paradiso deli is hidden just right off bird avenue! it reminds me of neto's but they don't bbq. i got the meatball sandwich and was tempted by the ravioli but will just try that next time. the sandwich was amazing! the meatball was perfectly seasoned with italian spices and topped with a slice of melted provolone cheese! it was relatively cheap too. the eggplant sandwich also looked good.. great hearty italian food for lunch! it's so tasty!!

This place. Is it a hipster vintage joint? Nope. Is it a place with trendy food like pork belly? Nope. Is it a place where people instagram their food? Nope. Is the service that fast? Nope. Is it a clean place? Nope. But Is the food good? Yup. Is it cheap? Yup. Is it a place where some of the patrons (and canned food) are older than the combined age of your group? Yup. It's a cheap and satisfying place with a lot of character. Don't come here for a refined experience. Be here to feel at home, to get in touch with a part of America that is hard to find in the Bay Area anymore as tech companies chase out real people... This is a place with real grit, having seen San Jose go through so many changes... at least the food here hasn't changed!

Sorry to say, had really expected a lot more out of this jaunt. The interior with exception of a small dining area in the back with many old photos and antiques, is tight quarters. Some of the areas seemed a bit dusty. The woman behind the hot counter was super friendly and very eager to tell you about the food or about the owner who comes in at 1am every day to begin prepping that days food. I got a couple of sandwiches for lunch and a couple of hot meals for dinner. The chicken parm sandwich was more like baked chicken with a lot of sauce. My husband missed the breading normally chicken parm arrives in. I had the mortadella and it was good but expected it to stand out from a mortadella can get anywhere else. The hot foods despite I can clearly see the pasta and ravioli are sitting in their sauces and maybe a bit too cooked. I was right hence the flavors of the ravioli and the sauces are definitely authentic long cooked. It is competitively priced, flavors on the hot meals authentic, some cookies from a well known place in Jersey. There are soda's, beer, wines for sale. Some pastas, oils, imported pasta sauces and tuna. I'm just not one of those quantity and price over something could probably find elsewhere in a more organized setting for a bit more money.

I had heard about Paradiso's sandwiches and thought I'd get in here. All the sandwiches are posted on the wall; I spotted my fav: Soppresata. I asked for Soppresata; was told they didn't have any. I promptly ordered Coppa. Your choice of cheese: I asked for Mozzarella. It was the pre-sliced square type mozzarella. The Italian Combo means 'everything on it': includes mustard, cheese, tomatoes and pepperoncinis. I asked for my peppers on the side. i looked around the store for other Italian goodies and saw some dried pasta's, wine, canned eggplants, pepperoncini's, etc. After ten minutes, my Coppa was ready. The bread was soft and tastey, the Coppa was ordered medium spicy and it was not spicy. It's a good sized sandwich for $6.05, enough for two light eaters. Chips are extra. Props to the owners: At the hot lunch counter, I said to the attendant, I hear this place has good sandwich's; she said they have been there since 1947. Kudos: the lady behind the hot counter came out to chat with us: she was polite and informed us, the marinara cooks 18 hours. My sandwich was tastey; if monochromatic: and lacking anything standout. Sorry to say that. Customer service at the deli counter: ok,if ambivalent. Decor: homey. Parking: plenty right next door and across the street. 2.0 stars for now, but since there is no half star, I'll bump them up to 3 stars. Will return for the ravioli and spaghetti hot lunches.

Wow this place is off the beaten path a bit. It's old school, im talking 50s ish. A bit cluttered but it smells wonderful inside. Sandwich area and tea up front, hot foods in the middle and a dining room in the back. There's some seating up front in a patio too. Got the Italian Combo as we were there on the later side and the hot food seemed to be pillaged and what was left looked desiccated.sandwich was decent as they use a certain Italian American producer in SF for their meats. Folks are pretty friendly and you can tell theyve been here for longer than ive been alive. I think the hot food needs a run at but id have to get here way earlier

This place has always been on my radar and I finally got a chance to try it today. I ordered the meatball sandwich with fried peppers and provolone. It comes with one giant (like the size of your fist) meatball, that they cut up. The whole sandwich was lacking flavor. I had to try to eat it quick because the bread quickly became soggy. By the time I finished the first half, the bread of the second half was so soggy that I just ate the meat. Keep in mind that I ate there, so I do not recommend taking it to go.

This little gem is hidden from most other deli restaurants. Located away from downtown it is on a side street west of downtown. There are two counters, one for hot sandwiches the other for cold. I had the meatball. It was a large meatball that they cut into many pieces for your sandwich. The meatball looks wonderful but lacked flavor. The bread is good but not fantastic like the fresh sourdough at other sandwich shops. The best thing is that it is a family owned business and is worthy of your business. There is a large selection of meats and pastas. Seating is available in the back of the deli. A good find.

To me, this is what a chain like Buca di Beppo is trying to imitate. It's an Italian family's kitchen. I mean literally, this is like being in someone's house (I think it was a house). I personally love the interior. It's like it hasn't changed in ages. Like you could visit your grandparents and find their house like this -comfortable and lived-in. Many people have walked in here over the years and they keep coming back. Some might be turned off by it because it's not like The Olive Garden or a franchise but I really find it charming and homey. The meatball I had today was huge. It was probably the size of a cue ball. I was blown away by the sauce. It was out-of-this-world. They don't use bread crumbs in their meatballs and they're fall-apart tender. Wowee-wow-wow. Good parking.

Meatball sandwiches! If you're looking for a tasty, no frills, meatball sandwich, come to paradiso. Don't be alarmed when you walk in and see a bunch of things in your way. The lady saw I had a confused look on my face and she knew I was a first timer. She nicely told me how it worked. The front area had cold sandwiches, the middle area had hot food and sandwiches, and the back area is the dining section. Throughout the store is a bunch of groceries and such too. It does feel a bit tight and dark inside, so don't be turned off by that. I went to the back area to look at the hot menu. The meatball sandwich menu item is actually on a piece of paper. There are a few ways to get it. We got the regular and the ones with fried peppers and provolone cheese. The sandwiches are huge! They are about 6-7 dollars each and can be sharable. I would have been fine with half, but I tried to finish and was able to eat another 1/4. The sandwiches are a bit messy but they are good. The worker puts some sauce on the bread and then a huge meatball. She then cut the meatball into small chunks so it spread across the bread better. Added more sauce and toppings (like peppers and cheese, if you got them) and wraps it up. Parking lot is a bit tight right next to their store, but they also have a lot across the street that is bigger.

I've eaten here many times before. Every time I've gotten a veggie sandwich. Each time I get a huge mound of food full of delicious. The cashier (I believe her name Is Teresa) is a lovely woman who always makes me feel welcome. I look forward to getting their other items. One criticism I would give is that it's hard not to question their cleanliness. I've never gotten or felt sick from there but the place could use a good cleaning. Otherwise I will eat there many more times in the future.

I heard great things about this place. Unfortunately it did not live up to the hype. The sauce looked old. The ravs were over cooked and mushy. The meatballs did not have much flavor and bread became mushy very quickly. I was not able to even finish half my food. The people that worked there, I'm assuming the owners, moved very slowly and used the microwave to heat up some of the food. Grant they seemed like the nicest people, but you had to yell your order at them a few times for them to hear it, and then there was still a chance the order would not come out right. I'm used to eating at La Villa where the food comes out freshly cooked, hot and with prompt customer service. I will not be coming back.

Pretty decent sandwich for 6 bucks and some change. They put whatever you want on it. The reason for 3 stars is the grumpy kid making the cold sandwiches. I've tried to be nice to him every time I've been in, and he's mad at the world. Won't even greet you or ask what you want. Just stares at you like you just banged his mom until you break and give him your order. Scary dude.

What a nice hidden gem! It's much bigger than you would imagine. It's heaped with character too. Great decor, and love that it's a family establishment. Their ravioli is so good. LOVED the meatballs. Good sized portions. I was able to eat the leftovers later in the day, and it still tasted great. I am definitely going back.

This review if for their cannoli only!!! I came here in my search for the best cannoli in the South Bay. I tried their cannoli on a couple occasions to see if I just came on an off day, but the flavor of the cream is just not very sweet. The cream should be nice and silky, but it seems crumbly - almost like plain ricotta is usually.

I had a craving for some delicious Italian sandwiches while I was pregnant, but totally regret actually consuming the food here. This place could easily be on Kitchen Nightmares! I walked towards the back to get the hot food, and since it was Friday, I ordered their speciality, Italian steak sandwich. An older gentleman took the cooked Italian steak from a container and put it on top of a dirty, unsanitary board where I could tell other meat had been and had fallen into the cracks. He very slowly cut the meat while talking to his friends. Then he wiped the board with a dirty rag before he put another Italian steak to cut for the second sandwich. It probably took about 15 minutes for this process. I was a bit perturbed, but I continued to stay positive because of all the good reviews. We also ordered one cannoli and a drink, and we paid something like $25, which I thought was high for what we actually got. The sandwiches were so gross, flavorless, and barely warm. Both the brown and marinara sauce were not tasty. They brought out the cannoli, and when we saw it, there were two ants crawling on it! We were disgusted! The dining room was dusty with lots of knick-knacks about. I decided then and there that if they couldn't be bothered to clean the shopping and dining area, the kitchen was probably not clean either and that's why there were ants on our food. It was incredibly careless for them to serve food with ants and I'm sure there are sanitation issues with the meat they serve. I really hope people read this and decide not to patronize a disgusting place like this! Visit La Villa on Lincoln Ave. instead. Much cleaner, tastier, and better customer service.

I'm actually quite picky about Italian, specifically when you consider there are several types of Italian food...as far as I'm concerned. There's Italian...mostly Franchise restaurant style fair...or what you find in cans of Chef Boyardee...it's basically bland tomato sauces with over cooked noodles, etc. There's too much of this type around if you ask me. There's real Italian...as in what they eat in Italy...lots of fresh ingredients, local prepared meats, etc...very delicious...the inspiration for what we've come to know here in the U.S., but it's not the comfort food we know here...it's actually quite refined and higher up the culinary scale. Finally, there's Americanized Italian. This is what real Italian cooks, 1st or 2nd generation immigrants, using what they had available here in America turned into that amazing comfort food that I love. Super flavorful red sauces, wonderful meaty dishes, sausages, salami, olives, etc., delicious...filling...awesome. Paradiso is Americanized Italian. When you walk into the joint, the smell hits you like a brick wall...deliciousness that instantly makes your mouth salivate...and all you can think about is getting a chair, fork in hand and plate in front of you. That's basically what I did...I ordered the meatball sandwich waited a few minutes (fast service!) and the plate no sooner hit the table when I tore into it. The sandwich lasted mere seconds because as soon as I took my first bite...my stomach took control of my mouth and hands! Anyway, cutting a long review short, this is a great American Italian food place that I will make an effort to return to again and again. Just remember, the place is a bit ramshackle...sort of like walking into your Grandmothers old house filled to the brim with memorabilia and nick-knacks.

Woo'd by the great reviews, also fully aware of the less-than-stellar reviews. Interested to investigate as my own grandparents also had an Italian Deli (but not like this one, as it turns out). Arrived and instantly observed what the detractors were on about. It is definitely grungy, old, been rode hard -kinda place. I overlooked the "ambience" as I walked back to the order counter, where I was the end of an 6-person line. I watched the old timer slowly slice the fat from some roast beast headed for a sandwich. Slowly. Methodically. In no hurry whatsoever. Trimming. More trimming. Nice attention to detail, but I realized that I would not be encountering my own sandwich for at least an hour, they way things were paced. I quickly departed for La Villa where they move quite a bit quicker.

The sandwich I had was okay, it was the italian combo. The sandwich was made quickly which was nice, but then the older couple was working the register which obviously took a while once my sandwich reached them to be paid for. The place has a very old and a bit of a dirty look to it, not the most inviting place. I would definitely suggest going to Bertucelli's instead, much preferred that place. Has the same feel and food, but much better.

Atmosphere was dingy and nasty; service was friendly but oh so slow, and the food was below average. I'm sorry La Villa, I will never stray from you again.

The place is outdated, food was ok, there are other places with better ambiance. Family ran and operated, so the place could use some updating. Nice place to pick up a sandwich, don't expect too much when you come through the door, it's a family operation that has been around for along time.

The meatballs are great and they put a lot of sauce in there as well such that it tastes like a sloppy joe. The marinara sauce is so-so and the cheese and peppers that come in their famous deluxe meatball sandwich are fairly run of the mill. Their bread wasn't very fresh and it was sort of disappointing even after it was toasted. The bread has difficulty holding up under so much sauce, and at the end of the sandwich, it pretty much gets smooshed into itty bitty pieces. The major downside to this place is that it takes forever to get your order. The owners here seem to be in their 70's or something and they definitely aren't in a hurry to help anyone, even when the line gets to be 10 deep. Our hero literally waited 15 minutes to order and get his food with just two people ahead of him. Paradiso has its own retro charm and a certain degree of authenticity about it, but it's certainly not worth a special trip. PROS: - The decor is eclectic and it feels like you're eating in a 1950's deli. It's a time warp back to simpler days. - Pretty large sandwiches for a decent price. CONS: - There doesn't seem to be much turnover in the grocery store portion in front and some of the items even looked dusty. - The hours are fairly limited to lunch and "linner" time. - Service is agonizingly slow.

Yum! What a cute little mom and pop shop! I had the Eggplant Parmesan sandwich (eggplant, parmesan, and mushroom for $7.95). The interior is quaint and homey decorated. My friends both had meatballs sandwiches which they mentioned that the meatballs were very flavorful. I asked for some foil to wrap my sandwich by myself. It was too big for me to finish. The owner was so sweet and he said that he would take care of it for me. The food is delicious and the service is wonderful, I would definitely come back again. **Gotta check out the picture of the Cuucuzo festival hanging above the wall heater. How cool is that!

My friend and I came here for lunch on a weekday around 1pm. Luckily, we were only 3rd in line. You should expect a wait b/c it's a popular spot. Walk in to the store and you'll pass the first counter on the left to get to the second counter where you order for lunch. The menu is kind of all over the place on the wall, but you'll figure it out! The elderly man got my order ready while the lady rang us up. I was paying with a credit card so the lady told me to have a seat and she would bring my card out back to me. I ended up getting an eggplant parm sandwich. My colleague got a meatball one. It was much bigger than I expected and we both couldn't finish (which is unusual for us). But my sandwich was pretty good. I'd come back to get that sandwich or try others. I have to come back to try the tiramisu at the very least! Signs say to leave your dishes on the table at the end of the meal.

Paradiso is an old school spot with a loyal customer base. The owners are definitely very old, but seem very sweet. However, it takes quite a while for them to make your food here, so only come if you have some time to spare. We came in for a late lunch on a Saturday (around 1pm), and there were a few people eating in and also in line. It took close to 20 minutes for us to order and get our food, and we were able to grab a table in the back. I agree with other Yelpers about the smell- there was a definite musty odor or something along those lines which was pretty noticeable. They have two counters when you walk in to order from- the one closest to the door is for cold sandwiches, and the one other counter is for hot sandwiches and the items in the steam trays (different pastas and side dishes). We ordered: -Meatball Sandwich w/Provolone Cheese and Italian Peppers ( yelp.com/biz_photos/para… ): Ok. The bf liked this one more than I did. I though the meatball was a little soggy, and I didn't like the spices they used for the meatball. Definitely a messy sandwich! -Italian Sausage Sandwich w/Provolone Cheese and Italian Peppers ( yelp.com/biz_photos/para… ): I liked tihs one more than the bf, since I liked the spices they used in the sausage, and the sausage had more structure to it. I thought the sandwiches were good, but not so great that I am motivated to come back anytime soon. I would be interested in trying some of the cooked items in the steam trays, but everything just looked really old and not quite clean in there, so I'm not sure how sanitary everything is. There is street parking available in front of Paradiso, and also a small private lot.

Not sure wut the hype is all about. Ive tried 3 delicateseens so far and this one is fairly avg to me. I didnt get to try most o the things so I may hafta stop by for another try but my first impression was good but not 4-5 stars good. Food- Italian Steak Sandwich: This is a sandwich with chunks o breaded steak. You can opt to have either the marinara sauce with it or the gravy mushroom sauce. I tried it with the red sauce but I wish i got half n half or maybe even mixed em together. It was pretty good and the portion was decent. Its 9 bux for a sandwich so at least it was filling. I also wish it had cheese/mozzarella but I guess you hafta add that on separately. Overall I thought the sandwich was good, but I definitely wouldnt drive out o my way to get this again.

This is the kind of place where you just want someone to *bring* you a sandwich from Paradiso, because actually *getting* the sandwich is a tremendous chore. Granted, I worked at Togo's as a teenager and have certain sandwich-making speed expectations that come from being regularly timed, but the sweet little old man at Paradiso's is the slowest sandwich maker EVER. The first time I went, I ordered 4 italian sausage sandwiches with peppers and onions. All the same, no special orders. He took the bag of the bread, opened it, took out one roll, laid the roll on the counter, then gingerly added the sausage, the sauce, the peppers and onions, 2 slices of cheese, and then slowly wrapped it up. Then he went back to the bag of bread, got out one more roll, and carefully repeated the process. Then again. And again. So I was irritated that it took 20 minutes for me to leave the shop with 4 sandwiches. But then we got home and ate the sandwiches, and all of my irritation went right out the window. They were extremely tasty, and I felt like a judgmental shrew for being so impatient. (My kids confirmed that. ;-) We've been back many times since. Just know that it will not be quick, but it will be worth it.

Old skool like you are walking back in time, into your grandma's kitchen. So charming, especially in downtown San Jose. The owners are adorable and completely fit the decor. God only knows how hard they have been working running this place all these years! This review is for a side of meatballs. I'm on a Protein diet :) they were awesome. Very authentic, great sauce, very savory. Not greasy at all, and very light and fluffy. The cc issue everyone mentions was not a big deal, I was running up and walking out in a matter of minutes. Me and a co worker decided to try this place for the first time for lunch. The meatball jalapeño sandwich was heaven!!! This place feels like your sitting in your grandmas house eating her homemade meatball. We will definitely be coming back and trying more of there dishes.

I see all of the talk about the meatball sandwich, if you like that try the meatball jack jalapeno sandwich. Monterey jack cheese with the raw jalapenos, roasted jalapenos probably would be better, gives this sammie a different flavor profile that's a must have! Here's one of the greatest secrets there, maybe I shouldn't be exposing this treasure to all, it's the friday only special of their famous italian breaded steak sandwich. I get mine with gravy in it and it is one of my favorites sandwich of all time! You'll find this in the "hot meal" section in the middle of the deli. They offer other great meals like stuffed peppers, lasagna, roast beef, etc. I've never been dissapointed in any meal that I've tried there. They have seating in the back as well as the front and side of the building. Nice quite street to eat with minimal distractions.

Casual eating and homemade everything. I've only been once, but the next time I'm in town I'm making it a priority to get back here. Try the ravioli. Or meatballs. Or whatever the nice lady suggests. Whatever you do, don't come in if you're not hungry. I have to warn you, however, there is an autographed photo of Nancy Grace behind the counter. It takes some powerfully good pasta to allow me to keep my appetite with her creepy face staring back at me. I came back to check out a meatball sandwich. I chose the meatball sandwich with Gorgonzola cheese. There were about two to three meatballs that were smashed down to fit into the sandwich. The Gorgonzola cheese was topped on the meatballs, then the sandwich was microwaved to melt the cheese. The first bit was inspiring. The cheese was creamy and hot. The smashed meatballs were good and invigorating. I could not stop eating this sandwich. It was messy but well worth it. The service as usual was attentive and friendly. No regrets, as usual.

Paradiso may be Italian for "paradise/heaven" but I wouldn't exactly say the food is otherworldly. It's definitely tasty though. Reading through the suggestions on Yelp, I decided to have the Meatball Sandwich with Provolone and Peppers. (Actually, they have a standard Meatball Sandwich and a Meatball Sandwich with Jack as well). The "meatball" is more like a giant loaf of meat that's cut up into pieces. I wish they would have toasted the bread and made it crispy though to make it even more yummy. There's a pretty wide selection of items on the menu actually and I'm looking forward to going back and trying something new! What makes this place a winner is the environment. To quote the great Marshawn Lynch (yes, the former Cal great. Go Bears!): "I love the ambiance, I love the décor, I spend a lot of time thinking about which I like more...the ambiance, or the décor." It's seriously like a blast from the past. This place must have been open since the 40s/50s or something. Maybe the owners have just been holding onto these old decorations and sauce containers from back then though Oh and the owners! They are this sweet adorable old couple. (I just think old people are cute? Aren't they?) The husband still makes the sandwiches himself and the wife still runs the cash register. BOTTOM LINE: Food may not be 5* awesome, but it is good and I will go back again. The cozy friendly environment makes it a definite winner!

Located in the middle of a really ghetto street is this tiny store with a long layout. You park in their lot and walk into the store where you will find yourself in front of some deli thing and some store shelves. Walk in some more and you will find the place where you can actually order food. The selection here seems very limited but that's often a good thing. The spaghetti and meatball came with extra thick spaghetti and some really good meatball. The meatball as I was told by the owner was featured on some sort of TV show? It was very tender and cooked evenly through. The tomato sauce did not have any hint of bitterness you sometimes get but was instead sweet from the tomatoes (or sugar?) The place is very homey which kind of shocked me since I wasn't really prepared to go to some place like this. It is good enough that I would like to come back while dodging all the bullets to get to the front door and order some of those stuffed bell peppers, lasagna (thursday only), steak sandwich (friday only), etc.

The meat was a bit stringy and chewy at parts. really wish they toasted their bread. it was so soggy... wanted to like it more, wanted to give it more stars...but I have to be honest, probably won't be back. it's not stomach-ache worthy.. This place feels like eating in your grandparent's living room. So cozy and the back area where you can just sit, eat, and watch TV is great! The owners are super nice and will answer any questions that you have. I got the eggplant sandwich which was good but got a little mushy after a while. Should have just eat the eggplant part and saved myself the extra calories! Boyfriend got the steak sandwich! Yum, I must say that his was better and I had food envy the entire time! I wanted lasagna at first but he said they only have it on certain days, must come back to try that and the cannolis next time!

Places like these are a dying breed... Had a salami sandwich and a side salad for lunch recently. The price can't be beat (a little over $6), and the food was good. The meat was supposed to have a kick to it, but I couldn't detect it... The ladies making the sandwiches were very nice, and the grandmotherly lady manning the register was an absolute doll. I wish I had something more original to say than to hype the meatball sandwich, but when you see a meatball larger than a baseball you may think you've stumbled upon the 8th wonder of the world. Let me walk you through this: First, you'll pull up to a run down building that screams anything but paradise -- avoid knocking over the A-Frame street sign boasting "Best Italian Sandwiches". You'll look for a white painted steel gate with an OPEN sign hanging. The dozen or so steel gates and fences may cause alarm, but ignore your urge to turn and run. This place is what I call the mullet style deli layout (retail in front, restaurant in back). You are not in the wrong place. Slink past the jarred olives and dangling meat to the food counter. They start with a delicate italian roll split and covered on both sides with homestyle marinara sauce. Then the meatball is rolled out -- this is when you resist the urge to say words you can never unsay: "It's too big to fit in there." Don't worry, they'll cut it meatloaf-style to ensure the coveted meat to bite ratio, add more sauce, and layers of cheese (if ordered and why not you've already come this far). Halved, warmed and double-bagged for to-go orders. All that's left is to enjoy the juicy, crumbly meat sandwich drenched in sauce and oozing with cheese. A five-star feast, but minus one for the hours. Sorry, my fine tuned meat clock often goes off at 4:33 and they close at 4:30. Suggested order for diet conscious folks: EAT HALF.

Loved Loved Loved!!! I had a stuffed Bell Pepper, Giant Meat Ball and a side salad. Was it the best Italian food I've ever eaten? - well no but it did hold it's own and definitely tasted homemade! What i really loved here was the family atmosphere - you really feel the warmth and love. The dining room is like sitting in your Great-Aunt's Living Room - including an old organ and various household decorations. Fun, Kitchy and just plain lovely...I will definitely go back!

Great place!! I had a turkey, ham and cheese and my girlfriend had a bowl of spaghetti. She's not a very big eater and I got a bottomless put, so to speak, and we both left there completely satisfied. It was reasonably priced and the atmosphere felt like home. Definitely going back.

After reading all the reviews here on Yelp - we finally went and tried it. And .. wow. The meatball sandwich is so damn yummy - you would be hard pressed to find a place that could replicate it let alone find one better. The building on the outside is kind of weird .. like a cross between a house and a tiny corner market with a couple tables outside. Walking in the front door it is like what I had always pictured an old skool Italian Deli to look like. As you walk in the front door to the left is the front counter/cold sandwich area and to the right and along the wall is the grocery area. Walk a little further past the cold counter on the left is the hot sandwich and food area. The menu is on the wall along with the specials. The little old ladies behind the counter reminded me of my childhood friend's little old Italian grandmother. I believe we got called honey and dear as well. Which you know .. that little bit of love always makes food taste better :) All three of us ordered the hot meatball sub with mozzarella on it. MmMmMmm. It was way better and more filling than we could have imagined. I love this place and look forward to going back again soon and trying something different :)

Grandma/Grandpa run spot that has an awesome deli, daily specials, and great eat in or carry out. The first time I came here, there was a man cleaning in the back of the kitchen singing showtunes as loud as possible. I thought that had made my day, until I got home to eat my eggplant part, which made my week! The decor will keep you smiling if there is ever a wait.

The meatball sandwich is so good. Its one giant meatball cut up to provide an optimal meatball to bite ratio. Soft bread instead of a crusty french loaf. I like to get the version that comes with pickled jalapenos and jack cheese. The owners are really friendly and you can tell there are a lot of regulars. Today I visited Paradiso Deli.... what a delight. It truly was like stepping back in time. The aromas that filled the space as I entered the front door were fantastic. I was greeted by more than one person with a smile and a friendly "hello, can I help you". This is a well established family run Italian deli. I arrived just a little before the lunch hour and the locals were already filtering in. My take-out order had been called in ahead of time, but when I got there and took a look at wheat else there was, I ordered meatloaf (as well as raviolis) to take home for dinner. This was a treat and I will go back... even though I live 25 miles away.

Great homemade Italian Food made from pioneers who've been at it for a long time. I've had the ravioli, meat ball, and sausage (not all at once sitting). Everything tastes great! This place is a small deli-type shop that has a counter for ordering food and a small indoor seating area. You can tell this place has been around for a long time. I must admit it does not look appealing from the outside but if you give it a try it is well worth the gamble!

i am 100% sure that i will go back here and try other stuff. For my first trip here today, i tried the meatball, jalapeno, & jack cheese sandwich at the suggestion of the lady behind the counter. It was a good sized sandwich....i should say, it was a good sized meatball. We watched while she was making it, she just dumped one massive meatball on the bun and then chopped it up. She then took an entire jalapeno, chopped that up and threw it in, then cheese and sauce. Size was great, flavor was good, but not great. I feel like something was missing that i can't put my finger--it just didn't have that wow factor for me and the person that i went with agrees. To put it another way, it was a good sandwich, but i the next time that i go there, i won't order the same thing. The pricing was really good, stuff is pretty cheap for the amount of food that you get. We were chatting with the gal who was making our sandwich, apparently this place has been open for 60 years, so they must be doing something right. I am determined to find out what that is. They have a pretty large menu, so this could take some time.

What a crazy, fun, throwback little place! Shelves stocked with odds and ends you won't find in the supermarket - a bevy of booze extracts for baking, anyone? how about seltzer pellets? - and a good hot food selection. Disorganized certainly, hard to figure out the first time you go in, but with derelict's charm. The kind of place you're happy to have in your neighborhood. When we asked the older woman behind the counter what she recommended, two older men at a table behind us barked out, "get the lasagna!" I took their advice and got the lasagna lunch, which came with a side of ravioli (my choice), garlic bread, and an salad with judiciously-applied dressing. Extremely tasty, neither overly cheesy or overly saucy, but very filling. The ravioli were good enough that I'll consider getting some to cook at home in the future, too. And the delicious meat sauce, om nom nom. On a down note, my roommate had the meatball sub and was supremely disappointed. He said it was bland and mushy, and that the bread was extremely soggy even just a moment after we got the food. Looking at the other reviews here, I wonder if it wasn't a fluke, or if he got the tail-end of old leftovers. Given the good reviews on here, I'd try one again and see if it's a one-off or the standard 'ball.

Slow -- but delicious. Completely old school - walking out of this place made me feel like I was walking out of 1942. If you can can get past its exterior and outrdated and slow but careful service - then you are in for a delicious treat. My wife and I had it for lunch and we both agreed that we'll be going back. She had the meatball with mozzarella sandwich and I tried a bite - it was messy but so soft and great and extremely tasty. I had the chicken parm sandwich and it was fantastic. Again the bread is so soft that it must be baked fresh there. The chicken was fresh and off the bone - and then smothered in marinara. MMMMM The sandwiches are hearty and weigh quite a bit - and are definitely filling. We topped off the lunch with a canoli - definitely hand-made and definitely delicious. Overall - a great lunch spot but don't go if you are in a rush.

Don't be fooled by the old exterior and vintage furnishings inside, this place has some serious eats. The meatball sandwich is definitely a winner. The meat is so soft and tender, and the sauce is perfect. If you're a fan of the meatball sammich, you gotta try the one at Paradiso's. The ravioli is probably the most tender I've had. It was the perfect texture. It was soft but but not mushy. I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I found the perfect complement to my meatball sandwich. Make sure you come hungry, because that sandwich will fill you up!

I knew I was in for something special. The owner Tony was one of the nicest people I have met in a very long time. Paradiso Delicatessen is located on Auzerais Ave next to the Los Gatos Creek and beside OSH. I have lived in this area for a while and have never noticed it until I moved to my new place on the same street. On the way home one evening we noticed it and thought that run down little hole in the walls like that probably have the best food in the area. We were absolutely correct. The building itself is a rather old looking house and there are power lines running through the side yard which is now the parking. Before we even got in, i saw a policebike outside and knew that the food was going to be great. When you enter, the place you can tell the place is old. There are a variety of Italian wines and sundries. The front of the house has a deli where you can choose from over 75 different sandwiches (we had the Italian Combo and the smoked turkey) the middle of the house has a warm section (lasagna, eggplant parmesan, spaghetti, raviolli, etc.) and the back of the house is the dining room. I haven't tried the hot food yet, but I can't wait to do so. It all looked and smelled delicious. The Sammys were fantastic. The meats were all tasty, the breads were all fresh and the people helping you out made some really great suggestions for our sammys. We drooled all the way home in anticipation of eating them and moaned with every bite. We'll definitely be going back there. I recommend others give it a try as well. If you are used to the blandness of Subway, give these a try, you won't be disappointed.

Finally tried Paradiso after months of meaning to, and I was happy that it lived up to the hype. The descriptions of the outside and interior set-up that others have written are totally accurate, and it is definitely like taking a step back in time. I had the meatball sandwich and my bf had the italian sausage sandwich -- both were super yummy, but I think the meatball was better. I can't wait to try some of the other amazing looking things that were behind the counter! Also, to add to the experience, everyone working there was incredibly friendly. Any place where a cute little woman behind the counter calls you "hon" is definitely worth coming back to :)

Best place ever! Definitely a San Jose gem. This place is comparable our better than la villa in willow Glen. Definitely a blast from the past and that's what I love about it. Old deli style with half market half cold and hot foods. Family owned and the staff are so nice you feel like you have known them for years. Plenty of eating space inside in the back but get here early as it gets really busy during lunch time peak hours.

What a find! One of the best sandwich places I have ever been to. They let me try their mac salad and potato salad.. Let me tell you this, I hate Macaroni salad, never been a fan till I tried theirs, i will be back for more. I had the pleasure of meeting everyone there, and they were all very friendly and gave me a brief run down of the deli, The owners are the old couple and the 83 year old man gets up at 1am every morning to make everything there, Which is amazing. Walking into this place, it reeked of authenticity and a passion for Italian cuisine. The store is run by homely, casual people. The walls are decorated with keepsakes they've collected from ages past and its awesome! The counter closest to the door manages sandwiches, and the counter further down handles pasta/ravioli and all of that good stuff. I myself had the Italian combo as advised by the staff ("try the italian combo and you'll fall in love" - unassuming man at the counter) and my friend had the roastbeef sandwich (hot). My god, that sandwich was supreme. It was so stacked and bursting with flavor that I felt like I stole from these nice, old people. I mean 6.75 for this? So goooood. They also have cured meats, cheeses, and all other goods for sale should you ever see the need to try to reproduce their sandwiches at home. I am pretty sure that most people that walk out of this awesome shop are almost never EVER disappointed. 4.5/5.0.

Paradiso's Deli in San Jose, California, has the best Lasagna & Meatball's I have ever tasted. I just love this place. It may look like a hole in the wall, but walk in side and you immediately feel the old Italian corner market feel and charm, that's kept them in business with San Jose locals since the 1940's. My only gripe is that they only serve Lasagna on Thursday's, and about a year ago they started serving it on Saturday's, and that they are only open for Lunch. Now if they only made Gluten free lasagna, I would eat more of it, or better yet, let us all know their secret recipe, so I can try and make it myself for dinner.

Believe the hype. The food here is very good. I walked in with Lil C on a hot summer day and as soon as we walked in I felt the nice cool air. That brought a big smile to my face. Old school places like this will usually not have a/c and if they do it sucks. For being in a hidden area they also had a pretty large parking lot. The staff kindly greeted us as we walked in and I asked about the Italian Steak sandwich special on the board. The gal told me it was their most popular. This was my first time here so I decided to give it a try. While it was being prepared I looked around and noticed a lot of homemade goodies. From the outside this place looks like a small old house but inside it's a lot bigger than you'd think with lots of seating towards the back. I went back to the counter as patrons walked in and they all asked for the Italian Steak sandwich and the gal told them I had purchased the last one. They were like "Nooooooooooooooooo". I asked them if it was really that good and they said "hell yes". I told them it was my first time so they told me they didn't feel that bad that I had gotten the last one. I thought that was funny but it shows you the kind of neat place this is with it's devoted customers. Then I believe the owner and his wife overheard what we were talking about and they gave me a little lesson on the history of the place. I ended up ordering a Cannoli which the owner made for me on the spot. I took the sandwich home and I was drooling the moment I saw it. Thick, juicy and it smelled freakin' good. As soon as I took a bite I knew exactly why these were so popular. The flavor of the breaded steak and the sauce was so good I've been craving it ever since. It was filling but I managed to chow down the whole thing cuz it was that good. The only downside is that the Italian Steak sandwiches are only available on Fridays. The Cannoli was also good but I couldn't finish it because I was stuffed. I like this mom and pop place and I hope they stay around. Great meatball subs, meatballs are a bit spicy too. However the old time charm fails due to extreme disorganization. The old couple at the hot food area are super nice, but the younger woman who seems like she thinks she running things is a huge downer. Instead of charm she is mean and short with customers. Its not the customers' fault if the store is disorganized and you have to order certain foods at certain locations and nothing is marked. I would go back, but only if I had a lot of spare time to stand in line.

I am partial to mom and pop places and this place is one of them. Pasta stand-bys like spaghetti and lasagna cant be beat. The sausage needs special mention. My favorite is the eggplant Parmesan. Tucked away in a quiet industrial-residential mixed neighborhood, Paradiso serves up some damn good hot pastrami or meatball and cheese sandwiches. HEADLINE: Existential experience ... but going "Back to the Future" ain't always a great trip I dunno ... have I become such a food snob that I can't enjoy the way food was cooked 40 or 50 years ago? This moment of self-realization and the absurdity of life has me feeling like I'm in the middle of scene written by Kierkegaard or Nietzsche for crying out loud. OK, in deference to the previous Yelpers who just swooned over this little place, I'm going to keep this short and sweet ... but, hardly painless. My Italian Sausage Sandwich ... sausage ... while of a good portion and moisture, was way over-seasoned with either fennel or tarragon or something but it overpowered everything else ... sauce ... while nicely moistening the bun and sandwich, was ridiculously over-salted ... my sodium mg. count for the day was shot after the third bite ... sandwich bun ... while white, and soft, and sauce-absorbing, offered not a single additional attribute nor contribution in terms of taste or texture. My small side of Beef Ravioli ... reminded me instantly of my childhood years of eating Beefaroni out of a can ... the pasta was simply mush (what others have described as "pillowy soft" t'was, indeed, that) ... meat filling ... forgettable, plebeian, mundane ... and the same sauce used in my grinder is what my raviolis are now swimming in ... the sodium meter goes off the scale, and I'm grasping for my bottle of Lisinopril to stave off angina ... or a cranial aneurysm ... or both. The decor of the place ... yes, I agree, it's like a time warp back into a simpler day, one of neighborhood deli's and grocery stores that were the foundation (in so many ways ... socially, commercially, economically, even from a charitable perspective in the real dark days) of many a small town ... But there's kitsch .... and then there's just plain crap that's been accumulated over decades ... I guess Soren and Friedrich would call me a food prick because I now find myself preferring: Sauces that are light and elegant and multifaceted, not a salt brine Breads that will fight back a little with an artisan crust and a personality, not something more resembling packing material or surgical gauze Pasta that is done al dente, not some gelatinous globule that my great grandmother could gum to death without her dentures Ravioli filled with something that actually contributes a flavor or nuance to the dish ... something to excite the palate I guess I'm beyond my childhood days of the Fifties and Sixties where Wonder Bread, Chef Boyardee, and half a shaker of salt on everything was the norm and good ... Paradiso is a homely cafeteria-style restaurant tucked in the back of a rather well-worn deli, situated in the midst of warehouses and auto shops, and patronized by lots of (literal) blue-collar workers. It wouldn't have been out of place in a 40s-era newsreel about the Depression. They serve hearty Italian food, but I don't know if I'd consider it *good* Italian food. I almost felt that the emphasis of the food was more to fill the stomachs of its patrons cheaply, rather than serving a tasty meal. They definitely don't go easy on the carbs -- the lasagna pasta and spaghetti were probably the thickest I've ever had from a restaurant. This isn't a good thing, seeing as it left me feeling like I was eating a giant pasta cake. To me, the 4.5-star average rating of Paradiso is a definitely optimistic. I hear their sandwiches are pretty decent so I may come back for those, but I'll pass on their hot food. It is cheap though, I'll give them that!

Paradiso is a little Italian Delicatessen located in a converted home smack dab in the middle of an industrial section of San Jose and just down the block from my work. According to the sweet old lady who made my sandwich, the joint is family owned and has been around since 1947. Loves it! They make their pasta from scratch and have an extra special chicken cacciatore that is only made about twice a year! The popular sandwich here is the Italian combo and their cheese selection is unbelievable. I decided to opt for a smoked turkey and fontina on a crunchy sourdough roll. Although large, the sandwich hit the spot, and the ingredients were fresh. Next time I oughtta try their hot food section and homemade pasta next time! BTW: The balls here are LARGE! ...'meat' balls that is. :P

Forgive me God, for I will be sinning, within the next 5 minutes of writing this review..... I hate to do this. I really really do. But it must be done. IT MUST! As I write this review, I imagine that sweet woman working the cash register, with her genuine smile, and her friendly staff. I felt touched (not in that way). LOVE was put into that plate.... but love won't come out of this review... The food: - The salad was just a bag of greens, with a huge glob of ranch dressing. It wasn't tossed and I didn't want to finish it. The lettuce was very wet, which diluted the dressing and made it less appetizing. It was a watery mess. - The ravioli was just......sad. I felt like I was eating a bowl of chef boyardee. Bland, bland and more bland flavors. The meat wasn't of good quality and the pasta was soggy. - The meatball was just.....a disaster of epic proportions. The meat was wet, soggy, and mushy. Generally, overcooking a piece of meat would result in dryness. That's the opposite of Paradiso. The meatballs must have been brewing in that sauce for hours which gave it that distinct texture. Overall, the food here was not good at all. I mean sure, the decor is very interesting. It's very comfy (they also like the 49ers!) and the service was very sweet and friendly. They also have various jarred goods, cheeses, and other deli selections. The prices are exceedingly cheap and you get a lot of food for your money. Sorry guys, I hate to crash your party. Believe me, I feel bad for writing this review. Writing this review made me feel like I just kicked an old woman in the stomach, and threw soggy meatballs all over her hopes and dreams. Fuck. I give Paradiso a 2.1 out of 5.

Came here the other day for lunch. Ordered the Meatball and Jalapeno sandwich. Just a word of caution, if you're in a hurry, you might want to come earlier when there aren't as many people. The folks behind the counter take their time when making the sandwiches, which I had no problem with. As for the sandwich itself, it was a pretty darn good sandwich. The meatball was tasty and just had a homemade taste to it. Best of all, it won't cost you an arm and a leg. Paradiso has a Mom and Pop feel to it, especially in the dining area inside the shop. I'll definitely come back to try some of their other dishes.

Excellent!! I had the meatball sandwich with grilled peppers and provolone. It is messy but a fork and knife takes care of that. It is a neat little mom and pop shop that also has an Italian deli and dry goods. The employees are very nice and hospitable. There is indoor seating as well as a few tables outside. Definitely recommended!! Will have to take friends and co-workers in the future.

This place was gross. I was beyond disappointed. My husband and I came here based on yelp reviews looking for a good Italian sub. We got there and they only had one left and the meat was already pre sliced and put together. My husband asked if they could make something similar and they said they couldn't. The guy behind the counter had to be stoned he was so out of it. My hubby asked what else he recommended and he couldn't tell us. So hubby decided to go with a meatball sub waited five mins before being told it would "take a while"?! So he went with his third choice a coppa sandwich. It then took 15 mins to make our two sandwiches. The decor inside is so weird and bizarre-lots of tchatchkies and a layer of dust coating everything. When we finally got our sandwiches they were both gross. Even the Italian sub was disgusting. I took one bite and wanted to retch. Save your money and time and go to la villa in willow glen. If I never go back (which I never will) it would be too soon.

I've been putting off writing this review for a while. Not because I haven't gone to new places or had something to say...but there was no inspiration. Frankly it depressed me to have the big 3-0-0 be about some mediocre place that sucked. I wanted character, good service, and good food--all rolled into one. You get all three at this authentic Italian deli/restaurant. This is Italian American food at it's best! I've only tried the Italian Combo sandwich so far (with oil and vinegar) and it was delicious. I look forward to trying the amazing looking raviolis next time I come here (and trust me...there WILL be a next time). The decor is eclectic and warm. The staff is welcoming and they smile. Not fake ones either. It was packed when I arrived for lunch today...and I'm glad! Places like this are, sadly, few and far between now-a-days.

While eating here, I had a chance to talk to the owner while she brought out my receipt. This place was built in the 1940's as a specialty store by her family and they owned and worked it since 1967. This raises an interesting point. If a dive restaurant outside of downtown San Jose can stay open and financially well for that long with the owners working it for the majority of life, then you know the place has got to be unique and worth the visit. The shop has a character and atmosphere that creates a sensation of homeyness and nostalgia. The food is prepared fresh. My roommate and I had the meatball sandwich (which is available at the 2nd counter). The bread and meat was great. 4 out of 5 and hoping to stop by again and again.

Drive a tow truck...the appetite is close behind. I'm deskbound these days, but when I was out on the road with my daughter riding shotgun, this is one of our favorite stops. I've never done the kiddie food thing with her, it's always if this is what I'm eating, you're eating it too. It's a different item on the menu for the steam table every day, and I have yet to find something I didn't like. The helpings are reasonably large for me, I do have room for dessert so in their case, it's a good thing. It's without a doubt everything is scratch built goodness and you never leave disappointed. It's too bad the corporate box resturaunts are taking over the city, and the little mom and pop places like this is fast disappearing. I don't know how much longer Paridiso's will be around but in the meantime, I'll savor every bite I can.

The Italian food is great, but kinda of high priced, I recommened that you get the steak sandwich, or the eggpalnt parm...I wanted to have everything I saw. They have a corned beef & cabbage sandwich that I believe is only offered on Tuesdays, and my wife's coworkers go every week to get them. I have been here a couple of times and it was always good. I hear they make all their pastas from scratch. At first when you walk in it looks like a small market place but as you keep going down you see they also have a counter for serving food. I love their lasagna with sausage and garlic bread. We went here for lunch today and it was GREAT! A small family owned place with excellent food. The staff were really nice and the smell when we walked in was fantastic. Mi Amour had the famous meatball with a Little cheese and a glass of Sangria, I had the eggplant parm, salad and a beer. We ate outside on the patio to the left of the entrance, very quiet warm and pleasant. We will definitely be going back and bring family and friends who also enjoy great food. This is a quaint, old Italian place! The food is awesome and it was a wonderful find. Hubby had the Italian sausage sandwich and was over-the-top pleased. (and he's not a sandwich guy!) I had a turkey sandwich but it was fantastic, the bread is the perfect density and it was all good. They say you must try the cannoli. While I have never really had a cannoli that actually tasted like much, this one had a little flavor to it and I liked it. This was a nice, genuine, old Italian family place where everyone was super friendly and food was very good. (but the iced tea isn't so good)

I lived in San Jose all of my life, (only 48 years), and I've never heard of this place until now. My brother asked me to pick up some raviollis here, and because of the reviews, had to try the meatball sandwich. Every single 5 star review is right on the mark. This place reminds me of my great-grandmother's house, and I hate to say it, but the meat balls are better than my nana's. I won't teller that of course. This is my new favorite deli. The raviollis are great, and I wouldn't find if they were just a little bigger. Just means that I have to eat more of them.

As an asian person from the Midwest, I am often gripped with the desire to eat lots and lots of Italian food. As a kid, we always ate Italian when we went out (there weren't a whole lot of Pho places in central Ohio), so to me, that's 'special occasion' food. Anyway- after moving to the Bay Area, I love the variety of Asian food at my fingertips (on the way to my mouth), but I'm disappointed at the lack of honest-to-goodness Italian American food (did the Asians run them out of town to North Beach?). So when I was told about Paradiso, I took the first opportunity to go. This place is a gem. It's a relic from the days before integrated circuits swept over the valley, and walking in is like walking into 1954. There's a nice deli counter (the bologna at $3.19/lb is to die for), a wide variety of sandwich selections, and of course, the hot counter with raviolis, lasagna, and a variety of other pastas and hot italian dishes (this changes regularly, giving you another reason to go back). I've never seen it crowded (being tucked behind the Orchard Supply on San Carlos, it's not exactly located in a hotspot) and there's even a dining room decorated with cheeky decor. It's a fairly immersive experience. WIth few windows, you could tranq-dart a Chicago native and drop them off in the dining room, and they would be none the wiser. I had the Meatball sandwich, and it was just about perfect, the juicy meatball (it is giant and they cut it up to put on the roll) oozing meatbally goodness into the bun. You might pass out after eating it, but there are worse ways to pass out. I can't wait to try the rest of their food! I just hope the Asian cartel doesn't find out about this place.

I am reluctant to write a stellar gleaming review of this place for fear that it will become over-run with trendy douchebags. It is one of the best most friendly no b.s. Italian food joints around. REAL food, all made on site. The Italian combo sandwich will throw you into a food coma so fast after eating it, you wont know what to do, except to maybe finish that San Pellegrino arancha soda. For those who are "in the know," and I am one, "in the know," go for the hot food. REAL Italian -like grandma Bosco used to make- steamed broccoli and the biggest meatballs you will ever see. This place is a hole in the wall. Service is slow but the sandwiches are unbelievable! We had the ham, turkey & provolone sandwich and the famous Italian combo. They were both awesome. Bonus is that you get to eat in the room in the back which reminds you of a cross between grandma's house and an 60's/70's/80's/90's pop culture antique gallery. This place is off the beaten path. Not a place you will happen to just stroll by but it should be. This place is a hidden gem thats located not far from the Fire Station in San Jose. They literally have the freshest pasta I have ever had. I cant even describe it as its not like normal pasta. You dont know what fresh pasta is till you come here so do yourself a favor. The cheese ravioli with meat sauce is amazing and they have the biggest meatball I have ever seen! Put that in a sandwich and you have the BEST meatball sandwich in the world!!! Actually it a meatball sandwich with garganzolla and they put it in this steamer device after its made that makes the cheese melt and makes the bread taste like it just came out of the over. I got mad at my co-worker for never bringing me here. As soon as I walked in it reminded me of living in Toronto near little Italy. The smells of basil and perfectly cooked marinara sauce filled my nostrils with a force of a perfect storm. The feeling of nostalgia, the feeling of my childhood were flooding my flared nostrils as I inhaled every sweet savory smell in the air. Then it happened. Besides my fragmented sentences. or the fact this review now sounds like the worse romance novel ever written. I ordered the meatball sandwich plain with sauce. and the heavens cried and rejoiced, or the other way around. I think I cried. I then watched as the giant fresh meatball was spread out over the soft luxurious bread. Softly the meatball said. Do it slowly, split me in half. spread me out a bit. and lay some sauce on me. Then put me in the oven for a bit and let me crisp up against the warm bread. I then brought you back to my office. laid you down and it happened. I took of your wrapper and smelled the most beautiful smell since something, I dunno, flowers or something. I then took a bite, my co-worker asked me some stupid computer question. I said nothing. tantalized by your taste. your smell, our special moment together. Ours alone. I shall name you patty. But oh Patty you're gone now.... I will miss you. But I feel you in my soul in my heart and the pit of my stomach now is warmed by your tenderness. - I need a cigarette now. That was intense.

I can't get enough of their Italian steak. It's only available on Fridays and it's outstanding. it's basically a piece of rib eye that has been breaded, fried and baked for several hours. It's the most greasy, tender piece of meat ever. The Italian steak is available in a delicious sandwich or on a plate with two sides. The mashed potatoes are delicious and taste like they have a ton of butter. The pasta is also really good. The clam linguine is very good. The meatball sandwiches are delicious as are the cold sandwiches. Tony and Theresa are absolute gems.

I remember seeing this place when I was in elementry school. How this place has four and a half stars I have no idea. We got there and were not greeted with anything more than a "What?" I was not expecting all of the food to be sitting already there, cafeteria style, looking like it had been there for a week. Seriously, the carrots were so dry, it was depressing. Where to start.... So I went to this place about 6-7 months ago as I met up with some friends to take my dogs for a walk, just stopped in there to get a drink, first of all that was the biggest mistake, only getting a drink. Didn't think too much about this spot as I was thinking it was just a small family owned liquor store with a small deli for sandwich's n stuff. About a month or so ago a co-worker ask me to lunch, so I say sure why not? End up going to the place i got my soda from a while back and I say I've been here before, but didn't know they had good food. He recommends for me to get the Meatball sandwich. OK no problem, I don't mind a good sandwich at all. First of all it is a "Meatball" sandwich as you only get one meatball, but its HUGE!!!!! They put the meatball on the bread cut the meatball up add more sauce in it and put some jack cheese and slice up some jalapenos on it. DELICIOUS!!!!! To make it short hands down best meatball sandwich I've had, it's a hole in the wall spot. (Where you get most of the best food from anyways) The meatball was juicy n full of flavor and the jack cheese n jalapenos were the perfect pair for it. I'd recommend this spot to anyone who is looking for a good sandwich as the price is worth it for the food you get and very very yummmy!!! I've been back to this place a few times after trying the meatball sandwich and it is always consistent and good!!!!

Found this deli by performing a search on Yelp. The family run restaurant/deli has a great mom and pop atmosphere. Like others reviewing this restaurant, my family went for the sandwiches. We had the meatball sub, the meatball sub with provolone/peppers and Italian sausage sub with provolone/peppers. The meatballs were tasty with a great texture and the meat sauce was a fine complement. The sausage was also very good. The portions were substantial and the prices are very reasonable. We will definitely return to try other items on the menu. It's too bad we did not find out about this place earlier.

This place is deceiving from the outside. When you walk in it looks like a small local market. As you head to the back you see the steam table and beyond that is a large space for seating. I was so excited to try this place because it looked and smelled like the real deal. The first time I went I was too early and the steam table was not open yet. The second time I was there I waited almost 20 minutes in line and watched as someone behind the counter helped a friend before me. The food is ok at best, I think the pasta is waaayy over cooked. The meatball sub is good but nothing special. Sanitation doesn't seem to be high on the priorities list. I a cashier handle money and then dip her hands right into the salad. Thank god that's not what I ordered.

It's All About Expectations. I just visited Paradiso for the first time with a co-worker, who in turn had recently 'rediscovered' it by way of another co-worker. It seems like the kind of place you've either been going your entire life or a place a good friend introduces you to (figure that anyone that brings you here is a good friend to have - listen to their restaurant suggestions closely). In other words, you're probably not going to see this place driving around on business, see their Super Bowl ad or read about on the "Best Chain Restaurants in San Jose" list. I didn't stray outside the comfort zone on my first visit. I had the meatball, jack cheese and jalepeno sandwich as suggested by my friend. The bread was fresh and the meatball (note, not meatballs - one is enough) was excellent. Take note, this meatball isn't something you get out of a bag in the freezer, with a jar of pre-made sauce poured over it... it's made fresh and tastes like something your Italian mother (or in my case, your Italian friend's mother) has been cooking all day. I don't get down to San Jose every day, but I suspect I'll be back in another week or two to try the lasagna and/or sausage sandwich. While we didn't have a problem finding parking at 11:30, I expect the lunch time crowd can fill up the small parking lot in a hurry. The people working inside were as friendly as you might expect from a small locally owned deli... Happy to make your food how you like it, happy to suggest something if you're undecided and happy to let you be while you think. The price was quite reasonable, with lunch costing under $10 for a sandwich and a Coke. The restaurant is set inside what looks to be a 1940's home in an industrial part of town, close to the freeway and downtown (near 280 and Bird Ave), but by no means on some kind of Restaurant Row. The ambiance is a combination of "small scale Genova Delicatessen" (in downtown Walnut Creek or Temescal Oakland) up front where you order and "Grandma's living room with a few rows of tables set up" in the back where you can sit down and eat. I've read a few reviews from people talking about the experience, noting it's not up to their "food snob" standards. I agree, this doesn't have the same ambiance as some of the great local restaurants in North Beach... but it's a deli. It's not trying to be Michelangelo's or (insert your favorite place to take a date here), and it shouldn't be compared to those places. It's not as uniform or vanilla as your local Subway or Togo's, but again that's not why you come here. You go to Paradiso because you want a home cooked meal, made with mamma's recipe the same way it was made 40 years ago. You want something authentic... and real... and GOOD.

I got the Italian steak sandwich. It cost $7.95 and is only served on Fridays. It was VERY salty, but good! They put this brown gravy on it...next time i would get some red sauce. But overall, it was good! Unfortunately, the cannoli i got was not that great, i wont be getting that again.

This place is the perfect place to go for comfort food, do not come here if you are expecting gourmet or low sodium food. I took the advice from other yelpers and went on a Friday and had the Italian steak sandwich, it was super yummy, but it was a little on the salty side. How are the cookies? Decided to give this place a try after reading the reviews. I don't regret it! Nice people, good food, fun atmosphere. It was nice to sit by the fireplace on a cold day like today and have a hot roast beef sandwich with my choice of toppings! Their sangria is really good and they have lots of fun cooking stuff on sale around the store. I will definitely go back.

Paradiso's is an regular stop for me and my family when holidays come around. They make their own ravioli there and we but up several boxes to take home and make with my mother's ragout sauce. Nobody makes a better sauce than my mother, and you could just eat the stuff with bread. But man, those ravioli are amazing. Paradiso is also a link to a couple of lost eras in San Jose. One it recalls a time when the Burbank and Buena Vista neighborhoods had large Italian/American communities (I can remember back when the Burbank Theater was a legit operation that on certain Sundays they would show Italian language films). It also is a link back when small owner-operated businesses were everywhere. While I have no particular problem with chain restaurants, there needs to be a Paradiso in this town if we are to maintain any sense of character.

I can't recall a bad experience in 30 years from Paradiso. The eggplant parmesan and lasagna are tops in the valley, the raviolis are second to none, and the homemade soups are as good as it gets. This old-world deli can't be beat for hot sandwiches and other hot Italian classics. Our family has had many graduations and other events with Paradiso food, and every meal was memorable. If you are in a hurry and/or like store-quality fast food Italian, you might prefer the Safeway deli or something similar. But if you want homemade sauce, homemade lasagna, homemade soup, and homemade everything else, stop by Paradiso.

This is Goosetown! I have been going there for over 20 years and nothing has changed - it is a great experience with great food. To all you visitors who are not from here (Valley of Heart's Delight), this is what we used to have more of - but now - your housing and strip malls are taking these landmarks out! Yes, this place is definitely a hidden gem. It is also a nostalgic place with plenty of items from the old days...All the food looks hot and fresh. There are a lot of items on the menu board. If you've never been there before (as I was), it can be very hard to decide what to get. Finally, I decided on spaghetti with Italian Sausage. Excellent! Big enough portion of spaghetti served. The Italian Sausage was so good and so plump. Also, it was very easy to cut into smaller portions. It is no wonder that the majority of people give a high rating of this place. The employees are all very nice and treat you like family. It's a place that I will definitely go back to, time and time again. The only bad thing is that they are closed Sundays and Mondays.

Walking into this place is as close to going to a deli back on the south side of Chicago as you're going to get out here. The sandwiches are good and priced fair. The hot food is good too. The meatball sandwich is awesome, so is the eggplant. it's nothing fancy, just simple food that's not trying to be anything else. It seem like every time I go here I see a new sandwich on the wall that I missed before. The home made ravs are pretty sweet too. The Italian combo or poorboy is a great starting place if it's your first time. I get my cold cuts here too so I can make sandwiches at home. Don't forget to grab a cannoli or some spumoni for $1.45 while you're at it. The atmosphere is a time warp. It takes me back to all the corner stores and delis I grew up with back east.

This deli is a hidden gem! They make thier own preservative free sausages here. They also carry a nice variety of imported foods and drinks from Italy. You can even purchase loose spices and teas by the pound. The restaurant in the back serves up the tastiest minestrone soup and meatball sandwiches that I've ever had, and they make home made ravioli too. Whenever I am in the mood for spaghetti but pinched for time, I purchase Paradiso's home made sauce and sausages. My family appreciates the effort, even if I did'nt slave over a hot stove simmering sauce for hours!

My friends Alex and Scott turned me on to Paradiso. They have great food and there is something really quaint about it. It's not the fastest service, so you don't want to eat here if you're in a hurry. But you really can't beat the food. I love the italian sausage sandwich and the meatball sandwich. Yum!

My ex-bf tells me that this place is "da bomb" cause the food is "da bomb". I trust him, so we order a couple of meatball sandwiches. Umm...it's good, but not out-of-this-world good to me. We went back another time and ordered the lasagna and a couple of the chocolate chip cannolies. The lasagna was a pretty big serving for one, but also not out-of-this-world good. The cannolies were tasty and I actually liked that better than the lasagna. Maybe I'll come back here again and try something else on their menu...one day...

A meatball the size of a hardball, tender with just the right amount of garlic, home-made ravioli, side salad, and a side a bread for lunch please! This is my standard order for lunch when I go there. I first started going there when the Grandmama was cooking.Her son said she would get up early to start the sauce. Its like having homemade Italian food for lunch. I love this little place. You'd never know there was a restaurant in back until you go through the deli. One of the hidden delights of old Santa Clara Valley back when there was the cannery still there and orchards in the valley!

My wife and I ate lunch here on a weekday afternoon. She had the special soup of the day (Chicken Noodle) and I had the meatball sub with fried peppers and provolone. My wife's comment on the soup "Next time I get a cold or the flu, you're coming here to get this soup for me." The meatball sub was extremely good, too. It's the best possible Italian food, and I would even prefer my wonderful Uncle Tony's shop to someplace like Olive Garden or Maggiano's, dates included. I discovered Paradiso's Deli through a television program, which spoke about the best sandwiches in the bay area. Paradiso's was selected for their meatball sandwich. I decided to try it, and I have to mention that it is by far the best meatball sandwich my taste buds have savored. Being Mexican, I told Tony, the auspicious sandwich artist, to put extra jalapenos and some jack cheese. Upon tasting the sandwich, I was taken into a state of meditation where my thoughts were cleared, and my spirit enlightened.

Closed on Mondays. Old school italian food. Deli in the front, hot food in the back. Meatloaf and mash potatoes are my favorite Great for lunch. Order at the counter, go grab your soda from the cooler and seat yourself in a converted family room with a fireplace and a tv set. The nice thing about a family run place like this is the employees stay constant. Chain restaurants rotate staff and you never know if you're going to have the same waiter.

This place is real authentic old school! I loved my eggplant parm! I also dived into my husband's meatball cheesy sub. They even offered us extra sauce and a roll to sop up all that extra goodness!!!! The employees are warm, friendly old school too. Since my spouse is from the east coast, he loved the time warp experience into nostalgia land. The food is real home style Italian. I could eat here forever, I just wish it was open for dinner :) I could totally see Guy Fieri from Diner, Drive in and Dives eating here and loving it. Great value for a tasty hot lunch!!!

Paradiso's is like stepping back in time. This is a great spot to grab a deli sandwich, try the eggplant parmesean sandwich. Paradiso's is one of the oldest continuous running restaurants/Deli's in San Jose and you feel like you are family when you visit. They also make their own Ravioli which are fantastic as well.

Finally, I was able to get to this place before it closed on Sat. I got the meatball sandwich and the rav's. When entering, I was greeted by every staff member I saw, my sis thought I was a regular there and was surprised when I told her it was my first time! Food was awesome and the meatball was light but full of flavor! I don't think I can eat another $5 subway meatball again after that. I wish the bread was a bit more tough or toasted because even for take across the street , the bread gets a bit sloppy. The ravs were light and awesonme and I got 2 pints under $10...at La Villa you only get one pint for about the same. I can't wait to go back & try out the other stuff on the menu! I'm going to be putting on some weight this coming winter!

I LOVE this place. I live super close to this delicatessen and it's definitely my go to spot when I'm in the mood for a meatball sandwich. The location is pretty random and the decor is pretty old school, but the meatball sandwiches don't get any better than here. They are generally made by one of two older people and they are the nicest/sweetest people to own a deli. The service is always top notch and I've never received anything other than a smile with service. As for the food, the meatball sandwiches are to die for. It's served with one giant softball sized meatball that is cut up with extra sauce on a roll. They also steam the sandwich which makes the bread nice and fluffy. For under $7 this sandwich will for sure fill you up.

I grew up in San Francisco and would go to North Beach for my Italian fix. I thought those days were over when I moved to San Jose. I will never forget the first time I walked into Paradiso's -- the smells that greeted me let me know that I was home, the array of Italian specialties made this my "go to" place when cooking Italiano. Then there's the food -- the best eggplant parmigiana, stuffed bell peppers, spaghetti sauce, and sandwiches. The ambiance is wonderful - from the crowded aisles, Tony's cooking, Teresa at the register, the back room with a collection of memorabilia, the outside tables -- what more can you ask for! The third generation of my family are now Paradiso's regulars. Grandkids say "Let's go my my favorite place which is mommy's and grandma's favorite too." These gems don't last forever so I will appreciate every day that it exists and can get something great to eat and chat with Tony and Teresa.

wowwwww i can't believe this place really exists. it's like walking into yesteryear...well, to a year far before i was born. everyone says hi to you when you walk in (and not just the employees). total mom and pop. there was a group of guys who looked like lumberjacks on their way out when i came in... this place is honestly so randomly located in the middle of industrial/near downtown sj. there was an autographed photo of nancy grace behind the register! i had the eggplant sandwich, which was just amazing... melt-in-your-mouth ooey-gooey eggplant and marinara on super-soft bread with a melty slice of provolone. just completely simple and classic and satisfying. as if i needed another spot to crave food from... but here it is. i'm going back soon, and spreading the word.

I read so many great reviews about this deli that my family decided to give it a try. I knew from the reviews that it was a small family owned mom and pop joint so I knew what to expect when I walked in. I ordered there famous meatball sandwich and noticed behind the counter the food looked as if it had been sitting for hours and didn't look as if it was just cooked that day. My sandwich was made and put into the microwwave and was just warm the cheese didn't even melt. Spaggetti was ordered and agian it just didn't look freshly cooked it was kinda dry with not much sauce. We paid for our dinner 46.00 dollars which included some desserts. The food didn't have much flavor and the bread they served was just sliced cold french bread....not garlic bread. I wasn't so pleased with this deli and wouldn't go back. The meats and Lasazna behind the counter just didn't look so pleasing. The Lasazna looked black...ewww couldn't figure out that one!! Well I am glad that I tryed it we were very curious since it had such great reviews and has been in business since 1947.

Me and the crew were really wanting some Old Spaghetti Factory because we haven't eaten there for years (since we were kids) but O.S.F. was closed in the afternoon so I yelped up an Italian restaurant and here we were at the front door of Paradiso. Seriously a hole in the wall. A great hole none the less!! We all ordered up something different, I got spaghetti and it was THE BEST!! I also got a sausage, and my fiancee got a meatball. I'm not a big meatball fan but DAMN this meatball was good!! It was HUGE!! The size of my freakin fist!! So good!! I love eating in the atmosphere of some Italian Grandma's living room. We sat near the crackling fireplace and watched us some Days of Our Lives. (Haha!!) We're from SF but this place is totally worth the drive!! My only complaint, I wish they stayed open longer than 4:30 pm!! WHAT IF I WANT SOME DINNER?!!?

Every talks like this place is the best italian sandwich place around. Took the family there and had the meatball sandwich and roast beef sandwiches. If you have kids under 14, forget it, the food isn't tasty enough for them, it's rather bland as the sauce is pretty mild. The couple serving the food were very nice, but the food was just lacking something. We were in there on a Saturday afternoon and were the only ones in there, it was like eating in the most quiet place ever. They need to spruce it up a bit so it doesn't look like a cross between a library and someone's living room....add some music to keep your mind off the silence. We were almost scared to talk amongst ourselves. Anyway back to the food, only one roll choice, a basic white roll and the roast beef was a little tough and definitely flavorless. Portions are pretty large but when you factor in a drink you are paying $10 per person....I think you can find other places to spend the $10 to get better food and better ambience at lunch.

After seeing the reviews on this place, I decided to give it a go. I'd have to say it's good but not great. Had the special (roast beef) sandwich, and it was again, good but not great. It's simple, a beef roast sliced up and put onto bread with gravy or au jus. It's got a very quaint and homey feel to it, but it's really nothing out of the extraordinary. As far as food quality, there's definitely a lot better. I'd go if it were more convenient, but definitely can't say that it's something to go out of your way for. The Italian cuisine in the bars looked to be again hearty and simple, the meatballs looked big. Honestly, nothing special about this place.

Whoo...I came on a hot day! When I walked in, I was surprised at the ...blast to the past.... atmosphere. It really old school...interesting. It's one of those places, where you just have to see it to believe it. I had the meatball sandwich w/provolone. The ladies behind the counter were ever so friendly and nice. I saw one of the ladies make my sandwich. She took a roll, put some sauce on both sides, mushed it up, then took a large meatball, cut it up, place slices of provolone cheesethen warmed it. The sandwich itself was real salty. No real spices or that something special. Nothing to go ga ga over.

The stars say it all, its hard to find fault with this place. Its tucked on such a non-descript street that its easy to miss, but do seek it out if you are craving some authentic Italian meatball sandwich. Oh my what a treat. Perfectly moist, just enough of everything served on a perfect soft fresh bread. I was confused first time as i wasn't sure what to do, but everyone is so helpful behind the counter. They all remind me of some Italian family back there cooking up a storm managed by this pint size grandma ruling with a iron hand. Since its out of my way i have started making it a point to get one when i am in the neighborhood. For all those people who think the villa on WG sells good meatball sandwich you are so wrong try one here and you'll know what you are missing.

Its out of the way but its a gem. There are 2 or 3 generations of family here, all make you feel like family as well. You can get quarts of great sauce to go, real dried pasta (not the kind in cellophane, although they have that too), grated cheese, and big trays of lasagne. Make sure you call ahead for the large quantities, its homemade, not frozen!

This is on my "San Jose Classics" list. All I can say is that my grandpa frequented this place once a week since he was young man. And let me tell you that he was one tough guy to please when it came to Italian food. This is a classic Old San Jose place. The workers from the Del Monte Cannery right down the street would come here to get their ravioli and other Italian specialties. You can't GET more Old San Jose than that. Yes, folks, canneries used to be the big thing around here long before silicon.

I don't understand all the high ratings. The food wasn't disgusting or anything, but there was nothing in my visit that would make me want to go back. First, service was very slow. I'm not sure how you can be slow when the food is sitting in steam trays, waiting to be scooped served, but they managed to accomplish that feat. Second, I've made better marinara sauce at home, and I'm not Italian. I can forgive slow if the food is outstanding. This wasn't. Like I said, it wasn't bad, but just not of a quality that I'd leave the house to go get.

Finally tried this place out for lunch. It's a gem. I had the meatball sandwich, the meatballs were amazing and definitely tasted fresh and homemade, along with the sauce. Unfortunately, the bread was extremely soggy and I wasn't able to save the other half as a sandwich. Maybe if they toasted their bread a bit more or put the cheese on the bottom so it supported the sauce and meatballs, it would last longer? Just a suggestion, but I'd definitely recommend this place. We need more authentic restaurants like these in san jose!!!

A midtown land mark. This place is hard to spot so keep your eyes pealed for the Italian red green and white patio when driving by! A tiny little venue, old, clutter and full of interesting artifacts and antiques. One counter is for the cold cuts, the other is for hot foods. I tend to migrate straight for the hot food, I'm a sucker for a good meatball sandwich. This is without a doubt a family establishment. Truly home cooking and they treat you like one of their own. The old couple that runs this place with their family are as sweet as can be. The food is excellent and the experience is charming. Parking is limited since we are downtown. I'll have to give the cold cuts a try something now that I'm working close by. Thanks for the nice experience.

It's a small little place deli on one side with meats and cheeses and other side little market that sells Italian food like eggplant parm, spaghetti and meatballs soo mouthwatering. How would anyone ever find this place if it were not for Yelp? Well, apparently people managed to find it as it's been there for like 50 years or something. I went for only one reason - to try their meatball sandwich. It did NOT disappoint. I got their meatball sandwich with cheese and jalapeno peppers and it was truly excellent. Their hours are ridiculous, but I guess if you can do enough business in 5 hours a day, why not!! Go for it. You won't be disappointed.

The place has good food and has a mom n pop feel to it. The sandwiches are made with a health portions of meat. I would recommend giving this place a try. The only thing bad I have to say is they should clean the place up a bit .

It ain't fancy dining, but if you want solid, old-fashioned Italian-American fare in a dining room that hasn't changed since the 1940s, this is the place for you. The same family has run the place since the '40s... possibly the same person. That ain't no spring chicken doling out the raviolis. Everyone working, both young and old, is friendly, capable, and wonderful. Plus, there's a market in front which seems to have been last stocked, and priced, during the Carter Administration. I found filters for my Chemex coffee urn for 4.45. Nowadays those go for about 8.50. If you need any discontinued product or ingredient, there's a chance they've still got one languishing on the shelf here.

You HAVE to get here before it's not here anymore. I hope the owners live forever, but.... It's got to have been here since the 40s. Maybe 50s. It's an ancient store. I can imagine the stories those walls could tell. The place has character! For cold stuff (sandwiches, general groceries, etc), hit up the front of the store. For hot food, head to the back. Further back still, there's additional seating with vintage decor and all. Depending on the line (meaning, if there is ANYone in front of you), you'll have to wait. Breathe deep...it's OK. The wait is worth it. Staff are friendly without being cloying. They're very interested in getting down to business. If you use a credit card, be aware that this may slow things up further, as they either employ a dial up modem, or else have to actually call to authorize the transaction: I was not going to let my food get cold to find out. They told me to sit, and they'd bring my receipt to me. That said: meatballs in sauce, on a plate, with a side salad. That's all I need. Heaven on a little paper plate. I wish places like this could get frozen in time forever. God bless the mom and pop shop.

This place was kind of hard to find, in my opinion, but I'm also not from the area. The parking lot was also small. This is a really cute Italian deli! I ordered a meatball sub and a tiramisu. I really enjoyed both and would definitely go back. The meatball sub had a lot of sauce (I like my foods extra saucey) and the bread was really soft! I was expecting the bread to be toasted but it was still good. The tiramisu is probably one of my favorite tiramisus that I've tried, though I haven't been to a lot of bakeries in the area.

There is such an old school feeling about the place. A bunch of old cans of coke and sardines places around the store, probably still for sale. A retro cash register on the counter, probably not because they wanted a retro look. So I pretty much wandered around the deli, hoping someone could point me towards someone who could help me. After walking around for 5 minutes, an older gentleman asked "Are you hungry?" "Always. Whats good here?" "Meatball sandwich." "Sold" I replied, so quick he didn't have time to finish the word "meatball". So the older gentleman took his time and made me the sandwich. There was absolutely no rush in his demeanor. Even as the line started to form behind me, he took his time and slowly placed each meatball gently onto the bread. I'm a big fan of meatball sandwiches, and this one was definitely one of the better meatball sandwiches I've had in a long time. My girlfriend saw someone eating a steak sandwich and she ordered that. It was also very very delicious. Definitely will be back again. Really delicious sandwiches. And does not get as busy as other willow glen sandwich places during lunch.

I've eaten lunch here about a dozen times. It's not close to my work, but I make a special trip over there...especially if the boss is paying. Everything here is crazy good, but the meatball sandwich...holy schmoly...it's good. Get there early for lunch because the line always goes out the door.

The Muffuletta fell flat! If you have read my reviews, I'm in search for the best sandwiches in the south bay. I found this place on yelp; the reviews where overwhelmingly good, so I had to try it. Might be it was what I ordered, so I will try it again and order something else, but had to share this "muff" of a Muffuletta experience. In a word, it was bland and dry. The meat had almost no flavor, the provolone was mild, the bread was dry and the olive mixture came from a jar. I figured this is suppose to be an Italian Deli, they probably make their own olive mixture. Unfortunately, the olive mix overwhelmed the sandwich. After two bites I was looking for mayo, olive oil (traditional in a muffulatta, but not included here) or something to add to give the sandwich to give it some moisture. I was very hungry, so got through half the sandwich and threw the rest away. I guess that says it all.

Bringing you old school everything from service, original location, and everything else. Their store inventory contains a lot of Italian goods including wine. Their food offerings are separated into 2 parts: cold and hot. Near the door are the cold food offerings such as cold sandwiches starting at about $5. In the back are the hot food offerings such as sandwiches, meatballs, lasagna, and other Italian favorites. The ladys here were super nice. Way in the back is the eating room, I just love nearly everything about it. Wooden tables, old school stove top, original articles of art, newspaper, etc. Meatball sandwich- delicious large balls smoothed in sauce. Super messy, super good. I had the Meatball, Jack and Jalapeno sandwich. I bought a second meatball with fried peppers for my husband. Sandwiches just did not live up to what I expected. Got to say I like Trader Joe's meatballs are better. And the bread was stale. Don't know what you guys are talking about!!!!!!! And the line was terrible and did not move!!!!!!

Don't let the location fool you. This place has some of the best Italian sandwiches in town. I also love the mini Italian grocery section of the store, gives you a little nostalgic feeling. The Italian combo sandwich just has layers of flavors with the different types of Italian deli meats with oil/vineger. The meatball sandwich is full of meaty and saucy goodness. Get one, or the other, or both! Either way, you can't go wrong!

My name is Rachel L. and I am a carb-oholic. As such, it takes something pretty extraordinary for me to ignore a big, beautiful plate of spaghetti. And yet, somehow, some way, Paradiso's meatballs gave me tunnel vision. Maybe it was an illusion, since the size of said meatball was similar to that of a regulation tennis ball, but I'm not going to waste my time with hypotheses. Not when I could instead be spending that precious time planning my next visit! One note: leave your herbivore friends at home. I brought mine, and there was only one menu option for her.

An easy return if I happen to be in the area. I have yet to find that time machine at Fry's. For now, this will have to do. Despite the valley's fast, present and future looking techie environment, this area of San Jose bordering downtown and the burbs of the west side is a kaleidoscope of 20th century eras gone by. The surrounding architecture reflective of Ozzy and Harriett and the grit of the decline of downtown through the 70s. My favorite is the road sign at San Carlos and Bascom, pointing in the direction of Valley Medical Center. Beat up, stickered and tagged, it stands a lonely sentinel pointing the way for the sick and injured. Simply put, if San Jose was a house, then this collective enclave of Burbank, Bascom and Rose Garden is the attic. Not too far of analogy as the area was once known for many antique shops. For better or worse, the area is going through its own urbanization with many of the antique shops giving way to dollar stores and the like. Sad to see, but as with anything within the valley, change is not permanent. There are those that do withstand the test of time and many are beloved institutions. Basically on the list are Falafel Drive Inn, Time Deli, Pink Poodle (history folks, history), By th Bucket, the old Orchard Supply Hardware, Race Street Seafood Kitchen (nee Meat and Fish) and many others. But let's begin with Paradiso. To the uninitiated, it looks like a no go zone. Wrapped in cyclone fencing, the cottage sporting the RC Cola sign is a beacon of sandwiches and comfort food bliss. Located in the shadow of the former Del Monte plant, one can go antiquing and something good to eat. As a toy junkie, I enjoy looking at the die cast fire trucks kept in a china cabinet. Reminds me of the better toy stores back in the day in Eastridge when the higher end Matchbox cars and toy soldiers were kept behind the glass. A quick turn to the left and its steam table heaven. A definite stop on red sauce trail with regular offerings of pasta and sauce or daily specials. I go rogue and grab a lunch plate of fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad and garlic bread to go. Despite the signage warning of a wait, the owner-operators and employees will serve with a smile and will do their utmost to serve you well. Be sure to grab an RC Cola for the full experience. Altogether the food, hospitality and history...delicious.

I have been excited to try this place since I just moved right near here. After watching the Food Network and seeing a delicious looking meatball sandwich I searched on Bing for "The Best Meatball Sandwich San Jose" and this place not only had high Yelp reviews but is written about all over the web. Today I finally got to try it and I must say that it has lived up to its reputation! Great food and extremely friendly staff. I got to talk to one of the owners (1/2 of the Paradiso brother & sister in-law pair) and she told me that they have been around since the 50s. A place doesn't stay around that long for no reason. I'm glad I live so close because I think I found my new favorite lunch spot, I just wish they had longer hours so I could get dinner here too.

A tear is running down my cheek as I think of how delicious that meatball sandwich with peppers and provolone was. Okay, maybe it's also partially due to the discomfort from how tight my pants fit now. I haven't been here in about 10 years. I'm not exactly sure how or why, but Paradiso just kind of slipped off my radar. But I've recently been trying to break the coworkers out of the 8-restaurant rotation we've had (and looking for a fair-priced alternative to that horrendously overrated and overpriced "Italian" restaurant on 2nd and San Carlos) and Paradiso sprung to mind. Brought 3 coworkers today and, boy oh boy is this place as wonderful as I remembered. The decor hasn't changed. At all. The food is just as good, if not better. And the service has definitely improved. And that sweet owner Theresa. I wish she were my grandmother. As I walked out of there, longing only for the canoli I didn't get, I turned to my coworkers and said "This place is legit." They all nodded silently, unable to muster the strength to get words out. I think I'll go take a nap now.

Meatball sandwiches are made with love. In fact, everything here is made with love. Which is why you should A) order in advance or B) expect to wait if you are coming during the lunch rush. This family owned Italian delicatessen may not have the best curb appeal, but you are definitely missing out if you have not gone through that door. I've actually only come here on Saturdays, but I have not been disappointed one bit. I also visit about a little after the lunch rush (2PM - 2:30PM) so I can take my time to pick what I want to eat. The meatball sandwiches are fantastic. The meatballs are so juicy and full of flavor. I also get the Prime Rib, which is the Saturday Special, and it's delicious as well. Meat is tender and juicy and they slice each piece right in front of you while pouring over the Au Jus sauce. Only reason why I give it a 4-star is because I am comparing it to LaVilla and unfortunately it doesn't quite stack up against LaVilla in Willow Glen. In fact, Paradiso should probably get 4.5 stars IMO. However, that's nothing to be ashamed of and if you are looking for an Italian deli (or even a sandwich shop in San Jose), look no further than Paradiso.

"A taste of home in the Bay Area" I finally got to go to Paradiso, after being recommended by my friend. And was he ever right. It was like stepping back in time or back home to some of the local Delis or General Stores back east. The place has authentic written all over it, they care about the food more than the decor feel. And I love it. Everything looks like it was made fresh and home made, even down to the sausages. There are some groceries strategically or not so strategically located in rows and shelves. And then when you step into the middle of the place, you are greeted by the most friendly and sweetest people you will ever meet. Just remember this place is closed on Sundays and Mondays. So for the food, yes the food. I have only been there this one time, and plan on going back more soon. But, based on my first visit. Wow, it is like a taste of home and even Jersey where I lived for a while, which some can argue has some of the best mom and pop Italian places. But, this place transported me back home after I ordered the #7 - Eggplant parm, sausage and a green salad. The eggplant parm was just perfect, not too acidic like some places, and you can tell they have been making this from time immemorial. The sausage, home made and you can taste the quality. Not made up all gristle and fat, but there is some real meat in there. I can't wait to try their famous sausage and pepper sandwich. So, in conclusion, go to Paradiso, because its great. Better than great, its a place that brings you back to a time that was more pleasant. A time that people cared and too pride in making food. And for me it was like I stepped into a small place back in Connecticut, a place that has been open for decades, and it hasn't been bought out by some large corporation that manufactures taste. These people make real food with love. Just go.

Solid food. Definitely a dude's lunch stop in the fact that it's kind of hidden away from the busyness of the city and the decor. When you go into the place you'll notice it's cluttered...and I mean very cluttered. There are two counters for ordering as well. Perhaps this is for the foot traffic, but in all seriousness I think it's a little bit of a turn off. The points in the stars though go to the family which runs the joint and the food. It's definitely priced out right for the kind of food you get and the service is friendly. The meatball sandwich is something you have to try in all it's simple glory. Would I go back again? Probably once or twice more at least. They also have some things for sale at the front of house in a market setting. After all, it's an Italian deli!

I tried this place only recently after hearing about it on Eye on the Bay. The italian s'wiches here are super duper hearty, comforting, and filling, not to mention messy but tasty! I have tried and ordered these items thus far: Meatball swich: Good n filling messy carbo meaty goodness. I'm not sure what type of bread they use but it's kinda like a french sweet bread just more dense. It soaks up the sauces and juices quite nice. My only gripe is the meatballs just needs more salt! Italian Combo: Super messy, and hard to chew thru some of the meats, but tasty nonetheless. I had mayonaisey fingers afterwards.. eech...i would probably eat this with a knife and fork. I took the leftovers home and actually pan fried the meats into a crisp and made a crunchy swich after. It was helluva lot tastier. Italian Beef swich: Oh my, this is the real deal right here, I have never tried an Italian Beef Swich and I can say that this is good stuff! The beef is like a fried country steak so it has a nice bread crusted exterior. The meat was fork tender and it was served with house gravy. I asked them to put on lettuce and tomato and boy did it really punch up the goodness. This is a nice tasting treat that I would go back for. satisfies your meat tooth. lol. Eggplant Parmesan: cheesy, tomatoey, rich, gooey, and damn tasty! Italian comfort food at it's simplest and best. This place definitely is a great find. Everything from the Antique home turned deli feels comforting, and authentic. The lady that helped me out was also very nice, she took her time to explain to me what dishes they had to offer. Will be back for more.

Talk about your old-school neighborhood places. The location and the no-frills layout and staff of this little Italian-style deli make this a place where I'm sure lots of memories are made. On the edge of the Little Italy section of San Jose, and centrally located near freeways and main streets, this is a nondescript building with anything but nondescript interior and definitely anything but nondescript food! Everything here tastes homemade, and its rich, buttery, warm, fatty... all the things that make homestyle Italian food good. I had a meatball sandwich and it was great. Great sauce, great meatballs, bread that got soggy from the sauce and cheese.. They also had Italian staples like lasagna and manicotti, and of course, cannolis.. If this was in my neighborhood I'd likely go weekly, but since its not, I have to patronize another Italian-style deli in Willow Glen. BUT, Paradiso was a nice change of pace for me. Also, they have a really roomy and open and welcoming dining room for you and the whole family.

Wow, this place is a hidden gem for sure. From the outside, it looks super shady - even when you walk in, you're not sure exactly what to do and where to get the amazing food. You can order sandwiches I think up front, but the good stuff is in the back - walk through the store, and you get to another counter with yummy seemingly-homemade italian food. It's... pretty freaking good. Yes, the credit card machine is pretty slow, but I mean... what do you expect a place like this? It's fitting, and kind of adorable. The owners are super friendly, and the prices are awesome. The clientele is mostly locals, and many of the customers you can tell are regulars. There are some tables in the back - really homey atmosphere. Super glad we found this place, and will definitely be back!

I had to check this place out due to the rave reviews. It was a little hard to find due to the neighboring auto shops and non-food establishments within its vicinity. Parking lot is small. Furniture is outdated yet gives you that homey, authentic feel to it. The inside of the shop is pretty cramped as well. Not a lot of light coming in either so I opted to eat outside. I got the meatball sandwich and enjoyed watching it get prepared. They started with the bread and poured some sauce on it. Then they scooped up a meatball the size of a baseball and started slicing it evenly... added the cheese, more sauce, then placed it inside this little steamer that heated the sandwich up with a manual crank. Sandwich was really good. But just as a tip, don't forget to grab a handful of napkins. the sauce and meat was dripping on my plate, table, and clothes with every bite. The melted cheese was pretty good too, as it hung from my sandwich like taking a bite from a slice of pizza.... So why the three stars? It was more like 3.5... I'm not sure, but I'm usually a fan of marinara, but the extra sauce was just a bit overwhelming. I felt like the sandwich satisfied my cravings for italian food for at least a week...

Paradiso is the kind of place that I can feel proud to support. From their quirky Winchester Mystery House like interior to their charming old school staff, I felt like walking back into a time machine. I tried both the sausage sandwich with peppers and cheese and their famous meatball sandwich with provolone and jalapenos. The sandwiches are not brain surgery. They get out a fresh, soft white roll, add sauce to the roll, slice up the meat and spread upon the roll, add more sauce, add cheese and other stuff, and done! Each sandwich was around $6 although I wasn't charged sales tax that day because their cash register wasn't working...I ended up throwing the tax into their tip jar. I'm feeling eager and anticipating a very swift return back to Paradiso before the 2011 year turns over!

I definitely expected more from this place based off of the reviews. I liked that this place was family run. The service was friendly but it was also quite slow. I ordered the Hot Salami Sandwich while my boyfriend had the Meatball Sandwich. I wanted the Steak Sandwich but apparently that's only on Fridays. The Hot Salami Sandwich was served as a cold sandwich and came with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and cheese. I didn't really care for it. I ate about half and tossed the rest. It wasn't a terrible sandwich, but it's not something I'd order again. My boyfriend's Meatball Sandwich was a lot better than mine, but he felt his sandwich was just okay and that he's had better. Overall, this place is pretty affordable and the people are nice. However the food isn't something I'd come back for.

This place is weird. It's right next to where I live. My friends took me here for lunch the other day. Adjectives describing this place as "hole-in-the-wall" or "dive" or "grandma's house" are all accurate. You walk into the place and you walk into a crowded deli section with coolers and a refrigerated deli cooler. You keep going and there is a hot bar with a menu and a list of specials. You tell the nice older lady what you want and she ladles it onto the plate. You then proceed to the cash register at the end and a nice older lady rings you up. You keep going and you're in the dining room, which looks like a living room of a house full of kitsch but filled with tables and chairs. I got the ravioli and meatball. It was served with a small salad with a choice of dressing. The ravioli wasn't very warm and it was served with a thin, greasy tomato sauce. The meatball was gigantic and really good. It was hot and full of flavor. It was about $10 for the meal and a can of soda. I was a little disappointed in the ravioli. I would like to return here to try something else.

I accompany my sandwich with a small salad, pretty perfect combination. Let me tell you some things to know if you're a noob! +STAY AND EAT THERE! + go to the very back of the restaurant for indoor seating + pass the deli counter for the hot foods (lasagna, meatballs, etc) + if you want a side (macaroni salad, potato salad) get that at the deli counter. I didn't see at first when I went in there. + everything is GREAT

Best meatball sandwich I've had. But that's really just the start. This place looks like it has been there since the 50's, and I'm sure it probably has. Total time machine once you walk in, I love these types of places. They make cold sandwiches up front, hot sandwiches and plates in the back. Everyone that works here is magnificently older than dirt, but not grumpy... they are fantastic. The service is slow but they advertise that and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll definitely be coming back here to try out all the food they have to offer, this is a gem of a place and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place for a true experience of dining.

There's just not enough mom & pop shops nowadays, so Paradiso is a gem situated in the middle of chain-filled San Jose. The place is really cute, almost like you're walking into someone's home. It's cluttered, but in a good way. They've got various deli products, some cheeses, and a myriad of food products that I don't have an inkling of an idea what to do with. If I ever do need De Cecco tortellini or some good gouda, I'll be paying Paradiso a well-deserved visit. If ever. They've got great food, and I mean, some really, really good stuff. BF and I got ourselves a roast beef sandwich, it was scrumptious. They even left some banana peppers on the side, as if they were reading my mind! Their cannoli is perfect for a summer dessert. If only they'd work a little on their selection (it's not too much, there's only 2 pasta dishes, booo!) and if they didn't grunt and sigh and grumble while getting my food. Come on guys, I heard that! Regardless, I personally would like to see Paradiso flourish.

Stepping foot inside of Paradiso conjured memories of meals with my Italian relatives. The staff was happy, talkative, and charming as they went about the restaurant. The setting is not upscale by any means, instead it's decorated the way an Italian Grandma's dining room would be; with simple decor and family portraits. The food isn't fine dining, you aren't going to find Giada DeLaurentiis in the kitchen. What you will find is excellent Italian comfort food. The steak sandwich (fridays only) seems to be what they are known for, but it isn't what most people think of when they hear "steak sandwich." You aren't going to get a thick cut of ribeye, instead you get several thin cuts of breaded beef soaked in rich tomato sauce that creates an incredibly tender, almost melt in your mouth, sandwich that you can't help but love. Eating here reminding me of one of my favorite Italian sayings, "a mangiar questa minestra o saltar questa finestra," which literally means "eat this soup or jump out this window," but is used the way Americans say "take it or leave it."

Now that's a good sandwich! I am a big fan of mom and pop deli's and this place is a perfect example of one that does it right! Today I tried the hot steak sandwich which is a Friday special. Rebecca Black was playing in my head as I walked in because I was so happy I could try this steak sando! They chop up a delicious piece of steak and place it in some excellent bread and drizzle sauce on top. I chose the marinara and I am quite happy with that decision! The meat was perfectly tender and the sandwich was pure happiness. I've also gotten the mild coppa sandwich. I love coppa! Probably my favorite sandwich meat. Paradiso uses it to make a phenomenal sandwich. If you've never tried coppa I suggest you head over to paradiso and just go to town! They also boast a large menu of hot foods. Never tried them but they all look great. The people who work there are all incredibly nice and the place has a great family feel. You actually feel quite at home within the dining room. I just love this place and I think you will too!

O...M...G...This place is insanely delicious. It's hidden in an area of town I don't frequent, so I hadn't even heard of this place until people in my office started talking about how amazing their sandwiches are. Intrigued, a few friends and I went for lunch the other day. I had the meatball sandwich with provolone and fried peppers. I've been dreaming of another sandwich ever since. Such a tasty, tender meatball; amazing sauce...good bread. I could go on and on. Be ready for slow-ish service...everything is handmade with loving care, which takes a little bit of time. It's hard to fault them for that, though, since the food was amazing and the staff there is old-school, polite and sweet as pie. Next time I'll have to try the tiramisu and/or sangria...and maybe get more than just that one sandwich.

Yep, I agree with everyone else. A little (lost in time) hidden gem. It's like going back to 1969 for old school italian sandwiches. The buns are steamed after the sandwiches are made - and it makes them all soft and chewy. We split a meatball/jack and a (friday special) italian steak. What a strange spot Paradiso is... I found Paradiso on Yelp, it has a 4.5 star average with 90 reviews - so I was excited to try it. It is a tiny little old house, misplaced in the middle of a very industrial area near downtown. I walked in and felt like I was in an episode of Hoarders. You walk into the "front room" or the cold sandwich and grocery area. You walk to the "dining room" and you can order from the hot plate. In the "living room" there are tables for you to eat in front of their fireplace. The clutter in this house was pretty much a turn off for this germaphobe and neat freak. I asked what was the most popular item, the nice old lady suggested the Meatball Sandwich. I rolled with that and watched her prepare my sandwich. She put down a soft roll, took a scoop of gravy, took one jumbo meatball and diced it up on my roll, and then added a second scoop of gravy and sprinkled on some parm. She then made the sandwich for the girl behind me, while I impatiently waited to pay and get mine. I ate there, but imagined that this sandwich would have no chance if you were to take it to go. The sandwich was pretty good. It was sloppy for sure, even though I ate it there. BUT, like I described earlier - the cleanliness and disarray of this spot just didn't do it for me. I can think of a million reasons to go to La Villa or Antipasto's first. Sorry Paradiso. 3 Stars

I thought my first review would be of somewhere chic, expensive maybe Michelin starred but no it's a meatball sub at Paradiso! It's a little place out of the way but worth the drive. It's a deli that wouldn't be out of place in New Jersey or even Italy itself. Really old school and I'm just sorry I didn't discover it years ago! Not only that, it's nice to support what is obviously a small family business rather than some chipotle chain (not that I don't love chipotle!) Anyway, the meatball sub is on the softest roll filled with delicious meatball mixture somewhere between balls and a slab of meatloaf. It was delicious! The sausage and peppers and the steak sandwich looked great too! You know it's good when the place is filled with San Jose law enforcement.

I have totally fallen in love with this place. I put it up there with the Warehouse Cafe in Port Costa, CA. Just so unique and quaint like a movie should be shot there. Came by for lunch the other day. Paradiso is tucked away from the main road and seems very dated and odd from the outside. Upon entering, the interior seems like a mini-mart from the 60s with cramped aisles. Towards the back of the market you can place your order for food. Ordered a meatball sandwich for $7 which consisted of some type of store-bought bread which was okay and a huge meatball which was tasty. There was plenty of marinara sauce and a slice of mozzarella cheese. The eggplant sandwich was not so good. The eggplant seems to have been overcooked and wasn't worth the ~$8.

All I wanted for Christmas was a legit Italian deli in San Jose, and this one rivals the best in Philadelphia. We came late during my trip here so the hot bar had been closed down, but that didn't stop us from leaving with arms stacked high prosciutto, hot sandwiches, and grocery items. The line was short, but the long wait was familiar and reminiscent of visiting a meat counter in the Italian Market. Everyone gets the same amount of attention, and when the lines get long, you get to sample whatever they're slicing at the time. While waiting for out order I eyed a manual lever espresso machine, but wasn't sure who to ask for a shot. I took note of the cases of Chianti, inexpensive Pellegrino, and cozy seating in the back room. By the time we received our sandwiches, we were in a bit of a rush but left the shop giggling, high on cured meat. My next order of business? I go forth to find the Jewish deli of my dreams. The pastrami, it calls to me.

This is such a hole in the middle of nowhere. I was actually surprised at the location. The place is definitely not aesthetically pleasing when you first walk in and you kind of ask yourself WTF? I kept expecting better because of the reviews. The service also lacked, we did not know where to order or what to do when we first walked in. There is a deli counter and a small store up front and in the back the food service. Finally an elderly woman and man came from the back to service us. All we said was meatball sandwich and they started serving it. We weren't ask if we would like cheese or condiments or anything which was disappointing, plus the man wore no gloves and touched the actual sandwich to adjust the meat mess (raised eyebrow). I immediately started looking for the health code signs. As we stood there a lady ran in and went directly to where we were at and desperately ask if there was any lasagna left, she continue to tell the elderly man and woman "I brought my family in for it". Guess she was bringing in people to enjoy this famous lasagna! Maybe we were ordering the wrong thing?!?!! Back to us. We took our very messy meatball sandwich and sat down to grub but I was turned off by things already, but then, OMG! The heavens of food pleasure opened up in my mouth. This was the BEST meatball sandwich I ever had. I literally scarfed mine down in 5mins. It made me think about what other amazing foods they made that I could try next time, but I need to get my fill of another of those amazing sandwich. I would have given this place 5 stars but the environment and the service was not that great.

I ate here today for the first time on a whim, and man, was it tasty! The staff was like a big, friendly family, too. My meatball sandwich was on softball-sized meatball sliced up, with peppers and cheese. Very tasty and messy -- ask for a fork. Quaint house turned into a deli and tiny Italian market. Great stuff! The business itself is open 9:00 AM - 4:28 PM (their words), but the steam table is only open from 11:00 AM - 4:28 PM. She said they start packing the table away around 3:00 PM, but you can still order any of the items and they'll make 'em.

Oh meatball sandwich, you are so delicious! I tried the regular meatball sandwich and the jalapeno and jack cheese one. I personally like the regular meatball sandwich better because it's plain and simple. They use one HUGE meatball for the sandwich and slice it into small pieces of heaven. The meatball is full of flavor and sooo tender. At about $6 it's well worth it since it's pretty filling. I highly recommend this place and will be back for sure to try something new!

Quaint and simple; quality & good. My first time. Italian food is one of my favorites. I've been asking people around for authentic Italian food in the area considering I can't afford to to go to Italy. I heard from fellow yelpers that I found that place. Impressed. The meatball sandwich is not as messy as many say it is. The sauce does fall out and some of the meatball squeezes out on the sides, but if you just know how to grip it right simultaneous to stuffing your face, you'll be just fine :) I think I got it down. Plus, the drippage and spillage is a good sign of happiness and fulfillment. FInger lickin, lip smacking good!. The lasagna, very delightful. I was happy and I definitely will return again. Btw, my friend usually gets heartburn when she eats red sauce, but only got a very minor heartburn after eating the lasagna. The food was not as salty as other "authentic" Italian places. Enjoyable. I rec'd my food in less than 3 minutes of paying for it. Maybe b/c I came at 11:45am? Either way, time wont matter b/c its that worth it.

This is a cute little divey place. The people who work there are like your friend's grandparents- warm and welcoming. If you're in a rush, this place probably isn't for you. Otherwise, it's a little gem tucked in a nondescript neighborhood behind OSH. I had the meatball sandwich with peppers and provolone. Cheesy meatbally goodness.

I love Mom and Pops places....so this definitely is that.... Came here on a Saturday based on all the yelp reviews and was looking to try their Tri-Tip Sandwich....but it's only served Fridays. So I went with the highlighly Yelped and raved about "Meat Ball Sandwich'...oh yes it was big and meaty (looked like a good 1lb of meat, with a nice soft roll....but sorry guys it just wasn't that great.....way too much meat and not a lot of flavor (didn't end up finishing it) I did get to see the old couple that runs this place. Oh they are so cute!....Next time I hope to have better luck.

Oh. My. God. Seriously, the best meatball sandwich I've ever had. I love that it's one big meatball and they chop it up. The bread is perfect and soft and everything just fits together just right. I can't wait to go back! I mean really you can't beat a super filling, delicious, and messy sandwich for $5.50.

I've only eaten here once but knew immediately that it would become a favorite hangout for whenever I might be in this neighborhood. Paradiso is literally an oasis in an otherwise desolate area of town. On foot, you might wonder if you're getting lost, but keep going until you see the awning. Inside, you take a step back 30+ years into an old-timey Italian deli. The staff is friendly and you just can't go wrong with the menu choices. I had the much-lauded meatball sandwich. Took it to go, and then realized that it would best be consumed using a fork and knife, and perhaps an extra friend. Superb!

Go for the meatballs. Would definately order it again. Also the other cooked items looked pretty good too (not sure about the spaghetti). I like the old school feel to this place. Seriosly, don't even bother with the cold sandwiches, I ordered one and was disgusting, on par with a huge pre-made 7-11 sando. There is a reason why nearly 100 percent of the people I saw there ordered either meatballs or sasauges or anything cooked.

Finally came here for the first time last weekend and had the famous meatball sandwich and omg it did not disappoint. Service was excellent and I can't wait to return and try another sandwich. Drink selection was good. Was able to try a yummy orange dream soda.

One of my all-time favorites!! This place is a true mom and pop shop. I am proud to support an establishment like this. From the outside, it does not look like much more than an old Deli on an industrial street. BUTTT once you go in, there are pictures, antiques, memories everywhere. Owned by an old couple that literally live upstairs! They have a deli in the front, and hot cooked food in the back. Always the same menu with daily specials such as the steak sandwich. The food is true Italian, home-made, cuisine. I've been coming here for 15 years and have enjoyed the quality customer service and delicious food every trip over. Definitely have to try the meatball sandwich and the Friday steak special! Delicious, and very savory. You will defiantly not be disappointed when you give this place a try, I guarantee it!

So good! I came here for lunch a few weeks ago, and tried the meatball sandwich.. and have been dreaming about it ever since. Deciding on the meatball sandwich was actually pretty difficult. They have tons of Italian hot foods to choose from--ravioli, spaghetti, lasagna, etc--all of which could be made into hot sandwich form, if I so desired. Carb on carb? Craziness. Ultimately, I decided I couldn't handle that kind of action, so I will save that for my next visit.
