Good pastries.

OMG. i wish i could come here everyday! i would if Solvang wasn't in the middle of nowhere! the clam cookies are freaking awesome! everything is so good. i spent $25 last time i was here just buying all the little cookies and pastries. you have to come here! enough said.

Service = friendly. Happy. Selection = plentiful. I love their cookies. Delicious danish butter cookies. Tin of 48 for under $11.00! Or get the bucket of 80 for under $16.... They have baked goodies, such as pastries and breads but I stuck to the cookies.
(5)Christian K.
This fun little taste of Danish tradition has the best pastries around. Whenever I'm traveling through, I stop and pick up an assortment of pastries for myself, and to bring back to family an friends. Pricy? Yes. Worth it? Every penny. There are a variety of pastries I buy, although my favorites from Mortensen's have to be their Napoleon Hat, Nut Horns, and Krunsekage. Cheers!

Having grown up in Santa Barbara, I have been to Mortensens many times. Great pastries, great location. Its a must stop for me anytime im in town (even when Im trying to eat healthy!)
(5)Myrna J.
Bought cheese Danish and some other pastries. Very disappointed with the cheese Danish, the cheeses has an interesting taste to it. The cheese Danish I get from the supermarket is tasting better.

I am from one of the original Danish communities in the country. When I moved to California, I really though I would never taste pastries from the "old world" again. I was wrong. Years ago, we stumbled upon this quaint community on the central coast and found Mortensens Danish Bakery. I was a bit apprehensive about trying the place, but when I walked in the door, I was truly not disappointed. Their kringle is fantastic and just might give the bakeries at home a run for their money. I think it is time to order from them again... FYI...I am still trying to find a place that makes a good donuts. I wonder if I could convince Mortensens to give them a try....

Count your cookies in your bucket. The board says 80 cookies per bucket. I have 69. Let me know how many you have.........
(3)Manoj N.
Nothing special. Just like any other pastry shop. Some of them are very sugary in case you don't like too much sweetness in your treat. Place gets crowded during weekends.
(3)Michael B.
Very good bake goods and coffee, little spend-y. Nice staff and friendly, but then again you are in Solvang.
(4)Mark C.
Who can complain about Danish desserts and treats? They are awfully delicious. However, I think there are more better goodies at the other bakeries in the city. If you're going to Solvang, the best recommendation would be to hop around grabbing treats all over like it's halloween. Just don't wear a costume. I tried the assorted box of goodies, some custard-filled surprises and a few chocolate balls. The rum-flavored ones were indeed tasty and I highly recommend the the coconut macaroons. And yes, I'm talking about food (get your mind out of the gutter)! However, I just think that the place is way too hyped. And much like most of Solvang, it's way too expensive for me to splirge on when there are many shops that provide the same great snacks in LA for a better price.
(3)Michele G.
Pastry so delicious, it was totally worth going off my low carb diet! When I'm eating healthy and light, I curse myself for snacking on something "not worth the calories." But my daughter swung by Solvang, after a trip to San Luis Obispo, and grabbed some pastries for her dad and me. While cutting myself a tiny slice of a buttery, cream cheese and raspberry filled pastry (I had to! It would have hurt my daughter's feelings if I didn't... I swear!), I licked my fingers. Oh my Gawd! The frosting was soooo tasty!! So I couldn't help making my slice bigger. Yeah, I ate more pastry than I planned. But I don't regret it. That was the best damn pastry I think I've ever had. I can't wait to go to Solvang. I will be sure to go to Mortensen's Bakery.
(4)Phoenix S.
This bakery had the friendliest and enthusiastic staff. This was the 4th bakery we stopped by today and we were most impressed by the gals behind the counter. Even more impressive is that the owner donates leftover/day-old pastries to the senior center in town, and after we made our purchases and continued to chat a bit, she gave us a couple of treats on the house. :-) Definitely made our visit!
(4)Cynthia L.
OMG!!! I absolutely love this place !! This bakery has "THE BEST" butter cookies in town! I have tasted for all the bakeries and none of them compare to theirs. I have told friends and family to buy the tubs and they too raved about how Yummy they are. As long as you keep them sealed in the tub they stay fresh for months ! I have to say there tubs are the most expensive; however they are worth every penny !! They are "THE BOMB" to quote my brother. LOL ! :D I look forward to my next visit ! :)

Yummy. Yummy. Yummy

Everyone knows that if you're going to Solvang and you dare mention it to people you're going to get asked to bring back Danish cookies. I've never quite understood people's obsession with these butter cookies, but when it comes to food requests of others I try to gracious oblige... When we got to Solvang I noticed a plethora of bakeries and panic started to set in. How would I know which bakery to go to? Are all Danish cookies equal? I didn't want to return with sub par cookies and disappoint anyone. It was getting late and businesses were staring to close (in Solvang, "late" is 5pm!) We wandered towards Moretensens and noticed they too were starting to lock their door, but the friendly employee allowed us to slip in. The employee behind the counter was so friendly! I guess if I worked in a bakery in Solvang I'd be perpetually pleasant too...not only did she WANT to help us even though they were closed she kept looking out the window and saying "there are still so many cars in town, I wonder if we should stay open longer"....I thought she was super nice! I grabbed a small tray of cookies and paid and on our way out my friend noticed a fresh tray of Lacey's and wanted to buy one, but the lady behind the counter insisted she just help herself to one! How freakin nice is that???? I feel that the friendly staff here is worth experiencing... screw the baked goods...you can get baked goods anywhere but genuinely happy and friendly people are rare finds!
(4)Irene L.
Tried a couple pastries (about $2.25/piece). It was ok, some were a little too sweet. Service was friendly. Would try the other bakeries around.
(3)Traci D.
Oh my... we visited Solvang on a friend's suggestion in December 2011. Cute little town, lots of the same shops over and over. The reason you want to go here though is the bakeries. OMG. HEAVEN! Mortensen's definitely topped my list with the most amazing baked goods in town. They have a mocha bar that is highly addictive (I ended up buying half a dozen to take home and will be looking online to see if they ship stuff), and the raspberry butter cookies are delicious (there was a name for them but I can't remember it). We also tried the chocolate cream puffs which were AMAZING, and a couple clam cookies (chocolate between two butter cookies with other melt in your mouth stuff between). I would've loved to sit and have coffee and taste all that in a relaxed setting - they have tables for such - but we wanted to keep walking around and see everything before it got dark so we took our goodies with us. We actually walked BACK across town after the first round to get the stuff to take home, it was THAT good. It can be a little noisy at the counter, and there's no line or order to getting service, so that can be slightly frustrating. The poor girls behind the counter do their best to keep up but end up just taking whoever barks loudest I think. We were there at a really busy time on a Friday I believe. The prices are reasonable... not grocery store cheap, but not as expensive as I expected for a tourist town or a speciality food place. I'm sure they probably do bigger things like cakes and such as well, but I was focused on the sweets. I saw they also had croissants, danish, and that kind of pastry too, but we were looking for desserts after a great lunch down the street so I can't really say how those were, altho I'm confident they would also be delectable. Don't miss this amazing bakery if you're visiting Solvang. It's definitely the best one we sampled, and we tried several while there. :)
(5)Jason G.
Being in Solvang, we had to try some danishes of course. Mortensen's looks cute and cozy, so we tried it. On first glance, I was a bit surprised by the danishes. They look a lot different that I am used to. They look really hard and dry. I almost bailed out and went to a pancake joint down the street. I'm really glad I didn't. Don't be fooled by their no nonsense, scone-like appearance, Mortensen's danishes are bomb. Custard, raspberry and lemon were all excellent. Friends had other things that were said to be excellent. Free refills on coffee were a definite plus. If only this place had free wi-fi, it would be a perfect 5 stars.
(4)Natasha A.
The pastry I had was the cherry boat it didn't have too much filling but was good. I had hot chocolate and that was also good. But for the price and service I wouldnt come back. The girls working there didn't seem like they knew what to exactly do or even how to act with customers. It was very big but looked like it wasn't well maintained. Nothing was too inviting. It was just there.
(2)Ji Y.
The bakery looks a bit old school inside but don't judge the design of this place because once you taste the danish, you won't remember the decor of this place. I asked the cashier girl want is their popular selling items and she mentioned a few. The danish she suggested was delicious! The raspberry filled danish was my favorite. The crust on these danish is so flaky, buttery, and oh so good!
(4)Ryan R.
This is one of our favorite places to visit in Solvang, but suddenly they no longer make macaroons. It is in a great location, the people are very nice, and you can always count on a great smelling area in the mornings. The eclairs are REALLY good.
(4)Dave A.
At the risk of sounding cliched, it's the best Danish I've ever eaten. Including in Denmark.
(5)Yuri R.
No bathrooms?!? Lost a star.
(4)Michael D.
At first glance it looks like all the other pastry places you'd find in any town but the difference is in the taste. We ordered a bunch of stuff and coffee then it was a free for all. I think someone lost an eye or a finger in the melee but it was worth it. Great place to take the kids cause you could say stuff like: "if you don't behave, you're gonna get fish gut instead of a pastry?" Well, it works on my kids..... The pastries are well made and flavorful but not too rich. I liked the coffee cause it was good and not the institutional stuff you get at these tourist traps. In all, I'd like to go back and chill-ax here if I have the opportunity.
(4)Adam H.
Best place in all of Solvang to get pastries. My father and I have been coming here for as long as i can remember. This place is very friendly and clean. it's a nice place to go for a simple breakfast with coffee and a pastry. We always fill up a box of pastries before we hit the road. If your in town and looking for a place with some authentic Danish pastries, this is it.
(5)Ferdmeister V.
Try the Napoleons at this place and don't forget the Apple Strudel topped with almonds! Their selection is not bad ... they are not as big as the others around town but definitely a stop that you must make when in Solvang.
(4)Bebe W.
We literally did a bakery crawl in Solvang - wanted to see which ones we would like better. We shared a custard danish, which the counter person said was one of their most popular items. It was too sweet to my taste, even after I scraped off all the frosting. Glad I tried it, but will probably go elsewhere the next time I am in town.
(3)H T.
Great service. Good pastries. Orders 3 different pastries and they all were great! I'm not one for sweet stuff but paired with coffee that taste like coffe and it's amazing! Dig the staff too. Ordered one cup of coffee to share with the gf and without asking the young dude just came up and refilled it. Didn't expect that at all! That was cool. Before we left bought a dozen mixed to go. Still good after 2 days. Cheers! -Herbal Tea
(4)Sodanie C.
It's pretty much a hit or miss. Some of the stuff are great, some of the stuff are okay at most. The Florentine cookie was by far the best I've ever had. Prices are pretty normal in my opinion. The interior was really cute. I would be stopping here every time I'm in Solvang.
(4)Abdel Z.
Love the custard filled danish here!! I usually order the big custard cake to take home, deliciousssss
(5)Jing X.
The location is best, but the bakery is just so so
(2)Pasadenians ..
The place is OK but not the counter service for sure. The girl at the counter was talking to another co-worker and didn't pay attention to us until we seemed to be ready to order. She was not really interested in working so she placed our order in a very disinterested way and left our order behind in the counter and when we paid she didn't know where our pastry was.. Once seated outdoors, the service was very attentive but not the coffee.. No restrooms in-house so you'll need to go to the public restrooms in the park close by. With all the options available in Solvang I doubt I will come back again to this bakery..
(2)Susan D.
First bakery we went to during a recent trip to Solvang. Very quaint place as most of the shops in Solvang. Bought various pastries to sample to take to our hotel. Upon opening the box, all the pastries were stuck together, one on top of another, and sideways, like a Jenga puzzle, and the only thing separating the pieces was the tissue paper each pastry was retrieved in. It quickly became visually unappealing. But to their credit, the pastries tasted good. However, after going to other bakeries in Solvang the next day, we realized that all bakeries carried similar items that tasted the same. So we decided on the last day of our vacation to go back to Olsen's bakery (because they also have breads as well) to buy pastries to take back home as gifts for friends, and they were beautifully packaged. We definitely would go back to Olsen's instead.
(3)Daniel R.
The tea was overpriced for cheap off-the-shelf variants. The raspberry almond strip was pretty good, but is not fresh in the evening. There are no public restrooms.
(3)Suchin H.
How good is this place? The last time I went to Solvang, I got my usual fill of Paula's Pancakes and decided to get an eclair from Mortensens to enjoy once I got home (roughly about a 2 and 1/2 hour drive). I figured I could contain myself considering that I was already stuffed from eating at Paula's. How long into the ride home did it take before that eclair was destroyed?about 15 minutes in. Trust me, when you take a look at these eclairs, somehow it doesn't matter how full you are, you just want to tear into them... They are a chocolate, custard, raspberry, and whip cream filled slice of heaven. You cannot leave Solvang without one...or five.
(4)BC H.
Just based on the pistachio squares I would drive 2 hours to eat one they are amazing almond and pistachio paste oh yeah that's the stuff.
(4)Marjorie U.
If you don't care about ur diet then this place is for you. They don't have a restroom so if you ate too much and u need to go then u are so screwed! They do have restrooms across the street. Just run fast. All their pastries are good.
(5)Vidyaranya R.
There is no better place to have a bakery than in the heart of Solvang. The treats are so attractive and staff is very sweet. Had a raspberry macaroon square. It was so delicious that I finished my wife's share as well!!!
(4)Ikeb I.
After much hype over pastries in Solvang, we decided to check it out for ourselves. Honestly, I thought it was just alright. Then again, maybe it's because my father is a baker, or that I don't particularly love saccharinely sweet goodies.... But I felt underwhelmed. First off, the showcases weren't very full, so selection was limited. Then everything we tried was TOO sweet. The only item I liked was the chocolate Florentine, and even that I felt they overdid by sandwiching it with chocolate buttercream. Maybe I hit the wrong bakery... Or maybe Danish pastries aren't my style.... I'd rate it 2.5 stars but I guess an extra 1/2 for the ok service.
(3)Shannon L.
Not nearly as good as Danish Mill Bakery! The girls here are soooooo emotionless. I've seen these expressions all three times that I've been in the bakery. Nonetheless, I decided to try a custard danish. The dough is flaky but I've had better (Danish Mill) and the custard just didn't taste good. It was too sweet, too eggy and not smooth enough. I ended up scooping it all out.
(1)Devo G.
Beautiful Place to stop and enjoy a wonderful pastry
(5)monica d.
I'm biased because I grew up in Solvang and worked at this bakery when I was in high school 20 years ago. Back then the first person in had to carry the large fresh baked goodies sitting hot on trays that just came right out of the ovens to the front display cases, imagine the sweet, gooey center oozing out warm pastry goodness, yum! Get there early and you will have the freshest pastries ever. This is what started my Mortensens obsession. Now every time I come home for a visit I make at least one trip to Mortensens.
(5)David O.
After our breakfast at Paula's Pancake House, my wife wanted us to walk around the town of Solvang. What she didn't tell me, however, was that she had a very specific mission in mind: find Mortensens and buy a bunch of Sarah Bernhardts. The bakery is actually quite spacious and you can eat the delicacies there on the premises. We opted for a to-go box so we could savor the pastries over the next several days. I must say I greatly enjoyed the Sarah Bernhardt, a soft cookie made with a macaroon and buttercream filling dipped in chocolate. I also tried the Eclair but I wasn't articularly impressed with that one since it strays pretty far from the standard French Eclair. Service was fast and friendly so Mortensen definitely deserves 4 stars.
(4)Paolo M.
This place is well-known for it's kringle. A large pretzel-shaped Danish pastry filled with an almond-flavored custard offering the slightest hint of anise and a smattering of raisins. It's so popular that there was only one left when I arrived at Moreten's in the early afternoon. The kringle was a big hit with my friends whom I took it to in the Bay Area, but the apple strudel I purchased was a bigger hit. The dozen gourmet cookies/pastry treats were good. Not the best, but still very tasty. This place is quite the tourist attraction, so be prepared to encounter a line of people. As far as bakeries go, there are finer ones I've been too, but it's a solid bakery which offers some unique treats when you're away from home. The ladies behind the counter were very helpful in making good recommendations. If not for their pastries, the outdoor seating with a good view is nice and the store-front provides a pretty photo-op. This is a pleasant place to sit and relax when you need to rest from your stoll through Solvang
(3)Jonas T.
Way too expensive for a danish but they really are some of the best danishes I've ever had. JONASAPPROVED!
(3)Frances L.
I love sweets, and I was actually surprised that there was actually a difference between the various bakeries in Solvang. I just assumed they'd all taste super similar, if not the same. I was wrong. Mortensens is a pretty decent bakery, but it's not my favorite. I like their smaller desserts, like their Bear Claws and their Raspberry Danishes; even their apple turnovers-- however, for Almond Butterings, loaves of bread, and other stuff-- I like to go to other places like Solvang Bakery and Danish Mill.
(3)Lisa S.
Another day, another visit to Mortensen's! This time I tried the pistachio bar. Hot damn! Think delicious crumb cake, a layer of moist delicious marzipan, another layer of the delicious crumb cake, and more fabulous marzipan. It's topped with almonds & then half of it is dipped in the most scrumpdillyicious chocolate you've ever had. You can taste the wonderful pistachio flavor throughout. I was speechless...& that's pretty rare. =)
(5)Tomomi S.
I have one word to say for this bakery: chocolate rum balls. OK, three words. I apologize for not having pictures to show how yummy they were, but I purchased 4 balls, and the lady wrapped each one of them in wax paper just like a precious Christmas glass ornament. It is that good. Warning: the outer layer of hard chocolate covering will crumble if or when you bite into this 2- 2 1/4 inch ball. I'd recommend quartering a ball to avoid chocking for some over confident, "Don't worry, I have a big mouth" eaters. Also, be sure to have a paper on your lap if you are sitting in a car trying to eat it. It will save your time from scrubbing the chocolate mess off the floor mat or car seat later on.... trust me.
(4)Dan N.
Mortensen's Bakery is good. The danishes are tasty but as others mentioned below the baked goods are not really exciting or super special. They're a bit expensive for what they are but hey, if you are going to Solvang you better pick some up or the people waiting for you at home are going to be mad. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh since I went to Denmark last month and had some AMAZING danishes (although they call them something related to Italy there..). Still, they are tasty and this place is worth a stop if you are walking around the area. We tried the cream cheese (not so into this one) and the custard (pretty delicious). My mom stole the raspberry one I wanted so can't say how it was :(
(3)Brandon T.
Mmm pastries! I'm a sucker for pastries so I ordered a few items here as "gifts". Got the Butterring, Kringle, a few Pastry Boats, and a Danish. The pastries do have an unique taste that isn't found in other pastries like American or French pastries. The price isn't too bad either. The Butterring and Kringle both were $13 a piece, but can easily serve 5+ people. Service was very friendly and the ladies that work there are very pretty. I would stop by here again if Solvang was on my way to another adventure.
(4)Osvaldo D.
The deserts were great, but the coffee left something to be desired. It was too watered down.
(3)Jenny K.
EVERYTHING i tried was sooo delectable!! got apple strudel (huge), custard pastry, MARZIPAN-MANIA!! i wish i got more of the marzipan stuff (pistachio marzipan square, raspberry marzipan, almond marzipan, almond marzipan horn) and the owl raspberry cookies!! I LOVE MARZIPAN BECAUSE OF THE CHEWY TEXTURE!!! the only reason i'm not giving 5 stars cuz i thought it was overpriced. they can charge that much cuz it's in a tourist area. guess i'll have to make another trip there next time i'm in solvang. will be looking forward to it!!!
(4)TheTruth W.
This is definitely the best bakery in Solvang, but unfortunately they have a bunch of spoiled brats behind the counter. Over the years I've probably been to this place at least a dozen times, and every time there is a new girl behind the counter with the same horrible attitude. The only reason we keep going back is because of the pistachio squares. O-M-G these are sooo good! I'm not a big fan of danish cookies, but wow, they really know how to make those bars. This place is miles ahead of the other bakeries in Solvang. I just wish the owner would starts reading all the yelp reviews and realize that the surly girls behind the counter are making people hate this place.
(4)Kristina R.
Bought a bunch of pastries to take home. All were delicious! I recommend their Cream Cheese Danish, Custard pastry, and especially their Marzipan Horseshoes! I wish I had gotten more of those! Staff was friendly in helping me choose the best goods.
(4)Sharon C.
It's a hit and miss with this place. Their pistachio squares and napoleon caps are AMAAAAAZING, as well as their apple and apricoat boats. Their pistachio cream puffs were way too sweet, with 75% of it being sugary cream. They use a lot of marizpan in their products, which I love. Some people may not like it so much. They're pretty pricey, though, so I wouldn't come here to get a box load of stuff even though some of their pastries are delicious.
(4)Sumay J.
It was okay - definitely better than Olsen's. A little sweeter than I like, though.
(3)Cheryl C.
Had the BEST cupcake I've ever had!! A red velvet cupcake... unfortunately, they only had one left and I had to share it with my husband. Damn! The next morning we woke up bright and early and hit them up for breakfast danishes for our drive out of town. Fluffy, flaky goodness... definitely worth stopping in!!
(4)Chris Y.
Terrific bakery. The pastries are rich, flaky, and delicious. They have a quaint seating area. Perfect for a quick morning bite w/ coffee. Excellent Solvang location. Definitely worth stopping by.
(4)Tasha M.
The eclairs are fantastic! Well worth the trip! The neopalitan is a favorite too, but the eclair steals the show. Theirs beat the others in town.
(5)Nikhil O.
Cookies!!!!!! Mmmmmmmm
(5)Sarah A.
Can I just say this? You know what they say about women and chocolate? Well, lets just say this bakery did it gooooood! I had the rum ball. I was in awe with every bite. Literally. I don't remember having one that excellent. So rich and a very good size for the price. Just the right amount of rum too, not at all overpowering like some. I think my hubby was jealous of all my Ooh'ing and Ahh'ing, but I couldn't help it. He ended up getting a mocha type treat, but could not remember the name after we left. I tried a bit of his, and it was very delicious as well. I really liked that this bakery was open much later than the other bakeries, because we would have missed out! I definitely will be going back next time I am in Solvang!
(5)Kimmy H.
The Danish Waffle! On our pastry tour of Solvang, this was by far the best stop. That Danish Waffle (not a waffle and full of buttercream!) was divine. You'll also see it around town as a French Waffe, but make no mistake == Mortensen's is the best.
(4)Gary K.
Mortensen's - "The Lord of the Butter Rings" I've been coming to Solvang for years, and I have to say that Mortensen's bakery makes the best Danish Butter Rings in town. Flaky, crispy glazed pastry on the outside with almond paste and custard on the inside. They are pricey but you just have to splurge - they are a taste of heaven.
(4)Wolfy W.
Danish were OK, as I had the bear claw danish and coffee. My party had other danishes and were also to be of average bake goods. Somehow, they lack the polish and appetizing look of danishes I have accustom to from other bakeries.
(3)Victor G.
Service was Wack...almond croissant and cream cheese Danish are good
(3)Diane E.
Yummy pastries that helped tide me over for the long drive home!
(4)Maria L.
Maybe I should start off by saying that I had really high expectations for this place. When I came here on a Sunday afternoon there was a line of people waiting to get their pastries, good sign right? Wrong!! After patiently waiting my turn I asked the very friendly girl behind the counter to give me 3 of each of their two top sellers. The pastries looked very delicious but $4.00 each? must be worth it I thought and $24.00 later I was on my way. On my way back to LA I thought If I'm going to be stuck in traffic I might as well be eating something yummy so I reached into the box, took a bite and was kinda grossed out. The pastry had to be a few days old and had a nasty oily flavor. The Mortensens Danish Bakery is definitely NOT a place I will be visiting on my next trip to Solvang.
(1)Rose A.
One of the best parts of Solvang is their pastries. Mortensen's has a large variety and we liked everything we tried.
(4)Larry Z.
There's a rule in NYC. If there's a line, get in it even if you don't know what it is. That kind of sums up the reasons on why I ended up at this place. The line going into Mortensen's was steady and it seemed to be the most busy shop in Solvang. Once we were at the counter, the girl was very friendly and helpful with picking out items which Mortensen's was known for. Btw, the pastries can add up quickly! I can't remember the names to all of them, but all of the pastries were just blah. Authentic or not, it just wasn't very good. The napoleon hat was buttery and the chocolate was waxy. The Florentine was good, except it had some buttercream filling which marred the tasty caramelized cookies. The danishes were flaky and buttery, but was missing balance and flavor. We also picked up some coffee which was a mistake. The coffee is brewed and kept in coffee dispensing pumps, not to mention it was too weak and watered down. I've had strong teas in my life. Anyways, go to try but don't expect to come back because of love.
(2)Tere V.
There are 4 bakeries in Solvang. Mortensen's Bakery specializes in pastries (not bread or cake) and they're the best in town! Go to Olsen's for bread and go to The Solvang Bakery for cake. But Mortensen's bakers clearly have a passion for their delectable sweets and it shows in the presentation and the quality of the pastries. Most common questions: What's the difference between an apple STRUDEL and apple STRIP? Strudel is made from a puff pastry which is flakey, light, and drier. Strip is more dense, heavier, and gooey. No, there are no savory pastries. It's a traditional Danish bakery and it's all sweet. No, there are no sugar-free items for diabetics. It's a bakery! House specialty - Butter ring! You must try a piece but you have to buy the whole thing! Yummy!
(5)Mr. C.
Rasberry Danish pastry and the Buttercake... I have to be honest, walking in, and seeing the prices... I thought to myself, wow. Way overpriced. But as I took a bite into the delightful pastries, I changed my mind and thought, "Oh yeah. this was definitely worth it." Absolutely delish. Took some buttercake back home for friends and they were blown away as well. Glad we stopped by!
(5)IYelpFor U.
Great bakery with lots and lots of varieties to choose, and my favorite is the 'Napolean'. It is sweet, it is succulent, it is super rich and packs enough sugar to get me hyperactive for the day while strolling around Solvang! This is the only shop we come for Danish whenever we visit Solving and always ended up bringing a box home. The price is somewhat on the high side, but can you resist?

I live and work in Solvang. Mortensens Is my favorite bakery. If you love custard, the custard strip is what you want to order. I went gluten free this past year and to my surprise they have some delicious gluten free pastries!

As expected, the danishes at this Danish bakery are delicious. We especially enjoyed the cheese danish. Also as expected, the price is somewhat inflated given the swarm of tourists milling about.

This was a great bakery and the origanal danish was yummy! You just CANNOT go to Solvang and not get a danish thats like going to six flags just for the shops you just don't do that lol. I got the orginal danish I think it was $3 or $4 not too sure. but got to try it!! So yummy!

This was such a refreshment after a long drive from Palm Springs. The pastry was delicious, so I decided to bring some home with me and give to some friends to try. I'm European, and good Danish pastry is so hard to find in the US, but this spot is the one to remember! It was almost closing time, so I was served by the owners, and they were friendly, kind, and professional. I'm visiting Solvang again in April, and I will come to Mortensens Danish Bakery again, that's for sure!

Honestly, I'm surprised that this place has a handful of negative reviews. Like many other reviewers, I was Danish pastry naive until I went to Mortensens so I suppose my review is not the most expert review out there. What I AM an expert on? Sweets. I have a sweet tooth like you would not believe. I am the type of girl that can have a lengthy, in depth discussion on various types of chocolate. I buy my bf pints of Ben n Jerry's and then eat it all before he has a chance to even try a bite. I preplan my girl scout cookie order months in advance and scourer the grocery store shelves in preparation for the first site of Easter candy. You get the picture. About Mortensens' pastries??? OhMyGod. I ordered the Napoleon hat, a Sarah Bernhardt and a pistachio bar. I ate every last crumb!! The Sarah Bernhardt was a perfect pastry filled with the most delicious cream and topped with a fantastic chocolate ganache. The Napoleon was also filled with the perfect cream and slightly flaky. But my favorite was the pistachio bar!!! It was so unique and delicious, I even tried to look up recipes on line to recreate it (because I live two hours away from Mortensens) and have not had any success. I seriously am already craving these!!! I was so enamored with the pastries that as soon as I got home (LA), I went on line to check out potential local Danish bakeries. There is one downtown and I'm"m going to check it out this weekend! I'm hoping they have pistachio bars like Mortensens :) The other aspects I normally obsess over....the service? It was OK. The girls behind the counter were not friendly but they handed me my pastries and rung me up. The atmosphere? A bit on the cheesy side, which was in line with the rest of the establishments in the Danish-inspiried Solvang. It can be found on one of the main roads in Solvang. It sits among several other fun places to visit including ice cream stores, a charming book store and most importantly, wine tasting rooms! Strolling through Solvang, eating pastries, tasting wine and shopping for used books made for a great day!! (and be sure to order the pistachio bar)

So upon visiting this little Denmark-esque town we strolled upon this quaint bakery. "Mortensens Danish Bakery" was spotted across the cobble-stone street. We decided to walk on in, grab a few pastries and enjoy the late afternoon's cool weather with coffee and baked goods. -Chocolate "rum-ball" - tasted like fruit cake filled with rum (wow!) -Danish croissant filled with blueberry flavoring - Simple & Sweet (as is!) Despite the uber slow service, we were satisfied with our order. I was left with a little taste of Denmark. I enjoyed taking in the city while people-watching & sitting outside their patio which overlooked the other shops. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ 3/5 Ambiance - The mood, character, quality, tone, atmosphere. 2/5 Service -Helpful, accommodating, efficient, delivery and speed? 3/5 Food / Merchandise - Quality, taste, presentation. 4/5 Price - Reasonable, inexpensive, high priced? (Based on Irma's review rating rubric - static.px.yelp.com/photo… )

Our hotel gave us "breakfast" (pastry + drink, not what I call breakfast) coupons so we stopped in. The pastries looked a little sad, but we ordered some anyway. Everyone agreed that they were alright, but 1 hour later I just felt miserable. They were toooooo buttery I guess.
(2)T N.
The lines were a bit deceptive because you expect superb pastries. The Kringle's ($13.00+) was too sugary although the texture was good. The butter roll (also $13.00) was incredibly buttery. Basically it is slightly overpriced but that is because it is a tourist trap and the flavors are "maybe" authentic. For my own personal taste I think I prefer light pastries but not too sweet so I feel a bit guilty about this A-ok review---it's just my honest opinion that the sweets ARE VERY SWEET. Don't eat too much (^_^)
(3)Linda Z.
The cookies I picked up were very tasty. Rich, sugary, moist, and $15.00 for 9 cookies. I didn't even notice the package was a single layer of cookies when I purchased it. I assumed there was a second layer. Whoops. My bad. I can't be mad, tho. They are pretty good.
(4)Nilu r.
Terrible service. No choice of coffee but their regular watered down coffee that comes to your table slowly and not often enough. The pastry was sweet, not much of a surprise there. I am not really a danish fan, and I would not recommend this bakery to anyone mostly because of the lack of choice and the surly service.
(1)Tony L.
This bakery was located inside a lovely danish version brightly painted and well-maintained. Inside were a lot of others with three girls working; one settings the tables in their little cafe, and two behind the counter. They were impatient and young, and while people would look and one more experienced could see they weren't ready to order their goodies... they kept pestering the customers. Once you were helped though, they attitude was one of indifference... in fact, even before we paid we were already dismissed... they started talking to each other and I was dismissed without even a "thank you" or "enjoy your pastries". How rude. The prices were quite high and if you go down the street on the other side, there's another bakery with much-nicer counter help who will assist you plus the prices are a lot lower. I'd stay away from Mortensens. Appearances are everything and the store's employees lack the friendliness and tact to work in such a place.
(2)ReBecki P.
Always a go-to stop when in the area. Great for breakfast pastries and fresh cup of coffee or a bucket of cookies to go! Service is quick and friendly. My friend just gave me a gift box of 10 variety cookies and keeping them in the fridge, enjoying one a day, and savoring the delicious, dense cookies! Coconut with a raspberry filling, thumb print cookies with jam, chocolate dipped madelines, and I forget what other flavors I've already devoured.
(4)Glaciala A.
I asked a local merchant where was the best bakery in town, and they vehemently noted that the rest of the bakeries except for Mortensens were tourist traps. Thus, I went to Mortensens and tried a few different danishes and they were pretty good. The cheese in the danishes had a nice texture and so did the fruit. With more updated interior, I might be willing to rate higher, but just for the food, it was solid and I'm a fan.
(4)Claire F.
Came to visit Solvang and so of course we had to go try the pastries! This was the second bakery we went to. There was barely anyone there and many people came in, look at the pastries and the prices and quickly left. Got an apricot and lemon danish. They tasted okay, but they were pretty expensive - $3.75 for one... I really didn't like the service because they were unwelcoming high school or college students. When we sat down after ordering our pastries, they didn't even give us a cup of water or anything. This is definitely not a place to dine-in!
(2)Teri C.
Every time I swing by Solvang, I'm all about the French waffles. (I don't know why I'm only looking for them in Danish bakeries. Then again, I've never really noticed them in a French bakery.) Two long flaky pastries sandwiching white cream and raspberry jam, what a lovely bite! They are going for $2.25 nowadays, and I always grab a dozen to go home with it. I also tried this Pistachio tart thing. It was sweet, with a nice aftertaste. However, my companion was not so impressed. I have yet to try their other goodies.
(4)Chris O.
This review is really for the Custard Strip being this best pastry I have eaten , ever (a real treat if you get them warm early in the morning. I had these when I was a kid and this is one of the three places I stop by when ever I am anywhere near my old stomping grounds. I don't know if the service is still good because all I do is come in and get a whole strip to go, and damn it's tasty. I then usually head to Ingeborgs down the street which is terrific as well.
(5)C N.
Craving for the true Dane's danishes, I stopped by here and ordered custard and an apple danish. The pastries are peculiarly rolled with pepper, which I found to be quite odd. The filling's taste is not too sweet, which is a PLUS! But honestly, the experience overall was not too great for me, maybe for those that have not tasted a danish in Denmark would find it spectacular, but after having so many over there, this did not excite my tastebuds. FYI, the danishes are 3.35 each, its a bit cheaper at the other stores with more variety.
(1)Samuel J.
Delicious pastries and hot chocolate! Perfect for an overcast drizzly day.
(4)Amy D.
Big selection of yummy and fresh pastries at decent prices. They also have a nice little sitting area if you can't wait to pig out on your selection. I know there are plenty of Danish bakeries in Solvang, but I always end up here.
(5)Kenny B.
I have to agree with Betty B on this one. The girls there looked like they would rather have been anywhere but there. Anywhere! Sorry you have to work here little girl, but damn, you don't need to be a jerk about things! I just wanted some tasty Danish baked goods, I smiled, asked for items in a polite manner, and even said "thank you". You scowled at me, barked "what do you want", and then didn't even tell me how I'd get my coffee! The only good customer service was the one (1), girl who was frantically trying to pour everyone's coffee, tea, hot chocolate in the entire place while your 3 ugly stepsisters stood around text messaging on your phone. She was nice, polite, friendly, and should be an example to the others! Thats why I left her a couple bucks as a tip instead of the jerks at the counter. Besides that, I didn't think the pastry was that great. There was a spice in it that I think make the flavors just off a little bit. And the variety for a bakery of its size I found lacking. I'd probably try a different bakery when I'm in Solvang again, but if I see the nice coffee server, I just might walk in to give her a couple extra bucks.
(3)Dth S.
everything here tastes very buttery&flakey&sweet&creamy&yummy!! to me danish pastries all seem the same (described above) &i luv them all equally so i don't mind if i don't find too much variety here.....&being that it's in solvang, they're all super friendly&helpful of course!!
(4)Stephen E.
Get a tub of the cookies and eclaire - you won't be disappointed.
(5)J W.
Almond croissant needed more almond filling; maybe if they make it smaller and keep the filling same amount. It was nice and flakey though. Chocolate rum ball was pretty good. Other then that nothing was that good.
(3)Sarah H.
Go for the cookies and the pistachio cup/squares not for the service. Went on a Sunday and the line was a bit long and very out of order. The girl that helped me wasn't all that friendly though I saw others that were. :( bad service whilst getting sweets puts a damper on things.
(4)Chynna Y.
I came here three times on one visit to Solvang because my cousins LOVE the napoleon hats here. They are a lot yummier and a little less (pricewise) than Olsen's bakery. Their selection isn't as big as Olsen's but everytime I come here, they're always bringing out freshly baked goodies. The service isn't great, it's what brought my rating down. Their waitresses seem distracted and have a lot of side conversations with each other. Sometimes they ask you to repeat what you said. It's also really hot in there. I give it 5-10 degrees warmer than the outside.
(3)Beverly T.
i'm not really into danishes, so I wasn't too enthusiastic about trying one at this place. But I felt like eating a danish is what you do at Solvang. I got a cinnamon swirl danish, which turned out to be dry and seemed like it sat around a couple of days. The good thing about it was that it wasn't overly sweet. The price was more expensive by a dollar or so than Danish Mill. If something is good, even though it's not on my usual 'to eat' list, I would still give it a fair rating. However, this danish wasn't nearly as good as other danishes I have had in the past.
(2)Michael N.
Great bakery right in the heart of Solvang. You'll have a tough time selecting from a huge selection of mouth watering pastries. I don't think you can go wrong here. And friendly service to boot.
(5)Elizabeth C.
Good coffee, tasty but unexciting baked goods. Rather expensive for what you end up getting. Still, three stars. I'm a sucker for free refills.
(3)Carol H.
Our hotel presented us with vouchers for bakery at Mortensens for each morning we were there. The bakery was so-so. We were able to sit out on the patio with our dogs and the wait staff did bring us coffee and refills. They did not seem very happy to serve us outside on such a brisk morning. We would probably not go back to this bakery again. We would try one of the numerous other bakeries in town.
(3)Anne N.
This was my 1st (and probably last) time trying danish pastries, and they're not really my cup of tea. I bought a box with 9 different cookies and so far, they all taste pretty much the same to me! Very similar soft/ crumbly consistency, and super sweet! Danish Pastries aren't very cheap either! Nearly $5 bucks for a cream puff and $15 bucks for 9 small cookies! YIKES!
(2)fran d.
very friendly and helpful staff. on top of things. mortensens is about as complete as most bakeries in town. that is to say they have all matter of danish style cookies, pastries and oh those giant bear claws! my goodness. the place is clean and well run but it is on the expensive side and some of the cookies didn't strike me as fresh as they could be although i was assured they are. so i'll give them the benefit of the doubt. good place to have a pastry on the go but beware, this place isn't for those that lack a sweet tooth.
(3)Kay L.
Yummy Éclair and giant custard puff. Service was good even when they were really busy. Wish I were in town longer so I could try everything.
(4)Kristen R.
Mortensen's in GREAT! I'm 100% Danish so I am very familiar with Danish Pastries, having grown up eating them my whole life. I find A LOT of these reviews hilarious because most the people who give it a lower review are CLEARLY not Danish or use to Danish style pasties. We use butter, a lot of it, and almond paste in most our recipes. If you are a typical American use to manufactured "Danish" pastries, yeah, you are in for a something different, in my opinion something better, fresh and delightful! I attended Cal Poly in SLO, about 1 hour from this place so I would go about once a month a stock up on my usual pastries. They are very good, traditional in style and reasonably priced. Overall, they make great Danish pastries!!!
(5)evert o.
This bakery had a nice selection of treats. Everything on display appeared so appetizing. Some of the cookies appeared to be high price, but I guess it must be the tourist tax.
(3)Ashley And Mostafa S.
This bakery had the most amazing Danish cookies and pastries! We bought an entire box of assorted butter cookies and they were all amazing; fresh and yummy. The entire display case looked amazing and I will definitely sit down with some pastries and coffee during my next visit to Solvang!
(4)Alex S.
The coffee was ok, the cinnamon rolls came with raisins even though I asked for one without, and the eclaire was too much.
(3)Stacey P.
This place has by far the best butter cookies I have ever tasted. It's worth a visit from an hour away just to pick up a bucket of them. I haven't tasted any of their other pastries because when I walk in the shop all I can think of are these cookies but the display had a lot of beautiful and yummy looking things in it. Also the service is always friendly and helpful. A definite go-to spot when visiting for me.
(5)Chris F.
Delicious pastries and a wonderful setting to enjoy it! I had the chocolate rum ball and danish bread. The rum ball was chocolately and had just enough rum flavor to let you know it was there. The pastry was flaky and just sweet enough. What a great find!
(4)Angel A.
My husband lived in Solvang as a child and has early memories of walking to Mortensen's on Sundays for the amazing danishes. We just visited for the first time since he was 6, and walked over to see if the pastries were as good as he remembered. From behind the glass counter we picked three that looked good - a swedish waffle, a custard ball and an almond-custard danish. Unlike many childhood memories that dim in the face of reality, this place did not disappoint. Though all three were unique, they shared a rich buttery taste and perfect flakiness that's missing from most pastries. The process for good pastry is time-consuming, involving repeated freezing and working, so most places don't bother. It's good to see a place that still takes the time to produce a high-quality product. We sat on the patio and watched the suckers at the restaurant next door who were eating scrambled eggs and toast when they could be having this incredible pastry instead. The place loses one star for the lousy coffee and a more limited selection than I expected (only half the counter was full) but the pastries themselves deserve 5 stars.
(4)Jennifer T.
Very delicous danishes! Crispy, sugary, and flaky on the outside and warm chewy apple deliciousness within. We got a complimentary danish breakfast from the Inn we were staying at and decided to redeem the sucker before going horseback riding. The danish was soo yummy! The orange juice was bitter and concentrated.
(3)erika g.
so delicious - try the apple strudel!
(5)Sasha T.
I'm big on friendly customer service. The girl taking our order just acted downright miserable... No excuse when we're being nice, plus there are no other customers in the whole dang place! Would it really kill you to be polite or nice? If you're ever in Solvang, you can skip this place and go right to either Solvang Bakery or Olsen's.
(1)Makoto N.
Mortensens bakery is such an awesome place. I love the way that they make their pastries. They are so buttery and flakey and flavorful. It happened to be 104 degrees the day I stopped so we didn't hang out in Solvang too long but I had to stop here. It's the best bakery but pricey. We got a dozen of the butter cookies with the apricot and raspberry jelly on the top. I'd give it more stars but the price is too high for that. If u go to solvang stop by and savor a cookie or two with some coffee but don't order too many or you will break the bank!
(4)Georgia C.
Wonderful pastries and very friendly, attentive staff!! The coffee was very good!
(5)Mariel C.
Child - everytime I am in Solvang, the last stop is Mortensens Danish Bakery. I buy a crap ton of pastries and cookies and fun things and bring them home. A word of warning: be sure to buy twice as many pastries as you really want...because everyone that sees them will eat at least one. I don't even know what most of them are called. Just get a variety of items and taste them all. I am drooling just thinking of them.
(4)Sky Y.
There's a huge selection of pastry goods here. I picked up a few petits fours and they were insanely good! They were kind of rich and delicate tasting at the same time. My favorites were the almond bar dipped in chocolate with a raspberry jam filling and a macaroon bar with raspberry filling. The price is $2.25 per petit four which I thought was rather reasonable. If I'm ever in Solvang again, this is a must go to place for me.
(5)Wendy H.
Any trip to Solvang wouldnt be complete without a yummy treat from Mortensens. I got there cookie sampler and it was scruptious!
(5)Jayme K.
I came back here last week when back in town. Used to be a local and would stop by here often for goodies. The treats are still good and there is certainly a wide selection of pastries, cookies, claws, etc, but good grief are they over-priced! We got four things for roughly $17, and they won't even let you use their restroom anymore! I know tourism and frequent bathroom use by them sucks, but if that's your "audience" so to speak, then accommodate them! I'm sorry but bringing two little kids in here for treats and not be able to wash their hands afterward, or use the toilet after washing all that sweet down with so much water, is unacceptable in a place that averages $4-5/pastry. The nearest restroom?? Two blocks away in a nasty outhouse. No thanks!
(3)Julie S.
I have been to Solvang a couple of times but haven't tried any baked goods until now. I wandered into this bakery because I wanted to bring back a gift to my office and thought the Butter Cookies would be a good choice. And they were! I am not a fan of butter cookies but when I tried them, I was thrilled--they have flavor! And there are three layers of cookies separated by a paper cushion (I bought the bucket) and several different flavors. My favorite was the cinnnamon but they were all good--nothing like dry flavorless store-bought. They really go well with tea or coffee. I also bought an apple and a raspbery pastry-turnover type dessert and the nice young lady suggested, when I said we'd have these the next day, that I put them on a baking sheet and then bake them for no more than 6 minutes and they'd taste fresh--and she was right! The winner of the two was the raspberry but both good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. There is no rhyme or reason to how you approach the counter-jump right in to order, don't be shy.
(4)D F.
Some of the best pastries I've had in the States. Great prices, good service.
(5)Spratt M.
Mortensen's either earns three stars, or drops two stars, for being the only bakery in town to still make its employees wear stupid pinafores and aprons with danish rickrack trim. HA HA YOU STUPID CHEERLEADERS! WHO'S THE FREAK NOW HUH! Pastries are OK but I think Olsen's is better, and Olsen's butter cookie tubs have cute pictures on them while Mortensen's do not. If you are a sucker for freshness you should not get the macaroon surprise. The surprise is that they use day-old pastries for these and just cover them up in almond paste. Don't hold it against M's though since every bakery in town does this.
(3)Lauren R.
I ordered: 3 almond croissants, 2 bear claws, 2 pistachio cups, 2 horshoe marzipans and 2 vanilla macaroons = $28.00, so it's pretty pricey I think. Out of the ones I tried, I highly recommend the almond croissant and bear claw - soooo good!
(3)Ken J.
I have only one word to say about them, as I come there for only one thing, my favorite pastry food in the world: KRINGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm salivating as I write this, thinking longingly at this precious delicacy of theirs which, IMHO, is the BEST in Solvang!!!
(5)Steve S.
Mortensen's is my second-favorite bakery in town, behind the Danish Mill. The location is such that you will pass it 4-5 times if you're walking around town. Like the other bakeries, they do great things with raspberry filling; I always leave here with a heavy box of pastries, and it's a scheduled stop when I come to Solvang.
(3)S F.
OMG! It was a discusting pastery & Soda! I mean seriously! I paid $16.69 for 3 piecies. It's like I tossed my money in the garbage! Very unprofessional pastry from unprofessional ppl! If I used yelp before that I would have had an idea but any ways! first and last time, definitely don't go there if you care about $$$
(1)Jason F.
Prepare for sugar rush! This charming bakery offers Delicious pastries not to mention a killer rum ball! They have a wide selection of sweets to satisfy any palate. The service was good and so was the sweets! A must have if your hitting up Solvang!
(4)Rick K.
Mortensens is my favorite bakery in Solvang. It is so homey and it's oh so lovely to sit around, sample their pastries and sip on a cup of coffee at a fresh afternoon. Definetely try their Cream Puff, which is the size of your head... well, not quite so big, but you get the idea. Their cookies are also so yummy... yeah. I had enough sugar to make me sleepy... that's the mark of a great bakery.
(4)Trisha T.
I agree with the other here!! I wasn't thrilled with the customer service. I too was the only one in the bakery, and the two girls acted as if they could care less. I do not think I'm a picky customer, I hope not!! : ) I won't go back, unless I see a different attitude.
(2)reese w.
I had a major hankering for some kind of apple something or other and Mortensen totally fit the bill. I know that the Danes tend to love and overuse the whole almond deal, but goddamn if I don't like almond flavour stuff so much (sorry Danes). Anyway, I got a piece of their apple strip. Not only was it tasty and apple-y, but it wasn't so strong on the additional almond paste in the pastry itself. Yeah. That was good. SO GOOD.
(4)Matthew C.
Best bakery in Solvang! The raspberry squares, napoleon hats, and the Danish butter cookies with coconut are always good choices. I use to come here all the time in the summer just to get my pastry fix. Don't waste your time at the other bakeries in town, go to Mortensens!
(5)Molly B.
The most delicious danishes! I especially recommend cherry, custard or raspberry. They are about $3.50 or so each, which seems a little steep, but they are so fresh its worth it. We always get ours to go, so as to minimize our exposure to the unhappy servers here. The coffee is definitely crappy, skip it.
(4)Maome S.
We stopped here on our way back from Hearst Castle last year. Make sure you pick up a bucket of cookies. I noticed some flies sitting on some of their pastries... not too impressed. But I guess what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.
(4)Shane B.
good pistachio square. average creme puff. they seem to stay open later than the other bakeries which is definitely a plus.
(3)Isaiah N.
The pastries here are all right, given the use of almonds in most of the baked goods (if you are allergic to nuts, oh man that's a bummer). The apple strudel is ok as well. However, it's not exactly memorable or tasty as the Olsen's bakery in my opinion, but at least the sweetness is just right. Enough said.
(3)Jenna B.
The pastries are overpriced but Solvang is a tourist town so I wasn't too surprised. The danishes were quite large so I guess for $4 ea. it's worth it?! And a small container of small cookies was $10.95. I walked out of there spending $30 on baked goods! Sheesh! Quality wise, they were buttery and sugary. You know, the typical Dutch pastry/dessert.
(2)Mishee D.
Oh my god! The waffle battle certainly goes to Mortensens. Buttery, flaky goodness. I bought waffles and a couple of Danish pastries. Glad I was able to escape the place with something. Folks were snapping up boxes after boxes of their danishes! Once I sank my teeth on my danish pastries, I instantly understood why people were buying boxes of pastries and I wanted to go back and buy more. Too bad we were already 50 miles away! Certainly one of my must stop places when in Solvang!
(4)Pixie D.
We had been to Solvang twice before, and had gone this time with the plan to pick up my favorite pistachio squares at Mortensen's (and also the Sarah Bernhardts - divine!). It my favorite bakery in town, and I was so excited. Until this trip the only reason I would have hesitated to give 5 stars is they wouldn't or couldn't give me the recipe*, which I cannot find online! I noticed that treats were cheaper than at the other bakeries, and the items I liked were as good or better here. The last time we were there a man had made a special trip from LA for their cream rings, and loved them so much he bought one for us too, as he thought everyone should try it! (Update: hubby could not find cream rings at any of the bakeries on this trip - must be out of fashion!) Update: Just got back, yes, this time we were waited on by the rude younger gal. She kept ignoring us, and when I finally spoke up she was unresponsive and continued to load up the display cases, making comments about how she would help me when we were ready, although we had been ready the whole time she just kept ignoring us. She continually avoided making eye contact, and every time she was done with a tray and I thought she would finally wait on us she just picked up another one. She could tell we were getting annoyed and chose to respond with those comments rather than help us. After she finally waited on us, squishing the paper around the pastries, she turned her back without a thank you. I noticed in this town that when it comes to the ones who are rude to begin with, when you try to be nice and smile and ask politely, that seems to make them even ruder. I am still giving this location some stars simply because their pastries are $2 a piece instead of $2.50 like everywhere else. I was jealous of the people who, like the yelper below, got a coupon from their inn for danish at Mortensen's. The pastry baked up very tall. The girl was rude to them when they were trying to use their coupon (of course!), and I thought they might feel bad, so I told them they were lucky in comparison, because our inn had cruddy danish that looked like it came from Safeway. About the Mortensen's pastry, I also saw croissants that looked about the size of footballs! They were still on the baking rack and the girl had already turned away from us before I could ask her how much they were, but now I regret not trying one. I think if they had a robot serving system it would be more friendly. The pastries themselves are worth the trip; it's just the service that turns people off. *9/8/09 update: I did eat my last take-home treat today and then called the number on the box for one more try at figuring out the recipe. I got an extremely nice, older lady on the phone who described how they layer the pistachio squares, so I at least have a shot at trying to reverse engineer the recipe!! Her friendliness has caused me to give back one of the stars I took away when we were waited on by the younger gal. She said they can also ship their baked goods, but I want to give making some myself a shot.
(4)Christine L.
Ordered 3 tins of cookies yesterday with Nancy. She was extremely helpful and responsive. I asked her if she could possibly get the cookies in the mail so we could receive them today. She kindly obliged and the cookies arrived today before noon. My mother is thrilled!
(4)Anosha S.
a few pastries you must get on your pit stop for the road!! -cheese danish -pistascio bar -macaroon worth the extra mile off the 101
(3)Roxanne B.
the napoleon was really sweet. i was going to get a tub of butter cookies but it seemed to pricey compared to olsen's. i did get a chocolate cupcake with pink frosting, and i asked for it to go, but i wanted to keep the frosting in tact. i asked for a pink box, and the boy behind the counter refused to give it to me. so he gave me a sandwich bag and i just asked him to jus keep it seperate. he wasn't very nice. i should just stick to olsen's. it is the best.

A big pastry selection- they even sell the whole bars if the slices aren't enough for you. I tried a few Danishes- although decent, didn't really impress. Also what is up with all the businesses in Solvang not having bathrooms? Very inconvenient!
(3)Monique H.
Really great hot chocolate. The bf loved his bearclaw. My cherry danish was way too sweet for me. Too much frosting! But the rest was great. But how do you eat around frosting?
(4)Jennifer S.
i have a confession to make... i love sweets. i love desserts. i love pastries. i love anything sweet and yummy, especially when mother nature is around the corner ... but mortensens was a bit extreme ... pastries overall were a lil bit too sweet for my taste buds.... its yummy but a lil bit TOO sweet... :X ack. staff is friendly and majority of their pastries are $3.25 each. YEES! EACH!!! talk about deadly!
(3)Ryan T.
I can't say YUM enough. picked up some treats here; would have picked up more had it not been for my scratchy throat. I have come here as a child and when I can, get some treats to send others. They even have kringle! I can't say whether it's as good as the variety you can find in Minnesota (since I've never been), but it's there for the taking. Will have to visit again sometime soon.
(4)Noah C.
I bought a big - and I mean BIG - apple streudle from this bakery, along with a couple apple turnovers, a cherry boat, some almond danishes and a few other choice pastries. They were all delicious, as every bit as good as any other Solvang bakery. Their prices are a bit higher than other places, I think, and I also have to deduct a star for not having a bathroom around, but the baked goods were awesome - and that's all that really matters isn't it?
(4)Alfonso E.
In a town where you'll be in front of a bakery establishment practically every twenty paces, I'm not sure I would have ever found or bothered with Mortensen's were it not for free daily vouchers I received from the Royal Copenhagen inn. So my girlfriend and I used these vouchers on a blueberry boat, bear claw, apple turnover and a cinnamon pastry. Not bad. Flaky and crisp stuff, not greasy, with a tastful amount of the jammy stuff.
(3)Dee F.
Of all the places in the village, I thought this had the best pastries.
(4)Peter T.
Mortensen's Bakery is the best bakery in Solvang. Danish is fantastic, prices are fine, for the quality. Also they own the Greenhouse Cafe next door, great coffee, great service, great Danish and American food. The service at both places was great, young and full of energy. A must stop at both when you are in Solvang.
(5)Kui T.
I was disappointed when I walked in to find that there was not much to choose from because the shelves were half empty. Maybe we were too early in the day (11:00 or too late), but the place was not even packed. But anyway the apple danish and streudel was so flaky and buttery, hard to compare to an average baker anywhere else. This is the place to be if you are into authentic danish pastry.
(3)Annie y.
amazing danishes!!!!! we got the custard and apple danishes and they were out-of-this-world! not much seating but definitely one of the larger bakeries in solvang. you have to check it out if you're there....and the prices were decent. went here again yesterday....and again, was not disappointed! i tried the blueberry and cherry danishes....both were flaky deliciousness in my mouth!
(5)Jennifer B.
Love this place, my favorite bakery in town for many years. They have these pistachio squares no one else makes and are to-die-for, especially if you pop em in the fridge so that the chocolate gets nice and crisp...
(5)Jennifer F.
The food at this bakery is excellent! There are always a ton of people in line, but the lines move fast. The customer service is nice and the pastries are sooooooo good! They are a little pricey, but definitely worth it! A nice little treat after walking around Solvang!
(5)Lynne O.
bought some cream puffs back to my bf in Berkeley and he was happy as white on rice.
(5)Matt W.
They had some good looking pastries at this place, but we must have picked the wrong one. We picked our personal favorite, chocolate eclaire. Believe or not, we got a few bites in to it, and it had some cherry filling in it. Yuk!!! What a way to waste a great pastry. Plus it cost $5!
(3)Deirdre L.
Delicious baked goods in solvang My friend and I were tipsy because of all the wine tastings and we needed a quick carb load. The chocolate pastries were extremely flavorful. This place was truly delicious.
(4)Lisa S.
Homeade Danish pastries .... Need I say more?! This place has been around for years and is always busy. I always hit this bakery up when I arrive and when I leave. There's something for everybody here. I am a sucker for the pastries with the jam in the center (raspberry is my favorite). The average range is $3.95 and up and well worth the price. This is not your typical Starbucks or Costco plastic wrap Danish. This is homemade daily!!! Everything about this bakery is buttery and sugary goodness!!!!!
(4)Ronny S.
hi-ya! The bakery is so good. They have all kinds of Danish pastries that really hit the spot when it comes carbs! The prices are high, but again you're in Solvang and supposed to enjoy the experience. Seating is available kinda--inside (small), but outside is perfect. The customer service is good and the selection is easy to figure out with clear uncluttered display cases. I really could go HAM on the sweets there so I have no complaints. Overall 5 stars because it's so good it hurts.
(5)PJ C.
We stopped for a Kringle but that was way too big for just two so we bought a custard almond pastry and it was delicious. Many good looking selections but not this time. The town of Solvang is one of the weirdest tourist towns I've seen - they've taking the faux Danish thing to an extreme.
(4)Stephanie C.
One of the charms of Solvang is all of the quaint bakeries around town that suck you in with the sweet smell of pastries. Mortensen's Bakery was the closest bakery to our hotel so we made a couple stops here during our weekend in Solvang. Mortensen's offers tons of traditional Danish pastries, cookies, apple strudel, and other sweets. I had one of their apple cinnamon danishes and it was perfect. The pastry was very light and flakey and the filling was a mixture of sweet and tart. My only wish is that they offered to warm up the pastries. Three pastries cost us about $10.50 so it's a little on the expensive side but you are in Solvang and it's super touristy, so what do you expect? Service was quick and the actual bakery is spacious. There were lines almost out the door both times we went in so keep that in mind. If you're spending the weekend in Solvang, checking out the bakeries is a must!
(3)Tim S.
Meh. My wife had never been to Solvang before, so we decided to walk around town for a bit after breakfast. This bakery was closest to where we parked, so it was the one where we got our pastries. I went with a raspberry danish, 2 raspberry owl eyes, and one "double cookie" or something like that. Total was $10.50! WOW! I was shocked at the price. The pastries were fairly good, but not $10.50 good! The best one was the double cookie one. It was 2 butter cookies with chocolate cream filling in the middle, then dipped in chocolate. Even then, I wouldn't come back because they were so expensive and not worth it in my opinion.
(2)Kevin W.
Danish pastry tour stop number 1! Dog friendly. One of the bigger bakeries. Always crowded. Service was nice. Seating area if you want to eat inside. Cinnamon Crisp - $3 - It was like a churro chip but not as good as a normal churro. Pistachio Square - $2.65 - Loved the pistachio flavor. The almonds added a nice texture. It was pretty sweet.
(3)Mary O.
Danish Waffles!! Come here solely for that pastry alone. They're nothing remotely close to an actual waffle, more like long crisp logs filled with raspberry jam and buttercream. They're slightly chewy, crispy, sweet, and so freakin delicious!!! Have never tried anything quite like these before. All other pastries were underwhelming. The woman working the counter happened to be the sweetest thing ever who filled our pastry bag with a few additional free items as we had arrived closer to closing time. After trying several items would definitely recommend sticking to the waffles and packing a box of them to go since you won't really find them anywhere in L.A.
(4)Balon N.
I wish I could write something about the food or coffee here but I sat done for 15-20 min and waiting for someone to approach me and offer coffee, as is customery in such Establishments. Nothing like that happened. Only the tables near by were serviced (they were locals apparently and since I wasn't, I was considered air). At some point someone asked me if I ordered and I got my hopes high that coffee will be coming soon. 5 min later I was still waiting. So I left.
(1)Niti B.
Delish Danish delights! Town of Solvang couldn't be complete with out a Danish bakery with authentic treats. With cases filled with plenty of sweet choices and coffee this is a gem of a spot that can't be skipped when you visit the quant town. Had the Danish waffle. It was crisp wafers sandwiched with raspberry and butter cream. I felt it was a bit to sweet for my liking but still a great selection as long as you had a glass of water or coffee.
(4)Robyn J.
Mortensen's is my favorite bakery in Solvang. Every time we visit this is our last stop. I love coffee and they have the smoothest coffee I have ever had. So two times a year we stop in Solvang, shop, eat at the Red Viking and then end our trip with lots of caffeine and a Butter Ring. The Butter Ring is filled with yummy pastry, custard and marzipan. It is so rich and sweet you have to have it with coffee. Sometimes when I want a Butter Ring and I will not be making it to Solvang I have the option of having it shipped to me. How wonderful is that?? The staff is always nice. It is really fast paced in the bakery but that is because hundreds of people are funneling through all day long and there are lots of crazy tourists to accommodate. I wouldn't take it personally.
(5)Poppy S.
Seven dollars for a chocolate eclair. HIGHWAY ROBBERY. The people that work here are not even friendly. Why would I want to buy him a thing here? You got it right... I wouldn't. The cost to buy each of my children a cake as a snack, would be the cost of a meal somewhere nice.
(2)Wendy M.
Wow their Danishes are good! Butter cookies great a delicious Danish bakery you can taste the real butter used! Recommend stopping and taking some home!
(5)Sharr K.
Exploring quaint little bakeries was one of the highlights of visiting Solvang. Mortensen's was super busy and packed with people. All the pastries looked amazing. I ended up getting the Pistachio Square because they had free samples of it. It was very overwhelming since they had so many different pastries and sweets. I also had a bite of my friend's Apple Danish. I don't remember anything being spectacular or memorable. It was a nice "sweets" stop while walking around Solvang. The service was prompt. I felt rushed out of there....definitely a hustle and bustle type of atmosphere. We sat outside on the bench while we enjoyed the sweets.
(3)Rebecca T.
My family and I were driving up to Avila Beach and were struck with the dreaded "sweet tooth" so I suggested we stop in Solvang to grab a snack. In fair disclosure we were going to go to another bakery but this was closer to where we parked. What a happy accident on our part. The staff working there (late 30's gentleman) was beyond kind. You could tell he sincerely enjoyed his job and made small talk with all the customers, answered any questions, made sure we had everything we needed, etc. I ended up ordering a "cringle" and it was TO DIE FOR! Nom nom nom ! My boyfriend's family normally does a special order for cringle during the holidays and this was even better than that! Definitely a nice little stop if you are in the area.
(5)Ruby M.
This place is totally cute. I didn't get a chance to try anything because as I was about to pay I spotted a fly at this bakery here in Solvang too. The pastries looked good.
(2)Diana M.
Just returned from a weekend in Solvang and my only regret is that we didn't try Mortensen's first! Our hotel included breakfast at another Danish bakery down the street, so we ended up going there twice. Then, just before leaving town, I popped into Mortensen's just to take a peek, not intending to indulge in any more danishes... well that was impossible once I stepped in. The bakery actually SMELLS better than the others, and by that I mean that you can smell REAL butter. The baked goods here are top quality for sure, and I knew that before even taking a single bite - you can smell and see it when you walk in. I couldn't resist, so bought a custard almond slice, Napoleon hat, and two thumbprint cookies for the road. Wow.... these have to be the best pastries in town. I live in LA and am seriously going to take a trip up to Solvang again just to get more of these pastries. For those reviewers who complain about the slightly higher prices, it is worth it not only for the taste, but the higher quality ingredients (read: real butter instead of artery-clogging hydrogenated vegetable fat). Delicious and not to be missed!
(5)K C.
Extremely average with bad, rushed service. I know you're busy but really? Anyway, the pastries themselves are nothing to be raved about. Have you ever been to Denmark? Or anywhere else in Northern Europe? This is not how Danish pastry tastes guys. This is how fake-Danish-town for need-a-weekend-getaway-from-reality pastry tastes. Crumb sucked. The filling was cloyingly sweet. I love pastries, I love sweet and really this is no way to go. Sorry! Ambiance- cute, but very made up and I say that about all of Solvang. You're overselling it. I absolutely love visiting real micro-cultures (Asian, European, Amish, Indian, Native Indian you name it!) in this giant awesomeness that is the US but I don't like this over-selling of a culture to stay afloat. Not fun at all.
(2)Anne A.
We eat here we bring some pastries home to LA. Always fresh and always delicious apple strudels. It's out favorite stop in Solvang.
(4)Jasmin M.
Mmmmm.... So yummy! Really it was fresh, delicious and really great service. What a really cute place.
(4)Crystal I.
My mom and I split a blueberry danish. So GOOD!! Light and flakey. Coffee was alright. Could have been a little stronger. The place was cute and cozy.
(4)Christine T.
Danish Pastries - delish! Nice seating area, plenty of tables/chairs to sit down. My husband and I both liked the Apple Danish the best! My daughter likes the Owl eye cookie which is a almond pastry filled cookie with raspberry jelly on top. We also had to buy some for the road! The pastries are not too sweet but I always like to have my pastries with green tea or coffee.
(4)Fatima K.
We went up to the SF area from LA w my in laws and it was 2 mins until 7pm on Sunday. We thought they might like driving through Solvang. All the larger bakeries closed at 7pm or earlier but this one was open until 7:30pm. Everything except the cheese Danish (4/5 I would get this again) was WAY too sweet. It was so sweet that it wasn't even good. -The marzipan horn cookie seemed like it was straight sugar. I couldn't really taste the almond all the much. 2/5 The butter cookies with raspberry and apricot were good but the middles were unnaturally sweet. 4/5 The choc cream puff with custard tasted like a croissant dough filled with heavy custard cream and stopped with that glaze that they put on choc donuts. It just wasn't good. 2.5/5 The almond bear claw was just too sweet, it has overly sweet almond paste and then had a glaze. Just too much going on. 3/5 The pistachio square looked pretty but there was nothing pistachio-y about it. The whole thing was made out of marzipan and the middle layer was just colored green. 2.5/5 The coffee wasn't good, it was weak and kind of watery. 2/5 It was pricey in my opinion. 4 small cookies, 2 claws, 1 Danish, 1 pistachio square, 1 cream puff, I coffee, 1 iced tea and 1 small horn cookie=$40.00!!! It may sound like a lot of items but they fit very loosely in a small box. The cookies were almost $2/cookie! They were a LOT smaller than the palm of my hand. Anyways if you're in the area and you want to stop by a bakery there are many good ones in the area they just close earlier. *** also there's no restroom. They said that we would have to go to the park on around the corner! Really ?! We just stopped at a fast food place on the way back. Not that good. Really pricey. The blue tin at the grocery store is better.
(3)Tzarina W.
What should you order here?? Bear claw, raspberry almond cream filling pastry, Danish eclair and apple turnover was boxed to go in a pink box. All of them were pretty tasty. You can tell there was a good amount of butter love for the pasty layers while the fillings for each pastry were perfect amounts. Sorry - forgot to take a pic before eating them. :(
(4)Sam V.
The pastries at this place are exceptional, everything is really excellent but they come at VERY expensive prices, the small danish are nearly 5$, really expensive but it's worth to save your money and try a least one or two. No prices are displayed so make sure to ask before having a bad surprise when you pay. Prefer the big strudels (~13$) or big Butter rings (~15$) much more reasonably priced. Must try: Butter rings and pistachio bars. I repeat you must try it.
(4)Jinky T.
This store has thus Victorian chic going on in their interiors. You will like the ultra feminine look in pink and white interiors. The lady that helped us suggested that I go for the pistacio square. Which by looking at it, it's enticing. I bought one piece and danish cookies. I love the Danish one ---taste like butter and dainty. However, unlike other guest who came here I didn't like the saccharine taste of the pistacios square. Too sweet for me. One taste it went straight to my brain. I like my pastry tasty but not too sweet.
(3)Andrea P.
Stopped in here on a whim: never thinking that as a gluten free person I would be able to actually get a pastry... But I did! We had a small buffet! Macaroons, almond cookies, mocha cake and other delights! Gluten free sweet treats are available!
(5)Ruth C.
Wonderful bakery and a great place to rest up and fill up after walking round the town! The selection of pastries is extensive-something to suit all taste buds! The ONLY reason we are giving it 4 stars and not 5 is because it is more of a bakery/take out than a cafe so the drink selection is limited. Otherwise the staff and service is wonderful and the pastries are to die for!
(4)Ashley K.
I somehow end up in Solvang a couple times a year when I'm in the area with other people (they always seem to want to see Solvang). I'm half Danish, my mother was born and raised in Denmark so I'm SUPER spoiled when it comes to pastries. Unfortunately, once I found out I was allergic to wheat a few years ago, a lot of pastries were out of the question, BUT good ol Danes use almond flour/paste quite often, making many of the cookies/pastries inherently gluten and wheat-free, bravo! I've been to two other bakeries in Solvang which I found on Yelp for gluten-free options, and while both places had several gluten-free treats to choose from, Mortensen's beat them both in terms of flavor, texture and overall quality. I didn't have much of a sweet tooth when I came in, but I did get a mocha mousse, chocolate covered little ball of heaven and it was delicious. They also have coconut macaroons (always gluten-free) and a couple other almond cookies. I wish they had some of the REAL Danishes (raspberry/almond bars, etc) in a gluten-free version, but maybe in due time they will perfect that too. I'm not sure what my friend even ordered because we both inhaled our treats in seconds, but she enjoyed it I know that. This is def my new favorite bakery in Solvang.
(4)Stefanie W.
I can't recommend any treats from this place cuz there is too many! Everytime we come here, we get almost $40 worth of stuff to go. AMAZING. Staff is also very great and quick to help and keep the line moving. All I can say. My thighs may have regrets, but my hearts does not. End of story.
(5)Casey R.
Everything we ordered was far too sweet. We had an apricot danish and a large cream puff. I know both are technically sweets but they took it to a new level. The service was also horrible. We had walked in at the same time as another couple and started browsing their case. The employee went to help them first and they said they weren't ready but the snooty teenager didn't want to help us even though we were ready. The other couple had to tell her to help us and that they were waiting for some others. I can get over bad service fairly easily if the product is good. However, it wasn't.
(2)Chrissy O.
I love Mortensen's. It is by far my favorite bakery in Solvang and one of the reasons I love vacationing there. The service is always friendly and prices are reasonable. The pastries are delicious. I love the pistachio bars. They are to die for. I am craving one right now!!!
(4)Michelle C.
Very pleased to find the baked marzipan pastries identified as gluten-free. For this visit, there were four options available, including almond horns. The marzipan was a little too sweet, but was still tasty. It was nice to be able to have a bakery treat on a visit to Solvang again.
(4)Nadia G.
My mom asked me to bring her home pastries from Solvang so I did. I sampled very little but she loved them. The woman who helped me put a box together for my mom gave me some great recommendations.
(4)Michelle R.
Its a nice place for a coffee break. It seems you need to know what you want within 30 seconds of walking in, or the ladies won't help you. We were still perusing the pastries, and the ladies behind the counter didn't help us until we pipped up "We'd like to order". Maybe these ladies are used to tourists, they figure they'll never see us again. Nice pastries, and coffee wasn't bad. But you have to be assertive or you won't get any service.
(3)Stacey H.
I tried the owl eye cookies here and believe me you can't just have one. I understand why these cookies are in such demand. Their danish however doesn't taste as amazing but I forgive them because the owl eye cookies were that good.
(4)Renee J.
I was looking to find the famous abelskivers and tried my luck at this little bakery. Unfortunately they didn't have any so instead I ordered the Apple Danish and it was DELISH. Super flaky with a sweet icing drizzled across the top with fresh apple compote and slivered almonds. Yum! It was a little pricy (around $3) but it is a small "mom and pop" shop that is focused on quality and the service is amazing! We were greeted warmly by one of the attendants behind the counter and we sat outside in a cozy patio with plenty of room and shade. Also, a really nice young man was in charge of coffee and drinks and also was willing to pick up after you had finished eating. Thank you Dakota for providing my family with water on such a hot day! If you are in Solvang and get the chance, stop by Mortensen's for a tasty treat and great service :)
(5)Misty D.
After walking around the town, my boyfriend and I stopped in here for a cool reprieve from the hot sun. Inside there is a long case of yummy looking pastries that will give you diabetes just looking at it...just kidding about the diabetes part. The ladies behind the counter were very helpful in explaining the different pastries. We had such a good danish - i can't remember the name but man, it was good. It was filled with apples, drizzled with frosting and sprinkled with almonds. They offered nice cold water to drink as well. We were lucky enough to find a table inside and enjoyed the cute ambiance of this bakery.
(4)Kristine D.
BAD service WHAT kind of establishment are you???? Guess it's better to not wait in line for the 15 minutes and disregard organization.
(1)Mel P.
I went to Mortensen's this weekend and it will be my last time. I have given them plenty of business over the years, at least once a year, but they are now WAY overpriced. I got a tin of cookies to take home and the one box was over $27.00. Their cookies are good but considering I used to pay $7.95 for that same box years ago it's starting to hit home how overpriced these cookies are. I've decided to start baking at home when I have a cookie craving. Solvang has lost it's appeal to me over the years. Many business are closing and the merchandise is overpriced and boring. Sorry Mortensen's it's been fun but you are now history. One more thing... The customer service is pretty bad. Like the other reviewer said when you walk in they ignore you, people cut in front of you to order. No organization when it comes to ordering.
(1)Kirkland B.
Gourmet Danish Pastries prepared with an eye for the art of it without losing any attention for the taste, Mortensen's Bakery is the best in Solvang. Make sure you get there before 10:00 am or you'll be left with a limited selection. These pastries are fantastic and they don't wait around long. Excellent, friendly service.
(5)Roxanne E.
The young man in the bakery was very friendly; sadly, I didn't get his name. The pistachio square with apricot is absolutely delicious. Also, the florentine was good. I will return to this bakery again on my next visit.
(4)Em K.
Yum! These are the best cheese danish ever! The service was awesome, the ladies behind the counter were smiling, helpful and talkative even though they had a group of tourists from a bus to serve as well as the rest of us waiting.Im not sure if they were Danish but they looked it. I would head here first if you are new to the bakeries around the Royal Copenhagen. Happy Customer.
(5)Joel G.
Solid baked goods. Grabbed a custard stripe or whatever it was called for breakfast back in LA. Tasty goodness.
(3)Stephen S.
For me, the best part of visiting Solvang was stopping at Mortensen's Danish Bakery for a cup of coffee and a pastry. They've got a nice selection of pastries, but not everything is available by the slice. For example, I wanted a piece of apple strudel, but they don't sell it by the slice, so I opted for a cream cheese danish instead. My girlfriend got the apple puff pastry. I thought the pastries were good but not as fresh-tasting as could be. The coffee was okay, but too weak for my taste.
(3)Kemi A.
Holy pastries! On our way home from Los Olivos, we made a pit stop in Solvang. Stopped here for some coffee, I ordered a pastry and I swear it was the sweetest best thing ever. It's like diabetes in a pastry! Yum!!
(4)Cate T.
I caught a glimpse of the name of this bakery when we were driving by it on the way to a truly boring breakfast. After the breakfast, we walked around and I decided we would need pastries to soak up wine from impending wine tastings and stopped in. I loved simply LOOKING at the pastries. Seeing the delicately baked whorls and swirls in the danishes, puffs of sugar-dusted confections and fruit-filled wonders. The smells were good, they were constantly changing out and replacing sold out trays of eats. While it took my mother only a moment to choose, it took me much longer until I settled on the raspberry cream cheese strip. I would just like to say that it was the best pastry I've had in years... or maybe ever. I should've just bought a dozen of them - especially since when I offered my mother a "bite" of it, she did that thing that mothers do. Scene: She takes the pastry, glances at me, pretends to start taking a normal bite and then suddenly unhinges her jaws and chomps off over half the pastry, leaving me quite appalled and forlorn. *sigh* Mothers... If I'm ever back in Solvang, I'm clearing out a whole tray of them, bringing them home, and having a party with friends. Favorite pastry, hands down. And maybe I'll buy one of those apple strudles, because those looked awesome, too.
(5)Anna B.
This was my first trip to Solvang and this place was recommended to me by a foodie and friend. When you walk in the place is clean and smells amazing! The people are friendly and welcoming. I thought the pastries were very good, but overpriced. I may return for the atmosphere, but will probably try other shops in the area first.

A pair of friends had to pick up a wine club order, so I tagged along on their adventure to Solvang. Their destination was the winery next to this place. After tasting some wines, I was a bit woozy. I'll fully admit it, I've got a ridiculously low tolerance; and an eight year old schoolgirl could probably out-drink me. My low tolerance coupled with an empty stomach made the wine cloud my brain all the easier. Once wine consumption and acquisition was completed, we came over here for food. As we were walking in, I noticed a child-written sign that said 'Buy a cupcake to help the orphanage.' What!? Cupcake proceeds helping orphanages!?!? I'm so in on that one. I approached the mob in front of the counter, and tried to find the end of a line. After some searching around, I was unable to find any sort of order to the chaos. So I called out to one of the girls on the other side of the counter. "Is there a line? Or do We just order?" She looked at me and smiled...."I can take care of you right now if your ready." I stepped up through the mob to my side of the counter and began to ask about the Orphan saving cupcakes. She pointed to a row and I immediately asked for one. Yes, I have saved orphans on this day, your welcome Orphans. Okay, now what do I want? Sitting atop the case, there was a display of cookies that looked delicious. I inquired, and she began to list prices and sizes...eventually stopping at 'bucket.' As they did look really, really good, "I'd like the bucket." Then, my ears perked up. From behind me I heard another customer say, 'I hear their cheese Danishes are really good.' "oooh...cheese Danish...that does sound good. Add one of those too." Then I actually looked in the counter for what I wanted. My eyes quickly set upon the first item in the counter. It was an éclair that was cut horizontally, and stuffed with whipped cream... "Ooooh....and definitely one of those!" I said hungrily. Girl helping me asked politely; 'Would you like anything else?' I averted my eyes from the rest of the pastry-filled counter in a desperate attempt to avoid further damage to my waistline. "No...that'll definitely do it. But thank you." She then bagged and boxed everything up for me, and walked over to the register. Totaled up at $28.39. I paid, and took my bag outside to grab a table. I also grabbed a tiny tiny plastic fork with which to eat my éclair with my friends as they ate their pastries. I did my best with the tiny tiny fork, but it was no match for the might of the éclair, and I ended up picking the thing up to eat it. Turns out there was raspberry inside the whipped cream layer of the éclair....it was downright magical. On a side note, you can ask for plates and actual cutlery to eat with. Had I known, I wouldn't have tried so hard with the tiny tiny plastic fork. I returned inside with my hands messy and sticky, a nice lady behind the counter explained to me they had no bathrooms, but then directed me to a sink in which to wash my hands. This place got cool points for that. I took my additional pastries and bucket of cookies home, and upon opening them, I quickly devoured them. (Over the next few days) This place is awesome. Their pastries are magical, and their people are wonderfully pleasant and very eager to serve. I'll most definitely be back again.
(5)Miya K.
Couldn't sit down for a cup of coffee due to a packed schedule with wine tasting in the area, but would have been nice. The building is cute and very easy to find. I'm not much of a pastry person, but got a blueberry danish and a pistachio square for breakfast the next day. Delish!

Why do people give this place 3-4 stars? They must be dumb n blind. This bakery only gets one star for its product looking tasty. Otherwise, this place needs a complete overhaul. Customer service was atrocious. Not even one of the young ladies/girls smiled nor said hello when i walked in, much less when greeted. Very cold shoulder from one of the staff. (I had to repeat a simple question three times to the helper, yet she still did not fully understand, then she copped an attitude) As i stood in what i assumed was the unofficial line from the front door, i waited patiently for two other customers ahead of me to be helped. Keep in mind, there were at least four employees behind the counter. After 5 mins, i noticed two of them chatting while the line grew longer and the crowd spread across the open space in front of pastry counter. No rhyme or reason to the order of who was next in line after awhile. People began to cut in front of others. No stantions setup, nor signs were posted, and the pastry windows were mostly blocked from view for customers literally stood directly in front. I left soon after two more customers cut in line, for none of the staff members acknowledged the situation, nor asked who was next in line! I expected much better Customer Service in a tourist town like Solvang that should regard it as Priority #1. Their business owner n manager need to get it together right quick or lose their biz right quick. Properly train the help, and create a better system. They also need tables n chairs inside, not only outside. Sadly, I may never return.

Stopped with 6 family members...was embarrassed how the staff treated them. Indifferent woman irritating said they have no bathrooms, go to the park. Pastries are just okay, but certainly not worth the price if the staff is so rude.

Not what it used to be. We visited the quaint town of Solvang the morning of Saturday, August 9, 2014. Of course we stopped in at Mortensen's Danish Bakery for cookies to bring back to our family and friends. The bakery section was relatively empty. We purchased various aluminum containers of cookies that were, to say the least, non-spectacular. I also found the apple strudel to be soggy and the filling similar to the syrup sweetened canned variety. Were helped by a chubby dark hair girl who was more interested in chatting with a coworker than helping us. Overall, we won't be coming here again. Fortunately for us, we stopped by Olsen's for their signature white "bucket" of cookies. We found the cookies as we had them back in the 1970s. They were crunchy, each one consistently formed, and perfectly sweetened. The pastry were all to our liking.

We planned our honeymoon to start in solvang before I got diagnosed with Celiac's. I had been so excited to try all the different pastries and Danishes.... Alas, there are no GF versions in the town. HOWEVER, mortensens did have a pretty amazing mocha/ almond gluten free square dessert that was delicious... We stopped by 4 times during the two days we were in solvang, and I wound up buying a few more to take with me on our way to our next stop on the honeymoon! Yum. Please start making gluten free Danishes!!!! I'm begging you!!!!!
(4)Joey G.
Delicious Danish pastries. The cookies were good too!

I was showing my boyfriend around Solvang - it was our last day in Santa Barbara. We needed coffee, so we stopped into Mortensen's. It was EMPTY (Monday late morning), so we decided to have a seat and have some treats as well. While the coffee was just average - the baked goods were outstanding and the service was super. He had the cheese danish and I had a florentine. I am so glad this not was my first florentine ever, because every other florentine in the entire world would be such a disappointment. They simply cannot compare to this confectionary magic. Someone came in while we sat and started to try to bargain with the woman about the treats and I really wanted to scream at her - THESE ARE DELICIOUS PERFECTIONS, STOP TRYING TO GET A FLIPPING DISCOUNT!
(4)Carla F.
Simply DELICIOOUS! I am sooo glad we made it a point to stop here on our road trip. This area is just the cutest! I am a sucker for sugar cookies. I had one in the display case and *cough* grabbed a to go bucket instantly like they were going out of style. I actually had them with vanilla ice cream, last night! Yum-Yum-YUM! Picked up a raspberry, custard and cream-cheese strudel. I think it the best I have had ever, really!! not too sweet just perfect and soooo fresh. The shop itself is very cute! Everyone was very nice and helpful and patient. At least with me because I could not make up my mind! Oh My! I walked out with a whole bunch of goodies like: Raspberry owl eyes are also very good. Can't say enough about them. Famous pistachio squares (Oh Lawd!!) Raspberry, Creme Cheese Pastries Again, I am soooo glad I was able to try this awesome bakery! I will be back!!
(5)Karin B.
We had an eclair. Whipping cream inside it was really good, but that's all! Danish pastry is really better than this. In addition the tables were really dirty, and the staff was unfriendly.
(3)Julie H.
This is a nice Danish bakery with several items to choose from....all looking very scrumptious. We opted for a cream cheese Danish, and a raspberry Danish. They were delicious! Very flaky and buttery. I didn't think any of the items were overpriced, for what you get, which is homemade pastries, made right on the premises. It's rather large inside, with plenty of tables and room to stretch out and enjoy your pastry and coffee or other beverage. With several bakeries (I think about 5 in all) in Solvang to choose from, I'm glad we stopped here. I was tempted to take a strudel or butter ring home, but I'm glad I didn't, because I probably would have eaten the entire thing!
(4)Kristen G.
This bakery is absolutely adorable! They have seating inside and a small retail space all bakery related. We showed early morning when everything was freshly pulled out of the oven and the cheese Danishes were still warm. Loved it!!!! We grabbed a few goodies to take home with us. The dough used for croissants has a cinnamon sugar flavor baked into them which makes this place a point to come back to.
(4)Eric C.
I hit this place every time I find myself in Solvang. Mortensens used to serve the best tasting coffee ever, and it is the reason why I would sit down inside to enjoy a pastry during every visit. During this visit, the coffee was good, but not as good as I remember it. I had a blueberry Danish, and it was most yummy! Everything in the display that I have ever tried is always a tasty experience. You really can't go wrong with anything you point your finger at. The service here... Has never been great. But Mortensens has a very inviting feel to it, and that is why I look beyond the meager service to indulge in the yumminess. Only three stars as a result, but I love this place, and it is a Solvang tradition for me and whoever visits with me.
(3)Morgan Murphy M.
AMAZING!!! This bakery is on my top 5 favorite places for sweets! Everything is so delicious. The marzipan pistachio bar is out of this world! Can not wait to come back!
(5)Thomas M.
My brother get's this thing he calls the Danish Torpedo. I think it's actually just raspberry Jam and whatever their heavenly cream sitch is, on a pastry. Doesn't matter, every time I say "I'm driving to Solvang" he says, 'get that Danish Torpedo" Downside is I'm pretty sure their coke is RC Cola.
(3)Lisa G.
We ordered a chocolate eclair and a napoleon. We are not very familiar with bakery items, but we felt a little rushed by the associates behind the counter, so we stuck with what was somewhat familiar. We also ordered and purchased a bottled water to go with our treats only to find out after we paid they were out of them :( the bakery items themselves were quite delicious and were presented well. The bakery is bright, airy, and appears very clean. I just wish we would have had received a bit more information on the choices available.
(3)Jaimie L.
This place doesn't particularly stand-out to me, especially in a town full of other Danish bakeries. The pastries looked good; I tried their Apricot Boat, however it was way too sweet. This bakery is bit old-fashioned...they can keep their traditional Danish pastry recipes, however for the other pastries/sweets, I think it can use some modernization.
(3)Karen K.
Went for my birthday on 2/18/15 for a girlfriend's getaway. Wandered into this bakery and it was late afternoon. I think her name was Stephanie, she was one of the owners. She was so awesome, friendly and generous. We picked out a few delicious morsels and she threw in a couple danish for my birthday. The best ever.
(5)Michael S.
Our Danishes were good (custard, cream cheese, blueberry and raspberry I think respectively for our table of 4). We found it odd though that Mortensens didn't have orange juice. Why don't they have orange juice? There were people there enjoying a coffee with their breakfast, but orange juice is not available. The lady who helped us suggested we could go to the restaurant next door and bring the orange juice back. Odd for a breakfast place.
(3)Jason V.
Great bakery to stop after lunch before heading back to the PCH for your drive. The clam cookies and pistachio squares were good, but the best thing I liked was the pizzelles cookies!!!!
(4)Molly R.
This rates one star for poor customer relations. Being visitors and needing urgently a restroom for my elderly brother, we stopped to buy some coffee and pastries here and use the restroom. But before ordering, we asked for directions to the restroom but we were turned away. We were told there aren't restrooms on the premises and told to go outside down the street to the public one. Really?!! Whoever was working at the bakery today Mar 2, 2015, please get some customer service training.
(1)Tom C.
Definitely a good Danish place if you are looking for one, crisp and light. My wife got the chocolate eclair and was a little disappointed to find a raspberry filling. Coffee was mild and well-balanced.
(4)Marissa B.
I got a raspberry cream cheese pastry because it was highly recommended then a pistachio square and a chocolate cupcake in pushpop form and it was less than $10. It is sooooooo delicious!!! I have got to come back for more goodies!!!
(5)Joe E.
I got a bear claw. Cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on top. Crispy pastry that was buttery and delicious. She got the raspberry strudel with cream cheese. Each bite had the tang from the fruit but the decadent richness of the cream cheese. The pastry was soft so the whole thing just melted in your mouth causing your taste buds to go into a frenzy. Every nibble she gave me was amazing. It doesn't happen often, but she out ordered me on this one. The strudel is ridiculous.
(4)Diana H.
Unfortunately, I thought overall the apple danishes that we got were too sweet - but had a great flaky pastry. We also ordered some rasberry cookies but ended up throwing them out because I didn't like the flavor of the cookie itself. Super cute place - but it did not satisfy this sweet tooth. I would try the other bakeries around the area.
(3)Char L.
The ladies behind the counter were not very friendly. When we walked in, they did not greet us and instead sorta just sat there staring at us until we were ready to order. I got the cinnamon roll - it was flaky and extremely sweet. Actually, everything that we ordered was extremely, extremely sweet.
(2)John C.
Gluten free people this is the place to go to get your Danish pastry fix. You cannot get all their products GF, but I was surprised how much they had that was.
(5)Bonnie D.
I was at Mortensen's Danish Bakery this morning and I had a wonderful experience. I was greeted quickly and the staff member that helped me is the granddaughter of the bakery founder. She was a lovely young lady who was friendly and helpful. I purchased several items and we've eaten half of them and loved them all. All in all we had a great experience and next time I'm in Solvang I'll be back!
(5)Reyleen S.
I had never been here before but I am definitely going to go back! Their raspberry danish and their pistachio bar were delicious! I bought a tin of butter cookies for my co-workers and we all loved them.
(5)Sergio M.
Yummy Cheese Danish but you will pay for it on the thighs and the wallet but worth every penny!
(4)Mary L.
I'm gluten free, and they sadly didn't have anything for me, but I got my mom a cherry boat she said was great, and the girl who helped me was extremely kind.
(3)Jo Y.
There was a power outage at some of the restaurants so we stopped into this bakery. I ordered the apple strip & a cup of coffee. The pastry was delicious & I was surprised the coffee was as well. Despite being overwhelmingly busy, the staff were very friendly. We stopped by again before we left Solvang & picked up cookies & a cup of coffee. Of course both were wonderful.
(5)Yi-Lin K.
Name one thing that's truly Danish. You'll probably think of Hans Christian Anderson and also, pastries! This was the first bakery we came to in Solvang. With it's adorable pink walls and cosy tea house feel, you have the sense of being teleported to somewhere in Alice in Wonderland. We tried the Kringle, the cream cheese pastry, apple slice and the raspberry pastry. They were a little on the sweet side but they are a rare find in California. I wasn't blown away and I might try another bakery if I ever come back to Solvang but hey, I wasn't disappointed! I'll give this 3 stars.
(3)Steve A.
In our taste off of four different Solvang bakeries, I found that Mortensens has the butteriest tasting cookies. I particularly liked the plain round ones with the curved tops. They have a long, buttery finish that is slightly salty and not as sweet as some.
(4)Karisa D.
***3 1/2 Stars**** Mortensens is a cute bakery in the Solvang neighborhood. It's one of the bigger bakeries (and probably one of the more visited bakeries in Solvang). Service is good; the staff moves people through the lines quickly. I liked the pistachio cup, which is one of their best sellers. Overall not a bad bakery.
(3)Edwin N.
The main reason we came to Solvang was to buy baked goodies and bring them back home. We brought home so many pastries and breads I can't even name them all. We loved all of it and we will be back!!!
(5)Georgie M.
Oh, what a nice little place to grab some delicious goodies! After having breakfast next door at The Greenhouse Cafe, we stopped here for snacks for our trip back to LA. As you would expect from a Danish Bakery, the treats are excellent. We loved their bear claws and almond butter cookies. And, we were lucky since it was late morning and the bakery and village was mostly empty. Prepare to enjoy some sinful delights!
(4)Kylie L.
eating their danish cookies right now! so buttery, don't think i have a favorite. they're all good!
(4)Abby S.
Call me a pastry snob, but I wasn't too excited about the offerings at Mortensen's. After peeking into a few of the bakeries in Solvang, it seems like their baking techniques are all the same. It's likely a Danish thing. We picked up two danishes to-go on the way out of town, one cheese and one cherry. The filling was A-OK, but it was the pastry itself that I didn't like. It's very dry and bland. There's a Danish bakery near my house in Burlingame, Coppenhagen copenhagenbakery.com and I would much prefer to eat what they bake. They tend to do the traditional "stuff", along with cakes and the most amazing cinnamon rolls. Perhaps they have me spoiled? Save your time and calories and go to Paula's for some pancakes instead! yelp.com/biz/paulas-panc…
(3)Courtney J.
I bought the $25 of the assorted cookies package. I think this is the best deal to try all the cookies.... so expensive... but very tasty. There is even a sitting area to enjoy your cookie and pastries with a cup of coffee or drink. Don't rush, enjoy your cookie under the roof....
(3)Amanda S.
Oh, sweet marzipan pastries. So freaking delicious. I went it expecting to get a couple things and walked out with a giant box of pastries for myself. I have no idea what most of the names of the items were (except the marzipan Napoleon hats, which were my favorite), but everything was incredible.
(5)Walter T.
Good variety, and friendly staff.
(3)Brian S.
My aunt & uncle first stumbled upon this gem of a bakery when they got into town the day before us. Oh man, flaky, buttery, heaven. It is a very quaint place with friendly service & a wonderful selection of pastries. The apple strip is flaky & buttery with real apple filling & just the right amount of icing on top. The apricot danish is also flaky & buttery with real apricot filling; my mother & aunt love how they have gluten free pastries, the crancacagges being my mother's favorite. Sure, they will not be the cheapest, but not the most expensive, but the best. So, for excellent Danish delights for a little more than what you would pay elsewhere, Mortinson's cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.
(5)Berna T.
Solvang is such a cute area. Why not stop by one of the many, many bakeries that they have to offer. It literally smells like sugar everywhere. Mortensens was the bakery my friends and I decided to try. It was also on of the only bakeries that was still open when we arrived in Solvang (we came a little bit before 6pm). When we walked in, they were already cleaning up all of the tables and floors. Everyone was set to lock up and we made it just on time. Yay. I ended up getting the cream cheese and apple pastry. The pastry itself was flaky and delicious with a small crunch. The fillings were overly sweet - it was a sugar explosion! Once I bit into the filling part, the sugar overpowered the tastes of everything else. What happened to the cream cheese?! What happened to the apple?! I have a huge sweet tooth and it still did not meet my expectations. I hope my next visit will be better!
(3)Jen C.
Their service isn't consistent. I came here with friends this time and wanted them to try their cookies however, they said that they don't give cookies to try but we could buy their tin box to try and if we like it, we can buy a bucket. I decided to get their cookies anyway since I still believe that this place has the best buttered cookies. So I got 3 buckets. On their wall, it says that it's $46.50 for 3 buckets. The person helping charged us their deal for 2 buckets plus one bucket. I guess she did this so many times that she didn't realize that she was over charging me. It ended up being $48.50. So I pointed it out to her that on the wall it says $46.50 and she proceeded to redo the purchase. So make sure you check the prices before you pay. After getting the cookies, my friends and I decided to sit outside since we walked all day and wanted to rest. The worker here is really nice and friendly. He came by often and refilled our drinks or if we needed anything else. He seemed to enjoy working here so I hope they don't let him go. Overall, I don't mind coming here to sit and have a cup of coffee but beware of over charges on your cookies.
(3)Joleen Q.
I remember the location being great and the danishes being super sweet and flaky. Sugar rush with the coffee. Great service and great price!
(3)Marlene S.
I came to Solvang for Danishes. But this is the first time coming to this bakery. The Apple Danish I had wasn't very good. It was actually a little too sweet and hard for my liking. And the women at the front of the counter barely even looked at me when I ordered and weren't very helpful at all. Will not be coming back here again.
(2)Lisa M.
Passing through Solvang? You MUST pick up some danish. You can never go wrong with the raspberry danish, but stay away from the bear claws- there wasn't enough paste inside to balance out all the pastry. The danish add up quickly too, so don't buy too many like I did, hah!! Service is super friendly and helpful, and their display case is always full of freshly baked goodies.
(4)Kevin L.
I'm a sucker for sweets, especially pastries, and although dinner was just around the corner, we headed into Mortesens to have some afternoon tea and Danish treats. The selection is huge and there is a lot to choose from, but for us, we ended up selecting a few cookies and a Danish with hot chocolate and coffee, both served in individual teapots, instead of in cups. The pastries were delicious, although not the best or most memorable, and honestly, it was kind of average. The decor is really nice and the service was quick and efficient. I'll probably try another bakery next time - I'm sure there are better ones in Solvang!
(3)Tej S.
I was in Solvang because my cousins were visiting from outside of the country and we decided to show them the Danish town. For one, this place is very expensive, but again it's not about how much you eat here, but how much you enjoy each piece. I bought a raspberry cream cheese pastry because I asked the girl at the front what she enjoyed there. This was probably the most expensive dessert I have ever bought outside of a restaurant, but It was worth it. It was too much for me to eat by myself so I shared it with a couple of cousins. I might be back next time, but I need to break the bank to buy one pastry here lol. Thank you Mortensens Danish Bakery! -Tej
(4)Marthie D.
For about $11 I was able to get an assortment of Danish cookies. My favorite were the coconut ones. But over all, their cookies are buttery and seriously MELT IN YOUR MOUTH good! I was also able to get a raspberry danish for about $4. Delicious. Crispy. Sweet. Yummy. BUT as I was walking around Solvang I noticed that a raspberry danish was a dollar less at Danish Mill Bakery. I would have stomached another one there but I was already satisfied with my Aebleskivers from the Red Viking!
(4)Cindy W.
I would have given this place 5 stars if they had a constructive way of lining people up and getting people to order in order and not have it be so chaotic and crazy. We had to fight with other people to get the woman's attention behind the counter to even order. There's people looking at the menu, standing in front of the other desserts and no one can see anything or decide on anything. Not to mention, order your coffee or hot chocolate to go because if you don't, you'll be waiting at your table for quite some time to get a pot of hot chocolate. Yes, a pot, not one individual cup, so make sure you know that when you order. We ended up getting 2 pots of hot chocolate, which was more than enough for us. We had to try the danish since we're in Danish land so why not? I had the raspberry danish and hubby had the cream danish. We also ordered owl's eyes and florentines to enjoy with our hot chocolate. Great dessert and a nice ending to our day.
(4)Sophia G.
I was only in Solvang for a couple hours and had to stop here to stock up on some danish pastries! This was my first time at this shop and their pastry display had me wanting everything! I got a raspberry pastry, a napoleon, and an apple turnover to go. My favorite was the napoleon! O-M-G! That pastry was SO good; it had me licking all the crumbs off my plate! It wasn't overly sweet. The creamy/flaky texture was just right - like how a napoleon should be and more! I didn't get to try other bakeries in Solvang, so I don't know how this place compares to the other ones. The service was friendly! The place was clean, roomy, and tastefully decorated. I think I found my go-to bakery in Solvang!
(4)Abraham T.
The wife and I tried a Blueberry and Cherry Fruit Filled Boat. It was delicious. They have a good selection of pastries and even offer to prep pastries right off the oven if available. After selecting your pastry and beverage you can sit indoors or on the patio area. It's difficult not to sit there and admire the place.
(4)Kate T.
Had the raspberry cream cheese strip and it was amazing. Good coffee. Good customer service!
(5)Tina A.
The bakery has a lot of Danish treats that will satisfy the sweet tooth. We loved the Raspberry Coconut Macaroon Squares with some regular coffee. There was good demand for Owl Eye Cookies and Bear Claws and Almond Butter Cookies. Everything looks yummy. Nice little coffee shop that is inviting and customer friendly. Stop by and enjoy a good treat.
(4)Sandra D.
Yummy raspberry Danish and Danish waffle were the best... Tried creme puff, and almond claw, not to great, and so bad
(4)VengeanceGod S.
Absolutely tasteless
(2)Christina S.
Coffee and a danish is a must every time we visit Solvang.
(4)Brittany G.
-Boyfriend got an apple turnover that was hard and tasteless. -I mistakenly purchased a SINGLE cookie for $2.95. -Stare-downs from the two tween employees Even Albertsons has better pastries ya'll, don't even bother
(1)Aki K.
I think this is one of the best of many bakeries in Solvang (and I've tried almost all of them, actually!) They do the Danish pastry classics very well, but their best just might be the pistachio bars (taste like marzipan) or the owl eyes (sugar cookie, raspberry jam, and marzipan). Whatever you like, you will find it here. It's a must visit spot when in town.
(4)Carl J.
The raspberry macaroon and the raspberry danish we ordered were both WAY TOO sweet. My wife wasn't even able to finish her macaroon and commented that the raspberry jam tasted like it came straight out of a store-bought jar. Very disappointed: European bakeries do not serve items that sweet. This bakery has an excellent position and large spaces but, in our opinion, they should revise their recipes. They should also bring in an espresso coffee machine (when we asked for an espresso we were directed to the cafe' next door).
(2)Brittania D.
Yummy! We hit Mortensens for some traditional Danish treats while in Solvang this weekend and we were not disappointed. The Napoleon Hats, Owl Eye (fruit and marzipan filled) Cookies, Pistachio Bars, and the Two Cookie (butter cookies filled with buttercream and dipped in chocolate) were amazing!
(3)Kareena R.
The pastries are "ok" but they don't taste fresh and they're pretty expensive... However the service was better here than Olsen's... But the pastries are wayyyyyy better at Olsen's...
(3)Jessica C.
First time, great cookies. Second visit, they allowed me to try the butter cookies for free and i bought it cuz its good. Third visit i wanted my friends to try butter cookies, they denied. They needa be consistant with thier service. Didnt buy cookies
(3)James T.
Great service and baked goods! My Wife and I went here for a snack and ended up getting a Danish waffle and hot chocolate. The pastry was flaky and delicious! We ate in the cafe, so we could relax and enjoy the experience. The hot chocolate was just instant, but sometimes that's good too, and this was one of those times. Still, we probably wouldn't have ordered it if we had known it was just going to be powdered. We drank complimentary water as well before heading back out into the hot day. The service was great! The girls have excellent suggestions to help decide what would be the best choice. Bottom Line: We would definitely suggest this place to anyone in the area! The service rocks and the pastries are perfect. The only thing holding them back was the hot chocolate.
(4)Vicky H.
Pastries look nice but are too sweet. Also over-priced for what they are. We got three pistachio balls, which turned out to be 70% cream and not a sad pistachio nut in sight. Should be called pistachio-flavored cream balls. We also tried the apple strip, which was passable.
(2)Michelle M.
How can you NOT go in a Danish Bakery when you're in Solvang?!?! It's seriously, like, a requirement! All I can say about my purchase is: Yummmmmmm-ooooo. Best Cherry Danish I've EVER had!!! Drool. It was seriously the bomb. Tasty. Drool fest central. Huge. Fresh. Yummy. Amazing. Wonderful. I could keep going, but I think you get the point!! I will warn you -- this bakery is pricey. One danish is about $3.60 (with tax). You may be "sticker shocked" for what you get because I know I was. But, honestly, it's totally worth it when you take your first bite!! You won't regret it at all! All in all, come in to Mortensens Danish Bakery to get your sweet tooth on. Cheers!
(4)Jim W.
I believe all I need in life is a napoleon and an eclair from Mortensen's.
(5)Teresa V.
This is a nice little bakery with indoor and patio dining. The pastries are really good with great service to match. This was my first visit to Solvang. I will return to this bakery when I'm back in town.
(5)Tkpasq P.
I've tried all the butter cookies in Solvang and I like Mortensen's the best. They have the right amount of butter and it just sings in my mouth every time I take a bite. Whenever I'm driving down south, I have to make a pit stop here and buy tubs of cookies for my family and friends as well YUM!
(5)Tawny A.
Setting: normal coffee shops sounds such as clanking of ceramic mugs, mild chatter in background, cash register drawer sliding open and shut. All of a sudden, "YES YES YES, OOOOHHHH YES YES!!" I say, doing my best hair tossing from When Harry Met Sally. I just ate a Sarah Bernhardt.
