a real taqueria...of course he is absolutely finicky as Im sure you all understand! For a minute it didnt look like there was a single hope. But as I watched his Daddy work some of his magic persuasion (I helped a little by saying YUM) alot...oddly enough I found it was ez to be sincere (freshly made tortillas & ingredients incl meats & veggies) he ventured into the wonderful world of authentic taqueria burrito (bean & queso) eating!! No turning back now "Best" burrito means just that..Yeah hurray you did it...by golly Dora we have a true convert on our hands...from all the bad bad fast food gimmick joints that plague our society like cigarettes another young one saved from clowns & toys to get them to eat there! From the mouth of the picky picky 3yo innocent..YUMM!!!!

I noticed a few people mentioning they don't have sour cream or guacamole in their burritos. They do, per request. This place has the best carnitas I've ever had and they make their burritos so huge that even I am satisfied with a single super burrito for lunch and I am a HUGE eater. The carne asada there isn't too good. Stick with the carnitas, chicken or the chile verde. It's a hole in the wall, but it's well worth your money and time to visit for lunch. Yes, it's located by the planned parenthood and is in my neighborhood. Also, people mentioned they aren't friendly. They are very friendly and speak Spanish to me mixed with English. I have a small command on Spanish, but words I don't know, I learn. Coming here is like mini-Spanish class and I love it.

You know me I love Mexican food this has to be one of the best in Sunnyvale I've been coming to this restaurant for several years now and have always enjoyed the food. They also have the Menu do on Saturdays so if you have little hangover on Friday pick up a bowl it's pretty good I've had some and it's definitely better than the stuff you find in the can. What I like about this restaurant is it has not only food you can sit and enjoy but you can also take home and take it for me it is as authentic as you can get. My favorite part of this restaurant is to come in and order a burrito or Carney Asada for lunch it's great for that. There is a restaurant next door but I don't think they're associated or affiliated so if you want some really good authentic Mexican food I say this is the place. This restaurant also has a few items to take home like hot sauce or tortillas. So when in Sunnyvale I say check them out.

Good local stop; cheap and tasty. It comes pretty close to La Vic, just no orange sauce & you have to ask for guac on your burrito if you really want it. But I've been spoiled: I prefer carnitas from Los Charros & al pastor from Los Cunados.

Seeking a good place for menudo that has tripe, hominy and is open on Sunday. A lot of places shut-down on the weekend, especially Sunday in the South Bay due to catering to the business folks. This place fits the bill all the way around and has mexican beer to drink with the menudo. I would prefer spicier, but not a big deal. Also, their corn tortillas seem to be homemade.

This place is a perfectly acceptable Mexican food joint. The carnitas burrito was good, but not memorable. I'm satisfied, yo.

  • William D.

The guy that works there and collects the cash at the register is cool. I ordered the burrito to go and he kept it warm on the grill till I came. Small gesture but those go a long way for me. Anyhow...on to the meat and potatoes of the review. I ordered the standard for me. I'm pretty picky about my burritos so when I check out a new spot I always try the super burrito carne asada. It was good. I've been back here twice now and I can say it's never let me down. I can't give it 5 stars b/c I rarely give those out for burritos unless I can't stop laughing uncontrollably after biting into a burrito. HEHE.

Had to be near here to pick up something so I looked on yelp and decided to give it a try. I have had pretty good luck with hole in the wall mexican places. Well maybe this was a bad day for them, but my luck was not so good this time. It was OK, but not great and the price was just OK. Would have been worth the extra drive to hit Ruby's instead. Not sure how they stay alive. While it is a "mercado," there is barely anything for sale there in the market part. Also, not much there you can't get at any number of other mexican markets in the area, or even at Safeway. Must be a lot of mexicans without cars living close by. 80% of the space is dedicated to the taqueria.

    (2)
  • Liz L.

I kind of agree with Tramy V. I didn't think the steak was very fresh. I also didn't like the refried beans in my burrito. I don't think they belong unless it's a bean and cheese burrito. That being said, the service here is decent, the salsas are good, and the fish tacos are better than average (but not as good as La Tiendita). I could be convinced to come back.

A hidden gem that only the locals who live and/or work in Sunnyvale really know about. Mind you, I married into a Mexican family so I (now) have a taste of what real Mexican food is. Lat Torre is authentic, homemade mexican fare at very reasonable prices. Portions are huge. This is a family owned and run business. The mercado is more of a mini-mart combined with the kitchen where you can order takeout. The restaurant is on the opposite side. When on the go, I usually grab a burrito (which are huge). The menu is very traditional and they even have menudo. Meats are cooked to perfection, marinated and juicy. I can't say enough good things about this place.

I'm in a constant search for a better burrito in Sunnyvale/Mountain View other than La Bamba in Mountain View. Positives: - Quick and centrally located - The burrito wasn't bad, but not exceptional like La Bamba - Price wasn't bad at slightly under $6 for a burrito Negatives: - No options for Guacamole or Sour Cream - Sanitary conditions are a bit questionable - The tacos are pricey and they didn't taste as good as the burrito Opinion: I would be willing to try it again but La Bamba still rules. La Victoria is a close 2nd because of their awesome tacos. Would I go again? Yes but still undecided.

I have been coming here since they were called De La Torre in the 1980's. Always a good burrito Carnitas and chicken in particular. The Taquito's are hand made on the spot and are perfect. This place is old school mexican comfort food. I used to have this a 4 stars but it has been hit or miss the last few visits.

Abuelita cooking at Taco Bell prices. Mercado La Torre makes some of the tastiest, most authentic burritos in the South Bay. If you're looking for guac and sour cream in them, you're in the wrong place. But if you want great taste, fresh ingredients, large portions and cheap prices, I'll see you there... I go almost weekly for a burrito with everything. It's also a little market where you can buy Mexican items that aren't always at your local grocery -- Mexican Coca-Cola for me. You can't miss the deli counter in the back, the kitchen takes up most of the space. There's indoor seating in an attached room. Don't be snarky about the decorations, remember you came for the killer burrito. As for WTFs: * WTF is with the service? Well, it is pretty much a hole in the wall. They're not really unfriendly, but nobody's going out of their way to call you amigo. Get used to it. * Why-TF is it in the same strip mall with Planned Parenthood? I don't really know, but if you stop into PP tell them John Doe #482 says "hi".

A low 3.5 stars. Definitely a solid burrito, but they don't have an option for guacamole, sour cream, or cheese. The cabbage salad and queso fresco was a unique touch. The asada was not freshly grilled, and I have reports that, despite appearances, the chicken was dry. At a smaller size, it was still very filling, and the free chips and salsa were great. There are better places out there, but you wouldn't go too wrong with La Torre.

Best burrito within a 10 mile radius, IMHO. We have been eating here for 8 years regularly, great salsa, excellent burritos, soup is good. Carnitas burrito is delicious and, as much as I'd like to try other things, the pork keeps-a-callin'. With extra cotija cheese, please. I've always been happy with the personable service. They keep sprucing up the interior a bit, and I am a happy camper every time I devour their food. Plus, you get the min-grocery store option, to pick up milk, beer, & random things.

$5.40 cent burritos that are huge. However the restaurant is very dirty in my opinion. The seats feel sitcky, the corners of the restraurant do not look like they have been cleaned. You just get the uneasy feeling that you rather eat somewhere else. I'll spend extra $$ not to wonder about the conditions of the restaurant. The food was ok, the taste is about avg.

Finally an authentic mexican restaurant in the bay area!!! I have search high and low and have finally found one. Its sad to say but I need to avoid most of the yelp reviews of what people consider "authentic". Chipotle and Chevys are not authentic and for the most part the yelp recommendations usually taste along those lines. But this place is the real deal. I ordered a chile relleno and enchilada combo. It didnt taste like the bomb but is a huge step above what the other mexican places around the bay taste like. I also like the cabbage salad (?) that came with it. It sorta reminded me of the cabbage they serve you when you order papusa. And I didnt even have to ask for some additional tortillas to eat my meal with, they just brought it out. My friend order the pasole and it came in a huge bowl. I almost wished I ate meat so I coulda tried it because it looked so good. His came with a bunch of tostadas and an extra plate full of frest lemons, cabbage, and onions so he could add it to his pasole. Im sure the decor and look of the place will automatically make people pass this place up. But if you want some real mexican food you should give this place a try.

Despite what other reviewers wrote there is guacamole, and cheese (Queso Fresco). You'll have to ask for the guacamole, which costs extra. The pico de gallo with cabbage was a welcome addition to my carne asada burrito. They also sell Mexican versions of both Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Tasty ingredients, large portions, cheap prices, friendly service... I plan to eat here often!

I think this place is one of the best in town. The only bad thing is that the place is so small - sure they use what they can, but it isn't a market like Chavez down the street. But the prices are better than chavez and the portions are bigger as well. Can't go wrong at this place, unless you go in at 8-9 at night and order something, you will be limited in your selection. --Go in for some excelletn menudo on the weekend

This place is a secret. Who would know that this market would make such a good burrito that I make it a chore to come here once a week for lunch. This is the only place that makes grilled chicken (pollo asado) burrito fresh. You can see them grilling them in the back. In most burrito places, they are pre-grilled and re-heated when you order it. They give you the normal rice, beans, cheese. However, they have this special cabbage that makes the burrito so awesome. It is definitely different from many different taquerias i've been. I recommend it to anyone who's looking for something different!

just moved to the neighborhood saw "best burrito in the south bay" on the door and good yelp reviews so we decided to drop in after unpacking some boxes probably the worst burrito i've had. the meat and rice were very dry. i tried to ressurect with some salsa but it was not successful. probably wouldn't go back here considering this experience and because i haven't seen any cars in the parking lot in the 2 weeks i've lived nearby.

This place is the epitome of HOLE IN THE WALL! To put this into perspective, it shares a parking lot with a Planned Parenthood Health Clinic ... um, yeah, not that alluring, but I wanted to try a new place out. It's a small place with some grocery items, but a good majority of the floor space is taken up by the kitchen. The burritos are pretty decent here. They go for a little more authentic of way of doing a burrito. Rather than layering it with a bunch of cheese and veggies, they go for some tasty refried beans, rice, and good meat. The "extras" that they add are some "stinky" cheese and a concoction of cabbage that seems more appropriate on a pupusa than a burrito. I love that cabbage stuff so I don't mind as much.

My go to burrito place in the south bay. It's authentic, fresh and everyone is super friendly. If you are looking for some catering they do a great job and are very cost effective. Talk to Rigo if you're interested or in need.

It's not fancy but sometimes the best places to eat aren't. This is my second favorite place to eat Mexican food (First place goes to Taqueria Super Pollo in Salinas). I've been coming here for over 10 years and I always ordered the same thing - chicken burrito. Nothing fancy - a steamed tortilla, fresh chicken simmered in mexican spices and chopped up right in front of you, topped with a scoop of a cabbage, cilantro, onion mixture and grated cheese, refried beans and rice and hot or mild salsa. Very simple but complex on the taste buds. I know they have other dishes like mole, menudo, tamales, etc. but if it ain't broke ain't inclined to fix it. $6 for a huge tasty burrito, yum.

I love La Costena in Mountain View and I see Mercado La Torre as the Sunnyvale equivalent. I.e., it's a grocery store too so I can buy neat-o Mexican cookies as a dessert to accompany my burrito which is assembled with the ingredients that I pick & choose. (I love being able to follow them down the line and say yes or no to the various fillings.) One thing is that I don't like their default powdered(?) cheese which is probably authentic Mexican but this gringa likes "regular" cheese which they do have on hand for quesadillas; you just have to ask for it.

Top ten burrito joint in the state. Great for a fast burrito on the run.

When I crave burritos, Mercado La Torre is always the first place that comes to mind. The burritos are full of huge pieces of meat, cabbage salad, sprinkled cheese, rice and beans. I'm fairly certain I've tried all of the available meat options over the last five years of stopping there for a burrito run, and all are incredible. Vegetarian options are also available. The quality and portions are a great deal for the $5 or so (depending on what you choose). I generally can't eat the entire burrito in one sitting so a typical Mercado La Torre burrito lasts for two meals (but generally it's one really filling meal). They also make some excellent tacos, soups (I think I could eat their Pozole everyday), and other great options. The place is mostly for folks on the go, but they do provide tables and chairs so you can eat there. On weekends, you can watch them make fresh tortillas and create some mouth-watering tacos. They also offer catering which I've had done twice and both times the food has received nothing but compliments and no matter how much I order, it's usually gone within an hour. I've literally seen my friends scrape the platters trying to get every last bit. For fresh, filling, and wallet-friendly Mexican food, I highly recommend Mercado La Torre.

Good, large, inexpensive burritos. They don't have any sanitary barrier between the chips and the re-used red baskets, which makes me wonder how sanitary the rest of the place is.

Reminds me of all the little family restaurants visited during several vacations to Mexico. The food is delicious and comforting. It's the only place left in Silicon Valley that grind their own corn to make their tortillas and masa (for tamales). They'll even show you the ginder in action. This IS homemade food! Just not at your home! This place has been around since the 1970's...That says a lot! The food is great!

Total last minute order and they were able to fill my order for 24 chicken tamales in about an hour. $18.00 per dozen - good deal! I certainly will be back!

La Torre Mercado is a great place to go for authentic mexican food. I have to agree with other reviews about the carne asada..tried it once and will stay with the carnitas. The carnitas are the best around. Another Yelp reviewed stated that they didn't like beans in their burrito. The food is all out in front of you and YOU choose the ingredients including, sour cream and guacamole..of course you need to ask for that... I don't know of any places that include these two ingredients in their burritos. I've been eating here since the late 80's and have had them cater parties for me twice. The food was kept very warm, they included LOTs of chips, salsa and guacamole not to mention tons of plates and utensils which I didn't need but I thought it was a nice touch. Every year during the holidays I make tamales and posole and buy my masa and nextamal (fresh hominy) from La Torre. I also buy my corn tortillas here for tacos!! Okay people, I love to cook and have to say that my "killer" tacos didn't become "killer" until I used these tortillas. The tortillas are so thin and crisp and don't break after you fry or bake them but you have to ask for them and say specifically "the corn tortillas for frying chips and tacos) because they keep them in the back. The owner is very nice, I wouldn't suggest that they are "cold" or unfriendly...I sort of viewed him as a bit shy. The burrito makers do speak a bit of english and again not very talkative but probably because their english isn't to great. I highly recommend this establishment....So they share a parking lot with Planned Parenthood... As long as it's safe and well lit at night...I'll keep going....

I love mexican joints. I've been to most of the good ones in the Sunnyvale/Mountain View area. Mercado La Torre is still my #1 favorite burrito joint. (La Bamba is a close #2). I've been going there for 6 years now and still love it just as much as the first day. Their carnitas burritos are excellent. It's tender, not crunchy. It's also not dripping in fat. It's all around good. $5.30 will get you a burrito fitting for afternoon siesta.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
