We ate here last night, we must say the food is exquisite! Pricey but worth it. I ordered the Parmesan Crusted Chicken with Pasta and my friend ordered the Whiskey-Apple Glazed Chicken. My order hit the SPOT! It was exactly what I had been craving for. We didn't wait too long to be seated and our food was promptly delivered. Our waiter could have been friendlier but he seemed in a rush to get his work done, understandable that the restaurant was busy but he could have cracked a smile. :D Don't know if we will come back because its expensive! But we do recommend this place for sure !

Excellent restaurant!! The food, beverages, ambience, and servers are all top notch. Dave, the manager, is very knowledgable and helpful in planning group events, like the one for 32 people we recently held. All the attendees remarked about how comfortable the setting was and what a great meal they had. There were no negative comments, and for a group that large, that's a great review!

Whoa! Everyone by now should know that CJs is known for ginormous portions. I hate to admit this, but the only CJs that come to mind is the one in Buena Park. So oops, I forgot you're in my hood! Their prices are not bad considering they can feed a person for the next few days with their leftovers. I was actually surprised that the food came out fairly fast. So that was a nice surprise. Wifey and I came here for a special occasion. Appetizer of choice- Parmesan Zucchini Spears perfect! It tasted fresh and you can actually tell that it's a zucchini, the panko breading was just the perfect crispy cover for those little guys. Main course was Grilled Vegetable and Goat Cheese Sandwich. Now don't get me wrong, this sandwich was good. But I think I read into the description a little more than I should. Each bite I took was cool chilly refreshing but for some reason I was expecting a little warm sandwich. I forget that some sandwiches come cold and that little guy just perplexed me because it just reminds of taking a sip of sprite and finding out that it's water. There's nothing wrong with it, just unexpected. I felt so dumb because wifey had to school me about the sandwich. The shoestring fries that came along with the sandwich was tasty, but less than warm so that was a bummer. Dessert- Red Velvet Cupcake. Ummm, yeah okay. Still undecided. Wait- before you bring out your pitch forks, I'm not really a fan of red velvet, but it doesn't mean that I'm going to stop myself from trying it. So for now, it's like I'm dating every red velvet out there until I find that perfect one. Service was great. Our server was nice and very mindful of my wifey's glass of water and kept it full. Whew, I was able to drink my water in peace and not have to worry about saving it for her since she drinks like a fish out of water. For a Monday, it was actually busy and from the looks, the people who were here were regulars- mostly older adults and families.

Most of the strength of this review is based on the past and not today, and that is really a shame. CJ today probably rates 3 stars, CJ of 10 years ago was a 5 star rating for me. I am really a longtime devotee of Claim Jumper, having been to more than 20 of their locations in 5 states and all over California. For years my road trips to the bay area were punctuated by stops in Fresno or Concord to make my CJ runs. Carlsbad was my halfway to San Diego lunch spot. A few years ago CJ fell on hard times and was sold to Landry's who own a variety of chains including Chart House and Bubba Gump Shrimp co, etc. In the process of going bankrupt, CJ closed a number of my favorite locations, Fresno, Mission Viejo among them. They also played a little with the menu deleting a couple of long time favorites and changing the portion size or composition of a few others. Thankfully they recognized axing the cheese potatocakes was a foolish decision and these have since reappeared on the menu, but some of the changes, little things like going from Helen Grace hot fudge on the worlds smallest sundae to no name brand, definitely took away from the CJ experience. ( in fairness this was done long before the sale of the chain, it was just a bad decision IMHO). The current menu still offers many of my old favorites, a Club Sandwich the size of a house, black tie pasta, almost my favorite mozzarella stick from any restaurant, and a good menu steak choices which offer value for the price, but the CJ experience of 5 or 10 years ago is not the experience of today. Almost everything from the waitstaff quality which was previously, in my opinion, industry best, has suffered a little with the bankruptcy. It has been a slow erosion, and I have not stayed away completely, but I find more of my business goes elsewhere today than it did in the past, and I find myself thinking how much I miss the CJ I found when I first moved to California in the late 90s.

Said it was a 25 minute wait. Waited 45, then asked how much longer it would be. She said they called our name (didn't) and informed me that the buzzer doesn't work... Umm. Why do they give out buzzers if they don't work? Anyways, food is great and our server was nice, but it was crowded (not their fault) but we waited in the cold for a long time unnecessarily.

I went to Claim Jumper for the Happy Hour specials and was pleasantly surprised at how yummy everything was! I had the $6 coconut shrimp plate which comes with 4 nice sized shrimp and a tasty cilantro Asian dipping sauce and slaw in the middle. Other items ordered at my table were the Irish fries $4 and calamari which was also $4. The calamari was okay. Not the best and not the worst. The fries were good. Someone also ordered the Asian glazed wings, which were delicious, and sliders and a burger entitled the widow maker, lol. Everything was pretty adorable and tasty. The service was great and friendly. I just wish they had bigger tables in the bar. Our little plates of everything took up the whole table.

I have to update my review..I came back to CJ this past weekend and once again, was so pleased and delighted by their restaurant and menu. The service is so nice and friendly. Constantly refilling your drinks and making sure that your food is excellent. The food is delicious..they have a wide variety of menu options. It is satisfying, American food, while tasting light and fresh. -Sesame Steak (comes with your choice of bread, salad or soup, and a side). The steak was fresh and delicious..the break was light, fluffy, and warm, the salad was plentiful (with mushrooms, homemade crutons and other veggies). -Seasonal Berry Salad: Fresh mixed greens with strawberries, goat cheese, carmelized walnuts (or pecans??), chicken. Fresh, flavorful, enjoyable. -Tuna Sandwich: Large portion! The bread is DELICIOUS..with roasted tomatos baked into it. Plentiful on their tuna, with veggies and fresh fruit. -Red Velvet Cupcake: Surprisingly fab! Very moist and airy..but not overly sweet.

Always an amazing dining experience, love CJ's! Here are my top five reasons why: 1. Great happy hour, especially during football season. Lots of TVs! 2. Caesar Salad, homemade croutons, crisp romaine, delicious dressing, need I say more? 3. Free wifi 4. Excellent service 5. A menu that caters to every stomach

Everything was quite good. Service, food, etc. The only reason for losing a star is because my steak was more of a raw/rare then medium rare. Other than that, great compared to past visits!

I've been visiting CJ's since my sister worked here in the late 90's. I've consistently experienced excellent service, paired with large plates of above-average food. For a typical weekend dinner, expect a huge wait in upwards of 30 minutes to an hour (unless you get there really early or really late). You can always try to find your own seating in the bar area or pizza parlor. I'd always try to go for the bar to avoid waits and because CJ's is great for happy hour discounts. For appetizers, I enjoy the fried calamari and find their spinach artichoke to be one of my favorites. Clam chowder is an easy side or meal, depending on your appetite. For main dishes, I enjoy the Roasted Tri-Tip, one of their pasta dishes, or the widow-maker burger. Expect huge dishes and leftovers for your next meal whenever ordering.

Great food!! Our server Ryan was attentive and helped us pick some great plates. Potato cakes are my absolute favorite! Usually get a steak when I dine here but this time ended up getting the chicken (via Ryan's suggestion) which had veggies and I substituted the potato cakes instead of mashed potatoes. we ended our meal with the chocolate chip calzone which I have to suggest everyone to try!!

Well, over all it gets a "C+" at best. I'm adding the "+" because of the large amounts of food and the place isn't the worst, but I'm not impressed. Claim Jumpers has its moments like an éclair the size of a shoe or a slice of cake for one that feeds a party of four. But in the end, what do you have; an "ok" restaurant that has large portions as their claim to fame but the food is not that "Fabulous". The Mac and Cheese was as good as a box of Kraft from home so it gets a "D"... the Three Cheese Potato cakes with Cheddar, jack and aged Parmesan cheese, creamy mashed potatoes, onions, dill and cilantro lightly breaded and fried crisp with salsa ranch for $6.99 were tasty and I liked them the best "B-"... the full rack of baby back Ribs were just "pretty good" in the flavor department, but just a bit dry- but not too much, at $23.99 I wasn't too impressed but I'll give them a "C+" tops. The conclusion was the Warm English Toffee Cake; a rich brown sugar and date cake ( very moist ) nestled in warm toffee sauce ( that tasted burnt ) with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream $4.49 and a "C+" I'm so tired of going out to eat and not having the food dance in my mouth like a rave club full of happy people. But someone has to do the heavy lifting and help warn the masses of Foodies out there. If your're hungry and want lots of "OK" food...go for it.

Since the Torrance location shut down, the closest location is the Long Beach one. On my birthday month, they sent me a coupon for a free entree! hooray! We came here with the family and prepared to chow down to a good darn meal. I ordered the Trio combination. Ribs, baby back ribs, and roast chicken. Every thing was way too dry and hard and "over roasted" BBQ until its dark and dry.. Yuck! Everything my family ordered from the pasta (pasta was cold) to more ribs were really, NG (Not Good)! yelp.com/biz_photos/2c-W… The only thing that was good was the Mint chip mud pie.. yum! I appreciated the free meal, but very disappointed in the quality of food. Although large portions were given, but how do you consume?? :-( I used to love Claim Jumper back in the days. Entrees was Larger portion, (yes, larger portion then even the now size), food and service was great! Seems like with all the competition going around, they have gone down.

They recently remodeled and updated their menu - you get less portions now. The remodel takes away from the nostalgia and makes the restaurant much louder now. Got kids? Watch for the wood work and corners in the booths. I do recommend their artichoke appetizer and French onion soup!! Salads are great, too, though be sure to get the dressing on the side unless you like it doused in dressing.

The food at Claim Jumper is wonderful and the customer service is excellent. My mom and I came in around 3:00 today. The table where we were seated was unclean but we brought it to the hostess attention and it was cleaned immediately by the manager. My mom politely reminded them that we write reviews after every visit and we received top notched attention. We ordered Southwest Eggrolls which we never received and were not charged for. We also ordered two side salads and a chicken pot pie which we shared. The chicken pot pie was scrumptious and very comforting. It was definitely enough for two people. A little side note it looked as if the African Americans were all being seated in one section only. I hope this not the case. I did walk the restaurant and my premise appeared to be correct. I don't know but you should check for yourself. Our sever Eldon was excellent!

The worst service I have had at a claim jumper! My wife use to work at one and was in disbelief that a server could be that bad after having to go through the training that they do. The server was a gay man which doesn't matter unless you show it and display it. I don't care if your straight or gay just serve me my food and do your job! We will never go back to this one again unless this guy is fired!

I went here for my friend's birthday, and it was good overall. The place looks great inside and very clean, and the atmosphere is quite cozy. We got seated promptly, and our server was friendly and knowledgeable. As for the food, it was ok. I had the tri tip, but it was not the best I've had. It was very chewy and tough, which is not what I like when it comes to tri tip. The side portion sizes were very reasonable though. Moreover, many items on the menu are quite pricey, but there a few things you can get for less than $15. I did appreciate the service. Our server made sure to check up on us often and generously supplied us with what we needed. All in all: great service in a great atmosphere, with mediocre food.

CJs is great if you want a lot, I mean a lot, of food leftover, or if you are a gluttonous pig. The happy hour menu has changed for the better with More variety at different price points. The menu seems to also change which is great! Not a whole lot of healthy options but I guess you aren't really a health nut if you come here often.....CJs is a-ok!

I used to live close by and used to come here 2-3 times per month a long time ago and moved to the other end of long beach. I always remembered everyone being so nice and the food being so delicious. I came here again tonight and was reminded of how great the food is, how reasonable the prices are and how nice the servers are. I had chicken pot pie which was amazing. My kids had spaghetti with Alfredo sauce. Her she got two sides.. French fries and Mac n cheese. Her side of mac n cheese was as big as another restaurants full order of Mac n cheese. All this and a drink for $5.99 per kid. Can't beat that price. Our servers name was Cory S. He was so patient. My son took 3-4 minutes deciding on what drink he wanted and the server patiently waited. As busy as it seemed (6p on a Sunday night), we got seated quickly and got our good really fast as well. Cory was on top of the drink refills as well. It makes me think we may have to make the long haul across long beach to start coming back.

Was in yesterday around 1:00 p.m. Easy parking, no wait (large building) Friendly efficient staff. Server came over right away and drinks were served promptly Wife ordered salad bar with soup, I ordered salad bar, daughter ordered mini three cheese pizza. Salad bar was OK. Items were fresh and well stocked.. Not a crazy amount of items to choose from, but what is crazy is there are no cards to tell what is in the bowls! Many concoctions with nary a description to be found anywhere. I asked our server who told us she had been working there for several years and has never seen any labels. Makes no sense to me. Take a bite to see if you like it or what it even is? Come on. IMO management is just too lazy to put cards up, as menu items change. Only negative food wise was the "hot" bacon dressing. Hot it was not..more like a luke warm gel barely covering the bottom of the container. I tried several items and most were good....just wish I knew what they were LOL. I did appreciate the top notch dressings..an area where many restaurants skimp to save a few pennies. Daughters pizza was very good. Server was top notch. My low rating is based on the prices being charged here as well as no labels on the salad bar. $10.99 for the salad bar, add $3.00 for ONE bowl of soup makes the Soup Plantation seems like a steal. Pizza was also a tad high. Haven't been to a Claim Jumpers in years ..I remember they were a tad pricey but many items on the menu were high...for the salad bar/soup they are WAAAY over priced. A shame since staff are quite good, (at least the ones who were working around us today) the building/environment is good as well as the quality of the food. I may be back to try another item..choosing price carefully. Not a cheapskate by any means...but value matters to me. I see no value in Claim Jumpers.

this claim jumpers is as good as it gets when it comes to chains. my hubby and i were greeted, seat, and drink orders taken with in 10 min of entering. the food was hot and prepared as we requested. the waitress was very nice and knowledge. Great steaks and wine! Thanks cj!!

  • UrbanJane D.

It's obvious that management has cut back on the number of wait staff here. There is now a looong wait to have your order taken, have your water glass refilled, or get extra napkins. The servers appear to be crazy-busy, with lots of tables to take care of! You'll notice that only the happy hour menus list drink prices. The full menu contains an extensive list of cocktails, but no prices are listed for those - beware! Of course, the large servings of food and the comfy booths continue to draw loyal fans. Just don't go there when you are in a hurry.

I meet with my girls here about once a quarter for happy hour in the lounge. Their happy hour specials are the best in the area. I only come here for those and have been very satisfied. The other thing CJ has going for it is its awesome salad bar.

    1) Pros: Food is some of the best in town by fare. 2) Pros: Friendly service. 3) Cons: DIRTY let me warn you don't sit out side they never clean. 4) Cons: If you sit out side you will be the last people served often forgotten completely.

Claim Jumper used to have one of the best happy hours out there, but not no more. The happy hour menu is about half the size and the portions seem to have gotten smaller. The hot wings are not as good as it used to be. My beer was warm. The first sign that things have changed is that it's definitely not as crowded as it used to be. Every time I would come in there would be a wait and the bar would be packed. The last couple of time there was no wait and the restaurant has been half full at best. Low and behold I find out that Claim Jumper has been bought by Landry's. The same people who own Bubba Gump, Rainforest Cafe, the Chart House, among others. Not only is Claim Jumper now a corporate chain along with the Red Lobsters and the Olive Gardens of the world, it now tastes like a corporate chain too. (See my Chart House yelp) It is sad to see what has become of CJ. The service is still good though and the management is attentive.

I hadn't been here in a long long long time and for some reason I always get it mixed up with Outback.. but we were driving out of Naples and Belmont Shore headed to the freeway and saw it there... and we were hungry and I thought I remembered they had good seafood.. so we said.. ok, let's do it! The parking is in the Marketplace and is shared with several other big chain eateries.. so finding a spot took a minute. The wait wasn't long by comparison to Yard House, Tequila Jacks, Bubba Gumps, Outback, On The Border, PF Changs... usually those can be an hour... this was about 15 minutes.. the decor is like a mountain lodge... kinda cute.. reminded me of the spaghetti factory in that themey kinda way... the server i got didn't know how to open a bottle of wine and then didn't pour a taste first... but i didn't make her feel bad about it... the salads took a long time to come out... usually you order salad and it's right back to you pretty fast... the dressing was heavy on both the Caesar and the garden, but they were fresh and crisp... The spacing between the salads arriving and the entree's was too short... so we were hardly done with them when the entree's arrived.. which is just bad timing in the kitchen OR she put them in all at the same time or something... Lobster tail was good... Parmesan Shrimp was good... cheese bread = too salty... stick with rolls... no room for dessert... portions were big... The selection is pretty good, the prices are on par with the restaurants mentioned above... somewhere under PF Changs and above Tequila Jacks... I didn't dislike it.. it just didn't wow me in any way shape or form... but i guess chains are chains... the main thing with a place like this is that you really aren't taking much of a risk.. you know what you are going to get and it won't be bad.... it just won't make anyone rave and praise.. sometimes i am in the mood to try the hole in the wall thai spot, sometimes the posh french place with the insane zagat rating and sometimes you just want to know you won't be totally freaked out by your choice and you go with the known.... chains fill that need.. so rock on, claim jumper!

The food and service was OK but our server did not thank us, she did not pay attention to us, (Mary) and it seemed like she was rushing us to leave so that she could check out. I'm a bartender, my boyfriend is a server, we have both been in the service industry for over ten years and we know when someone is pushing us to leave and we were not happy about that. We left a 20% tip and still did not receive acknowledgment, a simple thank you would have made us feel a lot better but we did not even get that. Once we paid she was gone. This was my mom's first visit not to mention it was her birthday and I was truly embarrassed for recommending it. P.S. maybe she thought we weren't going to tip because we are Hispanic. I suggest you go if you are not expecting much. Try take out :)

I also frequented this restaurant many times over the past few years. Initially, I was quite impressed with the service, atmosphere, food quality and selection, and cleanliness. However, I visited late last night with a friend after seeing a great movie in the area. This time, I was very disappointed. Hostess was not attentive since we arrived 30 minutes prior to closing. We did get seated and immediately opted for the Produce Bar which is my favorite choice. The server finally approached us to take our drink order. He also was not attentive and either was very tired after a arduous night's work or was stoned (my friend's opinion). I had to remind him that we get a choice of bread with the produce bar. He also did not bring me ice for my water when I requested this. Over the years, items once offered at the Produce Bar have slowly disappeared. The quality is still very good but the value for your money has diminished considerably. Cost of the produce bar is almost $20.00 / person. Service has also suffered over time and I do not believe that management properly trains the employees to afford great service here. My loyalty to this restaurant is ebbing. I can really do much better by preparing quality and cost effective meals and salads at home. This particular restaurant may have seen the last of me.

Great Steak & Pasta... Unfortunately I don't get to come here as often as I use to. Since they closed their location in Torrance I've only made the trip out to Long Beach maybe twice in the past year. Anyways everytime I'm here I never go wrong with the 12oz Ribeye well done, so Juicy and Succulent, YUMMM... But if you're not a Carnivore like myself then I recommend the next best thing, The Black Tie Pasta, nicely coated with tasty Alfredo Sauce and Flavorful peices of Blackened Chicken with just a slight kick. I must say though it's a bit on the pricey side but in my experience its been worth it : )

Ordered fish and after eating half of it, my wife took it away from me. She said it smelled rotten and it was grey/black in color. I was sick for over a week. Why do they have to serve shit like that? The bald manager didn't even look shocked when I told him and he agreed with my wife about it being rotten.

Mmmmmmm Claim Jumper. Their food is so tasty here. There's so many items to choose from it's almost too hard! Love: Beef & Bird, French Onion Soup, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Chocolate Motherlode Cake, any of their beef items yummmm, Mashed potatoes, cheesy bread! It would be a five star review but their service lacks from time to time.

Went over on Fathers Day a busy day for the restaurant industry. Wife and I arrived at 11 am, got to sit at the bar section, other tables required reservations that day. Cassandra was our attentive waitress, even though the place was filling up fast, with wanna be dads and regular dads. Waitress did a good job. The Western Egg Roll, we ordered as appetizers were ample enough for two having dinner. I ordered Tri tip dinner and wife the Country fried steak. Both are generous dishes, that are difficult to finish all at one sitting. I wished I could have had more Tri Tips on the Mash Potato bed with all those mushrooms. I was unable to finish all the mash potato's and mushrooms. Wife had lots of food on the plate, she was not able to eat it all, and had to have a take-out box, to finish the dish later. Cassandra cleared the dishes herself, the bus boy entered the room, looked around, and walked out with out picking up any dishes. Cassandra did not complain, she just went on taking care of customers and picking up the plates. By the time we were going out the lobby at 11:55 am, the lobby was packed and waiting time was approaching 1 hour, I heard people say, that did not have reservations. I would come again, on a less busier day. I would give a 5 star rating to waitress Cassandra but a 0 star rating to bus boy who just walked into the bar room section, looked around and walked right out

Pretty good. The chocolate motherlode cake is amazing. The rest of the food is good but nothing special. Portions don't seem to be very large and they don't bring you can bread for dinner (maybe they will if you ask but I didn't ask). Service was quick, attentive, and friendly, however.

The past few times I've been here, I've never had a problem with waiting for a table. I remember that the menu used to be much bigger as well as the portions but i may be confused with Cheesecake factory. I used to order their Jambalaya but it's not on their menu anymore! :( Anyway, my boyfriend and I came here last night for a late night dinner. I ordered the Hickory Chicken with a cup of New England Clam Chowder. It was all good except that the soup was a bit on the salty side. Maybe it was close to the end of the night and I had the end of the pot? My boyfriend ordered the tilapia dish with shrimp. It was good too. Overall, the food was good and the service was good. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert but usually we would have ordered the chocolate motherload to bring home.

The service was slow considering there werent that many people in the bar. My cosmopolitan was weak (both of them were actually) The zucchini on the happy hour menu was good though! I would recommend the zucchini--Claim jumper, I'm not sure I would go back.....

I haven't been to Claim Jumper in years, partially because i've pledged allegiance to other establishments like Lucille's for their ribs. But I came here a few days ago with my grandma because she told me they apparently have a new recipe for their ribs. When you hear this, you think it's a much improved, better-than-ever recipe...right?! Wrong. Our server told us they changed their recipe a few months ago, and said they were super good, so I expected something good. But when I got it, all I could think of was "wow, this looks really dry." First impressions are often correct, because the meat on the bone was so incredibly hard, tough and dry! The meat didn't fall off the ribs, it was stuck there and I had to take a knife to actually take it off. So, in essence, I was totally disappointed! If it tasted really delicious, i'd totally come back and tell all my friends about their new ribs recipe. But that's not going to happen anytime soon. Hey, at least the fries are good!

Pretty typical for a Claim Jumper-- that is, average average average. The menu in the old days used to focus on ZOMG PRIME RIB, but checking the menu on this visit showed a distressing absence of prime rib! ;_; We weren't all that hungry anyway, we ended up with soup (clam chowder was plenty okay but nothing more) and the appetizer platter, which was entirely deep-fried and again, entirely average, The cheesy bread is pretty good, though. Service wasn't bad either. Just wish I could get excited about this place like I used to when I was a little kid... sadly those days seem to be long gone.

My bill was $22 and they charged my $44. They did not see the mistake I made. They should have. All because of the that stupid tip line. The waiter did not come back to our table, so we had to go to the front. The front guy did not know what he was doing. Fighting it would take weeks. They don't deserve the overpay I made, nor the tip of $2 that I was ORIGINALLY going to give !!!

On my top ten list of chain restaurants. I could come here five times a week for a month and still never order the same meal. The menu is huge, they have lots of choices and the staff here at the Long Beach location are extremely nice and helpful and are really deserving of a bigger than normal tip.

Short review today. Our service was decent. She was nice and refilled my water at least once. We did wait a little while since we were seated all the way in the back corner. I got the french dip which interestingly enough is cooked in French Onion brother. I think it definitely added to the flavor. I also got the Cheddar Potato soup which is very cheesy. All in all this is a great place for comfort food and the portions are so big you can take some home for lunch the next day.

Disclaimer: I will NEVER be a fan of a place that makes you wait when there are clearly open tables AND have servers that would go out of their way to sit you in the back next to a rowdy family of 8. So bf and I got here around 7-ish. The place isn't exactly empty so I took it as a sign that the food must be good. But then again, I should probably have learned from my Olive Garden experience that a busy restaurant does not necessarily equate to great food. So we were told that there is a wait even though we can see that there are open tables. We were told that the bar has open spaces and that if we prefer to go there, the menu is the same. I told them no, I want a table. However we were given a crappy table in the back. The bar probably would have been a better choice. So we ordered our drinks. The bf got his usual diet Coke and I got a Strawberry Lemonade. There was lemon slice on the diet Coke, weird. The Strawberry Lemonade came out looking like a margarita, with salt and all. Didn't order appetizers but probably should have since the food took a little a while to be served. They have a vegetarian and gluten-free section on their menu. I was tempted to order something vegetarian but bf and i like sharing plates so I know it'd probably make him a little unhappy to not have meat. I ended up getting the Whiskey-Apple Glazed Chicken and he got the Halibut and chips. My order came out as described on the menu. Two pieces of chicken, some veggies, potato with gravy, some stuffing, and a giant biscuit with butter on the side. I took my first bite of the chicken and it tasted like apple pie. No kidding. If you like sweet dishes, then this ones for you. There was also a hint of whiskey. The portions are big but they give you the option to order the "lighter" version. Overall, I'd say it's iffy service combined with good food.

The last time I ate at the Claim Jumper restaurant in Long Beach, California, and all the previous times, the food and the service were simply outstanding. Not so at the present. My girlfriend and I had lunch there yesterday and the service was still as good as it always has been, but the food was really poor. My girlfriend had the cheddar baked potato soup and I had the clam chowder, and then we both had the chicken fried steak. My soup was fine, but the cheddar was missing the usual cheese streaks and the taste was lackluster. Both of our chicken fried steaks were cold, as were the potatoes that accompanied them. The management did immediately replace them with hot food, but the taste was just not good. On the plate, under my French fries, the old, brownish oil was clearly evident, and the taste of the food was that of old, burnt oil. The manager told us they had been bought by another company and they were no longer owned by the same firm that had them the last time we had eaten there, and, frankly, it was clear that things had changed.

Always have loved the Claim Jumper since I was a kid! The portions are not quite as out-of-control as they once were, but maybe that's not a bad thing. Their happy hour is really great--if you can find a seat. I love their Widow-maker burger, country-fried steak, ALL of their deserts (especially the Brownie Finale), and I even really like the produce bar (their version of an all-you-can-eat salad bar). I just wish there was one closer to us and more of them in general (like the good ol' days).
