I'm a local and this place is my religion, my church, my temple. Why do I worship here? For one, there is no other place in Healdsburg to get more bang for your buck, breakfast-wise. Seriously, every single time I go here, I spend less than I think I should. And I can eat. Fridays-Sundays they offer a short, but perfect, full menu. Fat, juicy blueberry pancakes for $6.50, or poached eggs on polenta with goat cheese and seasonal veg ($7, I think). Blintzes, anyone? The rest of the week, get a coffee ($1.50, free refills) and a croissant or a pizza-like focaccia that will blow your mind and enjoy the people-watching. One time, another regular told me that the "Volcano" (not sure that's the real name) is better than sex. I don't agree, but it is dynamite. If you are feeling particularly skinny, have the chocolate eclair. Holy mother of god it's good, and you will be a convert, I swear. At 4:30 every day, many items are half-price until close. You can buy a gorgeous cheesecake, apple galette or almond torte for much less than the ingredients cost, never mind the time & skill to make it. Great place to take the kids after school, and treat them...for 75 cents! What else? The owners and employees are very nice. The service is no-frills, which I prefer, and which keeps the prices low. Sometimes the line is short, sometimes it is out the door, but I never mind waiting. What isn't worth waiting for?

5* review is for the coffee, smiles and buns, as that's all I've tried so far. House coffee is strong, dark and delicious. Sticky buns are the best pastries I've ever had. Just a hint of sticky sweetness on the crispy crunchy outside with a tender, moist chueyee center. I recommend skipping any thoughts of breakfast and diving into a 12 pack of this gooey goodness.

Stopped in here for the first time to pick up some sticky buns to bring to a friend's house for brunch a week or so ago. Wow! Their sticky buns are the BOMB! In fact, most of the stuff they had there in the way of breakfast pastries looked awesome. I also picked up a couple eclairs for later because, well, they were just too tempting - spinning around in that carousel-of-sin that they have to display the really "naughty" desserts. I admit that I fell for it- hook, line and sinker! But, the eclaire was just ok. The dough (or choux?) was pretty tasteless and there a lot of filling (both custard and whipped cream) and not enough chocolate to balance things out. Not a bad deal for $2.50, but still not something I'd buy again. Service was wonderful and as I was waiting for my items to be boxed up I was asked at least twice if I'd been helped by different smiling, helpful staff members. Cute place to sit and meet a friend. I didn't try the coffee but I will next time.

Downtown Bakery and Creamery 3/6 & 7 Not many places off the square in Healdsburg to grab a cup of coffee while out walking before 7am. I found this please just from the multitude to cars stopping in and then quickly leaving with a bakery box. Very simple coffee and pastry shop, they come in bake it all up fresh for the day and when it's gone it's gone. They day before they must have run out of sandwiches because the sign was still up "Out of Sandwiches". A large coffee and a breakfast roll was $4, cheap in CA wine county standards. Used them twice during my stay for a quick coffee refill. Great fresh food.

Just a great place for coffee and sticky buns in Healdsburg.
(5)Lana L.
It is easy to buy too much and eat it all, I prayed that a diabetic coma didn't ensue... That said, this bakery is wonderful :) Great focaccia, gingerbread, giant fig newtons (fruitier filling, and crust not as bread-like as the brand name packaged), and sticky buns (don't hype it up in your mind, they'll taste better that way). They put out water for free. I was here on a Tuesday late morning, sat near a few commuting visitors, Retired locals like to frequent this place too, and makes it feel very down to earth. They lined their windows with beautiful holiday fruit cake, I was almost curious enough to buy one to try it out.
(4)Katherine A.
Fantastic breakfast foods especially the omelets and cottage potatoes! Blueberry scones are addicting! Yes you can take home their batter ready to bake! Yummy! Hard to get in on a Sunday morning so go early!
(5)Pete H.
My wife and I moved to Healdsburg a few years ago, after our first visit we were hooked. We love the quaintness and the staff are great, food is also of a good value. If you find yourself on the square in the morning you really should check it out.
(4)mark n.
Two words: FIG NEWTONS!!!! The best you will EVER have. Fresh local figs 1 1/2' thick whole wheat crust. TO DIE FOR!!! I call ahead and get a whole loaf. PS; their cookie dough is great raw.

Having worked on the Healdsburg downtown plaza for nearly 4 years, I am shocked at the time I've wasted not enjoying Downtown Bakery + Creamery. Yes, I have been swayed by the other big name options on the square and around town - but I've seen the light! Recently, to my good fortune, a coworker mentioned she was stopping by to grab a snack mid-morning and invited me along. At that time I picked up a slice of mushroom and goat cheese quiche, stocked conveniently in the cooler (with the Odwallas). I ate it at my desk, sampling a first bite before even heating it... it was amazing! So very light were both the crust and the creamy eggy filling. I did heat the rest (it didn't need to be!) and it just got that much better. My second visit was yesterday for lunch, having ordered the the poached farm eggs on polenta, with goat cheese, tomatoes and veggies. It was perfection. The egg was poached just the way I like it, and the flavors meddled together in a symphony in my mouth. Really - it was that good! And did I say - $8? What a steal! I've also now tried the sticky buns (not super sticky, but the moist, cinnamon-y center keeps you from missing the goo), and the donut muffin. The muffin is good, but doesn't hold a candle to the sticky bun. I haven't dined in, only taken things to go, but the service at the counter has been friendly and helpful. They also had delicate little samples of a moist and spicy gingerbread cookie to enjoy while waiting in the (very short) line, which were such a lovely treat. This is now officially my favorite little place in town!

If I lived in the area, I'd eat here regularlly. The program is outstanding, and the experience is great. The food we had was very well prepared. I ate a tasty eggs benedict. I think its pretty neat to support a great cause and have a good meal. To pay for the meal, you will be given an envelope to pay what you want (like a donation), so bring cash or a check. Enjoy!
(5)Rebecca C.
Casual coffee, breakfast, and bakery place, run by the mother of Jaime Peterson, who runs Peterson Winery. The sticky buns were incredible - had to get a box for my office. The poached eggs with polenta were quite good with really fresh vegetables. The eggs yolk could be a bit more runny, and i prefer the runny / soft polenta to the solid state one. But for its price and speed, it's pretty darn good!
(4)Rod H.
Love their sticky buns and apple twists! Check out their booth at the SF farmers' market.
(4)Stacey L.
Delicious cinnamon rolls. We got the polenta and eggs, and one cinnamon roll to start. The polenta and eggs were super tasty but it was the cinnamon roll that blew us away. We went back and bought a 6 pack to share with our friends.
(4)Jonas T.
Blackberry ice cream - locally grown and locally made. JONASAPPROVED!
(4)Debo F.
Oh this place has been a mainstay in my family since I was a kid. We used to sell them little yellow Burbank plums from our orchard to make the best ice cream and galettes I have ever had. I am so happy that they are still going strong. The weekend brunches are also fantastic. Here is what they offer and all is house made: ice cream, sandwiches, sticky buns, scones, wheat bread, sourdough, focaccia, fresh fruit galettes, lemon tarts, cookies, sweets, cakes, pies, and even indoor seating. Worth the line which moves quickly.
(5)Comelona D.
I absolutely love the food on the weekends! Poached eggs with polenta, outstanding! Breakfast pizza, delicious! Cheesy egg scramble, very yummy! And finally, I get a mocha with their homemade whip, can't get enough.
(5)Elizabeth S.
I came here early one morning to fill up on some hearty breakfast in preparation for a day of wine tasting. This place seems to be pretty popular in this little town. You might have to wait to get a seat here on the weekends. The breakfast options are quite unique here though. I played it safe and had a breakfast croissant which came with a nice pomegranate salad. The breakfast pizza was an interesting breakfast concoction which looked very enticing though. While waiting for my croissant, I had some cherry pastry which was heavenly. I'm willing to bet whatever you order here, you're unlikely to be disappointed. The aroma of fresh pastries and bread permeates throughout. The people running the place are friendly, and the general surroundings are simply welcoming.
(4)Arianna N.
All the charm of a busy, little bakery. Food was very good. Service was rushed but professional. The croque Madame was very good. As was the cheesy scramble. The nectarine galette was super tasty and the Mexican chocolate sherbet milk shake was to die for. Wish they had more seating but that's no biggie. I'd love to come back

I first noticed their stand at the Ferry Building because there was a long line for their pastries...after sampling them, I could see why - they're great! I've been to this spot a few times and the items I've tasted have been very good: -Butterfly Cookies - they have a couple of different versions, but I really like the butter/vanilla cookies with the chocolate ganache center. It's flavorful and satisfying, but not overly sweet. The butter cookie is rich, while the chocolate genache center is bittersweet chocolate and a good balance to the subtle flavors of the cookie. There's another version with chocolate cookie and a mint crème center, which I think is okay, but not as good as the butter/vanilla version. -English Muffins - the only thing I can compare them to are Thomas' English Muffins and Trader Joe's Whole Wheat English Muffins - this easily beats them both. These English muffins are doughy, fluffy and dense with a nice "bread and butter" flavor. The richness of the bread is a perfect balance if you make your own breakfast egg sandwich or it can be a nice way to have butter and jam. It's costly ($7 for 4 muffins), but well worth it as an occasional treat. -Donut Muffins - such a cool and unique item - it really is a donut and muffin all in one - is it baked or fried? The important thing is that it's good and well worth a try. If I'm ever in Healdsburg, I'd definitely visit this spot, but for now, their Ferry Building stand will have to do.
(4)Lana K.
I've had a summer cabin here all my life and I've never walked in this place until a few weeks ago!! Super super yummy. Their coffee is good but it's the food that makes it 4 stars. They have very original tarts, cakes, and danishes. I believe I had the cherry danish that tasted very fresh and we got there late morning. The line can get long so be patient. The only I wish was different was to have more room to sit down. All they have is a bench outside and two small tables inside. Hopefully they can expand one of these days. Oh and it's not very decorative so don't be fooled by the plain store. Check it out!!
(4)Caesar R.
Donut muffin and Sticky bun...this is all you really need to start the day! (Especially if you like donuts or muffins, you get the intersection of delicious from both) Everything else looked really delicious.
(4)John M.
Breakfast isn't served until 8am in case you're an early riser. The location is perfect if you're strolling around the plaza. If you get just one thing, make sure to pick up a fig newton. I had no idea a fig newton could be so light and fluffy. I would have grabbed at least 5 more...
(4)Jeana M.
STICKY. BUNS. That is all. Wait, no its not. This place WILL be busy. There are plenty of places to get a morning fix in Healdsburg but it just is what it is, people come here because people like it. . Okay, I've never liked morning buns or sticky buns or anything like that, but seriously, I now HAVE to have one at least once a week They're crispy on the outsize with just the right amount of glaze and pillowy cinnamony goodness on the inside- unraveling it is close to food porn. Do me a favor and go get a damn sticky bun.
(4)phil h.
STICKY BUNS!!!!! Yes, they are epic. I can also vouch for the butter croissant, the chocolate croissant and some sort of fancy pants scone. Yes, I like to eat...got a problem with it?
(4)Nikki W.
High quality bread, coffee, and desserts made this stop worth my wallet. They don't take credit cards so bring your cash! Weird that they can function in 2012 without credit cards but hey looks like they do! They also sell pastry dough, which will be a huge benefit next time I'm making something fancy...but shhhh don't tell!

This place is the temple of flour-based happiness. If you've never been to Healdsburg its a delightful little town, almost like the Southampton of the West Coast. And being in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country, it offers its share of great food and drink destinations. And Downtown Bakery is definitely on the 'great' list. We stopped in on December 26th - per a review by FoodGal.com a few months back. Recommended were the sticky buns, the fig newtons and the focaccia. All I have to say is YUM! Everything was delicious - freshly baked and made with quality ingredients and skill. Everything has the touch of something unique - just like a great little bakery should. We ended up cleaning the shop out of its focaccia inventory: olive studded, tomato and asiago, and blue cheese. All to die for - and all purchased in one fell swoop. We also stocked up on the best peanut butter cookies I've ever tasted, half a dozen giant - but sublime - fig newtons, and a tub of their donut muffin mix. The menu has a number of amazing looking hot items, like Joe's Breakfast Pizza and the 'Volcano' - but we were too stuffed to indulge. That's okay, because if the baked goods are any indication their other offerings, we'll definitely be back to try out the rest of the menu.
(5)Andrea K.
Mmm.. Great pastries and coffee. Have never had any of their homemade ice cream but I'm sure it's good. Tiny little place so it's rare to get a seat...gotta get everything to go, but I don't mind. They sell homemade pie crusts and similar things, which I made look into getting next time. Only downside is they only accept cash and don't really advertise is well so people often go in, order and then need to leave to get cash.
(4)Char D.
Just amazing baked goods! And ice cream! Omg!
(5)Stephanie L.
I am updating my review because my first one was a little to enthusiastic. Not everything here is fabulous, though I still love the place. I have tried the Croque Madame, and it was tasty but not as good as the polenta-with-poached-eggs. I've also since had the chocolate tartlet, which is delectable. The cookies are nothing to write home about. The focaccia is scrumptious and a very cheap meal. It is huge and filling, so you could eat half and share or save the other half for later. The fig newtons (I have only tried them when there are free samples) are quite good. If you like store-bought ones, these will be great for you because they are so much nicer. If I could, I'd give this place a 4.5.

Let's see. What did we try? What didn't we try? Unfortunately, a lot as this place only accepts cash. We were starving after driving up here straight from the airport so we ordered the breakfast pizza and took a donut muffin, a sticky bun and a whole wheat currant scone to go. We would have liked to try a galette as well, but because of the money situation, held off. Pizza - hands down, one of the best pizzas ever tasted. This is a small pizza, more of an individual size but we shared it 3 ways. The crust is fabulous. You could not have better. We would have preferred healthier toppings, but I loved the cracked egg they put on top. It cooked simply from being placed on the hot, fresh pizza. Yes, this pizza took some time, but it was so worth it. Donut muffin - This was a bit disappointing. Yes, it tastes exactly like a cake donut, but since I'm not a big fan of cake donuts....Now if it had tasted like a raised donut, I would have been more impressed. It was good though for what it was. Sticky bun - pretty darn good! I prefer cinnamon buns, but this was tasty. Whole wheat scone - pretty yummy but a bit heavy. Understandable considering the ingredients. Also, later in our trip we happened to experience a totally amazing scone that blew this one out of the water. This place is super busy, but service was quick and efficient and the quality of the ingredients are high. I would definitely revisit if I ever came back to the region.

I don't roll through Healdsburg often, as it's about 2 hours north of me. BUT, whenever I am running up the 101 corridor, stopping by this bakery is a must. I've had their donut muffins and plum/raspberry pastries, and both were outstanding. This time up I grabbed a veggie quiche as well, and it was really really delicious. The ladies behind the counter cooking up pastry items of deliciousness, and brewing up yummy coffee, are always super friendly as well. I really like this place and wish it was closer, I would probably weigh about 25 pounds heavier, but it would be well worth it!
(5)Renee C.
This is a self serve type place where you order at the counter, pay at another counter, and then get a number to place on your table. My boyfriend and I have gone here four times, but one time we couldn't get in because the line was so long and the tables were all taken. It is a small place. We love the pancakes, brought fresh and hot to our table. My boyfriend loves the cheesy egg scramble . It comes with potatoes but not toast, so make sure to ask for toast if you like that with your eggs. The prices are very resonable and the food all of very good quality. Also the coffee IS VERY GOOD!
(4)Abe L.
The éclairs, bread pudding, and breakfasts are really good. The service socks though and they are usually unfriendly, no smiles, and seem to hate work. The bread is dry and doesn't last or taste as good as costeauxs. The crust needs to be crispy and dough much more moist.
(2)Ryan S.
Donut muffins? Yes Please! So damn tasty and terrible for you. I also ordered the breakfast pizza which was really tasty, hit the spot after a bunch of beers at Russian River Brew Co. the night before. The iced coffee is great as well and it is a fun friendly atmosphere.
(4)Ken J.
so, I usually eat next door, but I read that Zagat listed this place as one of the five best breakfasts in greater Bay Area.... so had tro try it. Nah. menu too limited and terrible ambiance... 2 crowded picnic tables with lines. Okay, food was good... but dining experience wasn't. Party of 6, we tried everything. Creamy scrambled eggs were delicious. The sticky bun had a dry sweetness to it that was great... if you find Cinabun too sticky sweet. Bought some bread too. That also was good. Still there is no way I would ever list this as one our best. Too many choices.
(3)Erin L.
Downtown Bakery is the place to go for breakfast in Healdsburg. It's definitely the place the locals go. Every morning, a group of local residents gathers outside Downtown Bakery to drink coffee and chat. It gives the bakery a warm and welcoming vibe, and if you're in town long enough you might find yourself outside gabbing, too. Inside, the bakery is pretty bare bones. There are a few simple tables and a couple of bakery cases. Most of the space is taken up by cooking equipment, which you can see behind the counter. True to its old school feeling, Downtown Bakery doesn't take credit cards. Bring cash. If you need Wifi, this isn't the place for you. If you want amazing pastries and an upbeat atmosphere, stick around. Order the cinnamon donut muffin. Just do it. Trust me. Then come back later for a galette with seasonal fruit or the chocolate cookie sandwich filled with mint cream. The coffee isn't out-of-this-world special, but if you're dining in it's served in any manner of silly old mugs and definitely hits the spot. After you've swooned over the cinnamon donut muffins, you can purchase some of the dough, located in the bakery's fridge. You can also take pie crust and fruit jams to go. In short, this place rocks. If you go to Healdsburg and don't go to Downtown Bakery, you're really missing out.
(4)Christine C.
Seating is tight but everyone (customers & staff) is pleasant, eager to help... The food is so good--my quiche was light & flaky. My aunt's eggs were perfectly cooked--not over cooked at all. My sister-in-law's breakfast sandwich was eagerly consumed...
(5)Colin E.
The sticky buns are to die for - you will not find better anywhere - the middle of them is the heart of the goodness - always eat that part first! I am a local business employee - I am here every morning. Focaccia is amazing - try the volcano. It is basically a focaccia roll with goat or brie cheese, and fresh organic vegetables delicately baked into it. Additionally, for pastries the Pain au chocolat is wonderful. A genuine treat, for more savory fare, is their Savory Turnover, it's a light turnover with Riccota or goat cheese, fresh leaks or carrots (picked I believe) baked into the middle in addition to fresh applewood bacon and other vegetables du jour. So in order of a local, with a lifetime of experience: Sweet: 1. Sticky Buns 2. Pain au chocolat Savory: Focaccia volcano Savory Turnover Best time to get in for many reasons is between 6am (Open and 7:30 AM) - this is the lighter 'local' crowd, and all the pastries are FRESH that day, they will give you sticky buns for instance straight off the baking rack - still warm. Coffee is top notch, an oak roasted italian blend. Latte and espresso beverages are delicious, feel free to bring your own coffee mug or vessel for house coffee. Owners were trained I believe under Alice Waters at Chez Panisse. You can't get any better. Please always be polite to the staff and bring a dollar or two extra to tip. Card sales are $10 min and I always feel bad, being a daily local visitor if I pay by card, as there is no tip field in the credit card receipt - and they do go the extra mile to be courteous when they are totally slammed and the line is out the door.

Because of the good Yelp reviews, I suggested this place today for a late lunch (a lil before 2pm) to a group of friends that were doing a wine tour. It was a HORRIBLE experience for us however... We were a group of 8 and we all walked in and got in 'line' at the same time. We briefly discussed that we would order to-go, take our food to the park and eat (cause it was so hot in the building) and then... I stepped up and ordered for my boyfriend and me. Well, apparently we placed our order with no problem but as our friends were trying to place theirs, the cook decided she was 'having a really bad day' and 'in a really testy mood' so, she refused to take anymore orders. Yes, you heard me right...SHE WANTED TO GO HOME SO SHE STOPPED TAKING ORDERS, even though she was breaking up a group. I protested that we were all together and they'd already let part of the group order, but the cook was throwing a lil fit in the back and the counter girl wouldn't go ahead and finish taking our order. She even said, 'I ask you if that was all'. Well, that was all for me but not for the other 6 people with me! I was shocked and disappointed after they had so many nice comments. In the end, 6 of our 8 group had to split and go eat down the road. Not cool. There was no relaxing park lunch, only irritation and confusion. As for the food, the breakfast pizza was good, we're gonna start baking an egg on top like they do when we make ours. The salad though, was nothing but some lettuce leaf with chopped up beats and walnuts. I don't know if that's usually how it is or if that was the 'quick' version. A woman that was there looking at pastries told me I should call the owner about it. *shrug* They get one star for good pizza and one star for benefit of the doubt.

I came here for the Donut Muffins, period. I live in San Francisco and have had their Donut Muffins at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market. Once I put 2-and-2 together and realized their home base is in Healdsburg, I concocted an excuse to get up there for the day just so I could pick up some fresh baked Donut Muffins (okay, and do some wine tasting too). The bakery was crowded (line to the door) when I arrived at 9AM on Sunday, but moved fast. Most patrons ordered an egg dish of sorts and took their plates to the communal tables. I was fixated on the baked goods, including cupcakes, gallettes, cakes, cookies, muffins, scones and of course my Donut Muffins. Needless to say, they did not disappoint and they were even better fresh than they are at the farmer's market. I would give this place 5 stars, but since I've only ever had their Donut Muffins (okay, and their giant "Fig Newton") I can't comment on all the other yumminess they have to offer. Looks like I already have my next excuse for a trip to Healdsburg!
(5)Michelle Y.
They have a great variety...picked up a box of pastries for the family Saturday morning at 7am! Chocolate and almond croissants Supersized fig newton Blueberry danish Cinnamon danish Blueberry scone All freshly baked and devoured! Great with a hot cup of coffee! Or if you don't drink coffee like me...then hot milk :)
(4)Dilly M.
YUM! When in Healdsburg this is a great spot for a snack (baked good or ice cream).
(5)Katherine F.
Yum, yum, yum!! We stopped by to get a snack and a coffee...and we were not disappointed!! Our lattes were good, but the real star for me was a sticky bun...spicy with not too much syrup. The pastry was light and flakey....WOW!! I tasted 2 cupcakes, and liked frosting the best...both were a bit dry to me. It is so cool, they sell frozen pastry for you use...I love that. Sadly, knowing it would not travel, I had to pass. My new go-to bakery on my fun Healdsburg day!!
(5)Bryce B.
On a recent trip to Healdsburg, I stopped in here to grab a little ice cream after a nice bike ride. This is a small joint and if more than 6 people are there, consider it packed. The ice cream, made on premises, is excellent. Rich, creamy and very fresh tasting. While standing in line, I was advised that although most of the baked goods were excellent, it was the sticky buns that were truly fantastic. Apparently this is a consistent opinion on Yelp as well. So, the next day, I went to verify this claim. I must admit, they are very good, with a crunchy, flaky exterior and a soft, tender interior. However, they aren't nearly as good as those from Amy's Bread in NYC (reviewed separately).
(4)Erin C.
Great bakery in the heart of Healdsburg. Ordered the cinnamon donut based on recommendations here and thought it was pretty good but in my opinion, the seasonal raspberry morning bun was what really stole the show! The fruit galettes are delicous as well. I like to grab something from here, walk to the Goat for a drink, and then sit in the plaza and enjoy my purchases!
(4)Reed M.
Unpretentious, high quality. I love the confections, such as the butterfly cookies with dark chocolate; or the giant fig bars; and the galettes, but I am all about the bread. For years I have enjoyed their wonderful sourdough French and Wheat-Rye loaves. Recently tried the Como and found it to be very good, too. I must say I prefer their recipes from a few years back that rendered the breads much denser, but the flavor is still there and there's nothing better than homemade bruschetta with this bread toasted.
(5)jennifer j.
I am in love with their sticky buns. They are half price m-f 4:30-5:30, which, if they still have some left, is an INSANELY good deal. They are regularly $2.25 and even then worth every penny. I just moved to the area and have to say there is no better comfort food for a homesick girl. P.S. They aren't really sticky:)
(4)Quinn S.
It ain't easy to do bakery right. People aren't just coming for bread and pastries, they want to feel whole. Bakeries make us feel complete, like you are being nourished from the source. So a bakery needs to be clean but not sterile, warm but kind of serious, and needs some people who know what they are doing. Everything is awesome, even the weird fig bar things. Plus you can buy frozen pie dough. This place is cool because it is authentic, not cool because Of tattoos piercings and bad hairdos, ( though you may find some of that as well) Breakfast pizza will be my last meal before they execute me.
(5)Swati R.
This place is so tempting. Macarons of various flavors. Cakes, tarts. I Tried a slice of the chocolate cake, I think it was called zucotto, not sure..but it was sooooo good. Covered with dark chocolate, filled with cream and cake, it was the best chocolate dessert I had in long time.. I also sampled their blackberry sorbet and that was soo good. It tasted better than sorbet, like a cold liquid blueberry cake with bits of berries in it.
(5)Lisa K.
(For the Ferry Building stand) I really like bakeries, baked goods, and butter. So don't take it lightly when I say that the baked goods at this bakery are TOO BUTTERY! They're just this side of greasy, I think, and it's a shame because I do think they're otherwise good. I recently tried the sticky bun, brioche, and bread pudding. And I didn't finish any of them, which is shocking, really. The sticky bun had an almost savory flavor to it due to all of the butter, and the brioche ended up being a bit leaden. I thought the bread pudding fared the best, but it was odd how totally separate the layers were (custardy on the bottom, bread on top) - I think the intermingling of these things is the best part. And, to quote an eating companion, after having a few bites one can feel the residue of fat coating one's mouth. I can appreciate that it's a quality place, it's just really not to my taste. Again, I say this as someone who likes buttery things, but I guess in more moderation. Maybe some people like just having a couple of bites of each item, too. But overall I'll stick with the breadier Acme treats.

Sunday lunch consisted of a deliciously buttery & cheesy croque madame with a side of lightly dressed greens. I couldn't resist eating my passionfruit tart dessert BEFORE the croque madame came out from the kitchen, and the tart was *DELICIOUS*. Absolutely wonderful. The croque madame also had a uniquely delicious taste, with a crumbly white cheese coupled with another type of cheese. Not too sweet or salty like many croque madams I've had in my day. Five stars. Love the lack of pretention at this casual eatery in downtown Healdsburg.

Tasty food, good prices, quaint/cozy atmosphere. Had the margherita pizza for lunch, very good. Girlfriends had: polenta with veggies, meat pizza, some sort of sandwich, and for dessert we tried the eclair, a chocolate mousse something-or-other, and a lemony dessert as well. Everything was good. Can't beat the price for the location! Would absolutely re-visit when in the area.

Oh Downtown Bakery, let me list the goodies I cannot live without.... - Angel food cake - Sticky buns - English muffins - Cheesy eggs - Pancakes - and maybe that passion fruit bavarian cream stuff If you're wondering, everything here is absolutely delightful. If I lived in Healdsburg, I'm sure I'd weigh 500 lbs from going to the bakery every day - there's not a thing here I wouldn't eat. Though the line can get a little long on the weekends if you're waiting for breakfast and seating is tight, the whole place is just really great. The vibe of the seating area is always chipper, and everything that comes out of Kathleen Stewart's kitchen is magic. If you like baked goods, or just sweets in general, this is definitely the place to go. I want that angel food cake for my birthday for the rest of my life. I'm also totally wearing a downtown bakery tshirt right now (they're soft and comfy)

I love scones, my blueberry scone was a blueberry biscuit dusted with sugar. The almond tart, was more of an almond candy bar, but very good, just not what expected. It's mostly pretty good, I've been there several times and always came away just a bit wanting.
(3)Stephanie S.
I love bakeries! When I say that I mean it. So when I give a bakery five stars you can put money on it that it's good. This place is hands down the best I have been to! The STICKY BUNS (which seems to be a perfect hybrid between a morning bun and a sticky bun) are AMAAAAAAAZING! When I ate it for the first time my eyes started tearing up. There are so many textural things going on: the crunch of the first layer of dough and the snap of the caramelized sugar. Then you finally get to the buttery, perfectly sweetened center which is like waking up in heaven... no better, a paradise earth.

Having now seen the phots, I wish we had stayed for lunch - but my friends, we were on a Bakery Hunt. Searching for that Sunday Satisfaction that comes with the perfect confection, pastry and/or bakery sweet. Their display case had me at first turn of the mirrored shelf. Cute, cute cakes, cupcakes, moist bread puddings, hand pies, sticky buns, cookie sandwiches, french macarons, brownies cookies, their take of the fig newton, breads, focaccia - and Honey, that's just the bakery side. Since this is what I am drawn to, that's all I can report for you. We got 3 strawberry pockets, 1 chocolate macaron, and one brownie. Strawberry pocket: delicious exterior - crispy outer, light & airy middle with a smattering of strawberry preserves. I challenge you not to like it. Chocolate macaron: French style with ganache holding the 2 halves together, classic crunchy outer with nutty, chewy insides all with the rich chocolate ganache? Almost too much. The brownie has mysteriously disappeared... bad sharer... Seeing as we were walking through the Farmer's Market for the better part of the afternoon, I felt I had sufficiently worked off my chocolate goodness, so I hightailed back across the street for more. I had eyed a tall, delectable looking scone 1st time 'round, so I promptly set to but another. That's when I noticed the gelato bar. Everyone was in line for a taste of that. I got my blueberry scone and delighted at it's texture. The outside had a sugar coating on top that made it crunchy, the sides had a buttery crispness as well. The blueberries were whole and fresh. Overall, the scone was slightly dry - but the outer texture was perfect and the very middle was nice. The cakes are simply decorated, some with delicate vines in chocolate on white or the opposite in frosting. The cupcakes make you smile and their version of the fig newton looks amazing. I've made up my mind - I've got to go back for that croque madame sandwich from the picts and a homemade fig newton!

Best. Cheesecake. EVER. Among other assorted goodies, sticky buns, carrots cake cupcakes with almonds or pistachios, chocolate eclairs, butter croissants, scones and SO much more. They freshly bake pie crusts, cookie dough and sticky buns to buy in packages to heat up and devour at home. AH! Cheap but AMAZING. Seriously, this place rules!
(5)Beth A.
I was dying to try this spot, especially the breakfast pizza, after reading all the reviews - so I finally got there and the verdict for now is that this place is A-ok. We ordered a breakfast pizza and some donut muffins to go. The pizza we delish, it was a kind of bummer that we couldn't get mushrooms on only half (my other half thinks they're disgusting) but whatevs he just picked them off. It's also kind of a bummer you can't get it on weekdays. On to the donut muffins, I wasn't as excited about the donut muffins as everyone else here is - I thought they were kinda dry and crumbly. They were good, but I didn't love them and probably wouldn't order one again, next I'll try something else.......like a sticky bun maybe! So all in all three stars - I'd like to go back try some of the other items they offer.
(3)Jasper P.
What a score. THis place is super bomb. They have great pastries, breads, breakfast, lunch, and ice cream. We did a little tour o healdsburg last weekend and were very happy to have stayed right on the square. There are so many neat shops and great food all around, but we kept coming back here (3 meals in 3 days). I highly recommend the breakfast pastries.
(4)Kate S.
Doughnut muffins are the best. Such a cute little spot with amazing pastries.
(4)Kim J.
YUM. My friend and I were visiting a friend in Santa Rosa, and we spent the day being foodies in Healdsburg. She told us this place was featured on Food Network and we had to go there. The presentation is pretty enticing. They have one of those circling display cases that tempt you with a bunch of delectable looking treats. We ordered an eclair, one of the donut muffins (which we were told we MUST order,) and some blackberry ice cream. Ok, sorry to disappoint but the donut muffin wasn't all it's cracked up to be. It wasn't bad, I just didn't really understand the fuss. I was a little more obsessed with the eclair. Chocolately custard deliciousness. And the blackberry ice cream was to die for. We split everything between three of us and it was the perfect amount. The staff were all really friendly and we will definitely be coming back the next time we're in town.
(5)Heather L.
We were told to go here by a local. We had the breakfast pizza. It was good, but we didn't expect an almost raw egg on top. We scooped it off and ate the rest of the pizza. Not a lot of seating, noisy. more of a coffee shop feel.
(3)Darina H.
My bf and I stopped by the Downtown Bakery and Creamery after eh mentioned how wonderful the berry pockets were. We went on Labor Day and it was a busy little cafe. There were two tables filled with family sized parties enjoying their breakfast and pastries. The staff was super friendly and they have all types of pastries. We got the strawberry BERRY POCKETS (half a dozen) and they were DELICIOUS! Can't wait to go back!
(5)Kris B.
Weak coffee, but the donut muffin was good.
(3)Deems P.
We've tried many things at this place and our favorites are the: - fruit galettes: perfect or close to perfect crust with lots of fruit and the sugar caramelized at the base of the crust - the best we've ever had! - apple spirals: deceptively good. We learned about them from a woman that works there. - almond bar; If you love the taste of brown butter and almonds, you'll love this. And it's cheap.
(5)Saundra D.
So, you all know that I am gluten free right...so why, oh why am I willing to go through such tummy pain for a sticky bun? I don't know what to say, it was worth it. The sticky bun is just crisp enough on the edges to make you wiggle in your seat and close your eyes (keep one eye open if someone is in sticky bun stealin' distance) while you wrap your lips around the not too sweet, just right lusciousness. Worth the drive, worth the pain of the GF sin. Won't do it often, but I suspect I will do it again.
(4)Kore O.
I love this place and have to come at least once when I'm visiting Healdsburg. The poached farm eggs on polenta is sooo good. And the pastries and coffee are yummy as well.
(5)J L.
Best spot in Healdsburg. Maya and Joe are genius bakers. To die for list: 1.Blueberry scones (I've been loving them since I had teeth). 2.Tropical muffin (plus all their other muffins) 3.Breakfast pizza (omg) 4.Bread pudding 5.Cakes 6.Pastries 7.Cookies 8.Coffee 9.Yeah, I guess everything. ALSO!! THIS IS ONE OF THE ONLY PLACES IN HEALDSBURG THAT HAS NOT BECOME MORE AND MORE PRETENTIOUS OVER THE YEARS.
(5)Ian E.
Try a volcano while you're there. Cheesy deliciousness. All their other baked goods are really tasty also.
(5)Gary S.
My grown up kids are regulars here. So I met them for breakfast and it was very good. Nice fun comfortable place to meet for breakfast. I recommend.
(4)Amy K.
OVERALL:3.9 FOOD:4.5 SERVICE:3 AMBIANCE:4 VALUE:4 Came for the Donut Muffin (not as good as homemade, but still yummy), but more impressed with the Almond Bar: ooey-gooey, chocolatey, nutty goodness packed onto a buttery crust. Also sandwiches & euro-fornian breakfast (served all day!), but had to hit the road before sampling more of the menu. Will be back for more!
(4)Eva M.
After reading other Yelper's reviews of this place, my husband and I decided to get the sticky buns and donut muffin. Definitely get the sticky buns! It's not what you think it'll be (soft, chewy), it is flaky and croissant-ish, and delicious!! The donut muffin was OK. Not my favorite, but still OK. It got pretty busy the morning we arrived, but it was nice and cozy.
(4)Fred S.
Donut muffin is overrated. Take a Safeway muffin and sprinkle lots of sugar on it and vwala- you too can eat a donut muffin. Chocolate macaroon- take a cookie and put Hershey's syrup on it and slap another cookie on top of it. The sticky apple bun was the best thing- and trust me- nothing special. Pro's-Cheap Prices,Cute location Cons- Everything else you can think of.
(2)Shal J.
Yummy baked goods & pizza. This is a good spot for a quick & easy lunch before heading out for wine tasting. I liked the feeling of supporting this local business! Or if you're coming back from wine tasting, they also have ice cream here! Can you tell I plan my trips around wine tasting?
(4)Lauren T.
I only had the sticky buns here (which I sought out after stumbling upon other reviews before my trip to Healdsburg - I have a major pastry addiction) and they were amazing!! After eating one I bought 2 more for the road. The buns are light, flaky, moist and lightly glazed with sweet goodness to create the perfect little spiral that isn't overly sweet at all. I made a point to stop here on our way out of Healdsburg down to San Fran to pick up a few more (the last one actually made it all the way home to Chicago and was still amazing even the next day after a plane ride). The place is really laid back and unpretentious as well which was appreciated as I attacked the sticky buns in public.
(5)kelley s.
I've lived in Healdsburg for a year and a half now and this is by far my favorite breakfast spot...I only wish their breakfast menu was served during the week(served fri-mon). Although sometimes hard to find a seat, it's well worth it. Best pancakes in town and the croque madame(fresh croissant topped with ham, herbed ricotta and poached egg) is to die for. My husband is obsessed with the cheesy eggs and homemade ketchup.
(5)Ann L.
I've had their products at the SF Ferry Building Farmers' Market before but wanted to try some things at the bakery. What I tried at the FM: sticky bun - just ok Sat 12/8/07 tried: triple ginger cookie .70c - thin crispy cookie, not much ginger taste..just ok, probably won't get again. chocolate chip cookie .70c - Thin, crispy cookie, just ok, probably won't get again. No Public Bathrooms.
(3)Craig I.
If you're looking for a great pizza, put this place on your list. Wonderful crust, sauce, and cheese. I wish I had asked for some to go! Bonus: you can get pizza for breakfast!
(4)Sadie S.
Don't miss this gem! As a former local, this is always among my top recommendations for out of town guests. Best baked goods (morning buns, turnovers, gallettes), bread (german rye), and amazing hot breakfast options.
(5)amul s.
Two words: Sticky Buns. We came here to try the donut muffins after hearing about them on the Food Network. They were pretty good but I had to try the sticky buns after reading about them on Yelp. Hands down better than the donut muffin. The sticky bun is a muffin shaped pastry made of croissant dough topped with a stick candied goodness. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that I've only tried the donut muffin and sticky bun. I would definitely go back and try out the rest of the menu.
(4)Jenna L.
DONUT MUFFIN. 'Nuff said.
(4)Rita Y.
I read that the baker/owner used to work at Chez Panisse in Berkeley. Everything is made with local butter, milk , cream, eggs, fruits and breads made from organic flour and starters. They use organic products as much as possible. There's a special summer pudding, tiramisu and cakes in the refrigerator as well as pre-made raw pie crusts ($8) you can take home to fill and bake, 1 lb squares of puff pastry, tart, galette, crisp topping, bread crumbs, cookie dough and choc and caramel sauce. Brought home a box of: chocolate chip cupcake (Jr. Yelpers all agreed this was great), vanilla cup cake (good), choc. croissant (good) with buttery, crispy crust, brownie (OK, too sweet), cheddar thyme scone (crunchy, good), one each - Aunt Virginia biscotti (not crunchy enough), choc chip biscotti (OK) and the best item - sticky bun. Not too syrupy with a light, fluffy dough and crispy outside. If I were to come back, I'd consider only buying the choc chip cupcakes and sticky buns to take home. They have a variety of 8 breads/buns (hot dogs/hamburgers), 7 breakfast pastries, over 8 types of desserts (including cookies, eclairs, Angel food cakes, pound cakes, bread pudding, marjolaine). They serve a limited menu of breakast ($8) and for lunch: sandwiches, pizza, focaccia. There's limited seating, like picnic tables and expect long lines in the AMs on weekends. I didn't get to try their ice cream but hope to next time. A local gem. Cash or Checks only.
(4)Elina A.
Horrible service. I ordered the breakfast pizza and it took 20 minutes for it to come to our table. They could have at least told us ahead of time that it will take 20 minutes for our pizza because we were crunched on time. When the pizza came, they did not bring us any serving plates or any napkins. How did they expect us to eat the pizza? on top of a napkin without a small plate? We bought some morning buns and cinnamon donuts which were decent but will not be going back
(2)Roberto F.
Sticky buns and croissants are killer here. If you show up before 9 the sticky buns are usually still a little warm from the oven. I am always in search of a good croissant and this place is about as good as it gets for what I've had in Sonoma County. Probably one of the best bakeries in Sonoma County for pastries, and they do a pretty solid breakfast too if you don't mind some crowded family style seating.
(5)Regina C.
my one star review is based solely on the "donut muffin," which is more like a cinnamon sugar coated brick. dry. dense. not worth my time. or yours for that matter. i'm shocked that people love it so much.
(1)Deidre H.
Hands down THE BEST sticky buns in the WORLD. My obsession with these perfect little Carmel and Cinnamon flavored puff pastry delights is uncontrollable and boarders on fanatical. . . I often find my car pointed north on the 101 when in the Bay Area. An hour later, I find myself in front of the Creamery. All of their other treats are great as well. Homemade Ice Cream and cookie dough, sticky bun dough that you can take home and bake yourself! The Creamery has a stand at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturdays . . . but get there early, they sell out!
(5)Scott K.
The Local's Guid to the Downtown Bakery & Creamery, with years of data and at least an inch on my waistline to support it: 1. The really gorgeous pastry (all the frilly stuff) is beautiful to look at and clearly the work of a real talent, but unfortunately it just doesn't taste that good. Stick w/ the breakfast pastries, which kick serious ass. 2. The 'breakfast pizza' might just be the best hangover breakfast in the 707 area code. 3. The donut muffins are the original and the reason everyone else now sells a knockoff. DB&C's are still the best, by far, and well worth the hype. 4. The sticky buns are disarmingly simple: No nuts, not heavy dough, no icing... essentially, they are a croissant, wrapped in a spiral and baked w/ some syrup in a muffin tin (I think). The result - not overly sweet, not too dense, no real cinnamon, and no nuts - is a revelation and will change the way you think about sticky buns. 5. Skip the ice cream, the texture is almost never right (very noticeable frozen crystals, which is really non grata in quality ice creams, sorry) Oh, and cash only.
(4)Bill L.
Awesome. We stayed in Healdsburg for a long weekend, and managed to find our way in here three times - each time leaving with a box full of way too many treats to be sensible. There were hits and misses, of course, but we enjoyed the variety and the uniqueness of many of the breakfast pastries. I thought the desserts were a bit on the sweet side, but that's just me - my wife and daughter had no such complaints.
(4)Beth H.
My husband and I are lucky enough to own a home in Healdsburg. We don't live there full time(yet), but when we are lucky enough to be there we get up early hit the flying goat for coffee then the creamery for the best gluten free muffins and sticky buns!!!! Now if they could master a gluten free sticky bun I would be in heaven!!! As a celiac I am always searching for great gluten free goodies!!! They nailed it with the muffins!!! But get there early they tend to run out!!!! Dear Creamery owner and staff, Please figure out a way to make gluten free sticky buns and donut muffins! If I could eat the original ones and not end up in the local hospital I would! It is a thought that crosses my mind during each visit! Sincerely yours, A devoted foodie!
(5)Mousputin S.
Stopped by their stand at the Ferry Building on a Saturday because my brother wanted a pastry! The selection was kind of overwhelming, but we tried the donut muffin and a cherry coffee cake. We really only got the donut muffin because we were told that it was featured on the "Best Thing I Ever Ate" show on the Food Network, and all of us were kind of underwhelmed by it. Probably would have been better warm? I'm willing to go back and try more pastries, or even stop by the real bakery next time I'm in Napa, but sadly, not one of the best things I ever ate...
(3)Shannon W.
Downtown Bakery and Creamery was recommended to us by a family friend who lives in Healdsburg, and had one thing to say: STICKY BUNS. The Sticky Buns don't disappoint. Fresh out of the oven, they are warm, gooey, and are pretty much a slice of heaven. Add a cup of coffee or espresso, and you will certainly levitate. I also had the chance to try one of their Fig Newtons last weekend, and let me say that it put new meaning to the snack I loved as a child. This thing was massive, and the fig filling was SO fresh - I mowed that thing down in less than 2 minutes. Nothing but good things to say about Downtown Bakery, except that I wish I lived closer (but my thighs are thankful that I don't).
(5)Jim C.
A donut muffin?! YUM! Saw their stand at the SF Ferry Building Farmers Market. Some ladies were raving about their donut muffin... Basically donut dough baked as a muffin instead of being deep fried into a donut. Novel concept so had to try it and delicious! Was like eating a plain cake donut in muffin form... I love the crunchy part of muffin tops so that was my fave part of it. And it's not fried like a donut so maybe it's a bit healthier? (that's what I was trying to convince myself) Bottom line: New fan of the donut muffin!
(4)Bleep S.
My new favorite bakery for sweets. Try the fruit galette...addicting. The little round chocolate cake is intensely chocolaty and rich. Many of the baked goods are half price after 4:30pm
(5)Jenna B.
They have the absolute BEST sticky buns!! My first time visiting this bakery was several years ago and I'll never forget the great breakfast I had and of course the desserts. I just happen to be in Healdsburg the other day and I miraculously found the bakery! The food was as great as I could remember. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'd be here everyday!! ~ The only downside is that they take cash or CHECK only. Who carries a checkbook these days?!?! Last time I checked my calendar it was 2009!
(5)Maria G.
We stopped here one morning for a famous donut muffin. I think because of the craze over these muffins I thought they were going to be so much more than how I imagined them, but they weren't. However they are still very tasty, but what I did fall in love with is the butterscotch cupcake! We also had breakfast there-eggs polenta and a margarita pizza-eggs were overcooked but delicious anyway! Everything was so fresh. I am definitely making the 40 minute drive again to taste all if their delicious pastries!
(4)Angie R.
Awesome scones and coffee. They serve up a mean breakfast as well. There aren't a lot of choices, and the choices are a little fancy (as in, "polenta and eggs" fancy) so if you're looking for eggs over-easy and hash browns this is probably not the place you want to go. My only regret was that, after a half scone and a plate of eggs a la Mexicana (scrambled with tomatoes and chilis) I didn't have room for a cupcake. I will not make that mistake next time.
(4)Allucaneat G.
This is just for their stand at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market. I'm not usually up early enough to make it to the Saturday farmer's mkt . But the past 2 Saturdays chance would have it that I was and and so got to check out the market. Holy Samples, this place is huge! Anyway, I was excited at the prospect of trying new baked goods and was not disappointed. What did I find? A cheese scone! One of the the universe's most perfect foods. If done correctly, that is. This place had a good looking cheddar scone. "Uh Oh Arizmendi, looks like you might not be the world's best after all" I thought to myself. I got me one. It had the requisite cheese melted and crunchy on top. It had a find crumb. It was dense, it was buttery. It was all that a cheese scone must be. It was pretty damn good. I'd say it was a runner up to Arizmendi's (9th Ave location ONLY! And ONLY the Sunday version, not the new, reduced cheese Thursday version) cheese scone. The only complaint I have with this bakery's cheddar scone is the rather strong thyme flavor. It's good, but to my palate it gives the scone a moldy note. But not enough to deter me from eating it. Last week and this week. This week I tried a jam pocket. I was torn- scone or jam pocket? Sweet won. Jam pocket I could've done without. It was just okay. The pastry was too soggy from the jam, so flakiness lacked. The jam was good, but without a good flaky crust, not worth the calories. I went back, got in the long line again, and got me one of them cheddar scones. Yep. I look forward to trying other items from this place. The croissants look amazing. Like they'd just shatter into shards of buttery flour. Oooooh, that's kinda like porn for me.
(4)Martin S.
Closed on Tuesdays!!! A+ sweet/savory breads, desserts, scones, croissants, and their sticky buns ROCK! I'd give it 5 starts, but they are cash/check only and you can have a long wait during peak periods. I wish they could streamline a little, but I guess that would ruin the charm, right?
(4)Martha E.
Yum! Tried Volcano pizza bread first! GREAT flavor, tomatoes were juicy and flavorful. Made a great lunch. Next we tried the strawberry rhubarb galette! Wow! Then there was the butterscotch cupcake. WOW!
(5)Seri T.
Got 3 sticky buns, a breakfast pizza, and hot tea. Best breakfast I've had in a loong time. Wait wasn't too bad on a Saturday late morning. Staff was friendly. The other reviews cover all the details.
(5)C G.
No greater sticky bun exists. Enjoyed their affogatos too.
(5)Yayu L.
this review is only for the ice cream. the butterscotch pecan had good flavor, but the texture was not creamy and smooth enough for me. the baked goods looked tempting, i guess they'll have to wait til next time!
(3)Piper m.
Soo delicious! As long as I can remember this downtown classic has been serving up amazing breads, cookies and ice creams. I can remember the old storefront that has been revamped in more recent years to include a dining area with breakfast on weekends which is delicious- love the breakfast pizza, house-made granola, pancakes, etc. The sticky buns here are my favorite and the house made ice cream is delicious as are the tarts, sandwiches, etc. We recently bought a fresh loaf of sandwich bread and it was so chewy and moist- it could be eaten alone, made into a perfect sandwich, or toast. Needless to say it was gone within a day! All around a great place and a local favorite!
(5)S C.
A lot of reviews for the great pastries, but the coffee was excellent. And the most excellent part, perhaps because I was not expecting it: I picked up a few of the pre-prepared sandwiches because I was going to be on the road, and they were EXCELLENT. I can't remember exactly what it was, but I think chicken pesto? Something like that, but the bread + whatever sauce/mayo thing was inside was great.
(5)Jammie A.
I had the doughnut muffin and it was delicious, surprisingly light and had the perfect amount of cinnamon sugar. It's a year later and I'm still craving one!
(4)Ronnie T.
Yumm!! I am so glad that this place is a good 70 miles north of where I live, or my waistband would seriously grow. Downtown Bakery is a solid, no frills, bakery. They do sticky buns and bread and scones and galettes and macarons (which are to DIE for) etc exceptionally well. Some other reviewer complained about too much butter. ??!!?? I usually hit this place up at the Ferry Plaza when I go, but if you go through Healdsburg stop in here for a treat. Every single fattening calorie was worth it.
(5)David P.
Very quirky local neighborhood bakery. I went to the place and surprised by the (recent) remodel or more like a demodel. Very little in the way of displays up front. Everything was now toward the back on racks or in a small dessert displays to the left. There was someone ahead of me in line with another worker servicing them. The other worker asked me (in a hard to understand voice) what I wanted. "Well, what do you got?" "Everything is out there (where I couldn't see anything because of the other worker in front of the breads). "Can you explain since I can't see?" (I'm paraphrasing now) we've got sourdough, sourdough with walnuts, sourdough, sourdough with multigrain, sourdough with sourdough, a sweet French (which I guess means no sourdough). Bottom line is I felt like I was in a Monty Python skit for SPAM. I ended up eventually being able to see for myself as the other customers cleared away. Went with a 2lb multigrain (sourdough) miche. I was sold when he said that it was $3.13, half price after 5PM. Nice selection of fruit galettes in the display area. I can't say if they have the same things everyday and/or how much they rotate around. As you can tell, I'm not a big sourdough fan, but it was pretty darn good bread. Even better at half price.

I am not ashamed to admit that I am a huge Martha Stewart fan. I love everything about her from her bitchy sass, her creative business sense and even her stint in prison, (which gives her mad street creds, if you ask me). How does Martha Stewart relate to my review of the Downtown Bakery and Creamery in Healdsburg, CA? Well, as an avid fan, I collect all of her cookbooks and over 10 years ago, I discovered a recipe in The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook for Ginger Cookies, which quickly became my husband's all-time-favorite cookie. I make them all the time. When I first found the recipe, I read the intro, "This cookie dough is sold at the Downtown Bakery & Creamery in Healdsburg, California". At the time, I was living in Seattle and thought nothing further about a town and place I had never heard of. Fast forward to now--we live in San Rafael, less than an hour from Healdsburg, CA. A mere coincidence. I just HAD to go to this place that was referenced in Martha Stewart's cookbook, knowing it must be good. We took the short trip up to Healdsburg and are so glad we did. We were so impressed by everything--the service, the atmosphere, the copper-topped tables, and the food! We picked up a roll of the ginger cookie dough from the freezer to bring home. The cookies are just like the recipe in the aforementioned cookbook, but with a whole lot of dangerous convenience. We also tried the famous "donut muffin". It was the afternoon, we got the last one available and while it was good, I bet it would have been a whole lot better earlier in the day. All-in-all, a great place in a really fun town.
(5)bien-elize r.
holy mackerel. I think, wait no I know, I did the running man when I walked in here. Their donut muffins are nothing short of glorious and their raspberry buttercream icing is the heavenly middle between icing and ice cream. friendly staff AND they're in the SF every Saturday. Next stop? ....... obeCITY.
(4)J.A. K.
We are not lovers of the oversweetened, fluffy-soft, standard American danish pastry. And way too many bakeries have gotten raves on Yelp, only to disappoint us. Downtown Bakery, however, made us very happy. They make excellent fresh fruit galettes that occasionally reach sublime. They are simple and perfect, an ideal rebuke to so many restaurants who think desserts have to list at least eight different ingredients in often weird combinations that prove in the end unsatisfying. Coffee is from Flying Goat, with that distinctive mushroom-y aroma. Excellent stuff. Healdsburg is a great little town. Pick up a pastry, get a fabulous cappuccino, and sit on a park bench in the shade to people-watch. It's a wonderful way to relax in the Wine Country.
(4)Richard M.
The sticky buns are sinfully good, the croissants are decadent, and they make good strong coffee that balances out the sweet. We live in Ohio now but every time we come back to NoCal we make this a priority stop. You will NOT be disappointed in this slice of heaven.
(5)Robert H.
Great sticky buns!

Please bring more strawberry-rhubarb galettes to the Ferry Building Farmer's Market. I've gone back 3 times since the first time I was lucky enough to nab the very last strawberry-rhubarb galette and you've been sold out all three times. Last time I tried a donut-muffin and was a bit disappointed. It tasted good enough, I suppose, but by putting "donut" in the name I had extremely high expectations. I take my donuts very seriously. Please do not use their name in vain.

I ate a sticky bun around 9am. It was so good, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I left Healdsburg to go wine tasting, but returned around 1pm to buy a dozen more because it was that good.
(5)Alex L.
Great sticky buns and the breakfast pizza was even better. The breakfast pizza came with an egg over easy in the center for dipping with mushrooms and bacon. It was definitely worth the visit before checking out the wineries on Westside Rd.
(5)Lily L.
poached farm eggs & polenta ingredients here are fresh and taste like they should. the sliced cherry tomatoes in this were divine and the poached eggs perfectly cooked as it oozed onto the polenta. margherita pizza yes, they warn you it takes at least 10 minutes to make, but it's worth the wait. again, simple local ingredients do the trick. the crust is reminiscent of cheeseboard pizza, but not as thin. tomato focaccia a round focaccia topped with tomatoes and cheese. what a treat - the taste is similar to the margherita pizza but doughier and chewier, in a great way. tip: it gets stuffy in here, so order it to go and find a bench in the park across the street.

Have been coming here since I was a kid..It's such a great place to come and sit and have a "Sticky Bun" and coffee..there is more than the sticky bun, but, there is nothing like it when its fresh out of the oven..mmm the Bread Pudding ..now I want one!! Great place to go with family and kids..especially during nice weather.
(5)Connor M.
Great place, i had the bread pudding and the sticky bun and it was amazing and fresh
(5)W M.
Looks fantastic but I did not see the outdoor seating or place we could bring our dog so we ended up going elsewhere. If I'm mistaken I hope someone will inform me but it appears that there is no outdoor seating and it's therefore not dog friendly. This was a surprise because it was listed as dog friendly with outdoor seating in the profile.

I can never go to Healdsburg and leave without some galettes and sticky buns. I mean the sticky buns that Downtown sells, not, well, you know what I mean... Great stuff!
(5)Jim H.
Flew into Santa rosa and had a wonderful breakfast, the sticky buns and the the donut muffins are Heaven, my wife had. The cheesy scramble and I had the Crouque Monsieur, just incredible food!
(5)Lisa B.
Healdsburg has definitively become an overpriced yuppie destination. Hell, yuppies live here now. Back in my youth, it wasn't nearly as yuppified. If my memory serves me correctly, this place has been around forever, and while it's certainly a lot fancier now, there's something to be said for that. They make a lot of their baked goods in Arizmendi fashion - city dwellers will recognize the style - but they have a small but tasty looking brunch menu as well. I had the polenta with vegetables (corn, snap peas, broccoli, carrots etc.) and poached egg, which was perfect. I think poached eggs are actually quite difficult to make correctly, but this one was perfect. My prag had the scrambled eggs, which he seemed to like. They offered me free refills on my iced tea (which would seem obvious, but you'd be surprised), and didn't treat me like a total idiot when I got all overwhelmed by the loud noises and confusing line while trying to order. Yeah, I'm kind of socially inept, but aren't we all?

I wish I could give different star ratings for service vs. food. Food: 5 stars. Service: 1 star. Hence, the 3-star rating. My issue with the service: I don't understand why it is sooooooo confusing to order. They have 2 cash registers and they sporadically let people order at one, then turn people away. It's a MESS to order on the weekends. All they need is a little lesson in customer service and consistency in the way they take orders. And, make sure the people they hire actually want to work there. Then it would be perfect! Note, I love the food. I just can't handle how difficult it is to order and pay. Just have people form ONE line and smile. It's that simple.
(3)Rob G.
Great place to mingle with the locals and have some freshly baked goodies. Best sticky buns ever! We stropped here for breakfast with a view of the town plaza, full of people hanging out, playing and chatting. Everything was good: the blintzes, pancakes, sticky buns, eggs... nothing to complain of other than the fact that they don't take credit/debit cards and when breakfast for 4 amounted to $30+, it's tough.
(4)Mary P.
Darn, by the time I got here, they had run out of the morning buns and the donut muffins! So I ended up with a fig newton and a chocolate macaron. Both were good, but I'm still curious about the bun and muffin...
(4)Kalani C.
Amazing place! Down home, serious bakery that does everything homemade with quality ingrediants. Had their strawberry galette after debating mentally. A sweet fruit filling embraced by a flaky and crisp crust. Wish I had bought more for the flight home. The bulk of their pasteries appear in the French style. Their ice creams looked oh so good and they even sold pie crusts and raw dough for those not willing to slave over awesome crust. Not to mention the hearty loaves behind the counter that was screaming to be bathed in Preston Vineyards' olive oil. I rename this place Downtown Bakery & Dreamery.
(5)Dee C.
4.5 stars the best finds are the ones you stumble upon by chance. we were strolling along downtown healdsburg loving the colonial vibe of the park. we hadn't asked for breakfast recommendations and were meandering in and out of stores. as it was near 9am not much was open. we were waiting for 11am when bella wine caves would open for their "Hot August Weekend" so we could wine taste without feeling like alcoholics. the scent of baking bread and melting cheese lured us in. The food is affordable in this seemingly high-priced town, yet delicious in simplicity. we got the poached farm eggs & polenta and the breakfast pizza. I added salt to mine and we had to wait a bit for the food, but the atmosphere and smells make the experience a treat (or tease) for the senses. this is definitely the place to toast to, "no carb left behind!"
(5)Nic P.
Great place to pickup a pre-made galette or pie crust after hitting the Saturday farmers market but it's impossible to walk out without one of the scrumptious treats from the display counter
(4)Dee I.
Popular spot with the locals. Went in last Saturday with some locals. We waited a while for our order and it was a bit of clusterfu@# with the "first come first serve" get/bus your own table...not to mention rude locals lingering way too long after their meals while clearly many many others were hovering around waiting for tables. But, in the end, the food/pastries were great. Exceptionally great was the mushroom/bacon breakfast pizza minus the egg on top. I ordered the blintzes with mixed berry sauce and a blueberry scone and they were both good but I ended up stealing two slices of my bf's breakfast pizza.
(4)Sarah R.
Yum! Great recommendation! Reasonably priced and delicious! The donut muffin straight from the oven was insanely good, one I'm going to try to make at home for sure! So good! Also loved the sticky bun and the brownie muffin. If you're in town definitely have to check it out, just remember cash only! :-)
(5)Helena W.
Maybe it was the day I went but I wasn't all that impressed. I was just here recently last Sunday for Memorial Day weekend and it was in the middle of the antique fair and it was insanely busy everywhere. I ordered two croissants, two biscottis, a Bavarian raspberry creme cupcake, and a cup of coffee and I paid only $10. However, I wanted to get more than that but there was literally nothing left! It was also very hot inside and the tables and chairs were sticky with crumbs. I guess I'll have to stop by again when it's not so hectic and try some ice cream.
(3)Melinda C.
Sticky buns! The inside of their sticky buns are so good - soft and fluffy, delicious. Vanilla bread pudding cake - thumbs up for yumminess. Chocolate macaron and blueberry scone - good as well. Would love a little more ambiance, but maybe not necessary. :)
(4)Anne T.
Their fig newtons are the best I've ever had. Also, when in season, their plum ice cream is outstanding. Love their apple galettes, and also rhubarb pastries, again when in season. Which brings me to the most important point about this bakery and that is the quality and the fact that they offer what is in season, though it bares mentioning the fig newtons are made from dried figs as they hold up better in cooking (which the owner shared.) Chocolate cookies are lovely, delicate and crispy. Strawberry custard tart is exquisite, even memorable. Seating is family style long tables which customers share. Service is always pleasant and cordial. Customers are asked to bus their own tables.
(4)Chris K.
Pretty good baked goods and good coffee. Service was a little bit scattered, we didn't end up with the items we requested. I would definitely return though.
(4)Marjie T.
we came to try the donut muffin...which was essentially a sugared muffin. i would say that if a donut and a muffin had a baby...this would be it. it isn't the best pastry i've ever had, but it delivered on its promise of what the name suggests.
(4)Mark N.
Alright the food channel freaking promo'd the hell out of this!! So I had to try the famous DONUT MUFFIN!!! OK, I do not like sweets all that much but I freakin was addicted to not only the donut muffin, but the sticky buns, and some strawberry tart. Also we went back the next morning to take some back to san jose. Imagine this fluffy muffin with cinnamon but not too sweeet! The people were cool and they said if i wanted it that I call the creamery and they will have my order at the San Francisco farmer's market can't wait to get some yum!!!
(5)Jennifer M.
We found the Downtown Bakery & Creamery on a recent trip to Healdsburg, and I'll admit it, we went there two out of three mornings of our stay. The sticky buns were divine - slightly crisp on the outside yet soft on the inside with just the right amount of cinnamon and not overly sugary. The blueberry scones were FRESH from the oven (like "had to wait for them" fresh) and hands-down the best I've ever had. We were there early in the am both days and the place was JAMMED (seemed like locals). If it is crowded you can get it to-go and sit in the park across the street.
(4)Sara W.
The desserts here are amazing. I really love the tarts and bread puddings. Also, after a certain time of day, everything gets seriously discounted, like half off. It's small inside, but it's a nice, cozy place to get a warm drink, ice cream, bread, and so on. It's also located in the Healdsburg Plaza, where there are touristy places to shop, and you can sit and eat your treats in the Plaza.
(4)Ron P.
wow. breakfast pizza unbelievable!!!
(5)Elizabeth M.
A little PSA for all of you who complain about the service at Downtown Bakery: it isn't a full service restaurant. If you order breakfast, they give you a number and bring it to you. But as for silverware: get your own. They put the silverware right next to the cash register so you can grab it when you pay. And these people are very busy. Have you not seen the lines? They are bakers and counter staff - busting it to sell and package your perfect baked good. Love it or leave it.
(5)Erika S.
I have been having sticky buns here for 10+ years and they are the stuff of legend. They offer great breakfasts too. I try to visit when I make it down from Seattle....
(4)Dana H.
There are so many places to get a pastry at the Ferry Building Farmers Market on Saturdays. But if you pay attention, you will notice that the only one with a line at all times, is the Downtown Bakery stand. Located in the back portion of the market, these guys have the best pastries. Do not be fooled by all the other stands that have delicious looking pastry. Head straight to the back of the market and order the croissant, baby gallette (with fresh seasonal fruit), or the amazing sticky bun. The sticky buns are made with croissant dough and covered in a sweet cinnamony sticky glaze. You know these guys are the best because they run out of pastry around 11:30 - so no sleeping in if you want flaky buttery pastry!
(5)Quinton J.
GREAT baked Goods and the Homemade Ice Cream is even BETTER. A must stop by if you are foodie and have a sweet tooth!!!
(5)Stefano G.
Although I don't get in as often as I would like to have one of their fresh daily made pastries or a scoop of ice cream to beat the summer heat, one thing I can say is that Downtown Bakery & Creamery has been consistantly delicious throughout the years and an asset to Healdsburg. Keep up the good work!
(5)Don M.
I must say the salad was delicious and the pizza was scrummy. The portions are kind of small and the plates were small too, so it was hard to eat without pushing the food off the plate and onto the table. The copper tables are nice and the people watching off the plaza is great. The staff is a little lost in granolaville and not quite totally focused on customer experience though... The baked goods are probably very good - as that was clearly their main focus and took up most of their space.
(4)Lee G.
I love the fruit pockets. There is isn't another pastry item that Iike more than the rasberry and pear pocket. The wait is not too long, but the staff is generally unfriendly and appear to be in denial about working in food service. But if you don't mind that, definately go there for breakfast, take it togo and eat it in the park.
(4)Shona M.
Like a siren call if I'm within a 40 mile radius doing winy things and visiting friends. I'm partial to the galettes and the tarts. But pretty much everything here that I've had is gooood in the mouth (and a bad on the hips.)
(4)Joon L.
The sticky buns were great. I didn't think they were going to be better than the ones I get at Berkeley and SF, but I think I liked them the better. The donut muffin was good too. I'm taking a star off because the bread pudding was bland and was leaking a lot of liquid. I took one bite and threw it away. I wish I got more sticky buns.

I swear, we will never go back to this place ever again after being treated like a 2 year old today because I was apparently not standing in the "correct" line. My husband and I are from out of town. We decided to take a nice day drive to Healdsburg for Memorial Day. My youngest daughter was married in Healdsburg two years ago. We ate lunch and then walked over to this place for some ice cream with our disabled daughter. I sat at a table with my daughter and my husband ordered ice cream for us, a cookie and coffee for his self. We sat and ate our ice cream and I decided to get up to order a small cup of coffee. Apparently there are a couple of small signs that I did not see that state something about forming one line. There were two cash registers, very confusing, where do you form the one line when you have two cash registers? One cashier was waiting on people and getting them pasteries, the other cashier was waiting on people and getting them a coffee order. Logically, I stood behind the people ordering the coffee. Now the coffee cashier saw me standing there patiently waiting to be next. Plus, my husband had just ordered all this ice cream etc from them. One would think if I were standing in the wrong line, that she would have been nice enough to say something. Oh no, of course not, why would she tell me I'm in the wrong line? She absolutely saw me standing there. She said nothing and a big group of people walked in after me and stood in the other line. She made it a point to ignore me and wait on the other people. I got a sense that she did it on purpose. When I said something to her, ("umm, excuse me") she lectured me in front of everyone about standing in the "wrong line", She rudely said: "We have one line here and one line only". I told her "You know what, forget it". I then went to my husband and said, "Finish your food, we are leaving, I'm going down the street to get a cup of coffee. I've never been treated so rudely and we are NEVER coming back here". My husband then said the same cashier was kind of rude to him when he was trying to order as well. I went down the street to the Goat Milk Coffee Shop and had a very nice cup of coffee and no one lectured me about standing in the "WRONG LINE". I complained about it all the way home which was an hour and a half drive. I don't appreciate having my nice day trip wrecked by a cashier on an apparent power trip.

Best place in town for breakfast. I LOVE their sticky buns, and still buy them every now and then even though prices have gone up a bit. A friend is the breakfast chef, and I've eaten here a few times since they started serving breakfasts. It's always PACKED, which sucks (maybe they'll consider expanding??), and you might not be able to find a seat. Breakfasts are always GREAT. They use Santi's sausage in the eggs, giving it a spicy, tasty kick. If you just want to take out, I would recommend the sticky buns, croissants, and scones, although sometimes they can be dry. The espresso drinks are awesome as well.
(5)Erika B.
i LOVE downtown bakery. My boyfriend lives in Healdsburg so I often spend the weekends there, and we literally go here every weekend, if not twice a weekend. The food is so delicious, and is perfect for a power breakfast, brunch, or just grabbing something quick to go! I very highly recommend the poached eggs and polenta. I get this nearly every time I go, the dish changes a little bit seasonally based on what ingredients are available locally. Sometimes there will be swiss chard, sometimes, leeks, different kinds of potatoes, different vegetables. Always local eggs and always so delicious! The breakfast pizza is also a winner, with a sunny side up egg right on top. And if you want something quick or sweet, the sticky buns are out of this world! Their specialty coffee drinks are also great and they make them very quickly, and the desserts (especially cheesecake) are great and perfect for special occasions! The only thing that can be difficult is its a relatively small space, and is very popular on the weekends with both tourists and locals alike. If you just get a sticky bun or croissant, its best to take it outside to the square if its a nice day. But if you're getting a hot breakfast item, it can be difficult to find seating, there isn't much room for tables and people tend to sit and linger. So especially if you have a party larger than 2, give yourself some time to wait for a spot before you order. Also don't forget - cash or check only! I've forgotten this from time to time since we live in such a debit/credit card world, and have had to awkwardly write a check for like $6.
(5)Keith A.
We tried this place after my daughter told me the donut muffin was featured on Food TV's The Best thing I Ever Ate. I was surprised at how it was just OK. I like cinnamon and sugar mufins but The Best Thing Ever Ate!! I think not. They do have a variety of fresh baked goods but their scones were dry and ginger cookies were again mediocre. My wife did love their hot-cross buns. This is just another nice bakery. The chef that raived about it on TV needs to get oput more often.
(3)Krystal K.
I only tried 2 items: donut muffin and raspberry cupcake. The donut muffin was tasty and we wanted to get a couple more to take home, but by the time we got back to the counter other people took the last two. The raspberry cupcake was very tasty, but I think it was in the refrigerator display too long. The frosting was somewhat hard and it was easier to eat after I let it sit at room temperature for a bit. We came in the afternoon so there wasn't much of a bread selection. Overal we would return if we end up in the area again.
(4)Katie A.
I gained so much weight working there, but it was worth it. The food is delicious. Definitely try the breakfast pizza or cheezy scrambled eggs from the cafe. The ice cream is really good. Everything is really good, actually. It can be really crazy some weekends (line out the door with no where to sit), but that's just a sign of how good it is.
(5)Betty T.
had brunch here on Sunday. The latte was creamy but lacked a dose of real espresso oomph. Poached eggs with polenta with the egg properly cooked with a nice ooziness, just lacked some salt. It came with sauteed romano beans and tomatoes. Pretty yummy in general. The desserts is definitely where they shined. The almond tart--like a delicious chewy caramelly almond brittle, raspberry cupcake with raspberry buttercream--just sweet enough with raspberries throughout the cake, ginger cookie--chewy, with a nice strength in spice.
(4)chris e.
okay, i'm a local and i prefer Costeaux. Although their donut muffin is pretty shweet.
(2)Dre B.
They make the best scones! I love stopping in to see what pastries are new. They also serve hot beverages (hot coco is yummy).
(5)Jennifer O.
Scrum-diddely-umptious. Quite possibly the best chocolate croissant I've ever had in my life. Now if my cappuccino would have been zapped into my hand straight from Blue Bottle on Linden, I might have not bothered moving on to wine-tasting!
(5)Tara H.
Love the sticky buns and the dounut muffins!
(5)Michele P.
Always loaded with delectable goodies. Love the long table for community meals and family style eating. Our one disappointment is that unlike when they first opened they have since made the scones, galettes, and turnovers way too sweet. The fruit is sweet enough my friends...
(3)Catherine R.
Not sure what made me sick later on in the day, but we went to the bakery and split the open faced ham and cheese with a poached egg on the side. My blood sugar at an all time low, I was really sad when I found a big black hair in the sammich, took it back- they made a new one and comped me a compote- hmm that rhymes in a funny kinda way. Annnyway- it was good when I got it, and later on I felt kinda funky but I had also had enough cheese to kill a small animal, so Im not sure what happened. They were really gracious about the whole thing, and the locals really love this place. The fig newtons were rad too.
(4)Jane M.
Don't eat breakfast here, although it's fine. Buy the pastries, which are out of this world. The fruit gallettes, the sticky buns and the scones have got to be the best in the western hemisphere. The frozen dough for chocolate chip cookies is so good you'll never go back to Nestle's.
(5)Erik S.
Best bakery outside of San Francisco. This place has outstanding pastries and goodies. Great coffee and ice cream to boot. I go here every time I'm in Healdsburg. Get a donut muffin if nothing else.
(5)Doug ..
ive only had the sticky bun there.. but the sticky bun has made me and girl talk about driving all 143.8 miles back and forth from sf to grab a couple sticky buns... we've yet to act on this craving... but soon healdsburg!
(5)Jessica T.
We randomly wandered in on a recent trip to Healdsburg and had the most delicious brunch - my polenta with vegetables (corn, green beans, cherry tomatoes, basil) and poached eggs was perfectly flavorful and super fresh. The eggs were slightly, slightly too poached, but poached eggs are quite tricky, and these were almost perfect, and actually significantly better than most restaurant attempts. I'm deducting one star because my husband's dish (poached eggs on truffled croissant) was accidentally delivered to another table when the patron at that table yelled out "hey, that's mine!" as it was going by, and the server gave it to him immediately, without thinking about it. This guy had just taken his seat, and the dish was obviously not his, which the server realized right away, but it was too late. They were apologetic but it still took them about 20 minutes to put together another dish for my hub, by that time, he had transformed into cranky, hungry hub. So, that was a bummer, and they could work on their customer service. The truffled poached eggs were quite delicious as well when they finally arrived, take two. I happened to order the famed donut muffin, purely out of curiosity as I hadn't read any of these yelp reviews and realized its popularity, and it was tasty to nibble on while waiting for our dishes.
(4)Young K.
Very good baked goods. The sticky buns were my favorite. On the weekends, they also have breakfasts and lunches. Real good stuff for relatively low prices.
(4)Jeannie L.
Super yummy breakfast platter with buttery toasted croissant and scrambled eggs. The service is pretty slow though.
(4)Sam S.
Have you heard of the fabled donut muffin from the Downtown Bakery in Healdsburg? Or perhaps you may have caught wind of the lovely scones and jams that make their home at this truly fine establishment. Coffee anyone?
(4)Kristen T.
Sticky buns, donut muffins, galettes, Como loaves ... I think this is the best bakery in Sonoma County. And their coffee's great. Enjoy a pastry on the bench outside and watch the world go by.
(5)Mariangela S.
Fantastic! The sour cherry galette and triple ginger cookie which were our small introduction to Downtown Bakery which has the most inviting smells in the plaza. We stayed in Sonoma the next day and drove all the way back to Healdsburg to have the breakfast pizza (with an egg in the middle) - one of the best I have ever had - the crust was just incredible! We also had the croque madame (again with egg) that was their own take on a tartine and much lighter than the usual croque sandwich. So so delicious - and for lucky residents they sell their cookie doughs, tart doughs, and puff doughs. They also have ice cream sandwiches - my favorite. I will have to go back!
(5)John M.
Two words... STICKY BUNS!!!! Yummy!
(5)Melinda B.
The richest chocolate croissants ever, and a superb cup of latte. I like that it was filled with locals, who were super friendly to us. I guess because it was early on a Saturday (9am), and it wasn't quite tourist season yet....but we'd definitely go back. They have pie crusts and dough to take home as well, also nice egg entrees for breakfast and home made ice cream. We'll be back to try that soon!
(5)Brian M.
I'm not usually much of a scone-eater. They typically taste like stick of butter with a flour binding. But, this blueberry scone was a thing of beauty. Nice independent vibe inside.
(4)Christina S.
I am addicted to their little stand at the San Francisco Farmer's Market at Ferry Plaza - their morning buns are perfectly sweet and flaky and delicious, and their brownie cupcakes are to die for! I keep wanting to try the other goodies, but I can't seem to resist the morning buns. I've heard that the doughnut muffins have quite a following too!
(5)kimberly w.
honestly, the best there imho is the ice cream sandwich. delicious homemade cookies and their amazing ice cream inside. you never know exactly which flavors they'll have. they're all great!
(4)Uli B.
I am really disappointed with how glitzy, fake and pretentious Healdsburg has become...it feels like a Disneyland for wine-wannabe-connoisseurs. The Downtown Bakery, however, is totally the opposite: this is a place where the few locals that have left mingle with the more adventurous tourists. At 6am in the morning, this is the only place that is open in town and so you will find a nice selection of day laborers, senior citizens and jetlaged tourists...many of them gathering at the communal tables and gossiping over a cup of coffee and a particularly sticky bun. This place reminds me of other bakeries in the Bay Area such as the Cheeseboard in Berkely, the Arizmendy Bakeries in San Francisco and Oakland or the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes. The focus here is on the product, not on how it's displayed!
(5)Angelica Y.
Saw this place featured on one of the food network shows. One of the rare times I was in Healdsburg I made sure I checked this place out! Had to get a sticky bun and the doughnut muffin, and I threw in a brownie cupcake. DELICIOUS! Staff there are super nice! Would definitely come back if I'm ever nearby again =)
(5)Veronica M.
From Chez Panisse alums, over twenty years ago. My bf brought me here back in the nineties, because she's a big Alice Waters/Chez Panisse fan. We used to call her our own Martha Stewart. Anyhow, of course I went ga-ga for the mass array of stellar baked goods. I always drool for baked goods. I remember one particular visit; it was summer & I saw they had peach jam. Peaches are my favorite fruit, so I thought it was some sort of kismet message from the universe that I was supposed to buy this jam. So, of course, I did. And of course, it was fabulous. Forward several, well interspersed visits throughout a couple of decades, to last Sunday. I hadn't been in in at least 2 years. It was just before closing, & there was one almond tart left. Even at the end of the day, it looked totally tempting. Even though we were booked for dinner @ Coppola's in a couple of hours, & it's a heavier, richer treat, I had to snag it. Then, there were the fig newtons. Fig newtons so moist, & so big, they looked like they were on steroids. A must. The almond tart was honestly a tad dry at the ends. But that was not enough to take away from its all around glory. Decadent & powerfully delicious. I don't know now if I'll ever come in here & be able to not order at least a slice. Maybe the best fig newton I've ever had. Not like your conventional fig newtons that your folks got for you when you were a kid. This version is uber moist on the inside, & the "crust" was soft & tender. Not sweet. This is a very grown-up fig newton; & divinely so. The rugelach we ordered was a disappointment. It was dry AND bland. Pass. Overall, still very superior over the baked goods available in Sonoma. You may have more options there, but having more options of mediocrity is pointless, right? 4 &1/2 stars.
(4)Logan P.
You can't compare this place to any other bakery or coffee shop in Healdsburg, The Downtown Bakery and Creamery is the best!! From the espresso that is better than flying goat, to the insanely good baked goods, to the incredible sandwiches and hot meals they serve, this is a quintessential small town, high quality food establishment and possibly one of my all time favorites in Sonoma County in general. Lines can be long due to the high demand for their amazingness, but well worth the time. Don't walk passed this place without trying the passionfruit tart or the polenta. Cant say enough good things about this place!
(5)Sandy L.
There's always a line! But the line moves quickly. The first few times I went, I only ordered the "famous" donut muffin, but the last time, we ventured out and ordered a bit of everything. Something w berries (yum), something w like apple (yum), a cookie (yum), something chocolatey (yum) and the sticky bun (yum). I'm not as impressed w the coffee, so, go up the block a bit and have an iced coffee from Flying Goat Coffee, its a bit pricey, but so good.
(5)Angie C.
Long lines but pretty darn good breakfasts. I had the pain au chocolate, the poached eggs with polenta, tried the quiche and breakfast sandwich and all were very good.
(4)Alexis C.
Very crowded, stood at the register for awhile but had to call out to receive service and be attended to. Staff was abrupt/ rude and in a hurry to move me out of the store. The "lox bagel" is nothing more then a plain bagel served with a tiny amount of pre made whipped salmon cream cheese and the scrambled eggs are served runny. I doubt I'll be moved to eat here in the near future....such a disappointment!
(1)Daniel H.
My client told me about this place and how their sticky buns were very good. I convinced my coworkers to come here for breakfast one morning. It was just after 8am and the parking was plentiful around the square in downtown Healdsburg. This place was small and there were already a few people eating their breakfast inside. One of the displays next to the refrigerator had all kinds of pastries and dessert items. The eclair I saw was big for $3 which I would say would be worth it. I actually came here just for a sticky bun ($2.50). The stick bun was warm and I assumed fresh. I didn't order any beverages so I can't comment on those. We didn't eat there but took our food to go. The sticky bun was delicious and very soft on the inside. I definitely recommend the sticky buns. The other food looked good here and I would have to try out the others if I'm in the area next time.

Skip the sticky bun and get a slice of quiche and a chocolate croissant. Husband liked the Americano. We came back 2 days in a row to get another croissant!

Best of Healdsburg - the Breakfast pizza. Not too many people know about it but take it from a local, it's great. Chocolate pudding, tarts, focaccia bread are wonderful as well.

My favorite place to grab some breakfast and a pastry in Healdsburg. I love their homemade english muffins with blackberry jam. I always take home a jar of their wild blackberry jam -- it's the best I've ever had. I also tried their sour cherry galette. My favorite part of pies is the crust, so this was like heaven for me. Their quiche is also yummy.
(5)Muir B.
Would you be a happy customer if you ordered an $18, 8 inch cherry pie, got home and found it was a "blackened" cherry pie with half the filling boiled out and the crust blackened? What I received should have been pulled the minute it came out of the oven and thrown away, not boxed up and sold to a regular customer. It's one thing when you come in and they are displaying burned goods for sale, you don't have to buy them (and they do this). I'm giving them an okay because well some of what they sell, like the donut muffins, sticky buns and Como bread are fabulous, but do not order ahead because they burn things all the time and still sell them, there does not appear to be any quality control beyond seeing it yourself.

We stopped here in the morning before renting kayaks for the afternoon. Wonderful location and friendly service. We got the sticky buns, chocolate eclair, an apple tarte, and a brownie cupcake to try a few options while on our vacation. Everything was delicious and I can see why there were so many recommendations to this lovely place! Best sticky buns we've ever had. Thank you - I would recommend to a friend!

Picked this place on a gamble because it was the first place on the list for Heldsberg with only one dollar sign. And I definitely didn't regret it. We were helped quickly, and got our food within five minutes. I got the farm eggs and polenta and boy was it tasty. This place is great.
(5)Neil W.
This was not exactly what I expected. Based on the other bakeries in town, I was expecting something a little fancier. This was just a coffee shop with great baked goods. We got the donut muffin and a few other select items. We also picked up some jam for a friend. The donut muffin is very simple, but something I could eat a lot of. It is just donut dough baked like a muffin and covered in cinnamon and sugar. It is wonderful with coffee. My friends sent me a picture of jam that was gone in a few days. The photo of the empty jar looked as though they had violated it in some ungodly way.

We stopped here on a road trip and it was the highlight of the day. We had the donut muffin, sticky bun, blueberry scone, and a bagel. If you order a pastry, definitely ask them to warm it up for you---this is particularly true for the donut muffin which is so much better warmed up! The sticky bun was my absolute favorite. I dreamed about it for days. Staff didn't seem particularly friendly to non-locals but the delicious pastries and good prices made up for it.

It's been nearly a week, and I'm still dreaming of my awesome breakfast. I had the pleasure of sampling three items, so let me start with my order. The breakfast sandwich, fluffy scrambled eggs, house made sausage, locally produced sharp cheddar cheese served on a scrumptious sourdough biscuit. Every bite was simply magical as this may be the best breakfast sandwich in the North Bay. My wife went with the poached eggs, served with french greens over polenta. The eggs were perfect and all the flavors will send you to heaven and back. Our friends shared the breakfast pizza. Sourdough crust, sprinkled with bacon and other tasty treats and topped with a fried egg. This is a real winner! I loved the low key casual setting, just place your order at the cashier and find a seat in the small quaint dining room. Or if you prefer, get it to go and sit under a tree in the middle of the Healdsburg Square.
(5)Ed M.
6 of us (3 adults, 3 grandkids) went here for ice cream. All six of us gave the home made ice cream 5 s. It was a great treat. All of us got our favorites. The service was courteous and prompt. We've bookmarked this place for future trips to Healdsburg.
(5)Erica B.
What can we say, we are locals, love it here as it's one of our "go to's." The sticky bun is a must, bring your own coffee cup and save a little $ on your morning joe. It can get crowded with the tourists on the weekends, but no matter. Sometimes we bear the crowds, other times we go on off hours. Ask about their "happy hour" right before closing where you can save a little bit of dough. Did I mention to try their sticky buns... ;)
(5)Annamaria K.
I have to say it is rather disappointing experience for me. I visited on Sunday around 11am. It was crowded. I waited for my eggs over 15/20mins...unfortunately, I saw how it was prepared...I lost all my appetite. The cook kept the eggshells next to the prepared food. In every 5mins with his bare hands tossed them in the exposed garbage next to the fresh food. Then, not washing hands or the plate went back to the stove with the dirty plate..he reused it...I think this place has some sanitary problems... Don't recommend it to eat here. Perhaps the bakery part is better.

Unfortunately for me, they ran out of the famous sticky bun while I was visiting. But I did buy a variety of goodies to try. *Chocolate Macarons - it was good, large, and cheap *Apricot Pocket - loved it *Bread Pudding - too eggy on the bottom while the top didn't have enough egg; not incorporated enough *Summer Pudding - bit soggy after 6 hours, lots of berries. should of ate this one immediately *Fig Newton - huge, homemade, not too sweet, it was wonderful, wish I bought more. now I am looking for figs in every store *Donut Muffin - it is the cake type of donut, not the raised type of donut. I am not a big fan of cake donut *Como loaf bread - it is Italian rustic bread, I did not have lunch meat at home so made myself a PBJ for breakfast. It was chewy and hearty, I was not hungry even when lunch time rolled around. Tip - you can get their recipes from their website and make it at home, but it looks complicated, lots of ingredients, lot of steps; that is why they are so good. downtownbakery.net/recip…

I usually love this place and go frequently to pick up pastries for my clients. But today I was thoroughly disappointed. I ordered an order to go 30 minutes before picking it up and when I got there there was a line outside the door. I went to the open cash register and told them I needed to pick up my order and they told me I needed to wait in line. I explained to her that I had an important meeting, hence ordering the pastries in advance, and they were unwilling to help. I ended up having to cancel my order and go somewhere else because it was taking so long. I wish they would've been considerate and appreciative of my regular business. I go there frequently and I would expect A higher level of customer service from them. Their pastries are delicious, but I've never been impressed with their service. That can ruin even the most delicious croissant.
(1)Kelly S.
Cute! Delicious! Convenient! Chai latte and various pastries were had, and none disappointed. Would definitely come back and try the made-in-house marshmallows next time!
(5)Judson R.
Great quality. I thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast sandwich and my wife loved her quiche. Wonderful pastries and coffee to get you started on your day.
(5)Diane H.
Stopped in before going to Rodney Strong winery and we were very pleased with a light snack before drinking wine! A croissant, brownie cupcake and blueberry scone were all enjoyed. Place is busy, but great seating family style!
(4)Miriam W.
This place is completely about the baked goods without pretension or the chi-chi vibe of much of the rest of Healdsburg even though it's right on the central square. We've been coming for years during our holiday--early in the day you have more options, but some really good things last till afternoon. Like others say, the sticky buns are croissant-like buttery dough w/real sugar (not corn syrup--yuck) and crisp edges. The fruit galettes are always wonderful---really good flakey pie-crust folded rustic-style around fabulous in-season Sonoma fruit (peach & blackberry, nectarine and cherry this time around). On the rec of another Yelper tried the fig newton--we split one for dessert--and it made me flash back to one of Charles Dickens's Christmas feast scenes--the cake was delicately spiced--not just cinnamon, maybe allspice and ginger?--and the filling was moist, rich, plummy fig---I wanted to put holly on top and call it Christmas cake (or really fab hamantaschen). We've also bought the Italian loaf bread--good for sandwiches, but with large holes it makes for better toast--and sourdough baguette--great flavor but a rather tough crust, so split it for sandwiches instead of slicing. I'd trust anything they made.

Went in here after walking around town. The girls wanted to get some ice-cream and baked goods. The girls had sorbet. Husband and I ordered ice-cream. Then I ordered the rhubarb tart, and almond bar for the girls. After paying for the items, we sat down inside the store to eat our treats. After a few minutes, the ice-cream lady yelled out, "So are you done with your oder?" -- Being the only people who were sitting at the time, guess she was talking to us. We turned around and said yes. Then she said, "Well you have to pay for it too, you know!" --- We're all -- WTH????! We wondered if we were a white family, would she have talked to us like that? What? Did she think we were going to eat and run? We said to ourselves, lucky we didn't walk out the store because she might've run after us and yelled "Hey! you didn't pay for that yet!"...LOL... If you're ever in the store, the ice-cream counter was about 4ft away from the register and maybe even a shorter distance. She even looked up when I asked the family how many ice-cream am I paying for as I was at the register. As for the sweets: Sorbet - too much ice crystals -- not enough taste Ice-cream - not creamy enough - Ben n Jerry's taste better. Rhubarb tart - was OK. Not going back to that place again.
(2)Robin C.
So I'm sitting outside of this place and I've just polished off an eclaire and wondered why the hell I've never reviewed this place after all these years. That chocolate gooey goodness is promoting me to write one now. Ok, so let me start by saying they make the greatest eclaires IN THE WORLD. If you are easily addicted to food, don't eat it. You'll get so hooked. I've had a ton of items here - blue cheese and onion focaccia, sticky buns, pastries, pudding, cheesecakes, etc and they are all top notch. Best bakery, hands down!
(5)Rachelle T.
I tried the donut muffin that everyone recommends and was completely disappointed. I think I was expecting more donut than muffin, but it turned out to be a dense, sugar topped muffin. There was nothing light about it. I think if they named it a sugar muffin, I would have better set my expectations, but at the same time, would have probably not ordered it. On the plus side, service was friendly.
(2)Emily C.
Just ok. Limited breakfast options and the pancakes were subpar-more eggy than fluffy. Frozen blueberries and the cups were terrible plastic things you get at the dentists office. Next time I would take something from the bakery to go.
(2)Jister Y.
Short and sweet review for blueberry pancakes and quiche. The blueberry pancakes were burnt and flat. I was hoping for a fluffy pancake but .... it was a huge disappointment. The quiche wasn't a big hit either. That being said, this is a bakery and therefore, we were the idiots to order breakfast at a bakery.
(3)V. R.
We have been coming here for years and it is usually very nice. Yesterday however we had a disappointing adventure. We have always enjoyed their bread pudding, creamy eggy custard ladled over their brioche bread and baked to delicious perfection. This time though we would try their Summer pudding $6. Not at all similar, no custard or anything pudding like. Berries overly sweetened and just fruit juices to moisten the brioche. Soggy and useless we really felt cheated. When we complained the counter person just stared at us blankly, no apology or invitation to try something else. Useless. On our walk around town we discovered two other bakery type shops, both are open three hours longer than this place so we need never return! YAY!!!!!
(2)Oulie T.
Who knew the town of Healdsburg was so cute! It felt just like being in Sonoma but the bakery offerings here trumps any baked goods we tried in Sonoma. We knew we were in for a treat when we found out they feature their products at the SF farmers market. We love SF farmers market fare. We came in a little after 7am and the locals were already lined up getting their morning fix. We were initially disappointed to find out their hearty breakfast dishes were only offered Sunday through Monday and we happened to patronize them on a Tuesday. Boohooo. I wept a little. We made do with a nice quiche, their sticky bun and an almond covered cake thing which I didn't get the proper name for. The almond cake was amazing! We both expected it to be dense and heavy but it was surprisingly very light. Well done guys! I got a loaf of their Italian country loaf to go per the recommendation of the lovely, helpful and friendly staff as they said it was easily paired with most foods. It was delish on its own and I had to fight for my share.
(5)Amber M.
$9 got us four tantalizing baked goods. Sticky bun was chewy, soft, and perfect. Vanilla bean bread pudding was very custard-y, but more a hit for my dining companion than me. The brownie was surprisingly not that sweet, which I didn't really care for at the moment because I was looking for something really decadent. The butterscotch cupcake was dry and crumbly, more like a bread, but the frosting was mouth-watering! The gal at the front was friendly, patient, and helpful in guiding us through our baked goods selecting safari. Will definitely return!
(4)Nicole V.
This is a very dangerous place if you have a sweet tooth! When you walk in you immediately smell the fresh sticky buns, and they are as delicious as they smell! The case of goodies like tiramisu, chocolate eclairs, bread pudding, and much more will have your mouth watering before you even get the chance to order. The staff is always really friendly and the best thing is they also have hot breakfast food :) Another tip: they sell things like pie crust, doughs, and mixes for you to take home and make!! Best bakery in Healdsburg for sure for sticky buns and all other breakfast treats and desserts! ( they also make homemade fig newtons)
(5)Scott S.
"We have a $10 minimum on credit card purchases". And you now have one fewer stars as a result of that policy. Knock another one off for the disorganized line. A crowd is great, but you need to organize it. Look up once to see how cranky everyone is, and do something about it. Finally, a 25 minute wait for an English muffin is a little long. The food was good. Lots of variety for a bakery. Would love to try the breakfast pizza sometime.
(2)Taylor B.
They have the best breakfast pizza ever. It's only available Friday through Monday but you have to try it. If heaven was in food form, this would be it. Everything else is amazing too but especially the pizza.
(5)Beatrice W.
Believe the reviews and try these morning buns!! The texture is more like a croissant than a cinnamon bun and the edges are baked to a perfect crispness. We got them on a Sunday morning and got them straight off the baking sheet so they were still slightly warm. The blackberry morning bun is great also - they use fresh blackberries, not a jam. My friend liked the morning bun so much that after he devoured his first one, he waited in line to purchase two more.
(5)Chun P.
Sorry Yelpers, but I found the fabeled "Donut Muffin" incredibly overrated. Its good, but nothing to rave about or go out of the way for. But the $4 Bacon-Mushroom Quice is good and makes a nice light breakfast. Wifey's Sticky Ben: Good. $.75 Biscotti: Good, but could be bigger. Seating arragement is a bit awkward with just two long tables. No bathroom, so be sure to go potty before coming here.
(4)Shadow L.
Cupcake was very tasty but I was disappointed with the milkshake. I think it had too much ice when it was blended. It was very hard to taste any flavor.
(2)Paul S.
We are blessed in Sonoma County with an abundance of fantastic bakeries. This one, on the square in Downtown Healdsburg, was one of the first to receive critical acclaim. I am happy to report, many years on, that the bakery continues to perform at an extraordinarily high level. Pastries and breads are delicious, artisinal and diverse. Everything else I've had there, including coffee, has been spot on. Not fancy or "hip" like the busier coffee shop down the street, but quietly, expertly, endearingly perfect.
(5)Norman B.
This review is for the ice creams only, which are very good. They taste freshly made and of the named ingredients, something the big chains do not seem to manage. My only complaint is that, if you want two scoops, you can't get a cone. Nevertheless, it's a must visit if in Healdsburg on a hot day. I'm not sure I'd want to eat here. It's very old-fashioned inside with extremely tired and depressing furniture and lighting.
(4)Yun C.
No folks, I didn't drive 2+ hours from where I live just to get to this bakery to try their famous sticky bun and donut muffin... I was there for business and decided to make a quick culinary stop to the place that was featured in Food Network's best thing I've ever ate. Got there around 9:30AM and there was a line at the cashier. The line moved fairly quick though. Most of the tables were dirty and occupied. The store is small with very limited seating inside and I think there was probably a small table for two outside. I ordered a sticky bun, a donut muffin, a fig newtown and a medium size coffee. I braved myself to share a (dirty) table with another customer... It was a small place so I think everyone didn't seem to mind sharing spaces with others. Ok, now the food...sticky bun was very very very good! Was it the best thing that I ever ate? hmmm maybe not hahahahaha....but it was very good. I hate cinnamon but I actually enjoyed my sticky bun. It was not overly spiced with cinnamon and to the contrary to most sticky buns...it wasn't overly sweetened. The dough was fluffy and soft and the caramelized sugar around the bun made it delightful to have a little crunch on every bite. yummm! The donut muffin was meeeeeehhhhh....It was dense, dry and a bit messy with the powder sugar...will not get this again. The fig newton.. well..I've never been a big fan of it.. but it was probably my first homemade fig newton. Again, I appreciate that it wasn't too sweet, and there was lots/generous portion of figs inside...not bad! Coffee was standard.. better than starbucks though hehehe! So now... will I drive all the way to Healdsburg for sticky buns? NO!! Will I stop by again when I'm in the area for sticky buns? most likely yes! But you know folks... not sure if it's the same owner..but their sticky buns here remind me of the ones I had from a little bakery in Pt. Reyes area near Tomales Bay. Over there.. they call them.. the morning buns. The bakery does look pretty solid though.. if it wasn't an overnight business trip, I would certainly snag a couple fresh loafs of bread (and some desserts) to go... they looked scrumptious and the whole place smelled like your grandma's house (well..assuming your grandma is like Paula Dean hehe!)
(3)Kevin F.
Try the soup here, try the half-off baked goods at 4:30! Hangout and plug in your computer in two of the plugs, one under the front counter and the other next to the middle table on the wall. There ahem, may be a wi-fi connection the vicinity you can use, as they don't have one themselves.
(5)Joel R.
My wife and I passed through for breakfast. We had a great experience! The coffee was tasty. The sandwiches were awesome and the service was very friendly and fast! The pastries looked excellent but we didn't get around to those :-)
(5)Jason Z.
Been here a few times and I have a great bit every time. There's no bathroom which blows. The food is amazing and you can really enjoy an amazing pastry. The staff is nice but somewhat slow. They always seem confused about stuff. I do like coming here.
(4)C S.
You've got to be ok with a fast and loose atmosphere (tables need a wipe down, self serve forks are out, etc.), but the food is out of this world. Ordered 2 egg dishes (Poached egg chicken hash and Joe's Breakfast Pizza) and was blown away at how layered and fresh everything tasted. Coffee was also incredible and so was the service (happy/friendly employees), so definitely coming back the next time we're in Healdsburg.
(5)Jason L.
Don't think they have AC in there, but who cares when you're eating ice cream! Had a sample of their mexican chocolate sherbert. Let's just say, I was SOLD!! Really friendly staff... they let my daughter use their restroom even though there's a sign saying no public restrooms.
(5)Carolina H.
Came here for the first time because I've been a fan of Costeaux most of the time. Now I have a new fave place. Tried the ff: Mexican chocolate sorbet is sooo darn good and the butterscotch pecan ice cream is to die for. Love love love! The almond bar and brownie muffin was excellent! Next time will be the sticky bun yes!
(5)Warren F.
I think if they threw a shoe in their oven they can probably make it taste great too! Everything I have ever eaten there has been solid! Donut muffins are my favorite but the breakfast pizza was a great choice too!
(5)Camille O.
In a town full of uppity restaurants catering to out-of-town foodies' high expectations, it's wonderful to experience an establishment that's survived the decades of primping with no-fuss food and excellent baked goods. Copper top tables and bar seating at the windows play host to locals and tourists alike, and the place whips into a flurry of kitchen sounds and conversation early in the morn. Don't go in expecting to be waited on hand and foot- be sure to grab your silverware and napkins after you order and know you're expected to bus your own table. You better be in the right line (there's only one!) and have your order ready- the employees move quickly and speak loudly in the small space behind the counter, and while you may have to wait outside the door in line on a weekend morning, it moves quickly and it's well worth it. My favorites: sticky buns, blueberry pancakes, Joe's breakfast pizza, and the focaccia volcanoes (great for a wine-taster's picnic). Also: visit the bakery in the late afternoon and score discount goods! The pretty little desserts in the rotating case are not too be passed by- Bavarian fruit tarts, chocolate eclair, cheesecakes are not meant to tease! Accept your fate and just enjoy the sugar binge.
(5)Michele L.
I've been wanting to come to this bakery since I don't know when. I first heard about this place on the Food Network which showcased their donut muffin and sticky buns. So when we were spending a weekend in Healdsburg, I knew I wanted to come here. I was not impressed. First of all, I'm not even sure what was wrong since everyone that worked there had an attitude problem. Literally, anyone I spoke to from the ordering process to paying, felt like they wanted to be somewhere else. If I knew I was going to be given the cold shoulder, I would've gone somewhere else. Anyways, since we were already in line and I've been wanting to try the pastries, we sucked it up. We ordered the donut muffin, sticky bun, and blueberry pancakes. The blueberry pancakes literally took 20 minutes to make. Don't ask me why. So while we waited, we tried out the infamous donut muffin and the sticky bun. Ehhhh......back to the service, not worth it. I would've been okay with going to the coffee shop next door and getting one of their pastries. Once we finally got the blueberry pancakes, well, they were lackluster. I don't cook, but I think I could've done WAY better. The pancakes were close to borderline being underdone. Definitely don't think I'll make a special trip here again.
(2)Ashley C.
This bakery is fantastic. The had the sticky buns and croissants - both top notch. The next time we're in CA we'll definitely be stopping by again. I wish they shipped their goods - I would definitely take advantage of that.
(5)Anika E.
When you walk in, you are instantly snuggled by the scent of pie shells baking. I knew I was in love. We stopped through early for breakfast, and couldn't pass up a few snacks for later... The Croque Madame and breakfast pizza were delicious! The croissant was, dare I say, perfect -- so flaky!! The pizza had savory mushroom, and an egg in the middle...mm! We nabbed some fig "newtons" and an almond tart...you can tell they use the best ingredients. Note: free refills on iced coffee, and minimum of $10 to use a card.
(5)Sean C.
I read all the reviews about the sticky buns. I braced myself for greatness. I hyped them up in my mind for a half mile as I walked over there. Then I took a bite, and... I believed. They are that good. I can't wait to come back. The place just gives the feeling that they care deeply about the food they serve. This sticky bun was no accident. Somebody researched them, baked them all night long, tweaking and adjusting the recipe, then baked them all night long again. They aren't life changing, but they sure are life-enriching.
(5)Cindy M.
Everytine i'm in Healdsburg I have to stop here. Yummy! Have tried numerous items and have never been dissapointed. When I don't have time, or want to make my own I have to get the morning muffin, delicious.
(5)Ye H.
Stopped here for coffee and a bite on our way up north. Great, fresh bagel and great coffee. Exactly what I was looking for. Everyone there, including the customers, was super nice.
(4)Debbie T.
5 days after the first review ....everything in the box was delish! Can't decide which of the four I liked better. Thank goodness we decided we take another day trip to Healdsburg. Destination downtown bakery and cafe!
(5)Elaine L.
My bf and I wanted a light lunch/snack but came when they stopped serving ordered lunch so we just got what was already made. - focaccia bread with blue cheese, onions, and olives. I wish we could have warmed it up in the oven but they only offered their microwave which we declined. The blue cheese was too overwhelming. -bread pudding: I liked the top crunch but the bottom was almost like a cold custard that felt a little disjointed with the top; as if I was eating two diff desserts -sticky buns: I had my doubts but man these sticky buns are GOOOD. flaky and the perfect sweetness. I wish I ordered more. I would come back just for the sticky buns. 4 stars for the sticky buns. YUM. 3 stars for the rest of the items we got.
(3)Dre S.
YUMMY! They have the most delicious, flaky pain au chocolat I've ever had. Their lemon tart, passion fruit tart with Bavarian crème, blueberry scone and coffee are all very delicious too. I haven't tried any of their savory foods, but I hope to soon. It's always very busy, but if you're patient and ready with your order, the staff is always helpful and kind. They also have a freezer with ready-made doughs, etc for you to take home and bake off yourself. I used to only go to Cousteaux (which is good), but I'm a Downtown Bakery faithful now.
(5)Leslie K.
Every time I visit Healdsburg -- for the 20-something years I've been in California -- I have to stop by this place. If it's crowded, which it often is, I'll just take a few deep whiffs of the deliciousness in the air. But now that I'm on a cupcake craze, I had to be patient and wait my turn. I purchased the following: * blackberry coffee crumb cake: very mild...I kind of wanted a bit more sweetness. It was like focaccia with berries. * macaron with raspberry filling: nice, small, not as good as my local patisserie * chocolate chip cupcake: godly...or goddessly...there were 3 layers - (1) bottom filled with chocolate chips, (2) vanilla cake, and (3) dark chocolate frosting. I put the cupcake in the microwave for a few seconds and the frosting just oozed down....it was wonderful! * brownie cupcake: not really a cupcake but a tasty dark chocolate brownie in the shape of a cupcake. Very good...not too sweet. * Vanilla cupcake: I'm not sure what the frosting was but I'm pretty sure it was just listed as "vanilla" but the frosting was more complex than your average vanilla. The cake was fluffy.
(4)Sean H.
Go here all the time! All the food is good. Sticky buns, Joe's pizza, chessy scramble, defiantly get some dough to make your own creation.
(5)Amanda M.
A great place to grab breakfast in Healdsburg. I had a pain au chocolat and a chai latte one day and a cheddar cheese and thyme scone another time. The scone was better than the pain au chocolat. Chai was good. There was a line but it moves fast. You can dine in or grab to go. They also sell ready-made cookie and pastry dough for sale in the freezer area.
(4)Josh O.
I got a morning bun and a sticky bun. Also got a mocha and it was pretty good. I didn't have to wait long to get the food and drink even though the place was very crowded, so big kudos to the staff in being organized and efficient.
(4)J D.
My husband and I both ordered the breakfast sandwich and were greatly disappointed. The egg portion was so small that I wonder where they get eggs that size. The homemade sausage was dry and both of us disliked the flavor. In fact, I thought it tasted so bad that I couldn't finish it. We ordered a blueberry scone, which was surprisingly disappointing. After all, how bad can a scone be? But this was tiny, tasteless, and it literally had only two berries in it. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things, but it was so bad that we will not return.
(2)Victoria C.
They're sticky bun is delicious for $2.25. I definitely wanted to get some more! Review for their service: 1 STAR I think the workers could have been a little more mature. I was looking at the pastries and this girl just kept on screaming at me saying, "NEXT". No one was behind me so I told her I was still looking and she kept screaming, "NEXT". Finally when someone did come in I told them I was still deciding and told them to go in front of me so that the girl could stop shouting "NEXT" like a crazy annoying grill sergeant. When I was ready to order I waited at the back of the line and when it was my turn the girl walked away and started giggling with her friends. Even though there was a line behind me she just kept giggling with the two other workers. Finally one of the girls were mature enough and started taking customer's orders....kids these days...
(4)Evelyn L.
Awesome soup & delicious carrot cake with cheese frosting!! What a nice elegant town too! If only I had the stomach to try more!! Definitely recommended for breakfast or an early visit to the town when no other stores are open yet.
(5)Janet P.
This little bakery located on the square in downtown Healdsburg has the best sticky bun I have ever had. It's crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and not too sweet! Definitely worth waiting in line. Will I go back? Most definitely Is it worth a drive? Yes
(5)Tammy T.
Stopped by for brunch because all of the raving reviews and I'm not sure what it's all about. Ordered the quiche with bacon and it was...good. wouldn't quite say great. Boyfriend had the ham croissant sandwich item on their menu and that was as expected. Fair prices and a dog friendly environment was a plus. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things but it was quite average. I did enjoy the lightly dressed salad that came with his croissant though. I might give it another try but I'm not particularly intrigued.
(3)GayFamily V.
Best bakery in all of Sonoma County I always stop when in Healdsburg. The only item that I have tried here that I did not like was the Bread Pudding.

We recently escaped Los Angeles and relocated here, and as good as so many bakeries are in So Cal, none compares to Downtown Creamery here in Sonoma County tucked into our charming Healdsburg plaza square: When I'm away from Healdsburg now, I go crazy without one of their incredible sticky buns. The name doesn't do justice to this delightful pastry since , unlike the standard sticky bun, these are made with a croissant dough and baked to airy and crisp flakiness not generally associated with the standard lead weight sticky bun. If a frosted carb tractor tire is what you're after stick to Cinnabon-ster cause these are not for you. To add to Downtown's sticky bun magic, they're brushed before baking with a sweet glaze that bakes into the dough leaving a gorgeous lightly sweet and even lighter stickiness. It's not the godawful white frosting glaze you usually get on a lead weight. Whatever voodoo love is in their sticky bun results in crispy, light and waaaay too addicting buns from heaven. With a cup of their excellent coffee in the morning, it's the perfect start to the day. They also make sandwiches on they're house made bread , and so far both I've tried have been really good, including the breakfast sandwich of egg, cheese & sausage on an english muffing - made in house of course. EVERYTHING they make is delicious, with stand-outs for me being the sticky buns of course, the galettes - particularly the strawberry rhubarb, and THE ALMOND BARS OH MY GOD. So buttery, chewy, flaky - to die for. Speaking of which, when I die ( and I hope it's with a sticky bun in my mouth) , I want to be buried in a casket made of sticky buns with bouquets of straw-barb galettes and almond bars on top instead of flowers. If you're visiting Healdsburg make sure you don't miss this little gem on the square, but get there early. The locals can clean this place out pretty good! And if you don't make it in early, check in at 4:30 because certain items like bread and a few other baked items go on sale 50% off. Wear your shoulder pads though, because people fight like Forty Niner running backs trying to intercept a football in the SuperBowl - it can be crazy. When you try one of their sticky buns or anything else, you'll understand why.

we've stopped in here a couple times. this past Saturday, it was busy, the line was long as usual. we ordered a breakfast sandwich and also an English muffin with butter and jam. it took forever!! if you want something fast, then go somewhere else! then when we finally got the breakfast sandwich, it turns out they forgot the English muffin and had left it in the toaster to burn! more waiting. and it turns out again, they don't put the butter or jam on for you! food tastes decent

Terrific baked goods with an American flair. Different than the other bakeries and equally good. The sticky buns are a hit. Homemade English muffins and seasonal offerings. Very good. Try the breakfast pizza.

The food here is phenom. We had the breakfast pizza, split a croissant and their sticky buns and I had a breakfast sandwich. All the food was really delicious and filled us up for our wine tasting adventure. But the seating was a little difficult, people would hog up a whole row of tables, so maybe they should consider expansion?? Anyways, very cute and busy place for breakfast, they know how to cook and bake and I will definitely return next time in Healdsburg.

Been going to this place for 10 yrs or so on our annual visits to the wine country. Absolutely to die for pastries - buttery croissants, sticky buns, savory English pasties. Limited breakfast & lunch items...but quality items. E.g. poached eggs on polenta, blackberry pancakes Sandwiches quiches etc. good coffee + espressos. Sometimes a bit crowded.

I've only gotten a few things here but it's always been really good. I love the chai, even though the cup is pretty small.

DT Bakery is a cute coffee shop/bakery on a cute square in one of the cutest towns you'll ever visit. I mean this as a compliment. Healdsburg is the Cali equivalent of a quaint village in Germany or Mexico. If you're in Sonoma or Napa counties, don't miss it. The coffee was great. Here a Starbuck's Red Eye or a Peet's Depth Charge is a Mad Max. It hit the spot as I was at the depths of caffeine withdrawal. Wife loved the pastry. The service was great. Prices were pretty standard for coffee. One draw back: no restroom. I had to sneak into the restaurant next door.

The food at this little bakery is amazing. Unfortunately the service is lousy. The two girls who work here regularly are snippy and rude. Having worked in the service industry most of my life, I expect much better.

Great spot on the main square in Healdsburg. The sticky buns are their bread and butter, and for good reason. Rumor has it that Julia Child used to come by and buy them in the hundreds. The coffee is good as well, and they have great breakfasts, pastries, ice cream, etc. It's all great. One of my favorites is the polenta with spring vegetables and poached egg. Delicious!

Must try sticky buns!!!! Don't leave healdsburg without trying at least one!! Also the savory tart of mushrooms and Swiss chard was yummy in a flaky dough. We are taking some to go to bring back home! It's just that good....

Chilled bread pudding cups = Yummy! Butterfly cookies with jam filling for the wee ones = Yay Brownie with nuts = meh Chocolate cream tart = Yum Any time I am visiting my sister is a time to locate and supply something yummy. She and her hubby work so hard and so often, they hardly have the time to enjoy the simple treasures of the locale. There were two interesting yet organic, bakery places I found on Yelp and this was the closest. The other was a pie shop in Petaluma and because of time constraints, could not be an option on this trip. Cheeseburger pie you will be mine, one day. Healdsburg was a short trip away and the area cute kitschy so I decided on this spot. The bakery is down the street from Powell's candy shop and a decent organic fro-yo cafe. It was a hot afternoon and the heat filled the bakery. We surveyed their offerings and decided on the items listed above. The chilled bread pudding cups are a must for any that like pudding which isn't too sweet and its available at a very attractive price. We enjoyed a few bakery treats in the shop and then heard a whisper from someone behind that said if we'd waited a little while longer we could have scored many of their items at half off! Pricing is reasonable already, we thought. $2.50 for bread pudding and then half off of that; whichever the price is a tasty deal. I'd read reviews before stopping by and may have tried the donuts if any were available. If it weren't so warm a pizza might have been tried as well. Timing is something to consider when visiting a bakery. The offerings and whats available at the time you visit, so calling ahead might be necessary. I look forward to the next visit, if not for treats then for rummy sorbet & a pizza.

When I first walked into this place it didn't seem like they had a wide variety of selection and it didn't look very glamorous. But after I tried their baked goods, I knew I needed to keep coming here. I definitely recommend the sticky buns and apple swirls. They are crisp, sticky, soft, sweet, and tart. Everything you ever want in a sticky bun!! I also love love love the rugelach!! It is a like a short bread cookie wrapped with black currents and it is both buttery and sweet. This is defintely a bakery you want to go to in Healdsburg!

On a hot day, like this past weekend, there was nothing more satisfying than to reach into the refrigerated case and pick out an ice cream sandwich from the Downtown Bakery & Creamery. Coffee ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies. And a free seat on the front bench too! Heavenly...

I hate to admit that I'm basing this review solely on one item. I also hate to admit that I only went here because I happened to see it featured on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate." But when the founder of your favorite cupcake shop (Sprinkles) says she based your favorite cupcake flavor (cinnamon sugar) on this one item, you go! The donut muffins are out of this world stupendous. My husband and I stared at each other in disbelief after each taking a bite. Thank god we got two! I'm not sure we'll be able to try anything else in the bakery when we go back.

Two weeks before the wedding, Maya was super accommodating for taking on the task of making my client's wedding cake. Even though it was just a 6" round, all the other bakeries turned me down. So I am super grateful for Maya having to do this in such short notice. And not only that but the cake, according to my client's was delicious. It was a chocolate hazelnut cake with white buttercream on the outside. I even asked to keep the outside plain to save time, but Maya went ahead and added fillagry and designs to it - which was more than expected. So thank you Maya and Downtown Bakery crew for being super helpful........the next day we went down to her bakery and got home made peach ice cream and Butterscotch pecan ice cream which were absolutely delicious and a prefect treat on a hot, summer day.

They were out of donut muffins when I came in this Saturday around 3pm!! I was very disappointed. We opted for the sticky bun instead, which was also highly recommended, and warmed it up in the toasted oven the next day. The sticky bun ( yelp.com/biz_photos/suMd… ) looked like it would be really good, but it didn't have much flavor. Other sticky buns I've tried in the past usually add a touch of orange zest or something along those lines to brighten the flavor. The sticky bun also wasn't as sticky as I'd like. I wouldn't get this again, but would come back to try the donut muffin! The staff here was really friendly, and you can also purchase a variety of other treats as well as ice cream.

I found this place just by Yelping gluten free near me while I was in healdsburg . I was obviously skeptical about it having gluten free because it was a bakery, and bost mainstream bakeries don't attempt gluten free and regular because of the high probability of cross-contamination. Once inside, the place was packed, which I took as a good sign. As soon as we were at the front I asked if they did in fact have gluten free, and the lady said yes! They had a gluten free french style macaroon in chocolate fudge, a walnut pistachio cookie, a scone of some type, and a chocolate almond flour layer cake. I of course, ordered one of each, to try them all. The macaroon I really wanted to like, but it tasted like it had been in the cooler case too long. The walnut pistachio cookie was EXCELLENT, and the scone was also very good. The cake looked and smelled wonderful, but was very similar in theory to Patisserie Angelica's in Sebastopol, and nobody can beat her gluten free almond layer cake... My dining companion had a coconut creme cupcake (regular), and thought it was wonderful. I'm just thankful they had options for me, and wonderfully, even though they were a regular bakery and still made gluten free items, I didn't get sick from them, so they must really know what they're doing to eliminate cross contamination! Wunderbar!

There is a reason why this place is crowded. Great pastry & coffee. I'd give it 5 stars if there were more seating.

I heard about this bakery on a podcast and when I saw their stand at the Ferry Building, I got one of the donut muffins for my family to try. It was very dry and basic, but I guess what made it "donutty" in their opinion, was that it was rolled in sugar. I don't get the hype over it or why so many people were ordering it when the stand looked to have so many other better choices. (I think this inspired Candace Nelson's cinnamon sugar donut after she mentioned the donut muffin on "Best Thing I Ever Ate"...that's pretty flavorless and plain in my opinion too!)

The sticky buns are the best I have ever had. Breakfast is great but it gets quite warm in there so get there early to avoid the rush if possible. I love grabbing a coffee from Flying Goat which is just a block away and grabbing a pastry on a lazy weekend morning. This is where the locals go - you won't be disappointed!

Fresh (and I do mean FRESH) strawberry sherbet, laden with frozen strawberries, and the galettes... oh my. Strawberry-rhubarb, apple-pear, and apple. They were absolutely delicious and well worth every penny of the $5 each. I will make this a regular stop when I hit Healdsburg. Goodies galore.

Two words: S T I C K Y B U N S. You're welcome.

We ordered a large order of two different kinds of fruit galettes and the classic cheesecake for the dessert bar for our wedding in September 2014. It was AWESOME. What a wonderful little place! ...and very good for large orders! Thank you!!

WOW! We stumbled upon this amazing bakery after much wine drinking and since drinking lowers my will power I decided to try as much as possible. I sampled the unfired donut and the creme scone, both were fantastic and I wanted more. I also took the homemade fig newton home and the English muffins. I have never been to a bakery that had as much variety as this. Everything look so freakin' good. Also, I did not get the cupcakes, but I was told the coconut flavor was awesome! I do not know what is they did to these English muffins but I am crazing more. Oh please get a website so I can order them in bulk!! My only regret is that they are so far away, ugh. Not only does this bakery have a supreme location, but it's not pretentious by any means, and is one of the most memorable bakeries I have been to. I absolutely recommend adding this to your list of places to try when in Healdsburg.

I zeroed in on this place based on the amazing reviews on Yelp. It was a Wednesday morning, and downtown Healdsburg was pretty quiet. Unfortunately, the first thing the cashier said to me was "Breakfast is only served Friday through Sunday." I'm sure their baked items are amazing, but most of the reviews and photos focus on the awesome hot breakfast items. It would've been nice to see that prominently displayed somewhere on the Yelp site! I took my business elsewhere.

Homage to "scratch" baking. A fan of the croissant, English muffin, and any breads. They have a lovely case of specialty cakes and you can buy pastry and cookie dough to take home and bake yourself (nice). Close By 4 on Sunday's so make time to get there.

This place is adorable! I visited here with friends and my husband for a weekend and this was our go to breakfast spot! They have the most amazing pastries and breads as well as an assortment of coffee and tea drinks :) They also have great breakfast items. I wish we were in town longer because i would have tried everything on the menu Their croissants are out of this world delicious. There is tons of parking right out front and the town of healdsburg is super cute. Grab one of their delicos pastries and take a walk to the park or around to the shops! I would totally recommended this place :)
