Holy cowabunga! Huge cheese case, lovely meat case on the other side, several bulk spices, but the sandwich possibilities... endless! I went with a Reuben and am so glad I did. Sandwich-grilled on a dark rye, it was spectacular. Very nice tables outside for eating with some shade, on the street where there happened to be a farmer's market (today). I'll definitely be back!

You can choose a house specialty sandwich or custom make your own. They serve from a variety of quality meats and cheeses and the bread is always fresh. If you are not a fan of traffic or crowds, visit on a weekday. Fridays are difficult to maneuver through the foot traffic of the Urban Village Farmers Market. Quick note: the avocado spread is genius.

Ratto's has been around forever, I believe in this very location since the 1930's, so it's fitting that it's in "Old Oakland". It's an old style grocery store/deli with many types of wines, cheeses, spices, fresh olives, etc. Along with that they make sandwiches to order. The process is simple, grab an order form in the front, mark off what kind of bread and specific ingredients wanted in the sandwich. I ordered a Reuben and turkey and pesto sandwich. The portion sizes are on the small side. The taste was acceptable. However I don't feel the need to order another sandwich. The people that work at Ratto's are super nice and good salt of the earth type people. Despite the sandwich being average I must say its a institution worthy of being around forever and definitely worth checking out to see something that is a part of Oakland's history.

I walked over to RATTO'S after the Warriors Championship Parade for a bite to eat. Ratto's is an old school Italian deli and grocery store. I had the "Ocello," which was turkey pesto panini, and it was excellent! The foccacia was great, and was toasted - so while it tore up the roof of my mouth, I found it to be well worth it! The deli seemed to have several great options for sandwiches. Next time I'm in downtown Oakland - I'll definitely be back! 4.25 stars!

For a $10 custom sandwich, I was pretty disappointed with my meal. I can here for lunch as its super close to my work, and there were tens of people filling out sandwich orders, looking around, and waiting. I was excited for the prosciutto here since this place seemed to be an authentic Italian deli, but even after only adding a few condiments (tomatoes, bell peppers, onion, cheese, and mustard) I barely tasted any meat and they skimped out despite the extra dollar. The whole wheat bread was something anyone could find at a grocery store, and not even toasted. The ingredients were all pretty average. My friend's sandwich was just turkey and took 10 minutes longer than my order, and she felt sick after eating it. I would check out other lunch options around downtown before returning here.

High quality ingredients and fresh bread are what set a fast food sandwhich chain and a quality deli like Ratto's apart. You walk in and grab an order form. Next the options are endless, choose from the signature sandos that they offer or customize your own. I opted to create my own and resulted with a roast beef with condiments on great sourdough roll. The roast beef was quite delish and the sourdough roll was the icing on the sandwhich in this reference. You know when the roll is legit when it chips the roof of your mouth because it is that crunchy and has that distinct mild sour taste. For $7.00 not a bad deal for fresh ingredients. The sandwhich is a decent 6 inch size. The deli is also a market with a plethora of Italian meats, cheeses and wines.

Always leave here a happy camper. Tummy is so satisfied. Nice to eat outside as well. My sister had the Chicago Hot Italian Beef and she said it tasted like home so that's a biggie coming from her! Check this place out.

Nice! I'm tempted to describe this as hipster's supermarket, but that woudln't be doing it justice. It's a very old school market - I was told it's been there 120 years, which is definitely ancient history in Oakland terms. I wandered in here during the Friday farmer's market, looking for lunch options. I really like the wood decor, and decorations, and it's clear they're making an effort. I had a look at the sandwich selection sheet, but it was a bit overwhemling, and I wasn't quite in the mood to try something new that day. I think one of the sandwhiches was definitely vegan, and others could be easily modified since they make it all there on the spot. There is a big list out front which lists "V" by the sandwiches, but that clearly means vegetarian. I'd encourage them to improve this list and separate the vegan options. I did get sucked into trying some french red wine blends, which went down very well during a sunny Friday afternoon (actually, it had *just* gone past midday), and the server was very friendly and not pushy. They have some seating inside too, although I'd probably opt for outside since the weather is so great. I'll be back on a less busy day to check out their sandwiches for sure.

Ratto's is one of the reasons I love Old Oakland so much. Usually, I just go in and browse all the cool imports they have and pick up a candy or something. Today I finally got to try a sandwich. I wish my phone were capable of taking pictures because this, truly, looked like a perfect sandwich when I got it. Glossy sourdough roll filled with the perfect amount of mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions, and soppressata. Beautiful to behold and even better to eat. So good I was nodding my head and looking around to see if others were doing the same. I got a nod from the sandwich maker, but wasn't even embarrassed about my total enjoyment. I could really only eat half and I'm looking forward to having my other half as a late afternoon snack.

My go to sandwich place in downtown Oakland (when I'm not taking the easy route with Specialty's). The food is good and they're pretty quick given how busy it gets. They also have outside patio, but good luck getting a spot during lunch hours.

A great place to grab w sandwich! A wide variety of meats, cheeses, breads, etc. You can create your own sandwich or get one of the selections they have.

Great soup and sandwiches!! And looked like they had a robust selection of cheeses, olives and random items.

Ratto you did it again! We have a party/gallery at the end of each semester and the trays were perfect ! The small deli tray - says it feeds 10 but went much further when combined with other trays. Cheese tray - yum - cowgirl creamery, humbolt fog, it was wiped out! They added some quince paste on the medium tray - such a wonderful combination with the cheeses. I have to say this is so reasonably priced for such high quality ingredients! We also ordered the Mediteranian tray - Olives, Hummus (made by them - really good and flavorful) you can get dolma or veggies, and a herbed cheese mix that is wonderful! I think they use queso, and I can taste a little mint and thyme - the herbed cheese is especially good along side the hummus. Think about a Ratto's tray for your next party or pot luck - we are lucky to have this place and only in Oakland!! YAY!

I love this place! I remember when I first arrived in Oakland from Chicago friends said this was a must-know places. A good friend of mine turned 89 and we went for lunch yesterday. Place is great. There was a singer/pianist who was very talented and played from the standards while Millie and I had our celebratory lunch. The cup of mushroom soup was especially good. I forgot they have spices, wine and several deli items. They also have a night time performer. Great food and wonderful spot-on service. YaY! (Martin's daughter runs the place.)

I come here a lot to get sandwiches for lunch. I recommend the various veggie options, such as the hot veggie with eggplant, the hot tomato/mozzarella, the cold one with avocado, etc. I've never tried the sandwiches with meat actually. Once you figure out the ordering system it's fairly efficient. Always a crowd at lunch, and you can cram yourself in the front tables or there's usually space at the back. They also have a lot of random stuff imported from all over the place such as pastas, sauces, cookies, jams, spices, etc. They sell meat, and cheese too, in little picnic-sized portions. Semifreddi bread.

My favorite place downtown for sandwiches! Dont let the long line fool you, they get you in and out pretty fast. Thier homade pickles are yummy also and I love that I can always run in and get a sandwich on the fly from the display case when I am running late.

This update is from previous reviews. I still want someone from Ratto's to explain why they are PRE-DATING their prepared foods. It is a disservice to customers, but it gives their food a longer shelf live. I took a few pics today April 12th. How then could these items have been made and packaged on April 13th? I know it is only one day, but if someone gets sick....I'm just saying. I will happily change my rating back, once they stop doing this.

I tend to avoid looking at pictures on Yelp, so instead conjure up what I think a place will look like before I visit. This was one place that I got extremely wrong. Just a hop-skip-jump away from Oakland City Center, Ratto is adjacent to Swan's on a block of old (and architecturally interesting) buildings. I guess they call the area Old Oakland for a reason. Now, there's a stellar Italian deli not too far from me in LA (Bay Cities) that's packed to the gills with people awaiting their sandwiches, but also every italian product under the sun. So I guess I just thought that Ratto would be similar. I was a bit surprised when instead I found a big sandwich counter in the center, a few walls of product, and a lot of empty space (and plenty of places to sit). But since I was just jonesing for a sandwich, I wasn't phased by the disparity of the Ratto in my imagination and the Ratto in real life. I ordered the Jenny, which is at every other deli in the world, a Caprese sandwich. The bread was crusty without making me worry that I'd lose a tooth. The mozzarella was oh-so creamy. The tomatoes were totally fine. I liked that they used lettuce instead of basil (and opted to have no pesto on my 'wich) since for some reason I really dislike the combination of mozzarella & basil. Whatever, I'm a weirdo. The price was right - especially given the quality and size of the sandwich. After a disappointing sammy of the same variety at the nearby Specialty's, I'm glad I ventured a few blocks south to try this supposedly legendary place.

Ratto's is where I learned my first rule of lunch - if cops eat there, you should too. They serve meticulously assembled, fresh ingredients for nearly the same price as subway. There can be a wait, but they've got an assembly line-type arrangement that moves pretty quickly and includes having customers fill out their orders on paper, which I appreciate for the fact that it all but guarantees you'll get exactly what you order without having to repeat yourself or shout over crowds. They've also got a pretty great market grocery selection (pastas, cookies, olive oil etc.) that can be a little pricey, but fair considering it's almost all imported. And if you've ever made a sauce with genuine DOP San Marzano tomatoes, you'll know they're worth their weight in gold.

I frequent Ratto's for lunch every now and then, and I am never disappointed. They not only offer excellent sandwiches made with fresh ingredients, but a wide array of spices, olive oils, cheeses, wines and meats. If you are obsessed with Olive Oil, like me, and would bathe yourself in it if it was socially acceptable then I would recommend you try Ratto's homemade OO! Buon appetito!

Another fave lunch place walking distance form my work. Great sandwiches with at least three vegetarian pre-made options: Hummus, all vege and mozzarella/pesto. I prefer the pre-made sandwiches so I don't have to wait, but if you get there after 12:30, there are usually only a few left. You can have them make pretty much anything you want (deli style) or choose one of their signatures. It's a little pricey at around $8 a sandwich, but for the quality and size I think it's worth it. You can also get lots of premium grocery store items like gourmet pasta sauces and pasta. There is seating inside and outside, which frees up a bit after 1pm.

The selection of cheese and gourmet items looks great. I'd definitely go back if I needed to buy things for a special occasion. The staff was friendly and nice. I am taking two stars off because the little tub of paté I bought had expired on 9/28, a full week before I bought it! I didn't notice the expiration date until I got home and I am sure that it was not intentional on the part of the store. I did not go back to return it because a) it was too far and b) I couldn't find my receipt. Yes, I realize that many people think liver paté is gross, so it is probably not a high turnover item. However, I think that they could be more careful about what is out on the shelves.

Some of the best sammiches in Oakland! Lost of delicious imported cheeses and you can even get your sandwiches hot or cold. I love italian delis and this one is a classic.

This is a hard review to write as I recall the Ratto's of old. Ratto's *used* to be the most amazing culinary place on earth, a veritable global disneyland of Italian deli, remotely sourced items and gourmet fare. Not so much anymore... I was sad on a recent visit to see that the center deli counter that used to house amazing cheeses, meats and marinated salady items is home to processed meats, basic cheese and a few factory made salads. Blah! Basically you used to be able to pick a roll, stand in line hand your roll to the deli guy and he would put anything you wanted on it (prosciutto cotto, mortadella, marinated veggies, yummy gooey cheeses...etc) I guess the times and neighborhood have changed enough so that it caters to the 8 - 6 crowd who want nothing more than a subway sammie. :-( The spices are still on the wall - though they are more limited and I question the freshness now as the turnover seems lower. Bean bins, pasta boxes and such are still around - though much less variety. this is still a good place to check out for the history and some decent food. But for real Italian Deli - Genova is still my go to place!

Rattos has wines, cheeses, pastas, breads, olives, and lots of other goodies. was here only for the sammie. drill: find out checklist of your order(s). present it to the cashier. you will be called within 5-10 minutes when your sammie is ready. sampling: Italian combo(salami, mortadella, salami cotto, galantina & provolone, with red bell pepper spread, lettuce,, tomato & red onin on ciabatta 6.75) -wasn't outstanding but sure was satifying. huge sandwich. easily can be spread over 2 meals. mostly men in ties in line. crumbs -got a sammie during friday's farmers market. line wasn' so long. -specialty sammie list wasn't that long. -pricing is long for sammie as you like it. (itmeized). -too many choices....

This is one of the default places I go to around the office when I don't know what else to eat for lunch. Its safe and reliable but nothing to get too excited about. The sandwiches are pretty good, ingredients are fresh and prices are okay --about $7ish for a sandwich. My usual order is the smoked turkey with havarti cheese on foccacia or sweet roll. They also sell miscellaneous pre-packaged grocery items such as pastas, sauce, wine, snacks, chips etc., some are brands that you might not typically find at your grocery chain store like Safeway. BUT MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATES on these items before purchase. I grabbed the last bag of chips in the flavor I wanted but saw that it had already been expired for 3 weeks. I asked the cashier if there were more in the back and she told me that this one should still be good since it hasn't been opened yet. I was shocked that this place tried to sell me an expired food item. I mean if you don't have more or you're too lazy to check, just say so. Don't be spineless and try to sell it to me anyway. After I pointed out the expiration date again, she walked away and another person that wasn't as lazy went to get me another one. I'd probably just stick with the sandwiches from now on.

Write down what you want on a piece of paper - and they'll build you a masterpiece. This concept is often so simple - that at most places it turns into a disaster. But not at G.B Ratto. Step inside into a charming time warp, with old school cash registers, beaming sandwich artists and row and rows of gourmet bliss - and prepare to tell the skilled sandwich artists here exactly what you want. And you will get exactly that. G.B. Ratto has been a local staple for forever, and proudly brings imported cheese, olives, wine, pasta and more to the neighborhood with pride and class. With their to die-for - fresh mozzarella - which always makes me regret giving up dairy - to their thinly sliced superb meats - you can walk in here confident that any sandwich that you concoct will be executed with only the finest ingredients. And definitely try to swing by on a Friday - to not only enjoy their pleasant outdoor seating, but the hoppin' farmer's market next door - complete with live music and radiant faces - enjoying the summer Oakland sunshine. Trust.

I've tried the chicken pesto and tuna melt hot sandwiches, and they were both tasty, but not amazing. The sandwiches are made-to-order, and with quality fresh ingredients, but on the pricier side. Also, sometimes it takes a while for your order to be made.

Older corner grocery or store in downtown Oakland. Ordered a turkey on wheat with tomatoes, pickles, avocado, kalmata olives, and mustard. Good sandwich. Nice people. The girl was wearing gloves but touches the register and counter before making the food. She said she changed her gloves so that's good. In general seemed like the place could be a bit cleaner. Would probably go back though.

This place has great sandwiches. Jeremy Lin and I used to come here after his practices when he played for the Golden State Warriors. We would always look forward to these sandwiches. I usually got a turkey avocado. It was always a treat. The vibe is cool, the seating is limited, and they have meats, cheese, wines, and an assortment of rices, beans, and other foods. I have not been back since, but will re-visit this place again soon.

Solid old school deli sandwiches. Fill out a card to get almost any hot or cold combo you can think up. Waits are long from 12 - 1:30

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Ratto's before this. Ratto's was my first deli trying when I came to Oakland. They make awesome sandwiches. They have a huge selection of imported goods (wine, food, even clothes sometimes). Nice selection of postcards, chips, drinks, side items. Also they have a big selection of olives. Everything is fresh and made very fast. Not too expensive, half a sandwhich is 3.50. Nice area to sit and eat in the back or out front on the sidewalk. I love this place. The margerita is my favorite:)

Some people look forward to Fridays because they are the beginning of the weekend or the end of a long work week. I look forward to Fridays because that's the day Downtown Oakland holds its farmers market, which ultimately equates to the day I get to have a sandwich from G.B Ratto & Co.! G.B. Ratto & Co. International Grocers is an amazing place. Shelves upon shelves of hard to find Italian and European cuisine. Pasta here- Wine there. Cheeses you've never heard of- Meats you've always wanted to try. Olives and sausage and chocolates, Oh my! From obscure paintings on the wall to old time cash registers- this place is truly unique. The sandwiches are awesome! Just awesome! It's tricky at first, using a piece of paper and pencil to write down your order(near the entrance, don't be intimidated!) but the end sandwich is so divine! The meat is sliced fresh and the cheese is amazing! The soup is good too! I absolutely love this place and am such a fan!

I work in the neighborhood and go there from time to time. Their sandwiches are good, but they have jumped up in price a lot the last few years. What I notice the most is the attitude of the store. From Management on down, they have very poor customer service skills. No credit card charges for under $5.00 purchase - I mean really Rattos, like you're a tiny small business? At lunch it is totally mobbed, which is good for them, but it is quite annoying to go there. Everyone is stressed and rude.

I like restaurants with character. Some people think that means I like quirky, not normal type of restaurants. That's not necessarily true. Sometimes those kinds of restaurants are just plain weird, or the food is strange to the palate. Ratto's, however, has got character. Don't be fooled by the slightly dingy interior. Don't be put off by the order and pay process (which can seem confusing... quick hint: write your order on the piece of paper and make sure to include your name, put it on the counter as you walk to the left, complete your walking circuit until you end up at 2 o'clock around the deli counter, which is where you get your sandwich and pay for your order). The sandwiches are wonderful and delicious. People complain, "it's too small." My answer is, "O c'mon, then why are you eating here? Go to Oakland Chinatown 3 blocks away and pay $3 for a lot of starchy, oily goodness, and get full that way." A person doesn't come to Ratto's to get full. That's besides the point. That's using the wrong criteria, like saying Harry Potter's no good because the chapter title fonts kern slightly and have irregular baselines. Lame. Come to Ratto's for a good sandwich, crisp tasting cheese, and deli meat that has both texture and a gentle, pleasant flavor. It's a sandwich experience with character.

A Great place to get your Italian Sandwiches and groceries. A Classic italian deli. This is the way they used to do business back in the old old days 30's or so and i'm glad they still do so. their sandwiches are good, all made to order. You could still buy every little spices and all other knick knacks from all over the world BY THE POUND! They could also sell these items to you in ounces in you like. You grab an order paper, mark all the stuff you like in it including condiments, you give it to one of the Ladies on the counter & give your first name then you wait. you get your sandwich and pay for it, grab any seat and eat. A No nonsense place when your'e hungry. A must stop for me whenever i'm in Oakland. Highly Recommended.

Best sandwiches in Oakland. I can and sometimes eat here 5 days a week. Customer service is great, sandwiches are really good. I do suggest you phone your order in before you arrive. During lunch they are swamped, so if you phone ahead, your sandwich will be ready by the time you arrive.

If you want a good sandwich at an affordable price in Old Oakland go to GB Ratto & Co. When you first walk in you make your selection of what you want on the menu. Then you hand the form in at the counter. There is nice selection of deli meats, cheeses, fresh breads, small salads and grains. On Fridays Oakland has a farmers market on 9th streets, good day to people watch. They do weigh the amount of meat they put on the sandwich which I personally think they need just a few more pieces of deli meat on the sandwich to give it that wow factor but overall it's what you expect from a deli. The historic old building and out door sitting is also nice.

I eat at Ratto's often and the build-your-own italian combo is pretty good. But, yesterday I strayed out of the italian combo box and boy was I disappointed. I ordered the Reuben. Instead of making the sandwich to order like they normally would, the sandwich person pulled a pre-made Reuben wrapped in plastic wrap out of the refrigerator and put it on the sandwich press to toast. The result was entirely predictable. The bread was nice and toasted with great grill marks but the inside was still cold! Yuck. That's a totally unacceptable short-cut that I was really surprised to see happen at Ratto's

Jenn enjoyed the Jenny sandwich with fresh mozzarella (my fav!), pesto, tomato, and lettuce on a delicious baguette. This deli reminds me Cheese Shop, the deli I really enjoy here in San Diego...they always get you by having really cool, tasty food items for you to browse through while you are waiting for your sandwich. I ended up with an armful of stuff. Don't forget to write your name on the bottom of your order form or else they'll be shouting "Tuna sandwich NO NAME!!! Tuna Sandwich!" and then it will be embarrassing. Lol.

Ratto's is weird. The layout is weird, the service is erratic, the selection in the market is strange but occasionally useful. But weirdness can be forgiven, especially when it springs from 100 years of being a real, independent business in a part of Oakland that I'm sure hasn't always been friendly. I'm glad to work across the street from this place, even if it never quite has what I'm craving for a snack (lavash crackers and bean salad and chips notwithstanding - I prefer crossing Broadway to my haw flakes, dried sweet potato or ginger candy fix). And it's a bit of a wasteland in the morning, leaving the breakfast trade to Caffe 817 next door. But there's something reassuring about the lunchtime crowds filling the random tables in the back and the patio out front - these people are here for a reason. Here's the main thing - Ratto's sandwiches do, in fact, kick ass. Yes, the waits can be long and the process confusing. (Hint - fill out your checklist at the counter by the front door), give it to the person working at the corner counter and then relinquish control and impatience). But the Jenny is really good (mozzarella and pesto with lettuce instead of basil? why not?) and I've been more than satisfied with their rich and cheesy hot veggie sandwiches. Hummus sandwich is workable for vegans. I'd get sick of it if I ate here more than once or twice a month. The sandwiches are bigger and greasier than my usual little lunch but every once in a while, that's exactly what you want.

YUMMY! I took my hubby here for lunch today. We have never been before. Thanks to all the positive yelps we went and we loved it! Fresh ingredients make the sandwiches delicious. We parked across the street in a parking lot, paid $2 for 40 minutes and found a table outside, the sun was shining bright and warm, it was just a wonderful lunch! My hubby got the ham and swiss (hot). I got some sort of sliced beef with green peppers on a roll with au ju... haha is that how you spell it? It was delicious! We will be going back for sure! The two sandwiches, two Snapple's cost us $17.00. It was worth it!

I've been here twice, only for the freshly made sandwiches, and their sandwiches are quite good. They do have a good selection of international products. Maybe some hard to find stuff? I'm not sure. Lunch time is busy here so be prepared to wait. Or from what I have learned, do a phone order first.

Donde estas sandwich por Mimi!?!?!? Somehow, I ended up waiting for them to make me another sandwich since some one left with my customized sandwich. Didn't mind too much though- the extra wait wasn't that long at all actually. There was a guy playing the piano and I was still browsing their nice collection of cheese. Pretty good sandwich - they didn't pack on the meat like they would in a usual deli, but the cheese and bread were so tasty that I didn't miss the meat much anyways. Glad this place is one of few good joints opened over the weekend. Definitely gives me a reason to look forward to many wonderful Saturdays' afternoons now.

Aw, I love this place. I bought a bunch of yummy cheeses here for a party and everyone was like, "where did you get these amazing cheese?!" We also bought their house-made olive oil. Plus, you can get a yummy sandwich. What a cute little old-timey place.

This place is a really older, styled place. The "kitchen" is dead centered in the store. In the center, it is wrapped around in a rectangle with deli refrigerators with all kinds of meats and cheeses. Comparing all the other sandwich places i've been to, the price here is a little on the steeper side for what you get. 8 bucks gets you a traditional sub sandwich. Expect to spend about 20 mins here when you come during lunch time. Service isn't to fast. The whole system they have going on at this place isn't that great. Customers walk in, and fill out a papered order and then you place it next to a sign that says "order here." The "First come first serve" does not exist here. The orders gets piled and laid out and the worker grabs which ever one she pleases. The sandwich here is just like any other sandwich you may have eaten. There really isn't anything special about this place. They give you a decent amount of meat, and very little vegetables. Appearance 3.0 Price 3.0 Service 2.5 Food 3.0 (Out of 5)

This place is really fun. I feel like I take a stroll back in time here. I am not sure the ear- maybe before the 50s for sure. I like their options for soda pops- they have it all! They have olives and a barrel of the big dill pickles. Theres a fun option for create your own sandwich. Theres a piece of paper and you pick all the ingredients and hand it to the deli. There are a lot of options for hot or cold sandwiches. They also have a pre made section to the left hand side, where you can grab and go. There are a few tables in the back of the market and seating outside. They are not open late enough in my opinion and there have been several times I have gone and not been able to snag a table. If I want to get a sandwich here I usually get a grab and go Mediterranean, take it on my bike and go to Jack London Square to sit on the doc.

Awesome sandwiches freshly made to order! My personal favorite is a turkey on a soft roll with havarti, pesto, mayo, lettuce and tomatoe. Great selection of pastas, salads and meats!

I was introduced by a co-worker and was amazed. I love the Italian old school feel. Ordering is different but creative by writing down your order on a piece of paper & handing it to the staff. They have a lot of things to look at while you're waiting for your sandwich to be made, including a wide range of cheeses, art, pictures, etc. Highly recommended.

An Oakland treasure: an enduring business that has a great assortment of fine food, including, wine, cheese, meats, and a big spice section. Tables outside for eating are a nice addition. Worth a stop if you are poking around in Old Oakland. One thing that worries me is that the inefficient space utilization means they are not very well run; they could rearrange things and have a lot more stock.

best sandwiches freshly made to your specifics and they are delicious! Never had a bad experience in any way. Rattos also has a shop of artisan and specialty foods that i could window-shop forever (a little too pricey for me) unless for a special occasion. The staff has always been very friendly and fast on their toes - with lines out the door for lunch, how could ya not be? highly recommend!

UPDATE: Still so in love with this place! You can pick from their menu of sandwiches or build your own sandwich! I am drooling just looking at their website and the pictures that they have up. I can not wait until my sister gets out of class so that we can head over and grab some food! I love this place & their yummy sandwiches!! Cheap & delicious! SOOOOOOO GOOD, FRIENDLY, DELICIOUS, CHEAP, much better than any Subway or Quiznos!

This is the best place to get a sandwich in the downtown Oakland area. It has the look and feel of an old Italian deli. This place is packed during the weekday lunch rush but it is very quiet the rest of the time. I'm a fan and I will happily return.

I've been coming to Ratto's pretty much my whole life, my mom would take my sister and I there as a reward for dragging us to Farmer's Market in the mornings. Anyway, I've been there for all the changes, when they expanded and then shrank again, and have gone through various iterations. This summer I reconnected with Rattos, as I worked at the Courthouse just up the street. A touch pricey, and the service can get slow around the lunchtime rush, but it's VERY worth it. Every sandwich is handmade, the meat is sliced in the morning (I think), and it's just.... damn good.

Hadn't been to Rattos in awhile. Sorry I miss the the italian language. Spanish in a italian place just doesn't mix for me. Sandwiches are still good..so that's a plus.

I just went in there to buy some dried herbs. I got half an ounce of what smells like very good Italian blend. But I'm never going back. There were two people behind the counter making sandwiches. I was willing to wait my turn. But there was another woman there talking on the house phone. It seemed like a personal call, although that's only a guess. I put my little bag of labeled herbs on the scale. Over eight minutes later, she finally hung up. Then she went over to talk to one of the sandwich makers, which took that sandwich maker out of service for a couple of minutes. Then she meandered back, and as if my presence was a complete surprise, said, "oh, is this all you have?" I am invariably polite when someone gives me bad service. I would have patiently waited if she had simply asked the person on the phone to hold for a second and turned to me and said, "I'm sorry, I have to take this call." But no one even smiled at me... It's as if they thought "if I acknowledge him, I'll have to take care of him." One star. If I could have given a negative rating, I would have. From now on, shipping charges and all, I'm buying from Penzey's or stale supermarket herbs in plastic shakers.

I came here yesterday, and I'm completely disappointed with the sandwiches. It's nothing special with a tiny thin slice of meat. I didn't think it was worth the $6.75.

So I headed out to Oakland from SF today to get lunch at Ratto's. A friend of mine works nearby and per some other reviews that claim Ratto's is better than Genova (my all-time favorite Bay Area deli) I simply had to give it a try. I definitely wasn't disappointed. I got my standard fare of black forest ham and swiss on a seeded roll. While it was completely drenched in oil and vinegar (a little less next time, OK guys?) it was still a seriously good sandwich and I'll be back before long. It was also pretty cheap too -- at least compared to the prices I'm used to paying in SOMA. A funny thing happened to me when I was chatting up the lady behind the counter. I told her I was there because people had said it was better than Genova. She thought that was pretty amusing. She proceeded to tell me that she was the owner of Ratto's and the best sandwich she'd ever had was from Genova. She told me that Genova has a few specialty items that you can't find elsewhere like Mendocino Mustard. Quite an endorsement of Genova I'd say. Ratto's is a great all-around deli and while it wasn't able to knock off Genova as my top pick it definitely deserves to be on a short list of elite Bay Area delis. Give it a try if you love good sandwiches.

This is a downtown Oakland institution. It's about the most un-yuppie a foodie paradise could possibly be. It's been there for, like a hundred years or something, and you can tell as soon as you walk in. It's got soul, but the people working behind the counter have a refreshing, positive attitude. We need to support places like this. Their small wine selection is wonderful. I just buy stuff randomly, and have never been dissapointed.

Pretty good sandwiches.... Not quite as awesome as the Aroma cafe. You fill out the form & have them add what ever fixings you want . Good selection of imported items. Tables out on the sidwalk . Nice area of Old Oakland.

Definitely the best eatery I've been to in Oakland. Their Jamon Serrano was as good as I remember it in Spain, and not too pricy. The ordering system, like the sandwiches, seems honed by years of experience, you just fill out a card with whatever you want and then watch them make it. Aside from the excellent sandwiches, they have some great groceries to choose from. The Bulgarian Feta and bulk bottles of olive oil and balsamic are staples of my salads these days.

I'm reviewing their catering. I love the deli, so I thought I'd love their catering. I thought it was so-so. The good: the sandwiches were on fancy bread. The food came with all the necessary serving utensils and plates. The bad: First, every sandwich tasted the same. The ham, roast beef, turkey -- no difference in flavor simply because each sandwich is full of all the toppings and all the condiments. So the sandwiches were so-so. Second, the only individual chips they sell there are the large kettle chip bags for $1.25 each. And they don't sell individual cookies. So if you want to get the basic sandwich, chips, drink, & cookie combo, you're out of luck here. Third, the manager touted their potato salad. I could tell it was a special recipe that a lot of effort went into, but it was so-so. They mash the potatoes, so the only chunks you pick up with your fork are of the celery and spices. Finally, because my order was so large (75 people), they had to deliver it in two loads. But it took the deliverers 10 minutes between loads. So everyone at the conference got anxious and started lining up to eat. Only problem was that they hadn't brought the salad, plates, utensils, or drinks yet. So everyone just grabbed a 1/2 sandwich then went to sit down. I had SO much leftover food only because it took them so long to bring the 2nd load. Plus, the deliverers didn't help unwrap the food, and it was packaged WELL with cellophane, so it took another 10 min for me to unwrap everything to set it out. I was pretty pissed by that point. Then I got reprimanded by my superiors for ordering too much food. All in all, the whole experience was frustrating and the food was so-so.

I was really going to give 4 stars, but since Genova has 4.5 stars and Ratto's simply kicks the butt out of them, I bumped it up one star. My plan was going to be hit Ratto's again and try their sour french roll, cause the only issue I had with my sandwich was the Dutch Crunch was good, but didn't overwhelm me. But to keep it simple, I could sum up Ratto's in one line: for the first time I have eaten a sandwich where I could taste each ingredient, because each one was of high quality and was fresh. oh, and some extra love for stocking DOP canned tomatoes for a reasonable price! oh, and their ordering system, the best!

I didn't eat here -- though the sandwiches looked amazing. I just came to see if they had squid ink pasta -- and they did! I have been looking all over for squid ink pasta and not only did they have it, but it is imported from Italy and super-affordable. I am definitely coming back to buy more pasta and try a sandwich!

I suppose Ratto relies on its reputation as a very old establishment in Old Oakland in a historic building with a loyal customer base to get by, but I found this place lacking in a few areas. First, the slips that you have to fill out for sandwiches is a little confusing and as a first time customer, I didn't know where to leave it. They don't seem to make the best use of their shelf space. I ordered a half sandwich and bean soup and the soup was ENTIRELY watered down with maybe 6 beans in there and devoid of any flavor. The sandwiches do rock however. They also have tables and chairs outside on the sidewalk and it's a nice place to dine outside, but I would like to see improvements.

I adore Ratto's. I worked here as a teenager. I loved it then and I love it now. First of all, when I walk into Ratto's I feel like I've gone back in time. It immediately reminds me of the deli I frequented daily in a small town in Italy. The sandwiches are hands-down the best sandwiches in my world. Nothing compares. I like the ordering system, which is basically a checklist. My sandwich (in the 30-40 times I've been here) has never been anything but EXACTLY what I ordered and I make it pretty complicated. Occasionally service is a bit slow at lunch, but it's because people love it so much!! I see the same people in there every time I go. I've faxed my lunch order while leaving work and had my sammich waiting at the register for a quick in-and-out pick up every time. I think $6 for a great sandwich is reasonable. Shit. I'll pay $10 if the sandwich is great. Most (if not all) of the products they sell are imported. I love browsing the wine section to find something that I will probably never see again, whether it be from Italy, Spain or France. Besides having a variety of pastas, sauces, imported Italian tomatoes, chocolate, olive oils, vinegars and so much more, they also have bulk goods. You can buy your beans and spices by the ounce or pound. I find this especially helpful when I only need a pinch of Greek oregano (their's is the fabulous) for Greek salad, but don't want to spend $6 on a container. I luff this place. I hella do.

Damn good deli meats and sandwiches at this place, which is a pleasant surprise in the toilet known as Oakland. A coworker got the Reuben, which looked really good and something I will get next time for sure!

The sandwiches are GOOD. Very comparable to my favorite, Genova Deli, in Temescal; but I still have to give Genova the edge. The nice part about Rattos is the little sandwich sheet that you drop off at the counter. You don't have to worry about the surly italian guy giving you a hard time because you want salami with your honey turkey. The rest of the store is definitely a bit eclectic-- there's all sorts of dry goods from indian to Mediterranean to english. I ended up spending $19 on british oat crackers, a sandwich, chili-pepper-and-cherry chocolate, and some eggplant, pepper and garlic spread. Overall, its a slightly strange place, but I'll most certainly be back to sample some more of their specialty sandwiches along with dry goods from around the world. The plums soaked in a jar of brandy will be my next purchase.

Great sandwiches, and I always love their selection of sides. Especially the salads. Love their order system and how they can't get it wrong. It's always fun to peek at every item they have throughout the shop while waiting too.

Sometimes I need to pinch myself to remind me that this sandwich shop is in Oakland. It's really quite surprising that a place like this is buried in Old Oakland, adjacent to Oakland's Chinatown and not too far off from the City Center that features the starry likes of Panda Express, Quizno's, Popeye's and the ubiquitous (wait for it ...) Mr. Pizza Man! It shocks me that a place with so much old-world charm is located here. Ratto's is basically the antithesis of all of what the City Center offers: old-school charm, fresh quality products, and (understandably) higher prices. My expectations haven't been too high since moving our office to Oakland (from SF) and eating around the City Center. During my lunch break, I've oftentimes reminisced back when I was in grade school waiting in line while the stoic lunch ladies plop down soul-less cafeteria food on my compartmentalized foam plate with spork in tow. With all this said, quite possibly anything would be an upgrade ... this, however, has been a monumental upgrade. I ordered a Chicago-style Italian beef with roasted peppers and pickled onions. It hit the SPOT; perfectly balanced in every way: size, shape, flavors, proportions, ratio of ingredients, etc. While I am confused by the location of this gem, I feel fortunate that these type of institutions keep ticking (since 18 freakin 97)!

This was probably my first experience actually walking around, and eating in Oakland. Not that Oakland isn't nice... It's just not a usual city I would frequent. Anyway, I was in the area for work, and decided to try Ratto's. The deli selection was pretty good. There was cold cuts, meats, sausage, olives, cheeses, etc. They also had other italian specialities, varying from chocolates, imported sodas, candies, crackers, pastas, etc. They also had a wall of herbs to buy too! I could have spent hours just looking at everything! The sandwiches were delicious. My co-workers had the reuben. I had the "Jenny". It was mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, pesto, onions on a baguette. It was very, very good. Simple, but good. Overall, I liked this place and definitely would be back. The only drawback was the limited seating outside.

Been here twice. So far it's been great. I had a Hot Italian Beef sandwich the first time, which was pretty darn good. I could have been soaked a little more with Au Jus/Gravy, but it was still good. They play it safe by giving you the hot peppers on the side, which are pretty hot. This last Saturday I had the Reuben. The Corned Beef had great flavor and the sandwich was grilled just right. The other plus with the sandwich is the Russian Dressing. I have had many Reubens with Thousand Island, which is OK, but the Russian Dressing kicked it up a level. I'm not sure what the crowd is like during the week; both times I have gone were on Saturday's. Extremely light crowd on Saturday.

I heart Ratto's! yummy yummy sammiches! good specialty meat and cheese selection, fresh salads and italian groceries. They have a rockin bin spice selection, wine, breads, perfect place to stop before a picnic. Its one of my favorite places to meet up with my folks for lunch or folks that are in town visiting on Farmers Market Fridays!

I don't like the ordering system, and combined with too many people at the lunch hour rush, these two things make you not want to go through this all the time. My coworker convinced me to go through all the petty details one day, and I emerged, frustrated and much later than I had expected, with a mediocre at best sandwich. Since it is an Oakland institution and all, I thought I was just having a bad day overall and taking it out on Ratto's. So, I thought of them when I was asked to order lunch for an all day staff meeting. BAD IDEA. I called them in advance, knowing that catering isn't really in their repertoire, but I liked the fact that they are fresher and more unique than other sandwich shops in the area, and I wanted to make lunch a little more interesting for everyone. They said that wouldn't be a problem, they could deliver, etc., etc. I told them how many sandwiches and what types I needed. They said they'd deliver the next day to the location at the time I requested. Only 1/2 hour before I needed them, they told me they wouldn't deliver, and do I still want them made? Well, it's a little f'ing late to change delis at this point. So I ran over there, thinking I wouldn't need any help, there would be sandwiches in bags or something. Wrong again, they gave me huge trays and bags of rolls and all ingredients and toppings, NOT ASSEMBLED. I didn't order a buffet, people, I ordered sandwiches. Haven't bought a sandwich from them since, and I don't plan on going back, even though I work nearby.

I highly enjoy this place but it is definitely not my favorite deli around. For one the ordering system gave me anxiety attacks the first time I came in. I love being able to craft my own sandwich on a piece of paper, I do not love that the box to place it in is hidden. Another things is price. I'm in downtown Oakland 3 days a week at unpaid internship, when I go buy a sandwich I'm looking at affordability, these sandwiches are often pretty pricey but not that big. But, I would rather pay that extra dollar than run to Subway and sit in the city center. All in all delicious sandwiches and awesome cheese varieties that I wish I could obtain.

Their sandwiches are delicious, although their potato salad could be improved. They have all kinds of delicious deli case items (meat, cheese, olives) you can buy and all sorts of interesting international food you can buy, but I go for lunch and get a sandwich. My favorite is: baguette smoked turkey salami mayo tomato harvatti cheese lettuce very fresh and fairly fast unless you go right during lunch rush.

Top Noch Quality Deli! If you are looking for a good, not great quality sandwhich, then Rattos is the place for you. A bit expensive and Never to during the lunch rush! But I guess you get what you pay for and good things come to those that wait. =) I'd recommend it any day!

Ratto's is one of those establishments that I really really really wish I could give 5 stars to but logic kicks in and I can only muster up a measly 3 1/2 stars (I know there are no 1/2's, it's ranked in my head). Things going for it. It's in Old Oakland, an area that's rejuvenating itself. I love the old fashioned feel to the place. It's such a nice area to hang out during a lazy Sat morning. Things not going for it-- the sandwiches. I've tried a few and I still haven't found one that I am willing to consume in it's entirety. =o( I did buy a kick butt bottle of limoncello there a while back. However, they don't have in stock anymore. =o( The owner doesn't even know the name of the label. =o( =o( Final answer: I'm a regular customer when in the area.

This SoCal kid ventured to the deep north and arrived in the wonderful city that is Old Oakland. My friend, an Oakland local suggested to hit up this establishment for sandwiches and boy was I satisfied. I loved how they have customers fill out a checkoff list to create your very own sandwich. it definitely makes it a lot more efficient because it weeds out the slower people who have trouble making simple decisions. I elected on the tuna on sourdough bread with Dijon mustard, lettuce, and tomatoes. The reasons why I gave this place 3 stars is because 1. the sourdough was a bit hard and potentially dangerous for consumption because it sure cut the roof of my mouth causing a little bleeding. 2. With every bite I took, the contents spewed out from every corner of the sandwich. Making me put in extra duty to scoop them up from the wrapper. Other than that, it was good. Maybe I should go with a different choice of bread next time. Salutations!

Ratto's is probably the best place for a casual lunch in downtown Oakland. It's not the best deli in the bay area by any stretch of the imagination -- Molinari's in North Beach serves better sandwiches without question -- but it's still quite good. The ingredients are fresh, their ordering system is efficient, and they have tons of other products available on the shelves. It's a bummer that they don't have much seating, but I usually just bring my food back to the office anyway, so it's not a big deal. We have also purchased cheese platters, etc. for office parties and they were really popular.

Ummm, goodie goodie... I'm giving Ratto's four stars, as I've not been there in a while for some reason, and can't really tell you why... I don't know myself... Perhpas its not as welcoming as it could be? Nah.... Its the bomb. Here's my four stars!

YUM! LOVE the sandwiches and the little Italian shop style. I also love that you write your order on the checklist, so they never mess it up. It's always exactly what you want without giving a weird confusing order. You can also call in / fax in for convenience. I'm hoping for/waiting fo online ordering for short lunch breaks/convenience!!

I would give it 3 and a half stars, for my experience, but drop it to 3 for the experience of those I tried this place with. I was very happy with my sandwich, which was a hot turkey, cheese, tomato and pesto sandwich on grilled foccacia. It was hot, cheese was melty, and had a reasonable amount of meat. Only downside was the bread was a lot bigger than the fixin's in the middle, so the outer edges were just pesto and a little cheese. I got the soup of the day, which they called "creamy clam chowder". It was decent, but nothing special and certainly not in the least bit creamy. If they had it next time, I wouldn't order it again. My coworker ran into a bit of what other reviewers mentioned - he ordered his roast beef sandwich with the works, plus an additional $1.50 for extra meat. He ended up with 2 slices of roast beef in his sandwich. That's not much "extra". I went there on a Friday for lunch, and the farmer's market was going on outside. Sitting outside in the sun people-watching the market goers and soaking in the atmosphere was nice. Always a relaxing way to spend those fleeting moments outside my cube.

I've been going to Ratto's since the late '80s. They've changed hands and downsized a bit, but still have a fab assortment of European goodies. Their olive selection is nothing sort of amazing, and much less expensive than many other places. And the wall o' spices! Bulk spices are hard to find in Oakland (and boo to the Alameda Healthy Market for not carrying them), and Ratto's has a great assortment. Go Rattos!

Very delicious, reasonable pricing, adorable setting, easy ordering, and offers some grocery items (cheese, wines, bulk spices, pastas, etc.). I've been here a few times, very satisfied each time (except with the mushed avacado they use - never understood that, use slices!). They offer you a "build it yourself" check-list menu, which I enjoy.

Oh wow, I somehow forgot to review this place?!?!? I eat here all the time, short walk from my office. Very good sandwiches, quality. Pretty easy to order, they have this fill in the bubble system even an idiot can't mess up. The only downfall to this place is the wait! It tends to get busy as all shit around 12:20ish or so. A sandwich runs about $5.95 which is far greater than any Subway crap. I wish they hooked up more meat and cheese though. Trust me, eat here people. And if you go on a Friday there is a Farmers Market going down outside with live music! DO IT!

I've been meaning to review this place for forever! It's amazing. Working a few blocks away this summer, I got addicted. Ratto's is everything I would look for in a deli. It might even rival my childhood favorite of Lucca's (in Castro Valley). Everything seems to be of such a high quality - the meats, the bread, the cheese - and all of the sides including the Greek salad. The business of this place at lunchtime should speak for itself. Also, the place has a cute Old Oakland flair and it's nice to see that area so bustling during that time of day :)

I Love Rattos! I work around the block and love grabbing lunch from rattos. the sandwiches great. they have any type of bread you want (from white to wheat sliced to wheat roll to dutch roll) with great deli meats and awesome condiments. My favorite is "the jenny"; pesto, with mozzarella, spinach, etc. Along with the awesome sandwiches they have a great range of wine, speciality food and candies. Rattos can take a while. If you are in a hurry make sure you call ahead with you order. If you place your order there it takes at least 15mins to get your sandwhich. enjoy

I confess - I have never eaten a custom sammich from here for the following reasons: a) I prefer to binge on bread secretly... the way that hollow-cheeked supermodels gorge on Nilla Wafers dipped in crack and gallons of Haagen-Dazs between cover shots of Japanese and Italian Vogue. In my memoirs, I'll coyly hint that I can down 2 banh mi sammies in a single sitting... but I don't like to be seen doing it in public. b) I usually swing by here as an afterthought on Fridays, laden with bags of crisp Fuji apples, gorgeous bunches of dino kale, fresh cut flowers, a few pounds of clementines and 2 dozen eggs. After hitting the Farmer's Market, I simply can't maneuver through the throngs of early lunch patrons spilling out onto the sidewalk. After taking a couple of kidney shots from the hordes of micro-Asian grannies who determined that I was standing between them and hand-picking the choicest boiled peanuts, I tend to get slightly agoraphobic; they're so frail looking, but ornery... and not at all afraid to run over your feet with their wheeled shopping baskets... I walk by Ratto's - lingering for just a moment, before I retreat to my safe place and can sort through my produce in peace. c) I am a condiment whore. Can you imagine Amy Winehouse turning a blind eye to a big, fat, rail of coke? In like fashion, I am helpless in the presence of fleur de sel, (I just don't snort it) truffle oil, balsalmic vinegar, ventresca in olive oil and... handcrafted Moroccan slippers. Whaaa? They're really adorable... even though I can't eat them. By the time I reach the counter, I've already emptied my pockets of cash, grabbed some fleur de sel caramels, a handful of licorice pastilles, a Violet Crumble bar and levereged my next credit card bill against The Cadet's 529 Plan. Poor thing will end up at a junior college, even though I've been funding the thing since he was a zygote! There you go; 3 reasons why I can't tell you a damn thing about the sandwiches... But handfuls of delightful reasons that I haven't gotten to 'em yet. Make Sandwiches, Not War!

I sometimes have meetings in downtown Oakland and it was one of these meetings that led me to try Ratto's for the first time. We were given the sandwich order forms at the meeting, and when we headed down to pick 'em up, there were all dozen of them ready and waiting. Quite tasty. The deli itself has a comfortable old-timey feel (I've since heard it's been around for generations) and offers some interesting groceries and gift items. I think the only thing that I missed was interaction with the employees. The order form is an efficient system, but I like being able to explain my requests or ask questions. I wouldn't hesitate to return if I was in the area and hungry for a sandwich, but with Genova deli only a few blocks from my home, it will not take the prize for my favorite deli in Oakland.

Okay, so I have been in the East Bay my whole life and can't figure out how I have missed this place for this many years. I have actually eaten at every surrounding restaurant, even the one next door!!! Went today to meet a friend and had one of the best sammies ever! I am a die hard Genova fan since childhood, but Ratto's gives them a major run for thier money. I love the cheeses and bulk spices. We sat outside in the sun and it was great! Plus they make custom half sanwiches so I am not forced to over eat! No need to drive all the way to Genova anymore. I can walk here from the office(not in these shoes)!

So far I've had: a decent reuben, pickles that probably are authentic but too sour for me (I'm an east coast dill pickle aficionado, and there's an awesome guy at the Friday Oakland farmer's market with excellent spring pickles), a greek salad (quite nice), provence-style cured olives (great), and some of their various grocery items (goat cheese, salume, mustard, the like). Ratto is a nice spot for interesting groceries and a sandwich. Glad to have it in the neighborhood.

This is still a great place for your cooking, wine and eating needs. Bulk spices, choice cheeses and good deli food. A favorite for the staff of the court system and law enforcement. A great staff courteous and friendly a must place to try when in Oakland. A block or so from the China town. Parking on street easy for now lots near by.

I don't go to Ratto's as nearly as often as I used to. In the 70s it was one of my regular hangouts, the place I'd go to for bulk pasta and interesting groceries. I remember standing in line and hearing the owner speak 5 or 6 different languages to people as the walked in. It was unspeakably cool. Then more places opened closer to me where I could pick up the stuff I used to go to Ratto's for. My last time there was a couple of years ago and it was owned by someone else, maybe the previous owner's daughter. It was a little less cluttered, a little better organized maybe, but less soulful. I missed the old way. It still had great stuff and maybe multiple languages are still spoken.

A few years later, and I'm still not sold on Ratto's. Good sandwiches but overpriced about a dollar or two.

This is what a deli was meant to be! Delicious sandwiches custom built for you as you wait. Amazing selection of meats and cheeses...but the bread... ohhhhhhhhhhhh the bread. Any vareity you want from dutch crunch to the amazing Acme baguette. The sandwiches alone would be enough to make you want to go...but wait, there's more! They also have a suprisingly impressive cheese selection - not due to quantity but quality. Delicious european cheeses as well as Cow Girl from time to time. And to cap it off pretty amazing olives as well. The vibe is old school for sure - which probably adds something to it. But overall it is well run, brilliantly executed and really the perfect "on the go" lunch place in Oakland.

Holy crap, I have never been to this place, but my office ordered a raft of sandwiches for delivery yesterday. I had mortadella and Toscan salami with provolone, vinagrette and olive oil and spicy mustard with tomato, lettuce and pickles on sliced French bread and it was freakin' delicious. I might walk down there for lunch again today. I can also say that we ordered like 30 individual sandwiches and every single one was made correctly to order and labeled with our names, which is excellent.

Very good deli. Meat is really good and fresh. I have had their rueben which is awesome and their turkey avocado which also was good. Make sure you say light dressing, because they will overload you with mayo. they are not afraid to use heavy doses. I also had a cup of their lentil soup which was delicious. I work in oakland, and I can tell this will become a new favorite lunch spot of mine.

Fresh-ness is the first thing that comes to mind when writing a review for this place. Its oh so fresh, oh so clean. a nice find in the gem known as Old Oakland. You can customize ur own sandwiches with a crapload of different options (God Bless Russia for Russian Dressing and other stuff) or you can order one of their sig sandiwches. The best Turkey Avocado ive ever had. Only draw back is its a tad pricey... Sandiwch and chips and drink could run you $15. I think its 4th generation owned. Theyre doin somethin right... my new favorite deli.

Ratto's is delightful. Fresh, made-to-order sandwiches, gourmet grocery shopping and some outdoor seating. This is my favorite place for lunch in downtown Oakland for all these reasons. The people who work here are nice -- and will take orders over the phone or in advance. Great gourmet grocery selection including hard to find spices, pastas, various oils (spotted hazelnut today), nice olives & all sorts of sweet treats. I will admit to always ordering the same sandwich (1/2 order, dutch crunch, cheese, yellow mustard, lettuce, tomato, sun dried tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, pepperoncini, roasted red peppers & vinaigrette) so I can't cop to how good their other offerings are. Line can get long at lunch, so beware if you hit it right at lunch hour.

I was told by my boss this place makes good sandwiches. So I head down with a cohort and we get to this place around 2:00 to grab some take out. We completely missed the sign explaining how to order, so we walked all the way around and make it back to the front of the store. AH - DIRECTIONS! So you fill out a form yes on mayo, mustard, lettuce, etc, now the meats; I got roast beef, add some provolone cheese, I'm in heaven. I head back with my sandwich and next thing you know, a bunch of my co-workers go the next day. It was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, but I was also straving. So what can I say? YES I would go back if not for the sandwiches then for their large selection of cheese. They had other interesting items I will have to inspect next time. Trip II: Sandwich: Mayo, Dijon mustard, lettuce, onions, provolone cheese, pepercino, and salami. It was excellent!

Average deli. Hit or miss. Its convenient close to my work, but nothing spectacular about their sandwiches. I kinda don't like how you can't customize their hot sandwiches or else I would get them more.

I miss this place! When I use to work in Oakland I would walk a couple blocks to enjoy the sandwiches made with TLC at Ratto's! Although downtown / chinatown Oakland has your abundance of good cheap eats, Ratto's is the place if you want a flavorful sandwich and a cup of soup! For first timers this place is a bit confusing. You have to pick up a pen and order form RIGHT when you walk through the door. You go about checking off the type of bread, Cheese, Meats, Condiments you want on your sandwich. Or you could choose from their already pre-fixed sandwiches. Once you made your selection, you drop off the form to the friendly sandwich artisans. If you're in a rush then I suggest you get there early. Lines get super long and you'll be waiting. But if you don't mind waiting you could walk around the store and check out the vast selection of wines, oils, and snacks.

Ratto's is busy busy at lunchtime, but luckily, if I take a lunch, it's usually a late one. At 2:30pm the lunchtime crowds are gone. I usually go for cheese and some bulk beans and lentils and pick up a sandwich too. Ratto's has a gargantuan amount of choices when it comes to sandwiches. When you enter, pick up a sandwich slip at the front table, mark off your choices, and hand it to the nice lady behind the counter. The first time I went I was overwhelmed by the choices and selected the "Jenny": fresh mozzarella, fresh pesto spread, ripe tomatoes, thinly sliced onion, crisp romaine on a perfect, fresh baguette. It was delicious. My favorite sandwich, by, far is my own creation, which is a baguette with pesto, prosciutto, onion and havarti. I love to wander around the shop and buy lots of herbs and bulk items I didn't realize I desperately needed while I wait for my sandwich to be made.

Roast beef, cheedar, pickles, onions, mayo on ciabatta. Rattos has single-handedly kept me from calling into work comatose for the past 3 months. Whenever i'm feeling a bit down and hypoglycemic, the promise of their kick ass sandwiches cheers me and gets my blood sugar going to get me through the day. perfect perfect perfect.

Yeah, I know it's an Oakland institution and all but I've never been too impressed with the sandwiches. The rest of the store is pretty cool though. I like all the imported European goods and rare chocolates, so definite *big-ups* for that. Although the sandwiches were always filling, they were usually disappointing. Maybe because most of the sandwich is made of bread with disproportionate amounts of meat and cheese. Everyone else in the area usally has the place in mind for lunch so that's always a pain to deal with too. Perhaps if this place were smaller with less of a wait and a better meat-to-bread ratio, I'd give it more stars. Maybe on my next visit to old Oakland, i'll change my mind.

I just now saw a picture of a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich and immediately, my memory zipped to Ratto's! Almost 20 years ago, I met a friend for lunch at Ratto's and the thought of a grilled mozzarella cheese sandwich was such a novelty.....and truly delicious. My mouth still waters thinking of that sandwich. I need to visit this place more often than a few times each decade! This visit to Ratto's was also my first experience which showed me that Oakland has great gems. This might have been the grocery store that made we want more variety than what a grocery store chain and suburban strip mall can offer.

I dig this place for lunch in particular. Great place to grab a custom sandwich and enjoy downtown Oakland. It's hard to find a sidewalk table, but if you can snag one you're lucky. Not only are the sandwhichs good here, but there is a fine selection of other deli goodies. I always enjoy browsing the racks while waiting for my food.

Maybe it's unfair, but I can't help but compare Ratto's to Genova, the Italian deli in my old North Oakland 'hood. Genova: pull your number from an antique number-pulling machine, then have a face-to-face discussion with your sandwich-maker. Ratto's: Pick up a card, fill in your selection (somewhat limited, by Genova standards), then drop in in a pile where someone will ostensibly make your order come true. I'm sure it makes for an extremely efficient work lunch, but the impersonality kind of got to me. The place was a solid three-star for our little Friday picnic excursion to Mandela Parkway... until I tasted the sandwich. Yep, that prosciutto/mozz combo (a write-in) worked as well as any Genova creation, even though I didn't get to schmooze with the maker. And, they have bulk herbs for sale. Nice.

I'd probably give this place 3.5 stars, but I'll round up because I they give out free samples of cheese. Yum. I only take place in their sandwich menu simply because I really like the the fact that we can build our own sandwiches. The ingredients are fresh and the service is prompt, unless you are unfortunate enough to arrive at the same time a conference lets out from the neighboring convention center. Even then, they do a pretty good job about pumping out those sandwiches in a timely manner. I only have a few complaints: a) the limited street parking, b) the limited indoor/outdoor seating and c) sometimes they'll run out of random, if not simple items such as wheat bread or bbq chips. Let me be clear: none of these elements are any reason to avoid Ratto's, just be aware so you're not heartbroken when you're forced to chose sourdough vs. wheat bread and sour cream and onion chips vs. bbq. Oh, the horror.

Good sandwiches, but waaay overpriced. $8 for a veggie sandwich. Come on people. The people are also jerks (actually, today the people were jerks. It's good to be precise) - rude, condescending, and obnoxious. Combined with the high price tags and small sandwiches, the crappy service would definately be enough to make me write off the place entirely if it weren't the only deli by my office (although it still might be enough; crappy service gets on my nerves).

    (2)
  • Nathan M.

Had The Italian. The grade of meats used seemed quite fine and the blend of flavors was articulated subtly. The salami and red bell pepper spread were quite tasty. It was a little pricey, with a sandwich and soda ringing in at just shy of $10, but it is definitely worth it for the occasional high quality deli hankering.

Consistently fresh sandwiches, good veggie options, good meat options, and can pick up some imported groceries & a loaf of Semifreddi's bread on the way out. The prices are fair and the selection is good. The soups I tried have been good as well. Used to come all the time on Friday when there is Farmer's market outside and it is just lovely.

This deli/market in Old Oakland has an old-world charm to it that I like. The first time I came here with some friends and waited forever for our sandwiches because it was packed. Maybe it's bc the weather is crappier today, but I went in at 12:15 and no wait at all. But by the time I got my sandwich and left there were people lining up. A lot of people are on the phone taking orders from friends and ordering multiple sandwiches at once, which can get annoying. So it works like this: you walk in, and there are order sheets and pens where you fill out what kind of pre-selected special sandwiches you want (we've tried the Jenny and the classic veggie, both yummy) or you can make up your own, choosing your bread (wide selection ranging from dutch crunch, ciabatta, whole wheat, roll, baguette, etc), a meat (turkey/pastrami/roast beef/prociutto/ham/etc), cheese, extras, and special extras (avocados, pesto, spreads, sun dried tomatoes)....The Jenny is fresh mozzerella, tomatoes, lettuce, and pesto on baguette i believe. Classic veggies loads on the avocados, lettuce, tomatoes, and pepperocinis (my favorite sandwich condiments!)... So as you see, the selection is pretty good and possibilities are endless. Prices are fair, whole sandwiches are $5.95 (tax included), half sandwiches are $3.95. You can also pair your half sandwich with their special soup of the day for $5.95 (haven't tried their soups yet). Aside from their sandwiches and deli counter (where you can get deli meats, sausages, and a big variety of cheese) they also have some nice grocery items if you need to grab it for dinner. Very interesting selection of chocolates and sweets, and drinks, too. A new lunch staple for me.

I love this place! It's a great place to get hot or cold sandwiches/half sandwiches made to order, and a soup that changes daily. They also carry a very good selection of imported European food items which includes various pastas, beans, wines, preserves, sweets, etc. etc. etc. One of my favorite sections of this place is their big fridge that is always full of so many kinds of various high-quality cheeses and olives. The only reason I am not giving them a 5, is because the their selection of grocery items changes every few weeks, and as such they don't always have some of my favorite cheeses / candies.

  • Amelia J.

I could live on sandwiches (Ok, and burritos) and Ratto's is my favorite place in the East Bay to get them, especially on a quiet weekend afternoon when they have wine and cheese samples... I love the fact you write down your exact order, so there is no chance to get the order wrong in translation. They have an amazing selection of bread, cheese and meats and I love any place that offers hummus as a spread. They have just added panini to their menu, which I have yet to try. Adding to the appeal of this place is its history, having been a market in this location for over a hundred years. That ready made 'wich from Starbucks ain't got nothing on that!

One slice of roast beef. Need I say more? My entire seven dollar sandwich had one single thin slice of roast beef on it!! I am seriously appalled. I have never had such a miserable sandwich in fourteen years in the bay area. Or anywhere else for that matter. And stupid me, it's the second time I've eaten here! It's a cute little hippie-yuppie deli and all. The counter folks working were pleasant enough. It just too bad the sandwiches couldn't feed a family of flies... Seriously, I don't get the other reviews. I know that dining in this area is pretty limited, but I there is no good reason to give this place your business. The only real cost in making a sandwich is the meat. When they don't give you any, well...it's great for profits, but stinks for the suckers who eat here.

We used to go here when I was a kid to find exotic imported foods and now I find myself shopping here for staples. The best thing is the bulk stuff in the back-- all kinds of beans, grains, flours. It's not so easy to find this stuff anymore because it seems like there are less Middle eastern stores than there was a few years ago. I found bulk semolina flour (yay!). Before Whole Foods opened I was having a hard time finding tahini. They also sell olive oil. Four stars because I remember it was better when I was a kid. They've kind of streamlined their product selection.

Ratto's is probably the best place to grab a quick sandwich in downtown Oakland (although I believe it's technically located in "Old Oakland.") The sandwiches are consistently good, the deli meat is of high quality (for Oakland) and the service is friendly. I would also like to compliment the HR person at this deli shop because the ladies making the sandwiches are very cute. Bravo! Ratto's also sells wine, cheese and other delicacies from Italy, but I found that if you stick with just buying sandwiches you won't be disappointed. I don't recommend purchasing wine here because I think it's mediocre and the descriptions provided are off-the-mark.

You've gotta love a deli that's well over 100 years old. Not only do they serve up great sandwiches, they have great Italian sandwiches, too, which is a rarity. They also carry all sorts of food products from obscure dry pasta shapes to honey straws.

What a cool place, definitely an Oakland treasure. Great wine deals too. I love the feel, and am nuts about the chicago beef sandwich. Especially the pepper topping that comes with it, TRY THIS SANDWICH!! It's also cool to add a little cheese and a fun bottled soda.

Ratto's has been in business since 1897!? Wow.. So, 100+ years ago people were ordering sandwiches at Ratto's, probably at lunch time. All those people are now ghosts. Here in the 21st Century, my co-workers and I fill out sandwich order cards at Ratto's at least once a week. On my last 2 visits I've checked the "Prosciutto" box. Birth, School, Work, Death.

Why don't more Oakland-Berkeley residents know about this fantastic delicatessen? Ratto's has a long history and has one of the smartest looking vintage storefront signs around. The place is hopping during weekday lunch hours but quite sleepy on Saturdays, as is much of this downtown Oakland neighborhood. My first foray into the place was on a weekday. The sandwich order tracking "system" was something to behold amidst the lunchtime bustle. Fill out your sandwich card and, as I was advised by the person behind me since there were no immediate guidelines to follow, place it on the counter in no particular sequence...just place it on the counter. On top of someone else's order, to the right of it, to the left of it. Whatever. Just place it on the counter, hope it gets picked up by capable hands and wait for your name to be called. And it will be. Eventually, if they can read your writing. And such good stuff. The artichoke pesto Havarti, The avocado Jack, "the Jenny" (fresh mozzarella, tomato, pesto)...these could easily be every-weekend sandwiches, especially at the very reasonable prices. The cheese is the real deal, fresh from their case. An assortment of locally-baked bread is available. Try the Avocado Jack on the seeded baguette. Nice selection of fresh olives. Imported jams, shortbread cookies and other canned and jarred goods line the walls. Intriguing spices can be purchased bulk as can a variety of dried beans which you can scoop from these cool wooden vintage containers in the dine-in area, back of the store. This place just shines. Love it.

QUALITY you can't go wrong w/ this place - there's a bunch of places that have good sandwiches.... but something about the quality here, and the for the price, its definately a good deal. Their chips are amazing - and you gotta love the fact that you're supporting the small buisness types

Great deli sandwiches and a full variety of imported foodstuffs. On Friday's there is a street fair and you'll have to really be a good parking-spot hunter. I suggest visting 11:30am before the crowd or after 1pm, after the crowd. The hummus sandwiches are great. I like to order hot coppa sometimes, the price is not bad at $5.95 (written in March 2008).

G.B. Ratto's may have been around for 100 years, but I just tried one of their sandwichs for the first time a few days ago. WOW! Probably the best Reuben I've ever had, and I've had a lot of Reuben's in my day. I can't wait to go back.

I just heard about this place from a friend who isn't even from Oakland. She recommended it right around the time I was looking for a good sandwich in downtown Oakland. I gotta say, it was GOOD. Just a good deli sandwich with a vinagrette and all the fixins. Not too badly priced either. For $6.25 I got a fully loaded pastrami sando. I will definitely go back!

Very cool specialty deli and pasta shop in the Old Oakland area.... I love to come here to get a fresh sandi or even the premade halves are great. I love the cheese and olive selection and the decor is has a warm international 60's feel if that makes any sense... lol... also you can sit inside towards the back or out front.... its nice to sit outside in the front while the Friday farmer's marketing is taking place... another bonus about this place... they carry local papers including "the onion"... got to love that!

Best sandwiches in East Bay, and probably best Chicago-style beef sandwich. Nice world grocery and wine selection. Only reason not a 5 star is that the service strategy was a bit unclear. Now that we know how it works I'm sure it will be easy (pick up your order slip when you walk in).

Excellent sandwiches [$5 for the basic, a bit more for the specialties, halfs available]; deli meats [Virginia ham and hot salami are favorites]; good cheese selection; fresh Semifreddi's breads; and a grocery filled with all kinds of exotic goods, including weird sauces, bulk spices/dry goods and international CANDIES mmm! Favorite easy dinner: Pick up a half-pint of their house pesto, some rotelle, a baguette, and a wedge of fromage d'affinois. Stop by Taylor's across the street at Swan's for their loose ground sausage.

My ex-girlfriend loves this place for its sandwiches. We had one of those relationships where when one of us really loved something, the other one found it harder to love it. Competitive to the extreme. So it took me a while to warm up to Ratto's. Also, I kept ordering the wrong thing. Finally, I figured out that I should skip the specialty sandwiches and just get one made the way I want it. Roast beef, pesto mayo, good cheese, crunch roll. Mmm, good. They also have those sodas that look like popsicles, in flourescent green and orange, which is always a plus. And tons of fancy chocolate that I can't bring myself to buy, even though I love chocolate. Hey, I'm thrifty, give me a break.

Wow-ee. I love Ratto's. It is MY regular place to eat. I love their Jenny sandwich - with mozzarella, pesto - yum! After ordering it the first time with the default bread, a sourdough roll, I decided that was the only thing I wanted to change. The bread was good but a bit too hard for my taste. This sandwich is always good, fresh, and a good deal at $6.50!

Awesome market. Good cheeses, including a goat/cow/sheep cheese I picked up on my last visit. Great olive selection. They have a variety of beans and rice (including some I've not heard of) in buckets in the back. Take what you want and pay by weight. My favorite thing about this place. They have boudin. It's a gem.

I went there because I have heard great things about this place. Being Italian, I was also curious. I am not sure I liked it. Gloomy, "vintage", very pricey. I did not test sandwiches or anything, but it didn't look very Italian to me. At all. Not even close if I have to tell the truth. At least if compared to Italy in the last 40 years. But then, does it need to be close to Italy? Nope. Why should it? It has its own identity. I don't like it, but many do. Fine. Now, as a comparison, Zarri's deli in Albany - Solano avenue is in my opinion better. Much simpler, no frills. genuine sandwiches. UPDATE march 2008. I have been back. It wasn't that bad actually. I have found things that I can hardly find everywhere else, such as peeled dried fava beans (for soups) and pink pepper (for my filet mignon sauce and various soup garnishes). And great taralli - reasonably closed to the real stuff. The good thing was that we discovered the great Italian cafe/breakfast place next door. That is REALLY great. I think it was cafe 817.

No my young padawan, this is not Trader Joe's.... Cheese, Wine, Sandwiches, Soup, Chocolate, Olives.. more olives, soap, etc... This is a place to go for those of you who never been to Italy or reminisce the last time you've been there. Smell the aroma of spices near the racks. The sweet scent of cured meat. Mouthwatering chocolates. With a large selections of meat, it has a variety of sandwiches available to satisfy a finicky pallet. Friendly staff and they remember you after your 2nd/3rd visit. A short walk from the 12th BART station and to Oakland Chinatown.

I absolutely love this place! The best deli sandwiches for sure....they have a great selection of italian groceries that you cant find just anywhere and bins of dried herbs and spices; which i love. They take phone orders too which is very convenient and it's less than $5 for a large sandwich....They have a great selection of cheeses and breads that are all super fresh and are very friendly....highly recommend this place

Yum, yum, yum. One of my favorite places to grab lunch while I'm working in downtown Oakland this fall. It's fast, easy and delicious. Every time I go I order a different style of sandwich, but I love dutch crunch. Best bread ever, and they have it at Ratto's.

If walking into Ratto's doesn't immediately bring a smile to your face, there is something seriously wrong with you. This place has been a quality deli for so long, the floor boards probably taste like prosciutto. Okay, maybe prosciutto and dirt and wood, but you get my point. There are many cured meats here, plus cheeses. The sandwiches here are really good - try anything on their marble rye. Ratto's is one of the few true hold-overs from earlier days in Oakland Old Town, and is a true legend in the East Bay. Those who long for the days of the original Genova Delicatessen (like me) can still go to Rattos' for a hit of the good stuff.

I like their sandwiches here but ok nothing so special. They are not even huge. If you are hungry u have to get 2. It's like any deli on this planet. I'm giving it 3 starts. It didnt wow me....sorry.

I'm digging Ratto these days. Working in Oakland, I honestly don't have the desire to explore the neighborhood, I guess I am kind of an S.F. snob, there, I said it. However, some coworkers kept bringing back really yummy looking sandwiches to the office and they finally convinced me to try Ratto. I think their sandwiches are really delicious, especially if you add the vinaigrette and avocado.

As a market, I love it. As a deli, pretty damn good. As a sandwich shop, well... The sandwiches are definitely good, they pack the stuff in, have quality meats and cheeses, but there's something missing. I mean, when it comes to a sandwich, there's not a whole bunch to it, meat, cheese, fixin's, but I think things like a sandwich have to do with a place, an attitude. And, unfortunately, Ratto's is not an Oakland sandwich. Roxie's in the Excelsior District in SF, does not have the same quality of stuff, bread, meat, or otherwise, but the sandwich gots moxie. It has a soul. So, for a damn good sandwich that lacks that soul, the stuff that makes you call it a sub, a grinder, a piece of a place, go to Ratto's. For that other stuff, Oakland is still looking.

a truly excellent place to spend ten minutes waiting for a genuinely outstanding sandwich. this endearing old oakland establishment really has everything going for it: a great sandwich counter, run by friendly people, and housed in an incredibly comprehensive, not to mention entirely charming, italian grocery. put in your custom order (anything on the dutch crunch is sure to deliver) and browse the jars of intriguing international delectables while they deftly craft your ideal sandwich. you'll be lucky if you get out of there without spending an extra $25 on oil-cured roasted tomatoes, dark chocolate, and local balsamic vinegar, but it's hard to stay mad when it's all so good. and they even have non-alcoholic italian apertif sodas (think campari and soda without the buzz) that come in the cutest (and tiniest) bottles you can possibly imagine and are perfect for storing any number of things (inks, spices, valium?) in classy style.

this place is pretty damn good i get a sandwich thats not on the menu they say if u order it try to get there before the lunch crowd so they have a little extra time to make it dutch crunch tuna roasted turkey mayo mustard pickles tomatos pepperchinis ( i know i didnt spell that right but dont trip ) oil and vinegar i've been eating that type of sandwich for atleast 20 yrs and im not that old

Great sandwiches for a good price. My favorite is the Jenny with fresh mozzarella and pesto, and the Tuna sandwich - yummers. Though the wait can be a while at the lunch hour rush, it's worth it. You can also spend that time perusing their international market selections. More than once I have walked out of there with more imported candy bars than lunch items.....but it's worth it :)

Great place for a sandwich without the lines you'll find at Genova or AG Ferrari. I've had my order messed up more times than it's been right, but the sandwich is always tasty no matter what. Greatl throw-back feel.

Very good customized sandwiches! I get mine with swiss, sprouts, hummus, and avocado, and it's always totally satisfying. I've had better sandwiches in my life, but this place is very reliable and the space has that classic european deli vibe.

Update: - a beautiful cool summer day... had a cup of soup and a samwich... lentils and sau-szi-chheee.. kinda salty... the touch was I took a couple packets of mayo with me for the samwich.. rip..splat..dip the sandwich every couple bites...ooooohhh boy!!! turkey ham swiss..even better!!! Love to stroll from work to this lovely market on a bright, sunny, cool day for lunch.. pick and choose what you like on your samwich, just fill it in on one of those sheets, throw on top o' de counter... browse the spices, pasta, wine, cheese, bacalau!, olives..while you wait .. pick up a bag a chips and juice and roll right out or sit somewhere inside or out.. they also have pre-made sandwiches and salads if youre in a rush... great place for samwiches!!!

You can pick up an order form and fax in your selection. They have wonderful choices of all the trimmings. I know it sounds strange but I like a the whole wheat bread, spicy mustard, avocado, roast beef, and jalapeno combination. For some reason it just works for me.

    (5)
  • Max M.

oh my god pesto mayo and roast beef super good, really cool/highway-accessible neighborhood, they've got all sorts of boutique foods but you should really come for the deli. kind of unique ordering system, but no worries, the deli-people can help

  • Gordon F.

ratto's is great for lunch! they have pre-made and fresh made sandwiches for you to choose from. i would go with the fresh deli sandwiches that they make at the counter over the packaged ones though. it can get pretty crowded at lunch time, but you can all or fax in your order. even if you order when you get there the wait isn't too bad.. only 5-10 mins usually!

This place has great sandwiches at a reasonable price. I really want to give it 4 stars but, at over 50%, the mealy tomato index is off the charts. For some reason I keep trying, but more often than not end up picking shreds of disintegrating red mush out of my sandwich. Order without the tomatoes and you'll get a 4-star sandwich.

Ratto's is an absolutely magnificent Italian deli with gourmet cheeses, olives and meats as well as fantastic sandwiches. Probably the best deli sandwich I've had in the East Bay. What's more, we happened in on a Saturday when they were doing a wine and cheese tasting, so we got free nibbles of excellent salami and cheese, along with tastes of three moderately priced and surprisingly good wines. An Oakland landmark and well worth a visit.

Good Sandwiches. I like this place a lot actually, the market is really cool and has some obscure Italian imports that you won't find many other places in the mainstream bay area. Ordering and picking up can be a little dizzying, but overall its worth it. This place gets absolutely packed at lunch sometimes so go early.

I love Oakland. I love Old Oakland. Ratto's is the REAL Old Oakland. It still has that feel to it inside, but let me tell ya something son: Do you want an amazing deli sandwich? Then go here. I work in downtown Oakland, so it's great having a real deli nearby. But be warned, the wait can be killer at times because everyone in downtown Oakland knows about it. Try and go before or after the main 12-1p lunch crush, because you will be 40 deep in line. Seriously

I went here on a friday during the farmer's market and I ordered a sandwich and it tasted good but the whole next week I had diarrhea and severe cramps and went to the doctors and found out I had gotten food poisoning and my sister who ordered the same sandwich got it too. We were sick for a week and couldn't eat anything that would upset our stomachs. Maybe there was a contamination that day or something but I would never go there again.

I visit this place quite a bit as I work in the area. I haven't ordered a sandwich there, but I did buy a half sandwich once or twice. Hmm... I'd give those sandwiches a 3 out of 5, but remember they were pre-made and packaged in saran wrap. Once I bought "ginger beer" and it was horrid!! There are some tables out front that are usually packed full of people looking like they're having a good time. The made to order sandwiches I see people eating outside look delicious. Also, there's a coffee shop next door for a coffee or latte after your nice lunch. I go to Rattos, and I go there often, for things like fancy imported olives, amazing cheeses, pasta and dried beans. Wide selection of spices - things like whole vanilla beans, juniper berries, nice quality whole blocks of bitter chocolate for my special recipes, stuff you might not be able to find in a regular grocery store. A bit on the pricey side, but I don't mind paying because it's good quality. Check it out. You might like it alot.

It's really one of the great family establishments in Oakland, Old Oakland to be exact. It's run by a Ratto, E. Ratto to be exact. She's owned and operated the place for over 9 years now and her Dad if still around. She's a very sweet, conversational, welcoming person, as is her staff, when they're not crazy busy. I wish the place had a kichen so we could try some of her family recipes. I think after E. the place will become a memory.

When I used to meet friends for lunch down in this area, we would walk up to Ratto's for sandwiches. Pretty cool, old fashioned deli. Good sandwiches, lots of cheeses and groceries surrounding the counter. It gets crowded for lunch, so hop to it if you only have a 30 minute break!

    (4)
  • Hal C.

Terrible selection, tiny sandwiches. If you're stuck in Old Oakland, this is the only place for many blocks where you can get a sandwich that isn't Vietnamese or of very low quality. This grocer uses its old world charm to get people to pay quite a lot of money for very little sandwich. The selection of groceries and sandwich toppings is average at best. Once you have a sandwich at a place like Little Luccas in SF, you realize that a place like Ratto's is a huge ripoff. They never pile their meat high, and don't even pile the veggies or cheese to even try to make up for it. The only reason why this place gets good reviews is because its really the only high quality European grocer in a small area of thriving small and large businesses that appreciate having it around so they don't have to deal with the crowded fast food chains and unkempt Asian produce markets and restaurants that surround this area. It's just a shame that this grocer pales in comparison to many others throughout the Bay Area.

Fantastic Deli! This is the best kept secret in the East Bay. They have been here for decades and still not everyone knows of them. First things first. Parking is hell. Just give in, park a few blocks away and do the heel & toe express to the place. Second, read the signs about how to order a sandwich. Third, fill out the sandwich form completely. Those are the keys to success. This place rocks. Great people, prices, food! What more could you want? The smells hit you just as the doors open. Let me put it another way. You bring back a sandwich from this place to your office, you will be the envy of the place. Bring back one of their many aromatic salads with said sandwich and you will own the place. Their sandwiches are so good they make vegetarians cheat. Now that is good. In all seriousness, great variety of foods, good knowledge of what goes with what, nice variety of beverages, excellent prices. Go check it out.

Love Ratto's, it's the old lunch standby, been around for 100+ years. Seriously. It's packed with people during the lunch hour, has a delicious homemade soup every day, great fresh premade salads (I usually won't eat premade stuff at all because it's usually too questionable - but I will eat it at Ratto's), and of course sandwiches to order. You can do a little grocery shopping while you wait for your food. The friendly staff are knowledgeable about the cheeses, olive oils and wines. Can't beat it.

    (5)
  • Ruth T.

I love Rattos, great sandwiches. Consistently great quality, customized and fresh ingredients. Only bad thing is the wait, if its busy you'll probably wait a half an hour.

    (4)
  • Amy M.

Best granola and yogurt around. Also, a great selection of the best meats, cheeses, pastries and chocolates that the east bay quite possibly has to offer. I like walking here and enjoying a seat outside... Be warned that there are often vagrants in the area that can bug, BIG TIME.

  • Lush L.

Ratto's is insanely awesome. I rarely go there during the downtown Oakland office people lunch rush, but I know it can be crazy then. Their sandwiches are amazing, better than I would make at home (and I can make some delicious sammies). I am a cheese and olive FREAK so they totally win my heart on both counts. Try the Ratto's blend olive mix with some havarti or smoked gouda and veggies on ciabatta...heaven. They also have really yummy natural ginger ale in a bottle in the drink cooler and lots of obscure Italian things that my mom would go crazy for.

This is a really cool deli. It's my go to lunch spot near work. The custom sandwiches are all good and really fresh. The only gripe I have about this place is it gets really crowded around lunch but that's a good sign right?

  • N K.

I've worked right near this place for the past two years and I still heart heart heart their sandwiches! The Jenny, the hummus, avocado with pepper jack....custom make them too - yum yum yum. People who work there seem to always be friendly and nice - really love this place -

ratto's is a half-mile from my office, and every time i go the distance for a deli sandwich, i feel like some kind of lunch hour genius. everything at ratto's is good, bottom line. the breads are exactly what you hope they will be - none of that devil white bread stuff; HALF sandwiches are actually half the price (and they accept credit card too), and you'll never ever get bored of browsing the sundries (cheese, olive oils, handmade soaps, etc) while you wait.

    (5)
  • Greg R.

Quick service and VERY tasty eats. Any sandwich is great, but you must get their pesto mayonaise to really liven it up.

    (5)
  • Allen C.

Great sandwiches! They start at $7 for a full size (cheaper if you want half sizes) and go up if you add some of the extras like avocado, or if you get extra meat or cheese. They also do a stamp card, which is good because I go here often since it's down the street from work. My staple sandwich is always pastrami on sourdough. Avocado or pesto are nice additions, even though they can make the sandwich really messy. This deli is one where you fill out a slip rather than dictate to a staff member, so at least this way they're less likely to screw up your order although it has happened to me once. Still, not very likely they'll forget something you specify. They have a few seats inside, but on a sunny day it's so much nicer to enjoy your food at a table on the sidewalk. The rest of the interior is pretty spacious so you're not crowded while waiting for your sandwich, which I usually experience at other places. Probably the only thing I don't like about this place is that they're not that great with securely wrapping the sandwich so that it doesn't drip, particularly if you have tomato in it. Make sure you grab some napkins or get a bag because my sandwiches always drip even before opening them for the first time.

Im live in florida but every time i Come to Oakland , Ratto's (10+) is the first stop. The deli is Unbelievable. Period. The meat is the freshest, farm grown, no preservatives.. Just 100% authentic and the bread... Is a whole other story. Fresh baked and mouth melting. I don't understand how someone could even attempt eating subway or any other fast food places after taking one bite of a sandwich that you got to create from plenty of options in all the categories : cheese, bread, sauce, Meats, veggies... You get the picture. 5stars. End of story.

Been here before and had to do it again! If you're in Old Oakland and are wanting a freshly made sandwich, this is where you want to go. Also, their cheese selection is tops. The last time I went looking for a good young sheep's cheese, Ratto's was my one and only salvation. If you plan on making arugula and cheese stuffed chicken breast for dinner, this deli is where you need to go during your lunch hour. It's all about the good ingredients.

I feel like it's been ages since I was last in this place, I know for a fact it was back in my early Yelp years. I wanted to get some gourmet food shopping in before heading to my Chica's birthday party at SomaR in Uptown. Memories came flooding in from the moment I set foot through the door and saw those prices HAHAHA Yes they're not the cheapest in town that's for sure but you're sure to get some really great product from them if you're looking for gourmet chocolate bars, preserves and Italian inspired provisions. I opted for a little of each and $50 later I was walking my happy but less wealthy a$$ right out the door. All I can say is it's all about the gourmet and they have it!

Yummy sandwiches! Good selection of cold and hot, and you can easily customize your own sandwich - which I love. They offer half sandwiches, which is great for lunch. Easy online ordering, and they offer delivery. Ratto's also have a good selection of deli salads (I had two in my fridge for lunch tomorrow) and soups. TIP: Right now, you can get a free sandwich (up to $8.75) with your first online order and a $5 purchase. Great deal!

I found Ratto's with a Yelp search for "gift basket delivery" in Oakland. I perused the website and called for more info. The first person I spoke with was a bit hard to follow but the manager (maybe the owner) Elena quickly took over the call and SAVED THE DAY!! She put together a fantastic gift basket for my modest price point and delivered it same day to my sister down the street. She even included a sweet card to congratulate her on her promotion and wish her a happy birthday! I'm not sure of this is a regular service or something they'd even promote but it made all the difference in the world to my sister and I seeing as we are on opposite coasts. I'd HIGHLY recommend stopping in for a bite or a sweet treat and will make a point to do so myself my next trip to Oakland. Thanks Ratto's!!

Another downtown Oakland Gem. Friendly staff and fresh, delicious ingredients a-plenty. From $3 pesto pasta containers to consistently appealing and creative sandwich specials keep me coming back for more. Indoor and outdoor seating mean you can enjoy the sun outside or escape the wind by sitting inside - just be sure to plan for the lunch crowd. My recommendation: try the sandwich special with a small sized pesto or tuna salad and enjoy a free glass of water! Skip the chips?

So, I work in Downtown oakland and I complain all the time about how there are no good places or special hidden gems in the downtown area. I have been on this hunt and my co worker suggested this place for sandwiches. I got the Dry Salami with the works on soft roll even avocado, chips, izze peach soda :-))) and the pesto salad. pros: sandwich was delicious very high quality and I can't believe they had the peach Izze i've been waiting to taste it. cons: IT TOOK FOREVER (they said its because the state bar is today which explained the crowd) for all I got it was expensive $15.49 the pesto salad is a little dry and last but not least I forgot to ask for salt, pepper, and vinegar! I will be back and hopefully if the wait isn't as long as it was today then I will boost up to 5 stars!

OMG!! I LOVE this place. I used to work at the Oakland jail, graveyard shift and I would pas by this store all the time on my way from BART. I was always curious to try this place and this past weekend, I finally had a chance to. My Brother and I went to the Farmer's Market and noticed that there was chairs outside and so we wandered in and ordered some sandwiches. I ordered the Margharita sandwich and my brother got a Reuben. We were both very happy with our choices and can't wait to go back again. I also like their eclectic supply of hard to find items..

Amazing sandwiches! They have build your own sandwiches (my go to choice), hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches; all offered as full or half half orders. I normally go with a half order and pick up one of their prepacked containers of salad: potato, pesto, greek, etc. You can't go wrong with any of the available options here.

Sandwich is decent the price could be better but all in all a good place for a sammich. No thrills, nothing that grabs you to have you say I must return. In the area want a decent deli sandwich, come here. The end.

Oh hey there, where you been all my life? I was introduced to GB Ratto & Co by my friend Patricia C, the Hon of Hons. We met there one day for an afternoon of farmer's market shopping, lunch and strolling. HOH knows her stuff in the kitchen and locally where to get it and I was glad she showed me this spot. I bought bulk spices on the cheap, bought some yellow eyed beans that I made an awesome soup from and cheeses. Oh the cheeses, what a great deal for small pieces of different varieties and a lovely parmesan for just about everything. Just a great deli with excellent goods to make your meals that much better. Whether you pick up food for there or food to cook at home, you'll find something new and exactly what you need for a great price.

An old Oakland institution that has been around for 100 years and deservedly so. Great sandwiches with imaginative rotating specials, many of which are vegetarian; delicious cheeses, salami, olives, etc.; and hard-to-find gourmet Italian ingredients. The wine selection yields up great, inexpensive finds from France and Italy. You can sit at a table in the sidewalk or in the back where there's often live jazz. The staff is super-friendly and rounds out the personality of this fantastic little spot. Make sure to talk to proprietress Elena, she's there almost every day and is a ray of sunshine who is the spirit of the place, the kind of person that makes downtown Oakland fabulous.

Ratto's has been around forever, and it's the only place in Oakland that I can think of where you can get Mediterranean delicacies like you would in any major city's Italian or Greek neighborhood. This part of downtown Oakland is not all that colorful, but with the Housewives' Market just around the corner and now Caffe 817 next door, it's starting to feel more like a destination. Ratto's feels downright cavernous, and I still don't think the owners use the space optimally since a dusty emptiness permeates the space even when it gets crowded. On this particular Saturday morning, it was pretty empty except for the staff getting their deli counter ready. Their Italian-style sandwiches are good carb-loaders, but I usually come here for the specialty products like hearts of palm or grape leaves. They have pre-made giardiniera salad in their pickles section, and there's quite a selection of olive oil, bulk rice and Italian cookies if you are so inclined. Now they appear to be broadening their worldview with Indian products like masala curry paste (see photos). I like Ratto's, I really do because this is the type of place that probably served as a role model for chains like Dean & Deluca. However, every time I come here, I feel its age a little more. I just think a cosmetic facelift could lift the energy level considerably.

A solid place to get a decent sandwich. They do hot sandwiches really well. The breakfast wraps they added are even better in my opinion. I would suggest a smoked gouda chorizo combo. I'm not a huge fan of the prices but there aren't many places to grab a sandwich around the area. The ingredients are very good though. I do like the store portion of the location as well. Good place to get spices and Italian ingredients (pasta, olive oils, wines, etc.)

I've been coming to Ratto's for a long time. I can even remember when they served dinner and had live music on Friday nights. Man, I'm old. In any event, Rattos is always very reliable and well stocked. I love going there for their bulk spices, grains and beans. The selection is vast, and they really have some pretty esoteric spices. I was very happy to discover on a recent visit that they carry Rancho Gordo beans, my absolute favorite. They even had the Christmas Limas, which can be hard to find since it's a small crop. Be sure to check out their olive oils and cheese selection. Lots of great cheeses, and you can find some small pieces; just right for a quick treat.

WOW! Just moved to Oakland and so happy to live so close to so many great restaurants and food shops and Ratto's is a new favorite. Sandwiches and grab-n-go items are just a start. We can get cheeses, wine, pasta, bulk spices and other bulk items and SO MUCH MORE! Did I mention cheese? The selection is great and the staff are all amazing, friendly, quirky. Love this place!

Sandwiches are good, average price, about 7 bucks for one that I made (you can choose to make your own). Nice grocery store aspect to it too which is makes it cooler. Staff is plenty nice, great place to sit outside in the sun during the day. Overall, not much I can say, because not much amazed or surprised me.

I've been going to Ratto's for lunch for over thirty years . It's one of Oakland's little known gems. I've been told it's been in the same family since the turn of the last century. Wonderful sandwiched made within minutes, Italian and other European delicacies you can find no where else, and a friendly helpful staff (ask for Elena, the store's matriarch) that add to the experience.

How is this my first time eating here? This is the perfect simple Italian deli to grab a sub for lunch. So delicious, has everything you want, and is perfectly priced. I love my Ike's for inventive unique and tasty sandwiches but sometimes I just want a standard sub with simple delicious ingredients that won't make me regret all of my life/food choices. Now I've found my place! Highly recommended!

Ratto's seemed like a good spot to grab a sandwich or place a catering order, since their menu is vast and they do party platters. Another big plus is that they are locally owned and operated in Oakland and I'm all for supporting small businesses. However, I never got the chance to try their sandwiches because they never gave me the opportunity to order. I spoke to someone over the phone regarding delivery and she confirmed that they will deliver my platter if I agreed to a delivery surcharge. That delivery fee is fine and acceptable, but when I called back to place my order, every single person I spoke to gave me a different answer. One person answered the phone, took my order, then placed me on hold and another person took over the call. This happened 3 times with each person asking me the EXACT same questions--i.e. I was asked for my name, phone #, order, etc. 3 different times during one call. Their lack of communication made for a very poor customer experience on my end. Of those three, 1 said they don't deliver at all and the other 2 initially said they don't but switched their answers to a minimum order of X $. I was so fed up and asked to speak to the manager, but she was not available. I asked for a call back and it has been over a week now and I have not heard a single word from them. Terrible business practices. I guess they don't want our business or they just don't care enough. Either way, it's safe to say I will not be patronizing Ratto's ever.

rattos.com I bought my lunch here on Friday. Sandwiches are $6.75. My sandwich was $8 because I wanted extra meat. Receipts aren't given out. As a result, I only know that the amounts below are correct (I could be wrong in terms of what they correspond to). I think my chips were $1.50, my drink $1.75, and my shortbread $1.90 ( yelp.com/biz_photos/1yxf… ). The "Dirty" chips are quite good. The Black Cherry soda is sweet and worth buying. The shortbread was new to me. It was wonderful!! I will certainly buy it again. There's a solid selection of cheese ( yelp.com/biz_photos/1yxf… ). Fruit and salads are sold here, but the choices are minimal. More impressive is the selection of meat (I usually stop for a moment to check it out). There's now a small table on each side of the counter. Counting the tables outside, the seating capacity here is about 20. I only had to wait a few minutes for my sandwich. It's normally busy here during lunch, but only about 10 people were around (it was raining, and there was also a farmers' market going on). There are only 2 cash registers, but purchases are rung up very quickly (that's partly why I'm unsure of what the amounts above correspond to). I didn't think that I was given extra meat at first, but I soon discovered that my sandwich actually contained a good amount of salami ( yelp.com/biz_photos/1yxf… ). My sandwich was as delicious as I thought it would be. I have to say, though, that it wasn't worth $8. It was a bit smaller and not quite as good, but, including tax, I only had to pay $4.30 for the salami sandwich I recently bought at Dolma's Deli (it's only about 7 blocks away). I enjoyed my meal, and I was full for hours despite not eating my chips until later. It's not perfect, but Ratto's hasn't been around since 1897 by accident. youtube.com/watch?v=4U6e…

This is nice sandwich shop plus small grocery market, where you can find all italian groceries. I like the sandwiches here good and big, and on top of that customer service is really nice, will definitely go there again and again.

The meatball soup is to die for!! Don't worry, if you're a vegetarian they also make a killer veggie/lentil. I go here a few times a week as I work nearby and they never disappoint. The staff are super friendly and yeah, you may have to wait in line because they're awesome but it's worth the wait.

How do I review a store that dates back to 1897, and is still run by the founders' descendants? After walking under the great Ratto's sign it's like stepping back in time. The smells of the spices in bulk seem to perfume the air, and they are the main reason I like to shop here. You can also buy different pastas, grains, and flours. They also have a full deli. Your purchases will be rung-up on an antique cash register. On Fridays afternoon they have live jazz. S and I were the only people in the store when we were shopping for spices, but the pianist still played. I was happy to see a few more people come in the store as we were leaving. Shopping at this historic spot is such a sensory experience (for me) that it has to be a five star review.

4 stars is about right. I phoned in an order for pick-up. It was ready when I got there, no waiting around 11:30AM on a Tuesday. I also picked up 2 salads from their refrigerated section. Prices are a tad high, but the food is high in quality. Portion sizes are significant too. We could only eat half of each sandwich and a salad. The turkey avocado sandwich was my fave. I ordered it without any substitutions and it was delicious. The wheat sub roll was softer than expected. It worked well with the turkey, generous amount of ripe avocados, red onions, lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes. The tomato wasn't 100% ripe, but I'm being real picky here! DH got a special order roast beef on dutch crunch roll, no cheese, light mustard, pickles. He purposely wanted it dry, since we weren't going to eat them until later. Dutch crunch was tasty and fresh, roast beef was meaty and nicely seasoned (but if you're a guy, you might want to order extra meat), pickles were crisp and tangy. Just as expected, except the mustard does have some heat to it. If you like wasabi, you'll love this stuff. Sodas in cans were $1. Don't pass up the salads. The bean salad, comprised of kidney beans and garbanzos, soaked in fruity olive oil and spices was awesome. The beans were tender and smooth. We couldn't stop eating it. The mango lentil salad was also good, but a different flavor palette. This one was heavy on the green onion and vinaigrette. Refreshing, but beware of the onion breath! Salads were packaged in round clear plastic containers and sold based on weight. Each one was between $2.50 and $3.00. I packed the containers in a tote bag and sadly they leaked! They have plastic utensils and napkins in the front. They have a good selection of olives (including kalamata and nicoise) and cheeses. I'll definitely be back to pick up some goodies. :)

This place is a nice little find. They have pasta, wine, deli sandwiches and more. I had a decent cup of lentil soup with sausage. Folks were attentive and offered help as soon as they noticed I was a noob. The Giant of Ecuador

I love this place. I've been going here for years. Anytime I am in Old Oakland I try to stop in for their tuna. So glad they added the hot sandwiches. My new favorite is the beef.... and the Ruben is darn tasty too. I love shopping around the store while I wait for my lunch. I always pick up something unique. The staff is friendly and the owner, Elaina is a gem.

So I had to edit my response because twice now at lunch I had to wait over 10 minutes to buy a drink and crackers. I know it's busy and there are a lot of people waiting on their sandwiches, but they need a system that helps them tend to people that didn't order food and just want to quickly buy and go. On top of that, when i was tended to, the sandwich orderers blocked my way and it was difficult to get to the cash register. How about a separate sandwich line??

Ratto's is such a great spot for lunch catering! I've used them several times now for small office meetings and everything has been flawless. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. Everyone I've spoken with who works there has been incredibly pleasant. They also deliver and have always shown up on time. I would recommend the assorted deli platter with a couple of salads if you're looking to order lunch for a group of 10-20.

I ate outside today for the first time in a very long time. Like a lifetime. Darkest days, winter, ruining me. Not no more! It's spring baby. Spring has sprung. The second cherry blossoms are out, the darker ones; sundresses not yet in abundance, but threatening. Spring spring spring. Seriously, I'm really happy about this. Like I said before, Ratto's rocks. And to set a spell on the sidewalk with a tasty Italian deli sammy and an orange drink on a beautiful day that only portends more beautiful days ... Is pretty sweet. Love the little things.

This place is a boon for Oakland. Here there is an amazing selection of spices, cheeses, olive oils, dried mushrooms and beans, and tons of stuff that I have no idea what to do with. In fact, I'd say I have no idea what to do with 80% of the stuff in there, which is awesome. Like many Oaklanders who have lived here for much longer than I have, I've bought all of my olive oil from Ratto's. I pick up some cheese before friends visit, or before dinner / cocktail / birthday parties or whatever. Did you know? There's often live music. I love the sandwiches. Tip: You can get a punchcard.

A good little lunch spot. I haven't bought groceries here, but recommend the soup and sandwich selections. Lots of fresh ingredients and the gluten free bread have me coming here a few times a month. On the GF bread here: it's really tiny! Your whole sandwich will be half the size of the regular sandwich, and you will get up-charged for it, of course. That being said, it's tasty and the regular sandwiches are huge! The plus is that they have a nice selection of sodas (Bruce Cost!) and chips to go with your tiny GF sammie. The service can be a little slow, so be sure to give yourself a little extra time.

There's no place like Ratto's. Not even home. First off, they have a great sandwich ordering system. They have these cool homemade sandwich forms with checkboxes on 'em, and they have a bunch of pens for you to use. You fill it out with your wishes, then drop it on top of the counter. Then, you wander around and look at all the cool Italian products everywhere, or decide to get macaroni salad from the deli case, or loop to the front of the cash register for an exquisite soda and crispy chips. Within 5 minutes, they'll call your name and ring you up with the right kind of smile. If it's a nice day. grab a table out front and munch away on mellow but populated Washington street. It it rains, grab a seat in the back. It's old and cool and not like other places. If I worked in Oakland, I'd eat there every day. Now, for the actual Sandwich -- I'm a Tuna on Dutch Crunch with Lettuce, Tomatoes, Pepperoncini, Swiss, and Mayo kinda guy -- and Ratto's has the best. Tuna is mayo-ey without bogging you down, and the mix of cool, crisp, bitter and pungent is perfectly balanced. But everything I've had is good -- Jamon Serrano, Hot Coppa, Turkey for the faint of heart, etc. That said, the only place that rivals their Tuna is Saul's Tuna Melt, which is in a different kind of space.

Time 4:15pm Purpose: Company CEO's coming in town. Grabbing a lite healthy snack+drink and relax as much as possible. Ambiance: Airy nice quaint place with mostly imported Italian hard to find goods. Has that old speakeasy vibe to it feels like if I pull the right knob a trap door or wall will pop open. Staff: Not very talkative in terms of ordering even though there are stacks of papers and pencils available. Only time they will actually talk is if you said something wrong or is not what it suppose to be you'll be corrected with a grin. Cleanliness: So-so passable not wrong from the ordinary other than a place that serves food. Surprisingly their counter are cleaner than their shelves full of goods. Eats: Grab a small tuna salad and cold drink just enough to tie me over til after hour meeting. This tuna salad was as fresh as it can be with hints of herbs and spices you know it's made in house. There were probably olive oil mix in as it sure tasted good. $4.17 for about 3-4oz worth. Products: Mostly all Italian imports stuffs that you won't see at major chain stores or deli. Has to be specialty kind of deli like here in able to find your goods. Now if you don't see an item doesn't mean that is not there items are rotated frequently depending on events of the months and what vendors brings in. Expectations: Good Italian goods made fresh or pre-package. During lunch time it might be better to phone in order or fax if you don't you will encounter a lunch crowd of judges, lawyers, police officers, court and state marshalls as the courthouse is just down the street. Final Thoughts: This place has been her a long time and the prices fits the items and qualities. For anyone doing jury duty and needed a quick sammy this is it and if you can't walk a block to adhesive this you better pack your own.

People I work with think this is a far walk...maybe if you have the legs of a hamster. If you work near the City Center of Oakland and want a sandwich, this is your spot. They make it to order and all of the ingredients are amazing. Fun Fact: I often ask for the Havarti as my cheese choice, but it's not listed as an option. I recommend it...it is delicious.

Ratto's makes the best deli sandwiches in Oakland, hands down! In addition they have a great selection of specialty foods and bulk spices. It is also one of the oldest businesses in Oakland and is tucked in the adorable historical district of downtown Old Oakland which is always a great place to visit. The staff is always friendly and efficient too. If you haven't been you should pay them a visit, it's definitely worth it!

Serving the community for more than a century, it's located in an expansive space in a Victorian building. They carry the merchandise found at most Italian delis - such as fresh pasta, sauces, cold cuts, cheeses, olives, breads, sweets, and outstanding sandwiches - plus exotic gourmet items from other corners of the globe - North African harissa, Indian spice pastes, and black rice from China. Dry pasta, grains, beans, spices, and flour are all available in bulk, and their house label wine vinegars and olive oil are among the best. There's also an extensive array of cookware and interesting kitchen gadgets and gizmos.

I love this place. They serve great sandwiches and have good packaged food to bring home. The only problem is seating, there aren't enough seats because their sandwiches are so damn popular! **Hint try to get there a little early 11:30-11:45ish to beat the crowd.**

I can't believe I lived in Oakland a year before I found Ratto's (two blocks from my house, to add insult to injury) No more trips to AG Ferrari's for freshly ground parm. Close to the sausage store to boot! This just gets better and better. It was a healthy amount of meat for a sandwich-which means that it was appropriate without running the risk of a heart attack. Seriously, what a find. Stop in the next time you're passing through the East Bay. Also, an easy walk from the City Center if you're looking to experience more than Popeye's. Did I mention how well priced it was?

What I hear was a typical corner market prior to the corrosive suburbanization of the US. This market has a little bit of everything and is a great place to pick up a quick lunch if you're otherwise marooned in a nearby office.

another oakland favorite! sandwiches are delicious and of every variety (my favorite is the jenny), people are friendly and family-like, and it's just a lovely, welcoming space. even though it's in the thick of downtown oakland, i feel at peace there, and love coming whenever i am nearby.

I think this place is OK, but then again it is not easy to find a great Italian deli in these parts -- like the ones I grew up with in NYC. Any of the folks who gave this place 5 stars would rethink this if they travelled to parts known for this kind of food. I found a pretty high ratio of Saag's products here. Not that Saag's is bad, but it is not so special and you can find it in the supermarket. I found they had a very limited variety of meats and other things and much of it from pretty run-of-the-mill suppliers. They were selling the same tuna in olive oil by the can for a high price that you can get inexpensively at Costco by the pack. Maybe this place was great years and years ago -- it certainly has the "bones" for it -- but I was really let down when I saw what was actually in there. The sandwiches we had were OK, but were really light on the meat, which is true of the Bay Area in general, I think.

awesome sandwiches. i usually get the roasted turkey with smoked gouda, pesto mayo, and all the trimmings on whole wheat. if you're a sandwich snob like me, you'll love this place. it's the real deal.

This place is excellent. The wheat roll is yummy and adding some pesto and/or cucumber is a cheap way to add some more goodness to the sandwich. Also, if you're in a hurry the trick is the faxed order - fill out a form, fax that sucker in and fifteen minutes later walk right to the front of the line. It's worked great so far. They also have a great collection of single serving drinks, usually including a type of Brazilian soft drink called Guarana Antarctica as well as Mexican Coca-Cola.

About 100 years ago some italian folks got out to the Bay and they opened Rattos in downtown Oakland. They been serving up the best ever since. I like to get in there for lunch most days, and when things are going nicely, the wine selection can be most helpful. They slice and dice the lunch meats with oversized ginsu blades, and you might even be able to convince them to sing a song if the mood is right (joking) but everything is always fresh, the bread is bomb and they have the best imported cheese selection around. ANything from real stinky to silky smooth.

ratto's is an old school, old world delicatessen. like any established and successful business, it is comfortable with itself, not running skittishly to satisfy the latest fad. the vibe is all vintage, a look which suits the products. pickled hearts of palm and spanish anchovies look extra authentic stacked on the wooden shelves, right next to the antique stove. wheels of cheese and bowls of marinated olives chill in the glass cases. big glass jars hold cookies and candies and there are barrels of dry goods in the back. the ceilings are high, allowing a view of a loft full of miscellaneous junk right next to the obligatory cramped upstairs office. the deli occupies all of the downstairs, selling import specialty products from the mediterranean, and of course, sandwiches made to order. someday i will try their cold pressed olive oil and house made pesto. in the meantime, i LOVE the tuna salad (and i don't even like sandwiches normally, but that's another story) and the soups are always good.
