I go to thai places frequently, especially if I'm in the city, SanFran or LA. But, this little tiny town holds one of the greatest thai treasures in California. I am in love with this thai place. Amazing service, beyond great food, great atmosphere. Love it. Dish of choice: gra prow tofu

This was merely a 3 star meal, based on what we had. Tom Kah Gai soup - A coconut based broth with chunks of chicken, cilantro, mushrooms and tasty galangal, it is hard to ruin. Unless you overcook the chicken, which they did. Not impressed. Chicken Satay - Small skewers and dry meat. Unappealing with an overly sweet peanut sauce. Hard to eat. Not pleased. Had better. Would not return even though the service was good, location great, and the interior pleasant.

I was actually very impressed with this little Thai food restaurant. After reading the reviews on yelp, I decided we are going to visit it on our trip to Sonora and bookmarked it. The prices were very reasonable, and the amount of food, except for the portions of rice, were abundant. My husband and I have a picky taste when it comes to Thai food because we have our favorite spot but nothing compares to. We usually order the same things, this time we tried one thing different in our usual some form of red curry. We've never had a curry quite match up to our favorite. This was the closest we came to our favorite red curry out of all the places that we tried in the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles. I wish we could've eaten here again before we left Sonora.

Its thai food , But something is lacking . The food is not bad but not great . The prices were ok. If you have ever had bay area thai food you would know what I mean. This food lacked flavor. The place itself is very nice and the service was top notch. I just wish the food was better. Even the thai ice tea was lacking something .The other thai place in the area is better.

First of all let me say that I simply love Thai food. I have been to dozens of Thai restaurants all over the world including many trips to Thailand. Thai food is without doubt my favorite cuisine, although there are many close runners-up... Sonora Thai is pretty good and definitely in my top three restaurants in the Sonora area. I've eaten here several nights in a row. The Tom Yum Goong is really good. Ask for it to be made "Thai hot". I could bathe in the stuff I love it that much. Satay chicken is great. Green Curry is awesome. Portion sizes are large. Fast friendly service. Nice decor.

Actually not that bad for a Thai restaurants in the area. I can't say I've tried anything else as this was just a quick pit stop on my road trip. I had the red peanut curry ( I cannot for the life of me remember the actual name though!) With Thai spicy and my friend ordered the pad see Ew. Both were definitely a bit on the sweeter side for us compared to our regular Thai places. However the spice and the seasoning were delicious! Proportions were perfect, the curry did seem a little small at first but it was the perfect amount. Overall I would come back if I'm ever in the area!

Surprisingly good for tiny Sonora! I enjoyed the veggie tofu curry. The waitress was friendly and prompt.

Your typical Americanized Thai food. The pad thai was too sweet for my tastes, and the tom yum "seafood" was a little too fishy. Overall, the food could have been more flavorful. For the area, I suppose you have to make do, and by that standard, it's fine. It's well-kept inside and the staff are very friendly. Just don't expect to be blown away.

Just amazing We got a few things Pad Thai, spring rolls, also I forgot the name but it was a meatball like soup with light broth. Pad Thai -- was really amazing noodles where light and airy not clumpy and hard like I have had at places Spring rolls where great Meatball soup -- again sorry forgot the name. The broth was super good witch helped when I had my cold I wanted to try something broth based and this was great. Will be back

This is a new favorite Thai place for me... We don't get up to Sonora very often, but I guarantee the next time we are here, we shall return. I love to dine with more than just the hubs and I, because then it gives me a chance to try multiple dishes. The standards that we always go for were as good, if not better than other restaurants. Papaya Salad, and Pad Thai with shrimp, A+ The variety of BBQd items, were all delicious (Pepper Garlic Pork was my fave out of the choices) Beef and the Crispy Duck were good. Their equivalent of "Panang Curry" was so good. Perfect spice and the thickness that I prefer with Beef. We all loved it. If you like Fried Fish, the Pla Sam Rod was perfectly prepared with the Sweet and Spicy Sauce. And we topped it all off with the Traditional Desserts- Mango with Sticky Rice, and Fried Banana with Coconut Ice Cream. The staff were all so nice. We look forward to dining there again very soon.

Best Thai food I have had in a long time. We will Stop here every-time we are in Gold country. Great service. We got there at 2:55pm, but she was kind enough to take us in. Very very good food.

Stopped in while we were in Sonora. Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the dishes. Kids had the BBQ chicken and chicken satay and left clean plates. I had the squid lunch special and hubby had a curry... All of us left full and happy.

Today I had the #34 YUM! Every flavor I wished to see in an amazing Thai red curry was there. Little spicy, little sweet not to much of any one flavor was over the other. Even the rice was perfectest. I was worried at first because I thought I heard the sound of a microwave door close, but if they happen to use it, way worth it lol

I'm giving 3 stars because the food was so good. We had the appetizer #3 and it was fantastic. It would be 5 stars if not for the poor service. My boyfriend got his entree (something with salmon) and it didn't have all the ingredients that the menu had said so we asked about the asparagus and shrimp that was supposed to come with it. She apologized and took the plate then came back with a salmon filet nearly half the size of the first one, but with all the ingredients. Trying to get her attention to fix that problem was hard. She kept going back and forth from the kitchen to the desk without ever looking up. Then there was a long wait to get our check.

I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious this place is! The pepper garlic pork is soooo good! I also love their peanut dressing! It is one of the best i have tried. I would definitely recommend this place!

Still one of my favorite places to grab a bite downtown. I typically get a number 42, not spicy and it is delicious! The service is prompt and the servers are friendly. The portions are big for me too, so I always get leftovers for later!

Oh how I love Sonora Thai! The service is always very good, and the food is delicious! I am addicted to the peanut sauce and can eat it by the spoonful. My favorite are their Drunken Noodle and Yellow Curry Chicken. Locals and visitors from out of town should definitely stop by while downtown!

Enjoyed a lovely dinner the day after Thanksgiving at Sonora Thai Cuisine. Mom suggested we share the Chicken Fried Rice with Pineapple. Dad stuck with his all time favorite specially prepared for him because of his food allergies. I also really enjoyed a lovely salad with shrimp, I believe it was the #12. Mom went for a bowl of lovely soup to round out her meal. The servers and the chef are all very friendly, helpful and happy to assist you in selecting something extra yummy.

Poor service our waitress asked what we want to order and that was it. Food was ok. Fried duck tasted like plain fried chicken, pad Thai was basic, soup with mushrooms and coconut milk (forgot what it was called) was awesome! Thai iced tea was ok small portions. Decor kind of plain. All in all OK. Not the funnest experience.

Best Thai in TC....oh wait, it's the only Thai in TC! Still good stuff but pricey for what you get.

Went there today for lunch. I was basically the first customer. The hostess/waitress seemed like she wasn't too thrilled to see me for some reason but she warmed up eventually. I sat at a table and she walked away. She then came back and asked me if I wanted something to drink. I told her "just water would be OK" which she promptly brought back to my table along with a cabbage salad. It had a brown dressing that was tasty. I ordered Shrimp Pad-Thai (sp) and deep-fried rolls that had minced pork with glass noodles, carrots and other stuff in it. The three rolls were very delicious! It came with some clear, sweet dipping sauce that had chopped peanuts it. My noodles were so-so. The sauce was too sweet, only 5 shrimp, and no chopped peanuts on top. Over all I wasn't impressed. My check came to $18 and some change. I may go back and try some curry.

i used to the think the portions were kind of small but i think they give you just enough! I've been back quite a few times and some of the good items to get: 1. green curry 2. spring rolls - comes with 3 rolls! 3. chicken satay but get the peanut sauce instead 4. rainbow salad! its with silver noodles and shrimp. love the spicy tangy flavor! 5. the rest of the stir fry items can get kind of salty but it comes with rice. almost stop by once a week.

I love this place. The place is always super clean, very nice servers and the food is fresh and hot. I love their soups, the spring rolls and well, everything I have tried is great. The only misgiving I had is they served me a glass of wine that was stale tasting. The food though, very good!

We have ordered from here several times, I love Thai. Each time we have been very happy with what we receive. We are particularly partial to some of the appetizers. The Tofu-Krob is ridiculous. I am not a vegetarian, nor am I particular to tofu, it's a texture thing. However this is so good, a texture that comes from the magical cooking methods that are behind the curtain. The sauce is sweet, a little spicy, and makes you want to lick the plate. Topping it off are the almost see through crisp basil leaves that shatter like delicate glass, releasing all their flavor completing this dish. We also get the Fresh Rolls. Just wow, so good. Cocooned in rice paper is a mixture of creamy avocado, tender garlic rice noodles, clean fresh cucumber, crisp lettuce and sweet carrot. They pair this with peanut sauce for you to drizzle on just prior to the devouring. I could explain how much we love every one of the dishes we ordered, Pad Thai that is addicting, Pad-se-eiw, also called drunken noodle. I could eat just the broccoli and sauce from this dish alone. Great flavor. Of course the curries, we have tried, and repeatedly ordered since, red, green, and yellow curries. You can ask for them to be hot, and if you aren't timid, ask for Thai hot. It can be pretty exhilarating and delicious. I haven't had one thing from them that I haven't needed to have again. Just a great place.

I'm so glad I finally tried this place! I'm definitely a fan. The place isn't much to look at. The dining room is dark, and pretty lackluster. The food, however; GREAT!! And the service: top notch attention from the super friendly staff. I've been back, and will continue to go back. I suggest that you give it a try!

We found this place on Yelp while on a short visit to Sonora and were excited to give it a try! We got it to-go since we were traveling with a dog. The restaurant smelled amazing! I had tofu pad thai and my mom the tofu pad kee mow (drunken noodles). Both just OK. Would try a curry dish next time.

The choices for quality food in this area are slim at best, so I was delighted to get some fresh delicious Thai food here. Everything from the salads to the veggie rolls to the Thai iced tea was delicious....the sauteed green bean / cashew salad was just the right amount of spicy. The downside was that prices seemed too high, and they were skimpy with the shrimp in both the fresh rolls and the spring rolls, but we will try the lunch menu next time and see if we can get more protein out of it. We spent $45 with tax + tip for three people, for what was basically a very fresh assemblage of veggies for lunch and that just seems a little high. But again.....not much to choose from on this street so we will definitely be back.

Really enjoyed our dinner here. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and we had excellent service. I had the Chef's Special Salmon. Delicious! Portion size was adequate, although my husband is a big eater and his plate of tasty Song Sa Hai could have been a bit larger.I would highly recommend this place and we will be coming back for more.

We stayed in a nearby Lake house for Thanksgiving weekend and we wanted to have some curry/rice. I really liked ambience and the food. Especially Chicken Himali was so good and must try item. If you can't handle Thai chilli spice, get the dish made as medium spicy. It was little bit pricy but totally worth it.

  • Jill P.

This is the only Thai option in the area, but even if it were not we would still be fans. The service is quick and friendly and the food never disappoints. We always order a bowl of tom ka gai (coconut milk soup with chicken) and one of the curries (they have a few curry choices and all are wonderful). I do wish however that they had a pumpkin curry as that is one of my favorite Thai dishes, and that their "mild" option was just a tad more mild (I'm a big spicy wimp). If you are a fan of spicy then of corse they do have the Thai spice option that will knock your socks off. Overall one of my favorite places in Sonora to eat. Reasonable prices and good service.

Been here for lunch and enjoyed it. Would not come back for dinner though. An additional $4 for the exact same amount as lunch. The only difference is that the single rice portion is served on a separate plate--making everything look smaller. It didn't go far for two hungry diners. Plus no cabbage salad with peanut dressing that's served with lunch.

I'm a huge fan of Thai food and I was pleasantly surprised that in a city not known for ethnic cuisine, Sonora Thai rivals the best in San Jose. We always get the chicken satay for an appetizer because it is juicy and the peanut dipping sauce is sublime. I always order my favorite Thai dish: yellow curry. It is the perfect blend of creamy, nutty and spicy and, best of all, the rice is included in the price of the dish. (Most Thai restaurants will charge you $1.50 extra for rice for dinner, and it always makes me feel like I'm getting ripped off.) The Pepper Garlic Pork and the BBQ Beef is also really good, always served fresh and sizzling. I will only say that it's odd that they serve soda out of cans and do not have a fountain. But overall, good service, clean restaurant and excellent food.

My husband and I always enjoy eating here. The room is clean, and the food is always fresh and hot. Service is fast and friendly. We shared the spring roll appetizer, then I had the red curry beef and my husband had sweet peanut curry chicken (I don't know the Thai names). The food was good, and there is a choice of mild, medium, or hot spice. We each had our meal medium spice, which has a good kick, but not overpowering. For dessert, we shared the coconut ice cream with fried bananas. All in all, a good experience, and we will be back! Thank you, Sonora Thai Cuisine, for a delightful meal on Memorial Day.

As a chef by profession I eat out a LOT. And I LOVE Thai food. Being born and raised in Sonora we had two or three restaurants to choose from 'back in the day'. Now, when I visit I never miss Sonora Thai. Sonora is so blessed to have this gem! The pad woon sen is the best I've ever had (and I'm on an ongoing mission to TRY to prove that wrong!) The staff is beyond gracious. They are fast and consistent. They have stayed open late for me more than once when calling in a to-go order. Love this place!

  • Sylvia P.

Living in the Bay Area, I am totally spoiled on ethnic food and my expectations for good food and customer service are high. We are regular visitors to the area and Sonora is extremely lucky to call Sonora Thai Cuisine as a restaurant in their community. The food is amazing - you can taste the freshness and good quality in all their dishes. The restaurant itself has a modern and colorful feel to it, not the drab and outdated atmosphere of some of the other places in town. A perfect combination of celebrating the historic building while adding a modern touch. The service is not over the top, but I don't like over the top service. I like the occasional check-in and replenishment of beverages, but not someone that checks on me every two minutes. It's great to find authentic Thai food in an area with not so many ethnic food options and I wish the humble owners success with Sonora Thai!

  • Tea Lady L.

The food itself was just ok. The curry had a different flavor to it that I didn't much care for. I wouldn't bother going back when there are other restaurants with great food nearby. The service was terribly slow -- it took 5 minutes before anyone even brought a menu to my table and another 7 minutes before someone showed up to take my order. I finally had food 30 minutes after arriving. The chairs were very uncomfortable to the point I asked for to go boxes after eating only a little. The people at the next table had to chase after the waitress to get their check paid. It wasn't overly busy and there were three waitresses working.

I love Thai food but I have a favorite in Modesto and so I rarely eat any other. But I found myself in Sonora and needed lunch and the reviews for this place were great. And I am so glad I did. We had the Tom Kai Gai soup and the Panang and they were both amazing. Will definitely eat here EVERY time I am in Sonora.

Excellent service, great food and a pleasant atmosphere. We had a great salad of green beans, coconut and cashews with a lime dressing. WONDERFUL. We also shared the apetizer of fried shrimp rolls - full of plump tasty shrimp. The wife had a glass of house white wine which was just fine and I had a very tasty Thai iced tea. A really nice lunch.

I've tried a couple of the soups and they were very good. Pad thai was good and you can get the spice just right, just ask! Mango sticky rice was pretty good, but I think that they could have a little bigger portions. Otherwise, very good fresh food. Also, no A/C??? It gets hot here during the summer. I don't want to eat spicy food when it's 100 degrees inside!

Not the best Thai I've had, but the fact that I am able to get mango and sticky rice close to home is awesome!

Sonora Thai Cuisine was a real Sonora treat, went in for lunch every table was taken, opted for one the vegetarian dishes with garlic and tofu. Tasty. I understand they have a 2nd menu for soup. Enjoyed the dish and the Thai iced tea. Welcome to downtown Sonora.

Early Tuesday evening. No one else there. Friendly service. Pleasant room. I ordered the green curry, my wife pad-? (#27) with black mushroom, baby corn, chicken, ginger, ... . I've been fortunate to have some green curry I LOVE. This was not that, but it was good green curry. My wife also thought her dish was good but not the best she'd had. I could fault the amount of rice that came with the meal but it was adequate. In a world of restaurants that serve us more than we need I won't fault one that gives us enough.

Nice treat to find a good Thai restaurant in the mountains. Friendly staff will make it quite spicy if you ask in Thai.

We were just thrilled when Sonora Thai Cuisine opened here and we just keep going back over and over again. In fact, we've become friends with the waiter, Mark because we eat there almost every week. I have eaten at slightly better Thai restaurants and ones with a lot more expensive decor, but for a delicious, healthy, casual meal out, this is the best place to eat in Sonora. Do not miss the Pepper Garlic Pork if you are a meat eater! The Tom Yum Gai soup is always good with veggies just barely cooked to perfection in delicious coconut milk broth. They have the best peanut sauce anywhere...bar none. Sticky brown rice is available, too. Their homemade coconut ice cream is awesome. I don't understand why people say it is expensive. You get what you pay for and if you want the best, freshest ingredients, you need to be willing to pay a fair price. They are NOT overpriced!

There were eight of us so had to push some tables together. First I have to say the the cook is a wonderful lady that is from Bangkok that has been in the US for 20 years. She came out to our table after we had time to enjoy the food and asked us how we liked everything and was very happy to answer all our questions. We tried a variety of things. A couple of our group had not yet enjoyed the pleasures of Thai cooking and I believe they are now converts! The peanut curry with beef was oh so tasty! Crispy tofu is one of my favorites and Thai restaurants and we had it here. It was a big hit with all. The green curry was medium heat and very fresh. The company and the food were wonderful and a lot of smiles were shared!

Being vegan in this area is tough and we were very happy with the fresh veggies and brown rice offered here. Nice sauces and good tea too.

I have been here five or six times now and this place is so so good. The food is always great and the cost is reasonable. One experience really stands out. It was the second time I had ever been here. My girlfriend and I went in for dinner and I had the vegetarian duck which is always so good, and she tried something new (I don't even recall what it was). When she got it she clearly didn't like it, but she knew she was taking a gamble by ordering something she had never heard of before and ate a few bites of it and ate her small side salad and moved on without complaining to sharing some of mine. The waiter noticed that she clearly wasn't happy with what she had ordered and offered to replace the order with something different free of charge (completely unprompted, just did it on his own initiative). She declined and said it was fine she had a few bites and was fine. when he brought us our bill he also brought us a free desert and my girlfriends entree was not on the bill. We mentioned to him and he said "just make sure when you come back you try something else" Ha ha. We were very very pleased. I highly suggest trying this restaurant!

Honestly one of the best restaurants in the Mother Lode. Their food is fresh, fast and brings something different to the region! The staff is friendly, in fact one night when I was working late downtown, I ran in because I was freezing and hungry and asked if the kitchen was still open because I would basically take anything hot, their staff brought me out a huge to-go cup of the spicy shrimp soup, made to order with their awesome salad dressing. If you're looking for some fresh and yummy cuisine in this area, stop here and you won't regret it.

I guess I will have to give this restaurant another try. After reading all of the wonderful reviews, I just had to take my out of town guests to a Thai restaurant in Sonora!! We were sorely disappointed with the food. The Pad Thai was no where near as good as we had in Hawaii. And they did not offer any heat levels with the entrees; had to ask for what appeared to be their only jar of chili sauce. We did enjoy the ambience, but the bistro chairs were so uncomfortable we asked to be moved to another table. I really want to like this restaurant, so I will try it again. Fingers crossed.

Hard to believe in the heart of Gold Country there is such good Thai food. Beats all Thai restaurants in the South Bay.

I ate there last night and was a little ambivalent about the food. I ordered Drunken Noodles/aka Pad Kee Mow, which is a very typical dish that I have had many times, many places. This was not so typical: it had broccoli? carrots? chopped tomato? and almost no basil. Although the taste was pleasant enough, it certainly was not Drunken Noodles. Also, although it is winter now, this place is on the sunny side of the street in Sonora, which is typically very hot in the summer,, and they have NO air conditioning. last summer I tried it once. Intolerable.

I have been eaten here 3 times and the food is always good. The first time was right after they opened and the service wasn't so good. But I'm happy to say that I waited a while before going back and the last 2 times I have been the service was good. It's great to have Thai food in Sonora!

I was so sad when Bon Appetit Closed down... devastated to be exact! But I am pleased to be that it was replaced by a good Thai restaurant. I was a little bummed that they didn't offer Thai sticky rice but other than that the food was good. It was a little on the pricy side but def good food.

Remember we are in downtown Sonora.... I've had Thai food before in the Bay Area but the freshness and quality at this restaurant was top notch. Not too heavy on the oils, great prices, I can't wait to go back.

We were unexpectedly in Sonora after a semi-horrific river rafting accident and a 6 hour visit to the E.R. I wanted to put my fiancee up in a hotel so we could put off the drive home to the bay area. We stayed at the Days Inn which was awesome! The people in the E.R. recommended Sonora Thai and after getting him settled and properly medicated, I headed to Sonora Thai. I was super surprised at the number of veggie options and that they had no issues altering dishes to be completely vegan. We got the tofu and basil appetizer, which was amazing. I also got a vegan pad sew ew and panang tofu. I found some lovely splatter ware plates at Scarlet's Web and took it all up to the room. Plating everything on real plates made the day and the meal special, and took our minds off a rough day. The food was amazing. I also asked for everything extra spicy and for extra chili peppers. I was also really happy that they had brown rice. YUM! Thanks Sonora Thai for helping us change the direction of our day!

This place has amazing Thai food! I love their panang. Also, one off the menu that I highly recommend is the Fried Morning Glory or Pad Pak Boong, super yummy!

What a pleasant surprise! From across the street, the canopy still has the name of the former business on it where I had intended originally intended to have lunch and purchase a baguette to take home to the Bay Area. After Iooking over the choices on the block, I returned to Sonora Thai and its neat and inviting interior: clean hardwood floors, high ceilings and brick-exposed wall. I didn't realize that I was in for a treat! I selected the Yellow Curry Chicken on the Lunch Menu which came with a salad. The salad dressing was a slightly tangy, peanut sauce vinaigrette with shredded carrots. I was happy that the salad did not contain cucumbers which most Thai restaurants put in their salads because I feel that it overpowers and clashes with the peanut sauce vinaigrette. The curry was served with a mound of fragrant jasmine rice and came from the kitchen piping hot. The degree of spiciness was mild and to my liking. There were many juicy chunks of chicken. It was certainly a great bargain at $7.95! The staff was very friendly and solicitous, always refilling my water glass, checking on me, inquiring if I needed anything, and bringing the check promptly. I will definitely return again when I am in Sonora!
