This place is crap. That is unless you like oily, unbalanced, stingy on the meat portion, poorly serviced food. We felt totally ripped off when we order our fish pot and got nothing but bones and skin. The numbing spice was way too overpowering and the oil ruined my digestive system for 2 days.

Surprisingly good. I ad no idea. I thought it was all about the General who smoked pot so we didnt really want to go there. We tried it and WOW! Great food, great staff, and a nice environment. A little reminder of Taiwan for me. Tasty. Not as good as Nutrition House or Ma's though but damned tasty if you are in Fremont.

Been here 3 times and have tried 3 different spicy dry pots. I still think that chicken wings pot is still the best. I also love the stringed potato, peanuts, and bean sprouts in spicy hot sauce appetizer. And they have this home-made gluten balls. They are yummy!!! Just a note, if you don't want soupy pot, make sure you don't order too much vegetables.

Horrible food, very expensive, no regard for customer's feedback. so not going back there! Shrimp was covered with shell, fish came with its bones, how the HECK am i supposed to eat that. Their way of making food spicy is terrible - they threw in zillion chillis there - which are non-edible! When i told them i am not enjoying my food, the waiter smiles and says "enjoy your food!" are you kidding me?!?!? too much oil as well.

  • lucie l.

Don't be fooled. This is NOT hot pot with soup. Once we sat down and looked at the menu, we wanted to leave but we were too polite, so we ordered something. What we got was a mess of stuff in a wok with chili oil. Will not be coming back ever.

3.5 best to get the dry pot so suppose missed out on their best dish. otherwise the spicy chicken was standard and water boiled fish just ok. the veggie dish with pea shoot was good.

Service: slooooooow Food: spicy, even if you pick "mild" It took close to an hour for our food to come out, and we were never updated about what was happening. The explanation we got after informing them that we had been waiting too long for our food: they were busy fulfilling a large take-out order. I don't think that's a valid excuse. Getting a large take-out order shouldn't mean that your patrons who are already present at your establishment have to suffer. Even if you like spicy food, please consider the poor service before deciding to try this restaurant.

What is with the glut of average Chinese food in a city as Asian as Fremont? General Pot is rescued from total oblivion by occupying a unique niche. Its main specialty is the soupless hot pot, which comes with a base set of ingredients (spices, veggies, meat), to which you add more a la carte. I recommend getting the spicy base menu and adding lotus root. You probably need to order about 3-5 additional ingredients to make the pot really substantial. They also have a decent-sized menu of other dishes. The one standout I remember was the fishy tofu dish. I'm not sure how it was made, and I know it sounds kind of gross, but I think it contained fish paste and a really eggy tofu. It was soft, drenched in savory sauce, and the fish flavor was just right. Kind of like those fishballs you find in soup sometimes, but even better. Between this tofu and the hot pot-style, General Pot gets a slight bump--3.5 stars.

I like this place, spicy food! it's clean than the other Chinese restaurant. But the service is too slow.

Omg, THE WORST FOOD I'VE EVER HAD TO SWALLOW!!! My boyfriend and I just wanted a decent meal instead of a burger from across the street. I happened to be a fan of spicy foods and rumor has it that Fremont have very good Chinese cuisine and the spicy levels are no joke. We came upon this place on Yelp and so decided to give it a chance to impress us but it turned out to be a nightmare! The waiter seated us right away so no wait, and we ordered the "spicy combination hotpot" with the "lotus root stir fried veggies" and white rice. We waited over 40 minutes for our food to come out which was ridiculous considering all the other tables around us already have food and eating. The veggies dish came out first along with the rice. It was very oily and full of MSG in every bite (I can tell b/c MSG causes excessive salivation). Then 15 minutes after the veggies and rice, the hotpot finally came out. We were eager to try the soup since the wait was long. In the pot, there were skimpy pieces of fish, napa cabbage, noodles, spam, and scattered pieces of lamb and the broth was drenched in chili oil and whole grain of black pepper (or so I thought). The first bite burned our tongues, and not from the hot temperature of the broth but from the spiciness of the chili oil and bizarre spices in the pot!!! The taste was hard to pinpoint since I've never tasted anything quite like it, but for the rest of the meal we were practically fishing for the meat!! We didn't want to drink the soup and couldn't help leaving left overs because not only was it extremely spicy, it leaves a weird after taste in our mouths. Gosh, to simply-put it was horrendous and disgusting and made us wished real bad for the burgers and fries! The whole meal costed $26 for foods that were no good, greasy, too much MSG and tasteless!!! As soon as we paid for the meal, we rushed out of there and never looked back! You can bet we are never coming back and definitely not recommending this place, so AVOID AVOID AVOID, it's not worth your time and money!!!!!!

The food is AMAZING! Very authentic southern Chinese food at an affordable price. My family have been twice in the last couple of weeks and the beef pot is the best. Even the Chinese grandmothers agree :D. It is spicy so order mild if you don't like things too spicy. Contrary to the two negative reviews about the slow service, the service was quick both times we went and the staff was super nice.

I finally tried this place last Saturday, and am planning to go this weekend, too. The food is more like Xiang style of Chinese cuisine. Guess not many people knew about it, so my friends and I didn't wait and sit in right away. I should come more before it gets well-known. :) For party of five, we ordered beef + chicken wing pot, and four or five small dishes to add into the pot, a fried rice as well. We enjoyed and got so full, total less than $70 including tax + tips!

I've been here for more than 10 times. And the flavor varies. In most cases it's super yummy but sometimes I even doubt if they have had another chef. I give it four rather than five stars because every time I went there the owner promised to give us a discount but I got none.

Came here for dinner, bright and warm atmosphere inside, attentive servers and clean surfaces! Menu is interesting and certainly unique...you basically pick your flavor profile and main type of meat and they bring it out precooked in a big wok with lots of veggies like lotus root and bean sprouts. you can also add other menu items into the wok for nominal charges (try taro!!!) tasted great, one wok will feed 2-4 people depending on how hungry you are and if you order anything else. Can't wait to bring some friends here, it's a fun and unique dining experience for a chinese restaurant =)

General pot used to be AWESOME and each subsequent visit it has gotten worse, they started skimping on all aspects of the eating experience from service to amount of ingredients in the pot. I hope they would return to how things were or the place will become even more desserted.

Came here for lunch today with a couple of the boys. First off the place was pretty clean and inviting. It wasn't all that busy when we went, so we were seated and able to order quickly, which is a plus since I'm always on a time crunch for lunch outside of work, unlike my friends. Boo. Anyway we got the lunch special which had several choices of base stew/pot stuff (i.e. spicy beef stew, spicy chicken, spicy frog somethin. You can choose your spice level mild, medium or spicy too. We ended up with mild due to a couple of us suffering from bad stomachs recently), with a choice of 2 free additional things to throw into the pot (we got the hotpot noodle and snow pea sprout) for $20. In addition we also got a plate of szechuan spicy chicken with peppers (or more like red peppers with chicken). All in all it was filling for three people, came out to about $33 including tax and tip. Not so bad. The stew/pot was pretty tasty. The beef came in medium sized chunks mixed in with tendon and was not bad, though I had a run in with a chewy chunk of meat, though I took almost the whole thing in one bite. I guess that'll teach me. Other things that was part of the stew were potato chunks, bean sprouts, lotus root, and I think some sort of fungus and somethin or other. It wasn't very salty, but I would recommend rice to balance it out anyway unless you want to be the one to finish all the good stuff before anybody else gets in there. It was pretty sizable for three dudes. The peppers with chicken wasn't anything special... it was a little oily, but it all ends up the same as other szechuan places that offer the same dish - with numb lips and mouth. Still...can't really go wrong with peppers and chicken. In the end I think we'll probably come here again and brave the medium or even spicy pot when our stomachs aren't bein a buncha big babies.

Ordered a general pot, with a couple add-ons. There wasn't much of the add-ons. The pot was very spicy, but lacked other flavors. Not very good. Didn't try the other dishes. Kind of expensive too for the quantity of food they give you.

This place was off the hook in spice. If you like it hot and tasty them this is the place to go. Service is good although the language might present a problem to some, however, they do a good job of making you feel at home. The dry pots are outstanding, just be careful of the table burner. Overall I would recommend.

I went to General Pot for the first time a few days ago as part of my mission to try all the restaurants in Pacific Commons. I shared a general fish pot with my boyfriend. The idea of the general pot is you pick a meat such as chicken or fish which comes with a collection of veggies in the pot. The waiter brings you a steaming pot of food that they place on the table upon a mini stove. It is essentially an epic stir-fry. I loved the atmosphere of the place, bustling with customers and sizzling smells. If you're not a fan of spicy food make sure to order your food mild! We asked for medium and our food was very spicy, filled to the brim with red peppers. I wonder what the spicy version is like! Our waiter brought much needed refills of water back to our table multiple times. Our pot was filled with delicious veggies, but they very sparingly used actual fish. In fact the small portion of fish we received was filled with bones. I'd recommend a chicken or pork pot to avoid the bones. They did use chunks of corn on the cob bits in the stir-fry that had a bursting sweetness to counteract the peppers. It was plenty of food between the two of us. Our serving could have easily served four people. This place is a steal money wise if you come with a large group! In fact we took most of it home with us. The service was a bit slow at first. But once the waiter took our order he was quite attentive. I definitely plan to come back to this place with more people for a tasty family style eating experience.

ok folks, this is not a hot pot joint were you get a pot of boiling soup to cook your meats and veggies in. first meal here was pretty impressive. can't wait to try more options on the menu.

seeing how crowded it was inside, my bf and i had to go in and check this place out. i love spicy, but he can only handle so much so we ordered our pot "mild". it still came out pretty damned spicy and covered in roasted chili peppers. the pot was very filling and we had enough left over for another meal, but the spice over powered any other flavor or complexity in the dish. perhaps we ordered the wrong item... because based on our experience, i can't understand why this restaurant is so busy. it seemed pretty average to me.

Maybe the spicy pots I had back China is too good, this one can only get three stars from me. BTW, they only accept one credit card per table.

  • Pawan R.

This place is freaking YUMMY! The food is ultra spicy with great taste. The food is sort of like hot pot, but not really. You order the food and then the staff cooks the food in the back and brings it out in a hot pot type sauce. I've never had any food like this. This is the kind of place where you try it once and then constantly crave it after.

I like this place! I really like spicy food and frogs (Well, I am a Chinese ;) ), so I especially enjoy the frog pot! Of course there are some good pots like beef, pork and etc other than frogs. ;) Haha~ And yes, it is not the hot pot with soup, but that doesn't mean they try to fool you (I bring it up because of a review I saw). I would like to help them clarify it a bit, it is a very famous dish from ChongQing, Chinese call it DRY POT (Sorry I am not sure if that's the correct English name). It is very tasty for my friends and me because we like heavy taste. Besides the food, service is also good, waiters are very friendly. I drive from Mountain View to there! Wish they can open one in MV in the future!

I really like this place! Service is fast and they always help/recommend what to order. Most of their dishes are on the salty side though but VERY flavorful. i love the spareribs dry pot and this loofah with fish gluten dish! I'd come a lot more often if I lived closer!

Packed at lunch time! I've tried the beef stew pot, and ordered the spicy fish, scallion pancake, and a cold spicy chicken dish. It seems that all the flavors of their entrees are similar - mix of red chili pepper, black peppercorn, and star anise. I personally love this flavor, and had gone back within 2 days of trying it out for the first time. The scallion pancakes are the best I've had in the bay area, thin, crispy, not too doughy, and with actual scallion flavor! Yum!!

It's the worst restaurant in the mall right across the costco. I feel regret for trying something fresh. I just didn't get it why there is a lot ppl willing to wait in a line to get served, (Most likely because it's grand open,or they just like taste spicy. The furniture and the color of the paint is really makes me feel cheap. I will say the service is just okay, but with some terrible food to match. It took us about 15 mins to get the order on table, ( spicy pork short ribs, sauteed snow bean leaf)it's really pissed me up when i am starving. sauteed snow bean leaf: I feel like i am just drinking oil, maybe oil=water is what they have in their chief's mind. spicy pork short ribs: It feels not bad at the beginning, but once it's get hotter, all you can taste is spicy, you can't tell any flavor of the pork, potato, seaweed, or something else, you just know what are you eating. And the Quantity of "Add" is way too small. you can get one add in one spoon. And it doesn't worth 40 bucks at all. I would never ever come back to that place.

7 people had a great Chinese dry pot there. $66 excluding tax. We ate till we were full. It felt just like we were eating in china. Definitely will go back again.

They've got an interesting spin on hot pot. This is a DRY pot, where they cook an assortment of spicy (mild, medium, hot) of meats (fish, chicken, pig intestine) and additional add-ons (enoki mushroom, cabbage, etc). The pot is a pretty good size and probably could feed 3-4 people per pot, if you also get an appetizer or additional dish. The onion pancakes are pretty good too, and would recommend them as well.

I don't know what happened. We were seated right away during a normal dinner time rush. The waiter was friendly enough to help us order since it was our first time here. After the order was put in, we waited for our food for 40+ minutes. During that time, a table in front of us finished paying, the wait staff cleaned the table, a new family sat and ordered, and they got their food and ate for 10 minutes before we walked out. When we asked two people about our food, one walked right past us without acknowledging us and the other who took our ordered ran off telling us "hold on". Only when we were out the door did they suddenly give us any attention. I'll take my business elsewhere, thank you very much.

Not impressed with this place. Ordered General made spicy chicken wings lunch special. The entree came with steamed rice and soup. The soup was hot but not much flavor. The entree as you can see in the picture had waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too many dry chillies. Dry chillies without the seeds. If that many chillies had all the seeds that dish would have been fiery hot. Basically had 4 to 5 pieces of wings small in size cut into 2 pieces each. The dish was around 9 bucks expected better. Bottom line will not be visiting again. Sorry

General Pot specializes in Dry Hot Pots. It's good with large groups when you can order a bunch of ingredients all mixed in a big pot. It's pretty economical especially for students. General Pot is filled with young people. There are other things on the menu but the main dish is the Gan Guo. We had the beef Gan Guo with a bunch of other items in it. The whole pot is way too much for two people. You can choose your level of spicyness. Service is good. Plenty of parking.

I forgot how I stumbled upon this place, but it is easily one of my favorite Chinese restaurants at the moment. A couple visits in, I realized the manager looked really familiar. It was then I realized that I had met him almost a year ago at AT&T and he had given me his name-card to promote his new restaurant...General Pot! I guess it was fate that I would fall in love with this place. Rating Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste -- OK several disclaimers here. I don't eat super spicy. I've never had their dry hot pot. Wow. A lot of the other reviews focus on the dry pot, but let me tell you, their other dishes are not shabby either. If you order anything on the menu and you see that it has Chinese celery, cilantro, and is covered in red chilies, it's going to be delicious. I highly recommend the cilantro beef and the cold noodles as an appetizer. I don't know what's in that tangy red chili sauce, but it is what's CRACK-A-LACKIN'! You also can't leave without trying their sauteed pig intestines. It comes in a dry hot pot, but the smaller plate ($9.99) is totally enough for me. It has a slow spiciness that builds! The crispy outside and the chewy inside has you gasping for more...or is that the spice? If I ever were to try a dry hot pot, it would be with the intestines, hands down. The crispy tofu dish is also amazing. The fried tofu comes smothered with a minced meat sauce. It goes great with rice. In fact, everything here goes great with rice because the dishes tend toward the salty side. I love that, but others may not. 1/1 Stars for Value -- At around $10 a dish, not bad for authentic Chinese food, especially with the large portion sizes. We usually spend about $12-15 dollars per person, but we end up taking boxes home. The dry hot pot is usually $15-20, but it can feed up to 4 people easily when paired with one or two other dishes. 1/1 Stars for Customer Service -- One time, my sister and I came specifically for the intestines. When we ordered, the lady informed us that the intestines wouldn't be ready for another hour or so. The devastation must have been written all over our faces because she apologized, back away from our table, and gave us a moment to re-think our order. When we came back the next time, she saw us and immediately reassured us that there was intestine that day. Also, they get that star just for putting up with my Dad's Dad jokes. Ugh. haha Bonus Star because I cannot get enough of this place! I come more than once a month, for sure. I dream about those intestines and cold noodles. Mmm....maybe I should head over for dinner.

Be aware, when it states Spicy, it IS spicy. The chefs here loves their chilli peppers & they mean business when it comes down to using it in their dishes. We underestimated this place & opted for the "hot" level for our Shrimp General Pot. Oh boy, did we regretted it. We were too busy sweating bullets and crying mercy to enjoy our meal, BUT would def love to give it another try next time. The General Pot was piled with beans sprouts, mushrooms, carrots so you don't need to order that many ingredients. We got shrimps, pea sprouts along w it and it was enough food for 4 ppl. We also got the spicy pork-- and again, if you can't handle level 3 at tapioca express for popcorn chicken, you should definitely pass on this dish! but it was definitely good tho. We tried counting the peppers & I lost count after 50.

Dry Hot Pots! Can you believe that? Excited and curious I went into this place with a couple friends. Wow I was blown away by such kind of Chinese food. The food is definitely spicy, but you can still taste the goodness of the entire pot. I would say that this place targets younger crowds as it provides satisfying portion (2-3 adults per pot is way more than enough!) with a decent price. This is definitely on my list when I'm craving for spicy Chinese food again. Again, not the traditional Sze-Chuan spicy Chinese food you've experienced, but you will be impressed. Cheers!

Surprisingly good service for Chinese restaurant. Dry pot was definitely different and worth a try, very large quantities of food

The hours listed here are not accurate. They seem to close after lunch like most chinese restaurants and open for dinner at 5pm. On to the food: my wife and i had the frog leg pot with some added pig intestines and wood ear. It was awesome. If you like spicy and salty foods then this place is for you. We also ordered spicy chicken wings dish and it was crispy, salty, spicy and ever so slightly sweet. The perfect balance of flavor.

This review is not for their dry hot pots, as they're pretty much all really spicy and I don't really eat spicy food (my parents, who are China natives and are avid spicy eaters, say that the dry hot pots are pretty good though). I like the feel of this medium-sized restaurant. It's clean, casual, and the menus are adorable. The only thing I would watch out for is that it can get really loud in here, as a lot of younger people come here in groups to eat hot pot. They also have the tv turned up really loud sometimes, and there's always some Chinese drama or show on. The tea here is your normal tea bagged tea, which was a little disappointing because I was hoping they would at least have loose-leaf, but the flavor wasn't bad. The waitress was even nice enough to change the tea bag for us after our third refill because the flavor was fading. Service here was a little slow, but the waiters and waitresses are pretty nice and attentive. Sweet, sour, and spicy potato appetizer with slivers of cucumber: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/gene… ) I only had a bite of this chilled dish because I don't really eat spicy food, but it's not incredibly spicy as there is only a bit of chili flakes scattered throughout. The potato and cucumber slivers are mostly mixed with white vinegar, sugar, and some other spices. This was really good, incredibly refreshing, and light. My mom (who is super duper picky about Chinese food) even liked it! Loofah squash with fish gluten puffs: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/gene… ) If you've never had fish gluten puffs, they're basically gluten puffs with fish paste stuffed inside. I liked this dish. It was light, flavorful, and not too sticky. I really dislike it when chefs put a lot of potato starch in after the vegetables are cooked so that there's seemingly less juice; it all just turns to this sticky, gelatinous mess that clings to the vegetables and makes them taste so heavy and soggy. The loofah squash was cooked well, tender but not soggy, and the fish gluten puffs are some of the best I've had. Stir-fried large pea sprouts: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/gene… ) Large pea sprouts are some of my favorite vegetables, so I've had them at a lot of places. This wasn't the best I've had, but it's not the worst either. The pea sprouts themselves were a little tough, but the cook on them was nice, not too oily and not too overcooked. A good dish if you're looking for some simple, healthy vegetables. Spicy stir-fried lamb: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/gene… ) I didn't actually try this, but my dad (who grew up eating traditional spicy food) said that it was the best dish of the night. If you don't like the gamey taste of lamb, you can also replace the meat with beef, but the cook and pairing will be the same.

I'm not a fan of spicy food but Shao Mountain was packed so we headed here. Surprised this did not fill up immediately (although a lot of traffic must have gotten wise to waiting and came here). Believe me, you won't be surprised (although I still want to try Shao Mountain). The food here is spicy too--we got the lamb hot pot at middle level spicy and it was FLAMING. The meat was tender too. We also got the xiao long bao (Shanghai dumpling with soupy meat) and it did not disappoint. The fried noodles were also welcome. We got the meat medley (since we can't decide between beef or chicken or whatever the third choice was). It turned out to be flavorful. Overall, very good!

After hearing my coworkers rave about this place for a few weeks now, I finally had a chance to try it today. And I can't believe I've been missing out all this time. Everything was deliciously spicy! We got the spicy beef with wood ear fungus, lobster balls and taro in medium spicy. It had a nice kick to it but I want to try to the spicier level next time. We also ordered the fried rice which was also good. The only thing I didn't like was the service. We got the hotpot 10 minutes before the fried rice and we asked the waitress to check on it and her response was "yeah, yeah" and walked away. Other than the service, the food is 4 stars in my book. Can't wait to come back with the BF to try the other hotpot options.

Came here on a Monday around 2:30-3PM. Mom and I were walking around the area to find a place to eat, but this was the only one opened since all the other restaurants around close between lunch and dinner. It was eerily empty and quiet, but we were welcomed and seated right away. Mom ordered some stir-fried noodles with vegetables and I ordered spicy beef mixed with onions and bell peppers. Both were pretty mediocre, nothing special, but a little on the greasy side. They did forget the soup for my lunch special meal, but I wasn't too bothered to ask. Probably won't come here again with all the other options around the area. Lesson learned: come before 2:30 so you aren't forced to eat at the only restaurant still opened past 2:30PM.

We only go here when we want a large and tasteful meal. The pot is a must if you want to really get the essence of this restaurant. Others are just sides, or to make the menu filled. Pot is the main dish here . The foods in pot are actually pre-cooked before they serve in pot, so you might either choose to wait for the pot to boil some time or eat right after it was served. You can also choose to mix and match up to TWO main choices and make ONE pot. e.g., ribs & beef, beef & wings, etc... Sides for pot will depends mainly on your preference. I feel regardless what I ordered there will be always some certain combinations plus some slightly more extra stuffs that I ordered. They have 5% off if you pay cash, they also do accept credit cards.

I've never had dry hot pot before, but wow its sooo good! A lot of people around 8pm when we came, but still a couple of empty tables. The three of us shared an order of the duck meat dry hot pot and added on intestines, eggs, and tofu. OMG so yummy! Medium spicy was good enough for me, my stomach was warm after a few hours of eating it. We also ordered the chicken and corn soup, which was very good as well. $16 per person wasn't bad and we finished everything. The portion was ok that we weren't overly stuffed. I am looking forward to coming back here!

I traveled to China a couple months ago and as a foodie, I certainly sampled LOTS of food there. The most memorable food in China was GAN GUO "Dry pot." The concept is basically similar to Chinese Hot Pot (Chinese fondue) where you pick the meat and vegetables and cook them all in one pot, except that "Gan Guo" is "dry" with no broth/soup. When I saw the restaurant posting on Yelp, I was really intrigue and excited! We ordered the "beef" gan guo ($19.99) and added the lotus roots and wood ear mushroom. We asked for "medium spiciness." The portion was LARGE and actually, there were already some vegetables that came with the pot (when we placed our order we thought it was only beef). So, with the $19.99 price tag, you actually get sliced beef, some mushroom, bean sprouts, onions and celery. Also, they actually didn't give a lot of the extra items that we ordered, so maybe next time, it wouldn't be necessary to add extra items into the pot. If you like spicy food though, medium is not going to cut it. As a matter of fact, my gf who doesn't eat spicy at all, could handle the medium heat, so next time we will probably order the extra spicy pot to experience the heat. The flavor of the gan guo though, was super delicious, lots of flavor, just lacked of spiciness, in my opinion, hahahaha! We also ordered two non spicy dishes, fish fillet stir fry in wine sauce (and with some veggies) and the vegetables cooked with thousand years egg & chinese ham in broth. I must say, both the non spicy dishes were also really good. The fish was not fishy and had just the right flavor of saltiness. The vegetables dish were soupy but the broth was light and hearty, I would certainly order this dish again! Price wise, considering the portion, everything was very reasonable! Major complaint and why I'm giving a 4 stars vs 5 stars was that they were VERY SLOW! The food came out very slowly.. probably 30 minutes long, which is unheard of in a Chinese Restaurant. There were lots of diners, BUT they could have been more efficient and they would have a lot better turnover of customers if they would be faster in cooking the food! We went on a Saturday night and we waited about 10 minutes for a table of 4, so not too bad. Certainly, will come here again!

Came here in a party of 2 on a Friday evening. We were seated promptly at 6:30pm. We ordered dry chicken pot with knotted bean curd. Spice level was mild spicy. In addition, we ordered a veggie (tender luffa) with dry shrimps. Really enjoyed the veggie dish. We would have enjoyed the dry pot more. However, we wanted more knotted bean curd, and the pot was on the saltier side. Next time, I would ask for mild spice and mild salt. Docked 1 star for that. Still willing to drive from peninsula to east bay for 30 minutes one way for this place.

I have been here several times. Their hot pot is genuine Sichuan food and was with good quality before. This time, however, most of their veggies are not fresh AT ALL. especially Lotus root and potato, have to discard all of them. We had chicken wing and shrimp pot, the wing and shrimp are fresh but not a lot of quantity. Only enough for 2 ppl. We ordered to go and that's wrong also. The celery and union are not fully cooked. They suppose u cooked more time after served on the table, they should do this for to go customers but they don't. Another thing, the package for to go r poor. It's leaked. The 2 star only for the nice server.

This new restaurant took the place of A La Shanghai, and boy am I glad... The previous establishment just didn't cut it (so slooooooow). General Pot is a very nice change, and a great addition to the restaurant selections in the Pacific Commons. My colleague and I are always searching for places that serve up good spicy dishes. The "hot pot" served here is not what you may be used to thinking of... It actually is individual woks that have stir fried dish of your choice with added ingredients of your choice. They cook it in the kitchen, and add all the extra fixings to the top, and place it on a gas burner on your table top to continue cooking it. This basically helps your meal continuously cook in the mild to hot (your choice) sauce and melds the flavors together for a great meal. We ordered up the fried chicken wing hot pot. My colleague wanted to ask for something between medium to hot so it wouldn't burn a hole in our stomachs (we had both felt that once after ordering an extra spicy dish at another restaurant and regretted it)... What we got was a great dish with just the right amount of heat from the hot sauce and red chili peppers and mouth numbing green peppercorns. Chicken wings were fried, but mixed well with the sauce. We added rice cakes (nice and tender and chewy), and frozen tofu (soaked up all the sauce - good). It already came with bean sprouts, lotus root, chunks of potato, and wood ear mushrooms. They also give you a big container of rice, which helps balance out the heat. All in all, a good experience. Will come back to try something else... Oh yes, and they also have "frog hot pot" - not so sure about that....

Really spicy, and I love spice! Not a true dry hot-pot- since everything is already cooked for you and they just place it on a burner to keep it warm and remix everything. It's like eating one big entree. A little bit pricey in my opinion for technically one dish that doesn't contain seafood. Staff are pleasant and friendly. Would come back again when I'm in need of some tongue tingling spice.

Spicy szechuan mixed with taiwenese food? Worth a shot. They menu had the usual 500 options with no pictures, thankfully Yelp had photos. I had no idea what to pick so I asked the waitress what were the popular dishes and she asked, "Do you like spicy?" Does Lindsay Lohan miss court dates? ABSOLUTELY! She then recommended the beef and tendon noodle soup (sounds simple) $6.99 and the spicy, sweet chili chicken ($10). Done and done. The soup was fantastic, thick yellow noodles with tender beef brisket and tendon. The best part was the broth, it was filling, full of various flavors, I couldn't make it if I had their recipe. The chicken was great as well. Fully marinated with spicy flavors and cooked to the perfect soft and crispy texture. Loved it. I'd be back for one of both dishes or to try more. Most others were eating hot pot, so that may be tasty as well.

Came here after a late night movie next door, and let me simply say that this place serves the best spicy beef I ever had. Ordered medium spicy and in my opinion it was a little overwhelming, next time we will go for the mild. Their complimentary tea was nice and mellow, very good for a chilly night! We also ordered a salad for an appetizer that was also spicy but very good. The portions were good for the price for the spicy beef(19.99), we had left overs. We ordered a side of steak rice (1 dollar) and a side of shrimp fries rice (7.99). All their ingredients are fresh and cooked to order and you can keep your food warm by keeping it on table top warmer. Only complaint is that waiters know very little English , but hey that could be a great sign since you could tell that the food is authentic. This will definitely be my go to place for Chinese from now on!

The flavor is ok, honestly it's much below my expectation. The beer duck is full of beer, not spicy at all, and only like 5 pieces of duck. The corn soup is so salty. We also order a fish. That one is ok. The service is very poor, and the waitress seems like she doesn't give a shit. I won't go back.

Personally I am a huge fan of spicy food which is why this place got a 4 star rating from me. My friend and I went in and ordered three dishes, none of which was the General Pot, which ironically is the name of the restaurant. We ordered the Cumin Lamb, the La Zi Ji (spicy fried chicken wings) and a Fried Intestine Dish. The fried chicken was delicious as was the intestine dish. My only gripe is that the Cumin Lamb was a bit too strong. I usually love Cumin Lamb and have eaten this dish at quite a few restaurants and I think this place should try to balance out the dish a bit more. A suggestion would be to ask the waiter to ask the Chef to go lighter on this dish, otherwise it was cooked well and the flavor was good. The food took quite a bit of time to get to us and the prices were on the heftier side, understandable as they are located in the more expensive Pacific Commons Area of Fremont. They were always quick to refill the waters and the service was acceptable. I think I found a new place to eat spicy food in Fremont!

This place is literally a general pot. You pick a general pot, then you can add things into that pot. They cook it all up for you and bring it out and keep it warm on a portable stove. I like that they serve Beijing Yogurt here, and that they have free wi-fi that is decent. 5 stars because I left my iPad there and they were very honest and quickly informed me that I had left it behind. I really really really appreciate the honesty of the staff here.

I randomly sauntered into this Taiwanese hot pot restaurant on a late evening when not many other restaurants in this strip mall had open kitchens and were still serving dinner. A family-run restaurant, the food was simple, homestyle cookin'. We ordered: - vegetable fried rice: I was surprised they used a stickier rice for this fried rice dish. I didn't enjoy the consistency as much. The flavor was very basic and devoid of any soy sauce flavor reminescent of traditional fried rice. It was also speckled with a few veggies. - garlic eggplant: Melt in your mouth. Super delish. - spicy string beans: A bit chunky in appearance. Okay flavor, but I've definitely had had better varities of this simple dish. P.S. This place is a hot pot restaurant, so it probably makes sense to order hot pot here in the future, which is why I had a "meh" dining experience.

Where do I start? We ordered a plate of fried rice. One of six of us found a dead fly in the rice. Needless to say it is what it is and I wouldn't expect this to happen here in the US. Waitress came over, removed the dish and took it off the bill. When we were ready to go, she told us they were going to take 5% off the total bill. She came to get the tag and we had a Visa. She tells us they have to take back the 5% back if we don't have cash. REALLY?! We will not come back again.

For spicy fans? Yes. But, I will echo what others say, their portions are a little less than expected, or at least in the protein side. We ordered the beef stew dry pot, added lotus root and nothing else. But I guess if we added more stuff there would be more in the pot, but the beef was definitely hard to find.... Also, their fried rice, this one on the menu: "Fried Rice (with Eggs, Combination, Yangzhou Style".... IS NOT YANGZHOU STYLE AT ALL. It's the frozen package of peas and carrots, eggs, and then TINY pieces of SPAM. If the spam was at least a decent amount, I would brush it off, but not only is it NOT what it states "combination-WHAT?!" he tries to tell me it's a special "ham" AND be stingy with it. Honestly, will still try it again since it's not that bad, but definitely not paying $8 for a plate of soggy, no combination, spam fried rice. I will avoid their carbs, period.

Ordered beef, but I'm pretty sure I got a huge spicy pot of lotus root instead. We were the only customers there, so any judgement I make about service probably isn't too applicable. Awful selection of beer. Their dumplings are good!!

Beef! it's what's NOT in the pot. Ordered the beef spicy pot & really there's not much beef in it. The flavor is good & the food was spicy enough. Definitely all grease on the bottom just like how it should be but really not much substance. I'll still go back to try their other dishes but geeeezzz put the beef back will ya?

There is basically one thing on the menu; it is a kind of make your own stew. You select your meat(s) and/or seafood, veggies and how spicy you want. Then everything is brought to you in a wok (pretty much cooked), set down onto your own burner on the table. You bring the stew to a boil and eat. The sauce was soya based, everything tasted the same. Kind of different, but I probably will not come back often.

I've never had "pot" dishes quite like the kind from General Pot. I ordered the spicy beef pot with lotus flower and fish balls. The food came out in a large wok, which was set on top of a burner to keep warm. The flavors were pretty good and it was reasonably spicy for mild. My main complaint was that the food is VERY oily. I'm on a low carb diet so I didn't order any rice to go with it, which i feel like would have complimented the pot better. Since I didn't have anything to soak up the oil it kind of collected at the bottom of my plate making subsequent servings kind of unpleasant. If I go again, I'll probably stick to the non pot dishes.

Depending on what you are looking for this could be a place for you. The cuisine seems really geared towards a Northern style Chinese with hotpot as a main focus but this might be a little misleading since the not all the dishes are intensely flavored. The service was nice but a bit slow and the dishes I had, still has room for improvement,IMHO. E.g. Although the green onion pancake was crispy and hot, it was a bit under seasoned and the gluten was over developed or unrested, since it had a bit of chew. Which was similar to the other dishes I experienced but some people might like this.

We came here and had the mapo tofu and some pea sprouts. The pea sprout came with a lot of oil. The tofu was tasty, but it was waaaaayyyy too spicy. I realize you can adjust the spice level, but it would nice to know beforehand. I mean, I love spicy food, and I eat a lot of Korean and when I can get it, Szechuan. But the heat level in this tofu was downright painful to the point of nearly being inedible. As soon as it hits your tongue you start having regrets and wonder if you'll be able to stand more than a few mouthfuls. Didn't try their "hot pot" concept. Looks interesting.

I've never had anything like the food at General Pot before and it's great! What happens here (or what they seem to be known for) is that they have a dry pot of goodies (whatever you want in your pot) and they throw it all together. The concept is kind of like Taiwanese or Mongolian hot pot but a bit heavier because the food is more oily. DO NOT drink the soup because you definitely do not want to drink oil. Another difference between General Pot and hot pot is that you don't really need any sauces with the stir-fry in the pot. The mix that they cook the food in is strong enough. Oh yeah, and usually everything is cooked before it is put into the pot so don't worry about sanitary issues. As long as General Pot stays open, it will be one of my favorite Chinese comfort restaurants and I'll keep coming back (and maybe next time I'll try their regular dishes!) Who should come to General Pot? Anyone who loves spicy food. The spiciness reaches a new level (but you can choose). Some extra points for this place go toward the variety. You can choose from so many items to put in the pot. Negatives: General Pot can be a bit expensive but if you do decide to order their dry pots, you can share them with everyone at your table. Tip: My favorite things to add are the glass noodles!!

We ordered the frog pot. There are other meat selection like chicken, beef, etc etc. It came out of a hot wok and transferred onto a portable cook top. Meal included 2 bowls of rice & spicy/sour soup. You get to pick 2 side to add into your pot, such as bean sprouts, rice cake, beans, tofu, & more. The food is ok. Ok in terms of the quality, taste, portion, and pricing. Service was a bit on the low side..hopefully they pick things up a bit or perhaps hire 1 more server. Willing to go back and try again.

The whole concept of a pot of stir-fried-whatever on your table is just odd. The Spit Chicken (don't worry, not actually spit) was terrible. It was grainy and soggy and not at all fresh. The fried noodles were boring average noodles. The main pot was.. interesting. We added the spareribs, corn, some fish balls, and other veggies to it, but the combination of those with the spices are just so strange. The entire pot just tastes like peppers and chili, and on the good way. I love spicy food but this just only had lots of peppery taste and no spice taste. It was also very very oily. No idea, just didn't like it that much.

Lost, confused, and dejected on Father's Day (see preceding review), this was the only place that was quiet and without the crazy long lines at the other restaurants along this strip. Hot pot on a hot day didn't sound like fun, but there we were. Upon entry and even looking over the menu, we were still confused. The waitstaff informed us that it was a hot pot without soup - I think he cheerfully chirped, "first of its kind in the U.S.!" (Hmm, do we cook the food ourselves on the table - couldn't I just do that at home?) Basically, you pick different ingredients that they'll throw in a pot with varying degrees of spiciness. The burner at the center of the table is just to keep the food warm after they've cooked it for you. We selected some spare ribs, fish balls, tofu, lotus root, and greens with the med level of spiciness, along with two other veggie side dishes. The wok pot came out piping hot and nicely presented, with colorful greens and red chili peppers on top (although by the end of the meal, the pot became one big murky mess). Lo and behold, it tasted good, too, everything soaked up all the spicy flavors in the pot (we also found bean sprouts, mushrooms, and chunks of potatoes in the pot, which made the pot even heartier). The side dishes were a bit more bland, but were a good contrast to the bold flavors in the pot. Well, sometimes no or low expectations can lead to good things. More stars because the place was clean and service efficient. One more star because they salvaged Father's Day.

Great spicy crab dry pot! This is the dish we order all the time. All friends who came here were impressed as well. For the people who have bad reviews are either not authentic Chinese spicy food eaters or don't know what to order. I agree the fish dry pot is not the greatest. Try the crab. For crab order, you'd need to call them ahead of time to order it. Service is very nice, especially compared to other Chinese restaurants. ---Cheers.

I'm glad this place has lower ratings, because it ensures getting a table at dinner time on a Friday night! I'm so glad a restaurant like this opened up! I haven't had dry hot pot since I lived in China and I crave it a lot. But this restaurant is a lot more oily than the way they make in China. Nonetheless, it was awesome!!! My friend and I got the Chicken Wings General Pot. Each General Pot comes with sweet corn still on the cob (sliced up), celery, bean sprouts, lotus root, and potatoes, and we ordered mild. Since other reviews say the spiciest is truly spicy, I figured getting mild would just be spicy enough. It was perfect spicy for me, but then my friend said it was too spicy for her. I guess that conditioning living in China was helpful :)! Next time, I think I will just get the Not Spicy, because I have a feeling they just use the same spatulas or whatever, and some spice will still be left over, and make it spicy just enough. Aside from the one pot, you can add different stuff, just like hot pot ingredients. The waitress suggested since there was one two of us, just picking two extra side dishes each should make it more than enough. We went with shiitake mushrooms, seaweed, tofu skins... Maybe we only ordered three extras?... I wanted to get a cucumber appetizer that I haven't had since China either, to help offset the spiciness, but they were out of it :( General Pot + extras all get stir fried in a wok, then brought piping hot to your table and left on top of a burner, just like soupy hot pot, to warm at your table. They never did this in China, just brought it out, and it sat on the table. This Is one of the only restaurants I've been to since being back where they really use chilli flakes AND crack corns to really give it that more authentic mala () taste. Most Chinese restaurants here seem to be a little minimal on the chili flakes, and use jalapenos. We also ordered one bowl of rice and shared it. But maybe my friend should have just gottena bowl for herself because it was too spicy for her :D I got a glass of plum juice () for myslef. I swear, plum juice is the perfect match for spiciness (Chinese spicy). It had a thicker texture to it and reminded me of BBQ sauce, but I still enjoyed it. The kind I remember having in China had a lighter texture and more sweetness, more like a fruit juice. ... My mouth is watering just reminiscing the meal for this review! We couldn't finish it, so there were yummy yummy leftovers to take home! So happy! I don't know what spicy level the couple at the table next to ours got, but their faces were red when they walked out, and they didn't even drink alcohol! And on our other side, a lone woman got a whole pot for herself, ate what she could for one sitting, and brought the rest home. I would totally do that! I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to try the other stuff on their menu, seeing as that I'll always want a General Pot :) They have another full menu of other Sichuan/Hunan looking dishes, which I hope I'll get to try one day. Those who could not make it out to eat with us were quite jealous after we posted a picture of it. I can't wait to go back again!

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city.
