Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

This place has the some of the best pizza I've had in the bay area and is only three blocks from my house. Love it.

I am so happy about DoughJo in the neighborhood ~ The Laurel District. The pizza is a great portion for the price. Impressive. Also, it was covered in toppings and not at all greasy. SO freakin' yummy. I am psyched to have this nearby. We are hungry for more quality food nearby. If only they were open on Mondays and later the other days. Well, maybe it's better for my wallet. I often want to order at 10pm, but they're are closed then. At any rate I am grateful when I can enjoy it. Also, the service is really friendly. Thanks a bunch!

The Classico is true NY style pizza. Very tasty, and worth the drive to pick it up. Will definitely be back.

We ordered a pepperoni pizza and a caesar salad. The pepperoni has fresh basil on it which was a nice bonus. It has a nice flavor... I don't know if it was the best pizza I've ever had for $22 for an 18", but good enough that we are eating there again tonight :o)--opting for the 14" for $14 this time. Part of that reason is their caesar salad dressing... it is excellent! The make their own dressing (and sell it)... unique flavor of maybe horseradish in it? ... not sure but it is sooooo good.

Still loving the pizza just as much, but stopped in to order a whole pie on a whim and was pleased that it was be ready in 10 minutes. They must have installed more ovens and got the hang of the new space. It's hard to go wrong with the classico, but we like the fungi deluxe quite a bit, too. Such a great addition to near-east Oakland.

yaay, finally awesome pizza in my hood!!!!!
(5)Charlie H.
I've been going here since they've opened and I love their pizza. What makes their pizza really is the thin crispy crust. They are also one of the few places that know you can't go too heavy on the toppings otherwise you end up with a soggy middle. This is the place to go if you want a crispy tasty crust above all else. The ingredients are top notch. What prompted me to write this review is their service though. While they might not be the smiliest group, they treated me right. I ordered the last pizza they had for the evening and they accidentally put on the wrong sauce. They called me up, said they could make me anything with red sauce and didn't charge me for the pizza. They even refused payment for the soda I wanted. The only recourse I have left is to write a review.
(5)Lua L.
So, I've gone twice because they have great pizza. Really really yummy with great topping choices. However, they are hella over priced. Like... Hella! Worst part: both times the service SUCKED! These folks were so unbothered. No "hello" no smile, nada. I felt like I was bothering them. Nope. Not going back. Stank hipster attitudes ain't for me. I'll spend my money else where.

A disappointing experience to say the least. This place was on my bookmarks for a bit - the name was quite catchy and they had some decent reviews. When I showed up past noon I was coldly greeted - if you can call it that - by the counter girl (the one with the fake blond hair and tat behind her ear). When I noticed the pizzas by the slice were in the counter I asked her what kind each on was. She looked at me like - duh, don't you know?! - and then said, "I don't know - this one looks like it has such and such..." Yeah, I can see that too but you really don't know what ingredients are on YOUR OWN pizzas and you have to look?! WTF? I then told her that I just wanted one slice of the veggie. She again gave me that same stupid look and said, "Why don't you just get the special and you'll get two slices?!" Uh, maybe because I'm not that hungry and I'm getting pissed that you're treating me like shit so I don't want to stay longer than I have to. They only have a small/limited counter space (no tables) so it also didn't help that they had a large flour mixer in the corner taking up space too. Was that suppose to be decor? The only plus was that the pizza crust was pretty tasty and the fresh basil was a nice touch hence the two stars. But the sauce and ingredients were just there. Definitely not coming back.
(2)Angela R.
Awesome Pizza. Got my nails done next store then went into this place thinking that they couldn't really have slices ready for purchase. But they actually had four pizzas to chose from and the slices were huge and only $3.50!!!! Very good pizza and I love the fact that they put fresh basil on it. Highly recommended!
(5)Anthony H.
Maybe we were just that hungry but this place is well worth the quick stop off the highway !
(5)Francisca H.
I just moved to the Laurel district. And Fist of flour is my friend neighborhood pizza joint. It's pretty good, good crust the cheese tastes fresh. Over all pretty impressed. They carry my favorite Italian soda by San Pellegrino. It's best for take out, there's pretty much no dining area. No booze either. So Id much rather take it to go and have it with beer at home. Quick easy dinner for after work.
(5)Nolan B.
Their "Blue Hill" pizza was fantastic, however the Blue Haired Girl at the front left a bad taste our my mouths. We are very happy to have a pizza place of this caliber in our neighborhood but, it's unfortunate that when you place your order your confronted with an unfriendly dismissive attitude. I overheard her on the phone with another customer when we were leaving, same attitude. Maybe she was just having a bad day, I don't think I want to continue to deal with that. I mean I'm the customer and I'm a very friendly person ... and I'm giving you money. I'm sorry I bothered you with my order? Hopefully their pizza will save them from going under, very pricey but, it was AMAZING! I would highly recommend, without the poor customer service I would have easily rated 5 stars FYI- Only good reviews remain on their website blog.
(2)Alexa W.
Have I mentioned that I am a pizza snob? No? Well, I am. I am sorry, but I grew up so close to the Italian border that I could smell the pizza Napoli from my porch. That said, this place has pretty damn good pizza! And it is down the street from where I live. What could be better? You might have had a slice from the Fist of Flour food truck around town when they park in front of bars in downtown late at night for example. Nothing better than a few beers and some heavenly pizza with fennel salami on the side walk :-) When I come here to their brick and mortar shop, the Doughjo, I usually go with the Tuesday special of two slices of whatever the chef is concocting that day - to go. Sometimes with a little fresh basil or arugula on top. That plus a drink is $7. Not bad at all! Go Laurel!
(5)Margie R.
I am hoping Fist of Flour improves in the following ways: Be consistent in the preparation of their food. The first time the pizza had scant toppings and only a few daps of cheese. The second time there was lots of cheese, but not much basil or other toppings and all were missing from about an inch from the edge. The edge was burnt and the tabs on the take-out box were not opened. When I arrived at home with my pizza, the crust was soggy. More training please! Don't have the cashiers asking for tips when you are paying. The amounts listed are 10, 15 and 20%...are you kidding for pick up orders? The cashier looked at me intently as she watched to see if I was going to tip. This was very intimidating and inappropriate. Price is high compared to other local Pizza places. I do appreciate your fresh ingredients, but to date, your product has not proved to be worth the high price. Open later in the evening. You would have almost no competition if you stayed open later in the evening...say 12pm . Hire a Security Guard. Do a trial period for a month on Fridays and Saturday nights. I feel your business could improve dramatically if you address these issues listed above. Wishing You The Best...... M.Bailey
(2)Brian T.
Such tasty crust! Fresh ingredients... Sit back and watch it made in the authentic wood fire pizza oven. This is my spot.
(5)Tim M.
I really want to like this place because it's close to home and reading the owner's pizza origin story on some old news articles was actually inspiring. We ordered the Funghi Deluxe and waited 25 min for it (would definitely phone-in next time). The pie tasted okay but my biggest gripe was that it was barely warm. If it was one of the pre-made slices that got reheated then maybe I'd understand but we ordered a fresh pie that supposedly just came out of the oven. Service was great. I might return someday to try the $7 2-slice special but right now I'm going to find something else to eat for dinner.
(2)Emerson D.
Big fan, great pizza. Support your local Laurel District shops. Take out only, really. Phone in your order because they can get backed up. They have a Tuesday special. I love their dough and sauce. It's just right and i think about their pizza a lot! It's way better than the other options in this area.
(5)Debbie R.
Ordered the Farmer's Daughter Pizza for delivery and was really impressed - big pieces of crispy applewood smoked bacon, thinly sliced yukon potatoes, arugula, and good quality cheese. Yum. Great crust. GREAT crust. Also got their Caesar salad - lots of shaved parm, garlicky toasts and delicious dressing. I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to pizza, but I do believe I have found my new go to spot. So happy they delivery to my neighborhood. Would have given them 5 stars, but their call in number is a bit problematic. First time I tried to order from them was a Friday night and I attempted several times between 6:30 to 7:30 and finally gave up because it just rang and rang and rang - no voice mail, no "please hold".

Two words: Lunch. Special. Two slices and a soda; or one slice, a side salad, and a soda. All for the low price of $7. That's right, I said $7. These aren't some janky little slices either. They are full size slices that one would expect from a place that sells pizza by the slice. Did I mention that the pizza is also delicious? The crust: thin, crispy, and a little bit chewy inside. Love it. The sauce: very pleasant tasting, but I'll admit that I was too enamored by the sauce to think about how to describe it. The rest: nice globs of mozzarella, thick slices of yummy pepperoni, and they will add fresh basil after heating it for no additional charge. I'm from Sacramento and one of my favorite pizza by the slice places here sells one slice for $6+. Lucky for me that I travel to Oakland for work 3 times a week. Even luckier that I stumbled upon this little gem of a pizza place. Final thoughts... The place: small and unassuming, kinda like my favorite place in Sacramento. The food: delicious. The price: cheap The value: amazing The staff: very friendly. Don't be afraid to drop a buck or two in their tip jar since you're getting such a stellar lunch deal. The only thing that I'd like to see is... I wish they opened just a little earlier. I usually eat my lunch around 11:30 and they don't open 'til noon.

So, my husband's buddy rolled through awhile ago with a huge Fist pie and I got to eat one leftover slice (throw it in the frying pan covered with foil and you got yourself one fully revived hot piece of pie). I have too say while I did enjoy it, the pepperoni was sliced a little too thick for my liking, and I'm not crazy about huge slices of pizza for the same reason why I like small smartphones over those huge giant phones the size of your head. However, we gave it another whirl... We ordered a smaller pizza with sausage over the telefono and pretty much started devouring it immediately in the car. Thin, nicely crisp, perfectly cheesed. I love that the standard pizza comes with fresh basil. Any doubt that might've entered our brains the first time was now completely hijacked by pizza-oxytocin. I'm looking forward to my next pizza fix.
(4)Todd S.
They have excellent pizza but every time i call, the chick who answers the phone cant seem to understand my address . Its COLE ST you fucking moron. Since i cant order for delivery and there is no internet option i cant order your delicious pies. Please get someone on the phone who can understand a street name or allow internet orders. This is the third and last time i try and feed my family from your business, get your shit together, you are the only decent pizza in Oakland and if you had taken my info last night you woulda got 5 stars but instead look at where we are now.
(1)Nate D.
Great pizzas, quick service--perfectly comparable with Cheese Board or Arizmendi. So why knock them two stars? The prices: $8 more than those competitors. I really want to support local businesses, and maybe it's not fair to compare because of economies of scale those places might have, but a 40% markup is a lot to pay to shop on principle. I am no business expert, but I can't help wondering what would happen if they'd do one pizza per day--like CB or A--to possibly save money on ingredients, rather than offering 20 different choices, and then they could be more competitive. But as it stands, they're by far the most expensive pizza around, and while they're just as good, I'm not sure they're 40% better.
(3)David R.
I recently moved to Oakland and have been on a search for a great Pizza place. I am happy to report my quest is over. Fists of Flour creates great Pizza's and they are really quick. The MoBetta Polpetta is by far my favorite. They only deliver on weekends, but my orders are always hot and ready when I go in for pick up. They also have great Pizza making classes for those that want to learn how to toss the perfect pizza.
(5)Brin P.
Amazing pizza with great crust and fresh basil on every pizza! Kids and adults agree: it's awesome! Caesar salad dressing is amazing and a little spicy! Huge Parmesan shavings and homemade croutons! Love it!!!
(5)Vicky L.
This pizza is the dankness!!! Delicious thin crust that seems like New York style with the fluffiness of a napoletana(sp?) crust. Tastes and looks hand made and a lot of the ingredients are house made like the fennel sausage. The slices are the best deal ranging from $3.50-$3.75 and the pies range from $15-$30. Great addition to the neighborhood. Going to need to start hitting the gym more. You can literally taste the love.
(5)Michael L.
I despise Fist of Flour with the blinding hot light of a thousands suns. Fist of Flour, and its owner James Whitehead, just piss me off. I moved into the area, just south of High Street and a tad east in the foothills, about three years ago and I was very, very sad about the lack of decent pizza opportunities in the area. MacArthur, between High and 35th, is ghetto, but there's some good food. {The best food always comes from poor people, as a general rule, and I say this as someone who once wore a toque and slaved behind the line back east.} But then Fist of Flour moved in with its deliciousness. The problem with Fist of Flour, in my estimation, nonetheless, is arrogance and I am not convinced that they are going to make it in Laurel District Whitehead, the owner, is making if not the best pizza in Oakland, something damn close. The pizza is tops. It is thin crust - not New York style - but crisp and rich and delicious. Face it. This is damn good pizza. The reason that I hate Fist of Flour, tho, is because they refuse to brand the product in a way that works and that means they will probably slink out of here in a few years, like so many restaurants before them. The store front looks like any lousy friggin' piss-poor pizza joint in the ghetto. If I was walking by with an appetite I wouldn't drop in because the place looks terrible. If you want to get those people who live up in those hills to come down and buy your product, and thus increase foot traffic in your retail district, then you need a little marketing, a little style. Think about Ike's Sandwiches in SF. That guy knows what he is doing, because he understands about deliciousness, but he also understands about marketing. I am not going to chase down his logo and post it, but if you know your business you would know what Ike's logo looks like. It's hip. You need to distinguish yourselves in an imaginative marketing kind of way... a visual kind of way directly in your store front. Look at those popcorn guys across the street. That place looks cool and clean and fun and I would put more money on them than you. The Laurel has terrific potential, but you guys will never make it if you look like Razzos. I hope that I am wrong because I want your food. {And, you have to understand, there is nothing particularly inviting about a clenched fist.}
(4)Mark H.
The pizza here has excellent crust and their homemade Italian sausage is great. The fresh basil on top is nice too! But they are pretty light on the toppings and you'd think there was a ration on cheese. Come on! You charge top dollar for your pizza so there's no reason to skimp on toppings! I've been here three times and each time the toppings get lighter and lighter. Not sure if I'll be returning as I always feel a little ripped off after I get home and see what they sold me. Service is weird at this place too! The staff is consciously trying to be different/edgy and they need to be trained how to interact with their clientele better! This place has a lot of potential but they need to iron out some issues if they plan to still be around in a year.
(2)Paul S.
First time visitor, realizing they've been in town a couple months. The owner (assuming the one who wields the pizza paddle) said he's staying for awhile. Not much to admire from the outside, like so many struggling businesses in Laurel District, buy tastefully designed inside with minimal seating for a few folks. We ordered the Funghi Deluxe: crimini and arugula with a touch of garlic. Great Napolitano crust! They've definitely got their style down, and keep the menu short, where you can also build your own. I'm excited to get back and have a spot closer (and tastier?!) than Arizmendi.
(4)Winé C.
I mostly thought their pizza was just ok. I came in for their special at the time, 2 slices and a can of soda (They give you San Pellegrino, whoot!) for $7. It was around 7PM and they already ran out of their special of the day so I ordered two pepperoni slices. The person helping me was super nice and got my order through. The is definitely a takeaway place, there aren't many seats and when I was there, the fan above us was blowing at full force. My pizza was warmed up and down to lukewarm by the time I walked from the counter to the door, literally full force. I ate the slices and meh. I've had better. It was thinness that I liked but the crust was more hard than crispy. Could be cheesier and the basil did it well but did not justify everything I was having. All in all, an ok place for pizza but I wouldn't exactly call them gourmet.
(3)Daniel R.
Rude customer service. I was at a event. They ran out of boxes so put my whole pizza on plates. I tripped and the pizza fell on the floor. I asked them to replace my pizza and they said it would be 20 minutes, it is now at 45 minutes and they have yet to give me my pizza. I am also working the event and this is not how you treat people who are bringing in people for them to make money.
(1)Christopher C.
Pizza was fairly mediocre - there was nothing distinctively tasty about it. They were serving whole pies and slices at Drakes in San Leandro so we decided to order. We approached their stand and there were some orders placed before us - to make a fresh whole pizza it would be around 15 minutes BUT they did have a half a pie sitting out that could come in "45 seconds, I just need to pop it in the oven" per one of the workers. We delightfully agreed and tipped $2. BIG MISTAKE: We waited OVER 15 minutes for an already made pizza to be heated again. We should have just gotten pizza from costco because Doughjo's pizza was not remotely filling nor was it anything to write home about.
(1)Prav c.
Very good pizza! The location is not the most attractive storefront and the pie is a little expensive but very fresh tasting pizza. One gripe and I should have mentioned it when I was there. You can't charge a fee for using credit cards it's against your the credit card companies agreements, you can do cash discounts...
(4)Danger D.
Awesome pizza. Dough was amazing and so was toppings. Cesar salad was different but def not bad!
(4)Sunny P.
I called in for pick up. The pizza was ready in 15 min. It was crusty and delicious! There is fee for credit card so bring cash.
(5)Morgan P.
I've stopped by Fist of Flour a couple of times, usually to pick up some pizza for dinner on my way home. I think they're trying to label themselves as hipster/artisan. It's good, but I don't think it's that amazing. I also don't think it's alright to charge a 3% fee for using debit/credit cards for ALL transactions. I would understand if you charged a fee for just a slice of pizza (ie. less than $5), but I don't think it should be charged on larger transactions. Their $18 specialty pizza was $23 after tax, fee, and tip. It's on the pricey side for a 14" pizza. I've decided to stick with their pizza slices from now on.
(3)Sho U.
High quality pizza. You can get pizza by the pie or slice for a very reasonable price. They have unique topping combinations that seems very tasty. I got the classico and it was very good.
(4)John M.
This is a gem in the Laurel. I live up the way a bit near Mills, and Cybelles or Redboy have been the go to pizza places, but every time I get a pizza here I remember just how good they are. Fresh basil, nice people, great little storefront, not that doughy heavy crap but an artisan pizza that is filling and and just tastes awesome. The sauce, the toppings! Seriously check them out. They even supposedly have delivery now for places close by which I assume is Laurel, Dimond and Redwood Heights. And don't let the price fool you, the 18" is huge. Gotta highly recommend them.
(5)Eric S.
I have been jonesing for FoF for a while, it had seemed like we were never meant to be. When the truck was there, I was here. When I was there the truck was not....but FINALLY the Doughjo opened and my prayers were answered! You can buy by the slice or a full pie. You can also get a "kit" where you make your own at home! Sounds fun, but I'll leave it to the pros to whip up my pizza. The ingredients were fresh and high quality. Thin crust is the way to go and they know what they are doing here. I cannot think of anything that I didn't like about this place. Limited seating but I kinda enjoyed that it was almost a walk up place. The staff was friendlier than my cat (who is actually very friendly) and the pizza was out of this world delicious. I'm glad it's only a 5 minute drive from my house now! P.S. They take cards but prefer cash.
(5)Jennifer e.
Glad they've made a home in the Laurel. I'd had their mobile pizza before. Gotta say, for me it's not as good from the brick & mortar. I've tried it a couple times - mushroom pie and the italian sausage. Mushroom was good, sausage was disappointing. Not looking for a "meatlovers special" but was surprised at the sparseness of sausage on a $28 pizza. I do like the lightness/taste of the crust. The slices seem like a better option somehow. The price is in that 20% range. Seems about 20% cost more than it should be. Glad they have fans and hopefully they'll stick in the neighborhood, but I have other favorites in the area and since I don't seek out pizza much anymore, I may just look for the truck from time to time.
(3)Steve H.
The pizza here is absolutely tops in the "thin crust" category. I won't get into the thin crust, medium crust, deep dish debate right now -- I simply love all types of pizza. It's amusing (or sad?) to see one reviewer deduct stars because of "curtains". C'mon now! Another reviewer found their pizza to be too salty. This is a particular concern of mine, as I have suffered similar issues at _other_ pizza places. However, the two times I've gotten pizza from The Doughjo, it was not noticeably salty. So maybe they were just having a bad day when that reviewer went? The place I'm thinking of with the salty pizza was that way the past 3 occasions I went there (I wouldn't have gone back after 2, except my friend really likes it there). All in all an awesome addition to the neighborhood. It is easily the best place to eat within an 8 minute drive from my house. One other note -- they close at 8pm Mon-Thurs. The info here on yelp is incorrect.
(5)William T.
Im very glad this place open such near by use to be 5 star pizza but i only ate there once and the rest of the time was playing street fighter haha yeah pizza so bad i haven't been since. love the crust very thin and just perfect so nice to taste fresh tomatoes and love the cheese. i just wish it was a little more of each i would definitely come back. hope you guys upgrade to your wooden brick oven like the truck though that taste better. wsup guys throw a throw back street fighter 2 vintage machine in there.
(4)Jin C.
Just had the veggie @pints for paws. Deeelish! NEW pizza place, not the old one down the st!!
(5)Anastacia S.
Definitely like this place!! I ordered the Classico. It is soooo worth it. Service is quick and the staff are friendly. Ingredients are fresh, and the crust is the perfect blend of crusty/chewy-ness. I will definitely come back!!
(4)theHAMMER H.
Let me tell you about the Doughjo. Their pizza is so simple and so well-made. Each ingredient shines through. It's odd because usually when I eat any other pizza, it's just pizza. This pizza is special! The crust is realliy good, the sauce is delicious, and the quality of the toppings is top-notch. In my opinion, this pizza is a bargain and I would gladly pay more for it. And, there's the customer service. The folks who work here are enthusiastic about what they're doing, so kind and intent on putting the customer first that I have to give them five stars. It's rare these days that you're able to go into a business, make a purchase, feel 100% satisfied with the quality of the product AND feel like the employees are part of a team that's there to help you out. This is that business. Thank you Doughjo and I look forward to many delicious pies in the future! theHAMMER
(5)Jaimie O.
Really happy you are here, Doughjo! Delicious wonderfully crafted pizza. Limited hours, but that is alright, as your offerings are spectacular. The only disappointing thing is the blackout curtains covering all of the windows and door. When the business first opened, immediately people from the neighborhood began patronizing it, surely based on the owner's reputation at farmers' markets and other social events. So, it was really exciting to see such a lovely pizza place open in our neighborhood and see all of the people waiting to purchase their pizza! It brought energy to a long abandoned corner and made it intriguing to stop in for a pie because of all the people waiting inside! Now, they have blackout curtains up and you cannot see anything. You have no idea if they are opened or closed, and you have no idea if any one is even patronizing the business. It reminds me of a business in the "red light" district of town. I find this terribly disappointing and sad. This morning I called and spoke with the owner. Apparently I am the only one that has brought up this issue to him. Through my work in local government with a facade improvement program, I have numerous years experience working with architects to assist businesses that are trying to rehabilitate the exterior of their buildings and make them more inviting to the public. I guess I have an extra sensitivity to the window shades given my work. Perhaps Doughjo will consider another type of window covering to assist with the bright light that is beaming into the business or an awning to help with the majority of the light while still allowing people to see inside. Until then, I do believe they are doing themselves a disservice.
(3)Cynthia V.
If you're looking for a regular ol' pizza, order from another place. This joint offers artisan style pizzas. I ordered a large pie with sausage, good taste but spent too much time in the oven... It wasn't outrageously priced, so I'll probably try it again.

I live in the neighborhood and first tried their pizza at a community fair - it was great. Ordered a classico - took 10 minutes and I absolutely LOVED the fresh basil they added after it was cooked! If they delivered, I would give them 5 stars . . .

Finally got to try this place! I've heard buzz about their truck, and was excited to hear they were opening a brick and mortar shop in my neighborhood. I ordered two pizzas for pick up: the clasico and protesto. The clasico has pepperoni, crimini mushrooms, garlic, and basil. The protesto is topped with thinly sliced potatoes, pesto, and sun dried tomato. This is much more of a take it to-go place, which is fine. They're still new, so bring cash. The pizza itself was very good, the crust is perfect and you can tell they're using high quality ingredients. One large signature pizza sets you back $26, so this isn't pizza I could order on a regular basis, unfortunately. Still, would definitely come back when I'm not just looking for a quick pizza fix.

I like the place, I live in the neighborhood and have been there twice. I was a fan when I bumped into the Mobile truck they have for events. they have not lost any touch getting a nice permanent location. Only reason I didn't give it four stars is the first time I was there the lady was HELLA rude. The owner dude had to give us our drinks and stuff because the lady helping us just turned her back and started doing something else before she was even done with us. I guess she was done but it's nice to have a minimum or customer service and ignoring paying customers half way through there order ain't it. Back to the Pizza, Good semi thin crust. Good ingredients make a good pizza. I have had there Meat Ball and there Greek Both fantastic Pizza and I know Italian food,

Super delicious Pizza, right in our own hood. I'm excited to have such a great pizzeria close by & I'm also excited to watch the Laurel grow. Grow Laurel Grow! (there is very little seating inside, I suggest taking this delicious pizza home - or go to mills and sit on the grass for a picnic).

Perfect Pizza...great crust, quality ingredients and cheese. You have to remember...it's NOT a Round Table Pizza LOADED with toppings, but its got plenty of flavor. Can't think of a place that has better pizza. Cheeseboard, Arizmendi, Oliveto...close. But Fist of Flour is my favorite. Out of town guests love this place... Do yourself a favor and try this place. It really is amazing. Only downside is its limit hours and dining options.

Really good pizza. Great flavor and a nice crispy crust (though the crust became a little limp by the time I arrived home). I would give more stars but for the price. Paid $18 for a small pizza-- $22, actually, if you include the 3% surcharge for using a debit card and 20% tip I accidentally left (for takeout) using that idiotic Square payment system. I don't mind paying a little more for quality pizza--which this was--but $18 is more than you pay at Forge and about the same as Boot and Shoe, which both are nice, full-service sit-down spots, which this is not. Whole Foods' wood-fired pizzas are just as good, except significantly less expensive. You know the price is high when Whole Foods is cheaper. Hopefully, they will consider lowering their prices or at least offering a daily special.

Best local pizza for miles around. Classic flavors bumped up several notches with high quality ingredients. It doesn't get much better than this.

It's so great to have a place like this in the neighborhood. FoF serves pizza that has high-quality ingredients, and is baked to perfection. The best part is that they serve SLICES! which is great, because if they didn't, I most likely would buy a whole pie and eat it all myself. They have limited hours, but if it's a late Sunday afternoon, and you are walking down MacArthur, you can perk yourself up with slice from FoF.

I think we have had about 6 pizzas from DoughJo so far and we have seen steady refinement each time. Had a large pizza last night and the crust seems to have gotten a bit thicker, which is a definite improvement in heft and flavor. They were also more generous with the toppings. Also got a cheese slice and it was really delicious. Sounds like they are listening to suggestions. Better lighting and signage would also make finding the place easier. NEW FAVORITE is the Veggie Delight-cherry tomatoes, Red onion, goat cheese, mozzarella and finished with Arugula and Basil garlic olive oil. I am not a vegetarian and this pizza is delicious and satisfying. Wish they would get a woodfired oven though. The mobile unit makes better pies.

I remember loving Fist of Flour pizza when I used to go to Friday nights at Linden Street Brewery a while back, pre-kid. So I was pretty giddy when I heard they were landing in my neighborhood. The first pizza we ordered was good, but I realized that my heated-up leftover slice tasted even better than the fresh slice the night before, because it was HOT. Even if it only takes you 5 minutes to get home and plate up, this crust is so super thin that it requires just a little bit of care. Now that I'm an expert in serving it, it's one of my favorite pizzas ever. I enjoy reading the blog about the trials of being a pizza nerd and trying to run a business in Oakland - I feel really connected them, and glad to know how much pride they take in using great ingredients to make memorable pizza. And, my toddler would give a glowing endorsement if he could write.

love having these guys in the neighborhood! Have had 3 different kinds of pies, all spectacular. The dough is chewy and crisp at the same time, and very tasty. good balance of toppings and sauce. everything seems fresh. Especially love the house-made sausage. Had a pie at Drakes from the pizza wagon, and it was just as good. I also loved following the saga of opening this new business on facebook.

Last Friday was out first time getting pizza from here and my kids, husband and I are all fans now. The staff was very helpful, nice and honest, as we were over charged and she came to give us the change. I can't wait to order this pizza on our weekly pizza nights!

So there comes a point in your life when you realize that there's more to pizza than just being cheap (hello $5 dominos deals from my college days- do they still do those?). And in fact, most places it's not even that cheap these days. So if you are going to shell out $20+ for a pie just about anywhere you want to get quality for your money. Fist of Flour's Doughjo in the Laurel is the brick and mortar iteration of the popular food truck. They make a good honest pizza for those days when you just want to pick up some pizza and take it home for an easy dinner (they also sell by the slice). It's a thin crust, but not too thin. Very fresh high quality ingredients. The pepperoni on the Classico was delicious. Fresh basil was a nice touch. An intoxicating aroma filled the car on the ride home. This is the kind of pizza you take for granted back East, but struggle to find out here. It's not trying to be fancy; it's just damn good pizza. Forget all the other local take-out joints out there; this is the real deal. So excited to have this place nearby. This is going to be a staple in our house for sure.

Hmmmm. Very mixed. Their pizzas are quite good, but yikes are they expensive. That might call for 4 stars. But today, I went in for a slice. I didn't pay attention while I was still there, ti was burnt. I don't mean well done, burnt. I had to pull off charred black pieces. For $3.75, 1 bready slice of burnt pizza. I like it crispy, but.....! So how does a to-go slice of pizza get carried out here? A box? No. Foil? No. Paper plate in a bag? No. Butt naked ona thin paper plate. How does one keep it on the plate while driving with it (It is take-away, so one must take it away)? By putting it on the floor and driving carefully so that it doesn't slide off onto the crud on the car floor. It would be nice if they gluten-free pizza so that it would be an option for our family. But they don't.When they first opened, I inquired. The answer was no and not only will they not consider it, but they have an attitude about it
(3)Margaret C.
The best! I get the cheese pizza because it is so good there is no need to get fancy/creative. Simple and perfect.
(5)Michelle Z.
Pizza was just ok. Sauce is disappointing, though crust is better. Sausage more salty than spicy. Oh and please cut up the romaine in the caesar, cmon. Not sexy. Dressing needs less anchovy paste or what ever salt source used. If they did something with red sauce, it could improve. I did enjoy pizza with pesto & potato slices more than others.
(3)T C.
This place is a must try. The thin crust taste soooooo good. I just order a cheese pizza with mushroom and it was really tasty. Going to try their other flavor next time.

I'm with Christopher C on this place. At the urging of a friend who apparently had good pizza here before, I gave this place a shot. This was the most over priced, flavorless piece of cardboard. $28.00 plus tax for pizza that wishes it's toppings were in the league of Arizmendi, Little Star, Hot Italian, or Jupiter's. It may be skinny like New York stye pizza, but like most "skinny" products such non-fat ice-cream, it's anorexic in flavor (unlike real East Coast skinny pizza). I ordered the Protesto, and there were hardly any potato slices, and what few there were were sliced paper thin. It looked anemic next to all the pretty pictures I saw here on Yelp. Seriously, get yourself some pita bread, pour on some pesto, and save yourself the trip and $28.00. This place is yet another Bay area hipster food spot where you come up with a catchy company name, have a blog-style website, charge exorbitant prices, be open at random hours to build customer suspense, and voila, everyone thinks it's the next great thing & they line up around the block. I'll stick to Arizmendi, or for delivery, Pizza Pazza.
(1)Rico A.
best pizza in the area but customer service can be bad they definitely need better drink selection
(3)Vanessa Q.
Was excited to try this place, but found it severely lacking. I couldn't tell one type of pizza from another. The toppings were sparse and the crust too thin. I'll give these guys another try, but my first impression wasn't great.
(2)Tallulah B.
Hello Doughjo, Thanks for opening a block away from my house. I am from New York City and I need pizza, REAL PIZZA, to lead a happy and fulfilled life. And you have done that for me. You even most graciously sell by the slice. It overwhelms me with nostalgia. Now, please tell any friends who make donuts and bagels to open up in the Laurel too. That will complete me. With Affection, Tallulah PS -- some good beer nearby wouldn't hurt either. Are you listening, beer fairies?
(4)Tim S.
This is our local pizza joint and for those of you who are into good NY style crust this just might be your spot!
(4)K E.
Tried Fists of Flour for the first time last night and I'm so glad I did! Was in the mood for Arizmendi but I wasn't feeling their pizza of the day. My pizza was ready super fast (15 min) and was delicious (got the one with the eggs, bacon, and potato). Generous toppings and perfect thin crust. Everything was fresh with high quality ingredients, including goat cheese and blueberries on the yummy mixed green salad. If you like interesting, savory, artisan pizzas, give them a try. Super nice guys in the shop too.
(4)Madison O.
I'm so glad I didn't know this place was only 3 minutes away or else I would have gained like 20# by now. Staff is fun and knowledgeable. Pizza was to die for. I have dreamt of it every day since we we were there last. Go there and order anything on the menu and you will be satisfied!
(5)Anusha M.
Really expensive, but they use amazing pizza dough. The topping selections are limited, and everything costs extra. But they do add fresh basil when you pick it up. Not a sit-down place, pick-up only.
(4)kylie w.
I am only giving this place a 3 stars because I just called to order a pizza and was told 'We are all sold out for the day' WTF? you're a pizza place, a restaurant, its a Saturday night! get your shit together! Upside the pizza is GREAT! though I would like to see more veggie and seafood options on the the build your own menu.
(3)Ron K.
I've been using yelp for years but never bothered to leave a review. This place is good. A+
(5)Emily W.
So nice to have good thin crust pizza in creative combinations in our neighborhood. The Italiano pizza is fantastic.
(4)Jon P.

(5)Erin V.
Delicious! Haven't been able to find pizza this style & good since I took my vacation to Hawaii! I have found my new pizza spot! It's nothing fancy...but service is good, quick..and great food ! Staff Is also friendly and they accomodate!
(5)Niki F.
Lordy McGordy, this was just what the doctor ordered after a day of tiling at the house renovation! The crust was perfect NY thin style, graced with just the right amount of primo sauce and toppings. We had the Funghi Deluxe and the Protesto along with the Caesar Salad (thanks for the spice warning on the amazing homemade dressing). A large and small pienwere just right for three of us, with a couple of slices left over for breakfast. These pizzanolos know the art of "just enough" with sauce and toppings. Expect to be delighted!
(5)Beatrice O.
So happy to have a great independently owned Pizza place in the hood. Great Pizza and service.
(5)Stephanie M.
I used to go all the way to Berkeley to get what I thought was good NY style pizza but now my taste buds are taking me here. I am so happy I can get true organic fresh pizza in my neighborhood. This is just what the Laurel needed!
(5)Jessica G.
*sigh* You know, a great way to maintain a customer base - particularly as a take-out pizza place - is to actually answer your phone so people can place orders. If there's a high volume of calls, that usually means business is good, so maybe use some of your profit to set up a reliable call-in ordering system? Or, sure, go ahead and irritate local customers who have previously given really positive word-of-mouth about your business to all their friends. It's up to you, Fist of Flour.

I'm yet another economic refugee from SF to Oakland and I'm always looking for new reliables . I tried slices of pizza from Doughjo on Macarthur ,once plain and once pepperoni and they were each great. Yesterday I went in and they'd just taken an Italiano pizza from the oven so I got 2 slices. This is the best pizza I've had in decades. The crust is amazingly thin and the toppings were in just the right proportion, not piled on like some Papa John garbage or standard corporate pizza but there so each bite brought tasty morsels and thin slices of onion. My favorite.
(5)Daniel K.
Best pizza in the hood! Definitely worth the drive down to MacArthur. The staff is friendly and helpful. I buy all my pizza here. No delivery service, but I enjoy supporting local business, talking to people, and getting pizza the old fashion way.
(5)East Bay P.
Four kids and 1 adult say: we loved the pizza (and the hot ranch dressing for the salad!). Decor is nice. Prices are a tad high (brings them down one star).
(4)Karen W.
A NY oriented pizza meets the bay area at Fist of Flour Pizza. We are working our way down the menu, starting with the "Classico" Best crust, with a perfectly seasoned tomato base and fabuoulously balanced cheeses, salami-pepperoni and crimini mushrooms, topped with fresh basil... yummm! Help!!! This is a Take-out --- but worth the trip The Yelp listing has the wrong number- better get it right as this is terrific pizza (510) 531-6367 fistofflour.com

I was very excited to try the pizza - as the other reviewers raved ... and I'm always happy to support local businesses. Everything was great - EXCEPT that the pizza was way too salty. The dough is a bit salty, which in and of itself is not bad. But then all the other ingredients were salty too - making the whole pie salty. This makes sense, probably, for food truck conditions, but not so much for the take-home box. Don't know if we'll buy another pie, tho I really want to like this pizza.
