This is a great place to bring you four legged companion!! And an awesome place for a great burger, sweet potato fries, or as we like to order it - half sweet potato half regular. We brought our puppy here for his first birthday, and he loved people watching while sipping on some ice water and getting attention from people walking by. Highly recommend the outdoor seating on a nice day!

Awesome burgers, though I usually get the grilled chicken. It's sooo moist! Throw on some cranberries and caramelized onions... So good! I have certain friends that, when they come over, this is the only place they want to go.

Went for dinner and got a chicken Cesar salad. Instead of having salad, it was a half of an entire lettuce, and was really wilted. And it was extremely burnt, even the croutons. Not good. I would not recommend coming here at all. The service was also absolutely horrible. Everyone was rude. Do not come here. Save the $13 it costs for a terrible salad

I actually had a chicken burger which was very good. I got a side of hot wing sauce, which was incredibly good with the chicken. They had whole wheat buns, so I was very pleased that there were healthier options. I could understand how this would be a 3- star type place, but I had a 4-star experience. Delicious chicken! I don't even like chicken that much and this was good.

When they're on it's a pretty good burger. It should be good since you're the one who customizes it. However, we've had a couple experiences where the bun was super dry (probably old) and the sweet potato fries were burnt on the tips. If you've ever had a burnt sweet potato fry you know that it tastes super bitter. The novelty of customizing your burger is fun at first, but in the end if I'm going to drop the 10 bucks on a burger I'm going somewhere more consistent.

I have a great one locally in wc but glad to see another great location with great service and the same great food! I like my burgers with not a ton on it, so meat quality is at the top of my list, and I think the counter has some of the best. I have had burgers at almost every place I can think of and it's one of best to me! They also ask now if you want your fries with the burger or before instead of just bringing them before and I like that. Good potions, topping, and staff as always. Me and my gf also sat at the bar and they gave free milkshake samples! SOLD - It was so good I had to buy one, not that you ever half to ask me twice if I want a milkshake!

Like all the, loosely, unique toppings you can have. I picked red peppers, brie, bacon, garlic aioli, and pineapple. The burger patty was way overcooked, to the point it tastes like nothing. The toppings made my burger 3/4 foot tall; I couldn't eat my burger like a burger, it's impossible. I had to deconstruct my burger to fit it in my mouth. Burger gets 2 stars (maybe 1 star for choice of toppings, but it's not as important as the patty). Price is okay...a little on the pricey side. What is really good is their sweet potato and onion strips. Salty like how I like it, not a bad price for what you get.

FINALLY A DECENT PLACE FOR A GOOD BURGER AND FRIES! Too bad it's all the way down in Palo Alto, but that's okay.. Awesome place with a unique menu of choosing your burger dressings. Why is it missing one star you may ask?! Well, after having to fill out a form answering every question under the sun about how I want my burger made, it never asked me how I want it cooked and therefor it came out very pink... and we all know how I don't do pink.

I'm only in the mood for a burger maybe twice a year, so I really like to make those times count. The Counter made it count -- great burger. Their meat, bun, cheese, topping, and sauce selections are large, almost ridiculously so. (Mine was 1/3rd lb beef on a honey-wheat bun with jalapeño jack cheese, pickles, sautéed onions, and applewood smoked bacon.) The fries (both regular and sweet-potato) are also excellent. Although I ordered my burger medium-well (and got it that way), friends I was with who also ordered theirs medium-well got theirs ranging from well-done to medium-rare, hence there's some variance in what the kitchen turns out. Be warned.

Not worth the hype. I understand this place gets busy but we actually got there early before the crowd during lunch. We literally waited 30 mins before our food arrived after ordering. Pricey? definitely, but I expected a better tasting burger. It's mediocre even compared to my nephew's homemade burger and he's a teen. Even though it wasn't under my tab, I probably won't be coming back, I'll opt for better food in the area.

This place is great, I mean what's not cool about building your own burger?!. They have all kinds of different buns, cheeses, condiments everything you need to make you're perfect burger. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was how I had to purchase my fries as an appetizer instead of it coming together as a meal, that's why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. Other then that everything was fresh & tasted wonderful. Nice atmosphere, I would definitely go back.

The counter's line was long! I came here with my friends (group of 6) and we were able to be squeezed into a booth within 15 minutes. You get to make your own burgers or take the market selection. I ordered the chicken burger but it was a bit dry, as was the burger. The carne asada looked, smelled, and definitely tasted the best! I definitely recommend the sweet potato fries...yum! :)

Pricey, burgers are ok. Went once, never went back. Hard to distinguish between all those burger places out there.

If you are a burger fan you better get to The Counter. The customizations are overwhelming. The burgers are yummy and plenty of combos (chicken, turkey, bison was the special of the month, beef, etc.). Millions of toppings and sauces and buns...I had the pretzel bun! So good. The bun was actually the best part. They also offer salad-burgers. The staff were great and we had a sweet little table outside. Overall it was great, I most likely won't be a regular - not that big of a burger fan apparently.

Very good burgers! I love the burgers at the Counter! Good service, food food but almost $14 for a burger is a lot! But on California St. location you cannot go wrong. Nice area outside. Overall food is very good but pricy.

The Counter is a household name when it comes to gourmet burgers. The burgers are definitely delicious but a bit over priced. Like everyone else, I really enjoyed the sweet potato fries. The sweetness of the potato with it's blistered outer shell is a treat in anyone's mouth. The ability to "build" your burger is fun and involves you in the ordering process.

order: the sampler platter I don't kno how many times I've been here for the sampler trio...but it's always an empty bowl in a matter of minutes. the burgers are average, after three or four times i get over it and just order the chicken sandwich. the 1/3 pounder is generally enough for anyone. ambience is nice, the medium-rare meat itself is good and the bun is healthy and hearty. oh the chili is good. i guess i'm over the hype, except for the sampler platter, which is always worth it. todo: burger salad

I am keeping my rating the same, but I had lunch here again today and the temperature inside the restaurant was FREEZING. I had goosebumps on my legs the entire time I was eating, and it made for an uncomfortable dining experience. The manager did bring me a blanket to put over my legs, as the temperature inside is controlled by central air and can't be regulated by the restaurant. I was also served a really brown, spotted piece of avocado that should never have made it out of the kitchen.
