India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.
Indian food has gained reputation all over the world especially in the United States. You can find many places serving the appetizing Indian food across all major cities in the US. India is a diverse country with different food culture originated from different parts of the country. While the Northern region boasts tandoori dishes and korma offering royal taste, the Western Ghats offers sea foods that is made in naturally sweet tender coconut milk. The South Indian food servers a quality of different dishes made from rice accompanied with spicy chutneys, curries and famous sambhar. Also, the Indian sweets are a delight to relish. If you ever want to have a burst of sugar syrup in mouth, don't forget to try few Bengali Sweets. Be it spicy, tangy, or sweet flavor, you can find everything in the Indian cuisine. Be assured that the melody of spices will surely bring delight to you.

I live in OB, so I am super siked to have quality Indian food nearby. I have eaten there twice now, once inside the restaurant and again via delivery. I am a huge fan! They use plastic containers and aluminum foil, but that's because the money goes into the quality ingredients. Big chunks of chicken and veggies, and excellent, perfectly cooked naan bread. I also enjoyed their mint chutney, which was a little spicy but the perfect compliment to the spicy tandoori chicken. My only complaint, and it isn't really a complaint, is that the food takes a little bit of time. But who can complain about freshly-cooked food?? The delivery time quoted was 45 minutes and it took more like an hour, but when the food arrived, it was hot and fresh, and the delivery guy was polite and professional. Honestly, I am OK waiting a few extra minutes as long as people are cool about it and the food is still good. Same thing when I went into the joint; the cooking time took a while, maybe if I dine in again I will call it in ahead of time. Also when I got home delivery, the online ordering system is very easy to use. Go eat at this place. Small, local businesses who do a good job and deliver a quality meal for under $10 per person are just the sort of businesses we need!

My friend and I were on vacation with our parents. We searched for local Indian restaurants and got here. It is the best food. Even our parents loved it. For all the days we spent in San Diego our go to place was Sundara, best food and pricing Do not forget to try deserts

Loved this place. Was recommended by a friend and for my first time eating Indian food it was wonderful!! great service, very friendly and helpful with selections!! Definitely will be back
(5)Sara G.
Have ordered delivery from them 4 times already and the food is always delicious! We have ordered the Chicken Tikka, Tandoori Chicken, Saag Paneer, Lentil, Dal Makhani, Garlic Cilantro Naan, Sesame Naan, Raita, and the Chutneys. All of it is good! Prompt delivery - I'm very very pleased!
(5)Bec K.
Havent been here in a while but i absolutely love this place. its so good. the naan is light not dense. rice is tender not smooshy and the tiki masala is great. super nice employees too.

Stoked that Sundara opened their doors at this new location! Now more centralized in OB. It's what OB needed- a delicious Indian restaurant! We had samosas, garlic cilantro naan, dal makhani, and a chicken dish- all delicious. Rich cuisine, friendly staff, and a quaint atmosphere.

5 STARS for food. Few kinks in the servers' contribution to a sound dining experience. One was in depth discussion of smoking cigarettes in plain earshot of dining area... Nobody wants to hear employees going on and on about smoking, e cigs, hookah etc when the guests are trying to enjoy the DELICIOUS food! The other pet peeve of mine is when I specifically ask for my food to be boxed, and boxes are brought to the table for us to do it ourselves... This has been happening a lot lately and the point of eating out is to be served... I'm sorry if that sounds stuck up, but I own a small bistro myself, and it just doesn't make any sense to me, especially when the restaurant isn't packed. NONETHELESS, SUPER friendly staff, GREAT concept, EXCELLENT SIMPLE FOOD. Its just the details that leave either a great or a bad taste in the customers' mouths.

Pretty much everything on the menu is good. The servings are pretty big so I recommend coming here with a couple friends, all ordering something different, and sharing. I came with a group of six so we were able to try a little bit of everything. I would say the best order for two would be one of the two vegetarian curries, and order of Tandoori chicken, some garlic Naan, and whatever it is you prefer to drink. The Vindaloo curry is nice and spicy, which I loved, but the flavor was just wasn't as good as some of the other curries, but you can just add some spicy chutney to one of the less spicy curries and you're all set. The Naan is nice an fluffy and you can wrap up some rice and curry and feast, so good! The Tandoori chicken has a great flavor but most importantly it is not dry, it is a very delicious, moist chicken dish. They have a nice selection of craft beer for good prices as well, and they seem to want to increase their selection and be known for having great beers. They are off to a good start. The staff is incredibly friendly and it's obvious that they want you to love their new place. My only potential concern is the size of the place. The seating is a bit limited. This wasn't a problem when we went, but if/when this place starts getting more popular I can see it becoming an issue. I also like that their location is at the far end of OB and just outside of the war-zone of Newport. I will definitely be coming back.
(5)Trupti K.
I recommend the chicken tikka masala pizza - it's mouthwateringly delicious!!! all the other curries were ok... I think they have mastered the tikka masala curry... vindaloo is strictly ok... I would come back to this place only for the chicken tikka masala pizza... and for veggies - they can replace the chicken with paneer (Indian cottage cheese) Hope this review helps! Bon Apetit!
(4)Denise M.
Great food delivered to your door for a buck? Rock-on! Try the Tikka Masala Pizza...it's absolutely divine!
(5)Charles J.
This place does not live up to the hype. We've definitely have had much better Indian food. We got the Chicken Vindaloo to go in order to eat in our hotel. They didn't include any napkins or utensils. On top of that, the food was very bland and without much flavor. We were very surprised that this place is rated so high for the food! However, the naan WAS good - definitely the best part of the meal.
(2)boogiedown b.
My boyfriend and I are huge fans of Indian food so when we saw such high ratings we decided to ride our beach cruisers over to check it out. The food taste good. However, it didn't taste like Indian food? It looked like Indian food but taste nothing like it. I think the reason why the food didn't taste like "Indian Food" is because they didn't use authentic Indian spices or herbs. We literally ordered everything on their menu and were very disapointed. You might be asking yourself, "What does she mean by "authentic spices". Well, I'm glad you asked. For example, if I cook "Vietnamese" food I buy all my spices and sauces from an Asian market and not grocery stores like Ralphs or Vons. Why? Because most of the Asian products that they carry are "Americanized" (I don't know if that make sense to you) and it changes the whole taste and smell of the food when you cook w/ it. I know. I've done it before. HUGE difference. Sorry Sundara. I won't be coming back.
(2)Mark N.
Very good food. Reasonably priced. Nice indoor and outdoor seating with attentive wait staff. I thought the portions were a good size too.
(5)Melissa B.
Sundara is an awesome addition to the neighborhood. Their food is delicious!! We always order delivery: Chicken Tikka Masala, Dal Makhani, 1 garlic/cilantro naan and one garlic naan. We order online and it shows up piping hot, nicely presented and super tasty within one hour. Sundara - thanks for making delicious Indian food and then delivering it to my door!
(5)James B.
Great beer, food and service! If you want great Indian food check this place out in OB!
(5)Joyce L.
oh my ... just major deliciousness! So they set up shop in a coffee shop right by the cliff (delicious food and romantic sunset picnic anyone?), therefore their menu is ... pretty basic. Which is good for me since I could never make a decision. You can eat it there however spacing is limited! I heard Sundays were their busy days... so be prepare to eat on the cliff... oh my goooosh your life is so hard! Just kidding I got medium on my chicken (can't type... the name... of what I ordered. fail) Wow spicy! like a good spicy, not the kind of spicy that loses it's flavor. but wow. I am sort of sporadic here... going to order from them in a bit so i'll update p.s. i am staying right off the dog beach, they deliver there too!
(4)Janine D.
The best Indian food I have ever had in San Diego by far. I had the saag with paneer - outstanding. And the chicken tiki masala pizza. I liked the pizza, it's very good. I can't wait to try the tiki masala alone. I wanted more tiki sauce and less cheese but that was a personal preference. This makes my top 10 favorite restaurants list in San Diego.
(5)Sarah V.
Delicious food in a charming little restaurant. Tidy and clean place with great lighting and beautiful food presentation.
(5)jenny w.
Finally, great Indian food in San Diego! I particularly loved the perfectly cooked naan, which was great, not too greasy like most naan I've tried. We also enjoyed the chaana, the lentils and the saag paneer. Save room for the rice pudding too!
(5)Pam B.
We ate at Sundara for the third time earlier this week. We love the food and their new location. The naan is to die for....the Tiki Masala pizza is yummy. I understand that they grind all their own spices and you can really taste the flavors. We went early to beat the crowds. The service was good. The price is very reasonable. Great food at a good price. What's not to love!
(5)Vic T.
Indian Food in Ocean Beach...what more can you say??? Wait they deliver too??? I really couldn't believe it when I heard. Finally my wife asked if I wanted to get some Indian Food and I responded with the upmost glee. I patiently waited for 5pm to roll around (because that's when they open and start deliveries), I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, the Chana Curry, the Tandoori Chicken, a few pieces of Naan, and the Papadums. Myself being from an Indian background, I'm rather apprehensive when having Indian food that hasn't come from my mother or grandmothers. As far as "Americanized Indian Cuisine" is concerned, this place is amazing. Best Indian food easily within the area. The menu is small but precise. The experience was absolutely perfect. Here is the breakdown: Service: The food did take a while to get to my house, when we are only 5-10 minutes away. Though, on that note I believe it is proper to expect a 45 minute or so delivery time on any food conveniently brought to your home. The delivery guy was courteous and the food was hot. Food: First off, the Tandoori Chicken comes on a skewer of three chicken legs. They were perfectly seasoned, perfectly charred, moist, and glistened with the beautiful deep, rich crimson you expect with Tandoori Chicken...beautiful. Second, the Chicken Tikka Masala, a fine dish all in all. I do have qualms with Tikka Masala because this is actually more of a British dish than Indian. Sundura did a great job. The Chicken Tikka was a gorgeous orange and all the flavors hit their marks. The robustness of the tomato with the richness of the yogurt or cream fit so well with the spices in the masala. The coriander and paprika really calls for your attention, plus the bed of fragrant basmati rice compliments this well. Third, the Chana Curry was definitely a surprise. I couldn't believe how tangy this curry was. I found myself constantly going back for more. It became overwhelmingly addictincting. The Naan tasted like it came right from a brick oven, crispy, charred, but a nice softness within. Papadums are papadums...what really got me here was the tamarind chutney, one of my all time favorite flavors. Price: This is something I couldn't believe. I received all of this food for a little more than 30$. Brilliant...is all I have to say. Recommendations: I wish you guys were open for lunch! Also it would be great to have a few more potato dishes, lamb dishes, biriyani (for those not into hot curries), and definitely please soon...some samosas.

One day someone ordered delivery from here and I happened to catch a whiff, I immediately stopped the delivery person and asked where he worked haha. Since then, I probably order Sundara once a week, although I must say having such a limited menu has started to hinder my ability to eat the same thing over and over again. It's not super authentic, but the food is great. Remember to order Naan in copious amounts for dipping!
(4)Leah D.
SO happy to have a great spot for Indian food! My husband and I are Indian food fans, but have been underwhelmed in general with the options in San Diego. We tried Sundara and now it's our go-to spot when we want to eat out (or order in). The food here is amazing. The prices are great. The staff is super friendly. And it's a chill location. Perfect combo if you ask me :) The chicken tikka masala is my absolute favorite. Order it medium spicy. Such an incredible dish. The naan with mint chutney is delicious. Honestly, I have yet to try something here that was anything less than delicious.
(5)Nicole G.
So glad to have good Indian food & a delivery service here in OB! Been ordering from them since they opened in point loma beach cafe & the food is consistently delicious.
(5)Seb B.
What an amazing dinner we had there with the family. The food was delicious, the service was great, the location is nice and clean and the price was very reasonable. We are Indian food lovers and this restaurant is defiantly highly recommended !
(5)Michelle Z.
Really nice warm atmosphere, decent prices for good food! The samosas were really good. We got their chicken tikka masala and tandoori chicken with some naan, all tasted quite good. Glad we came here after a long day at Seaworld.

The place doubles as a different restaurant in the mornings? Anyway, it was open for dinner. Quite a tiny place, with basic furniture. The good: Passion about Indian food by the owners and chef, different presentation of the food in airplane food style boxes, yet, not cheap looking, tasty chicken tikka masala, and palak paneer, good service (free naan to munch on since we were waiting long), huge serving sizes The not so good: Wobbly furniture, not so good vindaloo, quite a basic decor, limited menu. I can see how it is a hit with folks who take food to go. You don't have to deal with two out of the 4 'not-so-good's listed above. The overall experience was ok. I would not make the drive if you don't already live in OB. It is good that this great community finally has an Indian restaurant - seems so appropriate! Would be nice if they can get a few more items on the menu, and fix that wobbly table! Update: 12/24/12 I have gotten communication from the owners/operators and thanks for taking the time to explain the way it works. Essentially it is a 'flash' restaurant where they don't even get to use the kitchen and have not much control over the decor, either. It is great that their inspiration for Indian food is what is keeping them going.
(3)Diane M.
Good ambience. Excellent service. Great food! We ordered a selection of several items & shared. They were excellent. Sat on patio in back of restaurant. Very nice.
(5)Emma M.
Tried out this new restaurant tonight and it was amazing!! I got the Chicken Tikka Masala (which is usually an Indian food favorite to most people), and it was some of the best I've had. The Garlic naan was a perfect dipping option. The best part? I didn't even have to leave my house! It so nice to have another delivery option in OB other than pizza. I'm definitely planning on making this a new regular dinner option! Many thanks to the brilliant person who came up with Sundara!
(5)ashlyn c.
Gosh, this place was so delicious. Very impressed, great atmosphere and good service! We will be back!
(5)Matt H.
My wife and I stopped here after a day around San Diego and Sunset Cliffs. We waited over 40 minutes for our food. I had the the Tandoori Chicken and I hated it. The portion size was tiny, and came with no rice or veggies. Just plain half chicken. The taste wasn't any better, no spice or flavor other than regular chicken. Very disappointing. I should have sent it back but after waiting 40 minutes we were just hungry. My wife had the Paneer Vindaloo. Waiter told us that is would be mild and she could add spice to it at the table. I had a small taste before she spiced it up and my mouth was on fire. I didn't care for the taste of it either. Neither did my wife. The spices didn't taste like the usual Indian spices you would find. Our naan was also under cooked and greasy. All in all a terrible experience. Don't trust the reviews on here. Some of the worst Indian food I've ever had.
(1)Morgane R.
The Tikka Masala was so good, we ordered it the next night. The naan are fresh, and delicious. We also had the Tandoori Chicken, which was really good, but the tikka masala stole the show. Their mint chutney is amazing with the naan, or even with the tandoori chicken. I didn't eat at the restaurant, I ordered delivery, and they were fast, the food was still hot, and the delivery guys were very friendly. It is so nice to have an Indian restaurant in OB. I would definitely go back, and recommend it to friends.
(5)Brandy M.
First time here we ordered for pick up and although we did order shortly after 9 and they close at 10 I expected our food to still be fresh, not the case, our rice was dried and I chewed on a few raw grains. Our naan was completely burnt to the point that consuming it was out of the question and our chicken was slightly on the cold side. I liked the guy over the phone he was very attentive and polite and I like that this Indian restaurant remains open till 10 unlike others in point loma but the quality wasn't there unfortunately,
(2)Alex M.
Excellent Restaurant and right by my house! I will be honest, the first time I tried this place, I was not that impressed. The service was good, but the food was so-so, the flavors were too strong and I did not enjoy it as much as I normally do when I eat Indian Food. Tonight I decided to give it another shot and I am glad that I did. The food has improved miles from its previous location, and so has the atmosphere. The beer selection was very good. Our waiter was friendly, and we even got to meet one of the owners, who was super friendly. Last but not least, the prices and the quantities of food were very reasonable. Between three people we ordered two entrees and the garlic naan bread, and it was enough that I will have lunch for tomorrow.
(5)Natural N.
I heard of this place on the radio and then from some friends. I ordered through the website which was so easy a child could do it. Then delivery showed up way faster than I had anticipated and piping hot. The delivery guy was very courteous and professional. My wife and I shared two curries and some naan and the delicious portions were so generous that we could not finish it all in one sitting. Everything was amazing! We will definitely be ordering from here again. I also appreciated that when I requested they indicate which items could be made vegan on the menu, they did so on the website before the next time I ordered. It would be awesome vegan chapatti were added to the bread menu.
(5)Ross P.
Best Indian food in San Diego, my wife and I eat here at least once a month. Now that they have a patio and beer & wine, it's even better.
(5)Michele G.
We've been here three times now, once at the old place and twice at the new. It's been fantastic every time! I love the small menu- simple and we have had a chance to try just about everything, and everything is delicious! Last night we shared the chicken tikka masala pizza for an appetizer-YUM!! We've ordered the tandoori chicken every time and it's always great. We tried the channa masala last time and the saag w/ peneer- both were great. Oh, and don't forget the naan- sesame and garlic/cilantro. The service is excellent and they have a nice selection of draft and bottled beer. Can't wait to go back. We live in east county so it's a little bit of a trek for us, but well worth it. Our kids, ages 12 & 14, love it! Almost forgot, the rice pudding is a perfect finish.
(5)T P.
Indian food...in OB? Wait... DELICIOUS Indian food...in OB!! Ordered for Delivery last night and was very impressed. We ordered the Tikka Masala with chicken, the Saag with Paneer, and 2 types of naan with Cucumber Raita. All were enjoyable (we ate everything), but I must say the Tikka Masala blew us away. The guy on the phone recommended medium heat and it was perfect. Complex flavors, beautiful color and the tenderest chicken I have EVER had in ANY curry dish I have EVER ordered. Yay! Ocean Beach is lucky to have this new spot.
(4)Jon C.
You know it is just alright. It has a lot of potential because is a hip and trendy place inside plus they do take out and even delivery. The problem is that the food is like a white man's take on Indian food. It didn't seem very authentic even though it still had good flavor and it was pretty cheap. Plus if you are waiting for your take out you can watch the wild green parrots flying in the nearby palm trees.
(3)Dallas T.
They just moved this week to their new location about 10 blocks from the old communal kitchen and closer to commercial OB. Still doing great business with good food!
(4)William L.
Insanely good. Sure, sometimes you have to wait and there are a few kinks in the system but it's OB. It's a different way of life and it isn't LA - and that we are thankful.
(5)Larry S.
This place was directly across from where we stayed and we ate there the first night. We were tired and hungry and we have both eaten Indian cuisine and liked it. Everything that we ordered was great. I must admit that we ordered take-out so I am not sure about service or things like that but I can say we got what we ordered, there was plenty of it and it all tasted great!
(4)Christopher S.
This place is excellent. All of the curries are delicious, the naans are amazing. Who would have known it was in that dinky little beach cafe at night. Super impressed and happy that theres even more delicious food in Ocean Beach! I personally don't mind wobbly furniture or any of that jazz but some people do, so be warned that it looks nothing like an indian restaurant would, and hopefully it doesn't stop you.
(5)Tom W.
Really Good. That's all I got to say!
(5)K D.
Oh my god, y'all. Not really a delivery household as we live in OB, and really, how lazy do you have to be when you're a couple blocks in both directions from food? Turns out we answered that question last night: you have to be exactly as lazy as a rowdy weekend leaves you on Sunday night. Not wanting to waste our laziness gimme on pizza, we consulted the interweb and were super stoked to try this place. We live on the other side of town, and I walk my dog past the spot daily---so I knew my current state of lazy was not going to allow a 25 minute walk or even a bike ride. An easy online order, a reasonable 50 minute wait, and what turned out to be the best thing I've put in my mouth in ages arrived. Munchie and hungry, but not SO hungry, we decided to split Tika Masala, Paneer and Garlic Cilantro Naan---with a side of Mint Chutney. Delivered by a cheerful fella to an excited me! Every single bit was perfect. The Tika Masala was the perfect spice and a really amazing...consistency (just creamy enough) and the Naan was delicious. The chutney was hotter than expected, but I regretted getting only one. The rice made me happy---just the way I try to cook it at home but end up with crunchy sadness masked as rice. While this is definitely more like "take away" curry in the UK than a purist's expectations of Indian food, it has quickly become the most dangerous culinary threat to my waistline and my wallet in this town. Not to say it's expensive. We spent $14 plus tip to be extremely well fed on really nice food. Felt much better about that then spending the same amount on pizza. And a $1 delivery charge? Bananas. Let me say this: the portions are generous enough to do as we did and split. That said, I'll never do that again. We each ate a good amount of this amazing stuff, and realized there would still be a portion of leftovers. Knowing that while we were politely offering it to each other, there would be unspoken, burning white hot hard feelings if either accepted and was parted from the last precious bit....we forced down (we'll go with forced down) the last portion on the spot. Truth be told, he's a great guy and I'm glad we did that for the sake of our friendship, but I would have gladly gone to battle over the leftovers. It was that good. In summation: give these guys a try. If they don't get enough business to survive I will weep. I hope they consider a frequent flyer card, because I'm probably going to be ordering with embarrassing frequency.
(5)Rishi K.
This place is surprisingly awesome! Its a small setup, not for large groups but nice and clean, I think its a best place if u want take outs. We had Daal makhani (curry) .. it was delicious. Garlic and plain naan was also good. Prices are very reasonable. It was such a gr8 feeling to have nice Indian food for dinner when I was too hungry :) . Do check it out if you are visiting San Diego Sea World.
(5)steffanie s.
I don't know how I've lived in OB for this long and never been to Sandara until now! So delicious, great service and nice atmosphere. The restaurant is quite small, so maybe not the best place for a party larger than four. The menu is reasonably priced and everything tasted fresh and flavorful.
(5)Blair O.
This place is delicious! My husband and I just left and were Very satisfied. The menu is very limited but the simplicity is nice, especially for those not familiar with Indian food. The tandoori chicken was unbelievable and so was the raifi. My husband got the chicken tikka marsala. The chicken was perfect in the sauce. The rice could have more flavor but was still good. The restaurant is small but they have a good drink selection. Staff is awesome and very attentive! Prices are very fair for both drinks and food. A good find!
(5)Sindhu B.
This is my visit to san diego.i searched for indian restaurants and found sundara through yelp.though its indian restaurant i am surprised to see american chefs. To my surprise the food they cooked is really delicious.i have ever tasted that good samosa before.thats awesome samosa.garlic naan is also siperb.very good service.
(5)Theo S.
I've only gotten their delivery, in fact I've never even seen the restaurant. In general the food is decent. I've had the Vindaloo chicken and the Tikka Masala. Both were tasty, but not exceptional. Perhaps I'm a bit spoiled having moved from an area saturated with Indian restaurants and people. On the plus side, everything tastes very fresh and homemade and their naan is great!
(3)Jenn Y.
This is amazing Indian Cuisine. I got the tikka masala, sesame naan, and samosas with tamarind + mint cutney. The prices are very reasonable, and the food is fantastic! Very strong flavors( not too spicy or sweet just perfect!). Great service, and great food. Could you ask for anything more?
(5)Shocka N.
Soooo happy OB finally has an Indian restaurant! It is tasty and fresh. I am a "curry snob". Always a good sign when you see actual Indian families eating there. The folks who run it are nice too!
(5)Tamera I.
Great food. Good service. It was busy when we came in and had to sit on the patio. It was a little cold. Otherwise it was a good experience.
(4)Alexandria K.
I stumbled upon Sundara, with a friend, while in pursuit of a smoothie. The only complaint I have is that the sign on the front of the building is for the smoothie place and in the late afternoon, the restaurant turns into Sundara, an Indian food hub. I had the Paneer (cheese) Vindaloo (spicy) Curry and it was fantastic! There was a good rice to sauce ratio and it was seasoned to perfection. In addition I had the garlic naan which was hot, buttery and garlicky. I would definitely come again and I plan to, so I can try more of the curries. Overall, a great Indian restaurant in OB!
(5)Brick W.
Took the wife here after seeing it from the gas station across the street a month or so ago. I checked the Yelp reviews and it looked promising. It was kind of odd that the owner/operators are all american and not Indian. The head chef is a mechanical engineer [?] that is self taught on how to prepare Indian food. Which made me apprehensive. But the food was good all in all. The Tandoori Chicken was good and cooked all the way through. The curry we got was good and hot. Although a bit bitter, but i attribute that to me ordering it extra hot. I will get it prepared normally next time and see if it's better. All the items here are prepared in to go containers even if you order it to have there, which is fine. Especially since there a new start up and sharing the space with another type of restaurant that runs the place in the mornings. This was a bit of an odd config i thought but it seems to work for them. They only sell the items that they provide, so the coolers will have pieces of cardboard in them with 2 rows of drinks and the like in them. The items behind the cardboard are sold in the mornings when it's running at a breakfast cafe. They have a pretty up to date POS system and do call in/email in orders and have a small delivers radius for the locals. All in all I will go back and look forward to it.
(4)Jen T.
Love this place. I'm so glad they opened up a nice restaurant with a cute little patio.

We have been ordering take out from Sundara since they opened down the street. The new location is very nice, I love the cozy patio in back. The food and service is amazing! I have a small "wish list" for the new location... 1. My husband, who is allergic to poultry, would love a fish option for the Tikka Masala. Halibut, Mahi, or Ono would work great. 2. Offer brown basmati rice. 3. House brewed iced tea. I'm not a fan of the bottled, sweetened green tea.
(4)Ivonne V.
I really like the food here!! and they have mango lassi now, thumbs up! But why will they give you a plastic recipient even when you eat in, not very fan of the unconsciousness about caring for the environment, you can throw the recipient in the recycle bin, but come on... lets face it, just 20% of all the plastics get recycle and this process (recycling) needs tons of oil...! So why choosing plastic, from the beginning? Right...? Tonight, we were heading to have dinner there, but just the thought of contributing on the pile of plastic, made us go somewhere else. :(
(3)Joji T.
The best Indian food I ever ate in US. Started with samosa and ordered every dish on the menu. Don't miss the Tikka Masala.
(5)mike l.
I'm so glad to have an indian restaurant in ob, especially one that delivers! I just got delivery again last nite and had some left-overs for lunch! the kheer is different than others i've had, but it's sooo good i had to order two of them last nite just for myself. keep up the good work Sundara, i'll be placing an order again soon!
(4)Sharon W.
I was a little skeptical when I walked in and noone there was Indian. But it smelled FANTASTIC. My husband and I ordered the Chicken Vindaloo, the Tandoori chicken, 1 plain Naan, 1 garlic Naan, and some Raita for dipping. When I come back, and I will, I think I will order takeout and sit on the cliffs and watch the sunset. The location couldn't be more perfect. The Vindaloo was very appropriately spiced. It had the good strong flavors and heat that you would expect from a proper Vindaloo. The Tandoori chicken was amazing--the best Tandoori chicken I have ever had. The Raita was more like a greek Tsaziki, rather than a traditional Raita. Much thicker with huge chunks of cucumber--I prefer it that way :) I personally prefer the plain Naan, but the garlic Naan had great garlic flavor. A lot like eating flat garlic bread. It just isn't what I associate with Indian food but delicious none the less. I also ordered the Mango Lassi--only thing I was slightly disappointed about. I was expecting something sweeter and lighter. It is like drinking a very thick, slightly flavored, yogurt drink.

It's a shame because Indian food is my favorite and this establishment is 2 blocks from where I live but I really did not care for it. I ordered using their online ordering system; the wait time was long and even after showing up on time I still had to wait a while. Not a big deal really if the food is good but it wasn't. :( I ordered the chicken tikka masala and it tasted extremely tomatoey. I know tomatoes are an ingredient but it shouldn't taste like Italian food. I feel like chicken tikka masala is one of those dishes that is kinda hard for a restaurant to mess up too, it is usually pretty decent even when it sucks. But not here! It was so bad I haven't even had the guts to try out their other dishes.
(1)Gillian H.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in OB! I was a huge fan from the beginning and I now really love their new restaurant space. I pretty much crave it once a week!
(5)Rob P.
Great little place in Pont Loma / OB. They deliver too! ;) standard Indian cuisine, fresh taste, and if dining in, a quaint place to grab a bite. Would give 5 stars, but the 'spiciness' consistency is not there, nothing bad for adults, but for a 8 year old it is enough to notice.
(4)Stu B.
The atmosphere is great in that place at night. They really do a good job. The Tikka Masala is to die for. The naan bread also. I'd eat there every night if I could!
(5)Jorge V.
This is one of San Diego's best restaurants. I moved here from New York and have been missing nice local places to eat that I can just walk to, until I stumbled across this place. Great food, great staff, good beer selection, all at a reasonable price. Try sitting on the back patio, it is the perfect intimate little date spot. I always start with the Samosas and a Great White Lager, then get the Tikka Masala or Saag with panner or vegetables and a side of their garlic Naan bread. It does not come spicy, but you can ask for more heat if that is what you want. There is hardly ever a wait, but I am afraid with the quality of the place that reservations may soon be necessary! Enjoy.

I'm an Indian and don't think I ever want to go to another indian restaurant after discovering Sundara! It is a tiny hole in the wall kinda place and definitely super casual but does not go over board with the usual cliched Indian restaurant decor. In my opinion their food speaks for itself- Tried their tikka masala and vindaloo- both were excellent and so flavorful!!! Their cilantro and tamarind chutneys were so so good...can't wait to go back for some saag paneer and channa masala. another HUGE plus for me: the mango lassi was so refreshingly different- for once I did not feel like I'm going to go into a diabetic coma after a sip- just the right amount of sweet and tartness to the drink.
(5)Christina A.
There could only be a place like this in OB. The food is delicious. I appreciate the small menu. They deliver, which is awesome... but I think the best experience is in the restaurant. A few tables, food in take out containers with plastic utensils. Its a hilariously awesome place.
(4)Deepak D.
I am an Indian and went there with my family of 4. All of us liked the food very much. Pros: + Very good food + Make it spicy or mild, your call + Good Service/Nice people + Simple restaurant/unpretentious + Relatively cheap + Probably the best Indian in San Diego/I have eaten everywhere. Cons: - Small place -Street Parking
(5)David B.
This is my first ever review but thought that a small (worthy) start-up joint like this deserves it. I was in town for a conference and was craving some dank Indian cuisine. Only so many fish tacos one can eat. I heard from a local friend that I had to try this new place Sundara in OB. So I stopped into this quaint (and clean!) joint to grab a quick bite. It totally caught me off guard. I was not prepared for the wonderful flavors (I ordered tikka massala and nann). Hint: Place a few chicken chuinks into the warm nann bread sandwich-style! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It was off the chizzain! The beer selection was pretty dizzzope too. You can tell whoever orders that beer has done some research. Pale ales just pair so well with Indian food. I should also mention that the prices are super reasonable. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
(5)Laurian R.
Some of the best Indian food I've had anywhere. The menu is limited, the place doesn't have a sign out front, but everything is prepared "ala minute", to order and its fresh and delicious. The chicken tikka masala was about the perfect blend of spice and creaminess. And the portions are big. Super casual, surfer vibe, very laid back.. Getting hungry just thinking about it!
(4)Jesus R.
Before Sundara, pizza was pretty much the only thing available by delivery in OB unless you wanted to pay one of those delivery services. I really like Sundara, but have never been to the restaurant. The on-line ordering is easy. They normally delivery fairly quickly. The delivery guys are nice and polite. I am fine with the spiciness level. The prices are fine. I like the food, etc. But how about making BROWN RICE available?! We have been asking for it since the beginning and have been told it would soon be on the menu. It is probably a good idea to ask for the spiciness level too IMO. Overall, i give it a very positive review and am very happy they are in OB!
(5)Barbara K.
This place is awesome! We were a little skeptical at first, but were blown away at the awesomeness of this tiny place. 1. If you see a sign for "Point Loma Beach Cafe" you're at the RIGHT place, park and go in! 2. Most orders are to-go, but there are 4 inside tables and 2 outdoor tables. Nice little setting, not a bad place to eat. Not to mention, only steps away from the ocean. 3. Walk up and order counter. 4. Food = phenomenal, nice sized portions (neither of us finished, awesome leftovers) 5. Sodas $1, Naan $1.50... dang! All major credit cards accepted, including AE 6. Easy parking when we went on Sunday around 7pm 7. Everyone is super friendly 8. Open till 10pm, which is great because we always eat late 9. We ate in, but delivery is only $1 (insert "WHA?!") Will absolutely be back again
(5)Christina G.
Yay to expertly prepared fast Indian Food in Ocean Beach! Simple, delicious menu, great for take out, delicious mango lassi. I only wish I could order the Chutney in a large portion. Note: you must order he naan separately, but it's worth it. Check this place out!
(5)Steve G.
GEM!! Ordered pretty much everything on the menu and had it delivered in about 45 minutes. I have no complaints. It's awesome to finally have some great Indian food in OB at a great price point. The only suggestion I have which isn't necessarily a criticism would be to add lamb to the entree options. Otherwise, everything was excellent and the people are super friendly. Just made one of my favorite establishments in the morning even better at night!!!
(5)michelle l.
Amazing 1st time tasting of Indian food! Incredible explosion of flavors! So glad I stopped by w/ Sue to have a late lunch. The Samosa appetizer was tasty as well as the Tikka Masala, Saag+, and warm naan sesame flat bread= yum. Large quantities, great prices. Very clean with amazingly friendly staff. I can't wait to come back with friends!
(5)Carrie O.
So delicious, and such a great value!! My husband and I ordered delivery (yay, I love delivery!!!) from Sundara tonight, and we both loved it! I had the Dal Makhani, which even at a mild spice level was slightly spicy for me (but still quite delicious). My husband had the Channa Masala (medium spice), which was really good as well. He loved it. I think I'd probably order his dish (only mild spice) next time! The naan bread is delish too, and I definitely recommend trying both the cilantro garlic naan & the regular. With tax, tip & delivery fee (only 1 dollar :) it was about 26.50 for SO MUCH FOOD. We have two boxes of rice left over (note to self, the dishes COME with rice, too, so on the side isn't totally necessary, ha), and I have half of my entree left as well! And I'm stuffed! I'm hooked. We'll definitely be regulars! :)
(5)Kara G.
I'm so glad that we found this place! I was craving something quick & spicy but didn't feel like picking something up so my boyfriend made the call & delivery was fast & super friendly! The Chana masala was phenom!! Each dish was a very generous serving (at least 2 big servings-perfect for lunch the next day!) and came with naan bread...all delivered for $20 total!!! I'm a huge Indian food fan & have never found a place that was this good, fast, and inexpensive. We will keep coming back for sure!
(5)Carrie G.
This is a new place, open at night in the Point Loma Beach Cafe location, and it is gooooood! They just opened and we've already eaten here 5 times. So far I've had the tandoori chicken, which I have ordered every time. It's super moist and flavorful, and when paired with their raita and fresh baked naan... Ridiculous. Best raita and naan I've ever had. We've also had the tikka masala, channa masala and vindaloo, all amazing (prepare yourself for some heat with the vindaloo)! It's my go-to dinner option now, love it!
(5)Josh K.
A small place with a lovely back patio. Menu is relatively small, but the food is delicious (including as leftovers the next day). The staff was all very friendly and helpful.
(4)Tamara L.
So delish. Seriously I could eat this every night. Got the tikka masala with the paneer and a side of garlic naan. So good.
(5)Erin R.
All I can say is this new establishment is awesome! I love that I can order indian food in OB and it is really reasonably priced. The presentation of the food is great and something I hadn't seen before. They put the rice in the same plate as the dishes making it easy to serve and all of the food stays hot. The food itself is also great. We had the tikki masala chicken, palak panneer, garlic cilantro naan, and tamarind chutney. I had zero complaints about any of the food. The menu is minimalist, but the quality of the food definitely makes up for it. You can't beat the small $1 delivery charge and the delivery guy was really nice and delivered in a reasonable time. All in all, I hope this place sticks around and strongly recommend that everyone gives it a try. You will not be disappointed!
(5)Mica H.
What a wonderful, much needed addition to OB. All the food I've tried has been fabulous (Saag Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, Dal Makhani, raita, and nan), and when you ask for 'spicy' you actually get it. The menu is a bit limited, but but I definitely understand keeping it simple while they're getting the place going, and what they do they do very well. The dining room isn't much to speak of, but since they deliver in OB for just $1, who cares? And how can you beat healthy, tasty dinner for 2 for just $20? Can't recommend Sundhara enough!
(5)Darren H.
My best friend growing up was Indian-- so while a few menu items are "Americanized" most are authentic and taste awesome. My favorite item is the tikki masala. The naan is good-- the texture of the cheese naan is awesome but I also love the flavor of the garlic naan. My second favorite is the Saag, but trust me, get the tikki masala! The atmosphere is cute, but my husband and I prefer this place when we don't feel like cooking and want to stay at home.
(5)Dominic A.
This is by far the, best Indian food since moving to San Diego. Amazing food, Nice decor, great people. Inexpensive. Two of us 2 mango Lassie (sp) 4 orders of nan, and two entrees for 30 bucks. AMAZING. Best part is, that its in OB!
(5)Alexandra G.
Love this place. The delivery is quick (and only $1 extra), the service is great, the portions are more than enough, and the food is spectacular. Of all the of items on the menu, the Chicken Tikka Masala is by far my favorite; however, I've tried and enjoyed it all. Sundara satisfies my Indian food cravings (which I have all the time, but too often before they open at 5pm or when they're closed on Tuesdays), although traditional Indian food enthusiasts may find it slightly Americanized in flavor.
(4)Danny F.
Finally! OB got an Indian restaurant! It's a little breakfast/coffee shop in the mornings, then apparently converts to serving Indian in the evenings. I had heard about it from a neighbor so I strolled over and was pleasantly surprised. They had about 5 different kinds of sauce/entre combinations, with a few different naans. I ordered the vindaloo (spicy) and chinna masala and was quite happy.
(4)Chere T.
We had a taste for Indian food and were surprised to find this little gem less than a mile from our house. I had the Tikka Masala and it was excellent. Not only that, but the portion was so big, it fed me for lunch the next day too. I highly recommend it. We ordered take-out. The food was done when it was promised and the people are friendly.
(5)Kaliko Y.
Love, Love, Love this place. It is so good that I had take out here 2 nights in a row. I have ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, Tandoori Chicken, Cilantro and Garlic Naan, Mint Chutney, Side of Chicken. Delicious. They also deliver for $1 extra, definitely worth it. The menu is not extensive, but it is so good. They are friendly, reasonably price. If you are looking for a local business and are craving good Indian food, you must try this place. It's a keeper.
(5)Shala L.
This place is awesome! Exceptional! Cannot wait to eat there again!
(5)Alex T.
Awesome Indian food in ob! Their food is great and delivery is cheap.
(5)Chris B.
just ate there the other day and i've got say it was dang good. the restaurant is nice inside (as it was when it was kecho's, they haven't changed much), with a nice covered patio outside. we had the saag paneer and channa masala with some garlic naan and a couple chutneys. super-tasty and the decent-sized portions made it plenty to split for 2 (brought home enough for a small meal, also). absolutely reasonably priced beer and wine, too. i'm going back soon, i've gotta figure. oh, people saying the service was slow because of all the take-out going on? i didn't witness it.
(4)Kathleen M.
Just discovered this gem. And I live within a mile. Awesome, delicious and delivered piping hot within a half hour for just $1. Tikka Masala mild was plenty spicy and very flavorful. Garlic naan. Will definitely become a regular. You gotta give it a try!
(5)Rachel G.
still totally awesome ( we literally just finished our meal) jog on haters this place kicks ass
(5)Mike S.
We've now been waiting over 90 minutes for delivery. Maybe you're better off going to the restaurant. If the food is amazing, I might come back and give a food review -- but so far, the service is atrocious.
(1)Sam P.
Just had the Chicken Saag delicious and perfect rice to saag ratio. The Raita was awesome as well with real cucumbers chucks, and they deliver which makes it a golden gem in OB. Hope this place stays around for a long time and looking forward to trying new items as they add them. Well done. ~s
(5)Michelle B.
Good location, nice patio, decent service, fair pricing, and large portions. 1st time and love love us some good indian, its not the best but quite limited options in San Diego sadly. Ordered samosas which were flaky and both sauces were delicious. The veggie tikka was nice along with the garlic naan. We like it spicy so asked for our dish spicy which they were a bit reluctant to do and brought us chili on the side. Regardless we will be back!
(4)Justin l.
Had delivery to our house. Came very fast and were very friendly. Food was very good! The only reason its not 5 stars is that its a very small menu and they need to offer some lamb!!!!!
(4)Catherine W.
Oh, blessed be our benevolent Annapurna! Fantastic Indian food has finally arrived in San Diego! Awesome tikka masala and palak paneer, and don't miss the cilantro naan! Lovely service and quick delivery by genuinely nice people. New Ocean Beach favorite!
(5)James M.
This restaurant is built on an interesting concept. The place is a Beach Cafe at day time and a small "whole in the wall" Indian Restaurant at night. The interior is therefor not Indian, they can't use the cutlery etc. but it is a fun way to be economical, and we appreciated that. The menu is small, but the have some variations of dishes. We both had the Chicken Tikka Masala, medium spicy. Yes, we are not the best with spices, but we don't want to think about how spicy the spicy would have been if that was medium! We both wish we had gone with mild. The sauce was also a bit too salty. The naan breads however were really good. - part of me wish I just had that for my meal. Fun place to try if you are in the area (great area to watch the sunset), but probably not worth planning to drive out here for the restaurant only.
(3)Nacho S.
I've only been there once, but my wife and I had a very pleasant experience. We sat out on a little enclosed, outdoor patio and enjoyed very decent food and wine. And even though it was totally packed, the service was excellent.
(4)Ruthie S.
I've patronized Sundara three times - ordered takeout online, ordered takeout by phone, and ate at the restaurant. Every time the order process was smooth, the order was correct, and the staff was pleasant. The food was generous and well priced. Tikka masala was great, and the appetizers were pretty good. I can understand the reviews that say the food isn't completely authentic - it does seem like some complexity is missing, but I'm not enough of an Indian food fan to say exactly what. But we live close by, so it's nice to have something different in the neighborhood and I'm sure we'll be back.
(4)Mary F.
I was visiting family in San Diego last week and had heard about Sundara as being a new business featuring excellent, affordable, take-out Indian cuisine. I ordered Tandoori Chicken and Saag along with the Garlic & Cilantro Naan. It was the most delicious, vibrant, fresh Indian food I've ever had. Two days later I went back and tried the Tikka Masala and Channa Masala with the plain and sesame Naan. Again - heaven! I was sorry to leave San Diego but will look forward to my next opportunity to visit Sundara - it was that good!
(5)Karen W.
Indian food is my favorite. In the past, it has made my boyfriend physically ill within minutes of eating it. He suggested trying Sundara, knowing how sad I am without Indian food in my life. This is the first restaurant IN HIS LIFE that doesn't make him ill when he eats it. I always thought it was a seasoning he had an allergy to but since he orders the same dish here as he does everywhere else (Tikki Masala) I have to assume that Sundara just makes fresh food to order with high quality ingredients. He now requests Sundara for dinner. Happy me.
(5)Laura G.
Finally, tasty Indian food and it delivers - a wonderful addition to OB! The menu is limited, but everything we ordered was tasty, it was delivered quickly, and we could order online. Perfect for those nights where you want to stay in, eat yummy food, and not spend a fortune, and not wait forever.
(5)Jenna M.
The chicken tikka masala was very good, spicy even at the mild level which means a good Indian restaurant! This place is affordable and they deliver which is great. The only reason for the 4 stars is that I have had better Indian food elsewhere were the flavors were more pronounced.
(4)Marie J.
I desperately wanted to like the place as I know the owners are local and have many friends in the neighborhood and I was very excited about the possibility of good, local Indian food. Unfortunately, while the people working there are quite pleasant, the food is just really not good. Having lived in India and had some incredible Indian this is not even close and I wouldn't return. The rice was adequate but the curries tasted like someone had poured in a lot of spices without giving any thought to meshing them well or layering the flavors. It tasted worse than the curries at Trader Joe's, and even the garlic naan was somehow cardboard-tasting. I'm mystified about all the high reviews. I read in a review from the OB paper that they don't make the food there which may contribute to the problem.
(1)N V.
Tikka masala and garlic naan are delicious! I almost don't want to write this, just so I can keep the secret all to myself. Can't give it 5 starts, because veggie dishes are kind of skimpy on veggies, and probably a little Americanized for Indian food.
(4)Eisha V.
Though the menu was limited, it was still the best Indian food. As an Indian, this is the best Indian food that's not home cooked. I was especially pleased with the naan. It's ironic, no one there is indian and yet the food is amazing.
(5)Liz W.
So happy to have a new dining option on "cooking embargo" nights. Have gotten food to go twice now. First time we got saag paneer and chicken vindaloo with garlic naan. The next time we opted for vegetarian with saag and dal makhani, again with a side of garlic naan. Good, spicy, basic Indian and a welcome addition to OB.
(4)Mel M.
This place is awesome. Whenever I am craving Indian food, I usually go to the Taste of the Himalayas on Midway...delicious as well but also very pricy and midway traffic sucks. Anyway, I walked into this place at 955pm last Sunday night. I was out running errands all day and didn't eat much so I was starving. Needless to say, even though they were clearly cleaning up and getting ready to shit-it-down, as soon as we walked in they were HAPPY to hook up a to-go order. They told us not to worry about coming in so late, made us feel very much at home. Also, do not be surprised by the white guys making your food....they're damn good at what they do. My boyfriend and i shared paneer tikki masala, garlic naan and a drink. There was a generous amount of paneer (usually places are stingy) and it was only ten bucks; more importantly, It was DAMN good and I'll be going back for more again and again. Thank you guys. Nothing beats being able to walk a block, pick up DELICIOUS food, and not pay an arm and a leg. Summer just got better....
(5)Mari F.
Delicious, FRESH, traditional Indian cuisine. They deliver to Point Loma and Ocean Beach. The naan is exceptional and baked in their own tandoori oven every day. Locals doing an excellent job. Delicious curries, jasmine rice. A must try!
(5)Leslie G.
Finally gave Sundara another shot. This time we got take out. Ordering on their website was super easy. Everything was hot and ready when I arrived. We had the channa masala and dal makhani. Both were great, I'd get the same order again. We also got regular naan and garlic cilantro naan (which I didn't eat due to my aversion to cilantro - vile weed!). The naan was great. Side of raita was also great. I really appreciated the packaging for the to go order. I usually avoid getting takeout because I hate all the styrofoam waste, the food is usually spilling out of the packaging, and sometimes the portion size is smaller for takeout, so it will fit in the box. We didn't have any of those problems with the takeout at Sundara. I would absolutely get take out again, but I still don't think I'd try eating at the restaurant after our first experience.
(5)T L.
I come here every time I'm in OB. THE best Indian food I've had in San Diego. Staff is very friendly and food gets to you quickly. Location is great, they have an outdoor seating area with tons of plants and candle lighting. It can be pretty busy during weekends and when you get in they'll ask for a phone number and send an automated text when they are ready for you, which is very efficient. Take a walk down Newport and back and they'll be ready for you. Definitely worth trying, I took two of my friends who had never had Indian food and they absolutely loved it.
(5)Jeb H.
Sundara is a good Indian restaurant with some very tasty dishes! They've also done something really smart, which is offering delivery in Ocean Beach and Point Loma. Since OB is perpetually 420, I'm sure they are making a killing with their delivery service (you can order through Yelp or on their website)! Just be patient as delivery usually takes 45 mins-1.5 hours. I have ordered several items for delivery, and most of them are really good while a couple are "meh." My favorite item has to be their Spicy Baby Back Ribs appetizer. It comes with two large, very tender, baby back ribs in a dish with a really delicious dark sauce. True to it's name, the sauce is a bit spicy, but just the right amount! I like the sauce so much that I also order a plain Naan because it's perfect for dipping in the sauce. Also good is the order of Samosas. Two very crispy samosas are in each order, and they're packed with a mix of vegetables including potatoes and peas. I love that they come with both a tamarind sauce and a mint chutney because they impart two very distinct and different flavors to the samosas. I've also had the rice pudding, which is OK but it's too runny. The Chicken Tiki Masala was mediocre because I think the sauce could use a kick of some additional spices. Judging by the Yelp reviews, some people love the Tiki Masala, but it tasted kind of "blah" to me. I'll still order delivery, and some day I may actually trek to the restaurant itself.

Wow, this place had the best ambience I have seen in an Indian restaurant in US. Very creatively designed interior, themed really well, each and everything looked perfectly in sync with the theme. Nothing was out of place. All in all a perfect place to have dinner. Coming to food, short menu could be a negative for some people but I believe it gives them the option to concentrate on what they are best at rather than cramping hundreds on items and none of them tasting well. I loved the food. We literally ordered almost half the menu and everything was perfectly cooked. Chicken was tender and exactly the way i expected it to be. We asked them to make it spicy, and probably one of the rare occasions when the spice level was perfect. All in all, a must go if you are in San Diego and want to try some Indian food. Can't wait to be there again.
(5)Adam T.
I was stoked for this highly rated Indian restaurant so close to my house. It took me a while to get out here just because it was on the back burner. I actually swung by here one time on a Tuesday but they were closed. One of my favorite Indian dishes is vegetarian vindaloo but it was my least favorite dish I tasted at Sundara. It was just too tangy and acidic tasting. I also found the ordering system a little impersonal. You just check off what you want on a piece of paper and hand it to your server. Everything else was just fine but I just wasn't as excited leaving as I was going in.
(3)James K.
A friend recommended this place and I'm happy they did. It's quite out of the way for me, but given all the positive reviews, I was eager to try. It's right on a main road going into Ocean Beach and very easy to find. Parking is another thing. There is street parking but it's quite limited. I came on a Sunday evening and it was quite full. Always a good sign. Even though they were quite full, they still had a couple of open tables and we had no reservations. We were seated immediately on the back patio. The main dining area inside is quite small and most of the tables seem made for two, but they can easily accommodate a table of four (or more I suppose). The menu is quite limited but full of the traditional meals one would expect in an Indian restaurant. We had the garlic/cilantro naan bread to start with. It was somewhat greasier than I expected and under cooked. We both had the Tikka Masala with chicken. The basmati rice was average at best and the chicken was quite dry. The Tikka Masala sauce did taste as expected. The portion was quite adequate and despite first serving of bread, we ordered more and it just came out the same; kind of soggy and for something with garlic and cilantro, while I could certainly see it on the bread, I couldn't taste it. I had black iced tea to drink and this was quite disappointing as it tasted like something instant. I would absolutely be shocked if they say it's brewed. But what is really shocking is that most fast food restaurants serve fresh brewed iced tea so it's sad that I have to have instant tea at a place like this. The restaurant is quite nice and definitely very quaint. They also serve quite a few local microbrews. But the menu is limited and the food was average at best. Kind of a fun place to try but honestly there are many other truly great Indian restaurants in San Diego.
(3)Adam P.
Solid! It is one of the only good places to get food in Ocean Beach
(4)Chuck H.
Disclaimer, I'm a white boy, but this place is impressive. It looks more like a window display from the street, and it is small, but is also very fast and tasty. I've never had to wait. Menu is short and simple. So far so good after about 5 visits. I would recommend it for people that might normally feel intimidated or avoid Indian food. The garlic naan is a little over the top, as much as I love butter and garlic. But it is OB, you won't find any real Indian people here unless they're lost. I think they even have craft beer.
(5)Ross B.
Small restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Small, but well balanced menu. Appetizers were good, entree was good and so was the dessert. Would visit again.

We have been to this great, local restaurant at least 20 times and have had consistently good food and service each time. The appetizer pizza sounds strange, but it is tasty and worth a try. For vegetarians, they will sub paneer for the chicken. The tikka masala with veggies is my all-time favorite. The sauce is perfectly spiced. The samosas are also a favorite as is the cilantro garlic naan. They have reasonably priced beer and wine too! What more could you ask for?

So, I think living in Nor-Cal for 2.5 years has ruined Indian food for me. For whatever reason, Indian restaurants there are plentiful and amazing. Ever since I moved back to SD I have not been able to find anything that compares. Sundara is not bad by any means, it was a convenient fix for my indian cuisine craving. What makes this place even better is that they deliver (dangerous commodity, really) From here I've had the samosas, masala paneer, saag paneer, several types of naan.... and while everything is good, the real winner for me were the samosas, specially with the tamarind sauce. They were of good proportion, seasoned to perfection, filled with all the right stuff and not super oily. Also, perfect to share with someone. Trust me, if you're here order the samosas! Long story short, Sundara is one of the best indian restaurants in the OB area. If you're feeling lazy and don't want to get off the couch and stop with the House of Cards binge watching.... just pick up your phone and place the order. That may or may not have been exactly what I did. (Hint: it was. )

Really wonderful Indian food! You cannot go wrong with any of their currys! It comes with a big bowl of rice and the naan is super good too. The prices are really inexpensive! Also on Wednesdays there's a discount on bottles of wine! They've got a cool back patio as well. I don't think it's dog friendly. It is however pretty classy! You won't be underdressed but it is a really nice place. They also do a lot of to-go orders. Loved this place. Fine dining in a casual setting. Really excellent food and drinks too.
(5)Sarah B.
This is my favorite Indian Restaurant in San Diego. Sundara has a friendly and CLEAN environment (not always the case at other Indian establishments). I recommend the Saag curry as well as the Tikki Masala. The naan is very fresh also. I've been going here once a month for a while now.
(5)Randy B.
Food is okay, chicken lacks flavor. No dark meat. I don't see how this place has 4.5 stars. Its average indian food, the place does look nice and trendy. I import gemstones from India and have been there over a dozen times.
(1)Angie C.
First time trying Indian food and I was pretty impressed. The atmosphere and customer service was great.
(4)Dave M.
Take order- had the spicy ribs, chicken tikka masala, cheese naan and chicken vindaloo. All was amazing, just fantastic food. Excellent curries, excellent food quality, Very tender meats. The online ordering and pickup were perfect, order 100% accurate, greeted with a smile. This is one of my very few 5 stars... Well done Sundara, very well done. You made Indian work in OB. Very Caveman friendly as well.

I'm a huge fan of Indian food, so I was pleasantly surprised and excited to find a place ranked 4.5 stars on Yelp. After having done a little bit of research on this place I figured it was worth a shot. My dinner, shared among a total of four adults, consisted of: samosas, chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo, tandoori chicken, and two pieces of naan(1 plain, 1 garlic-cilantro). The ambiance of the place is great, it gives you a hole-in-the-wall feel with pleasant waiters/waitresses. The price is more than fair as the quality of the ambiance and the quality of the food was good. But why only A-OK (3-stars, as Yelp likes to refer to it as)? The entire meal seemed way too salty. The chicken tikka masala had a good tomato taste to it, but became quickly overwhelming as the salt took over. The vindaloo even more so when combined with the mildly more spicy nature of the curry. The chicken within the curries were succulent, moist, and generous. But the servings were generous as was the serving of basmati rice that came with the curry orders. The garlic-cilantro naan had solid garlic and cilantro flavor too, but coupled with just maybe a dash too much salt. BUT, with that said the samosas were fantastic, maybe a little over-fried at the edges, but I am more than happy to let that slide when the samosas are well filled and massive! The tandoori chicken is to die for. Flavorful and very moist (not something you expect from a chicken that is cooked under really heavy duty heat). I will admit that I've had a mixed experience with regards to the food at this restaurant, but because this is only my first visit, I hope to be able to update this review at a later time with more favorable conclusions.
(3)Su B.
I don't know, you guys. I love Indian food but... The samosas and papadum we really good. The chicken tikki masala and paneer vindaloo were not. Maybe I came on an off night, but I stopped eating my masala because I just didn't like it- too salty/tangy. I asked my friend if I could try her vindaloo in the hopes there would be some vindication for the masala, to no avail. The naan was different but OK. So bummed because the reviews had me looking forward to a delish Indian dinner. I liked the intimacy of the restaurant and the service was very attentive and friendly. Also, there's parking in the back. Maybe it was an off night.....

The best Indian food I've had so far!!!! Went to SeaWorld for the day ended up pretty hungry by dinner time and found this place on yelp. Great staff, cute and cozy atmosphere, and excellent food. Cheese Naan strongly recommanded!!!!!! (Garlic is also good) We ordered the chicken tikka masala pizza, which was amazing. We ordered three curries: Tikka Masala with veggies, Saag with Chicken, and the Vindaloo with Chicken. Vindaloo is medium spicy while the Veggies in Tikka Masala are mostly brocolli, couliflower, and green peas.

Before we came, my eating partner was like, "Come on...an Indian restaurant in OB? You know it can't be good." To which I replied, "But there are so many great reviews!" Indian is my favorite cuisine, yet living here in SD I rarely get to eat it because there aren't many good Indian eateries (and I live so far from Black Mountain Rd.) As we were driving there, I read more and more of the reviews and came to a frightening discovery: several of the reviews from prolific people with tons of reviews (i.e., people I trust more) were not good. So...I had a bad feeling. And sure enough, my feeling was correct--but too little, too late. The cilantro garlic naan was not good; it was doughy. Added nothing to the meal. The saag paneer was generous with the paneer cheese, but it had an unusual flavor and thickness. It did not taste like other times I've had this dish. It just simply didn't taste that good. The chicken tikka masala was also just a bit off. It didn't have the wonderfully complex and deep flavors that you expect in this dish and in much of Indian cooking. It was just Meh. The rum mango lassi didn't taste of mango nor rum. Just tasted like thick yogurt with a tiny hint of fruit. Even the raita wasn't good. It seemed like yogurt with a few pieces of cucumber in it. It was thicker than usual and didn't have much flavor. The samosas were good. Service was nice, and prices were ok, but the food was lackluster and flavors were off. Sorry, Sundara, you are just not my cup of tea.
(2)Crystal L.
The convenience is great but the food left a lot to be desired. It wasn't traditional at all. The chicken makhani was so dry. Very dry breast pieces of chicken. The saag paneer has a strange orange sauce with it, not a traditional cream sauce. I don't think I'll make the trip back to Sundara, unfortunately. Thanks for the easy online ordering, but the food needs a lot of work!
(3)Nam N.
I had initially wanted to try out Sundara as their website stated they delivered to all of OB and Point Loma. But when I tried to order online for delivery--it said it wasn't available for me. I called in and the guy who answered also said they didn't deliver to my area----strange because I live off of West Point Loma and Nimitz. Oh well... I had to run an errand anyway that night so I placed a take out order. Since I love leftovers (and Indian is fab the next day!), I got: - Samosas - Chicken Vindaloo - Garlic Naan The samosas were great! Crisp on the outside and filled with tons of spiced and flavorful goodness. Their tamarind and mint chutneys were tasty as well! The Chicken Vindaloo was average to me. It seemed to miss the deep, spicy flavors which I love about Vindaloo--and it was "tomato-ey"....if that's even a word. Come to think of it, it reminded me more like a tikka masala than a vindaloo. Garlic Naan---delish. What's not to love? Over all, the food was okay for me and perhaps I would try the Tikka Masala next time. If they delivered to mi casa, I would definitely have it again for convenience. But it was ready for me when I came in to pick it up. And the servers seemed nice, too. ps. Street Parking can be a bit tough at night but you can find parking behind the restaurant.
(3)Jessa T.
Amazing Indian food. I love the samosas and the naan, so delicious! They deliver in the OB area which is incredibly convenient! However, their back patio is charming and a lovely place to eat in! I highly recommend checking this place out.
(5)Ryan W.
Delicious!! Great prices paired with craft beers! Small cozy place with patio. Awesome, I will return.
(4)Lee L.
The restaurant is small and cozy. I hate to use the term a "hole in the wall" but that's kind of what it is - in the best possible way. It's just a jewel. We ordered two curries (vindaloo and tikka masala) as well as samosas. The currries had great heat and tasted great on rice or naan. The samosas were delicious (I preferred mine without any of the dipping sauces). Be aware, the seating is relatively limited but parking is plentiful for the size of the restaurant. Definitely will be back. I wish they delivered to the LA area!
(5)Vu Q.
I rarely find restaurants that I would give a 5-star rating to but Sundara is definitely deserving of every single one of those stars. Fantastic service and absolutely delicious food! The chicken in the chicken tikka masala (which I normally find dry at other eateries) was incredibly tender. I also ordered the spinach saag with paneer, per request of my boyfriend, and it was the first and only time I have ever enjoyed eating paneer. As far as Indian food, this is as good as it gets and the only regrets you will have is at the end of your meal when you've realized that you don't have anymore food to eat.
(5)Tien N.
We saw that they had a chicken tikka masala pizza and had to trek out here, but their curries were the sticking point. There were so many flavors that my taste buds were having an orgy inside my mouth. The menu doesn't have a ton of options on it but you don't need many when everything is this amazing. Throw in some garlic naan on top of it and you have yourself an amazing meal.
(5)Andre M.
It's been awhile since i've been here but ill give the quick and dirty. Got two curries, the portions were OK but i really didn't' care for either. The curry to me tasted more like american chili than any type of indian cuisine. I also was a little upset with the service, very slow. With all of that being said i did't really leave a good tip and felt bad because i realized, as we were leaving, the whole place was being run by ONE guy. He was waiting, cooking, bussing, dishwashing everything which is very impressive to say the least.
(3)Leslie S.
The food is fine yet there are plenty of good choices in the area. The delivery wait time is ridiculous. Happened twice, no third chance
(2)Christina E.
The garlic naan and cheese naan were BANGIN'! So, so tasty. All 3 people in my party got variations of the tikka masala and it was super yummy. This place has a skeleton menu of Indian foods, but it has the basics and the ambiance is great, too! These white folks make some good Indian food.
(5)Shonna L.
Indian pizza was sooo good an very unexpectedly great place! Good flavor a and friendly service
(5)Akshay M.
Great Indian food! I visited this restaurant 2 months back but my taste buds still tickle when I recollect their vindaloo and crispy garlic naan. It's soo perfect. We were a group of 5 and it was a little wait to get the table on weekend. It's a small restaurant with very limited menu. We decided to skip the appetizers and order entrées. The garlic naan was the most amazing I have had. I am an Indian and I must admit I did not have better not naan than this in India too. It is a perfect mixture of crispness, garlic and cilantro. We all loved Vindaloo and paneer tikka too. My friend ordered mango lassi and he liked it. Will definitely come back when I visit San Diego again.
(5)Daniel K.
There seems to be considerable confusion about Indian and Thai cuisines. They share many common ingredients, but couldn't be more different in my opinion. I prefer Indian over Thai, but both are quite wonderful. My Indian preference could be directly proportional the service I receive at the Indian restaurant. They really excel at creating an experience, as opposed to simply making great food. The staff is always available and will offer helpful tips if you encounter an unfamiliar spice or term. I just love this place and am a frequent diner here.
(5)Saurav C.
Was in sunset cliffs beach and tis place is hardly a 5 mins driving time from beach.. The food was awesome .. Tried dal makhni and chicken tikka masala.. Also staff was friendly
(5)Jillian W.
I loved this place, after moving to Houston I really miss eating here. I wish they would expand and come to Houston.
(5)Adam S.
We decided to try Sundara on a Saturday after reading the hype on yelp and were pleasantly surprised to learn that Saturday has an all-day happy hour. Beers were half off, and they have a nice selection of craft beers including an IPA, double IPA, Indian brown, and more. One complaint I generally have about Indian restaurants is that many don't offer drinks and the ones that do only have genetic pilsners and Indian beers, so we often get carryout and grab a six pack. This was a nice change. Service was friendly, fast, and good, but we came earlier and the restaurant was empty. This place is nice, but small - there are maybe 3 booths inside and a larger selection of tables on the covered patio out back. Nice atmosphere overall, particularly for an Indian restaurant. The naan was delicious - fresh and hot, well spiced, a bit crispier than I usually see. The samosas were the best I've ever had - lots if flavor instead of the plain mash potato type others serve. The mint chutney and tamarind were also great, though the mint is spicy so be prepared. I got the Vindaloo and my wife went for the Masala. Generally I'm not a fan of Masala, but this wasn't as milky/creamy as others. Tons of flavor and really tasty. The Vindaloo was murder. Just spicy enough to get my sinuses going and full of huge, tender chicken cubes. The rice was served in a huge portion and was fragrant and perfectly cooked. Overall, probably my favorite Indian restaurant yet. Higher quality food, good beer, great service, and a nicer environment. We'll eat here often.
(5)Dana S.
This is my favorite food in San Diego! My husband and I order Sundara for delivery several times a month. The menu is small, but everything on it is delicious. My favorites are the Tikka Masala Pizza; Samosas; and Cheese Naan. My husband loves the Vindaloo and the Spicy Ribs. Really though- everything on the menu is so tasty! The prices are good and the staff are great. Sometimes delivery can take a while. We never mind because it's totally worth the wait, but plan ahead and don't wait until you're already really hungry if you are ordering delivery. Carry out is quick. I've never dined in the restaurant, but I've been in before to pick up our food and it's super cute. Two thumbs way up for Sundara!
(5)Brandon L.
I love this place! Not a big selection but, what they do make is delicious. They have a small, but great outdoor section.
(5)Saad S.
Their Tikka masala and saag was awesome and their tamarind chutney was fantastic! Can't say the same about their dessert, the rice pudding. It doesn't taste like Indian rice puddings and in my opinion is way too heavy on the cinnamon.
(4)Michael G.
Great Indian food! The staff is very friendly. Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. Their Vindaloo is delicious.
(5)RJ S.
Love the Tiki Masala, tandoori chicken and garlic naan. Wife and I always order and it never let's down. Plus their staff are great. Angela rules!
(5)Andy P.
Wow. Did not expect a good Indian joint in OB! Their Chiken Tikka Masala was amazing. Of course, the true hero of the night was their garlic and greenonion nan. Hands down that was the highlight. We also had other variations of curry's which range in spice. Love the heat in one of them but can't remember the name. Their menu is simple and to the point. Most place hands youa gigantic plastic menu that sucks you into a vortex of information, paired by a montage of pics assigned with letters and numbers. Simple is key! Location wise, it is rather small. They can only accomodate so many people at a time. If you have a large group, I would call in first to confirm availability. You can definitely take a date here. Love the find.
(4)Adrienne S.
Delicious Indian food from the Naan bread to the chutney all was excellent! Recommend the lentil curry and the vindaloo curry!
(5)Dan P.
Really good food, good prices, cute little setting. Not authentic...run by a white guy...but still an excellent Indian restaurant. Tiny menu means they focus more on the dishes they do make, and they are quite good. My Chicken and Paneer Vindaloo was really flavorful and the chicken is juicy and tender and all white meat. The Naan was fresh and also delicious. I plan on returning to this restaurant at some point. Just wish it was in OB when I lived there...
(5)John M.
Man I wish this place were closer to my house. I would pick up some Paneer Tikka Masala every night for dinner... Though the décor is so inviting, I may skip the take out and just dine in. Either way, this place is great. Small, but well set-up to maximize the seating space. The outside covered patio is quaint, and I love the succulent décor., The presentation of all the food was awesome. I loved everything we tried, the chicken tikka masala pizza, paneer tikka, the chutney, the SAMOSAs... can't go wrong with anything you get. They have a small menu, but everything they do, they do well. Service was attentive, but not too attentive that it was annoying. Never an empty drink, or a moment you were waiting..they timed it perfectly. Parking isn't too bad since its away from the hectic part of OB - so street parking is abundant around dinner time.
(5)Ryan D.
The food is really good, but I do not ever prefer to order on line!
(4)Brooke P.
Nice environment, friendly service, tasty food. The tikka masala pizza is a must try.
(4)Candice J.
Great food! Great ambience! I totally recommend the Saag with Paneer. AND PAIR IT WITH THE HERBED NAAN! you don't even need a fork. Just mush it up in the bread :) the tikki masala is also good! A bit on the tangy side! The tandori chicken was SO juicy and flavorful. I recommend squirting the lemon right over it! Definitely would come here again especially for the decadent mango lassi!!
(4)C T.
How is this place rated 4.5 stars?? I had a coupon for this place and with the great reviews and my love of Indian food we gave it a try. Chicken tikka masala is really delicious if done right. Theirs is not. The vindaloo had a weird flavor to it. The naan is ok. The mango lassi was underwhelming. And for coconut water they serve canned 75% juice with sugar added. Thumbs down... :(
(2)Glenn G.
Incredible! High quality reasonably affordable Indian food in Ocean Beach, with a great atmosphere inside, --- takeout and delivery service as well. All the food is excellent, however, you want to try something awesome and unique, I highly recommend you try the PIZZA!!! BAM!
(5)Rachael C.
I love the food here and I am not a huge fan of Indian food generally ... not sure what that says, but again the food here is awesome. I love the vegetarian options and the fact that they deliver. The delivery usually arrives within an hour which is perfect.
(5)Pratik B.
One of the best Indian Restaurant in San Diego, the samosa is too good. Not much choices but whatever is offered is awesome
(4)Tracey C.
Amazing complexity of spices and flavors in a casual joint with stellar service. Spicy Ribs stole my husband's heart, "best ever, bar none!" Equally compelling: the veggie Vindaloo and Saag Paneer. Garlic Naan rounded out our lively, hearty meal. You know you're experiencing a class act when the Owner sends along a second course of Spicy Rib appetizer plus Pappadum and Chutneys to apologize for "small delay with the rice cooker." Well done Sundara, we will be back!!!
(5)Eddy C.
I can see why this place got 4.5 stars! I'll not be quite that generous, but it's a lovely spot in a surprisingly quiet part of Point Loma with great dishes and decor. My first gripe is that they do not take reservations between 630-830 pm. Really?!? Is this a Michelin star restaurant? Are they flooded with passersby every night for 2 hours straight? Do they resent paying the $1 OpenTable fee so much as to alienate their customers and incite vengeful Yelp critiques??? Perhaps the restaurant will realize the idiocy of this policy after reading this review. I can't see how it could possibly benefit the customer or the merchant. This snafu almost derailed the evening, but I decided to sally forth like a good Yelper! Luckily, the place was more than half empty when we arrived. We were promptly seated and promptly ordered drinks. Menu is small (this is presumably a good thing for small restaurants). The drink list is surprisingly strong: several wines and beers by the glass (no full bar). Mango lassi was the only authentic drink (you can order it with rum). The food was all excellent/ Chicken tikka masala pizza ($8.5) was cheesy and rich. Not terribly Indian in my opinion. Samosas were decent. Naan was excellent (definitely do the garlic and herb). All of my companions were please with their dishes. The bathroom was immaculate. There was a nice scented candle burning, which you don't see nowadays. My only complaint was the subpar bussing service. My friend's dirty plate sat on the table 30+ min, as did my empty wine glass (from tasting). I'm also inclined to believe the server forgot to order my pizza, as it came out a good 5 min after everyone else's meals. These flaws are accentuated by the fact that we were literally sitting underneath all of the waitstaff. I could see into the kitchen from my seat. All in all, this is a nice place and I will definitely consider coming back, possibly with a date.
(4)Lisa S.
The restaurant is strangely run by Caucasian servers, etc. That throws me off, since Indian food in L.A. is usually served and run by Indian people. Although worrisome, the food ended up being excellent, so no harm done. I appreciated being able to order online and only having to go pick up the food. It's also great that you can ask for utensils through the system. The garlic naan is served in generous portions, so I probably should have only ordered one instead of two. Since each dish comes with rice, it's more than enough carbs already. The chicken vindaloo was my least favorite. It's usually the one I go to right away, but this one was lacking in spice and flavor. The tikka masala, although not as creamy or smoky as what I'm used to, was still very appealing. This was the first curry to be finished of them all. The saag paneer was also different. I'm used to it being completely green. This time, it was red! At first, I was very hesitant and apprehensive, but I loved it -- maybe even more than how I've had it in the past. Great food overall, and it's at a relatively cheap price (compared to other restaurants of it's kind)! It was $35 for what would have been about $50 back home.
(4)Jazmin C.
First time trying it last night... Was just OK. Though I will admit, the mango lassi & the rice pudding were pretty good. But the food was just kinda bland. Definitely not authentic indian flavors.
(2)Nicholas G.
Pretty great indian food! Ok today i decided to goto OB and we choose our destination Restaurant via yelp so I thought it was responsible to leave a good review for this place, wether good or bad. As a brit I love my indian food, believe it or not we eat indian food in the UK more than fish and chips and crumpets :-), so i'm a pretty good judge of good indian food. What can I say it was great, other than Gourmet India downtown which is way way more pricey this is the best i've had in SD, its a shame they don't deliver to PB. The place is pretty small, and from talking to the waitress i hear they get busy at night time so I guess make a reservation if you plan to eat here at night. Long story short, was a good experience, great food and service and would come back, if you add PB to your delivery route would give you an instant 5 :-)
(4)Madhav G.
One of the best indian restaurants we have had so far. I could rate this as the best in USA.
(5)Bridget L.
Car payment, insurance bill and new books left me with enough money, if I wasn't too extravagant. So when I found this Indian restaurant with an amazing lunch special, I knew this place would be in the regular rotation. By mid-semester, I had shared my discovery with some close friends, so on top of being considered a wise consumer , lunchtime also became a nice break for the ordinary. We love the food and the service and are there every Wednesday afternoon, stop by!
(5)Debapriya R.
small menu but Great great food. loved the Saag Chicken n the soft soft Cilantro garlic Naans. And a call out to "the tikka masala chicken pizza"
(4)Justin A.
I came to Sundara the other night after I began to crave Indian. I was a bit disappointed at first, the menu was extremely limited and only contained Masala, Vindaloo, Saag, and Tandoori Chicken. After getting over the small menu, the food that we did order here was great. Quality over quantity ! My girlfriend and I split the samosas, chicken vindaloo, and saag paneer. The portions were large and tasted fresh. They did charge for Papadum (most Indian restaurant's don't), but given the relatively inexpensive prices, the $3 dollars wasn't a big deal. Overall, Sundara is a great place. Even though there is a limited menu, each item seems to be cooked with pride. I will be back soon.
(4)Ray L.
My girlfriend and I tried the chicken tikka masala and she said it was too salty but I thought it was OK. Was really disappointing because of all the rave reviews saying how great it was when it's mediocre. At least the chicken wasn't dry for breast meat, that was the biggest plus of the meal. The worst part of the meal was that the rice was stale and tasted very old. We understand that basmati rice can be dry sometimes, but this rice was hard and tasted old; we know rice, since we're asian and eat every kind. The garlic and cilantro naan was burnt on the bottom and tasted like it was baked with garlic powder rather than fresh garlic so that was disappointing as well. The rice pudding was a little heavy on the cinnamon but not bad. The nuts were a pleasant touch to it. The portion was tiny for 4.05 but hey, probably the best dish in the meal... which isn't saying much. We really wanted to like this place but after this poor experience we probably won't be back. In total, it was only $17.30 but for less than that we could've gotten 2 amazing lunch specials at Taste of the Himalayas for less so the price being an excuse for the quality really isn't a valid argument. We feel really misled by the inflating ratings.

Went here STARVING for dinner (and Indian food) about a week ago. Overall I really liked the place and will totally go back!! It was a little different than the Indian food I am used to though. The bulk of my exposure to Indian cuisine has been in Yuba City, CA...an area that has one of the largest Sikh populations outside India. In that area, I can't remember a single dish that I wouldn't eat again and again and again. At Sundara I ordered the Tikki Masala with chicken. The chicken pieces were well cooked but the sauce didn't impress me and I wouldn't order it again. The Naan (plain) seemed a little less soft than I am used to but still tasty. The samosas were delicious!!!!!!!! My friend had the Dal Makhani (vegetarian lentil curry) and I thought it was exceptional as well!!!! The dining areas (one in the front/entrance and one in the back)) are very small...we sat in the back where there was ample air flow...it was comfortable. The service was excellent. Very attentive and friendly. Excited for visit #2!!! Saag & Vindaloo are next on my list...
(4)Divya C.
Samosa's are super good..chicken tikka pizza is nice..channa masala curry was Ok..little sweet for me..good service..
(4)Angela T.
Really amazing food! Great service....and they deliver! The Saag and Tikka Masala are really excellent. They have a narrowly defined menu, but they do everything so well it's still difficult to choose. Great prices too. Lunch time during the weekends is "happy hour" with half price beer and wine.
(5)Michael F.
I have lived in Ocean Beach and right next door to Sundara for over 2 years now, and for whatever reason, haven't ventured over to try it. Needless to say I can't believe what I have been missing. Amazing flavor in every bite! Truly one of the best restaurants in OB.
(5)Hanna G.
Great Place. Clean food. Simple Menu. Great for first time. The Chef is super cute, you can see her in the small kitchen window working hard with to-go orders flying out the door. She's also white which is pretty cool because she executes the authenticity of Indian very well with her own spin on it. 5 stars because they do VEGAN options. Yes please! Also a nice glass of red wine is perfect with the meal. My boyfriend usually gets a good beer. We aren't even drinkers but for some reason we love cuddling up in a booth, sipping on some grape juice and fermented barley and grubbin. The place is small and I think if you live close to the area its best to get take out. I live in downtown and I'm always in a starving mood when I want indian so we always eat there. Not a lot of room, but we've never had to wait. In the summer, the back patio is nice and cool. In the winter they have heaters, but like i said earlier, the booth is where its at. Service is amazing. We've always had a male server and they're great. They deal with our odd vegan requests and always execute properly. They are good at knowing what you need with out bothering you too much. Def worth a try. Reading some of these reviews confuses me because I'm a foodie and all the other indian I've tried was way to heavy and for not being Indian they hit it on the head pretty well.
(5)Andrew N.
My friends and I walk here all the time, which is good when we drink a few beers. They only have a few beers on tap, but they are all good. I get the vindaloo and a nan and have enough for lunch at work the next day. My buddies get the tiki Marsala and they like that too. Afterwords I stumble home with at least half my food left (unless I bring Erica and we slit one). So go to sundara, tell your friends, but not too many bc I don't want to wait in line
(5)Wanda S.
My first visit to an Indian restaurant in San Diego was a complete success. After having one of the best dinners at Himalayas in Ventura, I didn't think it could any better...however, I was wrong. The ambiance of this place is cool and romantic. The lighting is dim and the soundtrack is AMAZING. ( 80s / The Cure, The Smiths, etc.) It was a slow night so it felt like my date and I had the restaurant all to ourselves. Customer service was spot on and the food was so goooood.... the only thing keeping this from a perfect rating is the super salty taste of the food...I like salt, but I dont like waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I just walked the Sahara desert. I will probably come back, prices are good, the beach is around the corner, and they deliver! Try it!

Very cute tiny little spot with a cozy dinning room and a very open back patio. It's got a modern feel with photos of the past. Very tastefully setup and well thought out. Craft beer and Indian food? Really? Sure why not! The family and I wanted to go chill and watch the sunset up at the cliffs and thought we'd get dinner on the way. There is a few little spots right there in that area but the lil Sundara caught our eye. We walked in and there was two other tables already enjoying their food. The place smelled amazing! We ordered a couple of beers, we just made it in time for happy hour (good deal for beer and wine). For dinner we ordered the pizza app for our son, some Naan bread, tandoori chicken, and some tofu curry. EVERYTHING and I mean everything was amazing. The tandoori chicken was perfection and the pizza was absolutely delicious, I helped my son finish it. I'm not a huge fan of curry but I actually really enjoyed that too. I was very pleasantly surprised. The service was great, the prices were good, and the place it self was very cozy. We'll definitely be coming back!

Loved the food, this place has limited options but they serve them right ! Very quick service and food is delicious !

I read the reviews and they all sounded really good so I ordered chicken tika masala. And garlic naan. The tika masala Was a bit too salty. The naan was dry. Didn't have any butter on it. Most other Indian places add a bit of butter to their naan. Not sure I would go back. Prices are decent, staff is friendly. I find Taste of the Himalayas tastier.

Literally THE BEST Saag (a spinach dish) I have ever laid taste buds on. We sampled 4 items and they were all excellent: Vegetable Saag, Veggie Samosas, Channa Masala and Dal Makhani. The staff and service were great! They gladly accommodated dietary restrictions and even recommended other restaurants in the area for us to try. After two visits in one week, I'm going out on a limb and say it is the best Indian food I've ever had. My only regret: it isn't in my hometown. Now I'm going to be looking for even more excuses to get to San Diego.
(5)Simon J.
The place is clean and never too long a wait. Ordering is very simple and the food fresh and tasty. The wait staff is friendly. I have been here several times and have tried most of their menu which is somewhat small. I wish they did not charge for chutney separately. Their curries are quite good, not authentic Indian. That is fine with me as too authentic does not agree with my vanilla digestion. The tikki masala pizza or nan is very interesting, although it is an appetizer it can be a full meal. The prices is reasonable and the portions always leave me full. So come if you want Delicious Indian light.

In a word: Awesome! From the moment we walked in the sweet smell of curry and the friendly service promised us a delicious treat. Visiting from Central California, this restaurant made us dream of eating here every night. The chicken tikka masala pizza... To die for. The samosas... Amazing. Saag paneer... Better than you can imagine. The rice pudding... The perfect ending to a great meal. We were not not only amazed by the food, ambiance, and service, but the people running the restaurant seem to have this new gem running smoothly and efficiently in a way that seemed effortless. We will definitely be back and recommending this experience to anyone we know coming to the area.

This place is simple and unique. A tiny little space that uses the layout very well. I've eaten here a couple times with friend and I appreciate that they have such a small selection of items, there is stuff I miss, but kinda cool...like In N Out, but Indian style. I have to say that the food is a little different, not your typical Indian food. It's pretty delicious, but not exactly authentic. It's got its own style and flavor for sure, but I dig it. If you're in the area it's a good choice. So the best of the food I think is the cilantro and garlic Naan, they really have some of the best Naan I have ever had. Soft, flavorful and just awesome. Of the entrees the Tikka Masala (chicken) was the best, next the Channa Masala. Both kind of similar to each other, but still good. The Saag was tasted too, but not the best Saag I have had. We got it with veggies and there sure was a lot of veggies in there...but not enough sauce I don't think, but I kind of like it saucy.
(3)Feroz N.
I'm a HUGE fan of chicken tikka masala and I must say that they have one of the best kind! Other places in Cali charges you separate for rice or naan when you purchase chicken tikka masala, but here the dish comes with plenty of rice! Please continue to serve the best food in San Diego!
(5)Bobby S.
Stopped in to check out the restaurant that replaced my old Italian haunt. Typical trendy decor, check, glad bottle of water for the table, check, small menu, check, local beers, check...ok it's hip. Parking around back. Don't get into the OB search for parking routine. Ordered a couple apps: samosas, garlic and cheese nan, chutney...All can't out piping hot and delicious beyond expectation. I figured (with out asking and not being overly hungry) that the entrees would be family style and large enough....Yup. chicken spinach curry with perfectly cooked and seasoned basmati rice. Well done guys! Price was reasonable for three people and beer I think we were around 30$? Worth the stop and I don't miss my Italian place quite so much now.
(5)Amber E.
I loved this cute little place when it was Kecho's Greek, and was excited to try it as Sundara Indian. I love good Indian food, but I thought the food here was just ok. I tried the Tikka Masala w/ chicken, and the flavor of the sauce and consistency of the chicken was kind of strange. Did like the garlic cilantro naan, though. I may come back to try the Saag, Dal or Channa Masala.

We've been getting food from Sundara since they were a delivery style pop up restaurant and have been nothing but pleased the entire time. As far as food goes, they've kept with their limited menu (though, a few additions here and there) and it totally works for them. They make great dishes - if it ain't broke, don't break it!!! Everything is well seasoned and delicious. Zero complaints here! They also have a great beer selection and everything is reasonably priced. I would say the best thing about Sundara is the service. All of the staff are so kind, helpful, and genuine. Their one delivery guy (tall, brown hair?) is SO nice and friendly. And the staff at the restaurant are always super accommodating and laid back. The actual restaurant is small - but it really adds to the family vibe they have going on. Sundara, don't change! We love you!
(5)Zac B.
High Quality!
(5)Beth Z.
Absolutely delicious food and wonderful cozy ambience. The Channa masala and Chicken tikka masala were outstanding!! We also enjoyed the garlic and cilantro naan. Rice pudding and chai tea topped off our dinner. Friendly staff too! It's our first time here and we'll definitely be back!
(5)Gabrielle M.
Yum yum and double delicious. Best Chana Masala ever and I got all my friends addicted to their Chicken Tikka Masala - and garlic naan?! And rice pudding?! And mango lassi?! It had been a while since I had good Indian food and I was so happy to find them. I've ordered delivery several times and I've ate in a lot too and have been thrilled every time- never a bad order! Their new location is just as small as their last but now they have a pretty good sized patio and they are a lot closer to all the happenings on Newport Ave (and to me) so I'm happy they've moved!
(5)Christina C.
This was fantastic, a great kept secret. Tiny restaurant located off of sunset cliffs. If you're in the mood for Indian cuisine, this is the place to go. Worth coming into OB for if you don't live in this part of SD. They do dine in, take out and delivery. Our favorite was the chicken tikka masala pizza and the saag curry with paneer.
(5)Henish P.
This place is the least "Indian" an Indian restaurant can get, but they pull it off perfectly. What surprises you when you first walk in is that it's clean, uncluttered and classy. Most affordable Indian restaurants have none of those qualities. The second thing you notice is that no Indians seem to work there. Which prompted me to ask our server, "Do any actual Indians work here?" Nope. None. Not even Mexicans in the kitchen that might look like Indians. It doesn't matter. The restaurant is nice (albeit a bit small), service is great and the food is excellent. This restaurant does put a lot more cilantro on their dishes than is common in Indian food. Regardless, the final result is mouth-watering food.
(5)Catherine C.
This place is cute and keeps the menu simple but tasty. I came here for dinner with a friend and shared a tikka masala pizza for our appetizer, and each of us had our own tikka masala curry for our main courses. It was totally tasty, and we were not tikka'd out at all afterwards! They have a nice, interesting selection of beers-- I liked the Taj Mahal-- tasty, light, clean taste. The prices here are reasonable, and the spice level comfortable. Their curry goes a bit heavier on the tomato flavor than a lot of other places, but it's nice and has a good blend of other aromas and spice notes. There is indoor and back patio outdoor seating. Parking is your typical lousy OB street parking, but I was lucky enough to find a spot right out front on a Sunday evening. They take credit card here, prices are reasonable, service is friendly and fast, atmosphere is relaxed. I would come back here again if I were in OB and craving Indian curry.
(4)Mikhail D.
I love this place. The menu is pretty simple, but they are extremely good at what they do. I love the tikka masala and the chicken vindaloo and my mom loves the saag paneer. I am sure everything there is tasty. It is pretty casual with good prices and usually has good seating. The staff is super friendly also.
(5)Haley C.
I think this might be the best indian food place in San Diego. Their naan is amazing, and I've had almost every flavor of curry there.... every single one has been INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS!!! perfect portions, good atmosphere. Also a huge plus that they deliver!!! I would recommend this to anyone on the fence about trying indian food!!
(5)Sasha R.
BEST. INDIAN. FOOD. I'VE. EVER. HAD. SERIOUSLY. This little hole in the wall took me by surprise when my girlfriends and I looked for some Indian close to the beach the other night. The service was amazing, and the food was phenomenal. Our server was really quick and spot on with her service. The naan was seriously the best naan I've ever had. Super soft and tasted like to was baked in a wood fire oven, but I'm not sure. Shared samosas and two curry dishes and left so full it was hard to breath. GO THERE.
(5)Loraine S.
I don't usually eat Indian food. A family I used to nanny for bought this for lunch one day and I fell in love. I don't go to any other Indian restaurants because I know they wouldn't compare. Their vindaloo? chicken is spicy and absolutely amazing. That's my favorite dish but everything on the menu is incredible.
(5)Jenn C.
What a find! This place is great. Kind of small, not much seating. During the day it's a breakfast type cafe (also pretty good). We ordered the tandoori chicken. I usually only eat the curries but I wanted to try something new. The chicken was tender, flavorful, and magnificent. Fiance got the saag with paneer, quite creamy and good. I got the vindaloo with chicken. It was very spicy and yum. If I wasn't moving away I'd probably become a regular. Portions are quite reasonable for the price. Food comes in little bento style boxes.
(4)Cathy B.
This place was a complete treat for atmosphere! But maybe not a total winner for authenticity in its food. But so long as you're open to interpretation of cuisine, then you'll be fine. I am just passing through town, so I don't really know how things work here in San Diego, but this place appears to be mostly for carry-out. On the upside for me, though, that means I got to sit in one of their two cute booths, all by myself, with utter peace and quiet and read the news while having dinner. #ftw it's definitely a Californiatized version of Indian food -- and sometimes, that worked really really well, and sometimes less well. Depends on how much Indian food you eat normally. I eat a lot of Indian food. Their chutneys were a much improved version of standard chutneys. The variation wasn't much, but it was noticeable, and, appreciated. The chana masala and saag paneer were tasty and adequate, but not tremendously memorable. The naan kind of was not so hot -- looked like it was packaged stuff that was reheated on a griddle. I mean, some of that packaged stuff is pretty good. And, I could be wrong. But, mine was burnt on the bottom, and, had "griddle" marks that seemed fake. So, yeah - I really liked the vibe of the place. And I was into listening to reggae while eating Indian food and chilling out. I would definitely go back for the low-key-ness of it, but maybe not for the Indian-ness of the food. p.s. I agree with another Yelper that they use canned tomatoes, and, maybe don't cook them down long enough, so that the sauce tastes a little wangy. Here, I'm referring to the chana masala, which they describe (proudly) as having eighteen million spices in it, to yield a complex sauce. (OK, they didn't say 18 million, but you get the point.) IF they use all the spices that SHOULD go into this, then it is diluted by the fresh-out-of-the can taste of the tomatoes. I get it - you gotta used canned tomatoes, especially in the restaurant business. But, there are ways to cover up that tinny taste.
(3)Joanna M.
This is a lovely little place with wonderful food and excellent service. I ordered the Tikka Masala, the garlic naan bread, and a thai iced tea. It was all delicious. It's a small place but they have additional patio seating in the back. It is beautifully decorated and they have parking behind the restaurant. I will definitely be back.
(5)Ashley H.
Cute place, great service, good food. A+! Went during restaurant week so there were good deals. We had chicken tikka masala. It was a good value and pretty good indian food.
(4)Chris G.
The food here is beyond delicious. I have not been a big fan of Indian food in the past but this place changed my mind. It used to be in a different spot it shared but now has it's own. The staff is amazing and the space is small but clean and put together well. They also deliver which was fast, fresh, and still warm which is appreciated. The chicken they use is good pure meat with no grizzle or fat. Everything ordered has been great including tandoori chicken, dal, tikka masala, and naan. You can't go wrong here it's that simple.
(5)Tony C.
This is my favorite of all the Indian places I have tried. I do make an effort to jump around and try all the many choices in this particular type of food that San Diego has but, I always find myself coming back here every time I want a meal I know I"m gonna love. They don't have a very large menu but, what they do have they do very well! It's a dozen items or less including all the appetizers and I've tried most all they have to offer at one point or another. Some of my favorites are the Chicken Vindaloo and I always ask for extra spicy, the samosas, and the garlic cilantro naan. Their cilantro mint chutney is amazing and I always wish I had more to dip my apps into. I also have tried their chai and that is pretty good. My GF makes that at home so I know good chai since she gets her masala from a family in India but, this one is a good comparison while out. Nothing better to end your meal than a warm steamy cup of chai! Much better than a coffee house chai! They have nice ambiance with some indoor seating and some outdoor. More outdoor than indoor and they always are quick and good with their service times and checking up on the table. Usually I find myself in and out of here within an hour. They also have quite a few varieties of Indian Beer that is fun to try with your food! Great prices and most dishes are big enough to share!
(5)Gourav R.
The food is awesome with great service. Rice pudding is a must try.
(5)N S.
Basic fare and not authentic Indian by any standards. Suited to the local palate with a very limited selection of entrees. Traveled 8 miles to this place based on the reviews and was disappointed to say the least.
(2)Samantha B.
I got the Vegetarian Makhani, not my ultimate.best but good. He had Tandoori Chicken and loved it The naan is very good to My favorite was the dessert : a delicious rice pudding with spices and topped with crumbled pistachios Yum I love coming here because this place is very clean and modern , no old carpet on floor
(4)Elizabeth P.
This is a great place to get cheap and tasty Indian food. The samosas were delicious and hot, and the chutneys offered different flavors to add to them. The garlic and cilantro naan is AMAZING. Probably my favorite part of the meal. I ordered the vindaloo curry which is spicy. It was good, just not as good as other Indian food I've had. Between two people, we ordered a mango lassi (which is perfect in between bites of spicy curry), samosas, garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, and vindaloo curry...and the total was $34! That is a really good deal for 2 people, plus it was a ton of food--I even had leftovers to take home! The outdoor seating in the back is very cute. There is a gate in the back that gets quite a lot of foot traffic, so be prepared for that if you sit at one of the tables next to the door. I had no trouble finding street parking early on a Saturday evening, but when we left there were significantly less spots available and more traffic.
(4)Dora C.
Fabulous Indian food. Great music. Cozy place and great customer service. We've been here many times and I finally took the time to Yelp to share with all.
(5)Mary S.
Been ordering Sundara as delivery since it opened...love love love the food and prices! Tonight...the online orde said to expect an hour. I waited 1.5 hours before calling because it is New Years Day. Upon calling was informed. 'Yea....we are working on packing up yours and many orders'. So I then asked, how long are we talking and get 'maybe at least another 15 minutes...sorry'. I proceed to inform the guy that I am disappointed as a regular customer that the website told me an hour instead of an hour and 45 minutes...big difference. I get a simple, 'yea sorry...it's busy". Well duh dude...I get that t's friggin busy. That experience and sad handling of me checking on status...plus zero offer of a discount or anything....well that changes it all for this regular customer. There is plenty of other good food in OB!
(1)Taylor B.
Came in with some co workers after work and happy I did. Vindaloo chicken is awesome! I wanted some spice and flavor and I got it! Chicken was cooked perfectly and you get a perfect amount. The naan was too thin for me, I'm not a naan expert lol but I've had it before where it wasn't as thin and crisp. Other then that I loved the place. You walk in thinking its tiny and will prob have to wait for a table....think again. They have a patio outside with seating and the atmosphere is the same and its not freezing (we went at night for dinner). Awesome little place, can't wait to come back and try the chicken tikki marsala and saag.
(4)Fletcher P.
My wife and I had a great experience at Sundara. It's a cute, small, and a cozy restaurant. Their food is excellent and prepared well. It doesn't feel "authentic" in the restaurant but I have no complaints about the food or the atmosphere. We loved the simple menu, we ordered the garlic naan, tikki masala, and channa masala. Very satisfied.
(5)Ashley S.
Best Indian food I've ever had!! I love the gourmet twist they give their dishes and keep the menu short and sweet while still satisfying my vegetarian needs while my husband can order chicken. The atmosphere is pretty cool too, very sustainable, rustic and cozy. It's a weekly must visit for us :)
(5)Chelsea K.
Sundara started making the food spicy to order again! We always ask for "very spicy" and it comes deliciously and perfectly very hot. The Tikka Marsala, Saag, and garlic naan are our go-to order.
(5)Mehul S.
Very limited menu but food was pretty good. Had dal makhani, vegetable & paneer tikka masala, garlic & coriander naan, rice & raita - all of which were tasty. Portion sizes were moderate. Restaurant is small but clean. Service was great. Parking available at the back. Would probably go back once a month (I'd go back more often if their menu had more variety). One star deleted for very limited menu and one star for quality of food - which was definitely good but not excellent.
(3)Khristopher t.
Excellent service Good food and great atmosphere Nice setting !! the curries are all authentic and wonderful, and the spices are delicious the renovation of this space has pushed all the business around it to bring their spaces up to the 2010's as well! thanks !
(5)Heidi C.
This place is a great addition to food options in OB. Three of us went last night and shared 3 dishes which was more than enough food. We had great service, and because it was Wednesday night there was $10 off all bottles of wine, so that was a nice bonus. We asked for our food to be mild and were happy that is actually was. The flavors were great. I appreciate that they offer a small menu and make everything just right. We had paneer tikka masala, channa masala and a vegetable curry. It was all delicious. Its a cozy place in the front, and at the back there is a great patio. Great service, great food, very reasonably priced. We will be back for sure!
(4)Mike G.
Great place! Very nice atmosphere, the staff is amazing, and the prices are good. Also, the food. Very, very good. We decided to try this place because we both like Indian food, but haven't had it in a while. We came here and found staff that actually seems to care about your experience, which made a huge difference. Then the food came, and we were not disappointed. We split the Samosas for app, the Tandoori chicken and chicken Vindaloo, and rice pudding for dessert. All of it was excellent. I wish I had thought to take some pics, but it was so good I just wanted to eat it.
(5)Chuck L.
Tasty. Short, focused menu. Vindaloo was spicy but not overwhelming. Chicken tikka also very tasty. Naan was fresh and excellent. Good beer selections. Small, few tables. Fun. We'll be back.
(4)stacy l.
Amazing and delicious Indian Cuisine!! Charming and intimate setting~great staff as well. It's nice to have a different flavor in the Pt Loma/OB area....and it's also convenient for take out. A real winner!!!
(5)Dani H.
I use to get carry out from Sundara, when they would take over the cafe near sunset cliffs in the evening. It use to take forever to get the food and the atmosphere was just so so. The new location for this restaurant is amazing! I went there this past Saturday and I am already itching to go back. The menu is really simple, but that is kind of nice, and their patio is adorable. I had the palak paneer, the chana masala, veggie samosas, papadum and the garlic naan. All of it tasted fantastic. If you are a vegetarian and looking for a great bite to eat in OB, this is your place.
(5)Michelle T.
yummm yumm if i could just put their tamarind chutney on everything in life that would be great.
(5)Katie B.
I ordered delivery for Chicken Saag. They were super friendly and it made me even more excited that I could wait at my house for Indian food to be brought to me!!! However, if you like Indian food, as in the taste, spice, authentic deliciousness; then this isn't the place for you. The "Indian" food that they serve does taste good, it just doesn't taste like Indian food. A bit expensive for Indian food that does not taste like Indian food. I will probably eat here again though because I really love the delivery aspect. I love the idea of food that isn't pizza coming to my house with a smile!
(3)Thomas W.
OVERRATED. Had this place bookmarked for a long time before I tried it so I was excited to finally taste it. I got the tikka masala with naan, both of which were equally disappointing in their own way. The tikka tasted like crappy tomatoes and the curry had very little of the creaminess that is usually associated with this dish. The naan was clearly not fresh made and was not the right texture. I know a place not too far from here that makes wayy better food. You just have to do a quick search to find it.
(2)Kelsey H.
I can easily say this is my favorite place to eat in San Diego. Absolutely my go-to for both eating in and taking out. 1. Convenience- I may be biased because I share an alley with Sundara, but it is a cute little place in OB. I have eaten in and taken out numerous times, and have never had a complaint. 2. Food- Amazing food. Seriously to die for. They have a simple menu and it makes it nice to try many different things and share 3. Service- Great service, I've never had a complaint. Although they aren't open on Tuesdays, which I have a hard time remembering. 4. Happy Hour until 6 daily!! Great happy hour deals. Great beers and certain wine for I think half off, which is about $3 or $4. Great place to stop in, have a drink, and enjoy a simple and deliciously authentic meal.
(5)Dyami M.
Cute little beachy place. Upbeat music and faux placemats for "cafe" feel. Tiki masala was descent but not my favorite. Garlic naan was tasty w masala sauce.
(3)DeeCee J.
We came to Sundara after seeing all the good yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. The place is immaculate and the service could not have been better. The food came out piping hot and fresh and the little sauces you can order added such a tasty and dynamic flavor to the ALREADY flavorful food. The chicken was white through and through and there were no weird (cheap) pieces of meat in any of the three different dishes we had. My personal favorite was the tikka masala. You'll spend $10-$12 on a plate but we had leftovers to take home. It was also so refreshing that most of the menu was gluten free. What a gem!
(5)Lyndsi W.
Their samosas are perfect! The wrap is thin and crispy! Their Chicken Vindaloo is nice and spicy and the garlic cilantro naan is good by itself! Just recently which eating here I discovered their chai tea! It's a little sweet for my liking but waaaaayyyyyy better than anything you would get at a coffee shop that they would call Chai. I find you can get an appetizer and split and entree and have plenty of food for two people!
(4)Kate Rebecca O.
This restaurant is truly a gem! Excellent food (favorite is chicken vindaloo and tiki masala with paneer!) and great service. Certainly my favorite restaurant for Indian food in San Diego!
(5)Andrew W.
Great place! Good food, good ambiance, and good beer. I would warn folks looking for super spicy Indian food that this is not your place. For someone with kids like me this place is great.
(5)Mark W.
great for small groups or date night. Small dimly lit rustic setting. what I ordered: pricier than i thought it would be but not by much. samosas (2) $4.50: crispy shell, but bland. sauces were decent. Mango Lassi $3: creamy yogurt shake. smooth. just imagine drinking watery yogurt. it was pretty good. cheese Naan $2.75: delicious, perfectly cooked, crispy outside and soft texture inside. Good Flavors! Tandoori Chicken $8.50(2 drumsticks 2 thighs): flavors were there, tasted fresh! ChickenTikka Masala $9.50: too much tomato! would not recommend. it was edible but not what Im used to. If you live in OB/Point Loma, check this place out!
(3)Bryan K.
Okay so I took my wife on a date to Sundara in Point Loma tonight. First, the food was excellent. Some of the best Tikka Masala and Veggie Saag we've ever had. If you like it hot, the "medium" is a good start. The service was also great, the staff was professional and knowledgable about their cuisine and the outside seating was perfect for a romantic conversation over dinner. I would totally reccomend this place to anyone!
(5)Jocelyn L.
I love their new location! Happy to see that they have a full-sized restaurant now instead of taking over the Point Loma Cafe at night. The food is generally inexpensive and tasty. I wouldn't call it the most authentic Indian food I've ever had, compared to other Indian places in San Diego like Taste of the Himalayas - now that place is authentic, albeit more expensive than Sundara. Overall I would come back here for the good prices, tasty food, and wonderful back patio. Great ambiance for a date! They also deliver - last time I had food delivered I think it was only $1 extra!
(4)Briana E.
I was in San Diego last October for my honeymoon. I had never tried Indian food, but after reading rave reviews on Yelp, I figured I would give it a try. The Chicken Tikka Masala was very tasty! The Naan was really good too! I paid like 20 bucks for 2 people and we both really enjoyed it. I plan to return there tonight, as I am in San Diego again :)
(5)Shannon H.
I was pretty excited to try this place since I live a couple blocks away. My only experience wasn't awesome, unfortunately. We ordered soon after we were seated, but didn't get food for 40 minutes. When we did get it, it wasn't hot, and the rice was clumpy, like it had been sitting out for a while. It tasted good, but nothing notable...nothing to make up for the wait. Weirdest part--the naan was really obviously not fresh. Not like it was old...like it was a perfect circle with score marks, just like you buy in the frozen food aisle. I'm hoping we may have just picked a bad night...I haven't ruled it out entirely, but it was not good.
(3)Hemant K.
I like Sundara. I like the small menu, the food tastes good and the service is friendly. BUT there are some inexcusable issues due to which I give this restaurant a 2-STAR instead of a 5-STAR. 1. Cardinal rule of Indian dining- YOU CANNOT CHARGE MONEY FOR CHUTNEYS. Paying for Chutneys at an Indian Restaurant is like paying for Salsa at a Mexican restaurant. This is simply inexcusable. I dont know what they are thinking. 2. Papadoms (or Papads) are not appetizers. Most Indian restaurants would offer papads as complimentary accompaniments (along with Chutneys). Sundara charges for both. 3. Tikka Masala- Too sour. It is clear from the taste that the chef uses canned tomato paste- and uses too much of it. This gives the tikka masala a sour taste with a bitter after taste. (So given that they have only three entree choices- this means that 1/3rd of their menu sucks) Apart from these three points, I would say that dining here was a pleasant experience. The menu is small (three entree choices, three appetizer choices and Tandoori choice)- which i love. The food is not over spiced and has a great taste. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. But the three points mentioned above are in-excusable in Indian dining and in my opinion , Sundara deserves 2 stars.
(2)Jill N.
Super fresh, delicious Indian food and they deliver too. Some of the best samosas I've ever had. Online ordering is a breeze and their quoted time is accurate. Thanks Sundara, I'm so thankful to have you in OB!
(5)Joey A.
Super good authentic Indian cuisine. I love this place and make sure to eat there whenever possible. It is a small little joint without much seating available, but I always seem to get a table without much wait. There are veg and non-veg options and the nans are exceptional when ordered with the homemade chutneys.
(5)Stella A.
This is a very cute place with a great atmosphere. The food was not that authentic tasting and didnt have that much of an array of items. The chicken was dry and the rice was slightly undercooked. I believe that if a place is to have a smaller selection of items, they should be executed with more TLC. However, given that there arent too many other indian places in OB and that it caters greatly to the average american palate it may be your best bet if youre staying within the OB area
(3)Avalon L.
I thought the food was absolutely delish! I loved the Samosas and the chutneys they came with so complimenting to eachother!! And the setting is cosy and nice, only reason this place is getting a star short of 5 is because even though the food is great its such a small variety and I know Indian cuisine has so much more to offer! I will be going back to try a different dish but really would suggest adding somethings to the menu! Over all I think ya'all should try it!

I.love.Sundara!! Anytime I'm in OB I have to eat here because it's just too good! I love that their menu is so simple because I really think it helps them to stay focused on perfecting the items they offer. I love their new location too because there's more room to sit inside, enjoy a beer, and enjoy their atmosphere. I've never ordered anything that I didn't like and I've never had a bad experience here. My favorite things to order are the tikka masala or the saag with cilantro and garlic naan. MMM! Sometimes when I order takeout the wait can be kind of long but to me it's worth the wait. The prices aren't bad either, and the portions are pretty big -- I typically split an entree and order some naan and that is perfectly filling. Definitely check this place out if you're in OB!

This place is the real deal for authentic Indian. Just wish I lived closer - I'd go multiple times per week!

Forget the bad food out there, or commercialized food on the main drags. You must come to this place after a long day at Sea World or the Zoo. Simple menu, but they know what they're doing!

Awesome ... Surprised to see this restaurant run by non Indian origins with great taste of Indian spices and curry. - authentic taste of Indian food - full marks! - delicious - cleanliness - full marks here too - friendly service - great ambience and presentation - parking available at the back -- only thing is it is small place with limited tables -- would like to hear Indian music running in background Will definitely revisit here!!

Sundara is all around amazing. The food is delicious and reasonable priced. I love spicy food and cannot get enough of their vindaloo chicken. Their naan is equally delicious (all of them, you really just can't go wrong) and they also feature a good selection of craft beers. The service here is always friendly and quick. As for the atmosphere, the restaurant is small making this a great place to bring a date. The outdoor patio is super cute and never gets too cold because it's covered and has a heater. If there's space on the patio, that's definitely where you want to sit. I have nothing bad to say about this place. It has become a tried and true favorite!

The food here is simply outstanding! Very affordable and very fresh. My wife, who is not usually thrilled about Indian food, is still raving. The "con" is that the menu is somewhat limited. Check it out online if you want. Having said that, we were able to order four fantastic main dishes (chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala, chana masala, and saag paneer), along with some rocking samosas and some papadam. Great for vegetarians/vegans as well.

This place came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. Ordered vindaloo chicken, tikka masala chicken, tandoori chicken and plain naan/garlic naan -- all were excellent. This spot has a small menu, but everything on the menu (I ordered a significant portion of the offerings) is expertly prepared. I am definitely going back and would highly encourage anyone to try this place. It is an excellent addition to OB. Also, you have to love the concept -- craft beer & Indian food :) Cheers. Happy eating.

So if you notice a lot of the reviews, everyone LOVES the chicken tikka masala and generally orders to go. Well, my husband and I did not order the tikka masala and dined in the restaurant, and we are really confused why this place has such high ratings. We were sat promptly, which was nice. Then no one came to help us for a while. We noticed the to go orders pouring out of the kitchen, but didn't see food coming out for the restaurant diners. We looked over the menu and noticed it is extremely limited for a so-called Indian restaurant. But hey, we thought they must be really good at cooking those dishes...so I decided to get the paneer vindaloo and my husband ordered the tandoori chicken. Finally the waiter came around and he asked if we had been there before-we said no, we're from out of town. He then explained how to order--we did not realize we had to write our order down as if it were a sushi restaurant. How odd. And instead of just taking our order, he watched us check off the little order ticket, which took twice as long. We wanted to get samosas, they were all out. We ordered cheese naan instead. Again, as we sat there waiting patiently, all we saw were to-go orders coming out of the kitchen. We literally sat there for 45 minutes without food. Finally when it arrived, we were devastated to find: 1. The chicken tandoori comes in a little bowl. For $9, you'd think you would see an impressive array of chicken. No, there were three small pieces of bland chicken, that was it (I wish we took a picture now). 2. My vindaloo was overwhelmingly spicy--I love spicy, but this was just gross. It also had an overwhelming flavor that was not vindaloo. 3. Our cheese naan was not cooked all the way through. We were so hungry that we ate what we could and left just as quick. This place should not call itself an indian restaurant--maybe "fusion", but it's not indian. We were still hungry when we left that we ordered a pizza at our hotel, and that was better than Sundara.

Cute little place! Nice patio out the back. I've tried a bunch of Indian places in SD and I'm happy to add this to the rotation. The menu is small, so might be hard if you go with a big group. The food: Samosas - you get 2 with some dipping sauces, good way to start. Saag with chicken, delicious. Next time I'll try the masala, heard that's good as well. Naan a must, we went for the garlic and cilantro. A great place to get an affordable, fresh meal. Yum!

Awesome! The Tandoori chicken, Samosas and Garlic Naan are very tasty. I didn't wait very long and even got a coupon for free Naan with my next meal! Small menu but good prices :-)

I've never actually been to an Indian restaurant before that wasn't run by Indians, so I really had no idea what to expect. I actually got lost getting here because Google sent me to another address, so be mindful of the actual address. The Menu here is incredibly simple and admittedly misses some important Indian traditional foods that I would like to see included, however, keeping things simple is always a better route than over complicating the menu. It would've been nice to get some sort of Chai, but they said that they're not quite ready to do it right at the moment so they aren't doing it at all. Which is beyond honorable for a good restaurant. Better to only do the things you do well. I'll definitely be coming back here again since I only got the Chicken Vindaloo and some cheese and garlic naan.

Awesome ! It's all awesome nothing more to say other than go try it! It's smaller but there is a nice back patio and good selection of beer!

The air is full of spicessssss . . . . . .Indian food had always called for such a trek into the city--until now. You can tell everything is freshly made: exquisite, complex and balanced flavor in everything I've tried. Naan bread that obviously came right out of the tandoori oven embedded with sesame seeds or fresh cilantro (yum). The paneer (homemade soft cheese cubes) in the spinach and onion "sag paneer" is to die for. Yes everything's spicy; it will make your mouth sing. For the cautious eater, order it mild and get some mint chutney to jazz it up a little at a time. Order a mango lassi to go with your spicy-ness, a yogurt based fresh mango smoothie. Don't even need to tell you how good that is for you. And that's not all ! Vegans and vegetarians will be delighted. Adventurous eaters will be gratified. People who have never tried Indian food now have a chance to try the real thing. All of us who want to eat unique food and never leave Ocean Beach now have our way. All of us who want to eat unique food and never even leave the house have our way too. People who only have mismatched tupperware with no lids will find the to-go containers a sturdy and reusable container. Every time I wash them (I now have a matching set), I think "I need to get some MORE ". More food-- duh ! The to-go boxes are a bonus ! Thanks Amber for letting me steal your yelp page.

I love this place! The Tikka Masala pizza is scrumptious. I am also a big fan of their different Naan options and the saag paneer. I like how they just give you rice without having to order it as well. Well played. Their happy hour is super reasonably priced as is the regular menu. Everything we had was delicious. I'll be back and most definitely hitting up their takeout or delivery guys when I'm feeling lazy at home.

One of the best Chicken Tikka Masala I have eaten in USA and I have been to at least 50 Indian restaurants all over the country. Definitely try the Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza! Beer is also good with the spicy food

Dropped in as they are supporting Ocean Beach Community with Restaurant Week. Fab beyond hopes! Fresh, hot, and prepared carefully. Delicious. Tiny place so come early or plan for takeout . Parking behind so just come. Will be a spot soon with lines out the door and down the sidewalk as OB heats up as the place to live.

I love Sundara! The tiki masala is by far the best thing on the menu. Great flavors, great spice, and so filling. I have never been a fan of Indian food, but now I beg my fiancé to order takeout at least once a week! I am a little disappointed that since moving to the new location the food isn't as spicy. I didn't order the chutney the last time because I didn't realize that the spice level had changed. I look forward to dining at the new location!

We have yet to eat at the new location, but we have ordered take-out frequently and have never been disappointed with the food. It always arrived hot and the quality is very good. The vegetarian samosas and the saag paneer are especially delicious. I also really like the online ordering system, it has worked flawlessly for us and we've even used it to order from a the plane. If timed right, you can order while in the air and your hot meal will arrive at about the same time as you.

I just came for a mango lassi while in SD, which was pretty good! It was pretty depressing to find out this place does not have halal food, but then again, I also found out that although this place is a typical Indian restaurant, it is NOT owned by Indians, just funded by them. Two of the owners were in the kitchen at the time I ordered ...making the food? I did end up ordered veggie samosas (2 for $5) which came with tamarind chutney and mint chutney (DELICIOUS).

This place rocks! So happy to find it. Great food and friendly service. The actual restaurant is small and always busy, and only eaten there once, the other times have been take out. But it is still nice and fast service even when busy and crowded. Nice little gem here in this part of town. Now, if only they would deliver to my area I would be ordering here once a week! Ya, it's that good! And a great price.

I ordered take out online showed up early and my order was ready quick. the curry was great! The chicken was bland and super small for being listed as a stand alone dinner, should be in the appetizer section. My bread was burned :( a real bummer since in the menu it's talked up to be so fresh and so good! Just charcoal here!

I have not been to Sundara's new location yet, but I intend to soon. Very tasty Indian options. They were a little slow before at they're old location, but I think that may change at the new place now that they are no longer sharing a space. It wasn't crazy slow... I just wouldn't have recommended someone go here who is very hungry. Their delivery service seemed really busy also the night we went and it really made me want to order in some night. Super excited to see the location... I feel like a different ambiance will really set this place and your mouth on fire.

Amazing! Had some Vindaloo and Tikka Masala with my wife for my birthday dinner! We had the garlic naan bread with all 3 chutneys! Massive flavor! Great curry! The Vindaloo was suuper spicy! But I loved it The Tikka Masala was spicy but good for my wife who is spicy sensitive! Naan bread was amazing as well!

If you want to know how to turn a walk-in closet into a restaurant then this is worth a visit. An incredibly good use of a small space with a decent outdoor patio. Most of the food was lovely: yummy samosas, delicious tiki masala, really good garlic naan and the masala pizza was great...but the rice pudding was more like Indian slop than dessert and an unfortunate way to end an otherwise good meal. The service as well could use a bump up (guy filling up water glasses spills all over table and keeps on moving, etc.). A great spot for takeout but a little tight for dining in with more than two in your party. A perfect spot for say...college date night?

Very happy to have found this place. Tiny, not many seats. The minute you walk in there is a good vibe. It's clean. The staff are super friendly and the food was delicious. Loved the Samosas!

We probably order Sundara 2-3x month. I eat more of their Saag Paneer than anything else in OB (save for Surfrider slices). I think it's only gotten better since they graduated from a pop-up to a real space on Sunset Cliffs. I can't speak to the ambience since I only ever get delivery, but 4+ stars for their food, which is always fresh, piping hot and deliciously seasoned. My only comment is that the raita is not always consistent, but I'm a stickler (scan my Yelp reviews for my many comments on yogurt sauces). Tikka masala and saag are both excellent, flavorful and fresh and the naan is great. I keep trying to convince myself to try something else but I can't. To Yelper Hemant's point, it'd be great not to pay for chutney and papadum, but the prices are so low for the quantity and quality of the curries that I don't mind. Curries are less than $10 and enormous. Would be a $20 meal for two at most if I could stop myself from ordering so much naan... Delivery guys are also really pleasant, every time, and I've never had a wrong order sent me way (even in their pop-up days). Love the online ordering and time estimate. This is big for me, as delivery service in the beach neighborhoods, especially summer/weekends, can be problematic.

If you're in Ocean Beach go to Sundara for some delicious Indian food. The menu selection isn't huge but everything there is flavorful and delicious. Would highly recommend it for anyone in the mood for Indian food.

Very delicious and nice decor. Friendly service and large portions. Try the vindaloo for some good spice.
