El Asadero Taco Shop Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I love El Asadero. I am a regular here and the only thing I order here is the California Burrito. I have tried their soft tacos and tamales, but California Burrito takes the cake! Soft tacos: They are delicious and have great portions. At a regular taco truck, I would order 5 tacos because they are so small. At El Asadero, their tacos are big and they do not skimp you on the meat. I always, always, always get carne asada. The taco comes with meat of your choice, lettuce, cheese, pico de gallo, and guacamole. It's not your traditional soft taco, but it's delicious. I normally order 2-3 and I'm good to go. In my opinion, this is not their specialty but it's good. Pork Tamales: I only ordered this once and it wasn't too bad. The masa was a little dry, but with the sauce that they pour on top, it helps with the dryness. The sauce they pour on hot is a red sauce, and on the side includes some lettuce, cheese and sour cream. Worth trying at least once, but don't expect too much. California Burrito: This is the holy grail. I've never tried a burrito with french fries in it. This is the most unhealthy burrito I've ever had. What's inside: meat, cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo and french fries! Pour some hot sauce on this baby, and it's amazing. The pricing here is very reasonable and affordable. They give you large portions and does not skimp on meat. They have excellent customer service, I've never been disappointed. Give this place a shot, better yet, give the CA burrito a try!

Never go to a burrito place that 1) doesn't put rice OR beans on their burrito and 2) has neon green "guacamole". If I wanted Flubber on my food or a fake burrito I would go to Taco Bell. Pro: they gave me correct change.

This is a great place for a fast, inexpensive meal. I have been going there for years and their customer service is excellent. Not to mention that I have had almost everything on the menu without ever being let down. Try it and enjoy. Frank Baer Merced, CA.

Place is good. Prices for the combs are a extra good deal. I ordered a tostada & chicken taco. Tostada was typical, the taco was a let down. Dual tortillas with chopped &seasoned chicken period. I e seen carnitas tacos with guacamole served like this but that way different kind of meat & still you get guacamole. So 3 stars.

This place is super average, even bad sometimes and it always blows my mind when people talk about it being great. Maybe I just order the wrong stuff; not a fan of their burritos or tortillas. The salsas are good, the carne asada was pretty good, but the guacamole is without a doubt fake. How can you even be a Mexican restaurant with fake guacamole?

Best Carnitas in Merced! I usually go to Fresno for some good carnitas but now that I've tasted these...I'm hooked! Great food and exceptional customer service. And this is my 3rd day in a row coming here..

El Asedero is definitely my go to place for fast, good Mexican food. They have great food, friendly employees, and always have a line at the peak times of the day(which means other people think it's great). Breakfast burritos are great, carnitas are great, you won't be disappointed!

  • Eric S.

Carnitas plate is extremely tasty and crispy, and enough to feed a family of four. Will stop by every time I'm rolling through Merced.

  • Katrina C.

Breakfast burritos all day is a good start to my visit here! I ordered the bacon burrito. I can take down a lot of food, but I thought the burrito was a perfect size to feel stuffed but not like I wouldn't be able to move for the rest of the day! The cheese, beans, and bacon were all delicious inside with my only complaint being that some times the foods were a little more segregated than others and I'd end up with just bacon, or just beans, etc... Not a huge problem but the mixture of all the flavors were so good that I preferred it immensely. If you go, I'd definitely try a bottle of Jarritos, very refreshing!

  • Nicole M.

The carne asada supreme quesadilla was amazing and HUGE! The rolled tacos ares taquidos, and good, however, their guacamole isn't a traditional guacamole, more like a guacamole sauce.

  • Yanet A.

Best burrito in Merced. The place should be updated. I never stay to eat my food. Not appealing but the food is very good.

Most cleanest and super duper good i love breakfast Wednesday morning's with my hubby they also have a restaurant in turlock on monte vista across from stan state.....!

  • Trish F.

One of my favorite places to get Mexican take-out. Friendly staff, fast service, and delicious food! They do have lines sometimes but they seem to go fast. I usually call in my order and it's ready within the time I get there. Salsa bar is good.

  • Justin M.

This is a review of the carne asada fries. First of all, they're not carne asada fries. They're soggy, paste covered fries for 8 bucks, the most I've ever paid for "carne asada" fries. The cheese and guacamole aren't real, and the "carne asada is ground beef. Why would I spend so much money for ingredients out of a can? They were a waste of money. Never eating them again. The burritos looked good, though. I know of places where I could get real carne asada fries with real shredded cheese and real guacamole for way less. Again, don't eat their fries unless you enjoy paste foods...

    (1)
  • Gabby G.

Service was good but food was not. Low quality ingredients. Guacamole had artificial coloring in it. Fish tacos were tasty but high on fried breading and lacking much fish. I think I used up a lifetime supply of styrofoam just with my dine in plates and cups.

  • John L.

They have Really good burritos! Definitely worth the price! The chimichanga is only $5 bucks! And Its Hellaa Good! And Huge! .. I prefer this place over those Little taco truck. Kool Staff.

  • Ashley E.

Best Mexican restaurant in Merced! The breakfast burritos, quesadilla supremes and carne asada nachos are amaaaaazing! The staff is really nice and tend to remember their regulars and their orders. Also, within the last year they've done some renovations to the floors, furniture, etc. I This place is definitely in my top 5 for Merced and I encourage you to check it out!

    (5)
  • Christina A.

I used to really love this place, but there food has gone down hill, like they've gotten a new cook. I love their self serve salsa bar and their hot carrots. The regular food isn't good. Especially the fake guacamole.

  • Amy F.

We are THRILLED that we happened upon this amazing taco shop. Seriously the BEST Mexican food we have ever had and the friendliest staff. The carne asada nachos were amazing and our kids loved their tacos and flatuas. If you are in the area, you will not find better food, nicer people, or better prices. We cannot wait to return someday!!!!

    (5)
  • Kelly S.

I don't know why I keep trying this place. The food is awful. They never trim the fat and gristle off the meat. The tortilla chips sit premade in buckets in the open and the taco salad shells are made in advance sitting in the open on the bottom shelf of a rack only inches off the floor. Today the lettuce in my taco salad is old, brown and slimy. The carne Asada is actually so over fried it's crunchy. It's absolutely gross

This place always hits the spot. The food is delicious, and the service is always fast. I can't say enough good things about this place!

    (5)
  • Trisha C.

Super fast service. Within 7 minutes of placing my order I had my food. I ordered the Hash Brown burrito (which is served all day) and it was great. The eggs were hot, the cheese was melted, and the hash browns were crunchy. The size of the burrito was large too.

    (4)
  • Jessica M.

I been here so many times I've lost count. This place is great! Fast, friendly service and delicious authentic Mexican food. If I had to choose between Taco Bell and this place, this place wins hands down. Totally worth every penny! My go to is the Hash Brown Burrito, because well I love breakfast burritos and they serve them all day. If you're ever in the area and want a quick bite, this place is the place to go!

    (5)
  • Tina K.

Best authentic Mexican food in Merced! Not as greasy and for sure not the place that would give you diarrhea like Victoria's & Maria's would. But, unfortunately it is not opened 24 hours like the other Mexican places. Definitely, try the Al Pastor tacos or burrito. They are soooooooo good!! Their guacamole is one of the best I've had in Merced!

    (4)
  • Gina S.

Their carne asada fries are the bomb.com oh! And the carnitas plate too! Yummmm! Their staff is very friendly, yes! I would recommend this place to others.!!:-)

    (4)
  • Carlos P.

The best "authentic Mexican food" I've had in years. I just didn't eat there once but, three days in a row. The tacos, burritos, tortas, chile relleno, cheeseburger & fries. The menodo is out of this world. Looking forward to tonight's meal.

My family and I have tried many Mexican restaurants in Merced before finding this gem and we love this place. I have been there probably over a hundred times now and have never been disappointed in the food or quality. That is saying a lot, as most of my friends and family know me as overly picky of all restaurants food quality and service. Definitely not much effort put into the ambience or décor in anyway and almost made it so we didn't try the food on our first visit. However, the food flavors and quality makes up for it and the prices are fair. My favorite menu items hands down are the carnitas tacos, Al Pastor burrito or tacos, and grilled Chicken burrito with sour cream & Salsa. We love their salsa bar and have many times ordered a 20 oz. Salsa to take home. Yes it's that good! We live over an hour away in Mariposa and we have many times drove there just for dinner as there is no authentic Mexican available where we live, only Mexican influenced restaurants. Yes, it's worth the drive!

  • angie j.

If you want real California Mexican food- go here! I am from Portland,OR and dream of having this good of Mexican food. We had the guac and chips and burrito. It was out of this world. Great flavors and enough spice to make your senses happy. Also, the service was great. And kind, very kind.

    (5)
  • Ally R.

I used to love it here but their salsa bar gave me food poisoning when I ate a torta and chose their green salsa. Their refrigeration for the salsa bar island is lacking as the salsa containers sit on ice and get warm. Boyfriend got red salsa and same carne asada torta and was fine while I was sick for a good day or two until nothing else could come out of my body. Food is good just beware of open salsa bar.

  • Kevin C.

Best Mexican food in Merced without a doubt. If it were open 24/7 I'd go more often. Everything just tastes so authentic and the carnitas are perfect! I usually get the carnitas burrito and I've never been disappointed. The only thing that I don't love is their guacamole, it's a little too thick and creamy but that's just a personal preference. The only serious flaw is that it's not open late.

    (4)
  • Cassy A.

Great food and service! Had the supreme burrito de azada. The azada was delicious as was the rice and beans, which most of the time is what's hard to get as good as homemade. The staff was super nice and the food was made pretty quick as well. I will definitely return.

    (4)
  • Jennifer M.

It's pretty much the best Mexican in Merced. Even when I am away for most of the summer and only come back for a couple of days, I have to stop by this place. I usually get the carne asada tacos, but their nachos and California burrito are also good. The food is delicious and I am never disappointed with the service.

    (3)
  • Adrian M.

Stoped by here twice. And got a shrimp burrito each time. All I can say is I love shrimp and they were bomb! Especially with a beer. Great place

  • Neil C.

Good food and great service. I had an asada burrito and the meat was nicely cooked and the portion was more than generous. The overall flavor of the burrito was good. The service was great from the cashier who was helpful and upbeat to the cook who prepared the food correctly and quickly. Overall it's a good place to eat if you want good food quick.

    (4)
  • Mathurin K.

large size tacos. Lots of meat and good flavor. Chicken was a little spicy but great flavor. All the tacos I tried seemed fresh with quality food.

    (4)
  • M S.

I ordered the carne asada supreme. Got it and realized it was just ground beef. Showed the cashier the inside- it was wrong--and he told me the ground beef was carne asada. So I will not go back again. I can get real carne asada burritos elsewhere.

  • J T.

Pretty good burrito but cannot compare to L.A. taqueria in the mission... j&r tacos wins as well...

    (3)
  • Richard D.

Hunting for good "Al Pastor" in the Merced area. They had it but too much sauce over the meat which kills the flavor. And actually they were somewhat expensive plus charging us extra for chips bill came to $24 for two....

  • Dwayne M.

I was in Merced on a fire assignment at the airtanker base and I looked to 'Yelp*' to help find some good eats. I went to El Asadero Taco Shop and was not disappointed. Had the number 5 combo; two tacos (beef), rice, and beans. It was great; went more than once.

  • Bark'n Biscuit Salon S.

My family and I have been eating here since they opened! Their burritos are huge and yummy, I personally like their enchilada plate, rolled tacos, and super quesadila supreme. Food is always ready in 5-10 mins and hot and tasty! Will be back soon.

    (5)
  • Love R.

This is by far the best Mexican restaurant in Merced. Great customer service. We arrived 5 minutes before they closed and wanted to order but the grill was already turned off. They still took our order and turned the grill back on and made our food. The carne asada torta was delicious!

    (4)
  • Ashley V.

my favorite mexican place in merced!! they are very underrated! everything i have tried i have loved! especailly their beans!

    (5)
  • Kevin B.

This place is hit or miss. Some of the items are great, others are just ehhh. They have a wide variety of options. Never thought I'd say this, and I don't know how they do it, but their burritos are served so hot I usually have to wait 10 minutes before I can eat it.

    (3)
  • Martin R.

Really fast and really good food. The burritos leave you wishing you could finish them, there that big and good!

    (5)
  • Pedro L.

So kinda went overboard here but it was totally worth it. Happened upon this place by some stroke of luck. If I remember correctly I ordered 3 tacos and a tostada, the lady friend got 2 hardshell tacos and a tomale. I think there was something else shoved in there but can't remember. The pastor was fresh, and when I say fresh, I mean the way the 80's rappers use it. 4 real. Tasty tacos at a delicious price. I remember the tomale being pretty hearty and dressed up as well. Now I know why this place is near the medical district, if there were one in Chicago we'd be over ordering and having heart attacks every day. Thank you strange town I was in for some weird reason. I'll miss you.

    (5)
  • Chris D.

Love this place. The food is great and the employees are always very courteous. My foods usually done in 5 minutes which is really fast... Keep up the great service guys...

  • Sophia C.

We ordered off al acart menu. Sopes, tortas, al pastor, enchilada, & tacos! OMG good...that's how good! And the table next to us had these carne asada cheese fries!! My 2nd time here from out of town! I'll be back when I come through Merced for sure!!

    (4)
  • Sharon L.

I went for the basic carne asada tacos (not crispy). Because really, if I'm going to judge a taco place, I'm not getting nachos or burritos. Tacos are where asada can really shine. It was a good meal choice. The tacos are a little bigger than the typical street taco fair, but not by much. Nice bunch of carne asada, with some guacamole (as mentioned by someone else, probabbllyyyy not straight up avocado, but it's fine) and shredded lettuce. Take advantage of the salsa bar with unlimited pickled carrots and jalapenos, plus a few different salsas...and we have a winner. The meat quality was good...none of this gristly stuff. And it wasn't super dry, nor was it bland as I seem to keep finding carne asada to be all over Merced. No there isn't a ton, but again...think street tacos. This isn't a burrito that's bigger than one's head. I'll definitely be back. Thank you for being so much more interesting than a certain downtown taco joint. It's in a good location, and it's clean. Staff is friendly...Spanish speaking or not. Support a local place and try this place out.

  • Donald Q.

I go here a lot because of the location and quality. The food is way better than victorias! The guys working in the back are always fun, and the quality of the food does not fluctuate. I wouldnt hesitate going back here again! I reccommend the Shrimp Burrito. Thats my personal favorite.

  • Loyal B.

Food Quality: 10/10 The best mexican food in town by far! Service Quality: 10/10 The employees are always nice. Atmosphere: 9/10 It is typical and in a strip mall but it is nice enough. Cost Efficiency: 10/10 It is worth every penny. The prices are good. Menu Variety: 10/10 They have everything you could want on a menu. Over-all Score: 49/50 The Nacho Supreme is the most delicious nachos you will ever eat. Awesome place.

    (5)
  • Katie P.

Argh! If I can come here and eat their California Burrito everyday, I would. The food quality here deserves two thumbs up. I love it!

    (5)
  • Daniel D.

The tacos al pastor were very good, though no cilantro and onion; they came with guac. The tamale was very good, except it was crusty at the edges which makes me think it was many hours old. The fajitas were a disappointment; who adds teriyaki sauce to Fajitas??!

Experts argue that it's a bad idea to buy a pet from a pet store. Most pet stores use puppy mills to mass breed these animals in unhealthy conditions. Once they're sent to pet shops, they get little (if any) walks and are often stuck in an unclean cage marinating in their own filth. All puppies look healthy and cute, but looks can be deceiving, and every time you buy a puppy from a pet store, you're contributing to a business model that looks at these animals as a cheap product, much like the Nike sweatshops in China. Luckily, I'm pretty sure El Asadero breeds their own tacos in house, so you can shop there if you like without supporting taco mills. Buy a taco, save a life. ~~~~~~ A little birdie told me that I needed to order a "burrito supremo" from now on, presumably because they're supreme. I don't really like ordering foods with descriptive words that indicate how much I'm expected to like it, but I did anyway, because I'm extreme. If they named a burrito after me it would be a burrito extremo, because I'm that extreme. I would then ask them to call it a "burro extremo" because it will be bigger than a little donkey. We'd have to charge a bit more since donkeys are very big, but that's okay because everyone will taste it and see how extreme it is and like it on Yelp and we'd make billions. I asked for the supremo without meat, so it was delivered meat free. Pretty large burrito for the price. Then I thought I saw it moving so I drowned it in Green Salsa until it was dead. Then I ate it with a fork and it was delicious. I'm thinking of planting one in the grass later so that I can grow a whole tree of them, but then I'd have to prune it and I don't like manual labor so I probably won't.

  • Nicole B.

It's not authentic mexican but it's good. They give you good portions you can definitely split your meal. I like to get get the nachos and split them that's my fav! It's kinda like a Marios or a marias taco shop but better, same type of menu just not gross. If your in the area and want some American Mexican food come here, you might be pleasantly surprised.

    (4)
  • Cristian R.

I come here for their carne asada fries. Really good and it fills you up. Their salsa bar has some nice options as well for that little extra chile kick. The staff is friendly and make you feel welcomed. Try them out

  • Savannah F.

Worst Mexican food I have ever had!!!! If you actually want meat in anything you order don't go here! People were nice but very disappointed in their food. DO NOT GO HERE

    (1)
  • Andy B.

Call in ahead for a quick and easy to-go. Don't miss out on the pickled carrots or hot sauce. I moved beyond fish tacos for now (reducing the fried food intake!) and am pleased to say that I have really enjoyed the grilled chicken and pork tacos. If you are sensitive to sodium, I have found the chicken to be a little salty. However, I am still coming back on a regular basis!

    (5)
  • Alexandra L.

Love the food, but you just gotta make sure they get your order right! But great food!

Their carne asada burrito is so good and so big. My wife and I usually split one.

Finally! Actual flavor found in Merced. Since moving here I have looked and looked and eaten bland disappointing plate after bland disappointing plate of food in this town. 100 thousand people, you'd think there would be one somewhere that knows how to cook. Well the guys at this place do. First I had the enchalada and taco plate. The meat was tender and full of flavor. Not all crusty and dried out like every other place in town. The sauce was delish. Came back with a friend for breakfast and had the heuvos rancheros. Again, they seem to actually now how cook food with spices and ingredients and flavor and texture! And the price is right. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. Ill still have to drive to the bay area for all my other food, but at least I can get mexican locally now. Really Merced. Step it up. For the other eateries in town, please google "flavor" and study up. There will be an exam Friday.

This is a decent taco joint. I'm found of their crunchy tacos (beef and chicken) but not the rolled tacos (which I suspect are not made on premises. frozen). The crunchy tacos are crisp to perfection and "loaded" with meat (either ground beef or chicken), lettuce and cheese. The meat to shell ratio is like 2:1, so I was scraping some of the meat out, which I still gobbled up with the extra lettuce. The shell....oh the shell has a "sweet" corn taste. I've always heard that corn has a sweet taste, but because I don't care for corn I have never experienced it; until now. The meats are flavorful, especially the chicken. The chicken is freshly made and has a sweetness to it also....it's blended with tomatoes, onions, peppers and spices. Very nice. The rolled tacos are a fail to me. Nothing special, but NOT homemade in my opinion. The avocado sauce that comes with it is too light and whipped and somewhat artificial. A good fresh avocado mixture would work better. They come either 3 or 6 to an order, I had the beef. I want to try the chicken to see if it's the same chicken that was in the taco....we'll see. It also comes topped with lettuce and cheese (along with the whipped guac). All of the salsas (green, mild and spicy) are delicious. And the customer service is good also. I will be back to try more things. Oh and a couple of months back I did have the Chile relleno burrito...it was soo good. So good that afterwords I was in a fetal position sucking my thumb. Yes, that good.

As I've said in multiple quick tips, this place has the best crunchy tacos in Merced. Staff is friendly and the service is quick. Salsa bar is awesome, as well as the carne asada fries. Will be back again and again! And I want to try their breakfast... The menu looked great!

    (5)
  • Chrissy O.

I went here once while I was taking care of errands in the area. The place is really clean and well lit. I ordered the rolled tacos. They were pretty good, except for the guacamole. It was very creamy and pastel green colored. I think it was more like the guac spread than authentic guac. I want to go back because I've heard their burritos are really good. :) I would eat here again. :)

Carnitas burrito. Carnitas came out crispy. I assume it was refried on the grill prior to loading it up in the tortilla.Garlicky salsa, yum.

this is the second time that I came here to try. My bf got the chili Verde plate combo as the same as the first time. He said this is one of his faves. and they make it really good compare to other shops. I had the fish burrito, rice and beans. The burrito taste fabulous! fresh and gigantic. Rice and beans plus the salsas were all season to perfection. They weren't bland like most places. Service was super fast and the guys up front taking the orders are super kind. Lastly, order a large Horchata, it was almost running out so he insisted that it was "on the house". how generous. Will be coming here more often.

Great prices and great food! Love the 6 rolled tacos! Great salsa bar. The staff is very courteous!

If you are looking for the best Mexican food in town, this is not it. If you are looking for pretty good Mexican with big portions, low price, and friendly service, this place is for you. Great place for fast lunch or pick up.

  • Zoey T.

This is one of the best Mexican joints in town! Delicious food, so yummy! Love this place. Not only is the food amazing, the service is great, clean restaurant and great location, and parking. This place is great when you want good quality food close by, especially when you don't want to go across town for Mexican food and have to deal with all the riff-raff downtown. The owner is very friendly, as well as the employees. Overall, great place to eat! Highly recommend!!!

The staff here is always so helpful especially the cashier. The food is good and I like their horchata.

  • Pete S.

Very clean. Service was quick. I had shredded beef taco and carne asada burrito. I've had better but they were still very good. They sell beer, not sure about wine. Sign in front of cash register says $.50 atm fee. I would return

  • Stephanie T.

I really really enjoy this place. The food is good, and at a reasonable price. I absolutely love the nachos supreme, there was a moment there where I had them at least 3 times a week. They are that good. They guys are really nice and orchards is delicious!

  • Lindsey F.

Super delicious taco shop. Their salsas are addicting. Their creamy green sauce is so delicious I am salivating now!

    (4)
  • Cheyenne S.

Not authentic Mexican food and not even good food. I've had nachos and a burrito from and they were both so-so. Not even real cheese on the nachos Chicken isn't good

    (2)
  • Nicole S.

This place is not perfect but you have to get the rolled tacos and quesadilla. The quesadilla is so cheesy and the rolled tacos have the perfect amount of guacamole, it also has a lot of cheese. I would recommend getting beef instead of of chicken for the tacos. But you may like the chicken better. The place is small, the decor is really cute. I love this place so much!!!!!

  • Aileen D.

For the past 6 months I've been getting my burrito/taco fixes at La Victoria's on 16th & R st when I'm in town, and just recently I've tried El Asadero a few times..I must say that each time I was not disappointed!! It's a nice little place to either grab N go or sit and munch kinda cafeteria style. My "Go-Getters": - 6 Rolled Chicken Tacos This had a unique guacamole layered with lettuce and shredded cheese on top of the tacos. Pretty yummy! - Chicken Fajitas & Tortillas Combo (which just means it includes rice & beans) - *** Shrimp Burrito Supreme *** I loved this!! Way better and cheaper than the shrimp burrito at La Victoria's! Not as messy but still be careful (i may just be prone to food stains FYI) I still wanna try their fish tacos to compare...Really wish I brought that orange sauce though from Hayward's La Victoria's (unrelated/separate from Merced's, but related to the popular one in San Jose)...

Great food. Went here with a friend for brunch after a midterm and karate practice. It's about a 7 minute drive from UC Merced, so freshman can easily take the school's bus (called Cat-Tracks) or drive there for some lunch or dinner. They serve breakfast as well, but I don't know how it is since I've only eaten here once. The prices may be a bit steep, but it's worth it. The food I had was NOT greasy AT ALL, which really impressed me because the Caliente station at UC Merced's dining center has really greasy (but delicious) food (and leaves your hands smelling like whatever you ate for a few hours, even after washing your hands for minutes). I ordered a Carne Asada special, which was a Carne Asada burrito on a combo plate with rice and beans. I have to say, the rice and beans were delicious! I eat at Chevy's all the time with my parents, and the rice and beans here are a lot better than the rice and beans at Chevy's by far. The rice is very soft and fluffy, and the beans are nice and warm with a light sprinkle of shredded cheese on the top of them--delicious. The Carne Asada burrito was pretty big. Trying to think of a comparison here, it's the size of a size 6 or size 7 foot (for men). It had a lot of meat in it, but it wasn't overpowered and you could taste the burrito as a whole. There was a lot of guacamole in it as well, which I loved about it because at places like Baja Fresh or Subway, the items with guacamole in it tend to cost the most. For the Carne Asada burrito with rice & beans + a medium coke (+ my friend's fish burrito with rice & beans + a medium coke), the total was $17.96, which may be a bit on the upper end of "cheap" fast food, especially for college students, but I have to say, for this restaurant, you get what you pay for. It's very easy to find (right next to Raley's), and it's very close to UC Merced. If you're a student that wants food other than regular ol' DC food but doesn't want to go all the way downtown, this is a nice place to grab a quick lunch. For everyone else, this is still a good place to eat lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is nice. Medium sized place--not to big or too small, clean tables, and when I went, a decent amount of people that looked like they were on their lunch break (a group of guys that had paint all over their clothes and faces, a guy in a suit and tie, etc.) Overall, I rate this place a 4/5. In reality, most people would probably rate this a 3.5/5, but I'm not really nit-picky about food. It either tastes good or it doesn't.

(I have been disappointed yet again- my wife and I ordered a nacho supreme. I was taken back in time to my high school cafeteria where they served that runny synthetic bright orange cheese sauce, made complete by the stale, lightly salted corn chips and canned jalapeño slices. It was not a flavor sensation- my $7 bucks would have yielded better results from Taco Bell. Very disappointing... We won't be back anytime soon.) OK- so the above was my last review of El Asadero, written a while back. I haven't ordered the nachos since, but I have tried and liked the grilled chicken tacos- man, I have grubbed on those. They are hard to beat and the price point isn't bad either. They have a huge chicken quesadilla as well. If you're in the mood for an Americanized flour tortilla cheese and chicken fest, that is your answer. I've been back time and time again over the last year. Just avoid the nachos...

Very Americanized Mexican food place... and by this I mean less authentic and more expensive. You can be the lucky winner of a burrito for like $7 here. The food is decent, but the price tag doesn't fit. I found myself going here when I was too lazy to drive across town as its the only Mexican place in far north Merced near Yosemite Ave. No debit/credit cards, so make sure you bring cash or you'll have to use their ATM.

They don't accept a debit/credit cards. BUT, they have an ATM machine inside to milk a fee out of you. The food here is good, consistent. However, there's plenty of other good taquerias in town--especially if you're drunk.

Not the best tacos I've had, but good. If you're feeling adventurous, try the buche. (pig intestines? Some kind of offal) It's unctuous and crunchy and delicious and delicate. The fish and al pastor are solid items. love ezra

Yup, we discovered this place post bike race. The fish tacos are the best. Everything else is decent. We've been coming here for two years now and will continue to do so. The last time I had a carne asada burrito because I was to tired to eat anything else. It was good, but not great. Next time I'll go back to the fish tacos, but hey sometimes you have to branch out! The salsa bar is awesome: two red salsas, one green, pickled jalapeos and carrots. Man the frick'n jalapeos were hot last time! I love it!

My original review of five stars was based on the food cooked by long-time kitchen staff. In January, these staff members opened their own restaurant and now IT is the hands-down winner of BEST FAST MEXICAN FOOD in MERCED. I am now moving my review to VILLA'S MEXICAN FOOD home of the food formerly found at El Asadero as cooked by Hector and Gerardo. They now have their own restaurant and IT is the best. El Asadero used to be great, but now the beans are bland, the sauces are too spicy or too bland, the rolled tacos are pre-cooked and then dunked in grease again just before serving. For GREAT food, go to VILLA'S (next to Lane Furniture and the car wash, in the mall with Kohl's). Check out my review on Villa's Mexican Food for my recommendation.

El Asadero is an outstanding strip-mall taco shop that's always a reliable place to stop when I'm staying in Merced, and worth going out of my way for when I'm passing nearby. The al pastor is sweet and slightly spicy, love it. But the real draw for me here is the fish tacos - good sized chunks of crispy-fried fish with shredded cabbage, salsa verde and a tangy crema dressing. There's so much stuff on the taco that you can't pick it up without first attacking half the toppings with a fork. And then eventually you get to the awesome moment when you can pick up the remaining sloppy, double-shelled mess with two hands and dive in. Let me return to the fish for a moment - it's satisfyingly crispy, never greasy. And the batter-to-fish ratio is just right. Two of these babies and you're set for an afternoon. There's a salsa bar with half a dozen choices, but for some reason they're kinda stingy with the little plastic cups, which are nowhere to be seen at the bar itself. You have to ask for them at the counter, and even then you might only get one, depending on the whim of the counter guy. Do you think this impacts the star rating one iota? Ha!

This place is cool if you need some food late night and you have a good buzz, however, if you go there sober, you'd wish you went somewhere better. Not bad though.

I went to this place based on the positive yelp reviews, and was extremely dissapointed. As a disclaimer, I'm used to mexican food from the mission in SF, but were my standards less elevated, I still wouldn't recommend this place. The beans tasted of aluminum can, the spicy carrots were anything but, and were soggy to boot. My enchilada was downright awful, and the chile relleno was stringy. Even the rice was overcooked. My one consolation was an enormous cup of horchata, but that can be found pretty much anywhere.

I give this place a 4/5 because of several reasons. The food is great and at a very affordable price. As a college student, El Asadero really didn't hurt my wallet. The food is cooed right there and then so you know it's fresh. There are a number of kinds of authentic Mexican foods which to order and once again, all are reasonably priced. I compare the food to be one step up above Jack in the Box, which is pretty darn good. The atmosphere is very cliche of a small town eatery and won't get any rave reviews on design. The employees look a little menacing but are friendly overall. Refills are 50 cents so ask for no ice in the drinks to get your money's worth. Also, be sure to bring cash as they don't accept debit/ATM cards or checks.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
