The CA Grill just keeps getting better and better all the time. For starters, the salad here is simply amazing. You won't find fresher lettuce anywhere! And the garden vegetables in the salad are so flavorful. I used to think that I did not like beets until I tasted the fresh roasted red & golden beets in this salad - divine! I have had 7-8 different entrees and they have all been stellar. Last night my husband & I went here for Valentine's Day dinner and had the most delicious Lobster with Polenta and FRESH steamed vegetables. Oh my! And about that polenta... it is over the moon delicious! Best ever, period. They recently remodeled the bathrooms - much nicer and very elegant. Other wonderful updates have been made as well. Beautiful new carpet. The lighting is now so warm and the new fixtures are a great improvement! Don't be misled by any of the old negative reviews - you won't regret coming here for any meal! Top notch!

We were there on November 13th for lunch - 6 of us.....great ambiance.....great service....good food. LARGE plates....PLUS you get soup or salad which comes with your meal - so beware! It was a lot of food - good food - good price. I would recommend it.

Had a great dinner & a wonderful experience on a Sunday evening at the California Grill of the Pajaro Valley under the new ownership of local farmer Dick Peixoto. This is the only restaurant in town that features exclusively local great wines, such as Alfaro, Cinnabar, Storrs, Pelican Ranch, etc (Cheers to that!)! We had some great appetizers that you cannot find anywhere else such as the "Grilled Castroville Artichokes" (from the Artichoke Capital of the World) and the salads are all superfresh and locally grown, especially all those organic salads (grown by the owner who also runs Lakeside Organics). The pasta ravioli was great as well and they provided some fresh-baked bread to enjoy with the olive oil and vinegar mix. This place has a great food entre selection and promoting locally grown food. More local restaurants should follow this example. Check out all the old historic photographs of the Pajaro Valley of local agriculture and its hardworking people. Price was a little high on some items, such as the 5-prawn cocktail for $9, but other items are really at a great price. Service was great with constant attention by our waitress. For group meeting, you can reserve their banquet room for only $15 an hour (when your group is NOT ordering food) or free when they are. You can't find that kind of price deal anywhere else in town, so book your group meetings at this place. I look forward to coming back and trying other items on the menu. If you want a taste of the Pajaro Valley or the Monterey Bay, this is a great place to tip your glass to.

$4 for a carrot.....ran out of their veggie of the month ? Really soggy noodles in a bowl of soup....so much for organic......Service spectacular!!

If you look any bad review if this place was from some time back, they have had a change of cooking staff some time ago. I have never had a bad meal here! The prime rib and au gratin potatoes are amazing. Side veg fresh and tasty. Wine glass is large and big pour. Top notch. !!

After reading the posted reviews is was hesitant to go to this place. I'm happy to say our group of 4 had a great experience. The staff were cordial/professiona. It was very nice of the owner(s) to drop by our table a couple times. 3 of us had the house burger & were all very pleased. Our salads were fresh and had more than enough. I'd go back any time.

Fresh and local organic food. The owner came by and explained where various veggies were sourced and offered menu suggestions. Food was very good and service attentive. House salad was ample and delicious. Salmon and ribs very good. This was a great find for this area. We will be back. What more can you ask for?

We were looking for a place with healthy food and this fit the bill!! I have tasty minestrone soup and a grilled artichoke. My homie had the spinach salad. He's a salad snob and he said that his salad was awesome. They also have a full bar and home made desserts.

Service is great. Atmosphere is ok. Quiet, but outdated. Breakfast is awesome. Huge portions and good coffee. Dinner was great. Ate calamari - super yummy! And a great salad. All ingredients are fresh- you can tell. LOVE that everything is from a local farm, or a local business.

What a surprise. This was one of the best resturants we have visited in a long time. Started off warm French bread. There are so few places where they warm the bread- so easy to do, but not done. The salads, included, were phemonal. All kinds of different lettuces, shredded red cabbage, and several other items I was not sure what they were but really good. The main dishes were excellant. Large portions with excellent sides, a starch and grilled vegatables. We were a party of 4 and everyone throughly enjoyed their entree. The grilled vegatables were the absolute best. The vegatables included boc choy, carrots, califlower, some root vegatable, broccoli, turnips, and a few others. Really fresh and grilled perfectly- not soft and mushy but slightly crunchy. I have never seen such a variety. The salad and vegetables are locally grown from the owner of the resturant. No room for dessert, but we saw some at another table and looked good. Prices are very reasonable. Most all the dinners $20 or less. Most other restaurants wound charge $7 for the salad alone and not come close to what we had included with dinner. They were completly full ,with people waiting ,yet service was good and attentive. Definitely will return.

Heard about this restaurant and was dying to try the fresh, organic food. Friends and I stopped in for a midday light meal. I ordered the shrimp appetizer and we all shared the fresh vegetable platter. The garlic bread was delicious!! The waitstaff was very helpful and friendly and the owner, Dick, was there to say hi to guests. I would recommend this family friendly restaurant. Delicious!

Most delicious food! We found this little gem on accident. They have several gluten free options for pasta and bread, which is hard to find. We had the blackened chicken Caesar salad and the baby back ribs. Then topped it off with the cheesecake and the flour less chocolate ganache. DELISH! Service was great, fast and friendly. This could be one our favorite restaurants ever!! We will be coming back.

I heard that California Grill changed their chef a while back. So it was time to try them again. I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few people in the restaurant for lunch. The other times it was fairly empty and quiet. The food was much better also. Although it's still a little pricey for me to go often, it's now worth its price.

2.5 stars because I don't see how very much has changed under the new ownership. Maybe the interior is a little less cluttered and has a new a fresh coat of paint. There is some nice stencilling on the walls and great pictures of Pajaro Valley people and businesses from the past. The menu looks pretty much unchanged except for a "healthy choice" section. Prices are a tad high imho: my turkey burger on a whole grain bun with baked sweet potato fries and a small side salad - the produce is definitely fresher tasting - was $13.00. Husband had the healthy club sandwich: 9 grain bread, sliced turkey, turkey bacon, lettuce, tomato, baked sweet potato fries and side salad, also for $13.00. Our waiter, Curtis, was fine. Refilled my iced tea a few times and brought us our check just fine. No real complaints. Will have to try going for breakfast to be fair.

Stop by for a 7:30pm Sunday late dinner (late by us country folk standards). Was "greeted" if you could call it that by my waiter as well. This young man has the charm of a snow cone in Phoenix! He wasn't overtly rude, but seem bothered he had to work this evening. After being seated he swiftly brought me my menu and a glass of water. About 3 minutes later he swiftly returned to take my order then hurried off to the kitchen. In all fairness he asked me matter of factly was water good for now or did I require another beverage. On to the food...since this was my first time here for a place that's been here for quite a few years I decided to play it safe and order "The Grill Burger" ($11.00) which came with a choice of their daily soup or house salad. I opted for the salad which my ever so swiftly waiter brought to me as soon as I unfolded the cloth napkin. Nicely done mix salad (check out the pic) consisting of red & green lettuce, fresh diced fresh beets, shredded carrots, nice chunk cuke, and sliced red onions. Good start...then hmmm...when my order came the round burger patty sat in the center of a clearly over-sized ciabatta roll. It also came with a healthy side of steak fries, green leaf lettuce, sliced tomatoes & red onions. My swifty waiter brought mustard & ketchup but NO MAYO! Sorry, this a must for any burger that I eat. You know the story and his M.O., he took off before I could request the mayo. The burger, cooked medium as I had requested was good, juicy and not fatty at all. Steak fries were nicely crisp accompaniment to the burger. But I was irritated having to maneuver the burger patty in that huge roll to get a bite of everything. Ultimately, most of the stuff had fallen out after each bite as my burger became smaller and everything else kept dumping on my plate. Big time annoyance! About half way through my meal, my waiter did swoop down quickly to check on me in his usual "cool" manner in a 3 second exchange. Now people have made comments on the décor and out dated ambiance. For me...it was meh...it's the burger man! Which I may add, was a tad bit overpriced unless it was "real" beef burger with its "organic" fillers? Also, message to the cook, you make a round hamburger use a round bun that fits! I like "square" burgers but make sure it fits the square ciabatta roll. The reputation of catering to a certain "clientele" is true since over 1/2 the patrons there when I arrived was just that. Meh, when I dine alone I tend to prefer "low key" and this place definitely fills the bill. Verdict ( 1 for dismal to 10 hell yeah) -Service: 7 (I'm being a tad generous for my "chill boy" waiter) -Food Quality/Taste: 8 -Atmosphere: 7 (quaint and quiet, just like grandma's) -Return Visit: 5

Under new ownership. My boyfriend and I came here with my family on Saturday night. Were from the city so were super foodies. I am a vegetarian and my boyfriend only eats chicken, so it can be hard to find good food when we go out. I had the pasta primavera with pesto and salad. Yum!! Super fresh and delicious salad with a variety of greens and organic balsamic vinegar, bread was fresh - came with butter and garlic. My boyfriend got the chicken and gnocchi and "had no complaints;" he is relatively hard to please. We had a new port for dessert and great service. This place is the first to serve all local food - meat from freedom meat lockers, local wines from corralitos to the sc mountains, organic vegetables from Lakeside Organic Gardens, pies from Gizdich Ranch. Delicious!! While I don't live here anymore, it's definitely nice to see a place like this in Watsonville.

Found on yelp and it was a great find! Portions were generous but kept high quality standards. Service was extremely attentive! When the salad was brought out and a comment was made we were excited that there were fresh beets, a huge bowl of beets was brought to the table to add to our salads. My sister ordered the scallop and polenta appetizer for dinner (with a soup) and it was DELICIOUS!!! Both sandwiches were good but HUGE (we have lunch tomorrow). What also impressed me is that the kids "fish sticks" were general fish and chips (much more elevated for the kids) with steak fries!!! Would definitely go back!

The "New" California Grill isn't somewhere I'll be going back to with my money. Not when I can have amazing food at Cafe Sparrow in Aptos for a few dollars more, where I'll get amazing food, great service, wine at a proper temperature, and sides as delicious as a main course. What I ordered at California Grill was the Freedom Meat Locker Wine and Spice Skirt Steak. This stuff is amazing, flavorful, and hard to mess up. I really enjoyed it... As I would if I would have picked it up myself and grilled it at home. And it might have been faster to do that. And I would have made better mashed potatoes with my fork and some sour cream. And there would be lots more skirt steak for another day. Choosing to serve Freedom's skirt steak is smart. There is nothing else redeeming about the California Grill. Our food took almost an hour to get to our table, and the place wasn't even half full. The bottle of Pinot Noir we ordered was warm, and our grilled artichoke came just minutes before our entree, was burnt, soggy, and cold. The aoli was good, though. Not a word about the long wait was mentioned to us, but the table behind, who sat down well after we ordered, got garlic bread as an apology for the wait and a visit from the owner, who they are friends with... Their food came the same time ours did, but neither of us has a very expedient service experience. So, along with the amazing skirt steak came mashed potatoes that could have been instant, but were described as "homemade", and over-steamed Carrots, Broccoli, and Cauliflower. Not at all what I expected, since the newspaper article billed them as a place focused on Fresh, Local Produce. Those veggies may have been local, but there was nothing special about them, and they were sadly cooked to a point beyond nutritious. My friend had a flavorless Rib Eye. Same terrible accompaniments. She wanted horseradish, but no one checked on us until it was way too late to be helpful. We could have asked, sure. We didn't, and shouldn't have had to flag anyone down to help us enjoy the $100 meal we were lamenting. We'll continue to go to The Nickel for obscenely large steaks, that taste better and cost less, and skirt steak that someone else didn't have to marinate. Plus, at least there you get some chocolate cake, too! California Grill, despite our hopeful wishing, is not a new bright spot in Watsonville. The re-vamp provided by the new owners just isn't enough to make a second try worthwhile.

This is based solely on the food because our waitress and the staff we very nice and attentive. The only things that were really good was the bread and the Old Fashion drinks were ordered....but they cost $9.25 each! Really, that's SF prices! The Deep fried artichoke hearts were dark brown and we sent them back. We received another batch which were slightly lighter but still we could tell they were cooked too long and in oil that was too hot. We sent those back, also. The wedge salad was just Ok,and the blue cheese dressing was disappointing...overall just tasteless. The cup of veggie soup tasted like canned veggies in a canned broth...not good. The chicken fried steak was something different all together and dry and tasteless. The veal piccata was breaded (wasn't expecting that), and on the tough side. The sauce was just Ok. Overall impression of their food.....bad. The worst was the manager in charge refused to take off the artichoke hearts that we sent back. That sealed it for us.....we will never go back.

*BREAKFAST* I was here a weekend ago, and actually had been wanting to come since I found out it was under new ownership and that all of the produce is sourced locally (there was a write-up in the paper on this place pretty recently). I am a very big breakfast person, but I am also picky in a health-conscious sense. So I was happy to see that they offer egg white or egg beater subs along with fruit instead of potatoes. I ended up going with scrambled egg whites with chicken sausage from Corralitos Market. They also give you a choice between toast, biscuit, eng. muffin, or a pancake. I tried the pancake because the pancake is a good measuring stick for breakfast joints IMO, and I was happy that they only offer you one, I can't eat more than that anyhow, but if you can, you can gladly order more. The boyfriend and I would always frequent Roger's Diner because it is simple and very fast, essentially it gets the job done. However, I will def be coming here more often because the quality of the ingredients they use, well, obviously superior. Plus it doesn't hurt that I can grab a Starbuck's coffee, then walk over for a good breakfast!

EDIT: UPDATE. Someone contacted me from the restaurant to let me know this waitress no longer works there. Thank you for the mssg, i have not been back to try them again but will if the opportunity arises. so walked in Thursday afternoon and the waitress was very rude and acted like it was a hassle to seat us and stop reading her book. Then when she came to take our drink order she actually had a mcdonalds latte in her hand. We decided to leave as we were obviously unwelcome and after saying we changed are minds she said "ok good". What the heck. This was my first attempt to eat there. I am only posting this in hope the manager or owner reads this.

Whether its sandwiches, salad, seafood steak or pasta this place has the goods. All fresh organic produce too! Locally purchased meat, and there's always something tasty on the specials board! Breakfast lunch or dinner, this is one of the best restaurants in the South county area! I particularly recommend the Skirt Steak Salad, the French Dip, and the garlic bread! Don't miss out, not just an average diner!

I'm really shocked at the ratings I have been going there for quite sometime and have been very happy with the food and the service. There has been a big improvement in the menu and the food presentation since the new owners took over a little over a year ago. Everything is fresh & locally grown and the service is very good. I don't get there as much as i would like, i can honestly say i have always enjoyed everything, The food is now amazing. When the new owners or staff, ask you, "how is everything?" They really want to know. A small group of my friends come there to celebrate our birthdays and always have a wonderful dinner and service. My recent birthday they reserved the new banquet room. Surprised me with few more friends, few balloons, few glasses of local wine, Outstanding food & topped off with Creme Burlee!!! Does it get better than that? 6 stars! THIS WAS COPiED Via FB from my Mommie Georgia Sarmento

Went there for breakfast this morning. Had the eggs beni . Wasn't as good as other dishes I've had there (for the price, I expected much more flavor), it was quite bland, and even cold, especially the home potatoes, odd that they were already cold, it was only 8:00am on a Sunday morning. My husband had the Huevos Rancheros, he really enjoyed them. He asked the waitress to have the cook shred jalapeño on top. She said no, they come sliced. Seemed quite rude about it too. The busboy and hostess were very polite. The owner comes around and asks how everything is. We didn't want to say anything though (we should have, but didn't). Our experience there today was not as good as it has been in the past.

Just tried the California Grill Restaurant Saturday night; what a lovely find! The vegetables were fresh, both in salad and soup. The skirt steak was very tender and tasty...cooked just as ordered. The au gratin potatoes were favorful with the cheese on top melted and toasted. Lobster tails were one of the night's specials. I had these and hope to order these again when they have them on the menu. The staff was friendly and servers were attentive. I missed getting to have the olallieberry pie by a slice as they had just run out by the time we were thinking about desert. Not surprising as they had a full house and a short wait for seating. So maybe, I'll just have desert first next time! Glenda P.

Decent breakfast but bizarre, inflexible and ultimately off-putting pricing policies. Had breakfast with a friend who wasn't too hungry and quite frankly is about the size of a child. But no, wasn't allowed to order the Child's Plate (Cowboy Corner Cafe has no problem with this, btw). Despite querying it we were told "those are the rules". Umm, OK. Instead our server suggested ordering sides to the equivalent -- which works out to be about $9; more than a regular breakfast. "OK, well never mind, we'll share mine" and I order. So they'd rather apparently rather enforce rules and make no income than accommodate a customer. My breakfast (pancakes, eggs, bacon) arrives... only one plate. We ask for another plate. Oh the irony it was child-sized! So we're left serving ourselves on to this small plate. Not to worry, at least the breakfast is pretty good. But then... $2 sharing charge! At a diner! Is that just me or is that kinda weird? You know, fair enough, if that's what you wanna do, but at least present the meal on two plates and don't make your customers ask twice for the plate and then serve themselves. Won't be back.

I'm super disappointed that I have to lower my rating to 2 stars! I was hopeful once the ownership changed, but after several months of loyal service and continually having some sort of negative experience I had to lower my rating! (previous review was for old owner). The pros: Great Hamburger (from old menu),coffee, and a few nice, on top of it waitstaff. The cons: -The balance of the waitstaff is rude, rude, rude! -Food hasn't been consistent lately. -The establishment seems to be more into catering in their banquet room than taking care of the diners on their main floor. -Overly uneatable cornbeef sandwich (too salty, even for salt lovers). -Hair in food (happened once). -Gnats in Broccoli (happened once- different occasion). -Sand or dirt in salad (multiple times...need to rinse lettuce more). -Moldy bread (happened once). Above all this I was still willing to go back because I wanted to see this business succeed for food variety sake. However, when I recently went there for a gathering with 4 other people, the new waitress kept rolling her eyes whenever we asked for simple things, like water, bread, utensils, and napkins. Mind you that we were the only table in the restaurant --we were there between lunch and dinner. When I walked over to talk to the owner to request a different waitperson, the owner assured me she would handle us instead. I told the owner, I didn't enjoy having a frown faced waitress, if I want to be bummed out I'll watch a sad movie, I don't need grief when I'm paying for food and service. The owner, didn't take over our table...if I wasn't w/ two people who were incredibly hungry I would have left! I was disappointed w/ the owner not caring about me or my guests experience. I won't be returning here any time soon!

Yesterday, I returned to the California Grill in Watsonville for lunch and once again their special salad was a salmon filet salad. This time it was served with artichokes, blue cheese crumbles, olives, and one of their specialties - heirloom tomatoes. I could eat a whole plate of just the tomatoes they are so sweet and fresh off the vine. I think Dick should be ashamed to serve those tomatoes - they are so delicious they make every other restaurant in town look bad! The service, as usual, was excellent, the salad was beautiful and tasty and it was served with a basket of warm bread straight from the oven. I never mind if I have to wait for the bread because I know it will arrive warm. The City is so very fortunate to have this restaurant that has great service, delicious food, and a trained and very friendly staff. In addition, they have a community conscience and recently had a big fund-raiser in support of children's cancer research. Keep up the good work, California Grill!

Pros: 1) Artichokes Deep Fried = Goodness 2) Minestrone Soup was not horrible compared to the rest of the meal. ***Can being "not horrible" actually count as a pro????? Cons: 1) The water given to us tasted like it had come from the kitchens rinse station. 2) The spaghetti and meat ball dish delivered to our table was gross....in the way that the sauce had undertones of being burnt on the stove for hours and the meatballs were crumbly, airy and lacked flavor (or at least enough flavor to counter act the sauce).... WHEN IT COMES TO SPAGHETTI THE SAUCE IS EVERYTHING!!!! Do they not taste test their sauces before they serve them? It should not have been smokey or burnt or have had the appearance that it had been skimmed from the top of the pot, void of any chunky substance or positive flavor. 3) The steak sand-which was not properly sized for the bread (way too small of steak) and in all truth the only reason I ate it was because I had A1 sauce which made it taste good. The steak itself lacked any seasoning or flavor. This plate also came with fries, perhaps fifteen fries, hardly any really and they were luke warm at best. Conclusion: $40 for two dozen nickel sized fried artichokes parts, fifteen substandard french fries, a 'not horrible' cup of minestrone soup, a undersized steak sandwich which lacked flavor beyond copious amounts of "A-1" sauce, a plate full of the most disgusting spaghetti and meatballs which could ever assault the five senses and four glasses of dish water plus a 15% tip (instead of 20%) because I had to listen to the waitress talk on the phone during the whole meal comes out to about forty six very poorly spent dollars. Never again will I eat in Freedom, Watsonville or any of the areas near that place....I obviously can't trust the local reviews which have given everything a 4 or 5 star rating.....The only reason we came here was because every thing else besides fast food had been closed after 3:00 PM.

I can only speak to the salads, but they are awesome. I know my produce and this is good stuff. Perfect beets on a mix of quality greens. Add grilled skirt steak, what could be better? My experience is that the staff is attentive and friendly

A friend took hubby and I for lunch at this place. It's a nice quaint restaurant with an average price to the dishes. I do have to highly recommend the french dip. The bread was VERY light and crunchy and Au Jus was perfect for my taste; it wasn't watery or to salty. We had a VERY nice lunch. But don't go to the bathroom unless it's an emergency. It was like entering a truck stop. I can say I'll come back to this place again to try the other items on the menu, if they're as good as the french dip (only to eat).

I live in the local area and probably will not go back. As someone with an Italian heritage, I find this restaurant embarrassing to my culture. Wife and I had dinner. I was not very hungry and decided to go with minestrone soup and salad. Wife went for the mixed meat cannelloni, which California grill claims they make from scratch. My minestrone soup tasted burnt, like they used a old pot and had it sit on a heating pad for days on end without cleaning it. The soup you could tell was either from a can or had been cooking for days, the veggies were like mush. If it did not have the burnt smell it may have been edible for a homeless person but certainly not for a paying customer. I sent the soup back and got a bowl of clam chowder instead. The clam chowder was lukewarm, very thick (evident a thicker was used), quite a few clams though. It was ok but not a chowder I prefer. My wife's cannelloni was edible but certainly I've had much better. The cannelloni filling is suppose to have a small amount ricotta cheese with the meat but there was absolutely none. The meat sauce on top was not absolutely terrible but frankly did not seem much better than canned sauce (e.g. rague). What threw me was the ton of low grade cheese tossed on top of the cannelloni and melted in place. It was very greasy. But if you like lots of cheese on top of pasta, you might like this. The cost of our meal was around $35 which I though was far too high for the food we had, especially considering the quality was not very good and that we had no wine or beer (just ice tea). I give good marks to the service. Although there was only one server working and she was clearly very busy, she did keep everything moving along with an attentive busboy. The owner was there but mostly just walked back/forth between the kitchen and cash register. He didn't even bother to say hi or check in.

What a great place for a wonderful meal! The Peixoto family has done a great job in creating a menu for all to enjoy as well as supporting other local businesses. They now have new cooks (from the former Green Valley Grill), awesome staff, historical photos of the Pajaro Valley, framed and displayed, that will take many down memory lane and so much more. Our family have always enjoyed the meals that we have ordered and look forward to visiting often.

went to try it a couple of times just to get an feel of the place.first was breakfast on a sunday morning, felt like a time warp or an episode of twilight zone when we walked in.i guess its a favorite spot for seniors which didnt really bother us at all since our goal there was breakfast :) food was ok,could be better, and maybe reflect pricing with the amount/quality of food youre getting.service was ok but took long at times.second time we came back was for lunch which actually was more pleasant.service was good and always around checking up on you.but still the same issue with food quality was hit/miss.i would probably come back here as my last option since there are other restaurants in the area which is more consistent and i would say give you more value for your money.

My husband and I had an unexpected wonderful dinner at the California Grill this evening. We had gone by this restaurant many times before and because it looked like a diner we never had wanted to try it, thinking it might not be good. Tonight was different. We decided to venture in and we are so glad we did. The food was f a n t a s t i c. The hostess was very gracious and our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. She provided us with very good and prompt service. The restaurant is very clean. We did not use the restrooms so I can speak of that, but judging from what we saw in the restaurant, I have no doubt that they would be clean. In the middle of our dinner we were greeted by one of the owners, Dick Peixoto. He stopped at our table to introduce himself and ask about our experience at his restaurant. Very hands on. He told us about all the fresh and organic ingredients that he and his family grow themselves at the Lakeside Organic Gardens. Tonight I had the skirt steak with polenta and lentil soup; my husband had the rib eye steak also with polenta and an unbelievable fresh salad. Both dinners were served with fresh organic vegetables (so good!). Both steaks were out of this world! They also have a variety of desserts which we did not try as we were very full. Oh and before dinner, they gave us a basket of bread (very fresh, soft and yummy) served with butter and also at the table there was olive oil and vinegar, if you wanted it. The next time I will try a pasta dish as they told me that their pastas are cooked to order, not precooked, so I can have it al dente, just the way I like it. I hope this restaurant stays true to itself for a long, long time and that the fabulous cook has found a permanent kitchen in the California Grill Restaurant. Go and enjoy it... you won't regret it!

I have eaten at most Watsonville restaurants that aren't a taqueria(hard to find good food outside a burrito in this town). I saw a commercial on tv/radio touting the local nature of the cuisine, local new ownership, etc., so I had to try. I walk into a nearly empty restaurant(never a good sign to me) at 1pm for lunch. I peruse the menu and decided that the burger that looked appealing was too much money(ill goto the nickle for a burger, cheaper too!), I was really in the mood for a good meal, I decided on the pricey fettuchini alfredo with chicken. $14.95, plus an arnold palmer for a wet follow-up. The waitress' argued over how long I sat there ready to order. Side salad was a "side-salad" nothing to write home about, then the bowl of alfredo showed up with hardly any noodles present, they were under sauce, the chicken atop was very plain without much seasoning, the noodles were huge and wouldn't stay on the fork provided and splashed the scolding hot runny alfredo all over the table, my shirt, and my glasses. I wasn't happy, ate the chicken, left the runny alfredo soup behind along with my $20 bill and a "that was horrible alfredo" to the waitress. Just a "sorry" reply. Not going back! 2 stars is being nice!

Went there looking for a good breakfast in a short time as I had work in an hour. They sat and took our order quickly, however the food took over 45 min to get there so we had to take it to go, so don't come here if you are in a rush. I thought it was a very nice sit down restaurant, it had a better vibe than expected based on the reviews. The "bomb burger" was amazing. It's a messy burger to eat because the bread was too thin to support all the juicy goodness. They put a good amount of avocado and sauteed mushrooms and onions. Soooooo goood. My burger came with a roasted corn chowder that was so rich, warm and creamy, that I would go back there just to order that. My boyfriend got the "Ranch omelet" and commented that it was better than he expected. However, the country style potatoes it came with were plain and old tasting. Overall, I am surprised they can pull off making a lot of decent dishes with the variety they offer. Will definitely come back to try something else.

We have been attending your place for the last few years, and we are so grateful for the remodel. For the most part we have received excellent service from the twins. Unfortunately we usually enjoy an early dinner and 9 times out of 10 no one can make a cocktail. Once or twice a twin would make us a top shelf margarita but most of the time servers are un-empowered and confess... "the bartender will be here soon..." As much as "mixologists" like to make their craft mysterious, any competent server can be trained to make a basic cocktail. I really appreciate the owner stopping by to connect with the guests, but as soon as he passes by, it takes forever to get food from the kitchen. I understand it takes time to shift the kitchen prep from breakfast/lunch to dinner, but perhaps servers can alert the guests to this necessity and/or fire their tickets expeditiously? Once my dusky partner inquired "Will you ever offer chicken wings?" Our server (not a twin) snapped, "Oh no sir! We're a FANCY restaurant and we will never do that!" We only inquired because they offer so many fried items and we wondered what do they do with the rest of the chicken! For a server to humiliate his guest and insinuate that they are a complete hillbilly fool was hurtful, especially when we like to order UP in the early evening. Sensitivity training anyone??

My family ate here again on 5/4/15. The California Grill has become the place our family members want to eat at for birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions. We tried a couple of new things. My husband had the Filet Mignon, and it literally melted in your mouth after 2 or 3 bites. His parents tried the Teriyaki Chicken and really liked it. They said the chicken was very tender as well. I've seen some complaints about service, but we have only experienced good service at CG, we never even have to ask for a drink refill. We always seem to get the same server, which is odd since she says she doesn't work every day. I wish I could remember her name so I could give her a thumbs up here. She's very good at her job.

Let me start by saying that I really like their clam chowder... This is a good restaurant. They have many salads, some if not all are organic which is very nice to know. I had their half soup and half sandwich when I went and it was a great deal. The food was really good. Service was great. Now I know where to get clam chowder in Watsonville.

I noticed that some of the not so positive reviews are coming from wayyyyyy before all the improvements and renovation! This place has come a loooong way from where it was 4 years ago and HAS an awesome kitchen crew that never fails to put out excellent plates of amazing food ! I ALWAYS leave with a great dining experience and it is BY FAR , THE NICEST place to dine in the Pajaro Valley !!!

This place is expensive. Organic salad was big and mostly tasty, but cuts of vegetables were huge. Arrived at 4 and asked if they still had the portabello sandwich but was told that was on the lunch menu. Ingredients were still probably in the kitchen but okay. Service was prompt and friendly enough. Not enough vegetarian choices that arent pasta slathered in cheese (and definitely not for 18 bucks). Okay, but not enough for a second visit.

Been about a year since I've last visited this place. Went today (9/11/15) and saw they remodeled the place. Thumbs up for that! However, my dining partner and I didn't have a good experience. We went during late lunch (3:30) and it was very slow. Less than 7 people in the restaurant including staff. We had somewhere to be at 4:30 so we asked the waiter if it would take long to get our order in. He said no since it was a really slow time. Waiter forgot to put ticket in. Says "for some reason the ticket didn't go through." WHOSE FAULT IS THAT?! You see us sitting there with our drinks and a small salad for a good 40 mins and don't question where our order is? The quality of our pasta was underwhelming. Not worth what we paid. My friend and I said we won't be coming back. I remember this place in the early 2000s, I was a fan. Not today though. I would recommend elsewhere if possible. **also I should add that last time we visited my dining partner ordered a great vegan pasta she was wanting to order again today (this is actually the reason we came).. But since then they changed the menu and now have very minimal vegan options. Just a heads up for any vegans out there!

California Grill has that vintage charm that I haven't seen in a while. Located at the corner of a large shopping plaza, parking is easily accessible. My friend and I came here around 1:30PM and thankfully they were still serving breakfast! I ordered the Spanish omelette with country potatoes and whole wheat toast. My friend ordered the California omelette. Both were $11. Spanish omelette: a little bit on the greasy side because of all of the melted cheese on top but it was still delicious Country potatoes: nothing special but compliment the omelette well! California: Also slightly greasy because of all the cheese but delicious Overall, there's nothing spectacular about this place but I would recommend it if you're in the area. It has classic diner food for an affordable price.

Solid food! A wide range of options available, from the artery clogging to the ultra healthy. The ambiance is diner chic, which is a little weird. But, friendly staff, flexible menu/chefs, and ultimately a satisfying meal. It says that they get vegetables locally and organically when possible, which I appreciate. Salmon salad is great.

Delicious salads. I am always on the lookout for a salad that is a little more then the typical iceberg, Caesar or standard mixed greens. California Grill far exceeded my expectations and honesty it might be my favorite salad in the county now. Looking at the menu prices it seemed a bit much at first, but don't be deterred, it may not look like it inside, but the food is worth every penny and you won't go home hungry.

Cali Grill is my absolute favorite place to eat in Watsonville! I literally CRAVE their salads! So fresh and guilt free! I just wish they delivered so I could eat their food basically everyday that I'm stuck at work lol! I also love that the owners go around to tables to greet customers and ask how everything is....no other restaurant I've been to does that. It's nice :)

California Grill looks very unassuming on the outside but the food is incredible! I've had the pleasure of dining here twice and both times the food and service was awesome. Last week I ordered the Mary's organic chicken special with lemon and garlic sauce and it was seriously the best chicken I've ever had and I've eaten at a ton of restaurants. It was also large enough to be shared but I finished it all. I also tried a mahi dish on a prior visit and that was extremely flavorful with a delicious mango salsa on top. I've never had their breakfasts or desserts but I'm sure they are just as good. If I lived closer I would come every week. I have no idea why the reviews are not 5 star across the board here.

This is my second time I have been to this place and it's even better Than last time!! Gave 4 stars last time but this time they deserve 5!! I got the "Bomb Burger" arguably the best burger I had in a hell of a long time. Service was great like last time Highly recommend. I can't believe that "Rodgers" of all places got 4+ stars and this place got just over 3!! Rodgers deserves 2 stars at best and this place should be a SOLID 4 STARS!

We were on vacation and were completely unfamiliar with this part of Ca. Were staying in a Comfort Inn, close by and the desk clerk reccommended California Grill. It was dinner and also my husband's birthday so we checked it out. Lesson:NEVER judge a book by it's cover. On the outside, this is a place I normally would not think about going to, but the food was truly exceptional, and we both are foodies. We both had the roasted veggie polenta lasagna and it was out of this world delicious!!! The man who grows the organic veggies was there and was chatting us up telling us about the restaurant and his growing business. The food was so good, along with the service, that we returned the next day for breakfast and were just as pleased. Just go and check out this place, it is really what dining out should be.

An unassuming place with very reasonable prices, efficient service, and delicious food! I've eaten there more than a dozen times, and had only one sub-par dining experience. I've tried my following favorites more than once: the lamb shank, the pasta primavera, and the cannelloni--all pleasantly satisfying, and with substantial portions. The salads are organic and always fresh, and the seasonal beets are especially colorful and tasty. The atmosphere is plain, the view of mini mall parking lots won't thrill you, and an older crowd that dines between 4:00 and 6:00 can create a low-energy vibe. But you want excellent food at prices that are easy on the wallet--right? Eat here before the current owners take their talents to upscale and more expensive neighborhoods!

For Watsonville, it is a nice place. Decent restaurant in a strip mall. Prices to me felt on the high side for the ambiance, such that it was. I thought it was weird that there was no background music here whatsoever. Not even generic muzak! The entrees are huge portions and are good... steak salad for mom was good and my pasta dish was cooked well and was tasty. Service is a little bit slow and you have to ask for everything. Some training on anticipating diners' needs might help this young-ish staff.

This place is decent. It has plenty of options which makes it hard to choose what to eat when you're hungry. But whatever you order, you'll be content. The lack of stars is from our experience with our server. Our large party had a large order. Our server must have forgotten to place one order because his meal came out practically as we were done eating. On the plus side, the owner of the restaurant came by to see how we were. But nothing was done of the serious delay of the food.

The last time I ate here was over 9 years ago. There was a reason for that..... I recently saw in our local paper that the owners had changed and they were serving fresh fruits and veggies from local farms and meat from our local meat locker. I went tonight for the first time under the new owners for a birthday dinner, party of 6, unannounced. (Monday night at 5:20 pm) There were only two other tables with customers. We sat at a very clean and large table. Our server was friendly and awesome and funny. Four of us ordered the chicken fried steak, baked potatoes and salad. Another member of our party ordered the chicken pesto pasta dish, I'm sorry I can't remember the proper name but it sure looked good. Our 6th member of our party was my 7 year old picky eater and she chose the chicken strips and fries. Also while we waited, we were served warm bread they brought us bread, butter and garlic to mix with their balsamic vinegar and oil. That was a treat and I haven't had that in so long! Our salads arrived and they were fresh and the produce used were awesome. Big helpings on the salad, big cuts of tomatoes, cucumbers, and small diced beets which I thought were small diced tomatoes...they were delicious in the salad and the dressing used was perfect I got Caesar. The food arrived and the portions for the chicken fried steak were very large, all three of us also ordered the country style gravy. OH MY GOSH!!!! That was insanely good!!! No, EXTREMELY GOOD!!!!!!!! The chicken fried steak was extremely tender and had a great flavor. My baked potato and mixed veggies were awesome. Everyone was so thrilled with their dinner. $16.99 for the chicken fried steak and it was a lot of food! I was thinking about this while we were eating.... This is THE BEST RESTAURANT IN WATSONVILLE, HANDS DOWN. The service, the food, the cleanliness, the portions sizes. We are so excited to go back and try their breakfast. I'm so glad we decided to try this gem out with the new management. What a great local spot!!!!

The food is great for taste, but an inch worm I the salad and closing the desert with a cockroach on the wall. Hmm they don't come out unless there is no more room under the fridge. Sorry there was hardly anyone there and we got slow service. 2 kids 3 adults $150.00 price is high for extra protein.

I've eaten here a few times and each time is better than the previous. The salads are fresh and tasty and can be a meal in their own. The food is just as fresh and equally as tasty. You can't go wrong when the owner/farmer greets each guest at their table. Nothing like local grown food.

Once I heard that the owner of Lakeside Organic Farms had opened a restaurant, I couldn't wait to try it! I was EXTREMELY disappointed. We went for breakfast and it's a cute place but that's about all it has going for it. We ordered coffee and it was very weak and not of quality. We ordered our food and it took FOREVER. The waitress was very nice and brought us out fruit on the house because it was taking so long. I was still hopeful that my food would be good. I ordered pancakes with MAPLE SYRUP and scrambled eggs and my husband ordered eggs and country potatoes. Pretty sure the pancakes were from those big bisquick bags at Costco (or whatever it's called) and the maple syrup they promised came in two square packets labeled "pancake syrup"...first ingredient, corn syrup. Instead of bringing my husband country potatoes they gave him hashbrowns. We just moved to the area and I was so hoping this would be our cute little Sunday morning breakfast place...I guess we better keep looking. You would think that a family that owns organic farms would care more about the quality of their food.

Been going here from beginning and here's the deal. The food is decent. Breakfast is not their strongest meal. Lunch and dinner are more their specialties. The service is what will stop me from going again though. Couple months ago I swore I wouldn't return after waitress sneezed on food, wiped her soiled hand on apron and continued to serve patrons. We left immediately without ordering. Today my family wanted to go so I reluctantly went. This mornings waitress was abrupt and not accommodating to requests. Then she literally man handled my sisters English muffin in attempt to see if there was butter on it. Who picks up a customers food item and moves it from hand to hand and close to her face and then puts it back on the plate in front of the customer? The owner has a couple of good staff members, but if he wants customers to return I think he needs some new, more professional, waitresses/waiters. At least this is the consensus of all the conversations I have about the place.

Great place to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have a great selection of entrees to choose from. Best dessert is the Pajaro Pie!! They serve beer and wine. I like the fact that the owner of Lakeside stops by and checks in with each table to see how everything is. It is also great that they support local programs in which they donate all the proceeds. Ive always had great service here and will continue to support this local restaurant.

This restaurant is such a wonderful surprise ! The food and the staff are great ! Curtis was our waiter and he was awesome and such a friendly guy ! We were the last customers to walk in and they didn't make us feel rushed or unwelcome .We were a party of four and each one of our dishes were fresh and delicious !! Such a great go to place from now on ! Thank you Curtis

Recently tried for the first time. It was pretty good. Really liked the crab cakes. I liked the seafood fettuccine alfredo I ordered but the sauce could have been just a bit thicker. Too watery so it just dripped off the pasta and seafood.. bummer. But the scallops and polenta.. delicious. Definitely going back some time soon.

I have been dying to go to this restaurant ever since I heard the cooks/chef from GVG moved here when that one closed. I finally managed to wrangle up my family and all 6 of us when there, you can imagine my delight when I saw my GVG fav, "halibut with avo salsa" on the dinner menu!!!....and then thats where the excitment ended :( They brought out bread (should have been warmed up preferably), butter, garlic, olive oil & vinegar. Awesome right? Excpet for the garlic.... what resturants boasts that they use local procduce from local farmers and they are there for the Pajaro Valley and then they use STORE BOUGHT garlic...from a jar! Seriouly dissapointed that they couldn't manage to travel over Mt Madonna where we have ...um...the like garlic capitol of Gilroy and pick up a few bulbs. My ever-so-longed-for halibut was so chewy and overcooked I forced it down due to past memories of deliciousness. My husbands' steak was overdone as well and he had a hard time cutting it nevertheless chewing it. My sisters' veggies were so over cooked that she couldn't pick them up with a fork (they disintegrated) and after using a spoon decided it wasn't worth it to spoon up baby food veggies. One of the worst parts was the service from the waiter. Here are the TOTAL words of the night: "You guys ready to order?"" "ok-got it" "everything ok?" "here's your bill" For a meal over $150 dollars it would be nice to get, oh I don't know... lets try some of these: "Hi, my name is _____. Welcome to CGofPV" "the dinner speacials are._____" "how's everyone doing tonight?" "can I get you anything else?" "Dessert?" "Thank you for coming in tonight" etc etc The 'bus boy' was awesome, friendly and very prompt in attention and tried to salvage his rude counterpart and in the end I just wanted to slip him the tip but my family said I had to leave with the rest of the bill and hope they split it. The restaurante decor and seating was nice tho. Overall dissapointed :(

Well, wife and I came back to try this restaurant again. We had such a bad experience the last time, we had reservations about trying it again. To our surprise, the food was the best we have had in a long time, my wife had chicken fried steak; it was a big piece of meat that was really tasty and filling. I ordered a skirt steak sandwich that was cooked to perfection, I had the French fries replaced with onion rings and they were heavenly, along with that I had a artichoke brisque and I definitely would go back just for the soup, it was that good! My son had a floritini eggs Benedict that was out of this world with mushrooms, spinach and pork loin. Yum yum yum Will I go back, you bet!

Good food for the Pajaro area. We enjoyed wine with dinner and a brandy with dessert. Person I was with had a delightful fresh salad (very good) with lots of great vegetables, including beets; and loved loved loved his roast beef with tasty polenta. I had the shrimp louie and it was quite tasty. For dessert we enjoyed Pajaro pie (ice cream in an oreo crust). Interesting historic pictures from the Pajaro area on the wall. Friendly place.....and friendly service. There was a mix of first timers and several local couples and groups who come regularly. Relaxed setting with great food. Parking is in a free lot by the restaurant. We made our reservations on Open Table.

Food is really good, but service is lacking. Came, with reservations for Mother's Day. Waited 40 min to ORDER. Asked 5 different people for a high chair only to have them never return. Owner? Came and offered us apps for the long wait which was nice but we had to ask for coffee, water, drinks repeatedly before we'd get them. Spent 2.5 hrs there waiting to order then for food. Servers seemed inexperienced and flustered. Way understaffed for a day they had no reservations left for. There is so much potential- sad it's falling short. Was here previously as the ONLY table full, and aloof, unfriendly server made us feel unwelcome but again- great food.

If you like clean organic vegetables picked today, go to California Grill, at Airport and Freedom blvd in Watsonville/Freedom, CA. I love the fresh, alive food that tastes better than anywhere else, and the new waitstaff, who are pleasant and more than willing to answer questions. My favorite is the steamed vegetable salad with grilled prawns -perfectly prepared with tender-crisp vegetables, and sweet, tasty prawns. It is found in the low-calorie section of the menu. Delicious!

I have lived in the Freedom area for 4 years and found out about a year ago that this restaurant was purchased by local organic farmer Dick Peixioto and have been looking forward to trying it. Not much to look at from the outside, still looks like the diner that was there before it. Hard to expect much from a strip mall as far as outside decor. When we walked in I was happy to see swordfish on the specials menu and ended up ordering that which came blackened (perfectly) with a orange glaze with a pineapple salsa and was cooked to perfection. The salad that preceded the entree was nothing short of awesome. You could taste the freshness of the produce and it had red and yellow tomatoes and beets. The vegetables were steamed to perfection and the au gratin potatoes were to die for. The bread, while not warm as I read someone complained about, was fresh. My wife had the pork chop special which she loved. It came with two large chops and she said she would have been happy with the sauce and potatoes only. Definitely some of the best food I have had in Santa Cruz Co.

This was my first time at California grill, and I've heard nothing but good things about it so had to finally go try it out. The food was pretty good and had so many great choices was just hard to choose what I wanted. The place was fresh looking, nice carpet that had great design and flow. Our waitress too was so nice and friendly! Over all was a pretty good place! I have to go back for breakfast next because heard it was good :-)

DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! My family went there for lunch and we found a LIVE wiggly caterpillar in our hamburger! It was so gross! And the Assistant Manager acted like it was no big deal. I'm not even sure if she told anyone about it. Talk about terrible service. Now, if I owned a restaurant and someone found a live worm in my food I would have comped the whole ticket, apologized profusely and offered a free voucher or something for a future meal. Did we get any of that??? NOPE! The only thing they comped was the hamburger and that's it and sent us on our way. Obviously, this place doesn't give a crap about quality service or quality food. If you read earlier reviews, you'll see that this isn't the first time someone has found a bug in their food. That's just shameful. Save yourself the time and money and go somewhere else.

Just had dinner at the California Grill. We're from the bay area and in town on vacation. The side salad was among the best we have EVER had. Great balance of fresh and yummy veggies with salad. The rest of our meal was pretty good (hence less than 5 stars). Would go again!

We love this place. This is our first visit since Paul and Neely left. All I can say is EVERYTHING was outstanding. We will go back soon. My husband ordered the scallops, and his only complaint was there wasn't enough. I had the halibut, which was a thinly sliced filet, but outstanding. No room for dessert. We were pleased to see local wineries offered on the menu. Good job! We will be back.
