Yummy food with lots of variety. A big fan of their buffet. Tasty and authentic!

I don't even want to give a single star but it is mandatory to give at least single star so i am giving this star. That was a Monday long weekend where we were expected at least some specials but that was completely opposite when we ordered for DOSA'S the waiter served the other tables dosa's in front of us. when we asked about this he was little rude with us then when we went to the manager he says server is new to job sir. and the manager is such a big a****** he started yelled on us this was a worst experience i ever had in my life.

Dirty dingy interiors, with smelly carpets, We ordered the Mysore bonda ,it came out all undone and raw, we sent it back. Food was below mediocre.. Bad service. For us it was a ' never again' kinda restaurant

Don't order DOSA here. It is not about the taste.(cause we didn't eat it..) They took 45 minutes and they said DOSA will take time after 45 minutes waiting. And after few minutes they said the cook isn't available. Thank you Management for your kind hospitality

This restaurant is going crazy. Please stop eating here. Its very unhealthy, in-proper and unhygienic to eat here. Unfortunately we took a Veg-Biryani To Go yesterday and it did upset my stomach and friends. They are serving food which is very old, stale and bad in taste.

Awesome food! Being a foodie and a critic, I still have nothing bad to mention. Not even a single item in the buffet was bad. Each one tasted authentic and delicious. You can smell INDIA in the food here.

  • Bharghava C.

This is the worst Indian restaurant I have been to. We went for buffet. Food is not at all tasty. None of items are even average. I don't generally waste food but was forced to do so. Most simple items are also not tasty. Customer service makes the experience even worst. They placed the check on table while we are eating.

Food is good but you guys need to train you're staff, especially old bald guy, he doesn't know how to talk to customers.

The place was good. It was nice and neat. Not very crowdy... Plus a verity of food for buffet... I like the chicken 65 as well as dessert. It was a wonderful experience and im looking forward to go there again. Good place for lunch, strongly recommended!

If you like spicy Indian biryani, then this is your place. I regularly take a to go because me and my friends love the egg and mutton biryani at this place. In a cost perspective it is a little pricey, but I love the size and quality of the helping. I am giving it a three rating because I didn't like the experience when I went to have food in the restaurant. After finishing our dinner, we asked for to go boxes from an aged waiter. He gave us a small box, after which we asked for a bigger one. He actually told us that we can fit all our left over food in that (mind you, there was a lot. Their biryani servings are huge). We requested a bigger box again, and he got us one after thinking about it for a full minute (talk about cost cutting). That left a bad taste in our mouths, after which I never went to sit in the restaurant again.

As I sit here softly cradling my food baby, my mind recalleth the glorious meal upon which we supped this afternoon. Many an Indian friend had spoken sweetly of Dosa Bawarchi, but I in my stiffneckedness had until now abstained due to the lackluster reviews found herewithin. Now I am not known to enjoy buffets. Something about perpetually reheated food that slowly develops a crusty film nauseates me. Repels me. But, I checked my prejudices at the door of this Saturday buffet and grabbed a sinisterly hot plate, passing it from hand to hand in true hot potato fashion. Now I'm not sure if this was a fluke, but I know my Indian food, and boy this shit was good. It seemed like everything was yummy, from the Goat Dum Biryani to the Chili Chicken, from the Sambhar to the Beerakaya Pappu and the Paneer Kadai, from the Fish 65 to the Chicken Tikka Masala. The dishes ranged from savory to sweet, from mild to deafeningly spicy in true Tamil fashion (the main chef is from Chennai, which explains my obsession). Even the raita was great. They kept bringing over free naan & dosa, which, while maybe not award-winning, were both above average considering the situation. The naan was thin but soft, and the dosa wasn't overly sour as it can be. There wasn't one thing on my plate that made me think, "Let's skip that on rounds 2, 3, 4, etc." I just kept going back for more until I was one slovenly obese pig. But then, holy crap was that Banana Custard amazing! I was already so stuffed that I had a few turtle-heads involuntarily poking out, but I soldiered on with multiple bowls of this sugary goodness. Big picture: Think banana cream pie. Now remove the crust. Shut up and take my money! I may have felt differently had I ordered à la carte, as being stuck with just a few items forces sober self-introspection, but I'll leave that up to a well-earned repeat visit. You can't always believe the Yelping gringo masses. You just need to trust your heart. And this review.

Today I hate that manager staring us while having our buffet he wonders when are these guys are going to leave. This is an insult for the customers please change his attitude idiot...

I ordered kadaai paneer and garlic naan over the phone for pickup. It was hot, fresh and delicious. Got it within 20 mins. Surprisingly quantity was also good. Overall awesome food and service.

This is an Indian buffet place so we stopped for a quick lunch before our appointment. It supposedly opens at 11:30AM for lunch. We were there at maybe 11:33AM. A table was already occupied by then. We were seated by the manager and then proceeded to serve ourselves.. We went to the soup station only to find it not ready yet.. Then proceeded to get main course, half the dishes were not brought out yet.. We served the chicken curry and proceeded to our table and waited for another 10 mins but no sign of the naan or dosa... When we asked abt it the manager said it will take time as the skillet wasn't hot yet.. In maybe another 5 mins the naan and dosas arrived. When we proceeded to get another helping we saw the manager also enjoying his meal. That is totally fine until he bought his used plate for a second helping... He kept doing that a couple of times... Uhaaaa... Isn't that some sorta health code violation??? Not coming back here anytime soon..

Horrible chilly chicken. Dont ever try it here. Chicken was so hard and the spices were inappropriately added.

Bad food quality and flies around eating area near restroom Buffett is ok But punjabi curries are pathetic

  • Bakasura N.

Very bad experience. A/C was not working and we asked for table change because it was too hot they didn't even bother taking a request. Food came like 30 mins after we have ordered and check took like 15 min. They are very mean with customers. Please avoid there are lot more places instead.

  • Sharan N.

This place used to be good two years back but not its a pure let down. The Thursday tiffin buffets are no more good. None of the condiments is worth spending your money. The Thalapakattu Biryani is so bland these days. The Vijayawada biryani is nothing but color rich chicken. The color wouldn't go of your hands for two days. It makes you regret for ordering it. The most important is an elderly bald guy who is the most upsetting part of the restaurant. I will suggest the person who runs this place to throw that person out to make his place better. This guy is so rude and once told me not to eat there and leave. Who would say that . Creepy bad guy.

  • Pravina H.

You should try Dosa Bawarchi's dinner buffet. Their paneer butter masala is very good. Caveat: Their food is spicy to the normal person. Overall, Dosa Bawarchi is a fantastic restaurant to go to when you have a craving for spicy Indian food.

  • Devika A.

Takes forever to bring out food. Employees do not check with patrons to see if they need anything. We ordered the food before everyone else that walked in and got our food last. Proper staff training is definitely needed. Food is tasty but I'm concerned that it may not be prepared hygienically.

    (1)
  • Sweet G.

wish I could give negative stars! Like seriously, how rude are the staff especially the old gentleman who took our order and gave us the bill. How rude was he! First of all, he never bothered to welcome us, secondly took the order from us in a very rude way and thirdly just kept the bill on the table. The place was stingy maybe because we sat next to the washroom. But will never ever go back here!

  • Jayadeep Y.

The place is one of the best for Indian Food. We ordered Vijayawada Chicken Biryani ( also called as special chicken biryani) and it took 15 mins for them to prepare it. It's was served fresh and hot. We ordered for to go and the service was good. The person in the counter is too quick and active. The biryani was little expensive when compared to other Indian restaurants it's $14.12 with tax. But it's worth trying it. The taste is spicy than I actually thought and its filling.

  • Chaitanya K.

Horrible food. We were sick for a couple of days after eating here. Truly terrible.. dirty, smelly, unclean place. All we ate was idli and dosa, and that did us in. Sambar was just oily, yellow-colored water, almost no lentils in it. chutneys tasted good, but clearly weren't 'right', in retrospect.

    (1)
  • Samantha K.

We enjoyed goat biryani - just the right amount of spice and heat. So good. And left overs as the portions are generous. Service is friendly and fast.

    (4)
  • Barnali D.

This place was a nice find! The food was quite good and the service was reasonably polite and efficient (though it certainly could have been more attentive and warm). We enjoyed the kal dosa (2 thicker than normal dosas) served with chicken curry, masala dosa served with sambar and chutneys (our one standard dish), and kotthu porotta (chopped Indian bread stir fried with chicken and spices). It was neat to try a few less common Indian dishes. Overall, a nice spot we will consider returning to the next time we're in the area.

    (4)
  • jas k.

There is nothing special or even decent about the food they have here. The sambar here is anything but truly sambar. They give you something with cut veggies trying to pass it as sambar. The chutneys are best if not served to customers because anyone that has had chutneys here for the first time ever will never try or order chutneys ever again. The dosa's r just ok. V will never order or get any form food from here. A butter toast at home will be much more tastier!!

    (1)
  • Neero D.

Butter chicken is amazing . not too spicy . dosa is great, but not many options.

    (4)
  • Sheetal P.

The service is really slow! We came here twice and both times got the wrong order. We were also refused tea last time. Choose some other place if possible.

    (1)
  • Ameya K.

We liked the food for the first time but just like any other Indian restaurant, it's become horrible. Extremely slow service. 30mins for dosa that too turned out to be wrong. Just avoid.

    (1)
  • Sàgar C.

Watch out for MOSQUITOES! You might find them in your glass of water, on your plates, in your food or even in your nostrils. They dwell there, and there is hardly you could do anything about it, Pathetic! The food service is amazingly sluggish, even though you might find a table quickly don't expect to get your order at least for the next 30-40 mins. OK I went there on a Saturday eve, but still! Finally the food! OK, to be honest Punugulu was good, but then the curries we ordered later were sweeter than a Nutella! The quantities were good, but that does not compensate for the quality. We ordered the simplest staple food item to help with the curries, Rice, and that took another 20+ minutes to arrive. The rice was certainly not fresh, may be a day older as the rice grains were dry. I feel bad when Indian restaurants like these fail to serve quality in a foreign land.

Sooo this is my first time trying Indian food. The food is great, hands down. Very authentic and exotic. The bread that they brought you to the table is like tortilla but better. And there's another type of pancake that's sooo good that I can just eat it alone. It was so crispy and kinda sweet, cause I think the lady who handmade the pancake put coconut in it. I like that they have a separate vegetarian table where has great tofu and rice noodle. But.. The food is very heavy but definitely flavorful. A little greasy and salty, but of course good occasionally. Staff is very friendly and nice. My bf's mom asked about the grispy rice snack that's on the dessert table with whole bunch of different toppings. The owner explained it to her patiently, and btw that's an Indian street food, goes great with the yogurt. The shop is very big cause it does get crowded, parking is very easy. I'm the type of person who's very interested in different cultures along with theor food. So I'm glad that I went here. One star off because our weak stomachs..definitely eat tums lol.

    (4)
  • S K.

definite 3.5 just for the sheer amount of variety in the buffet. Most of the items taste good too, but I am not a fan of big buffets where everything tastes bland and some of the food is being heated too long. Please try if you want to sample many things with South Indian flavors

    (3)
  • Rohit V.

Got rotten veg biryani from this place... Thrown in the dustbins... Called Dosa Bawarchi and told them also... But they don't even have curtsey to accept it... !!!!

  • Padmanabha Praveen C.

The service is really poor. They act so cheap. We went to restaurant and sat for the buffet and were about to start, there is more 30 mins for the closing time. The waiter came and asked us to eat fast or take all the items now itself as they will remove the items from the racks. The tone is also very rude. As if he is serving the food for free. Two of my friends arrived late and then, he again came and said they should also get their plates else not to have the food. My friends felt bad and din't have their lunch. They sat for few mins talking with us and left the place. They are so blind that they billed for 6 instead of 4 people. When I again told them that they dint eat as the restaurant closes in next 20 mins. Then they cancelled the transaction. They are only concerned about bill but not the customer service.

It was sunday night dinner with my friends when I first moved to San Jose Area. The restaurant had only a few customers there. We ordered Egg Biryani and Chicken Biryani. Egg Biryani was too spicy, we have tasted a lot of Indian food before, but this one was exceptionally spicy and not so much flavored. Chicken Biryani was more good than Egg Biryani. Their service was just okay, as like any other Indian Restaurants where servers don't smile and looks more sulking all the time.

  • Vikrant S.

Pathetic food specially there Biryani ..always they serve, the one they prepared the other day one time last week we order 4 out of which 3 are so, we cant able to ate and the foul smell is coming. Also I am not impressed the way, the guy on the main counter talks so much but on the quality of food this restaurant is pathetic.

  • Priyanka R.

I have had the lunch buffet here and have had entrees too. The preparation of food is not consistent in taste, if you go back the second day and eat the same food, they can get it wrong. Some of the chicken based food can be very spicy at times. The dosa that comes with the buffet is usually not hot or crispy when they serve it, dosas taste better when served hot. Was not very impressed with the preparation of punjabi daal (I thought there was a bit too much of garlic in it) or the matar paneer. I would not go back to this place, there are better places to eat around in Milpitas.

    (2)
  • Praveen Kumar R.

I like the food in this place very much. But I was never satisfied with customer service. I would like to give 4 star for the taste and quality of food. I usually eat spicy food, hence I like the food here. The spice level of food is high. Once I waited for around 45 mins to get my food. Their explanation is if we are hungry, we feel wait tine is longer than it is. But my wrist watch is not hungry . it shows wait time properly. Next time they took wrong order and they didn't accept to replace it.

  • Bhagirath G.

If I could give a negative review, I would. There were so many things wrong about my experience today. It was almost like the owner/main server was trying to commit as many health violations and bad service decisions as he could in the short time I was there. To start with, this place has a buffet and not only were they not ready for customers at 5 mins past their opening time, the attitude of the person was abysmal. He didn't even apologize for the items not being out. I asked for dosa and he brought out naan. When I asked for dosa, he said the grill isn't hot enough yet. If they aren't ready, they shouldn't be open. Next, I saw another customer take his half eaten plate to get a refill. That you may not be able to control. But what I saw after was inexcusable. The owner/main server brought out a half eaten plate to the buffet and helped himself. He was even hewing food as I stood in line behind him. That has got to be a major health code violation. I was grossed out and left shortly after. I am never going back.

I was here for buffet on Saturday. There were many varieties in veg and non veg. It's a feast to have buffet when you r really hungry and craving for Indian food. I just love this place.

I have been here about three times in the last few weeks. My boyfriend first tried it because it is close to our house, but we've returned because we like it so much. The host is warm and welcoming and I am always glad to see him when we arrive. Each time we have gone it has been for the lunch-time buffet, even though I am not a huge buffet fan, generally speaking. In this case, the food is always fresh and spicy, and there is a nice variety, with about four meat options and about five or six vegetarian options. It's nice too that the meat and vegetarian offerings are on separate tables. It seems like they always have chiken tikka masala, paneer in butter sauce (the same thing, I think), vegetable biryani, and chicken biryani. The tikka masala/butter sauce is always tasty, creamy, and enjoyable! I love this stuff, but I think the highlight of Dosa Bawarchi's buffet are the vegetable dishes. Today, for example I went back for seconds on the aloo gobi which was tangy and cooked just right -- not over-cooked or soggy. I also really loved the mixed vegetable jalfrezi, which was also tangy, a bit sweet, but still spicy and full of flavor. They also had something made with beets, which was an unexpected surprise. I didn't write the name of it down, but it was rich and a nice filling with the dosa pancakes they bring (along with naan) to every table. Last week, it was the potato filling for dosas that captured me. They also offer a huge variety of spicy chutneys, which I must confess, I have not ventured to explore yet. The desserts are good, and also varied. I have enjoyed plain halwa, pistachio halwa, and gulab jamun. Plus, they have fresh salad fixings and fresh fruit to cool off your palate. And how can I forget... the most simple, basic, and yet sublime dal andhrah which was on the vegetarian table today. That was so wonderful. The only negatives are the lack of tamarind chutney, and the sweet lassi I had was only adequate. We will keep going back.

Try the Vijayawada chicket biryani, enjoyed it 2 out of 3 times. The other dishes I tried here never failed to disappoint me. The ambience is decent with good service.

  • Shwetha R.

Recently visited this place & loved the food here. I ordered gobi Manchurian & masala Dosa, for a person on diet the food was well balanced on the masala and the amount of oil used. Would surely come back to have more varieties :)

  • Prateek G.

I really like their buffets, it just amazingly tasty! Lots of choices for vegetarians as well. Authentic style South Indian food with lots flavors and spices. They also have catering and banquet hall available, which I will definitely try for some future events. They have good size parking lot, and located at a very convenient locations. I am absolutely going back for their lunch buffet!

    (4)
  • Karthik B.

They have the worst To-go service ever... People who answer the call hang up on you even before you try to complete ur order... thats just the start.... you will have to call them back multiple times to make sure they got the order right... and you end up finding something is missing when you actually pick it up... or at the least you will have some wrong item in the order... The first day i've been there they have provided good service and made me feel I found a good restaurant... the next time I visited there i have seen a sudden drop in the quality of service... and the taste of the food as well.. I dint know who told them that the biryani would taste good with some "ghee" in it... but kinda influenced them a lot... i found chicken biryani full of ghee and no chicken in it... :( I can keep on going with my bad experiences with this place.. I hate it for the fact that even the most underrated restaurants deserve to have more business than these guys do...

  • Margo G.

Lunch buffet. The good: The spice level was right on. Geared more for traditional tastes and not "Americanized." The bad: The line gets really long. The naan is on the buffet line. All the pieces I got tasted reheated and stale and just not good. The ugly: The layout is just horrible. They seat everyone in the back room 1st but then the buffet line blocks the entrance to the back room. They should really put the line against the back wall as not to interfere with people going in and out of their dining area. There are bugs. They should invest in fly paper or something. Doubt I will be back. There are way too many Indian lunch buffet places that are better.

  • Srikanth N.

Pros: Food is great. Typical South Indian food with good spice levels. Vijayawada Biriyani is a must try. Cons: Bad service. They take very long time to get the order and serve it. You should be prepared to spend atleast 1.5 to 2 hours to dine there. Buffets are not so great. Bottom-line: Good for take-away. Dining needs a lot of patience.

Yesterday I went there for the first time. It used to be a Korean place(Not sure!!!) . The food is good. Specially the dum chicken Biryani is yummy. The portions are huge. I also tried butter milk. It was good too., but it was really spicy. If you donot like that spicy go for salted lassi. The service was good. and they have good cutlery too. i will definitely go back there.

The worst service .... Food is stale.... Had been here twice and disappointed. I would recommend not to visit this restaurant anytime.

I went for the buffet lunch on a Saturday with a bunch of friends and the place was packed! Seems to be a hit for all kinds of tastebuds already. There was a lot of variety, their biryani was awesome, fish curry delicious and okra made to perfection. Dessert was so good that all of us took seconds (Shahi Tukda) We left feeling satiated to say the least. I'm going to be visiting this place quite often, great place for a much needed Indian restaurant in this part of town.

  • Sandesh K.

The place looks really huge from outside [they do have a lot of sitting room, supporting small or big crowds] and clean. Being named Dosa Bawarchi, I was expecting some southern style Dosa's but was greatly disappointed. A couple of us came here for a Friday buffet and found the only interesting thing was they had many varieties of pickles, including chicken/lamb pickle. appetizers and main courses were as usual, nothing extra ordinary, but desserts were good. [No complains there!!!] As we came here for a buffet, we didn't get a chance to check out their menu [assuming they had different dosa's available], perhaps next time!! PS: the serving area is just one [for public and large crowds] so if you end up going there when a big group is dining, you would get stuck waiting in line for minutes to get ya food !! Just another Indian place to eat @ in the Bay...

I happened to visit couple of times recently. One day for lunch buffet, second time for a Dinner a la carte and third time for a party. Lunch buffet was good, food was spicier than i expected. I like the small dosa and nans delivered fresh to the table. Also the arrangement was better in the sense, veg and non veg items were arranged in separate areas. Second time it was a dinner. Chicken 65 was superb and loved the chicken tikka masala and kadai chicken. The restaurant guys recommended stuffed Brinjol, but i did not like it at all, may be i am not from Andhra. This time also food was a bit spicier, but tasted bit sweeter too, may be, because, i asked to make it less spicy based on my previous experience and the only way they know to make it less spicier was by adding some sweetness to it. Third time it was for a party, the hall on the side was quite large and service was good. One employee was always available to help. I felt The quality of food served during the party was different from the one we normally get in restaurant, nevertheless it was good. They had meduvada as starter and it was great, much better than the ones i had from other indian restaurants. I have to try their dosa buffet and South Indian buffet one day, the problem is Tuesdays and Thursdays are not the normal days we go out for dinner. I wish instead they have this on Friday or Saturday. Will i go again, yes, Friday noons are very crowded. One last thing, they have ample parking,

Good food. Kadhai Paneer was good. Paneer was soft & the quantity was more than I expected. Garlic naan was fresh Mysore Masala dosa was ok. tasted more like a masala Dosa. Sambar was awesome. -1 for the service. It was a bit slow. It was closing time and the waiter asked us to pay while we were still eating. He asked to sign on the receipt while we were eating which was rude. The Sikh Sardarji at the cash counter was very humble, warm and welcoming. Liked his hospitality.

It's been a while since I last visited because the food back then was truly reflective of the 3 star rating they own. I decided to give it another try tonight and was pleasantly surprised to find the taste of the food has gone way up! We had the plain dosa, goat briyani(fantastic), butter chicken, palak paneer, lamb roganjosh and a garlic naan. It was one of those rare occasions where everything was simply excellent! Definitely coming back more often and glad to have regained a usual spot for indian food that is close to where I am.

Worst service for dosa dinner buffet.chutneys and dosas were good, but the service staff, doesnt have any courtesy, except for the lady who clears the tables. We ordered dosas and waited for 1 hour and no body served our order and we left, we informed the front desk lady and the server no body even reacted nor cared to apologize.I am giving 2 stars just as the food was okay

  • Deepak L.

We ordered multiple dishes and all of these (idly, kothu patatha, ceylon paratha, butter naans, rasam, sambhar) turned out really bad and extremely oily. The biriyani, keema and the fried fish/chicken were good. Other people seemed to be enjoying their dosas. Stay away dishes which are not recommended by others.

  • Senthil V.

This place was like an oasis in a desert during our 1st visit but slowly deteriorated on each visit. The dosa is usually excellent but the sambar that came along (during my last visit) was a disaster. Wonder how a restaurant can slide outta my top 10 list so quickly between 3 visits....

Honestly, the Chinese section was better than the Indian. Most disappointing part was finding ants in the restroom. The music was low and sounded old, they had fairly recent music but the speakers were horrible. Maybe their other meats are better which is why other reviewers say it's a great place but the chicken was very bad. Funny thing is, it looks nice from the outside.

    (2)
  • Philip T.

This is a fairly new place. Efficient service, the food is excellent, and nice ambience. Buffet never fails to surprise, they always have something special like fish 65, lollipop chicken. Dum biriyani rocks. I can vouch for the non-vegetarian items ;-)

This is for the party hall they have in Milpitas. They will squeeze as much as they can from you, beware. If you plan to use their party hall. 1. Get everything in written format about the menu items, number of people, pricing 2. Make sure you get a receipt for the amount you paid 3. Make sure you have evidence of bad service you experienced. 4. Ask for the left over food for which you already paid for. There are cases filed against them with Department of Homeland Security (for willfully employing illegal workers) and California board of equalization (for avoiding sales tax) If you book a party hall with them and do not have a receipt and/or served by an illegal worker, you could be part of an investigation by law enforcement agencies AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Limited buffet items. Food was a bit salty. Service was good. Hard to find location.

Good Indian food. Missed one star from me because they definitely need to improve on their service. They are slow for ala carte services. Most of the times they forget to give you plates. Back to good points- Biryani is definitely the best item they have. Other items are also good including veg items which I have tried. vegetarians at times complain about the veggie stuff they have in their buffet..which i find strange. As i do not think any other buffet place has any thing better to offer (exclude pure veg restaurants).

A lesson on how to NOT run a restaurant: 1. Customer walks in at 8.30 PM on a weekday. Seat him at a table and forget about him. He googles your restaurant after 15 mins and calls your phone to ask you to take the order at his table. 2.You finally send a waiter to your table who makes pit stops around the dining room before stopping at your table and is totally unapologetic about it. 3.Hey, its dosa bawarchi right.. Why not order dosa? Dosa comes out. But hey where is the sambar and chutney. Turns out they send it after you finish a portion of your dosa. 4. Ok so the dosa tastes good. So you are hungry and order another dosa. Same issue with a twist. Sambhar is almost over but hey its only around 9. So what do you do? Add water to the sambar and do some cost cutting. And this ladies and gentlemen is how you do not run a restaurant. True Story!

We went there last Friday with a bunch of friends and quite honestly didnt know of this place before then. The place is simple but spacious and our initial impression was good. When we looked at the menu - OMG they had everything. Usually I am a little weary of places that serve everything as that means that nothing is exceptional but I was surprised. We ordered Chilli Idli and it was awesome and the best part was the sambhar. For me the ultimate test for any South Indian restaurant is with quality of Sambhar and these guys nailed it. My wife ordered the egg noodles and even that was fabulous. Serving size is large so we could have done way with few less orders but we ended up finishing most of what we ordered. The only reason this place gets 4 stars and not 5 is because they did miss a couple of drinks that people on our table ordered but the dude spoke to us so nicely that I wasnt upset at all - I mean if you really miss something you would have remembered to ask for it when you missed it right? We will definitely go there again next time we are in a mood for - Dosa, Chinese or North Indian :-)

Excellent food and mouth watering taste. We simply love this place and kicking my shoes for not finding this place until last month (Jan 2012). Thursday buffet is unbeatable, with all kinds of chutneys around I felt that the indian popular chutneys - coconut, Peanut and tomatto were out of place. I liked Telangana lamb Biryani, it was their special item. I loved mutton Thali, well worth the money and my wife loved vegetarial Thali, to our surprise, my 6 year old son finished his Cheese Dosa in a few mins, normally it takes a long time and a lot of effort from us to make him eat the food. You can eat Sambar as a soup; it is very delicious. I am writing this review after 3 visits just to be sure that it wasn't a fluke the first two times to give such high ratings. I never saw my wife so happy and she said it was the best Indian food she ever ate in US. You just can't beat that.

Went there for dinner, they have a decent ambiance and unlike many restaurants, it doesn't feel cramped for space. The food was very good, Shahi Paneer was very tasty, so was the Dosa, veg fried rice was just about Ok. We plan on going back there to taste other items on their menu. Their portion sizes were larger than expected. Overall, we were impressed.

This place gets pretty crowded so go early. Customer service is below average although some dishes taste good. Nothing much to rave about. Other Indian places in the vicinity beat this place hands down, although this place is open longer.

First time there to enjoy the Thursday night dosa buffet. The owner was attentive, polite and chatted with us for a bit. The food was delicious, dahi vada were quite good, as were the dosas. What makes this spot unique is that the have a large variety of chutneys (mint, peanut, coconut, onion, etc) which really make your experience flavorful and enjoyable. For $12 it's a great deal and I definitely will be going back.

I cant give a zero review to this place so that why the one rating. The veggie biryani in the dinner buffet had some weird looking pieces along with the veggies and when i asked the manager in the front he says contamination of non veg and veg biryani is possible. How can he say something like this? That means he is himself not sure that if a customer orders a vegetarian dish he might have some non veg stuff contaminated...What if the customer abstains from any form of meat for religious reasons or has a strict personal choice. This sort of answer and irresponsible attitude is so offending and irritating.I would never go back again

Visited this place for lunch buffet and was very much disappointed with the food varieties, taste...Chicken curry was pale, fish fry was weird. Biryani was the only dish that was a bit better. I would never visit this place if, i had to choose over other Indian restaurants in bay area.

I love the Thursday's dosa buffet, Its very reasonable and a treat for people who love dosas. I also like the baby corn manchurian here =) Its spicy and very well made!

Space- Huge. Maybe they want to cater to people who want to throw parties at a restaurant. The tables are evenly spaced out. The decor is good. Food- We had gobi chettinand dosai, andhra spicy dosai and pepper chicken. The food was piping hot and spicy! They give a generous serving of three chutneys with the dosais. The sambar was very delicious. The chicken pepper was served in a nice bowl. However, I think the dish had too much chunky onion in the gravy. Service- Is lukewarm and prompt. (I dined here the night after I had eaten at two Michelin star restaurant so my judgement on service might be biased).

  • Rakesh K.

I give three star because of how clean their utensils are , If you want to take out your food , , its good place , Do not use their glasses as most of them are dirty or contain lip marks. I went three times considering their food to be good, I always had to do the exercise of changing the glasses , or getting them cleaned for me again. I was tired and finally asked them for a disposable. If I would have to eat or drink in disposable i would rather pay less and go to a chat cafe. Staff is not very attentive either. I had to ask twice or thrice for anything , being in restaurant business, you shouldn't forget what customers ask for..

The Indo-chinese over here is pretty good... Falooda is great..! The service is horrible.. they just sit you and forget to get the order for like15 minutes, then the food arrives after 20 minutes..then finally they take their sweet time to get the check .... overall like mentioned in other reviews.. one needs great patience to dine here..! Its a bit on the expensive side considering the portions of the food served and the price charged... Ambiance is not great...From our table I was able to see the cleaning guy spill everything down on the carpet and just walk away without cleaning it right away.... yuck !!

We visited on Wednesday night for dinner. Half of dishes in menu are still not available which we discovered only after trying to order. There was only one person taking orders, only one serving it and just roaming around! The person bringing the food was also seating guests! we ordered tandoori roti, chicken moghalai, cheese dosa for kids and Biryani. The chicken gravy and birayni both tested good. But the quality of chicken pieces in the Chicken Moghalai and Biryani was completely unacceptable . Just because of this one reason, I may not visit this place again. I wish I had taken a picture of the chicken pieces.

I've been to this place twice now and I've really liked everything I've ordered. I've had their chicken chettinad and andhra ginger chicken, both really yummy and different than what I've had at Indian restaurants before. My favorite has to be the chilli chicken from their Indian style chinese menu, chilli chicken is really spicy and a perfect complement to the noodles they serve.

Waited for 35 mins for the appetizers and another 25 for the main course. The wait staff stopped by a few times to check if I was ready for the check even before the appetizers showed up. The decent food is definitely not worth the horrible service.

Great Biryani. Very good Ambiance. If you stick to Biryani you will be fine. Only today I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and there were two problems with it. First it was very salty (First time I tasted the salted version of this dish), Second the chicken kind of tasted stale. Either it was from the buffet this afternoon or even worse, the dish was cooked fresh, but the raw chicken went bad. Any case, I am scared of the health hazard. If not for the bad quality, I would have given this place 4 stars.

Bought Dosa/goat Briyani/Chicken 65 as to-go. Dosa is very worst, hard to break it! Can't make worse than this. Also Chicken 65 and goat briyani are worst. 65 should be crispy but here it is spongy and seem cooked long back. I never write any comment, but this experience spoiled our mood and forced to write this review.

Worst Indian food ever! My husband and ordered a curry chicken dish and dosa plate and it came out cold and had a weird taste. My husband didn't even taste the chichen b/c it came out green, cold and lumpy. I tasted it and it had was disgusting and made my stomach hurt.

A coworker found this place and said we had to go early because she waited a half hour in line last time. Luckily on this holiday week there wasn't a line and the food was very good. Nice and spicy and a good variety. For $5 you can't beat it. the Pepper chicken was very tasty adn the rice was super light and fluffy with bits of chicken in it... too bad the chicken in the rice were the garbage parts because otherwise the rice was really good. There was also some deep fried cauliflower which required seconds and thirds to get my fill. 3 soups were available and the spicy one had that nice back of the throat burn that keeps on giving. The chicken soup was loaded with stuff once you dig it out from the bottom and was great on a cold day. For dessert, I really wanted the donut balls soaked in sugar water but they had a french toast thing soaked in sugar water... I have to finish this review before my sugar rush crashes. There was also a nutty, noodle like sweet yogurt soup that was yummie. When I am craving some good Indian buffet I will definitely come back here.

I have been to loud places and have heard loud music as well, believe me, sounds can rarely give me a headache, but when I went to this place apparently all barriers and thresholds were crossed. This place was so noisy that it gave me a headache(and I only stayed there for about 5-10 min at max). But wait that's just not it, my head kept buzzing for abt 30 more minutes. The food was OK! the chicken was fine, but too much coriander powder and turmeric in it. Take my advice, if you like dosa and stuff do a take out.

Place - We went there on a Saturday for lunch, there was not much crowd. The place is large, but not so clean for a place that has just opened a few months back. I would give them a 3 star rating for that. Food - We tried the buffet. The number of items in the buffet was 15-20, which was the good part. However, atleast 5-7 items were almost over and it took them weill over 30-45 minutes to fill it back. They had 2 chicken curries, but all the meat was over. The lamb Biryani too had nomeat. The sweet dishes tasted almost the same, they had too much sugar in it. I would give them 2 star for the quality of food, but zero for the availability of food. Service - I can easily rate it as the worst service I have ever received anywhere. Zero star. Overall, I will give them a 1 start rating and will never go back again. We were 4 adults and we all have the same opinion about the place.

Been there 3 times. Twice with family with ttl people ranging from 4 to 6 and once with son. Both times with the family (a medium size group), the appetizers came at same time as the dinner. No one was happy with that. Also with a medium size group (4 or more), table space is a total challenge... especially if you are going to order dosa. The dosa is larger item and you need more space for all the chutney bowls. Well, it was a little chaotic and inconvenient. We enjoyed the food and restaurant is clean. People are nice as well. So that is why the two.

Good: -The way manager/whoever takes your order, with great hospitality -And nothing else Bad: - Extremely bad bad service, nobody cares you after they take your order they just throw food on your table and never look back what we need and manager is smart enough to remind us we didn't order Naan for our curry (good marketing) but they can't complete our order in 1.30hr. Finally we had to walk out before they got our full order(for only 4 people). - Also food is bad, plate was warm when served but food was cold :)

Actually want to give 3 and half star. Just now returned from the $5 dinner buffet. From its name, we were expecting some authentic South India varieties at the buffet including wadas, idlis and dosas/uthampams. But did not find any. Hence giving half star less for that. It was a mix of some North Indian and South Indian dishes. The taste was good but not extraordinary/spectacular as some of the other reviewers have pointed. (one star less). The South Indian dishes were good but the North Indian dishes were A-OK. The naan/roti was freshly made and refilled regularly. The ambiance is good, very spacious, and the staff is friendly. Hence giving three and half stars. I may go again, but not too sure. PS: They seem to have a separate section which can be booked for private parties.

We ordered a party pack ($13/plate) last weekend for a small party at home. 2 starters (1 veg, 1 non-veg), 2 veggie main course, 2 non-veg main course, 1 biriyani, rice, nan, sambar, pickle and a desert. While placing order I asked Mr. Jay if they can give half the order veg biriyani & half non-veg biriyani (though they've option of choosing one of them for a order) and they were OK with that. The food pack was very fresh & quality of all items except one of the appetizer were outstanding. The quanity also sufficient. We recommend "Dosa Bawarchi" for any party caterings.

We were a party of 10 people on a Friday evening. We ordered 3 sabjis - aloo gobhi, baingan and kadhi. Also, paneer biryani and naan. The kids wanted rice kheer, paneer pakoda and egg bonda. The paneer pakoras were too spicy for the kids. We also ordered Sprite and Mango ice cream. We were told that there was no ice cream even though several were listed in the menu. There was no Sprite( how hard is it to stock up on sodas?), and only coke. The rest of the food arrived minus the paneer biryani, aloo gobhi and kheer. We kept reminding the waiter but still no sign of those dishes. Finally, we were done eating, and requested the waiter to cancel our aloo gobhi, paneer biryani and kheer orders. They agreed to that, but there were no apologies or explanations offered. The service - clearing up of dirty dishes, etc. was super slow. As far as the quality of the food - the egg bonda was appreciated by all who tried it, the eggplant was too sweet, and the kadhi too spicy. The naans were ok. The restaurant is decorated nicely, and is spacious. However, given our experience with the service, I doubt we will go back. The Bay Area is chock full of Indian restaurants, and the managers of this place have no clue on how to create happy clientele.

I don't often place review on yelp, but felt compelled to, after trying this place for the first time. I went with a group of 12 at lunchtime today, and I can honestly say that I have never eaten at such an horrifically poor indian restaurant before. The food is barely lukewarm and inedible. How can they even serve this rubbish ? Lines are long and as some others have mentioned it's largely to do with the layout. But to be honest I really didn't want to go back for another plate and that's saying something. Just avoid this place. The multitude of one star reviews were dead on. Will never come back here, even if the meal is free

Below Average Fare. I have visited this place almost a dozen times as it is near to my residence and easily accessible by VTA. The place is well maintained and is neat. But the food is not that good. Having the name Bawarchi..increases the expectations on the Biryani. But it is no where near to the Authentic Hyderabadi Dum Biryani of Bawarchi, Hyderabad. Regarding the dishes: - The Chilli Chicken and Pepper Chicken are decent. - Naans/Roti are the worst among the lot. - Kheer/Payasam is good, but Halwa does not taste good - Chicken/Mutton Curry is average fare. The masala used in both these curries is the same A Strict NO for Vegetarians as the vegetarian dishes are not good.

Always check tax and gratuity on your bill. It happened twice to us that we went for lunch buffet and tax was miscalculated ( it's very surprising as tax field is pre-fixed in all register) and gratuity was charged even for buffet and small party.

We tried tonight their Dosa Buffet. It was very very good. They offered 8 varieties of Dosa. There were 12 varieties of chutneys to go with it. Along with Dosa, they had many variety of food. Good interior, good service, delicious food. An authentic Andhra food. Its a must try.

I like this place. I have been to this place many times for lunch buffet on a weekday. The staff are very polite and willing to help and with a smile. The buffet spread is very good too, especially the dessert. They usually have soup, south indian sambar, rasam and curry and north indian sabji's and naan. Overall a really nice place. Just remember not to overeat! Edit: Btw, the ambience is also nice.

This place is about average for a afternoon buffet between fri to sat. Dont keep wondering why I have a 4 star yet. Its their thursday dosa buffet that's I can't resist to give a 4 star. The thursday buffet is so awesome ! They have about 21 different types of chutneys (sauces) served with your choice of dosa on thursday evening. You can get 5 to 8 types of dosas on thursday buffet with variety of chutney choices that you want to try. I haven't tried all 21 so far as its too many. Its pretty spacious and staff are good as well. This review should help you visit this place for a thursday buffet.

Owned and run by a really nice family. The waiter recommended the Chicken Tikka Masala, and it was some of the best we've ever had. We we're there at closing time, and we went out to the car and the battery was dead. We called a tow place around the corner and they we're going to charge us $72. We asked a couple of the younger guys working there if they could give us a jump, and they were more than happy to help. Got us right on our way. We even tried to give them another tip and they refused. Just really nice, friendly folks. We'll definitely be back!

Today I and my wife went for dinner. I like to eat Biryani and My wife want to go for dinner buffet. We were told that they will only serve either ala-carte or buffet for both of us. And that person is so rude that he did not use "SORRY". We walked out! My Questions, 1) We are coming to restaurant to eat food of our choice not what you want to serve. 2) If you have bad experience with people sharing the buffet that's your problem, learn to deal with it. There are many restaurants serve both ala-carte and buffet. 3) We never lost a restaurant but you definitely lost a customer. 4) Restaurants business is very competitive business in Bay area. With this attitude, I'm soon expecting an another management change.

Came here for lunch and immediately knew that this was a good stop; 90% of customers were Indian! Must mean it's a good place for its price! The restaurant is sort of awkwardly placed, with tables to one side and buffet to another. Buffet line was not very easy to follow, people were going from this side and that side. Plates were not placed in the most intuitive place, but once you get a feel for the layout, all is good. And you can get a go at your food. Malasa's are really good. And dessert selection isn't the best, still very satisfying. Yes, I would risk food coma at work for this place again!

I've really grown to love Indian food within the last year. I went to my first Indian buffet almost a whole year ago (Sakoon in Mt. View). My Indian friend wanted me and another friend to experience the difference between North and South Indian buffets. I can now see how the food is slightly different. Dosa Bawarchi was definitely spicier. I've also realized that my tolerance for Indian food's spiciness has gone up. Everything was quite good. For about $12, you can really fill up during their lunch buffet. I tried dosa for the first time. I especially love the naan. I filled up on so much of that and curry chicken. I tried everything except some of the soups and dessert. All the chutneys and pickled things were quite strong in flavor and spiciness. I indulged on everything and became uncomfortably full. It was a good buffet experience and I will be coming back to try their menu items for dinner.

Went there for weekday lunch buffet. Food is spicy but not good tasty. Naans r rubbery. Service was ok. The guy at the table was reluctant to bring extra dosa or naam at the table. Food placement looked very disoriented. Mostly like not visiting again.

Verbal assurance from staff that all the meat is Halal. I tried the chicken 65 (pretty good), the Masala dosa (also pretty good) and Yogurt rice (good). The Masala dosa comes in a very large triangular shape, which is a little bit different from most places, but still tasted the same:)! The chicken 65 was spicy, but good. The yogurt rice was interesting. Much more mushy than what I was expecting but still tasted good. Plenty of seating inside. Service was a little on the slow side, but it was a Friday night, so they were pretty busy.

This place has become not worthy of a review. I had to write so others may not end up eating here. We went for dinner. The food was pathetic, and so was the ambience. The air inside the restaurant does not smell fresh and clean. We ordered a soup for starter besides other starters. We were shocked to see the soup. It was a curry!!!. We gave the benefit of doubt, and tasted it. It was bitter, eeks. Everything else that came to the table tasted awful to average. Definitely not going here again.

Please please please avoid this place as mush as you can. !!!! The worst place I have ever been to have Indian food. They are a group of monsters who really can take your stomach for a ride with rotten food. Believe me, we have got four biriyani as TOGO order and when we opened the packet at home it was teriffic and we could not stand by that. We have to throw everything. Not sure, if we would had ate that biriyani, may be all of ous would have died with food poisoning. Next day, when we called them to inform this, the guy at the reception was too arrogant that he did not even care for what we are saying. They really dont know how to behave and what is customer service. Please please please avoid this place as mush as you can. !!!!

Biryani - andhra style was just extraordinary. Poor ambience, restroom was in horrible condition. Better to pack your food than eat in the restaurant. I wouldn't trust the water either. 3 star just for the biryani and took 2 stars off for everything else.

Simply put, food (ordered 6 different dishes) is the worst. Terrible waiting services. Will not go again. We were a party of 6 people. None of us liked the food.

Its has been very frustrating experience at your restaurant multiple times these days. Below are some issues: - Too much of delay in everything - Nobody bothers to take orders, later takes 15-25 minutes to get the orders - You are all understaffed, you must add more employees - Your team of servants not clear what is there or not

Food Here is ok, but there price for a buffet is high compared to other places. Not a great place for vegetarians. There are several indian restaurants in the Bay Area and this is just another one. Nothing Unique here.

This is a veggie north indian's opinion. So do take that into consideration - Ugh. Don't go here. Useless buffet. You'll see a huge spread, but it really isn't worth it. I mean, nothing was really tasty. It was just ok-ish food. If you make a couple of good dishes, it doesn't mean you can have 20 useless ones. The place is named Dosa but their dosa was a plain dosa. So why did you name your joint "Dosa" bawarchi?

    (1)
  • Ravi J.

I am giving it one star specifically because of the service and the because of its confusing name... I have never managed to get a dosa here. One the first instance, I called them in the evening for a dosa to go and the reply I got was they don't give dosa to go during the dinner service because it "breaks their dosa cooking cycle"... Wow!! Second instance was during the lunch time, which was a buffet, and I asked if they served dosa? The guy I was talking to said "we don't serve dosas during lunch "... Time to change the restaurants name may be?

Super poor service and food is stale in buffet.the waiter acknowledges that the buffet is stale. Saw some flies hovering on the buffet. Owner is not present in the cash register but behaves rudely with customers if they go in to look for some service. Dosas are of poor quality. No ac and they try to make do by running some small fans.

We went here for lunch to try it out as we were in the mood for Dosa and Idli. Unfortunately, we were informed that it was buffet only! So we were stuck eating the limited buffet offerings. Food was pretty spicy but not particularly tasty. Will not return or recommend.

Horrible service and double horrible staff. Rude and unapologetic. I waited for my order for over 45 min and it never showed up. None of their staff showed up either. Their manager never apologized either he just cancelled that off the order. This is sad I am never going there again. This wasnt my first such incident. It has happened in past. Pathetic...

Gosh, whatever happened to Dosa Bawarchi's dosa buffet??!!!! The quality of food has slashed tremendously. It has been over a year since I went to their dosa buffet and I recently came here, while craving for Indian food. For south indian food, there are two things that are primal: sambar and coconut chutney. If you go wrong with either of those, it simply means the entire meal is screwed up. Both the sambar and the coconut chutney wwere screwed up during my recent visit. The sambar terribly lacked flavor. Puri and masala was on their buffet spread; the masala was tasteless. It was just so bland that I can't even describe how bad it was. Oh well, I can keep moaning about every dish, but I'm going to stop right here. To summarize, the food was just not good at all and with the increased price of $14/adult for a buffet, I don't think I will return here. I was a BIG fan of their dosa buffet on Thurdays, but not anymore. Good bye Dosa Bawarchi.

I won't even go as far as rating their food because this is my 4th time here the service has gotten progressively worse. This is why - waiter was extremely rude like he was doing us a favor by taking our order - he wouldn't take requests to add something to the meal because apparently the kitchen was too busy. Beyond rude in telling us this - they brought our dosas out one by one and didn't bring the sambhar and chutney out until they were completely cold. I remember complaining about terrible service to the manager on my first visit and apparently nothing has changed. Fire all the waiters and maybe I'll come back in and rate your food the next time

Most callously cooked Indian food I have had in Bay Area. Ordered the following; Egg curry Daal makhani Gobi pepper masala Mutton pepper masala **Only One good thing is that the quantity is much bigger than other restaurants. But read on .... In the above items egg curry and daal looked similar ?!!! I didn't bother to taste . I had primarily ordered mutton but it was all messy thick masala gravy with some mutton pieces which were almost dissolving in the gravy. I didn't eat more than one roti. The gobi dish also looked dark in color and tasted full of masala. It was like an. Amateur chef cooking looking at instructions and over adding masala in each item. Really reminded me of cheap college mess kinda food. Never going back. Waste of money.

We had team lunch today at this place. The food quAlity was pathetic . There were very limited items in menu with No appetizer. Chicken butter masala and paneer butter masala was cooked in same gravy . Definitely it was our last visit to this place.

Food was actually great!!! I would love to give them 5 stars...but the service was atrocious! The guy serving us was in a burning hurry to leave and kept saying that everything we ordered would take 20-25 minutes more...and it was hilarious...we hadn't even wrapped up and gotten into our car when we see him running out and leaving in a hurry. It's a damn restaurant...don't run one if you can't teach your staff the meaning of Service!

Great buffet I have ever had - good service :) Buffet that serves dosa which I have rarely found any place in bay area doing it. Good food - would never regret going there!

  • Sree Sagar R.

All types of biriyani are good. There are a lot of items on the Thursday buffet, but everything is of an okay taste. No dish stands out as awesome. There are lot of chutneys available, but there only so much a person can taste. I hated the desserts in the buffet. I always prefer to take a biryani togo from here as the dinning experience is not so great.

You will find the best authentic spicy biriyanis in bay area, here. A place, you go to quench your indian taste buds. Favorties are Egg Dum Biriyani & Vijayawada chicken Dum Biriyani & Chicken 65. Any spice lover should give this a try. They are quite creative when it comes to suddenly surprising someone on their birthday, that to with the limited resources they got. This is the one restaurant, for Biriyani lovers.

Went there on Saturday for lunch buffet with some of my buddies, never going there again. There were so many things wrong about this place, the worst was the food. I do not know where to start but let me try. The first impression of the place was ok. There seemed to be good amount of varieties. But the only thing that I could eat was biryani. I tried few other items, the butter chicken was very dark brown and disgusting looking and very salty to taste. It was all gravy with very few pieces of chicken floating around. There was another chicken item that I forgot the name but it looked overcooked and had no flavor. The chicken 65 was def stale as it was very very dry. They started taking out items at 3pm, which is their closing time. We had been there for less than 15mins. If they were going to take off items, they should have told us. The guy kept on asking me if we were going to take more food, but come on if you are gonna take off all the food items at 3pm, you should not sit customers down at 2:45. Also the guy brought us our check less than 5 mins after we were seated??? And I was so surprised to see that the price for buffer was $14.99??? I didnt check the price before going in but I can name at least 5 other indian buffets in the bay area under $11 that are 1000% better than this place, with more varieties and better food. Its the only time I have been there and the experience was horrible. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

Went for lunch buffet on Sunday, it was a definite mistake and I am still having heart burn, goat biriyani smelt raw uncooked meat , had a variety of dishes but all oily and taste less stale food. I bet I can cook better then their cooks. Dosa was served without any masala , naan was like fried papad so hard to break. Better have 2-3 dishes and maintain the quality.

  • Vinay K.

Decent food so 2 stars. Rude staff. They say no for an item ordered from the menu (like thali) an hour before they close. This has happened to me regularly.

    (2)
  • Rutvij B.

Their biryani ranks among the best that I've ever had. Custard is tasty as well. They served fresh, hot naan and dosa at our table during the Thanksgiving buffet. Customer service was very good and we felt welcome. This isn't very common at an Indian restaurant. Naan was lacking, but the biryani made up for it. Tasty food at a somewhat hidden location.

This place really sucks. I would have given 5 stars if it had not been handed to the new management 2 years ago. went here a few weeks ago and got to know that the management had changed, our curries had so much pepper that it felt like eating the masala paste. the desert tasted old and the bread was like papad. And worse, our entire family had an upset stomach for the next 2 days. we are never going back!!!

Three words, "Vijayawada Chicken Biryani" this is almost close to Meghna Biryani in Bangalore. My Holy grail for biryani. The succulent chicken 65 with gravy hiding at the bottom and the Biryani rice at the top. I'm drooling just thinking about this. We also got fish 65 wish was really good. Food is a little oily. But if you are indulging once in a while who cares. Ok imma get me some soon. Downside is its available only in the evenings or when they don't have the buffet. Just a mention, the buffet is average. Food is cold and I've have better food. Its extremely rich lots of oil/ghee and feels very heavy. Just wait till the evening and get the ala carte biryani. Skip the buffet if you ask me. :)

Been here a few times. The food is not bad but the time it takes to deliver is really frustrating. It kills your hunger even before you start eating. Happened all 3 times I have been there. I would not recommend this place at all. You can get similar quality or better in less than a quarter time it takes here.

I really wanted to try this place after hearing a lot about their thursday dosa buffet. I was super excited as this is the only "Dosa Buffet" in the bay area. OMG what ever happened. The dosas were really bad, it tasted sour. We tried Cilantro, Masala, Spinach and Podi Dosa. After tasting first two dosas sour, I don't want to judge them by just two varieties so we tried two other varieties. All in all the reason why we were there was for dosa buffet and that was horrible. Although they had ten dozen chutney accompaniments spread out nothing stood out apart from the regular coconut and tomato. Some chutneys were really horrible( Garlic) and we just repeatedly took coconut. For the good part and the reason for three and not one star are the main courses. Had I just gone keeping the buffet in mind I might have given them better rating but having gone for their dosa buffet it was highly disappointing. The main entrees had pongal, rava upma (tasted pretty decent), idlis( so-so), vadas( Good but super oily), dahi vada (horrible), Chat( Ok), I took rasam in a cup and it is easily the terrible rasam i've ever tasted. The sambar was just ok nothing great. Poori and its aloo accompaniment tasted better among the dishes. Dessert was a kerela spl kheer which tasted good. I really fail to understand their sub par dosa or was it just one of those days for them. With so many other delicious dosa place I don't think I'll return here. The buffet was priced at $13.99, which is ok had the food been worthy.

Dosa bawarchi has been a mixed experience till now. Probably had the worst dinner in SJ once and a pretty good buffet dinner on other day. Thursday buffet was good. Lots of variety on authentic indian tiffin items. Ironic to the name of restaurant as well as to the name of buffet (called dosa buffet) that except dosa all items were pretty good. Worst dosa ever in a dosa buffet but all other items were very good. May go again based on variety of tiffin items on buffet

The place is good. The was food was great and they play wonderful songs. The ambience is good and there is plenty of parking available. The food I a better than thirupathi Bimas. Thirupathi Bimas has spicy food and they make noodles in semiya!! One issue with this place is the lady who picks up plates. She squeezed my daughter between the chair and table and was not apologetic at all. When asked to be careful she asked us "how else can I do work?". She was very rude. I wish they let her go and get a better person to do the job. I would have given 5 stars for this place except for this lady.

We ordered around 6 different items (nan, noodles, gobi manchuria, veg biryani, etc.) and everything is pretty bad. Oh my god, pannier butter masala and gobi manchuria are the worst of all. I strongly suggest you to avoid this place.

We hosted our daughter's first birthday here. They have 2 party halls. We had around 60 guests and so booked the small hall. They had good variety of food. All our guests enjoyed the food and we loved the taste. The only reason I am not giving a five star is because of the hall maintenance. Just after the party started there was a power trip and the a/c dint work. Though they tried their best to make the a/c work, it dint happen and we had to go on partying in the hot hall.

the service was slow. they need more people to help. and they did not have some of the items on the menu like the chicken or seafood thali. The dosa's were ok but not great.

I love the food over here.. It has different kinda hyderabadi touch to it. We ordered andhra pulusu and malai kofta... I loved it. I at times crave for these two dishes. I havent tried anything other than that..! But loved these two!

I take my team out to lunch to this place quite frequently as they ask for repeat visits. Most of the food is really tasty, with only a few that look like are not very popular. It's always full of Indians, so I'm guessing the food is pretty close to the original :-) Watch out for chilies in some of the plates, if not careful, you put one hidden in the awesome sauces in your mouth, and BOOM, you're sweating. My favorite dishes are: -Paneer Makhani -Goat -Butter Chicken Don't forget to get their mini dosas, made to order, to accompany your succulent food. Awesome

  • Harsha G.

I love their Veg Biryani. If I were to decide between my other favorite Anjappar and Dosa Bawarchi, I would picks Dosa's biryani cos the blend of spice is more balanced and the portions are huge. Usually, I have to pack some portion as to go. Love how spacious the restaurant is. Its ambiance is way better than most Indian restaurants. The service is a tad slow, but they are always courteous and serve with a smile. I have to try thr special Dosa dinner. Will review that once I do..For now, all that I eat here is the Biryani. I am loving it..

  • Shalu S.

I went here on Thursday for Dosa buffet. I loved the concept although Dosas were very very dry but I loved amazing collection of chuttneys. Rest of the fare was okay. There was yogurt rice, coconut rice and plain whit e rice along with Sambhar and rasam. Chole -bhature, chaat and dahi vada. They need to work on their sweet dish, sevyain was below average. Also, $14 for a Buffett plate was kind of expensive.

I was craving spicy, hot indian food and my uncle brought me here. This place is popular with his colleagues.. i can see why! The curries here tastes really robust and fragrant, really spicy too. I like it a lot! The selection really isnt that wide though, but I think it is sufficient. I really enjoyed the Chicken tikka masala, bryani and rasam soup. Cant eat here too often though, always end up overeating and feeling quesy afterwards. Didnt touch the desserts though.

Service is too slow.. If you order the food it comes like after an hour and that too cold tasteless food.

  • Supriya K.

Pathetic attitude. While the food tastes good, the staff lacks basic courtesy. Especially this one main guy who takes orders, not only lacks basic etiquette, also sports a very arrogant look. He does'nt even reply with a proper no, if a particular item is not on the menu. Let alone, suggesting alternatives. Stay away from this place. These guys should know the value of customers. Many Indian restaurants take customers for granted. There are several other Indian restaurants with a similar menu and good service. I hope the management of the restaurant pays some attention to this negative feedback and straightens up the staff. I think they ll know whom I am talking about in particular.

Came here with a bunch of coworkers for a send-off lunch. It is a buffet restaurant...get a plate and load up, lather, rinse, repeat. There was a fair amount of variety here, with both vegetarian and carnivore options. All the usual suspects were here. Interesting is that they have a large variety of condiments/pickles. I had never seen this at an Indian place before, but maybe that's because I wasn't looking for it. They also have a couple of dessert options. The food was solid, but not mind-blowing in any way. The service was good. Very attentive for our very large party. Empty plates were taken quickly. Waters were filled and more dosa and naan was brought when we ran out. Not a bad option at all if you need an Indian buffet fix.

  • Visharad C.

We went here on Thursday - the day of dosa buffet. Chutney selection is really good but not at all impressed by their dosa choice. They offer around 8 different dosa's but the size is really small and doesnt taste as good.

This is specifically for people who are trying to get some to-go on a tiring Saturday.. & won't get anything that you ask for .. because "God Knows Why" !! Called at around 8 on a Saturday to check if they can take my to-go order.. asked for Egg noodles (the simplest noodles of all)... and the lady who was taking order said.. sorry we don't have noodles.. we are sold out.. I was like.. how can you run out of noodles.. you make them fresh don't you? At least that what you say.. She did not even bother to ask me if I'd like something else.. she just kept quite.. waiting for me to think of something else to order.. I thanked her (for nothing) and hung up.. This is not the first time that it's happened to me. Many a times, they don't have whatever they "say" they have on their menu. Staff is super rude towards the end of the night I think.. they are all beat (like we have been dancing in the air or something).. they behave as if they are doing you a favor by feeding you.. One good thing is.. their vijayawada chicken biryani is very good.. spicy and reminds me of back home.. thats why the two stars.. otherwise this place deserves zero for hospitality & etiquette.. More and more Indian restaurants are turning into this mode in the bay area.. not sure if anyone else has experienced that.. more the number of Indian restaurants.. more rude staff.. more un-professional behavior.. and more and more arrogance than hospitality.. I think they should go back and think as to why they became restaurant guys when they can't even smile when they serve food.. Pity !!

Just changed ownership. Our staff went here for a lunch party and had some good food. It was crowded and that spoke volumes about the quality of food. I'm not a big fan of buffets of any kind, but this one didn't bother me. Food was fresh and inviting. They had some innovative curries that you don't see at other places. Large dining area, so we didn't feel cramped. This is good spot for getting your Indian fix. For me, I'm picky about my Indian food and this place passes the test. Next time I go, I want to go for dinner and order a la carte. Worthy for sure of a 4 star rating.

    (4)
  • Arun S.

Its an OK place for buffet and a very good place for ala carte. Even with the multitude of options during the buffet, only a few items hit the spot

    (3)
  • Aasi A.

Terrible service... Once telling the menu item would rob them of precious grill time... Once telling most items on menu won't be available due to dosa buffet, I asked them if I can order a la carte and was seated down... The buffet is good... For anything else I'm not going anywhere near this place... If you're not going to serve something on the menu just because your grill time is precious then my time is better spent avoiding your restaurant

My friend and I were the only non-South-Asians in this restaurant during a weekday lunch. I guess it has to be authentic? Either that or there really is no other better ones in the Silicon Valley (which is hard to believe). In terms of flavor, this place is great. Everything tastes authentic, soft naan and fresh dosa. However, the selection was somewhat limited, especially given the size of the place. There was also no tandoori chicken or butter chicken (two of my faves). The palak paneer was also radioactively green. Other than that, good, quick, and worth your money if you've got an itching for some Indian food and you work in the area!

    (3)
  • Yashmi M.

I like this place! But do be warned that the food can be a little hit and miss. I had their lunch buffet. The paneer dish was full of spice and flavor, the korma was good too. The eggplant dish looked untouched and unappealing! They served freshly made dosas and naans...yum! Custard desserts are not my thing...blah. We also ate dinner there. Had the Gobi Manchurian and manchurian noodle dish - both were delicious (and oily :S)! My husband ordered a masala dosa (but they brought out one without any masala in it) and it was bland, with no flavor. He also ordered their chicken taali...he was not impressed with it. So the food that they make good, they make real good...and the stuff that's not good is flavorless. I would def eat here again! I would like to try their dosa buffet one day with their millions of chutneys!

Had to write an update for this place, because I continue to be very pleased here!! I went here for my third time the other day, and I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop or something to go wrong, but it doesn't happen. They consistently are awesome every time I've gone! I was out of the area today and hit another buffet up in Newark for 12 bucks. Did not even come close to comparing to Dosa Bawarchi! Like I said in my original review, 12 bucks is on the steep side for indian lunch buffet, but the quality of food and selection are so good here that I will pay it. What I love most about the food is how spicy it is-- spicer than most indian places I order from, and I LOVE it! Chicken tikka continues to be my favorite. Their mutter paneer is fantastic and the paneer pieces are plentiful and done perfectly. At this point, this place by far exceeds any other local indian buffet in the south and east bay. Definitely at the top of my list to take people to when they're in town :)

  • Nishka B.

We went for the Sunday lunch buffet. Sadly, the food was mostly quite bland. Oh, it was spicy enough but it lacked flavor. The dosas were tasteless, naan average, and the curries were hit or miss. A couple of them were pretty good, like the banana fry (basically plaintain chips) and the vegetable jalfrezi. Biriyani was decent. We were very disappointed with the sambar - it was thick and lacked the proper seasonings. The egg masala was pretty tasteless. Rasam, also.. The kheer was overly sweet and not cooked too well. I couldn't even finish any of these items. I think they are in over their heads, trying to make too many things.

    (2)
  • Heena C.

You should try this place because the food was pretty good, the taste was good, even the ambiance was quite authentic, their service was very quick, they are quite clean and the quantity of the food was very good. Dosa is a must try.. The prices were also very decent.

I am obsessed and in love with this place. Seriously I eat here at lease once a week. Everytime I come, I eat massive amount of sambar and idli. The spicy peanut chutney they give you with idli and Dosa is the bomb. Nary a Thursday passes where I am not planning to go to the Dosa buffet. Having eaten indian food all over the world (and most recently just back from Kenya) I would say this Dosa buffet is super special. Surely they must have 50 kinds of chutneys and maybe even more! My favorites are the cilantro, garlic and ginger chutneys. Like I said, I love this place and you can count on catching me noshing away here at least 1 (and more like 2 if I'm being honest) in a week. Please check it out and patron these guys. You won't be disappointed!!

This place is pathetic ! 0 stars for service. Ordered soup and appetizers and told the server that we want our main food later after we finish our soups. But happened exactly opposit. I got my main dish before soup and appetizer. Also, simple things like missing side dish with main order. Had to remind the server couple of times to get chutneys and sambar which comes along with the dish. I will not go back here. 1 star for food. : Nothing great. Can make mush better at home. Also, food here is very very spicy. Not suitable for my taste buds.

Me and my husband went for dinner to this place yesterday. We ordered 2 cups of tea and samosas. The tea that they served was not hot at all. It tasted stale. The samosas plate had 3 samosas. They were good but one of them was half cooked. The veg thali was okay. They said there will be one panneer curry but nothing was served. The non veg thali tried by my husband was good.

  • En J.

Mediocre food and poor service! We ordered a bunch of South Indian appetizers, followed with Dosa and Tea. Appetizers were sub standard not only in taste but also in quantity, well quantity didn't matter much since it was all bland (ordered Vada/Pakora/idli's) Dosa was super greasy and partially cold, not sure why part of it was almost cold, asked for a sambar refill which never reached us and the servers were too busy in empty restaurant. It's a rather big restaurant but nothing appealing about the decor or ambiance or servers or food. Finally it was time to get the tea, again COLD! and I need not say that Indian tea tastes pathetic if its not HOT. I had a polite word with the server and was told that was the last cup of tea (really at 6 p.m), I simply walked to the counter, paid and walked away with no desire to come back.

The food was really spicy without no flavor. I felt like I was putting spoon full of chillies in my mouth. The goat in their goat biryani was so tough I thought I'd loose my teeth. We won't be coming back and you should think twice about trying this place.

This place has the best biryani and saalan. You can make it as hot as you want with the saalan. I'm not interested in rest of the menu.. if a restaurant can make one thing really well, that's what I eat there. So get the biryani here and enjoy!

I went for dinner recently .. Terrible I must say .. The sambar was watery ... Clearly seen that they added water .. The dahi vada had watery dahi ....and the dosas were ordinary .... it was not worth the money I paid . I would never go back to this place.

Pathetic. customer service, food, busboy attitude. I am from south India, so i love spicy food. But here its not spicy good, its spicy bad..its more of pepper than any masala. I will never go again. ordered paratha, it was drenched in oil. Disgusted with there food. heard there buffet is good. but I wld not take a chance with that either.. 2 starts coz the lassi was good and I am in a good mood writing this review.:-)

All I can say is that it is an average Bay area Indian place. You can find a lot of Andra style biriyanis, some Indian Chinese food, dosas, etc.. I recommend their Thallapakettu biriyani. Slightly pricey.

This place can brag about being one of the few (if not the only) unlimited dosa -cum -buffet restaurants around. Stretch your dollar pretty far by stopping over at this place for a meal, especially on the Dosa buffet night on every Thursday. The dosa menu is substantial with a range of dosas to select from- cilantro, masala, madras masala, mysore masala, to name a few. Service early in the evening was pretty solid too -our server approached our table at least 2-3 times during our meal to inquire if we wanted to place orders for additional dosas. The buffet spread was impressive-separate section for chaats, vada-sambhar, pongal and rice items, topped off with dessert. And the final tab per head on the special Dosa night is also pretty kind on the wallet -$11.99+tax. I will bring my hungry self to this place again for sure.

Did the dosa dinner buffet. The food is ok but alot of the items are pretty spicy. I wasn't too familiar with the food and the staff were friendly and very nice in explaining what the stuff was. Very vegetarian friendly (which most Indian restaurants are).

Have tried the Vijaywada special biriyani here. Its really good but a bit spicy for a non-andrait. Haven't tried anything else apart from the biriyani.

I have been to this place quite a few times and I must say you get good value (food wise) for your money. Ambiance is mediocre and service is generally slow. Also there is an open table setting so don't expect any booths.

Had their dosa buffet on Thursday n LOVED it!! Best South Indian buffet ever.. Quality of food - 5 stars Quantity of food - 5 stars Service - 5 stars The dosa are perfect little sizes, so you get to try 4 or 5 different varieties ( spinach dosa, podi dosa, coriander dosa ) and there is no limit on the number but by 3 I was stuffed. The vadas n variety of chutneys were delicious. A must try for every South Indian food lover. I was so impressed with the buffet I went back for other food on 5 different and found new favorites :) Yummy tomato soup Perfect egg dum biriyani

Clearly, the only reason to come here = Spl. Vijayawada Chicken Biriyani. It's perfect biryani without the mess of bones in the chicken. It's spicy and very flavorful. For $12.99, the portion is huge, I could eat it for a few meals, but then again, I don't have a very large appetite! Dosas are ok, I'd rather go to Madras Cafe for my South Indian breakfast fix. Everything else we ordered was just about ok, nothing to write home about. If I ever come back (also the reason for the 3 stars), it will be only for the biryani.

We went to Dosa Bawarchi on 6/14/2013 for dinner and ordered Chicken Manchurian, Vijayawada Spl chicken Biryani and Goat Biryani. I have never eaten such horrible biryani ever in my life. The chicken was full of artifical colors. No taste at all. I dont understand why it is named after vijayawada.I am from Vijayawada and the Biryani of Vijayawada is very good. Please remove the Vijayawada name before that and do not spoil the name of that place. I would recommend to try Biryani in Vijayawada and then compare the biryani that is made. There is no match to what is available in vijayawada. Also the Goat Biryani, i just had one spoon of it and was not at all tastly. It was full of oil and coconut smell. The meat used was so hard and dry and was looking so bad. Did not even dare to eat it. Just adding Basmati rice and meat is not Biryani. There should be right proportion of spices. And last but not the least the manchurian was again full of artifical color. The service was so bad. We asked for thalis and they said it is not available. We also checked for some items in fish and they again said not available.

I am not sure why people did not like the place. - The interiors are very good and Spacious - Absolutely loved the Vijayawada Chicken Biryani - Had a Lunch Buffet and it was good. May be less varieties for Veggie people but since I eat meat it did not make a difference to me - Dosas given to me was tried with chicken. New taste. Like it - I think the reviewers with negative comments are competitors. Many dont have enough reviews for me to believe.

Dosa Bawarchi seems like the real deal when it comes to providing authentic South Indian food. Their menu had items that I didn't even know of before, and I've been to my share of South Indian restaurants. I went with my family on Saturday for dinner, and we got kind of lost, but found our way quickly after seeing the sign in the parking lot. We went in and were quickly greeted and seated with menus. We looked at the menu for a long time, eyeing all the new things we hadn't heard of before. We decided upon Punugulu, plain dosa, paper dosa, veg fried rice, shrimp pepper masala, and garlic naan. When the appetizer Punugulu came we were kind of confused about what it was, but they let us know it was the appetizer. When we tried it, we realized it was something my mom makes, but we call it dal vada. It was pretty good, crunchy and cooked to perfection. It came with orange chutney, it might have been made from peanuts, but I'm not absolutely sure. Then came our food, the plain dosa and paper dosa both were huge. They both came with an orange chutney, white chutney, and sambar. The paper dosa was really thin and crispy, my mom was having a hard time eating it, but I'm sure it was exactly what she expected of it. The shrimp pepper masala was spicy according to my dad, but perfectly fine according to my brother. However, they both agreed it didn't have enough shrimp in it. My dad was convinced it only had 5 pieces of shrimp in it. They ate it with the garlic naan, which was delectable. The veg fried rice didn't end up coming and we were all full, so we just asked for the bill. The bill had the veg fried rice included it, so we let them know and asked for it to be canceled. They canceled it and were apologetic. Overall, the food was mediocre, but they do have good service. If you're in the area, it's worth a try.

There are a handful of Indian places I like in the Bay Area. This is the latest. They aren't afraid of spicy, but they don't overwhelm. The flavors are deep and enticing. I have been here a few times now, and I always keep eating after I am full. That's more about me than about the restaurant, but it's because the food just tastes so good. It might take a while to get your takeout order, but hang in there. Or go to the buffet, where service is up to you. With separate buffets for carnivores and vegetarians, you are sure to find people like you. My only wish is that they opened at 5 instead of 6 in the evenings, so I could get takeout on the way home from work. By 6 PM, I am already home or have eaten something else.

Good food with bad service.Their buffet has really good options with decent taste. However the service is bad. We went for a dinner over the weekend oping somebody would attend us as there were couple of empty tables. But nobody cared to even show up for 10 minutes and the lady at the front desk was busy with phone orders. When I asked the manager for the seating I got a cold reply that I need to wait 10-15 more minutes when there were at least 2-3 unoccupied tables and we had only one party about form us waiting to be seated. I had a similar experience even before when nobody showed to get our order and thought they had improved in their service.. I would not recommend this hotel.

I had heard a lot of good reviews about the food in this place but I was clearly disappointed by the service when I was there for dinner during the weekend. We saw a lot of waiters taking orders but nothing seems to come out of the kitchen quickly. The food was O.K and I would not drive all the way to Milpitas to try this place. Even getting a check was a struggle we had to ask them many times and finally we walked up to the front counter to pay. Looks like this place is not run well they are completely disorganized. I cannot imagine how bad it would get if they are crowded.

Went for a lunch al-a-carte. The folks were pretty rude. They said they have only buffet and I can pick food from the buffet for the price of al-a-carte. Else I could go to a near by restaurant (???huh). In paid the bill and the old person gives me the food and asks me to pay the bill. I say I have already. He ends up saying no again and again and asks me to stay (heights of doubting a customer for 10 bucks of biryani). He goes in checks with a couple of folks and says okie (no apologies ???).

  • Veeral S.

Food was really good, service was ok. Lots of options-- all sorts of dosa, chutneys, puri, upma, etc etc. I would definitely recommend to others. Seems to be a favorite in the area, the place was packed by 8pm!

  • Smita S.

Happened to be in the area so decided to try it for dinner. It was a Tuesday and their Chettinad / Kerala buffet day. I'm not big on buffets but am so glad we tried this one. The food was FANTASTIC!! Included a large spread on both the veg. and non veg. Section. On the veg. side everything I tried was flavorful and good. The non veg side had a killer crab curry, excellent biryani and a bunch of other options. I thought the mutton fry was OK more so because there was more of bone and cartilage etc and hardly any meat. We were there right when they opened for dinner but as we were leaving I noticed they were setting up an appam station. That would have been great with the Chettinad curries. Well, next time because I'm sure we will go back here soon! The price was right too ... $15!

It has a Buffet service every night with good lots of varieties. Service and the cashier were quick and good. But, the food was not so delicious. The size of the dosa, was comparatively small. Bit costly for such a food i.e $11/ person. It had unique options of chutney's ! Felt the food was spicy too. Definitely not worth for a 5 star rating.

  • Tammy P.

My go-to place for biryani. It's spicy, flavorful, and delicious! I usually get the prawn biryani and some veggie corn soup. I have had biryani from Peacock as well and I think this is way better. It's not as oily and you get way more prawns for your dollar. The food is still hot and warm when I come to pick it up- sometimes I lag and come about 40 mins later and it's still great! They also have indo- Chinese food as well which I have had only a few times. It was okay.

  • Tazo N.

I have been to this place multiple times and I kind of like this place, but the reason for my 2 star rating is their buffet. Their buffet sucks (it's literally worse). I never had such bad items before. The al a carte is good though.

I wish I could take away the one star here! This place was so bad that I decided about warning others. We walked in on a weekend and were greeted promptly. The ambience was so creepy with dark curtains but what bothered me was how hot it was in the restaurant! We told the waiter who did not know what to do! We ordered idly- basic indian steamed rice cake. Terrible! Chewy and drenched with cooking soda! My husband and friend ordered masala dosas.! What a disaster! Extremely spicy , greasy, unhealthy! We couldn't wait to get out of there! Have never felt this terrible in any indian restaurant! Not going ever again! What a shame!

I went here before my red eye flight back to the east coast, so I was looking for something comforting that could numb my depression and heavy that could put me to sleep on the plane. I thought I could find it here, but I was wrong. My fiance really likes this place but I found it to fall short on several aspects. The biryanis here are definitely different than your typical Hyderabadi dum biryani. I'm totally open to trying different regional variations of the highly sought-after biryani dish, but I think this was slightly odd. We started off by sharing the chicken lollipop, majestic chicken, and chicken 65. All three appetizers were substandard. The majestic chicken was presented as super spicy in the past, but came off as heavily peppered with way too much citrus (lemon juice). The chicken lollipop and chicken 65 -- I couldn't tell the difference between these two dishes. One was on the bone, and one was off the bone. Both were mildly spiced, but props are awarded for the crispiness. We had their special goat biryani that's only served on weekends. Their signature biryani preparation definitely has to do with the absurd amount of ghee that goes into their dishes. The rice was almost too soft, but it did melt in my mouth. The effect that ghee has on food is magical, so there was THAT aspect of the dish. The meat was nearly inedible. The goat pieces were very heavy on the gristle and bone and was almost non existent. Flavor wise -- it's there. There's no heat, which I was warned about. The complexities of the flavors were drowned out by the heavy ghee presence, so that left a lot to be desired. I had a few sips of my fiance's salt lassi - WTF? Was it just straight up salty buttermilk? There was nothing "lassi" about it... Eh. I'd come again to try out their "5-alarm" Vijaywada biryani, but that's it.

We were here for the buffet. It was overall ok. The number of items served is really good for the $12 they charge. The biryani served in the buffet was very good, but the rest of the dishes were just ok. I dont remember anything that was very delicious!

I'm not sure where the cries of bad service come in. For my experience I came for buffet lunch, in which minimal service is generally accepted. My old co-workers and I got together for a fatty lunch and decided to give this place a try. No one was really disappointed, but we all agreed that it was A-OK. We enjoyed Chaat House more. This place did not have as fresh naan and I wasn;t a big fan of the chutneys. I really missed the tamarind chutney the most. It was nice that there were separate sections for veggie and meat and the selection for veggie was quite extensive. The meat selection was a bit lacking. I'd really like to come back for Indo-chine. All in all I'd recommend it for lunch time buffets.

  • Fremont G.

Tried their buffet. Lacks variety and tastes ghastly. First of all, "No tandoori chicken",..(wow!that's like a chinese restaurant with no noodles). Two chicken dishes, one fish(y) and one mutton biryani. Thats it for meat lovers. Veggies don't fare much better either. Dosa is served at the table and tastes sour; which typically means that the flour has fermented for wayyy too long. Three+ types of chutnies to go with the dosa and vadaii but only the coconut chutney is tolerable. Rest of them are ghastly. Three liquid desserts..a rice pudding, a yellow sugary goo and a kind of custard with canned mixed fruit thrown in with a metallic taste. And they charge about $15 for this kind of muck. Much much better to go to Vedas at the same price or any number of other Indian restaurants for much less and you get much more and much better food. I'm not going here again..sorry

I went to a party there yesterday in a very nice Banquet Room at Dosa Bawarchi. I was very impressed with the food. Everything tasted great! The Buffet tasted fresh, unique & spiced just right. The food was spicy but not overpowering. I eat Indian food alot & my stomach tells me if the food was greasy which it was not. I can say Dosa Bawarchi passed my test. The staff there are nice & friendly!!! Next time I'm in the area I will definitely go back to this great Restaurant BTW: If you are looking for a place to throw a party there are a few Banquet Rooms & plenty of parking!

This place was the most recent stop on our tour of the Indian buffets near the office - recommended by an Indian co-worker (who was part of our party). Food was really nice - perfect (for my taste) level of spiciness in the spicy dishes and the none spicy dishes had plenty of flavor. There was also a good variety of dishes to sample too. The way the buffet was laid out was good too - no long lines at any of the stations while we were there (and the place was fairly full by the time we left) - and they delivered dosa to the table too (the naan was in the buffet section). Service consisted of removing empty plates as there were two pitchers of water on our table when we got there (and we didn't get the traditional up sell of mango lassi) - so it was even more self service than most buffets (but the used plates did disappear fairly quickly) One knock against this place was paying the check - we did the typical we're all paying for ourselves trick that most Indian buffets deal with easily - it's the same price for everyone after all. In this instance, the guy working the register really struggled to figure it out, took him three attempts and about 2 minutes. Bottom line - food was great and the location works for us - we'll be back!

The first two visits were fine, the last two not so much... The food was great the first two times, the service was not bad. But then we made the mistake of going on Thursday I think it was, a day when only the buffet is served. Meaning, no items from the menu, either pay for the overpriced buffet or nothing. So we tried the buffet, it was basically snack food and appetizers. There were no main dishes, the dosas they served made 'fresh', were flimsy and filled with a thin paste that I think was supposed to be potatoes. While, the array of many chutneys was impressive, all of them tasted alike. It was a complete waste of money, we expected dinner, what we got was snack food, and those sorry excuses of a dosa. The whole thing felt like a money making scam, where all costumers were obligated to pay the full buffet amount. Needless to say, the next time we attended was not on a Thursday. Why it was just yesterday. This visit was so disappointing, that I'm not ever going again. We made the mistake of going very hungry, to a place where we expected food to be served, how silly of us. We were seated by a very rude man, who had a problem with my purse sitting on their precious paper table mat, I was rudely told to remove my purse. While that was minor, it only got worse. When it came time to order one of my family was told that the thali was not going to be made because they are too 'busy'. Then we ordered dosa, the namesake of restaurant, no dice. We sat there for a solid 30 minutes, we questioned the waitress a few times, she said it would be out soon, then she said they are too 'busy' so it will take longer, finally, she just ignored us. Fine, they are busy, even though the entire restaurant isn't full and its a Saturday night, there are people who are seated after us that get their food within a few minutes. Finally, my very hungry family could take no more, and decided to just leave. They didn't even try to stop us, why? Because they had never even started on our order. This restaurant will sink fast, with its greedy money making ways. If you can't make a dish on your menu, then don't have such a large menu.

While the price to quantity ratio of this place is good, the quality is the one that misses out, especially for a vegetarian. And I don't know why they have dosa in their title. Majority of their menu is not dosa and their dosas are terrible!

  • Raj K.

Egg Biryani I would say is there signature dish. Spice lovers will be baffled with this dish. One more dish to the must try list is the Vijayawada Chicken Biryani. Dosa Buffet on Thursday's has been freaking me out for quiet a few weeks. Thursday night spread of the pickles was just outstanding, gutsy to say no one wouldn't have expected such large number of pickles and podis. Weekday/Weekend Buffet is an OK to try will be a satisfactory visit to any one. I would prefer an A la carte or a Thursday night buffet. Must visit place service is pretty decent wide spread dinning area.

Last Friday I took a togo order after hearing a lot of good comments about this restaurant from my co-workers. It was really horrible. May be my expectation was high but the food quality was terrible ... I ordered their famous vijayawada special biriyani... I think I got tricked as it was like some basmati rice on top of chilli chicken. May be someone just cancelled a huge order of chilli chicken. . As they had a kerala style buffet, I ordered the malabar parota and it was just wheat ball soaked in oil !really ??? The pepper mutton curry was okay ! Not bad .. They have to bring up the standards !

I have been here twice and tough variety pretty good. They have something for everyone. Typically 3 soups, Biryani ( veg/non veg) appetizer ( vada or idli etc)., Dosa delivered to your table. many chutney and aachar selections. 2-3 desserts. Plenty of parking and seating but it does get full soon so arrive early.

Crappy, crappy place! On our way to tirupathi bhimas yesterday, saw the place and wanted to try out. Worst hunger time decision ever. Ordered dosa, biryani and manchurian; The dosa batter was stale and the way you know this is by the sour after taste! Sucks for a place that has Dosa in its name. The worst was ants crawling every where! Ants in plates, on our hands, ants everywhere! Stay away! Go to Bhimas as its clean and neat atleast.

Nice restaurent with tasty food and nice ambience. The chutneys served with Utthappam were delicious. Ordered a vegetarian thali and all the items in it were tasty especially plaintain chips. But the dosa buffet(served thursday nights) didn't impress me a lot. Out of all the dosa varieties served, only one dosa was good. The Uthappam which i ordered in my last visit tasted better. The chutneys and pongal were tasty in the buffet. I would give 3 star for the dosa buffet.

Used to be one of my favorite Indian Buffets. Went there for lunch with a client for lunch (12 Noon). Feedback: 1. Friendly staff 2. Noise level was ok 3. Was not that busy 4. The food items were cold and a litlle bland (big no no) 5. Naan was not fresh (I rather wait for it and be fresh) 6. Mango Lassie was ok but very sweet 7. Dessert was ok but not a lot of choices You guys can do better.

Hopeless service! They have 100 items on the menu but half of them are not available. Finally they take the order and half of the order is not sent even after an hour. After repeated checking and reminding, finally we get it. Ps: please don't ever try idli here.

Ate here twice after arriving at San Jose. Had a not so good experience first time but felt the chicken DUM biryani was good since I was eating first time after 2-3 months. Second time, we ordered a take away and the biryani was salty as we had throw away most of it. The price is also a bit costly compared with other biryani restaurants. I never had a yelp account but created an account specially to write review on this after my horrible experience!!

The only reason I go here is for the Vijayawada Chicken Biryani which has Chicken 65 kind of chicken in the regular biryani .. but now they managed to screw up this one too. And now it costs $12.95! Can't think of any reason to go back to this place. May be for South indian tiffins -- NAh! Madras Cafe is much better Biryani? -- Kabab and Curry ! Indian Chinese: Make it at home or go to India Chaat Cuisine (Ok!) Service is strictly ok. They used to be pretty decent but now their service, food taste and quality everything went south. Sad! .. ..... ........ Still can't think of any reason to go back.

Service is very poor. - Wrote our name and waited for 25 mins; Customers who signed up after us were getting the tables ahead of us. Checked with the person at the counter and found that she had canceled our name without calling us - Finally got a place to sit and were ready to order. Waiter came over but was not willing take order of few times, so ended up ordering some other items - Got some of the dishes we ordered but didn't get couple of the items from our order even after almost an hour. Got frustrated and asked the waiter to cancel it, he canceled it happily without any guilt on the face Came back home with half empty stomach. I was a bit embarrassed as I suggested and took my friends to this place. Don't go to this place if you plan to order from Menu.

This is just sub standard food - plain and simple! They have an amazing variety of South Indian chutneys (10 different kinds) BUT only on their Thursday night Dosa buffet. Service is below average and so is the food. I have heard their a la carte menu is much better in terms of quality and taste. I liked the Dosa buffet but mind you ...it has all South Indian items so if you end up on a Thursday night - be prepared to stuff yourself with ALL rice based items! Now - today was a unfortunate experience. I went their wanting to try their regular menu but lo and behold ..they only had the bad bad lunch buffet for $15 per person. The food was BAD - sorry to the other reviewers but if you want to spend tons of money ..go to better places like Turmeric, Shivas or even Amber in Santana Row. DB lunch buffet is just not worth 15 bucks. The spread may trick you into thinking that it's a lot of variety ..but it's NOT :( I was very disappointed with quality of food and service today. Had Veg dum biryani, kadhai paneer and spinach pakora from the buffet ...everything else looked like it was made from leftovers :( The rice kheer was watery, the gulab jamuns undercooked and the custard was such a terrible shade of yellow that I skipped it. What's good - their chutneys, podi, pickle, dosas ( just make sure you order a la carte)

We came here today for our friends son's Birthday party. The room that was reserved for us was big and spacious, and clean. The food however was a different story. It was buffet style, but what got to me was that, it wasn't clean nor neat. It was messy, and the salad area was not stocked, and the trays which were suppose to contain toppings for the salads were empty. I did however have a Mango smoothie which was very delicious! Yum! The rotti was sooo good! They have a plain one and a garlic one, I'm not much of a garlic kind of girl, but I was satisfied with the regular delicious rotti.
