Awesome meal and experience. I had chicken croquettes and salad with cilantro-garlic dressing, which I would highly recommend. Portions were very sizeable, but the quality was so good, I could have eaten more and more. I think everyone in my party enjoyed their dishes. The owner (I assume he was the owner) was very friendly and ready to explain the various dishes and how they should be eaten. He was very passionate about his food and it showed. I would definitely eat there again - tomorrow even!

This place is fantastic. Tucked away in an enclave of old victorian houses with outdoor seating this is a gem of downtown Oakland. The owner is a fantastic guy and the food is out of this world. Jerk chicken plate - this thing is awesome the cilantro salad dressing is really great too Jerk chicken burrito - Same idea as the plate but in burrito form. Amazing. Protip: have them put the cilantro salad dressing inside the burrito. You're welcome. This place is a win in every category, food, ambience, service. Just go.

One of these houses is not like others. One of these houses is just not the same. One of these houses is Rio California! Somewhere in the middle of the slowly upgrading Old Oakland area, there stands Preservation Park. With old historic houses, beautiful flowers, and a lush fountain. It also has one of the most perfect weekday breakfast/lunch spots ever. On a grey rainy day, my lunch date and I entered the well lit, warm, bright space to to virtually the whole cafe to ourselves! The victorian archetecture complemented the inviting one room spot with simple yet homey decor. We ordered rich hot coffee, a hardy spinach empanada, a light and flavorful shrimp salad, rich and buttery grilled talapia with rice. All of the dishes were fresh and had a comforting and down to earth tone. I felt like I was eating perfect home cooked food...which it was! Our meal came to about $25 which I thought was pretty reasonable given the quality and gigantic quality of food we recieved. To make you feel even more at home, Nate (who I assume is the owner) is more than simply friendly. He truely cares about his customers, getting to know them, remembering names, giving us a generous sample (ie a whole thigh) of jerk chicken, and being an absolute delight! Ever think of opening a small perfect restarurant and cafe? It'll be hard to beat this.

Went here yesterday for a lunch date. Really great location with a friendly staff. The food was excellent, especially the Jerk Chicken which is pretty close to what I had growing up. Excellent prices & definitely would recommend it
(5)Mario J.
Was hard to finally eat there because of their schedule but when I finally did, I was amazed! Food was great and the gentlemen at the cashier was extremely helpful on helping me choose and even thought me the correct way to eat the dish I got, I had one of the specials of the day, which was some chicken croquet I think I'm saying that right lol. Will definitely come back and will for sure recommend!

It's in a very quiet, nice part of Oakland not far from the center. i had the jerk chicken and chicken empanadas and they were both delicious. The salad was very fresh with a delicious, homemade dressing. All this food was barely over $13, which makes this a bargain compared to most places in the bay area. To top it all off, the owner was genuinely friendly, which definitely adds to the great experience. After your meal, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the sun on the benches outside. Highly recommended

I absolutely love this place! I try to go at least twice a month. A friend of mine introduced me to this spot I fell in love from the very first bite. The jerk chicken is cooked to perfection. Nice and juicy. The cilantro salad dressing is so flavorful. I always order the chicken crochet for lunch and its to die for! The owner is very nice and friendly and he always takes time to see how me and my friend have been. Awesome guy. If you're looking for a little taste of Brazil in the Bay this place is definitely where you should come.

Looking to escape the city feel for a quick bite during lunch? This place is truly a HIDDEN GEM in the downtown Oakland area. Surrounded by the quaint and charming Victorian houses of Preservation Park, this is the spot I take friends to when they visit me for lunch during the office hours. Great service, cute ambiance, nice location, and delicious food. As a creature of habit, I've only had the jerk chicken burrito which was recommended to me by coworkers. I want to try the rest but it's so good, I can't not order it. Plus the portions are pretty nice - for me, it's easily two meals.

I always say food and music can take your mind back to pleasant memories and/or good times in your life. Rio California is one place that did that for me. A couple days a week they serve (wednesdays, thursdays) feijoada, which is a dish that always makes me remember good times from my past. A savory, meaty, stick to your ribs kind of dish. A beloved national dish in Brazil, which in turn became a beloved dish to me as well. No where else will you find this in Oakland. Also coming highly recommended by my friend is the jerk chicken. The Victorian house converted to restaurant has a real comfortable atmosphere. In fact my friends and I all ordered to go, but because of the comfortable setting we ended up changing our minds (ghetto, lol) and eating our to-go-plates there. The owner Ney was a very down to earth guy. He really has a nice little restaurant going here. This is definitely going to be a regular lunch spot for me. As good as it gets!
(5)Brett C.
I haven't left a yelp review in a while mainly because nothing has inspired me. Well today that changed after visiting/eating here. Delicious food and a personable owner - a combo that can't be beat. I had the jerk chicken, it was tender and a low - medium heat that was full flavored (surprised me because I luv hot spicy food that'll leave the average person sitting on a block of ice the next morning). The salad dressing is again a light tasty Brazilian concoction. If in dwtn Oakland do yourself and your taste buds a f(l)avor and stop in. Oh, the plate portions ... they aren't skimpy.
(5)Parminder Nayyar C.
The Jerk Chicken was amazing! Perfect blend of spices and flavor! Loved the salad that it comes with. I wish this place was open a little longer and over weekends!

Rio California is the best kind of restaurant. It is truly a hidden gem in downtown Oakland. A 12 minute walk from my office on 13th/Broadway takes me to a (hopefulyl sunny) outdoor dining area in a restored victorian in preservation park. It really makes you wonder, "Am I in downtown Oakland?"...birds chirping, squirells running around on the trees, people laughing, eating and socializing. What really makes this place great is the fresh food and the pride in ownership, the owner is an incrediblly nice man who treats every customer, new and old like VIP. He is happy to explain the dishes and comes around routinely asking how things are, he has even given us samples to try from one dish when we opted for a different dish, so we could keep that in mind next time we come back. When I want a special escape or have someone visiting me downtown this is where I come. Every time I have come I have found ample seating, but I know it can get busy. LOVE this place and hope the owners' heart and soul and good food pays off. Favorites: jerk chicken with salad, fish tacos, seafood risotto. Also love the guarana soda, tastes like vanilla cherry pop and gives a caffeine kick!
(5)Jess s.
Prior to Rio I've never had Brazilian food before & boy did it blow my mind! The jerk chicken was done perfectly! Juicy , tender , falls right off the bone type. Each order was pretty big in my opinion, so we opted to get one order and share between a coworker and I since we weren't too hungry yet. The owner was SUPER nice & even split the chicken and gave us extra salad to make it a full serving each after he found out we were sharing. My only gripe with Rio California is that it's really hidden. Unless you had a GPS on, it's hard to find it. It's located in a really quiant Victorian house community and is probably one of the only restaurants on that block. Granted there's not alot of seating inside the restaurant itself, there's quite a bit right outside on the patio. Definitely, will be one of my go to lunch spots. That is if i remember how to get there!
(4)Joey H.
I love this place! The owner is so nice! He basically tells you what to eat if you're unfamiliar.
(5)Ash P.
This place is hidden away and when you go there it feels as if you've discovered a secret restaurant. The place isn't very large but the food is amazing. My coworker introduced me to this place and their menu looks fantastic but I decided to play it safe and order a burger. I was pleasantly surprised at the burger because it tasted really fresh and the flavor was delicious. I also like the way they decoratively added the cheese on my burger. The next time I visit I plan to be a little more adventurous and order something different.
(5)Kayla A.
You walk into a neighborhood called Preservation Park and a few building homes down you come across Rio California. Walking up the stairs, I remember thinking that this feels like I'm going to a wealthy friend's Victorian home for lunch. You walk in and get greeted by a friendly man as he takes orders for the customer's ahead, looks like they are regulars. The prices seemed really good with sandwiches from $5-7 named after Brazilian landmarks. From the previous photos posted on their yelp page, I had made up my mind to try the Jerk Chicken with rice and salad. My boyfriend wanted to try the Feijoada which was black beans with different sausages, rice, greens and a grainy substance. Both were very delicious. We sat outside on the deck surrounded by greenery... The setting was pleasant :) And the customer service was wonderful. A hidden gem. I hope to come back again sometime soon!
(5)Fabiola R.
Went two days in row for lunch... Food was delicious and affordable. Excellent customer service!
(5)Kirsten V.
This place is tucked away you might not even know it existed. It's amongst all the Victorians in Preservation Park so it's a beautiful setting. You almost feel like you're eating on someones deck at their house. I had the empanadas which came with a green salad and a delicious green dressing. I think it was around $6 too! If you work in Oakland and can walk over, definitely worth it!
(4)Jamila I.
I loved this place! The owner was very friendly and the service was more than I've ever gotten at any other place. It felt like I had gone to my uncle's house and he had just made me some delicious beef empanadas! Preservation Park is such a neat place; the houses are so cute and the whole area is just great. We were staying in San Francisco for a weekend getaway and decided to drive over the Oakland bridge and lo and behold I yelped to find a nice place to eat and we found this place. Such a pleasant surprise! I can't say enough about this place and wish I could go back. Too bad I live in San Diego. ;( Thank you Rio for making our day!
(5)Lauren G.
Super good food at a reasonable price and in a lovely setting. You'll forget where you are on a nice day as you are nestled between old houses in Preservation Park. Don't look way up and you won't notice 12th city center humming in the distance or the freeway nearby. I got these delicious chicken kabobs with a great rice and salad on the side. The service is slightly harried by friendly.
(5)Nikki c.
Thanks to Shelley S for hipping me to this spot. They move pretty quickly. I wish the menu was a little clearer. Also, this is one of those places where the order/paying flow is a little unruly. You walk in, stare aimlessly at several different menus, and try to figure out what you want. Gail from the accounting department, who gets the same thing every Wednesday when she comes, will be huffing and puffing and trying to cut in line ahead of you to order. After you order, they don't give you a little number or anything, you just grab a table and pray to the lunch gods that they bring you the correct thing. The salad was a little heavily dressed for me. The empanada had raisins....BUT, I would be willing to come back and work my way through the menu....As long as there aren't any accountants in line behind me. FYI - If you want to use a credit card, there's a $10 minimum
(4)Rachel A.
So peaceful and serene! Loved the historic home the restaurant is in. The owner was very nice and enthusiastic about his traditional Brazilian food. And the food was delicious!! Nice portions. You can tell he really has pride for his food, as well he should. I was impressed with the menu, a lot of healthy options for vegetarians as well. We sat outside, it was a lovely day. Nice view of the gardens and houses. AND you can bring in your own wine and beer!

I rarely give five stars but I felt inclined to here (and not the forced inclination either with the offer of money, power, women, or a gingerbread castle with a full chocolate tower manned by lollipop guards armed with candy canes and love). Nay, my five star reviews are sacred ratings that is only reserved for the best of the best that all the Oompa Loompa slave labor can't buy... short of a whole factory worth (*side note anyone who is willing to offer a self-sustaining factory where you just need to pay the workers a fraction of the final product in exchange for a 5 star rating PM me). I found Rio California on yelp and from the many positive reviews I had some pretty high expectations for it. Not only did this place meet my expectations, it exceeded it. This is even more impressive from the fact that I usually make some pretty unreasonable expectations, like that time I wanted my hamster to jump through that ring of fire, WHICH IT UTTERLY FAILED!! I could only watch in disappointed boredom as it rode its stupid hamster sized bike over a hamster sized tightrope while juggling hamster pellets. Ugh, hamsters are so disappointing, they can't play fetch, can't cover for you at work, and I end up spending so much money at the Human Objects Made For Hamsters Store. Anyways, Rio California is kinda hidden (in the middle of preservation park) located in a building that looks like someone's house, this made it even more charming because I felt like I was breaking into someone's home and having them cook for me and serve me lunch while the wife and children huddle in fear in the corner asking me why I'm doing this and I'm all like "SHUT UP, I JUST WANT SOME FUCKING SAUSAGES" as I proceed to demand that he doesn't over cook the beans. (I have a really wide definition of what is charming). Besides the location, the service was really good; the owner is constantly friendly and seemed genuinely interested in the customer getting a good meal over money. In fact if I told him I didn't have any money to pay for the food, he would toss me out in the friendliest manner ever (I bet he would give me time to cover face before throwing me into the bush). He even complimented me on my choice of their daily special of Feijoada, which made me feel really good about my order and really smart too, it gave me confidence to give one of my clients business advice without any authorization from the supervisor. That client is out of business now, but I got a great meal so the universe is balanced again. Not only was he friendly, he was helpful, he taught me how to eat certain things that I would have just wolfed down whole and pretend to like because I like to pretend to be cultured and sophisticated (that's what the top hat and monocle is suppose to represent, but people just say it looks weird, too bad for them that the real fact of the matter is that their face looks weird). I got a very generous serving of Feijoada with sides of beans, salad thing, flower grains, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. It was very good and filling. It was like a warm hug in my stomach that resolved all the conflict, civil strife, and other stomach political issues that were important to the stomach constituents. The food combined with great service combined with a nice outdoor seating with a pleasant view = five stars. I'm no science major but I'm pretty sure that equates, THEROMODYNAMICS!!
(5)Andy L.
First impression; the freshest tasting food you will ever eat outside of a farm. If all Brazilian food is like this then I've definitely become a fan. A nice cozy little shop perfect for a lunch date being situated in Oakland's Historical Park. On a nice summer or spring day, you can't get much better than this in Oakland.
(5)Karin R.
This place was fantastic. Worth WAY more than 8 bucks per dish. I got the tostada salad, the manager even came by and offered me more cilantro dressing which was lovely. The presentation was gorgeous, it was a huge portion, and the service was fantastic. Personable, conversational, the manager took his time to make sure I was ordering the dish I would love the best and that they would prepare it in the way I would love the best. Just an overall great experience in a restaurant that is just adorable. Great atmosphere.
(5)Ka C.
Great little spot in preservation park. They make good grilled chicken/shrimp kebabs and i like their lasagna. There's outdoor seating, to enjoy your lunch. Gets busy during lunch hours. Worth a visit!!
(4)Steve S.
This place is definitely one of the highlights of working in Pres Park! Friendly owner, fast service (for fresh food!) and a small but varied menu. Their sandwiches are creative and tasty, empanadas are awesome with a salad, coffee is well made and their one meat burger is decent too. Not bad prices either for good quality, fresh food and a great little spot to enjoy. worth a visit from the rest of downtown, come explore a new part of Oaktown... Just dont expect parking in the park during the day, plant on the street tho.
(4)Lisa B.
One of my favorite places to get lunch in downtown Oakland, the burritos and taco salads are delicious and the outdoor seating is beautiful... you can completely forget that you are in Oakland.
(5)Josh T.
We went around 1:30, and there were still a few folks there. The food was wonderful, and super fresh. They do Brazilian only Wednesdays, so we'll be back. Sucha nice place.
(5)Anna L.
Generous portions, good value - got very full for 10 bucks. Got the jerk chicken - a tad too spicy for me, but it was tasty and borderline manageable when consumed with the sides of rice and salad. Rice was mushy (too much water), but side salad with cilantro dressing was delectable!
(4)grey h.
Note: This review is Based entirely on What I ate, I would give the SERVICE 4 stars. "Feijoada-- The Brazilian national dish of pork chunks, sausage and beans stewed together and served with a side of rice, collard greens and coarse cassava flour (farofa)." This was honestly the grossest thing I have ever eaten. Perhaps I am biased because I don't like black beans, but it tasted like it had been stewing in a pot for days, and it was just salty, no real spice or flavor (and the only hot sauce they have is Tapatio). Perhaps next time I will try something else, I hear that the chicken skewer tastes great, just not very filling. There's only 4 tables inside this tiny cafe, so everyone else has to sit outside. It's a nice breeze that blows by so as long as it's not raining... The Guarana soda is excellent, but the Cashew juice, a tad on the interesting flavor side...
(2)Tee C.
Awesome place. The whole staff treated us like honored guests. They gave us great information about the food, chatted with us, and checked up on us frequently. They even gave us empanadas on the house. And did I say the food is delicious. We had jerk chicken, fish tacos and a seasonal special dish from Brazil.
(5)Christina S.
Definitely a beautiful place to eat, especially if you want a spot of sun (but be prepared to compete for it). Food was good but didn't meet expectations - maybe I ordered the wrong thing; maybe my expectations were too high given reviews here; maybe I'm spoiled because I've had too many yummy tri-tip sandwiches at the Brazil Cafe in Berkeley. At any rate, the servings were huge. I had the jerk chicken and thought it was dry. My friend had the feijoada (black bean stew) - that definitely had more flavor. We were both in a food coma afterwards.
(3)Justine H.
By far, Rio California is one of the best spots to have lunch in the area. The location is splendid: in the middle of Preservation Park, by a fountain and in an old victorian. They have tables outside, so grab one if it's a nice day. The service is low key (you get your own cutlery, etc.) but that always makes me feel like I'm at home. If you need a little recharge after a grueling morning at work, try Rio for lunch. You'll feel like you took a mini-vacay from downtown Oakland. The food is good, too. They usually have daily specials that are great. They focus on Brazillian cuisine, but throw in some Mexican, Italian and down right Californian dishes to round out the menu. I love, love, love their salad dressing--creamy in a non-dairy sorta way (I think they use avocado for that effect, but I might be wrong) and really flavorful. However, a word of the wise: if you have either a meeting or a date or a potential date or a potential meeting after lunch, then stay away from the salad dressing. It will haunt you for hours!
(5)Kim N.
I had a salad on a sunny day on the patio. It was good and the sun was better. The patio was the perfect place for our business meeting because we could spread out. I would go back.
(4)Daniel B.
Nestled into the lovely environs of Preservation Park, the outdoor patio is one of the most pleasant places to eat lunch in Downtown Oakland. It is so quiet and peaceful here, it is really hard to believe that the dull roar of the 980 is just a block away. I stumbled upon this place while strolling through the park a few months back and vowed to go back once the weather got good to take advantage of its excellent location. This place would be worth an occassional visit even if the food weren't any good. Fortunately, everything I've had on the menu has been pretty tasty. The sandwiches are light fresh and healthy, which is a rarity in Downtown Oakland. Not thrilling by any means, but does the trick and you actually feel good about yourself afterwards. More impressive is the Feijoada, Brasil's national dish, a heavy stew with all sorts of pig parts in a black bean sauce with sides of rice, collard greens and farina. This is Brasilian soul food, hearty and warming, perfect for a cold winter day. The only problem is that I only tend to go to Rio California on warm summer days. But it compared pretty favorably to the Feijoada I had while in Rio, and is the only local place I know of that serves the dish. Definitely worth a try, and the owner/operator is real friendly and eager to explain the ins and outs of the dish. Its never going to replace my insatiable desire to return to Rio de Janeiro, but in the meantime it will have to suffice.
(4)Brian J.
The Jerk chicken is incredible and so moist. The burrito with jerk chicken is also excellent, very filling, and includes rice and beans inside the burrito and lots of sour cream and cheese. You won't leave hungry! Many people have now discovered this great little place set in a quiet corner of Preservation Park so it can get busy at lunch. The place has a nice deck with outdoor seating surrounded by trees and makes a perfect outdoor lunch spot on a nice day.
(4)Abby S.
This place is amazing! It's like a little Oasis in the middle of downtown Oakland. The Brazilian owner is incredibly nice and helpful, and the food was great - you get a ton for the price! Will definitely be coming back here for lunches when I need to escape.
(5)Troy N.
This is by far the best place I've found in Oakland. I've had a half dozen different dishes here and they've all been amazing. Everyone I've taken has also agreed. Their cilantro salad dressing needs to be bottled and sold. Not to mention the owner has personally made an appearance to check on how the order went everytime I have ever been there.
(5)L G.
I love this place so much! Great cilantro dressing! Such friendly people. Always remembers my order!
(5)Joanne T.
Wow, this is really tucked away, but I just came back from lunch, and I really liked it! The house cilantro garlic salad dressing is nice and fresh. The service is friendly. There's a nice patio seating area. In terms of downtown oakland, I would say, this is a winner.
(4)Wendy L.
Good value for lunch. I got the chicken tostada salad, not the healthiest salad, but very hearty. The salad is gigantic and filling. Not too bad for $7. There is limited seating but the tables outside are perfect for a nice, sunny East Bay day...
(4)Jonathan U.
I can't believe I've never been to this place before. What a find, thank you Yelp!!! In fact, I'm born and raised in Oakland and I've never even been to Preservation Way. This is a cute little cafe with a nice patio and really good Feijoada. I didn't try anything else, but my co worker got a HUGE salad and she seemed very happy about it. I will definitely be back... probably next Wednesday.
(5)Elisabeth P.
Every time I go to Rio I'm disappointed in some way. Yesterday they were out of empanadas. I think they're out of empanadas each time I ask. When I ordered lasagna the first time I went, I got about one part lasagna and three parts salad, which is kinda cheap if you ask me. They should call it "salad, with a child's portion of lasagna for $6.95." And the bread was sliced wheat bread, not baguette. I can go to Safeway and get my own sliced wheat bread, but I would never pair it with lasagna. That's just bananas. I'm really not a food snob; I eat food off the floor. I eat food that's been left out overnight! Yesterday I asked if they had bread (which I should have known from the lasagna debacle) and all they had were bagels. Maybe I'm overlooking a key factor about this place (or about myself) that would lower my expectations, and if that's the case, someone please enlighten me. I do want to give this place another chance, but there's always something just a little irritating about my experience there. Oh, and no credit card for purchases under $5. Come on! I realize that small businesses struggle and that they are gouged by credit card companies so they have to recoup their expenses somehow, but understanding and accepting are not the same thing. Maybe they need someone to help them with their strategic planning or something. Maybe if they had a better selection of snacks it would be easier to spend that $5.

I work in the City Center and had seen this place on the Yelp map, and am so glad I finally made my way over there. It's located in Preservation Park in a small renovated house. The guy who took our order was super friendly and helpful in picking out some good dishes since it was our first time there. He kept apologizing for the wait and said that usually they weren't that busy on Fridays, but I thought the wait was completely appropriate for a spot near downtown at noon. We ordered the jerk chicken and tilapia and both were absolutely DELICIOUS! Both came with a side salad and rice which were also excellent. The salad had a nice light, but flavorful dressing that I found myself mopping up off the plate. I didn't leave one morsel on my plate and that is unusual for me since I'm usually a light eater. We ate in the restaurant, but I saw a lot of people taking it to go. The service was excellent as well. The guy (I think he might be the owner) checked in on us a few times and we also spent some time after we ate chatting about the other dishes on the menu. I think next time I will try the empanadas - they looked awesome!
(5)brassica b.
This is a good place for a quick, pleasant lunch when you find yourself near Preservation Park on a weekday afternoon. I usually stick with the empanadas which are hearty and spicy and they come with a handful of mixed greens topped with a light cilantro dressing. The owner is the friendly dude in glasses who tries to converse with everyone in the place. You can get a decent lunch for one for under ten bucks. Coffee's bland though.
(3)Dorie P.
Ok, the cafe is kinda scrunched, and my coworkers didn't want to eat outside (Boo!) but very very yummy! Biggest chicken burrito (plus salad and chips with fruity salsa) for $6.95 ever! Amazing setting . . . on a clear spring day (Gawd, California rocks! I hear the East Coast is having a blizzard or some craziness) in Preservation Park, a great break from the daily grind.
(4)WENDIE S.
California Rio is one of the best restaurant here in Oakland, Can you imagine living here for over 30 yrs and never even heard of this restaurant. My cousin works in the state building and highly recommend this place so we went there for lunch. The setting was in Preservation Park...once you walk in....it was WOW! for me. The owner was very personable, sweet, talkative, and friendly. I had the seafood risotto with a side salad of cilantro dressing....WOW! the food was so good...portion is just right, and waiters was constanly walking around to make sure your cup was filled with water. Also, I had taken a togo order for my boyfriend. I had ordered him a Brazilian sausage with black beans and bacon collard greens......oh my gosh! It was more than delicious...I can't even describe the mouth watering plate & neither can my boyfriend. I will try to go to this restaurant at least once a week. I heard the jerk chicken was great..... but honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order...Again, awesome, price is right, great service, and a fabulous owner. This place is as good as it gets. Definetely five stars.
(5)Farah S.
The cauliflower soup is like potato soup, but not. Perfectly seasoned. Sublime!
(4)Diana C.
Go here on a Wednesday and get the Feijoada (bean, meat, and sausage stew, served with rice and greens). It's the best item on the menu, and only served once a week. Even though it's heavy, I don't know where else to get this dish, and it's not like you can order it every day, so I would be willing to deal with the food coma once a week. The sandwiches are decent and the location in Preservation Park makes this a nice weekday lunch getaway.
(4)Jordan M.
If you combine the excellent prices, very friendly service and good, fresh food, you can't go wrong with this easy weekday stop. With my new job in West Oakland, I'm trying to find quick and easy places to get a somewhat healthy lunch. This is definitely the spot.
(5)rajan a.
Great lunch spot . I've had the empanadas, fish of the day, and a couple of the sandwiches here, and it's always been quite tasty. I've also tried a few bites of other folks salads, and they are good. They're in the middle of Preservation Park (so finding it can be difficult), and have patio seating, which is rather nice. The owner works the register and is friendly, although rather brisk. Portions are medium-sized. It can be crowded during the lunch hour.
(4)Andrew N.
Proof that not all great cafes are only in SF. I had the Chicken Empanada. Every bite was delicious. I also really liked the mixed greens, shredded carrots and diced tomatoes and onions that it came with. Everything was fresh, nothing frozen. Friendly staff and the outdoor seating was perfect for a spring day.
(5)Shelley S.
Love the food! Love the atmosphere! This place is really good for lunch. It really quiet even when it's busy. Definitely better to sit outside on a nice day if you can. So far I've tried the spinach empanada and the chicken tostada which will probably be my new favorite. The owner is really cool. Even though it stays pretty busy you feel you get a real sense of reprisal from the work day and it feel like a real break.
(5)David R.
Pretty place, good service, but boring food.

Perfect. The Brazilian inspired food was just as tasty as it was served quickly. Service was impeccable and friendly. The outdoor seating faces the beautifully landscaped courtyard inside Preservation Park. Walking through Preservation Park is like being transported back to a charming little "Main Street" of yesteryear. Bonus: The owner, or at least I think he is the owner, is very cute and amicable. Echoing the sentiments of another reviewer, "A gem, within a gem (Preservation Park), within a gem, (Oakland)!

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!!!! Took my Mom to lunch yesterday. She works by Hegenberger so we usually look near my office in downtown Oakland for lunch. We both wanted something new, so turned to YELP. The reviews made this place seem like the right spot...and it was. My Mom loved the Victorians and the park atmosphere. We had lunch on the patio which was perfect for the sunny day. She had a Samba sandwhich, which I believe is ham and pineapple. It was huge so half went home for dinner. I had the grilled tilapia with capers. It was really good, and the salad & dressing were good. The person at the counter, I believe the owner, was very nice on the phone when I asked for directions. And upon arrival very inviting and greeted us and showed us how the place works, order cafeteria style, grab your napkins and utensils on your way, and they deliver, you save by helping your self. I will certainly take others there, its such a breath of fresh air during the work day, and away from the clatter and crowds, yet so close.

Beautiful empanadas. Beef, peas, raisins, sweet onions, egg! In a toasty egg-white-shellacked crust. Comes with a tomato-olive oil salsa, and a tangy dressing on your basic greens. Their roasted pork is also fork-tender. I'd lunch there often if parking were easier.
(4)Jill k.
a true hidden gem, tucked inside another hidden gem (preservation park) tucked inside another hidden gem (oakland!) the food here, which is brazillian-inspired, is fresh, and delicious; i especially enjoy their empanadas. the outside patio and super friendly service only make it better!
(5)michelle b.
yummy yum! :-) if you're in the mood for a fresh, light, yet filling meal this is a wonderful spot. it's in the heart of preservation park, a delightful place to have lunch in the sun while in downtown oakland. so far, everything i've had has been good...
(5)Steve S.
it's really hard not to order the jerk chicken. but i finally did it. the grilled tilapia was an excellent departure. fantastic food. outdoor seating. slightly off the beaten path of downtown. what a gem.
(5)M R.
yum...you can't go wrong w/ the portions, reasonable $ & food selection at p. park. nice owner (too bad not open on wknds) & speedy service tops it off. makes you want to head to brasil. obrigada rio california.

I'm not one to write reviews, but as an East Bay foodie, I've got to say, this is my #1 favorite spot in the Bay. The Jerk Chicken Burrito is something special-- incredibly tasty, huge, perfectly cooked, reasonably priced. The proprietor is Rio is something special too-- he greats everyone warmly and always makes sure you have everything you want/need. He checks every table often and loves teaching you about this history of a dish/how it's traditionally eaten. The environment is fantastic and service is super quick. Rio is definitely a 15 out of 10!

This place is the real deal straight bang for your buck, comfort food served with love in record times!!! Finally crossed their jerk chicken and croquettes (chicken) off my bucket list and it was bomb!!!! For the volume they do I was impressed how fast our food came out. The side salad the meals come with is generous and the dressing is so yummy!!! I'm writing this review drooling and thinking I'll take the hubs their this week for lunch!!! The jerk chicken was marinated as if I was in Jamaica and so tender it melts in your mouth!! What a hidden gem with reasonable prices!!!! Oh and portions are huge so prepare to take some home for later to indulge in!!

Rio California is my new favorite comfort food restaurant. Great hospitality and even better food, I'd come here every day. 5/5 service - owner is so charming and funny, comes by to check on everything 4.5/5 food - the chicken croquette was mindblowing, the jerk chicken was a little overwhelming 4/5 ambiance - loved the outside patio, but the inside is a little cramped and not as lovely. Located in a very charming neighborhood-esque plaza, the restaurant appears to be part of a larger Victorian-esque house. The owner (I presume) is super friendly and gave great suggestions on dishes to try. He often stopped by outside to not only check on how everyone was doing, but to even bus the dishes himself. A very generous person, he even offered to add on some beans free of charge! I ordered the chicken croquette, which was completely, ridiculously mindblowing. About the size/shape of a pear, the outside texture was crunchy and well seasoned, giving way to a buttery, soft layer of mashed potatoes. The chicken at the center was well seasoned and not even the least bit overly dry. I have no idea how they did this, but I'm not gonna question it because it was amazing.
(4)Judy T.
Don't know how "Brazilian" this place is, but the location is very charming and the jerk chicken dish is amazing. I've ventured out to other dishes, but I keep coming back to the jerk chicken. I wish Rio California was open all the time.

Been here a bunch of times for the Jerk chicken lunch special. Want to take a photo every time but it eat all too fast. The chicken is delicious and the cilantro lime salad dressing is bomb!! This place is a little oasis in downtown Oakland and is in a place I didn't even realize existed -- preservation park. Definitely a fun break from the craziness of downtown, I would go here more often if I could.
(5)Zain M.
My favorite spot in Oakland--I'm a regular here. The jerk chicken dish here is incredible (don't forget to ask for hot sauce). The chicken is marinated to perfection and is cooked perfectly every time. Great location and solid portions to boot. Ney (the owner) is very friendly and gives you the run down of the menu the first time you go there. If you haven't tried this gem yet--it's a must.
(5)Sonya Z.
Obsessed with this place, wish they were open all the time, but kind of love that they're not. It makes it seem more like just a passion project. What makes Rio so amazing? -The totally charming Preservation Park location -The mindblowingly nice and genuine owner, Nay (sp?) -The huge portions of fresh, delicious food made in RECORD time -The huge portions of fresh delicious food for as little as $10 (for jerk chicken + rice + salad + scrumptious gravy + scrumptious salad dressing) This is literally a *perfect* lunch spot. Well done, Rio California.

My coworkers chose this place before going to the airport. Since I was driving, I went where they told me to. The restaurant was located in a gated area known as Preservation Park and we actually passed it while driving there. We parked a block away at a metered street parking and walked over. There was a group of people who finished eating as we arrived so there was nobody else in the restaurant. It was really small and there was a chalkboard on the left side of the wall with some of the menu as well as paper above the cash register. We were in a little rush because of the parking meter and our flight at the Oakland airport. I ordered the Jerk Chicken Burrito ($8.95) because the guy that worked there preferred it over the Jerk Chicken plate due to the extra ingredients in the burrito. It sounded good so I was looking forward to it. The food came out fairly quickly and were brought to our table. The Jerk Chicken Burrito was HUGE! I enjoyed the Jerk Chicken Burrito and there was a lot of flavor in it. The chicken was cooked and tasted good to me. Besides the burrito was the chips and salsa as well as a salad. The chips were okay but the salsa was good. The salad was not bad as well. For $8.95, the Jerk Chicken Burrito was definitely a lot of bang for my buck. I didn't finish everything because we were in a rush to go to the airport but the burrito filled me up. If we were not in a rush then I definitely would have finished everything. Great small restaurant with great food. I recommend checking it out!

Bright Airy Lunch Place - just sort of out of the way. Note: the resturant actually opens at 10 or 10:30...could not remember exactly what the sign says. I ordered the Coxinha (Chicken Croquette) plate..it comes with a salad with a yummy cilantro cream dressing. $9.95. You get 3 plum size croquettes...deep fried to a crusty golden brown. Crack the shell and you are rewarded with shredded chicken and a bit of corn surrounded by potato. Mouth is watering just thinking about it again. My friend James ordered the Jerk Chicken Plate ($9.45). It comes with a large amount of white rice and a salad. He was gracious enough to give me a piece. The chicken has a bit of heat,,but it is Jerk Chicken...but what really surprised me was just how tender and moist the chicken was. Rio California is located in a Victorian Style house in a little gated square community called Preservation Park in the shadow of the Federal Building.
(5)Allen C.
I had no idea this place existed for a long time because it's tucked away inside a park filled with Victorian houses. Not exactly a place I would go to or a place I would expect to find a great restaurant. I really liked the coxinhas, which are croquettes with shredded chicken. An order of them comes with three, as well as a large serving of salad with cilantro dressing. The outside is a thin crispy layer, followed by a layer of potato before you get to the chicken. The sauce they provide goes great with it. The other popular dish here is the jerk chicken, which also comes with the large serving of salad. The chicken itself is really flavorful and tender - it's really easy to pull the meat apart. Alternatively, you could get a jerk chicken burrito, but that thing is massive. A few of my coworkers have tried it and could not finish it. They take card, but it's best if you pay in cash because their machine takes forever to process a credit card. But the guy taking the orders is pretty good with keeping track of cards and he tries to be efficient with everyone else in line while your card is processing. The interior doesn't have many tables, but there are a few small tables on the porch outside. Many people just sit outside on the lawn or by the fountain too. Either way, you'll enjoy the experience at this place with great food and a great atmosphere.
(5)Noel A.
I ordered a jerk chicken burrito and it was very delicious. It was a huge burrito with a nice side salad and chips. The salsa was tasty with a bit of spice but not too spicy.
(5)Cole D.
Great food, quick service, and a beautiful location. The Jerk Chicken is not so much spicy, but flavorful. Good portion sizes too. Not being from the area, I had a hard time finding the location in Preservation Park initially (mapping software doesn't do well in there). It was a shame I couldn't stay to eat in Preservation Park - what a beautiful area.
(5)Paul K.
In beautiful Preservation Park this local eatery provides comforting and flavorful food at very reasonable prices. So far the jerk chicken and seafood risotto have all been winners. Nice people and an escape from the hustle of downtown.
(5)V C.
I was blown away by their amazing jerk chicken! Chicken was juicy and tender. The cilantro dressing on the salad was da bomb. Loved the coxinhas....full of flavor, just all around delicious. Enjoyed a relaxing meal on the outside tables. Didn't want to go back to work. :)
(5)Holly H.
The jerk chicken was tender, moist, really flavorful and a HUGE portion! I shared it with a friend and we were both pretty full. The salad dressing is really good too. Great spot.

The six of us from the office decided to go out for lunch on this gorgeous day. Our co-worker suggested a nice Brazilian restaurant at nearby Preservation Park. Strolling through the peaceful and beautiful park of elegantly restored Victorian buildings, Rio California is located on the first floor in one of the buildings. Entering the restaurant, the gentleman at the register was warm and welcoming. He described some of the regular and special menu items that were listed in the overhead menu board. You place and pay for your order, grab your utensils and find an open table. We wanted to sit in the patio, which consisted about 12 tables, but on this beautiful day, other patrons had the similar idea. So we sat inside, which can accommodate about 16 people with its 7 tables. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/rio-… ) I ordered the fish tacos with a salad and pico de gallo. The order consisted of three soft shelled tacos with a grilled piece of fish over a mixture of beans, corn and a mild salsa sauce and topped by a piece of avocado with a strip of sour cream. The fish was moist and was tasty. The mixed green salad was topped with a cilantro dressing. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/rio-… ) Another great lunch time option for me to consider. I will be back to try some of the other offerings on the menu. Reasonable prices, tasty food, and fast friendly service. A gem inside the beautiful Preservation Park.

One of my favorite restaurants in Oakland/East Bay. Food is delicious, fresh, flavorful, consistent and all around very well made. Service is very efficient and friendly, food comes out very quickly. Value is among the best; huge plate of food for 10/11 dollars. Outdoor patio is beautiful, peaceful. The owner is Brazilian; he's there every day and ensures the quality of the food and restaurant are amazing. Delicious, great value, fast, classy, great location... As good as it gets.
(5)James H.
This is my go to lunch spot in Oakland when I'm not sure where to eat. Jerk chicken is delish here and it comes with a side salad and rice. The portions are very generous and I don't know what they pit in the salad dressing but it's awesome. The owner behind the counter is always friendly and has a smile on his face to greet the customers! Come by and check it out! You won't be disappointed!
(5)Dina L.
Real spicy jerk chicken y'all. These thighs are spicy and tender and go so well with the cilantro dressing, which is light yet flavorful. I was in love at first bite. The tacos were amazing fresh fish with a light batter, avocado with beans, corn and beans. The herb chicken kebab were delish with beans on the side. Sitting on the porch, in the dappled sunlight, was so lovely. Hardly notice the highway. Preservation Hall rocks and so first Rio California
(5)Addison P.
Not bad! Very unique. Great atmosphere and location. I asked the cashier how long they've been here and he said 16 years!!! I was like wow how have I never heard of this place. He said we try to keep it a secret and went into how many customers per hour etc... Maybe he thought I was a hipster and would tell how my hipster friends that this place is a secret. Too bad I'm neither a hipster nor do I have friends which is why I yelp. At any rate, I ordered the jerk chicken burrito. It was good but plain. The salad and chips were good compliments since the burrito only has sour cream, beans, rice and of course chicken. There's a side of pick de gallo which is where all the spicyness comes from. I normally associate jerk chicken with heat but this wasn't the case at all.
(4)Unkle R.
This place is in the cuts and hard to find for most people. But the food is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! I love to get their jerk chicken with rice, salad, and I always ask for beans to go with it. I have had lots of different menu items from this place, and haven't had a bad experience yet. The owner is always very accommodating and he usually walks around (once the crowd dies down a little) and asks how everything is, if anything needs improvement. I only wish there were more places like this to go eat. TOP NOTCH!!
(5)Robert H.
This place hits the spot! I grew up in the Caribbean, and that jerk chicken plate and/or burrito is absolutely incredible! It's the juiciest, most well seasoned chicken I've had in a long time. Unfortunately I work in SF so I can only get it when I work from home in Oakland. Amazing food, amazing prices, and the owner is so friendly! Highly recommend this place!
(5)jon R.
We're talking lunch here, so gauge the five stars accordingly. This place serves delicious, interesting food, quickly in a lovely environment. A real find!
(5)David L.
The fish tacos and chicken croquettes were both fantastic with great flavors and value. The side salad was almost big enough for a meal on its own. Great outdoor setting, really good food, and reasonable prices.
(5)Chris M.
Thrice I've been here, and thrice I've left happy... yes, happy! Rio California is definitely my favorite place to eat for lunch in downtown Oakland. Located in the peaceful Preservation Park, this place may be hard to find, but once you see your food, it's worth the journey. Their jerk chicken burrito tastes as good as it sounds. When I pulled my to-go box off the counter, I nearly dropped it because I didn't expect it to be so heavy. Pair that burrito with a fresh, crunchy salad - you get a very satisfied customer. I've also ordered the chicken coxinha , which is a croquette filled with shredded chicken. The croquettes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, while the chicken had just the right amount of sweetness. It comes with a side of salad and a fairly spicy chili sauce. If you see this available on the specials, I advise you order it immediately! Lastly, my most recent order was the freijoada - sausage and pork chunks in soupy black beans with a side of rice, salad with pork, and what I assume is a finely crumbled sugar cookie? I thourghoughly enjoyed it, but I'd much rather have a jerk chicken burrito or coxinha. Upon receiving the freijoada (take out), the owner strongly stressed that I should not swing the bag around to prevent me from spilling any sauce. It's refreshing when people at an establishment actually care that you enjoy your food! Rio California is fast with the food, friendly with their customers, and great to the last bite.
(5)John D.
The food tastes very fresh and flavorful. It's a little pricey than some other options available in the area, but it's worth it. The portions and quality of food will leave you feeling very satisfied and not too heavy. If you sit at the outdoor seating, you seem to forget you're in the middle of Downtown Oakland. It's a refreshing lunch spot.
(5)Amber S.
TGFY (thank goodness for Yelp) otherwise I might have missed out on this lunch oasis. Keep your eyes open during the short stroll through Preservation Park and you will find Rio CA. As soon as we stepped in the owner welcomed and let us know the daily lunch specials and the regular menu available. Hubs and I ordered the fish tacos ($9.98) and jerk chicken ($8.98) the total was $20.60. Order, pay, find a table (indoor or outdoor) grab some silverware and condiments within minutes the food will arrive. Hubs and I enjoyed both entrees. The salad had a really delicious cilantro type dressing (they were very generous so next time I will ask for it on the side) The 3 tacos had grilled white fish, pinto beans, corn, slice of avocado (I asked for no sour cream) and salsa inside the corn tortilla. We both really enjoyed the jerk chicken and rice. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, it was tender and juicy, the rice was moist with some of the seasoning on top. It was the best of the 2 entrees. The place is pretty popular. There was a constant stream of hungry patrons. Mostly regulars ordering the jerk chicken. Place is clean, has great affordable lunch entrees with friendly and fast service. Yep, I will be back.

First time trying Brazilian food and it was the most delicious and diverse spread of food I've had. Had their chicken jerk plate. I think the best thing about it was how the flavors of the chicken, rice, and salad did not compete with one another. Each had its own incredible taste, yet melded together so seamlessly. The chicken was cook perfectly--not at all dry and no pink. I also tried the beef empanada and the coxinhas. Those coxinhas were little deep fried bombs of spiced chicken wrapped in mashed potatoes. The chicken was a little on the dryer side, but I could see that if it were just slightly more wet, the whole thing would disintegrate. IMO the best thing we ordered The beef empanada was the least surprising--empanadas are not new to me--but still very tasty. Especially with the hot sauce that came with the coxinhas (so ask for some on the side). This place has also inspired me to travel to Brazil! And also inspired me to come back again and again. Big plus, the guy that ran the place is super nice!
(5)Victor G.
Rio California is to the center left of a bunch of Victorian houses. hanging sign in front gives away the location. eatery is just an ordering couter and 10ish tables. eats: jerk chicken w/ rice & salad(9.25) -2 large pieces of flavorful tender chicken. spiciness via black pepper. -moist rice, and exquisite salad, very fresh.. -fab value, 4.5 stars leftovers: -pricey? good value for the price. -food ready in minutes (premade, scoop and go) -seating area lacks ambience, functional -sammies 7ish, -only open weekdays, 8:30-3:00.
(5)David C.
Amazing authentic Brazilian flavors, with rotating specials. Highly recommend the jerk chicken as a standard, and the croquettes when they have the. Absolutely delicious food, seasoned to perfection. PROTIP: They are only open Mon - Fri, 8AM - 3PM. The location is in an old victorian house so it may be a little hard to find initially.
(5)Jeff P.
This place is a go to for both the afternoon lunch goer and the evening diner. The food has such great flavor and the portion for the price is perfect. A must try. Get the jerk chicken burrito!!
(5)Sorin N.
Awesome little hidden spot in Preservation Park. Service was fast, the owner is cool and chatty, and the food was very good, huge portions and reasonably priced.
(5)Tim H.
A hidden gem. The owner was very gracious and hard working/on his game. You can't get a better deal for the price either. I ordered the "Jerk Chicken" plate, which comes with two moist portions of chicken, a scoop of rice and a salad with a wonderful cilantro dressing. If you're reading this review then you're looking for good food. No need to read any further (basically all other reviews of this place will say the same), go to Rio! You won't be disappointed. I'm from LA but wish this place was just around the corner from me. If I end up living in Oakland then it will be a go-to most definitely.
(5)Aaron L.
GREAT EXPERIENCE! The owner was very nice, explaining the dishes, checking on all patrons while we were eating and making everyone feel welcome. I ordered the jerk chicken which was very moist and tasty. I would definitely return.
(5)Paul L.
Dear Rio, You are a Local Hidden Gem in all definition of the word.. or words.. or whatever. In the middle of urban dirty Oakland, lies an oasis, a little gated area with beautiful townhomes, trees, a little walkway with benches. It's like you stepped into a different world. Amidst this oasis is a little restaurant, that is you. Tried your Spicy Jerk Chicken like most, and it was pretty good. Not too dry, a little bit of kick. One day I may try your other offerings, but I don't know how I am going to get myself to not order your main special! Definitely worth a visit at least once especially if you like to check out unique places. Take advantage of the outdoor seating on a nice sunny day. It really feels like you just stepped into a new place. Note that they close at 3PM! so it's not a dinner place!
(3)Sally K.
Best kept secret in Oakland. Located in peaceful Preservation Park right next to the fountain, this is a great place for a lunch break in the middle of a busy work day. The Jerk Chicken is the best! The service is friendly and welcoming.
(5)Keith T.
First time at a Brazilian spot but I'm definitely an exotic eater. This place hands down deserves 5 stars for numerous reasons 1) the food was amazing !!!!! Jerk chicken was 10 dollars but it is really huge . It comes with a big side salad and two chicken breasts. Chicken was juicy , moist , flavorful and it comes with a sauce that just puts it all together . 2) price was reasonable and they offer lots of items I the menu which are very cheap as well . You also pay at the counter so no tip necessary . 3) owner is hands down the best . He takes care of the customers and asks customers if they need anything . He even provided me a sauce which I didn't ask for but was very very good
(5)Cindy C.
The owner is so nice and patient! I really like how simple this place is and so chill! I really enjoyed that green cilantro dressing on the salad and the meals are extremely filling and affordable! The food was not oily or greasy!! I will definitely be back again! By the way...the menu changes everyday!
(5)Jane H.
I've tried the fajita burritos (HUGE) and meat lasagna here and both were really good! The owner is very friendly and it's located in Preservation Park which is quite pretty.
(5)Andrew C.
Again no Feijoada so I got the 3 fish taco plate ($9.95) which comes with a small ramekin of fresh salsa and a side salad ( yelp.com/biz_photos/rio-… ). The tacos are an elaborate affair built on a bed of pinto beans, corn, tomatoes, a bit of hot sauce, some shredded lettuce, then a small tilapia filet, and finally topped with an avocado slice and dollop of sour cream ( yelp.com/biz_photos/rio-… ). The fish is lightly floured and sauteed in a meunière type preparation ( yelp.com/biz_photos/rio-… ) and was moist and flakey. The taco as a whole was mildly spicy and I enjoyed the combination of all the elements. The salad was pretty good size with mostly lettuce, some shredded carrots, and a piece of tomato and cucumber. Mostly good with a couple of browning edges on the lettuce. I'm surprisingly OK with the creamy cilantro salad dressing they use here. I need to find out when they have Coxinha or Feijoada.
(4)Heather S.
I can't say enough about this place. If I could I'd give it higher than 5 starts. The location is awesome, the food is delicious and the service is excellent. I had the Jerk Chicken Burrito for less than $10 and it came with a delicious salad. It was definitely enough food for 2 people or 2 meals. Everything else on the menu looks great too. I can't wait to go again!
(5)Sara K.
I had the Jerk Chicken Plate and it was amazing. Spicy but i could still taste my food. The staff was friendly and made me feel comfortable! Lots of food for 10 dollars!
(5)Marilia L.
Hands down best a la carte Brazilian restaurant in the Bay Area! Adorable little spot in Oakland, fast service, the owner is super nice the feijoada tastes like heaven! Coxinhas are perfect! The jerk chicken is amazing! Authentic Brazilian cuisine! And I'm Brazilian so I know what I'm talking!!
(5)Allisyn R.
The chicken skewers were AMAZING. The dressing used for the side salads was unique and delicious.
(4)James S.
Hole in the wall. I ran into this place by mistake while walking through preservation park in oakland. Saw a group of people standing in line and I was curious to know what they were waiting for. Come find out, it was a Brazilian restaurant. Small but loved the food. Well worth $10 a plate for their great food selection. The man at the counter was really nice as well. He helped me with my food selection process. Rating Food: 4.5 Price: 4 Service: 4 Overall: 4.5 Love it. Will be coming back to this often.
(4)Arthur Y.
Total oasis in Oakland. Yes it's cliche, but seriously Preservation park seems like a oasis if anything does. Owners are truly friendly people - who profusely apologized to me for not checking in to see how everything was after we got our food. Everything was fine. Is the food the greatest thing ever? No, but it's solid and reasonably priced. Got the jerk chicken burrito with salad for $8. The burrito was the size of a small baby. The chicken was flavorful, and the salad was fresh and nicely dressed. But it's SUCH a nice environment on that patio....that alone makes it worth the trip. The empandas are the bomb too.
(5)Danny H.
This place deserves all the 5 star ratings. It's located in a really cute little place, and you can take your lunch outside to eat on the porch, almost as if you were at home. Except that at home, you wouldn't be able to enjoy the awesome jerk chicken they make here because, let's be honest, you couldn't make that at home. I've tried a few other dishes here, but it really is the jerk chicken plate that continues to be most satisfying. The chicken is well-cooked and just the right level of spicy, and it works really well with the rice and the awesome side salad with cilantro dressing. The owner here is really nice, although he seems to greatly prefer cash to card. Which is fine, although they should probably get a faster card reader. Either way, the service is still friendly and fast.
(5)Ginger W.
Ive been in Oakland for a month and this is without a doubt the best restaurant here. I've ate lunch here three times. Ive had the jerk chicken and the seafood risotto. Its amazing food. The service is great. You need to bus your own table an get your own utensils but thats ok. They do come out an check on you to see if you need anything. They are located in the beautiful preservation patk. Its so nice to eat outside. My only complaint.....they are not open for dinner!
(5)Krystal O.
My goooodness. 5 stars to the MAX. Came here for lunch with some coworkers and a coworker and I ordered the grilled tilapia and the jerk chicken plates to share. The food comes with rice and a side salad as well. When the food came out.. it looked soo delish! And YES it also tasted delish. The chicken was nicely spiced and the tilapia had a really tasty sauce on top of it. I don't really have any words to explain how good it was but.. I would DEFINITELY come here again and recommend this to anyone. It's also in a cute little gated community type.. so you get to sit outside and enjoy your lunch if you choose to.
(5)Howard T.
This place is off preservation parkway and 12th. Just follow the street in until you reach the turn. It will be off to the left. The croquettes and the jerk chicken were delicious and well cooked. I hate to overuse amazing... but they were just that. Service was excellent and the guy at the front was extremely friendly. It's too bad they're only open from 8-3
(5)Mark S.
I felt like I was on vacation in Key West but it was just my lunch break. So lovely to sit outside by the fountain. I can't wait to go back.
(4)Mcee B.
This spot never fails. Been here quite a few time and the owner is quite friendly and remember us by names. Appreciate the homely bussiness here.
(5)Yevette C.
The reviews for this place made me check it...... Well... It's just meh. Rushed service . Seems like people love it. Not feeling the cilantro dressing like others. guess I like more acidic dressings . Anyway , might go back for lasagne . !
(2)Paul H.
It's been a looong time that I hadn't eaten a good feijoada with the Feeling to be in Brazil! Since today, not anymore. Food is good, place is nice. Whatelse do you need Oakland folks!
(5)Let's Go RAIDERS S.
I LOVE the fish plate. It is in an onion and caper sauce served with riced and salad. The jerk chicken and burrito I will PASS on. I have had jerk chicken MUCH BETTER other places. PASS on the jerk burrito and the fajita burrito too. I haven't had anything else there but if my co-workers must dine there and I go, then I will ONLY order the fish.
(2)Craig G.
On Jury Duty in downtown Oakland? This place is worth the short walk. I had perfectly-grilled tilapia with a nice, fresh salad and ideally-prepared rice, plus a yummy mango smoothy. All enjoyed in a casual yet adorable little place in a park I never knew existed. Oakland can be full of surprises that way. Like the samba arrangement of Ave Maria they had playing at Rio. What a delightful find. Thank, you Yelp.

Seeking something new to fill my belly, my girlfriend recommended that we give Rio California a try. She had recently been with her coworkers and was very impressed. Judging by the incredible reviews, she had good reason to be. Rio is located in a super cute area called Preservation Park, where old Victorian homes were moved and restored. It's like being in a whole different world, even though you're still very much in Oakland. I was excited to give their food a try. I ordered their chicken croquettes which was served with salad and salsa. It was served with three giant croquettes which wonderfully crispy and golden fried, which paired wonderfully with a bit of their hot sauce, salsa, and cilantro salad dressing. Flavors were fresh and bright, so uncharacteristic of the food just beyond the gates of the park. I absolutely loved the dish and the salad was great too. That cilantro dressing really needs to be bottled! The dining room is super cute and quaint, and the owner is outstandingly friendly. They've even got a cute patio outside where you can enjoy your food, but unfortunately no dogs are allowed in the park. Nevertheless, it makes me smile whenever I think of Rio California and it's such a breath of fresh air in the concrete jungle. Food: 9/10 Service: 10/10 Price: $ Atmosphere: 9/10

Service was fast and in a nice little part of Oakland, although you'll have to look closely to see the sign and find the restaurant. Jerk chicken plate was more than enough and very tasty, with a good level of spice.

Love this place for lunch. Out of the jerk chicken, fish tacos, the fejioda, and lasagne, I actually liked the lasagne the best. There's often a huge lunch crowd but the owner does his best to try to move things along as quickly as possible.

Another long over due review... This place is one of the best kept secrets in Oakland. Located inside preservation park, a business park of renovated Victorian buildings. You would never think that there was a cafe inside this here... not only is there a cafe, they also have indoor and outdoor seating. I've been here many times, most recently yesterday. In my opinion their jerk chicken is to die for!!!! (Tender, seasoned perfectly, served with a salad and the moistest rice) I can't remember having anything else, I always want to try something else... but jerk chicken comes out of my mouth when it's time to order. This place is owned and operated by Ney, ( I love supporting the little guys) he's from Brazil, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Give this place a try... you won't regret it!!!
(5)Cheryl M.
As most have stated, the jerk chicken is delicious and black pepper spicy...generous portions accompanied with flavorful rice and mouthwatering, cilantro dressing (and i don't even like cilantro!). Its that good. Service is wonderful...its self-serve but the owner checks on everyone on their orders. Surroundings take you to another place...located at Preservation Park...best place to sit is outside! Even though self service, be sure to tip these people generously as the food is wonderful, priced reasonably and super nice!
(4)Taz S.
Small place with hard to find seating, however, when it comes to food.... wow! Would really recommend the jerked chicken. Another really good dish is their fried potato dumpling which they only have a two days a week. Plates come with salad with a mint dressing that is amazing. This is a hidden gem in Oakland. The only thing I don't like is their hours of operation. They are only open weekdays during lunch.

Amazing, amazing, amazing!! I found this gem about a year ago and am in love. The owner is an amazing guy. Super nice with great service. His food though speaks for itself. I literally crave his coxhinas and you can't go there and not try the jerk chicken at least once. Like it spicy??Have him put extra gravy over the rice....mmmmm. Just can't say enough good stuff. Wish there were more locations because I LOVE IT!! Thanks Rio California!!!
(5)S K.
Food - amazing! Service - astounding! Price- affordable! We just had a little difficulty finding the place initially. Waze guided us to the entrance of the plaza, which looked like a private residential entrance.

I wanted to hire this place to cater a luncheon for Administrative Professional's Day April 22, 2015. I called the guy and was told that they do not answer calls about catering during the day but to send an e-mail and someone would get back to me. So, I sent an e-mail like they required and they didn't respond until 8:30 p.m. the following night with minimal info. I sent a follow-up e-mail asking specific information about how to place the order and how we will receive confirmation, etc. It's been 5 days - NO RESPONSE.... I'm sorry but I do not feel comfortable planning a luncheon with a restaurant without having consistent contact. It would be horrifying to have everybody sitting around wondering where's the food. Rio - you need to have a better catering procedure. Your refusal to answer basic questions about the process is ridiculous, especially with your limited hours and massive delays in responding....missed out on a good new catering customer.

I've been wanting to try this place out & had it bookmarked for a while before I made it. You go in, look at the various menus posted around the counter, order, & have a seat, & they'll bring you your food. Looks like various office workers in the area call in their order & pick it up to go. There's seating inside (not a very big space) & outside on the porch. So, they have feijoada, the national dish of Brazil, made with black beans, various meats (but no offal for those of you who aren't so adventurous). The owner is Brazilian, so they offer feijoada, empanadas, croquetes, & jerk chicken, in addition to the more mainstream sandwiches & salads. They also have some South American sodas/juices. Word of warning, though: they don't have all of the Brazilian specialties every day! I enjoyed the feijoada (never had it before)--it was savory, rich, tasty. Be sure to mix all the food on your plate...the rice, the stew, the manioc "grains." They are only open for lunch during the week, so I may never get a chance to go back again, unless I have the day off. We talked to the owner, & they do lunch catering in addition to lunch. We also found out that they used to be located in Alameda. I forget how long they've been at this location. All the parking nearby looked like it was metered, & there's a garage across MLK from Preservation Park. Located in Preservation Park, in one of the beautifully restored Victorians, in the block between MLK, Castro, 12th & 14th.

This is such a classy joint. The kind of place that's never gonna give you up. Never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert youuuuu. you'll miss this gemmmmaa if you don't yelp first. It's nestled in a nice "non-profit village" called Preservation Park, which has a fountain in the middle and a series of Victorian houses. All their food is amazing, and specials change pretty regularly. We've had their jerk chicken (classic), fish tacos, and their seafood risotto (full o' dem good seafood stuff). Each comes with a generous portion of super fresh salad with delicious green dressing. The owner is really friendly, and he has a gorgeous Portuguese accent. sit outside on a sunny day-- an oasis in downtown Oakland. Street-side parking outside of the gated area (or just a block away from 12th st bart). it's too bad it's not open for dinner or weekends, but I also secretly like that.
(5)Julie T.
I've been here a few times... it definitely has quick and nice customer service. You start your experience by ordering at the front booth, pay, then sit, and the food is brought out to you within minutes. The place can get crowded during the lunch hours (since it's smack dab in Downtown Oakland). It's situated in a cute little victorian house town near other local businesses and across the street from the Downtown condos with close proximity to Chinatown. There's indoor and outdoor seating - you'll enjoy the outside seating during the Summers. For the food, it was mediocre for me. I've tried a plethora of their main courses - chicken, fish, and salads. You can pick your sides of beans or salad, and if you want to replace your rice, you can do that as well. Sometimes, the side salad takes over the plate leaving the main course looking pretty sad. I'd definitely come back just for the atmosphere (outdoor area).
(3)Roxx P.
I must say after reading some of the positive reviews I decided to go with my siblings. All of the 3 different dishes were delicious. Great fresh taste. We will definitely be back and enjoy the out doors of downtown Oakland.
(4)Roehl A.
Good food and beautiful surrounding area! Decided on the jerk chicken. The flavor profile was excellent and on point. It came with a salad and a generous scoop of rice. What made the dish was the taste if the chicken contrasted with the simple yet effective presentation. The restaurant itself is in a beautiful and relaxing location. Visit if you are in the area.
(4)Amy C.
I can't say enough good things about Rio California. The food is amazing (in taste, price and portion size), the service is excellent and the restaurant is super cute. All the entrees are priced under $10 and come with a fresh salad with a delicious homemade cilantro dressing that is made fresh daily. I can't come here as often as I would like because of the hours, but everything that I have tried has been delicious. TIP: Make sure you try their homemade hot sauce as well. It is not too spicy, but extremely flavorful. It goes well with everything! Other than the limited hours, I really have no complaints about this wonderful little place. The two men who work there are super nice and friendly. The inside of the restaurant is bright and cheery and, on a nice day, dining outside is a like dining in little oasis in the middle of downtown Oakland.
(5)Casey M.
We come here at least once a week. Always get the jerk chicken, and it's always great. I wish they had later hours, but I guess if you're this great and know it, you can keep your hours short and know that the people will come. Kind of like crack dealers. Anyways, worth the trip downtown.
(5)Blake T.
Delicious food and amazing service. The owner remembered me by name today and I've only be there twice about 6 months ago. Great atmosphere. Best empanadas I've ever had and the jerk chicken is to die for.
(5)Zach W.
The service was excellent I had the fajita chicken burrito and my girlfriend had the jerk chicken burrito. I'm my opinion the jerk chicken was better. Only thing I would change is that I would like if they shredded the chicken more prior to them wrapping it up. My girlfriend found a piece of plastic I'm he burrito
(3)Nicole D.
Good food, great service. Owner is always friendly. Did I forget good food? Love the jerk chicken wrap. So good and plenty to fill you up (and then some).
(5)Ryan J.
I can sum this place up perfectly in two words: hidden gem. Want to sit outside on a beautiful day while enjoying delicious food? The jerk chicken is fantastic and comes as a hearty portion with a delicious salad and perfectly cooked rice. What more could you ask for! How about charging ridiculously expensive prices? Not here! Only thing that would make this place better is if they served beer, but you have downtown Oakland for that...
(5)Debvora W.
OMG!!!!!! I will definitely add this place to my favorites. I ordered the jerk chicken lunch special and I must say it was the best jerk chicken I have ever had! The salad with the cilantro dressing was amazing! I never ate a side salad so fast in my life and the rice.....wow! So good. The service was great as well. Its a small place and was not busy when I arrived. Parking was not an issue. Five stars because my lunch was delicious and I have leftovers :)
(5)Ace E.
Friendly service, beautiful patio, reasonably priced food, the fish tacos were amazing.
(5)Paulo R.
I hadn't been so surprisingly impressed for a very long time. The Jerk Chicken is simply delicious! I will certainly be back here and will be talking about this place to all my friends.
(5)Luis P.
Rio California has been one of the best dining experience I have had in a while. Delicious Fish Tacos, Lasagna and their very popular Jerk Chicken is something everybody must try. Their service is equivalent to dining at a 5 star restaurant, the Cashier and I'm assuming owner, Neigh ("like a horse"-his words), was always aware of our needs and the food came within minutes of ordering. He brought the food, napkins, and refilled my girlfriends and my water when it was low. He was also very friendly and polite. All in All, I will recommend this place to all my friends and internet strangers alike. 5 stars well earned.
(5)Reagan C.
Jerk chicken was great. The owner was really nice and checked to see if we were enjoying ourselves and the food. A little hard to find since it's in the park, but would definitely come back.
(5)Bob W.
Rio California has provided me with healthy, delicious lunch options since I moved to Oakland. The jerk chicken plate and the jerk chicken burrito- served with salad and chips- are both under 9 dollars for lunch: and there is a ton of food. The salad dressing is cilantro based and perfectly seasoned. Pay attention to the specials above the cash register. The feijoada is amazing if they have it! Outdoor seating and location are also big pluses.
(5)Chuck N.
Thursday, 1:30PM. Nestled in a cozy community in downtown Oakland. We aimed for a later time to grub to avoid lines. Local gem is not longer so hidden... Quickie: +Awesome service +Good food Constructive comments: * Actual ice for beverages * Handling foot traffic and the line And then...? Solid Brazilian option. ********** Stuffed my face with: 1. Jerk chicken plate +Adequate spice (those who like things really hot will need to ask fo' mo') +Full platter, yes!
(4)D B.
Niiice lunch spot. I had the turkey sandwich with the cranberry sauce & the girlfriend had chicken enchiladas. The food is really good and the cilantro dressing on the salad was a welcomed change.
(4)Ali B.
I had a delicious Bambino sandwich. It looked extremely ordinary when it came out, but it was far from ordinary. Let's start with the bread, it was toasty, grainy, and seedy! Perfect for a vegetarian. The pesto on the sandwich was amazing and the combination of tofu and sprouts was perfect! The sandwich was very filling and had a side salad. I cannot wait to come back to this place. So glad to have been introduced to it. The service is wonderful! GO HERE!
(5)Genevieve S.
Located within Preservation Park, Rio California offers a lovely setting for lunch. I order the Feijoada and my bf got the talapia. Mine consisted of lots of black beans, rice, and a breadcrumb/powder substance I wasn't sure what to do with. The side of chard with pork was yummy. The linguica was very good, but the pork in the black beans was pretty dry. This is apparently a traditional Brazilian dish, but it was new to me and came off as heavy and salty. The talapia was light and seasoned and cooked well. If I do return, I'd get the fish tacos. They looked good. Oh! We did have a chicken empanada before our meal and I really liked the thick, soft, egg-like breading.

Who would have known that a small restaurant can be sitting in a gated community in Oakland. The small restaurant's location and size has customers feeling more like friends getting together for a Sunday brunch. The cashier explains everything on the menu in a spark note fashion. Simple, clear, and direct to the point BUT NOT IN A RUDE WAY. He comforts you and gives you confidence to make you want to try everything. Good prices, good feel at home atmosphere. Nice hidden gem. Enjoy
(4)Linda T.
This has got to be the cutest hidden gem in Downtown Oakland. It's a small place, sort of hidden and tucked away in a gated community called Preservation Park. It's a great spot - surrounded my vintage houses and lots of palm trees. The perfect spot for brunch! The jerk chicken here was recommended by a friend who lived in Brazil. She swore that this was the only place she could find authentic Brazilian food. The place is small but there's seating outdoors. Service is superb, very attentive and friendly. The food? AMAZING. I've never had Brazilian food, so Rio definitely sets the bar. The jerk chicken is probably its best dish - portions are huge as well. The chicken was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. I couldn't get enough of the house-made cilantro sauce! I'm definitely coming back.
(5)Austin N.
I no longer work in the area, but I will truly miss this gem. FOOD: JERK CHICKEN. Hand's down the best I've had. Just note, if you don't like spicy foods, it may be worth it to mention to make it less spicy. If you enjoy large portions, this is also the place for you. Their regular salads look like they can feed a family. AMBIANCE: Small little indoor seating area, with an outdoor patio as well. It's very laid back and casual. Good place for a quick lunch with a colleague. SERVICE: The poeple who work here and great and I've never had a problem. If you dine in: simply order, sit down, and they'll bring you the food. They really only open for lunch, so careful coming around 12-1. This place gets seriously packed. My advice, order ahead. PARKING: All street, but I usally find parking within a 1-2 block radius. Overall: It's a must try and the area is beautiful.

This place is a gem in Oakland. The atmosphere is supurb, and the food is excellent. The only thing remotely negative is the inconsistent parking meters (carry quarters...), and that's not a fault with this place at all. That and probably their hours, but again can't really fault them. Other than that, the only thing to keep in mind is that they get packed around noon. Their jerk chicken anything is spectacular. It has just the right amount of kick to it. The salad is dressed with a chimichurri sauce that's very similar to what you get at Sliver. The entire meal just comes together so well. Worth trying, and worth coming back.
(5)Kitty T.
Ambiance and customer service excellent! Located in a historical home in a park setting. A gem! Street parking. Enjoyed my lunch at the patio with slight breeze. Had spinach empanada and salad with cilantro dressing and guava smoothie ! Free tea. Owner gave me helpful recommendations. Very flavorful. Not too salty or sweet! Just right! Will definitely return!
(5)Earlene C.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? Located in Preservation Park, Rio California feels like it should be on Sesame Street. Talk about a picturesque location. Nestled in busy Downtown Oakland. I had the jerk chicken - super yum! I'm not usually a huge fan of Jerk Chicken. I find it a dry and salty dish. Here at Rio Cali its succulent and juicy. Other items on the menu sound amazing. I'll be back for those empanadas.

While most of the SF Bayarea cities are experiencing the hottest day of the week(i.e. in the 90s)..yikes..My friend and I are attending a training here in Oakland with temperature that is so comfy...low 70s...nice....=) Lunch was not provided in our training (budget cuts) so we use our bible app (THE YELP app) to check out a good restaurant...Yelp never failed me or her (she's also a Yelper)..so we decided to check this place out!! Rio California as other Yelpers mentioned is located at this beautiful park surrounded by Victorian homes called Preservation Park...really tucked away as if that this place don't want to be discovered...it totally felt exclusive!!! But don't let that fool you coz line started forming just before we get our order. Thank goodness we got here when there was no line yet. The cashier (he looks like the owner) took the time to tell me (no crowd yet) what their specials were...yelpers recommended jerk chicken...but I went with their specialty the National Brazilian dish which is the Feijoada (sp)..it's black beans and blackened sausages (portuguese linguica, italian sausage)..so flavorful ..it also came with rice, greens, and something roasted grainy ...My friend also ordered the same hehehe. Oakland is pretty lucky to have this place..I wish we have it in the Southbay well by SJ that is....My friend and I were both satisfied...we totally recommend this place if you are in the area!!!
(5)Alice L.
I came here for lunch with my girl friend last week and I really like this place! I've been searching for a Brazilian restaurant for the longest time and I'm so glad that this is just around the corner of my workplace! :) You MUST order the Jerk Chicken. It's seasoned and grilled to perfection! It's quite spicy but I also like to request for their homemade spicy sauce for an extra kick! The next thing I'm in love with is their green salad dressing!! I really want to ask the owner for the recipe but it's probably a secret! Their Seafood Risotto is delightful too!! Their portions are very generous! :) Also, thank you for the excellent service!!
(5)Suir R.
Very cute little restaurant with yummy food, friendly and fast service. Gotta love it!
(5)O F.
A warm staff and food that you can't go wrong with, I'd recommend for lunch any day with any one: business, causal, or even solo. Hidden in Preservation park, it really is a Mecca of Oakland.
(5)Kristin S.
My friend and I were looking for a new place to try that would have tasty food and speedy service. This was the perfect place!! The service was great! And the food ... was amazing (the jerk chicken is a MUST)! We will definitely go again!
(5)Billy A.
The best place to eat in Oakland! I went here after a friend recommended it to me and I must say I was completely blown away. The owner took the order himself and takes a lot of pride in his restaurant he came out twice to personally check if the food was good. It was! Will be back there again for sure!
(5)Benjamin K.
What a neat place, tucked in the back of the beautiful preservation park in old Oakland. Small Brazilian place with great food, very homemade feel, the seafood risotto will keep me coming again and again.
(5)John H.
Food: Jerk chicken was pretty impressive. I opted out of the rice for some extra greens, which I regret. I think the owner knew I'd feel this way, so he kept asking if I would like to at least try some rice with it at no charge. Trying to be disciplined for just one day, I didn't give in. I thought it was great that the owner asked though. Service: Outstanding. Very friendly and accommodating. Venue: It's a real cozy joint with some outdoor seating. I wouldn't recommend coming here with a group or if it's raining because you might get stuck outside... I'm definitely coming back for the rice! I LOVE GOOD RICE :]
(4)raji b.
Food was perfect, the owner/cashier was really nice and helpful and loved the location in preservation park. Will return if I can get there by 3.
(4)Cammy J.
I came here for lunch with my coworkers. I ordered the the 3 fish tacos. The food was just okay.
(3)Joe O.
Gostoso: 1. Jerk Chicken. (Can be slightly dry but item 2 fixes that) 2. CILANTRO DRESSING. Put it over rice, salad, meat... 3. Feijoada. Delicious black beans with bits of bacon, sausage. Next time will have to see if they have any mango type of drinks or smoothies. Great atmosphere and friendly service.
(5)Greg M.
I've been here a couple times but have only eaten here twice! I came once, but they had just closed and the other time I went they weren't open... So, Check their hours. They're only open M-F until 3:30 and being a college student, it was hard to finally make it when they were open. Its also hard to find parking! I had to circle the block a couple times until I finally found a spot open The first time I went I had the jerk chicken plate and it was fantastic! The chicken was moist, but nice and spicy. I really enjoyed the nice kick it had and it wasn't too dry. The salad was good with the cilantro dressing and their portions were pretty generous (it also came with rice). Being in the middle of preservation park is also really nice and its a quiet place for lunch even though its right by downtown oakland. The second time I went i had the jerk chicken burrito. The burrito was not as good as the plate in my opinion. The tortilla was good, but the chicken inside was a little dry. Inside the burrito, I only tasted sour cream, tomatoes and the chicken. In terms of a burrito, it was not very good. The portions were still generous and it included a salad. I would still give it four stars for the great atmosphere at Preservation Park and for my first experience there. I would definitely get the jerk chicken plate over the burrito! And get a guarana drink as well!
(4)Moby K.
great home style cooked food. The owner is very pleasant and extremely nice.
(4)Mayhem X.
Met a friend here for lunch and sat outside. The area at preservation park is beautiful. You order at the counter, then take your seat I had the jerk chicken which comes boneless with a mound of salad and rice. Chicken was moist and their special house spicy sauce was great. Owner and staff are very friendly. Next time I try the empanada Would definitely come again..too bad only open for lunch
(5)Julie C.
Truly authentic Brazilian food. I had some amazing fish tacos here. Great to sit on the outdoor porch of this Victorian and relax with fabulous food.
(5)Tiffany S.
Just had a GREAT lunch experience. Food was good, setting is awesome, and service was exceptional. Why the hell have I never been here before?? And whats up with these Yelp friends with reviews who never told me about this place or suggested it for our lunches? I could even find free parking nearby!
(5)Chuck B.
I wanted to try this place because I wanted to do something a little different. Located in Preservation Park, but coming from east of the Caldecott, I thought parking would be a chore. I found street parking within one block of the location. The setting in Preservation Park was great with the restored Victorians and plenty of shade trees. I met a friend at the entrance to the cafe, and I was a little surprised that it felt like an old school sandwich shop. The menus were posted around the counter and the owner was very happy and patient in pointing out the particular dishes. He also mentioned that we had come in at a moment of slowness and during lunch they can get very backed up when office workers from nearby come in for lunch. All dishes looked reasonably priced and I decided to try the Brazilian national dish - feijoada. After ordering, we waited outside at a table on the outside deck. Our dishes came fairly quickly. The portions were larger than I would have expected for the price, and the flavor was outstanding. If I have another excuse to venture out to downtown Oakland for lunch, I will definitely go back.
(4)Rebecca A.
They used to have a location in Alameda that I would go to during the day, and it was absolutely amazing. The salad is to die for!!! I've honestly never had better food then Rio's, and I was so sad to see them leave Alameda. Happy to know there's one close in downtown though (: Not only is the food amazing, but the owner and workers are really nice! Rio is a hidden treasure in the bay area, you need to try this place!
(5)Kristel S.
The ultimate test: I brought Brazilian friends here - and they loved it! We walked in, the owner was at the counter, and before you could blink they were chatting away in Portugese. We ordered Jerk Chicken, a tilapia plate, and tostada (I was feeling less Brazilian today), with 3 Brazilian sodas (Guarana Antarctica). The food arrived piled high, with generous salad and rice on the chicken and tilapia plates. Both Brazilian friends CLEANED their plates! It was absolutely delicious food. As a bonus, it was towards the end of the lunch rush, so the owner came by and was chatting with us in a mixture of Portugese with a bit of English mixed in (mostly so I didn't feel excluded!). We had a great time, and took pictures outside - enjoying the historic Victorians and the beautiful fountain that made this a special lunch. Note: I've been here before with non-Brazilians, and we've always enjoyed our food very much. Will need to bring my husband by soon or he'll feel left out - maybe on Wednesday or Friday when they have Brazilian specials!
(5)Allie H.
I had seen the great reviews for Rio California but had pretty much resigned myself to the fact I would never get to eat there due to their limited hours - why aren't they open on the weekends?? So sad. But then my bridesmaids came to town and I took a Friday half day - I knew just where I wanted to take them for lunch. RIO CALIFORNIA. We piled in the car and began our journey to down town Oakland, snagged a parking spot by by the park and walked in. Rio California is nestled back in Preservation Park in a cute Victorian house, the restaurant was full when we arrived around 1:30pm on Friday. It is a fairly small space but has a nice patio. The owner was at the counter, and was a really nice guy if a little hurried (probably due to the line of people). I ordered the Fish Tacos, and my sister ordered the jerk chicken burrito, the other girls followed suit with tacos as well. The dishes all came with a delicious salad that was topped with an amazing dressing. The tacos were delicious, and very messy, but in a good way. I was practically licking my plate! But the real show stopper was the jerk chicken burrito my sister ordered, talk about food envy - that thing was monstrously huge and so freakin' good!! I stole MANY bites... I can only hope and pray for another half day so that I can drag my fiance there for a jerk chicken burrito. The addiction has begun. If you are looking for lunch on a weekday head to Rio California and get that jerk chicken burrito. Your taste buds will thank you.
(5)Linh L.
On a leisurely weekday, my friend and I found our way over to Rio California for lunch. The restaurant was tucked away in a corner of the preservation park; it was such a beautiful location. The inside of the restaurant was cozy, with outdoor seating that's perfect on a sunny day. But I digress. Time for the food! Jerk chicken is, and always will be, a winner in my book. The jerk chicken was seasoned beautifully, and the requisite cilantro dressing on the salad was delicious. I also ordered the tilapia special of the day with some sort of tomato, onion and caper sauce on top. That sauce was TO DIE FOR; so so so good. The other plus is the owner. Even in just a few seconds of talking with him, you can tell he loves what he does. When my friend and I arrived, he rattled off the day's specials in such a proud and happy manner. Nothing beats that kind of care and dedication.
(5)Shira O.
What a delicious, hidden spot in downtown Oakland. The prices area really good and you get huge portions. The food is super tasty and the service is great. It is in preservation park, so it has a very lush, woodsy feel. I had the tilapia with rice and salad and it was just the right amount of food for a hungry person (((me))) at lunch. It is a "walk-up and pay" then scout out your seat and sit down kind a place. So don't come looking for a server and swanky white table cloths, these things you will not find here. I will def. go back here again.
(4)Ander C.
Rio California is a nice placed tucked away in preservation park. Most people without yelp of the internet probably wouldnt know it was there. First off, the reviews and the 4.5 star rating enticed me and when I finally got the chance to come here (on the company) I was a bit underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong the food is good. The jerk chicken is not dry but moist and juicy. I also like the salad that comes on the side and the dressing they put it in. The man taking orders is also really nice and I like how you can sit outside to eat as well. The food also comes out pretty quickly so the wait isnt very bad. I guess im giving 3 stars because I thought the food would knock my socks off. Overall I do like this place and the food is better than most of what you'd find in Oakland.
(3)Connie L.
Delicious, very reasonably priced food with a Brazilian twist - loved the jerk chicken, the cilantro dressing on the salad, and the very tasty black beans. The patio area is shaded and beautiful. The owner and waiters are incredibly nice. What's not to love?
(5)Adam R.
Wonderful food hidden in Oakland. Jerk chicken with rice and salad - extra hot sauce - to die for. Doesn't take Amex - so bring visa/mc or cash. Prices reasonable. In summer sit outside on terrace or by fountain in preservation park.
(5)Eva V.
An Oakland oasis! Not only is the scenery in Preservation Park gorgeous - fountain, Victorian homes, peaceful space in the midst of Oakland hum - but this restaurant is such a gem of quality service and quality food. Quaint, small space. Came here last week with a work group. The owner took the time to meet with us ahead of time, set out pastries and cool water before we arrived, then showered us with kindness, efficiency and quality from start to finish. My veggie lasagna was yummy, the salad was large enough to satiate even my "I want more green things!" tendencies, and nothing beat feeling so well cared for by the owner. You know you've found a good place when you feel a little proud of yourself. Like, "I know the good stuff..." And it's all thanks to Yelp and the lovely staff and environment of Rio California. Such a sweet find.
(5)Lluna A.
Simply delicious!! So far I tried Jerk Chicken w/ Salad (Cilantro Dressing) and Chicken Breast with Polenta...Amazing! Please go ahead and try! And the Manager is very polite and always smiling! He gives you a very warm welcome :))

It was a nice sunny Friday afternoon and we were looking for a place for lunch. My dad and I walked past some familiar restaurants such as City Cup, and City Grille. Straight ahead was Preservation Park. I had never been to this area before and was impressed. There was a fountain in the center of the park. The scenery was beautiful. It had a classic look with Victorian houses and benches. I was disappointed that I had not brought my camera. As I stopped to take a moment to soak in this view, for a second I forgot why I was there in first place. Rio is located on the left hand side and blends in with the park. The looks are of a residential house in the neighborhood and if you're not paying attention, you would walk right by without even noticing. There is some outdoor seating which is great on a warm day. As you walk up the stairs and enter, It has a nice and cozy feel to it. We were greeted by a friendly cashier. As I was staring at the menu, all of the choices looked good and I end up getting chicken burrito. My dad decided on the tilapia. At Rio, the style is that you order up front and when the food is ready, it is brought over to your table. Burritos are usually a bit much for me, but I felt I could handle it. Seriously, how big could it be? Well, I was in for a surprise when my dish arrived. It should have been called a super burrito. This was large enough for lunch AND dinner, plus breakfast for the next day. I get a knife to cut it and decide to box up half. There's also some salad on the side. The inside of the burrito contained chicken, beans, cheese, bell peppers and sauce. I like the meat and all of the ingredients complimented each other. The tortilla was thick and everything tasted really good. The salad wasn't bad either. All of this was only for $5.95. I was more than satisfied during this lunch meal. My dad enjoyed his tilapia as well and were stuffed. I would definitely like to come back and try some of the other special dishes. It would be great to sit out in the sun on a summer afternoon.

This is a perfect relaxed lunch spot! I had some time to kill with my mom last Tuesday, and I consulted Yelp for a nearby lunch joint. My mom's never had Brazilian food, so I chose Rio California. We wandered into Preservation Park and found Rio to be a cute converted house. It was a very small, unassuming restaurant. The owner is wonderful - sweet, eager, and very excited about the food he serves and his culture. We had the special tilapia fish tacos with beans and corn and the jerk chicken - I loved everything I ate. Both dishes came with a fresh green salad. Bill came to only $17 for both dishes, so I would say super reasonable price. The cilantro dressing on the fresh greens salad reminded me of the tri-tip sandwiches I used to get as a student at UC Berkeley - coincidentally, the owner informed me the owner of the tri-tip sandwich huts in Berkeley used to work for him. I love that cilantro dressing, and I poured it all over my jerk chicken. The tacos were satisfying and fresh - grilled tilapia was moist and very light, not oily, since they were grilled. They used pinto beans, corn, and a fabulous spicy sauce in them. As a huge fan of jerk chicken, I loved how moist and spicy the jerk chicken was. They used quality chicken that was super flavorful with a dollop of white rice in the sauce. I think the green salad really brightened up the plate and kept it from feeling too heavy. I will so be back!

This place is very hidden, a small gated, non profit community that is beautiful. This Victorian House is converted to a restaurant with outside seating and right in front of a roundabout plaza with a fountain and benches. Very peaceful. I wasn't even aware this little community existed in Oakland. We ordered the jerk chicken, chicken croquettes (which were amazing), fish tacos and seafood risotto. Everyone in our party loved the meals. The garlic cilantro sauce is amazing and the owner, Nate was very nice. I highly recommend this restaurant. Great atmosphere, customer service and delicious food.

Darling little Brazilian restaurant tucked inside one of the Victorian homes in Preservation Park. The owner is very nice and always there taking orders. I've tried the Jamaican jerk chicken and grilled tilapia both of which are tasty. Both are served with rice and salad with creamy cilantro lime dressing. Also had their baked chicken empanada which is decent but gets kudos points for not being fried.
(4)David S.
Magical venue, friendly servers, and top that with amazing spicy Jerk chicken. That sweat means your are satisfied buddy... ; D
(5)Brooke F.
Perfect Lunch Spot. Quick service, well balanced meals, delicious veggies, perfectly cooked meat. VERY affordable. TIP: Buy an emanada to take home, and they are awesome. It took me right back to my trip to south america, authentic and complete with an olive and hard boiled egg inside.
(4)Tony G.
The food here is good. Not overpriced, and they give you nice size portions. I think this is a hidden jewel of the town. I have suggested this place to many people and I will continue to do so.
(4)Joseph C.
I eat here once or twice a week and am NEVER disappointed. I've tried almost everything on the menu... and I always come back for more! Delicious food Quick and friendly service Low prices Clean Beautiful and cozy environment 5 stars - hands down!!
(5)Jules K.
I have not been to this place in a long time & I am glad I came back. The side salad with cilantro dressing is delicious! Specials change daily. They normally have a traditional Brazilian dish but also jerk chicken, sandwiches, burritos, lasagna. Today I tried the seafood risotto & my friend had the grilled tilapia. I preferred the risotto. I felt great, just enough food to fill me but did not make me feel stuffed or bloated. The owner is super nice, small place so limited seating. It will get slammed right around 12. We went at 11:30 right before the crowd. Will return again soon, just for the salad alone & want to try the empanadas one day. Must try, beautiful peaceful surroundings of Preservation Park makes you forget you are still in Oaktown!

I am a lover of Pres. Park and a lover of Rio cafe. I first thought this place would be a cafeteria for employees yet when I decided to go on a day off I was mistaken. The cafe is great! Seating on the wrap around porch under the shade of overgrown palm trees, bottomless cups of coffee, large salads, yummy bagels, quiche, veggie lasagna and wonderful veggie sandwiches make this a haven for a light bite. The owner is so friendly and goes out of his way to make sure your coffee cup is full ( which I so appreciate). Inside there is a huge stack of travel magazines which I love to browse during my lunch to dream up a new trip. The only reason this place gets 4 stars is because of the hours. They are only open during business days/hours. I think they could do a killer weekend brunch!!!!
(4)Denise W.
I had been searching for a Brasilian food substitute in the East Bay, after getting spoiled when I lived in Santa Cruz. I think I have found the place that is equally as good! The portion of salad was huge; honestly, I could have just had the salad and it would have been plenty filling. Plus, the salad dressing was really good! I've only been a few times and ordered jerk chicken and the coxinhas (I think they're also called croquettes?). The owner was so friendly and even described a little bit of background and history about the different foods. Eating outdoors makes the experience more enjoyable when the weather's nice. Definitely one of my fave lunchtime spots!
(4)Annelise B.
This place is fantastic. The food is phenomenal and reminds me of the food I've had upon traveling to Brazil. The owner adds a great personal touch and always checks in to see how things are. I've brought many people here for lunch, including friends from Brazil. Everyone loves this place. I cannot say enough about how much I love Rio California!
(5)Ming W.
I tried their food for the first time today. I could not decide Jerk Chicken or the Feijoada so I order both and split them with a friend. I am glad I did because it really tasted better this way. ^^
(4)Sharon M.
I had their version of the Brazilian national dish, the Feijoada (pronounced Feshwada). It was very delicious. (The sausage was a bit spicy for me so I just passed it along to my friend, who enjoyed it.)
(5)ceecee m.
Delicious and such a beautiful setting. Love the cilantro dressing. Prices are very fair, service fast and friendly. What's not to love?
(5)K T.
After reading wonderful reviews, my girlfriend and I decided to check out Rio California for lunch today, and I am so glad we did! The food was amazing! We both ordered the jerk chicken plate, the chicken had great flavor! The plate normally did not come with black beans; however, the owner came over and offered some to us as they are a traditional side on a Brazillian plate- the beans were amazing as well! This was a great "home-cooked" lunch in a great location. I have not had such a great lunch experience in a very long time. I highly recommend Rio California, I know we will be back to try some of their other delicious plates. I wish they were open on weekends!

This place is truly a gem. It is an excellent, very casual, spot to go to for lunch - especially on a nice day where they have outdoor seating - or you can get take out and sit right in front at the fountains in Preservation Park. It is like a little getaway retreat in the middle of downtown Oakland. On a stressed work day, this is a godsent - as a way to take a breath, relax and feel like you've actually gotten away for lunch. But more impressive is the amazingly fresh and delicious food. The salads are always wonderful and fresh. I absolutely LOVE the cilantro dressing. Ohh... I'm thinking about it now. This is a must try. The jerk chicken is not hot (like I would expect Jamaican jerk to be), but it is very good. I dislike dark meat, and although this meat is dark, it is such high quality and well prepared that I couldn't taste any gamey flavor that usually comes along with dark meat. The rice is wonderful and perfectly cooked. The service is great, the owner is so super nice, and the orders come out very fast. I have had other dishes here, including the croquettes and sandwiches. Everything is just sooo good. This is a definite go to place.
(4)Holla F.
I love their grilled chicken salad with cilantro cesar dressing. Great place to sit outside during lunch. Not too heavy or too light, just right.
(4)Sam L.
This food is so delicious and unique. The man who took my order was super helpful when I was trying to decide and even showed me how I should eat it. I live in the neighborhood but don't work around here so I wish they had extended hours so I could come here more often!
(5)Phil W.
One word: Feijoada! Rich and complex flavors, great textures and mouth feel. Loved it.
(5)Bret C.
One of my all time best eating experiences ever. Located in a cool historical area just out side downtown Oakland, this is a must try place. The two gentlemen at the front, one appearing to be the owner, delivered some of the best service and food I have ever had. There is one thing that makes all the difference and that is pure genuineness. You can sense the owners passion for the food and appreciation for the customers. From the second we stepped in the door these two went above and beyond to make us feel at home. We had the jerk chicken and feijoada witch were both amazing.
(5)Jorge H.
Never knew such good Brazilian food could exist in Oakland, much less in Preservation Park. This restaurant is in a quiet community and hidden from the rough streets of down town. It gives you the feeling that you are at a cafe in a quaint neighborhood. The owner takes you in from the minute you step foot and makes you feel like family. The staff is friendly and service is quick. I've only tried the Jerk Chicken here so far, but it was very delicious and was very close to traditional Brazilian cuisine you can find at pricier establishments. I highly recommend giving them a visit or two. *Note: Downside...no dinner service.
(4)Sarun P.
It's simply awesome. The taste, the amount, the service timing and not of all the price is so great. Not to mention the beautiful view to the reservation park!
(5)Ryan C.
The setting is wonderful here. Namely, the lack of cars hustling by makes it worth a visit. If you can snag an outdoor table, even better! It gives you a taste of what a car-free world could be like. I found the food fairly tasty.
(3)Mamma B.
I really can't say enough about this place-these guys are true restauranteurs! And they just opened a spot in Alameda-will have to try that out one day... I just wanted to add they have wonderful catering services as well. We ordered a fruit platter last minute and our meeting comprised of health food fanatics and foodies were equally impressed with the quality and flavor of the produce-everything was perfectly ripe and delicious. Thanks Rio!
(5)Keri B.
The empanadas, jerk chicken, and chicken tostada are as good as the yelpers all say. Though portions are huge (I always have to save half in the office fridge for next day's lunch!), I also have to say that, for me, Rio is the perfect healthy eating establishment and keeps me winning the ongoing battle- because I cannot eat there without having a salad. That cilantro dressing is craving inducing! (so, yay Rio, yay salads, and in time, maybe I'll look like a Brazilian supermodel.) And if not, it's still great food!
(4)Anna Y.
As a now-displaced Oakland Downtown native (94607 born and raised!), I am still shocked by the recent gentrification / yuppie-fication of the downtown area every time I visit home. If the inevitable tide of change must come, I hope that it brings more establishments like Rio California to the mix. Decor: Located in Preservation Parkway right behind the two towers of the Ron V. Dellums Federal Building, you find this marvelous time capsule of Oakland when it used to be a well-to-do suburb of San Francisco. The restaurant itself tucked into the first floor of a well-kept Victorian house right by a fountain. There's outside patio seating (maybe 4 tables with a total of a dozen chairs or so?) that look out onto the fountain, and around 8 tables with 2 seats per inside. They've done a great job rennovating the interior with bright lighting, clean seating, and paintings from Brazil hanging around the walls. Led here by Yelp, I was at first skeptical. Brazilian food, in Oakland? There's a wonderful street of Brazilian establishments in Cambridge, MA that I am very fond of and I was, at first, skeptical at how food would compare. However, I placed faith in its redic Yelp rating and stopped by for lunch around 1:00pm on a thursday afternoon with a friend and decided to enjoy our orders inside the restaurant. Food: We both decided to order the infamous Jerk Chicken plate. Oh mighty Yelp Gods, forgive me for ever doubting you in the first place because it was, using the proper diction of my native territory, BOMB. For $8, you get a heaping portion of house salad with cilantro dressing, perfectly cooked rice, two generous chicken breast pieces, and the owner even threw in a tasting of the black bean soup that was the special of the day. I could seriously write sonnets about this chicken. But actually. I've never actually enjoyed Jerk Chicken at any other restaurant before, but this sampling of white meat was on a totally different spectrum of tasty deliciousness. Perfectly seasoned with just the right mix of spices, it achieved that miraculous and elusive goal of being cooked to the magic point where it was uniformly juicy and delicious all over without even a segment of being overdone or dry. Yelp Gods, I am not worthy of this blessing. Though the greens used in this salad was nothing out of what you could find in any grocery store, what really made it stand out was 1) its freshness, and 2) the dressing. At small lower-end cafes, I usually expect that some of the lettuce will taste old and wilted, but that wasn't the case here. The dressing itself is something special- mint green with hints of what I assume are garlic and cilantro, I wiped my plate clean of the sauce. Finally, there was the rice. Usually, there's not so much to say about mere white rice, but as my friend pointed out, it's also rare that a place will do rice right and meet the stringent standards our asian moms and the bowl-of-rice at every meal for 18+ years has set for us. They took the time to shape the serving in a bowl, which I always appreciate, and it was perfectly moist and, I dare to say it? hinted at a bit of seasoning. Drinks: I've been a big fan of South American coffee since a trip to Argentina, and I was excited to hear that they served a Brazilian roast at this restaurant. I'm usually concerned because it's so easy for coffee to taste burnt, Even my friend, who never drinks coffee, tried to steal sips from me. Service: What really separates Rio California is the service. We had the fortuitous chance to interact with the owner, who called in our orders and served us. I feel terrible for forgetting his name, but he was AWESOME. Seriously. He was really friendly with suggestions for what to order and checked up on us several times throughout the meal. When I accidentally almost made him throw away my friend's plate (completely my fault, she went out to check on the parking meter and I assumed she was done eating when he asked if he could bust her plate), he generously offered to replace the entire order even though we were almost done with it! In the end, he still packaged an extra piece of the jerk chicken and the rice for us on the house because they were closing up. He also had a long conversation with us about his background and his daughter and mentioned that he used to be a journalist back in Brazil before moving to America and operating a food stand near the Berkeley campus. I really want to go back just to ask him more about that. I also saw another guest order an acai bowl (acai berries blended and served with granola and bananas) , which wasn't on the menu, when I asked the owner about this, he said that they don't put it on the menu during lunch hours but he'd be happy to make it anytime I asked. Def going back for that. Great for: Lunch. And would be good for dinner too, except they're only open Monday to Fridays from morning till 3:30pm.
(5)Jacob W.
The setting and the love push this place over the top. And the food's good too! The setting (Preservation Park) is idyllic (for downtown). The service is sweet, friendly, solicitous -- I could go on and on. How is everything? Have all your food? Want some hot sauce? More dressing? Enjoying your food? More water? Holy moly. Prices are reasonable, the food satisfying. Maybe not world-altering, but very satisfying. The homemade hot-sauce alone was worth a return visit -- make sure you get it with your jerk chicken.
(5)Gerard L.
Jerk Chicken, awesome quiet and isolated location. Victorian neighborhood with friendly staff. I'll for sure come back. Enuf Sed!

Visited on 2/20/13 Well...This place deserves the 5 stars!! The owner is such a nice guy. We happened to go one day at 9am and we were too early. The owner was setting up but the cooks weren't there yet. He advised us to come back around 11:30am but I had an appointment and my husband and I promised him we'd be back. We returned today at 11:30am for some lunch and I had the Feijoada and, OH MY GOODNESS, it was SOOOO delicious! The spices, the food, everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The owner came to our table and taught me how to eat this great brazilian dish since I had never had brazilian food before (Im Puerto Rican so I was glad he explained it. There are certain things you have to do in specific ways with traditional food). It's so impressive how such a small establishment can be so incredibly delightful. We are definitely going back!!
(5)Carla L.
Charming location, Charming Victorian and a Charming owner. The owner took our order and rightfully anticipated our order. I had the fish tacos plate: 3 tilapia tacos with roasted corn, whole pinto beans, a divine tangy (lime?) lettuce, slice of avocado, a dollop of sour cream on each corn tortilla taco and generous side salad, with a creamy cilantro dressing. Hubby had the jerk chicken: (2) generous tender chicken thighs done jerk style (layered spices, that bite back, in a flirty way), with white rice, beans and the same side salad I was served. The food was brought to our cozy table quickly and although the inside dining is small, we didn't feel our space was invaded, maybe the pale yellow walls and cool Brazilian jazz had something to do with it. We will be back and are so sad the Alameda location is gone. Needless to say, my taste buds are happily charmed. Overall, a surprise setting in downtown Oakland, that was as romantic as lunch with food can get! Wink!
(5)Crystal S.
Excellent place for a delicious and quick lunch. My coworkers and I came back repeatedly because of the high quality of the food and the fun, prompt, and friendly service. Some menu items change daily, and it is as worthwhile to try the mainstays as it is to try the new items. Don't let the long line to the cafe discourage you, you will get your order quickly and your food will be great. The owner knows how to bust through a line and still manages to remember what everyone ordered and get it to them FAST. Try the jerk chicken and Brazilian National dish if you can.
(5)Hello G.
amazing brazilian food, great rice, beans, and chicken dish. get that!!! :)
(5)bah h.
3.5 Good, but I wasn't floored. Based on one visit and two dishes, everything seemed very fair for the prices, but nothing exactly wowed me. My friend loved his jerked chicken, but I wasn't nuts about it. The setting is very clean, the food is fine, the prices very fair, and the staff seemed friendly. Nothing wrong with this place, but with the enormous arsenal of great restaurants in Oakland, I probably won't be back.
(3)caitlin m.
This is my [new] #1 lunch spot in downtown oakland. Fast, delicious, one-of-a-kind food in a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. I ordered a spinach empanda with a side salad. The empanada was hearty and delicious with perfectly seasoned spinach, carmelized onions and delicious egg. To boot, these Brazilian empanadas are glazed with sweet egg and baked - mine was seriously fresh and wonderful. Side salad was composed of leafy greens & a homemade cilanto dressing. Altogether I paid $6.95! And I got to sit in gorgeous (and miraculously uncrowded) Preservation Park while I ate. For a delicious, unique lunch in Oakland, you can't beat this place.
(5)Carol W.
Still consistently one of the best places to enjoy Old Oakland. If the entire city was a wonderful as this place to eat (and there are more than a few gems in this city), it could easily parallel my hometown (Brooklyn, NY). Please don't hesitate to go and enjoy this wonderful spot on a warm summer day (I know that Oakland doesn't get many of them), and remember that they're also open for breakfast as well. Sit in Preservation Park and have a smile on knowing that there are still some very beautiful and affordable places to eat and enjoy friends and family....even in Oakland!
(5)Vada D.
Great food, great service, and a wonderful atmosphere. The perfect working lunch spot. Loved the jerk chicken, caesar salad, and spinach empanada. Everything was fresh, tasty, and quality. The location in Preservation Park provides a touch of serenity in a bustling neighborhood.
(5)Camille B.
Their caesar salad with chicken is amazing!! Chicken is seasoned perfectly, the dressing is so yummy while still light, the lettuce was fresh, and the crispies added a nice crunch. Hands down, the best salad in this area. Specialty's salads get boring after a while, there's only so many different ok combos you can make at fountain cafe, and while Cafe 15 salads are very good, it's also really expensive. Definitely found my new salad place. I would be over the moon if they added acai berry bowls to their menu.. apparently only San Diego caught on to that craze, and I miss them. I'd be there morning and afternoon!
(5)Ryan W.
I just ate luncha t this little cafe in Preservation Park. The park itself is beautiful, and you can sit outside (if you aren't with a bunch of co-workers that want to stay out of the cool brisk fall air.) For a Brazillian palce, there sure are alot of non brazillian items on the menu, I guess that is the "California" part of "Rio California"). I got the Empanada and a Salad. The salad was made with fresh grees and had a great creamy pesto-ish dressing on it.
(3)Farhad F.
Something for everyone, wide price range, veggie and meaty, super friendly staff, and definitely has a Brazilian spin. Wonderful atmosphere, too. If it wasn't so out of the way (which is also a perk in most ways) I'd go there a lot more frequently.
(5)King C.
The food here is excellent and ambience perfect on a nice day. Worth finding for something unexpected. The owner is awesome, super-nice and wanting to inform you about everything. I had jerk chicken and it rocked. He also let me sample the fijoda which was killer.
(5)Jocelyn W.
In short - Jerk chicken plate is super good...no need to order anything else (although I'm sure the other stuff is good too!) I'm giving this place 4 stars only because i've only had 1 item on their menu...I work next door but goodness the Jerk chicken plate is so freakin' good i can't bring myself to order anything else when i'm there. full intentions to try something else, but I really haven't had jerk chicken this good that wasn't homecooked. The plate comes with rice that's soaked in the chicken juice and salad with a delicious creamy dressing that's light but also bursting with flavor. Also, for a lunch that's just under $10 the portion is pretty large...enough that I always have some left over. There's 2 large chunks of chicken breast that are wonderfully seasoned and bursting with flavor. There's just enough kick to get your mouth jumping and the chicken is really moist. A lot of places tend to have dried out white meat but this place is so juicy I initially thought they were chicken thighs. It's like the meat is stewed or something for a really really long time. Also, the service at this place is really fast and polite. The guy manages to remember a whole slew of orders and who got what, which I think is impressive because he actually manages to personalize the service even though there's a line backed throughout the place. I will say the indoor seating is limited and that's the only 'problem', but preservation park is so beautiful I don't know why you would want to sit inside...(ok, I guess if it rained or something).
(4)Lynn F.
One of the best brazillian food around. Please stop by ;and say hi for NEY,and try the special jerk chicken,AND the cilantro garlic sauce...........
(5)Andrew L.
A hidden gem. Really delicious food, and tucked away in a little part of downtown Oakland that you would never even know existed. Had the Brazilian jerk chicken and it was perfect. Combined with a great salad and perfectly cooked rice, and it's now one of my favorite lunch spots.
(5)Ching L.
Pros: - 1 star for the really friendly service. The cashier is always patient enough to describe the different menu items to you so you get the best idea of what to order. - 2 stars for the amazing food and vegetarian options offered. The sandwiches are delicious. - 1 star for the location in Preservation Park which is such a beautiful place. If you come here, take the chance to sit outside. It's much better there. - What gives this place the extra star is just how attentive the restaurant people are. I ordered a sandwich with pesto added on (I love pesto!) and halfway through my meal, the cashier/waiter came out with a fresh batch of pesto dip (that they apparently just made) and brought it to my table. Totally unnecessary but very thoughtful. This place is great!
(5)Ari T.
Amazing food and the owner is very nice. I work near by and will definitely be a repeat customer!
(5)Cat L.
Another quick and dirty of some of the dishes I've tried: 1. Shrimp Salad- delicious and huge (think Shrimp Louie) 2. Greek Salad- delicious and huge (perfectly dressed) 3. Tilapia over rice- delicious and huge (with side salad) Great spot in downtown Oakland, awesome staff, and good eats on the cheap!!
(4)mindy y.
Jerk chicken was tasty and moist. And they gave a good portion! Service was very good and hospitable. Fast if you go before noon.
(4)Greg T.
i went to rio california based on a friend's reference. as suggested i purchased the jerk chicken burrito. it was meh at best being a bit dry and tasteless, accompanied with store purchased chips, and the best thing on the plate...the salad
(2)Juan S.
I love this place. Where else will you have your order taken everyday by the owner of the business? The food is amazing, the price is cheap and the atmosphere is friendly and pretty. I love this place! Everyone should stop by and try the Jerk Chicken!
(5)Pauline S.
Working in downtown oakland, it can be kind of hard to find good, interesting places to try out. But right inside Preservation Park in Oakland is this gem of a place. I've only been here a handful of times but the owner always greets me as if we're old friends. The prices are pretty reasonable; I usually get jerk chicken or the tilapia which hover around the $10-$12 price range. But their menu also has sandwiches and salads that are a few bucks less. The food comes out quick and I always enjoy every bite. They definitely don't skimp on the portions either. The indoor seating is sparse, so I usually sit outside in the patio when it's sunny. There's definitely a great view since you're in preservation park.

They say first impressions are the most important and the owner of this place nailed it! He was awesome - kind to all that came in and just as friendly to us first timers as he was to his regulars. The service was also extremely timely! My friend got the Jerk chicken and I had the chicken skewers both good. The salad was mixed greens with a great cilantro dressing. The chicken was very tender and flavorful. Personally I was not big on the rice it seemed a little dry. They have daily specials as well as some every day plates. For drinks they have (coffee, tea, iced drinks, and smoothies). It's a seat yourself (they bring you the food) buss your own table type place. The great service continued when the owner came over to check on us a few times to make sure everything was ok! The restaurant isn't large but there is inside and outside dining. The place was basically empty when we first arrived (which made me a little weary) but between the time we were greeted and began digging into the food not only was I sure it was a good pick for lunch but the place was packed with regulars.
(3)Courtney J.
Great spot for lunching in Downtown. I had the jerk chicken which was deliciously spicy and paired well with the salad and cilantro dressing. Prices are good with everything under $10. Staff is friendly and were happy to accommodate our group of 8 without reservations (since they don't take reservations.)
(4)Mark B.
so I am also on a Brazilian kick lately... this place is a HOME run; I had the tilapia; gma had the fish tacos; both were ridiculously good - both came with generous sides; and the price was right $24 including tax/tip for both meals plus 2 drink; and the service was OUTSTANDING - highly recommend you check this place out.
(5)H H.
Love. This. Place. Jerk chicken is so tasty and the cilantro dressing is amazing. I love taking the time to walk over here; the setting is so serene and gets me out of my business lunch funk.
(5)Miranda R.
This place is located in a fabulous little oasis - apparently restored from Oakland days of yore. Funny that the restaurant itself, rather than some refined formal place for the landed, has a casual, friendly vibe. You seat yourself, order from the counter, and bus your own table. It is well worth it! Every plate seems to come with crispy fresh greens with lovely cilantro dressing. Portions are generous and prices are right. Come with a big appetite and leave satisfied, with nary a dent in your wallet.
(4)Sweets M.
I love that this place is somewhat hidden. The architecture is mad crazy. It reminds me of like, "NY stoops meets Oakland." The cafe is just warm. There's magazines for you to read, little eye catching things to look at, a board with random photo's around Brazil. The service, so good! The owner is so personable, so friendly. He's pretty detailed when you ask him a question. I sat close to the register so everytime he walked out, he'd show me what others ordered cause I kept staring, it just all looked soooo good! My friend ordered the Jerk Chicken, really tender. So good, I kind've wanted to steal his food. Lol. I ordered the Beef Lasagna, Omgggg. The Best lasagna I ever tasted. Both plates came with salad, the dressing is home-made and it was really... really.. good. I don't even really like salad, but this was a one time exception! I usually save food for to go but it was that good that I just scraped the whole plate and called it a wrap! The price was really reasonable. Upon leaving, the owner continued making conversation with my friend and I. He was teaching my friend and I some Portuguese! Nice! Lol. Oh yeah, bring change! (Parking meter) All in all, thank you yelp.

I don't think I was ever let down by this place. It's best to go on a nice sunny day so you can sit outside where it's cute and quiet with nice big trees. I always get the tilapia with rice, or substitute the rice with extra salad on a fat day. I love the creamy cilantro dressing. The tilapia is always fresh and flaky to the touch. I can eat the whole thing in less than 5 minutes. Add a chicken empanada to that and you're set. The guy at the register is really nice, I think he might be the owner. His charisma is contagious.

Went to Rio California for lunch today. Food was excellent and the personnel were gracious and prompt. We ate outside, which was great. I had the Jerk Chicken and my companion had the Jerk Chicken Burrito. Both were superb. Prices are very reasonable. We will be back. The Preservation Park area is worth a visit on its own.

This place is a little out of the way, but the atmosphere can't be beat. It's nestled in a corner of Preservation Park. You can eat outside on their deck to enjoy the view of the restored Victorian era homes, or you can eat inside and enjoy the friendly staff. The food itself is good value for what you pay. The sandwiches are pretty good and decently sized, though I think you could find similar quality sandwiches throughout the city. What stands out in my mind is the salad and the cilantro dressing that comes with it. Really what sets this place apart is its location. You'd think you have to pay at least $10 to eat at such a nice place, but $6-7 will do the trick!

Nice cute cafe with friendly staffs. Food is light and good. Very nice, quiet ambience. I was surprised to see it's actually in a courtyard (although it says Park, it's more like a circle plaza in a residential area). Nice big fountains in the center of the plaza, so when you sit at Rio's patio, you can have a fountain view. Will be back and recommend for a nice relaxing morning/lunch. Couple things: they don't open during the weekend. Business hour is only until 3pm.

*EXPERIENCE* = Whoa, time warp.. Victorian buildings galore. It's definitely a great area to have lunch. This is what all work day lunch experiences should be like! I wish I could remember the name of the guy that helped my friend and me.. Nai? I think he is the owner. Anyways, we walked away pleased that we made the decision to eat here. SERVICE = Wonderful.. the owner is engaging and helpful. He's got a really friendly disposition. FOOD = I went with the suggestion to try the grilled chicken with lemon butter, salad (and a yuUUMMy dressing), veggies and mashed potatoes. The chicken was a little salty for me, but it was still good. I also tried the Brazilian soda. It tastes like a ginger ale-apple cider concoction.. it's not too sweet like regular soda. We were told we should come back on Wednesday when they have more authentic Brazilian dishes to choose from.. Oh, they're only open from 8am -3pm.. not open on weekends. PAYMENT/PRICING = Visa/Mastercard/Cash.. My dish was $9.95. More than I'd like to spend for lunch; but I could've chosen any one of the reasonably priced sandwiches (just under $6 for majority). PARKING = We easily got metered (piss on the 7.5 min for $0.25) parking on 12th St before the freeway on a Friday at around 1pm.

I don't like spicy food because of the uncomfortable hotness that lingers in my mouth, but I really like their jerk chicken burrito, which has a bit of kick in it. And, who raves about cheese and rice in a burrito, but the cheese and rice combo in this one is awesomely delicious!! The burrito comes with tortilla chips and a salad with a really nice n' creamy cilantro dressing. Co-workers have had the shrimp and avocado salad, which is very fresh and the shrimp succulent. I think this is the only lunch place in Preservation Park, which is a hidden gem in downtown Oakland. The park would actually be nice for a small outdoor wedding. So Rio California is actually a gem within a gem. And the owner is always very nice. Once, after we waited longer than usual for our food (the place got busy after we ordered), he gave us our order of empanadas on the house. Awesome!

Everything that's great about Oakland. Delicious quesadillas. My only caution - if you're driving, bring quarters!! Getting change is challenging. (Can get it in the African American Museum.)

A while ago I was on a search for empanadas...and Yelp lead me to Rio California in Oakland's "Preservation Park." I had planned on journeyin on over here a while ago, and today, I just so happened to have an appointment in this area so YAY I was excited to get to try this famous lil random restaurant. This place closes at 3pm everyday. I finished my appointment at 2:45pm, and rushed into the little cafe -- at this time they were in the process of cleaning up and I could only order to go. No prob for me! So, I order 1 beef empanada out of their 3 available choices (beef, chicken, spinach). Cost: $3.90ish for something about half the size of a fist. ($6.50ish if you want it with a side salad). Kinda pricey! O_o How did it taste? Anti-climatic. =/. The empanada shell was pretty dry and not as fresh tasting as I had hoped. And though I did enjoy the filling -- packed with zesty ground meat, eggs, potatos, and peas. (Like...a samosa kinda!), it was lukewarm. I did appreciate the fresh tasting salsa that came with the snack, chill service, and uber cute ambiance though. Something tells me I need to give this place another chance if I'm in the area again..since I came near closing. Perhaps the food will be a lot fresher. Until then...3 stars for the empanada that left me satiated for the moment, but didn't wow me as much as I had expected.

This place is a hidden gem. It's a cute little cafe hidden in downtown Oakland. They have a little patio deck, but you can take your food to go and sit on the benches next to the water fountain. Great place to go enjoy lunch on a great day. The food was good; great portions and good taste. The price can be a little more than what you may want to spend on lunch. I think well worth the extra dollar or two, especially on a nice sunny day. The service is friendly. Definately will venture out here again.

This is a great place to go for lunch to get away from the city center. It's very close to the plaza but it seems like you are no longer in the city. I've eaten inside every time I've gone there but the large porch looks like a great place to eat on warm days. I typically get the empanada & salad combo. The skewers are also good. It's a good size lunch for a good price. The staff is also very friendly (which is refreshing).

Just got back from a great lunch. We sat on the patio in the sun, the patio is nestled behind some nice trees in Preservation Park. P.Park is a great little place, it's kind of like walking on a movie set. The cafe is a little hidden, since it's in the park, but it's definitely worth checking out. The food was great, freshly made, light but quite filling.

Fantastic fish tacos! Just a great place for lunch to get out of the hustle of downtown. Just a short walk away. Really enjoyed the patio sitting outside on a lovely day, and the service was spot on. That creamy cilantro salad dressing is to die for. Would come back in a heartbeat.

Amazing.Exactly the kind of place you'd want to take a guest from out of town for their first lunch in Oakland. I don't know what it would take for this place to keep later hours but I'd be here at least once a week if they did. Chicken Empanada, Chicken Croquetes (Brazillian Empanadas) and the cilantro sauce are the only things Ive had so far and each has blown my mind. Order extra cilantro sauce. You will not be disappointed.

This would be a great place to come if I worked closer to Preservation Park. The menu is varied and the setting is great. We came for lunch and sat outside. I had the roast pork special. The pork was a little tough, but the roasted root vegetables that came with it were outstanding. My friend had the beef empanada and said it was good. Lunch for two with two ice teas came to $20. There doesn't seem to be a way to leave a tip (no jar, no line on the credit slip), but we bussed our table as requested.

When I *remember* to have lunch, I have this little ongoing debate with myself: **************************************************Â**************************** Stomach: "Yikes! Its 1 o'clock already? No wonder im so growly" Mind: "Yes, well considering all you had this moring was your usual chai tea latte, I'm not surprised you're a but grumbly" Stomach: "I want something good and fresh and satisfying, and fairly inexpensive, and most importantly keeps me flat..." Mind: " 'Round here? Girl, this is Oakland, not Chicago. There isn't a FoodLife to be found for miles..." Stomach: ::sigh:: "You're right... I hate it when you're right." **************************************************Â**************************** Enter California Rio. Nestled among the GORGEOUS Victorians found in Preservation Park, this is my go-to "happy" place when i want to have a peaceful, delicious, and leisurely lunch. Its only open till 3pm, so the lunch time crowd (aka, those in the know) gets pretty heavy between peak hours of 12-1. I've eaten here a number of times, and have yet to be disappointed. The owner, usually manning the register, is really nice and remembers almost all his customers. Depending on how busy they are, they either bring your dishes to your table (which is usually outside on a nice day) or they call your order out and you pick it up from the register. You get your own untensils / napkins and bus your tables afterward. No matter how busy it gets, the owner often finds the time between rushes to go out among the tables and check up on his customers. Here's a break down of my top 5 faves: 1.) Feijoada-- The Brazilian national dish of pork chunks, sausage and beans stewed together and served with a side of rice, collard greens and coarse cassava flour (farofa). Guarenteed to fortify you on a cold day or put you in food coma on a hot one, its served every Wednesday. 2) Grilled Tilapia-- A tender cutlet of sweet white fish, served with grilled onions & fresh tomoato sauteed in a light yet creamy lemon-butter sauce . Rice and house salad on the side. Served every Friday, its my reason for observing Lent... 3) Empanada lunch-- For about the price of a happy meal, you get a savoury beef / chicken / or veggie empanada served with home made fresh salsa and a side salad topped with their yummy dressing. Its quick, portable and light / filling. Served eveveryday. 4.) Jerk Chicken-- Gernerous servings of tender, flavorful chicken rubbed to perfection. Served with a side of rice and salad, it passed my Jamacian friend's discriminate approval. 5.) Guarana Antartica-- Has its own category because its the BEST soda ever. Period.

This is the go-to spot for my friend and I when we want to get together for lunch. I take the Free B shuttle from Lake Merritt down to 12th Street, meet up with my friend, and we take a short walk over to this little hidden gem known as Preservation Park. Nice, clean, and quiet setting--a welcome break from he dirty hustle of downtown Oakland. I've been to this place for lunch about 4 or 5 times now, and I've ordered a different thing every visit. And everything has been fantastic. Fans of jerk chicken must give this place a try. Their sandwiches are also delicious, and the rice is great. And on top of great food, the service is phenomenal. Fast and thoughtful service. I love the setting. The outdoor patio is a great place to eat your lunch and chat with the sound of the fountain n the background. And if it's raining outside, they have indoor seating as well. Check this place out!

I've been here once and it's already a fav! Can't wait to go back. I went with a coworker and had the tilapia. Tiny little place in Preservation park, a hidden gem actually, but they have additional seating outdoor and the owner is a sweetheart. Really enjoyed the flavors of the food, especially the salad with the cilantro dressing. Prices were totally reasonable, and portions were fair -- I didn't leave hungry or overly-stuffed. Healthy meal and something different to eat in this area. Hopefully I'll make my return trip to Rio California soon!
(5)Matt H.
Really love Rio. Friendly owner and staff. Authentic Brazilian dishes. Not all the sandwiches are great (tuna with corn?), but the burrito is a hidden gem. Try coming when it's cold or rainy and there will be no line and no waiting.
(4)Ava C.
Too easy to have a 2 hour lunch here! Love sitting on the patio, enjoying the sun and cute surroundings. Doesn't feel like Oakland! Huge portions. The side salad is more of a full sized meal. I had the coxinhas which are not easy to find. They also have caju juice! Did you know that the cashew nut comes from a fruit that looks like a bell pepper? The fruit is very sweet, kind of like guava, but has its own taste. Very unique and this is the first place I've seen that has this outside of Brazil!

Rio is one of my go to spots in downtown Oakland. For under $9, you can get a large serving of chicken, rice and a side salad. The salad has a delicious dressing and the chicken is flavorful and tender. Typically, I have enough food to keep as a second meal. The owners are so sweet and always working hard. Also, food comes our quickly. Definitely recommend trying!

This is a cute lunch spot in a house, with a great porch and lots of outdoor seating. I had a good Greek salad (because -- as usual -- I was feeling vegetable-deprived), and my friends liked their empanada and tostada. I should have tried something more Brazilian, and I will next time. The staff is very friendly, and it feels like a real oasis: it's located in a park-like setting of historic Victorians (the ones you see when you exit 980 at 12th street), with a fountain, lots of shade, and a relaxed vibe. I felt my stress level reduce 10 levels inside of 10 minutes. This was a find!

My cohorts and I have been talking about coming here and I was sad that I wasn't able to go with them. So they agreed to go here again 2 days later. So here we are on a nice semi-sunny day. Behind the counter stood who I believe to be the owner. Nice guy shouting the orders to the kitchen right behind him as we order. Very friendly guy chatting with us as we decided what to order and pointed out the various specials. We sat outside and was brought utensils and napkins. I got the grilled talipia on a bed of salad, which was brought out to our table. The food was good and fresh. I really loved the cilantro dressing that was put on the salad. Even though we were only a few blocks away from the office, it was nice to get away. The outdoor patio is nice and pleasant and you can't even here the freeway because of the all the greenery. Service is quick, food good, great view .

I go here once in awhile during my lunch break. Try to get there early you can get a good seat the the patio. Last time I went here the owner (who is very friendly!) convinced me to try Feijoada. Glad he did; it tasted much better than I thought it would, and the meal itself was a very generously sized. Definitely looking forward to trying something new next time I go back.

An oasis of good food (portions and taste) amid victorian houses. Best in the sun!
(5)Isaac R.
This is a converted parlor in one of the Victorians in Preservation Park. A pleasant place for a meal, especially on a sunny day. Had the Jerk Chicken. Delicious, with just the right degree of spiciness (well, someone from the Caribbean might find it a little bland) and chewiness. If this were a Jamaican restaurant, I'd take points off for no mashed beans in the rice, but these guys earn a little slack, mainly for being really friendly.

Ney, the owner- has a great restaurant here! It's a perfect place for lunch. The most exciting part of this place is it's such a hidden treasure in this cute little neighborhood with a beautiful fountain outside. I lived in Oakland for two years 2007-2009 and never knew about it! He's been here since 1998! No way! How did I not know about it! Preservation Park sits right near the 980, 880 freeway off of Martin Luther King and 13th. I would have never guessed this nice area was there. It appears it may be gated off during night hours. Anyways, the restaurant is small, but has some beautiful outdoor seating spots. It was cold today so we sat inside, but it's so bright and happy inside. The service was awesome too, the owner is very personable and really wants your experience eating there to be great. He offered to make my friend and I another dish if we didn't like our food. Of course I did though! I got the Grilled Talapia and my friend got the Jerk Chicken. The sauce over the Talapia was very tasty, the capers adding an especially delicious touch. The prices are excellent as well, most ranging from $7-$10. Their cilantro salad dressing is really good too! Parking is a bit tight though, if you can't find any inside Preservation Park which only has about 15 cars then you must park on the street using the meters. Overall I give it a four because of it's decor, location, service, and good food. It's not amazing food, but it's really good. The environment really makes it complete! It's very peaceful and in a classy setting =)

I had the jerk chicken and it was VERY good. Such a lovely setting too, in the middle of Preservation Park. Even though it's out of the way, definitely will be going back to try more of the menu.
(4)Ian B.
The small, quaint setting was ideal; if you let yourself daydream a bit, you'd swear you were in San Diego. Giant palm trees and victorian homes, small lawns and a working fountain. The food was good, the price was right. I think we were served by the owner who made us feel welcome and was appreciative of our business. A downtown oasis within Oakland.
(4)Kimberly M.
I had an amazing lunch here last week. The casual lunch-time atmosphere led me to expect a regular business day sandwich shop - but no! This guy can cook! I had the Polenta with Chicken. I don't know, I guess I was expecting something a bit boring - maybe good comfort-food, but what I got was light-years better than I expected! The polenta was crunchy on the outside, flavorful-creamy on the inside - not boring. The chicken filet surprised me with being perfectly cooked - and finished with a sauce that reminded me of preserved lemons. The dish came with a fresh salad with a cilantro dressing that made my day. We also shared the Brazillian feijoada, with greens, garlic rice and yucca - loved it. Very good value! I'll be coming back!
(4)Kate S.
Great food! The jerk chicken burrito was delicious! Nice quiet spot in an area that looks like it doesn't belong in Oakland [old, pretty, clean, and well maintained Victorian houses in a semi-gated community (gives the feel of a gated and separate area from the rest of Oakland...like an oasis (if I wanted to be cheesy, I'd use that word)]. The people working at the restaurant seemed very nice. It's definitely worth a visit.
(4)Paolo D.
You go up to the counter order you food. The daily specials are posted above the register. Try them cause they are among the best in the menu. After your order just find a seat and wait. They are very quick in bring the food out. This place has the best veggie food. My friends got Jerk chickens, burrito, chicken empanada, tofu sandwich and I got veggie lasagna. Everything was just perfect. The best thing about this place is the people who work there and the owner, they are absolutely fantastic. They must truly enjoy their work. I mean the owner specially asked us how do we like the food...where do u get this kind of service? Btw I really like the cilantro dressing it's very light and full of flavor I don't know why people don't like it. Ask for it on the side and try it.

Excellent empanadas--not greasy. Salsa that comes with it is delcious. Beautiful outdoor seating in among lovely historic preservation Victorians. Highly recommended.
