Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Really good for people who attend FSU and need a bite to eat. Yes there are several places on Shaw, but this is tasty and not too expensive. They make great tacos, and I'm in love with their tortas. Their "salsa" bar is great, because you can take what you'd like. Also, they put chilli powder and lime in your beer!

The service sucks! That's what stood out from my visit to this restaurant. The workers weren't very friendly and the server didn't acknowledge the two times I said "thank you". The chips were out of a bag and weren't good. Chips were not free. The carne asada in the big burrito was salty. The horchata was your typical mix, but very sweet. I asked for guacamole on the side and didn't receive it at all. The restaurant itself is nice, clean and plenty of seats available.

Just as good as the original, but in a somewhat harder to find spot. It is located behind the Deli Delicious across from Fresno State, before someone told me it was there, I had no idea there were any businesses back there! As always the al pastor burrito was delicious, as was the caritas taco. I love the salsas that they have available, they are always a good addition to the food. The service, much like the other location, is quick and relatively friendly. The crowd here is much younger than the other location, and friendlier. I have seen some people at the other location that will flat out stare you down, which can make for an uncomfortable dining experience.

I have great expectations when purchasing Mexican food being Mexican my self so when I Yelp'ed for tacos in my area I expected Taco Bell to show up. But to my surprise Don Pepe showed up so I had to try. My order was to go so I started by ordering a few tacos of various meats (they ask you if you want beans on the taco I said no) I ordered Tripas, lengua, asada, I also ordered a shrimp/octopus cocktail, tostada de ceviche and an enchilada plate, oh and the super nachos (yes all that just to try the place out) let me start off by saying the total price for all that was a bit too much for me but the tacos where HUGE and Filled with lots of meat and delicious, you pick your own toppings at the salsa bar. The enchilada plate was good, what surprised me was that the enchiladas where authentic and not made in a casserole and made with authentic cheese, one thing I didn't expect was the big chunks of chicken on top, not that it wasn't delish just different. The nachos where great and loaded with toppings! The tostada de caviche was Really good and I can tell it was made the authentic way where the fish is cooked in lime juice we where pretty stuffed at this point, I didn't get to the cocktail until the next day which was just as great with big shrimps and big chunks of octopus just the way I like it. Over all we where very pleased by the food and how authentic everything tasted the price was a bit too much but you get what you pay for and this place definitely passed in my book!
(5)Crystal A.
This Mexican restaurant is actually very good. Most places do not have good rice, but I have to dammit the rice here was good. The enchiladas and burritos are good as well. They have a variety of salsas to choose from and the atmosphere is nice. I will definitely keep going back!
(4)Sarah H.
One of the best places in town for tortas! Lengua or al pastor - both very tasty. Torta pan/bread is soft, queso yum, healthy portion of avocado and fixins. Tacos are hearty and delicious as well, beans compliment the meat to ensure two will fill you right up! Oh - chile bar to die for. LOVE the bright red (super spicy) chile. I am always tempted to steal some to take home :)
(5)Peter C.
Holy moly. Got the lengua burrito and it's the best one I've had in Fresno. The meat was so tender that I dream about it on occasion. Maybe a tad more expensive than other similar places but well worth it. Will be going back soon.
(5)Brianna B.
Great place!! Just tried it for the first time! So good...great prices and you get a huge amount of food!!! I'll definitely continue to eat here!!
(5)Kayci H.
One of my favorite places near my house, and I always come for Shrimp Tostada's or Spicy Shrimp Burrito. Nice peeps
(5)Adam N.
Being from LA and having lived almost exclusively in Latino neighborhoods, I know authentic. This place does a good job. The key to Mex is to have it stripped down. I had the basic carnitas burrito with beans and salsa. I then tasted the salsa bar salsas: habanero, tomatillo, and pico de Gallo. All were fresh, and delicious. Traditionally pork and green salsas go great. This was the case. Chips are not included, but they give you a big basket for a buck..
(4)Ryne S.
If I could give this place 500 stars, I would. Don Pepe's is my most favorite taqueria in all of Fresno. Nobody does a better al pastor than they do. Nobody. The tacos typically come with the meat of your choice and boiled pinto beans and that 's all, the torta is hollowed and packed to the gills, but the super burrito is where it's at with all the fixings and it doesn't feel like you're stuffing your body with greasy unhealthy garbage! My most favorite part about Don Pepe's is the salsa bar! After ordering, I'll go and get 3 cupfuls of the pico de gallo and one more cup of just onions, cilantro and lime. I'll take it to my table and eat a cup of the salsa while I wait for my food, it's that good that you don't need tortilla chips. I was highly skeptical of this place a year or two ago when my friend dragged me over with his selling point confident that if I didn't like my food, he would pay for it out of his pocket. Lucky for him, he kept that spare change in his pocket and I'm still coming here.
(5)Maribel M.
While a student at Fresno State I seriously ate at this location about three times a week. This place is fast, clean, and has great service. I usually chose a torta or tacos for a quick lunch. They have a salsa bar where you can add onions, chili, etc. Whenever I go with a bigger appetite I get the chicken sopes meal. They are loaded with chicken, avocado, beans, and veggies. Their jamaica drink is also great with any meal.
(4)Mandy Z.
Torta was amazing! The asada taco was good but def filled with lots of meat and beans. Spent about $8 with a drink which wasn't bad. Maybe my second fav Mexican place in Fresno now? We'll see how the other menu items work out...
(5)Philip N.
It's just...alright. This isn't necessarily an elitist burrito attitude, but I'm sure it'll come off that way. But I'm not trying to be snobby when I say their food is just "ok." Personally, I'm of the belief that tortillas should be chewier. That flavor is okay but the entire burrito just tastes a little dry. Texture and consistency are important for burritos. Also, I know their burritos are probably a healthy serving size, but I'm a bit of a traditionalist. I want my burritos so big that you're pushing away the chips at the end of your meal and yelling, "Get that away from me dude." The burrito is a little dinky. Oh, and I've got a thing about charging for chips. You just don't do that. C'mon man, free chips should be a given at this point.
(2)David G.
I ordered the Super Burrito with pork, and I really enjoyed it. The flavor of the burrito is exceptional--authentic and distinct. This place is very generous with their portions. The staff was friendly and efficient. I'm a big fan of clean restaurants and this place did no disappoint. This was a quality first visit. I will be back.
(4)Amanda C.
Went there yesterday for the first time. I couldn't believe it was only $6 super burritos are filled with everything and a good amount of meat! In sf, a burrito at my favorite place will run you $8+. We got two super burritos, asada and carnitas, both were excellent. The meat was spot on and the tortilla is warmed on their griddle not with a steamer which added taste and a little texture! Their chips are also really good, not salty at all. And we got a large horchata, it was also really cheap considering it was 32oz. It was yummy too, not too sweet and definitely had a good cinnamon/rice taste. Many people were getting shrimp tacos as well as nachos. They looked really good too. Oh, they have a great salsa bar (~12 things you can add to your yummy goodness food). Their chunky salsa is really tasty and goes well with chips. Spicy one is good too. And they even have chopped onions and cilantro. Parking was available in back but theres street parking too. We ordered our food to go since it was pretty busy, but the service seemed good. The person at the register was nice too.
(4)Nhia T.
They have the best beef burrito. Everything is made when you order it. All the ingredients are real. The rice is off from the cooker, the beans are not the powdered ones you get at Tacobell, and the meat is really meat. All the ingredients get wrapped into two large flour tortillas and served in minutes. I usually get their salsa from the side but it is nothing amazing. The fresh food from this place is what makes me wanna go back.
(5)Michelle S.
The best tacos I have had in a long time. Both the spicy fish and tongue were incredible, and the price is hard to beat. A bright spot in Fresno.
(5)M S.
It pains me to have to be the one bad 2-star review, but there's no way around it: this place has *terrible* al pastor burritos. I honestly can't think of anything good to say about them except that they're large. The big hunks of moist and flavourful meat I love in an al pastor were nowhere to be found here. Instead, its filled with crunchy little bits o' meat and fat that just do not taste good. Bland rice and beans take up the rest of the space, with a little bit of guacamole in between (how sad not to see fresh sliced avocado). The actual establishment is really nice and clean though. Its in a new-ish building, and has both indoor and outdoor patio seating. They have Jarritos but no mexican Cokes. No Coke at all actually, only Pepsi. If you're craving an al pastor burrito fix, this is not the taqueria you are looking for. Alas, I don't think I'll be back.
(2)Samantha H.
Don Pepe's spicy shrimp burritos are the best. Number one thing to order. Unfortunately, the carne asada and all else I have tried there are not as tasty. They put too many beans. But from my experiences are both don pepe's this place gives more shrimp. Which makes me VERY happy. Good distribution of the good stuff. L-O-V-E it
(4)Walter S.
Visiting Fresno for early Christmas with my Family. Wanted authentic carne asada tacos for Saturday breakfast like we have when we're at home. Tacos were filled with meat and very good sized for the money. Coronas and Negra Modelo were both served with salt, lime, Tapatio, and a shrimp. Very nice touch. We'll go there every time I go to see my Mom.
(4)Paul M.
Awesome spicy shrimp tacos! Love the mexican beers 'with the works'! Nice outside seating.
(4)Juan E.
I am Mexican, I know Mexican food. This is the best taco shop in Fresno, Period! Not sure what that ignorant review was at the begining about the space or cramped, hey goober this is about the food. Ya so it's small, ya it can get busy, but hey when you're the best, that's what happens, right? Great tacos at a great price and the location is cozy and clean. Love thier micholadas with dos equis. Great seafood and great seafood cocktails. Go you will not be disappointed.
(5)Bruce H.
They changed their menu, as well as raised their prices in the last 6 months. Still friendly service and great food, i would recommend!
(4)Roy K.
Just went there. Had the super burrito with Chile verde, not too bad. Tasty and filling. Funny thing is that we had ordered 2 of the same burrito and the sizes were not consistent. Mine was huge and my buddy's was smaller. We joked around saying, i bet it was based off of your weight, what size super burrito you get. I don't know but i think i like the other one better. (Blackstone and Griffith) The new location is just as small but has a nice patio. This location gets packed quick just like the other one, so get there early if you are going for lunch.
(3)Trevor D.
Spicy shrimp tacos are the thing that almost everyone in our group got, here. They were delicious! The service was super fast, probably partially because we came in on a weekend in summer... when school wasn't in session. Regardless, we had our food practically before we sat down. Good for lunch!
(4)Foodfanatic W.
Best tacos/mexican.All the mexican restaurants I've tried in Fresno can't even come close. Reminds me of mexico without the aftermath. My favorite item for now are the spicy fish tacos. They give you a good amount, tastes super fresh, and they are not fried or greasy! Cant beat the price either! I'm so jealous of those college students.
(5)A. L.
Spicy shrimp tacos.
(5)Joshua A.
I love this place. Being a student at State, it is nice to have a nice little mexican restaurant right across the street. Everything there is great, but I recommend the spicy shrimp taco.
(5)Win D.
So far this is the one place in town that makes a burrito to my liking. I love the fact that the beef isn't overly dried or very fatty. Same goes for the beef tongue. There's always fresh garnishing and hot sauce, pricing seems to be fair considering what you are ordering, and from my experience I've always had friendly service.
(4)LD P.
I like their new location better than the one on Blackstone, however, the new location is A LOT smaller and cramped up than the old one. I've gone here many times, and every time I leave I think, "Eh, the carne asada tacos weren't that great, but at least I'm full" So there it is. If you want quick HUGE tacos, go here. But I have to say, I've tasted better tacos. Their normal tacos are about 2 something. Real cheap. The carne asada meat can be real dry and bland, so you have to put a lot of hot sauce to make up for it. They serve their regular tacos with just whatever meat you choose, and beans, There's a spot where you get all your condiments (cilantro, jalepenos, hot sauce, etc) to put on your tacos. THis is why they serve there tacos so quick. You order at the cashier's desk, but they serve your food to you. So I guess their service is good. =) I recently tried their shrimp tacos since i was really tired of their carne asada. Wow, those were good. No wonder they cost more. lol Note: to JUAN saying i was a goober for stating that the place is cramped: some people would like to know things like this. A review is about the overall place. not only their food. Wise-guy. smh. But any who, i would still recommend this place.
(3)Tom P.
Being a Fresno State student it is nice to have this little taco joint so close. Spicy shrimp burrito is great! Pretty much all their sea food is good. Carnitas are solid. The tortas are great too! Solid beers. Great Salsas! Love it! For not being totally authentic, home cooking, or a taco truck it's GREAT! Nicely priced too. One of the better places to get mexican food.
(5)Pedro F.
spicy shrimp burrito or the occasional carne asada torta with a cup of horchata thats whats for lunch!
(4)Tiff A.
I think the food here is OK overall. I appreciate it because it's not as greasy like all the Mexican restaurants I've been to in town. The salsa and side garments are always fresh. You get nice big portions for its price. Friendly service from the staff and the restaurant itself is always clean and tidy.
(2)Thomas G.
Just opened this second location in July 2008. On Woodrow, just 100 feet south of Shaw, a bit tucked away. Across the street from Fresno State/Save Mart Center. Bright and clean inside with a nice little patio. Small classic signboard menu. Everything is done well. Salsa bar too. I've had quite a few things on the menu. The carnitas and lengua were both excellent!
(4)K. Kristin P.
I am not quite sure why everyone loves this place. The have limited seating and are always crowded at lunch time because it's one of the few Mexican restaurants within walking distance of Fresno State. During the lunch hour there restaurant is so cramped that people waiting in line to order are practically hovering over other customers while they eat. In addition to the poor spacial logistics of the restaurant, the food is also a miss. There is nothing even remotely delicious about this restaurant. They usually burn the tortillas or the are so dry they don't feel like they've even been cooked. They don't serve black beans (or at least told me they didn't when I asked) and remind me of a sub par Chipotle Restaurant.
(2)Anthony V.
The carnitas torta is muy bueno. On a recent visit I tried the Al Pastor (pork) and Carne Asada tacos. The Al Pastor was just ok, and the carne asada looked to be boiled and bland....maybe it was just an off day, but I'm going to stick with the carnitas, spicy shrimp anything or the ceviche tostadas, items with the most flavor on their menu.
(3)Leigh A.
Chicken Tortas and Chicken Sopes. Yummy!
(4)Juan B.
Great asada tacos beans on them just like TJ . Great shrimp tacos and services is good next time will try the shrimp cocktail..
(4)Anna H.
This is a wonderful place. It's small, which you should be fair warned about. The spicy fish tacos and the spicy shrimp tacos are the best I've ever had. If you haven't had these, go there now and try them. They are amazing. Order at the front. They will bring your food to you. They have a free salsa bar - you just have to order chips ($1.00).
(5)Danielle B.
oh where have I been hiding?? I don't know how I have never been here before! I go to Fresno State everyday and have never been here! So glad I ventured off Shaw and found this place...what amazing and delicious food they have. I got an asada torta...Heaven! My torta and small drink was $5. The people that worked here were very friendly and constantly cleaning the whole time I was there. Prices were very reasonable and their food is great. Can't wait to try the other stuff.
(5)Lydia K.
Tonight was my first taste of this wonderful little hidden place. I'd eaten at the original on Blackstone years ago but hadn't tried this gem. It's hard to find. It's around the corner from a strip mall in what I thought was just offices. Parking is in the back. The place was clean and all the servers and cooks were kind, helpful and knowledgeable about the food. You order and pay at thecounter and they will bring your food to you fast and efficiently. Pepsi products are serve yourself and they offer many bottled sodas (including that wonderful Mexican Coca Cola in the old fashioned glass bottles. I really liked the shrimp cocktail (about $11) served in a huge stemmed glass and filled with nearly a whole chopped avocado, diced onions, cilantro, a sweet tomato salsa and 12 large perfectly cooked ice cold shrimp. I also tasted one of their tostadas (about $4) with beans, choice of meat, avocado slices, tomato, onions, sour cream and queso fresca. I tried the barbecued pork which I loved (it reminded me of pork belly). Who cares if the chips aren't free if you can get full for less than $5?
(4)Brian B.
So we just had lunch at the new Don Pepe's and if you are a fan of the original location you will enjoy this one. However, they have never been my favorite taqueria in Fresno. Their food tends to be a bit bland with their focus on boiled beans in every menu item and their Chile Verde is quite possibly the worst in town. Small shrapnel of pork instead of the larger moist chunks I associate with Chile Verde. Their tortas, the asada in particular, are the reason for the 3 star rating. They are flavorful with avocado, tomatoes, onions, and a nice mexican cheese. (Cotija maybe?) They are worthy of the trip if you are in a mood for a torta. Unfortunately, they seem to have exported all of the worst features of their original location. Let's start with the design of the building. The location is fine, hard to find, but hey that's a good thing sometimes and with Google and Yelp nothing is really that hard to find anymore. But it is small, smaller than the original and more cramped feeling. The patio helps here, but when the new location was suggested I thought, "well maybe we'll at least be able to find a seat." We couldn't. The place was so crammed that we couldn't get into the building because the residential style doors open inward. The beverage fountain is on the other side of the ordering line from the seating, so people are constantly having to excuse themselves through the line into a crammed little alcove to get their drinks and salsa. If you have a a very small zone of personal space you might enjoy the atmosphere. If brushing up against strangers is not you idea of a good time, then this might not be the place for you. All of this to say if you avoid the lunch rush your experience may be far better than if you hit them at quarter past noon on a weekday. And they are busy, so perhaps the world enjoys boiled beans more than I think they should. Regardless the large number of patrons is a good sign that this place can be recommended, but I wouldn't go in expecting to be floored by their amazing food.
(3)Rene H.
This place has reasonable prices, not cheap like a hole in the wall mexican joint, but they food is very tasty! It's a small place and it gets busy. Better to pick up and take out since it's a pain to find a seat.
(4)Umar R.
Best and healthiest fish tacos and shrimp tacos in all of Fresno and maybe even California, and this establishment is the real deal authentic taqueria and totally unique, only one of its kind, meaning its not a chain (they only have one other branch in north fresno I think) Other than being phenomenally good with those two tacos, this taqueria is by far my favorite, the menu is simple (not overwhelming), the servers are relatively friendly and speaks good english (despite hitting the Spanish with me sometimes), the establishment is clean, the other food selection taste amazing, fresh ingredients used, price is affordable and cheap ($4-$12), portion is generous , and finally the location near fresno state made it such a convenient off campus location for lunch. If your ordering these 2 tacos, try spicy because it is out of this world, and try one each because believe me one is not enough. The fish tacos $3.50 oh my god where do I even begin, its so amazing Im craving for it right now while writing this review. Anyways term and conditions before you read this, I must say this fish taco might not appeal to those who are used to the beer battered fried version because they grill it here, and then quickly pan fry it with a delicious hot sauce. In my opinion, the way they grill it and cook it in the sauce really makes it taste better than most deep fried version that I've had in San Diego and LA. I think even if someone loves and have a cling on relationship with the deep fried version, give this version a try, because really it taste so good and so fresh. So the fish tacos is grilled boneless tilapia that is then quickly pan fried with their special hot sauce. The fish itself is wrapped around a warm tortilla with finely sliced cabbage, lettuce and diced tomatoes. I love how they neatly wrap the tortilla with all those ingredients and then tuck it tightly with a white paper make it all snug and easy to eat. When you think the fish tacos was done with flavor, they drizzle it with a dollop of sour cream. The first bite itself is ecstatic and out of this world, it has a blend of slight sourness, hint sweetness, touch of spiciness all tangled up within this small fish taco and the texture is so soft yet warm, the taste of the fish is so fresh and perfectly cooked not dry so texture again was soft yet firm and literally makes you want to have one more. The fish is always generously portioned in this taco, and the balance of the vegetable is also perfect. The taco just like any taco is not big, so order 2 for lunch to get full. The shrimp tacos $3.50 is also a heavenly treat, just like its fishy twin, this taco always makes me want more. The shrimp taco is really a gastronomic experience, the first bite I could taste the perfectly cooked shrimp with firm yet soft texture not overcooked. The shrimp is cooked with the same special hot sauce and delivers a punch of heat with a hint of sourness. Then the flavor of grated Mexican cheese and some lettuce will make you question, whats in this, its so good. Some people may disagree, but this taco os really good, lets just agree to disagree. The shrimp tacos is also wrapped around a warm corn tortilla and tightly wrapped around a white paper making it really easy to enjoy this fantastic taco in your hand without all the mess. Their other dishes is also good, maybe not perfect to some mexicans, but it really does taste authentic, it clearly satisfy my taste for food south of the border. My other favorite is the supper burrito with your choice of meat for $6.70 and their combination plates for $10 is really hugely portioned, and worth the price paying. They also have torta and sopas, I can go all day giving this place a review. But the best thing here is the shrimp and fish tacos. The style of ordering here is, order at the counter and you pay for it, and you find a seat, with some miraculous harry potter magic they will find your order and know your order, it normally takes them 3-10 minutes after ordering to deliver your food depending on how busy they get. Try to avoid lunch rush, because this place has such a long line.
(5)Jeana P.
My husband and I stopped here on our way from Mono Hot Springs, its not far from the freeway, 180. Its a great little Mexican fast food joint. The grilled fish taco(s) and quesadilla are amazing! The patio is dog friendly, because its gets hot in Clovis. I will be stopping here again!
(5)Reagan H.
Super burritos are the best in town. Lots of meat in carne asada burtito. Chips are handmade and crispy. My only negative is the salsa...it's pretty good but not on the same level as the burritos and chips. If they perfected the salsa, this place would be unbeatable. Seriously, burritos and chips, so very good.
(4)Overachiever S.
I crave Don Pepe about every other day. I always order the asada tacos with no beans and then put a little pit of onions/cilantro/salsa on them and they're amazing. The tortillas are very fresh and soft. I also order a side of beans and rice that are also amazing. Overall, I can get 2 big asada tacos with a hefty portion of beans and rice for under $10... awesome. They're also very quick at preparing your food and extremely polite. Other reviewers have talked about the spicy shrimp tacos, which I've tried as well. They're also very good, a unique flavor, but I always end up going back to the asada. I do wish they offered desserts though.
(5)Rogelio B.
Great food with reasonable pricing. They have pretty big serving sizes which no one should go home hungry. One of my favorite places to have lunch.
(4)Kou M.
Salsa variety is plenty and good! Super Burrito is great tasting! Whatever meat you get, the build of it is very pleasing! The meat portion is generous, but wish it was grilled with some crisp! Love how they toast the tortilla's to a crisp and soft on the inside. The burrito is one of the best in town without the grease!
(4)Whitney J.
I have been a fan of Don Pepe's since college I would come here for burrito breaks with friends between cram sessions around finals. I had one mediocre experience in my 5 years of frequenting this place but I have never had a bad experience. I think when I had a mediocre experience the cook was having an off day but I never give up on a place if all my other experiences have been positive. My favorite things to order are the burritos with el pastor and the shrimp tacos. What I love about Don Pepe's is that there is nothing commercial about this place and it's always full of pleasant people. The customers and the actual workers are always nice to be around. I love that they have a nice selection of sides, salsa, verde, lime, cilantro, onion etc... The horchata is to die for and the Auga de jamica is just yum!!! For the individuals that had bad experiences here I do empathize with you. There is nothing worse than having your expectations of a place shattered. However coming from a person that has lived in Southern California, Northern California, Pennsylvania and Louisiana, Don Pepe has pretty solid food. However, how individual feel about food is very subjective. Thus how you feel about Don Pepe or any other food establishment is going to depend on your own personal taste. I personally like Taqueria Don Pepe and will be visiting again and would recommend.
(4)Mypang T.
My homie, Don Pepe is a great all around guy. There's several locations, my favorite and original site is located at Gettysburg and Blackstone... but I love this convenient location near Fresno State. Go Bulldogs!!! Go Studying!!! When I'm need a break from living at the library, I go to see my amigo, Don Pepe down the street and he hooks me up, gewd. He makes me vegetarian tacos and is gracious with the salsa bar. The place can get a crammed when it's busy around lunch and dinner time... but for good reason. The salsa is a little plain though, I would have to say and probably due to location. It's not spicy and kind of plain... but no biggie. I fix it up and add spice, lemon, onions, and cilantro to my own batch... and voila! I'm full. Tanks, homie.
(4)Tim T.
As an outsider from Detroit, I can say it's very good food. Everyone is right, get the spicy shrimp taco. I got a spicy shrimp and a reg fish. The fish was very bland and not that great. I also ordered 2 coronas, which came with a few pours of hot sauce and a shrimp. Kinda strange, but when in Rome....
(4)Jasmine C.
I walked in at 3:01, left at 3:03 with a bag of Asada Super Nachos in my hand. Now THAT is quick service. Although I'll admit it wasn't packed, it was still pretty quick and also very convenient for me since I was in a bit of a rush! Anyways, parking at Don Pepe's is a little bit weird and hard to find if there are a lot of people, but it's not too much of a hassle of you park by the Deli Delicious and just walk to Don Pepe's. I always come here and get their Chicken Super Nachos, but I've heard that their quesadillas are superb as well. I decided to switch it up a bit and get Asada instead, and I don't regret it at all! The meat is flavorful and there is a wonderful balance of flavors in the nachos. But is it worth $7? Maybe $5, but $7 is pushing it. Going to Pepe's is super convenient for me since it's literally just across the street from Fresno State. I'll continue to keep going here as long as the food stays the same wonderful quality and the service is just as great! Keep it up, Don Pepe's :)

I have been coming to this place specifically for their lengua for years now. It's really soft, and had a nice flavor to it. The service has always been really fast, and I haven't had a problem with pricing either. It's a very convenient place for college students that want good Mexican food, rather than the usual Robertitos carne asada fries.

I've been here a few times for a carne asada burrito. While the burrito is good in terms of taste and ingredients the size of the burrito is smaller than the competition and overpriced..... In other words, you're paying more for less. This place is over rated in my opinion. I'd rather drive a couple extra miles south to get something far more tastier, bigger, and cheaper.

Beans in my tacos?? Surprisingly good and I can get used to it.. Tripas tacos was a little crunchy on the outside and not chewy.. Asada had decent seasoning and fish taco was good size battered fish and tasted good.. Self serve salsa bar is definitely an A+ in my book.. Service resembles a cafeteria style dining, which isn't bad considering its a little taco spot.. Oh yeah, 3.5 stars to be exact and the .5 is for having mandarin jarritos, my choice of drink when having tacos, when not in mood for beer..

This place is HANDS DOWN (manos abajo) the best cheap Mexican food in town. I got the pastor burrito and was stunned and amazed once again. "Every little thing that you do, baby, I'm amazed by you." The burrito was juicy yet not a mess to eat, and the salsas and sauces were excellent as always. The sodas were even better than expected. The entire group I went with was in love with the food! My lips, tongue, and teeth ache with desire from this burrito! The service is great--come for the food and stay for the service. I also enjoy the restaurant's decor, and their chile verde makes me wanna nut. Thanks a lot, ladies and gentleman! The hat is out of the bag!

I love this place. My favorite is their shrimp tacos. I've also tried their bean and cheese burrito and it was delicious. The staff is always friendly and the service is quick! I come here so often and never get tired of it!

Don Pepe's is near Fresno state. Their prices are very affordable, especially for students. It is located right behind Deli Delicious and has it's own private parking lot. I love their shrimp tostadas with lots of tapatio sauce The downside about this place is their building size. All of their tables are too closed from each other.

The best shrimp tacos ($3.95) in all the land, and plain and simple.

I love thier chili Verde burrito. I always get at least 2. Super cheap, big and yummy. I love that they have a self serve sauce bar.

I am very disappointed in the people that review this place 3+more stars. I am originally from LA and maybe I have high standards for Mexican food or taquerias but this place is flavorless and not authentic We basically order all the meats, tacos de lengua, buche, el pastor, chile verde, asada, tripas, and their famous shrimp tacos. Where to start, the shrimp taco was okay but not enough flavor, it had a lot of over cooked rice, so I moved on to the next taco, el pastor was not good, the meat was so dry, the tripas were so gross, if you have never had tripas this is not the place to try them, the tripas were over cooked, they did not have any flavor. So I moved on to the chile verde and I have to say that was the best out of all of them maybe because it didn't have any meat. Who knows!! So my boyfriend practically eats anything but when it came down to eating the buche tacos he decline, he said one bite and he almost puke, and it's not like you can save the tacos by adding salsa which they provide on their decent size salad bar, their salsa is water down which makes it tasteless. We also order a large horchata and oh boy was it sweet. I will not be visiting this place in the future and do yourself a favor if you are from LA or San Francisco area do not give this place you will be disappointed. On a positive note: the place was clean

The Shrimp Tacos are delicious. The other tacos are OK, im not a person that likes Beans in the tacos. i do have to say that the Tortas are a good size. the salsas that they have are homemade and i recomend them.

What can I say? It's Don Pepe's. I started eating at the Blackstone location about 20 years ago. My favorites range from the al pastor torta to the shrimp cocktail. You can never go wrong with one of their burritos either. Carne asada, shrimp, al pastor, etc. are all well seasoned and go well in their burritos. I tried the sopes the last time I went and again, did not walk out disaapointed Writing about it makes me want to go over there now and eat....I wonder how late they are open tonight?

Every single item I've ordered from the menu has been devine. Keep up the good cookin.

The small restaurant with an equally small patio had a steady stream of patrons the entire time we were there. Many placed orders to go which I saw as a good sign. The food did not disappoint. My carnitas torta and fiancée's vegetarian burrito were yummy. The carnitas were flavorful and they did not skimp on the avocado, which always makes me happy. The salsa bar had a nice selection from mild to spicy. The simplicity of the mild salsa had my fiancée going back several times for more. I offered to ask if I could buy a pint, but she was too embarrassed. We noticed the shrimp dishes seemed to be the most popular. The shrimp cocktails were good-sized. If I remember correctly, they have among other things, shrimp burritos, tacos, tostadas, and even garnish your beer with shrimp. Our only comaint is the young lady taking orders could use a refresher course on customer service.

Food was excellent. Service was quick and efficient. Seating is somewhat limited. Good experience overall. Tip: if your vegetarian and order a beer ask for no shrimp.

Go with the spicy shrimp burrito or tacos! On Saturdays only they serve some of the best menudo in town! Highly recommended!

I'm not a huge Mexican food fan, so it must be good for me to enjoy it. This was my first time here and I was blown away. Red chicken enchiladas, chips and guac, beans, rice, salsa, all great. Recommended! Oh, how about $40 for 5 people. I got a new hangout in my neighborhood.

Clean, delicious, and a good price (more expensive than a taco truck but cheaper than a sit down Mexican) for lots of delicious food. Plus the staff is super friendly! It is a great place for casual eating. I've had the shrimp tacos and super burrito. The shrimp tacos seem pricey but they're huge! It's closer to the size of a burrito. I got two and I ate both because they were delicious but I really would've been fine with one. You can't go wrong with the super burrito. This is also huge. Another plus is the free serve yourself salsa bar, which also includes lemons, onions, and cilantro. They also sell horchata which I haven't tried but I definitely will the next time I go.

I love their food! Authentic Mexican food. I always get shrimp burrito or combination plate. Everything is good here. This is my go to in fresno.

Modelo especial with shrimp and octopus on the side with a Lengua taco with beans and cheese . Breakfast of champions

the only thing i hate here is it gets too packed, and can't find parking....other than that...this place hits the spot..... freshness goodies!!!

i loved the Don Pepe's on BLACKSTONE so of course i had to go try this taqueria on Woodrow. Went the guy messed up my order and they put way too much cheese on everything. Wasn't the worst food i've ever had, but it could've been so much better.

Been to this place three times now and have finally felt compelled to write a review. I've had a different item every time I have been there. I's had the spicy shrimp burrito, tacos de cabeza, and carne asada burrito and all are delicious. Don't forget to grab some slasa and lemons from the bar, they are delish

Don Pepe is my absolute favorite Mexican joint in Fresno. I'm so glad they're expanding and adding new locations! I recommend getting the spicy shrimp tacos--if you like spicy food they are SO good. The shrimp cocktails are great, too.

Stopped there the other day and I got to say it was pretty good. I got the burrito for to go, but decided to eat there. It was a fast order. Parking wasn't too pack and that's probably because it was only 12 p.m. The salsa bar is great. Since there are so many great reviews about the shrimp tacos, I'll have to check it out myself another day. Will definitely go back here and there. Overall, great food and service.

Overall 5 Stars Food: 5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Atmosphere: 4 Stars Whenever I am in need of some great mexican food, this is the place I go. I have been going here for years. They are finally getting a yelp review from me (current yelp kick). Thus the 5 stars as well. Don Pepe's consistently delivers awesome food at a great price. I am a sucker for their shrimp taco's (best in fresno) and their pork. The pork is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. They cook the shrimp and fish in country crock (so you know it tastes amazing.) They then can make it spicy which is my favorite. Once you get your food you can go to the condiment station and load up on many of their salsa's hot to mild, jalapeno's, cilantro, onion, lemons, limes. The staff is super friendly and smiling ( I assume because they work around all this bomb ass food). The restaurant itself is nicely located and has a seating area outside for the times when the weather is actually nice outside. Love Don Pepe's

So went to bed last night thinking about their carne asada and spicy shrimp burrito, woke up in the am with it still on my brain. I went in this morning around 10:30 am and ordered exactly that and man did it hit the spot add some fresh lime juice and their habanero hot sauce to every bite it was on point!!!!!! Can't say enough about how good it was!!!!
(5)Edgar M.
I cant say enough about their spicy shrimp tacos!!! I am very picky with mexican food and these tacos are awesome!!! We eat here at least once a week. The service is quick and the people working are always nuce. If you are in the area you have to check out one of their locations

This place is great. I only go to a few Mexican places in Fresno. Tacos TJ, Dos Palmas and here, Don Pepe. They serve authentic Mexican food. The people are nice. The prices vary. Seafood can get pricey but I order shrimp every time because its just that good!!

LOVE this place!! My bf and I both are hooked. My favorite is the spicy shrimp taco!! Pregnancy doesn't allow me to eat it so I can't wait until I can!!!

The best fish taco in Fresno/Clovis, much better than Wahoo Fish Toco in Fresno. Very good Menudo on the weekends only. No hominy in it and a very rich and flavorful broth. Served with onion, cilantro, chili flakes and lime with corn or flour tortillas. The fish is not deep fried add it can be ordered spicy or not. Now as for the Shrimp Taco, it is best (for me) to have them leave the rice out of it. Why the Shrimp Taco comes with rice inside and the fish taco does not is strange but either way, I don't like rice in my taco's. Boiled pinto beans is standard in most of their tacos. The also have Tripa Tacos or anything you want to make with the Tripas They offer beer Compresta style. That is with chili, salt and a Shrimp placed into the mouth of the bottle....but it is $4 a pop Also have had the Chile Verde Burrito- You can get it Regular or Special. I do not like the Special because of the rice and avocado inside. Tacos are on a larger (compared to taco truck) corn tortilla, you could request flour tort instead. Order is placed at walk up counter, but food is brought to your table.

This is probably the best fast mexican food in the area. I like creamy cheese sauce on my nachos and they are the only ones that have it. I usually get an asada burrito and it is always good. Great diet Pepsi!
