I was recommended this place while I was in Capitola so I decided to give it a try. It's a very small shop so it might be a little hard to spot. There wasn't very many seating so don't be surprised if a stranger asks if they can eat at your table too. I didn't mind. I ordered the Quesadilla with the Carne Asada and it was so good! The Monterey cheese and the tortilla tasted better than most Mexican restaurant. I'm really curious if those were made in house. The beef was cooked perfectly. It was tender and juicy and just mixed with the Quesadilla so well. Throw some of their homemade salsa and BAM! You have yourself a feast! I was told to get a burrito but I'm not too big a fan but next time I'm in the area I'll definitely try the Al Pastor because it looked and smelled so good!

My favorite spot for the best burrito near The Bay. I can't get enough, it's always worth the price they charge and you can't have anything in this place without the signature salsa. The only thing I find difficult about this place is when they close during the holidays. Thankfully since they opened there Capitola location it's only closed for a couple weeks. It's places like these that make me miss CA everyday.

Salsa and hot chips are homemade goodness - fresh and delicious. I ordered 1 carne and 1 veggie taco and they were both equally far out for this little hole in the wall. Lots of locals moving through the place and several people are on a first name basis with the crew. What I really appreciated about the place is the owners daughter is a 3 time world champion boxer and I heard she sometimes comes in and helps out. Super cool!!!

Oh my what a great find this was. Found them on yelp while staying in the Santa Cruz area. Small eating area, but we were able to get a table after a short while. You order at the front counter and they bring your food out to you. I ordered 2 chicken tacos and a chicken burrito for my husband and I. The food was BIG and excellent tasting. I have been coming here for years and I have really enjoyed there food. I've tried a lot of taquerias all over Monterey and Santa Cruz counties and this place has been pretty decent. Today I went in, haven't tried my burro yet but I had to comment on the sour faced girl that works the front counter. Has she even heard of customer service our even being friendly. They are running a business after all. Not one smile at any customers the whole time I was there.

Best Carnitas and Al Pastor! Their salsa is amazing, the squirt bottle left on each table is a nice touch to assure you never run out. Line is normally pretty long at lunch time but it moves quickly and the food is worth the short wait. Try the corn quesadilla with al pastor.

I have been eating here since 1985 the BBQ pork burrito's and bean and cheese quesadilla's are my favorite there is nothing else like them any where that I have found and the best hot sauce ever! I am sad I now live in southern oregon and I have been chasing Moreno's since no one comes close my only fix is when I visit my old home town Santa Cruz , it's my first stop even before seeing my family and friends! my very favorite Mexican food place ever!!!

I visited Tacos Moreno, the one on Water Street, often in the 90s and into the 2000s. My recent trips have been disappointing. The meat portions have been reduced. I recently ordered a single carne asade taco, just to tide me over for a few hours, and I was shocked at how little meat was in the taco. For nearly $3, I expect more than a few shreds of beef. I've seen this at a couple of other taco places in Santa Cruz. Inflation is a bitch, but I'll be darned if I'll pay $3 for a taco that has maybe two tablespoons of beef in it. I don't understand how they got such great reviews. $3.20 for a taco is pretty up there for a taco. For that price it should have avocado at least maybe even sour cream. I ordered 2 tacos, 1 pastor, 1 carnitas In Both tacos the meat was over cooked and chewy. The pastor was not very flavorful, very over cooked almost dry, and the tortillas weren't cooked well so the meat made them fall apart. There are places way better than this, and less expensive. La Hacienda on Washington has always been one of my favs. 2 stars because of over cooked and price.

Heard good things, but the place was bad. Service sucked, had the feeling they wanted to close so I asked someone sitting there (friend of the staff) and was told they were open another hour! I was there at 7pm. Open sign was turned off (they turned it on while I was there - they hadn't realized) No salsa except in a tube on the table, and the supreme burrito I ordered was just a regular (not worth saying anything by the time I realized, but not worth what I paid). With all the choices in this town - best go elsewhere. Oh, and they only take cash. I saw a few other people come in while I was eating and they all got caught out on this too, and got the same few words from the guy taking the order. Just seemed they had no interest in having customers.

There are so many Mexican restaurants in Santa Cruz that I'm happy to skip this one after dealing with rude service. I was the only one in there and I ordered two tacos and sat.. .and sat... and sat and sat. Finally an older man came out to the counter and noticed me sitting there in the restaurant (still the only person in there) and asked who I assumed was his son (?) about my order and only then did they get off their asses and make my order. Again, there are too many GOOD Mexican taquerias in Santa Cruz to put up with this especially since my taco (and I did go back later for a burrito and the service was better but still very indifferent) was just okay. We went today on Valentines and i agree with the bad reviews. i asked the counter girl what was good and she did not want to help me at all so i ordered 2 tacos and a side of beans and my boyfriend got a burrito and a taco. The food was so bland and hardly had any meat in it. The beans were boiled pinto beans with no flavor. We ate a few bites and left. The staff seemed full of themselves. Not a good place. To many good options with good service and food. Spend your hard earned money else where. Where they will appreciate you.

My chile verde with beef taco was as good as a taco can get, but hubby's carne asada burrito was just so-so. I think his taste buds are biased towards Chipotle's steak burritos, so nothing was really wrong or bad at Tacos Moreno. It was obvious that the food is made fresh with quality ingredients. I also noticed the food prep area was kept spotless and clean. We've been meaning to try one of the Moreno locations after being introduced to one of the family members who own the restaurants earlier this year. We'll be back to try more of the menu and gladly support this local, family-run business.

I had two tacos, a carne asada and Al pastor. I was hoping I could find a decent taqueria in Santa Cruz, not here or anywhere... just rubbery meat that was sort of luke warm with flavorless pintos and cabbage on a taco? bad quality meat just doesn't fly with me, for two tacos and a coke it was $10 and for that price yikes. I didn't finish them and regretted going there, just not good quality food or preparation. I imagine the lukewarm meat came from a tall overcooked pile sitting for hours turning into rubber, I don't understand why people eat at these taquerias in SC because they aren't even cheap and the quality is bottom of the barrel Cisco food

As a vegetarian, I only get two things here: vegetarian burrito or 2 corn quesadillas. But they're the best in town, cheap and quick, and I've been getting them for 30 years. That's probably 1000 times, haha! The kids come back from their new towns and have to go to TM right away. Why? They have cabbage, not lettuce. Beans, not refried beans. Cilantro. No rice filler. Great salsa (which we've been trying to duplicate for years). They've got the basics down. Other locations aren't quite as good.

This review is for the one on Capitola Rd and 41st. I've never had the tacos so I cant comment on them but their burritos are THE WORST, everything is wet and saucy and I mean everything, they don't put rice in their burritos so all the soupy meat, guac, sour cream, salsa has nothing to hold on to and then, they lightly steam a flour tortilla so when you do finally eat it, it's one big pile of wet goo!! For the price I expected a lot more........hence why I don't normally eat here! For sure they need to re-think their burritos but then again, it's called TACOS Moreno and not burrittos Moreno. You decide but for me, it's a no-go for sure!

A great burrito is like a perfectly rolled blunt or a great martini - I'm not sure how to describe what makes it such a success, but I sure know it when I experience it. This place serves hands down the best burrito in Santa Cruz. and trust me, I tried just about every burrito joint in town when I was out there. The meat has great texture and flavor, the salsa is phenomenal, and the whole thing is wrapped exquisitely. Asada, carnitas, veggie - you can't go wrong. They've got a winning formula, and they stick to it. Thumbs way up! I definitely give this my 21 thumb salute.

I read some reviews before coming here and it sounded Ike the Carnitas Burrito was the bite to try. I typically don't care for pork burritos but ordered one anyways. It was fresh and full of flavor and I would get another! Chips and salsa were also good but nothing redonkulous. Great place to grab a burrito togo.

Why are they so rude On Purpose?!! It's like they really don't want to sell me burritos. I tip, I'm polite, patient. I keep coming back because the salsa is to die for. It's literally been years they've been hostile. Only ever had the burritos here; never had a bad one. I seriously dream about the al pastor, though. Can be a gut bomb (if you eat the whole thing), but so good. Get at least two extra cups of salsa. Well worth it.

This place is one of those hole in the wall gems, unassuming but the food packs a huge flavor punch! Not to mention that you can be served by a woman who knows how to throw a punch, four time world champion boxer, Moreno! The place is small so it can be challenging to find a seat but the service is fast and efficient so people cycle through quickly. I always get the quesadilla, my favorite has been the chicken with beans. It is definitely a messy plate of food (always have napkins on hand) but it is so worth it. The quesadilla is crisp and I think buttered, filled with meat cheese and beans that are packed with flavor. Any of the quesadillas are an excellent choice here, and combined with their home made salsa is a home run in my book. Do not miss out on their salsa it has a unique roasted spiciness to it that adds a great dimension to any of the food here.

This place is perfect! It is the best taco joint I have ever gone too. The service is very fast. You get 15 tacos in like three minutes! Besides the service, you get tasty tacos too. I suggest to order two or three beef tacos with beans and cheese.

Simply the best Mexican food. I have been going to Tacos Moreno's since 1996, their quality of food and service has not changed. I am a vegetarian and their veggie Tacos and burritos are superb, you have to experience Taco's Moreno's, its worth the drive to Santa Cruz. Came here to try out their Chavela since it's not a regular beer drink option outside of Watsonville for some reason. It was okay, but it came in a plastic mug and it didn't have any shrimp. If it's the only option for Santa Cruz I guess I'll have to deal. FYI Cost Plus downtown sells the glass mugs for cheap. I guess overall their food is just okay. A menu with some more traditional plates would be nice. The Mexican food in SC is lacking in that department. Also, what's up with not getting chips and salsa? I saw some people with them, but I'm assuming they had to pay for them. My order was almost twenty bucks, some chips would've been nice. House made hot sauce is really good as well as the tortillas they use.

This is mexican food that won't make you sick and bloated feeling. It is still cheese and beans and whatever, but they are not the lardy sour creamy kind of mexican food. Their tacos are big and delicious with whole pinto beans and the cheese is melted. Two is enough to make you feel pleasantly 2-months pregnant with a glow to match. The quesedilla is grilled and somehow not soggy. I love Tacos Moreno and it's easy to know why they get lines out the door during peak times. A real Santa Cruz favorite and you'll see nary a valley in this joint.

Great little restaurant. I grew up in a Mexican town, so Mexican food runs in my veins. The tacos are not the most authentic, but excellent in their own way. HUGE tacos, probably the largest I've had, and the tortilla chips are VERY tasty! If you're hungry and near this place, I highly suggest you stop in.

I came here because a friend speaks so highly of their burritos, and because they usually win the Good Times - best taqueria of santa cruz award. The menu is very sparse, mainly just burritos/tacos and quesadillas. I have to be up front and say i am a vegan, and this is one reason why my rating is so low. There really isn't many options for a vegetarian and or vegan. The service was fine. The guy at the counter was who i assume others have mentioned in their reviews as "rude" . I can't say he was the happiest nicest person i've ever bought food from. but he took my order and gave me change promptly. I bought a vegetarian burrito with added guacamole and a soda. I was surprised that with my bill being more than $7 that there was no complementary chips and salsa. The burrito was a meh...really nothing to write home about. The burritos have no rice in them, so i was eating a tortilla with beans, cabbage, salsa? and a little guacamole. There was supposedly onions and cilantro ? Since i paid extra for the guacamole i was expecting to not have a few bites of it half way through eating. the salsa- was spicy but very thin and bland... there is only one kind of salsa here.- no salsa bar ?! not the best taqueria in Santa Cruz

As I said before: it takes some experimenting to get this place right. Stray from the "usual" carne asada and pollo asado, and go for the al pastor. Had a couple al pastor quesadillas today. The quality of the burritos has dropped big time. It used to be a great local plkace. Years ago I worked near this place. The BBQ Pork burritos were thick and heavy, I went there twice in the past two weeks, the burrito hardly had any beef, and was loaded with lettuce, and refried beans. I went back and told them this. I gave the place another chance, and the burrito was limp, unfolded when I ate it, and again hardly had any pork in it. They were charging $1.50 for a bottle of water they probably get by the mega case from Costco. I also have to agree on the rudeness. Ther person making the food scowls and looks angry at you. Pardon me for dropping a ridiculous $7 on a burrito. I'm not going back. They lost a 20-year customer. Taco Moreno es muerto.

Just good and simple Nor Cal Mexican. I had the Carnitas Burrito and a beer (perfect after a day of hiking). The burrito had a good balance of meat and beans. The addition of the on-table hot sauce was excellent. My wife ordered the tacos and a quesadilla. The tacos were not so good. The addition of beans made them a bit much. The quesadilla was really good. Not a lot of tables, but the turnover seemed pretty quick.

Best al pastor (savory bbq pork) burrito I have ever had. Ever. Best taqueria salsa I have ever had. Period. Best quesadilla I have ever had. Apart from those highlights, almost everything there is good, and pretty unique as far as Taqueria's go. The menu is limited (choice of a Taco, Burrito, Quesadilla, or Chips) and they don't have any rice so don't ask. Tacos Moreno is cash only so keep that in mind if your planning to try it, i believe they have an ATM in the restaurant, and their prices are fairly reasonable. The only MINOR complaint I have is that chips are not complimentary as they are at most taquerias. Also they will never include enough salsa with to go orders so make sure to ask for extra. All in all a great place, great food, locally owned, and very quick service!

Well done Tacos Moreno! I came here to seek out the best burrito Santa Cruz has to offer and you didn't let me down! Supreme burrito with carnitas definitely ranks a strong 5 stars. Supreme burrito with al pastor brings my review down to four stars. I felt the burrito was a little skimpy on the meat and it was a tad dry as well. Bottom line at this place, don't cheat yourself - go for the carnitas! It's pure tasty pork bliss wrapped in a tortilla.

Did I try the same place as these other people? I got the Al-Pastor buritto, and found my burrrito to be subpar...and in general I think its sorta hard to mess up a buritto. My biggest complaint was the meat, it was incredibly dry and hard to chew and salty. (Think pork jerky). Maybe I should've tried the carnitas here, but the rest of the burrito was equally unimpressive...bland beans and gauc. The only good thing about my meal was the chips and the flavorful salsa, as well as the sauce at the table for the burrito.

Can someone tell the ungrateful individual at the counter with the fancy designer hat pulled down over his eyes, that when you take orders at a restaurant, that it's a good idea to greet people, say hello, say thank you, smile, pretend like you want them to come back, or be even vaguely friendly. And you can mostly blame the younger guy in the front that often works the register. Well that's how Moreno is - not that good, over-rated and the beyond-rude guy at the counter just adds insult to injury. Oh you saw the 2 stars instead of 1 did you? Here's why: (Besides the fact that I'm a nice guy, unlike some people, namely... well you know, that guy at the counter). - The owner, who I believe is the rude guy's dad, is actually nice and fairly friendly. Consider yourself lucky if you get him. - I like the salsa for the burritos - different than the other places in town. - Their quesadillas are really good in the sense that they are made with fried corn tortillas - the only place in town that does that. - The ingredients are fresh, since they are so busy. - They stand out in Santa Cruz because they actually offer different style taqueria food than most of the others (almost all of the taquerias in Santa Cruz have Taqueria Vallarta-style burritos, etc) Here are the bads: - That guy at the counter - he needs to get gone. - THEY ARE CASH ONLY. They make you go into the donut shop next door to use the ATM. Lame. - The salsa is not good in a chips and salsa kind of way, too thin and runny. - Their chips aren't too great. - Their beans are down right bland - especially when you get a vegetarian burrito. - The al pastor, what they are most famous for, is super over cooked, chewy, crispy and greasy. If you ate the red grease-soaked end of the burrito when you get down to that point, you'd probably add about 1000 extra calories. I also had a big chunk of bone in my last one. - It is awkward waiting for your food in there, you don't know where to stand. - You rarely see Mexicans eating there. They are all white. Guy at the counter: I saw your tip jar (What a joke!) - I stiffed you on the 14 cents of change you had divvied up before I even gave you my money. I am really tired of establishments in Santa Cruz that take their success for granted, and I cannot consciously support this place - even if it's just a spin once in a while to reaffirm what all the fuss is about.

I was working across the street and was really really hungry and this taco place was the first thing i've seen. I took a chance and ordered a supreme burrito that was under 6 bucks. I did notice that they had mostly beef as mostly the choice of meet so if your looking for seafood, this place is not for you. The tacos were 3 bucks and looked like the size of small burritos. The burrito was great, i'm not sure what they did to make it taste goof but it was tasteful. They also have some homemade salsa that wasn't too spicy at all. Just to make sure that it wasn't my hunger that day that made the food taste good. I went another day when i wasn't too hungry. I got there one of the days at about 1:30pm...man..the was a long line that went out the door. It wasn't my hunger that made my food better, this place is legit great cheap food.

I grew up down the street so I've been eating here for years, and can safely say that Tacos Moreno is one of the best casual mexican food places in all of Santa Cruz! Absolutely love the burritos! Usually get vegetarian, but the pollo is amazing as well! Always the moistest chicken and the cabbage holds up way better than shredded lettuce adding a satisfying crunchy texture contrast. What's also amazing is that the burritos aren't stuffed with rice, like many other places use as a cheap filler. Leaves you feeling much better all day too! Also love the quesadillas! they are pretty greasy, but it is so worth it! The flour tortillas just taste so amazing! Overall this place is amazing!!!!!!! oh and very well priced!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My boyfriend introduced me to this place early last year. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't loved it as much as he does, we wouldn't still be together. All I can say is: Best. Al. Pastor. Burrito. Ever. ...EVER!!! No really. The BEST!!! And the salsa...ohhhh, the salsa. If I could live on Tacos Moreno al pastor burritos, salsa, and Mexican cokes alone, I would. The pork has no fat globules or gristle, it's simply crispy and delicious (I know you're all entitled to your opinions, but if you don't like it, I will wonder wth is wrong with you), the beans are tender and the salsa gives every bite a burning kick...who cares that there's no rice! I don't need no stinkin' filler rice! The way to eat them is to pour a little salsa over every bite. I mean, don't get me wrong, the burrito is good on its own, but the salsa is what makes it a Tacos Moreno Al Pastor. I would say the only downside to them is the burrito butt- you're almost done but your last few bites are completely orange because all the pork grease has pooled down there while you ate. I usually just hand that part over to my boyfriend, who is glad to take it off my hands. ;) Sadly I do not live anywhere near Santa Cruz anymore, so I haven't had a Tacos Moreno burrito for over half a year now. The al pastor burritos here in Chico are alriiiiight, and I did finally find one taco truck that makes them quite tasty (El Paisa on 8th St, if you ever visit!), but they'll never be as good as Tacos Moreno. I wish I had the cash to make a special road trip to SC just to eat there.... P.S. Bring cash and plan to get it to go cause the place is small and you're not likely to find a seat!

My mouth is watering again writing about them. I only got 4 kinds because I was technically buying lunch for two people and really couldn't justify more. I ate half of each of them so I could try each kind. I got lengua, carnitas, chile verde and pollo. Perfect slightly thick steamed corn tortilla, savory tender delicious meats - chile verde and pollo were spicy. Great pinto beans. . . cabbage. OMG talking about it again is like food porn. *drool* Can I tell you what this isn't? crap crispy corn or flaccid floury flour tortillas with bland shredded chicken, grated random orange cheese and shredded iceburg lettuce and some shitty sweet tomatoey "salsa" WOOOOHOOOOOO! ok, I liked it a little. Now on to some more facts. . . A few tables to sit at inside, but mostly a takeout place. You can get guac and sour cream on the side. Mexican sodas, regular sodas, Corona, Carta Blanca and Bud in the cooler (with Lite versions of the beers too.) The fact that this made me SO very happy today may be a clue to some sort of imbalance but. . .I'm goin' with it.

It's a counter and a small room with tables and chairs but the burritos are great. The supreme burrito is a perfect balance of meat, beans, cheese, sour cream, salsa and cabbage. They have very good carnitas. I have only been here at dinner time and I am always surprised at how fast my order is ready. I don't know whether they are able to produce the food as fast during the day when the line goes out the door once you make it to the counter and place your order.

My niece took me here the other day. We both had the chicken tacos. There were great! The beans were perfect. nice braised chicken and shredded cabbage instead of lettuce. Not greasy at all but a fork helps. Anytime a great deal. My niece told me the veggy tacos are great and you don't miss the meat.

If you like real mexican, this place is the spot. No rice, no fillers. The tacos are huge so two is easily a meal. The burritos are big enough to have some the next day. The carnitas are delicious, so is the pastor. Straight-up delicious, cheap, authentic mexican food. Cash only.

Used to live in Santa Cruz; didn't know about this place back then. Visiting a friend who lives nearby, I got a chance to try it. So glad I did! Wow. I've been living in the Netherlands for 2 years now and I was suddenly struck with an insatiable hunger lust for a Moreno burrito. 2am and should really go to bed, but seeing that some self-entitled pricks had the audacity to question the glorious entity that is Tacos Moreno based simply on the lack of overly enthusiastic servitude of the cashier, I feel the need to speak my mind/stomach. We can leave the cashier out of it, it's 3/4 service, you're not paying for somebody to pat you on the back and tell you you're a good boy, you are exchanging money for the promise of food. Did he give you incorrect change? Did you receive food other than what you ordered? Did he punch your mother in the face? No? Then he did his job and you still probably didn't tip him for it. If his dad does own it like you suggest, then he probably doesn't make shit either way, and as much as you don't want him there, he probably wants out even more, so how about some empathy? And I gotta say, though we never embraced in a tender bro hug, I also never took his quietness to be negative in any way. Maybe you people just have nothing to offer in the way of conversation and assume that with your outrageously reasonably priced burrito, you also deserve a fake smile and quick reach around. Try mentioning the last Longhorns game and see what he says? Maybe he just isn't an avid disc golfer. His loss, but I'm not gonna judge him for it. I didn't look at the rest of you, but JD, you're from Santa Cruz bro, where in SC is there good service? It's kind of a trademark I think. I used to work at Zachary's and as long as I didn't yell at people, I was considered amazingly friendly! Worked out great tip-wise. Anyway, enough defensiveness. Everything I ever ordered from Moreno in the 8 years that I've been going there has been spectacular and coma inducing. The ingredients are fresh (like many of you said), well prepared, and paired with an extraordinary salsa that many men have killed for, or have at least sworn to be willing to do so for. In conclusion, if you demand a level of service that requires etiquette school, maybe find another spot, but if you want a burrito that will leave bring a smile to your face and multiple orgasms to your taste buds, Moreno might be for you. If you feel you might be self-entitled and a bit douchey, make sure you can accept somebody not treating you like hot shit for 30 seconds before going. I hope you can, because these burritos are spectacular!

I've been eating at Tacos Moreno on Water Street in Santa Cruz for over twenty years. It's been my hands-down favorite taco joint forever. Esteban, the owner, and his family have always been courtious, frendly and given service with a smile. However, over the last couple of years I've been getting less than stellar service as well as an extremely bad attitude from one individual who works there. I'm guessing this person is one of the owners sons. He grunts half responses when I order my food, gives me dirty looks and makes me feel like not going in there any more. Luckily they've opened a new location on the other side of town where I'll go from now on.

This place is awesome, won't say the best, because I think it depends on what type of Mexican food you are feeling. Personally, I love their grilled tortillas which makes the texture and taste super yummy, and the marinated cabbage salad instead of lettuce or pico de gallo. I have gotten their chicken burritos for years and love the salsa and fresh, crispy, light chips, but recently ordered the chile verde beef burrito with all the trimmings for my boyfriend and I kept stealing it. It was so tender and juicy, the regular salsa added a nice kick to the mild chile verde, and the guacamole and sour cream complimented this flavor infusion perfectly. Best non-hole in the wall, hole in the wall burrito/taco place and prices are reasonable for Santa Cruz.

Gosh, I have to say that I was very disappointed with this place. My carne asada burrito was pretty lackluster and the steak had quite a bit gristle in it. Overall, the burrito was extremely average to below average. I also don't understand why people rave about the salsa. Tasted almost flavorless to me. The burritos here are fantastic; text book perfect. The meat is very good (Chile verde beef!); the tortillas are crisped, so they are just a bit crunchy and flaky, and the burrito is full of meat, cabbage, and beans. Not over stuffed, but substantial. Probably the best burrito I've had in Santa Cruz, or anywhere. Tacos Morenos makes one reflect o just what a burrito could be.

What happened to this place? No more lengua burrito. Ordered carnitas instead. When the burrito came, it was all tortilla with little filling. First bite: nothing but tortilla with cold cabbage, same with the second bite. The rest of it was mostly beans and cabbage and with nothing we could identify as carnitas. No wonder no one was there at the height of the lunch hour.

I went here with my boyfriend for the first time this week and was really disappointed in the service. The guy taking our order wasn't listening at all to our requests (extra onion, no cilantro) and when we tried to correct him (he told the cook no onion), he ignored us. Later, he was talking on his cell phone while taking another order. My chicken burrito was good, but my boyfriend ended up with tacos that he didn't really enjoy because his order wasn't taken correctly. Their menu is very limited; you'd think they could pay attention to the few minor requests people make. I am sad because I liked my burrito, but the rude service will keep me from going back.

Humble little place where people sometimes must resort to sharing tables. Counter service, and your meal will be brought to you if they aren't too busy. Las quesadillas are to die for. Not the kind we typically see everywhere -- fried tortilla, filled with whole beans, cheese, meat if you want it cabbage, and salsa. They are also inexpensive. Food comes in plastic baskets and there are bottles of salsa on various tables to be shared. Yeah it's oily, but I choose to splurge every once in a while and get my finger-licking greasy. There is a great drink selection, but beware: NO ICE. All other food looks tempting and savory. What you see is what you get...or much more, really. This little hole-in-the-wall is wonderful...Yikes, I am experiencing a Pavlovian reaction this minute (drooling and jonesing) ! Grab a local paper from the newspaper bins outside the door an enjoy your quesadillas ! OH, another thing is that you'll "meet' the owner's daughter (through pictures on the wall) -- a three-time world boxing champion! Now *that* is cool.

We were so excited about eating at Tacos Moreno after reading all the positive yelp reviews. YUCK BLAH BLAH! I am ashamed that we spent 18.00 at this place. I ordered the al pastor burrito after the amazing reviews and it was flavorless. My husband was greatly disappointed in his burrito too. Next time we visit Santa Cruz we will stick to the pizza.

I agree with James. The al pastor burrito, extra crispy, is delicious. However, it is a super-fried burrito so be prepared to be weighed down and go into instant food-coma. Tortilla chips cost extra ($1.50 to be exact). I believe that t-chips are the bread to a Mexican restaurant so they should always be included. This is the reason for why I give Moreno a 3 star and not a 4 star.

A friend of mine who used to live in Santa Cruz highly recommended this place. So I tried it. It's...alright. Sorry, Ronnie. It's a nice small shop, with a friendly enough staff. A few tables, kept up pretty well. I ordered an al pastor burrito and a cheese quesadilla. The burrito was good. But I suppose with all the hype, I was expecting something stellar. Too much hype usually leads me a letdown. I think I liked the quesadilla better. I'd eat here again, but am not rushing back.

Absolutely the best muffugin BBQ pork carnitas tacos and burritos you will ever have the pleasure of devouring. I haven't been to Santa Cruz for over 10 years now and I live in Los Angeles, home to some great Mexican restaurants, but they all pale in comparison to Tacos Moreno, particularly their BBQ carnitas. Family owned and operated, this quaint little hole in the wall is as authentic as they come -- a landmark that should not be missed by any visitor or resident of Santa Cruz. I give it 3 thumbs up.

Came here because Leo's Taco Bar (our 1st choice) and Taqueria Michoacan (2nd choice) were both closed for the Super Bowl. Just makes you want to come back! Anyway, got the al pastor burrito (the chewy meat was unexpected and a bit off-putting) and veggie (husband loved). The service in this place reminds me of the old Seinfeld soup-nazi routine meets Jersey Shore--what appears to be the resentful second generation at the register, refusing to make eye-contact or appearing in anyway grateful for your business. But hey, I don't go to burrito shops to make buddies and since the place is tiny, I always get the food to go anyway. The key here is to use the sauce on every bite of the burrito! I am not a sauce fan usually, but the combination here is quite good, elevates a decent burrito to a darn good burrito (and there are a lot of darn good burritos in this town to choose from). Come a little before or after the lunch rush cause there is usually a line and no where to comfortably wait for your order. The three star rating has more to do with the poor service (your food is good, not great-spare the holier than thou routine, please).

I only buy the pollo burrito here because of the MOLE sauce they use it is hands down the best, and I only visit this location because at the other ones the portions are actually a bit bigger but the flavor is just not there. well known for being one of the best in town with alaways a line out the door during lunch hour and on the weekends, I personally would not wait too long for this place but I have from time to time to have a different fair than my regular taco joints. The food here is decent the tacos are a good size and usualy can order a coupe and be goood. I would hope so considering they are almost $3 each. The burritos here are not that big in size and a bit pricy for what you get. This is not my favorite places for burritos. The hot sauce which is supposed to be their own special is okay at best, I am a big hot sauce and spicy guy so I am harsh on my sauces. I would not be trying to bring this home with me. Decent Mexican food but overpriced and always a wait and no seating due to its interesting enough popularity.

I used to live in Santa Cruz. I go back once a year and always head straight to Tacos Moreno. I used to work at a vineyard -- and the crazy winemaker would take wine writers to this whole in the wall -- their first impression was to be insulted -- but quickly understood why -- such good food, fresh, comforting -- the best Mexican food -- it is as much of an out of body experience as a dinning experience -- al pastor -- but the quesadillas are to die for too....I know that sounds a little loco -- but true. There is now a Tacos Moreno at UCSC!!! Why did they have to wait until after I graduated? Actually I was already on the 5 year plan -- Tacos Moreno would have meant 8-9 years at a minimum. I don't know if their tacos or burritos are the best ever -- but the quesadillas are first rate. Tacos Moreno I miss you with all my corazon! Best out of body food experience for the money.

Oh man, the Yelp community really let me down on this one. I came here based on the high volume of 5 star reviews and the promise of some really good pastor meat but Tacos Moreno did not live up to the hype. When we arrived, we noticed that the place is really small and accepted cash only. Not a big deal, a lot of Taquerias we have been to are. However, the cashier was quite unfriendly. No smiles and one word answers - did we piss you off when we walked in and decided to give you our business? Then we found a table but it was dirty (someone just left) so we asked her to wipe it down. She did...but didn't look happy to do it. Talk about making us feel unwelcome. We went to order and were surprised that they had no aguas frescas or rice. Interesting since rice is a Mexican food staple, but okay. I ordered the Supreme Burrito de Pastor. The burrito was a good size for a meal, but I have had bigger burritos for the same price. Also, because the burrito had more room for filling there was a lot of excess tortilla. I felt like the burrito was 1/2 tortilla. The pastor meat was OK, but not the best. I don't really get the hype about it. Maybe it was just a style I haven't had before? I'm not sure but it was pretty dry which is unusual in my experience with pastor. My son got the cheese quesadilla. It was grilled a little too much and had a lot of char. He's not really a fan of charred tortilla (I know some are) but he was more upset when he found that the outer 1" of his quesadilla had no cheese at all. I know it sounds silly, but whenever we get quesadillas they have a ton of cheese all the way to the edge. Needless to say, we do not plan on coming back to Tacos Moreno. My favorite part about this restaurant is that they recycle, but that's just not enough. Sorry guys.

We read about this place in this month's Sunset Magazine. The food is really great and comes out fast. What Sunset neglected to report was the fact that it is one of many places in Santa Cruz where you can be treated poorly by the person waiting on you while irritating the locals behind you in line. If YELP ever figures out how to have separate ratings for food and service, Tacos Moreno would achieve the ultimate rating dichotomy. Go at your own risk if you love really good Mexican.

I have been coming here since I was a child and I love their food! It is still just as good as it was over 20 years ago. I like the salsa a bit better at the Water St. location, however I find the atmosphere and the service to be friendlier & nicer at the Capitola restaurant. And, I have to say that Capitola has stepped up their salsa and food to be almost exactly as great at the Water St. location in the last year. I always get a vegetarian burrito or the corn quesadilla which are both AMAZING! Best bet for to go or quick sit down Mexican food in SC.

Best burrito in town. You have to eat it there for the plentiful salsa. They use cabbage so don't go expecting refried beans. Get there early, because as everyone knows who know anything about taquerias, the meat is juicier in the morning. Get the lengua if you want the tastiest meat there, it is so moist and delicious. I had their chicken tacos w/guacamole, and they were crispy and freshly made. The chicken was shredded (not diced), which I like. I prefer whole pinto beans, rather than refried, and they added a nice buttery texture that complemented the cabbage (which adds a nice touch!). They did not scrimp on the ingredients at all, and I walked out of here with a full stomach. Before coming here though, you have to have the expectation though that the lines will be long. In response to some of the the reviewers who mentioned dirty tables - Have the expectation that the tables might be dirty. In humble opinion, you kind of have to take it with a grain of salt if you want good cheap food, and actually, a better measure for cleanliness would be looking in the kitchen, and not the dining room. I definitely would not consider them dirty "rotten" and they are not "unusually" dirty by rational standards. I'd definitely come here again to slam down some tacos!

I love, love, love this place- it's my favorite taqueria in town. I always get the corn quesadilla with carnitas (which is more like a corn taco, because it's filled with beans, cabbage, cheese, and salsa). However, I've also tried their burritos & flour quesadillas and those are great too. Their house salsa, in the squirt bottles, is absolutely amazing- best I've tried anywhere. Keep in mind there is no ambiance at this location- expect linoleum floors, funky shared tables, crowded seating, and a shabby view of Water Street. But the food is freaking delicious. Sometimes the person taking your order is rude and impersonal, but who cares? The food is great and cheaply priced for what you're getting. If you want better ambiance go to the Tacos Moreno on 41st Avenue.

In the semi-fried corn tortillas lay melted monterey jack cheese, pinto beans, cabbage and cilantro. Cheap and really delicious. The burritos also are flavored to perfection and none other of the 1,000 mexican places in Santa Cruz can come close to comparing.

lol at the "wow theres always a line out the door!". The line could literally be 2 people long and be out the door since this place is so small. Lots of my friends love this place, but I knew they were doomed after the following conversation. Me: Can i just get a bean and rice burrito? Cashier: We don't have rice? Me: Like, today?...or ever? I have been eating at Tacos Morenos for more 27 years now. I don't live in Santa Cruz anymore and I try to make this a must eat at spot when I am in town. I love their al pastor burritoes and their corn quesadillas are absolutely wonderful! The corn quesadillas reminds me of tacos since the corn tortillas are crisp and grilled in a pan! Yummy! I haven't found anything that matches their food or quality! Way to go, Tacos Morenos!

I was brought here by locals who swore up and down about this place. They were right about this place always having a line out the door. I eat a lot of burritos in the city, but Tacos Moreno superseded any San Francisco burrito I have ever eaten. I don't know if it was the cabbage or the fact that there was no rice in the burritos. Whatever it was that made the burritos here so good, I will be back. I hear they are famous for their quesdillas so I will try those next time.

I don't know what all the hype is about this place. I know a dozen people that swear by Tacos Moreno, but this place does nothing for me. I never understand why there's always a line out the door...actually, maybe it's because the dining is like 9 square feet. I used to frequent this spot, when I used to hang out in Seabright a lot, but I've never understood why people think their burritos are good. Weird overcooked meat, held in liquid over a steam bath...all day. I used to grub on the chicken quesadilla regularly, which happened to not be on the menu. I figured there would be a standard addition fee, but honestly, I never paid the same price twice for it. I got the impression that whoever was taking the order was skimming off the top. I remember the guy who was the shadiest...a greasy-looking, shifty-eyed, smirking dude, who was never in a hurry to do anything, with the line perpetually out-the-door. I always paid a weird amount with this guy, "$4.77 my friend". What?! As far as quality of ingredients, my colon knows when it processed Moreno's...enough said. I think the slow service and lines are part of their marketing strategy. It's like the line at a club, when you wait and wait, only to get in and see a deserted place. You drive by on Water and see the line out-the-door, so you are automatically predisposed to assuming that this place is good. Reality check: it's not.

This place is definitively average. Decent burritos for a good price, but no rice available in them. Pretty good salsa, but it costs extra money for the chips and salsa. And if you get take out, they'll only give you 2 measly looking containers. They don't accept cards, so you have to bring cash. The place is super small and provides barely any seating, practically forcing you to get food as take out. Dude at the counter gives off a really cold feeling. My friend told me this was the best place for Mexican food in Santa Cruz. I think it's just cause he's cheap as hell. Try Taqueria Santa Cruz instead. 2.5 stars.

Just simple food, but it taste super fresh and the the staff is always super friendly. They don't have much as far as a variety of salsa but they have this taco sauce that is super good. Well....let me UNHYPE a review for Tacos Moreno for you all. I've said it once and I'll keep saying it.....I have a rule for Mexican dives... We all should have ways of discerning bad dives from ones worthy of our time and hard-earned cash. So listen up....this advice can save you some grief!!! When I want good Mexican food, I look at the people in the kitchen....if the people making the food have a SILVER TOOTH, chances are good that you're in the right place....no SILVER TOOTH...walk away. Back to our regularly scheduled programme!! The food here is AWESOME and guess what?.....the lady making the food has FOUR SILVER TEETH!!!! I'm not kidding!!! Their quesadillas are THE BEST I have ever had. Their burrito Al Pastor is THE BEST gut bomb I have ever had the pleasure of carrying around in my stomach. Their chile verde tacos are to die for....I could go on and on...but THERE IS A REASON THE LINE STRETCHES OUT THE DOOR!!! Oh and those salsa squeeze bottles they are a MUST!....I down one of these with a burrito....TOTAL BLISS BABY!!! Wooohoooo!!!! No rice? guess what? I found out that some regions in Mexico do not use rice in their dishes. There are 31 states and all have distinctive cooking...neat huh? Rolex or not...this place is good. Try it out for yourself. Can I give it less than 1? I used to go here about six years ago and it was very good. I went tonight...the burrito was stone cold, the lettuce like rubber, and it was dry. I took it back and told them it was cold and dry and he said he would get a new one. The next was the same. I had not eaten all day and so ate it but now feel sick. never have i realized how much i actually enjoy rice in a burrito... the burritos here are made with quality ingredients, but with one element lacking... RICE! i believe that morenos looks at rice as a "filler" which is completely understandable, but rice also FILLS me up! my friends all love this place, and i definitely understand why. the salsa is amazing. the prices are fair. and the meat is flavorful. i got just a regular burrito, maybe that was my downfall. but i left this place still hungry... all my guy friends were content though. all in all, this place is unique and most certainly is unlike most other taquerias in santa cruz. i loved the flavor, just wish i had more substance. go here if you want quality mexican that tastes good! also, there's not a lot of variety on the menu. just the basics!

Visited the new Capitola location this evening. The food is pretty much identical to the original, but the setting has been upgraded quite a bit. A dozen tables with big comfortable chairs, outdoor patio seating, and no less than 3 big screen TV's. The counter clerk even brings the order to your table! They seem to be setting up for draft beer as well. So much better for dining in, bringing the famiily, etc. I had a carnitas burrito, which was just so-so, and an al pastor taco, which was superb. Classic Mexican street food. People who complain about the al pastor just don't understand - its *supposed* to be that way! Nice fresh chips - they taste a little strange with the house salsa, but nice nonetheless. I always loved the tacos, and the new setting is a welcome change.

Heard a lot about this place so decided to check it out the other day for lunch...We timed it just right (pure luck!) and were 2nd in line and able to get a table no problem... I had 2 veggie tacos (should've got 1...they were pretty big!) and it was really good....not mind blowing, but really good. My 2 year old loved the quesadilla with beans. The tortilla chips were the best chips I've EVER had. I'll seriously go back just for chips and salsa! By the time we were done, the line was out the door!

I remember when I went into this place and looked up at their menu and noticed they didnt have crispy tacos. I left and went back to Jalepenos and kept eating there (like a fool) for a year more. Then, finally, a buddy brought me over there, and I was broken. The carnitas was the best darn thing I have EVER had in a burrito and their chips and salsa are home made and fresh. Whenever im in Santa cruz, this is a must stop and eat place, even if I just finished a meal somewhere else, in which case, its a take a burrito back home and eat a few hours later place.

Tacos Moreno always delivers fast, simple, real Mexican food. I've always had the tacos or quesadillas, but tonight I had my first burrito, and it solidified my vote for 5 stars. Other taquerias stuff their tortillas with rice and iceberg lettuce. These guys fill 'em up with clean tasting beans, just the right amount of cheese (and it's melted!), a light touch of tomatoes, cabbage, cilantro, and onions. The best thing is that they put the tortilla on the flat grill first. It was toasty and flaky on the outside. Whatever you order from, you have to pour their spicy, roasted tomato salsa on each bite as you go. A little guacamole every now and then too. Despite the intimidating lines you see out the door, it's only because there is hardly any room inside to stand. They get the food out fast. My work sends orders for 30 people sometimes- they won't take an advance call and it only takes 10-15 minutes to get it all together and out the door.

The best burrito on Earth.... I live and die by a good burrito, and the quality of ingredients is unmatched by any of the other tons of burritos I've eaten (it's scary to think how many I might have eaten!!!). Why? #1 their chicken is succulent, not overcooked, and just the right amount of seasoning; #2 they don't put rice in their burritos which often causes other burritos to be unnecessarily filling; #3 they're not TOO big that you feel sick after you've eaten it; #4 they grill their tortillas to perfection so there's still a little crispiness; #5 the hot sauce is awesome; #6 they layer the fillings so there's not one bite of just ONE thing, every bite contains a little of everything; #7 they put cabbage in their burritos, not lettuce.... OK, I could go on, but do you really need MORE reasons than this? I've moved from Santa Cruz since and we will still make a trip JUST for the burritos... it's worth it....

Two words - FOOD POISIONING!! My partner and I ordered two chicken burritos, nothing fancy. We couldn't taste anything because of the horrible cayenne hot sauce, we couldn't finish them. Within 10 minutes we were RUNNING to find a bathroom. Within 40 minutes we were sitting at the ER bent over in horrible pain. The next day we called to tell them that perhaps they should look into this. I got yelled at over the phone and threatened if I ever came back and made trouble for then again! This after I spent 7 hours in the ER!!!! I looked them up on the health department's website and they have numerous violations for cleanliness that have not been taken care of. How on Earth in this place get so popular? The food is terrible (and dangerous), the staff is really really rude. Ultimately, dear reader it's up to you whether you choose to play gastronomic roulette, but as for me. I, my family and my friends will never ever darken their door again. The place should be bulldozed for the greater good and well being of all lovers of Mexican food. So let me say it again - FOOD POISIONING!

I don't know how they can get away with calling tacos corn quesadillas, but I'm not complaining. Since I discovered these for 2 bucks a pop, piled high with beans, fresh cabbage and tomatoes on a hot corn tortilla with amazing salsa, I've literally been coming for that meal once a week. Dry wall, cardboard, saltines. Seriously, I felt like the pig was attacked by some vampire (For the ladies, think Edward Cullen) who sucked all the blood/juice/life out of the pig, and then Tacos Morenos had some great idea to basically take that dry ass pig aka pork jerky, fry it up and stuff it in an Al Pastor burrito. Watergirl has no opinion on the al pastor. She does not eat pork. She dodged a really nasty meal this time.

Watered down, liquidy green stuff does NOT guacamole make. If you've read any of my other Mexican joint reviews, you'll know that I consistently give places that don't do guacamole right a bad rap. In California, at least, I have come to expect fresh guacamole (i.e. chunky avocados and maybe diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro - really whatever you want to make it special). My coworker and I were excited about going here and loved every bite of our corn quesadillas!! The quesadillas are like tacos, but are packed full of deliciousness. I thought they had good flavor and were quite filling. I ordered two and with the chips and salsa, it was enough. The only downside to this place is the fact that it has like 5 tables total. If you don't get here early, then you will not be able to sit down.

Just the right size if I've worked up a solid apatite, half will do if I've just been at my desk all day and can restrain myself. The tacos are perfect for a lighter meal. After reading all the good reviews about this place, I thought I would go try it out. And after a recommendation from a friend, I decided to try my first taste of an al pastor burrito. I don't think I had a high expectation of this place after reading the reviews. I've had many a burrito in my time, and I know what I like. And this place... I just don't like. If I wanted to get a small burrito with HARD meat and LOADS of grease, I'd go to a taco truck. I mean, even burritos from the taco trucks that I've been to don't have hard meat and don't even amount to the neon orange oil that dripped all over my hands. I didn't even mind the cabbage because when I was really young I had the most delicious burritos (which I cannot find anymore) all the time from a tienda in Oakland, but it was FRESH cabbage. Also, I love Spanish rice. I noted that they didn't have it, and didn't mind, but I think it would've helped make that burrito a ton better. Man, I'm getting more and more infuriated at how bad my burrito was. Maybe I could understand if it was really busy and they got sloppy with it. But no one was there. Maybe two other people besides me. Thanks for getting me my burrito fast, though. That was totally NOT worth the 40 minute drive (stupid traffic) from campus (I'd just gotten out of lab and was starving). Sorry, but I don't think I'll ever try this place again. If this is what good al pastor is, I think I'll pass. I need to find a new place that will rekindle my will to venture from my usual pollo asado or carnitas.

Okay, so the hot sauce was gross. Tasted metallic. But maybe some Santa Cruzians like eating pennies? The meat is kept in these little foil packets. And the burrito itself was very cabbage heavy. i had the al pastor corn quesadilla, which looked and had the characteristics of a crispier soft taco (you also have a flour tortilla option). it tasted really healthy to me, more like baja-style, which isn't bad cuz i love me some shredded cabbage! the meat itself wasn't succulent or fatty/red tinged-- to me it tasted more like pork prepared more in an adobada salvadorean kinda way, and the meat wasn't tender-- it was tough, like old meat sitting out too long or overcooked. i would order this again if i could change my meat selection because the SO's carne asada version was much better. i really loved their salsas. the red one that came with the chips (which you have to pay extra for) and thought the salsa verde on each table was OUTSTANDING. i also tried the chicken burrito, which was just okay. edible and huge, but no component of any kind (rice, beans, meat, tortilla, etc.) stood out to me. we had to share tables with strangers because it's tiny, and if you think eating with someone is a personal thing, you may wanna think about getting your stuff to go. they take cash only. just your standard fare for a sleepy, kickback college town.

This one gets 5 stars for the salsa. While I am on my SC kick, I had to give a shout out to my favorite burrito joint. As a vegetarian, I have only eaten their bean burritos and quesadillas. I wasn't even turned off when they started serving lengua. Anyways, they have salsa in ketchup containers on the table. Squeeze a shot of salsa into each bite, and you will be certain to enjoy.

Food isn't bad but there's nothing that makes you want to come back. The salsa's good but not great. But the worst thing was one night about 45 minutes before their listed closing time, they were mopping the floor with this awful smelling bleach cleaning material, which had a very powerful and terrible smell that was infiltrating our food. We kindly informed the worker how bad the smell was for eating but he continued and we were driven to move to eat outside on a cold and windy night. Don't come here if you're looking for quality Mexican food.

I was won over by the fact that instead of just using pico de gallo, they actually list the ingredients separately so you can omit anything you don't like or are allergic to. No rice in the burrito means room for more veggies and those amazingly good frijoles. Cabbage is used instead of lettuce and you can add guacamole. I'll have to try the tacos next time but their vegetarian burrito is something I'll be going back for. Bring your cash cos they only take cash.

In my opinion their burritos are pretty good. What makes them stand out is the green chile beef, the salsa, and their amazing breakfast burritos. Not the best around but every once in a while it really hits the spot.

I dunno, I am new to the area, and have been there 3 times, all three times they got my order wrong and the staff was not very friendly and the food was far from spectacular. I like this place because the menu is very simple and to the point. Their tacos are big and are a good value. Their burritos taste good and fresh, especially because they add cabbage to their burritos and tacos, something that other places don't do. They have good salsa, and overall a good taqueria experience.

Arguably Santa Cruz's favourite/best Taqueria. You have to eat there yourself to try it out. Their meat is the tastiest, but I found the burritos to be a bit skimpy on the extras. I loved the beans and rice, and the spiciness was just perfect, but I also found it to be really rich. Love the family atmosphere, always a line out the door, and affordable for the starving student.

Taco's Moreno's is my all time favorite Taco joint in all of Northern California. Whenever I'm in town I try to stop in. All the food is really good but the Carnitas and the corn quesadillas are amazing. The fresh made chili that sits on the table waiting for you is the main reason I go back time and time again. It is also pretty cool that one of the daughters of the owners is a boxer and they have info on her fights in San Jose in the restaurant. I wish they made agua fresca de sandia.

11 years and counting - this place absolutely rocks! I don't know what I like most: their flour quesadillas with beans and cheese (just ask for the beans), the veggie burritos, or their chicken soft tacos. Either option, or a combination therein, will always result in a great meal. I also am a sucker for their chips and salsa though they charge a bit for it. Oh, and it's nice to be greeted with a warm smile every time the owner or one of his family member recognizes you as a repeat customer. Go Tacos Moreno!

I moved up from Southern California a few months ago, and was desperate to find a good burrito. There's plenty in town that are adequate, but after my first bite at Tacos Moreno, I knew this place was going to be my spot in town. The beans, the cheese, and the meat, are all of very good quality. I love the cabbage in the burritos as well. Anyone complaining about cabbage has never been to Mexico. The guy who runs the joint always has a smile on his face, and everybody is always so happy because the food is awesome. My advice to you is if you want to miss the line out the door, get there before noon. If I ever plan on eating there, I go as soon as they open at 11am.

Some 24 years ago a blessed buddy of mine took me here and said "This burrito will change your life." It did. I've eaten there hundreds of times. I've even eaten there twice in one day. I gave up vegetarianism for the blessed al pastor (after 4 years of their excellent quesadillas, I just couldn't take it any more). I have flown their food to the Taco needy in Seattle. I have driven hours to get there. I take every foreign visitor I host there. And I have wept openly when, unannounced, they have closed for vacation. Bottom line: Blessed is the pig and chicken that gives their life for Mr. Moreno's al pastor burrito. But be prepared. If you enter the sanctum expecting a typical rice filled burrito, you are not ready. If you open your mind beyond the archetypal burrito you are in for one of best food experiences to be found anywhere. Eat there now. It might change your life too... See you in cardiology!

Best Al Pastor ever. although their system may not seem friendly to other reviewers, they're in business to sell good, inexpensive Mexican food, and they have got it dialed. There isn't a lot of extra space for people to linger, so they only take a few orders at a time. Whenever we have out of town guests, one of their first stops is here.

I've been eating here since they opened in 1982 and its stayed great. The only thing is the crowds are out of hand. There is a lesser known Tacos Moreno family restaurant called "De La Hacienda Taqueria" at 354 Washington St cross street Laurel St (across from Ultramat). They just moved to this location from 303 Beach Street, which they said they were going to close but still have not, so for the time being enjoy both locations. It is way better than Tacos Moreno's at UCSC--so students make the drive and reward your taste buds. Tacos Moreno's fans on the Westside and downtown avoid the lines and eat here. The family that owns this place is nice and needs to hear feedback about what their new place needs as far as atmosphere.

If you like "hot sauce" that taste like marinara sauce. This is your place. Quite possibly the worst "Mexican food" I've ever had. I grew up a half an hour from the border and I know good Mexican when I taste it. Don't recommend this place at all. It is disgusting to over hear people raving about this place. LOVE the food here - simple, cheap, and always good. Especially the salsa, which is amazing. They really ought to bottle and sell it! Staff is definitely not the friendliest - they often seem annoyed to be taking your order. However, considering you only have to interact with them for two minutes while you order...i don't think it's so bad. Tip: if you plan on ordering the veggie tacos, order the quesadilla instead. You get two, and they are the EXACT same thing as the veggie tacos (NOT a quesadilla like you usually think of one), and a little cheaper. Total mystery why that is. Awesome food!

I'm a true connoisseur of Mexican food if nothing else. I was raised on it and couldn't live without it. I also have a deep appreciation for authenticity. This places exceeds my expectations in both areas. The food is fresh and cooked to perfection. The flavors are exactly right. It's a small family joint. They keep it simple and it works for them. The menu is small but more than adequate. They don't do refried and they don't do rice and I love them for it. As if Mexican food weren't filling enough? I also have learned to respect the fact that they close down during the winter to take a vacation for what seems like several weeks. Good for them!

I've only ever eaten at the Tacos Moreno location at Merrill College at the UCSC campus--but their green chile meat burritos are like crack. Now that I've eaten one, I have to eat one every Tuesday and Thursday for the rest of the year. What makes their burritos so good? It isn't a question of homemade tortillas (theirs are not) or spicy meat (it isn't, really, esp. compared with NM food) but there's a great BALANCE of everything inside--rice, meat, whole beans . . . and it's just enough to make me full until dinner. Plus, for $5.50 with a can of soda, I don't feel like I"m being robbed. Do yourself a favor and don't spoil the burrito with guac and sour cream.

let me just tell you all something.... tacos moreno makes birria...and not the "birria de chivo" (goat soup) kind. they make BBQ beef style birria, and its one of my favorite mexican foods in the world....and they do it awesome. ya sure, i get free oil changes for the subaru at the near by dealership, but i can get the oil changed in san francisco and save a lot of time, but there is no birria in SF (or yet i have found) plus... a big thumbs up for having mexican green apple soda!

i feel like i am being a little generous with these two stars. i'm a recent so. cal transplant and of course, i've been missing mexican food like crazy. after trying out a few places in santa cruz (with lackluster results), i decided to ask locals where i should go. everyone suggested tacos moreno. so i checked it out. their supreme burrito was at best, less than supreme. a bland, bland, bland waste of almost $6. (!!!) i don't understand this area's love for whole beans and watery salsa. but then, everyone in here was white, so... yeah. this is not decent or even respectable mexican food. it's catering to a crowd who apparently loves watered down, whitewashed caca. for the person who saw a beautiful rainbow of clientele here once...i wonder if we were visiting the same place. i've been by here numerous times, and have only seen soccer moms and dude bros. plus, charging for chips and salsa should be punishable by law. charging more than $3 for almost any burrito should at least be a ticketed offense.

They grill their burritos instead of steaming them. Already love it. There is no parking and the place is the size of a postage stamp and the line wraps around the block. Hands down the best taqueria In Santa Cruz! I have been coming here for 23 years and even with all of the new places that have sprouted up all over town, Tacos Moreno remains #1. The corn quesadillas are definitely a stand out and the carnitas tacos are always a favorite of mine. The salsa is absolutely addictive, as has been attested by many. I like that they use whole pinto beans, cabbage (instead of lettuce) and tomatoes...simple but oh so yummy.

My favorite Mexican joint in Santa Cruz, and apparently other people think so too since there's always a line out the door at lunch time. Simple burrittos made with good ingredients and great salsa. Don't come here if you want the new age wrap style, or if you want totally huge stuffed with everything burritos, that's not what they do. My favorite is the BBQ pork burrito, sometimes with sometimes without cheese depending on my mood. With my wife sometimes we do that plus a corn quesadilla and a couple beers, makes a great cheap, quick lunch.

I'm not really sure what the hype is about this place. Perhaps the sauce you squeeze out of the plastic containers are what make it, but I've found anything I've ordered (in the 4 or 5 times I've been) here to be overrated. The carne asada here is somewhat dry and has a stringy texture. It's also not as well marinated as Los Pinos. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what to try besides the Al Pastor?

doug at spokesman bicycles (pretty good bike shop) recommended this place to me today and i am impressed. it was my first time here and the cashier recommended i try the bbq pork al pastor. the burrito was a good size, not huge not small. what stood out the most was the freshness and the taste. the hot sauce on the table was the icing on the cake though. i would have to say one of the best burritos i've had (other than the burritos that i had in mexico a few months ago). this place must be really popular because there was a line that went outside. i'm assuming it was the lunch hour rush. when i was inside it just started to get crowded. i see how it can get packed though bc this place is pretty small. all in all, great experience and i would come here again.

Soul satisfyingly good. I've been going to Tacos Moreno for 15 years and the quality and consistency of their food is unbeatable. They don't have a lot of the bells and whistles of other taquerias, but their food delivers on pure goodness. I'm normally a taco person, but here, I love their burritos. The bean and cheese is just perfect - whole, well flavored pinto beans, lots of gooey jack cheese, shredded cabbage, and their addictive vinegary tomatillo salsa (I just keep adding more of this from the squeeze bottle on the table) and no rice (which in my opinion makes for a much more satisfying burrito experience. Ah, just writing about this place makes me want to run over there lunch. Too bad it's only 10 a.m. Go, you'll love it.

Contrary to the name, this is not the place to go to for tacos. It's the burritos that make this place worth the drive (from just about anywhere) and the wait (always a line). The al pastor with cheese is the perfect burrito, plenty of spice and flavor especially with liberal squirts of thier salsa. It is true that occasionally you might experience a chunk of dried out meat, but that's not enough to stop me from eating. The asada is also very tasty. I'm not a fan of thier guacamole, which is fine because I don't really care for guacamole in my burritos. They grill their tortillas which automatically puts them 1UP on places that steam and they put shredded cabbage which actually gets tastier as it gets a little cooked by the hot ingredients instead of turning into a soggy mess like so much lettuce. And for those of you that complain about the lack of rice, GET OVER IT! Rice is just a filler anyway. That's how other places make bigger burritos for cheap, by giving you less meat. I HATE RICE IN BURRITOS. But I love Tacos Morenos.

If God were to create only one food that cost less than $2, the "quesadilla" at Tacos Moreno would be it. A flavorful corn tortilla covered in cheese, folded like a taco, and filled to the brim with cabbage, pinto beans and tomato, this is no ordinary quesedilla. i find that i can't go more than a week or two without a burrito from tacos morenos! it's common for there to be a line out of the door (which isn't saying too much, the restaurant is pretty tiny) and believe me, it is worth it. i am a fan of their vegetarian and supreme vegetarian burritos, and there plain bean and cheese (no cabbage or salsa) is heavenly and the cheese quesadillas are simple but delicious. their chips are also very good, and plenty salty, but the tastieness fades as they cool down. overall, if you are looking for a good burrito, i'd stop by tacos morenos...the service is fast and friendly, and the food is not to miss!

I really like their burritos and bean-n-cheese tacos, haven't tried the other stuff because I like these two so much. Their hot sauce is really hot but very good on these too. However, last time I was in there I was unhappy because after I ordered my total came out over a dollar higher than I expected, and he told me the prices on their menu were out of date. That just doesn't seem right to me, and I had already waited in a long line to order so I wasn't going to cancel at that point. It seemed a bit like false advertising or something. Anyway, other than that I really like this place.
