No real dance floor, no real separation between the bar and the pseudo dance floor that's between the bar and the tables along the wall. Also, not too thrilled with having to play kindergarten "line up for recess" along the wall outside between there and the parking lot next door. Security's fine, drinks are apparently okay (I didn't drink last night), but it's not someplace that I'll frequent. It's probably okay earlier, like before an Improv show or something. If I decide to give that option a shot, I'll update here. Until then, this is just a pretty average spot.

can't believe people even go here!! For one, it feels like you're going through a damn airport director with there picture taking and ID scanning. They have no respect for their customers or their employees. I asked one of the security guards why is was necessary for them to take pictures? He didn't even answer my question and rudely said "stand right here" so that I can take a picture, and then shoved my ID in my hand. As I was waiting to use the ladies restroom I saw this female employee named Stacy push this other employee Kenny saying "you don't need to stand by the girls restroom" he said "they wanted me to stand here to make sure no men try to go in" she starts pushing him again he finally tells her "stop pushing me!" Seconds later this other employee named Patrick come storming up to Kenny and said in from of other coworkers and customers "GET YOUR SHIT and GET THE FUCK OUT YOU DON'T TALK TO YOUR BOSS LIKE THAT YOU'RE FIRED!!" he was in his face telling him that. I couldn't believe it. I started trying to tell Patrick that Kenny didn't do anything wrong he didn't even care to hear me out. He walked away. So then I was totally pissed I started asking for names and telling them that they can get sood for wrongful termination, racism and favoritism. Dave supposedly one of the managers got pissed off and kicked me out. I told him "that's fine but you guys have a law soot against you because this is bullshit" and I just got there had one beer in my hand and Dave took it away from me. Horrible place, will never recommend it or go there again.

Tres is alright.....at least you can always count on there being a crowd (90% are usually men). And you can come in wearing jeans and flats, very casual setting. People do get rowdy in here... but the taco stand right outside, damn...hits the spot when you are too drunk to walk to La Vic's.

I heart the fish tacos. That's all I really can say, but because they are so good, I do have to share.

Tres Gringos is No Bueno!! The place continues to move up the "don't go to this rat hole" scale. I used to enjoy going there, like many of the other reviewers but for some reason, they just keep getting worse. I mean, I'm a hard working, easy going guy, that dresses casual. I came all the way there twice now from pleasanton to be told I can't get in because I'm wearing the wrong clothing. A black tshirt with NorCal on it, and no ifs, ands or buts, they told me NO...Good thing I had friends that came and had a shirt to lend me. I go in, and to my surprise, NOT, there are guys wearing sporting attire, which the sign says no too, and MANY gangster types in there flashing colors and what not. I guess it's all who you know, but I guess I'm scary enough that they tried to keep me out. My down fall is I still went in and paid money....The place is a joke...!!! They need to rethink things there....Or maybe hire new management...The only reason I still went in was the taco/quasidilla vendor that never seems to fail....Hey tres gringos...He is the only reason I gave you one star....

Tres Gringooooos! This place was packed on the night that I went. Really... interesting crowd. A mix of hispanics, whites, blacks, and a sprinkle and dash of asians here and there. The dance floor is basically anywhere you choose it to be and the patio is a chill spot for when you need a breather. I love the atmosphere here... everyone's just so friendly, whether they're completely inebriated or not! I got hooked up getting in and with drinks too, sooo.. Tres Gringos is fine with me =)

Had less fun here than I did at Toon's. I guess it's just not my scene. Didn't care for the music, but the taco's sold right out front were fantastic.

its on of those places that u go to when you just want to hang out and not go to a club. its kinda a fall back place. kinda cool. just remember there is a bar in the back at the cabana that rarely has a line more than 3 deep. weekdays seem to be the most active there. saturdays...uhhh not so much....... but if u have no other plans i say go for it. we got in twice without having to wait in that ridiculous line...maybe because it was ovbious that we werent trying to sneak in with our fakes.

I'll admit it, im a little biased about this place. Not only do I have a really good friend who bartends here I also have many fond yet hazy memories from this place. Like many people before me have said, nowadays you have to be TANKED to enjoy this place. Otherwise all the bedazzled ed hardy/affliction tees, faux hawks, and hoochie mamas who frequent this place will make you wish you were blacked out just so you don't remember the experience in the morning. I have, on more than one occasion, witnessed people having sex with their clothes on. If you do happen to stumble in here sober, make sure Gabriela is your bartender, she makes great drinks and isn't an asshole

Worst security in the bay area, not only will you stand in line for an hour or more, then be rudely questioned about your attire and ID, then they will jump you in the back on the way out and then lie to the police. Then the police will arrest you which will cost you hundreds of dollars. Shut Tres Gringos down! Boycott!!! atleast until they re-evaluate their security team. Oh yeah and if something goes wrong don't think you will get to talk to any kind of supervisor or person in charge. They'll all tell you they are the manager but you have to talk to their boss to get helped which is a continuous f you. until you get some e-mail whcih leads to a caterer.

Decent food and service was okay. Was there on a business appointment and they are not able to produce an itemized receipt to submit to my accounting department. Don't bother if you need to turn in an expense report.

Normally I don't like this place. Too crowded, too many people who already had too much to drink, etc. But after all it is a bar and I can't fault them for being what they are! However, I am writing my review for a different time of day than I think most people come here. If you come here on a Saturday before going to a show across the street at the Improv this place rocks. They have happy hour from 5-8PM which is pretty much unheard of on a Saturday, especially in downtown San Jose. During that time the place is pretty empty but the service is really good. Our waitress recommended the nachos which were super yummy and perfect to share. Drinks and food were on the happy hour menu and everything was really good. If you coming during non-peak hours, you will be happy here. Coming at night on a Saturday and paying a cover, no freaking way for me, but appetizers and drinks before a show is perfect!

My usual place San Jose Bar and Grill was SRO due to there being the Giants NLCS game and a Niners game at the same time. I decided to try Tres Gringos next door. It was about half full. The food was good but the service was lousy. They didn't have enough wait staff for even the modest crowd. After a fairly short wait we ordered an appetizer and I got the "bottomless" PBR special. It was only 10 bucks! A better deal than the $15 at SJBG next door. But at SJBG, they give you a pint glass, and they actually refill it when it is empty! At this place, they brought me what looked like a 6 oz plastic cup of beer. I was thirsty, so I finished it in about 5 minutes. I spent the next 30 minutes staring at the bottom of my bottomless beer. I tried several times to get the waitresses attention, and finally went to the bar myself to ask for a refill, only to be completely ignored for another 10 minutes. When I finally got to ask for a refill, she seemed upset and I waited almost five more minutes for her to actually fill it. I also ordered food while I had her attention at the bar. I finished my next 6 oz aliquot before the food arrived, but since it was delivered by the busser, I couldn't ask for a refill. About halfway through the meal, a miracle! The waitress came to the table and asked if we needed anything. My mouth was full of food, so I picked up my obviously empty plastic cup and held it out with a smile. She turned her back and walked away! On her way back to the bar I flagged her down and. Asked for a refill. I got it, at which point the special was over. It only lasted to the end of the game. So three quarters of football, about 2 hours; a total of 18 oz of beer. The place emptied out after the game, but we still sat there 15 more minutes waiting for our check. I figured I got about half my money's worth, so I docked her tip 5 bucks. Never going back.

After walking around downtown for 30 minutes and not finding a bar that we didn't have to wait at, thank goodness for Tres! We immediately had plenty of seating at the bar - no one even checked our IDs. I'm not sure if I like that I now look old enough but getting carded is still reassuring! I was going to get a margarita but my friend shrieked in excitement (fyi - he is a manly man) when he saw that Tres had chavelas on the happy hour menu. The bartender told us they still had a Cinco de Mayo especial for super chavelas for only $11. Heck yeah we got them! I never knew about this drink, but I sure got a lot of people smiling at my beaming Asian glow. I was so relaxed as I watched the Sharks get pummeled and enjoyed the décor & music of the place. I have yet to stop by here during the nightlife, but I liked how it wasn't too crowded/busy when I went

YUCK!! We went by for dinner and drinks and were really, really disappointed. Kinda felt like I walked into a high school cafeteria that serves alcohol! I ordered the enchiladas and it tasted like lasagna, absolutely no cumin, chili powder--anything that would make this soupy tomato mess more authentic. Guess its my fault for ordering food from a place with "Gringo" in the name.

Shout out to the blonde haired gentlemen with the koi fish tattoo, that guy's a straight beast. I swung by Tres a few weeks ago when I was in town for a business trip, and I wanted to grab a quick drink + watch the Giants game. I intended to have only one or two drinks, but three hours later I was raging in the bar having the time of my life all thanks to bartender extraordinaire known as "Stefan". Overall it was a great experience and I highly recommend Tres Gringos Cabo Cantina to any local SJSU resident. If you are in town for one night definitely make sure you go to tres!

this was my college stomping grounds, my favorite place in the world to go during my hey day. Kenny Hamilton , GM is a god. Dave Powell is a rock star. This place is so legit. Its no wonder the Sharks frequent it. This was my cheers and I was Norm. Great memories. Thanks Tres!

Soooo after knowing this place is mostly popular for the night scene, I still decided to try it for dinner. I came here with an out of town friend, just walking around downtown, settled on mexican, and la vic's was just a little too far for our liking. So we choose a table on the tiny outdoor patio, very poor choice as the security for the bar next door would not stop staring. It set an automatic awkward and selfconscious surrounding for my eating habits. However, this is not the fault of Tres, so that is not a deduction from the stars. What is, however, is the lack of service and quality of food. The waitress/bartender took her sweet time to saunter over to our table, and considering we were the ONLY table in the place, it should not take ten minutes to be offered drinks or brought water. I ordered a burrito, and my friend ordered the fish tacos. Both were very disappointing, lacking flavor, texture and overall appeal. I say, stick to Tres for the drinks and nighttime atmosphere, because anything during the day you will find it stops short of satisfaction.

This place has only *one* redeeming value. I will show up and sit outside on the benches and watch the arguments, fights, and other miscellaneous drunken buffoonery. The people who frequent this establishment tend to be shallow, ignorant, and prideful. At the later hours it becomes obscenely packed inside. This is when I get a front row seat. Waifish fashionistas, steroid pumped dullards, and hood-rat wannabees converge in a drunken frenzy. Eventually some minuscule event (drink spilled on sneakers, oolging at another's female property, etc) causes an outright fight to break out. This is an entertaining and predictable event. Like clockwork every Friday/Saturday. In fact, the city has already caught on. Frequently, you will see an ambulence and/or squad car parked outside, waiting for the next big winner to be chosen. It has to be seen to be believed. There are other funny sights as well....But don't take my word for it. Go. Just don't go inside.

Located downtown San Jose, you'd expect a place like this to be at least decent. I cannot stand the staff here. Rude, slow, not attentive and clueless. The food tasted OK, the alcohol was mediocre but it seemed so hard for us to get anyone's attention after we sat down at the bar. The bar was sticky and the whole place smells like stale beer. The music was even loud in the afternoon when nobody was there, perhaps they wanted to showcase how oblivious they are to the public. I always enjoy going to the San Jose Improv, I wish there was a better bar across the street for me to stop by after the shows.

Came here last night after the fights at HP...my friend's brothers idea. I've read the reviews and I'm thinkin maybe I was just with some really good company cause I didn't think this place was bad at all. It was a great mixed crowd, music was decent, and drinks were stiff enough. Can't really comment on the cost of drinks as my friend was gentlemen enough to buy all my drinks. And all the guys I came in contact with were polite and respectful. The bouncers all did their jobs, the place was crowded but not too crowded to a point where we couldn't dance. Love that I can get tacos just by going to their outdoor patio. Food, alcohol, and dancing...PERFECT!!

this is the bar that i always end up at. even if i don't plan on coming here. if i'm in downtown san jose, chances are around 1am, i will be stumbling down 2nd street and into tres gringos. it's not at all fancy, its kinda dirty actually, the crowd is a little sketch and its super small, but i like it. the bartenders are usually fast, the music is dance-able and i always meet interesting people (who i usually never see again). its funny cause i usually only go here on wednesdays (no, i don't play beer pong), and do you know who goes out on wednesdays?? people who like to party hard and those are the best people to drunkenly converse with. nothing will make sense, but it will feel right. haha ALSO, the taco man outside is a life saver, fresh chicken quesadilla at 2am? yes please!

  • James L.

One star. Minus one star. I can only say this much. Lame lines, girls only, I'm the door greeter and you guys can't go in type of BS. It's ridiculous. It does not make any business sense to block all the gentlement outside, let 2-5 ladies inside in 30 minute increments, while other bars are popping with drinks, ladies/gents and music. No wonder there's no gentlement making the drink purchases for the 10 ladies they just let inside an hour ago....Because they're still waiting in line outside. LOL By midnight, the ladies didnt get enough of their drink on, the guys are STILL waiting outside and the bar owner blames the marketing department for decrease in sales. Maybe look outside by the door, it's the bouncers you hired.

I've gone here twice so far- once on a Wednesday and another time on a Tuesday. The Wednesday night happened to be beer pong night. I'm not one who likes playing to drink (I like to just get the job done and drink), so I wasn't a fan of people constantly poking around me trying to get their balls off the floor. It kind of felt like a house party with all of the beer pong tables set up, loud music and drunk people trying to look super hot while grinding on a tiny dance floor. I had a few sips of my friend's drinks which weren't too weak or too strong, so that's not a bad thing. Although I was pretty sober this night, I enjoyed a night of drunk dancer watching (in a non-creeper kinda way) and good company with my friends. I headed here with some friends for $2 Tuesdays before we went to a party. I was surprised at how much room there was without the numerous beer pong tables set up. There wasn't a lot of people, but everyone who was there still seemed to be having fun. Not too many people on the more spacious looking dance floor and the music wasn't bad, I'm guessing the floor was empty because there just wasn't a lot of people. I'm sure Wednesdays appear fuller and more crackin since the beer pong tables take up more room than regular bar tables occupy on a Tuesday night. I got a round of vodka & pineapple for me and my friends. I ended up double fisting drinks cuz one of the girls wasn't a fan of vodka. I don't know if I'm becoming immune to the taste alcohol or if it's the bar, but it just seemed like I was drinking watered down pineapple juice. I couldn't detect too much vodka. While sipping on the drinks at the bar, I noticed a few other girls ordering a layered shot with whipped cream on top that I've never seen before. We found out that it was a strawberries & cream, so I got a couple of those, too. You definitely can't taste alcohol in this delicious drink, so if you're looking for something that tastes like candy and is easy to drink, holler at strawberries & cream. Watered down drinks or not, I was still buzzed by the time we left the bar for the party, and the bill wasn't too disappointing. $2 Tuesdays is a fun way to pre-party for a party! I experienced two totally different crowds both nights, and I'd have to say I still enjoyed myself to some extent, but I don't think I would go here if I had to pay cover.

For some reason, I always seem to have bad experiences at this place. I've tried to get into it because I know a lot of people enjoy themselves here, but everytime I go I'm treated very rudely by the people that work here. The carding process is always a hassel. Either they examine my perfectly valid card for about 5 minutes or card me at the door and at the bar. I know underage people sneaking in is a problem, but come on guys. Don't make everyone feel like they're doing something wrong. They also tried to charge me a cover the other night, which I found surprising because the place doesn't really have anything extraordinary to necessitate a cover (i.e. large dance floors, live music, really cool lighting/decorations.) There are many other places in the vicinity to try, so pass this one up.

  • Ryan O.

We came here last night and it was beer pong night, so they had a bunch of tables set up along the wall so that was pretty cool. Bartenders are great, music was alright, small dance floor, but we had fun here & will probably be back again.

  • James L.

The line is so bad, you gotta wait for like 30 minutes to get in and that was when we were in the FRONT of the line. I waited about 30 minutes until my friend that was already in and flirted with the bouncers a bit before we even got in. There seems to be a strict check in and it takes forever. I saw the bouncer that was arguing with a guy for over 20 minutes if his ID was real or not and while everybody waits, all the girls get in first if you flirt a bit with the secu. The place is okay at best and I wouldn't go back there unless a friend really wants to go.

Wanna be around felons? Gangsters? Bouncers who try to act like cops but can't be because of their past prison time? If so this is the bar for you. Not me. Nothing about this place was cool. Don't like waiting in line, cover charges, expensive drinks (skipped the food). Worst experience I have ever had at a bar. AVOID!!

It's fun, lively, but definitely a young crowd. I went on a Friday night and didn't have to pay cover but I heard that if it's at capacity, guys have to pay up to $15? insane! too much for this place. But drinks are cheap. two bars. small place but still big enough to have dance and enjoy yourself.

This place is actually set up quite well inside and has a mixed crowd, that is if you can make it inside. The bouncers here are gay as all hell, only letting in their friends and hot women. They have hated on me at the door once, for wearing a nice peacoat in late December, that was supposedly too baggy, and I know quite a few people who have been hated on in there. Totally not worth it, since there is like a hundred guys inside, and only 15 girls. The people who own this place also own The Voodoo Lounge, and the San Jose Bar & Gril right next door, and not suprisingly, all place have the same atmosphere: too many thug ass guys, and no women.

One of the better bars to frequent on the hit or miss strip of 2nd street. They play a good variety of music, have great drink and happy hour specials, and even set up beer pong on certain nights (for a fee, of course). Plus, since I refuse to pay cover to get into a bar/club/lounge in San Jose (who do they think they are?!) Tres only charges after 10pm (or maybe it's 11pm?) on the busy nights. Score! The drinks are strong and not varied, which if you know what you want, is a good thing. Still overpriced, but whatever. And the bathrooms...I don't think I've ever gotten into one without waiting at least 10 minutes. I've gotten hit on more here than any other bar downtown (if that's the kinda thing you're looking for)--just expect a very college (or wannabe college) crowd.

  • Stacy S.

This was bar/club 1 of 5, kicking off labor day weekend. My friend lives on 11th street, and we made the trek over there by foot. On the way over there, we saw a car crash on 4th and San Carlos. A good samaritan got out of his car to help, and meanwhile, a crowd started forming around the debacle, and thugs jumped in his car and took off with it!! The other people that got in the accident were about to go at it with fists, and it was all around something straight from a movie. I digress... Anyways, I am never disappointed with this place. Its cheap to get in, and the crowd is diverse. The DJ makes me wanna shake my booty, and there are always cute boys there with nice shoes.

Went to Tres Gringos on a Friday night after 10pm and there wasn't any cover. A Corona is $5 though which I find somewhat ridiculous. People were dancing wherever they pleased, I don't know why they block off a tiny dance floor! I really liked the music there and the crowd was cool... a lot more mixed, relaxed and plain less sketchy than other places I've been to in downtown SJ.

    (3)
  • Berg W.

Here's how you enjoy Tres Gringos: go on a random weeknight during happy hour and order fried fish tacos...nothing else. Well I guess you should order a couple Pacificos and a shot or two of tequila. No other food is really worth paying for. I guess the other way to enjoy it is to be a completely wasted unattractive girl or douche-bag SJSU student on beer pong night or the weekend nights.

    (2)
  • iPunchfish -.

Beer Pong Wednesdays! And their greedy asses got rid of their prior "$50 per person for unlimited beer pong" bullshit. Now, you pay your money, grab a table, and get a shitty pitcher of beer from an amazon woman sitting in a giant beach chair. I felt like a little kid asking for more orange juice or something.

1 star for there fish taco.margarita combo during happy hour. may have gone away since. Taco guy is a Nazi-esque a-hole and charges way too much. FYI they are only good because you are prob drunk and cant taste anything. they used to be 1 dollar and have him in the back by the dumpster, back when tres was cool. $5 cover what a joke, it used to be free ( when it was cool) then they started covers in summer and now mehhh They lost all of there cool bartenders except for 1 or 2 and the old barback/security guards now think they are kings since they have been promoted. If not happy hours drink are costly and often weak.

  • xochi c.

The place to be at on a Tuesday night. Its a mixed crowd and drinks are usually reasonable. You can get a corona for 2 bucks. Plenty of college students come here and they play different music depending what night it is. I have been there on Saturday nights and its not that much crowded. Be prepared to wait at the bar though, they take forever to take your drink order

    (3)
  • Katie P.

Stunner Shades look no more... Sorority Girls a definite, Fraternity boys a must and the occasional out of towners looking for a good time(maybe a mistake)! As Tres was my first bar being a SJSU grad you come to love the all of the above crowd. I would have to say that the bar is not for the faint of hearts. The prices really aren't that bad, but like I said if you aren't use to the downtown crowd which on any given night can change then I wouldn't recommend it! If you are an SJSU student you have to go at least once... it's not a Spartan experience without a trip to Tres!

OMG. I can't believe I am giving a downtown Man Jose bar 4 stars. But, wait - WAIT! Don't cast stones at me yet. Allow me to explain,... First of all, if anybody knows anything about me, it's that I h-a-t-e partying in downtown SJ. I h-a-t-e it. Ugh. I cringe and scowl every time my friends suggest going there. They now know that they shouldn't even bother inviting me if they're heading to downtown SJ. However, on this particular occasion, a close girl friend wanted to celebrate her birthday at Tres Gringos. She's been raving about how much fun this joint is - it all goes in one ear and comes out the other, blah blah blah. Despite my protests, I, being a loyal friend, found myself reluctantly driving through downtown SJ, rolling my eyes at all the chromed-out low riders pumped up on hydraulics and other ridiculous modifications that these scrubs can't even afford so you know the parts were stolen, wondering how the hell I ended-up an unwilling participant in a rap video. S@#$. On top of all that, there was an unbelievable amount of traffic in downtown SJ - did everybody and their baby mamas decide to come out that night? WTF was going on? Secretly, I hoped that, by the time I was able to find parking, it would already be 1:30am and, oh well, time to go home! When I finally made my way into Tres Gringos, I was actually pleasantly surprised. The woman collecting cover was incredibly sweet - I only had $3 on me and she let me in (cover is only $5). The crowd is a lil' ghetto-fabulous (note the addition of "fabulous") but, BUT, there is a lot of diversity and the age range is 20-30s. Not bad. And, to my pleasant surprise, again, there was actually some (I said SOME, not a lot of) eye candy. WHOA. Was I really in downtown SJ? Or have my standards gotten lower? And, to my pleasant surprise, AGAIN, there were several guys who were waaaay taller than eye-level. Mother of God. Stop the presses. But, what really, REALLY, made this a 4-star night, was the dope-@#$$ music. Yesssss. Hip-hop and Top 40. Excellent mixing, and the DJ even took requests. AND, OMG, there was this kick-@$$ rock star dancer who was just tearin' it up with his friends on the dance floor and, just for kicks, also goin' crazy and acting totally silly. I mean, he busted out with some old school 80s and cheerleading moves, haha! Just watching them alone would have made my night. I also played wingman for one of my shy friends. Yes, I am that loyal and that good. She owes me. Overall, it was a tres entertaining night at Tres Gringos. I might just be making Tres Gringos an exception to the rule.

Started my night off here last night with my friend around 10. Ordered a vodka cranberry and the bartender told me they were having $2 special on well drinks until 11. Awesome!! Drinks were well made, not to strong which is good for me lol. My friend got shots which were also $2 until 11. Good music, good crowd not too ghetto and not too crowded (it was still pretty early though). Overall, was fun and would probably come back.

Drinks-a-flowin' - good music for all - wonderfully mixed crowd. Great place to hang out and pound a few drinks before or after the Improv (across the street).

If you want to know my opinion of this place, see my review of San Jose Bar & Grill. Same vibe. Perhaps they're next to each other? WHAT A COINCIDENCE! Sarcasm abound, bitches! San Jose nightlife-- it's FAAAAAAANTASTIC! This place gets one star for the one and only time I went there when my buddies were spinning for a friend's barfday party. If you are super duper cool to get yourself past the rent a thugs and the bar and into the VIP/party basement/gangbang debauchery chamber, then I got two words for you: stripper pole. And watching drunk bitches try to be a stripper but slip and fall on their asses? PRICELESS! San Jose night life has some redeeming values, I guess...

came here to watch the lakers vs boston game with new friends. lots of team spirit on both ends. also, the place had great flautas that went well with my margaritas. good job! keep a look out for miguel, the time traveling latino. he's the coolest guy i've ever met!

Best bar downtown. Don't do anything to piss off the bouncers & you'll be fine. Go there more than once & you'll get to know the people that are important, & before long the line, cover, & drink prices all seem to slowly disappear. More fun than any other bar downtown & it's one of the most laid back too. Go there if you wanna have a fun time & relax & chill.

Simply Ghetto...don't go there unless you want to hang out with random too drunk college students that think they can have any girl they want...the bouncers are also crazy and think just cause theyre bouncers theyre the Sh*$.....ummm sorry NO....When you bounce in vegas then come talk to me... Never going there again....

Normally I enjoy heading to tres to meet up with my friends back home. But this night was ruined by a bouncer name Juan, he kicked me out because I danced in the walk Zone once. After apologizing and explaining that I had no intention of disrespecting his authority he kicked me out. While being escorted out a person pushed me and said get the fuck out. So i said don't disrespect someone who protects this country. Then Juan immediately kicked me out and seconds later said fuck what he says about the military. Juan disrespected someone who has protected this country and does not take time understand what comes out of his mouth. Therefore Juan obviously has no respect for anyone who has served this country. Tres would be a great place but Juan definitely brings down the vibe of a usual fun greeting place. PLEASE TAKE THIS REVIEW SERIOUSLY, because I have been to tres everytime I come home from the military and Juan has ruined tres for me.

I don't know how my friend can frequent this place. It's a dump. Their decorations are lame and tacky. Their entrance is retarded. We walked up to the line only to be asked to walk around the divider next to the tree, and basically end up where we were in the first place. The crowd are older in my opinion and more than a handful of people should be hitting the gym, not pounding beers. Oh yeah. They put beers in plastic cups. That's just asking for spills left and right. The only good thing about this place is the little man making them tacos/quesadillas in the front and a couple of the bartenders and security guards who are how you say, "muy caliente". Hahah. Don't mind me.

Two stars is a stretch for this place. But I do have to give one gigantic star for it being a great people watching venue. Sitting on the patio was hilarious. Not only can you escape the mind numbing beats coming from inside but you get to avoid all the pretentious assholes and down right bitches that frequent this place.... ooo and bullshit with the security on the other side of the fence. The people that party in San Jose I could do without. I never really understood this dressing up to the nines to hit up and overly crowded shit bar. Give me a pair of jeans and a dive bar any day! Ended up bullshitting with a few cool cats over a beer I really didn't like (beer selection is shit) and posting it on the patio the entire night while bitches eyeballed us for our spot. Oooo and there were actually two bouncers checking ID's that night. First meat head thoroughly checked it then handed back to another shit for brains so he could double check. WHAT!?

Although this isn't my favorite place to go downtown it still deserves 4 stars because I always have a good time when I am here. I will always see someone I know which is cool and nothing beats $2 Tuesdays, and no cover on that night!!!! Place can get a little crowded though. The patrons are actually pretty cool and much better then other bars/clubs in San Jose, you can tell this is a spot for the college students and being a student myself I feel like I fit right in. The bouncers are hella cool too, if they know you or know someone in your party you will never be bugged by perverted men, they defiantly handle situations. Don't forget once your evening is coming to a close get the street tacos, or get them when you want to take a break from dancing. The tacos are yummy!!! Fun night will be had here, and the bartenders are great!!

This place is pretty much the same as its next door counterpart SJ Bar and Grill, except that it has a "Mexican" tint to it. The food is ok for what it is. I also try to avoid this place at all costs on weekend nights because the same bros and thugs that go to SJ Bar and Grill end up here. The only reason I've been here recently is to watch the Packers-Cowboys game and SJ Bar and Grill was full. C'est la vie.

  • Samantha S.

I have been here several times and always have a blast. I've never had a problem with the obstinate card checkers at the door or with getting a good drink at the bar. I always have a blast dancing with mis amigas on the small, often packed, dance floor. However, I have met some shady guys (minus one star) here, but once they figure out I am NOT going home with them- I am left alone to party! PS- sometimes they have novice bartenders, who charge $5-7 bucks for a solid drink that I instruct how to concoct.

I'm going to have to start this review by paraphrasing comedian Greg Geraldo "San Jose is a weird place. You guys don't care about your drunk people. In front of a couple of your bars it goes from sidewalk to rail tracks with no warning. Some of them don't even have that; it goes bar, tracks." He is talking of course, of Tres Gringos. This place does have a mixed crowd but half the people seem to be having "forced fun", as in please let the alcohol kick in faster. I know I was in that mood. Still it wasn't too shabby as far as San Jose's concerned. Just stay away from the rail tracks.

    (3)
  • Jeffrey B.

This place is overrated! It charges people a cover and has overly priced drinks while trying to be a pseudo dive / college bar. Beer pong tourneys are fun, but the cash rewards do not add up. Tres gringo is definitly taking a big cut of it

    (2)
  • mario t.

Out of control drunks. Cheep drinks. Fights. Chollos and students all mixed into one package. It's not as bad is it sounds. I've always had a good time there.... but it's hit or miss on the company you will share. It's all San Jose baby. Did i mention it's just about ALWAYS packed? Second bar downstairs has a shuffle board and a stripper pole! Wooo.

I go here almost every time partying in downtown SJ and its always a chill place to be. The place is crackin' and usually never fails. Imma be real...if your looking for a train of Asian girls or a crowd of Asian boys, your probably better off going to Tikki or something. I am an Asian guy who likes diversity, and Tres Gringos is the place to be if you wanna meet all kinds of people. Most of the people here go to San Jose state so if you go to SJSU, you will probably run into some classmates. always crowded and bouncing is pretty strict, but its understandable since they got busted a couple times for catching underage kids in there. If you need to sober up and eat something, there is a taco stand by the smoking area that serves some bomb carne asada!

  • Kevin C.

Reminds me of a high school house party but in a bar. It's a cool little spot but I guess I felt like Tres feels like they are the shit but if you have traveled the world you know this place is pretty wack. They have good beer and a lot of hoes to spit game at. I would only go here if your a college immature person who can't party with the big dogs yet. And there bouncers are stupid idiots who think they are bouncing a million dollar club.

    (2)
  • T D.

Wow, surprised this place got such high ratings. I went last Friday and the music was ok, this drinks were the same club-expensive price at $10 each. The dance floor (the part that was roped off near the bathroom) was literally the size of my bedroom. It was small, most of the people dancing were guys anyway. It was a mixed crowd of Hispanic/Black/White. Some of the people danced on the aisles so it made it very hard to walk around, similar to Tiki. I've been here twice and both times it sucked. Note to self: Never go here again.

BASED ON NIGHTLIFE / BAR Era.. Alrgt, So much stress has came from TRES.. But 3 Stars says A-ok, so thats what it Deserves. REASONs: 1. Drinks Mixed strong enough 2. Male/Fem. ratio good 3. And they keep Tables Out for seating along with the Little Cabana Kick it spot. Basically Its always goin' on there, and you can make it an all night spot, IF THE BAR spot is what you want. CONs the " Bia-Biaaa's " will nag about is the young Crowd: 21-23 Majority, of course hard to walk thru@times, and bathroom lines a B*tch. .AND ....there can be some Beef if you come in with an attitude.. SO HOLD UR GIRL TIGHT ! LOL ! P.S. BIG-UP 2MY MAN KEEPIN THE MENS BATHROOM Fresh.. He Knows wasup and Can Respect an Out of Town player wen he see's me.. TIP MY MAN !

I visit the place on the regular. I can't say I've been particularly fond of it, other than on Beer Pong Wednesdays. Beer Pong Wednesdays always get pretty interesting. The crowd is pretty much all college aged but it's a blast and the music is good as well with a DJ reeling. It's a good looking crowd usually as well. Especially after a couple games of pong. Other nights at Tres though have proven to be unsatisfying. A guy tried to charge me 11.50 for a Jager-bomb. What is this Vegas? But you honestly can't go wrong on Wednesdays here.

TOO many memories at this place. it always had a long line, but we knew the bouncers so it was never a problem. drinks were never a problem either cause i was close with stacey. always good music, and a diverse, hip crowd. sometimes they even had a live band. u could wear whatever u wanted and the sorority girls were always down for a good time! and the $1(or was it $2) tecate nights ruled!! we used to party it up with all the niners here. barlow and newberry were regulars, and jeff garcia got a dui because of this place! im missing san ho writing all these reviews...

  • Jake W.

This Place gets popping at night time, they have DJ's spinning every night i go there, cheap drink specials, and hot bartenders. I finally went there during the day last week for the sharks game and they had $10 bottomless beers!

  • Polina S.

It is beyond my comprehension how this place even has 2.5 stars. My one star is actually a negative one star it just doesn't show up that way. Somehow I got dragged here by my friend and his possy. So I wanted to write a lengthy review about how trashy and disgusting this place is, but then I read Archie G.'s review and I don't think I can do any better of a job expressing what a sh*t hole it is. So I will just end here by contributing my one star. Do not go here if you have a drop of class or refinement in you.

I went there last weekend with my little sis and her friends. The abrtender hooked us up since he knows my sister wich made our night even sweeter. One of the boucners was HOT and kept joking ariund with us all night :) I think the staff are pretty friendly!! Drinks were average prices and the place was interesting..we like to watch freaky peple and then laugh at them so we had a very amusing time. The music was awesome. Any bar that plays Journey is A+ in my book!

  • Erika M.

Ugh where do I begin with this place. I feel like each time I come here (or dragged here), it gets worse and worse. First few times I came here wasn't so bad. Of course it was days when it wasn't so packed. Most Fridays and Saturdays this place gets pretty packed with people. Just because the place is packed doesn't mean its fun! Those days are usually the worst in my opinion. There's a cover charge which is so not worth it. Drinks are kind of expensive, although strong. Bartenders are nice enough, but the bouncers can be d-bags sometimes. Dance floor area is way too small, but I think the worst is just the type of people that come here, aka ghetto. The guys in particular. The guys in here are so aggressive its not even funny. Its like they think they have every right to grab your hand, arm, butt, etc. And they can be guys you're not even talking to but just passing by to go to the restroom. I've had some fun moments here a few times, but lately this place has just been disappointing.

    (2)
  • Phung N.

This is an okay place to chill. I have no reason why they have a cover for when the sound system is whack. The bartenders don't even know how to mix drinks correctly! It took the 5+ minutes just to find someone who knew how to made the drink I requested.

  • Shaun C.

So I have to tell you, the last place I ever go to when going bar hopping is downtown San Jose..Until recently, when I started going to Tres on Thursday nights. You know, it wasn't that bad. People kept to themselves, no one was overly drunk, and everyone was having a good time..I haven't paid a cover yet and the bartender poured some strong drinks. The night was fine and the best part was the quesadillas after at the stand outside the bar. Overall, not too shabby, but at times I did feel like I was going to get stabbed...

My boyfriend and I were here to celebrate Halloween. We had a few drinks and were sitting at a table the whole time. Bartender was nice and made good drinks. Around midnight we decided to leave but I wanted to use the restroom first. My boyfriend waited for me in the hallway. When I came out I saw he was surrounded by a few bouncers and they were escorting him towards the back door. They said he was too drunk and had to leave. By the time I made it to the back alley I found him on the ground with a shocked look on his face. They literally pushed him to the ground. We had a few drinks but were in no way "TOO" drunk. Regardless, if my boyfriend was able to walk himself without any force to the exit door I don't see why at the last second they had to push him. His forehead was scraped and now today, the next morning, his head is swollen and sore. The force they used was completely uncalled for. He was just waiting by himself in the hall. It's not like there was a fight or anything. I see there has been several other similar reviews. We will not be back and do not recommend this place.

Can I go any lower on the stars? A place where the men of man jose hangs out. A place where if you're looking for a black eye and/or get mugged because you look better than them...buahahaha...place is way too packed for too many thugs and thugs lovers. Just look around the corner and you'll ask yourself how come half of san jose's police squad is outside? hmmmmm.

  • Aisha M.

This place was the shit when I was 21, that was a few years ago now. If you are into the younger crowd that doesn't know any better spots, go for it. I remember the $1 taco guy in the back, that was one of the highlights years ago...is he still back there?

definitely my favorite bar downtown! I'm here every weekend. the bartenders are always friendly and pour great drinks. if you don't know what you want, they make great suggestions or concoctions. prices are reasonable. music is usually OK but they should switch up the DJ a little bit. beer pong Wednesdays are the best. don't see why everyone is complaining about it being ghetto- there's way worse bars downtown San Jose.

  • Xtine M.

I love this bar on Wednesday beer pong nights! The crowd is diverse and better looking than the surrounding clubs! :)

when i choose the bar, i usually go to bar and grill over tres. tres has good food, but i think it's way overpriced for what it is. i could go to la vic and get cheaper food that tastes better. drinks have been hit and miss here. it just depends on the bartender. moon and albert always kick ass. overall this bar is okay. watch out for the ghetto patrons though.

Long line to get in, awkward set up (the "dance floor" is about the size of my bathroom), weird crowd. But on the plus side they had good music...

Not only do I not recommend 3 Gringos; I wholeheartedly ask fellow YELPERS to not give any business to this place. Once I walked by the nausea-inducing smell of the outdoor Tijuana type taco stand (I would not be surprised if 1 in 4 people who eat there get food poisoning) and got inside, I noticed mostly college kids and their girlfriends playing beer pong for hours on end. I bought my friends a couple of drinks (I wasn't drinking myself) and when I asked for my tab, the bartenders didn't have my VISA. They kept telling me to search my pockets as if I was some drunk fool who already received the card back. Finally, I spoke to a manager who managed to dig up my receipt. THESE GUYS HAD GIVEN MY CREDIT CARD TO SOMEBODY ELSE WHO HAD SIGNED IT AND TAKEN IT! I told the co-manager about the situation and he actually thought I was lying and that it was my signature on the receipt. The guy, who by the way is this 6 foot 9 ogre, did not take my complaint seriously and the most he did at the end is say "This shit happens all the time man; move on." If you're a YELPER, you probably believe to some degree that establishments should treat customers with respect and deal with their mistakes responsibly. When they don't, YELP is one avenue to expose them to other customers so that their business suffers in the future. If we're on the same page here, do me, yourself and others in the future a favor and avoid 3 Gringos at all costs. The YELP revolution is all about customer empowerment and there is no stronger statement, in my opinion, than blackballing a joint like this.

this place isnt the SHIT, BUT its does have some AMAZING TACOS/QUESADILLAS loved the meat! about the bar, well its always a mixed crowd, you will always see someone you know, so if your trying to get away from the same crowd, do not go here, if u haven't seen people in a long time, then here would be a place to go. drinks are drinks anywhere, the music has always been good when i have gone, and i think they have some sort of beer pong night, nit sure when. Lots of SJSU ppl!

    (4)
  • Anosha S.

Beer pong nights are fun (i think its wednesday, dont remember). Get there early to get a table because its annoying having to wait. They usually have good music too.

    (3)
  • Jared C.

hit this place up on a wednesday night with some coworkers. we had a great time at the beer pong challenge tables. beers were cheap, decent scenery and while we didn't have any, the food smelled really good. make sure you get here early for the beerpong. when we left at 11 or so, it was pretty packed.

    (4)
  • Mila M.

Like everyone else, I think Tres is super lame, but I have to admit that I actually miss it. If you went to SJSU, you'll see er'body and their momma. It'll bring you back to the dorm days! There is this one dude who is always there (we aren't going to put him on blast, but think "shrek") who really needs to quit partying there and move on with his life. He's been doing this for a friken decade. If he is reading this I have one message: don't ever try to holler at me again. It will never happen!

  • Jaime C.

So I'm reading some of the last reviews and I've actually only had good times at Tres Gringos! It's a downtown bar for pete's sake. What the hell do you expect. I go to drink, listen to some music, and shake my booty! Oh yes and let us not forget the mini burritos that are to die for! I could eat those suckers all night long. I've had no problems with the bouncers. The bartenders have been nothing but cool too. The complaint about it being packed...geez....if you've ever been to a bar in Newport or Huntington Beach then you'll know what packed really is! Oh and if it wasn't packed then who would want to go?? I want to people watch, not sit and stare aimlessly at the tv's on the wall.

    (4)
  • Madelyn Y.

I never really liked going here on weekends because it's super packed but if you go on a Wednesday, they have BEER PONG! If you don't know what beer pong is, PUHLEEZ go to Tres on a Wednesday to discover it's guilty goodness! Beer Pong = Ping Pong + Basketball...It's the latest way to get hammered! And Tres has multiple setups on Wednesday nights for your Fun n'Games fix. The competition overcame us when we went, and it's fun that can only be experienced instead of storytold. Then, you can go to SJ Bar n'Grill next door for their gooey awesome Wednesday 25cent chicken wing special!

I thought this was a cool little place to enjoy Happy Hour specials after work and before Music In The Park on a Thursday. Relatively cheap beer, cheap food, etc from 4 PM - 8 PM. Also, very convenient to the Santa Clara LRT station.

I was meeting some friends down town for a drink. I went and stood in line for about half an hour, I thought wow this place must be the place to be. I went up and it was $5 to get into this bar. When have you heard of paying to get into a bar. Doesn't even have a dance floor, just a bunch of people freaking each other all over the damn place. I stood at the bar waiting for the male asian bartender's attention and some big dood came up and just ordered and the bar tender completly ignored me. So, I walked around to the other side and got the attention of another bar tender who helped me. The drink was not that great and really pricey. I could only stand about half an hour in there and just decided to leave. I don't know why anyone would want to go here. This place is like a wanna be classed up ghetto bar.

  • Jonny A.

Went here this past Saturday. First of all, $10 to get in? I'm not a cheap-ass, I won't mind paying a fee if it's worth it, but $10 for Tres Gringos is hilarity. 1 AMF + 1 Tokyo Tea = $21. What in the hell? Again, this is TRES GRINGOS, come on. At least the drinks were pretty strong. I didn't even pay this much for the two same drinks at the Vault back a few years ago. Why is security constantly pushing me around? Ohhh, because the place is ridiculously packed and they are trying (terribly) to keep a walkway open IN THE CENTER OF THE DANCE FLOOR. They need to redesign this place -- perhaps have a walkway open on the right side near the tables and DJ booth entrance, I don't know, but the way it's setup now is dumb. Top it off with hearing "NY State of Mind" twice in the same hour and you've got me walking out of the place. Please get a better DJ -- it's annoying when the tempo/style is changing over and over. And TRUST ME, NOBODY wants to hear "Sweet Child o' Mine" or "You Give Love a Bad Name" remixed to a dance beat...or AT ALL for that matter -- wrong place, wrong time. I have heard that beer pong here on (I think) Wednesday nights are fun but I've never been.

Sure the bartender was super speedy, attentive and nice, and sure my girls and me got in for free, but what I want to know is, what kind of bar in San Jose does NOT serve Patron? I don't know about you, but personally I believe every bar (not just bars in San Jose) should have Patron. I was more than disappointed to find that out and also disappointed that the bouncer outside was convinced that the bar he worked for served Patron. And I'm not too sure if the "beach scene" exactly matches up to the crowd. If the owner of the bar is convinced that the "beach scene" is what he wants for his venue then he definitely should pile the place up with some bleach blonde shirtless surfer dudes because I don't know how I am supposed to feel about a bunch of Hennessey drinking thugs dressed in collared shirts that hang around a lifeguard post and beach balls. Something about that image just doesn't seem to make any sense.

I've been to Tres Gringos a few times, and it's always been pretty great. The decor is cute, the people are nice, and it a pretty big space so it's not over packed even with a lot of people there. The margaritas there are great. The music tends to be popular hip hop and not too loud. Nice place to start and end the night on a club crawl in San Jose.

I went here on a Thursday, I should have been to Motiff but wanted to do something different. Anyways me and my friends went into the club pretty dead. This place reminds me of a VERY WACK version of TIKI. We went to go smoke outside cause the smoking area is very small came back in we had to get carded again even though we have the stamps on our forarm. But the bouncers let the girls behind us in gave them hugs, and sweet talk them. Dress code is wack as well. I will Never go around this place ever again no matter how crackin it is.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla.
