Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

This place is a mini-oasis of hot, fried, quick, and (relatively) cheap street food on the Monterey wharf boardwalk. The owner was also super nice to our family and said the place was dog friendly (bonus points for him and fried calamari for my puppy!).

This is my favorite restaurant at the wharf. I always end up choosing this over the others. First, the bread they give you is heavenly. It's warm with a crunchy outer layer, and soft and warm on the inside. They serve the bread with almost melted butter. (Don't you hate frozen butter?!) For appetizers, the oysters on the half shell at this place is so yummy & sweet. Another great choice for appetizers is the monterey calamari. This is the best calamari at the wharf IMO. You can try to request for more tentacles, too! :) The breading is thin and not overwhelming. It doesn't hide the tenderness of the squid. Really great! Another favorite of mine is the crab louie salad. Very good! For entrees, I usually order the special for the day. Recently, I had the alaskan halibut grilled with mashed potatoes and veggies on the side. The halibut was cooked perfectly. It was moist and have that grilled flavor like you cooked it outside. Yum! Usually, too full to order dessert. : )

Started off excited because they have abalone! And they had a variety of oysters, including oysters Rockefeller, yum! Ordered the abalone BLT sandwich (about 18 bucks, by the way) and an order of half oysters Rockefeller, half garlic & pesto. Well, they were definitely the worst oysters Rockefeller I've ever had. It seemed like canned puree of spinach with burnt cheese and the hollandaise sauce, I couldn't even taste. Forget about tasting the oyster. The saving grace of that appetizer was the garlic & pesto oysters, which were hot and quite tasty. Then the sandwich came...the abalone wasn't tenderized enough, and it would have tasted much better if it wasn't breaded because the whole thing was painfully DRY. The fries were good. The staff we encountered were very nice and didn't charge for the oysters. Also, we got a free calamari appetizer. But some of the calamari still had remnants of what looked like squid eggs. I'll be posting a picture of that. Feel bad writing a bad review because the service was good and the people were nice, but for supposedly being all about the abalone, this place just wasn't up to par.

Service was good, but a little slow. The indoor space is a bit too dark. The food is advertised Italian, but it wasn't anything great. Had the rockfish, which came with spinach and mashed potatoes. Spinach was tasteless, but had green pepper mixed in, making the whole dish burn my mouth out spicy, which was entirely unexpected and unlisted on the menu. The bits of tomato on the fish also came with spicy pepper, which I couldn't eat.

I descend upon Monterey every couple of years for the Internet Librarian conference and usually have a dinner somewhere on the wharf. I've gotten pretty tired of the usual chowder houses and almost gave up on this tradition. I am so glad I walked a little further to Abalonetti!! The fish is fresh and not greasy, the restaurant is well-lit and roomy, nice ambience, pleasant view--as most of the wharf restaurants do. GET THE CALAMARI!! Barbeque is the best!! Regarding the service, I'm not sure where the low marks came from. Our waiter and the host were extremely personable and friendly. In fact, the waiter let us ruminate over the menu for quite a while before giving us some recommendations that were spot on. We were even treated to a complimentary roasted garlic appetizer! I highly recommend walking a little further down the wharf to Abalonetti. I can't wait for my next trip !

Loved the Cioppino, such a good portion of so many fresh seafood: crab, big scallops, calamari, shrimp, salmon. Everything so fresh. Can I just repeat, fresh. It was not salty. The sourdough bread was crunchy. The Abalonetti (fried calamari) was good too. Sundays: raw oysters for 99 cents with lemon and shrimp cocktail sauce with a touch of horseradish. I love that combination! When you walk along the Fisherman's wharf, they tempt you with clam chowder. I didn't try everyone of them. I'll be too full.
(4)Chester L.
Best calamari you will ever have for this price! Ambiance was fantastic. The waiters were attentive. My girlfriend and I got a seat by the window so we could see the bay. Portion size is very generous. Definitely would come back here again.

Wary of tourist traps but armed with a Restaurant.com coupon, we settled into our waterfront table with low expectations. Abalonetti exceeded them. Coming off our highly instructive tour of the sardine industry exhibit and the Real Cost Cafe exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I ordered the sardines appetizer. 5-6 hefty sardines, perfectly grilled and sauced - well worth nine bucks. The calamari was pretty good too, especially compared to the chewy hunks at Woodies in Santa Cruz. We did well by ordering only appetizers (the sample platter was wonderfully Mediterranean and a low-commitment way to sample roasted Gilroy garlic bulbs) and the clam chowder. The entrees seemed to be a overpriced. Wished I had remembered the Yelp appetizer deal, but we did okay with the coupon. Sitting on the patio with my glass of draft local beer, eating roasted veggies, roasted calamari, hearing strains of Greek music from the Customs House plaza, I could easily imagine myself in Europe. A lovely experience overall.

Terrible customer service. Come in with a large party then.got yelled at by a manager bcuz we were taking up to many tables, even though before we came in there was only about 4 people in the restaurant. We kept getting ignored by servers and basically sat there for almost an hour and nobody was able to order food. Then we all saw the manager in the cooking area pointing and basically out right talking crap about all of us with the servers. I stared straight at them doing this at least five different times. All and all worst restaurant experience any of us have ever had. So rude
(1)Kristin P.
We were sold on the clam chowder outside so we ventured in for more delights. The calamari (their specialty) was delicious and we enjoyed our time in the restaurant.
(4)nick a.
Got the steak and lobster here and it was just ok, I kinda expected more quality since steak and lobster is usually the "ooh la la" dish..... My wife got the gnocchi....excellent!
(3)Morton L.
I would say the food is only fair... we had the calamari pasta, crab ravioli and the crab and pasta, and none of them were stand out in my opinion
(3)Ben T.
We ordered seafood pasta, sand dabs, and fresh oysters! We also received free calamari that was really good and garlic-y .The restaurant was very noisy yet pleasant. More of a family setting meant for tourists visiting monterey bay's fisherman's wharf. There were a lot of competing seafood restaurants along the strip and i felt that Abalonetti had some of the best food for its price. The waiters were really nice and the food was delicious. You can really taste the freshness in the seafood. All in all, this was a great restaurant and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Monterey Bay.
(5)Tim H.
I've been back here plenty of times since the original review - and have nearly always had the calamari only option - and it's never disappointed taste wise. Today was no exception, it still tasted great, when it eventually arrived. There was a line of folks ordering and the orders were numbered by the staff - but the staff never told anyone their numbers, so when the food started to come out, there was mass confusion. I'd almost finished my calamari before my friend (who'd ordered before I did) got her fish and chips. I've seen this place busy before, so it's not like it was the first time. Maybe they should start handing out numbers on blocks etc. so that the orders go directly to the right people. Today's kerfuffle cost them a star - food's still great though!
(3)Peter G.
Volume, volume, volume - get 'em in and out fast. This place is fine. Atmosphere is okay - not much different than any of the wharf restaurants. Calamari appetizer was pretty good. Fish and Chips - weak - fish was not crispy - seemed to have uncooked batter still between the outside and the fish. (3 of the 6 of our group had Fish & Chips). Other items were just okay. Service - friendly enough, but not particularly attentive or skilled.
(3)Nassim F.
Update: The owner was nice enough to offer me my money back, and he was not clearly aware of the situation (the greedy unprofessional waiter). So, I decided to add two more star just for the owner's polite response. ---------- I took a couple of my cousins to Monterey, and I chose this restaurant randomly for a late lunch. The service was not so friendly, but we decided to put up with it. We ordered pizza, pasta, sandwich and an appetizer. None of the dishes were good. Yet, the worst, on my check, THEY CHARGED ME THE TIP WITHOUT ASKING! (WE WERE ONLY THREE PEOPLE) Now, that was RUDE, I never had such an experience that a restaurant would charge you for a tip automatically for a party of 3! I will never go back
(3)Bannister C.
Great clam chowder, I think it's maybe 2nd best among what I tasted passing through. I ate here because they had good clams on the half shell and decent fish and chips. A great lunch for not over $25, early June 2012. A solid place and I will likely come back again to try dinner next time. Overall menu seems reasonable compared to the others within the pier.
(3)Frank B.
Took my wife here for her Birthday a few weeks ago. Calamari was the best I have ever had! Service was good, price was resonable for the area. Clam Chowder was very rich tasting. Had a great view of the pier watched the boats come in.....Be back again soon.
(4)Chad A.
Tasteless food. The calamari is ok. Other than that we had the Ahi Tuna and the seafood pasta and they both were horrible.
(1)Kianna P.
This place has the worst service and horrible food. The waiter was so rude, it too forever to get him to come back for help. We asked him for the bill and it took 10 minutes when it was dead slow. I had a burger with fries, the meat was rare when I asked mediu and they definatly just re-fried the fries. They were not fresh. All in all this place is disgusting and the service is horrible. Never coming back.

So let me be straight forward here. If we had only had the calamari appetizer I would have hands down given Abalonetti a 4 or even maybe 5 star rating. To start with the good... Their calamari is amazing. Honestly the best I have had on fisherman's wharf. It is crisp on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. What is even better is that they serve it many different ways. We decided on a combination of 3 types..the Baja style, buffalo style, and garlic. The Baja style is so good. It comes with a nice lite chipotle type sauce and fresh pico de gallo with plenty of tomatoes. Normally, calamari is a heavy food but the tomatoes were so fresh that it completely transformed the calamari and made it light and refreshing almost. The Buffalo style is great as well. Just like a buffalo wing but calamari instead. (Why haven't other people thought of this!?) Finally the garlic one style is yummy too..but I have to say I was smelling like garlic for the rest of the day. They do not hold back! All three were excellent and the portion was really large. It was complete with three types of dipping sauces for us. We honestly would've been just fine having the appetizer as our meal. 5 stars on that for sure. We were pretty full by the end of it! However, we ordered entrees anyway. Here is where I get a little...put off I guess. For my entree I ordered a chicken ceaser salad and my boyfriend got the clam chowder in a bread bowl. Easy meals. I had a final afterwards so we didn't want anything too crazy. Once we finished our appetizer we were sitting there for a good 15-20 mintues waiting for our entrees. Normally this wouldn't bother me but like I said we only ordered a salad and clam chowder...which is normally pre-made right? The other thing that was a little weird was the chicken on my ceasar salad. They took all that time fixing it up so I was expecting it to be great. Honestly it was a little off looking. Reminded me of those chicken breasts that you buy pre cooked and all you have to do is heat it up in the microwave. You know..a throw back to the cafeteria lunch school days? It really wasnt terrible just not worthy of being priced $13.00. The clam chowder was good but my BF was a little dissapointed that it wasnt warmer. These are just the little things. Nothing tremendous just...off. I do have to compliment our waitress. I notice the little things and at one point she poured us more iced tea. Before I could say anything about there not being a whole lot of ice in the refill she quickly brought us over a large glass filled with fresh ice. I appreciated she noticed that. To sum it up... If someone asks me where they can get the best calamari? I will 100% say abalonetti.

Best clam chowder in monterey
(5)Tenny W.
Came in here strictly because of the sign that they had outside. " Mango margaritas, house margaritas and long islands $2.99 ALL DAY EVERYDAY" UM YES PLEASE! - this review is for the bar only. Having spent a fortune on food for the day, we wanted to find a nice place to chill and have a drink and this place served the purpose. The margaritas were pre-made and put in plastic bottles, kinda sketchy but i gave it a try anyways. I got the mango margarita while the bf got the house. At first it didn't taste like anything but beware, the drinks can sneak up on you and knock you off the bar stool if you're not careful! Service- our bartender looked like either the manager or the owner. It almost seemed like because of lack of business, he had to fire his bartender, serve drinks himself and have $2.99 drink specials. He wasn't the most friendliest bartender I've ever had but hey, he did his job. Another round later and the tab was around $12 bucks, definitely worth it if you are tired of walking and just want to grab a drink that won't break the bank.

One star off for waiting times but overall ~ love eating here! We have been dining here for lunch for too many years to count ~ a very dear friend of ours (she's like a second mother to me!) who is from Sicily took us here many years ago with her dear husband. Since then, we have been fans of this place for their well turned seafood and pasta selections. Ask for a table with a view and you'll have a grand time! We usually skip the dessert so I can get cotton candy or fudge at the candy shop a few doors down....this restaurant is on the actual pier which is lined with an assortment of shops to walk around and look at to work off the calories you consumed. Enjoy!

The chowder from the hawker was going to push us away as it tasted water down but the ones we ordered from inside was pretty tasty. I went in because of the all day happy hour deal. $3 margarita and $0.99 oysters. We also had the calamari and fries were good as it was thick and soft and not chewy as I had expected. Overall food would have been a solid 4 stars. Then comes the service as I believe service must be link in a restaurant's review. I came with a teenager and a 10 year old and we had been biking, the kids didn't get any margaritas. Servers would not look at us. After finally ordering I had to ask for bread. I also had to ask for water. We sat in the middle of the room next to other tables. The place was half full with plenty of wait staff but they just would not serve us. Either they were racist and/or did not respect us and think we are too young or something.
(3)Tsou D.
We've gone lots of times in the past, but something happened and it's all downhill here. Meh. Terrible captain, terrible wait staff, and terrible food.
(2)dave m.
The service at this place sucks. ESPECIALLY if you sit outside on the patio, it's like your in the twilight zone. I used to like this place, they do have a decent clam chowder but can't get past the lack of service anymore.
(2)James R.
Excellent clam chowder and dungeness crab. Pet friendly and they even have a doggy menu. Service was excellent.
(5)Leilani Q.
We ate in the "shack" as even the peeps @ the counter called it. haha..isnt that funny? FOOD: The clam chowder was dee best. Every time I come here I try as much samples from all the different spots (hoping I'll get full, just kidding...sorta), this place is my favorite thus far. As I type im wondering if hubby has any clam chowder left from the trip, it was yummy! Grandma had the calamari, sampled hers, luved it so I got my own. It was decently portioned, I didn;t even finish it! If you want lemon, & I like plenty. theres a red sauce & lemon buffet to the right of the register. Seriously, i dunno if it was a calamari good day, but it was probably one of the best i ever had(not THE best, the best for me is probably Paesanos in Elk Grove). Hubby had the oysters on the half shell. He said they were small baby oysters..how sad huh, poor oysters miss they're mama..anyway it was about 5 or 6 cant recall how many pieces.. PRICES: Well I didn't pay but according to grams the prices were "cheap'. And so I'm pretty sure they are cuz grams don't like to spend no money! haha. :) AMBIENCE: It was ok. I mean its Monterey, where u can find love, stink, homeless, foufou & poopoo all in the same hood. Personally I find the oldness & stinky seasmell sweet & loving & it's all good n gravy to me. There are like 4-top tables I think, its like blue (this is the shack im talking bout now, not the restaurant down a lil way, that part is very nice) & stuff. I dunno, it reminds me of being on a fishing boat where they catch fish n crabs n stuff, where a guy named Skipper might live. I'm cool with it, i dig it. PEOPLE: Mark or Marc is the MAN! He's so nice. He looked like a manager/owner cuz hes dressed in not-uniform but he says hes not the owner. He came to our table at least 3 times asking if we needed anything, if anythings ok. He might have took plates away form our table. He'd walk over n glance @ our table to see if we're ok. He joked around with us. In fact when he was pouring my clam chowder he stopped maybe a millimeter short of the top rim, I asked him to fill it up 2 the top, & he said sure with no problem. He joked he'd refill ours later after we ate some if we wanted, we didn't take him seriously, but he really did refill ours! Later on he entertained my 5 year old & said if she comes with him later he'll give her a "surprise". Turned out he walked my 5 yr old & 9 yr old niece to the "real restaurant" a lil ways down & the surprise was 2 oyster shells that he said would give her "good luck" & help her with grades in school. I told her she could make it into a seashell bra like Ariel from The Little Mermaid, haha! IN A NUT: Yes id go back every single time i hit up the coast! I 100% dig mom n pop looking shops with good food n good people any day over fancy shwancy shops that are immaculate with snobby peeps anyday.

Ok, Seattleite here. Would never go to my own waterfront butnthese locals do. This place offers the locals parking and a special menu! Jealous. My server offered me a 2.95 side of veggies which keep me healthy on the road. Marthy's special calamari is ok but I cook so kinda soggy breach. Happy hour margarita sucks, imo. So switched to house Pinot. Would come again if hadn't spent 25 min looking for street parking! Nice people and ambience... Clam chowder salespeople all along the way very funny to me. Sorry!
(4)Art P.
Oysters at the.99 rate good. Ordered seafood combo very small portions only 2 of each item. Not worth the $18.00 price
(2)Cheryl M.
We are locals and had never been to this particular wharf restaurant. My husband and I went there last night. The chowder is the only reason it gets even one star. The service was horrible, our server looked and sounded stoned and was so slow it was painful. We even had to ask twice for bread! The margarita was just about the worst I have ever had and the crab ravioli was dry, like it had been sitting out a while. For $19.95 I got five raviolis and three small shrimp (they called them prawns, but these were the smallest ones I had ever seen). My husband ordered deep fried prawns and got the same small shrimp with soggy fries. People around us were grumbling about the slow service too. I know it is a holiday weekend, but they were not crowded at all. Don't waste your money.

Came here as part of a wedding rehearsal dinner, so it was not the same experience as a walk in customer would have as we were a very large group. I had the parmesan crusted chicken and it was mouth watering. The service was fine, the atmosphere was nice, the waiter opened the glass doors (that I thought was a wall of windows) to provide a nice breeze. I would definitely eat here again - and plan to next time I'm in the area!
(5)Tom W.
Pros: Italian Seafood was not bad at all! Full Bar Located at Warf Cons: Vibe and atmosphere felt like a cheap chain Waiter looked upset when we only ordered wine and oysters. I think he was expecting more order so he can get a bigger tip. That dude should not be in the service industry.
(3)Dan D.
How sad it is that restaurants on the wharf think that they can steal from tourists. Luckily, I'm a local, and know better. Took some friends to see if it lived up to the hype. On the walk there we sampled all of the clam chowder available, and found Abalonetti's to acceptable, but the least flavorful. It got worse from there. I ordered the Fried Seafood Combo for $18.95. Fish and Chips was $13.95, but I thought I'd splurge and get a big plate. The chefs thought not. My plate had one tiny piece of fish a little bigger than my thumb, two shrimp, and a piece of calamari that looked like a fortune cookie - shape and size. That's all, folks. I asked the waiter if that was all I would get for $20 and he looked confused. I had them take it away, as what they offered was insulting. Other restaurants on the wharf have small portions, too, but this was taking it to the extreme. My friend had the steak, and could only eat a small bit as it was full of chewy gristle. Another friend had the Shrimp Louie, which apparently means old salad shrimp unthawed and thrown together with mayo. We needed some drinks to endure the meals, so we had the $2.99 specials - margaritas and beer. The beer tasted great, but the glasses seemed small. At every step this place cut corners and gave little in exchange for your money. You can have bad food and a lot of it, you can have great food and a little of it, but you can't have bad food and a little of it and expect people to return. Save your time, enjoy the wharf, try the clam chowder samples along the way, and if you really want good seafood make a drive to the Fish House on Del Monte. For well under $20 a person, you'll leave satisfied. Or try Bubba Gumps if you want quantity. Here, you're just being ripped off.

Below average here. Did a walk in and was not impressed even in term of mediocrity. Clam Chowder - have had way better chowder. It just wasn't creamy and to the taste that I'm accustomed to. Calamari Steak - I love calamari. I just love the fried, appetizer ones more so. This was too much calamari, I was expecting something fried I guess. Service was pretty good. Our server as fairly attentive and she had this super, hipster like do of a hair! I enjoyed it. Service with a smile! In a nutshall, if I had to do it all again I'd choose somewhere else. For the price vs quality balance I didn't find it that reasonable.
(2)Christie R.
My friend and I walked Fisherman's Wharf and reviewed several different restaurant menus. We ended up choosing Abolonetti Seafood because it had the dishes we were interested in: Cioppino & Blackened Salmon salad (both at a fair price, especially compared to the other wharf restaurants). The cioppino was delicious with plenty of fresh seafood and the salmon filet was very generous, cooked perfectly, and served atop fresh greens with a nice vinegarette dressing. We were both extremely pleased with our meals. The ambiance was pleasant and we had a beautiful view of the bay and shoreline. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. Overall a very pleasant dining experience.
(5)Brian L.
First off, dont forget to mention you saw this place on yelp and you can receive a complementary plate of calamari. The normal calmari was good, cooked to the point of tenderness but not too soft. We also ordered some of the garlic calamari, which i would not recommend. It was just the ordinary calamari with a gigantic heap of garlic piled on top, way too much. I would have liked to try the other two types of calmari they offered, buffalo and baja style. It would be nice if they offered some kind of calmari sampler, to get a chance to try the other ones. My girlfriend ordered the salmon dinner, which had pretty bad presentation. Roasted potatoes and sauteed spinach looked like they were sitting under a warmer for a while. And the salmon piece had sauce that was just slopped on. She enjoyed it so i guess it was decent, but if the chef exerted a few more seconds to make the plate look nice, it would have went a long way. I ordered a pesto pizza, with pine nuts, feta cheese, and eggplant. It was good in taste and presentation, but the pizza was way too oily. The oils from the cheese were compounded by the pesto oils resulting in a soggy pizza that had me asking for more napkins. If you order this pizza, ask for light cheese and crispier crust to compensate for this. We also ordered a chocolate souffle, which was standard desert affair. This place gets additional thumbs up for being dog friendly, and also very nice atmosphere with views of the bay.

Anniversary weekend getaway. Used a $50 coupon from restaurant.com . The caprese salad was weird. Had balsamic on two tomato slices about 1/2" thick, mazzarella cheese and shredded basil. All that, on top of lettuce, green onions, red onions and black olives. It tasted fine but very non traditional serving style. Also had the sardines with tomato sauce. Came with four large sardines. Tasted great but worked hard to clear all the bones (not a reflection of the restaurant). Also had the New York strip steak. Very large portion. Came with mashed potatoes (creamy, tasty), mixed vegetables (bland, lifeless). Overall, good service, pleasent experience. We would go again.
(3)Erin M.
Overall I would recommend this restaurant. I felt the staff was accommodating, friendly and the atmosphere comfortable. Food was good (I had the clams and linguine) and prices seemed on par. Service was a little slow, but most of the tables were full and it seemed busy.
(3)Tuan P.
Garlic calamari is tasty when added to the veg linguine. Kid pizza is quite large. 1 salad, cup chowder, kid meal, 2 entree, side of broccoli = $64. Pricy but it's in the wharf so expected for tourists. Restaurant.com $25 certificate knocked it down to $50 after tax and tip. No validation from any wharf entity for parking lot.
(3)Samuel M.
4 stars for the clam chowder, so far the chowder here ranks second on my list just behind Gilberts.
(4)Debra G.
My sister and I both ordered the exact same meal, a cup of clam chowder and the fried mixed seafood. The clam chowder was VERY good, but the fried seafood was not good at all. The calamari was soggy and greasy. The fries were good, and the battered halibut was good. But later that day both my sister and I were sick. Something on that fried platter was not good and it made us both sick. There are plenty of other choices on the wharf - next time I will try one of the other choices.
(2)P C.
The service was terrible. The waiter brought me a different wine than I ordered, then didn't even ask surprised or apologetic when I complained - just said they didn't have the other one available by the glass. Then he brought the wrong food by mistake (generally not a big deal on its own). Then he tried to convince me that I still needed to tip, even though a mandatory 18% gratuity was already added to my bill as part of the voucher I was using. Like I can't read? Like he thought he deserved a 35% tip after his shenanigans? The only reason it's not one star is that the abolone was excellent. The sardines were mediocre to poor, and the fried oysters were good.
(2)Toni M.
Let's call it 4 1/2 stars. I can't remember when I first ate at Abalonetti or w/ whom, but I think it was sometime in the early/mid 70s because I was already familiar w/ it when I introduced Alan to calamari w/ tentacles there in 1979 or '80. Tam had *her* first calamari w/ tentacles here when she was 10 or 12. Sometime in the '90s they remodeled and tarted the place up. It was a shock, kind of like seeing your favorite dowdy auntie suddenly start sporting sparkly teal eye shadow and a pushup bra. We stopped going there for a while because it no longer felt familiar and comfortable, but eventually we returned and found the food as good as ever. We've been bringing DGD to Abalonetti most years when we take our trip w/ her to the Monterey Peninsula. Because we didn't eat here last year, we decided to have dinner here tonight. It's settled in to its remodeled state and has once again become comfortably familiar. We ordered a fried calamari appetizer, a counter to the disappointing calamari we had last. We had a coupon for a chef's choice appetizer, a couple of heads of roasted garlic w/ slices of toasted bread and some vegetables. Rather than the crusty sourdough bread they used to serve, they now offer ciabatta. Either way it's good. Alan ordered a local wheat beer to drink and I had a glass of Gnarly Head Zinfandel which was fruity and flavorful. DGD and I shared a Sicilian bread salad, which the chef split for us. It was tasty, but wasn't like other bread salads I've had, in that the bread was less prominent. It was more like a conventional, though delicious, salad w/ croutons. Alan ordered a calamari combo, a longtime favorite of ours, calamari prepared three different ways. DGD ordered linguini w/ clams and I ordered cioppino. We were all pleased w/ our entrees and agreed we would order them again. I was particularly pleased w/ my cioppino, which was full of clams, mussels, crab, scallops, fish, calamari, shrimp and God knows what all else in a deliciously messy marinara. Good doesn't even begin to describe it. Joe, our server, was engaging and efficient. He tried to entice us into dessert, but we were sated. We'll be back.

We ate here today, based on some Yelp Reviews. The $3 margaritas were pretty weak, not good. We received the free calamari appetizer because we mentioned Yelp and it was decent. The complimentary bread was not "amazing" per another reviewer, but what was good, it was so basic, we only ate the original 4 small tiny pieces. I ordered the Pacific Swordfish which was pretty good, and wife ordered the fish and chips which was terrible to me. So, overall based on my main entree, the place was 2 1/2 - 3 stars. The ice water was delicious.

I personally don't do seafood, never grew up with it, so it's not something I enjoy. That being said, our main reason for going here was for my son. I read the back and forth Yelps on this place, but it seemed like we should try it. The reason it isn't five stars... is because both my husband and I thought it deserved 3, but my son thought the seafood was amazing so we bumped it up to 4. First off, this place has to be popular, people had reservations and locals were eating here, versus some of the other sit down places. (I thought it was cool how every restaurant gave out free samples of their chowder, very cool). When we sat down, we had an awesome Host, but our server? Okay he gave me a glass with lip marks on it and a dirty spoon that I couldn't even wipe clean if I wanted to. Ewwwwww... bad first impression. We had gone online, and printed their menu, so we already knew what we wanted. I got the hand made gnocchi with Gorgonzola sauce. Now had I not just had the best gnocchi EVER two weeks before, I would have thought it was amazing... but (see earlier comment). My husband went with a grilled fish, I was surprised... but we were saving our money for our son to have the best experience ever. We got the free appetizer for saying we saw them on Yelp and my husband and son scarfed that Calamari! My son got the whole dungenous crab! It was so fun to watch him eat it and he loved it!!! For some reason, we no longer had our server, waiting on us. Instead our Host continued to take care of us, which made us very happy. The place is right on the water and open to the sea air on most sides. The seafood was good I am told, and the Host was great. The place looked a little tired and run down, but the locals were still eating here. So I understand some of the not so good reviews. I say if you want fresh seafood at a sit down place, go here, if you want something else or don't mind standing to eat... maybe there is another place on the Warf. For us it was a once in a life time experience for our son. He was extremely happy, so we were too!

The calamari was amazing. We mentioned Yelp and received a free order of it. My husband got oysters, which were only 99 cents each, wohoo. Both of those were very good. We also ordered the anti pasta bar plate, which was a little bit of a let down. The wait staff was amazing and I am glad we went here for the calamari.

We arrived at 4pm and were excited to see a sign for a happy hour special on margaritas. The hostess asked if we wanted dinner and was appalled when we said "just drinks." It was only 4:00, who eats dinner then? Also, when you advertise a happy hour why are you surprised when people want it? So we sit and order our margaritas and before we get them she tells us what we owe and brings the check. For someone in the service industry, in a tourist town, they sure aren't very nice. Go across the way for happy hour.

The competition for the best chowder on Fisherman's Wharf is fierce - lots of places offering chowder tasting and free appetizers. We decided to try Abalonetti for its interestingly peppery chowder. The chef's choice appetizer was bruschetta - which was cold and just okay. The stuffed salmon was huge and filled with shrimp, crabmeat and artichoke. Came with mashed potatoes, fresh chopped tomatoes and spinach. It was absolutely delicious. The seafood pasta comprised of penne pasta and a delightful, generous mix of shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari, bathed in a light red sauce. It tasted fresh. Seafood heaven! Overall - the free appetizer was lacking. But the chowder and the seafood were tasty and fresh. Great window view of the water too!

Service was excellent, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful!!! Their food on the other hand was pretty average with exception of their buffalo flash fried calamari. There really aren't a lot of good places to eat on the pier and fishermans grotto is completely overrated, (it's always hit or miss there.) I ordered the buffalo fried calamari which I can't say I loved but enjoyed because it was so different and a crab sandwich from their lunch menu (which was generously filled with crab meat.) dont get me wrong the food was good but i live in san francisco and can get a good crab sandwich from boudins anytime, I was looking more for something unique that Would give me that Monterey feeling. Maybe I just expect to much sometimes but I like visiting and eating places that have a unique taste that separates them from surrounding restaurants, especially when there are so many to choose from. Next time I come down to Monterey for a little getaway I think I might give them another shot, maybe dinner isn't their forte

Well we tried this even though the general run of Fisherman's wharfs restaurants are pretty mediocre. This is a mid grade place-not outstanding like the Fish House, but not the bottom of the barrel. It has outstanding views and drinks, food is a little on the heavy side with a lot of fried dishes, friendly service and mid to high prices. You won't go to far wrong, but shouldn't expect any wonderful surprises. The Calamari can be good, as they resist the tendency to overbread it like so many of their competitors.

Probably the worst lunch I have ever had at a restaurant. I should have known that when the place was pretty empty on Saturday at lunchtime. We were attracted to the patio area, and then it all went downhill. We were excited to hear that they had calamari steaks instead of the traditional rings. At our table we tried the cutlets, calamari sandwich, calamari and fries, and stuffed calamari. Everything was incredibly fishy and tasted like shoe leather. We were so disapointed that when the server came back and asked how it was I told him that it wasn't very good. He response was "oh, really. ok" I am sure he hears that a lot. To top it off, our lunch for 4 was $100. NEVER AGAIN.

I can not say enough about my positive experience here! I made reservations and then changed them 3 times and showed up late in the end anyway. (On an incredibly busy weekend!) There were four in our party and they still managed to give us a window table after a brief wait at the bar with a very attentive bartender. I think we waited 10-15 minutes (They were packed!), but during that time at least 3 people checked on us and let us know they were working on it. Our waiter, Joe, gave us the BEST SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD IN MONTEREY. He was patient with our indecisiveness and gave us honest recommendations. We had the traditional calamari and it was great. The Halibut special was cooked perfectly and the sides were super yummy!

Stepped in to this restaurant while the family shopped the pier. Nice place for a local beer and 99 cent oysters!
(3)Nick L.
Ended up there on a Saturday night/8PM after a higher-rated restaurant on the wharf told us that it'd be a 90 minute wait. Here, the wait was about 10 minutes. Friendly staff (a critical item for our family) and we were served promptly, but not intrusively. Clam chowder was surprisingly delicious. All the food was flavorful. Particularly liked the halibut. Everyone in our party liked their food - a rarity :-) Apparently a second tier restaurant on the wharf, but I will go there directly on my next visit.
(4)Chris B.
I saw the Happy Hour prices on the menu, and was intrigued by the prices and the menu,$2.99 margaritas, and $.99 oysters. The margaritas were not the best tasting, cheap liquor, but they got the job done for the right price. Walked out with a $15 bill after a few margaritas and some Oysters, Can't complain.
(3)jerad m.
The calamari is by far the best on the wharf, nobody's on the wharf compares. The service is prompt and delightful and I don't think there is anything on the menu that could find that you wouldn't like, it's all delicious. They have a great view of the bay and a very nice ambiance in the restaurant and also very nice outdoor seating. You have to try it, you will find yourself going back all the time. I give it a 10 out of 10.
(5)N C.
Calamari was tender but I've had better. Clam chowder was a little thin but the flavor was good. The Cioppino was okay...the crab and mussels were not fresh but the scallops were good. Would probably not eat here again and try some other seafood places.
(3)Marcus K.
Came in on a Thursday night and got seated right away. Ordered the dungeness crab with angel hair pasta. Asked for wine suggestions and the waiter let us try some wine before ordering. We settled for a bottle of Hahn chardonnay. Combine all that with great company and it was an excellent meal. Delicious. The chocolate desert was out of this world!! Ill be back for sure.
(5)Cori W.
We called in to see how busy they were and was told to make reservations. We get there and it's completely empty save for 2-3 tables! Anyway, the food was good but the service sucked! I enjoyed the grilled vegetable appetizer and it was pretty tasty with zucchini, squash, roasted bell peppers, fennel and eggplant. I had the pizza neapolitan and it was okay, the crust was good and it had a lot of basil and olives on it however the sauce was rather bland. My favorite dish of the evening was the angel hair pasta with tomato sauce. The pasta definitely tasted fresh and the sauce was simple and perfect. The negative for this place was our service. The server was constantly out of sight when we needed something and we had to continually look for him as he forgot 2 drinks throughout the night. I cannot vouch for the seafood as I was looking for something more vegetarian friendly.
(3)Kristin E.
Went her for dinner after reading some positive reviews. We started with the "we found you on yelp" appetizer. It was calamari. I am a total calamari whole so I am a pretty good judge, it was super yummy! Very meaty and not to oily. The other thing I have to rave about before better to my next rave is the bread. We all know how every restaurant on the coast serves sour dough bread, well this bread is the BEST! It is not only fresh baked but has that homemade bread flavor. It really is good. Now on to the next rave, the food! I ordered Marty's special which was a calamari Parmesan / eggplant Parmesan. It was tender and so flavorful! It doesn't come with any pasta which is TOTALLY fine because who needs the extra carbs anyway? But really the calamari and eggplant are enough. Our waiter was also great, his name was Joe and so so nice! We will definitely be back to this little jewel on the wharf!!

In all fairness, my 3-stars is based on the disclosure that I wasn't very hungry when I came here; I was in a business meeting. I used my YELP perk, and we received a free order of fried calamari. They were crispy and non-greasy. The problem was, that most of the calamari came with tentacles. I have an aversion to that. I tried to muster the courage, but I couldn't eat it. I felt bad, since it was FREE and I don't like to waste food-- especially a creature that became a food offering. We tried to sit outside, since it was 70-plus degrees outside... a welcome change from the heavy rain we've been experiencing. We got really hot, since there aren't any umbrellas, so we had to move inside. Our waiter-- my friend and I giggled. He looked frazzled, and almost like he was a customer who decided to wait on our table. He didn't wear any kind of uniform, his hair was in disarray. Keep in mind, the place was pretty empty at 2:00pm. Opting for a light meal, we both ordered the Bread Salad for $7.95. The croutons were good, and the garlic was definitely HEAVY. There were too many olives, though. Overall, I was thankful to nibble on some tomatoes and cucumber, and the vinaigrette was quite good. I'd like to come back and try the sand dabs for lunch, when I have more of an appetite. The waiter did tell us that if I showed my ID to prove I'm a local, that I'd get 2-hours free parking. Since he gave me a good tip, I gave him one back. Worth a try. Next time, I'll come hungrier.

Worst dining experience ever. Cioppino was terrible, and the bartender told me "that's how we do it here." sent it back and would have walked out had I not been with friends. That was my original review. Ken D. (I assume he has a relationship with the restaurant, which he doesn't disclose in violation of Yelp rules, because he knows about my experience there) wrote this to me: "You forgot to mention that you refused to taste it." He's right, and here's why: When they learn how to make it, I'll taste it. I ordered cioppino and got a seafood platter (with a little red sauce), and then they tried to make me feel guilty for sending it back -- something I've never done before -- by saying "we've always made it that way". If I order a hot dog and you bring me a hamburger, it may be a great hamburger, but it wouldn't be what I ordered, and calling it a hot dog wouldn't change that.

Love the antipasto plate. We usually order a full plate and share, taste good with the bread they serve. I'm not into fish that much, so I ordered a small pizza once and it was just ok. But they are known for seafood, so I guess if you are ordering something else than you need to expect just ok. They had $.99 cents oyster specials and the last time I went I had clam chowder and it was pretty good. Our waiter was the same both times and he was very nice. We also got the free appetizer special. I had a Peach Margarita and wow it was good and got to me a little after just one.
(5)Katie P.
Ok seriously I think this was the best meal I've have in 10 years. I had a free calamari app for mentioning yelp, pesto oysters, and antipasto. I'm all about variety and was very satisfied. My waiter Carlos was also very nice, helpful and cute. Definitely coming back.

Little kids friendly. We were sat by the window away from other guests as requested. cups w/ covers, crayons and drawing paper, nice children's menu, little things that makes parents very happy. Clam Chowder - 3 stars. It's decent. Not to die for. Old Fishermen's Grotto was better. Bread - very fresh. I am not a bread person but it was good Seafood w/ Angel Hair Pasta, 4.5 stars. Very light sauce w/ super fresh seafood cooked to perfection. You know they can cook when you taste the gigantic scallop and it isn't overcooked. Calamari Cutlets - 2 Stars. yes I know everyone for some reason raves about the calamari here but this one I thought it tasted WAY too salty and I like salty too. The breading tasted too much like Contadina's breading. Definately go back again.

Went here with a group of ten while I was in town for a conference for my job. The service was great, the food was delicious what more could you ask for? I ordered the calamari with garlic. The calamari was great but the garlic was a little much. I also went in with a friend for the full order of the antipasto platter...Highly reccommend! Eggplant, roasted garlic, olives, goat cheese and other delicious nibbles. Other people in my party ordered the Tuna, a pizza, and halibut. Everyone seemed to enjoy what they ordered except for my friend who got the pizza...she doesn't do seafood. Poor thing had bad food all week :( Anyway, I will definately be back!

I'd like to give in 3.5 stars, but that's not an option. They get dinged because they ran out of pizza. What kind of an Italian place runs out of pizza? They also get dinged because we ordered angel hair pasta with marinara sauce on the side. Now, most people don't order pasta with sauce on the side, so the first time they brought it out the sauce was on the pasta. We repeated our request for it on the side, and they brought out a fresh serving of angel hair pasta with cheese and parsley with the sauce on the side. Immediate resolution to an unusual request, so there's no problem and no mark down for that. No, the issue is that the marinara sauce was awful--tasted like dirt. Seriously. On to the good stuff. The anitpasto platter was yummy, the plain pasta was good, the calamari was good (but not the best ever--that's at Flaherty's in Carmel), and the service was good. They accommodated my large group (us plus visitors, meaning several young kids), and even gave us a lighter when we asked for matches on our way out. A couple of suggestions for the restaurant: when a large group asks for bread, you should probably give them more than four slices (remedied on subsequent requests). Also, can you put a changing table in your men's room? That would have made my life easier. We didn't have the clam chowder, but here's how to find the good stuff. #1: They do NOT offer free samples in front. #2: It does NOT have celery in it! Celery in clam chowder means they got it out of a food service bag instead of making it themselves, and it will taste like a school cafeteria's version of clam chowder. Bottom Line: As a local, I generally stay away from Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, but if I had visitors who wanted to eat at the former, I would say I had a good experience at Abalonetti.
(3)Alani N.
1st- bread is amazing and served warm! Delicious! My Caprese salad was different- whole halves of tomatoes with mozzarella and sliced basil on top- but still good- just not as fresh tasting. The fire grilled oysters with garlic were phenomenal! The calamari steak was out of this world and the pepperoni pizza was super cheesy and perfect!
(5)Kathleen Y.
I went here with my family last week and it was not very good. As a child I remember it being good but it has definitely gone downhill. The staff is very friendly but that's about it. I ordered the fish and chips and it was extremely greasy and not very tasty. My dad ordered the clam chowder and compared to Fisherman's Grotto on the wharf it was absolutely nothing special. The best thing we ate was the bread they brought out in the beginning. For the money it was not worth it at all.
(2)Rodale C.
Went to Abalonetti cause they were rated best calamari 04' 05' and 10' and so on. I love calamari so I has to try it out. As a kid my dad always took me to crabby jims. So I had the calamari at Abalonetti and the calamari fried steak. I was surprised that the calamari was the body pieces and so thick and soft, not so chewy. The food was great, took them awhile(a great while) to get our order though cause there were only two waiter/tress and it was a Friday= reason for the missing star.

A great restaurant but a cautionary tale. Where to start...in the 70's we began going to Dominico's, but one day our reservation was screwed up and rather than getting pissy we just ambled across the wharf to Abalonetti. One would usually think that was a terrible restaurant error, but they are owned by the same folks. Back then we had no children...now we are grandparents...hence the cautionary tale. When your child comes home from college and wants to take friends out to dinner, don't forget they have your credit card. Naturally they went to Abalonetti's, having been there so often since they were born. We tried to guess how many times we dined there...120 to 145 times seemed right...not sure. Obviously we are locals. After reading the reviews that fault the restaurant I realize they are all victims of tourist trap. Chowder and fried food...awful no matter where you go. Some folks actually compared the chowder with other restaurants...probably all came from Sysco...frozen. Fresh marinated calamari cannot be confused with imposters. The marinated calamari as an appetizer is awesome...especially the toes. Consider steamed clams appetizer or clams pasta, oysters on the half-shell. The antipasto platter is to die for. Angel hair pasta can be angelic with the right sauce. Don't assume you have to move to the top of their wine list...the "cheap" offerings are local and very good. Seriously...ask your waiter what the locals order...nothing fried. We know they need tourists to survive but having a local following brings them a genuine pride. When you go there tell them you were tipped off by locals that this is the place to be...I'll bet your experience will be just like ours decades ago...and last week. Ask what the locals order and say "nothing touristy." This restaurant this is older than my kids (and grand kids) for a reason...they survive during the off season because of local regulars. 5 stars! They had 34 years of opportunity to screw it up and they didn't take the bait! This is our go-to place above all others in Monterey. PS: If snooty customers are in town we still go to Dominco's to impress...great food and fancy service...but for family and friends, Abalonetti is "home."
(5)Scott D.
We had the fried calamari and shrimp. Fantastic! We were talking to one of the owners about how fresh it was. He asked if we wanted to see why, so to the kitchen we went. The squid is fresh from the bay via the packer to them. Cleaned, battered and into the fryer. Not much fresher than that. No wonder they win awards for it.
(4)Nikki C.
We ended up here the other night, because, of all the the restuarants on the wharf, the kids I nanny for liked this place's kids menu the best. I'd have to say we had a pretty solid dining experience. We all ended up with Shirley Temple's or Roy Rodger's (hey, we were babysitting... Alcohol=no no), and those were tasty. The bread they served was delicious. Really fresh, warm, and amazing. Plus, they give you A LOT. We ate it all pretty quickly, and our waiter offered to bring more. If I weren't with kids, I would have said yes, but I had to be resonsible and make sure they didn't fill up on bread. :) For dinner, I got the dungeness crab pasta, which was served on angel hair pasta, with mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, and crab. It was pretty good, though maybe a bit bland. My boyfriend ordered the halibut, which was a special that night, and he ate it so fast, I barely got a bite. What I did taste was very very good. The kids got fish and chips, and garlic butter fettucine noodles, and they seemed pretty happy with their selections. Overall, a pretty good restaurant on the wharf. Had the dinner been on our dime and not my employer's, we probably would have chosen some appetizers and desserts (they looked awesome!!), and maybe we will, if we choose to come here again!
(4)Kyra R.
Craving some fish and chips, we came across the seafood deli of Abalonetti. If you just want some quick eats on the wharf, this place will do. They got pizza, oysters, fried zuchinini, calamari, fries, and more. Don't be surprised if you spend more then $10 for a meal, that looks like it could be a kids meal from long john silver's, since you are at the wharf. The fish and fries we pretty good (it comes with 3 fish), but they were also $8.95 plus tax. I shared with the hubby, which was basically just an appeteaser. We were gonna go for the calamari, but saw that alone was already $7.95. sooo nevermind...we wanted our clam chowda anyway! Overall this place will satisfy your fried seafood cravings if you don't wanna go in for the fancy restaurants around the way.
(4)Mel G.
This restaurant is located in a great part of town, although there wasn't too much that was memorable about the food. It felt like more of an experience for the atmosphere vs. the dining.
(3)Gerardo C.
It's obviously a seafood place. Order breaded chicken and it was ok.
(2)Anastasia E.
This is the absolute best place for calamari in all of Monterey Bay! They clean their own squid and cook it just right! Everyone is always very pleasant too! I took my son and his friend here the other day and his friend (who is four years old) was begging me for a cherry milkshake. She was disappointed when I told her they didn't have shakes, but the owner went out of his way to make a shake just for her :) It was very sweet. Great food, great service, and overall a great place! I highly recommend it.
(5)Kristen L.
We've been here twice. Both times we were starving. The first time was after a whale watching trip (for some reason, being on a boat all day in the middle of a bay in chilly salt air can leave you feeling very hungry). I wanted lobster and their price was significantly lower than the price elsewhere on the wharf (although they do weigh the whole Maine lobster, not just the tail, so it's kind of hard to really compare). It was good. So, the next time we were in Monterey, five years later, we went back. We walked over from the Aquarium (about a mile and a half) so we were pretty hungry. Again I ordered the lobster. It was good but not as good as I remembered it five years before. It actually seemed like it had been frozen...kind of limp. And I didn't notice it the first time, but the plastic bib they give you smells like gasoline (which makes sense, since plastic is a petroleum product; I do have an annoying good sense of smell). However, the service was very good. I'd caught a glimpse of a lovely-looking Caprese upon arriving, and they let me substitute the regular dinner salad for that, which was pretty impressive. All in all, it was a good experience. I can't even remember if we ordered a dessert. I just know that we were pretty full, and the walk back through Cannery Row to where we'd parked several blocks beyond the Aquarium was pleasant and likely helped us get a good night's sleep! Abalonetti's gets a thumbs-up.

My family has been coming to this restaurant since it started out as a fish market. As kids it was always fun to go in and have everyone know our dad and know exactly what we like to eat. The would tell him to just sit on down and they would start bringing out calamari. They have the best calamari of any place I have ever been. I don't live close enough to go very often but I tell you I still crave the Marty's Special. If you like eggplant parmesan you will like this dish. It has a great balance and the marinara sauce is delicious. I can't find a sauce like that anywhere. You can bring your own bottle of wine if you want and if it happens to be from A Taste of Monterey and one of the other local wineries (I forgot which other) they waive the corkage fee. They also have a few good wines on their wine list as well. I don't think I have had a dish there I don't like. The antipasto plate is wonderful and is great to split with friends before dinner. The caprese salad is divine. I also love the smoked salmon ravioli and crab angel hair pasta. In the dishes you can see the fresh seafood and they don't skimp on the ingredients. The cioppino is delicious as well it is one of my favorite dishes. I also like to get the clam chowder. If you don't know all along the wharf the restaurants all do their own version of clam chowder. Not that I am biased because of my history with Abalonetti's but I love their clam chowder. The serving size is generous and it is the perfect thing for a chilly day. The also have items on the menu for you non seafood eating friends and those are tasty as well. The service is great and I love that the decor is still the same as when I was growing up. It is a warm and cozy setting and the squid in the front is always fun for kids to look at. Also if you locals didn't know they do have a locals menu for lunch and dinner. Whenever anyone I know is going down to Monterey, or they are coming with me I make sure that a stop at Abalonetti's is on the trip itinerary.

Okay, someone needs to teach some manners to the maitre d' if that's who he was. Granted, we walked in midday on a holiday weekend. Fisherman's Wharf was packed, but there were actually open tables in this place. Yet, the host--who approached us looking like he was a customer on his way out--told us curtly it would be a half-hour wait. When we inquired about some open tables we saw, he even more curtly replied they were taken. Yeah, right. He didn't say it with much conviction, which gave us to believe they weren't reserved or promised. He didn't really care how he treated us, because he no doubt thought we were tourists (we're locals), and he'd never see us again so it didn't matter. Well, he's right: He'll never see us in there again, and we have eaten there many, many times before. Food is decent but not spectacular, and no one deserves rude treatment, even a tourist!, so to heck with this place.

Clams and calamari were great. Everyone in our group was happy with their food. Our server was on top of it and very friendly.
(4)Mallorie H.
oh god, i love this place! i have to go here every time i visit Monterey. it *looks* like a nasty tourist trap; just ignore that and get a seat by the window or outside. maybe don't have the silly fruity drinks, as this is clearly not their specialty... i had something made with pineapple juice and Midori, and it was potable, but not actually good. but the calamari!!! this is why i go here. they have the *most tender* calamari i have ever had, and i love squid. i always have the sampler/combination plate, with 3 kinds of calamari, and it is always delicious. likely not a low-fat choice, as two are fried. cannot comment on anything else on the menu, as i always have the squid. service was fine - neither fabulous nor lacking: pleasant, friendly young man who was acceptably attentive.

We were in Monterey and wanted a place to get sand dabs and fell upon Abalonetti's in Restaurant.com . So we gave it a try all of the food was good. Chowder was tasty and light, calamari was great, sand dabs were tasty and my friends pasta looked great. Was a nice dinner.
(4)Teresa J.
One of my goals for 2010 was to eat abalone. I had heard that Abalonetti offered it, but hesitated because I have never had good food at the Wharf. (Honestly, it's an overpriced tourist trap with salty food drowned in rich sauce.) I was completely surprised & delighted with every bit of our meal. My martini was perfect, the calamari appetizer was moist & delicious, the Caprese salad was wonderful, my abalone was dusted in flour and sauteed to perfection, the gentle sauce was light & elegant. I highly recommend Abalonetti's. I will certainly return ;)

Wow! This place amazed me! I'm from Monterey and I usually stay away from eating at most places on the wharf because I know a lot of great places away from there. Like most restaurants on the wharf, there was a person standing outside serving clam chowder. They all claim they are "the best", I beg to differ on Abalonetti's chowder. It's not bad, but definitely not the best. What sold us was the samples of Buffalo Style Calamari, YUMMM =P If you generally love buffalo wings and calamari, it's a match made in heaven! Yeah, I know...that sounds weird, but trust, it is the bomb! Not to mention, we were given a coupon for a free appetizer so we didn't even have to pay for a full serving of Buffalo Style Calamari--score! Anyway, the rest of the menu has other seafood, pasta, and steak choices, but mainly focuses on calamari, calamari cutlets, calamari steaks (just found out that's what abalonetti is). I ordered the Smoked Salmon Ravioli & King Crab Legs, my boyfriend ordered Bouillabaisse and both were delish! The atmosphere is nothing fancy, I wouldn't go there for a romantic date...it's a little more casual. Service was good. The prices are on the higher end, but what can you expect for seafood, and especially, seafood on the wharf. However, the restaurant had drink specials all day long on martinis, mojitos, and long islands...only $2.99 each. So sad that it was my first time eating there after living in Monterey for over 20 years. If they would have sampled their calamari a long time ago, I definitely would have eaten there sooner! Others may disagree with my feelings on Abalonetti, or maybe we just got lucky enough today to have the perfect meal...Either way, we will definitely be returning!

I was very impressed with my meal. I had the crab and angel hair pasta sauteed with mushrooms and tomato's. VERY GOOD! They even made fried prawns for my dad as he isn't much of a seafood eater unless its fried! The clam chowder was to die for and the Patron margarita special - oh so good! It sucks that the only "on the water" seating is outside but we did get a window seat and since not many were outside eating we did get a nice view of the bay. Its a small restaurant with excellent food and excellent service. I would suggest making reservations cuz as soon as happy hour opened (at 3:00) it was packed! I would love to try outside seating but the birds invaded everyone out there so I wouldn't attempt it unless you dont care about birds trying to take your dinner!

Doh! What had been quite a nice restaurant has JUST CHANGED OWNERS. Not nearly as good as it once was. We ordered clam chowder, calamari, caesar salad and fish and Chips. Of all that only the chowder was good, when previously it all would have been good. I'd avoid - not going back . . .

Abalonetti's is a great place to visit. I have been there multiple times and they never fail to impress. The menu has a variety of options from seafood to pizza, to salads and Steaks, which are all delicious. There is also a full bar. The staff is very friendly and professional. The restaurant is always clean. With indoor and outdoor seating you are guaranteed a great view of the bay. When you go, you have to try the Buffalo Calamari, it is the BEST! I guarantee you will not be disappointed with your visit to Abalonetti's.

We were visiting Monterey and Carmel for a long weekend. Took a walk down the wharf and decided on this place for lunch. We figured we would take a chance as the restaurant looked full. Bread was good, I had he fish and chips and my husband ordered the shrimp and chips. Hot and crispy fish, fries were not super hot but were fine. Attentive service. We would return.

This dog found decent seafood and good calamari. Much better than other tourist traps at SF's Fisherman's Wharf.

Great place to eat on the pier. Cool Antipasto bar! Take a look, pick what you want and they'll build a plate for you. Dont miss the Cioppino, and the Marty's Special, a kind of "Calimari Parmesan"...not a lot of breading, TONS of calimari....delish! We never miss this place when we hit the pier in Monterey.

My mom was not impressed with her meal but my dad and i were. i have only been there once and would go again. the view is nice upstairs except when i sunlight blinds you.

This was a wonderful restaurant. After our reservation was lost at The Fish House, I called here and got one (on a summer weekend night) with only 2 hours of notice. I arrived already pissed off because of my Fish House experience, but the host was very kind and although we waited five minutes he gave us a very good table by the window. Then the fun began. We had the "famous" calamari, and a local sand dabs fish special, as well as the chocolate brownie and strawberry cheesecake. The food was very good -- well cooked and not overpowering with spices. The desserts were to die for -- so definitely save room. The waiter was superb, remembering to bring multiple spoons, refilling my iced tea and water without being asked, taking dishes, etc -- all without being intrusive at all. It doesn't seem to be one of the "trendier" places on Fisherman's Wharf, but that means they still care about the customer. The prices were very reasonable -- dinner for 2 for $50 (including desserts, wine), especially when compared to other overpriced Fisherman's Wharf options. We were extremely satisfied with the excellent service and the delicious meal and left as very happy customers.

My husband and I live locally and this is our favorite restaurant. We feel so welcome each time we go and it's great that they have gotten to know us. It makes our experience there even better. Joe is our favorite server, he's the BEST. Food is always excellent. We've never had a bad meal there. Call ahead to reserve a table with a view. Best calamari in town. You won't be disappointed.
(5)Melanie F.
Abalonettis rocks! We had a very pleasant experience there- the food was fantastic and the service impeccable - we mentioned yelp and received the complimentary calamari app- one of the best calamari we've had and that's saying a lot! For dinner hubby had the Alaskan Halibut and I had the Seafood Pasta 9with jumbo shrimp, lobster tenderloins and scallops. Both dishes were spot on. Our server was intuitive and very informative. We used a restaurant.com coupon which saved us big bucks. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for great food & great service.

im a first timer and i had their calamari, Italian sausage pasta and a bowl of their clam chowder. they were all deeeeeeelicious! their calamari was the best ive had so far, buffalo style! yuMmm. the pasta was pretty good, just maybe a little too wet and needed more pasta in it. sausage was good tho. And for their clam chowder, it was good as well.

When I walked into the wharf I turned to the first thing fried and creamy. Good thing my good ol' eating partner stopped me and said WAIT until we get to the end. Well we got to the end i found Abalonetti's. What attracted me was the "best calamari in Monteray!" and I thought it was a joke because everything is the best or award winning. But it was very very good calamari! Fresh and tender, fried to the perfect crisp. I had the Marty's special so there was eggplant and marinara sauce with herbs and spices. Perfecto! And the oysters here were the best oysters with a good price (and was not a specialty oyster bar) Another very good aspect was eating on the water watching all the wildlife poke their heads out of the water. a I'm glad I didn't just run for the first thing I smelled swimming.

Yes! More chowder. I am all chowdered out. But I am glad that I was able to fit this one into my gullet. The hostess is standing out front in the cold and rain pushing her chowder. I ask her if this is "the best chowder on the Wharf." Her answer is so honest that I can't help but want to try it. She says, "everyone has different interpretations of what they consider to be the best chowder. I think our chowder is pretty good, and It's made from one of the oldest recipes." Not a glowing endorsement, just honest feedback about the product. She gives me a shot full of the concoction. I have to wait a few minutes for it to cool off, my tongue is actually still burnt from it. I am instantly impressed. I ask, "is there smoked bacon in there?" The reply: "yes, there's bacon, and a hint of rosemary." I immediately ask to be seated so that I can get more of this stuff. Anything's good if it has a smoky bacon flavor. Add diced potatoes and a creamy texture...pure heaven. I think the place isn't getting more traffic because it is at the end of the pier. I order the cup of chowder and baby shrimp cocktail. One: the chowder is cheaper than that at Old Fisherman's Grotto. In my opinion, the chowder is better, AND they serve it with crunchy french bread! Two: you can not ask for fresher shrimp than those in the shrimp cocktail. The presentation is off with all the carrot strings and cucumber slices, but the cocktail sauce and the shrimp more than make up for it. The restaurant is super clean and the staff is very friendly. My recommendation: walk a little bit farther down the pier and give this place a try!
(4)Lynn S.
The seafood was very fresh. I had the Coconut Shrimp and the hubby had the Shrimp Fettacinni with Bay Shrimp. Both were so yummy and the bread is to die for.
(4)Todd H.
This is the calamari by which I judge all other calamari's - perfectly cooked, perfectly battered and perfectly seasoned.

Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey is touristy and charming, the boardwalk has a carnival-type atmosphere. We chose Abalonetti's because they had a $25 gc from Restaurant.com for $2, and I'm glad we did. They had outside seating overlooking the water, but I was vetoed by my dinner partners, so we sat indoors. I appreciate that the greeter apologized that the window seats were reserved for reservations. We passed on appetizers, but the antipasto bar did look yummy. The bread was hot and crusty and I asked for a refill with dinner. The house specialty is Abalone, and while I was debating between dishes, the waitress suggested an unadvertised special, a sampler of three styles (batter friend, garlic and eggplant parmesan) with saffron rice and mixed veggies for $18. Cooked perfectly and not rubbery. Yummy! Especially the veggies which were crisp and fresh. My daughter had the seafood pasta ( a combination of flash fried seafood over linguine) and soaked up every bit of the juice on the bread it was that good. Her friend (who doesn't like seafood- crazy girl) had the alfredo, which was meh---alfredo. The service was great. She was attentive without being overbearing. I disliked how she added the tip automatically because I was using a gc, but her loss I had mentally calculated $9 more on the bill.

Came here on a weekday with my bf and there wasn't much tourist meaning not a lot of people eating @ the restaurants. So, we both tried their free clam chowder sampler. We both agreed that it's one of the flavorful chowder we've had. Long story short, we ended up having lunch there and got us a free appetizer(calamari) YUM! it was fresh so made it even better. I ordered from their Local's Special(totally recommend it) 3 entrees for less than $15(and i'm not complaining) Highly recomend their Clam Chowder, Calamari Steak and Fish & Chips that my bf had. Aside from the good food, we were seated by the window so the ambiance was nice but a bit bright( we kept our sunglasses on, not to be rude but it was blinding both of us) Free appetizer, good food, nice view but awful service. It seems like every time we go to the Wharf we get bad service. IDK why but it happens all the time. 5 star if the service were nice and plasant but since they can't even serve us with a smile 3 start for you. I will go back in hopes that I will get a better server next time.
(3)Ginger T.
Food is great, service is outstanding. This is a wonderful place to eat, and if you're a local, don't forget about Abalonetti. Wonderful place to eat on the Wharf!
(5)Susie M.
Abalonetti is as good as it gets. We eat there frequently and have never been disappointed. I had one final test, though, and went on Saturday night. Our group was rather large (10, including 2 well behaved toddlers). When I made the reservation And told them we would need 2 high chairs they assured me they could accommodate us, and they did. Start to finish our experience was perfect. Food was superb. They have the best clam chowder, calamari and pasta on the wharf. Service was friendly, helpful and attentive. I won't go anywhere else on the wharf.
(5)Dan S.
Resist the temptation to eat at these places. I have to agree with Angelina. I felt like such a tourist after I ate here. The staff was friendly and attentive. It's just that I suffered a bit of sticker shock after the bill came. I was tempted to try the calamari, but I thought to myself... WHO says the calamari is the greatest? They do. So I decided to pass and got an mediocre plate of linguine and clams. My son had cheese pizza, which was $9 and average at best. My wife did enjoy her salmon. I just felt the overall meal was nothing special and I don't make excuses for an average meal because I am on vacation and trying to make myself believe I didn't overpay for the experience. If the prices were a little cheaper, I would have rated a 3, but I felt a little chumpish after my dinner. I won't go back.
(2)Nick S.
It's no longer on the menu, but you MUST order the Siciliano. Non-fried, sauteed calamari with tons of garlic...mm so tender, so drippy...save some of that bread to soak up the dregs and you just won at life.
(5)Joseph F.
Like all the places here at Fisherman's Wharf, the food was expensive. $3.75 for a small piece of pepperoni pizza. It reminded me of the pizza they serve in elementary school. It is too small to fill you up and it is just cold pizza in saran wrap that they just pop in the microwave for you. The dough was soft and a little goey, but very cheesy though. $2.00 for a 16 oz. Dole orange juice. I was still hungry after spending about $6 here, so I went to the stand across and bought a clam chowder bread bowl.

Located on Fisherman's wharf, this is the second visit. This first was with visiting family and was a disappointment - the lobster was overcooked and tough, the same with the calamari looked and tasted disappointing. FOOD: This second visit was mid-day with one order from the locals menu - meat loaf, mashed potato, and broccoli and one from the regular menu - Sicilian bread salad. This was in addition to the 2.99 Margarita special. The total bill came to 29.87. That said, the food was good this time - we were very pleased with the down home flavor of the meat loaf and the salad was just right. If you're not a local its pretty pricey especially if you're bringing children. But to be fair all the restaurants in this area are expensive. SERVICE: We were warned that the Margaritas were premixed, despite this it took nearly 15 minutes to get one poured by the bartender who had no customers at the bar and a light lunch crowd. It also was some time before we received the locals menu after asking. However, our waiter was pleasant and friendly as was the outside barker who did not pressure us to come in or try the "free" sample of clam chowder. ENVIRONMENT: We chose to sit outdoors on the patio since the inside seemed stuffy and filled with families and noisy children. This was a mistake as there really was no view, there were no umbrellas, the sun was high over head, the cheap vinyl tablecloths sticky and not cleaned well, and the patio itself cracked and stained with gull droppings. ADVICE: Stay indoors, don't order the lobster, stick to the salads, don't bring children.

OH WHAT A NIGHT.......already magical with my love by my side roaming the wharf on a gorgeous Saturday night.....we were determined to treat ourselves to a romantic seafood feast. And, what better time to be on the Monterey Wharf than LOBSTER FEST! Heyo! God i've never seen a hotter looking dude donning a bib in my life! And, what made it perfect - they sat us at a sweetheart table - secluded and at the window looking at the water.
(4)Scott F.
Had lunch there yesterday. Was disappointed with the hamburger and the clam chowder was only average for the wharf. The hamburger was a preformed patty that lacked taste and character. The two stars are for the location and atmosphere.
(2)Lisa M.
My husband and I love Abalonetti, when we visit Monterey we go there as much as possible The Calamari is the best! Can't wait for our next trip.
(5)Andrew Z.
Our simple meal took 25 minutes to serve when the restaurant was half full. The food was decent, but I certainly would not return here.

I am actually reviewing the Fish & Chips Co. that appears to be part of Abalonetti's because this is the name that showed up on my card statement & the Fish & Chips Co. doesn't seem to exist on Yelp or the internet for that matter. I would give them -5 stars if I could. In our group we ordered Fish & Chips, Fried Calamari & Fries, Chicken strips & fries, Fried Prawns & Fries, & Clam Chowder. That's alot of fried food! But then again all they had on the menu was fried food, except for the Clam Chowder. My first hint of how the food was going to be should have been the basket of Fish & Chips that were sitting on the counter that looked like someone had sent them back. Everything was saturated in oil. The coating on the fish was gooey & slimey on the inside, and cooked on the outside, & the fish was still frozen. We sent both orders back, & they refried the same pieces. When they came back, they were the same pieces, twice as greasy. We sent them back again & asked for something different, they gave us Calamari. The Calamari was barely edible. Rubbery & greasy. The Clam Chowder was the only thing that was even the slightest bit OK, and even then, not that good. So in a nutshell, all of their food is extremely greasy, tastes like frozen stuff, and is a rip off. $32 for 3 sodas, 2 Calamaris & 1 chicken. Oh, & the customer service is terrible! The guy was very rude. It's 2 days later, & I can still feel the coating of the oil in my whole digestive system. The worst food I have ever had!! BLEH!!!!

Here's some advice. Go to the deli counter outside to get your calamari and pizza. Inside is overrated. The outside market was always a better experience. This time I was drawn inside by a free appetizer and $2 mojitos. The appetizer was bruschetta and not very good at all. The mojito was the worst I've ever had. It was just a mix, no muddled mint and very little if any alcohol. Just sickening sweetness. I had the Marty's special which is like eggplant Parmesan with calamari on top. Can't complain about that. Pretty good actually. The oysters arrived stabbed and mangled and still not separated from the shell. The steak was huge. Ordered rare but came medium/well done. One more tip. If you use the women's bathroom, use the handicap stall. The only other stall has large gaps that anyone using the sink can see all of your business.
(2)Ginger R.
My favorite place to eat on the wharf. The food and service are consistently good. I love the outdoor, dog-friendly patio overlooking the water. They have a great menu for locals and you can bring wine from Taste of Monterey at no additional corkage. A no-brainer when we want to eat on the wharf.
(4)Jay M.
Parking at the wharf: .75 cents an hour. Calimari and Fries (pretty good) $12.95 Tiramisu (just aight) : $5.95 Coffee: $2.50 Eating linner (lunch/dinner) at the wharf with a great view of the water with the gf: priceless

We just got back from a road trip down to Monterey, and had the pleasure of having lunch at Abalonetti Seafood restaurant.I have never been to the wharf down there and some friends had told us to try their awsome food.Oh boy, were they right! We were seated by a super nice waitress named Delaina. She got us a window table by the water and served us the free calamari appetizer. It was really good.It had a salsa on it that was to die for and was cooked just right. The salsa had a kick to it that was amazing. Then we had the clam chowder,OMG-it was to die for.Served with fresh sourdough bread. We both ordered two kinds of fish.I had the cod fish served over mashed potatoes. It had that great salsa on it! Some spinach underneath and I ate every bit.My boyfriend had the salmon with a tomato sause on it.It was a generous portion and was served with saffron rice and vegis. He said it was cooked perfect. Then we topped it off with a cannoli for me and some chocolate cake for him!! I can't wait to go back again.Thank you Abalonetti for making our road trip so yummy!
(5)Faye F.
I've been here before and realized I forgot to write a review about it. Anyway, came here recently to sample their chowder and made me realize that their best dish here is their fried calamari!! Heapings of calamari piled on a plate and fat chunks of amazing goodness inside their chowder. There's indoor and outdoor seating, which is great when the weather in Monterey is perfect.
(4)Ginny K.
We were in search of cioppino for lunch on a Sunday and wanted to try someplace new. We've been to several places on the wharf before, but never this one. The interior is more rustic than upscale, since there are mirrors on the wall we both had a great view and it wasn't crowded. The menu outside emphasized calamari, apparently that is the specialty here, but they serve cioppino so we gave it a try. My friend wanted oysters so we ordered 6 oysters and a half plate of antipasto. Score!! He actually enjoyed the antipasto too - the carnivore ate vegetables and liked them - yay!! The half plate included artichoke hearts, eggplant, olives, a hunk of feta cheese, and cold marinated calimari. It was all excellent!! The cioppino came so we strapped on the bibs and went to town. Except for the crab legs, it was more of a "lazy man's cioppino" - would have been nice if it said that on the menu. The tomato sauce was slightly on the sweet side but the seafood was all fresh and piled on. Crab, clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops and calimari. Yum! I couldn't finish, so brought some leftovers home and enjoyed them for a light dinner. While we were having our leisurely meal, a few tables of people came and went around us and we noticed pretty much everyone was ordering the fish and chips so we asked the waiter about it. He said it's the most popular dish, local rock cod lightly battered and fried. It looked great, but I'd have a hard time passing up cioppino for fish and chips! I lazily ordered a glass of pinot noir - it was so-so and priced accordingly. The prices are pretty good here, $16.95 for the cioppino is a steal. Along with the unexpectedly excellent antipasto, this turned out to be a very enjoyable meal. I'd go back in a minute!!

It's on the Fisherman's Wharf pier - tourist central. But it is still quite worth visiting. Particularly for the calamari steak and eggplant covered with marinara sauce. Simply delicious. I think that they call it Marty's Special or something. I always make a point of stopping in whenever I am in the area. And nice views too. Oh, and a customer at a nearby table was throwing a major fit and making a scene about the lobsters that he and his lady had ordered (and eaten in their entirety!). The waitress and manager dealt with him in a very professional manner and never appeared flustered. I think that they even comped him on the two lobsters that they had eaten. I'll have to try that next time too.... just kidding! But it's very pleasant and when my mom visits from back east, this is always first on her list of places to eat. Update 10/11/07: Former owner John Pisto has sold to owner of Gilbert's (John Gilbert, I believe). New owner intends to remodel outside dining. Menu and staff staying the same. Food still about the same as I remember. Marty's Special (calamari w/ egglant) good and so is cioppino. Still 4 stars.
(4)A P.
I recommend the roasted garlic with crouton's. The salad was good, although not terribly unique. The calamari abalonetti was world class. I had a beer, but it looked like they had quite a few California whites. There is something there for the kids. The wait staff are pros, but you come to expect it at the good places in Monterey. The wharf is a wonderful tourist trap and you pay that 15% markup here. There is more here then decent chowder and fish fry (although they have that as well). I want to see more organics interesting veg and fresh herbs. My knock here is the room, it has old school wharf charm, but a little long in the tooth. Glassware and stemware also need some work. - Good lunch, I am going back.
(4)A Z.
We were told we would get a free appetizer if we came back after our boat trip.......never got it! Was looking forward to the calamari! Bummer. The anitipasto was excellent. The crab sandwich too much onion and tomato not enough crab. The albalone sandwich too much onion and tomato not enough albalone. Over all got a lot of bread and french fries! Granted our waitress was very very nice....she gets a five star!
(2)Lupe M.
Great place to have seafood in Monterey! Restaurant is located right on Fisherman's Wharf. Though nautical looking from the outside -- very contemporary inside. We had a window table with a spectacular view of the wharf, bay, and walking trails. The menu has many foods to choose from -- seafood, pizzas, pastas, and calamari prepared in one of many different ways. We definitely enjoyed our meals -- fish & chips, seafood combination, and prawns & chips. All well cooked and very tasteful! And service was good and attentive.

Can't beat the price of the *Local Special* they serve for $8.95 (or so)...it includes a free AMAZING Calamari appetizer as well as a salad or soup, an entree, and a dessert... so much food we couldn't finish it all. Once we had the regular calamari which had great seasoning! and tonight we had the even better Salsa type one ( can't remember what it was called but it was OUT of this world good! - it had some chopped up jalapenos in it! which is GREAT for those of us who like a little HEAT in our food)... and I heard they even have *Buffalo Calamari* (we will try next time). The place was spotless and the service was spot on, the bartender lady was friendly and lively, and very informative about the restaurant's history - the freshly baked HOT bread was FANTASTIC (somehow, if the bread isn't great, the meal suffers...so THANK YOU for some GREAT BREAD!). When our food came it was DELICIOUS! I always get a chicken dish - and the Parmesan Chicken was 5 star! My husband always gets fish so both times we went he RAVED about how fresh the fish was and that it was PERFECTLY COOKED!!! So I give the fish a 5 star too. I tried the Mango Margarita which is now a favorite of mine ($3.00) and my husband's glass of Chardonnay was only $3.00... you just can't beat the prices for that quality of food. The waiters were extremely friendly, in fact ALL the staff were smiling and friendly - made us feel like family. WE WILL BE BACK towing our Monterey house guests and family with us. Our waiter even suggested that we go to Restaurant.com and get a coupon to use there for our next visit. Can't get better than that!

you know, i wish someone would have a review that compared all of the places at fisherman's wharf in monterey. maybe someone does but i just dont know about it. Abalonetti is a decent place to eat if it's cold out. I'm just going to hammer out some of my personal impressions rather than what i feel might be helpful to a general reading population. Relatively clean: i think you can tell the quality of food by how the place is run, and you can tell by how clean they keep the place. and you can tell the ultimate cleanliness by using the restrooms. However, there were some flies in the back room (with the mirror walls) where we were sitting. But you know, half the store front is open, so I guess it's relatively un-preventable Food is approx $10-13ish if I remember correctly. They have sandwiches as well as your standard fisherman's wharf foods. We were not impressed with the fish&chips. The fish was deep friend to the point it was really hard. You can get stuff for up to $20, but not incredibly awesome, but still enjoyable. I'd say it'd be tough to keep coming to the same restaurant like this every time I visit. not because it was bad or anything. there are just so many clam chowder places on the wharf - and none of them have ever really stuck out from the rest in quality. the guy who advertises "taste the difference!" is only telling half the story.
(3)Ray G.
Three course meal with an appetizers for two....only $30 with my military and local discount. It was awesome....and the views are great.
(5)Lynn Ellen M.
if I'm in Monterey for more than a few hours, you'll find me having a meal at this restaurant. I've even eaten in their take-out casual area when the dining room was too full and the wait was too long. very nice view of the bay, I haven't had anything I didn't like. Yum!
(5)Nancy F.
we were walking down the pier and since we had too many clam chowder samples, we weren't sure which restaurant to go into. my bf wanted one that had a patio outside... so we went in. instead we sat by the window inside. it was hot, so i was kind of relieved. the service is great here. a little too attentive, but good enough. i had the white wine clams (appetizer) but as my main and a bowl of clam chowder. both were very good. my bf had a stuffed calamari (with pasta, cheese and sausages). this was weird. it was a whole calamari, so it wasn't cooked as tender as rings. and still had that sea smell. they're famous for their calamari so i'm not sure what went wrong here. nonetheless, we'd still come back here! prices were very reasonable too!
(4)Joseph W.
great specials and the people are awesome, but the food is just ok.
(3)Rebecca R.
Very cool casual but nice atmosphere. Had a window table with and awesome view. The bread was delicious (warm, crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside); and our basket was re-filled when we ran out. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. I had the fish and chips and my husband had the oysters as a starter and the calamari and marinara pasta. All of it was very tasty. We could tell that it was a mix of tourists like us and locals and that is a good sign to me. Overall a very good experience.
(4)Lisa L.
My husband and I ate at Abalonetti last night at the advise of Chef Wolf from Wine from the Heart. We were very disappointed! My husband had the Halibut special and the fish was very thin and overcooked. His potatoes were luke warm to cold. Our waitress Lindsey was ok but we had to ask what the specials were. I had the Calamari Abalonetti and that was ok. I wish we would have stuck with our original plan to eat at the Fisherman's Grotto or Fish Hopper which is our favorite and has been for many years. The Oysters in the half shell were good, However I must say, I will never eat at Abalonetti again. Lisa in Hollister.

You think that in the middle of winter a group of locals would get better treatment on the dead and desolate wharf. We said we would have about 20 and came with about 15 people. We were orginally at 3 tables; but then they corraled us into 2 of them when they got upset that 5 people didn't show up. They needed the seats. The ONLY other people that came in that night was a group of 4 Japanese tourists. They shoudl have been lucky they got anyone.
(1)Dave S.
I came in on a Thursday in the early lunch hours. Nice open place. The view is cool. The staff was nice to me. I ordered a chicken sandwich which was just ok. I really like the salad that I requested instead of the fries, and the $2.99 margaritas was a good trade. A bit pricey for an ok sandwich. Maybe I need to try a different item. All in all, I would maybe give it a better rating if I find something to draw my attention next time around. There are so many food places on the wharf, but the fact that I could get a less expensive drink there is really what made me try it. To be continued..........

First time here & really enjoyed the food! So, why the 4 stars instead of 5? First, we went to celebrate a birthday. I Made the reservation a week in advance & we were promised a window table but didn't get a table right on the window. Instead,we were sat next to a couple that had the window view. Secondly, the establishment is quite noisy inside & gets louder as it fills up. Our waiters name was Joe whom provided awesome service. The sand dabs were phenomenal as their shrimp scampi pasta. The desserts were awesome! A big plus was their $2.99 margarita specials. Can't beat that! We'll be back soon.

Although John Pisto doesn't own this anymore I became a fan of any of his restaurants which I have tried over the years traveling to monterey. For the first time they offered a combo of a surf and turf of a grilled sirloin steak with a panko crusted abalone. They are experimenting with other combos and all I can say is bring it on baby!!!

Took my family of six and we had a great time. The calamari and clam chowder were great. All of the entrees were good from the dungeness crab special to the meat loaf. Our server, an extremely pleasant young, blond woman, was right on top of everything and helped make the meal special.

Ok food. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't impressive either. The calamari was good. They did have good beer. They do have a great patio that you can sit at. They keep you filled up with bread and drink refills. I guess I might go back for a drink out on their patio. All in all it wasn't bad, but it was kind of blah and forgetable.

We dined here with yelp recommendation and a coupon we got from another website. The food was much better than I thought. Cioppino was not overcooked with a right amount of marinara sauce. The server treated us with fried calamari that was one of the best I had in a long time. The coating wasn't too thick to overpower calamari, not overcooked, and full of flavor. The seafood platter was also cooked just right with light batter and cooked to perfection. Their famous calamari steak was delicious. A small disappointment with angel hair pasta, good flavor but pasta was overcooked. Ravioli was amazing and the service, even better! We would come here again.

This place is definitely overpriced but the food is good. The service however, is not. It takes FOREVER and I mean forever, for the food to come out. A good 35-45 minute wait. My bf and I ordered the clam chowder sourdough bread bowl (a whopping $10- perhaps I'm used to San Francisco pricing on clam chowders and this just seemed a little too much since the bread bowl came out with a relatively small portion of clam chowder in it), deep fried calamari (this was actually our favorite since the calamari was fresh and and the two sauces it came with was delicious) and the abalone dish, which they sell here at "market price" which turned out to be $18 that day for such a small portion of abalone! I have to say, I was tricked by the sign outside this shop advertising $2.99 margaritas so that was what lured me in here in the first place. I enjoyed the experience but am definitely not coming back. There's nothing here that stood out in my mind that I can't get somewhere else for a more decent price.

The best food on the wharf in Monterey. I lived in Monterey / Salinas for 17 years, ate at every place on the wharf many times. This is the only place on the Monterey wharf that I'd return now that I live in the SF bay area.

delish delish delish. the fried calamari was perfect and im super picky how it's done. the meat was so tender and the batter was done just right! We also ordered the oysters on the half shell. Yummy. It tasted very fresh. My husband ordered the clam chowder in the bread bowl. It was prefect. Not too thick and not runny and not too salty. Just right. Plenty of bits of clam as well. I ordered the Caprese salad w/o anchovies. I didnt care too much for it, since it was just two halfs of tomato with motzerella ontop, garnished with sliced black olives and approx. 3 small peices of lettuce. Crab cakes here are delish too. PS. the oysteres werent shucked!!!!!! im glad i checked!

Had a restaurant.com coupon to try out the place. It was yummy. Fried calamari was good but nothing special. Seafood pasta was more seafood than pasta in a good sauce. Crab ravioli with prawns was ok. The prawns were delicious but ravioli was average. Bouillabaisse was ok. Broiled dungeness crab was good. All the dishes were good size and they were not stingy with the seafood. Bread was good too. We also had the chocolate souflee- also yummy! Service was excellent. Definitely would come back and recommend to others. The coupon is great.

I had the fish and chips here. Fairly decent fried batter cod and normal fries. Not the best fish and chips I've had in my life, but pretty good and it was definitely filling for me (had to share one of the three pieces). For desert, I had their chocolate praline cake slice with a decaf coffee; I was able to split the cake generously with the two other people in my party. The maitre d' , or maybe the owner, noticed that I was cold enough to put my jacket back on, and so he turned up the heater so I could be comfortable... that was nice! The view is nice, overlooking the outside edge of the wharf. I would come here again if I wanted fish and chips and was in the area.

Dropped by during the week; early in the evening for tthe "Earlybird Special". I don't know if it's offered regularly, but it was very enjoyable! I sat on the deck, very nice. Ordered the salmon dinner with house sides of spinach and new potatoes. Nice size piece of fish, cooked expertly. The spinach was terrific, very buttery and flavorful. The new potatoes were slightly undercooked, but had great seasoning. The service was excellent; polite, friendly, and attentive, even though I was only a party of one. I will both recommend and return to this restaurant.
(4)Angelina J.
I felt like a complete tourist eating here. The shitty atmosphere isn't helped by the mediocre food. But I still recommend it to anyone visiting the area in need of a tourist seafood dinner. The calamari was good but the rest of our meal was just so-so. It's also priced accordingly, for a tourist.
(4)Elizabeth B.
Took my Sacramento cousin here for lunch. I am fan of this place and come in regularly. I have never known Abalonetti to be other than friendly, welcoming and accommodating. The wait staff is very well trained and knowledgeable. Always. Even when we've ordered from the "Locals Only" dinner menu (cheap fare certain weeknights) we are served without the usual grimace of the waiter knowing he/she may not get the usual tip that a higher priced meal would command. Sometimes we leave an even larger tip anyway if we have been served with graciousness and consideration. My cousin had the Abalonetti Calamari on the lunch menu ($13.95) and said it was delicious. I had the Shrimp Louie ($14.95) and it was absolutely abbundanza! The other places that serve a shrimp or crab Louie give you a whole plate full of iceberg lettuce and about a scant half cup serving of seafood. This Louie at Abalonetti was an oval platter heaped with baby greens surrounded by a quartered perfectly hard boiled egg, 4 lemon wedges and some beautifully thin-sliced ripe red tomatoes and crispy cucumbers. The shrimp was an abundant serving as well, at least 1 to 1-1/2 cups of very fresh very tender whole cooked shrimp. Light and tasty version Thousand Island dressing served on the side. French bread (hot and fresh) and fresh butter came in a refillable basket. Nobody pressured us on dessert and the waiter knew the entire listing of daily specials by heart. Long live Abalonetti, not only courtesy greets each customer, but they are nice even if it's just the lookie-loos trying to use the restroom or see inside The atmosphere is consistently clean and pleasant each and every time. Simply honest quality counts.

took my brother in law here when he was on vacation a couple of weeks ago. it's nestled in between lots of similar restaurants. a guy was outside the restaurant handing out samples and i happened to like their calamari, so we chose this place. there's lots of seating inside, and a couple of tables on the deck outside, where you can see a nice big chunk of monterey bay. i ordered their seafood platter which had shrimp, calamari, fried oysters, and spicy breaded mussels. i swear, it's the freshest seafood i've ever tasted. it was like someone went out deep sea diving to catch the seafood to cook for us. they have a large selection of beers and spirits at the bar, and they told me that on weekends, they have a live band there. definitely have to find my way back here.
(5)Lorinda F.
The garlic calamari was an amazing thing. Just Glorious. Unfortunately we assumed their specials for the day meant that it was fresh. NOT the case. Mom got lobster. Not only had it been frozen, but the claws were not even cooked, they were still limp. Calamari a 5. Lobster a 1. Ask before you assume the specials are fresh.
(3)Liz C.
Of the places on the wharf in Monterey, this is the only one I go to. Great calamari (various ways to prepare it help), and good service, Sometimes a wait for a table, but we sit at bar if need be, you can have full dinner there. Enjoy it every time I go. Local's nights ($10 meals, good choices) on Wed/Thurs eves (with free parking in lot) last time I checked. And they usually have a to-die-for lemon tart on the desert tray offerings.
(4)Kim T.
Clam Chowder in a bread bowl was the best I have ever had.
(5)Debby D.
located in a tourist spot but i like eating my clam chowder bowl here. It has tables and i just wanna eat inside without spending a lot of money haha
(4)Jess M.
Came here for lunch. The wharf's restaurants were hard to choose from so I picked from yelp reviews. The view was wonderful. I had Sicilian bread salad and it was amazing. Homemade croutons, lots of veggies, artichoke hearts, and a great vinaigrette. Clam chowder was decent, but my favorite part of the meal was the salad. Great value too.
(4)Nick C.
Friendly staff , good food and the best Calamari on the wharf.
(4)Debbie W.
Came here as a child so we made reservations, but the guy outside serving samples of HOT clam chowder gave us a coupon for free appetizer too! Since we had a large party, they actually gave us two dishes of free apps. the calamari was ok. The big hit was the chowder and their fresh sourdough bread which they serve only hot outta the oven. I had the sourdough bowl with clam chowder but was disappointed that the bread was not the same, it was stale and older, so I just used the other fresh bread to dip. We were full for hours after that so it must have been the fried stuff we ate...I heard the fish and chips were a little greasy. Anyways, service was exceptional and the ambience was really nice and clean too. Perfect lunch on the wharf!
(5)Christi P.
We did not eat here stopped in for one drink, it might have been more but overall experience ensured that it was just one. It was our first time to the Wharf- every restaurant was hawking clam chowder and $3 drinks. For whatever reason this place was at the end of the road so to speak. The bartender was not friendly... at all. We were lucky she could be bothered with us at all. When I ordered the $3 Mango Margie- she said- you know its a mix? With a tone like YOU ARE ORDERING A SUCKY DRINK. The Mr tried to engage in conversation, it went no where. Paid for our drinks and left to go to Crabby Jim's at the beginning of the wharf- much nicer people and didn't make you feel bad that you ordered the $3 drinks.
(1)Amy W.
This place is amazing. I have been coming her for 15 years. The fish is the best on the peninsula. Get the fresh fish every time and you can't go wrong. When halibut is in season, get it blackened here. Stewart is the best, nicest bartender. On a nice day, its great to come in there and sit by the water. I won't ever stop coming here.
(5)Therese S.
On our first night in Monterey, we went here. They never disappoint. I've been going there since 1992. We made reservations for a party of five. We had many cocktails, appetizers, and entries. We did close down the restaurant. All the food is great. This is our tradition. We came winter, 12/27/12, dinner time. The highlights: raw fresh oysters, calamari, chopino, two Marty specials, clam chowder soup, and dessert.
(4)Aileen M.
Three stars because our waitress was superb and the oysters tasty. The lobster wasn't edible - sent it back twice. The sauce on the crab ravioli was good - but the pasta itself was straight from the shelves of TJ's. To be fair, the antipasto was very good and the other members of our party enjoyed their meals.
(3)Del F.
If I could rate this place with a negative star, I would! I decided to take my family here for my birthday and I should of though of another place to go! Our waitress sucked, people with larger parties that were seated after us, we're served and to top it off, 5 tables were served and left while we were still waiting for our food! I ordered the seafood pasta and requested no shell fish with extra calamari. I found a muscle in my dish and 3 pieces of calamari. What made even worse was I had a friend who showed up late, order his dish last and he ended up receiving his food first while we all were still waiting for our food!!!!! This place is the worse!!!!
(1)c b.
Very disappointed. The food arrived cold, calamari was not crispy and not warm, must of sat around for a while. Soup also came cold, a horrible experience. Also ordered pizza , yuck. This use to be a good restaurant, will not be going back.
(1)Will Y.
Should have known. $8.95 for 2 very small pieces of fish. Frozen van De camp's fish. Very disappointed.
(1)Sangee D.
Good food, good servers, and my pooch gets a warm welcome. What's not to love.
(4)Ellen M.
This is my absolute favorite restaurant. The food is wonderful (try the calamari, sand dabs, swordfish or the rockfish. Or Marti's Special -- like eggplant parmesan but with calamari). The wine list is okay -- ask to discover what wine is worth drinking. We always take out-of-towners here as the ambience really gives them a sense of old Monterey. The Wharf itself is a bit touristy so skip by the shops on your way to the restaurant. The absolute jewel of the restaurant and the reason we keep coming back, year after year, is because of the server, Joe. He makes every dish sound so delicious -- his menu descriptions make my mouth water and I want to order everything he describes. He could run a school for training servers how to turn the job of serving food into an art form. Stuart is also wonderful -- gracious, and always pleasant. And the bartender, Marina, is a gem. I hope the restaurant management understands what true gems they have. We drive from Aptos all the time to have dinner at Abalonetti's and have told tons of friends and family to frequent this restaurant. No one has ever been disappointed. It is seriously good. Give yourself a treat and try it.
(5)Erin H.
Seafood and Italian, my two favorites. But not so much on this one. Had the barbecued calamari dish and it was very lifeless. Even if I used my lemon wedge drizzled (actually, drenched) some lemon juice all over the calamari to kick it up a notch, still got nada. The calamari was pretty tough also, like I was chewing on rubber bands. I don't think my family didn't enjoy their dishes that much either. For their prices, I expected a lot, but failed to meet its end.
(2)Kris M.
I honestly was unimpressed here. My mom and I came on New Years Eve and got seats relatively quickly in a good place (though, sadly, not water-side). My mom had their special, which was the stuffed salmon (with crab, artichoke, bay shrimp, and covered in hollandaise). Her food was amazing, even great potatoes and spinach. Mine, well.... not so much. I ordered the Seafood Combination, which sounded really good - shrimp, scallops, calamari and Pacific oysters, all fried. OK, sure. What I got looked like a kids meal. Red and white checked paper covered with fries, and a few small pieces of fried somethings on the side of the plate - two small pieces of each. I could tell, roughly, what each thing was more or less - they were gone in two bites each, and the oysters seemed darker than I'd seen before. Nothing tasted very fresh. I was pretty disgusted with the plate - and they have the audacity to charge $18 for that! It was barely an appetizer, let alone the entree the menu said it would be. I guess this is a case of buyer beware, and things sounding better than they actually are. Again, my mom's food was pretty amazing, so clearly they can make good food. But I think I'd prefer to go to a restaurant on the pier that has more consistency across their menu, and it's not like we don't have our choice.

Not a good experience. Bar was dirty. Poor service

My roomie and I went down to Monterey for the Labor Day weekend and came to Abalonettis TWO days in a row! The all day happy hour margaritas and 99 cent oysters are where it is at! Now I was dubious going in about the oysters going in since they were so cheap but they were SO yummy! Their shucker lacks some skills, so there were shell bits, but nothing I couldn't handle. All in all very yummy. The happy hour margaritas were yummy and surprisingly strong given how inexpensive they were. And friendly service! Since this restaurant is farther down on the pier, it's not nearly as crowded, particularly when it comes to the small ones (i.e. kids). The few kids that were there were very well behaved. While I was there there was also a local woman dining who was clearly a regular. Everyone (from manager to bus boys) came over to say hi to her. I absolutely love the small town community feel to this place. I didn't have anything else on the menu, so I can't speak to the rest of their menu or cocktails. But if you're looking for a great place to stop for margaritas and oysters, this is the place to stop!

While at the dog park I spied a flyer for the new dog-friendly patio at Abalonetti's. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here 17 years ago and always seem to forget about Fisherman's Wharf when we visit. Since we had our pooch, we headed on down. The host was super friendly and seated us on the patio and they IMMEDIATELY brought Darwin a bowl of water. That was before we even got water ;o) I'm always a fan of people/places that treat pets with care, you can tell a lot about how service will be for you when your four-legged family member is treated well. The staff was attentive, courteous, friendly and the food was delicious, as always. Definitely a great place to stop for clam chowder with the family including your quadruped family members :)
(4)C Y.
Of all the restaurants competing for the tourist business along the wharf, Abalonetti appeared a bit more reserved and had outdoor seating on a sunny afternoon. They had a come on price of $2.95 beers which we found out was for a 11 oz glass. We did have a very enjoyable lunch here. 99 cent oysters on the half shell were better than expected. Appetizer platter was generous in portions and pretty good. Servers were attentive and friendly. If I were to eat on the wharf again, I'd come back.
(3)Priscilla S.
Took my honey here on his birthday. Small restaurant with a full bar. We sat by the window-- great view of the water. We had the cesar salad and a half dozen oysters to start Oysters were fresh and the ceasar was huge with fresh anchovies! great for sharing. We should've known the portions would be huge based on the salad alone, we ordered the italian sausage pasta and a seafood dish recommended by our server Joe. Italian sausage pasta was cooked in a fresh marinara sauce. The seafood dish was cooked in a delicious white wine sauce in angel hair pasta with jumbo prawns, lobster, and scallops. Joe was an awesome server! He treated my honey to a creme brulee with a candle for his birthday! So sweet! I recommend this restaurant and our server Joe!
(4)gwynnie p.
The nice thing about Abalonetti is that you can sit outside, not an option at a lot of the other restaurants on the wharf here. I had a very nice salad on a recent visit, a caprese with the added bonus of anchovies. mmmmmmm anchovies. The only problem with it was the tomatoes were rock hard and not garden-fresh types. Which I think they should have been since it was Sept. 3. The service was kind and generous with the diet coke refills.
(3)Kyle R.
I went in there with my wife and two children and requested a high chair from the hostess for one of them. After not seeing a server for 10 minutes another family comes in and requests a high chair. The hostess brings it over as she seats them. When I ask where the high chair I requested is she said that was the last one. My wife starts to lose her mind at this point and we were about to leave when our server finally appears carrying a high chair like he was King Arthur holding up Excalibur. Okay, fine. We'll give it a shot. The service was okay after that point, mostly because it was difficult to ignore people who just called you out on ignoring them. The food was good. The prices were a bit touristy. The experience may have been better if it had gotten off on better footing.
(3)Renee B.
Went here for our anniversary dinner last night and had an absolutely amazing experience. The food was incredibly delicious. I had the Monterey Scampi and my husband had the cioppino. Food was fresh and very tasty. The service was OUTSTANDING. They treat you like you are family and make you feel very special. Beautiful views of the water and yummy creme brûlée were the icing on the cake. Thanks to Joe and Riley for a memorable dinner. This will become a regular stop for us every time we are in the area.
(5)Pat D.
This place has gone down down down hill hill hill. Last couple of times we were there - blech. Food, prices, all bad. Two stars because the quick fried calamari still rates.
(2)Momo K.
wow, best meal so far in the whole cali trip. we had 18 oysters, 3 beers, 2 crabs, and 1 seafood pasta. came out all full and paid 106 including tips! the crab was so meaty and delicious. the oysters was so fresh and had a natural sweetness to it. the resturant ambiance was great and it is a very beautiful resturant. don't know why the reviews on yelp isn't as good as grotto. we checked out other establishments and their crab was at least 10 bucks more and grotto had a sign out to not allow kids in the dining room b/c they are loud and distracting. seriously, check out their sign right below the menu.
(5)Judy H.
One might assume that all restaurants on the wharf are tourist traps. However, this place has awesome calamari steak (tender and juicy) and antipasto. Everything here is super fresh. Plus, the staff members are always courteous and patient. You won't be disappointed if you love seafood!
(4)Belle V.
My favorite spot on the wharf ;) can't go wrong with Italian + seafood
(5)Steve K.
5 Stars for the Calamari BUFFALO Style! Apparently it's the only place on the west coast that serves this east coast style. And it is GOOOOOD. Abalonetti's is famous for it's calamari and now I know why. The service is excellent and the seafood is good. The only downside is, because it is touristy, the prices are a bit high for what you get.
(5)Yamona M.
This was a solid four star lunch for me - lots of happiness... The inside of the restaurant isn't dated as some of the Wharf places can be - or at least I remember them being. It's been about ten years since I ate at the Wharf. This isn't snobbery, just that I work across from the Wharf now and I haven't worked in the area for a long time. The inside of the restaurant makes you feel like you're underwater. I think that is blue tinted glass on the sky lights - nice lofted ceilings and everything is really clean. We started with the calamari - I didn't know this but they are the only place on the Wharf that actually process their own calamari. Apparently, when the calamari gets caught at the Wharf - it goes to China to get packaged and then comes back. The calamari here is so light and fluffy. I am not a fan really but this was so good. Lunch specials are $8.95!!! Yep - 100% true. I ordered the Parmesan Chicken which came with veggies and rice - I skipped the rice. Nice piece of tender chicken with a super panko parmesan crust. There's a little relish which is done bruschetta style and some nice veggies - not overcooked. The Boss had Sanddabs - those were really mild, nicely cooked and he seemed to enjoy them. I will definitely be back.
(4)David L.
Our fish was fresh. So was the garlic that laced almost everything else. The veggies seemed canned. The entire meal was reminiscent of cafeteria food. While this was not bad, I left thinking we could have done SO much better. Next time we will, as this will have been our last meal here.
(2)Crystal J.
Not too big of a seafood fan but we went here for a business luncheon. I had the meatloaf which was WONDFERFUL. Everyone else RAVED about Marty's Special and I even tried a bit of fried calamari, YUM! Cant wait to go back, maybe I will even eat seafood!
(4)Amanda B.
I got food poisoning. I could just leave it at that, and call it a day, but I think this review deserves a bit more than that four-word sentence above. One lovely sunny Sunday, at lunch time, my friends and I were looking for a place to sit and have some good seafood. My friend was enticed by this place since they were offering $2.99 happy hour margaritas and beer. Our host was very friendly, and our waitress was attentive and friendly as well. We also received a voucher for a free appetizer. We ordered the crab cakes and garlic calamari. I'm glad we had the voucher because the appetizers were mediocre. The crab cakes were mushy, barely cooked. The calamari was tolerable only because they loaded a ton of garlic on top. It was very obvious that the two appetizers weren't exactly fresh, and seemed as though they had been sitting under heating lamps waiting for the next consumer. The happy hour margaritas tasted like mostly simple syrup, and were too nasty to even finish. I had ordered the clam chowder, which wasn't bad at all, but wasn't award winning either. One of my friends ordered a platter of oysters. Yes, the oysters were large, but only because they were very mature. Barnacles had grown on the outsides of them, and were not at all very appetizing. I had ONE oyster from my friend's platter, just try it. Well, I regret my curiosity to try just one, because I chose the BAD one. Several hours later, I embarrassingly embarked on the ever-so-fun voyage of food poisoning. And if anyone has ever had food poisoning (especially from seafood!), you can imagine how I was feeling later that day. I regret to say, I will never venture to this restaurant again, and I will not be recommending it to anyone else either.
(1)Joni S.
Pros: Largest pet-friendly patio on the wharf. They do specials on fresh oysters. Cons: Not very clean outside. Inspect your glasses and silverware, they don't clean up very well. Tip: Restaurant.com participant.

I've eaten here each time I've come out to Monterey literally for decades; since I was a youth. Their calamari is consistently good/excellent and I don't come here to have anything else on their menu. This time we had lunch out on their patio (which used to have barking seals basking on a pontoon but they've since moved it). The service was prompt and friendly like it always has been. We were started by some warm fresh-made crusty bread that had a perfectly crisped flowered crust surrounding a slightly chewy white interior. Served with the obligatory foil-wrapped butter, it was a great start. This was followed by two cups of Clam Chowder (New England Style) which for $4.50 each was good but not generous and probably worth $2.00 a serving. The main dishes consisted of one of my favorites and one I'd not had before. The first (and my fav) was Marty's Special ($15) which is their wonderful crisped and curled breaded calamari cutlets served over eggplant under a rich fresh tomato marinara sauce. Mozzarella cheese is broiled over the cutlets before the sauce is added so it is not simply melted and stringy; more like the cheese toppings of great pizza. The other dish was their Stuffed Calamari ($15) which I'd never had before but which was calamari tubes stuffed with ground sausage, pine nuts and something other. It was served over linguine and although the calamari was a pallid white was pretty decent, though not my favorite of their dishes. With tax this was about $43--a bit steep for lunch for two. But this was also on their premium end of their lunch menu, so lunch could be had for less. But across all the years, their calamari dishes have been consistently good to excellent, so if you are in the Old Pier in Monterey, give Abalonetti's a try. Oh: and in case you're wondering, the name relates to how abalone was pounded to make a tender seafood steak. It was my impression that this was how they keep the calamari so tender here.

Best place in Moneterey! We went in here on a whim to grab a beer and sat at the bar. Our bartender was a fantastic woman named Araceli. We sat there for 2 hours (would have stayed longer if we could have) and she gave us the perfect amount of attention. Never intrusive, but always making sure we were happy and had full beers. Though we didn't plan on eating there, we got oysters (a new experience for us) and fried calamari (have had this many, many times). Their seafood was fresh and amazingly prepared. And the price of the food was well worth the quality. Araceli also knew a lot about the local history and directed us to some great camp grounds and fresh seafood markets. We spent a week vacationing up and down the Cali coast and this was our favorite place, mostly because of the awesome bartender. Which it was closer to Las Vegas...

A day at the Monterey Aquarium and we were hungry for some seafood and a drink. We wandered down to Fisherman's Wharf where we found Abalonetti's Seafood. We asked for a seat by the window and we got our wish. Our lovely waitress Delaine promptly got us started on cocktails. I remembered from a previous visit that they made a nice bloody mary and they didn't dissappoint. We decided to order all appetizers so we could try more things. Calamari-Buffalo Style-basically calamari with wing sauce. I enjoyed it very much. The bf thought the sauce took away from the crunchiness of the calamari. Crab Cocktail- straightforward, I thought it was a bit pricier than the other items Garlic Pesto Oysters- very very nice, I wished the order was for 6 instead of only 4. Maybe order 2 orders next time. Fried Sardines- now this was the most attractive looking of all the dishes. They layered the fishes and served them with a nice marinera sauce and permesan cheese. I really liked it. BF thought there were too many bones but that's just the nature of the fish. The bones were very small so you could swallow them, but some may have a problem with the texture. They have a huge outdoor dining area that you can take advantage of on a sunny day. Abalonetti's is a must if you are down in Monterey.
(5)P. I.
Went to Abalonetti for lunch primarily because it is dog friendly. The wait staff was attentive and bought a bowl of water for my dog, but we weren't offered a doggie menu. (I didn't know a doggie menu existed until I read the Yelp reviews) The crab sandwich was delicious and the fried calamari was very good. We'll return the next time we visit Monterey. And I'll be sure to ask for a doggie menu.

Guess it's "hit-and-miss" here. I went on a weeknight around 7:30pm, they close out 9:00pm. 1st time here. Pretty empty, unfortunately most of the places on the wharf were. We had a party of four. Drinks a bit expensive, but the size of the shots were pretty generous. Bread was good, fresh, and warm. Good menu selection, but it's true of most of the places here. And most have a person in front hawking their clam chowder. There were three that night. But unfortunately, the food was lacking. We ordered the garlic fried calamari appetizer, Fried Combination Seafood Plate (2), Linguine and Clams, and a Rib Eye Steak. Lots of fried calamari, nice dipping sauces, but the batter was a bit doughy and oily. The fried seafood plate food wasn't hot, but not cold so we opted to eat it and not send it back. The batter was not only light, which i do like, but a bit soggy for the oysters and scallops. I had 2 oysters, 2 shrimp, 2 scallops, 3-4 wedges of calamari, over fries, which weren't bad. Linguine had good sized clams, but the sauce was coagulated, bit salty, and pasta wasn't exactly al'dente. Steak was okay, a bit undercooked for a medium, but always better than overcooked and a pretty good portion. Sadly, one of us got the runs (might have been the oysters and/or scallops), and one of us just felt plain lousy the rest of the night. Service though was excellent. Server was attentive and friendly. Not sure we'll be back. Sounds like others had better experiences than we did.

If the rating meter allowed for 1/2 stars, I would give this eatery 2.5 stars. I would give most -- if not all -- of the other restaurants in this tourist trap known as Monterey Fisherman's Wharf 2,1 or zero stars. (God knows I have dined at far too many of these dash and dines throughout the years for reasons unknown to me -- laziness perhaps). That being said, 2.5 stars is a compliment! But 3.5 stars means something different to a restaurant not in the business of serving transient diners. Since the restaurant is on the water, the ambience is cheerful; the scenary beautiful. And since it's located on this world class spot filled with travelers from every inch of the planet, the management expects to turn tables like it's McDonalds or something. So the wait staff is not interested in chatting or explaining or joking. But we managed to get our waiter to smile and chill out a little. He actually had an answer to my very difficult question of "What's your favorite item on the menu?" But I really like this place for the antipasto bar and the ravioli and the fact that the menu is closely Italian in its offerings and style. The profferings of the antipasto bar ($9 for a small plate; $13 for a large) include artichoke hearts, roasted garlic, Italian olives, feta cheese, sauteed squid, roasted eggplant, red bell peppers and more. The antipasto bar deserves 4 stars. More Italian themed restaurants should consider such authentic fare. The salmon ravioli in a creme sauce was good -- 3.5 stars. The pasta was a little thicker than my palate prefers and the sauce was just this side of being too thick. But the flavor won me over. My dining partner went for something comfortable and familiar with the Caesar salad. She said it was "decent," which means the chef didn't use enough (or any) anchovy. We were in town for a conference and Abalonetti's served a quick and tasty meal by the sea. It wasn't a life changing experience, but it worked.

Cioppino is definitely over priced. All you got in the small soup plate are two shrinked shrimps, one and a half scallops, two clams and two mussels. An inexperienced(i guess...) waiter took your bread away even before you finished without asking. An experienced waiter told you with 4 more bucks you can have fresh green salad and dessert on the menu with local menu order but ended up with a small plate of salad(fresh though) and one scoop of vanilla ice cream. BTW, flies could bother you if you chose window seats.

Stopped by for a quick lunch before heading home today in our RV and 3 dogs! Parking was easy the walk through the wharf is fun and this restaurant is very dog friendly! We sat on the enclosed patio where they provided our dogs with a water bowl and offered a menu for them as well served in a frisbee. The clam chowder served in the bread bowl was very good and the crab sandwich was amazing as well! Would definitely recommend this place!

My wife and parents have been coming here for 20+ years and had wonderful things to say as they've made it a must every time they are in town and it didn't disappoint. We requested to be waited on by Crispin as he is one of the best and a delight. Loved the bar and interior, chose to sit outside with the perfect weather and view. Started off with the Antipesto plate - feta cheese, garlic, roasted peppers, and artichoke - all were excellent and tasty. The Fried Calamari was the best I've ever had. Was lightly fried and the crust was delicate and perfectly flavored. I've tried this all over and you usually get a heavy, overly breaded, over fried, tasteless, and tough product. Not the case here. I could eat it endlessly. The entrées - Stuffed salmon special - fillet stuffed with cheese, shrimp, and crab topped with lemon sauce. Absolutely amazing! Cooked perfectly and had chunks of tomato and onion inside which was the new twist on this dish for me. I've tried many variations of this all over the west coast and it ranks in my top 2, tied for first. Can't say enough. Sand dabs were awesome, love the lemon butter sauce. My first time trying this dish and I like it very much. Will try it everywhere I go. Grilled Salmon was done right, garlic spinach and sautéed potatoes rounded it out nicely. Lobster ravioli with grilled prawns was delicious. Plenty of stuffing and sauced right. We finished off with some wonderful crème brulé - lightly crusted, just right. There was also a cappacino type ice cream in between some chocolate wafer cookies, drizzled with chocolate or ganache sauce that was amazing. Forgot the name as it was new to me. Love this place and its heritage. I will be a life long supporter.

Went here with dude is now my ex and it was OK. Our server one was absolutely fantastic. That's for sure. He was quick, friendly, and attentive. All things you need when you have two, tired, starving athletic people at a table. But the food yeah. I mean, we were in Monterey so we wanted seafood. It would have been a crime against humanity to not eat some fish. How I would describe my food: BLAND. Like, super bland. No flavor whatsoever. So just skip over this place if you're looking for something with taste. If you're just trying to fulfill your basic need of consuming food then cool. Eat here.

CHOWDER DISAPPOINTMENT Although I love this place and love the calamari, we ordered bowls of clam chowder. This was a real disappointment since the chowder we had was really good. This time, it tasted thick with lots of flour. In fact, I hit a couple of flour balls in the soup. I probably should have said something since I love this place and not sure what happened. For the price of the soup, it should have been like it was just a few months ago. Maybe the chef is having a bad day. Service and everything else is top notch, just the clam chowder was a real big disappointment. Sorry guys!

Good enough place along the old fisherman's wharf in Monterey. Their advertising for happy hour convinced us to come in. We were happy with our margaritas! Calamari wasn't out of this world. For high-quality, belly-satisfying meal along the wharf, better to visit the Old Fisherman's Grotto!

Do you feel like romancing the ladies at Fisherman's Wharf?!? Then come here playas! I needed a place to take both of my ladies, the wifey and my side chick (GiGi Monster). I called Abalonetti and they said that their restaurant was dog friendly so I reserved outdoor patio seating for two and half. This place can be found half way point up the Fisherman's Wharf. They have indoor seating and outdoor seating, if you are bringing a canine like me then you will probably have to ask for outdoor patio seating. They also have an array of the drinks from the bar. To start off we ordered a strawberry pina colada, it was damn good. GiGi Monster wanted some patron shots, but she forgot her ID at home so she got a dog bowl with water in it!?! We ordered some Toast with Whole Garlic Cloves to start off as our appetizer. It was quite yummy especially if you love garlic. It's a must to get seafood when you come to Fisherman's Wharf, so we ordered a dish that this place is famous for the "Cioppino". It was loaded with crab, shrimp, clams, mussels, fresh fish, and calamari. All of this yummy goodness is simmered in Sicilian marinara, garlic and white wine and it comes with bread. The seafood was fresh and it was a perfect dish to share for two people. You can't ask for a better place to have lunch or dinner than overlooking the water at Abalonetti Bar and Grill. We will be sure to peep this place out again next time we visit Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey.

I don't think you should go there if you are looking for a grilled fish sandwich, but if you ask a waitress about the house specialties and go for them, you won't be disappointed. The main issue for me when it comes to seafood is to be able to get something local and fresh. Abalonetti proposes fresh, local salmon, sardines, oysters, and few others that I don't recall. Oysters: 99c/fresh oyster is a great and delicious deal. Baked garlic oysters: amazing. In France we are a bit reluctant with baked oysters, but those were amazingly prepared and cooked. the combination of basil, butter and salty sea water gave them a unique taste. The deep fried squid: to me, is nothing special or extraordinary in that place, but good (light battered). Now, entrees... Grilled squid: very well presented, seasoned and cooked. large portion. lot of fresh veggies. Stuffed salmon (warning: NOT on the menu!): stuffed local salmon with local artichokes, crab and shrimps. This dish was awesome. Fine, tasty. The sides were spinach, cooked and seasoned to perfection with garlic, the garlic mashed potatoes. The sauce was in the proper quantity and not heavy in taste. This dish was nearly perfect If you go to this place do ask for the stuffed salmon! Seamed clam in butter sauce: great, nothing to say. Sauce was nice, perfect seasoning. Large clams. The recommended wine (white Vantana, south Monterrey) was surprising. light but fruity. Dry. The clam showder wasn't great. too heavy, too much starch (or flour). You can seat outside. Great view. Very friendly staff. We paid 150$ for 1 bottle of wine, 4 cocktails, 3 entrees, 4 starters (incl. 12 oysters)

First time eating at the wharf - yelped places to eat, but was sold on the previous reviews talking about 99 cent oysters. Sadly, no 99 cent oysters when we came on a Saturday afternoon. Other than that, the food was fine but nothing spectacular to write home about. Crab sandwiches, oysters, and clam chowder (of course). The waitress was friendly and attentive, and I like the option to eat at the outdoor patio by the water. Really nice Monterey view and breeze. May or may not come back here again, but most likely will check out other places first.
(3)Lisa C.
There wasn't much of a wait on a Saturday afternoon and we were able to sit comfortably as a group of 4. The quality and taste of the food was pretty mediocre. We ordered: - Clam chowder bread bowl $12.95: Tastes as you would expect. I did enjoy the freshness of the sourdough. - Crab sandwich $16.95: It's a cold sandwich served with fries on the side. The ingredients compliment each other quite nicely. - Angel hair pasta and sicilian marinara $12.95 (+ extra to add chicken): This dish was disappointing. The marinara tasted as if it were made from a can of tomatoes and it was not only watery but also sour and tasteless. The portion was also quite small, making it a let down altogether. Our waitress was very accommodating and my brother in law was able to customize his angel hair pasta by adding chicken for a little extra.
(3)Bob K.
Our server was very nice, the food was pretty good. I can't eat shellfish, so that sucks, specially when I love scallops. I think Monterey needs to refurbish the entire wharf. It's walking distance to the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa.
(4)Vanessa S.
Was pumped to have raw oysters! We ordered the food and sure enough on my very first raw oyster I swallowed pieces of broken shell. It sliced up my throat on the way down and I nearly hurled at the table. When I told the manager, he said that happens when shucking oysters... Not only is that an inappropriate response but I've been ordering oysters for over a decade and this has NEVER happened. Never coming back here. Terrible quality! Only reason I am giving this place two stars is because everyone else seemed to be okay with their food. Don't get the shrimp cocktail ( tiny tiny shrimp) or the clam chowder (waaaay too creamy).
(2)Elizabeth L.
Everyone in my group ordered fish and chips, which is hard to mess up, and Abalonetti didn't. It was fine - fish was fresh, fries were thin-cut and reminded me a little of McDonald's. Bread was really good -- very crispy on the outside, and doughy and warm inside. Service was friendly, lots of tables.

Fried Monterey Calamari has been voted Best Calamari since 1999 by Monterey County Weekly. The breading is different than anywhere else. They use cracker crumbs which adds a different texture unlike bread crumbs or batter. It's crispy, light, yet neutral to the succulent, perfectly fried calamari underneath. Once you have them, you may be in agreement with the rest of Monterey. Rating: 5/5 Monterey's Original Antipasto Bar includes Roasted Gilroy Garlic, Marinated Artichoke Hearts, Grilled Eggplant, Marinated Mushrooms, Assorted Olives, Roasted Bell Peppers, Feta Cheese, Garlic Spinach, and Marinated Monterey Calamari. This is the best plate of antipasto you will find anywhere! It has the best mix of flavors from sweet roasted garlic and bell peppers to salty olives and feta to vinegar marinated mushrooms and artichoke hearts. But the absolutely fantastic part of this antipasto plate is the Marinated Monterey Calamari made with EVOO (extra-virgin olive oil), red wine vinegar, fresh garlic, and herbs. It tastes like an Italian-style ceviche. The calamari is so tender, it just melts in your mouth. You can also order this on its own as an appetizer. Rating: 5/5 Grilled Monterey Abalone is panko crusted, topped with a lemon butter sauce, and served with sautéed vegetables and rice. The baby abalone is farm-raised at an adjacent wharf and as fresh as can be. The abalone is tender and soft. The panko crust adds the perfect crispy texture on the outside. The lemon butter sauce is so creamy and the essence of lemon is refreshing. Rating: 5/5 For dessert, take some homemade cannolis home with you. The cannoli shell is just crispy enough to hold in the creamy sweet cheese filling. It will be gone before you know and you will say to yourself, "I should have ordered two." Rating: 5/5

After being turned away from The Old Fisherman's Grotto because of their cruel no children allowed policy (regardless of how well-behaved one's children may be), my aunt and I decided to give Abalonetti's try. I am so glad we did! Great food, excellent service. The clam chowder was delicious, my picky 4-year-old ate calamari here for the first time and loved it. We felt welcome and will definitely be back to try more of the delicious looking options we saw on their wonderful and authentically Italian menu. They also had a great view of the water, we sat by the windows in the back and watched sea lions playing while we ate! Our server explained to us that there were a lot of sea lions right now because of the unusually large amount of sardines in the water. He was very nice to my children. Highly recommended this place!

Without going into a long discussion about how Old Fisherman's Grotto has decided to alienate a whole section of people (young kids, families with young kids, etc.) by making sweeping generalizations about them. . . I'll just say go here to Abolonetti's instead! It's just a little further down on the wharf, same side, turquoise exterior; great food and very welcoming. It's been here for decades offering really delicious calamari, clam chowder, salads, etc. They now also have a casual "Fish & Chips Cafe," right next door to the full service restaurant--where we all had a really enjoyable meal, including our young kid who is doing really well with her restaurant dining table manners. Old Fisherman's Grotto used to be our choice for our clam chowder fix, but not anymore.

Since our last visit we felt that this restaurant has resorted to cheap tactics in order to make more profits. It is obvious that they are not doing as well as Domenico's just across the walkway from them nor the other restaurants nearby. So the management has decided to get by with tricking customers as well as prospective customers. First of all we chose one of the busiest days to visit the wharf: Sunday of the Labor Day weekend holiday. The restaurant, which is normally very empty, had some full tables. We had decided to return as we had a good experience last year. We walked in at 3:35 pm and there were some empty tables that were in the main dining area. We were very hopeful to get seated immediately. However, the management told us that it would be a half hour wait! Another party, who was behind us, heard this and walked away. We debated on whether to wait or not but just waited. We were so delayed in arriving in Monterey due to tremendous traffic on the highways, otherwise, we would have been at the wharf by 2 pm. After waiting for about ten minutes another manager decided to allow us to get seated. We thought, well, how nice of him to do so. Guess he did us a favor, and in a strange way he actually did (as explained below). The server came by, and after taking our drinks order he asked if we were ready to order our food. We were still deciding. To our shock he informed us that if we waited until 4 pm or later to order we would be paying dinner prices. So we hurriedly chose our orders just to not be charged increased dinner prices. Then it occurred to us that the reason we were told to wait a half an hour to be seated was that they were going to have us wait until their dinner hour (4 pm) so that we would be paying higher prices! Very deceitful. Also I cannot believe that a restaurant would seat its diners prior to the dinner time hour and still charge them dinner prices if they did not order before the dinner hour began. This has never occurred at any other restaurant we have been to, and it makes no sense to do so unless one wants to make more profits. Secondly I ordered a glass of pinot grigio from supposedly Monterey which cost a couple of $$ more than the other pinot grigio and the other wines. When I received the wine it was clearly a chardonnay. After waiting some time for the server to return I told him about it. He said he would check with the bar. Brings back a bottle of the correct wine (pinot grigio), stated that 'It looks the same color to me, see?' I told him that it was clearly lighter in color than what he served me initially. Then he made a comment that, well, he really didn't know as he did not fill my order. Okay so being sarcastic and argumentative with a customer is now considered good form in this restaurant. Also if one doesn't know anything then don't make any claims. That left a very bad impression with all of us especially myself. I began to feel that my wine was a bait and switch tactic that got caught. They served a cheaper glass of chardonnay hoping I wouldn't notice it was not the pricier glass of pinot grigio. The food is definitely not worth the prices. Fish and chips were just passable. The cioppino was overpriced for what it was which was a little smattering of 'seafood'. Two miserable tiny crab legs included. The fried signature calamari they advertise, well, for less than that price we had better at our local pub. We ordered one crème brulee which was poor. The top was not 100% crisp as it should have been. It was like that last time too. So whomever is their dessert chef has no idea of how to make desserts properly. All in all, the unfair and deceitful tactics included with a sarcastic server as well as poor food will not make us return again. Instead of gaining and keeping customers they have succeeded instead in losing them.

If youre in Monterey youre definitely going to stop at Fisherman's Wharf. It's a wonderful collection of restaurants offering hot clam chowder and cold, raw oysters. Lots of other amazing food, drinks, and shopping also dot the row of wharf destinations. Abalonetti is one of the places we enjoy stopping for oysters. For a little under $10 you can get 1/2 dozen oysters and a non-alcoholic beverage, which is exactly what I ordered when I was last here in May 2014. Flora was our server that day and we had great service, and a great, icy plate of sweet shellfish. We've been here more than once. Abalonetti has been on the wharf for many years and we always enjoy our visits here.
(4)Michelle F.
Service was wonderful. The waiters are hard working and so pleasant. It was my first fish plate (not sushi, like straight pescado), and WOW it was delish. I recommend the stuffed salmon to all. Thank you the professional and polite staff.
(5)Lance D.
I've been here many times over the years as my family visits Monterey often. The food is now below average. Calamari steak was ok, garlic mashed potatoes were cold, mixed vegetables were cooked to different doneness with the carrots still being crunchy. How is that possible? My 14 year old could have done better. My wife's Ahi tuna was over cooked and the saffron rice had no flavor. And the wine menu is something out of a bargain bin at the grocery store. I ordered the best wine on the menu ($32) which retails for $14, it was warm and lacking any character. Not that I think $14 wines are usually good but really? This is the best you can do in California? I could throw a rock and hit a 1,000 better choices. Sorry old and tired friend I won't be heading back again.

$2.99 margaritas are amazing, I had 2! The clam chowder is also great. The portion sizes of the meals are a good size, taste is good. I was happiest about the affordable price and great atmosphere.
(4)Yvonne K.
We came in on a Sunday evening at 7:10 and it is an hour later and we still have not been served our meals. Terrible service but the people getting their dishes aren't complaining about them.
(1)Arnaud H.
I had the pretty good fish and chips! My parents both had the Swordfish Steak and they really liked it. The bread as good too. All of this for cheap price and nice view of the ocean.
(4)Ryan R.
Went here with my family to grab a bite to eat. We were seated outside with our large group and ordered drinks. For my meal, I decided to split an order of the fish and chips and fried calamari with my mother. They are known for their fried calamari. It is pretty on point and tasty, especially with the tartar sauce. The fries that came along with the dish were good as well. On the other hand, the fish and chips were probably some of the worst I've ever had. Obviously frozen fish, it reminded me of something you might get if you ordered fish and chips from a theme park or something like that. Overall, the service wasn't amazing, but it was friendly enough. Everyone else seemed content with their food, so just steer clear of the fish and chips.

Sometimes mediocrity is alright. 'It's the way it is', some may say. And truth be told, I didn't have high expectations when stepping in to this seafood restaurant in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf. I have dined at the Grotto in the past, so we decided to venture out and try something new. Abalonetti was pretty much empty on guests, with a couple at the bar, and another table with a family of four. We ordered the Fish 'n Chips and Crabcakes. We opted for a Margarita, since they were running a $2.99 Margarita special. I glanced to my right, as we were sitting at the table next to the window. I saw the manager pouring us some Margarita Mix over a small glass filled with ice. My heart sunk, as I knew that the choice of Margarita - at this hour, at this place - was a mistake. S**t, I thought. I couldn't stop thinking about the numerous bars I've seen on "Bar Rescue" with Jon Taffer. I saw the very same guy count money just two minutes earlier, as we stepped in to the restaurant. Now he was touching the ice in my glass, and he is putting a black straw in my glass with his filthy fingers. The food comes in promptly, and we start eating. The fries were actually really good. The beer-battered cod came in three's per plate, with two slices of lemon, a cup of ketchup and a cup of tartar. Simple. The fish was pretty good, good crust and well cooked. The crab cakes, on the other hand, were not so tasty. The flavor didn't really remind me of any crab cakes that I have had in the past, but then I am not a crab cake connoisseur. But all three of us at the table agreed that they were not good and they easily fell apart into a mash. Dining experience was alright, but I wasn't happy to see the lack of proper food and drink handling. It just threw me off.

We had a great meal here! The food was excellent and not over priced. Our waitress was quick and kind. I would go back!

RUDE, the gentleman that seats people was a complete jerk , we were trying to get seated outside where we could clearly see plenty of tables open , and rudely turned us away
(1)Mariposa C.
Yummy stuffed salmon! Halibut was great as well. Doggy menu is very thoughtful. Bit pricey but they have good drink specials. Waiter was very courteous and making sure we had everything.
(4)Jane L.
Lunch on a sunny Monterey day. Started with a dozen oysters - fresh, briny, and 99 cents! I am still kicking myself for not ordering more! The clam chowder is great. The blackened salmon salad delicious. The halibut the best. Good friendly service. Our group was comprised of one local and 3 former residents of the Monterey Peninsula. We were all delighted that Abalonetti's has maintained its high quality food and service!
(4)Jim W.
Solid seafood, pretty fair prices for the area. Service was very good and the server really knew her stuff. I had the cioppino and since it is made to order they were nice enough to alter it a little for me since I really don't care for calamari. The salmon, shrimp and clams in the cioppino were perfectly done and delicious. Overall better service, food and value than some of the places within a mile or so that also focus on seafood and capturing the crowds.
(4)Benjamin G.
Decided to get some "tourist food" at the wharf one night... and decided to pick a spot based on the chowder sampling. Abalonetti seemed to be the victor, so we went inside. Service was pretty good... we were given a nice window seat looking over the bay inlet and the server was more than happy to help with menu choices and drink choices. I have to admit, once the food came, I was pretty let down... I had order some sort of a captain's seafood sampler, which was supposed to be a fish and chips dish on steroids, but the dish was a real let down... especially for the money. The fried fish pieces, shrimp, and calamari resembled frozen stuff you get at the grocery store, and the taste was bland and pretty much non-existent for me. Luckily, my fellow dinners in my group were actually happy with their food, so I'm chalking this one up to an off dish. I would definitely go back for chowder or drinks & apps, but I think I'll probably try another spot for dinner next time.
(3)MIsty L.
This is one of our stops when we are on the wharf. They have a very nice patio to sit on and are dog friendly. They even off a doggie menu.. 2.99 for a 12 ounce draft cant beat that and 99 cent oysters. Staff is always very friendly
(3)David S.
This review is for the "Fish & Chips Café", the snack bar attached to this restaurant. They have the best deep-fried calamari & fries. I always upgrade my order to garlic fries instead of regular fries. They also have awesome clam chowder. Not everyone likes clam chowder the same way, but I like theirs because it is soupy (not thick and globby) and the clams and potatoes are minced, rather than in big chunks. $6.00 for a bowl. $7.95 for a bread bowl.
(5)Allan G.
We had two of the lunch entrees featuring squid today. Both were served promptly after some yummy fresh bread, and both were delicious. The waiter was attentive...in other words, this place is great! Thanks to Kevin for continuing to keep this place so special.
(5)Mel G.
Had the Parmesan crusted chicken with fries and wasn't bad except it needed more salt and more spicy chipotle. You couldn't even taste the chipotle. Probably wouldn't be back if I was in town. I'm sure there's other yummy places. The other food wasn't that great either.
(2)Melanie T.
Love the restaurant ... Great service and food.... We plan to go back and refer to friends and family. This is the only restaurant that serves brick oven pizzas. They are the very best .
(4)Diane S.
Stopped for happy hour and oysters. Oysters were fresh and drinks were cold. The bartender was super friendly and gave us tips on some sights to see. My brother had the antipasto bar and enjoyed the delicious variety of offerings, especially the roasted garlic. The calamari in all three styles was yummy. Overall good experience on the fishermans warf!
(4)Toni M.
The food was ok!...But the cashier on the outside part needs some customer service skills
(3)diana h.
Really enjoyed our meal, the atmosphere and our server here! We didn't want a heavy meal because it was late in the evening... We shared the small antipasto appetizer and the steamed clams. It came with some of thee BEST hot french bread ever! We weren't going to have dessert but fit it in. We highly recommend their mascarpone cheese/chocolate thing. Lol can't remember the name! It had chocolate shaving and amaretto on top. We were so full when we left! I think appetizer and clams were only $12.95 EACH
(5)Chuck T.
Solid choice for visitors and locals, alike! While visiting for the winter holidays, our Son suggested this place on Fishermans' Pier in Monterey. Great choice! Sure, there are plenty of other places to eat at the touristy Pier, but this place takes pride in feeding locals and tourists, alike. Fresh fish and poultry, great clam chowder, fair prices (lots of food and drink specials) and a nice outdoor patio overlooking the bay. Staff is knowledgable and friendly. Treated us like locals. Because of this, we have been back four times. If you are put off by the Pier or looking for a trendy nightspot, go somewhere else. But if you are looking for a nice experience in a busy locale, head to the Abalonetti (towards the end of the Pier).
(4)Nikhil S.
Abalonetti has a great location on the Monterey Fisherman's Wharf and a picturesque view of the bay. It also has a delicious calamari and clam chowder! The food is very affordable for a sit-down restaurant on the wharf, and the clam chowder in the bread bowl is the freshest I've ever head. The calamari is also good, as is the roasted garlic. They give you three pieces of toasted Italian bread and you can mash and spread out the roasted garlic cloves on the bread. So good!
(5)Christina A.
Starting off with the appetizers, my husband and I ordered the raw oysters, clam chowder, and the roasted garlic with the french bread. They were pretty big sizes oysters, but they weren't as fresh as I would of hoped. The roasted garlic with french bread was something we've never seen before so we liked the idea of it. Unfortunately the garlic seemed as if it were roasted a little bit too long as it lost most of it's garlic flavor. The clam chowder was for my husband and he wasn't too pleased. Most of the restaurants on the wharf have someone outside giving samples of their clam chowder. This place didn't, so we didn't know. We like our clam chowder more thick in consistency, this one was a bit on the soupy side. We did enjoy the bread that they serve complimentary to every table though. It was very soft and light in the middle and had a nice crust on the outside. I got the parmesan crusted rockport fish. It was delicious and cooked very well. I did not taste the parmesan on the outside, but I wasn't too disappointed. The spinach on the side wasn't seasoned very well, but the mashed potatoes made up for it. My husband got the steak and it wasn't cooked to how he ordered it, but we're not the ones to give food back in fear that something might be done to our food. We've seen too many movies where it's been done haha. I did see that a table that was seated, got up and left because no one ever came around to take their order. Another table was waiting for their bill and I overheard the couple telling their waiter it's getting cold outside. A reminder to their waiter that they still hadn't received it. The last table I saw kept having to get up and call the waiter over to get some service. Our server was pretty decent. We like not being checked up on too often so it didn't bother us. He did make sure that we got everything we needed before he would step away. Would I come here again? Probably not. It didn't wow me enough to want to come back and the food wasn't over the top amazing to let this place stick for the next time we're in this city.

Awesome Place! We are a large group with many requests. Perez was a great waiter. Service was super fast, friendly and helpful. We will be back. Had a great time and yummy food. :)

We really enjoyed this long standing old classic restaurant. A recommendation from a local, we experienced excellent service and really good food! The anti-pasta was my favorite and the marinated calamari it included was some of the best I have ever eaten! Lobster ravioli was fab, but I would skip the bread salad! Kid friendly and local wine selection was fantastic.
(4)Melanie P.
Mediocre. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder, I was looking forward to getting that chewy clam and lo and behold not one clam in my entire soup! Disappointing to say the least. Ordered calamari, it wasn't fabulous it was ordinary. We asked for extra cocktail sauce and bartender brought shrimp cocktail! Asked bartender some touristy questions said he'd inquire and NEVER got back to us. Not the best experience on the wharf!
(2)Steve G.
Decent place to eat with family. Food is good, don't expect amazing. Service was great.
(3)Kevin J.
Stopped in for a drink on a slow Monday afternoon. Their bartender Lawrence sat down with us and drew out a couple maps for some great local sightseeing. He was very accommodating and kind. Would definitely come back to grab a drink from Lawrence!

Delicious dinner, try the lobster ravioli With prawns in a creamy pesto sauce. The crab cakes are just right for an appetizer however they were so good I would have loved it as an entree. Quaint, romantic dinner for two, ocean view. Our server Lindsey was so sweet and friendly. We will be back the next time we are in town.

So glad I made a reservation at this place for Mother's Day! I was a little last minute on deciding where to take my mom for Mother's Day but quickly found this place on our way to Monterey from the Bay Area. I called in, even before hours and was able to book a 1:00pm reservation for 3. I was pleasantly surprised by the service, quality of food, and for the price! We first ordered the half order of the Monterey's Original Antipasto Bar. My mom was in love! She especially liked the roasted garlic, feta cheese, and mushrooms. They also gave us a huge bucket of bread! For our main entrees, I ordered the parmesan-crusted chicken breast with garlic mashed potatoes & fresh veggies and my mom ordered the cioppino, which she had been craving for! Both dishes were huge and were definitely worth the price. We all shared and we were so full by the end! I was expecting to pay around $100 but for all the food we got, it was more around $75 with tip! I definitely will come back when I'm in the area, especially since they allow dogs in the patio area!
(5)Joy R.
3.5 stars really. Killer fried calamari served with a fresh herb cocktail sauce. Outstanding Crab Louie, loaded with crab. Those are the high points. The low? Seriously slow, non existent service. Our server was on slow auto pilot. If you can't put it in gear, stay home. The greeter was a grumpy fella with an attitude from the get go. Not a good front man if you want diner returns. The seafood pasta was not my style. More like a big bowl of heavy broth soup. Penne pasta, a goodly amount of mixed seafood but the soup bit just didn't work for me.
(3)Vanessa S.
Ate/drank at about 10 places in our visit to Monterey, this was easily one of my favorites, even compared to the fancy places we visited. Table on the water, $2.99 drink specials & they had a special that day of $1 oysters on the half shell, so delicious & fresh...... Our server made our trip so memorable, she was very nice and attentive..... Can't wait to go back.... soon!!!!!
(5)Candi L.
I always come here when we stop in the area! They usually have .99cent oysters which is a great deal!! They also have a good kids menu with decent portions! My son loves their clam chowder and I love their garlic calamari! I usually get a pasta dish or pizza if we come here and you can almost never go wrong with that!
(4)Taitai S.
Just wanted a quick light Lunch after whale watching - I was craving Calamari and this place had a history of having one of the best so I had to see for myself. Found that they have a calamari 3 way option.. which is fried calamari cooked with 3 different style. one being the original, the buffalo, and pico di gio the buffalo style clamari ended up being my fave it was spicy and tangy just like buffalo wings except this had more crunch ! My fiance Liked the picodigio one it had a cilantro cream sauce tipped with fresh salsa on the side We got the crab cakes .... it was mehh I had better crabcakes its a good place for lunch. I had fun feeding the seagulls scraps of complimentary bread .. (we dined from the outside patio overlooking the bay)
(3)jeff k.
The calamari is spot on. Big pieces and plentiful. Very tender. Not chewy at all. The sauces are good and tasty. The clam chowder is decent. Had better at other restaurants on the wharf. The water was dirty and had stuff floating in it. Took a few sips but then decided that i rather not test it anymore and not drink the water. Would go back again but only for the calamari.

When I have friends visiting from out of town a trip to the wharf is always on the agenda. Since I usually have my dog with me, I am always on the lookout for dog-friendly restaurants. Abalonetti has a great outdoor patio and also is VERY pet friendly. In fact, they support one of the great local rescues, Peace of Mind Dog Rescue in their fundraisers. I always like to give back to those who give!! We were allowed to choose our seating outside by the water. They brought some of the BEST warm bread on the planet!! My little dog was welcome to sit in the chair next to me and they brought her a bowl of cold water. My friend ordered the Salmon and I had a combination plate with prawns, calamari and a cod filet along with fries. I could only eat half of it, there was so much. The service was great...especially when my friend was, ahem, bombed by a passing sea gull. They brought was warm, wet cloth and offered their apologies for something that was clearly not their fault. As an aside, do check that the umbrellas are in their upright and open position to assure you don't meet the same fate :-).

Came here last Friday before the rush. My boyfriend, me, and our pup were greeted right away and sat on the patio. Our server Delaina was very friendly and welcoming. We ordered their killer Calamari, my boyfriend had the calamari sandwich, I had the steak & fries (cooked perfectly MR), and our dog Harvey had a grilled chicken breast that was served on a frisbee! Super cool. Delaina was even sweet enough to warn me that his chicken was hot. We had a great time. Excellent service, food, and its great that they are dog friendly. Will be back soon!
(5)Catherine L.
Not bad nor was it great. We chose this restaurant since it had ample outdoor seating which was necessary since we brought the dogs. We were quickly seated at 1:30 PM on a Saturday afternoon and handed menus. Musts: Clam chowder -- mmm nice and thick with the authentic Monterey clam chowder flavor. Complimentary fresh baked bread - Yes!! Delicious since the inside was soft and the crust was a little crunchy. Okays: Seared ahi with rice and vegetables - Ordered the ahi medium rare, it looked more like medium well, was tough and dry, the side of vegetables and rice were a bit too heavy from the butter sauce and the "wasabi" sauce that accompanied the ahi was basically non-existent in flavor. Salmon Salad - I did not like the seasoning used on the salmon which sadly ruined dish for me. The salmon was well cooked, tender and a little flaky. The salad was good but could have had a little more "umph" for $16. Crab sandwich - Okay. Not very much flavor .. the fries were stellar though. Come again? The service was nice but the food was not memorable. Probably wouldn't return except for the chowder.

This is a review of their Fish & Chips Café, next to the main restaurant. This used to be a great go to place for marinated calamari. I noticed that it's no longer on the menu. I asked if they still had this dish, and the very helpful young lady working there said yes. She showed me the serving size and asked if that was okay, then appeared to go next door to the restaurant to get it. It was a nice-sized serving for only $3.23, and it was nicely spiced (hot peppers, garlic...). The tentacles were fine, but the rings did not even seem to be genuine calamari. Tender is good, but these were mushy. My plastic spoon easily cut right through them. It was like eating overcooked pasta. This squid was long past its prime, tenderized to near death, or it was not real calamari. Yuck!
(2)Rob F.
My fiancé and I came here based on the Yelp reviews and we were glad we did! She had the seafood pasta and I had the grilled calamari steak both of which were delicious! That was the first time I ever had calamari in "steak" format and I loved it! We had a table overlooking the water and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. Everyone there was talking and laughing and really seemed to be enjoying their time there. Oh yeah we also had the free calamari appetizer for mentioning yelp. Great place we will be back again!
(5)Rob R.
I had this plan to do a fish and chips tour of the area, but two things hampered my plan: (1) the fancy restaurants on the wharf had 45 minute waits; (2) turns out that my stomach can only hold two plates of fish and chips. Left that out of the initial calculation, somehow... Anyway, based on my two-plate Monterey fish-n-chips experience, this place wins. The fish-n-chips here both taste better and are cheaper than their competitors. No fancy tablecloths, but, then, seriously, do you really need one for fish-n-chips dinner. They also serve a variety of other fried things, including popcorn shrimp, etc., and can make anything with extra garlic so that you get to that heart attack with garlic breath. They also serve beer to wash it all down.
(4)Jess H.
Really enjoyed this place! I had the $0.99 oysters and they were the best I've had. I'm bit of an oyster snob, the way they shuck and presented the oysters was perfect! No dirt, shell pieces and they were plump and delightful. I had eaten the oysters at the Old Fishermans Grotto the night before, they were good, but the price and the small amount of shell grit they had brought them down a notch in my book. If you like great service and superior oysters give this place a try!
(5)Matt S.
Went here with a group of 7. Although the wharf was crowded, we were fortunate enough to get reservations and had no problem being seated at around 6. The service was friendly, but not great, mostly because the waitress seemed like she had to wait on quite a few tables. I tried three dishes (YAY for taking food from siblings!) from the "locals" menu, which is a very good deal ~10 bucks for dinner, 14 if you want soup/salad and desert. The sand dabs were tasty with a mild creme sauce, but nothing special. The salmon was a tad fishy and a bit overcooked and I would not recommend it. The last dish was the calamari steak, which this restaurant is known for. This was clearly the best dish as the calamari steak was cooked to perfection, very moist and had a nice light seasoned crust. I enjoyed the clam chowder, but I would recommend trying the samples on the wharf since everyone has their own preference. This one was very creamy, and fairly smooth with little chunks of potato and vegetables. The ice cream dessert was way too sweet. They topped the ice cream scoop with overly sweet whipped cream and generous amount of chocolate syrup. Plain and simple nothing fancy. If you're in the mood for some calamari this may be your place, otherwise you would be better served going off of the wharf to a less touristy location for better food and a more reasonable price.

Fishermans Wharf was packed with people. Still we were able to get outside seating. It's a wonderful place to stop and enjoy people watching on the wharf. My husband and I both ordered fish and chips. The fish and chips were okay. They weren't fantastic and they weren't bad. The batter was perfectly crisp and cooked perfectly. There just wasn't much taste to the batter. It was a little on the bland side but still good. What was fantastic was the service. Alex was our waiter. You talk about a top notch waiter. He definitely was. Most of our review is for the location and for the service.
(4)Eric M.
Went there on a Sunday night. We didn't like any of the food we ordered there. I ordered the Captain's Platter which taste like a regular fried dish that's worth $10 but costs $20. My GF ordered the shrimp cocktail, the shrimps are tiny. She got a salad also and that tasted nasty. Customer service sucked as well. The guy leading us to the table didn't even talk to us and just pointed us to the table. Heck, not even a smile from him. Bad experience overall. Go to to Fisherman's Grotto instead. If that's too pricey go across the street and eat at the Grotto Fish Market which is a less formal and sister restaurant of Fisherman's Grotto and cheaper.
(1)Emma W.
Great calamari. Our waiter was very helpful in helping us decide what to order. We had fried calamari, raw oysters, baked oysters, clam chowder, and halibut special. All was great and would definitely recommend this tourist spot for a good seafood meal.
(4)Ryan Y.
I was lured in by their 99 cent fresh oyster deal, but was highly disappointed. These oysters were not fresh at all! They smelled awful and the after taste was horrendous! I guess you get what you pay for..skip the oysters. The calamari wasn't too bad. I expected more from it since the menu claimed them to be famous. Seemed like it was sitting out for a bit before making it to the table. The lady had the gnocchi. Nothing special there too. However, shout out to out waiter for taking care of us. You're doing your job right!
(3)Aaron A.
Manger greeted us with an unwelcome presence. He looked so mad and had a dissatisfying tone of voice. When we sat down the waitress Brook made my friend uncomfortable when he was only asking for different margaritas she told him that he should already have experience with such a drink in a rude tone and that he just needs to know what margarita he wants. We all just asked for water and my same friend did not get any water and when we went over to ask for his water we were scolded and they brought him a water with no straw or lemon (which is what everyone received). We just felt really uncomfortable and didn't feel the environment.

Best clam chowder and cioppino on the wharf! Trust me, you want t to walk all the way down the wharf, clear past all the competition and noise to this unassuming but amazingly consistent place. We've come here for well over a decade ranging in party size from just two 6 and had an awesome experience every time!
(5)Mary M.
My son comes all the way down from San Francisco to eat here. He loves their seafood, and so do I. You have to try the "Bacon Bloody Mary" soooo good. Service was good. Right on the water. Can't beat that.
(5)Michelle D.
Best bread salad with no bread ever! friendly, fast and fun
(5)Kimberly d.
Husband and I stopped here for lunch o our last day of a short Monterey getaway. We shared: Clam Chowder - Good. I was more a fan than the Man. Fried Pacific Oysters - Oh, Goodness. They were so fresh and juicy and tender. AMAZING. I really want more of those delicious little morsels. Marinated Calamari - Let's start with: Hubby loves calamari. It's his favorite. That being said, I've never seen a man moved to near tears by squid. It was THAT good. He had Swordfish Steak - Large steak, he really liked it. Not so much a fan of green beans, but he devoured the fish. I had Parmesan Crusted Rockfish - Very good - not quite as melt in your mouth as Hudson House down in Redondo Beach, but it was fresh, and very, very good. Overall, the service was impeccable, the fish was amazingly fresh and the day was perfect for outdoor dining. A great place to end our escape from LA.
(4)Monica B.
I ordered the Steamed Clams appetizer. Most of them were filled with grit and dirt, and some of the clams were quite chewy. I pointed a grouping of black specks out to my husband. He asked, "that's not pepper?" Uh, no. The broth was tasty, filled with roasted tomatoes, green onions and sliced garlic. If only the chef would just clean the clams & mussels properly. A couple nearby also returned their plate of oysters immediately.

Okay there was a lot of restaurants to choose from, but my family chose Abalonetti. It had the best reviews and decent price. The service is just average. nothing special. The waiter did his job like he should: bring us food, drinks, and take our order. It took him about 10 minutes to bring 4 straws to our table, but at least our waiter brought them without us asking more than once. The bread was really warm and the butter was really good. I ordered the clam chowder and I was really disappointed. it kinda tasted sour. I didn't find many clams in it either. The portion was also fairly small for a bowl. I expected more from the clam chowder to be honest. However, the entrees came out really quickly. I doubted if they cooked the seafood all the way. The Sand Dabs was out of this world. the seasoning on the fosh filet was on point. the rice was really good and the steamed vegetables were good. You really can't mess up steamed vegetables. I must have been extreme melt hungry that night because the portions didn't look too big. they were average in size, but not average in price. Luckily I wasn't paying. My mother and sister shared the seafood pasta. I had a bite of it and the sauce was really good. My father had the Clam and linguini. He said he needed Tabasco sauce. You know what that means. Overall, Abalonetti was not a mind blowing dining experience. It was just average for a seafood restaurant. it was nothing spectacular. EDIT: I was still hungry so I ordered the fried calimari appetizer. it was BOMB! it filled me up just fine. I definitely recommend you start that.

Very good food, pricey but what isn't on the wharf? Brick oven pizza is awesome! Service was great, our waiter was very attentive and pleasant. Busy and attended to empty dishes very quickly.
(5)Luis M.
My girlfriend and I could not choose where to eat as we walked down the wharf.. so we decided on this place. Honestly, I was expecting mediocre at best. This place totally blew both our expectations out of the water! She had the best pasta she has ever had in her life (the seafood pasta) also, the clam chowder bread bowl and pesto pizza were amazing! Everything about this place was perfect. I will be coming back ASAP!
(5)Allan R.
This is basic over priced tourist food. Our food was okay. The salmon was okay. The veggies were bland and over cooked. The bread with our meal was the best part. Service was okay at best. There website is not updated listing old prices.

As a local, I choose Albalonetti's on the Wharf. I like the anti pasti platter and hot bread with olive oil and balsamic Calamari Siciliano also a hit. My hubby loves the Cioppino. They have cocktails and a decent wine list. A good spot to test your umbrella on a Rainy Winter Day, when the tourists are gone. Brings back childhood memories of caramel apples and cotton candy, when we would give the live monkey coins and you could still drive all the way out to the end. It's just a cute comfort food diner I'll always love.

Typical tourist trap. I should have known when I looked into the host's dead, dead eyes that this place was where tourists' souls go to die. Made an OpenTable reservation on a Monday night. Didn't need to. Curiously, I could have made a 6:45 or 7:00 reservation, but the next slot was 7:30. Ha ha. Some sort of marketing gimmick to make you think 7:15 was full, I'm guessing. Sea bass special sounded good until I looked around the dining room and saw the "steamed vegetables" that are the staple of bad seafood restaurants: Small piles of summer squash and carrots with a cup-shaped portion of super-fat-grained yellow-ish rice. Sigh. That's the best you can do in California? So I went with fish and chips. Nothing special. Kids shared a brick-oven pizza. Looked decent. Saw a table of Germans behind my wife ... kid had one of the pizzas but it was clearly ridiculously undercooked and soggy. Poor guy couldn't pick up the slices and had to pick at it with a fork for a while. Wife had the scampi. Shrimp were suitably large and tasted okay. A lot of spring onions in the dish, and it was drowning in artichoke hearts. Maybe a plus for some, but it was definitely overkill on the 'choke front. Server was chipper but pretty inattentive. I'm guessing she had two tables? Maybe three? A different table of Germans sat down behind us and pretty much laughed out loud at their draft beer portions. Looked like 8-oz pours to me, 10 max. Tiny glasses either way. Beer selection was poor. This place would not make it in any other location, and as we passed by all the other restaurants cheerfully dispensing samples of their chowder in front of beautiful seafood displays I regretted our choice.

Absolutely wonderful evening with my cousin. The server was fantastic and accommodating and the food was first rate! Completely fresh and sweet, super evening!

Setting : 3.45 Service: 3.5 Food 3.6 Total: 3.51 Sunday night on the wharf was totally different from Saturday night; it was slow. Candle lit. I had the Cioppino. Very little soup, and what was there was very thick. I think they might have really added wine to their marinara sauce. It had clam, muscles, shrimp and crab. There might have been fish, i ate quite a bit those couple days so don't remember exactly. I don't like crab in my cioppino, it's too much work for too little meat. The other comparable cioppino i had was from the Dutchman at Morro. I think i prefer the Dutchman. Not too bad, but not something i would recommend. Though the candle light was a nice touch. Would I go back? Maybe.
(3)steven p.
Food was poor. We ordered the captains platter. The cod and calamari were undercooked and the shrimp overlooked. The clam chowder was not thick and just okay. Service was good and staff was friendly.
(2)daran o.
Came here just for drinks.... Margaritas for 2.99... They were good for the price and the waitress was very friendly
(4)Thomas A.
I ordered the clam chowder, calamari, and swordfish steak here. It's so delicious. When I got up to throw away my garbage, a woman outside asked if she can have my leftovers food. I gave the woman a dollar.
(5)Monica L.
99 cent oysters on Monday night and $3 for margaritas! Awesome, and scored a free calamari entree! Ordered a dozen oysters, one margarita, calamari, and split a bowl of clam chowder between two people. Whole thing came out to be a little more than 25, which is a pretty good deal. Good service as well. Took a star off for a poor shucking job on the oysters, however. There were bits of shell in the oyster which made it a little annoying to eat, but still good nonethelss.
(4)Vivian W.
I first encountered Abalonetti in 2010 when they were handing out samples of their buffalo calamari on the wharf. I remember it was good, but I'm not a big fan of buffalo sauce so I kind of overlooked it. I admit that I used the buffalo calamari as...incentive to get people to go to Monterey with me. So the night I went the buffalo calamari was on par. Texture was good, flavor was good and even though i'm not a big fan of buffalo sauce, I enjoyed it immensely. It came with ranch dipping sauce and was delicious. I ordered the stuffed salmon (baked) which was on the specials menu and it came with spinach and mashed potatoes. If I had more stomach space I probably would have tried to eat the plate. While I didn't enjoy the texture of the salmon as much (I prefer mine to be seared), the scallops and crab and everything elise in the stuffing made me want to do a happy dance. I have also never gobbled spinach up like I did that night. The potatoes were amazingly fantastic, but I couldn't finish it because my fish portion was huge. Service was good, food was good...another place to visit when I go up to Monterey. :]

A restaurant located in the Fisherman's Wharf area of Monterey, this was a surprising gem in a sea of restaurants in the Monterey area. After falling prey to nice looking places on Cannery Row, I wasn't expecting much from this restaurant. With it's "historical" look outside, I was dubious. Once seated outside, the view of the ocean and the wharf calmed my nerves. There was a big party as well as a solo diner, so it seemed this place was a haven for anyone -- tourist or local. The fried calamari appetizer -- FINALLY DECENT and executed to flash fried perfection. Thank you to the sea gods for one restaurant that lives up to its advertising "BEST FRIED CALAMARI". The prices were decent for the food you get. The Shrimp Louie was loaded with the fresh tasting shrimp. The green beans were boiled to snap and the hard boiled eggs didn't have the weird black marking at all. Obviously, some care was taken in the components of my salad. Hooray! The Abalone BLT was a weird combination but my husband finished it. In the end, the only BLTA that needs to be eaten is one with either avocado or marinated artichokes. My kid finally ate a kids meal on this trip. That was a blessing too. Service was solid, friendly, and attentive. Check this place out if you are tired of the overpriced Cannery Row restaurants. It's a welcome change of pace to that side of town.
(4)Jen S.
My bf and I came here early Saturday morning. The bar was not open yet so we hung around and the staff was really friendly and made us our drinks even though they werent ready. I had the pineapple juice mimosa which was good and also included a fresh cut pineapple- yum! My bf had the bloody mary which was really good and also included a strip of bacon: YUM! The bartender which I forgot her name: Araceli? Was super friendly!!
(4)Eddie S.
Dear Mr. Pisto: Do you still own this place? If so, why does your wood-fired pizza oven have no one there who knows how to make a great pizza with it? What a waste. Pasta was overlooked and the cocktails need work, too. This place used to be a good place for locals but has apparently slipped into a tourists-won't-know-any-better joint. I gave two stars to leave some hope of return to better days.
(2)L M.
Fresh seafood, lovely ambiance on Monterey's wharf, & attentive service. Variety on the menu is sure to please all who visit. I will return!
(5)Franchesca C.
Wish I could review the food but the front manager made me take our business elsewhere. Me and my boyfriend took a trip to Monterey to celebrate our anniversary and the "manager" at the front quoted us 30 minutes. We went back within 15 minutes to make sure they hadn't called us, the manager was rude and said we still had 15 minutes even though we had told him we were just checking. He was so rude we ate dinner at another restaurant which was way better and they were much nicer. Don't come here it's bad business.
(1)Wilhelm Y.
As other reviewers have mentioned one can really fill up just by sampling all of the different clam chowders offered during a walk along Old Fisherman's Wharf. Of course, every restaurant claims to have the best so I tried a few. Crabby Jim's - Too salty! Gilbert's - Where are the clams? Old Fisherman's Grotto - Very good, but there's a wait to go in. Domenico's - Kind of gummy! The chowder at Abalonetti was good too, but not as spectacular as the one I had at The Fish Hopper the previous night. What caught my eye at this restaurant was the huge banner hung outside proclaiming "Voted Best Calamari ..."! I love calamari so after taking a peek at the menu posted outside I walked in for a table. After being greeted immediately and walked over to a nice table looking out onto the water I was given the full menu and a drink menu. The waiter came by immediately to take my drink order. I had already made up my mind outside on what I would be ordering, but I decided to study the menu more carefully anyway. After my drink arrived I ordered a cup of clam chowder and the Calamari Sandwich which also came with fries. I had a coupon for a free appetizer. The waiter told me it would be bruschetta so I ordered that also. I was quite surprised when they brought me a basket of warm, sliced French bread and butter. I didn't complain though. With a half marathon on my schedule for the next morning more bread meant more carbs. The bruschetta ( yelp.com/biz_photos/TtKb… ) was very simple but quite flavorful topped with chopped heirloom tomatoes, onions and some greens. The chowder missed the mark because they decided to throw four croutons on top ( yelp.com/biz_photos/TtKb… ) however. The croutons were stale. Blah! The chowder was nicely seasoned but the ingredients were all chopped up small as in bits of potatoes and bits of clams. I would have preferred clams a bit more tender too. Excitement filled my senses as soon as I saw the big Calamari Sandwich platter ( yelp.com/biz_photos/TtKb… and yelp.com/biz_photos/TtKb… ). I sampled the fries first. They were shoestrings even thinner than McDonald's fries. Nice crunchy exterior and nice meaty interior, these fries were excellent. The calamari sandwich comes on a soft, hot fresh-from-the-oven roll that resembled an oversized ciabatta roll. Accompanied by a thin film of tartar sauce, leaf lettuce, tomato slices and ripe red onions, I took a big bite and wow, it was amazingly good! The calamari is lightly battered and deep fried. The batter had excellent seasoning and the calamari was cooked just right with a nice crunch. The best thing was the portion size as the calamari was piled high. The fabulous calamari and excellent bread made for a very enjoyable carbo-load type of lunch. I left the restaurant quite happy and outrageously stuffed. The service was excellent as the waiter came by often to check up and to offer drink and water refills.

The only good item was the bread. Ordered fresh oysters that were on special but they tasted awful. I had never sent food back before but there was no way I was paying for these. The waitress acted like we were crazy and said she had to have the manager come over because they had sold "hundreds of thousands" of oysters that day and I was the first to complain. Had no problem taking them off the bill though after 2 other tables sent them back too. After the oyster incident we decided not to risk it and just get chowder bread bowls but those ended up tasting like canned chowder. Wish we'd have shopped around a little instead of stopping here because the place looked nice. There was a shop down the way handing out chowder samples that tasted worlds better than what we ate.

I went here yesterday for my first time for Dinner on Saturday night. I like how they're on Fisherman's Wharf with a bunch of candy stores and stuff, almost like a boardwalk feel, very nostalgic. The service was great. There was a guy outside I think serving Clam Chowder for if you don't plan on eating in the restaurant. They have a big bar selection and they have indoor and outdoor seating. I personally had a bad image of calamari in my head from past experiences but I knew that this place was known for it so we ordered it and it was DELICIOUS! I also got a caesar salad with crab and it was big enough to have as a dinner by itself. On top of that though I ordered shrimp linguine and my fiance ordered the halibut special. Everything we had was delicious. Our server, Joe, was funny and attentive. 2 cons: parking costs money. If you park in the lot closer its more expensive but probably worth the walk. Also, all the restaurants on the wharf close at 9 :(
(5)Ruben G.
Save your money. The food was not good at all. Steak was over cooked, dry and had no flavor. Veggies were under cooked.

Wife and I just ate here and the service was superb. We got the $1 oysters, $3 pale ale and the clams. Good deals, good food, great vibe. Next time we visit we will definitely be back!!! P.S. thank you management for taking care of us tonight. ;)

$.99 cent oysters on Sundays is the main reason why we wanted to eat here which was great. The server was nice and friendly and always asked us if we wanted more. I could have eating more, but we ate a lot from the previous night. The fresh oysters were good and the saw was tasty too. Definitely worth the price and good catch with the 99 cent oysters. Will definitely come back again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. Great ambiance right on the pier in Fisherman's Warf. We had a nice table overlooking the water and the service was pretty good to match. Their sourdough bread was top notch. My wife had the clam chowder bread bowl and it was very good and my pork chop was excellent. Portions and prices were very in line for the area. We will definitely eat hear again when in the area.

We came here on a friday night with a crew of 3 couples and a few rug rats. We arrived late for our reservation and they were very accommodating and seated us right away. We brought our own bottle of wine and they charged a reasonable corkage fee. The menu had a pretty good selection of seafood, italian, meats and kid-friendly pizza. We got the seafood pasta and sausage pizza. Although it took over 45 minutes, it came out pretty good. The clams, mussels, shrimp and calamari were all tasty. The pizza was also a hit with our crew.

My waiter was the best, happy hour drinks were strong and their special is $3.00 margaritas. The fish and chips could have been bigger. Great outdoor seating and pretty view.

Wow really? Wish I hadn't stopped frequenting the wharf all these years... a few things have changed at Abalonetti's since my high school years but one thing hasn't... that's their delicious food. We stopped in and sat at the bar... Stewart has been there for years and he knows what's up. Killer house Margarita only because he cocnocts it with agave nectar and lime juice no artificial fillers like margarita mix, triple sec or sweet and sour. Thank goodness because I cannot stand an overly sweet Margarita. Stewart's killer concoction makes for a mild, slightly sweet and tart uber refreshing margarita in a pint glass. Lovely. Every hour is happy hour here so you can enjoy this tasty beverage for $2.99/tax... are you kidding me? It get's better... right now oysters are 99 cents... so I post on FB 99 cent oysters and my friends go ballistic since they had just read about an oyster scare in the local paper yesterday. These babies were from Fanny Bay. cold water and super fresh looking and tasting... so I was not worried one bit. They do over a dozen kinds of calamari... no joke... we tried the Buffalo Calamari with a light blue cheese dressing. All their sauce and dressings are homemade and I love an establishment that does that. Also, found out if you are a local, with a flash of your license you get 2 hours of free parking in that big parking lot where there is a ticket booth/ gatekeeper. Good to know! We've been parking on the pier paying with quarters and any change we could find in our car all this time. Can't wait to go back and take advantage of their killer libations and tasty fun calamari creations!

Not the best when it comes to Fisherman's Wharf, but they're dog friendly! If you want a very happy pooch and a reasonably priced dog menu (that comes on a frisbee!), then this place is definitely worth the shot! If you do bring your dog, you will have to sit on the patio, of course. I found the patio to be not so good. The patio has NO lights, and was almost covered in bird poo. There was no place to tie our very energetic and mobile pup up while we ate, so we had to put him on one of the chairs. Ehhh. Not what I would have preferred, but he got to be closer to us during our meal. The food was okay. I had the Abalonetti Pizza, which wasn't the best, and the Strawberry Mangoe Pina Colada, which was great. The pupster, on the other hand, enjoyed his meal. Once he figured out that his chicken breast was food, he practically inhaled it. Now, that's what I call a happy pup!
(3)Scott C.
Since they are known for their calamari we decided to give it a try. It was very good. The rest was OK. It was nice to sit on the patio and enjoy the sun and relax while eating. The service was outstanding. Very prompt and attentive. Granted there were not too many people there.
(3)Armondo W.
Our server Joe was friendly and helpful. Apparently the calamari is brought in fresh and cleaned at 6am daily. We didn't want the usual battered crap from a bag, so Joe made a suggestion - Prepared Sicilian, with garlic - absolutely yummy. Best calamari I have ever had!

This review is for the service. My brother, friends and I had put our name down for a table at Old Fisherman's Grotto. So we decided to grab a drink next door (Abalontetti Seafood) while we waited for our buzzer to go off. I walked to the bar and sat down, my friend forgot something in the car so he asked for the keys and was heading out to the car to grab his stuff. Before he was out the door I hollered at him to see what he wanted to drink so I can order it and it will be ready when he returns. The bartender said that I'm being loud. I apologized and then he cut me off from the bar and said I was intoxicated (which I was not). I was shocked, but I didn't argue with him. I also am a bartender and didn't understand why he cut me off, but I respected his decision and didn't argue with him. Eventually my brother and friend returned and sat down next to me. I then tried to order for my brother and friend and he refused to serve them also. I told him I'm not drinking, but he refused to serve us all. At that point I was really upset. We still didn't argue with him, but for the bartender to cut off my brother and friend just because they were associated with me was very disrespectful and very poor service. We literally left and went to the business across the way and had a drink there. Bartender was an older gentleman probably in his 40s, Caucasian, and grey hair. I will never return to this place ever, not even if my friend was having a wedding here. I refuse to come to this place and will never recommend this place to anyone. I will make it a point to tell everyone about my experience here.

I came here on August 5th and had the best experience yet. I LOVE THIS PLACE. It was my birthday and my husband, sisters and daughter came here. My daughter was 4 months when we came here, I chose this place because it's very child friendly. My family and I used to go to the Old Fisherman's Grotto but they have a sign that says, "No car seats, No strollers" Basically, it read, "NO BABIES ALLOWED." I had heard about the calamari at Abalonettis and it is the BEST calamari I've had in my life. I've had it all over the world and this place makes the best American-style calamari. We ordered the garlic and also the buffalo style. I wanted to add both together but half my crew wanted just one or the other. Our host was really welcoming and helped me put my daughters car seat on those car seat holders, I don't know what they're actually called. The waitress was super nice too. She helped us pick the catch of the day. Two of us ordered salmon and two of us had the breaded calamari steak. I loved both (My husband and I order different meals and split them to try more options). We ordered coffee on the side and it was decent. I loved my experience here and wish I could go back soon. I also wish I had room for dessert but I was stuffed.

I came here last weekend with a group of friends. We were all craving oysters before hitting the road to head back home. Upon strolling the wharf, Abalonetti stood out as one of the larger restaurants, plus they had $1 oysters! Sold. We each had a dozen, and I also got the calamari and fries. Super fresh, loved it! Gorgeous views by the water too. Would definitely recommended this restaurant to others, and will be back when I'm visiting the area.

Though I haven't tried any other restaurants on the wharf, I was supremely satisfied with my meal at Abalonetti and would return here before venturing off to other spots in the area. For the most part the food was superb, the service was great and the price was nice. The restaurant started us off with some really tasty (and complimentary!) bread and butter, and I ordered a surprisingly impressive house Chardonnay for $2.99 (yet it drank like a $10+ glass). A place like Abalonetti should mainly be judged mainly by its seafood offerings, and all of theirs were superior. We started with the lemon-pepper calamari, which was exploding with spectacular flavors and a perfect crunch. Then I had a cup of rich, flavorful, hearty, creamy clam chowder, prepared with a prefect consistency and delivered at the perfect temperature. This was the highlight of the meal for me. I went for the fish and chips as my main course. Theirs was exquisite, with an amazingly tasty tartar sauce accompanying it. The shoestring "chips" alongside the fish were nothing special (darn-- just when I thought this was a five-star shoe-in...). If you're in Monterey and want to enjoy truly special food from the sea, give Abalonetti a try; you'll not be disappointed!
(4)Laura B.
This is a great place to enjoy the sunshine on the patio with lots of delicious seafood, ample cocktails and an attentive staff who will even bring your dog a bowl of water should you have one in tow. We had a whole dungeness crab, oysters on the half-shell, marinated calamari and Gilroy roasted garlic. I would definitely do the crab and oysters again. The calamari was okay but was not cleaned properly as the ovaries were left intact in some of the pieces. (Do they really not know that these should be removed?) The roasted garlic was not soft and in no way could be spread like butter like one would expect so seemed quite pointless. They serve bread with butter with your meal--stick to that--if you want bread. But the fresh oysters and crab made up for all of the other errors. Check out the drink specials on the way in and linger. 70% of these places along the wharf IMO are about finding a comfortable place to chill out.
(4)Cynthia S.
Abalonetti's has the best calamari I have ever eaten. My favorite is the abalonetti calamari with beure blanc. Nice view of the inner waterway too. We saw an otter the last time we were there. We even ended up with a great dessert. This isn't a fancy place, but it is our favorite on the Wharf.
(4)Justin A.
How can a waitress and the cooks not know what gluten is??? It makes no sense... Waited over 45min for the waitress to figure out that all the fish is breaded...which makes me think its frozen btw....but back to the matter at hand....its bad business to hire ignorant people to represent your company.... Shame on u...

What a sad experience on Saturday. I have been going here for many, many years. As soon as I could drive my BFF and I have been going here for the calamari. This weekend my boyfriend and I decided to play weekend tourist and went in for lunch. Maybe the staff cares less on a weekend because it is mostly tourists? Warm beer which they tried to rectify by serving in a chilled glass. Maybe a better thought would have been to start with a chilled glass. The second round sat on the bar for about 10 minutes before serving warm again. DUH! I had the marinated calamari which was warm, flavorless and literally melted in my mouth and not in a good way. That stuff was old! Marinated calamari should have at least a little chew to it,. This was mush. Seirously WRONG! We told the hostess on the way out and she could'nt have cared less.

Impressed. I've been going to the Wharf as a kid and how did I not try this place before? I think it's because I'm so addicted to the chowder at the Old Fisherman's Grotto that I don't have room for anything else after having their bread bowl lol. Came here with the fambam on Saturday night to have dinner with my cousin and her family visiting in town. We hadn't seen her in about 13 years and wanted to check this place out per the recommendation my grandparents gave. We made reservations for 9 people at 6:30pm and requested window seats. I hate going to places when you have a reservation and they make you wait- this was NOT the case here as we were seated right away. :) I wasn't craving seafood, I was feeling more like pasta so I ordered the Angel Hair & Sicilian Marinara. Yummy al dente perfection! This pasta had fresh tomatoes, basil and parmesan cheese. It was a generous portion- I didn't think I would be able to finish it. The combination of me being famished and the dish being so tasty made me leave not one bite! Since having that plate, I've been craving it so I'm looking forward to going here again the next time I'm at the Wharf. Next time I will pair that al dente goodness with a nice glass of wine. Mmm! Everyone from the host, to servers we interacted with were polite and very friendly. When we left the restaurant, we were standing outside taking pictures and the host offered to take pictures of all of us. He took a couple and asked us how we liked our food then said he hopes to see us all again. We liked this spot and will definitely be back again.

My boyfriend and I stopped here as our last destination (Fisherman's Wharf) on our vacation. I wish we hadn't eaten and just shopped instead! The service was very friendly. The food was not that good. The calamari appetizer was a hit with my boyfriend, but that was about all we liked. I ordered the pepperoni pizza- and while it wasn't terrible it was overly cheesy and the sauce tasted like a basic tomato sauce you would use on pasta. Add some spices & herbs! My boyfriend ordered the shrimp cocktail which he felt was bland and tasteless. :/ We also had a margarita & a soda. Margarita was decent, soda tasted like plain bubbly water. $38 for not great food. Ouch.
(2)Jocelyn T.
I got uber excited that they had bouillabaisse on the menu. I've been trying to find this entree since Spengers back in the 80's served it. We ordered our entrees and the bouillabaisse was not like what I had at Spengers. The bouillabaisse almost tasted like Cioppino but with a lighter sauce. The dish was okay but was expecting a little more. if anyone out there knows of a restaurant in the SF Bay Area that serves bouillabaisse with sherry wine, please let me know. I will be there in a hot SF minute!

We're VERY Sad...one of our favorite dining spots is no longer the top notch place it once was...sigh! Every time we go down to the Monterey Peninsula we plan on eating at least one lunch or dinner at Abalonetti's and this visit was no different. What a huge disappointment this time around! We arrived for dinner and ordered our favorite calamari dishes and they were disgusting looking. They were over cooked, thrown on the plate and just totally unappetizing and far from memorable. And the first bites confirmed what we feared, they were tasteless and tough and barely edible. Personally the only thing on my dinner plate that WAS delicious was the "garlic mashed potatoes", the calamari was tough, burnt and tasteless and the veggies raw and at the dinner price, not quite a bargain for sure. I had to beg other people at my table to take my calamari because I didn't want to have to explain to the waiter why I wasn't eating my food. Well...now we'll just have to cross Abalonetti's off our list next time around and it makes us sad to have to do this since it's always been a highlight of our trips to Monterey.
(2)Kim H.
Tasty food with friendly efficient service! We were very happy with our dining experience. Thank You so much! See you again soon...
(4)Julia C.
I did not expect to be writing this kind of review. We had a truly great day in Monterey, a great meal here (a dozen fresh oysters, bouliabaise), good wine and service. It was the only meal we ate that day, so I have no doubt that the horrible food poisoning we got that kept my husband and I out of for days came from here.
(1)Lex E.
Food was superb and reasonably priced compared to other options on the Wharf. But what stands out most about our visit was the exceptional service by our waiter Yovany and the rest of the crew. They are great for families and made us feel comfortable for bringing our 2-yr old son in. Yovany entertained our boy and made a quick friend.
(5)Tony T.
Our pastas were ok except the ciopino which was kinda salty. The service was excellent.
(3)John M.
Great antipasto bar, excellent Martinis.
(4)Jay C.
I can't even begin to review this place. It looks nice on the outside but the food was bad. When we ordered we asked to substitute penne with linguine and the waiter said "no problem". When the waiter brought our dish out, it had penne and he asked us if everything was ok. We told him that we had ordered it with linguine and he took the dish back and came back with the correct pasta but our dish was cold. We also ordered the clam chowder and it tasted watery, flavorless, and just plain bad. You're better off getting clam chowder from one of the small places out in the strip area.
(1)Rick V.
Went here for lunch, the food was terrible! The waitress was nice as we did not like our fried clams so she remove them from our bill. The drinks specials were not that great either. And the place was empty, should of checked yelp before eating here.
(1)Debbie A.
As always, food was prepared to perfection! Never disappointed. Awesome customer service and romantic atmosphere. My favorite, Abalonettis calamari! If you're ever in the area stop in. I've been coming here at least 4 times a year for over 20 years. Never disappointed!
(5)Litas L.
Undercooked calamari appetizer. The so called "Captains platter" more of the "Skippers platter" - single tiny piece of fish filet, 4 shrimp and 3 dried out calamari flank steak pieces with some fries. That's pretty pathetic. No wonder this place had plenty of seating - indoors and outdoors.
(1)Melissa H.
Was walking around looking for a place to eat and just randomly picked this spot and I was really happy we did. A bit pricely but worth it. The seafood pasta and lobster ravioli with shrimp was delish.
(4)Derek W.
This is our go to place on the wharf. Good food, great service, and good for kids (unlike some places on the wharf) Indoor and outdoor seating. Great for that wonderful Monterey day.
(5)Jenni H.
Good, not great food. Service was good. Sat down immediately on Memorial Day for lunch. The chowder was good and probably the best part of my meal.
(3)Steve L.
Awful, simply the worst frozen fish and chips we've ever had. Food looks Nothing like the photos, avoid at all costs!!!
(1)Andy L.
My wife and I haven't been there for a couple of years, we went there on a weekend for lunch and love the calamari. I wanted to go to the old Fisherman's Grotto but my wife talked me into going there last night. The maitre d showed us to the table as soon as we walked in. waitress was polite greeted and asked us for drinks then left. she came back quickly with drinks and took our order. 30 minutes passed no sign of her. we ordered calamari for starters and came to our table cold and rubbery. my wife mention to the waitress that the calamari was cold we ask to cancel the calamari and wait for our entree. as soon she took the calamari the entree came fast as if it was sitting there. My wife ordered there special for the night. lobster, san dabs in a creamy pasta dish. I don't know if the waitress was mad that we sent the calamari back because when she ask if my wife wanted cheese over her entree, she brought us over a glass jar with parmesan cheese that you would shake over a slice of pizza. sitting 3 feet on the side of us she asked a couple for cheese on there dish and she brought fresh grated cheese and poured it over there dish. I am sure glad my wife didn't throw that glass jar at the waitress when she saw what just happen. the food is good but the service is not up to par! we are not coming back!
(1)Dee V.
Food was okay, a bit expensive for what it was. The Bloody Mary I ordered was kinda gross and watered down. The atmosphere was nice, and the staff was friendly. What I liked the most was their clan chowder. Other than that, eh... Nothing to write home about.
(3)Cilishya D.
Great food. Portions are huge. Service was amazing! There are so many places to choose from but if I am ever in the area again I would come back here. Friendly atmosphere and so much to choose from.
(5)Eric G.
My girlfriend and I came upon this place with not too many expectations. We were greeted by the manager/owner and took a seat at the bar. I ordered a margarita, because it was on special, not too good. Better to pay full price. We ordered the salmon and the grilled calamari steak. The salmon was good but the calamari steak was some of the best seafood I have ever had. Our server brought us a calamari appetizer because the wait was a bit long and that too was wonderful. If you come here, I recommend ordering some type of calamari dish, you will not be disappointed.
(5)Christopher J.
Took the family there. I have two kids 4 and almost 2, the staff was really nice and welcoming. The food was quite excellent for the wharf. The sand dabs were a hit as well as the fish and chips, fried calamari, and seafood pasta with huge chunks of crab. Again great customer service, that usually makes a great review for me.
(4)Steve G.
Food was good but the service.... not so much.... to start off once we were seated my wife placed her purse on a chair behind her. A few minutes later the bartender approached our table and said because they have a very busy patio we would need to move her purse. I asked why we could not leave it on the chair (as we were the only patrons on the very large patio and there were over 25 open tables) and was told I needed to mind her request and lose my attitude..... had I not had 3 hungry children with me I would have left as soon as this happened. Additionally the waiter was very rude and rushed us through the meal. Each persons food came out a separate times as well which made the meal not very easy to eat together. Finally the waiter found it more important to have a 10 minutes conversation with someone else that came to eat instead of refilling our drinks or attending to our table. I would not come back to this place based off of the service and poor treatment of patrons.
(1)Janey L.
Lousy Food, Terrible Service & OVER-priced... The worst meal we've had in a while - 3 salads: 1 SOAKED in dressing and inedible; another with chicken the consistency of mush; 3rd tasted like antipasto out of the jar - yuck! Clam Chowder very ho-hum... The waiter never checked in after bringing our food and they were not busy - only 2 tables occupied. If you want a good meal that is worth the $$, this is NOT your place. Try the Brew Co on Cannery row instead - you won't be disappointed.
(1)Tracy M.
I should have gotten the pasta! The pasta dishes looked so good- and are part of the reason we tried this place. Instead I ordered the shrimp and chips. The shrimp was a bit over fried in my opinion- almost burnt. It was a beautiful location though with a nice view of the bay.
(3)Lynda S.
Good food, good service, everything was fresh. We brought our dog too cold to sit outside and no heat Los, that was the only down side... Had to take desserts to go
(4)Jess Y.
Not very good. We saw the lines and thought, they've got to have something good. I've eaten at the main restaurant. This place has an outside patio. The portions are small for what you pay, and what you pay for is not that good. The garlic fries were soggy and blah. The calamari was tough and the popcorn shrimp was extra fishy. It was extra fishy to the point where I ended up spitting it out. The clam chowder was okay, lots of cream was added. Did not find many clams, but lots of potatoes. The fish was so-so, but that to was overcooked. I was just not happy. Then the gal at the cash register had a sour look on her face that kind of made me not want to order food. I understand you're busy but that is customer service and the main portion of your job. I just have a churning in my stomach and feel crappy already. Not happy at all.
(1)Hylary L.
I have visited Abalonetti several times and, while it's not my absolute favorite restaurant on the wharf, I am a fan! I really like the outside seating area and my husband and I recently visited because they are dog friendly! They have a dog menu and everything, so we were able to get our pooch a very nicely sized hamburger patty served in a frisbee...he loved it! Our food was also good, with lots of good and delicious portions of seafood. If you're on the wharf and want to try a tasty restaurant, especially if you have a dog with you, I would recommend Abalonetti. Good food, friendly service, and welcoming to your canine companions!
(4)Mike T.
The seafood was wonderful! We had a calamari appetizer, calamari steak, and the rockfish. All were cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. Attentive service, very good prices, and a view! The only downside was that the flash fried calamari was served with cocktail sauce and tartar sauce (yuk!). A nice marinara would have gone much better. We stuck with the lemon wedge. The calamari steak is to die for!
(4)Jeff B.
Very disappointing experience. We were greeted by a gentlemen who insisted we had made a reservation overlooking the sidewalk and wasn't much interested that we were not that party and had requested a table overlooking the water, which we got. Mentioned we were celebrating a birthday, but nothing was done for us. The fish entrees we had were very average and the sides (rice, vegetables) were bland and barely warm. The ultimate crime in Monterey is to serve bland mediocre clam chowder, but this certainly was. The whole experience felt like we were just disturbing the staff to dine there (although our waitress was sweet and attentive). We should have chosen the Old Fisherman's Grotto just a few doors down which never fails to please.
(1)Steve W.
My family has eaten here twice, and loved it both times. Like many restaurants at the wharf, they had a coupon online for a free appetizer. Their fried calamari is very fresh, not rubbery, and not oily. My wife and I had their specials, one was mahi mahi, the other, lobster medallions, scallops, and shrimp over angel hair pasta. We enjoyed them both. Our kids splits the popcorn shrimp kids meal, which I tried and it's probably the best kids meal I ever sampled. My only minor complaint is that our server didn't tell us about the free appetizer or the happy hour specials. We had to ask.
(5)Alex L.
The Wharf in Monterey is like walking down the main aisle at Costco. Everyone is trying to hand you a free sample. The only difference is the samples are all clam chowder. If you're covert, you can get full off the sum of all the cups. I decided to just give Abolonetti a try since they were rated a solid 4 stars and had the crab sandwich I been craving. The Costco food person serving the clam chowder told us they give you a free calamari appetizer with every entree order. Score! They also have raw oysters for 99 cents all day everyday. Double score! We ordered the crab sandwich, two bowls of clam chowder, oysters, and of course the free calamari. One was in a bread bowl and the other was in a non-edible bowl. Both were piping hot and a very generous portion. Flavor was good and consistent. Not too potatoey but also not loaded with clams either. Everyone has different interpretations of what the ideal clam chowder should be like so you should definitely sample them before stepping in. The crab sandwich was a bit bland for me and the meat was way too cold. I like biting into meat that doesn't taste like it was just yanked out of the Bering Sea on the Deadliest Catch. The 99 cent oysters were perfect. Each portion was equipped with a generous portion of cocktail sauce, horseradish, lemon, and Tabasco. They were all split open nicely with no little fragments of shells in the meat to chip your teeth on. Why pay more? I honestly wouldn't be able to tell a difference between a 99 cent oyster vs a $3 oyster. Size is not a factor here. The giant ones taste like a blob of disgusting rotting mush of all decaying matter of sealife that's been fermenting in the sun in August in India. This size is perfect. The calamari didn't have as many tentacles as I like. I think Americans prefer the body while Asians prefers the squiggly stuff. I think it just has more flavor. Besides, there's something about eating things that looks like rolled up condoms that grosses me out. But whatever, it was free. I'm not complaining. Service was also great and we were constantly being catered to. Come here during non-peak hours so you can score a seat by the ocean for a spectacular view of the bay.
(4)Tom B.
Great Antipesto Bar the Capris Salad with Anchovies was good, not much of fish selection I would expect
(4)Anai H.
Terrible service. Alright food. Wouldn't go back. The server was rude and unhelpful. Very unprofessional & Inattentive.

Thank you for sponsoring the Peace of Mind Dog rescue on April 23, 2015. The food, service and view were great. And 100% of the proceeds went directly to Peace of Mind. A true community role model. Thank you!
(5)Brian W.
This place had good food and good drinks. The staff was great. All the way till the end. 8 army people on separate checks and it took forever to get them to make it happen.
(4)Aaron D.
The exterior has little appeal... I really don't know why I went here honestly. Every other shop on the wharf is full of restaurants with staff practically busking alongside their chowder. Maybe me and our party just didn't want to put up with all the people at this point in time? I have no clue. Went for lunch, the waitstaff outnumbered the patrons (Maybe lunch heats up later in the hour here? Doubtful. ) and our waiter made an appearance to greet us / take orders but after that we were up a creek without any water. After receiving our food things seemed to have been getting alot better... until a member of the party took a bite out of their "burger" (patty, fresh out of the freezer) to find it was cooked to a new level of well done. If that wasn't enough a fly that was buzzing our table for a while decided to... shit you not... proceeded to fucking die and land find his final resting place in my friends food. His levels of desperation for sustenance were now most apparent, we acted like this disgusting event never happened and carried on (prior convictions had us under time constraints). Prices were probably the lowest I had seen on the wharf so if you're on a budget, don't mind having a glass vacant of liquid and flies are something you're into... this is the premier restaurant to visit. If not... go somewhere else and spend a few dollars more on a plate that has been unadulterated by this side show and you'll be happy you did. Would have been better off ordering room service honestly. Really disappointing. :|

We were coming to the wharf for lunch and I chose Abalonetti because their website advertised "Every Sunday is Oyster Sunday, Fresh oysters just 99 cents all day!" I made a reservation on open table, so when we arrived we were promptly seated by the window. Unfortunately, they ran out of the 99 cent oysters I was excited about.. ;( Oh well, it happens! We weren't too hungry so the bf and I decided to share a bowl of clam chowder and fish & chips. The food came out pretty quick. The clam chowder was good, it had a nice bumpy texture to it. Fish and chips were okay, nothing special. They did have nice views all around the restaurant.
(3)Phil M.
Came here off a restaurant.com certificate on weekend get away. Very pleasant hostess who greeted us and kept us entertained while waiting for a table. Our waiter was very friendly and courteous. His name was Carlos. We had two appetizers. Clam chowder and fried calamari both were good but needed more seasoning. We split clams with linguini and white wine sauce which was very good and a large portion for an item we split. Overall I would come back as it was a good atmosphere and portion to quality and prices were good.
(3)P S.
Delicious classic fried seafood and chips in an inexpensive walk-up with table seating. Authentic atmosphere. You'd probably pay three times as much for the same thing in most of the other restaurants on the wharf.

It was a clear sunny day and lunch was to be had. We stopped by Abalonetti for their oyster special since we were seriously craving delicious oysters. Their special price was for dine-in only, they charged double for to-go orders. We sat by the window and started with a dozen of their oysters (don't remember which kind). The oysters came out and we were highly disappointed. They looked like crap. There were nasty crusty seaweeds stuck all over the shell which ruined the presentation. Amateurs must have shucked them because there were pieces of shell inside the oysters and every one of them was very unpleasant to eat. Not to mention they were all salty as F. I felt sick to my stomach and did not want to sit and eat anything else they offered. The only good thing was the service, although it doesn't say much because all he did was get us our drink and serve us the nasty oysters. At least he was friendly and nice. Otherwise I will not be back....ever.

I'd give this 5 stars for excellent service: for how everyone treated my best friend (My dog) wow- they encouraged me to let him off leash until some other dogs came through. A personal drinking bowl for my dog. The wait staff constantly ensuring everything was ok, I was offered the "local" menu, and .99 cent oysters! and of course 2.99 happy hour all day. I highly recommend this place if you are visiting the pier area

Service provided by Brooke was very good. She was very attentive and comped my soup after I found plastic in it. Wife's fish and chips was alright. Far too much breading. Chowder was good, despite finding the plastic in it.

Everything we had was delicious! The Marty's dish was spectacular (eggplant and calamari Parmesan) everything was cooked perfect. Husband had Alfredo, loved it, yummy clam chowder. Everything was wonderful. Great service, great food.
(5)K-A H.
Very disappointed, we order the dungeness crab which they ran out, we order the sardines which they ran out too. We order the lobster tail, expensive, bland, not worth the price. Try else where.
(2)Lucas J.
horrible bad service food was undr par there was sand and grit left in my seafood pasta im upset that this was the place we chose to eat. the crab salad sandwich was ok but something i could have made at home, the clam chowder was average
(2)Nicole H.
Oysters were yummy. My hubby had the shrimp scampi entree & it was amazing. I had the ahi & veggies & it was good but the shrimp scampi was much better.
(4)Richard P.
Three stars as the calamari was excellent but the clam chowder was tasteless. They forgot to put in the clams. It tasted like flour and cream. The bread to come with the soup arrived late with excuses. Would not return.

Having eaten at a very average competitor restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf, I didn't really have high hopes for Abalonetti. I was pleasantly surprised. We came here for dinner on Black Friday, and the restaurant was very full. We got the last table for 2, which unfortunately was in a small room at the back of the restaurant, and we were squeezed into the corner between another table and a hanging pot plant, with two loud talkers on other tables. That was probably the worst part of the evening, and fortunately the loud talkers left soon. My boyfriend ordered the sand dabs and I had the Abalonetti calamari entree. The sand dabs were quite tasty, and I loved my calamari. It wasn't as oily as a lot of other fried calamari dishes I've had, and it was so tender! I also enjoyed the vegetables on the side, which tasted fresh and not overcooked.

Great Food with a Great Price. Best Calamari in Monterey, Period. Awesome specials, all day happy hour. youtube.com/watch?v=-T-9…

Our "Dine Out Seniors" group has eaten here many times. We again all ordered the local's special. This time, I ordered the Salmon and found that it melted into my mouth. Everyone truly enjoyed the meal. This time, I ordered a Vodka Tonic instead of a Margarita and when I received my bill, it was $6.50 instead of $3.00. I was disappointed that the waiter we always get when we go there did not tell me that it would cost more. His tip was not as fat as i twould have been.

Worst service.. Waiting 15 mins just for water... Another 40 min for food... Food was bland.. Fish was Not fresh at all.. Don't recommend any one to go here...there are more better places then this in the market..!!

Popped in the other day on a cold, blustery Monterey evening. I was on the hunt for warm chowder and some fresh seafood. Narrowed our search to the Monterey Bay seafood hub, a.ka., Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf. We took a stroll down the Wharf pier on the quest for our dinner wish list. After gleaning a few dinner ideas from Yelp and perusing a few menus (and dodging a few restaurant solicitors), we set our sights on Abalonetti's. Great schmorgish board of delectable offerings spanning the dinner spectrum. Once our server recited the daily specials, my mind was irrevocably sold. The Parmesan-Crusted Red Snapper doused with a sublime lemon burre blanc emulsion and a dollop of fresh pico de gallo, served up with some creamy garlic mashed potatoes, was fantastic! Ever last bite was consumed with a flourish! My boyfriend had the Shrimp and Fries Plate, which was a slam dunk seafood sensation. Large shrimp coated in a crispy batter with tartar and cocktail sauce on the side. For dessert, the Praline Chocolate Cake keep us completely satisfied well into the night. Velvety chocolate cake with swirls of praline, drizzled with caramel and topped with mint...need I say more?! Everything, from start to finish, was delicious and amazingly fresh. Beautiful vistas of Monterey Bay from every seat too. We'll definitely be coming back!!

I don't understand why so many people have given this place a bad rap. I eat there often, love the clam chowder & fresh bread, their pizza Margarita has a nice crisp crust & the fried calamari, which I think is the most tender & delicious on the wharf, is served hot with 2 yummy sauces! I find the waitstaff to be friendly & attentive. Could it be the fact that I'm an old Italian lady & that's why I'm getting preferential treatment?
(4)Nicholas A.
Had a fantastic meal, our server was Lindsey and she was very friendly and helpful. The manager, Stuart runs the best restaurant on the wharf!! Will definitely return when in town again!
(5)Susan C.
Order the Antipasto Plate! It's really great with artichoke hearts, roasted garlic, calamari, mushrooms, carotts, etc. It's big enough for 3 people to share. I also loved the tomato caprese salad with tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, green onions, basil, anchovies and chopped red bell peppers. We sat outside on the back patio and watched sea otters and sea lions frolicking in the sea. It was such a great find. Thanks yelpers!!

Good food and great service! Stopped here to peruse the menu and the hostess asked to give the pooch a treat. She also showed us a "doggie menu" with a grilled chicken breast or hamburger patty, served on a souvenir frisbee. After such a friendly greeting, we decided to take a spot on the outdoor patio. The human menu was pretty standard wharf fare- lots of seafood and some pastas and brick oven pizzas. Getting a very late lunch after whale-watching, I was hungry and went way overboard on ordering. We had fish and chips for an appetizer, the Abalonetti pizza, and a Caesar salad. The fish and chips were perfectly crispy, and the Abalonetti pizza was a very rich pesto-sauced vegetarian pie. The portions were very generous. That pizza is not individual sized! (Well, maybe a very hungry individual.) Because we ordered all over the place, the fish and chips and pizza came first. We quickly realized we ordered too much and asked if it was too late to cancel the salad. It turned out the salad was already made so they first said they couldn't remove it, but then the manager very kindly offered to take it himself and remove it from our bill. Very nice of him to do so, and we really appreciated it. The service overall, from welcoming hostess to attentive waiter to understanding manager, was just great. It was a treat to dine here- see you next time we're in Monterey!

My boyfriend was born and raised in Monterey and we took my family here over the weekend and it was wonderful. Right on the wharf and we sat by the window to watch the sun go down on the water. The chowder and roasted garlic apps were delicious and I could barely leave room for the meal. My parm crusted chicken was mouth watering and everyone else was drooling over their various fish dishes (between the six of us we tried most of the specials, it's all good) The wait staff was awesomely friendly, the bartender even checked on us after we were seated to ensure we liked our drinks we ha ordered at the bar. I definitely recommend this place if you're on the wharf, and p.s. They have a locals menu with great deals if you ask ;)
(4)Emily J.
One of the original restaurants on the wharf. We started with $3 margaritas, advertised on the board out front. They taste like $3 margaritas. This isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, just okay. I forgot to mention yelp for a free appetizer. D'oh! The antipasto bar was very tempting -- a vegetarian's dream -- but after much thought and discussion, we both ordered the whole crab with rice and veggies. I just couldn't pass up some fresh crab and it was so much crab for $20! (market price) My coworker and I decided, approximately half way through our meal, that we should have split an order. I gave it my best effort but left a bit behind, along with some of the rice and veggies -- both sides were piled high onto the plate and tasty. I did eat all of the tomato salad that was fresh and yummy. I would go back for the nice views, friendly service and delicious food. Next time I will ask my dining companion(s) to share dishes so I can enjoy tastes of a few different things. I recommend that you do the same.

Despite my girlfriend wanting to go to old fishermans grotto, I chose this place. No wait time. The waiter was great. Clam chowder was good and also the crab Alfredo. I would definitely come here again.
(5)Dre J.
Clam chowder is consistently great (and includes subtle amounts of bacon. Mmmm!) but the Scampi Monterey has changed my life. I'm not one to order shrimp dishes but I'm glad I tried this one. Generous portion, rich flavor, and fresh infredients. Oh, and $2.99 margaritas!
(4)Gaby V.
My bf and my 1 ur old went to try it out, we regretted it. We were seated right away server asked what drinks we wanted and our drinks arrived quickly. We waited 15 mins and the waiter finally asked what we wanted to order. My bf ordered fried calamari and shrimp and fried shrimp, and I ordered clam chowder. It was alright. I deftly had better. Another couple sat on a table behind us, were being attended right away and their food was out fast as well. Seemed like our waiter was too busy with them because he never cared to see if we wanted more bread or refills. Never coming back!!

Margaritas, calamari and chowder bowls were very good. No complaints here. Service was fast and friendly.

Another spot that my bf and I visited during our trip to Monterey. We chose this eatery simply because it was Italian and because it was on the pier. We came to Abalonetti at 2:30pm on a Wednesday. However there were several parties. We were seated outside and had a nice view of the sea and the activity on the boardwalk. We didn't wait too long for our orders, and the bread came out timely. It was nice and warm and fresh out of the oven. I ordered the Sand Dabs and my bf order the alfredo with chicken. Both dishes were excellent. I think for the price of the meal it was as good as it gets.,
(4)Ellen C.
We came here to enjoy some happy hour specials, which included a margarita and cheap oysters. The bartender was the one to serve us, but he wasn't friendly at all. The margaritas were from a box (no WONDER they were so cheap). And the oysters were large but so-so tasting. Hopefully the service is better when you order food, and hopefully the food itself is great. Will not be returning here to try it though.

Never have I been treated so rudely. We were seated on the patio and when the waitress took our alcohol order she asked if we were ready to order our food, we said no thank you we are just drinking today! She then proceeded snap the menus from the table and tell us that this section was reserved for people ordering food and that the bartender would be bring out our drinks. Before we could say we will order something she was gone. She was very condensending and rude! What she doesn't know is we are topself drinkers and our alcohol is always more than our food! So the bartender dropped our drinks and we never saw anyone again...had to go find someone to pay out bill. We would have had more if ANYONE would have waited on us.
(1)Amy O.
Great lunch with the kiddos on the patio. One of the better places on the wharf.
(4)Jackie G.
Always our go to place:)
(5)Briana P.
We always go here when we are in town. By far the best place on the warf. Their san dab sandwhich is amazing. Their chippino is so... good. Then there is there clam chowder. So yummy!
(5)Monica H.
A favorite since we discovered it a few years ago. Great view of the bay, relaxing, yet fun. Cute little bar. My favorite thing here, the Antipasto platter, the half order is HUGE, plenty for two, a real value and DELICIOUS. Also had raw oysters, fried sardines. Had a few beers and watched the Giants game. The bartender looked a bit rode-hard-and-put-away-wet after the long Labor Day weekend, but he was still attentive and tried to eek out a smile. The wait staff was very nice, they seems to like working with each other which is a good sign of a well run business. This is a must stop by, whenever I'm in Monterey.
(4)Justin C.
Went to their attached cafe. Total rip off. Ordered fish and chips. $10 for two tiny pieces of fish and like 20 fries. Looked nothing like the picture. When mentioned to the cashier, she didn't seem to care at all. Do not go here.

We've been here twice now and both times have enjoyed the food. Wait staff could have been a little friendlier but made sure we had refills and took care of our needs. We ordered: Clam chowder in a bread bowl (good, nice, thick and creamy) Fried shrimp (very good, came with lots of fries) No complaints will be back.
(4)Sarah L.
Great service. Clean. They were so kind to us even though we came in right before close. The baha calamari is the best!
(5)Dolores B.
Had dinner at Abalonetti Seafood on Sunday night. The hawker outside was charismatic and convinced us to try. Once inside we were seated quickly and our waitress was attentive but rehearsed. The food was just OK. The calamari appetizer was greasy and over salted. The caprese salad was one giant hot house tomato cut in half, slathered with hunks of mozzarella, something green, canned black olives and anchovies (yuk). Very difficult to cut and eat plus the tomato was tough and tasteless. The artichoke and prosciutto pizza was not good. Thin slices of salty ham passed off as prosciutto were clumped together in balls on the pizza instead of being evenly spread around. The artichokes were so garlic filled that was all I could taste and the crust was tough and tasteless. I guess it is my bad for eating at a tourist spot but I wanted to give it a try. Lesson learned.

Best place on the Warf! We've been to most on the Warf and this is the cleanest and freshest. The staff is super friendly and the food rocks. Go here before you try the others.

Service sucked. Went through half the appetizer before I got any silverware and napkins! Food wasn't good either.

This place falls some place between "not good" and "aunt Bertha who lost her taste buds years ago can do a better job flavoring food". I ordered the burger. The only flavor the meat had came from the blackened/burned pieces of meat (I ordered the burger medium by the way). The bread was old, hard, and had way too much butter on it. The tomatoes looked old and dry (the edges had already started to turn). The onion was so old you could squeeze the juice directly into your eyes and not feel a thing. The fries were good but nothing to write home about. The complementary bread was good. Really good. It was fresh, tasty and warm. I ended up using that for my burger instead of the breack (see how I did that? combined bread and brick into one word! Clever, I know) they served it on The service was OK but impersonal. It's one of those places where they come by to ask if you need anything but are already walking away before you've had a chance to answer. Overall, would not come back.

Abalonetti is a step above decent IMO. Located at Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, this place is easy to miss as it's further down the beaten path. If you happen to make it passed the number of tasty-looking eateries, Abalonetti is a good option. They have outdoor casual seating if the weather is nice and big windows inside so you can look out onto the bay. They have $3 mango margaritas. And if your family likes alcohol as much as mine does, you'll have a great time here. Their bread they serve is fresh and the service was excellent. Calamari sandwich was delish, but I wish they gave me more fries. The clam chowder was amazing...creamy goodness that will keep your arteries thirsting for more. They have a huge menu, so you're likely to find something you like.

We have dinner at Abalonetti whenever in Monterey. This time we planned on trying someplace new to us and to help make a decision we tried the clam chowder samples offered on fisherman's wharf. Hands down, Abalonetti's was the best. Decision made, stay with tried and true and we were not disappointed. They are known for their calamari and deservedly. I was first introduced to calamari many years ago (at a restaurant in Sacramento) by my then boyfriend (now husband) and I wondered what all the fuss was about, it was chewy and tasteless. Then I had it at Abalonetti. WOW. The special that day was calamari served five ways. I couldn't decide which of the five I liked best, they were all wonderful. And they are coming up with new ways to serve calamari. On this visit I tried their barbecued calamari. Another winning choice. Service has always been attentive. Hope to see you again soon Abalonetti.

Oh My GOD! We had a FANTASTIC dinner this past weekend during our stay in Monetery. Our server, Joe, was the best! He has a great way of interacting with his customers and true passion for the business. His knowledge of the wine pairings was fantastic, and he kept us entertained throughout our visit. Oh, yes, and the food was excellent! We certainly will be regulars at Abalonetti's!

Discovered Abalonetti's on my 1st visit to Monterey in the mid-70's with Marcia - been bringing friends and family ever since - one reason - the Calamari - more specifically the "Marty Special" a succulent eggplant-calamari-parmesan delight - never disappoints. I'm not one for tomato sauce based dishes, so you have to trust me, this is good stuff! Service is always adequate & never rushed or rude, host friendly, accommodating us taking fotos of our party every time we ask... Love the turquoise blue color scheme, decor & open style dining room, the bay view and platters of roasted veggies in kitchen area... I've never liked mango however last visit my Daughter had the Mango Chi Chi and gave me sip- it was so delicious should have ordered one -in fact craving one now... Happy to see that there is still an organ grinder w/ monkey at the front of the wharf although the grinder guy from memory was young & gorgeous...I don't think this guy is the same guy... wonder what ever happened to him?
(5)Tania O.
We were looking forward to a nice meal with the family on Fisherman's Wharf. But this place was disappointing. The service was EXTREMELY slow. And the place was only half full. The food was nothing special. Very bland. We won't be coming here again anytime soon. Next time we'll try one of the other restaurants nearby instead.
(1)Steve L.
This has long been my favorite place on the wharf, with excellent fried calamari and several other reliable takes on squid. A poster in the men's room informs you that the name Abalonetti is, in fact, an old school reference to a time when squid was prepared so much like abalone that it was difficult to tell the difference. This joint was a practitioner. It has history, and it shows. We also had steamed clams, clam chowder, and oysters Rockefeller. Those dishes were good to mediocre. Best deal of the night was the $2.99 margarita - small but delicious.

I was very pleased with choosing this place to have dinner. From the looks of the menu it is very extensive, but if you stay on the "staple" items I think you will leave pleasantly full. My fiance and I came here for dinner on a Saturday night, the one thing that kind of sucked was you have to pay for parking unless you want to walk a long distance or you know some side street that no one else knows about. The place was not too full and not very loud. We ordered the BAJA calamari, a sourdough bread bowl clam chowder, and an order of steamed mussels/clams *you can order half and half. Everything was amazing including the warm bread they put on the table. The portion sizes were extremely generous and service was fantastic. My fiance had 2 refills on her diet coke within 10 mintunes, he was on it! We also took home enough food for an awesome midnight snack. Lastly, we sat right next to a window which was great, would have been better during the day though or before the sunsets... I would definitely comeback. P.S. the couple next to us ordered a whole crab each and got these embarrassing yet kinda cute bibs, next time I want to try it out ;)
(4)Kristen W.
Loved this place! The manager gave us free glasses of wine & an appetizer because we didn't get a good table by the window. Very nice of him. My bf got the calamari as an appetizer & loved it. I don't eat seafood so I got the Parmesan lemon crusted chicken. It was one of the best dishes I have ever had. Loved the sauce & the mashed potatoes. Would def come here again when we're back in Monterey. Great service which is hard to find nowadays!
(5)Kay Y.
Get your chowda here! (Pushes it in yo' face.) 3-1/2 stars. Take a walk down Harry Potter's clam chowder alley. The competition is fierce with the hawker's trying to pull you in. Due to this most chowder's here are delicious. Monterey Abalone Co., located on the next wharf over, recommended Abalonetti as a place to try fresh abalone. They would know as they are their supplier. If your abalone tastes fishy, then it is old, is what we learned from our visit. So we hoofed it over to Abalonetti to try the Abalone BLT with an $18 price tag; however, due to the overwhelming flavor of the bacon, you can't really taste the abalone. Their clam chowder is very good though as well as the flash fried calamari and fries. The Bloody Marys were also very good. I'd come back for the chowder, calamari and BMs. Squirrely service.

First off...we had reservations made for 5pm. We got there early about 3:45pm. I asked the hostess if we could possibly get in earlier, since they didnt look busy at all....maybe at the most there were 4 tables inside with people being served and possible another 4 tables outside in the patio. The hostess said no because the kitchen had fallen behind on completing food orders and her manager had told her to not let anyone else in. Weird!! We couldnt sit at the bar because it was full and they wouldnt even just let us sit on the patio to wait. So she said we could come back about 4pm to try to get seated.....Fine. Sat around the wharf waiting for after 4pm. By 4:15pm we go back, hostess is gone and we were left standing in front of the restaurant waiting for someone to greet us. I finally stepped inside and waited another 2 minutes before what i'm assuming is the manager to greet me. I told him that we had reservations but were hoping to be seated earlier....Mind you the restaurant was still not busy. He looked at the list and flat out said no. What kind of ridiculous customer service is that. There's barely anyone eating in the restaurant and he couldnt even accommodate a party of 5. I've never been treated so horribly at a restaurant before.....especially since they were not busy. The worse part was his attitude...i mean come on... you are in hospitality...you should have a nicer demeanor even if you couldnt get us seated. In the end...we decided to cancel the crap reservation and go down the wharf to eat at Rappa's (which had us seated within moments of asking for a table). I would never recommend or even try to go back to Abalonetti's. They are rude and frankly dont seem to care too much of whether they have business or not.

I Ordered the popcorn shrimp and waited to get a seat for about ten minutes. Food was good and it's an excellent place to grab a quick snack. Prices are reasonable too.
