In my best Robert DeNiro, from the movie Analyze This, impression (pointing my finger and waving it at the restaurant) "You, You, You....You're good you." The lunch I had here the other day was pretty darn good. I was surprised by the ambiance and the fancyness portrayed inside the restaurant. Plus it was packed with people. I went with the Black Mushroom Beef with a side of Chow Mein. Plentiful Black Mushrooms and delicious tender Beef. The sauce was some of the best I've had. My Chow Mein was lacking a little bit but it was just a side and nothing special. Also, the veggies that were included on the side were really good. The yellow and green Zucchini were really good and fresh. I didn't like the sweet and sour soup at the beginning, but I'm not a big fan of that soup anywhere I go. Really great lunch and more than made up for my terrible lunch up the street at 3 Brothers From China. Just come here instead, no questions asked.

From the outside the signage isn't all that visible from the street; at least not enough for me to notice on my own. That's what I love about recommendations--they get you to try places you otherwise wouldn't even notice. What a gem this place is! It's tastefully decorated, the service was superb & the food exceptional. We never wanted for thirst, a clean plate & certainly did not leave hungry. In fact I'm writing this review cause I'm too stuffed to sleep. Onto the food: We ordered the Schezucan dinner for two. It came w/ an egg roll (tasty), fried prawn (another tasty bite), crab puff (too much mayo or cream cheese for my taste) & traditional dipping sauces (hot mustard + sweet n sour sauce). Next was the hot & sour soup which was good & filling. My hubbie ordered the duck cooked in tea leaves. It came in fajita like slices wrapped in Chinese pancakes w plum sauce. It was delicious! The duck itself was amazing: soft w a roasted almost bacon-y taste. Not fatty, greasy cuts of duck, but high quality grain fed ducks. I ordered the honey walnut prawns. This was divine!! As I bit into each prawn I could hear & feel the outside crunch, yet my tongue was met by the softness of the perfectly cooked shrimp & sweet tang of the sauce. I then squeezed an orange slice over my next prawn & ate it w some honey walnuts. Amazing! I declare I will be back. Just simply the best Chinese food in the bay.

Terrible service! Called to place a to go order and was immediately put on hold. Then called back to see where it was (couldn't find it) and they were very rude. When I came in to pick up my order they were rude no thank you come again, no nothing. Almost got home and realized they gave me no soy sauce no fortune cookie no utensils napkins nothing! Went back for soy sauce and waited up front for a long time, the lady up front was on the phone laughing talking about photographs or something. NO ill be right with you no acknowledgment, no smile, nothing so rude. Then when I told her why I came back ( there was nothing with my order like soy sauce) she simply said OH really? I believe she was the owner and offered no apology nothing they were terribly rude and I will NEVER come back.

I have been eating at Uncle Yu's since the early 1990's and this is, in my opinion, the Best Chinese restaurant in the East Bay. On my last visit, Uncle Steve, B-do and I met for dinner and had a really great experience. The service is always great here. The servers and staff are very attentive, and go out of their way to make sure your visit is going well. To start, we had the pork pot stickers. These were nicely steamed then quickly seared to give you a wonderful, chewy outside and fresh pork and vegetables on the inside. Delicious! On numerous previous visits, I've also had the BBQ pork appetizer, and it's my favorite of any Chinese place around here for sure. For dinner, we shared the Honey Walnut Prawns and General Tsou's chicken specialties, a gluten free chicken for B-do, and BBQ Pork fried rice. Let me say, this is the best Honey Walnut Prawns we've ever had. I make sure that someone at the table orders this whenever I am here. I also have to note that this is also the best General Tsou's chicken I've ever had. It is not deep-fried like in other places. The chicken in cut into very small chunks then stir-fried quickly in a wonderful garlic sauce (with a little heat). The pork fried rice was nice and light, but with great flavor. I love their rice! In all, the only miss was the gluten free chicken dish which was good but not great. Overall, this is the place to go for Chinese in the East Bay. The food is made with fresh, quality ingredients. The flavors are delicious and the portions are very good size for the moderate prices. The interior is spacious and elegant. Its great for lunch with co-workers or a date in the evening. The service is very responsive and friendly - every time. Iced Tea Rating: 3 stars. Lots of refills but they use Brisk. Eeeck!

For San Ramon, this is a 4..but in general it's a 3. Uncle Yu's is definitely not a down home, hole-in-the-wall, mom and pop chinese restaurant, but the food is not bad given that it is A) in San Ramon where rent is high and prohibitive of such establishments B) is very spacious C) the servers are dressed all snazzy, some in tuxes I had the szechuan beef lunch special which came with hot and sour soup. The meal was good, not the best I've ever had, but good for a chinese fix. It doesn't top Annie's Panda in Vallejo, but for lunch in San Ramon, it will do.

Uncle Yu's is the spot if you want to hit mediocre Chinese food. The service is pretty friendly, and the staff is attentive, but I just did not enjoy the food that much. Why? There are a few reasons. 1) The food is pretty bland. 2) It's really really greasy. Even for Chinese food standards. 3) They have some special, non traditional dishes. I had a filet Mignon salad. Meh. Stick with the traditional ones. 4) The portions are only so so. So overall, this place is pretty average to below average. But as said before, the staff couldn't be friendlier. I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

I've come and go from this plaza over the years and have always wanted to come in and try it as I see a good amount of traffic that flows in and out... eh. I would've lived without it. Ambiance and service is as mentioned in the reviews below, impeccable. Food wise? Maybe because I'm Filipino and have been exposed to a lot of Asian food but this place is VERY Americanized. I get it though, it's likely fusion maybe but chow mien shouldn't be orange, you know? It looked like it was spaghetti but with hong kong style noodles?? I don't know what else was ordered as it was for a party and everything else was eh.. honestly, just okay. Nothing spectacular. I wouldn't find myself coming back on my own will... if it was for a party of some sort which is likely the case, I'll live.

Uncle Yu's has been a go-to place for lunch, dinner, even special meals with family and friends for at least 12 years, maybe more! I love the food, service, and ambiance. I usually test a place by ordering Mongolian Beef spicy and Hot and Sour soup to get a feel for greasiness factor, spice level control, and cooking and serving skill. As I rated 5 stars above, those 3 factors were all done very professionally and to my liking. I recently took the opportunity to enjoy a 5 course "fine dining" menu which was a special offering. We had orange roughy as one main course and 1/2 Chinese deep-fried chicken as the other. The starters included a Chinese-style Dungeness crab cake and salt-and-pepper baby lobster tails. The whole meal was amazing. Not necessarily the traditional Chinatown experience, they have white tablecloths and wine glasses at each place-setting, but great, fresh and tasty food served by courteous and attentive servers/wait staff. My father is a wine lover and is constantly impressed by the wine list, and they have hard liquor as well.

The food is good here and the service is awesome, unlike the livermore location. The other difference is that the decor of this place looks like it hasn't changed since the 80s. So take your pick, come here for better service bit worse ambiance and better ambiance and worse service for the livermore location. Good food, good service, average ambiance.

YUM. Walnut Prawns anyone? Wonton Soup? Yes, please. Yes, it's a tad pricy, but Uncle Yu's is worth it. I always make a point of going when I'm in town. San Ramon is kind of lame when it comes to good eats, but this place won't disappoint.

We are new to the area and had takeout from Uncle Yu's last week. The service was friendly and efficient. I was asked if I wanted any rice, and when I said just what comes with it, I was told that rice was extra. I've never experienced that with Chinese take out before! We had basic stuff: chicken and veggies and beef and broccoli. it was fine. We also ordered the cabbage fennel salad. It was just a ton of red cabbage with lots of walnuts and a little fennel, fruit and dressing. Not bad, but not not delicious like some fennel citrus salads, and certainly not worth ordering again. It's good for quick take out, and beautiful inside.

This is a very safe place to bring someone for Chinese food. Most the dishes are unlikely to offend anyone, they have a few spicy dishes but for the most part most their food is quite tame. The food is always consistent and good, but it really doesn't stand out as being outstanding in any way. I would recommend getting the tea smoked duck and rainbow chicken appetizers. Both are interesting tastes and delicious, and you can eat both with your hands which is always fun. It should be noted that Uncle Yu's has an amazing wine list, and their staff seems fairly knowledgeable on what kinds of wines will compliment what kinds of good. In addition to the impressive wine list, Uncle Yu's has great ambiance and amazing service which merits it an extra star in my book. Another tip: Get the cherries jubilee for desert.

Hot and sour soup - tasted kind of bitter and not really sour enough. Eggplant - super greasy, flavor is ok. I thought authentic Chinese restaurants were greasy, this was twice as greasy. Gag me. Kung pao chicken - not spicy and again super greasy. Oh and my stomach is starting to churn right now...brb. I just had food poisoning.

I've always liked Uncle Yu's! They serve good quality, fresh Chinese food. When I was a meat eater I loved all of their meat dishes. I crave their deluxe vegetables, with cashews and brown rice. I've been gluten-free for about a month now. I went there for lunch with a friend of mine this week and was pleasantly surprised. They have an extensive gluten-free menu, and I was able to have my favorite meal with a light g.f. sauce. And...they even brought me some g.f. soy sauce without me asking. My meal was healthy, and delicious! The service is pretty consistent also.

Good location, good service, quiet atmosphere, prices are a bit high for lunch. This is a nice place to take your business meetings to for lunch. The sweet and sour pork that I ordered wasn't crispy enough for my liking. I will still choose Pearl Garden down the street because for less than $7, I can get a huge plate of yummy hunan chicken there and really good soup that will feed me for 2 meals compared to paying $8-10 here. For lunch on my own I can sacrifice the nice decor for cheap yummy food. :)

I've been dragged here more times than I would choose--my bosses have liked it more than the underlings. It's reasonably priced and reasonably close to work, it has tablecloths, but the food just falls flat with me. I have to agree with Mei W.: the food is not very authentic and this place apparently appeals mostly to people that aren't asian foodies. It's close to a 3 star in my book, but the bottom line is that I only eat here when the boss treats. When it's my pocketbook, I head elsewhere.

I got a little excited when my girlfriend wanted to take me to the Chinese place she loved when she was little. I'm not sure if she had great memories of being there with family or if she remembers it so fondly because it was different, but I'm guessing it wasn't because the food was very good. We started with the salad with chicken on top (not Chinese at all but she said it was a favorite) and the egg drop soup. The salad was clearly out a bag, complete with matchstick pieces of carrot that flopped around. Dressing was sweet, but tasty. The soup was a disaster. Looked like egg drop soup but was overly gelatinous. I had one bite and felt like my mouth was being coated with goo. We continued the meal with Kung Pao chicken and Pork Chow Mein. The chicken was actually pretty good but could have used some more spice. The Chow Mein was dry and bland, generally uninteresting. We didn't have any problems with service, everyone was friendly and attentive. It wasn't a terrible experience, but I would seek out other Chinese in the East Bay.

For quite a while now, my family has come to Uncle Yu's for all birthdays and special occasions. The food is absolutely delicious and the service is wonderful. Atmosphere is nice. It's usually quite quiet with soft music playing in the background. Big round tables and family-style food makes this the PERFECT place to come for a special family occasion. Recommended dishes: -crab puffs -roasted chicken (comes with incredible ginger sauce) -mu shu chicken -honey walnut prawns -10 ingredient chow mein Ming is our favorite waiter -- but all of the staff is great!

The food was not good. The lemon chicken was a bit chewy, like it had been kept warm for a long time and cooked twice. The batter was bland and not crispy, and there was a distinct flavor to the chicken that was bland and unwashed. The suace was distinct plain lemon juice from a bottle mixed with viniger and water and was seperating and poor. The honey walnut prawns were undercooked and some were not fully peeled. The batter was soggy and bland, and the sauce tasted like mayo mixed with some viniger and the walnuts were meh kinda dry and piled on the side instead of included in the sauce as part of the recipe. The steamed rice was starting to crystalline after 10 minutes and wasn't fluffy, and had a poor taste. The service was nice and fast when I was making my order and when i was picking it up, but when I came back to return the food it was a different story. They made me wait a few minutes while several different staff members came by to give me a sour look, then after the gauntlet of looks they realized I had no shame, the manager came to the counter and didnt say anything for 2 minutes. Then the chef came out and took off his apron almost looked like he was gunna say lets go outside and fight, then i was suttounded by staff and the manager leaned in the chef starts talking to me like its a mafia LOL.......He's all, let me make something for you, you look hungry. I said thats ok, I have to go thanks, he asked what was wrong with the food, I tried to be polite while still explaining that i didnt like the food, and he said it was probably because i got the food to go that it wasnt very good, so i said then why do you do to go? I then said i had had other food to go that was good. he then again offer to make me something but i said no, and after another 2 minutes of odd starring contests and waiting to see if I would leave, they gaave me a void receipt. I will never go back there, this is so common for there to be sketchy/shitty chinese restaurants in the bay area its kinda amusing. As long as I can take my uneaten food back for my money I am happy to entertain thier idea of what a restauraunt should be like. There is a decent hole in the wall by safeway, and a chinese place calls minis or something like that thats good.

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. I would consider it to be more of an upscale Chinese restaurant, linen table cloths, decent wine list, blah, blah, blah but the location is a bit random for the atmosphere. It's in a strip mall next to a Baskin Robbins, oh well. I like it because of the food, the veggies are always cooked perfectly. They are not too mushy and not too crispy, with a hint of ginger. They offer a daily lunch menu that ranges from $7.95-$8.50, it's a choice of Chinese food staples that come with veggies, and choice of brown/white rice or chow mien. If you are going for lunch you will be served quickly and you will go back to work happy.

OK food, but will be insearch for a better chinese place. The fried lobster is BLAND. They throw frsh jalapenos on it for what? Certainly doesn't give it flavor. I'm also a purist when it comes to my eggdrop soup... they add tofu, peas, carrots and water chestnuts. The General Tao's chicken is not spicy like it should be, and the chicken comes cut up in tiny pieces. The only thing I was pleased with was the chicken and broccoli. But if you mess up that dish then you shouldn't be in business. Overall I tought it could have been a lot better based on all the reviews.

If you're feeling like Chinese cuisine and need to celebrate something special, Uncle Yu's is perfect! The food is not only good, but ambience, service and presentation is first class. There's a full bar and the wine list is pretty extensive for a Chinese restaurant. They've even got Louis XIII for $125 a shot on their dessert menu. The deep-fried eggplant appetizer has got to be the best dish here! The portions are a good size and not overly greasy. Uncle Yu's also has a Gluten-Free section on their menu. It's great that people who have to be on such diets don't have to be restricted from eating such flavorful foods here!

I was a regular customer while living in San Ramon and honestly I would probably drive here to eat if I had a craving for Chinese, I don't know a think about authentic but I can say this, they have real quality food. My boyfriend is a chef and he even thinks that this is quality food. We usually get the twice cooked pork or the szechuan chicken They are both really tasty and my CIA graduate appreciates the way the vegetables are cooked, he said its rare to find places that cook vegetables correctly,

I always have to laugh when people are disappointed with the less than authentic Chinese food here. Get a clue folks, it's in San Ramon. If you want the real deal, get off your lazy ass and go into the City; try House of Nan King. I always enjoy the food here and except when they get really busy, the service is usually pretty good.

Tried the lunch specials. Two orders of mongolian beef, steamed rice. One order of spicy chicken breaded nuggets with pork fried rice. One order of pad thai. The mongolian beef was more onion than beef. Rice portions were a bit on the small side. LIked the veggies on the side though my dining companions would have given up their veggies for more beef. Where's the beef??? The chicken nuggets were white meat but very dry. I needed more sauce to make it palatable. Service was very good. Probably would not go back though.

After discovering Taipan in Palo Alto, I kept trying to remember what other restaurant it reminded me of...and I finally realized that other restaurant is Uncle Yu's. Like Taipan, Uncle Yu's is a higher quality, higher-end Chinese restaurant catering to a palate that prefers not-so-heavy, not-so-oily sauces and a delicate flavor. My parents held my younger sister's wedding reception here. The elegant interior is perfect for such special occasions. We've also brought the in-laws here for dinner a couple times, and they enjoyed the food very much. Trust me, that says a lot about Uncle Yu's.

I came here for the lunch special on a week day. The place was pretty full, especially considering it was a Tuesday. I ordered the Sweet n Sour prawns lunch ($8.95) that came with hot and sour soup, veggies and a starch side (I went with pork fried rice). It was delicious! And just the right amount to keep me full but not stuffed (and I'll be honest, I'm one of those that usually stuffs themself when it comes to eating chinese food). Recently I've noticed a lot of restaurants just shoving as many tables as possible into a small space. Not Uncle Yu's. They have a comfortable distance between tables and very nice decor to boot. I was able to come in, order, eat at a nice pace, and leave.. fully satisfied and all in an hour to accomodate my work break. Definitely recommend.

Mmmm. Had Uncle Yu's ordered in today for a lunch meeting - the highlight of my day for SURE. I had the lunch special with the Yu Shiang Chicken. The chicken was spicy, shredded and stir fried with mushrooms, zucchini and water chestnuts. Yum. The sauce was light and not too oily. I love how they serve the lunch special with a side of veggies - perfect carb/protein balance. Makes me look forward to the next lunch meeting at work - hopefully I'll get Uncle Yu's again and get to try out another divine dish!

Yesterday I went out with friends and had dinner at Uncle Yu's. This time we started with hot and sour soup and soft duck spring rolls. The soup was really spicy, but not so sour. No worries there. The spring rolls had very tender strips of duck that were not at all greasy. For our entree we had beef with chinese vegetables. The beef was so tender I didn't even have to chew it. This was a great dining experience that confirms why I love Uncle Yu's so much.

Lunch specials!! Served with soup, veggies and choice of sides. Our order: Mongolian beef, chicken pud thai, pork fried rice and the dragon and phoenix bird's nest. It reminded me of the bird's nest they serve at an asian wedding. It had jumbo prawns and chicken chunks sauteed with vegetables in a potato nest. Yummy!! Their almond cashew chicken was good and so was their sweet and sour pork. Service was top notch and this is a higher end Chinese restaurant. Way nicer than P.F. Chang's and the food is more authenic. But the prices were pretty decent for such a nice place. Plus I'm sure there isn't MSG in the food because I didn't feel tired after lunch like I normally do in other Chinese restaurants.

I really like the Uncle Yu's in Lafayette, so when I drove by and saw that there was a location close to home, I got all excited. It is pretty rare that I get a hankering for Chinese food, but last night, after my best friend had to cancel dinner plans, I told my guy I wanted to go out to dinner with him. This is where we decided upon after realizing that the entire time we have been together, we have NEVER eaten Chinese food together. My daughter of course went with, and here is why we are giving this a 4 star instead of star review: Atmosphere:more upscale than one would think given the strip mall like outside. Lots and lots of waiters, bussers, etc. LOUD. Nicely decorated and comfortable. Service:good,but not great. This might be due to a HUGE party in the private room. It seemed to take a really, really long time between courses. Food: Appetizers: Just like the Lafayette location, some of the best potstickers I have had. We also ordered goat cheese wontons (4) which were very sweet and more like a dessert. I had expected goat cheese in wonton, not smeared on top of the wonton. Disappointing and I won't order these again. Soup: I had the hot and sour soup. My guy had the sizzling rice soup. Both were good. Main: Crispy Chicken-yummy. Just enough heat, but not too much for my heat sensitive guy. House special chowmein. My daughter loves noodles (well pasta of any kind), and seafood, so this was a perfect choice for her. Unlike most places, Uncle Yu's chowmein is not greasy, not gross, but nice and fresh and clean tasting. Prawns with snow peas. Light and fresh and again, clean tasting. I would come back here next time I have a hankering. So glad it is so close to home as well!

There is a lot of variety, with the portion of the dishes being adequate and the taste is very good, different from the regular Chinese. I had a pork dish using takeout taxi. The pork was microscopic. Maybe they cheat their TOT customers knowing they won't complain as the portion size is not the delivery driver's fault. Uncle Yu's leaves me in a conundrum. I've read other reviews and all I can say that anyone who calls this the "best Chinese restaurant" or the worse for that matter, has never eaten in a genuine Chinese restaurant of any stripe or color. Some say the food is too greasy, or too spicy or too bland. I would tell them that Chinese food encompasses much more than Chow Mein, and Peking Spareribs. Genuine Chinese food can often taste "greasy" or "tasteless" to a "westerner." Too me or anyone who eats Chinese food regularly Uncle Yu's is what, I would call, basic white-people food that would suit a palate from Kansas. It is very bland but does have some adequate things on their expansive menu (the things that have pictures of little chili peppers next to them). I use the word "adequate" deliberately. They are flavorful enough to satisfy me somewhat even if they're actually only mildly spicy. Some say you can tell loads about a Chinese restaurant by looking at the clientele. The clientele here looked like a Sons of Norway Anniversary dinner. Even the one Asian family there was speaking English to each other without the hint of an accent. The next thing I look for is the table setting and the decor. Uncle Yu's did not even have chopsticks so we had to ask for them and they were those takeout cheapo ones -- a bad sign for someone that likes Chinese food. The decor was not Chinese, not even a little. First entrees were the soup and genuine American fried won-tons. It looked and tasted Americanized. The soup was served in single servings "American Style" as if it was something you'd get in Bancheros -- not Chinese style ladled from a big bowl. That also was not a good sign. Then came the wait. The service could be excruciatingly slow at times. Although they kept refilling our water glasses they did not bring another thing out until everyone was totally finished sipping the soup (some in our group were super slow) and we had finished each and every single crumb of the fried won-tons. We were starving. When the main courses came, they seemed to come all at once. It was 100% American style food for American palates. Stuff you'd get in Minnesota's "Mall of the Americas" food court. The Peking spareribs and asparagus-beef (tasted OK). Next came the calamari and fish fillet (a little better) with mixed vegetables. The garlic eggplant (one that had a picture of a little chili in the menu) was the best but they used minimal garlic. I will say that it is the only "Chinese" restaurant I've ever been in that has a wine list combined with the decor of a suburban Italian restaurant. That is symptomatic of the problem. It caters to white suburbia faux Chinese. If you've never had genuine Chinese food before or you're in the neighborhood and have a craving for fake Chow Mein, it's not the worse. However, if you want good tasting and genuine Chinese Food and can use chopsticks go somewhere else.

I've heard that this was THE BEST place for chinese food-I had to figure it out for myself. I was taken there for my birthday lunch. It was very clean and open. The service was always right on top of everything. The special that was absolutely to die for was "goat cheese wonton w/carmelized apple". I could've probably forgotten about the rest of the mean and just ate those! The other dishes we shared were the schzewan beef and the orange chicken w/ fried rice and chow mein. I personally would've preferred the beef to be a bit more spicy but it wasn't lacking in flavor. FANCIEST CHINESE FOOD RESTAURANT IN A STRIP MALL EVER My buddy and I have been checking out Chinese food restaurants in the area so we decided to check out the The Uncle. We walked up to the place and we were surprised when a gentlemen in a tuxedo greeted us at the door. We looked around and thought what is a place like this doing in a sleepy little strip mall. We felt a little under dressed in t-shit and jeans as most people were dressed a little nicer. We sat down and I was shocked that they have a 15-20 page wine list. It was very well put together and I have seen nicer restaurants with lesser lists The price for the food seemed pretty reasonable for the image they were going for. We ordered our usually order and the food came out really quick. Break Down of the Meal Crab Puff Appetizer - I thought these were terrible. Too much cream cheese and the crab was non existent. Generals Chicken - Sauce was excellent. Good flavor with a little bit of heat to it. Would have been nice if the chicken was fried. What can I say, I like fried food. Honey Walnut Prawns - Pretty good. They weren't anything spectacular but I couldn't think of one negative thing. Pork Chow Mein - Kind of tasted like Panda Express. Don't get me wrong I love Panda but I was looking for something better. They did however have snap peas in the chow mein which I absolutely love. Overall I think the best part of Uncle Yu's is their service. Very friendly and quick with the water refill. I drink a ton of water and I hate asking for refills.

Unfortunately this was the worst experience we've ever had at Uncle Yu's. We have been going to this restaurant for over 10 years, as well as ordering Take Out. We have never had a bad experience...in fact just the opposite. Tonight, the service was extremely slow and they completely got our order wrong. The only person who seemed to be concerned with this problem was the hostess. She showed genuine concern and tried to correct the multiple mistakes, however, everyone else - the three different waiters along with the kitchen staff, never apologized or tried to correct what they kept getting wrong. We waited almost an hour and a half for the correct appetizers and then even longer for our correct dinner order. Sadly, I don't think we will go back to this restaurant for a very long time. They did take 20 percent off of our final order and did not charge us for one of the items. It was still a very high bill. Overall, their food is still very good, but service is very poor at this time.

Ordered food tonight for delivery and food was mediocre, but delivery fee a farce. They charged $10 to go 3.22 miles and when my husband called they said that anything over 8 minutes is $10. Well I map quested the route and it is 6 min. Will not patronize Uncle Yu's again.

The prices are high, yes; however, this isn't your typical Chinese food restaurant. This is more upscale, gourmet Chinese food. And, very delicious. Of course, we didn't know any of this when we decided to try Uncle Yu's. We just happened to be walking by, and the ambiance caught our eye. And, it is very nice inside...which we weren't expecting (me in a T-shirt and baseball cap). The lighting was impressive, soft & flattering; it was decorated nice inside too. I really liked just being in there. The menu, if I remember correctly, had fewer options than your typical Chinese food restaurant. But, I took this to mean (correctly so) that they focused on perfecting the dishes they did offer instead of having a million thrown-together dishes. My girlfriend is vegetarian, so we ordered a few things off of the appetizer menu that we would both be happy with...well, mostly. I ordered a prawn appetizer (all for me) that was also very good. But, we split some salad that had honey walnuts and poached pears in it with a medley of greens. It was expertly prepared! Very delicious! There was plenty for two people too...maybe three. The best of the night though, and what pushed this place up to 5 stars: the eggplant appetizer! I don't know how to explain it without oversimplifying; it deserves a better description, but it was sort of: light & crispy battered, not greasy, melt-in-your mouth, sweet, but not overly-sweet delicious. Just go try it. I know we haven't stopped talking about it since we've had it. Overall, this isn't the place you grab some quick pork fried rice and sweet & sour chicken to go. This is a nice, sit down establishment with a higher-end offering of Chinese food. And I loved it!

While staying in the area for a few days, we had a desire for a change from the routine (i.e. cafeteria). After reading other reviews on yelp, I was excited to hear about the "duck" spring rolls. We called to find out if they were available, and we were told that they were. Unfortunately, once we arrived to order, we were told that they were out of the duck rolls. Argh! Minus a star for that. We ordered hot and sour soup and rice. Not very hot nor very sour. But there was an abundance of veggies and mushrooms. I really liked everything about the soup except the blandness of the broth. The rice was very good. Perfectly steamed and great texture. Plus a star because of the rice.

This was the first place we had dinner when we moved to Danville....literally the day we got here after driving for 2 weeks from Boston. We got takeout here on the recommendation of our landlord. We were sorely disappointed. This might be the worst Chinese food we've ever had. I got the sweet and sour chicken and it seemed like every piece I bit into was all fat. For those with gluten allergies like me, dining out for Chinese food can be a crapshoot. Since I discovered my allergy about 1.5 years ago, I've eaten Chinese only once, and while they made my food gluten free, they didn't make it very appetizing. Not so with Uncle Yu's! Yesterday my wife was in the mood for chicken noodle soup, so I suggested Uncle Yu's, recalling the days of yore when I could actually eat there. They have a great noodle soup. After she agreed, I then realized I may be in trouble. Since we were doing take out, I decided to call in advance to see if I could see if I could explain the challenges of my diet, etc. Not only did the woman who answered the phone know what gluten was, she also had menu suggestions for me and told me what items they could make gluten free (and there were many). I ordered the chow fun (with chicken) and the chicken and corn soup (it was cold and rainy out), both gluten free; and gluten-filled noodle soup with chicken for my wife. The food was ready to go when they said and was a good value for the amount of food we got. Uncle Yu's isn't cheap, but I've always found the food and service worth the price. I've eaten there about a dozen times over the years. Very good service, linen and china settings, generally very good food. I was surprised to see "Gluten Free" stickers on the food that I had ordered that way - giving me even more confidence that they took my issue seriously. The chicken chow fun was outstanding. Great flavor and the chicken was lean with no fat/gristle. It appeared to be white meat. It was a little oily, but I think that is pretty much par for the course for chow fun. I put a little red pepper and wheat free soy sauce on it at home and really enjoyed it. The corn and chicken soup was good, not great. Perhaps more due to my taste than the soup itself, it was a little bland. My wife's noodle soup was very good as well, and far more than she could eat in one sitting. Uncle Yu's is a great place for chinese food (4 - 5 star) and for those with gluten allergies craving chinese, you couldn't do better.

I've been eating at Uncle Yu's since before they opened their San Ramon location. I love their food, I love that's it's not greasy. Their shrimp fried rice, won ton soup, pot stickers are my favorite. All of their food is so good it's hard to decide what to order when I go there. I love having their food delivered. They have never once made a mistake on the delivery and they are incredibly fast in getting the food to me. LOVE THIS place!!!

Meh. Is right. I'm tired of eating here. This is a standard to sub standard American Chinese food place. But I keep coming back again and again because my family always wants to eat here for Birthday parties. I would rather go to China Wall in Dublin for a buffet dinner. I think you get better food on the buffet tray over in Dublin than you do getting served at this place. Also the Restaurant looks all high end inside, so you know your going to end up paying a pretty penny for your meal. The service the last couple times we have gone was friendly though. So this rating is actually for 2 1/2 stars. I would of maybe given three stars but my stomach is so tired of their over processed food I just can't. I was in San Ramon last night and a friend and I stopped in here. The decor is pretty awful, but the food is good. Unlike most Chinese restaurants, the dishes were served in a deconstructed style, meaning the components are separated on the dish. We had the General Tso's chicken (excellent, but I didn't think there was enough broccoli. They arranged it in a flower-like formation, so they were really limiting themselves in that way), the honey-walnut prawns (very grainy texture and I thought the deconstructed style of having a pile of walnuts across from a pile of prawns worked against it), and the beef chow fun (really, really meaty). If I were to go back, I'd probably stick with the General Tso's chicken.

I'm from So.Cal so this might be bias. And I understand it's not Chinatown around this part of the Bay area but I still expect a certain quality and variety from a Chinese restaurant. This place borderlines an American style type of place because their lunch menus are selective to certain combos and not the typical family style. In a real Chinese restaurant, you have a wide array of choices and it's meant for family style. They bring you white rice and there is no combo of rice and entree all in one plate served. Where's the free hot tea?? Sorry I've been to many other Chinese restaurants that have better quality, more choices and variety, and "hella" cheap. I think the Chinese restaurants here in the Bay area such as Uncle Yu's need to take a step back and really get into the core of Chinese cooking and not worry about catering it to the American style of thinking with combos and stuff. Just make it good 'ol fashion Chinese food where you pick and choose a variety of food and serve it quick and cheap. Don't forget the unlimited free rice and hot tea and soup on the side. On a side note, they did have a bar. I rarely see that in a Chinese restaurant.

I was disappointed with my last visit to Uncle Yu's. The service was terrible (very slow) and our waiter was clearly on overload. We sat at our table almost 15 minutes before we finally flagged down a bus boy to grab our server. It was just after 7:00pm on a Friday night. We ordered the Honey Walnut Prawns and asked about some Singapore noodle dish that sounded fantastic. We asked if it was good and if it was really spicy (there was a pepper next to it on the menu indicating that it was).....we told him we wanted a good, spicy dish to go with our Honey Walnut Prawns. He seemed agitated that we asked and told us to order the noodles and to send them back if we didn't like them. He was no help at all. The Honey Walnut Prawns were fabulous......the noodle dish was mediocre at best and not even remotely spicy. I have also ordered take out and the food is hit or miss. Some items are awesome and some are a huge disappointment. I have two other places I would rather go to before coming back to Uncle Yu's.

I've been eating at this place off and on since I lived in San Ramon about 3 years ago and it has always stayed consistently good. I've only eaten in about 2 or 3 times, but all experiences were equally pleasurable. They will make you special items not on the menu (i.e. sesame beef) and it is always AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! :D

Based on the reviews online, we just went there for my sister's birthday party this evening. The environment is great and clean. The taste is also good. But the food is not authentic Chinese. They are Americanized Chinese food.

We have always gone to Unce Yu's when making the trip out to San Ramon to visit our kids Great-Grandmother (its her favorite). We always order the same itemsl: Rainbow Chicken for our appitizer, Pork Chow Main (Hong Kong style), Lemon Chicken, Beef & Broccoli, Honey Walnut Prawns and Pork Fried Rice......Eveything is so delicious!!! Never have we gone for lunch so it does get pretty pricey, but so worth every bite!!!

A restaurant that has linen cloths does not automatically equate it as fine dining. Food is overpriced. And it's nothing to rave about. Staff is cold. They try to get you out of the restaurant as soon as possible. If you're looking for Asian cuisine in San Ramon, Yang's is definitely better.

Took my husband for a "Something different before Thanksgiving" kind of dinner the night before the big day. We had the spinach and chicken dumplings very light and tasty app., also shared the mushu chicken with the plum sauce one of my favorites. For dinner we had a Fried chicken with a light spicy sauce and Some kind of spice prawns in a sauce that looked just like the chicken when they came to the table! But both dishes were tender, sweet and delicious. Plus we ordered the Singapore noodle that have a hint of curry and an angel hair style noodle (minus the pork for me, because I don't eat pork or beef) and they were really a nice change from fried rice or chow mein. Of course for two this ended up being a ridiculous amount of food, and we ended up having to take some home, which they happily wrapped up. Even the paper bag was folded and tucked in a way like "origami"...nice touch. The service was very attentive, even being that it was a busy evening. All the staff is very friendly on both my visits and the food choices have all been great so I'd highly recommend this spot.

If we're close to another Uncle Yu's in a seperate east bay location, we'll glady go there because we know we can rely on the name. It's even great for a pick up order for lunch. We were invited here by some friends. This was our first time visiting Uncle Yu's. The atmosphere was very nice. The restaurant was very clean. We started off our meal with egg rolls, pot stickers and steamed dumplings. The egg rolls were very fresh and crisp. The pot stickers were amazing and the steamed dumplings were outstanding. For the main course we ordered the honey walnut prawns, sweet and sour chicken, rainbow platter, fried rice, kung pao and broccoli beef. You have to get the honey walnut shrimp - it is the best. The broccoli beef was so tender that you could cut it with a fork. It was all very good. They brought out some lychee at the end which was a nice refreshing end to the meal.

I have always loved this restaurant - but not anymore! We took ten people there on a Saturday night and should have know something waswrong when there were no people waiting outside, no take-out ready to go and worse - over half the restaurant was empty at 6PM!!!!When thery bought the food out I was almost imbarassed because the portions were only big enough for four, certainly not ten! Six prawns for 10 people??? It got worse from there - the baby lobster tails had a pile of SHELLS and only 4 tails could be found. We paid our hefty bill and at 7:45 we left and only four tables were occupied. No thanks - never again

Uncle Yu's is what you would say is fine dining in the Chinese dining category. Dinners are also very good. A little pricey but this is San Ramon. We had lunch here for the first time at the recommendation of some co-workers. Located in a non-descript strip mall (by Max's Diner in San Ramon), it was fairly average service, ambiance, and food. They had fountain sodas on the plus side. The lunch special consisted of a hot and sour soup, choice of side (white rice, pork fried rice, and chow mein noodles) and an entree. The hot and sour soup was fairly good and had substance to it (i.e a decent amount of ingredients that lended to the flavor). I had Mongolian beef with chow mein noodles. There weren't the greatest, but were tasty and was somewhat actually "spicy" as most Mongolian beef isn't spicy whatsoever. I noticed that the quantity of noodles was much smaller than the other lunches that opted for rice. I noticed all three of our meals were lacking in meat, and yet abundant in vegetables. Suprisingly, the menu had only a fair selection. The price for lunch was around $13, including tip. While a little high, it's on par with places in the area. The service was,relatively, the high point as they were very attentive to the table, almost to a fault (they tried 3 times to take my co-worker's plate / soup bowl away and it felt a bit like they were trying to rush us out). One time he actually just took the plate without asking. We could have definitely done without the rushed feeling we had. Basically, a decent meal, but not really a compelling reason to return.

Very good service, tasty food but small portions. Parking lot a little small, can be hard to find a spot. Tight parking spaces, good place to get a ding on your car door. An upscale Chinese restaurant where presentation is more important then quantity. Good place to go if you want to impress someone or to go for a business lunch, otherwise I would not go here. Nice room in the back for a semi-private party, big enough for about 10 or 15 people. Food is not too bad here, but not any better than most other Chinese restaurants.

Excellent wine list with a top flight bar, and superior table service. The restaurant is well appointed with a pleasant atmosphere fro a strip mall. However, the food was average. We had the lobster Shu Mai, the Calamari and the Duck spring rolls. All of these dishes were beautifully presented, but the lacked any distinctive or memorable flavors. If you want the full gourmet Chinese dining experience with atmosphere and flavors, go to Chu on College Ave. in Oakland.

If you can't make it into The City of real Chinese, Uncle Yu's is a good suburban bet. Way better than PF Changs, just don' t get the PF Changs attraction. Lunch specials are great, hot-n-sour soup way above average. Dinner can be a bit pricey, but specials, think short ribs or scallops (again not that Chinese) are very good. Wine list rivals some of the other better San Ramon Valley restaurants. Anything by Navarro in Mendocino actually works with Asian food Service is very accommodating and white table cloth is nice touch for strip mall. I sometimes feel under dressed with the waiters in their black coats and white shirts.

Was pleasantly surprised at how upscale this restaurant is, considering it's located in a strip mall in the middle of suburbia. The storefront looked fairly tiny, but when you enter, there's a sizable seating area off to the right. The waiters were formally dressed and very attentive. We all had the luncheon specials (average price $8.50) which included soup, entree, side of veggies, and a choice of brown rice, pork fried rice, or vegetable chow mein. The food was promptly served, well prepared, and flavorful. Will definitely be going back to try out additional dishes.

A good experience. Food was great. We went to lunch as part of the Gourmet East Bay week -- $15 for a three-course lunch. This is one of the less expensive restaurants on the list, but it was still worth it, we felt. The appetizer was this tasty salad with a side of goat cheese wonton and a crispy prawn. Very, very good all around. There were two entrees to choose from (short ribs and salmon). I got the salmon, which came with black bean sauce, asparagus and broccoli. The salmon was lightly breaded into little chunks (typical looking Chinese food style) but so good. I've never had salmon with Chinese food. Dessert was probably the least exciting part -- choice of vanilla, green tea or mango ice cream. But it was fine. Service was attentive all around until my boyfriend actually needed something -- more rice and a refill on soda. But when we got the bill we realized why they didn't rush to refill his drink -- they charged him for two. Lame. I know places do that, but I hate it. The glass was so tiny too, totally unfair. But that's really the only complaint. The inside is upscale but casual dress seemed OK (I made my bf trade his logo T-shirt for a polo and flip-flops for closed-toed shoes though, heh). The decor definitely falls into my "soap opera" restaurant category. If you've watched soap operas, you know what I mean.

Great upscale food... bad location. It was a nice surprise to find such great service and food in a strip mall located between a Baskin Robins and Tully's. Must Orders: Mu Shu Chicken Crab Wontons Honey Walnut Shrimp There are two locations, the other is in downtown Livermore. Livermore has a much nicer location and interior, but when it comes to food, service, and overall experience the San Ramon location is the better of the two.

I've been a regular since mid 1990s. Having learned Chinese food in SF, am always skeptical of suburban places and still have not found any others that I would recommend. I am happy to have business lunches there since it is quiet enough to have a conversation, everyone loves whatever they order and it is elegant without being too fancy. I am equally happy to have the family there, where I feel kids are welcome and we can each order our own favorite which of course is shared by all. Never had anything I did not like, but am pretty consistent with my personal favorite-- BBQ Pork Chow Fun. We love the pot stickers (order early), lemon chicken and prawn dishes. Recently we visited another UY in Livermore for first time which was nice but all in all the San Ramon location is still my fav.

Went here for the first time for lunch. They some good lunch specials going and I ended up getting the lamb schezwan. Very tasteful dish and it came with hot and sour soup, vegetables, and choice of chow mein or rice. I ended up opting for double vegetables for my sake but nonetheless there's plenty of good options in this place. The presentation of the food was good and the waiter did a good job in getting our order and having our food ready in a good turnaround. I'll try to come back again and try different dishes.

Continuing my trek in this foreign land of San Ramon, Uncle Yu's is probably my #2 asian comfort food spot behind Yanagi Too. First impressions is that this restaurant is extremely clean, and appears even more spacious with smart placement of mirrors and decor. The waiters in black suits are all very polite and courteous, and the whole place just feels classy. For your average working class joe, I'd say this place is a lot more bang for your buck for lunch, for dinner it can get a bit expensive. Thankfully their lunch menu is fairly extensive and anyone can find something that they like. For me that's the Kung Pow Three Combo. I'm torn sometimes between trying to order in my broken Chinglish(Gong bau san combo) or in English which makes me feel like a failure ("uh, Kung Pow Three combo please?" :shameful look:). Either way that dish is a beautiful harmony between Chinese and American cooking. Some hole in the wall "authentic" Chinese place would make this dish so overwhelming chicken and grease heavy that no amount of tea could stave off the aftertaste of oil and creeping food coma. Some American cafeteria would butcher the rice (too dry, wrong kind), chicken (it's called, a wok), pepper (sorry, crushed red peppers doesn't count), and sauce. Instead you get this beautiful looking plate of 1/3 Chicken/peppers/nuts in this beautiful sauce, 1/3 steaming white rice, and 1/3 snowpeas and broccoli. While I wouldn't recommend a diet based on this meal, it's a very complete meal and doesn't leave me feeling icky or that I didn't even enough rice, chicken, or veggies. I'd say that "just right" combination of Chinese tastes + American health consciousness (like steaming veggies or using less oil) is a good representation of most of their lunch dishes. 4 stars for good food, a little overpriced, but just about right for lunch. For dinner I'd recommend the General Tsou's chicken (that is some tasty sauce), but be prepared to spend a little more.

Nice restaurant, good service, and the food's good or very good across the board (except their potstickers aren't particularly exciting - a 2 at best). Lunch specials are a good deal BUT be warned that you will be charged full price for a soft drink refill. 5 cents of syrup and carbonated water from the fountain for them, and an extra 2 bucks for you. Hate that. The service at lunch is actually a bit too fast - they turn the tables quick so there's little wait, but they don't rush you once you're in...but I really don't need my meal in 3 minutes or less, unless I ask, thanks.

We love coming here! It is definitely our favorite Chinese food restaurant in the area. The service is excellent and the food is delicious. My wife and I come here all the time, and I assume our relative youth compared to their other regulars makes us stand out, so it's nice to be remembered every time we stop in. Ming is particularly helpful and friendly, as are the rest of the staff. While the lunch specials are tasty, our favorite time to come is during dinner, and our typical meal consists of the following: *Potstickers to start off (delicious) *Sizzling Rice Soup (although their Won Ton Soup is great as well) *Mu Shu Pork *Honey Walnut Prawns *Mandarin Triple Crown or Mongolian Beef Other favorites are the Crispy Chicken and Beef with Broccoli, but I'm sure you can't go wrong with anything else you try. The food always tastes fresh, and I don't think it's possible for you to drink half of your ice water without them refilling it - very on point. It's also a comfortable restaurant to eat in. *One tip: four glasses of the same wine tend to cost less than the bottle, and by the time you order a couple glasses, they usually give you a bit more than the first.* We will be coming back as long as Uncle Yu keeps up the good work!

It's a little pricy, taste light in msg BUT THE FRIED RICE is the LOUSIEST - CHEAP- TASTING -- they must have used the CalRose instead of Jasmine rice, overcooked, the grains were smashed, it was like you ordered it from a small fast food "hole- in -the wall" Chinese restaurant. Classy restaurant with Chinese-like food. Caters to the business crowd that works in the cubicle farms at Bishop Ranch. My dept. has been here several times by now. It would also work as a date place. It doesn't seem like the kind of place to go if you want real, authentic Chinese, though. More like, "let's take this cuisine and gussy it up a bit." Not my style. Considering that I'm fine with Concord's China Wall, my reaction is not surprising. The food is pretty good, though. The usual suspects: shrimp, chicken, beef, pork, tofu, cooked vegetables. We had a retirement party for one of our colleagues yesterday, and Uncle Yu loaded the table with all-of-the-above, and I loaded my plate with the lo mein & meat and stuffed myself. Oooooh yeah . . . It works for what it is. I think my hunny could take it or leave it, I'd rather leave it, and my girl would rather go to In-n-Out (actually, I would rather do In-n-Out too). So I'll leave my Uncle Yu visits to work lunches, and enjoy it when I do go here.

My love and I were starving after a day shopping in SF so once we got back into town, we decided to get Chinese. Since we usually go to Yi Ping, we decided to try something new for fun and were happy and pleasantly surprised by the food here. Firstly, I had no idea that the restaurant was as vast as it actually is since it's kinda hiding in the corner but the decor inside is gilded and welcoming, with a full bar and somewhat old school-Vegas feel. I love the booths! We ordered a bunch of things and were happy with everything. I just wish the calamari appetizer had more of the whole bodies, my favorite! The sauce was really good, however. Our entrees were tasty; the menu actually reminds me a lot of Yi Ping, which is always good since I like their food so much. Will be back when I need some fried, spicy goodness!

When it comes to Chinese food, this place embodies my "best of both worlds" - your standard Americanized Chinese dishes (that everyone secretly or openly craves) and the real stuff that my Chinese friends would agree is recognizable as something their mothers would cook - and both cooked equally skillfully. Lunch specials are extensive in options and generous in portions, and I appreciated that Uncle Yu's pays special attention to healthy cooking. Even at the busy weekday hour of 1pm, our 5 dishes came out fast, accompanied by the quiet, swift, and non-judgmental service that is unique to Asian waiters. Something I wish I knew before coming was how relatively fancy this place is. I'd play safe dressing up a little for Uncle Yu's.

My food (fish in black bean sauce) was serviceable, although drenched in a sticky-sweet generic but gluten-free brown sauce My manger didn't fare nearly as well as I did. This was his first trip to San Francisco in around 20 years and we had to skip our planned dinner in Fisherman's Wharf. I don't think that we'll be eating here again soon.

I have been to both the San Ramon and Livermore locations several times and the food is consistently great. The San Ramon location is bright and pretty traditional Chinese decor. It can get noisy when it's crowded. I especially like the honey walnut prawns and the hot and sour soup. If you want a more intimate setting, try the Livermore location.

The Sleeping Giant Awakens in the East Bay. Being from the Midwest you really appreciate West Coast Chinese Food as it really is a step up from what we get in the Midwest. Uncle Yu's is the epitome of this axiom. The food the decor and the service are all classic and excellently executed. I've eaten at a number of Chinese restaurants in downtown San Francisco and this place puts them all to shame. Next time I'm within a 2 hour drive I'm coming here. For the record I had Kung Pao but based on the variety of orders I tasted and/or witnessed at my table EVERYTHING was excellent. This is how Chinese food should be done. The soups, sauces, seafood, vegetables etc. are all sublime, delicious, fresh and cooked to perfection. Now I know why it's so expensive to live in the Bay Area. They got Uncle Yu's.

Best Chinese you will find locally. Good ambience and great food (if you know what you are ordering). Favorites are honey walnut shrimp prawn salad, Peking duck, Singapore noodles and salt and pepper calamari! Good service especially if Ming is your server.

Just terrible!! The worst Chinese food I've ever eaten! We had 5 people for lunch, and most had one of the lunch specials, green beans, chicken with vegetables, eggplant, etc. Everything was overcooked and completely tasteless, as if there was no seasoning added & just blobs of mush in your mouth. In addition, we ordered the cheese/crab wontons which were cold & hard, sent them back, but basically got the same thing back, just a tad warmer. Wow, c'mon, Chinese food at the mall is much better! The price was rather high, 10-15 dollars, and service was perfunctory & indifferent. Can't understand why anyone eats here.

Uncle Yu's is a family staple. We go here whenever we get chinese food and they are open. Every item on the menu is great. Cant go wrong with any of the chicken dishes (and trust me, I have tried them all at least three or four times each). It is a go to for birthday dinners and holidays. Can't go wrong with any of their other locations as well.

This review isn't for the food, prices, or ambience but for the unsanitary conditions Uncle Yu's stores their food. What do I mean? I worked in 2005 Crow Canyon Place for over two years (when Petco was Crown Books). Part of my job was to throw away trash and recycle cardboard boxes. The dumpsters for these are located behind the plaza, out of the public's eyes. You have to walk behind the back door of every restaurant/store in that plaza. You might see where this is going: Whenever I would throw out the trash, I noticed that Uncle Yu's regularly stores its meat and vegetables by these dumpsters, in open air (sometimes chilled on ice; probably defrosting their food but then why keep the vegetables there?). Other than the disgusting smell from the dumpsters, there are also several rat traps all over the back area (though I've never personally seen a rat) and the cooks are usually back there smoking. Honestly, it's gross. I don't care if you guys enjoy a smoke behind the restaurant by the rat traps and dumpsters, just don't defrost your food back there

We were a group of 15, who were having a farewell get together for a friend after a round of golf at nearby San Ramon Golf Club. We were pretty impressed about the decor of this restaurant. Nothing cheesy about this place, just a pure class. We also quickly noticed that majority of the customers were non-Asian. Bad sign, perhaps? Not at all! We had a prix-fix menu; two appetizers, soup, five generous main dishes plus some fried rice. Sorry, I fail to note all the names of the dishes, but all of the different kinds were served (veggie, pork, beef, seafood, and chicken dishes). The meals were amazing, and so was the service. And how was the damage financially? It was just $20 plus tax and gratuity. What a great deal! To top it off, this place has amazing selections of wine. I have yet to see a Chinese restaurant with this extensive wine list. And yes, we truly enjoyed the 2004 Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon :-)

Our family went in for a late dinner, and we all ordered from the gluten-free menu. Their servers were very friendly and helpful at letting us know our options. We ordered a number of dishes family style including the walnut prawns, stir-fried scallops, fried rice and noodles. The dishes were tasty, pretty similar to PF Chang's style. An area for improvement would be for more variety on the gluten-free menu- it's already awesome that they offer it at all but the majority of it was just the same dish but with a different protein listed each time. So it looks like a lot of choices but really wasn't.

Grouchy staff, pricier food than most chinese restaurants and slooow service. We went there last night. Our orange chicken tasted like it sat out for 10 minutes before arriving at our table. I also don't like how they won't give you a booth. They always claim their reserved.

I went here with a large group and the service was excellent. They staff is courteous, the drinks were always full, and the food arrived very quickly despite the lunchtime rush. The lunch specials are a great deal! Lunch specials included a small soup and an entrÃ©e with vegetables and rice for under $10. I split the eggplant and Szechwan prawns with my friend. Both were delicious (although the Szechwan was not spicy) and a perfect portion.

The food here is great! The first time we came here the food was wonderful but I guess a new chef can change everything.The atmosphere and decor was wonderful, very classy! My favorites were General Tsou's chicken and the prawns. To sum it up this is a good place to eat for special occasions, dinner and just to get a bite to eat.

LOL! The ones that give it below 2 stars, are the true "ethnic" folks that know what real chinese food is all about. I'll give this restaurant an extra star because of their staff and ambiance. The restaurant is clean, modern, and polished. The staff is very nice and accomodating. But if I were to only rate their food, it really deserves 1 1/2 stars. SOOOO Americanized. This is NOTHING close to authentic chinese food. Even the simplest dish, chow mein, can taste soo bland. Panda Express has alot more flavor and is alot cheaper. It's true - you won't see a lot of Chinese folks in there...that's telling alot.

I came here for dinner with my family one evening while visiting my brother and sister-in-law in San Ramon. This place reminds me of P.F Chang's - non authentic Chinese food. Um, nothing here is good. Although, there is one dish that I felt tasted okay which is the Peking Spareribs. I'm not familiar with the area so I'm not sure if this is the only Chinese restaurant in the city of San Ramon. The restaurant is rather upscale with white tablecloths along with a calming and quiet ambiance. Definitely not your typical 'loud' Chinese restaurant. I would recommend you to pay a visit to Panda Express for the same quality of food but for half the price.

Super delicious and really reasonably priced :) atmosphere was really wonderful here. Crispy fried eggplant and honey walnut prawns were mouthwatering.. They actually have some pretty yummy cocktails as well especially the lychee one, so good! Definitely worth a try :)

We usually go here for birthdays or special occasions and the food never disappoints. They serve family style, and the portions are pretty big. The service is pretty quick and the staff is friendly. They get really busy friday and Saturday nights so booking a reservation in advance will be beneficial.

Stopped in for lunch and was greeted by the nicest server. I can't remember his name, but he sat us immediately. The lunch specials were mostly under $10, and well worth the money! This food is delicious!! The portion was enough to be completely FULL!! Our order came out quickly, and each person that worked there asked if we needed anything additional. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!! The restaurant has a bit of an upscale feel, but casual dress is ok too! I've always heard about Uncle Yu's when I was a Bay Area resident, but never had the chance until a recent visit. Highly recommend the spicy shrimp chef special and the orange chicken! The ingredients were fresh, and the chow mein that came with the dish was fantastic! The noodles were the right texture, and had wonderful flavor!!!

I definitely like the ambiance. We came in during an hour lunch break and was sat immediately. We had excellent timing because the restaurant packed up quickly. It was about 8 minutes and still we had no server to take our order, I had to wave to a server passing by to place our order before our lunch opportunity was up. My friend ordered the yu shiang pork luncheon special (3) and I had the Szechuan lamb luncheon special- a definite (5). The lamb was very nicely prepared and the garlic sauce was tasty. I would not have minded if it were a little spicier. My friend's Yu Shiang pork though- was not a particularly enticing entree. The sauce was too 'tangy' and lingered.

I am giving this place a 2-star rating due to my previous experience which had been good. The first time we found this place we thought it to be super fresh, vegetables were bright, food had lot of unique flavors...we thought it to be one of the better Chinese places we have been to. OUr second time was for dinner, much pricier, still the wait staff was friendly-food good. Then comes last night for take-out. We ordered Lemon Chicken, Egg Rolls, Chow Mein, and Wor - Wonton Soup. The Soup lack flavor-like ingredients just tossed in unflavored broth or water?? At one point, I had to spit out a wonton, because I nearly cracked a tooth on a piece of bone that must have been mixed in with the meat (like a 1/2 inch piece of BONE!!!!) Yuck...the Lemon Chicken was over-cooked, or maybe from a previous day or frozen ahead of time-couldn't bit into it, too tough, as well, there was no lemony flavor to the sauce/dish. Really disappointed. Going to dinner with a family of 6 or spending money on take-out is a treat, last night it was not. Sadly, we won't be returning any time soon.

(this review is for DELIVERY only) Attempted ordering food for delivery from Uncle Yu's in San Ramon, and to our shock & dismay ~ they have a "$40.00 minimum" for delivery, PLUS they ADD a $10.00 "Delivery Fee"?! (we are a mile away or less), and that's not even including the driver's tip $ on top of all that?! (not sure if they charge tax on top of that)... Wow - no thanks. They just lost a delivery customer. : (

I visited again during lunch with a coworker a couple years later and had the same reaction. I wouldn't care to go back unless someone else chooses to and pays for my lunch..lol

after seeing the movie, "general tsao's chicken", at the cameo theater in st. helena, i decided to try the dish, it;s made with broccoli and dark meat chicken, usually in a fried dumpling,crisp on the outside,soft inside. i usually avoid dark meat chicken dishes, not because i don't know it's more flavorful than white, but because in the past it's always associated with extra fat and tendons. not so in this case.it was fine without a covering of wheat flour because the dark meat was first quality. the only time i've ever seen that in a Chinese restaurant. it's our second time at this chain. the first was Lafayette. both places provided great service, but it's not a fast food place. such good food should be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. everyone else was satisfied with their meals too. this small chain has ruined me for Chinese food.now, everything else, like panda, for chains, is a bit lower in ratings, in price , of course, too.you seem to get what you pay for at this small chain. it seems that senior management is just that, and perhaps some family has something to do with that. very consistent food and service from one location to another. also, got 3 full meals for the price,because they are so generous with portions.

This is a solid Chinese restaurant and my family frequents it quite often. The restaurant is CLEAN and nice, it doesn't look like a typical Chinese restaurant. The food is flavorful and fresh, and the prices are pretty darn good (their lunch menu can't be beat). Sometimes I'll just get a quart of the won-ton soup to-go and it costs something like $6 and is an entire meal. The only negative thing I have to say is I don't think the food is superb. Sometimes, I wish it was a little greasier/more flavorful. It really is fresh tasting, etc., but sometimes I feel it lacks on flavor. (side note: I can't believe people say this place is greasy. It is soo far from it!) In any case, I know I will be back here. Is it the BEST Chinese food ever? Nah. But I do think it's the best in the area.

Although my wife and I have since moved from the area, for several years this restaurant afforded us one of the most pleasurable dining experiences we have ever enjoyed and we hope they will someday open a new location near Sacramento! High end, quality food. Prompt, courteous, and attentive (not intrusive) service, succulent fresh cuisine, and a great wine list. Our perennial favorite - the chef's crispy prawns with sauce on the side, broccoli and rice or chow mein. Broccoli cooked perfectly to just tender and the rice and chow mein delicately light and not heavy. Prawns? Superb! We liked it so much we held my wife's 50th birthday party in their banquet room for some two dozen guests, and, as always, the service was impeccable and the food delicious. The whole dining party raved about this restaurant! I also went there for several work-related group lunches, as it was the preferred venue for our nearby office staff. Atmosphere luxurious, but relaxing and comfortable, even when crowded (as is usually the case at lunch-time because of the devoted clientele). Very much miss dining at Uncle Yu's (please open a location in Sacramento)! :)

We've gone to Uncle Yu's for quite a long time, at least 5 years. Usually we pick up and bring dinner home...occasionally we'll eat in. The last time we picked up our order everything seemed like a 1/2 order, we usually order the 3 person meal for our family of 4 with left overs. Tonight though they lost our order, and rather than having us wait a bit to re-do our order, they told us that it would be 1 1/2 hours until we could pick up again. We won't be back. I wouldn't suggest calling ahead and ordering for you either.

This place was delicious! We were new to town and it was recommended by a college student. We weren't sure what to expect and were pleasantly surprised. I really enjoy eating at Uncle Yu's. They have a good selection of gluten-free dishes and a nice clean atmosphere. My favorite menu item is their gluten-free Chow Fun -- yummy. On my last visit, the service wasn't the best -- I ordered tea and it never arrived, even after prompting the waiter. The wait staff are always a bit stand-offish, not very friendly or inviting. The food is good though, and I always appreciate a restaurant that is progressive enough to offer a gluten-free menu.

The portions are huge and very good. I've only come for lunch but they have a good variety of different dishes: meat, seafood, vegetarian lunches all around $9. Comes with soup, veggies, and your choice of white or brown (extra $) rice, fried rice, or chow mein! They have vegetable soup for the vegetarians and hot & sour soup for the rest. I ordered the prawns and vegetable lunch special with hot & sour soup and chow mein. It was very good and huge. Because all lunches already come with veggies, I had a double serving. The prawns were fresh with some nice light sauce on top. The chow mein consists of the thicker noodles but I like how it's not oily. Also, the waiters are constantly going around refilling your drinks! Great environment, kind of feels like a fancier Chinese restaurant and there are areas for larger parties. Good overall and pretty decently priced!

One of my two favorite Chinese places in the Danville-San Ramon area. Lunch specials are especially good here. I've never been disappointed with the food. It's always very delicious. Kung Pao and Cashew Chicken are two highlights. I like the service here too - almost a throw back to how many nicer Chinese restaurants used to be with waiters in bow ties and fast, efficient service.

Chinese food is like Mexican food, you can go to 20 different restaurants, each having their own slightly modified menus. But at the end of the day it's all the same tasting grub. Then there is Uncle Yu's, I have nothing but great experiences here. What I really like about this place is that they don't smother the food in oils, they don't use MSG and most important........the food quality is a giant leap ahead of most Chinese food places. I've tried the Sweet & Sour Pork and Chicken as well as the Orange Chicken and they always use White meat which is nice and juicy, like I said before they clearly don't use tons of oil either. You can actually taste the food! Everything from the rice to the noodles and meat taste of great quality. Prices are very reasonable as well. I find that the lunch special is plenty of food, it includes rice or chow mein, Greens and a bowl of Hot & Sour soup. The restaurant is clean, staff is friendly and attentive. When I eat Chinese this is where I go. I have eaten and TONS of Chinese food places over the years and this is best I've found. Maybe it's the lack of MSG but I definitely don't feel hungry 30min later after eating here either.

By far, the worst service I've had in a very long time. We were seated, and waited 10 minutes before our server came by. Chicken chow mein was bland, Mongolian beef was spicy, but no flavor. We ordered hot tea and it never came. The waiter was rude. And we observed him picking up checks from seated tables and looking at the tip as he walked away. We certainly won't be returning, and wouldn't recommend to anyone...based on food and lousy service.

Wow! So happy to find a great Szechuan restaurant so close to home! Based on the recommendations, tried the soft duck spring rolls, hot and sour soup, mu shu pork, kung po chicken and general tsou's chicken. Such great flavors. All really good, though I especially enjoyed the general tsou's chicken with sliced garlic! Yum. The kung po chicken had just the right amount of heat and lots of fresh zucchini and pea pods. The service was prompt and attentive. Absolutely no complaints. I highly recommended Uncle Yu's if you're in the mood for some very flavorful Szechuan.

This is pretty average american-chinese food It's pretty much americanized, as I've heard from many friends. The food is ok, but it's "too" fancy for what it is, and way over-priced... expect ~$13 for a normal dish. The Singapore Noodles were pretty good though, I'd recommend those, however I'll stick with the Pearl Garden restaurant which is 1 minute walk away!

Easily the best Chinese restaurant in the valley. The service is great, the people are friendly and the food is super yummy. I just had lunch there with a business colleague and appreciated that there were items on the menu specifically for folks who are having a light lunch and don't want to get stuffed. I had the terriaki chicken and mango salad. Wow. If everything else on the menu was lousy I'd still come back for this dish - but the rest of the menu is great.

That's three and a half stars. I've been hearing about Uncle Yu's for years from a Lafayette-based former colleague but this is our first experience at one. After Tam's successful gallbladder surgery, Alan, Kevin and I went to Uncle Yu's for lunch as she'd instructed us pre-op. It's an attractive room that shows no hint of the strip mall it inhabits. Colors and fabrics are understated and attractive. Service is attentive. We shared an order of potstickers, They were good, but not as good as Yummy's. Alan ordered the Mandarin Triple Crown, which consisted of prawns, beef and chicken with assorted vegetables stir fried in a tasty light brown sauce. It came w/ a choice of white rice, fried rice or chow mein. Brown rice is 50Â¢ more and that's what he chose. Kevin and I ordered Crispy Chicken, chunks of chicken fried in batter and then glazed with a mildly spicy sauce. I ordered fried rice and Kevin opted for chow mein. Hot and sour soup was served first. All dishes were accompanied by broccoli, the crispy chicken w/ water chestnuts mixed in. I liked it and I liked the tastes I had of Alan's, shrimp, beef and chicken. It was a tasty lunch and I expect dinner would be even better.

Whoever owns Uncle Yu's is a smart businessman. Targeting the rich white marjorities in the tri-valley area and being at the center of business parks in San Ramon doesn't hurt them either. They serve Chinese food but it is Americanized Chinese food. Their food is just decent and non authentic. Their prices and decor make them high end, not there food.

My family and I have been frequenting Uncle Yu's for at least 10 years. The food here is great and the service is very attentive. Our favorite dishes are the spicy crispy chef's prawns and the garlic prawns. The chef's prawns are battered, crispy prawns in a slightly sweet and spicy sauce that has the texture of honey. Very delicious! The service here is very attentive and the restaurant is always clean. The only reason I took away one star is that the hosts in the front never smile. Not only do they not smile but they are also not very welcoming or friendly, which is surprising considering the upscale vibe they're going for in the restaurant. Oh well, the food is good, the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is nice.

I've only been here for lunch a few times (and not because I choose it, usually it's the choice of someone else in the lunch group - popular for business lunches - I always run into people from my work when I go here) and other than the fact that it's a very clean Chinese restaurant with cloth napkins and cloth covered tables and decent service, I'm not a big fan of the food and it's on the pricier side for Chinese food. Growing up, I'd very infrequently go to the Uncle Yu's in Lafayette and even back then, it wasn't my favorite. At any rate, while the restaurant itself is quite large with decent service and a clean atmosphere, the food is not the greatest, but maybe it's better for dinner? I always leave feeling full, but hardly ever truly satisfied with what I had just eaten. To echo the other yelpers who reviewed this place, it's a "suburban American-Chinese restaurant".

You can get decent American Chinese food here. The wonton soup is very good, fish fillets saute is excellent and the beef chow mein is flavorful and not greasy. This place can get pretty busy but they move people through pretty quickly. If you are craving authentic Chinese food this is not the place to go. This place is pretty average. Dinner is pretty pricey. The service is pretty swift though. For all the good things I had heard about it, I was pretty disappointed. The 2 prawn dishes I tried were pretty good; the meat was very juicy and crisp. But the chicken was super bland. Ask for your food spicy if you want ANY spice in it at all. I ordered my General Tsag's chicken medium and it wasn't spicy at all. I ended up having to load it with that Chinese spicy mustard, that stuff is da BOMB. It cleans them sinuses right out.

MANY years ago, I was introduced to the original Uncle Yu's in Lafayette, and I fell head over heals for their chicken salad instantly. So naturally, when they opened their store in San Ramon, it was even better, until in the early '90s when I moved to the south bay to go to school. I didn't have the luxury of just running down the street to get my fix. Recently I moved back to San Ramon, and have already been to Uncle Yu's several times. Now, while the rest of the food is good, the chicken salad is amazing. And they are so nice! If you are in the mood for some good Chinese food, I definitely recommend this place!

I'm not usually a big fan of Chinese food, but I liked this place. Maybe that's because it's definitely Americanized Chinese food (think PF Chang's, but a bit more Chinese), but I enjoyed it nonetheless. There's an appetizer that's crab and cheese fried up, and it's yummy. For my meal I had the General Tsau's chicken, which was spicy enough for me, but I am a wimp when it comes to spices. Also I didn't realize beforehand that it was family style so I ended up with a ton of extra food. Good, since Chinese food is always good as leftovers. The restaurant itself is on the nicer side. I felt under-dressed because the waiters wear tuxedos, but no one else in the restaurant was dressed up, so I guess it is pretty casual. The service was fast too--no complaints there. As soon as we were done with our appetizer, the soup was out, and as soon as that was done, we got our meal. Nice.

You can get a decent meal at Uncle Yu's. The atmosphere is nice and there are banquet rooms for larger parties. HOWEVER the thing diners should know before going there is not to expect any friendliness or warmth from anyone that works there. The staff actually have a snobby, superior demeanor about themselves and I find that very irritating. Also, whatever you do don't order a soda. There are no free refills. And one server put it, "we are not a fast food restaurant". The food is good but over-priced. There are many other fine Chinese restaurants in the area, with friendly staff, that are preferable to Uncle Yu's.

Wow! I would say this is top notch chinese cuisine. The price reflects the quality of ingredient, cooking and atmosphere. We had everything ranging from sweet and sour pork to the rack of lamb. Took my mom here for birthday, being Chinese, she prefers Chinese food but we should had known better after we walked in and there were NO CHINESE PEOPLE EATING HERE!!. Second, they put us in the back corner. Then we asked the waiter for water with lemon weges and we got lemon weges only-NO WATER. We placed our order which included Peking Duck as it is our daughters favorite dish. We waited for over 30 minutes for our first dish, by this time, the table next us was done with their meal and they ordered their food at the same time we did. 45 minutes later, they said they ran out of Peking Duck but they were bringing one from their other restaurant. We said "great". Then the manager comes over 5 min later and says that they ran out of Peking Duck but would give us another dish. REALLY IT TOOK YOU 50 MINUTES TO REALIZE YOU DON'T HAVE PEKING DUCK!!! My mom was so upset it ruined what was suppose to be her birthday celebration, The service was the worsed ever!! By the way the food is not real Chinese food. Save your money and go across the street to GREEN VALLEY CHINESE RESTAURANT where they serve REAL CHINESE FOOD for a lot less than what you pay here.

A huge fan of Uncle Yu's. Their service is great along with top notch food. My favorite dish is Crispy Chicken, Green Beans, Steamed Rice and you can't forget your sizzling rice soup. Mind you, I was only here one time... so far. I came here for a wedding rehearsal dinner in the "private rooms." For appetizers, I received a plate of the crab/cream cheese wonton (ok), egg roll (ok), and the BBQ pork spare rib (good). Our lazy susan became laden with snow peas and chicken (ok), orange beef (good), BBQ sea bass (good), walnut shrimp (good), mixed veggies (ok), shrimp fried rice (good), and chow mein (ok). There were leftovers but not because of the lack of taste of the food. The food was good and the service was great. After appetizers, we had Hot 'n' Sour Soup and it made me lose some of my appetite because I had a big blob of "something" in my soup.... maybe a clump of corn starch that was unstirred? I dunno. All I know is that the soup had this "amoeba-like" thing in it. Three stars means "A-OK" so I'd go back again but if I had another "amoeba-thing" in it, I'd be soooo grossed out!

This restaurant is amazing! A welcome departure from the red and gold tradition atmosphere of a Chinese restaurant, this is a great place to eat. Suburban American Chinese is the perfect description. Good place for business lunches, friendly staff and pretty good food. The crab puffs are a favorite. Some dishes are blander than what you'd expect at a Chinese restaurant but the lighter flavors are good for working lunches.

I like their vegetarian dishes and service is always great here. They get an extra plus for carrying brown rice. Forget dinner if you are on a budget. Go there for lunch instead. This is my absolute favorite place to get Chinese food. It is a more up scale Chinese restaurant with linen tablecloths and napkins. It's a little higher priced but it's worth it. It's family-style dining. The service is fast and friendly someone is right there to be sure your every need is met, I've never seen my water glass less than half full. On a budget? Come for lunch they have a lunch menu which includes soup and a side of rice or chow mein.

this place is fancy suburban americanized chinese food - which is not necessarily a bad thing. just not my cup of tea. i've been here plenty of times with co-workers, particularly for a "welcome" or "good-bye" luncheon. ordering a lunch special on one's own is on the more expensive side of chinese lunches, about $7-$10. but when the company treats with the banquet menu, it sure is good! and very filling as there are always leftovers the next day.

This place is amazing! I love their sweet and sour pork and crabmeat puffs. To the lady who wrote the review about "feeling dirty" because it's "not authentic", they never claim to be authentic. Look at the area you're in- they cater to the general population, which is mostly Americanized. That being said, service is great and prices are fair. The portions are generous and I often end up taking some home with me for the next meal. The ladies at the front desk are always kind and courteous- when being served, ask for Ming. Uncle Yu's, I love you!

Uncle Yu's serves some of the best Chinese food that I've ever had. We usually order take out. Some of my favorites are the BBQ Pork appetizer, the BBQ Pork Fried Rice, the Wonton Soup and the Lemon Chicken. The BBQ Pork appetizer is excellent. It has very lean pork with great hot mustard that easily clears your sinuses if you take too much of it. If you decide to eat in, the restaurant setting is upscale with white table cloths and waiters in tuxedos. The price is on the high side, but the quality of the food and the service makes it well worth it. This location has been in San Ramon for at least 25 years. So, they are certainly doing something right.

Uncle Yu's Ambience: Nice, clean, white table cloth/napkin, a little noisy when the crowd files in. Staff: Dressed well, somewhat attentive, slightly pushy to turn tables even then there's no wait. Food: A little pricey, portion was generous, ordered the crunchy chicken which I think translated loosely to what most places would call general tsao's chicken. Their version was spiced pretty good and yet way too sweet.

Food: I had the Kung Pow Three Star, with prawns, beef slices, scallops and vegetables in a spicy sauce. The sauce was rather bland and the prawns were medium sized shrimp... It wasn't bad. Service: above average, they were quick to not let my beer go dry and the food was out in typical Chinese place speed. Atmosphere: very nice inside for a Chinese place in a strip mall, had nice cloth tablecloths. The place did not have a lot of windows, and no outdoor seating. How I rate restaurant experiences: They get a star for being open, another star for a clean and decent atmosphere, another for good service, another for good food and 5 stars for all the above, and something exceptional.

Each time I've come here, I always feel so dirty. Why? Cause it's so unauthentic and so Americanized that I kind of am sad, but a lot of coworkers love this place so I bow to their whims and likes. This time I ordered the shrimp & scallop with vegetables with brown rice for the lunch special. It came with hot sour soup would was not hot in temperature and not sour enough. Did I mention this place is very Americanized? So I had to ask for chopsticks and the chopsticks they gave me were the wooden takeaway kind. Wow. Sad. The shrimp and scallop dish was good. More vegetables than actual shrimp or scallops. But the flavor was pretty good. Made me feel like I was eating something healthy. The service was ok. I always feel like there's this contempt from the folks that own this place. No smiles just kind of angry all the time but I guess they can get away with that as well as price things a bit more as they're in San Ramon. Overall I would never come here, but like I said...I only really go here because others make me.

After doing my research about Uncle Yu's to figure out if they were a safe place to eat at I finally decided to give them a try. They have a gluten free menu built right into their regular menu and after sitting down and speaking to the waiter I learned that all the items on the gluten free menu are dairy free as well. I am really glad my dad was there with me, because I had a hard time understanding his accent at times. I browsed over my options and a lot of them are very similar just with different variations of meat and vegetables in a similar sauce. They listed the ingredients to the gluten free sauce at the bottom of the page which was nice. I ended up with the Chicken with mixed vegetables in a light brown sauce and my dad ended up with the lemon chicken (not gluten free). Unfortunately you have to pay for rice separately here which was an additional 1.50 per person for white rice or 1.75 for brown rice. We both ended up with the white rice and the food came out relatively quickly. I liked that they brought me out a bottle of gluten free soy sauce without me even asking. Upon our dishes arriving I was surprised at the portion sizes. They were quite large which was nice. The chicken in both our dishes was all chicken breast which is the only way we would have really liked it so that was good. My dish was pretty bland, but it was gluten free and dairy free so I was happy either way. Wish they would have had a soup option that was gluten free or a little bit more variety on the types of sauces for the gluten free dishes, but either way at least they offer something.

This is my Oma's favourite spot to take the family out for dinner when I'm in town. She loves the white table cloth and napkins which makes it classy. The food is not authentic by any means, but it fits the area well. They have a good variety of vegan options and the food is not greasy at all. While the sauces seem a touch bland for me, I love spices and spicy foods so I can be a bit heavy as a critic on that. While I'm usually more for authentic food than Americanized, I do really like this place. They make pretty good cocktails too. I'd ask for a Manhattan. Yum. The service is fast and efficient. They are not the friendliest staff, but they are by no means rude or aggressive, more rushed. I would normally give the place 3 stars but since my Oma is such a fan and I love getting together with her and out of the house, I have to give it 4.

On Saturday, 8/9/14, my girlfriend and I ate at Uncle Yu's for lunch. We originally wanted to try the Livermore location but San Ramon is closer to where we live. Atmosphere/Decor: The restaurant is pretty nice. There's plenty of tables to sit at. The bar area is small. I like the Chinese decor throughout the restaurant. The white statues of a man and animal looked pretty cool. Food: My girlfriend and I decided to order the Lunch Special served with Hot & Sour Soup, fresh vegetables and choice of: steamed rice, brown rice, pork fried rice or vegetable chow mein. I went with the Broccoli Beef lunch special (Beef slices stir-fried with broccoli and carrots) and pork fried rice. The Broccoli Beef was really good. The meat was tender and had good flavor. The sauce tasted really good as well. They give you a lot of broccoli and meat. The pork fried rice was decent. I usually don't order pork fried rice because I'm afraid of the pork being too fatty or tasting old. This wasn't the case with this fried rice. The pork actually tasted good and fresh. The rice was just okay. I actually liked the fresh vegetables that were served with the lunch special. The cabbage tasted good. My girlfriend ordered the Orange Chicken lunch special (Crispy chicken with orange peel in a spicy sauce) and vegetable chow mein. She also ordered a side of white rice. She liked the food a lot. She said the chicken was very tender and the sauce tasted good. I noticed they use white meat for the Orange Chicken. I tried a few bites of her Orange Chicken. The Orange Chicken was really good. The chicken wasn't dry and the batter had a nice crispy crunch to it. My girlfriend said the vegetable chow mein was simple but tasted really good. I'm a fan of their vegetable chow mein. The noodles were cooked perfectly. Sometimes simple is better. My girlfriend said the white rice was fresh and it tasted good with the Orange Chicken. Service: Our waiter was average. He was very quiet. He took our orders in a timely manner and our food came out fairly quick. Overall: I liked Uncle Yu's. The food was good and it tasted fresh. I felt very clean and light after I ate my food. The lunch special is the way to go. It's under $10 and you get a lot of food for that price. If you want some good Americanized Chinese food give Uncle Yu's a try.

I really don't eat much Chinese food. As noted in other reviews, too much of it is gloopy, gloppy, covered in sauces and cheap cuts of meats that do nothing to improve the vitality of life. That said, Uncle Yu's is very good. This was my first time at the San Ramon location and I was impressed by the ambiance, service and action-packed (Full of people) this place can be. I don't think you can go wrong here: They have a decent wine list, good portions, and a wide selection. Can't wait to go back!

I've been a regular, along with my whole family and many of my friends, for years now. I just checked them out on Yelp and felt compelled to share my experience after reading some reviews that don't seem to understand Uncle Yu's. THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE AN AUTHENTIC ETHNIC CHINESE RESTAURANT. This is upscale Chinese food that is fresh and is meant to appeal to the masses, so the flavoring isn't too intense. But the food is delicious, the service is very fast at lunch for working professionals. Andy, the manager, has become like a friend and knows us by name. My favorite off the lunch menu is the Kung Po Three Combo, which is Kung Pao style plate with chicken, beef and prawns. It comes with rice/chow mein and steamed vegetables and a starter of hot & sour soup. I love their soup and will often finish my wife's. PS: Portions are awesome. My order is about $11 and I'll often have to take some back with me in a box. Bottom line, try it and make your own decision.

My family and I have gone to this place for years and years now, and I am never disappointed by the food or service. BEST pot stickers and chicken chow mein I've ever had, and their honey walnut prawns are out of this world! On top of that, the service is so classic old fashioned restaurant (the manager is always dressed like he's going to a gala!) that you always get a seat, and you are comfortable whether you're in casual clothing or celebrating a fancy night out. I came here last week on a Monday and it was around lunch time so this place began to fill up. First off, the decorations inside the place totally took me aback. I grew up in Chjnese--influenced family where Chinese restaurants were filled with loud Cantanonese chatter and the clanking of dishes. This place looked like they could be serving American or French-inspired dishes. The decorations had nothing to do with Chinese food whatsoever. There was only an altar at the entrance and a script above the bar. Besides that, nothing seems "Chinese" or "Asian" to me. Second of all, the menu was ALL in ENGLISH! I understand that the area is predominantly white but there was something about this place that seemed off to me. I went with the basic hot and sour soup with sweet and sour pork lunch special. It was definitely not bad but it wasn't amazing either. I went with an extremely safe choice so I didn't expect to be wow. Would I return? To be honest, I had a lot of great Chinese food and I feel like I can get the same quality at any Chinese fast food place so I wouldn't pay for the price for the same amount. Plus it didn't remind me of the childhood Chinese restaurants. It had this pretentious feel to it that didn't suit with me.

First time ordering from this place and last. When I placed the order over the phone I was told the order would be ready in 20 mins. I arrived to the restaurant per the specified time. I was greeted and my card was taken to be charged. I was told my order would be ready soon. Without any updates from the front desk, I waited an additional 25 mins. I inquired about the status by letting them know I've been waiting patiently for over 25 mins and that I was a new customer looking for some consideration for the inconvenience and I was told that my order would be ready soon. No explanation, no consideration nor an apology was given. My order finally came out 10 mins later (35 mins plus the 20 min phone order wait time = a total of 55 minutes). I received a half ass thank you. The food was fair but not worth the wait hence my last visit.

The food here is really delicious and for many of the items, it is reasonably priced. For others, it is rather expensive. I got the veggie tempura and I thought it was going to be what you usually get at a Japanese restaurant. NO! It was less batter-y (which is so much better) and it came out on a large plate. My mom got a fish dish and it was nearly $15 and it came with a few pieces. I liked the sauce, it was very good. We also got the spinach and tofu soup. You pay by the bowl and I thought it would come in a little cup but it was in a bowl and $2.50 for a bowl of soup is great. This place is obviously a classy place. I think we were the only ones in jeans. We didn't really care, the food was good and nobody gave us weird looks, so that's a plus. One thing I appreciated was the serves would clear your table right away and they never bothered you with asking if your food is okay if you are in the middle of a conversation. The guy was about to come up to our table but saw that I was in a good conversation with my mom so he didn't come by. Overall, I had a great time. This is now one of my favorite chinese places. I could tell they are very popular. We went at 6:30 and we had to wait 5 minutes and they kept getting togo order calls. Anyway, very yummy, I would definitely go here again.

I was charged the money for the order, then got a voicemail saying my order is cancelled because the restaurant was closed. I called the restaurant, there open until 10PM. Whenever my wife and I want to eat out, this place is on the top of our list. The food there is always tasty and of consistently high quality. I usually order Mongolian beef, or, when not in the mood for spicy, sweet-and-sour prawns. My wife prefers their tomato braised fish. The staff is accommodating and friendly, they already know our seating and food preferences. We both like the clean white tablecloth on the tables, fast service, and in general the opportunity to have a nice meal at a reasonable price.

So disappointed..... I ordered Cashew Chicken and the brown sauce was just a watery clear liquid with no taste. The whole dish was lacking salt. The worst part was the chicken. It was rubbery. I was expecting nice white meat. The meat did not look like or taste like chicken so I didn't eat any of it. I have had better quality meat at fast food Chinese.

Recently we had my niece's and cousin's Red Egg and Ginger Party at Uncle Yu's and they were great! It was honestly one of the best experiences we had working with a restaurant (and we have a big family so these events happen pretty frequently). To bullet point it: - We asked for a buffet instead of a sit down banquet and they graciously accommodated us, including servers at the buffet to make sure things went smoothly. - They also allowed us to bring in our own whole roasted pig (tradition) and cake. - When we informed them about my cousin's peanut allergy they were incredibly accommodating and careful with their preparations. - They were really helpful when it came time to set up decorations and favors. And they set up the room really nicely (there was more than enough space to move around and visit with everyone). -They worked with us on the menu so that all tastes and dietary concerns were addressed! - The food was good and held up well in the buffet line. Overall, Uncle Yu's is great and I can not recommend them enough! If you have a big event (I think we had around 90 people, and there was space for more- originally we invited around 130), then I would really consider Uncle Yu's. The restaurant was clean, nicely decorated, and the staff and management were so helpful and understanding.

Can you read English! First question being asked in a Chinese restaurant! Me and my wife went to this restaurant and when we entered, we were led by a gentlemen not in uniform to a table, and before I sat down, he asked us if we can read English ( spoke to us in English ) .... I thought this is interesting, did this restaurant ask every customer the same question or just to us only because of our look or our skin color...? What a way to welcome customers! Obviously this was not a present start for this dinner, we simply ordered couple of chow fun and fried noodle. When we received the bill and on one of the dishes we were charged $1 more than what's posted on the menu, then we asked why, we were told them that the additional $1 charge is for the gravy!! This is a very unique restaurant which you need to read English and also they charged additional charge ( not on the menu ) for gravy !!

I can count on Uncle Yu's for a solid, quality meal at any time. The service is fast, friendly and attentive. The food is always fresh and delicious. The restaurant is clean and inviting. Take-out come home nicely packed, fresh and hot.

We meant to write a review last night while we were at the restaurant but we didn't have our phones. I quote what my boyfriend has said to me 4 or maybe 5 times when we were at uncle yus. "THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST EXPERIENCE I HAD AT A RESTAURANT!" We loved it so much! We love when we can enjoy our appetizer with our wine for a little bit then once we are done our dinner comes to us. We love how if comes to use in step and not all at once! We are regulars at uncle yus.. But most of the time we order to go- and even by the time your food gets home. It's still amazing! The food is always so fresh there too! We def recommend this place. Service and food is amaaaaazing! :) thank you uncle yus!
