Had a wonderful dinner last month. The service was excellent, the food was great. My husband is deathly allergic to pine nuts and I especially appreciated the waiters discussion with the cooks to ensure the beef stroganoff he wanted was "safe." Everyone went above and beyond to make our dinner enjoyable.

My wife and I visited Grass Valley, CA for our anniversary. Our initial food experiences at our hotel and elsewhere in town had ranged from outright horrible to passable. All that changed when a local recommended the Owl for dinner, which we visited on a Saturday evening. The atmosphere is cozy and the bar is full service, which helped us kill 25 minutes until the restaurant opened for dinner. We were sat in comfortable and lower back supporting chairs at a cozy table near the open kitchen. While initially worried about the noise level it soon turned out to not be an issue, and the wonderful smells were enticing. We received freshly baked bread as an introduction, and we both selected from daily specials for our entrees. My wife chose the salmon in a white wine and caper sauce with wild rice, and I chose the panko breaded halibut with a Thai basil sauce and garlic mashed potatoes. From the first bite we knew we'd struck culinary gold. Both fish portions were generous and cooked to perfection with no hint of rubbery or dry textures. Both sauces were simply mouth watering, so much so that I asked the owner and lead chef for the recipe for the white wine one, which he actually gave to me and which we've tried to replicate at home, with varying success. Even the wild rice was awesome, which I think is hard to do. Whenever we make it some part of it always seems undercooked while others seem overcooked, and it's always etiher too flavorful or too bland, but the folks at the Owl seem to have it figured out. My only complaint would be that the mashed potatoes had entirely too much garlic in them, about three times what I'm used to in this dish, which threatened to overpower the Thai basil sauce on my palate. I passed this complaint along with all of our compliments - and a healthy tip - to the owner/lead chef. We finished off with a shared piece of chocolate torte which was simply delightful, and which was presented well. The service was fast without being rushed, accurate and quite friendly. Our experience at this restaurant was the first positive one we'd had since arriving in Grass Valley, and it was most welcome!

Had a great meal last time I went. We started with Billy Blue Bread of course. I think I ordered the calamari steak, which was tasty. There is a pretty good wine list with several great local wines.

My husband and I ate here for the first time last night. Our steaks were wonderful - as were the accompanying dishes. The service was attentive and friendly, and Steve the owner stopped by our table to make sure everything was perfect. When he mentioned the berry cobbler dessert was from his mother's recipe, I knew I had to have it, and it was delicious. What a fun night! We'll be back.

This used to be my very favorite place to go. The staff was like family and the food fantastic. Unfortunately all that has changed. The staff is now very poor except for Julie and Josh in the bar. They are all that is left of what was a wonderful environment. The resaurant is under new ownership now. I hope it gets better.

My girlfriend suggested this restaurant when I told her I was hungry for a hamburger. Well, they don't have burgers, but that was ok. I ended up getting a steak with a baked potato and vegetables. Also came with a salad. It was all very good. They seemed to have a nice selection of wines and drinks, but I just had a coke myself. The restaurant itself seemed a little too dark at times. I had to watch my step as I was leaving the place as I was afraid I might trip and fall over something. I came out of there feeling good though and satisfied with the meal. The waiter was also good and seemed to care about making us happy.

I enjoyed my visit to The Owl. I would be a return customer if I lived in the area. I had the Thai Basil Halibut Special that included bread & salad. The seared panko breaded halibut was cooked perfectly. No bells & whistles, just a good food. My server was very helpful and was instrumental in helping me with my food selection. His advice worked out perfectly.

The Best Food In Grass Valley. Since Steve the new owner took over, It's just gotten better! If you like Rack of Lamb, theirs is delicious and very large portion. The Billy Blue Bread is to die for. Great Martini's too.

Hello Billy Blue Bread!!!!!! Seriously the best bread maybe ever. The beef stroganof is delicious. In fact my husband and I can split a plate of that and the bread and each have a dinner salad and call it good. The Owl Taven has been around as long as I can remember and it has always been good upper scale dining.

This is one of our staple date night restaurants, I always get steak just because their steak is how I like it, aged tender and tasty. They are always out of the Beef Stroganoff when we go but one day hope to try it. The cajun chicken pasta, I have heard, is very good. A little pricy, but I am okay with that with the quality of food and good to great service. We saved some money when we did not drink alcohol, but they always seem to have a good beer on tap. If you just go in for dinner, at least go in and look at the antique bar, it is a lovely piece. oh and we have taken our preschooler there, sometimes to the chagrin of the other patrons.....

We came for drinks and were not disappointed. Hubby had a yummy, BIG martini, up, dry and very, very cold! And I was made the house special martini which was yummy...we were looking for some interesting appies, though, but none to be found...

No star for the Owl last Sat. night. We were a party of 12 for a birthday celebration. Clearly the wrong restaurant for such an occasion. They are unable to handle large groups efficiently and I was sorry we choose this place. The owners knew in advance we were coming. They were short staffed, we had slow and poor service and the food was mediocre at best. The music (guitar player) way to loud for the small room. The amplifier was aimed right at our group so no one could hear what anyone was saying. I would recommend this place if you are a party of 2 and have lots of time to burn. All the food tastes about the same, because they use the same sauce for steak/seafood and chicken. Hopefully they will get their act together, because it could be good. Certainly the location is excellent right in the center of historic Grass Valley.

This is an excellent choice for a meal of beef. Be sure to reserve on Friday/Saturday nights. The service is friendly, and the portions are plentiful. They have other menu choices besides beef. Tried the bar on a Friday after work. Just drinking, no food. The service and selection were good. The bar area is small, with a few tables that seat a max of four. Quite satisfactory for a happy hour, unless more than four people show up.

Five stars over and over again. The best steaks in the foothills (north of Angels Camp, anyway). Great ambience, can be a little noisy or warm when busy (which is often...call for reservations on weekends). Friendly staff and consistently-excellent food. Try the Billy Blue Bread...heaven on earth! Parking is usually easy behind the restaurant...definitely worth the drive.

If I could give half stars this would be the time to use it. 3 1/2 stars please. I love the service, hate the leaky roof in winter, love the roasted bell pepper soup, hate the way they drown their excellently cooked steaks in peppercorn sauce, love the steamed veggies that they generously portion all the entrees with but hate how pricey it all is. K, that sums it up for me. It's where we go when we want a warm soup that will fill us up, hot sourdough bread at our table and service with a smile. The meats are done very well too but as a steak house, I think Kane's delivers a little more ambiance and style for the same price.

Went here early on a Friday night. We sat in a booth right near the excellent guitar player and could still hold a conversation. The ribs were great as was the prime rib. We took enough home for lunch the next day. Everyone was friendly, food came quickly, and all the sides were fine. My baked potato was great and so was the clam chowder.

This is by far the best place to get a steak in Grass Valley. The Fillet Mignon is extremely good my wife gets it every-time we go. I get the Fillet or the Rib-eye. You have to get the Billy Blue Bread every-time you go here its like required it so damn good. On top of the good food they know how to make a good stiff drink. What more can you ask for?

We are repeat customers at the Owl. I enjoy the live music, the staff is great, and the food is quite good. (I recommend the ribs.) The atmosphere is not top notch, somewhat backwoods, but that is part of the charm. The full service bar is somewhat interesting, as it dates back to mining days and depending on the night the bartender is either good or great.

Brought friends from San Fran and Chicago. Both loved their meals...and were also sold on the Brussel sprouts. One had chicken marsala and the other salmon. Appreciated that they let us try three different wines before making our decision...and decent size taste as well....enough for all 3 of us to try. I come here a couple times a month and am always treated well. People complain about prices, but they do food to order...nothing comes from a vendor ready for reheating. Food costs are expensive. ...I find their prices within reason.

We decided to come in and check the dinner menu, and let the staff know that we had a service dog and immediately offered to show our tags. Some guy in white rudely questioned us with something like "A service dog? I don't know. I don't know about that. I'll ask." Professional. I understand dogs aren't allowed inside restaurants for health reasons, but they could have nicely let us know. Especially because we would've been happy to discuss sitting outside, but we decided it didn't even look worth it.

We had reservations at 7, left at 9:30. Had extreme problems with service....at one point the chef was bussing tables. They lost my brothers ribs then "refound" them. The only thing good is the billy blue bread . we don't come often, but now never will again. Boo. Bad service bad food. Two stars for the bread but that's about it. Go somewhere else.

It's Wednesday night quiet. We like that. We shared the mahimahi special. The fish had a crunchy crust with a delicious sauce. Excellent. Josh, our server, was attentive and helpful. He provided samples when we were not sure which wine we wanted. His suggestions were spot on. The only downside is the dark interior. Black is their favorite color. Makes one wonder what they are hiding. Darkness aside, we'll return.

Amazing little gem in Grass Valley. City caliber food in the country! It's pricey but worth it. My folks are regulars and it's nice to see them treated that way. They have the same waiter every week and I see why. Taylor is attentive, friendly and accommodating. My moms pretty picky about good service and good food and it's nice to see her treated well. The billy bread is no joke! Garlic and cheese and warm and gooey. The salads are fresh and not over dressed. I got the teriyaki steak medium and it was a little too pink for me. Like mother like daughter, I guess. Taylor was nice enough to throw it back on the fire. Wonderful spot! The serve diet coke too. We had wine but it was nice to see coke products. I can see why my folks don't mind paying that much for dinner once a week. Besides, they deserve it!

We love the Owl..Its a bit pricey so we usually only go there for birthdays. I love the atmosphere..its dimly lit and during the winter they have the fireplace going in the corner. I have yet to eat anything from their menu that isnt good...aside from the sides. The potatoes are good but the veggies could use a lot of help. They seem like the frozen kind...and that's not good for the money spent. EAT THE BILLY BLUE BREAD!!!

I came here tonight with my husband for our anniversary dinner. We had several friends recommend it to us. I really wanted it to be good. We made our reservation via the website for 7:15. It asked if we were celebrating anything and we indicated that we were celebrating our anniversary. We arrived just before our reservation time and checked in with the hostess. The main dining area was not full or busy. The hostess indicated that we were being seated in a booth. We followed her out of the main dining area and into the bar. Then we were seated with a lovely view of the restroom and the waitress station. All of the tables had a lighted candle on them with the exception of the 3 booths. We were then greeted by April who announced she would be our server. April was so loud! She told us about the specials. We placed our order at this time. We ordered the Billy Blue Bread appetizer, my hubby had the ribeye steak with a baked potato, I had the new York with garlic mashed potatoes. We both had salad. I informed April of my shellfish allergy and also told her that we did not want any onions or chives on anything. The appetizer comes out. Looks delicious, but is covered with green onion. We don't say anything, instead we just remove the onions. The bread was good. I could only eat a little because it is super rich, but it is good. A few minutes later, our salads came out. The salad was a bed of mixed greens with room temperature salad dressing. They attempted to make a good salad. The fork was refrigerated but not the plate. Right after April dropped off the salad to us, we heard her tell the cook that we had just gotten our salad so she couldn't give us our steaks yet. We made sure to eat the salad quickly so that our food wasn't going to sit in the kitchen for too long. The steaks were delivered by April. She also brought us steak sauce and then disappeared. My New York strip was super tough. I had a difficult time cutting through it with a steak knife. I literally had to saw a piece off to eat it. My garlic mashed potatoes were not good. They tasted artificial. My husband said that his ribeye was seasoned and cooked well for the most part. He enjoyed his baked potato. They used real butter in top of the potato. The steaks were served with a seasonal vegetable medley with carrots, squash, broccoli, and zucchini. We didn't try the veggies. April never checked in on us to see how our meal was. Actually, no one did. That is a pet peeve of mine. Especially when a restaurant is not busy. So, once my hubby finished his steak, April came over and asked if I wanted a box for the remaining 98% of my meal. I asked for her to just pack up the steak for me. She started to ask if we wanted desert and then remembered that our reservation said we were here for our anniversary. She said that they offer a complimentary chocolate and almond torte desert for birthdays and anniversaries, and asked if we wanted to try it. We said sure. The chocolate torte was brought out on a plain white bread plate. The torte itself had chocolate drizzled with chocolate and was outlined with whipped cream. Presentation could have been so much better. We both tried it. It was awful! It was so heavy and thick. Not at all creamy or enjoyable. It was really dense and hard. April returned with our check and I inquired as to if the cheesecake they offer is actually made on site from scratch. April assured me that it is really delicious, creamy, and made from scratch on site. She then mentioned that ALL of their desert items are made from scratch on site. If the chocolate torte was made on site, it was probably made several weeks ago. I ordered the cheesecake to go. I tried some of the cheesecake and it is creamy and seems to be ok so far. Overall, I think the Owl has some really great potential. One thing that bugged me was that our visit start to finish was less than 55 minutes. When we are going out for a nice dinner, We do not want to be rushed. I don't expect a 11/2 to 2 hour Morton's experience, but I do want to enjoy my time away from the kids. Our meal came out to right around $75 for a small order of Billy bread, 2 steak dinners, a cheesecake, and a beer on tap. I still have not decided if we will give The Owl a second chance. With a few minor tweaks and training, they could make this restaurant one that people would go out of their way for. The Owl is much better than Kane's for sure!

My boyfriend and I had dinner there last night under a friend's recommendation and it was wonderful! Our server was Jessica and she was attentive, but not so much to where I had to stop and talk with my mouth full of food. We started off with the billy blue bread because of my friend's recommendation, and it is fantastic! I can see why she emphasized ordering that. I ordered the Teriyaki Shrimp and my boyfriend ordered the Filet Mignon. The filet was amazing and perfect. I liked the Shrimp, but I didn't know exactly what I was ordering, so when it arrived I was a little disappointed, but it still was quite good. (My fault on not asking further questions on the order). We will be back again for future date nights!

    (1) The Rib Eye stake was tasty but too think for the price. It wasn't as juicy as it should have been. A think Rib Eye just doesn't work. (2) Salmon with piccata sauce was excellent. Cooked perfect and very tasty. (3) Everything is a bit pricy.

OPEN FOR LUNCH! First time here and discovered this was the 1st weekend they're open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays, good timing! We've been looking forward to trying out this place after recommendations from friends. We weren't disappointed. First, a very nice vibe, all the personnel friendly and welcoming, servers, cook, owner, all came over and introduced themselves. We felt like we found home. We had the clam chowder, well balanced, hearty, a perfect comfort food. The renowned Billy Blue Bread lived up to its name, the small order was huge for the two of us. Panko-crusted calamari strips were big with a tomato-ey aioli sauce. Then the brussel sprouts with a LOT of parmesan cheese. Everything house made and perfectly cooked. It was a great lunch and we're looking forward to trying dinner there.

My favorite restaurant in Grass Valley when I visit. I'm from Dallas. Some would call me a borderline Foodie. From their latest Purple Martini cocktail, friendly wait staff, appetizers, entrees and desserts ( The Apple Pie and Ice Cream Pie are cannot miss choices ). Other hints / tips to try: the cheese bread appetizer, Brussel Sprouts as a veggie, their fish specials. Great wine ( including local selections ) and mixed drink selection - iv yet to go wrong on a Martini order ( Green Apple or their newest creation - the Purple Martini ).

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at The Owl last night because I love to order lobster once a year to treat myself...the lobster was perfect, my husband had their pork chop which is also very good...a very nice time, I've always been impressed with The Owl. Their Billy Blue Bread is to die for, u must order for an appetizer!!

Amazing quality food. Friendly, attentive staff. Hands-on owner. This place has such great atmosphere. Every time we go we enjoy the food and the service. Personal favorites are the brussel sprouts, Cajun chicken strips, prawn cocktail, caprese salad, Steaks--oh, who am I kidding--the whole menu is fabulous!

Being from Southern California, we were pleasantly surprised by this gem in Grass Valley. Our server Cayla was most helpful in her suggestions and attentive to our needs. The meal and dessert were delightful and atmosphere pleasant and quiet as the bar is separate the dining room. Would recommend this establishment to .... All!

The owl there staff vary friendly had good Service and the fire place was an cool feature. The plate was kinda boring to look at and the food was just kinda there. Nothing special could of made the same thing at home . It just a little over priced for what you get.

I love the Owl! It's like a little gem hidden in plain sight. Right downtown Grass Valley, if you want to go out for dinner and a movie, this is the place to go. The bar menu is reasonably priced, with great sandwiches and burgers. If you are looking for dinner, steak all the way! Red meat, potatoes, billy blue bread and a martini! Yes, please! They are open for dinner only and have a new happy hour during the weekdays! Shhh, it's a secret! 4-6pm half off all appetizers, Monday-Friday!

I was visiting family in GV and they raved about the great food and service. They were flabbergasted and embarrassed, and felt terrible. Although we were seated immediately, it was a good 10-15 minutes before waitstaff dropped by to tell us the specials and let us know what WASN'T available - namely all the fish dishes and baked potatoes - but what disturbed me most was that the owner of the restaurant, dressed in Chef garb, bussing tables (WTF)... As for the service, the waitress was pleasant, but they must have been short staffed, because drinks were slow to arrive, it was a 1/2 hour before we placed our order, and a small bread basket was also slow to arrive at the table. And it felt like the salads took forever to arrive. Food, first, why is shrimp cocktail good enough for a bar menu but not the dining room?? And they were good size and tasty (so I was told by one of the people at my table). I ordered a 1/2 rack of ribs, they were okay a little too much pepper but okay...Another companion at the table ordered a steak, medium, arrived well done and auv poir...The waitress did apologize and removed it from the bill...the onion soup was served in a bowl vs a crock, not much cheese and the i don't think i saw bread in it?? As we sat at our table waiting for food, observing other patrons, we all noted the same thing, people weren't really enjoying their meals. The group seated behind us (3 had steak, 1 ribs) didn't finish their meals and when asked if they wanted to "box it up" there was a resounding "no"... I understand that the owner hasn't been there long, but I believe he is from the Bay Area, with years of experience. Maybe he needs a visit from Gordon Ramsey to end what appears to be a "kitchen nightmare". On the upside, it does have a decent bar area which was filled and lively. Maybe next time, just cocktails and shrimp at the bar.

We love this place. Great dinner spot with atmosphere and delicious entrees. Steaks always come out right and are good cuts. Price is right too. We drive all the way from Rocklin to Grass Valley just to eat here on occasion. They do things right - mostly. The bar area is very cozy and they often have live guitar music on busy nights.

I'll start out with something positive. They let my friend and I sit there for two hours as we were catching up~ My friend ordered the onion soup and I, the salad. The soup tasted burned. My friend ordered the Mahi Tuna as they were out of Salmon at 6PM. The tuna had an initial taste of sour as in starting to go bad. We had already told the waitress about the soup and she did replace it with a salad. We told the waitress about the Tuna in hopes they wouldn't serve anyone else the dish. She thanked us and brought us the check. I ordered a steak and it was tasty, but nothing like the steak I had a few months ago at Toffanelli's with a crusted Blue Cheese. Live and learn~

New Ownership always has its hiccups. The Owl is no different. I usually go for the calamari sticks and beer. This time we had the Seared Ahi dinner in the bar. It was good, but i really try to look at the big picture. Both tables around us had to send items back. One guy behind me ordered a porterhouse (which should take up the entire plate) and what they brought was about the size of a New York. In a place that calls itself a steakhouse, that is criminal, and the guy was pissed. They didn't offer to bring him another. It was like take it or leave it. I'd love to say my experience was much better, but something has changed and the Owl is more of a Meh now. Will be eating over at the Holbrooke hotel until things iron out here at the Owl. I'll check back in the New Year to give an update.

I have been to the owl tavern many times in the last year I don't know what has happened in the last few months in the past I would have given it 4 stars the owner "T" used to go around and talk to everyone to see how the food was ect.. Fast forward 10 months now "T" sits in the bar and drinks with what looks like our local homeless community meanwhile the food is hardly edible mashed potatoes that have a chemical after taste vegetables that are over cooked and salted and if your real lucky you will get the butt cut of filet minion not what I want in a dinner that cost $115.00!!!! So sad and forget about desert it's gone to shit as well. Hey "T" get off your bar stool and back to the kitchen where you belong

We stayed in Grass Valley for a weekend and I picked this place for my husband's birthday dinner. It's not necessarily a special occasion kind of place, but it turned into one just based on the food, the charm, and the professional service we got. I was a little worried, based on the mixed reviews here, and I'm sorry that some yelpers had such a bad experience. The staff from those visits must have been fired and completely replaced with brand new, experienced and talented people! My husband and I live in the Bay Area, and have dined at Boulevard, Farallon, Rolli Roti, and everything in between, so we have been spoiled by Bay Area cuisine. Well, the Owl was really up to par. It's a fun, vintage place to dine, with an interesting history. The menu has lots to choose from, and the entrees come with a first course and choice of sides, and all are reasonably priced. We were encouraged to try the Billy Blue bread, and it was delicious: deluxe garlic bread with blue cheese and spices broiled on top. My husband's filet mignon was perfectly grilled and my halibut was moist and flaky, although the panko crust was oversalted. Dessert was nothing to die for, but a nice way to end the meal. Our server, Nicole, would be very much at home at a 4-star restaurant. She was professional, courteous, sharp and attentive without being obtrusive. She knew the menu, and got our order exactly right, and it came out promptly. We enjoyed sitting in a shiny red, tufted booth, that curved around us. Fellow diners were friendly, too, as everyone in Grass Valley seems to be. You should go here!

This place has great original atmosphere, wonderful service, nice beer and wine selection with a full bar, but the food is not even close to the price they are charging. If you have money to burn this is the place for you. It is a shame, as it has many characteristics of a great restaurant, however their prices do not reflect the quality of food you will be served.

The Owl has great food and delicious lemon drops! The decor here reminds me of something you would see in your mother's own home....comfy, relaxed and nice. If you're going to order an app you have to try the Blue Bread.

Service by Trevor was very nice. Steaks were only OK, hubby had the larger filet mignon which was the tail piece, very disappointing, overcooked and not good especially for the price. I had the Rib Eye about 2/3 were edible the rest was fat. The citrus salad was a very good, the Caesar only OK, excellent baked potato, mediocre vegetable medley. Wine list was decent and fairly priced. I did have a much nicer experience here, about a year ago, same owner, but this time it just seemed a bit average for the above average price. Not top on my return list soon.

We were celebrating my friends 85th birthday. I let our server know that. Two of our group had steaks and two had the prime rib. I had the ribs. Their steaks and prime rib were very good. I ordered the ribs and mashed potatoes. The ribs were just OK but not great, the potatoes, mediocre. The server acknowledged my friends birthday by just putting down a piece of pie in front of him and walking off. If you want to celebrate a birthday, I suggest you go to the Willo where they really know how to treat a customer. Don't go here on a Friday, parking is almost impossible.

One of the single worst dinners we have ever had. Came in early (6:15) to beat a large party set for 6:45. We ordered the prime rib (end cut for me....rare for my wife). The meat was: 1. Unseasoned (I mean totally...no rub, no S&P....nothing) 2. TOUGH. How do you get tough prime rib...when it's rare???? 3. Presented with a mess of 'seasonal' (if it were summer) vegs. that were mushy and likely frozen. 4. With a lackluster baker (with a small glob of sour cream and chives on the side) Now, to the restaurant and our server's credit, they did take on dinner off the bill and gave us a discount off the balance of the meal. Nice touch. BUT...with the kitchen clowning around (yelling like they were firing burgers in a diner), it's pretty apparent there needs to be a change in the kitchen. The "chef" seemed shocked when we approached him and advised him to taste his food... Wish this place had stayed the dive bar it had been.

Four of us went for dinner last night. We were told the steaks were great and I am reluctant to order steak out because my husband cooks the best!! However, I tried the ribeye. Very disappointed because it was so thin and overcooked. My husband's was just as thin but was cooked to his liking. When I order a medium-rare steak I expect red juices flowing, but not in this case. My potato and veggies were tepid and my husband's rice pilaf looked mushy. This was not worth the $26. On the other hand, our companions enjoyed their pork chop and lamb. The gazpacho and clam chowder were good. The bread was a plain loaf of white bread. The service was adequate; however, had to remind him about the seltzer water and tabasco. My husband and I decided that we would not try this place again since there are so many other places to go back to or try. For the $$, not worth it.

They don't answer their phone! Wanted to place an order for pick up we called 20 times they either did not answer the phone or we got a busy signal. It's a shame. I was really looking forward to trying their steak.

Excellent booths with perfect table distance. Service was very professional and could not have been better. Very cozy for an extended evening dining experience while visiting with friends. Did have a couple of problems. The calamari listed on the internet menu is no longer offered as a main course. The salmon was good but not great. My baked potato was only a little warm and tough. It was immediately replaced but should have not left the kitchen this way. Caesar salad was very good. Can do better for the price.

I don't know why this restaurant doesn't have 5 stars. This is as good as it gets in Grass Valley! Their salmon dinner is KILLER. They have the sweetest staff (and long lasting, low turn around-- good management!?). Since the new owner took over, the menu has been revamped to include Ahi and healthier options including seasonal salads. This is absolutely a tavern/grill/saloon and it pretends to be nothing else. When you're visiting a historical town. why not stop in for a bite at an original saloon. The owner is usually at the front seating his customers, the best host around. I recommend this restaurant to all of my customers! Great people, delicious food, and a long-standing tradition in Nevada County.

Absolutely GREAT. We stayed in Grass Valley using a Living Social internet offer and chose the OWL from the 5 choices available.....boy ! Did we ever make the right choice!! Food was delicious, service great, waiter JOSH was very friendly and courteous and professional. He made us feel like family. Made for the perfect ending to a perfect day. Try the clam chowder....I've not had better. A great find for such a small town. I must sound like I'm related .......not !!!! Just wanted to give them the accolades they earned.

Talk about a love/ hate relationship. Every experience to this place is a roller-coaster of emotions, Six Flags Magic Mountain Style. Keep in mind although they kept in on the down-low, they have changed owners, and this aint your momma's Owl anymore. Yelp isn't the place for a big historical dissertation on the Owl tavern. I got to keep it brief and where it's at today. Simply put: It's past it's heyday of quality and pride it was a decade or more ago. It's a tavern- steakhouse, right smack dab in downtown Grass Valley on Main street in one of the most historical and aesthetically picturesque areas of all the Gold Country. No Doubt about it. THE GOOD: They still got the dibs on properly preparing delectable char-grilled retail beef cuts, and USDA prime's at that. They have an open kitchen, that's quite cool. Not Ruth's Criss by any means, but they got skills back there on the broiler and they care. Brown sauces are good, could even be real demi-glaces! THE BAD: The emotional roller coaster of dealing and interacting with the front house staff! SNOOTY. CORRECTING. ARGUMENTATIVE. OMG people, really? This involves the shoddy service staff (complete with nose rings, snotty demeanor and kinds of offensive shit, like in-your-face-tattoos and interrupting/ correcting me while I am discussing the menu with my dinner associate; ignorance to properly enunciating the dinner specials ("lemon caper beer blanca, [like Blanca from Street Fighter...WHERE'S CHUN-LI?} argulalali {arugula} salad with 'some kind of lemon vinaigrette' .... what ...are you kidding me?) go get a job at a record store if there still are any anymore -and sport your tongue bar there. THE UGLY: Shitty service. The few ruin it for the rest. Sorry team. Weed out the rude ones. BOTTOM LINE: Bar is separate, and I have had fun there. Cool spot, building goes back to about 1868, and reeks of Gold Country charm and antiquity. New Owners make me suspicious, they seem to have raised prices and cut quality. Fri/sat/ night you should be safe. Go for the steaks and the overall experience around town, hopefully a movie or a bar hop to defray from the ups and downs this place may produce.

I drove 4 hours to get here to attend a funeral. I just wanted a good steak and watch some Giants Baseball on TV. The front desk at the Best Western recommended The Owl Grill and Saloon to us and gave us directions to get there. The great looking bar tender was attentive, friendly and talkative. The other patrons joined in and we talked about this, that and every thing else. When we said we were ready for dinner, the owner came and offered us all of the options. Eat at the bar or a table in the bar or a table in the dining room. We chose a table in the bar. The bar tender ran her tail off to make sure we were satisfied. We both ordered the Filet Mignon in a Bleu Cheese sauce. The owner came over to talk to us and we found out that he used to own a restaurant on Murphy Street in Sunnyvale which is only a couple of miles from our house. The food was outstanding, the drinks were outstanding, the bar tender is a doll and the owner is very personable. I would go back here any time.

I used to go here often over the years, but for whatever reason I haven't been for about 3 years. I don't know if they have new ownership recently, but a recent meal there was horrible. I ordered a rib eye steak. I ordered it rare...and confirmed with the waiter what their definition of rare was. Well, when the steak came it was not what I was expecting. 1) it was about 1/2 thick 2) It was BARELY medium rare. I'm guessing because the thinness of the steak combined with the hot grill...it would be very difficult to cook the steak rare if you were distracted for a few seconds. It kinda reminded me of carne asada. Also, instead of potatoes, I ordered fresh fruit. FRESH fruit does not include canned mandarin oranges. In addition, this being July, I would expect a fresh fruit salad to contain more than apples, grapes, and canned oranges. Anyway...not a good experience and I don't see myself going back anytime soon. Funny thing is, before I ordered I said to myself that I was taking a chance because I usually have the best success BBQing my own Costco steaks at home. Oh well....

The Filet Mignon is the best I've had. And I'm normally not a fan of Brussle Sprouts, but wow they do an amazing job with those. For desert I had their apple pie I'm told is an old family recipe from the owner. It was pretty awesome. On top of everything the service was prompt and friendly as well.

I feel sorry for the people who had an obvious bad experience here. After 17 years in the hotel/restaurant industry I can say all restaurants have an off night, and you probably hit the owl on their off night. Tonight was wonderful, the food was great, service was impeccable and company was perfect. Ambiance is a little dated, but that gave the place charm. I recommend seeing for your self the quality of the restaurant before avoiding the owl based on bad yelp reviews.

The owl has gone way downhill lately. They seem to adhere to the belief that if you overcharge for something, people will say it's good rather than admit they've wasted their money on mediocre fare. But then, some people might like heavy, somewhat oily meals. They must spend a lot on "to go" boxes, because I didn't see many people finishing their meals.

We have been dining at the Owl for the past 5 years. The quality has been consistent and so has the service, even after it changed hands. This is comfort food in my opinion: rich food, large portions. You won't leave hungry. Try the Brussel sprouts appetizer!

HORRIBLE! Used to go here all the time... Not anymore. My onion soup came in a large bowl with two small slices of bread and shredded cheese sprinkle on top. Since the server never came back,I ate it. The new owner came by and asked how everything was. I told him that onion soup is never served that way, and his reply was, I could get you something else. Really?!?! My son and husband's steaks were overcooked (they ordered rare) and tasted horrible. Mashed potatoes were cold and nasty! Never going back!! Too bad, as we had been customers for over 20 years... :/

The food was good. But the service was horrible. It took well over an hour and a half to order and get or food. If we were not invited out to dinner we would of walked out. For the prices they charge the service should never be like that. I will never eat their again.

My wife and I had dinner at the Owl last Friday night. When we entered we could hear live music in the bar and it was great. We stopped and had a cocktail before dinner and the bartender gave us great service, great drink and even a smile. After enjoying our drink and the music we headed into dinner in the dining room where we were greeted by the chef who sat us. I thought this was a little odd at first but once I realized that he was not only the chef but also the owner it made sense. The service was also excellent. Great sever and again a smile. This is important to me because it makes you feel like they are happy you are there. I am a critic because I to own a restaurant and I look at every detail like a contractor when he enters a home. He looks for the details. The salt a pepper shakers were clean, the carpet was clean and free of debris. Should I go on? I am critical of restaurants and this is the best one I have been to since I moved to the area 3 years ago. I will definitely go back and have already started recommending it to my friends.

Had reservations for 7:00. Waited in very cold hall for 45 minutes. They didn't offer us a drink or snack while we waited. The wait staff seemed in a hurry to go home. Ordered prime rib.......20 minutes later was told they were out! I ordered a rib eye with their famous clam chowder. It turned out to taste like Costco's with filler added. I got my steak, but it was NOT a rib eye...not sure was you would call it. My steak had no flavor & tough, even thou I ordered it rare. On person in our party had birthday. I told the manager or owner that I would like some birthday desert. Nothing!!! I surely would not recommended this place. It is highly over rated & priced. It is more like Denny's quality. A very pleasant surprise! I had been here before and just sat in the bar, not realizing it was a really good restaurant. The service was absolutely great. There were 8 in our group, no reservation, it was a busy night (Farmer's Market) and they totally accommodated us. Our server went out of her way for us and was just really nice. For food, our friends said we had to get the Billy Blue Bread, which is this garlicky-blue cheese bread. The menu said it was "addicting" and it was! Very rich though. We also shared the filet, which was cooked perfect. The Owl was great! Check it out!

Our waiter, Josh, did an amazing job extolling the menu and features of the various dishes. His patience and expertise are an example to others in the field. Knowledge of the menu, hints as to flavors and taste, selling his product well. We both had the filet mignon. My wife had the french onion soup: excellent. I had a Caesar salad: Just right. Fresh crusty and warm bread accompanied the starters. Nice! The only aspect not earning the Owl five stars here was the cooking of the meat itself. I ordered clearly well done, yet my cut was not only pink inside, but showing red in parts, which I find rather unappetizing. Some folks prefer that, this paying customer does not. Still: A classy joint, clean, tastefully decorated. Should we ever be in the area again, worthy of another visit.

Awesome Old timey bar restaurant decor. The only thing about it i didnt like was the weird lights at the tables, kinda made me feel like I was under interrogation it was like a spot light in your face but other than that the place was great. And yes the Billy blue bread is delicious

Pretty good I'd say. We were sat immediately even though we were 15 minutes early for our reservation. The atmosphere is nice, not loud but not quiet, low lighting but not so low that you can't read your menu, and very friendly service. Our waitress was over immediately and took our drink orders, which is something I really appreciate in a good restaurant, since you will get your drinks by the time they come back to take your order. The menu is not huge but they have a great selection. First thing at the top of the menu is the prime rib, which is what all 4 of us ordered (not planned, lol). I must say the prime rib was cooked to perfection. 2 of us ordered the garlic mash and the other 2 got the baked potato. The garlic mash was ok. It tasted good but it was exactly that and nothing more, garlic and mashed potatoes that were completely smooth. They almost looked like they were "just add milk" powered potatoes but I'm pretty sure they weren't. I expected a little lumpiness with some color, like skin, green onion, or fresh grated parsley. The zucchini was good as well but they give you a very small amount. There was one order mess up, they brought my husband out garlic mash when he ordered a baked potato but they corrected it instantaneously. One thing I really liked was that you are not rushed; many places now try to get you in and out to turn the table over to another party. This is not the case here. An observation would be that they waiters/waitresses are very quick but almost too quick. After our dinner was served, we were never asked if we needed anything more to drink. It was my mother's birthday and I think she wanted another glass of wine but didn't say anything or try and flag our server down, I too wanted another cocktail but didn't care enough to try and get someone. Other than that, it's one of the best restaurants we've been too in Grass Valley and intend to go again. Cheers!

We had a large (15) family birthday dinner a few weeks ago and none of us will ever go back. The food was excellent but the servers and the owner/manager were so rude it completely tainted our experience. I actually went up to the owner/manager to politely discuss how disappointed we were and he was again completely rude and took no accountability for his or his staff's demeanor. Go elsewhere!

I was all excited over the reviews. I walked from the hotel to this place and sat at the bar, grabbed the menu and decided on a nice prime rib dinner. Well after 10 minuets of waiting at the bar the bartender came by and said it was to late to order dinner. It was 8:30 and I had been waiting for him. The restaurant closes at 9pm but don't be fooled by the sign they stop serving at 8:30 and he refused to take my order. What an a$$#0!3. Besides they don't have any IPA at this place. Crappy beer selections, all light flavorless beer. It's not often I give a one star but when it's just past 8:30 and the sign says you are open until 9 pm you can go F your self. I walked down to the thai place that says open till 9pm and served me some great food. One pissed off customer that will tell everyone to go some place else.

I love The Owl. It has a great gold miner energy with exposed brick walls and a great fireplace. The adjoining bar serves great drinks. Make reservations early and request the fireside table, if you are a party of two. We were told that people reserve this table a year in advance for Valentine's Day and Anniversaries. If the fire gets warm, they will turn it down. While many places treat veggies as an afterthought (Read: flavorless) The Owl has the best veggies in town. Halibut with Thai Basil Sauce is to die for and if you can afford the calories, The Billy Bread is a must. Last time we ate there, my husband ordered Ribs. Huge portion alert! We had enough ribs left over for lunch for both of us the next day. Go. You won't be disappointed.

Had dinner for the first time at the Owl after living here for 3 years. At the time we were to be served our dinner, the waiter advised that 2 of the dinners had been dropped on the floor. We waited an additional 20 min to be served, you can imagine that the other two being kept warm under the heat lamp were less than enjoyable. It seems to me that an adjustment, a drink, a dessert should have been offered but the waiter did absolutely nothing! Shame on him! After 40 years in the same business, some people don't learn anything! I will never be back! Hello owner, maybe that's why there were only 4 tables in the dining room occupied!

Came to GV on family biz and treated ourselves to the Owl for the first time in years. I had the ribeye and she had the rack of lamb and both were great- tender, done perfectly and yummy gravy. It was early and the bartender was our server and it was refreshing to see the busser and he take their jobs seriously with pride. Service was attentive, fast and professional which made the whole dining experience an enjoyable time. We heard the new owner hasnt taken over yet and the chef and staff will remain with minor changes. If it isnt broken, please dont fix it!

This is my wife and I's favorite place to sneak off to. We have eaten in the restaurant, and it is a great experience- I remember watching flames flare up from the sautee line, as part of the kitchen line is right there in the open. I enjoyed the lamb, and I loved the presentation of it. I think my wife had a macadamia nut crusted ono, or something like that. But that was years ago. In more recent times, our favorite thing to do is sit in the bar, order billy blue bread, calamari, and a burger, then share it all. We never finish everything, but always have a great time. In fact, I think that time eating in their dining room was for an anniversary, and I believe two other anniversaries we have had, we could think of no place we would better enjoy ourselves than sitting at one of the bar tables. Here, we are always well taken care of, and the food is something to crave. The drinks are right on the money (my wife likes the dirty martinis) and they have a well rounded beer and wine selection.

I got a whole month's worth of salt and dried herb intake in just one meal! I would not recommend this place. In fact if you find yourself hungry in Grass Valley, my recommendation is to keep driving 10 minutes to Nevada City and go to the South Pine Cafe. I had the ribeye with rice pilaf, the ribeye was extremely salty, which had the benefit of muting the bad dried herb taste of the rice pilaf. The meat had a good texture but couldn't taste anything but salt. Husband had a decent prime rib and unremarkable garlic mashed potatoes. The creme brulee was inexplicably served in a soup tureen, taste also unremarkable with no vanilla bean. The red wine was at least 85 degrees, I know it's supposed to be "room temperature" but that's ridiculous. We did not try the famous blue cheese bread so cannot comment. Service was adequate but nothing to write home about. Actually I feel bad for the waiter to have to serve such terrible food.

I just had the owl tonight. I've been a regular customer and coming for years. I live in Sacramento and drive over an hour just to eat here! The food is incredibly delicious! Their clam chowder is the best I've had and their filet mignon is so tender and amazing. Not to mention, their veggies and garlic mashed potatoes are just as great! My boyfriend ordered The halibut tonight and it was very flavorful. Loved the taste. Our server was Hannah - exceptional service! She provided the best service since we've been going there. Very friendly, smiley and periodically checking to make sure we were doing ok. The last time I came I ordered the lobster tail. It was tasty and not pricey to me. I'm a steak and lobster kinda gal and when I've gone to other restaurants like Morton's, $100+ for lobster is not worth it! When I ordered it last time it was $45 and a big tail! Definitely got my moneys worth. It cost a little more today and that may be due to the market which I can't blame. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Well, when I made reservations I had requested a booth. When we got there, we were told no booths were available. However, when I went to the ladies room, I noticed there were two empty booths. I was a bit disappointed that the new owner told us they weren't available when clearly they were, especially when I requested for one when I made reservations. I sat near the front door so I watched the owner sit down two other couples in the booths. It just made me question why he told us nothing was available. Nonetheless, I would still return because of Hannah's service and the food. Good job chefs and Hannah!

I was pleasantly surprised by The Owl. It's been years since I have been here... so long that I don't even remember because I was a toddler. This establishment has been around forever which means it's good! A group of friends and I made reservations for a Saturday night. We were seated right away. The drinks came along with our appetizer, the billy blue bread! This stuff is addicting and delicious! Cheesy with the right amount of bite from the blue cheese. (drooling just thinking about it!) Also had a cup of their clam chowder which is also to die for. It's different then any kind I have ever tried. It had a little spice. Loved! I had the special of the night which was mahi mahi with wasabi mashed potatoes and an assortment of veggies. The portions were really big for the price. Erica R. had the calamari steak. She asked our server for a steak knife because it was a little rubbery/tough and the waitress gave her a weird look... but brought out one anyway. Then returned a few minutes later to tell us that she wasn't going to charge us for Erica R's dish because calamari should never be tough and gave us her apologies from the chef. We were really surprised.. and we never complained at all. Erica actually enjoyed her meal very much and would have paid for it glady. We were happy that they were so honest with us and now we know how calamari should be. The combination of good food, great service, and history makes for a place that i will be going time and time again and probably even in another 20 years.
