Decent food but the service was HORRIBLE. Don't sit outside because your server will not pay attention to you. The manager was nice enough to give us free parking which doesn't save the entire dinner but it was nice. The server (don't even know his name because he never told us) didn't ask us if we ever wanted refills on drinks and blatantly disregarded our request to have all food brought out at the same time including the appetizers. Not worth the money but the view is pretty cool.

Great service and beautiful view! Other than that, nothing special. The food is just ok! It can get very packed and noisy! If you are going just for the view make sure you get a table at the front and go on a clear day otherwise you may not even get to experience that! Overpriced and overrated!

Is this place a joke? How do you get away with serving mediocre Sushi in LA? Seriously. Beautiful location though. Worth a visit, just don't get high expectations about the food.

Came here w the BF last night. Beautiful building, gorgeous views of LA and gardens. Hence, the two stars. Otherwise, it's unreasonably pricey with Mediocre sushi. Got 8 pieces of sushi and one beer. $65. Really? Really. Ok, then.

My girlfriend and I came here to celebrate our first year together. I had no problems at all making a reservation for 2 with a scenic view during peak hours. I did call in about a month ahead mind you. Traffic was more fun than usual so we ended up arriving about 30 mins late, but no hiccups once we were on site. In my opinion the feel and decor of this place are ten times better than the view =P formal and intimate but at the same time there are plenty of casual large groups located towards the middle doing their thing. I was very impressed with the portions as well as the flavor and presentation. This is the first fusion type place that ive actually enjoyed! highly recommend the American beef wagyu steak if you're hungry. It's very tender and makes for a nice balanced meal. it's also shareable ! Dinner ended with nice little surprise. Thanks Yamashiro, we'll be back.

The location was superb! Unfortunately, the food and service were lacking quite a bit. My boyfriend and I stopped by this restaurant last night and the view was amazing! You can see the skyline of DTLA and walk through the gardens they've set up. Valet is $9 (a bit pricey). Once seated, it took our server a while to take our order. You must try the Uni Roll, Crab Cakes and Oyster Shooters! Other rolls and entrees we've tried didn't taste too good. It's mainly Japanese-American food here. Nonetheless, glad to have visited here as experience, but if you wanted to try out authentic Japanese food, I'd advise you to go elsewhere.

The views here are breathtaking! I highly recommend going here if you're trying to impress a date/showing family around town. It's simply stunning! They also have a beautiful garden that you can walk around to take pictures and grab different angles of the city below. The food is good, the dessert is better, and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant is quite large and laid out impressively. They have great drinks so I definitely recommend trying one of their signatures. Unfortunately they are only open for dinner so make sure you arrive after 5!

Amazing views of the city - great drinks! Will def be back ;)

YELP INSIDER TIP FROM DOREEN (AKA AZN PERSUASION): Come for the view/ambiance. Food is fine/good. ***** The first time I came here was for dineLA a few years ago and I thought it was just fine. The second time I came here, I tried more of the food and I actually liked a few of the dishes as they were fun/different and pretty good - such as the crispy chicken which is like a chicken tender but with rice puffs on it kinda like rice crispy. The event planning staff here is top notch and solid if you ever want to have an event here.

I had been here many years ago and decided to go again. Well, the view is very nice if you're outside. We weren't asked for our preference on seating , therefore were seated in the garden room (much quieter and darker for romantic couples, although we were there as a family) The food was ok- for the price they charge- could have been much better.( I had the black cod entree)none of my family members were happy abt their food ( fillet mignon, sushi, and brazen baby ribs . The waiter forgot about our appetizers and it never arrived, and she didn't even apologize. One thing I liked was my drink- raspberry lemon drop. If you want to enjoy the view- it's worth going.

I should have trusted the reviews.... This place is only nice for the view. Service is really bad, they never come check up on you. I ordered the crunchy roll and it was so disappointing. My friend ordered the black cod and it was okay. They need to change things up in the place, because I definitely won't be coming here again

This review is based on the fact that I came here for my company holiday party aka didn't have to pay for food, drinks or valet so I can't really determine the true value of this place. It was pretty empty for a Friday night. We got a preset menu. I ordered the Cod fish and thought it was really delicious except I wasn't crazy about the sauce. The sauce tasted very.."we want to appeal to the masses so let's just stick in a sweet sauce" to the fish. The fish was so soft and moist that I didn't even have to chew my food. I just swallowed and inhaled it all! The chocolate soufflé was to dieeeee for. It might be the best dessert I ever had at a non-dessert restaurant type of place. Restaurant is extremely beautiful inside and out. Obviously the view is 5 stars. It's so romantic and you can take a nice stroll around the restaurant. The guests are all dressed super fancily. But I can't get over how empty it was. Perhaps there is a reason.

A little taste of Japan from a great view of LA! "Yama" which means mountain and "shiro" which means palace, defines the sheer beauty of this restaurant. With the elegant Japanese inspired architecture and decor to the luxurious menu, this was definitely a feast for the eyes. I came here on pre-thanksgiving with my boyfriend, Allan B., and we had an 8 o'clock reservation which was perfect because we were a few minutes early and took some time to enjoy the view. The staff were cordial and attentive. We started with the ahi poke which came with tempura chips, I ordered the shoyu black cod with wasabi mashed potatos, and Allan had the Himalayan Wagyu beef. We ended our meal with the smores. I highly recommend everything we ordered, exquisite flavor and not too filling, just right. The bathrooms were located downstairs, which I would have given one star off because it was inconvenient to have to trek up and down a flight of stairs, but I don't think it's that bad if you want to burn a couple calories. There's a valet for $8, no self parking. Make sure to take panoramic pictures and give the view the justice it deserves. Thanks Yamashiro Hollywood for a majestic night!

The first time I came here was when I was a young girl and my dad had brought our family here. I remember the view being absolutely gorgeous and fancy so I decided to pay another visit recently for my anniversary, some 15 years later. The view is still as beautiful as possible even with that obnoxious "trailer park" sign. The courtyard is such a beautiful seating area, though we didn't sit there. It's so peaceful that it makes you want to use the restroom even if you don't have to go (the entrance to the restrooms are in the courtyard... Not that that it's PEEsful) The reason I won't give it 5 stars is that the menu is somewhat limited and expensive for what it is. My boyfriend and I ordered entrees, so I can't say how the rolls are. You're definitely paying more for the view and ambiance than for memorable food. The dessert is however on point. When I came here for the first time, I remember ordering a mango sorbet that came in a frozen mango shell. I had to get it again, because it was THAT memorable and delicious. I got the trio of sorbets, which are made in-house, and just as I had remembered --delicious!! Can't say I'll be a regular of this place for dinner, but I would say it is quite a nice place to stop by for dessert or maybe a drink.

We celebrated my out-of-town mother-in-law's 85th birthday here, and we were all impressed. It was our first visit there. === Service === The service was such a nice change from the "Oh, how is everything" every 2 minutes we normally see in SoCal. The waiter was completely relaxed and showed no urgency that we had to place an order, yet once the order was placed it was promptly delivered. He told us that he had been employed there for 12 years and that there was very low employee turnover, which I believe is a good sign that the staff is being treated fairly. He was very informative and answered our first-timer questions about the restaurant's history. === Food === The food was just the right portion size that we fell full but not overstuffed. I had the salmon/mashed potatoes/asparagus, and even for this staple, it far exceeded my expectations. They turned a normal dish into a masterpiece. My wife had babyback ribs and they were very tasty too. Luckily the hot sauce was on the side, as it was very hot. === Ambience/View === We enjoyed the view of Hollywood throughout the dinner. This is definitely a place to take someone whom you wish to impress. Make sure that you set aside some time either before dinner or afterwards to walk through the gardens, which are down slope from the restaurant. There's also an inner courtyard, which is partially covered, open-air. While that area looks nice, there's no view. === Parking === There is only Valet parking available.

Came here for my birthday a while back and there are only a few reasons I would return. The view at night is amazing. It's obviously not as high as going to the Observatory, but you have a pretty good view of LA and you can see pretty far. The food and service were both decent. The quality was better than average but the dishes didn't really stand out. The appetizers and entrees that we ordered weren't memorable. Our waiter was friendly, but he didn't really seem engaged in his job which we could definitely sense. Our table was literally in the corner so I felt a little squished. Make sure you have cash for valet! I'm not sure if they take card or not but I always like to tip valet using cash.

Oh my crabcakes, what is this place? Like, for serious, it actually exists? I cannot get over the level of amazeballs on every level. Lessee here: DECOR: Epcot Center-like recreation of a Japanese temple complete with pool and pagoda. Soft, dim, romantic lighting. VIEW: Want some stunning with your panorama? You got it! STAFF: I like being waited on by people I can see myself getting a beer with. 'Nuff said. FOOD: Oh, food. Food, food, food. Let's break this bad boy down by dish: Truffle Hamachi: Melt-in-your-mouth slices of the greatest fish Mother Nature ever produced fused with the essence of the greatest fungus Mother Nature ever produced. Your only crime is not ordering seconds Vegetable Platter: Garlic French beans, grilled asparagus, maitake mushrooms and shisito peppers. Simply seasoned, crunchy as hell, grilled to perfection Pistachio Salmon: I will never look at this nut the same way again. And I used to look at it with love. Now it's something akin to adoration Spicy Yellowtail: See Truffle Hamachi--swap out "fungus" for "spice" Forbidden Rice Roll: Why are all the rolls so creative and multi-ingrediented and interesting and om nom nom nom....? Reclining Buddha: The previous roll more or less wiped my food motherboard of any ability to process new food for about 5 minutes, so my memory of the ingredients in this roll is fuzzy. However, I do remember enjoying it muchly Wagyu Beef: The Wagyu is debatable (see FDA laws), but the tenderness of the cow was not Strawberry Donuts: Not my first choice, but chewy doughiness at its best Dessert Sushi: Fresh fruit arranged in sushi-like forms with rice pudding and misc other things, each component just as lightly, delicately flavored as their savory counterparts. Oh Jebus, how I wrecked this thing The cocktails were the only part of the menu that were lacking. We tried a bunch (mine was the Lychee Yuzu) and they were all a little too Tiki for me (i.e. heavy on the sweetness, strong on the alcohol, light on the wowza). I'd recommend getting wine or tea instead. By far the best place I dined at of my trips to LA. I love when ostentation is done right.

Went here for the first time since hearing about it 30 years ago. It was about what I expected. Beautiful decor, fantastic views and mediocre food, relative to the price paid. I was disappointed in my vodka martini since it was practically room temperature. I so do not recommend ordering the sushi dessert since it's filled with rice pudding and not that flavorful and satisfying after dinner. The Black Sea bass was delightful though. The staff I found young and could have been more professional. Owners need to work on training but then again, this place will always keep em coming in so perhaps not necessary from a business perspective. Don't think will be back unless entertaining out of town guests.

Tourist trap. Visiting LA for work, someone suggested to go here. The views were definitely nice and ambiance was overall pretty nice. They had everyone packed onto one side of restaurant, the gardens were wide open- no tables had people. The service was nice and quick. The food was way below par. Im not crazy into sushi but my husband is- so im am easy date, edamame and a phili roll... but nope, they dont make anything on site with cheese so I settled for a California roll... and the beans were off. Maybe freezer burn or maybe stuck at bottom of pit all day. For real, ive never complained about beans. His food, he said was ok, but he never complains. Worth going to see view- but have a drink and a small app and bounce. Avoid the $100 bill for bland, below par food.

Place is gorgeous. View is amazing. Food is not so good. Ribs were previously cooked, warmed up and served. Not worth the price.

I've heard nothing but great things about this place, so I was excited to join my friends for dinner for her birthday party. It was at night, so that being said from what I could see the property is very beautiful and well maintained. The inside looks and feels very historic. The views are beyond impressive. So wished I took my camera with me. The service was awesome and the food was great. The portions and prices were right on par with any establishment of this caliber. The atmosphere is nice without being stuffy. Our server really rocked. All and all it was a great experience and I would highly recommend it. I will say that I nee to go back during the summer when the days are longer to fully appreciate the grounds.

Went there 3/8/15 for International Women's Day with my wife. We made reservations for 6pm which was perfect as we got there early enough to explore the grounds beforehand and the restaurant was fairly empty initially. Plus by the time dessert arrived, we were able to enjoy the city light view after dark. As many reviewers have stated, one comes here more for the ambiance and experience more than for its hit-and-miss food. We started off with edamame as an appetizer which was very disappointing-- not properly cooked and the chipotle sauce did not enhance the dish at all... we've done better with microwaved Trader Joe's frozen edamame. The short rib appetizer was pretty good though although you get only two small ribs. My wife's Reclining Buddha sushi roll was rather unpalatable... the radish taste was too overwhelming. She also tried the crunchy roll which was just average. She's pregnant so we couldn't try any raw items. My shoyu glazed black cod was delicious though-- perfectly cooked and the sautéed mustard greens, maitake mushrooms and wasabi mashed potatoes complimented the dish well. They give you a soy daikon sauce to pour over the dish and it was very flavorful. We ended with a s'mores brownie with graham cracker and ice cream which was good as well. The service was cordial and at par with a fine dining establishment. So overall, it was a decent dinner but I doubt we'll be back for a while. However, it's a good tourist attraction so if you have out-of-town guests and $$ to spend, it's not a bad option.

Very Expensive, but I was impressed with the flavor palette. It was my 30th Birthday and we had our 5 month old in tote and the even turnout wonderful. The drinks were great and the service was very friendly. My husband and I made reservations very early so that we would not be a bother to other patrons who do not care to eat next to a baby. Worked out perfectly because no one eats that early so we got a lot of personal attention. I was expecting the grounds to be bigger and the garden to be more expansive, but it's LA and space is at a premium. Drinks were awesome. I love the Moscow mule. Don't walk off with their cup they put a 50 dollar hold on your card just in case you grow fond of the copper cup. Mai Thai was good too. They give you a nice tall glass for that one. I dinged the pace for the steak, not the best steak. I like Ruth Chris better. SUSHi: I could just come here for the sushi! We had the Black Forbidden Rice Roll. The spicy tuna was so good. You could tell it was real tuna. We also had the Reclining Buddha Roll - I was really impressed with the textures and flavors in this roll. Definitely , better than your standard roll. Appetizers - Crab cakes were fresh and were not oily at all. They were lightly pan fried. Entree - I was not impressed with the Filet Mignon it was chewy and was not flavorful. I could have gotten a better steak from Ruth Chris. I should have gotten something else that they are known for. DESERT - Crepes and Sorbet They were awesome. That evening they were serving the banana crepes. I'm not a fan of banana but this place made me a believer. Inside the crepes was this heavenly light banana whipped cream. It was so good. And the dark chocolate gelato that was served with it was to die for as well. The Sorbet collection that my husband got was great. There was a raspberry sorbet, Mango sorbet and a coconut sorbet. All very tasty and the portions that they gave was very generous. The place is SUPER EXPENSIVE but for my 30th birthday I decided to go all out. I would come back just for the sushi and drinks that makes it worth while.

I wish the most beautifully located Japanese restaurant in Hollywood would have the most amazing Japanese food, but with Yamashiros that is not the case. The menu is far from the traditional Japanese food that you would experience any where else. Very Americanized! My husband of 14 years and I went to Yamashiros for our anniversary dinner two weeks ago and I was very excited to see how the restaurant has changed from the last time I ate there almost 15 years ago. From what I remembered, Yamashiros was amazing, with lots of traditional Japanese style and flare. I felt like I was back in Japan, which I have visited 3 times, and the food tasted like it was caught that day. I'm sad to say that I was very disappointed with the limited menu and small portions. We ordered the calamari for a starter, recommended by our server. The basket of fried squid came to our table looking and tasting like it had been fried in oil that had been used for weeks. Oily to the touch as I picked up a piece and squeezed the grease on to my plate. The sushi prices are double of any good bar in LA, with very small pieces that are loaded with wasabi to mask the fish flavor. 10 pieces for $35 seems a bit steep for such small pieces. My husband ordered a 9oz. Wagyu beef on a hot salt plate which was $58 dollars and I had it without the plate for $47. It was good but not worth the price. The wait staff was very nice and accommodating. All together for both of us, 3 cocktails, 2 orders of the sushi appetizer, greasy calamari, 2 steak dinners and a dessert was $285 which was way off the charts when it comes to my idea of a fancy dinner. I'm not going back to Yamashiros in the near future for sure. I think I'll just stick to my little sushi bar for good Japanese food.

Nice view but my salmon was tiny and over cooked. I was hoping to get a nice size piece of fish for $32.00 The drinks were good.. My friend had the ribs and they where very tasty. Overall good experience but I will never order the fish again..

This has to be one of the best places to visit and eat in Hollywood, in which i love to call Hollyweird lol. I came out here about 3 or 4 years ago with my family for either Easter or Mothers Day. Anyhow the place is really artsy and unique with Japanese memorabilia. The vibe really has a nice welcoming staff and a good view outside the patio to view the whole city with trees surrounding the view. I love the calamari, sushi, and salmon with egg salads. Calamari is to die for with great drinks as well. I will have to get back here soon, it has been a long time.

The restaurant is beautiful and the views don't get much better than this. I highly recommend going at night. There's a small Japanese garden outside located in middle of the restaurant, can I live here, please? The cocktails and food are overall very good. It's not going to be the best sushi and food you've had but it fits the overall quality and ambiance of this restaurant. Enough to earn 4 stars and a recommendation to come here with friends, a date, or hell, go by yourself and you'll still have a relaxing time.

4/18/15: This restaurant is GORGEOUS. I mean, it has gotta to be one of the fanciest locations / architectures to ever have housed a restaurant. It is perched on the top of the hill, overlooking LA nearly 360deg, surrounded by nice landscaping. The building itself is styled after Japanese architecture, of course, but is totally cavernous and intricately decorated. It even has an indoor garden (where we were seated.) I mean, this thing is really impressive looking inside and out!!! YET..... the service is GAWD AWFUL. And this is no fault of our server, who seemed to be very nice, but she was literally running and gasping for air every time I saw her. I think she might have been the only waitress for the entire restaurant, and it's a big place! COME ON--for a restaurant looking this high-end, wouldn't you have high-end service? I think we got there at 8pm and didn't leave until 11pm!--and about 30% of that time was spent staring at each other wondering when we could tell the waitress our order, and the other 70% staring at each other waiting for food!. It just doesn't make any sense. AND... strangely enough, they decided to serve predominately average food, and even fast food!? They have one of the greatest environments for dining I have ever been to, but they serve CRISSCUT FRIES!?!? (and unbelievably we ordered it too!...) Aw heck... on with the food: 1. True Blue 10z $22: Standard tasting sake to me. In the middle of sweet to dry. Not very complex but tastes refreshing. 5/10. 2. Truffle Hamachi $16: I tasted ZERO truffle. The fish was fine. The tomatoes were sweet and good. Decent sashimi, but nothing special. 5/10. 3. Crisscut Fries $9: So, I guess we were expecting some kind of gourmet reinvention of this standard fast food. Nope. This is pretty much like Jack in the Box's but maybe a tad more plain. Looks like you get ~8-10 pieces for nearly $10. Sigh... Um, why are they serving Jack's fries at a fancy Japanese restaurant!? 1/10. 4. Seafood Tempura $15: So, the seafood itself was tender and good. BUT, the tempura coating was really bad!--I mean, it was not crisp, was a little mushy, and honestly, I don't think I've ever had worse tempura coating from any Japanese restaurant! Super amateur. 2/10. 5. Sushi Selection $34: You get ~10 different pieces. All very average tasting. Not super fresh but not bad. However, $34 is quite high for this amount and quality. 4/10. 6. Sashimi Selection $36: You get ~14 pieces or so, each cut around a little less than 1cm thick except for the scallops. The freshness and taste was about average, not great, not bad. Prices a little high for what you get. 4.5/10. 7. Himalayan Salt Plate ("American Wagyu") $59: So... this is their big ticket item. Might be the most expensive thing on their menu. The presentation is VERY unique. I've never seen steak like this before. They serve a pile of potatoes, roasted garlic, and seared steak on top of a super-heated round block of salt. Very unique and appreciated. UNFORTUNATELY, when it arrived I saw it and started to pull out my camera cause it looked beautiful but the waitress started to pull the meat off onto a plate. I kept telling her, "I'll take care of it. Please, I'll take care of it." But she said, "we aren't allowed to leave the meat on" and after taking off all the meat she pulled out a few cloves of garlic and smeared it on the block, .....and well, leaving a mess for me to take a pic of. Anyway, she showed us how to eat this, which is basically as she demonstrated, smearing the garlic, then taking a piece of meat and rubbing it with your chopsticks on the salt until it is cooked to perfection and takes on as much or as little salt as you desire. Pretty neat. Other than being irritated that I couldn't take good pics, it was actually kinda fun. The meat itself is NOT like Kobe if that's what you're expecting. Very lean--almost no interstitial fat. Still, it was tender and tasty. Potatoes were flavorless. Not impressed with the meat quality for the price, but giving an extra point for uniqueness. Came with a whole plate of arugula (I do not understand why... yes, a whole large plate of the stuff, with a tiny bit of dressing.) 6.5/10. 8. Shoyu Glazed Black Cod $34: This is some DAMN GOOD cod, and I've had a lot of Japanese style black cod. One of the most buttery I've ever had. And they give one of the bigger pieces I've seen. 9/10. 9. Asian BBQ Baby Back Ribs $29: Pretty crappy. The ribs were extremely dry in parts. Flavor was Asiany but different--not sure how I feel about it. But ribs were severely dry and badly cooked. 2/10. 10. Lock Duart Salmon $32: The salmon was overcooked and a tad dry, but not too bad. But the SAUCE--was amazing! 6/10. Sigh... ran out of space. Bottom line: some good food, but mostly bad and overpriced. EXTREMELY little service. 45min between appetizers and main course, 30-40min to order... #japanese #sushi
