Seriously people why are you here?? The wine is beyond nasty unless you like the taste of getting sick left in your mouth. I really don't mean to be so harsh but people are flocking to this place as if they had anything good to offer. Check out the Stonehouse down the road if you enjoy a good glass of wine. Honestly, I believe people come here for the same reason they go to P F Changs...to be seen not for what they offer. Oh the only reason I gave this place one star is because they make a really good mustard. As for the food...yeah stop off at McDonalds.

Winery is pretty, wines are tasty but slightly pricey. They also have art work and nicknack's for sale. Discounted price for club members.

When the weather is good this place gets busy! Everyone I was with really like the food and wine If you know wines villa Toscano makes some the best wines in the valley, the Viognier, Old Vine zin's and Barbera's can't be beat. The staff was busy but tried to help eveyone even the last stop drunks. They are dog friendly and have lots of nick nacks in he tasting room along with the best selection of mustards for dipping. Most people don't know who there wine makers are and should educate themselves!!!

I was pretty unsure about going to this place with its mixed reviews but decided to try it anyway because Villa Toscano has the cafe attached to the winery and my group I was with wanted a place to grab some food. The winery itself is beautiful. The grounds are well kept and the structures and landscaping makes you feel as though you are on vacation. The wine I actually thought was pretty good. Nothing stood out to me as so phenomenal I had to buy it, but all pretty tasty. They have a lot of reds, most I liked although my friends were commenting that at the rate they are pouring you tastes, you start to lose track of what is what and lose the ability to taste the difference. There are bread and pretzels out to use as palate cleansers so remember to actually take advantage of those and try not to let them hurry you along with the tasting. They pour a lot of wines and do not have a limit or tasting fee. The man pouring our wine was entertaining and made for good conversation. Overall a pretty good experience in the tasting room with pretty decent wines. For the wines some of the prices seem a bit steep. A 50 dollar bottle of port in Plymouth is a little silly. The cafe at Villa Toscano I thought was pretty cool. It isn't too often in this area that you can find a place to get food along your wine tasting way. They offer pizzas and sandwiches plus cheeses and olives and such. We ordered the chicken pizza and sat out in the covered heated tent. The pizza was delicious and for 13 dollars there was enough to feed us all (4 of us eating) and left us pretty full. There were quite a few other people also taking advantage of the cafe, sitting and enjoying some food and a bottle or two of Villa Toscano's wines. I really quite enjoyed this place and will want to come back as a great food stop next time tasting in Plymouth. Just sitting on their patio area and enjoying a glass of wine sometime sounds amazingly relaxing.

A very beatiful place to visit and the wines very nice. They do not charge for tastings and they have barrel tastings which was such a nice experience. The grounds are lovely a must stop if in the area.

Great selection of wines and atmosphere, however had a bad experience with one of the pourers. Very very rude and unfriendly.

  • Mani R.

They were out of white wine so we tasted their reds. The wines were OK not special. They also had barrel tasting too. What was nice about this winery was the setting. The grounds were beautiful and inviting. This would be a great place for a special event.

Holding my wedding here in June 2008. Event staff on initial visit (appointment) was a little mixed up (they were really busy) but the woman (Kathleen I believe) that eventually gave us our original tour was SUPER INFORMATIVE, very blunt (which I love), and really sold us on the no-muss-no-fuss-no-hassle that this reception site offers. Its pretty much all inclusive, you bring cake, flowers, dj, officiant, and they do the rest. So far, so good...We'll see how the tastings and event planning goes!

Don't bother. It was fun when it first opened but now it just feels like a big tourist trap. (actually, it is a big tourist trap) Make a big U-Turn and check out Young's, or continue up the road to Vino Nocetto instead.

Excellent customer service. The standout wine was the port and the others were all perfectly acceptable. The setting is lovely. And they've got lots of dressings, mustards and other food items for sale in the tasting room.

This was my favorite winery in the area...the grounds are beautiful and perfect for a special event (there was one being set up while we were there...sooo pretty!). The wine was really good too...I ended up buying a special red wine that was a limited production - super fruity and sweet (as I write this, the name escapes me...but you can't get it anymore so it doesn't really matter). They have a nice gift shop too, definitely check out some of the condiments and things.

We stopped by here, it has a beautiful view and lovely grounds. They do charge to picnic there, which I have mixed feelings about. The girl inside explained why, although we weren't picnicing so I'm not sure why she did. Apparently people come up, don't buy any wine, and leave their trash. Always gotta be someone ruining it. Anyway, there are some nice wines and they pour alot of varieties. I must admit I was totally turned off that they pushed the wine club so hard...it was like a constant high pressure sales pitch...everything was "if you joing the wine club you can get this, you can have that, I will give you this etc"...it just got old after awhile. I really liked a couple of their Italian varietals, I thought those were the best. To answer your question, no, I did not sucumb to the pressure, I did not join the wine club. It is nice, so stop by...hopefully the incentive they had going for their associates to sell the wine club is over and you can simply enjoy the wines. theculinaryworks.com Chef Jen

This winery was lovely! They had a great patio filled with flowers and a fountain. They also served lunch. The grilled chicken breast sandwich was really tasty, same with their pizzas. Definately a winery to check out if you are in the area.

We haven't been in a long long time, and so we stopped in on our last visit to the area and it's a bit different, and that may be an understatement. First, the place was rocking. If you like loud and crowded, this is a good stop. On the Saturday we stopped in there were probably 30 people in the tasting room. This is not my preferred way to taste wine as I'd prefer to have a quiet room where you can hear the person tell you about the wine, but the flip side is that it's crowded for a reason. The wine tasted good. That's the problem, if you make good wine, create a comfortable environment, and hire nice people, crowds will show up. The downside, they wouldn't let us bring our picnic lunch to eat at their facility. This caused us to cut our visit short, as it was lunch time, and we were hungry. Good wine, friendly people, no outside food picnic policy, big crowds, we left pretty quick. Next time, this is a mid-week stop, not on the weekend.

My wife and I visited this place for the first time today, without checking it on online first, which was a mistake. It's in a beautiful location, and the wines are okay, not as good as other wineries in the area. We were extremely put off by the lack of customer service. When we arrived at the tasting room it took about 5 or so minutes before we were even acknowledged, despite making eye contact with a couple staff members. They require you to pay the tasting fee upfront, which is highly unusual. The server went through the wines quickly, but provided no information on the wines or asked for any feedback - but she was relentless in pushing the wine club. We have been to many wineries across the Foothills, and have loved many of them, but not here. With the lack of customer service, the push to sell wine clubs, and the tense attitude of the pourers, I get the impression that this winery has very poor management, and from reading other reviews, it looks like a lot of others have noticed this as well. Very disappointing, we will not be back. We will take our business to other area establishments that treat their guests as actual guests.

This place is always on my list every time I go wine tasting. They have amazing food, tons of options and a lot of it. Also they have wonderful wine and barrel tasting!! Definitely become a club member for great food and wine discounts.

The pizza was delicious. The grounds are beautiful. The tasting room was packed which made it difficult to taste so we ended up leaving half way through. Suggestion: remove the over priced items for sale in the tasting room and add another bar or a few small bars.

As soon as you drive through those gates, it's just a beautiful sight! So much so, that we had our wedding photos there. The brunches and pasta buffets are DELISH!! I love that you can picnic outside, also. It's just a little slice of winery heaven that I'll never get sick of.

Pretentious. Rude. Don't act like you're Napa. Let the pretentious Napa Wineries be pretentious. You're hidden in Amador County. Be humble. I used to love this place. I always talked about this place to everyone I know. I get it. You don't want people to visit here. It's ok. I won't. Thanks for saving me a trip out here. I'll just go to somewhere else instead.

We arrived at 5:16 pm today and we were greeted by a young woman who opened the door for us as we walked up. We purchased 8 tasting flights for $40. When Carrie said they were closing in 10 minutes we asked if she could stay open a little longer - and tipped her an extra $40. Over the next six minutes a very rude young woman kept telling Carrie she had to wrap it up and close, even though one of us just spent $50 on a purse in their gift shop. She put the wines away and said we needed to taste all that we could before 5:30. It was as if the doors were on auto-lock like the place was a bank... And an older woman also had no tolerance for our presence as she emptied the register - which kept us from buying anything else. At 5:29 they asked all of us to leave and one of our guests slipped into the restroom. As she exited into the lobby, to their surprise, she caught the rude young woman refer to our group with derogatory language. We had just spent $300 at Helwig where Lewis stayed open an extra 30 mins late so we could buy a case and a club membership. I understand that it's a Tuesday night and everyone has a closing time... But we were trying to spend money and enjoy their products. Worst customer experience ever, I'll never go back. And we were happy to spend another $300 down the street at the Amador Store on wine and food. Go to Helwig. The wine is better. The view is better. The people are better.

First, I was very displeased with this wineries misleading "bistro." They claim to have "handmade pizza". But what they really have is Tyson frozen pizza crusts that they spray with some canned Sysco additive before placing some canned sauce and vegetables on it. The food was overpriced, the service was subpar. The atmosphere was different - not bad but a little gaudy. The music was a mix of Whitney Houston 80s with Italian. An example of their personality is that they charge their full time staff full price for anything in the "small town bistro." The tasting was more of an "official" process than you experience at the other, smaller wineries.

So many wines to choose from on the tasting list... Where to start? Well, this has been my first stop of the day since I have started tasting in Amador county. The winery itself is beautiful. Tuscan style architecture with gorgeous landscaping on the exterior. As you walk the pathway leading to the entrance, there is a huge fountain and lily pads everywhere. Gorgeous and double gorgeous. My experience with staff and the wine tasting was just fine. Like I said, there are a million wines on the tasting list. We did the full flight guided by a very sweet and informative lady who had been working there for some time. I am not fond of any of their whites, however the sauvignon blanc was crisp and tasty. The zinfandel is delicious, smooth and peppery. I didn't end up purchasing a bottle, none of the wines were really a "must have". I highly recommend this winery as a first stop to wow a crowd on your wine tasting adventure.

Beautiful place! very relaxing even when it is insanely packed lol. Arrived yesterday Carrie helped me and my husband she was extremely polite and even though extremely busy she always remembered what bottle was next. The setting of this winery is one of the best yet! The wines are amazing staff is amazing deff will be back again. If your passing through the gold country I highly recommend making time to stop by and visit.

Besides great wines and Ports, the personnel working the tasting room are a delight to visit with, Rebecca, Matt, Lou, John, and Tom. The Valentine's Day dinner was a great dinner, very relaxing and entertaining. The wine club is the best I've encountered. Living in Napa, I'd only join a wine club in Plymouth.

The view, the terrace, the food, the atmosphere, and the wine was all phenomenonal. You could get a pizza and a bottle of wine and sit outside for a fairly cheap, relaxing afternoon. The downfall of this place is the customer service. We came about 30 minutes before closing, and it was fairly clear that the employees were anxious to shuffle people out, and they were not overly helpful either. Still a great place.

Another great experience at Villa Toscano. We went for the 4th of July weekend BBQ. Just like their other winery Bella Piazza, this place knows how to do food. The 1/2 pound burger was not only high quality, the chef BBQing was able to give me mine medium rare as I reqeusted!!! So impressed! Of course they had their excellent wine case specials which we purchased and are very happy with. One more thing I love about this winery and Bella Piazza is that they read their Yelp reviews and respond! I always really appreciate when a business listens! It means they care.

Visited here today. Lovely grounds & a shop to buy a pizza. Nice outdoor area to enjoy your pizza & wine. Fee for wine tasting. We opted to buy a bottle instead of tasting. Got a bottle of their Barbera & it was great. I'd give it 4/5 stars. The pizza was 3/5 stars... I'd have liked a thinner cracker crust. Nice place to sit & chat with friends, have a bite to eat, before visiting the other area wineries this afternoon.

If I could give them zero I would but I do like some of their wine. I could have purchased more if they'd actually let us finish our tasting. 1) it was the only place that charged us for a tasting that day. 2) it was near closing time when we arrived, yet they happily charged us (up front) for the tasting fee. We were chatting with the staff and looking at the trinkets for sale and made purchases of wine and a snack (since they put everything away already). Well, we got to wine #5- of 12 plus barrel tastings!- and they said they were closing and we had to leave. I said "we just got here" and a man by the name of Jeff said that wasn't his problem! He repeated that it was 5:29 and they needed to close. I pointed out that they just took our $ less than 10 minutes earlier and if they didn't plan to serve us the whole list (I assumed because we were in the door and they took our money, that they planned to stay and finish our tasting) they shouldn't have charged us OR should have advised us that we might not get to taste everything. He said again that they were closing and that was too bad. I have never been treated so rudely at a winery. I also am shocked they deal with customers like that at all. I am shocked! I asked if we could at least get one more taste since it wasn't officially closing time, and he said no. Kerrie was our pourer and all she could do was apologize over and over. Then I said I wanted my money back and got loud and he said we could have one more pour- I said which I wanted and he freaked out and said "only the next on the list"... well I don't like that one and am sure that if I were allowed to taste the one I liked (the barbera) I'd have purchased some. Unfortunately, I was buying a few bottles for someone else that day so I did make a purchase but since I purchased enough bottles to receive a credit for our tastings but I only got 1 credit for all the bottles! I can't believe they only credited MY tasting- not the other guests. Since I paid for all the tastings, I can't believe they didn't give me credit for them all. They either need a new policy- like no entry or starting of tastings after 5 or they need to tell people they aren't getting a full tasting if they're too late in the day. The warning would have been nice. It was a sad ending to our day up there.

The grounds here again are total Tuscan style, really pretty. Great place to take someone for their first visit to the area cause it is what you would expect when you think of wine tasting. They have a little cafe area with desserts, pizzas & salads. Their brick over pizza's are very good the Margarita in particular is VERY good with the fresh mozzarella and basil. And there are a good amount of picnic tables outside on the patio to enjoy your lunch. The wine though is really lacking. It is $5 for tasting and you do get to try a lot of wine for that because it includes barrel tasting. So you try maybe 8 wines at the bar then move over and try a bunch more in the barrels. (if they have any barrels left). I took my sister here specifically to try to barrel tasting and then half way through the tasting they told us that they had sold everything in the barrels so there wasn't anything to try. So that was disappointing. When I did get to try the barrels, a time before with my husband, they were pretty good. Much better then what was being poured at the bar. This place overall is a little generic for me. Very touristy and can get really crowded. In fact I think every time we have been here it has been really crowded, you have to stand behind someone else at the bar. Not really how I like to do my tasting.

  • Ashley T.

The wine was delicious and the tasting price of $5 wasn't bad for the amount of wines you get to try. I will be going back for the wine and the comfortable and beautiful patio. I was really disappointed by the "snobby" atmosphere in the tasting room, as well as not having the ability to bring our own food. Like I said: beautiful place, great wine, and great amount of tastes. I just didn't like the idea that my husband couldn't fit in next to me at the tasting bar.. Heck, I barely fit myself. Luckily the staff were okay... Not the best customer service, but definitely knowledgable and were working hard. I not disappointed by the customer service, but I think they could have been a little better. Oh, please try the white barbera.. Yum!

Went here last week and was very impressed with the setup. Gorgeous outdoor seating with a nice little bistro. The woman in kitchen fixed us up a great cheese plate and was very helpful. Unfortunately the woman in the tasting room was extremely rude. She showed no interest in helping us and had a big attitude problem. The wine was good and I ended up buying a bottle of the White Barbera. It's a shame the lady in the tasting room left such a sour taste in our mouths, which definitely affected the overall rating of this winery.

Expectations? For a lovely drive without traffic through farmland and the gold foothills on our way to another fine wine region in California. Hopes? To discover a large variety of small non-corporate wineries in a very picturesque setting. Oh yes, and wines that are priced well. Been to the Napa Valley lately? Wishes? Will there also be dining venues and overnight accommodations nearby the wineries? Yes, Yes, YES! The Amador Valley is another lovely region of varietal vineyards and smaller wineries creating good wines from dry to sweet. Villa Toscano is one of the largest by local comparison and centrally located right off the main road. I find their wine very drinkable and priced well. The winery also has a great deli on premises and beautiful outdoor dining in an ideal and quiet setting. Take a day, drive 2 hours and check it out for yourself! You'll be really glad you did.

Attractive facility, but that's all they have to offer. The wines are mass produced and not at all as good as other wineries in Plymouth. The tasting room is a bit stuffy - not fun and welcoming. Instead of being disappointed here try - Youngs, Jeff Runquist, Cooper, Karmere, Dillian, or Driven - to name a few. They ALL have fabulous wines! They are all "family owned" with friendly, fun, and attractive tasting rooms. The grounds at Youngs and Karmere are exceptionally beautiful! Villa Toscano Winery deserves a -0 rating, in my opinion.

My girlfriend and I have been visiting this winery every few months for the past two years, and it's my favorite in the Plymouth area. Beautiful grounds and a fantastic outdoor terrace for dining. They had a special summer menu last weekend, and both of our dishes were fantastic!

Been here many times but this is fist time in 2014...This place has gone downhill...They used to have a fun atmosphere but they have some greasy long hair manager that keeps firing everyone. So today my friend and I went to Bella for lunch the other place they own and came here to see what new drinks they have. The tasting room attendants are robotic with zero personality and if you have the wine club then your service is almost non existent. It took about 8 min before anyone acknowledged us at the bar to begin with. The wines are mediocre...It is a shame because the property is nice and has potential...but with current management that is just a dream....Wildrotter and Karmere had much better wines and heck, they were more friendly.Sad to see just in a few months how they can fall apart!

Enjoyed a very nice lunch here the other day. The place has a great feel to it - and out in the vineyard boonies of Plymouth this place will surprise you. We did a little tasting first... it was a mid-week lunch, so I only tried a handful of wines... and stuck on the Centurion Old Vine Zin - that's their flagship and you can taste why. I was with a wine club member so the price was not too bad - about $30 for a bottle. We took that bottle and ordered a supreme pizza from the little deli. Prepared and cooked fresh it was a very tasty meal! The pizza was perfect for two and was about $15. My only complaint - and it's a common one with the wineries - please rinse the glasses better!! Nothing kills a nice wine more than a nose of dish-washing detergent! The tasting glasses we're not that bad, but the outdoor glasses were awful!! Give the glass a sniff and a rinse - if necessary - before you pour any of that liquid gold in. Bottom line - this is a great place to stop for lunch and I'll be back!!

We came here first on our day of Amador wineries because we were starved and they have a cafe. First, our lunches: I got a salad with artichoke hearts, grape tomatoes, fresh mozzarella balls, some greens and a side of tomato vinaigrette dressing. It was premade, but on a china plate under a clear plastic dome in the cooler, so clearly recently made. My BF got a pastrami sandwich and my friend got another salad with blueberries, raspberries, walnuts and greens. We were all very happy with our lunches! They were fresh, reasonably priced and delicious. Oh, and we got to enjoy them at one of many outside cafe tables next to a fountain of sorts. Perfect! Now, on to the wine! The wine was really good! I especially enjoyed the barbera. But they also had a few zins that were also delicious. I also picked up a bottle of white barbera. I'm not a white wine person, but on a hot summer day, it's perfect! The whole place is a little touristy - with all of their outdoor seating, gift shop in the tasting toom, etc., but not quite too touristy. We joined the club and will def be back!

Visited this past weekend. Tasted the wine and had some of their pizza. The setting is very nice, food was delicious. The wine - was ok. Tasting room was very very crowded so it was difficult to have any interaction with the people that were pouring the wine. Some guests had their children with them as that were running around while the parents were tasting... Go figure...

Pretentious, stuffy, sterile, and this establishment demands $5 up front. I can't stand wineries that seem more concerned with collecting their tasting fees then actually providing a delightful customer experience to customers by educating them about their specific wines. If you are looking for a corporate wine experience with mediocre wines and and a fat guy pouring wine... This is your place! If you are looking for good wine... Keep driving.

Nice enough facility. Let's just say I didn't walk out with any wines.

We've been here a number of times. In fact, we used to belong to the wine club here. The wines aren't bad, but nothing really stands out. They have a ton of wines on the tasting menu, but the fact of the matter is that the large majority of them are pretty mediocre. The grounds outside are very nice and the bistro makes a great margherita pizza. But once you get inside the winery...yikes! A bunch of touristy looking merchandise. If you like whites, the viognier and the white barbera are quite good. The reds are nothing to write home about. The port is very good. Customer service seems to have gone downhill in the last year or so. We were in there today and often waited forever to get our next pour. The first server who started with us disappeared on us. Same with server number two (even though he said, "I'll be here to serve you the whole time"). Server number 3 finished our tasting and disappeared even though everyone in our party of 6 wanted to buy wine. Finally, a fourth member of the staff (who we had to flag down) took our orders and rang us up. Step up your game, Villa Toscano. If you're in Plymouth and looking for a good winery, go to Renwood and Cooper. Don't waste your time here.

Went to Villa Toscano's tasting room on a all you can eat pasta Friday. It was pretty packed but was able to be serviced fairly quickly... Pros: I really loved the old vines and the ports. Restrooms were clean and the staff was friendly. Cons: I felt like I was at a car dealership for a minute because our pourer was pushing the wine club harder than a new Ford Focus at the auto mall. Will definitely go back...

The outside is beautiful and great for photos... ...but then you enter and it looks like Tuscany threw up all over the place. I would say that 99% of the kitsch would fit perfectly well in, let's say, the over-the-top home of The Real Housewives of New Jersey's Teresa Giudice or Dina Manzo. I mean, not that I know anything about their homes since I totally wouldn't ever watch The Real Housewives of [fill in the blank]. *blush* I thought I could set aside the decor but then we stood at the counter waiting to be acknowledged...and kept standing...and kept standing. Yes, they were a bit busy but they had two people pouring, there was plenty of room at the counter and the guy working there still proceeded to look right at us while ringing up a few people without even a nod or "I'll be right with you". I do have to say that once he did get to us, he warmed up and was actually pretty nice - asking where we were from, chatting about their wines and taking a photo for us. Unfortunately, I really didn't care for most of their wines. Meh.

UGH! the only thing i liked about this place was that it was a lovely spot for lunch. but the wine? please this is such a gawdy attempt at napa. we all have our tastes but the syrah i tried was way off and the sauvignon blanc was very dull. come here for their freshly fired pizzas, salads, breads and such. lunch! but the wines are WAY overpriced and mediocre at best. frankly there were a few of them that i tried, which were priced $24-ish, that would have make me feel downright cheated if i had gambled on a bottle at bevmo.

    (2)
  • Erika J.

Very commercial. Staff was rude and I had paid in advance for a group tasting, yet was barely awarded enough attention to have my questions answered. I couldn't even inquire about purchasing a bottle (which i usually do whenever i taste in a group) but i didn't here and I'm glad. Blah wines and blah people. This is not what Amador is about.

  • N M M.

Eh...not for my palette. Or the palettes of the friends with me. The wines remind me of light grape juice to put it kindly. The staff actually announced that it was "last call" and told us they could no longer serve wine. They told us they'd get in a lot of trouble from the owner if they stayed late as well. If you're looking for a faux Tuscan "experience" and want to purchase handbags along with your Home Goods style decor then this is the place for you.

I understand they are the sister winery to Bella Piazza. And they are just as busy as Bella Piazza was on this day. Unfortunately their one server was not as attentive to everyone's needs and I left because I did not served. It was ok since I already visited Bella Piazza but I was a little disappointed. Yes, there were groups of people but the other server managed to serve everyone whereas this male server wasn't. The grounds are beautiful and I would definitely give this winery another try.

Not really there for the wine; more for the atmosphere and a good lunch. It worked out pretty well. Had a fresh berry salad, a tri tip sandwich, and a grilled chicken sandwich. All delicious. Wine was okay, too. Know the best part, though? There's a baker there; I think she runs the kitchen. We tasted 3 items. . . Flourless chocolate cake, chocolate rum balls, and chocolate covered, applewood smoked bacon. The cake we could do without. Just a little too rich. The rum balls were really, really good. After visiting a few other wineries, I was tempted to go back for one more rum ball before heading home. The chocolate covered bacon was the best, though. No explanation needed, right?

Villa Toscano is a quaint little villa-style winery with an unfortunate commercial feel to it. To compare it to the Olive Garden is just a little mean, but I couldn't help but feel like they shopped for their décor at Cost Plus and Pier 1. The property features a bistro, which is a double edged sword - on one hand, it's an easy opportunity to grab lunch or a snack (food in your stomach is key to surviving a full day of wine tasting), but on the other hand they don't allow any outside food to be consumed on the property (which they remind you with about fifty signs). Fortunately there are plenty of other vineyards nearby with great picnic areas. The bistro itself was a bit disappointing - mostly prepackaged sandwiches and salads. However, they do have a small menu of fresh pizzas - we ordered the toscano chicken, which turned out to be just what we wine junkies needed. Once you get inside the tasting room, you might have a bit of trouble finding the bar - the small room is packed with cheesy gifts and more cheap Pier 1 artwork for sale. But once you get to the counter you'll find free bottle and barrel tastings and a large selection of wines to taste. I interacted with a handful of people behind the wine counter, all of whom were perfectly pleasant, albeit not terribly well informed. If you find a wine you like and want to enjoy a full glass in the court yard, you'll have to fork over $9, which seemed a little pricy. However, I mentioned that I was heading to the bistro for lunch and received an exceptionally generous 'taste' to take with me. Across the board, I found the wines to be pleasant but generally unimpressive. If they were $10-$15 a bottle the Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Barbera and Viognier would all make great every day table wines, but at $25+ it's hard to justify the price tag (I suppose that's where the wine club comes into play). However, I was really impressed with the Orange Muscat. It's a hard to find, but delicious variety, and a decent value at $14/bottle.

Beautiful grounds (although kind of out of place...). Decent wines. No charge to taste either! And they have A LOT of wines!! They had a Pinot Grigio so that made me happy. Their Merlot was also pretty good. Again, I tend more towards Italian varietals and I appreciated the fact they had a Barbera. They also had a Tempranillo, which was all right (I've had better). The tasting room manager was very nice and happy to answer all of our questions. He also offered to take a photo of us after he saw me taking pictures. Another little side note: they carry a wine called Jake's Old Vine Zin, made with grapes that come from my friends' family's vineyards. So, again, a nice, personal connection to Toscano. Apparently 2007 is the last vintage they're selling, so go get some fast!! Thought the embellishments (especially in the tasting room) were a little gaudy, but nice effort...!! Oooh, another interesting feature about this place: their barrel futures, where you get newer wines by the case at a discounted price (you skip the bottling process, I guess... ask the tasting room manager -- he'll be happy to explain it to you)! You'll want to try Toscano if you go tasting in Amador. If only for the experience!!

  • Tiffany K.

Okay, so I gotta give this place four stars for the effort alone. Beautiful grounds, it does seem like what an American would envision Italy to be like: garden speakers playing American-Italian music abound (think Frank Sinatra), fountains, lots of terra cotta planters. Although I never visited a winery in Italy, I don't think it would be like this. Like other reviewers have said, the wine clubs are highly marketed here. I'm sure that the pourers make a commission. Our guy, who didn't speak about the wines much, suddenly went into great detail about the wine club - especially the pasta buffet on Fridays. Lots of wines on the tasting menu -- perhaps too many? There were at least a dozen. Honestly, none of the wines really stood out for me, but the experience was fun. The tasting room on the weekend was packed. Lots of home decor that was big and over the top, if you're into large glass vases (pronounced "vah-ses") and Tuscan-themed wall hangings, you'd like it here. There is also a deli area, something that other wineries in the area don't offer. Their cookies hit the spot - $.50 per cookie, the snickerdoodle was exceptionally large!

To start, driving onto the property you almost want to just stop the car and admire the GORGEOUS grounds. The property is truly breath taking. You pull around and find a parking spot in the large gravel parking lot. Don't think my mention of gravel is a bad thing. I actually like the fact that a lot of the wineries in this area go with a gravel driveway. 1. It adds to the rustic charm. 2. Why spend money on paving the drive way/parking lot when you could sink that money into your vineyards? First thing I did was to grab a quick bite to eat as I was starving! I had also been told that the food here was good. I walked in and ordered a margherita pizza. The lady working in the cafe was so sweet and was just bubbling over with a great personality. The prices were very fair considering everything was fresh and made to order. There were sandwiches as well, but they were pre-made and I didn't want to judge this cafe on something that wasn't made right then and there. The dining area was just across the way. There are plenty of little bistro tables outside for when the weather is nice. And there is a large dining area that is protected from the weather for when it's not. The pizza was GREAT! It actually reminded me of the pizza I have had while in Italy and Sicily. After eating I decided to go and check out the wines after being so impressed with the staff and the food. Well, this is where the high side of the review stops. The wines were simply not good at all. I went through 5 different varietals and nothing tasted as it should in my opinion. In fact, if it weren't for the food and staff this would be a 1-2 star review. Probably 2 stars because the staff in the tasting room were also great and the grounds being so beautiful. The wines tasted very young and the flavors were not well developed. Many of the reds were still quite hot due to a high alcohol content. If you want a gorgeous view and some tasty lunch then do swing by Villa Toscano. But if you're looking for great Amador County wines then look elsewhere. I really do hate to write reviews like this since there are such strong positives in other areas. But being honest is what it's all about at the end of the day.

Let me start by saying that I am 23. When I arrived at the winery I was amazed at how pretty it is and loved the fact that it had a bistro on the premises. My friends and I (all winemaking students) entered the tasting room and went up to the counter. There we were greeted by two men that asked for our IDs and then poured us several tastes. They were funny and entertaining, perfect tasting room hosts. I noticed that there was barrel tasting going on, so one of my friends I took our glassed and walked over. I asked to try one of the Zins. The curly haired woman at the barrels actually gave me a dirty look and then, with plenty of attitude, said "um, I'm going to need to see ID." I understand that I am under 40 and am not offended to be IDed. However, the way that it was said to me was ridiculous. I have never been treated with such blatant disrespect. Even my friend that was standing right next to me said "nevermind" after hearing how the woman spoke to me. I promptly gathered my other friends and told them that we were leaving. It is a shame that this one person could ruin what started as a great tasting room experience, but it did. I left the place upset and will probably never return. Not only that, but because of this experience, I will probably tell my friends not to visit this establishment. On our trip to Amador, my group visited such amazing wineries. I would recommend all of them except for Toscano. It seems obvious that the tasting room needs to hire polite salespeople as you only get one first impression and this was not a good one.

This winery has gone down hill since the last time I visited here.....They now charge $5 for Wine tasting and are very pretentious....I would avoid it...Staff is only interested in selling wine club memberships. The wine was only average.

I should have written a review on this place a long time ago. Since everyone else has written great descriptions about the scenery and shop, let me just bullet point my review for you: -If you go here last after wine tasting, the wines are really good -Wines for the most part are a bit watery and not very complex- so go for the old vine zin's if you are looking for something bold and big -Service is inconsistent: -I came here for a birthday lunch and it was very pretty and relaxing -I came here with a visitor from England and they (some woman who either owned or managed the place) were so rude to us after we bought wine that we packed up and left to Amador Cellars down the road to finish our lunch -I came here with a group and we ate their pizza (you are absolutely not allowed to bring in any other outside food- just FYI) and the pizza was OK Bottom Line- wine is overpriced for the quality. Go to any of the other wineries and enjoy what you went for...the wine!

Excellent food particularly for that area. They are rightfully famous for their pizza. Poor to mediocre wines. Low rent bar staff. The pourer actually dropped the F-bomb. Pretty grounds featuring very "faux Tuscan" architectural style and finish. It's a tourist trap. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds.

A nice last stop on our winery tour today. The magheritta pizza was fantastically delicious, and the grounds were relaxing and beautiful. The wine was just "ok" and we really weren't tempted to buy any of it. The tasting staff member was super friendly, but plugged that damn wine club every other sentence. I generally try to buy something from every winery we visit, especially if the staff is nice, but I could barely even attempt to buy a single bottle without the pitch coming back again. It was a soft sell, but consistent.

My wife and I are members, but not for much longer. We joined because the wine is good and they offer a free buffet weekly to their members. The problem is the one time every other month or so we come to enjoy the buffet, the place is over taken by the local seniors. The last time we came, we could'nt even get a seat. They should limit the locals on one free lunch a month so that others, who don't take advantage, can come and enjoy as well.

I will NEVER go here again! My husband and I were devoted fans of this winery until we attended the wine tasting last Saturday. The barrel wine room associate, Andre, was the BIGGEST jerk! I've never met a "wine snob" until I met him. I paid $5 to taste their wine and was treated like a complete idiot. I am so disappointed in the customer service we received. We will put our money and loyalty elsewhere.

Beautiful grounds & nice gift shop. We loved the Barbera & purchased a bottle. They have a small cafe & we had lunch there--their pizzas are delicious. It was very relaxing enjoying our lunch outside.

They have great ambiance and decent servers, but their wine is a bit lack luster. Id recommend coming here for the expereince, a nice tasting room with a large list to taste from, but Id caution that you probably wont want to buy anything from here. But palates are all different and maybe you just might fancy one of theirs.

  • Lindsay B.

I can totally understand the mixed reviews after visiting this place today, but I'm still going to go with a solid 4 stars for a few reasons. Even though it slightly resembles an overdone Olive Garden with all its Tuscan embellishments and faux paint finishes, I think it's pretty and charming. Yes of course people come wine tasting for the wine, but having nice grounds and an attractive tasting room certainly adds to the experience. Nice courtyard settings with plenty of seating, and good picture opportunities next to the vines. The tasting room itself is on the smaller side and filled with lots of overpriced food goodies and decor items. The counter isn't very big, which makes it hard to get up there for a pouring when it's crowded. Our wine consultant today was a nice younger guy who didn't overdo the snobby wine talk. We pretty much let it be known that we didn't have refined palates or much vino knowledge, and he seemed content to just keep pouring for us and let us have fun. For a free tasting, the flight list is pretty long, which is definitely a plus. I didn't love any of the reds, though the Syrah was decent. I really liked the Shenandoah Pinot and the Orange Muscat. I bought a bottle of each, but I was able to use my friend's 50% off discount, which certainly sweetened up the deal. I would absolutely come here again on a tasting trip and bring a picnic to enjoy on the grounds.

We are wine club members here. Mostly for the perks, free al fresco lunches on Fridays! They do have some tasty wines & some mediocre ones, too. The tasting room is pretty & filled with over-priced decor for sale. I have to say, however, their staff could use some work. I found it off-putting & a little rude when she made us pay up front for the tasting fee. There was our party of four & one other couple in the whole entire tasting room....come on, really? Oh, and then we paid tax on top of our tasting fee. I have been to a lot more expensive wineries & some that aren't, & I have NEVER had this happen. I think she thought we were cheap & didn't want to invest any time with us & when we showed interest with the membership she brightened right up. Maybe work on the customer service, eh? Besides that, the grounds are beautiful & with lots of patio tables outside, it is the perfect place to have a picnic or the pasta lunch when the weather is beautiful. We've been here during events & it can get pretty busy. Still a fun place to come once in a while. I have heard the pizzas on Sunday rock, so can't wait to try that out sometime soon. The same people own Bella Piazza, also, & I would definitely apply my above review for there as well. Especially with the staff. :-/

The wine is okay. Not a huge fan, though the port was delicious, it's hard to mess up a port. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful. I'm considering having my wedding here. Amy, the events planner is so friendly! I liked her a lot.

I absolutely love this place, it's the best winery near Amador, my favorite wine is Port wine I usually get that and chicken pizza. Their employees are super nice and they look like they are having fun at work :) the place is beautiful and not overpriced me and my friend just love it there!!!

I hadn't been to Villa Toscano in years, but went back recently and was sorely disappointed by the wine and the service. Our pourer barely spoke to us (except to read us the backs of the bottle) and the wine had nothing to it. The kind of wine that you sip and when they ask what you think about it you say something nondescript and polite like "it's really light" or "it's nice." Anyway, without a friend hooking me up with free pasta buffet, Villa Toscano looks a lot less appealing.

I flew up north to go wine tasting with my girlfriend Christy and some of her friends this past weekend, despite suffering from either walking pneumonia or SARS. Wine is THAT worth it to me. Give me wine or give me death! I am the Patrick Henry of drinking. After breakfast on Saturday morning, we piled into Julie's SUV and headed out towards El Dorado County. It only took us about 30 minutes to get lost. After passing our turn twice, we finally got on the right road and decided to stop one of the first wineries we saw, Villa Toscano. It's got a faux Italian glow to everything inside, like an overdone Olive Garden. The place was slammed when we got there, so apparently that works for some people. We tried several wines, most notably a couple of fairly decent Zinfandels (2003 Late Harvest Zinfandel and 2003 Fox Creek Old Vine Zinfandel.) However, the prices per bottle were a little high ($32) given that they were honestly only okay wines. However, the landscaping was very pretty and we stopped to smell some unusual lavender roses that had the most amazing scent - almost like candy and roses at the same time, if that doesn't sound crazy. I guess that makes this the day of wine and roses. (Okay, that was just awful.) Anyhow, I'm sure some people really like this place, but I found it a bit pedestrian and touristy. There are way better wineries in El Dorado.

I'm not a wine drinker but I did get a few tastes. From what I tried, I'm liking it. Nothing too outrageous that I must be back for. However, I will be back for the Marguerita pizza. I can't believe how delicious that dough was. Mixed with gracious helpings of mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced tomato and whole basil leaves, this pizza is so delicious, you'll want two. But they're definitely big enough to share for a couple (price $15.99).

Lots of mediocre wine to taste for free. Equal quality with Temecula. In Amador, you can do much better.

While visiting Villa Toscano Winery and Bella Piazza Winery I enjoyed the BEST Marghertia pizza with fresh tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese and pesto) I've had in Northern CA at the Bistro. Kudos to the Chef (young lady with long braid) for an excellent pizza! I'll be back!

Worst experience ever!! The wine has a horrible smell and after taste!! I had the god awful experience of meeting the owner who looks as if some one tucked her ears to the back of her head! What a wierdo!! I explained how bad the server was and the wine and she said " not for everyone". Seriously DO NOT WASTE your time!! There are so many other winery's worth your visit to the area. Recommend Karmere, Dobra, Windwalker and Toogood! If you want crappy and no nothing about wine....go to Villa Toscano and Bella Piazza!! Worst winery ever.
