I have been here a few times, once in the dining room, once in the bar and once at the cooking tables. I am rating my experience based on Monday night's dinner. I went with my boyfriends family and their friend who was visiting out of town. His mom loves Sapporo and they go there often. So often that the owner knows who she is and makes sure she gets her mai tai just the way she likes it lol. Anyways, we sat in the dining room next to the window, there wasn't much of a view as it was extremeley foggy and overcast. There was hardly anyone there and it was really quiet. So quiet that I thought there would be some music playing or something, I remember my last experience at the sushi bar, they had some music playing, maybe they stopped it. We were greeted by a nice server and we ordered sushi and his family ordered a bento box and some other sushi. We also ordered drinks, and I ordered the raspberry cooler? It tastes like raspberry vodka mixed it with something I don't know. It was okay. We first got our miso soup, then our salad. I don't know what they put in their dressing, but I love it. I always look forward to their salad when I come here because the dressing is really good. I want to say its like, I don't know a sesame maybe mixed with cream and something else, a hint of garlic? I have no idea but its super yummy. We then got our sushi, and my boyfriend got the Monterey roll, the one with filet mignon and I think the seaside roll. I got the green dragon roll and the hyashi roll. The green dragon was ok, I thought the sauce they would have put on top would be the regular eel bbq sauce but it wasn't, it was straight up bbq sauce. My boyfriend laughed when he tasted it and told me it was a sauce you would dip your nuggets in lol. Overall the experience was good, I mean good enough. They do have really interesting rolls and the service probably could be better.

My husband and I came here on our trip to Monterey Bay because I had a craving for sushi (as usual). We walked in and the staff was underwhelming. They had a regular dinner side and a hibachi grill side. We just wanted dinner but was confused about where to sit (shouldn't the waiter greet us, ask us if we wanted to sit in the hibachi grill side or not, then seat us?) So we kind of wandered around, walking into the hibachi grill room, walking back out, and finding a table on the regular side, while the waiter kind of followed us but not really. The restaurant was pretty empty as well for such a large space. The high ceilings made it feel even emptier and colder. The location is great though and the views are beautiful. My husband and I both ordered chirashis, and they were nicely presented and brought to our table in an acceptable amount of time. There wasn't much variety or choice in the menus. The fish was pretty fresh, but not mind-blowing in flavor. The portion was a little smaller than what I think is average. The sushi rice was okay, don't remember much about it. Our waiter was a little awkward, I guess, but she tried to be friendly and came around to check on us occasionally. One of the older men who worked there (possibly an owner or manager?) kept staring at me as I walked to the bathroom and back. It was a little weird. We ordered a tempura mochi ice cream for dessert and it was huge! Big enough for the two of us to share and too much for one person. It didn't look very pretty but it tasted good so I'm happy about that. I'm not sure if I'd come back here, but since there aren't many sushi restaurants in Monterey Bay and the fish here was pretty good, I might give this place another chance when I'm in the area.

Great view and interesting non-traditional sushi. We had the Best of Monterey, the Starfish, and two normal rolls - one futomaki and one tempura, with a cold Sapporo on the side. Fast, friendly service in an open space with high ceilings. Total bill: ~$55. This isn't a great place for romance but is wonderful for families and groups of friends. If you're the type who enjoys loud, possibly embarrassing displays of affection you should come here on your birthday. They put up a good show from what I saw at the tables next to our's.

I have had better food. Sushi is good, drinks are OK. Location is GREAT! Go ahead and try it. You won't be too disappointed if you don't expect too much. (they charge extra for fried rice).

My family and I enjoy this restaurant very much. We go there pretty often and we have never had anything to complain about. The chefs are always fun and entertaining. The servers are very friendly and efficient. Oh! My wife and I love their frozen margaritas!!!

How Rude!!!!!! Whats the point in making reservations!!!?? & HAIR IN MY FOOD!! I picked this place to surprise my brother for his birthday dinner. Made reservations for 12 ppl @ 5;30pm in the teppanyaki part of the restaurant. nine of us were there on time, waiting on 3 (who were arriving together. it was a surprise for my brother) When we arrived they wanted to seat 12 of us on ONE side of the hibachi. I was okay with it at first until i saw them setting up chairs, realized 12 on one side would be cramped so they suggested 2 tables. So here we are, spread out with 2 tables. comfy. We ordered appetizers to get started but obviously did not want to order our main entree yet until the whole party was there. They finally arrived around 5:45-5:50ish. BUT all in between that time, from when we arrived and until my brother got there ... it was question after question "ARE THEY COMING?" "HERE YET?" ALMOST HERE?" over and over again. this lady was stressing me out!!!!! she continued to say that if she knew the whole party wasn't there she shouldnt have sat us down. that she was getting in trouble (from the manager/owner i suppose?) because we haven't ordered our main entree yet & other people are waiting to be seated. (oh btw, there were TWO open hibachi tables as she's telling me this) We just got here and I already feel like we're being rushed out ;/ The manager who stands behind the cashier table kept looking over in our direction, stressed out, speaking to that lady..who kept approaching our table..with these "HERE YET?" questions. UMM..HELLO!!?.. I MADE RESERVATIONS! So anyway, my brother arrives...he chooses a spot to sit and the manager comes up behind him & rudely tells him not to sit there but to sit across the way (still in our group, just a different seat)...so they can have a different arty of 3 sit there. i really dont mind...but it was the way she approached him. just plain rude!!!! i understand it was a busy night but they really need to keep their composure. like seriously, do you know how to run your restaurant or what? this cant be the first busy night ever??!!?? miso soup / salad comes out...a couple bites in and woah..Lucky me, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HAIR IN MY FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GROSSSS!!!!!!!!!! it was quickly replaced but i didnt not even touch it after that incident. i only ate off the hibachi after. 1 star for an entertaining cook. & for being able to split the bill properly. tisk.tisk.

I definitely did NOT enjoy my experience here. My husband and I sat in the hibachi side of the restaurant & I ordered sushi & he had the hibachi steak. To make a long story short, everyone at the table got their food, finished it, and I still had not received my sushi. I inquired about my sushi twice & was told they were soo busy & my order had been lost. I was then told to me the second time asking that my sushi was "almost ready". The whole process of me getting my food took well over an hour. When I got my sushi it didn't look like what I thought I had ordered. I was so hungry at that point & felt so rushed that I began eating. After I took 2 bites (which was less than sub-par), the waitress told me she gave me the wrong order & took it away. She gave the table next to me (which showed up 30 min after we sat down) their sushi. It then took another 10 min. for the correct sushi to be brought out. My rolls were not fresh & were falling apart before I could pick them up. It was not a good experience. The only pleasant thing was that the hibachi chef was great & my hubby's steak was good, but overall the experience was ruined... :( We will not be returning here when we visit Monterey again.

This place has fantastic. Great sushi, nice service. The show on the grills is nothing new or amazing, but, still enjoyable. If you like sushi, this is the place to go. End of conversation.

The food's never bad, it's just not that good. I've been here on several occasions when my wife's friend and her husband get to pick the restaurant. He can't handle any spicy foods and seems to prefer things that are very bland which makes this place perfect for him. It's a good place to go if you just want to play it safe.

  • Aurora H.

We came in really late (9:30) The server was obviously anxious to close down, but maintained professional courtesy and maximum efficiency while still making sure we knew our presence was welcome. The food had very straight-forward presentation, but tasted very good. A spicy tuna roll, a dragon roll, two sodas, an appetizer and dessert still came out to less than $30.

Sushi is mediocre and service was decent. The big plus about this place is the location. Great views of the bay. It was the first sushi place I've eaten at since moving to Monterey. The search for "my favorite spot" will continue.

Brought the husband and friends here for DH's bday. Made a reservation 3 hours beforehand. Got a great table near the windows. This review is mainly for the Teppanyaki/hibachi as we have not ever had the sushi. Our service was prompt. The teppanyaki chef was hilarious and had tricks I had not seen before (like flipping fiery bowls into his hat). And the dishes he served were excellent. We each had different dishes including the salmon, filet mignon/lobster combo, steak/shrimp combos. All of us raved about them. The mother-in-law brought an ice cream cake, which the staff stored in their fridge until the end of the dinner. They brought the cake out and had the "band" sing to the DH--and their band is awesome! Loud and Asian-accented and a mad drum beat. Gotta hear to believe it. Totally would recommend for a special event or just great eats.

What can I say..... THE BEST DAMN SUSHI ANYWHERE!!!!! What more can you ask for? Not only is the food AMAZING BUT SO IS THE SERVICE!!! Just tried the new rolls Monterey sea, and never ending, very good!!! Don't forget to get sky's special called the best of the best!!!! A Flaming roll you won't forget!!!! Sean also has some really good specials like "Sean's special" that you will keep coming back for!!!! The seafood they put in the rolls is always fresh as it should be the ocean is their backyard:) I hate raw salmon but here the salmon is really fresh and never smells like fish which is a good indicator of only the highest quality fish you can get. Go here for great sushi, superior customer service, and an amazing view of our beautiful Monterey Bay!!! Perfect place for a special night out or any celebration!!! The owners are the sweetest people and they treat their employees just as well as they treat their customers!!! They also have the most energetic, skillful, and friendliest teppanyaki chefs EVER!!!! Go see for yourself you won't be disappointed!!!!

Went here for a birthday ! Great Celebration spot ! They actually sing to the birthday person, bang some drums and prensent them with a fruit boat with candle. Lovely spot over looking the Marina in Monterey. The food is ok, nothing special but we came for the Teppan chef. He was great ! Entertaining ! We had a fun time . One problem, the Resturant is upstairs (2 flights) not user freindly for handicapped ! They do have a lift (not elevator) but it was not working properly ! Sign is hard to see from the street and the entrance is in the rear of the building. Also there is no close handicapped parking..

After reading a review by a Yelper who knows whats what, we tried this place although we usually try to stay away from Fisherman's wharf. There were four people in our party so we were able to do a lot of sampling. We found that it's a 4 star if you are very selective on what you order, otherwise a 3 star. First the service is excellent, attentive but not intrusive. Good style. The sushi's are the good stuff, perfectly made and lots of choices. The tempura choices were not so good at all, a little soggy and greasy. So the chefs know how to do some things, and they do those right. Just know what you want before you go in and it is fine. Excellent sake as well. Pricing is good.

If you do not like giant exploding gas fireballs do not go here. My two year old does not like giant exploding gas fireballs so we will probably not be going here in the near future. However, in all fairness the servers were gracious and moved us to the sushi side of the restaurant. Once we were seated, however, we were promptly forgotten about and to flag down servers for any help and even our bill. That really is the story with this place, sometimes the service is two stars and sometimes its four and can even change in the same night. The food is usually a three or four. Nothing particularly stands out to me though in terms of what I have eaten. You pay for the view so go while it is daylight.

My family of 4 recently ate here, and we were content with the food but not overly impressed, but the service was terrible. It took forever for the server to come back with our bill despite her visiting other tables multiple times as we waited. The view is nice, but the service was not worth the price or a recommendation.

Came here with my wife an daughter. The view of the harbor was worth it alone. My daughter watched outside as a baby sea lion attempted several times to jump into a boat dock from the water. The food was very good and we ordered a nice variety. I recommend the ikura (salmon eggs) topped with quail egg. Many of the speciality rolls had crab In them wich my wife can't eat but managed to order something else equally good. Try the deep fried ice cream for desert. We will be back when in Monterey

Not my favorite sushi place in the Monterey area, but they do have the best view! Go for the lunch specials on a clear day and you'll have a beautiful view of the bay. Service is generally a little slow and the rolls are pretty standard.

Been to this place on a fairly regular basis and every time is delicious. Non-cooking table is a little calmer and never a wait. Friendly staff and descent service. Sushi is great and the beef is fabulous. Highly recommend. The view is an added bonus.

Food is pretty good. Wish they had a special with filet, chicken, shrimp, and tempura. If in Las Vegas try Geisha Steakhouse on Desert Inn and Sandhill(not the other locations) and get the Geisha special.

I don't bother with the hibachi - though the shows are great. I go straight for the window tables with a great view of the marina and the bay and start ordering Special rolls (The Best of Monterey, The Fantasy and The Green Dragon are all great) or the BEST teriyaki beef I've ever had. Make sure to order the last one medium-rare; it comes with crispy onion strips and, of course, miso and rice. Sapporo's prices are reasonable, and I've never ever left disappointed. Or hungry.

I've been here for dinner many times over the years and the chefs were sometimes hit or miss as far as the entertainment value. The food, however, has always been consistently yummy. Yesterday was the first time I brought my fiancee here and it was for lunch. The chef was very entertaining and personable, which is what you expect when you dine at a Tepanaki restaurant. The food was very good and the lunch menu is very reasonably priced. This was the first time I had been here for lunch and also the first time I have every tried their Bulgobi beef; it was actually better than a local Korean restaurant that we have been patronizing for several years!

The Food: Was okay. Nothing 'bad' about it per se, just nothing overwhelmingly delicious. They do serve uni, which my friend was quite excited about, but the menu is a little... unexciting for the price tag. We ordered a few of the specialty rolls (Starfish, Monterey) and a few basic rolls (spicy tuna, CA roll for the kid) and like I said, nothing bad, just nothing that made us go "WOW!" The Liquor: Meh. We ordered margaritas. Again, nothing traumatizing, just not delicious either. They were way way too sweet and there was way too much salt on the edge of the glass. Maybe here you're supposed to tip the salt chunks into the glass to off set the sweetness...? The Service: Was fine. Our server was polite and prompt, and all the dishes we ordered made it to the table quickly. The Price: Is what you'd expect from Warf 2. I'm glad we had a discount gift certificate from restaurant.com The Other: Here's my real "WTF!?" moment. For people's birthdays, they bring a bunch of musical instruments -including a giant drum- over to your table and sing and play. Very loudly. We were about halfway through our meal when the table next to us started the birthday shenanigans. I make a point of saying "halfway through our meal" so that the owner and staff understand how FURIOUS I was that the giant drum was placed right next to (and I mean literally RIGHT next to) my one year old daughter's head. You COULD have very quietly told us what was going to happen so I could have taken her outside, or at least not have put the drum right next to her. She was so good throughout the first half of our meal, letting mom have a meal out with friends. Then you A-Holes had to go and ruin it with your drum. Thankfully her mom has cat-like reflexes and covered her ears, so at least she's not deaf, but seriously? WTF. ONE star motherhumpers.

Sapporo is one of those places I can't handle but once a year, but when I go, it's always awesome. A word of advice. Go when you have time to kill, are in a good mood and don't mind a really loud dining experience. The hibachi is always fun and entertaining and delicious! I have never sat on the sushi side. I should do that some day! The restaurant has ample parking (paid, but come on, this Monterey) and great views.

Its a SUPER surprise to sit with six other people you dont know but its SOOO worth the awkwardness.... and I definitely plan on going there for my birthday :D with friends. One cook throws fire into little bowls and flips them onto his chef hat - he said the trick is called "bad idea" but GREAT idea for an AWESOME show for your guests. We enjoyed our meal and it was beyond expectation as well as our sushi was supreme. We had the Jalapeno Bomb and the BEST OF THE BEST - which was too spicy and not to my liking but my bf FINISHED it off and he LOVED IT! I can't wait to enjoy the atmosphere again it was beautiful.

We wanted to go to Benihana in Monterey, but it closed down! This was next on the list (similar feel and all) and we were not disappointed. My food was tasty, our chef was fun and we had a lovely harbor view! My only gripe was that the place seemed a little dirty and our table mates were awfully annoying (not the fault of the restaurant, though). I'd go back again, for sure!

My favorite sushi restaurant on the Monterey Peninsula! They have THE best California rolls!! Fried rice is to die for and the Bento Box is perfect when you're beyond hungry.

I love the hibachi side of the restaurant, but I did find that our chef was a little rude at times. This restaurant has great views and amazing food. For some reason I always find myself ordering more and more fried rice. I normally order the chicken but I tasted the shrimp off a friend and it was delicious. Next time I will be ordering the shrimp or even the steak!

Went here for my daughters 9th birthday. We had a great family night, great service, great food. We sat at the cooking tables, was a great show and food was cooked perfect. Daughter didn't stop smiling the whole time. They came out and sang happy birthday to her with drums and tamborine, they got the whole resturant to sing and clap. Can't wait for my son's birthday, we will be back. Not to expensive paid $130 for five people and that included a couple of beers. Prefer Sapporo over Benihana.

Ok. I LOVE uni. LOVELOVELOVE uni. I realize this little urchin is often elusive, so I call ahead to make sure my sushi restaurant of choice has it before heading over. If not, no worries, I'll keep calling around until I find a sushi restaurant that has some on hand. So: it's Sunday evening, and I feel a crazy strong uni craving coming on. I call Sapporo and inquire about their uni status. They say they have some = yay! Boyfriend and I head on over to indulge within the hour. We get seated, we're poured tea, and we order uni. Waitress happily trots back to the kitchen with our order, then returns a few moments later saying they're all out of uni. Um. But I called. You said you had some. You apparently don't understand that there is a little demon inside me that DEMANDS uni on a regular basis, and I chose YOUR restaurant because I CALLED and you SAID you had some! Boyfriend, sensing my panic, explained this politely to the waitress, who was somewhat apologetic and said "oh YOU were the ones who called?" and smiles and walks away. NOT cool. I was quite peeved since had they been honest about their uni status over the phone, I would have still reserved Sapporo as a nice sushi restaurant but moved along to another place that had uni on hand. I was REALLY disappointed, but I thought for sure since we had called, they would comp us somehow (maybe some free mochi? A little sake? SOMETHING?!). We ordered a few consolation rolls and some miso. When the bill came, nothing was done to apologize for the blunder. I was really disappointed. No, I don't carry around any kind of sense of entitlement, but I don't think it's too much to hope for some sort of apology in the form of a comp (customers LOVE comps as apologies) when you call ahead to make sure an item is there only to find it's NOT after you've driven over, sat down and ordered it. Waitress, if you're reading this, I apologize for the lousy tip I left you. I normally hate tipping less than 20%, but you did have the power to do something to make things right. But you didn't. Other than that, their sushi is average. You can find the same quality sushi at any sushi restaurant in Monterey. Blah udon, good Mongolian rolls. However, I've lost my faith in Sapporo.

I came here with family for my sister's birthday. We sat in the Teppanyaki area. The service was very good, our cook very entertaining (my son loved him). Food was good, although, the salmon didn't agree with one of my family members. The Tokyo Tea was ok, didn't agree with me or taste very good, although it wasn't because of the various types of alcohol they added, it just tasted weird. I've eaten here for years and have always liked it (love the sushi), last night just wasn't one of the best.

  • James D.

The second level location of the restaurant gives this place a great view of the harbor. I came in on a Saturday night, as a single drop-in, and they were able to get me seated at a table. I ate on the Hibachi side on this occasion. The food was good overall, but the lobster was a bit overdone. The chef we had didn't provide much of a show, unfortunately.

Apparently I am picky about sushi. Who knew? If I am having sushi, there are a few things that I need to have an enjoyable experience: -Fish that does not smell fishy -Low Sodium Soy Sauce -Amenable servers who can answer my questions (after all I do NOT claim to be an expert) -Rolls that are creative (This does not mean I only enjoy rolls that are doused in sauce and deep fried -- but I would like the roll menu to expand beyond California Rolls and Spicy Tuna Rolls) You would be surprised by how hard this is to find outside of Sacramento. I mean, I AM SURPRISED how hard of a time I have had finding good sushi when we are out of town on the weekend. Enter Sapporo. Friends promised us that we would have an enjoyable experience and lo and behold -- it was great! Fantastic environment, beautiful views of the wharf, and delicious and fresh fish along with creative rolls that I had never seen or tasted before -- including a roll with grilled white tuna that absolutely tasted like a juicy stead -- except it was fish. It was like nothing I have ever tasted. And I was relieved. A few people told us, "oh that place is so touristy" -- and maybe so. But we had no problems getting a table on a Friday for lunch, our server was a delight and made great recommendations, I tasted something new, and THEY HAD LOW SODIUM SOY SAUCE! Finally.

My family came here for my mom's Bday dinner, we sat at a dining table where the cook prepares your meal in front of you...our cook was comical & talented!! I ordered the shrimp/chicken combo; the shrimp was delicious but the chicken was a little dry - there are plenty of sauces to make it tastier though! We also had gyoza & fried shrimp/vegetable tempura, it was good! They sang The happy bday song & brought out a cute cut up pineapple as a cake for her! They sent us out with a photo of my entire family, i would go again, it was a great experience!!

I've been here a number of times and had good service and okay food... nothing spectacular... the service is good and the location is great, especially after a day of diving... However, I won't be going there again... due to the fact that I was served a hibachi style dinner that had a fly swimming in the bottom of it... the staff immediately took it away, offered me another option and didn't charge me for any of the meal... Turned my stomach, but they did all they should have done to correct it without me having to ask them to and did it quickly...

The sushi here was decent and the bento boxes were reasonably priced. I'm not often impressed with sushi restaurants namely because 1) living in the Bay Area has spoiled me and 2) I don't know any better. Service could have been A LOT better. We were pretty ignored and had to consistently ask for our drinks. My friend's dish came about a full 10 minutes after ours...and it was just sushi! After kayaking, this is definitely a nice break with spectacular views. just wish the service was a little better.

  • R D.

Maybe its cause I'm a local or cause I haven't really had "good" sushi but this place rocks my pretty green socks! The service here is excellent, yes a little slow but they keep your tea pot hot. For the best sushi sit at the sushi bar in front of the sushi man Shawn. He makes it the best and if he has the time he'll ask you to try some of his fresh ideas. The sashimi here is fresh (and being by the wharf doesn't always guarantee freshness or quality) but its not my thing (shall I saw newbie?). Its the sushi I come for and the cucumber or ginger salad. Yummers much? Try not to come during their peak hours. You won't get the greatest service or the greatest food. But ain't that what happens at most restaurants? I've never had their their teppan-yaki so I can't tell you anything about that but go for the sushi! Its a sushi restaurant... Why waste money and time on anything else?

On Saturday, I went to this restaurant to celebrate a friend's birthday. Having eaten here before, I have not had problems and thought that their sushi was exceptional. Until this past Saturday (03/20/2010). The twelve of us were seated the back of the restaurant on the cooking table where the chef was a total d-bag. He started off with a race joke about Mexicans. He often banged his utensils against the cooking surface incredibly loud and startled many of us, several times. His fire show was also excessive, almost literally burning off our eyebrows. This finally culminated with some show he was putting on where he scraped the hot firey surface and splashed HOT OIL in the direction of my girlfriend and I - at which point the raging brown man in me came out and let this m.f-er have it. He apologized and settled down. I probably won't be coming back here.

yum....i love sapporos. The teppan yaki here taste way better than Benihanas! We celebrated several birthdays here and they bring out the taiko drum, sing, give you a pineapple dessert and a present! Now for the table menu, my husband loves their teriyaki beef dinner. They use NY steak for the beef and it's very tender and juicy. The tempuras are average. I like their creamy ginger salad dressing. Sushi is a hit or miss, but for the most part it's good. Definitely one of the better tasting Japanese restaurants in Monterey.

  • Kyr L.

Grab a window table and order up a Sapporo! This place is great. Neat atmosphere and awesome views. The sushi is tasty and fresh. The Deluxe dinner for two is what my girlfriend and I always get. $60 for the platter, but just enough for two hungry people: A large platter with nigiri, maki, and sashimi, with garnishes. Then sip some hot sake while watching the sunset over Monterey Bay. Next time we're in Monterey we'll surely go back.

I love sushi!!! Well, cooked sushi anyways. This place is by far the best that I've had since I got here. The prices aren't too bad as well. I love "The Best of Monterey" which has Fillet Mignon around it and "Seaside" has a delicious crunch to it. This place has such a great view as well.

Birthday's are always special and cause for celebration. So to celebrate my aunt's birthday, the family and I decided to eat at Sapporo Sushi and Steakhouse. Entertaining watching my shrimp and steak grill and fry right in front of my eyes. Service was excellent. All dinners come with mushroom soup and salad, a large pot of green tea to share, and a funny chef skillfully cooking the food. The steak was a great balance of juice and flavor, served with grilled zucchini, onions, broccoli, mushrooms, fried rice and eggs. Shrimp was done just right seasoned lightly with soy sauce and lemon. Of course each main dish came with dipping sauces of chili and peanut. As part of the birthday treatment, our waiters brought out a fresh pineapple, and sang happy birthday using a taiko drum. Very very memorable.

I stopped by for sushi while friends were eating a full dinner. Their experience reminded me of Benihana back in Texas and the chefs were doing well with the "normal" tricks, and a few new ones. I had a spicy tuna roll and was happy with both the price and quality. One person in our group was a "newbie" and the chef walked her through all the sauces, tips, and played his tricks towards her. Overall - happy.

Good location, food good, service...ok but they just ignored us for the most part, not helpful at all. We ordered the sashimi plate with 3 rolls and it was good. For the tip I literally just doubled the tax when usually I do at least 20%. Our server was friendly but seemed to wanna rush us out of there and never came to check in or anything. Which is fine, but you don't deserve a good tip for that.

First time here for a bday this past Saturday! I had no idea what to expect when I came in the doors! Ok maybe I am just too critical but this place is too much like Benihana's! Same tricks....same attitude chefs...and our waitress ruined two bottles of wine trying to pop out the cork! :( Overall the food was ok too. The maguro was actually the best part of the whole meal...the fish was super fresh! But the chef overcooked our Hibachi chicken and didn't even speak good english. :( My meal for one person was $40...not surprising because Benihana's charges the same but I wish our chef was more entertaining to make up for burnt chicken and emptying my wallet! Positives: The decor on the inside is very nice and it has a beautiful view of the water..Very romantic!

My husband took me here for my birthday and I really enjoyed it. I had the hibachi steak dinner and it was yummy. I loved the harbor views, but some of the decor was a little outdated. If this place had modern decor and dimmer lights it would have been a 5-Star rating. The dinner comes with a soup, salad, rice, veggies and green tea, and of course the fantastic show on the grill. I will be back.

For our final night in Monterey, six family members went to Sapporo for Sushi. I should have known there would be issues when I called to make the reservation and I had to spell my last name 5 times. We frequently eat sushi and this food was less than satisfactory and tasted day-old. The service was horridly slow. After ordering steak for one of our family members, we had to ask for a steak knife 3 times and finally get up and go get one ourselves. The angry waitress actually chased us outside to tell us that we needed to leave more tip money than we chose to. Now we are sorry we left as much as we did. With tvs on in the restaurant and the lovely setting of being on the marina, this restaurant is confused about their identity and their level of service. It was too noisy and we felt like we were in a cafeteria. We would NEVER go back!

Went here for my birthday, and the BEST birthday experience, ever! They sang and beat drums. The food was top in its class. Living in Hawaii for a big part of my life, I was really missing that authentic taste. Being in the culinary field, I am very particular and don't often feel the need to even bother with a review, but when I do. I want the people to know where to go. This is the best food for your money I have had int he entire Monterey area, thus far. Enjoy!

Sushi was average (I prefer Ocean Fish or Harumi), but you get free miso soup. They also had my favorite sparkling sake, Hana Awaka, so that made me happy. Table felt kind of greasy which I though was weird. You also have to pay to park in the lot below.

3.5 stars Okay so I pre-ate and pre-cocktailed so there was no way I was going to handle a big ass 6 course tepanyaki dinner. What I did handle was a fabulously crafted dirty martini and sushi. The sushi was very good and the tuna sashimi was fresh, delicious and creamy. (Not sure if I should be writing the words creamy with a description of tuna) Anyhow, the rest of the group (13) got the full tepanyaki dinners. I got the leftovers - yeah. That was pretty cool, a full plate of extra fried rice and a few veggies and shrimps! Everyone seemed satisfied with their meals and I thought the prices were on point for a restaurant such as this. Minuses - slow slow slow service - I swear to you we waited 20 plus minutes for service. At least we had drinks but still - it was bad. The restaurant - It wasn't bad but it wasn't memorable - at least we had great views of the sea lions and birds......for whatever that is worth

I had an eel roll for starters, probably some of the best sushi I have had. My husband had sashimi and he thought it was great. All the dinners come with soup and salad. The soup is just seasoned broth with mushrooms and scallions (which is exactly what I like at Japanese restaurants, instead of miso soup...yuck) and the salad has the same dressing that all Japanese restaurant have. There was a bit too much dressing on mine but still good none-the-less. My husband and I both had The Samurai which is steak, shrimp and scallops. I opted for chicken instead of shrimp. The steak we both had rare (which is exactly like we like it), well seasoned and cooked perfectly. It's a thin cut so you probably wont want it cooked too much more than medium-rare or else it will become tough. My husband lover the shrimp and the chicken was cooked perfectly and juicy. They actually forgot our scallops but once we told them they fixed it immediately. They gave us 6 scallops each to fix the mistake and they were big and amazing! We ate at the hibachi table (where they cook the food in front of you). I have been to MANY Japanese restaurants before and the guy who cooked our food was by far the best entertainer I have seen and a great cook to boot! Wonderful service. We went for our anniversary and I wouldn't have picked anywhere else.

I love it, it is one of my favorite ones in monterey! Everytime I've been in there the waiters seem never to charge us for all of our rolls, maybe b/c me and my boyfriend never know what to eat and we tend to erase items and check other items on the list... Awesome rolls!!

Where to start!?!? Great views! Even at night, it is very pretty to sit and watch the marina. The food- not that great. I would say so-so. Nothing fantastic, nothing special. The service- down right embarrassing. We were a party of six, with one Birthday. When our server was informed of the Birthday, he rudely asked if we wanted the $7.50 Birthday Desert. It is a cup of fruit and comes with a souvenir picture, as well as a Japanese song. All for the low price of 7.50. Umm, when did places start charging for birthday? Anyway, service was just RUDE. He would drop off our stuff and walk away without checking on us, or even asking if we wanted anything else. He actually rolled his eyes when we flagged him down to get more water. Granted we were seated at about 8:45, and sat there till ten. They must be very strict at their closing time. At 9:30 we were informed "no more orders allowed" and that we had to leave soon. Not even a last call for food, just a barked order of "no more order allowed". Sheesh. We checked before we cane into make sure they were open till ten. They need to put on the door that they want everyone gone at ten. There was one extremely nice guy who kept coming over to check on us. Not sure who he was, but he was the only thing that brought this review up to a 2 star.

I've been here several times....Twice it was with a large group of people and we sat at a cooking table. The first time was good for this style of food. I wasn't wowed by the food or service (or lack there of) but apparently some of my friends were because one chose it for her birthday as well. We were told that we had to be there right at the time of our reservation or they would give our table away...fair enough. We all (party of 12) got there at least 15 minutes prior to the time. When asked how long it would be she the hostess said about 20 minutes...this turned into 40 MINUTES. Not a great start!! I ordered sushi this time instead of the chop chop fry meal they cook in front of you hoping this would be better...Ehh not so much! I went there one last time...middle of the day just for drinks and an appetizer...BAD BAD idea!!! I had some fried shrimp thingy which by the way tasted great going down...but not so much coming back up later that night.http://www.yelp.com/writeareview/biz/BoNfdRR-vL0ej4th6vdorw# star I will NEVER EVER EVER go there again...BLAH

Pretty Good! Beautiful view and nice seating area. My mother and I went there for lunch the other day and we had a pleasant time. The vegetable tempura was crisp and not soggy and the sushi was fresh. The service was decent. Servers were fast and friendly. Nice.

I've been here numerous times. We've had many work parties here. It's a great place for parties, nice and big. I brought my niece here and embarrassed the hell out of her when they came out and sang. The hibachi side is better than Benihana's in my opinion, a little cheaper and the views are much better. Usually I just come here for the sushi. Not because it's the best sushi I've ever had but because they don't close between 2-5pm like many other places on the peninsula. The sushi is actually pretty good though. It's always been fresh and flavorful, rolls are unique and they also have a bit of Korean food on the menu too. The Bulgogi is yums.

Came here for the cousin's b-day dinner! Good food, small portions and pricey. Overlooks the beautiful Monterey Bay, but the biggest downfall was the $15 it would have cost for the staff to sing happy b-day to the guest of honor. It's still pretty cool that you watch them make your food with all their fancy trickery!

Great Family Restaurant!! The service was great and they were very accomodating to our young family of three children under the age of 6. They brought out the special chopsticks, and made sure we didn't have to wait too long for the chef to come out to the table. The girls loved their first Japanese table cooking experience! The food was good and staff very friendly. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Excellent entertainment by the chefs. One chef will cook your meal in front of you and do lots of crazy things. It's right on the warf, so there is a cool view of the marina/bay. Their Tokyo Teas are the best! I wouldn't go anywhere else. The fillet and shrimp with their fried rice is my favorite. Don't pass it up on your next trip to Monterey Bay!

This place has received many raving reviews. I'm not sure if my visits have been on off nights or if this place has lost it's touch. The view from the grill tables aren't too bad. You can see the Marina and the neighboring beach. I find the food to be subpar and not the "authentic quality Japanese" food some Yelpers mentioned. Service from the wait staff is spotty, there're friendly at least. The chefs always seem rushed and the show is extremely short. I wait longer for them to show up then I do to receive my food. One issue I have is I always receive the shrimp "appetizer" after I've started my entree. In my opinion Benihanas up the street has better entertainment and food at a competitive price. The only thing this place has going for it is the view and maybe their birthday song. This restaurant may have been something in the past but I'll be passing on it in the future.

This restaurant was recommended to us at last minute when we were traveling through Monterey. I've been to a few hibachi style places before and think they're so much fun! We went on a Monday around 5pm and it was rather quiet. Our waitress was very friendly, took our order with no problems and made sure to check up on us. Our seats were right next to the windows overlooking the ocean which made our dinner pretty special. Our chef was pretty much the only lively one in the restaurant, so we were pretty lucky there, the others seemed quiet and not as playful. We enjoyed his jokes, tricks (which by the way I'm apparently awful at catching flying food), stories, and everything tasted pretty darn good after it was finished. Husband had the shrimp which looked and smelled fresh, and I had the hibachi chicken which was also very good. Your meal also comes with a salad that has their own crafted salad dressing on top, a tasty mushroom soup and a shrimp appetizer. I was expecting to pay a pretty penny with all the food you get, but this place is shockingly reasonable. My only complaint was that I noticed the dishes can be a tiny bit dirty, but that was fixed by swapping plates. Other than that, if you make sure you come here without extremely high expectations and a picky attitude, you're going to get an entertaining way to eat your dinner with an amazing view and a free picture of yourself and company if it's your first time. Can't complain and will probably eat here again when visiting next time!

Great sushi, love the Best of Best Roll, if you sit at the sushi bar the soup and little salad is complementary. If you sit on the cooking side they have lunch specials for $10.00 and under. Same concept as Bennihana but I think it's better food. Friendly staff, killer ocean view, a little pricey like the rest of the wharf but all worth the $$.

Had sushi rolls and drinks. Great view, not crowded, pleasant and prompt service, and not unreasonably priced. Oyster shooter was surprisingly delicious and far from typical. We loved this place and can't wait to go back!

We came to monterey for a trip away and found Sapparo after a long days drive with 7 of us. it was ok on the sushi side of the restaurant. but the grill idea was happening. Maybe next time? hummm? service. waiter 3.5, other service 2.5. food 3 views 5

We decided to try this place at the last minute since we were already at Fisherman's Wharf. The food was "ok" (middle of the road) per my taste preferences. I ordered the chicken teriyaki which was plentiful. It was seasoned well but was missing something. The service was of as well. Our server was "doing her job" by serving us but was not being friendly as we would have liked. In short, this restaurant is not bad if you're craving some Japanese food but it will not "wow" you. If you don't mind driving a little bit more, I would suggest checking out another place.

Regardless of the nice views of the pier and the ok to decent food, the service was downright awful. The hosts didn't seem to want to be at the restaurant and had on no uniforms/restaurant attire of any kind - just regular street clothes. When we walked in, no one paid attention to us for a good 5 minutes. Our waiter was kind and attentive, but we had to wait around 20-30 minutes for him to even show up at the table, and these first impressions left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended!). As for the food, the steak salad is quite tasty - nice grill to the steak, though there was a bit too much salty dressing on the salad. The seafood salad is also good, and there are pretty generous portions for all dishes. Would recommend the Red Dragon roll with shrimp tempura, avocado, and spicy tuna with eel sauce. Note: Fisherman's Wharf charges for parking.

We wanted to eat Japanese food for New Year's Eve, so I jumped on the Yelp app to find a good place in town. There aren't many "fancy" sit-down Japanese restaurants in downtown Monterey, but from what I read, Sapporo seemed like it had promise. (Reservations are available for teppanyaki, but not regular seating, FYI.) We showed up expecting a wait, but we were seated immediately. The menu is pretty complete: they serve sushi rolls, nigiri, dinner plates, udon, steak and more. I tried the teriyaki chicken plate and red dragon roll. The teriyaki chicken plate came with a side salad (excellent ginger dressing), miso soup, rice and steamed vegetables. They did a good job of bringing the food out gradually, so we had something to whet our stomachs while we waited for the main course. The chicken was cooked perfectly. All white meat (breast) with good grill flavor, and I liked that it hadn't been marinated in sauce before cooking. It might've been the best teriyaki chicken I've ever had! The red dragon roll was pretty good, but not particularly memorable. The other person in my party had the steak salad. She said it was perfectly cooked--tender without being rare--and not overly seasoned. The reason I didn't give Sapporo 5 stars is the service. The waiter always seemed to be rushed, and he didn't always understand what we were saying. He forgot a couple of things and we had to remind him later. (We also visited the restaurant on a different, non-holiday day and the waitress was similarly rushed and she also forgot things.) It's kind of a pity because I would hate for people to hate on Sapporo because of the service when the food is worth trying.

Off the couple of blocks or a quick 4 minute run from the harbor :-) Great location overlooking the bay and great food. We are very picky of the Teppan style of cooking but Hartty did a great job making our food and it was divine. We ate everything we ordered. Will definitely come back.

What a mistake . Food was disgusting . Very poor quality , no flavor .Restaurant is dirty , and smells disgusting . Bar area was dirty as well, my beer mug was dirty . I only came to this place because benihana was closed . Never again . Tip ; skip this dump and go to Benihanas

While the appetizers and customer service were good, the sushi rolls weren't well made and the ingredients didn't taste right. We got Steamed Gyoza, Edamame, and a few rolls, as well as tea. Everything was good except the rolls.

Great food and service. I've been to many Japanese restaurants and Sapparo's is by far the best I have ever had. The amazing views of the Monterey Fishermans Wharf makes it that much more enjoyable. Order anything on the menu and you won't be disappointed.

You can't beat the setting. Sapporo overlooks the Marina in Monterey, right at the footing of Wharf #2. I was impressed with the enormity of the interior. So many restaurants in Monterey are crowded spaces. Here you can spread your elbows out if you choose. We were celebrating my wife's birthday but the waiter did not offer anything in the way of congratulations or offer a complimentary dessert for later. Frankly I believe he was just plain hard of hearing. It's okay, I'm there too brother so peace on that. I had the dinner Bento Box. Here we go. The teriyaki chicken and sauce was exemplary, the salmon in the same sauce was well prepared and tasty. The fried gyoza tasted alright but kind of dry. The tempura was sad. It did not come hot to the table. This was a disappointment. The steamed rice wasn't steaming either. My wife had the sirloin steak and she complained it came to the table warm to cold. The sliced potatoes in the grilled onion mix were pretty much uncooked. I think the appropriate description is raw. Really. We informed the waiter but like I said above he is either hearing impaired, plays deaf or did not care. Oh well. Our son ordered the Yakisoba. It's hard to tell if it was good, hot or even uncooked. He doesn't complain. He's on automatic. If food comes he eats it. I don't know if that indicates he is used to bad food, (ie a lifetime of eating my cooking) or he doesn't have functional taste buds. He said it was good... One decided positive was the gyoza appetizer. The dumplings were thinner than most and tasted better than most. The two pricey sushi dishes we added as appetizers were neither spectacular or horrible. We liked the setting and the space so we will likely return. Here is my plan for any future visit. I will order the teriyaki chicken dinner and tea or a beer (or both) and enjoy watching the boats move in and out of the marina. The food (aside from the Teriyaki Chicken) was a 2 on this night but the setting and spaciousness inside is a 5.

Extremely friendly and attentive staff. Their selection of rolls is plenty and they are all DEEEELISH. The hotate nigiri is just divine. My husbands caddy recommended this place and he wasn't kidding about the wonderful noms in here. Also, you won't break the bank we had two apps, four rolls and nigiri and a ton of tea and it was only 75$. So yeah. Eat here. NOW.

My wife and I have been eating at Sapporo's for at least twelve years. We've never had a bad experience, and each visit is consistent with the last. Staff is always very friendly and professional. Majority of the staff has been there for many years. They must enjoy their job and get treated well by the owners. The cooking tables are entertaining and the food is excellent. At the cooking table I usually order the scallops and chicken, wich is always served with delicious fried rice and vegetables. The sushi always taste fresh, and the portions are generous. Sean at the Sushi bar has been preparing sushi for years, and he does it well. The impression he leaves has customers returning often. The owners of the establish are very nice people. There is a Benihanas close by, but I find it to be mediocre and more expensive. Recommended to anyone who enjoys sushi, cooking tables and the beautiful view.

went here today with 13 other people for my friends' birthday. I ordered the shrimp & chicken with fried rice. they almost burned my friend from the start with a crazy fire & they never gave me my chicken. they gave it to the person next to me who didn't order anything but a water. so I told them & they took off only $2 of a $24 meal. I didn't get half of my order & they only took $2 off. and they added tip to it. I'm very upset right now.

This is our first time came to this restaurant. I was amazed by the beautiful view right after I walked in. We wanted to try sushi but didn't like the menu, so we moved inside to try Teppanyaki. We had a lot of fun at the cooking table. The chef who cooked for us was very skillful. Love his volcano fire show. He's funny and kids friendly. Only one thing though, the food was a little too salty, otherwise, it's a five star.

We stopped in here for a snack as we arrived in Monterey for the night. The place was empty but we did arrive toward the end of the evening so I won't knock them for that. The menu was a little confusing...they only have their expensive, special rolls on the menu alongside their steakhouse items and specialty cocktails. I started to feel concerned that we couldn't order a simple California roll or piece of nigiri. Finally I realized that the "regular" rolls were on the paper, write-in menus tucked into the napkin holder. Once we figured that out we were able to order some food. The rolls were good, fish portions were generous but the rolls were a bit sloppy. Not rolled tightly, a few pieces fell apart as you tried to handle them with your chopsticks. Other than that, not a bad place for a quick roll. I'd probably try another place before going back here but wouldn't rule out another visit.

My husband and I came here for Christmas dinner (I know), since I wanted sushi over Chinese food. I thought we were so clever and that we would be some of the only people there. It was beyond packed. And we arrived at 5:30 mind you. Packed. We quickly decided to sit at the sushi bar. We were seated immediately, and within a few minutes our drinks were brought. We ordered with the sushi chef....and everything blew us away! Our waiter was courteous and efficient. The beer was oh-so-cold and the sake oh-so-hot. I had read a few bad reviews regarding the quality of the sushi....but it was lovely. Very fresh, nicely rolled. The experience completely dispelled the prejudice I had regarding Sapporo's. The price was fantastic as well. We ate our fill, and I imbibed a large sake and beer. It came to 64.00. This is regarding the sushi/sushi bar.

Wish I could give it 0 stars, they don't deserve any. Ordered sushi with crab, when it got to the table, we discovered it had artificial crab. Super upset, that stuff it terrible tasting. After saying something to the waiter, he blamed me saying I should have asked. what the heck?? If a menu says crab, I expect real crab. He then proceeded to try taking 10% off. I said no, I want the whole roll taken off, it's horrible. He finally did that. Will never go back. Our other roll was only ok tasting, had way to much spice and it mentioned nothing about spice in the description.

Nice views! Claim to serve Japanese food but entrees are various hybrid, of Italian , chinese, ....., favors and food not very good. Always ordered Chirashi to gauge fish freshness. Their Chirashi was made with not very fresh fish and marginally eatable. The waiters seemed stressed, running frantically around, but nice. Suggest if looking for good Japanese food, go else where! However view of harbor is exceptional.

(: Boba-Foodaholic Says :) My order: Oh Boy + Hibachi Grills So I usually go here for special occasions to eat sushi or grills. When we entered this place, people greet us politely saying hello and led us to a seat. If you really like sushi, I think their specialities are nigiri or hibachi because my parents don't like this place. However, I really like Oh! Boy sushi but it is little spicy for me since the sauce is kinda spicy. Furthermore, I don't recommend the Hibachi grills because the food is not my taste and it is overly priced.

    (3)
  • Danny C.

Imagine Benihana, but a little more local in feeling. It's pricey for sure, but a great experience. I mean, I didn't catch any of hibachi grill items that were thrown into my mouth, but I still had a great time. Go for either chicken or scallops on the grill, and definitely get the fried rice, not the steamed. You'll thank me later. Now, you're going to get a salt lick, so be prepared for that. These guys don't let up on the soy sauce and salt, but you'll have fun regardless, and then you'll need a few days to pass all the sodium from your body. Your poor kidneys. I haven't had any of the sushi, so I can't speak to that, but this place has a great view of the wharf, and if it's your birthday, they bring out the taiko and sing happy birthday to you. And they give you a pineapple boat of fruit! Certainly a fun time.

Horrible! When we first stepped into the restaurant, no one was there to greet or seat us. The sushi chef wound up just telling us to sit anywhere and just pointed in a general direction. Once seated the server just said "hi" rudely and plopped two menus on our table. After a long wait, the server rudely asked if we wanted something to drink. We were done and left the restaurant. On the way out, we told the sushi chef our server was rude and he did not appear to care. We won't ever come to this place again.

Gross and over priced. I swear we tasted miracle whip in one of the rolls. The downtown Sacramento location kills this one!

Came here on 1/4/15 for lunch for our get away anniversary. Our waiter was the bald headed guy. He doesn't seem like he wanted to be there. Took our order and came back with food & that's was it. Don't know why I even tipped him. Really no services at all. I ordered the teriyaki chicken lunch special & the spider rolls. No complaints there. Great view over the pier and good food. But services need some improvements.

Horrible !!! Over charged for mediocre sushi that taste like it came from Safeway. Too fishy and poor quality. Better sushi establishments in the area. View is not worth the taste

I always try to come here when I'm in the area! I love that it's right next to the wharf but I don't really like paying for parking! I also love the hibachi style cooking they offer and they also have regular tables of you just want to order off their menu. But don't think this is a knock off version of a Benihana because this place has a totally different feel. It's more comforting and relaxed. The prices are also very reasonable and the food tastes great! They sushi and regular menu items are also really good. Usually only one of either the sushi or hibachi is good, but here you can't go wrong with ordering from either! The service is also really good!

After a long hiatus we ventured to Sapporo tonight. 1. Dead on a Thursday night in main dining room. 2. No candles out on tables. Not welcoming. 3. Soft shell crab roll delivered with nary any sscrab, unlike in the past which had a beautiful presentation with tempura legs akimbo. Mostly lettuce. 4. Rainbow roll with fish cut über thin - ala cheap all you can eat sushi joint. 5. Talapia does not belong in a Japanese restaurant and please don't try to tell me that it is yellowtail. Disgusting. 4. California roll with masago for kids came with no masago. All in all, pretty mediocre once again. Sticking with sushi time in seaside.

Very popular place. Even with a reservation it was going to be a long wait in order for us to be able to sir at the grills. So we just decided to sit at the sushi bar since we where hungry. The staff is very friendly. It can get a little loud at times when the drums and signing comes from the grill area. but it is a very up lifting atmosphere and good food.

We had gone in with out a reservation knowing they are pretty busy on a Sat. We decided a hour wait for the food entertainment was too long so we sat on the sushi side. Well we were seated pretty quick which was nice BUT then we just sat there waiting for anyone to even just offer water. Made eye contact with the waiter that was helping the table right next to us and he avoided it and kept walking not even just a reassurance of a waiter will be right with you. After 10-15 mins we were done and left. Really horrible service for a place where mostly tourists go.

The place definitely needs a new look. The service was very friendly but the ambience was not good. The food was okay. My husband got the rib eye steak and I got teriyaki it was alright. I would not recommend it.

I like this place. I came in for my eighteenth birthday and nineteenth and I had a blast. The show the chef provides for the meals is entertaining! I enjoy coming here. The service is great! The atmosphere here is amazing. The food is good!!! I do recommend this place....bring your friends and family!!

Went here with the family, and was had high expectations given the above average ratings on yelp but unfortunately was thoroughly disappointed. Ordered a plate of nigiri -- uni, salmon, tuna, and sweet shrimps. Also ordered the red bull roll and fantasy roll. Other dishes the table ordered was the rib eye steak and the chicken teriyaki. The salmon and tuna was on par, and the sweet shrimp was good. However, the uni definitely was not fresh giving it a metallic taste. I would not waste your stomach or money on the uni again. The ribeye steak was an utter fail and the chicken teriyaki well... Was chicken teriyaki. Not sure how anyone can not cook a ribeye steak well but it tasted rubbery and had an over due taste to it. Yes I know, ordering a steak in a sushi restaurant. Maybe that was asking for too much from a 3.5 star restaurant. Service was okay but nothing extraordinary as we had to order drinks multiple times. I'm sure it's a good restaurant but I will say this is the first time yelp has truly failed me.

My father came into town and he got my wife and thinking of delicious Japanese food... something we hadn't had in a while. Well, we decided to check out Sapporo after having passed it so many times on the way to Presidio of Monterey. The location is great as it over looks the water by fisherman's wharf, the only downside is that you have to pay for parking. When we were seated there wasn't a large line or dinner rush so it was perfect with our newborn baby in tow. They were able to secure a nice table in the corner to place the car seat in. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful with the menu, even made a special request from my father due to his dietary restrictions. The food itself was decent. nothing extraordinary. While I completely loved their sushi bomb (jalapeno with spicy tuna and more)I wasn't the most thrilled with their starfish named sushi roll as it was too salty. Other than that I found that the whole family enjoyed their meals and were pretty content. Would return if the conditions were right.

Let me be honest. $16 for grilled chicken with rice and vegetables is a bit steep for me, especially since were not talking about enough food to bring any home at the end. I understand you're paying for the show but is a show worth that much? Maybe it is to some but not to me. I will say that their salad dressing is one of the best I've had on a salad of that type. The dinner says it comes with shrimp appetizer which is two shrimp in my case and it did not come before the food so i wouldn't consider that an appetizer. In the end the food in no way justifies the price. The taste was just mediocre at best and with the rice, veggies, and chicken all coming off of the grill at different times you either eat everything separate or you deal with some cold food and some hot. I won't be back simple as that

we walked in at lunch time, 9 of us including 2kids. we were seated right away though they will lure you to tables that has griddles, the other half of the place has tables that dont have it if you want a private and quiet meal. They cook your food in front of you, with entertainment flair! eggs spinning and tossing in the air, food flicked aiming it to customers mouth especially to kids. flame intentionally burst in the griddle as he cooks, onions stacked to make "volcanoes". etc. steak tasted ok, vegetables that came with it is ok, fried rice is meh. sushi and sashimi dishes they do not make it infront of you, only the steaks and anything that can be stir fried. I had the sashimi, fish not fresh, rice not cooked for sushi quality. we tried the "best of the best" sushi, it came in a flaming hot plate, bagged in foil,it is the only dish that tasted good enough. The only thing that is commendable is the location and the view, its on the 2nd floor and you have a 180 degree view of the bay. In the end you will feel ripped off, the food is not good, if you consider the price its not even decent. you are paying for the entertainment, if you are into that kinda stuff, our cook is not even engaged unlike what we see in other tables, where some are having fun, so it also depends on the cook. I cant recommend this place. very pricey, almost 30 per person.

So much fun!! I had never been to a hibachi / Teppanyaki kind of place before. I had wanted to go to another place but prices were too high for my budget taste. I had found out about this place and was surprised to see how inexpensive it was. I was scared because they say you get what you pay for but took a chance anyways. I have to say I had such a great time here. The service was great. The chef made the experience so much fun I was smiling and laughing the whole time. Then the food was cooked. I had hibachi steak and my daughter had the chicken. The meat was very tender and very flavorful. It was so good. To top it off we had ocean view seating and a fried tempura ice cream dessert. The whole experience was great but I suggest you get there early as it starts filling up by noon. I can't wait to go again!!

I have been here once before years ago and just went again 3 weeks ago. My guy and I went for an early dinner on a weekday so there weren't a lot of customers there. We were allowed to choose our own seat and sat by the window. The waiter was very attentive, taking away our empty dishes right away and refilling our waters without even having to ask. We had a pleasant experience.

Hands down favorite restaurant in Monterey. Reasons? 1.) The service is fantastic. Eventually the waiters know you, and the sushi Chef knows your order. Sean ( I think he's the main sushi chef) is the best. Tell him what you like and he'll make a roll for you (and I've never been disappointed. My favorites are Forever Sean, and the Best of the Best roll.. It comes out on fire! Awesome) 2.) the food. The rolls seem a bit pricey, $13 for a roll, but it is worth it. The rolls are big, and filling. One roll and a couple pieces of sashimi and I'm done, roll me out. 3.) the view is incredible. It's right next to the water (duh it's on a wharf) and you get a great view no matter what time of day you go. I prefer going at night to see the lights on the water but that's just me. I LOVE this place, I go fairly regularly, and would recommend it to anyone. You won't find a better sushi place in Monterey.

Good view over the wharf and good service. We just ordered sushi here nothing else and it was very normal. Ordered spicy tuna rolls, salmon roe nigiri, salmon rolls and a special roll (don't remember the name but it had beef slices over spicy crap with spicy mayo on top). The special roll was pretty good, although I felt it would've been better if the beef was replaced with a fish. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE salmon roe but for some reason, these was too salty (and I love salt, I would just eat salt for fun if I could) and smelled way too fishy for their own good. I honestly didn't really enjoy them when usually the salmon roes make me very happy. The miso soup was pretty good but had a weird grainy texture to it so not sure what that is about...I'm not a miso soup expert so I can't really critique that.

Sapporo's is half sushi bar and half teppanyaki...Benihana' brother in law, the service and food is par for the course. We got the steak and shrimp off the grill. Nothing more special than other Japanese grills of the same concept. The one good thing going for them is the great location right next to the Wharf. Other than that, a lack luster experience.

It had been a few years since my boyfriend and I went to Sapporo. Valentine's day rolled around and we decided to splurge on a nice meal to celebrate. Since we were both working on the actual holiday we ended up going on a sunday (which we thought would be a slower time anyway). I'm usually very impressed with the food and service here but it was far less than mediocre this time around. I ordered a strawberry margarita which, although tasty, did not come until I had already finished my soup and salad appetizers. I had planned to order a second drink but never had the opportunity because I never saw a waiter again. I understand that the job of the chef is to entertain guests as he cooks. However, he kept yelling literally at the top of his lungs. At first it was funny but then it became annoying. He also continuously hit on the girl who was at the table without a date. Again, at first funny but she clearly did not like it and was uncomfortable. It got to the point where she just sat there with her head down looking at her food- no longer responding to the chef. The food was beyond sub-par as well. I am used to Sapporo producing food that is tender, flavorful and oh my yum! This was NOT the case. I literally did not see him pick up that fancy salt/pepper shaker once. He dished out 1 shrimp per person for our "appetizer" and my scallops were tough and cold. It was such an overpriced dissapointment. I'm officially a Benihana fan now.

We decided to go here and have a sushi today. I have been here several times and so I got one of the papers to start marking what I want to eat and the waiter walked up and started thumbing through my menu to show me the lunch specials. I said no I am here to eat sushi. The lunch special primarily consists of teriyaki and non-sushi offerings. We hardly got any west Sabe or ginger with our food and I had to walk up to the waiter where he was sitting ask him for more. He never offered us water or checking to see how our food was. So she was extremely expensive, just okay. Service was not very attentive and at times annoying. only redeeming quality is the view.

I would have ranked this place a one star, but the location was pretty sweet with a nice view. Therefore, lucky you. You get two stars. Basically, I think this is a waste of a perfectly good venue. Any other restaurant would be BANKING in such a prime location. I was wondering why there wasn't a line to get in.. and now I know why. The gyoza was the most disgusting I've ever had. Almost like they fried it in the morning, froze it, and then microwaved it before serving. I was afraid to touch the rice, although I think it was okay. The tempura was bland and everything else was pretty bland. Surprisingly the salmon didn't taste THAT bad. I am so glad I didn't order any sushi because I seriously may have gotten sick. If you love Japanese food, you'll have an even greater appreciation for GOOD Japanese food after you leave this place.

Very rarely do I ever like Japanese steakhouses...especially if I suspect it will be like Beni Hana. Well, this place was like Beni Hana...but better. The food was infinitely better as was the service. Our hibachi cook/chef kept us laughing on a Christmas day. Bathrooms are clean, service was good...what more can we ask for? I'd definitely come back.

This review is for Sushi only. Lovely location and views, although I sat at the sushi bar which faced just the fish. Nice place, quite wild sounding back in the grill section. Just Sushi for me, but they brought me free miso and delicious cucumber salad. Bottom line: if in Monterey, go there for amazing sushi. I had two specials: white tuna sashimi (OMG it was wonderful), and I think it was called Salmon Amazing, which it was--salmon, avocado, and imitation crab inside, more salmon outside, a big roll with I think 8 pieces. I then ordered a few pieces of grilled eel sushi, and it was the best I ever had (not greasy, but dry and flaky like grilled tuna, but tasted like eel, just wonderful)

My husband and I went here for a fun dinner experience while spending the weekend in Monterey. We bought a $25 gift certificate through Restaurant.com for only $4, so we figured "what did we have to lose?". Though service was a bit slow to get started once we were seated, everything was great once we got going. We sat on the hibachi side, and thoroughly enjoyed our chef's culinary and entertainment skills. We even saw some neat tricks that we hadn't seen before! Food was yummy, and exactly what you'd expect at a hibachi-style place. You could also order sushi dishes from the sushi side of the restaurant, which allowed you to enjoy the whole restaurant! With our gift certificate, we only ended up paying $30 total for the remainder of our bill, tip and tax. We'd definitely return for the great views of the marina and the enjoyable experience!

DO NOT SIT ON THE SUSHI SIDE!!!!!! Absolutely horrible service. I am pretty sure it was the woman's first time ever serving a table. She was so slow and incompetent. All I wanted a was a normal shrimp tempura roll and she could not for the life of her understand what I was talking about! We also ended up ordering a "special roll" with spicy crab and filet mignon for $15. It was absolutely disgusting, we couldn't even finish it. I would never, ever go back there for sushi, only for for the hibachi side.

Apparently I was a little harsh with my recent review of Sapporo, but I am still going to be honest and give you my opinion based on my experiences with this restaurant. I've tried to give them second, third, and even a fourth chance and every time the experience remains the same. Good views alone don't do it for me and honestly that is all this place has going for it. A little effort goes a long way. I don't expect perfection and I realize everybody has a bad day but it amazes me that the owners would allow the waitstaff to be so rude to the customers. I tried to get a clean fork and the waiter looked at me like I was a bother. Needless to say I won't be coming back.

DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU'RE VEGETARIAN! My BF and I were members of a dinner party at Sapporo, and unfortunately for the BF, he's vegetarian. His expensive: "Vegetarian Dish" was a side portion (equal to everyone else's side portion) of onions, zucchini, and mushroom. What's more, he was served Miso soup that was made with chicken broth (!?! No- it wasn't listed on the menu that way). Needless to say, after a VERY expensive meal that the our party host graciously paid for, he was starving. Luckily, I was able to share some of my meal with him. What they consider a vegetarian meal is simply inexcusable, and it's inexcusable at an exorbitant price. Especially considering that this is California, and that Monterey is amidst a farm belt (it's within proximity of many farms). Considering that this place is just a showy, loud, and poor imitation of Benihana (where I had the pleasure of dining last weekend - and they actually have a COUPLE of GOOD vegetarian options), I'd say to skip this place altogether, drive to the real deal, and have sushi (ELSEWHERE - get fresh sushi at a reasonable price - not at this poor excuse for a japanese steakhouse) to in the meantime. The one nice thing I can say is that (sans noisy, terrible birthday banging/singing) the birthday gift (chopsticks, and a picture) were nice. I'm unsure, however, of how much it cost. Their cooking show mostly consists of loud utensil banging, and shouting. The birthday song is worse. Even those who love birthday attention will cringe at this show. I can't think of any reason to go here. Save your money and appetite for someplace worthy.

Sapporo was wonderful! There was 4 of us celebrating a belated birthday this passed Saturday evening. We ordered one of the boats of sushi I think it was boat B. Not sure. The Sushi was super fresh and mighty tasty. Service was great and the view of the harbor was breathtaking. Favorite part of it all was the best birthday song I have ever heard in a restaurant. I would highly recommend celebrating a B-Day here! Go Sapporo!! You rocked my world!

The only thing I can say that's good about this place is that they cook right in front of you, if you get the non sushi. But other than that most of there stuff is too commercial. Not really authentic. But what else I can say about this place, if you want some good sushi without the flash then go to some hole in the wall, there are some in Monterey.

Wow this place is amazing. Stopped by after a friend told me I had to try it out. My wife and I sat on the tepanyakee side and had a great time and the food was amazing. I had shrimp and fillet my wife had hibachi chicken both were great. Highly recommend if your at the warf walk down to warf 2 and treat yourself to a great dinner and show. P.s. several tables were having birthdays here and it looked like a great time.

Customer service reeks. The waiter was short with us, and got my order wrong. Which is normally no big deal, mistakes happen, but when I asked for what I had actually ordered he told me that I had pointed at something different on the menu....but I never opened the menu when ordering! So apparently it's okay to lie to my face and try to blame me? Nope. I was hoping the food would make up for it, also a nope. I am local, and love sushi. I won't be coming back.

THEY HAVE FIRE !!! ... I took my girl and the kids to Sapporo for a bday dinner... we had such a great time.. we have been disappointed at Benihana because the cooking demonstration was a bit lack luster since they stopped flaming anything table side... not here.. show added a must needed excitement and fun to our group... good portion sizes and full bar options... lots of bdays going on that night as well so obviously a popular spot for such an event... will be back many times

LOVED THIS PLACE!!!!!! Food was great and if you get a cooking table you are in for a show!!! The chefs are very energetic and talented and most of them have a great sense of humor. I had the salmon and it was divine. Cooked just how I liked it. It can be a bit loud so be prepared for a few birthday songs including drums!! My fiancé and I enjoyed every minute of this experience and highly recommend everyone locally or just visiting the area give it a try, you wont regret it!! The bathroom needed a little tlc but it wasn't very bad i.e paper towels on the ground and one stall had no seat covers and that was it but compared to the bathroom horrors I've experienced it didn't deter me, and I'm a bathroom freak its the first thing I check upon entering an establishment. Always keep in mind if the bathroom is not well taken care if says a lot about the place itself lol. Other than that head on in for the food and entertainment and enjoy!!!

Went in after the visiting the aquarium. My husband doesn't get treated to nice seafood very often so I guess we were a little disappointed when this wasn't amazing. Sorry for having high expectations! It was our first time in Monterey Bay, and I wish we had picked somewhere else I guess. He had the "best of the best" roll. We also had agedashi tofu, edamame, tempura udon, and gyoza. I did enjoy the view of the bay that the restaurant offers. Great looking out into the ocean. We even saw a harbor seal staring at some people in a boat.

Sapporo's is really the premier Japanese restaurant on the Peninsula because it not only serves up some delicious fare but really encapsulates the Monterey Bay essense with it's waterfront location on the Fisherman's Wharf. No Japanese restaurant in the greater Monterey area lays claim to this coveted beachfront access, just steps from Monterey State Beach. Sapporo's offers teppanyaki-style cuisine, where chefs display their iron-cooktop prowess along with a little nightly cooking entertainment . You might watch a fire-shooting onion volcano stack or a utensil juggling performance or catch a spatula-flung shrimp. They also have a full-bar, serving a wide variety of drinks. We started off with a couple orders of the sweet and tangy seaweed salad (Goma Wakame, $5.50). This low-calorie, nutrient-dense salad comprised of seaweed, sugar, rice vinegar, red pepper flakes and sesame seeds, really complements sushi like a fine wine. It's simple but delivers a lot intense flavors. The Hot Night (spicy tuna topped with spicy crab and avocado) delivered a nice punch of heat along with flurry of well-balancing flavors. The Buffalo (California roll with baked salmon, shrimp and crab) was an excellent partner to the Hot Night. Ten decent-sized California rolls topped with generous mounds of baked salmon. The Philadelphia Roll, an ever-present sushi selection for me, added that nice creamy texture that I always desire. I've always enjoyed coming into Sapporo's - tasty sushi and dishes, friendly service, fun entertainment and beautiful vistas. Excellent choice for any type of gathering (business, dates and family gatherings).

The view was great, as it overlooked the ocean and marina, but the sushi was just mediocre. My husband and I both got sushi, which tasted like it had been sitting around for awhile. With that said, we wouldn't go back.

We have been here plenty of time and never had a bad experience. Didn't give it five stars because so times it's very noisy especially on weekend nights. Don't mind thou I'm use to it. Must try best of the best for sushi my favorite

When we walked in I wondered if it was the back entrance... no hostess, no real indicators of seat yourself or wait to be. Stood awkwardly for about five minutes before being asked if we had been helped, "no" "ok"... and wait five more minutes. Have you been helped? "no" "oh. want to sit at the bar?" The bar consists of three chairs and 'on tap' sake. Eventually, we just grab chairs by the Chef station. I guess reservations are a good idea. Noted. That's where the bad ends and the delicious sushi begins. I don't remember what I ordered, but do remember it was all tasty. Everything was from the specialty roll menu. I don't really know my way around the sushi, so I just start at the top and get 4 rolls. They were all great. The birthday song that is done is creative. Drums, tambourines, dancing/participation encouraged, etc... the first time. After the 5th, well... maybe I'm old :) I will definitely be going back as it was delicious. Next time, reservations.

My wife and I had a nice hibachi dinner here. While it's not necessarily anything new (if you're familiar with hibachi grills) it was still excellent. Our only gripe was the amount of waitstaff available. We went on a Saturday night, usually busy, but it took a very long time to track someone down to bring us new drinks.

We had a party of 12 and ordered almost everything on the menu. The food came in good time and I only heard good things. However the food is a little bit pricey. The service was awful, it was as if the customers were a nuisance to the waiters. That said, I was disappointed because when we left the restaurant the waiter didn't say goodbye or anything which I found quite rude.

I've been to many teppenyaki restaurants and this was one of the best! The staff was very friendly and fun! There were about 4 birthdays while we there and the staff made sure to sing happy birthday the right way with tambourines and a taiko drum! They had the whole restaurant singing and dancing! The food selection was great and the food was really good. The prices were average compared to Benihana. My husband and I ordered the Samurai which included fried rice, grilled veggies, steak, jumbo shrimp and sea scallops. We were excited because it's hard to find fresh and delicious sea scallops from our part of the Bay Area for a good price so we took advantage of being in Monterey and ordered any scallop entree we found! The food was cooked to perfection. You didn't really need to use any of the sauces because the food was full of flavor already. The sauces did add a little kick to it which was really good. If you're not into the teppenyaki tables, they do have regular tables and a sushi bar on the other side of the restaurant.

I had placed a to-go order here just recently, and I'm pretty surprised on how expensive it is to just order sushi and fried rice. I ordered two spider rolls, one California roll and one dragon roll. I also ordered three side orders of fried rice for my family and I. The total bill came out to $46.00!! That's pretty expensive if you ask me. And the sushi rolls were mediocre. A little on the small side than what I'm used to...just seemed like I was jipped on my food for the amount I had to pay. The fried rice was awesome though. I think they have they best fried rice in any Japanese restaurant so far.

Been here once and I loved how tentative they where how ever I went with my coworker who seemed to have complained about everything possible and the staff must of hate her for it. However they stayed nice and up to date with the entire party. I sure will be back with family and enjoy my dinner fully next time

Nope don't go here. TRUST ME THEIR FOOD SUCKS. So we were seated by the window, that was pleasant, but the flies in the restaurant and around the food and sushi bar, not so pleasant! Anyway, let's get to the point shall we? I ordered sushi. I swear it was a few days old, I'm surprised I didn't get sick. Our waiter, the brilliant guy, who messed up our order was not very happy to have his job. I couldn't figure out what it was about him, but he brought us the wrong order and didn't even care. WHAT? Yeah skip this join, trust me, they do not know food or service here.

Really friendly service here, clean & with a lovely view of the sailboats in the harbor. I loved the assorted pickle bowl & their sushi rolls are almost too beautiful to eat. Delicious, inventive & well prepared. The miso soup was served nice & hot with just the right amount of seaweed. I'll be back for more.

Great service for our large group of 13 people. We took my mom here for her birthday and the cook was very entertaining. Food seemed pretty good but can't really compare since we have only been here a few times. They were pretty quick and seemed to push us along to clear out the table but since our chef was very entertaining it made it a memorable night.

The best sushi in town. And for birthdays or other fun celebrations, the hibachi grill is great food and the chef will put on a good show.

We went here last night for dinner in the cooking table area and experienced the WORST service ever! I was not offered a kids menu and it was obvious my daughter, 8 year old doesn't eat adult portions. The guest sitting at the same table also had a young girl and we both had to ask for kids menus. So, when we asked for one... the guys rude response was, "you have to be 10 years or younger.". We were like "OK... can we have two". I was thinking to myself... is this how you treat your customers? The menu situation should have been established already by the hostess BEFORE we were seated. I was already getting bad vibes off this place. We normally go to Benihana but I wanted to see what we were missing out on over here. Let me tell you... We waited about 10-15 minutes just to get someone to take our drink order, the chicken teriyaki was BLAH, no taste at all and there wasn't any Teriyaki sauce on it....They make you use that ginger sauce they offer in little dishes, the shrimp was whatever...the guy who prepared our food was not personable/fun/exciting like the other cooks. I guess I was thinking he would fascinate us with his fancy knife/table cooking tricks- NOT! Then to top it off when the check arrived, the lady gave me the check and was literally WAITING for it back. She just stood in front of me waiting. I needed to determine how much tip I was going to leave cause I wanted to make sure I left no more than I needed to. I just thought the ENTIRE experience was awful! We live in the Monterey area and there are plenty of nice restaurants we can go to that has better food and service. I would NOT recommend coming here. Don't waste your money! I would go to Benihana instead of this place... No doubt in my mind! I give this review 1 stars ONLY because the view was amazing.

This is my second time here and I have to say, I'm very disappointed in the food. I remembered it being satisfying during my first visit, but this time I felt the price was not worth the quality or amount of food. I received a very small portion of lettuce, which was doused with a heavy dressing. It was almost like a viscous soup with green accents. The rice didn't end up being delicious as I remembered, and the vegetable portion was smaller than half a cup and with a limited variety of greens. Our cook wasn't talkative and did little to nothing to entertain us outside his spinning egg trick and expected yet iconic onion volcano display. I remained staring at my phone screen due to lack of interest. Normally I am piling leftovers in a take-out box for a second meal, always using this justification to pay the high price of Japanese dining, yet I nearly finished my entire plate. ...Not the typical amount I would expect in my experience of this type of dining. They did give me an extra cup of steamed rice as a mistake from giving me fried as well as my separately-ordered plain rice. Not so much a win. I watch my carb intake. But a nice gesture on their side of error. If you're a tourist, it's nice to visit because it's over the pier and has a very welcoming appeal. As a resident, it's only "okay" on occasion.

Food was ok, charged too much for what you get. Service was slow and spotty. Paying for parking is an issue. It is in a private parking lot not the metered street. Went here a few times, was ok not great.

Rice was somehow hard. Other than that food was decent and the place was clean. Would have gave 3 stars but I was overcharged $7.00 on a $20.00 takeout meal and when brought it up they said the prices changed. So the prices changed from the time I ordered online until the time I arrived at the restaurant? Its sad because I really want Japanese tonight its just not worth being overcharged 35%.

We went here for my husband's birthday and I am glad we did! Food is amazing, we got the lobster and fried california roll and the sauce comes with it is very good. Service was great! They gave us a window seat which is very nice view specially in the evening =) Highly recommend this place to everyone. The only thing is that the crowd is loud.

This place was amazing! The staff was so friendly. The chefs were really fun. The place is super clean. Food was good. View is amazing. We took our daughter here for my birthday. They were all so nice and friendly to all of us. They interacted with her the whole meal and made her night. The cook put on quite a theatrical show. No complaints. Their birthday song is quite a sight to see. Drumming and tambourines and singing. You owe it to yourself to try this place. Definitely a welcome change from all the touristy mediocre restaurants around the bay. They even took a family photo with their SLR camera and printed it out and gave it to is with our bill.

Very serviceable sushi. Waitstaff could use some training (a sake list is preferable to making me get up and look at the bottles in the front) and I've NEVER been told to hand my order list to the chef. Otherwise, very fresh, small rice, good quality for price.

Sapporo Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi was pretty good. We went there for a very late lunch (around 4 PM). I really liked the atmosphere in this restaurant - What a wonderful view of Fisherman's Wharf and the harbor area in Monterey, CA! We stumbled upon this place pretty much on accident, and then I realized that my friend had told me about this restaurant previously. The restaurant is located in a lighthouse-looking building and has large windows overlooking the Monterey harbor. Wow, dazzling view. The food was also pretty good. We ordered the chicken udon and also the beef yaki soba. Wow! That beef yaki soba came in quite a large portion and was really delicious. The udon was good too, and was big enough to be shared by two people. I didn't try and sushi here, but I would be curious to try it next time I visit. The only reason I'm giving this restaurant 4 instead of 5 stars was the service. When we first got to the restaurant, none of the servers really acknowledged us for quite a while. It wasn't even that crowded, as it was 4 PM, which is not quite lunch and not quite yet dinner. Still, the waiters didn't acknowledge us until 15 minutes later. When the waiter took our order, his phone rang and he answered in the middle of taking our order! Um, don't they have staff in the back who can answer phones? Do they need to be answering the phone during their customers' order? I thought that was pretty rude... still, the food came out quickly and we were pretty happy. I would recommend this place and visit again.

This place was great!! The food was cooked perfect and the waiter was super funny and nice! The only thing that we didn't like was that we sat at the grill and we had to sit with a different family= -1 star. But besides that, everything was perfect

  • Mymy N.

This hibachi style restaurant is one of the best ones I've been to, with an awesome view to boot! The chef's tricks are pretty standard with other hibachi restaurants but what's notable about this spot is the amount of food you get with your order. Everyone gets a mushroom soup and a salad as well as 4 pieces of shrimp for the appetizer. Then the chef cooked up some fried rice, with a large amount of butter, and filled our whole plates up with it. I ordered the hibachi steak and scallops option and the scallops were ginormous and the steak was plentiful. I wish they would add ice cream or mochi to end the meal on a sweet note, but aside from that, everything was excellent! We even got a group picture to put on the wall. Very fun and a definite must-try. PS: It's on the 2nd pier, not in the main Fishermans Wharf area. Damn you Siri for getting me lost!

We live here in Monterey and this is our family's favorite place to eat to celebrate a big occasion. We always have the hibachi. Yes, the price isn't cheap, but c'mon, you're in Monterey overlooking Fisherman's Wharf. $16 is well worth a 3 course meal. It is actually cheaper than several of the restaurants on the Wharf. Yes, you have to pay for parking but if you go to the coast you have to pay for parking everywhere, even when we go to the gym! They are INCREDIBLY family friendly. The staff goes out of their way to help you with little ones, from kid-friendly chopsticks to coloring pages. Plus, their birthday song for customers celebrating a birthday is my favorite I have ever heard at a restaurant.

A friend took me out for lunch and we came on a beautiful day the view is awesome in the restaurant. Our cook was entertaining but the food was spectacular. I ordered the combo of chicken and shrimp, it came with fried rice and vegetables, we also had edamame and calamari along with some cocktails, one word DELICIOUS!

The view from this place was phenomenal. The food was pretty good too and the entertainment is great. However, the service was a little off. We had reservations and we had arrived all together. I was disappointed that our orders were not taking together since we were all in one group. I had also asked to see a sushi menu and I was just given a list instead of a menu that goes into detail of what the sushi rolls contain and our server was too busy to take the time to explain to me what that contained. We ordered the main dinner plates which came with an appetizer, entre and other side dishes. I was a little confused with the appetizer portion of it because it said fresh shrimp which turned out to be just two little shrimps that are split with your group. Or that you have to try to catch with your mouth. I even asked where is the appetizer because I was going to order a real appetizer but then again our server did not have time to stop and explain details since we were new to this experience. What I did like is that you can actually order one combo and share with two of you and maybe a child.

First time we came here we sat at the sushi side of the restaurant and the service wasn't the best so we give it a second chance and we sat to were they cook in front of you, because the have the restaurant split 2 ways and if you go sit to were the cook in front of you can still get sushi. The cooks are friendly and funny , they make you're dinner so enjoyable. the sushi that I like the most is cal "The Best Of The Best" yummy is so good!!! Also if you plan on celebrating you're birth day this is one of the best restaurant to go cause they have this guys playing music and singing to you. You guys keep it up!!!

Very entertaining steakhouse with good show from waiters/food preparers. Steak very good, accompanying food good also. Tables hold perhaps 10 people as you sit around and they prepare food. Not much sushi to be found, upstairs about 200 yards from the wharf. Runs about $40/person with drinks.

The place can use some redecorating and some new paint inside but the food is good. Had not been here in a long time (only because my husband used to be very picky but thank goodness he's open to trying his new restaurants now). It can be a bit pricey but you get good, big sushi rolls and huge dinner portions.

So disappointed after going there last night. I had their hibachi scallops, inari, and a Samurai Jack. The inari had hardly any rice in it and the tofu skin was incredibly dry. The scallops were pretty good but nothing special. The Samurai Jack was the best part. It had a generous serving of whiskey but I couldn't taste any of the other mixings. The reason this place gets one star is because of our service. Our waiter was very short when it came to serving us and had a "Whadaya want?" attitude. The chef had zero sense of showmanship/personality and it was terribly awkward to watch him. By far the most mediocre steakhouse I have ever been to and with this place you really pay for the view.

We took my son tonight for his 15th birthday. It was a great experience. We were seated right away. My grandson was with us and he is three. The guy at the grill talked to him in order to get his attention. He let my grandson know he was going to start a fire. The cook was focussed on my grandson. The cook started the grill fire and Noah didn't like it at all. The cook did an incredible job of letting Noah know he wouldn't do that again and he won Noah over after that by his incredible cooking show. We all look forward to return for another great dinner.

Probably the best service I've ever experienced at a restaurant. We are regulars because we live close by so we frequent Sapporo's often. We love this place because it offers a variety of dishes - a seafood salad that is delicious every time. Sushi that delights, and when we are in the mood for steak - their steak and lobster dinner is to die for. The service is amazing and we always get more than we pay for...love this place. They care about their customers and they strive for quality!

At least 1 1/2 stars are for the great view of the marina and wharf. I have been here a few times since I moved into this area some years ago, and the food have definitely gone downhill for the past 2 years. Just popped in today into the sushi side of this over-large dual-side restaurant for lunch. The place is looking more and more worn out. Even the menus are encased in flaking plastic. The offered items seemed to much less than what I remember from previous visits. The hot sake was lukewarm. The (gratis) miso soup was watered down. The nigiri sushi was prob. the worse I have had for a while. The rice was hard and lumpy. The fish were all old. (I understand most fish arrived frozen, but this batch obviously spent much time in the fridge after thawing.) The flying-fish roe was gritty and metallic, not moist and sweet like they were supposed to be. My guess is that their lunch-time sushi are just left-overs from the previous day, recovered from the fridge. People next table over asked for tea, and was told there was only iced tea. WTF? No hot tea in a Japanese restaurant?

Sapporo is one of my favorite restaurants in Monterey. The food (Japanese), location, view, service, and atmosphere are all amazing. I have been here for countless birthday dinners, sushi and sake nights, or just for a quick lunch. The food is SOOOOO bomb. The sushi is SUPER fresh and tastes like heaven. There is seating in the front part of the restaurant if customers are interested in just having sushi or a quick lunch/dinner. Seating in the back part of the restaurant is for the ultimate Sapporo dining experience. Order a tasty Sapporo beer, or a shot of sake, some starter sushi, and enjoy your dinner being crafted on a huge grill in the middle of your table. The chefs are always a hoot, and the last time i went our chef flicked little pieces of shrimp into each one of our mouths. All their dinner plates are amazing, I recommend getting the fried rice it is super yummy. And you if you have extra $$$ to spend definitely try the lobster. My favorite is the teriyaki chicken and shrimp combo dinner. Big, glass windows line the outside of the restaurant, so anywhere you sit gives you an amazing harbor view, especially during sunset. Also if it is your birthday, enjoy a birthday song filled with drums, and blow out your candle attached to a pineapple fruit boat!

Had dinner our 1st night in Monterey. Ate in the sushi side. The very friendly waiter recommended a sushi roll called Best of Best. He didn't tell us what it was at first. To our surprise he brought something wrapped in foil on a Flaming plate. We had to wait for the flame to end and he opened it. Basically it's a tempura roll but the fire gave it a different taste. It was an enjoyable evening.

I love this place. Tonight I ate there very early and still managed to join another, very engaging family. Our chef said he was new and had recently moved to the area, but he was a pro cooking. He did all of the tricks and kept up conversation with us. The miso is clear, which is my favorite. I love their salad dressing. The steak was cooked perfectly. The view can't be missed! I eat here again and again.

If the ambiance were a little better tuned-up, i'd give it 4 stars. Didn't get the full knife-flying, flame rising, party experience. That was by choice because we ate at the sushi bar. The chef was subtle, informative, and very talented. He suggested i try the unique "Best of Best" roll. I did. Despite not being very traditional, i LOVED it. It was basically a tempura fish in the middle of rice, and typical other roll stuff. then cooked in a unique flaming foil style. Realllllly good stuff. My dad had sushimi and it was a huge plate of a variety of fish, very fresh, very tasty. Only complaint is the ambiance. There are "white boards" listing stuff, which kind of felt like a bad back-room or something. Neat marina local. but just not quite hitting the ambiance note.

Is it Teppanyaki or Hibachi? - a quick read on the difference between the two indicates this place is Teppanyaki, but their menu calls things Hibachi - regardless, once I knew I was coming here for dinner, I was hoping for a volcano! There were three of us, and we were seated at our own table/hot plate combo. When I've been in these sorts of places before now and only three seats were filled, you'd be waiting and hoping for others to arrive quickly so that you could get on and eat. Here I was happy to see that after a very short wait, we were off and ordering. Our chef arrived and cooked our stuff in front of us as they do in these sort of places. He didn't get to do any egg tricks as we all wanted steamed rice, and his routine seemed a little forced and going through the motions like, but given that his audience was three tired adults, the "energy in the room" wasn't that great either! And we did get a volcano (and I did cheer that fact!). Food tasted good too, though the chef didn't give us our sauces until right at the end, so munching and watching the rest of it being cooked was a little limited. Final word on the chef is that he was pretty accurate with the shrimp pieces being flipped into our mouths - he was three for four - and all three of us firmly placed our ability to get a shrimp piece in our mouths entirely in his accuracy at flinging said shrimp pieces. This would have gotten a four star review apart from an inordinate amount of difficulty in getting the check - up until that stage the service had been great, but the multiple waving folks down events that occurred at the end of the evening cost them a star.

Only thing that stopped it from a 1-star review was the view. Our appetizers were not even hot and we found a hair in one of our gyoza. Staff didn't even say sorry and took the plate away. Very dissatisfied with this restaurant and will never come back.

Great ambiance. This place is right on the water with a view of Monterey and the harbor. WAYYYYYY better than Benihana down the street. Don't go there. Go to Sapporo. Great for families. Decent prices. Food was good. Similar to any other hibachi restaurant. Staff is super friendly. We all had a great time and plan to go back!

I had never been to this place before and heard they cooked the food right in front of you. We went on a double date with some friends for my birthday and had an amazing time! The food tasted great and the cook was very entertaining, he even cooked the shrimp last since my husband is allergic. They played some drums and brought out a fruit platter for my birthday and it was fun. They also took our picture as a keepsake for the night! Overall, the food was great, fun atmosphere, and incredible service. Need to go back soon!

We were planning on having dinner at Old Fisherman's Grotto but my sudden crave for steak and my bf's love for sushi lead us to Sapporo. (That and the fact that we got lazy...) After looking through the menu and realizing there were only 2 kinds of steak, I was seriously considering leaving. Come on, if the name of the restaurant says "steakhouse," it should have more steak options, no? TO OUR SURPRISE, the mushroom oyster steak was the best part of the entire meal. Medium rare, juicy, flavorful, TENDER, and hit the spot. The side of veggies were nicely seasoned but a little dry.. but the steak was really derish and made up for it. The rolls were alright; some were a little dry (CA hand rolls) and a little boring (the spicy tuna was spicy...but a weird consistency and flavor... spider roll was good, though) Service was great. Price was decent for steak and sushi... but still think they should expand on their steak options.. or just turn the whole place into a steakhouse cause the sushi didn't quite cut it for me. The steak alone was four stars but overall, this place is 3-star worthy.

I'm not one to relish the concept of writing a bad review, and I usually give a place the benefit of the doubt. But this was perhaps the WORST sushi I've EVER HAD! We ordered miso soup and a salad to start, spicy tuna roll, and the Nigiri and Sashimi assorted deluxe plate. The miso soup was good, but the salad dressing tasted pretty much like watered down thousand island. Very lame. When our rolls and the nigiri and sashimi came, I was sorely disappointed. ALL of the fish in everything tasted like it was a week old and had been sitting out for a couple days. I wouldn't say FISHY, but just NOT FRESH AT ALL! Just blah. Soggy, no flavor, terrible texture. As any sushi fan would tell you, the freshness of the fish is priority #1 for any sushi restaurant. This fish was just not good at all. Also, it's not a good sign when you walk into a sushi place and can tell right off the bat that nobody working there is Japanese. I'm not sure where they're from, but it ain't Japan. Maybe Phillipines? Not to be racist, but I think Japanese should be serving sushi. Next time I'll talk to the locals to get the lowdown on where the good sushi places might be. I'm never going here again!

This is the worst sushi restaurant I have gone with! First of all we got moved 4 times and when we finally got service the fish was not fresh and the service sucked! Very unfriendly people besides one nice sushi chef that helped us and that was hard to get his attention. They need nice people, very touristy, and need more smiling people and more help!! the best sushi is MOTO SUSHI downtown!!!!! Now your talking

I have been to several Japanese steakhouses before and there really isn't that much difference between any of them, nothing really stands out. Sapporo though, does stand out. It has an impeccable view of the wharf, the food is excellent, and the service is second to none. I would definitely go here again.

Considering how much fresh seafood there is in this area, I expected all sushi restaurants here to not just good, but phenomenal. And Sapporo did not deliver. We ordered the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) appetizer, a spicy tuna roll, and both got the chirashi (assorted fish over rice). The entree sizes here are TINY--definitely smaller than what I am used to from other Japanese restaurants. Sure, they were just enough to fill us for us to be OK, but I didn't leave feeling satisfied. Water tasted like crap too btw, so you're probably better off ordering soda...View was awesome, service was OK -- would I come back? Nah.

Service was kind of slow and inattentive for a late (2pm) weekend lunch. Ordered the spicy BBQ calamari for an appetizer - it was very good! For lunch entree it was more of a mixed bag - my beef Yaki soya was OK - nothing special but decent. Wife's chicken teriyaki was not to her liking - she thought the use of only breast meat rather than thigh meat was not the best choice and the teriyaki sauce itself was watered down and "cheap" tasting. I am not into chicken teriyaki myself so I didn't really care but passing that along in case someone reading this is.

This place was not the best I've ever been to, and not the worst either... (although it came in second to worst). First of all, I just have to get this off my chest. Tempura shrimp, Tempura flakes, they are suppose to be light and CRISPY. The tempura i had on my sushi, and my tempura shrimp in my sushi, were SO soggy and stale, that it was HORRIBLE. The flavors were there for your specialty roles, your execution was horrendous. At the end of my service, I still managed to tip you, because your waiters were constantly checking up on us... (the food did not deserve a real tip). Aside from that, the presentation of the Best of Best was pretty cool. Thats it. Bleh - not coming here again if im in the area.

View of the water & boats was spectacular. Service was "meh-I've experienced better." Hibachi lunch specials were very affordable (bulgogi & hibachi scallops - both under $10). Both served with soup & had a side of vegetables & rice. Bulgogi was a bit tough to chew & scallops should have been on the grill just a bit longer...

Very pleasantly surprised. I consider myself a FORMER Wharf snob. I am now reformed and am happy to live and eat under the bridge. Girlfriend ordered the chicken teriyaki - for $8.00 she received: nicely fileted pieces of WHITE meat, teriyaki on the side so that she could decide how much she wanted, beautifully steamed and seasoned veggies. For $13.00 I received the "Best of Monterey" roll: served on a hot plate (flames!), when it was unwrapped there was tempura shrimp, crab albeit fake crab but still, and it was tasty. Nice service. We got our food in literally five minutes. It is a shame that they don't give this place a makeover - but all in all, I would go back.

I enjoy looking over the water as I have a good meal with a loved one. Food was decent, but service could have been a little more attentive so we were not waiting and wondering where our check is. Had to go up to front to get check and pay. It was not even busy, but I will go back.

If you are looking for some good fresh Sushi this is a great choice. Over in he Old Wharf it overlooks the marina and has some great sunset views. Back to the Sushi. Did I mention FRESH? It was! Maybe it was my lucky day here but damn good Sushi! They have a sushi bar and teppen tables.

Great views, good food, entertaining cooking shows. They do shuttle you in here because they are trying to get people in and out, but you can stay as long after the show/dinner as you like. We definitely prefer Sapporo over Benihana, you get your money's worth here in terms of quality/quantity of food and service.

The view was cool haha. I ordered a chicken bento box. - Nothing spectacular about it. Calimari - Finished it all. Sashimi mix - fresh Service - we were one of three parties there. Not lightning quick at all.

Came with friends and expected much more. Most of us ordered the bento box but couldn't finish it, I think for food portion it was great, but food taste was just okay as everything felt like it was all deep fried. First time we all had gyoza deep fried (it should just be pan fried) and the tempura dip had green onions in it which added a different kind of weird flavor than the normal sweet flavor. Also, California rolls are normally finely minced so it taste better, but the imitation crab was a whole chunk so it didn't add much flavor. We also ordered a couple of rolls which was not bad, I'll stick to the sushi rolls if I ever decide to stop here again, it was kinda expensive for food too.

In celebration of my brother's graduation, my family and I headed to Sapporo JS&S, and it was one of the most entertaining meals I ever had! ( I had heard of teppanyaki, but not had the opportunity to experience that style of cuisine.) The chef was so funny and engaging, and in between egg tricks and creating a volcano with onions, he cracked jokes and made it an occasion to remember! It was so entertaining that even now, nearly a month after the event, I have trouble remembering what I ate, but it was shrimp, chicken, fried rice, and delicious. From what I also recall the sushi dish my sister and I shared beforehand was tasty too with a kick! :) In addition to the "show" and dinner, the view of the water from the wharf was simply beautiful!

Very average food coupled with a world class view. This is out on Fisherman's Wharf so it gets a lot of tourist trade. We don't know many locals that would seek it out however. We went because we are looking for great sushi, but while the service was fine, the sushi was very mediocre. Our tuna sushi seemed just a little old. We also had a sea urchin sushi that was tasty. On the other hand the salad dressing was glopped all over the salad to such an extent that the salad was barely visible. That's really a lot of dressing. Service is fine but it can't make up for the mediocre food.

Views are great should be 4 stars however I didn't go to eat the view. Service was just OK, waiter wasn't friendly and didn't understand or really care to answer our questions about the menu. Sushi was alright but nothing I would come back for. Just an OK experience.

This place was absolutely AMAZING! I would love to eat here all the time! There are two parts to this restaurant, a sit-down table sushi part, and a teppanyaki part. When I went there with my family, we decided to try out the teppanyaki, and I am soo glad we did! I had ordered the steak, which turned out very tender and delicious. Combined with the vegetables and shrimp that came with it....it....was.....heaven! But I don't love this place just for the food; our teppanyaki chef was incredible. There were so many tricks he performed that mesmerized me. He threw shrimp into my brothers mouth not once, but three times. (He caught it twice) Making the "egg-roll" and the "butter-fly", this guy had me cracking up! So to sum it up, this place is officially one of my favorites now!

Flaming hot. An-all-in-one package of entertainment and food. Our chef made silly food jokes from Chicken Run to flaming onion volcanoes, but it was fun to watch him cook our meals in front of us. And the food was pretty yummy, particularly the salmon, steak, and fried rice. I'm told it's a much less spendy (and more fun version of Benihana.) It's great for big groups (we had 16 people-so 2 tables and 2; chefs) and has gracious views of the Monterey Bay and beyond. It's also nice to take a stroll along their Fisherman's Wharf post meal (where we saw rogue sea lions and other sea life). Warning: It gets a bit hot and noisy inside-with initial big flames and lively chefs, but it's worth a visit. Oops. Should have posted this before...wish we could reorganize our reviews.

Views are great, food is one of the absolute best of japanese restaurants (and i have been to japan), service is great, prices are reasonable, environment very romantic and pleasant. Couldnt have asked for more... 5 stars.

I had such a strange almost horrific incident that I cannot share and feel as though I should speak or write to the manager... no the owner... before posting my experience. Will keep you posted. One star because I have no choice and the food wasn't nearly as bad as the customer service. Epic views and they have so much potential in this unique location... too bad the service was circus-like.

I've only been here for the sushi. The rolls are decently sized (roughly 8 pieces) and the fish is very fresh. There's adequate seating, and the view of the bay simply can't be beat. Beware if you get any sort of spicy rolls however - for some reason they put chunks of peppers in the mix. It tastes OK, but adds a weird texture. The staff is always very courteous, and the wait time for your food is always very short. The complimentary Miso soup and cucumber salads are always nice and refreshing.

Food: Decent. For being right next to the water, the sushi isn't that amazing. The special rolls were pretty good, so check the whiteboard by the Sushi Chef. Prices: A little high, but obviously the location is the reason for that. You can't find a better view, so it's worth it. Service: A little meh. Our waiter seemed not to have any motivation to do a really good job. When he realized we were going to order A LOT, he seemed to do a little better. Cleanliness: Okay. I HATE carpet in restaurants and this one is fully carpeted. Our table was a little sticky.

Really not what I was expecting - we walked right in at 7:30 on a Friday night and found ample seating at the Sushi bar. Half the restaurant was sushi and half was Japanese Steakhouse. We went here specifically for sushi so I can't tell you how the Steakahouse portion was. When asking the chef about what fish was fresh and if there were was any special fish on the menu today, I was told that all of the fish was previously frozen except for the Sea Bass, Tuna and Halibut. Additionally they were out of Uni (Sea Urchin), which I love. We did have the Halibut sashimi (smaller pieces) and a few creative rolls but nothing that blew our minds. I don't mind spending $100 for a good sushi dinner for 2 but I really wasn't satisfied with the quality and selection for the money I spent. I probably could have received better quality sushi / sashimi if I went to a Whole Foods or high end market. We will not go here the next time we travel to Monterey.

Another Korean-owned Japanese-style restaurant. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but makes for some, hmm, interesting choices for decor, menu, and the like. The dead giveaway that Koreans run this place is the presence of bulgogi (Korean marinated beef) on the menu. There are other, more subtle cues that point towards non-Japanese ownership. For instance, they use Japanese teapots as soy sauce containers. The name of the place is Sapporo, yet the symbol they use is a pagoda; Sapporo is not known for its pagodas (I'm not sure there even are any pagodas in Sapporo). The names of the Japanese dishes on the menu are written in an odd way, and the list of Japanese phrases on the back is not only written bizarrely, but has significant mistakes. But this isn't supposed to be about that. Let's talk food and service. I enjoyed the food. The Japanese person I was with said that certain dishes had authentic Japanese seasoning. For instance, the mussels with cod roe sauce used Japanese mayonnaise (not a traditional dish, but very tasty nonetheless). On the other hand, the "yakisoba" had unconventional ingredients, like bell peppers, black pepper, and cilantro, and was not seasoned with Japanese "sauce" (the brown goo they splort onto tonkatsu, yakisoba, and okonomiyaki). Even so, it was tasty, if not authentic. The tempura was good, if not great; at least they don't use panko like Oh Sushi does. The marinated octopus salad was nice, but needed more rice wine vinegar (but the octopus was soft and nice). I tried the quail egg shooter: two quail egg yolks in a martini glass, along with some sake, soy sauce, and teeny roe (I suspect flying fish eggs, but am not sure). If you like raw quail egg yolk, you'll like this; if not, not. I liked it. The service? Fine. The waiter who served us was OK, if not excellent (but you're not paying "excellent service" prices here, so that's fine--no complaints). All the wait staff on duty when we went were Asian, except one swarthy guy of undetermined ethnicity. However, only the sushi chefs appeared to be Japanese, and I'm not certain about that. But does that matter? Sure, Asian waitrons look more "authentic" in an Asian restaurant, but if they aren't actually Japanese, then I don't think it matters where they're from (though it would be nice if Americans, rather than the foreign-born, were employed during this awful recession. I have nothing against foreigners per se, but do we really need to import a million of them a year when millions upon millions of native-born Americans are chronically out of work?). Ennyhoo, I can see coming back here, but I can also see relying on our old standbys, like Sakura, Ichiriki, and Ocean Sushi. P.S.: The views are nice, too.

we love coming here. if you go to the section with the food cooking at the table itself, you are in for a treat for the whole family. we have three kids under four and they love it too. it's like dinner and a show combined. and if you have a birthday in the group tell them and they do an extra show just for that.

whenever my parents treats us to dinner we go to sapporo but we always sit on the hibachi side. i took my bf to sapporo for sushi when he came to monterey to visit me. the sushi was really fresh and yummy, i actually think it's the best i've had in the area. lovely view, we were seated next to the windows and could see the boats and the wharf. our server was really nice and it wasn't too busy so we got our food fairly quickly.

Lavish Lunch Bento Box! We adore lunch specials and were delighted by our experience. Top notch views of the harbor, bay and wharf for starters. Since we enjoyed lunch on a Tuesday; service was professional, friendly and efficient. Good miso soup and tea began our adventure. The $12.95 Bento Box lunch special was delicious, a real "WOW" meal. See photos for full effect. Of course, we had to take half home for dinner...pacing is important at our age. =D A very cool place overall. We will be back!

We have been going to Sapporo's for years and have always thought they were good but pricey - I have a bad habit of never checking the bill. Today I felt the bill was too high and realized they already added the 18% gratuity. It dawned on me, every time I go they've done this, it's why I seem to pay so much. Im double tipping. They don't say anything about already adding on the gratuity, but make sure you check your bill before you leave another 20%

The view of marina is is very nice especially at sunset . Not bad for Koran owned Japanese restaurant... But as a Japanese restaurant, I have to give 2 stars though,,, After walking into the restaurant, within a few minutes, I could tell the owner was not Japanese because of it's decor and how the workers looked. There were at least 25 Japanese word mistakes on the menu. The funny thing was they put "Japanese lessons" on the back of the menu and they miss spelled both English words and Japanese words. Service was slow. Bottom line - good place to come ti have beer and little bite for sunset.

The main reason for dining here is the wonderful views of the ocean. The food and service are what you'd expect of a Japanese sushi and steakhouse. Prices are reasonable and service is attentive. Only downside: you have to decide if you are eating sushi or other menu items when you walk in. This means that everyone in your party has to eat the same dishes.

Sushi bar up front, benihana like in the back. We had the sushi. First off..no Asahi.."just sapporo" i guess i should pay attention to the namesake of the restaurant next time. We started with an appetizer that our group was unable to distinguish as seared tuna or beef.. Thats not a good sign. However, the sushi was fresh and tasty. we got a sushi boat so had a variety of different rolls and nigiri. My favorite is always salmon, which was very fresh. The ambiance is great. right on the water with exceptional views of the harbor especially with the incredibly calm weather.

The food is alright (sushi's decent), and the cooking at the tables fanfare is fun enough for the kids.. but it's just not worth the high prices. It's nice that you can take the kids and they can be as loud as they want. (this place is really loud - a lot of it's the chefs doing their thing) What is unacceptable is the service. he waiters are hard to track down once they've taken your initial order. And not only that - we were kicked out. Not for being loud, no, but for staying too long. Too long you say? That's understandable you say! But no, we were *still ordering food* we spent a tidy sum of money on order upon order of sushi, along with our original orders of regular table-cooked dishes. I understand that they'd like the traffic through the showy cooking tables to keep moving, but we were not a table that was losing them money. I might have even understood it if they had requested that we please move to another table, so that other customers could have the cooking experience - however they did not - we were rather rudely asked to stop ordering, and given our checks. I will never dine here again.

We loved this place! There is a nice view of the pier and the bay so that was a plus. We sat at the grill but we weren't really expecting a show but still it was enjoyable, the chef was really talkative. We had combos of chicken and shrimp and also had shrimp fried rice. Food was really good. We got in right before 2:00pm so the waiter was kind of rushing us out but that was our bad. Will definitly go back when I'm in town again.

Yum! I like to get the filet mignon because it literally jus melts in your mouth. The fried rice is good too and the miso as well. Very entertaining if you sit at a cooking table, they do alot of cool tricks and have great sense of humors. Definitley recommend it.

I tried giving this 4 1/2 stars. Our family had a great experience. We had 4 adults, a 4 year old, & 7 1/2 month old twins with us. Not all restaurants were very welcoming to our party, but Sapporo was totally accommodating and attentive to all of us. We sat at the tapanyaki table & didn't have any sushi. We had a blast and the kids were totally entertaining and the food was fabulous (each of us had different stuff- chicken, shrimp, lobster, filet mignon - cooked a perfect medium rare). Highly recommend! They even took our picture & sang to us when they found out we had just gotten married.

Great views that help to justify the premium for the benihana-style menu - dusk or sunset optimal. Kids loved the theatrics and loved our chef. Outing was memorable though food was not.

We've been there many times (but have never experienced the Teppanyaki dinner/show). However, the food is excellent, the service professional, and remarkable as we've always been consistently welcomed and attended. The view of the Monterey wharf is excellent.

The service was friendly and the food servings were more than sufficient. I had the teriyaki scallops, which I liked. My boyfriend had the bento box, which had a little of everything and was huge! He enjoyed all but the teriyaki chicken. The veggies have a great seasoning. Due to my fear of insects, the huge fly that kept circling our table was a little off putting. Great views all around the restaurant.

This is what benehana wants to be. Make sure to call ahead of time, even 10 minutes, and make a reservation for a cooking table! The lunch is pretty much the same as the dinner but 1/3rd the price. Great atmosphere! Great for parties.

We were in town for a college tour of UC Santa Cruz and came here for dinner to satisfy a sushi craving, which we suffer from frequently. We sat at the bar and had a wonderful and delicous array of sushi and sushi rolls, perfectly timed in their delivery! The hot sake totally hit the spot and capped the meal. I would definitely come here again :)

This place is not bad as a sushi bar. They have a nice 2nd floor location on the "working" wharf in Monterey. Nice views of the bay, and fishing boats. Distant views of Pebble Beach from the U shaped sushi bar. Down side is almost no one speaks Japanese in the part of the restaurant I ate. I think the owners might be Korean. Very nice Korean itamae-san (Sushi master)....speaks Japanese and is very skillful. Gave me plenty of sashimi "service" extras, no charge. Tako sashimi, spicy maguro sashimi. Nigiri fresh, especially Salmon. Maguro tuna was frozen. Sapporo serves GIANT Daimyo size hot sake bottles. Itamae bought me 2...i was smashed by the time I stumbled out of there down to the British Pub directly below. Not exactly a "nihon teki" experience. But, if you want a view, a cool sushi master who is generous and happy, and some pretty asian waitresses, try it out!

Went here for the first time awhile ago and the sushi side was horrible decided to go back and try the grill side and it was AMAZING got the chicken and it came with vegatables, shrimp, green tea, and friend rice for a $1 extra! Great service, will be back but to just the grill side!

I only go here for two reasons: group events(birthdays, etc) and bringing first timers. I do not go here for the food just like guys don't go to Hooters for the food. Besides a fun show on the hibachi grill and great views of the bay there is nothing else that makes me want to come here over other sushi spots. The food is mediocre, kind of expensive, and our last visit made my boyfriend sick from the sushi(weird cause his stomache is not weak).

I invited my grown son out for lunch and said he could pick the spot. He chose this place, though I had already read recent less than stellar reviews on Yelp. With a smile, we arrived about 1:15 on a Thursday afternoon. The dining room was almost empty..not a good sign. We were quickly seated, and I took in the lovely view of the harbor. This deserves five stars. My son ordered sushi and the fried scallops. I ordered the Bento box. I'm not big on sushi (I know, I'm weird), so my litmus test for Japanese food is about tempura. I love it. I do like California rolls, and the Bento box was to come with gyoza, chicken and salmon teriyaki. First, my lunch. A total bust, I am sorry to say. The tempura batter was soggy...not that crispy and light panko coating that I had hoped for. The chicken teriyaki was weak, reminding me of cheap brined chicken. It seemed like it was waved across the grill and sauce was poured on, like gravy. I ate two bites and moved on. The salmon, same thing. Meh. The gyoza was deep-fried! I didn't eat it, as it smelled really funky. My son liked the sushi, but I thought the deep-fried scallops were awful, just like the tempura. The waiter was nice, I will give him that. Would I come back here again? No. I tried it, and Yelp was right. I think the restaurant death toll is ringing, judging by how empty it was. They need new management and a shakeup in the kitchen with the chef, stat!

  • Lahlees M.

The sushi was good, but they got my order wrong. The teriyaki chicken was just not right. First of all it was dry. The teriyaki sauce was just poured on it, not even enough teriyaki sauce to call it a "teriyaki Chicken". You can tell the chicken was previously marinated with other spices that did not match the dish, the vegetables did not give that Japanese feel. They tasted too salty, and it just did not taste right. It did not go with the dish. A place are definitely not going back to. booo!

I'm shocked that this place gets any type of good review. If you are a sushi lover, you realize pretty quickly that this is not a good sushi place. Frankly, the sushi was AWFUL. I only give it 2 stars because the waiter and chefs were nice and pleasant. This is the worst sushi I've had in a restaurant.

No comment, too much negative experiences to say. I will eat at any sushi place but Sapporo! I love Udon noodles but theirs are flavorless & dried rubber! Prices are way too high! Services was very very bad & slow, workers need to learn how to pay attention & enunciation better! All I can say is this place is horrendous, horrific, & Hellesh! Let me just say, service is slow & bad, bad communications & courtesy, my first time ever not leaving a tip!

Have gone twice so far, both on the sushi bar side. The first time, sat at one of the tables and got sushi and small plates. Food was excellent, sushi was the best I've had here. Lost one star because the waiter was just odd. Second time I sat at the sushi bar and the entire experience was great.

    (4)
  • Russell S.

decent view first of all, lots of seal and otter sightings which are always fun...even if you do live here. the food is okay, i've had better...but the price is way too steep and this place caters heavily to tourists and their wonderful dollars. There is much better sushi in other areas of Monterey and Pacific Grove. I had been there once before for the tepanyaki and the show was pretty contrived and the food in small portions.

  • Cynthia P.

this place isn't bad. like other reviewers, i totally agree on the notion that it's a better choice than benihana. my friend and i shared one of the sushi boats -- for $50, we got enough raw fish (and it was of pretty decent quality and a nice variety too) to feed a family (or two chicks who really like to eat). it may or may not have made her sick -- the verdict's out on that one because the other people who indulged in the sushi didn't. edit: -2 stars. we came back for a follow up visit and were asked to leave the establishment because the sushi orders were coming in too fast! what kinda place kicks out people for ordering too much food, especially an item with a high markup such as sushi?

Me and my boyfriend were in town enjoying a great weekend when we also like ofer yelpers wanted to eat at benni hannahs... Finding out it had been closed for a few months! Eating at saporos made me realize why! There food was delicious ten million times tastier then BH. I ordered the shrimp and steak and fried rice. It was great! Oh ya... If u decide to order the fried calamari as an appetizer don't expect actual tentacle and biddy rings of a squid... They like to serve their calamari like little pieces of deep fried calamari steaks. I don't usually like calamari steak but there's was exceptionally good!! Our chef was great he even had some tricks of his own that got me!:) it was an enjoyable time and great food! I must say when eating Japanese you gotta drink sake! It tops it off I recommend the in unflitered sake. I wasbeing gluttonous by ordering dessert, but I took one for the team... You know? To be able to yelp about the FULL course of a meal is at Sapporo... Hahaha try the deep fried ice cream!!! It tatsed like a bannana split!! The service... It was good. The guy waiting on our table was attentive and fast with drinks.. Waiting for the chef to come and prepare our food took a bit. They have fewer chefs they do tables...

Meh. The teppanyaki was decent, but nothing special - certainly nothing compared to other restaurants like Benihana. The sushi was not all that great, and kind of expensive. You are definitely paying for the view, though, which is spectacular. Nice place to come for out-of-town guests, but not what I was looking for in a good Japanese restaurant. Also, how can you only serve Sapporo???!!! I know that's the name of the restaurant, but come on! At least throw in some Asahi or Kirin!

    (2)
  • Alex M.

This is much better than Benihana's. I would recommend coming here instead. The food is good and the view is spectacular. This is great for lunch option since the cost of lunch there is almost half the dinner price!

I went there for the first time on My 25th birthday and i LOVED it!! Dinner with a view of the Ocean is awesome, but imagine being entertained while your food is cooking?? its great, its turns your wait into a SHOW! you know how you go to a restuarant and you ask yourself "whats taking so long?" well you won't ask that here.. you can watch your shrimp and chicken, or steak get cooked, and there is NO questions about the freshness and if it was cooked fully.. you get to see the chefs do the job and WOW is it great.. flames and fun food!

After a couple of visits I am not really impressed with the show. I guess when you sit at a cooking table you just expect to be wowed but this week we were here and I think that our cook just did not want to be there. Maybe it's just luck of the draw with the cooks. I wasn't happy with my service either because we had to wait a long time to be checked on so we went without drinks. When I left I tipped according to my service and on the way out I was stopped by one of the guys that seated us and told that the receipt offered tip prices of 15, 20, and 25% tip rates of my bill. I was in shock that he was even asking me to change the tip amount on my payment. I did not have a party of 6 or 8 when you normally make sure to tip for the amount of people. I had 3 people in my party and there were only 9 people total in the whole restaurant. He spent his time sitting in the corner talking to some girl while we waited on drinks. Once I finally realized what he was trying to tell me and I said "Is this what you think I should pay for my tip?" he back off and said it's ok...it's ok. I was stunted. I did not leave 15% because he did not deserve it and I was being grilled on my way out the door. Talk about uncomfortable and the more the evening went on I wish I would have just explained why I tipped the way I did, but you know what.. a tip is optional for a small party so really for what we were paying and what we were expecting I think I might have tipped too much. The food wasn't bad and the view was great but the staff is what left a bad taste in my mouth. I seriously doubt that I will return to give them my business. If you go before 8 bring coins to pay for the meter.

This place was a NIGHTMARE! My husband and I were vacationing at Monterey and wanted to go to a sushi joint. We drove around the Fisherman's Wharf and spotted Sapporo. Since we didn't do any research, we thought we would randomly try this place out -- BAD mistake on our part. We should have known that if we want good sushi, we need to do our due diligence and research. So we walked in and were immediately greeted by the host. My initial thought was the restaurant was situated at a nice location overlooking the harbor. We were seated at our table but didn't get our menus until 10 minutes later. I decided to get the beef teriyaki (lunch special) and my husband decided to get veggie tempura and the rainbow roll. The waiter comes to our table and got our order -- he seemed pretty lifeless...just doing his job. Our food arrived pretty quickly which was really nice. Both of us shoved one of the rainbow rolls in our mouths and after 2 seconds later we both had the same unhappy look on our face. The fish wasn't fresh and it was completely tasteless. It reminded me of the pre-packaged sushi that you would buy at a generic supermarket......but WORSE -- I didn't think that was possible. The outer coating of the tempura was super soggy and thick. My husband had to peal off the fried layer and ate the veggie alone. And my dish, well, the steak was just so-so...nothing to rave about. The sauteed vegetables tasted like it was seasoned with one of those powered seasoning packages that you would get at the market. We could barely finish any of our food. The waiter came around to ask us if we wanted to box our food....and we politely declined and immediately asked for the check. We had to get the hell out of there! It was the most disgusting sushi restaurant we have every experienced in our lives!!! BEWARE - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

So here is the typical teppanyaki table cook in front of you action, with some sushi along the side. I am not going to lie though i kind of was less than floored as i usually am at these places. the menu is good and varied, steak, fish, etc. and with each prepared dinner you get salad, some miso soup and rice. the show isn't that great, maybe we just got a bad chef, he as dropping his spat quite a bit, which makes me a little fearful when the four foot column of fire makes its appearance. no casualties there. the food was really quite good though, i got the new york and some shrimps, yum. very well cooked and seasoned well, about 25 bucks for a typical plate and floor show. the sushi rolls are pretty tasty too, not the big showy dinner rolls that i usually prefer, but good to fill you up as a side dish, about 4-8 bucks each. for my experience, not quite worth the cash but good enough. humph.
