I stopped by for lunch today since this was next to my brother's office and I must say I was incredibly surprised. I had never heard of the place and solely walked in based on convenience. Initially I was skeptical of the establishment, since I had never heard of this place before, but quickly lost all reservations once my meal began. The restaurant had a fairly simple decor with some good rock/alternative music playing an appropriate volume (I believe Sublime was on when I walked first walking inside). When I arrived I asked to sit at the bar. Chef Hiro inquired if I wanted Omakase and I told him that would be fine. I enjoyed the fact that as people came in to pick up Togo orders or returned for another visit, Chef Hiro remembered them addressing them by name. While he made me sushi we had a nice discussion on the history of sushi and what his standards/goals were for his establishment. For the fish: I had Halibut, Red Snapper, Kama-toro, King crab, Scallops, Mussels, King Prawns, and Amberjack. Every fish in and of itself was incredibly fresh and Chef Hiro would tell me the location of each fish. Every piece of fish was balanced very well with sauces that Chef Hiro creates. Each of these sauces brought new flavors different from other preparations from different restaurants. The best part was that the combination of the sauces, fish, and the appropriately prepared rice would give a well-balanced palette of flavor to each piece of fish. Half-way through the meal I felt incredibly guilty and knew that I would be in trouble once I had to explain to my girlfriend where I had been without her. I will definitely be back even if its a rough trip from DTLA to Encino.

The lower star reviews are obviously harder to write, as I want to be good to people especially nice people. However, I felt a little taken advantage of for a meal that was less than mediocre. Husband and I ordered four rolls and two soups, bill came out to $76. The trust me menu was a total scam. I felt like I was being over sold on the trust me menu and since she kept insisting I said okay fine just do one roll that two people can share. She came back with three "fancy" items and charged up the bill. Toro didn't taste anything like Toro. I'm very disappointed. I'm giving it two stars because the man was nice. CIA chef? Not so much.

This place is small, but don't let that dissuade you. Everything we had was extraordinary. Just tell chef what you like and he'll create something amazing! Everything is so fresh and he knows exactly where it was harvested. Ask for the fresh wasabi. The scallops, oysters, and toro were awesome!

Food is A+++++. Service is good. But the price is too high for me. If you are willing to pay for quality and not quantity this place is great

RACIST OWNER/CHEF HIRO. If there was an option, I wouldn't give this place one star. Please please do not eat here. The owner is racist. I've been so lucky to eat at amazing restaurants, fancy to awesome whole in walls. Furthermore amazing sushi. I simply asked for a spoon for my miso and he went on this rant about how miso traditionally is consumed. Then we ordered yellowtail belly (fishy btw) and asked for wasabi (he denied us) saying we didn't know how to eat. We were ruining sushi with soy sauce and wasabi. I don't know who this guy thinks he is. We canceled all of orders cause the energy was bad. As we walked out (he knew I was Chinese) he said Chinese don't know how to eat Japanese food. Me and my Caucasian boyfriend went off on him. We told the nice waitress to find another job. The owner is not a good person, a real angry ass & his business will ultimately go down! Do not support this establishment.
Chef Hiro prepares some of the best fish I have ever tasted! Everything was fresh, and garnished or sauced in the most delicious ways. He really knows what he's doing. My husband and I had the chef's choice and we couldn't stop eating. It was one delicious delicacy after the next. Service was impeccable. The waiter was polite and friendly, with the manners of a server at a the finest restaurant. But he was at a sushi place on Ventura. Atmosphere was comfortable and stylish. We chatted with the staff and our fellow diners after our meal, and left feeling we found a real gem of a restaurant.

This place has really stepped up it's game since being under new management. Fresh fish, pleasant environment and timely service. Well worth a second shot after the first place has since packed up and left.

Holy shitballs was this place good. Clean, prompt friendly service, but most importantly the quality of the fish was outstanding. The tiniest twist on traditional sushi places (for example, black edamame beans), but nothing that purists won't like. Mostly though, holy shit was the fish like butter. Go.

Great sushi, great service, great ambience and music (because that is very important) overall I had a great experience.

I seriously cannot believe how ridiculously good this sushi bar is. We ordered yellowtail, salmon, eel, toro, all INSANE. I know these types of reviews pop up often but seriously, I will cherish this place as long as it is open. Don't get me started on the tiger shrimp and uni.... WOW. Just amazing. Highly highly highly recommend. Hiro the chef will take care of you like no other. And by the way, their rice is superb, it's not just the fish. Can't wait to come back!!!

The perfect combination of flavor, quality, service & personality! Thoroughly enjoyable evening all round, so much so that we came back a few nights later. Chef Hiro brings out the best flavors with his sauces & fresh fish selections. My new favorite!

In the world of Encino sushi is a dime a dozen, but sushi done perfectly and fresh simultaneously is rare. The Fish House is a breath of fresh air with the simplistic elegance of each dish prepared by the Chef - his Hawaiian influence adds a variety to the usual favorites, and his creative "surprises" turn out to be the best item served the entire meal. I want to keep it a secret, but I was taught to share - Go hungry and leave blissfully full and enchanted! Thanks for a fabulous experience - we shall tango again, and again!

I'm not sure why this place has all 5 star reviews because 1. The sushi was warm! As in higher than body temperature warm. Also, the green tea tasted like oily water. That's right. It was tasteless and reeked of the greasy smell that enveloped the restaurant. I was in there for only 15 minutes and I walked out smelling like grease for the rest of the day. Will not revisit.

I just realized I gave them four stars when I meant to give five. Mahhhh baaaahhhhdddd. This place is bomb.

As a second generation Japanese American who grew up with Japanese parents, Sushi has always been a difficult food for me to find. There are so many sushi restaurants out there claiming they are "Traditional" and yet most don't have real wasabi, carry seasonal fish, and make everything so big with so much Mayo... Chef Hilo truly surprised me with his knowledge and deep understanding of the culture. His style wasn't like anything I had experienced before with his creative sauces and beautiful presentation. The biggest and best part for me was their shrimp. Not sweet shrimp but the regular shrimp. They actually use tiger shrimp and most of all they actually make the shrimp themselves instead of buying the packaged shrimp. I can keep writing about everything but instead I will just fully recommend stoping by and trying their sushi and sashimi :)

Chef Hilo is out of this world. Awesome Sushi. I highly recommend it and sit at the sushu bar as Chef Hilo makes you feel special and welcome!

The most amazing sushi in town. Chef Hiro's creations are delicious..thanks for my amazing new spot..

Passed by this spot from out of town. There were two chefs and Chris was the one who served my woman and I. I had a sushi plate and it was ON POINT. Fish was super fresh. Chris mentioned the fish are never frozen. And damn, the dressing they splashed on the sushi tasted amazing. None of that oily and sour crap from other sushi restaurants. So I devoured the entire dish, each one was soft and had that "melts in your mouth" taste. Not close to where I live but definitely will be coming back here when I'm in town. This is my first yelp post because the chefs were dope. Took time to tend to their customers. Heard this is a new spot, definitely has lots of potential.

Of all the Japanese restaurants in California The Fish House stands out as the most extraordinary. Chef Hilo is CIA (Culinary Institute of America) trained and an absolute master!

Absolutely L.O.V.E. this place. I've been following this sushi chef for a while, so it's great to see him open his own place. Aside from the fresh, tasty fish, he makes his own sauces, which are amazing! I always do omakase with Chef Hilo - let him select for you, and you won't be disappointed. The cooked fish is fantastic as well. He's still working on the decor & ambiance, so don't let the basic look sway your decision to eat here. This place is a must for sushi lovers.

My favorite sushi spot. I followed the chef from another sushi bar. His amazing skills of special sauces and creative dishes are to die for. He can prepare gluten free dishes with expertise. I highly recommended and let the chef create something special for you.

Seriously some of the best sushi I've ever had. Chef Hiro is clearly passionate about what he does and making sure you are satisfied. Ask for his daily special, you won't be disappointed.

Amazing sushi! Fresh and delicious! I've never had sushi the way they prepare it and I was pleasantly surprised . I strongly recommend the albacore and salmon sushi. I will defiantly be a regular and found my new fav sushi spot !

Seriously one of the best sushi experiences I've ever had. All of the fish was incredible- so fresh and tender. The chef even came to the table to talk about the preparation and the fish. We let him pick our menu- best decision ever. His sauces are incredible! I would really recommend this place if you are in the area. Decor is really simple, you might normally walk past. Don't let that sway you though. The food is a step above any other sushi place. One of my top sushi restaurants in LA

Tonight was the first time my wife and I went to The Fish House. We were blown away by the quality of the fish and the creative use of spices and sauces. The albacore Tataki was divine, the yellowtail was so tender it melted in your mouth. And don't get me started about the fish & chips roll with homemade tartar sauce. Had the blue crab hand roll for dessert and we were very happy campers! Can't wait to go back! Maybe tomorrow?

Tried the Fish House a couple of weeks ago. This is NOT the typical California roll -- spicy tuna type place. Much more unique and interesting. We sat at a table and did not do the 'chef's choice' but rather ordered several delicious specials and items off the menu. Our server was very helpful. The fish is distinctively fresh. Small restaurant; not full on a Friday evening -- check it out --- you get what you pay for so it is not like one of the '1/2 price' places.

Great sushi, and wonderful presentation! Hiro is a very passionate sushi chef, and this translates to the preparation and care taken in each dish served to his customer. The "surprise me" selection on the menu allows you to let the chef take control of your meal, a cant miss selection. Wonderful selections were made in the "selections," and totally trust the chef. Overall, a really good fresh experience!

I'm torn on how to review this place, so I'll keep it simple and honest. I eat good sushi several times a week, I buy fish downtown and use my sashimi knives at home, I've been to all the big name places and all the cheapies too. I know fish well. I love raw fish. All of it. The chef and servers were incredibly friendly, and absolutely zero complaints about the service. The fish tasted wonderful, as we tried many items. Toro, Scallop, amberjack, black snapper, blue crab, lobster, yellowtail, monk fish liver, and a few others. My lady friend and I thoroughly enjoyed everything, no complaints. I got to the car, started driving, and did about 100mph all the way home on the fwy, I couldn't get to the bathroom fast enough. It was a vile scene and horribly painful. After 3 trips to the toilet, I decided to write a neutral review...I don't believe they took any shortcuts or bought cheap fish, but this was clearly not a good situation. I'm hoping my friend isn't shitting her brains out as well, and It was just a fluke (no pun) incident for me. Never happened before. They did everything so well and genuinely put forth much effort, I think I may try it again, but man, my ass is not enjoying the unwanted workout for the last hour. Gotta go, round 4 is brewing.

New to the area and decided to come here based on yelp reviews...once again the locals/yelpers did not disappoint. The rolls we're great and unique (Try any of the bad a$$ rolls) and the sauces had great flavor and the right amount of kick. Will be back again for sure when I come back down to la next month

This is the best sushi I have ever had. The chef, Hiro, is such an artist in all of his creations. We did the chef choice route, told him our likes and dislikes, how hungry we were and he created the menu for us. All of the fish is melt in your mouth fresh. He made a different sauce for every dish, that completed the different tastes and textures. He even was able to prepare foods for my pregnant friend who is limited in what she can eat. This is unlike any sushi experience I've had. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants quality sushi and a great and friendly staff who knows is knowledgable in their food.

I just moved to the valley and was looking for a good sushi restaurant. The Fish House had good reviews on yelp so I decided to give it a try for lunch. Maybe I came in on an off day, but I was very disappointed. I had the sashimi and sushi lunch special and except for the tuna, the fish was not fresh and could taste it. The presentation was nice and so were the workers, but that's where the positives ended. I will not be coming back and look forward to trying other sushi restaurants in the area.

I grab lunch here at least once or twice a week and the Sushi is always amazing! The fish is always super fresh and very high quality. The blue crab hand roll is INSANE! The chef is a really cool guy and always goes out of his way to make sure you get a great meal. Definitely my new favorite sushi spot. Go check it out!

Great service. Sushi was super fresh and their sauces are delicious. Love that they use non-disposable chop sticks! Will definitely be back.

This place is ridiculous!! If you are a TRUE sushi addict and enjoy something different than mainstream "rolls" eat here!! The wasabi is fresh, not the green putty you receive in other places. Oops, I failed to mention the amazing fish, not only raw but cooked also...something for everyone!!!

I had dinner at this new sushi restaurant last night for the second time. Hilo, the CIA-educated owner and chef, provides fabulous food and great conversation. There's no reason to dip any of the fish in soy sauce. Each dish has its own chef-made sauce. Every dish was excellent; my favorites were the amberjack sushi in a light citrus sauce and the thin scallop slices with caviar, part of a scallop medley. My daughter especially enjoyed the halibut with a thicker, spicy citrus sauce. I urge you to sit at the sushi bar and allow Hilo to select your dishes and the order in which they are served. We plan to go back often.

Thank God I found this place! Now I don't have to drive so far to get the BEST sushi I've found in LA in 10 years. I can not recommend this place highly enough!

We decided to try The Fish House last Saturday because a friend of mine keeps posting yummy pictures of the food. Last Saturday we went and decided on Chef's Choice. It was so incredibly delicious! I ate things I never would have tried and every dish Chef Hiro made was better than then the one before! Soooo....last Thursday, we went back and again had a great expericence! This place is a great find for fine sushi!

Wow! What a find! Driving down Ventura Blvd. looking for a spot for lunch. The reviews for the Fish House looked good. Had a Blue Crab Roll, Lobster Roll, Sashimi Lunch, Toro which was the best I've ever had! Food looks fresh, well presented and creative sauces and ingredients. Turns out Hiro, the Sushi Chef and owner came by and he was someone we had known for years but hadn't seen him in many years. Nice surprise! Several regulars in there having lunch and all spoke highly of the Fish House. We'll definitely make the drive out just to dine here again.

...felt like having sushi at our favorite dentists plaza...tastes like they definitely use fresh and organic ingredients. The Bad Ass #2 roll is good (could use a little more spice for my taste) and the avocado salad is perfect refreshing lunch dish. My husband got the umakasi-chefs special tasting menu. The beautiful live scallop plate and the black snapper melted in your mouth. Besides, you can sit outside on a gorgeous CA afternoon!!!

It's Saturday and we were waiting there a few minutes before they opened... they were kind enough to let us in early to have a seat and wait. We sat at a table not the bar. I got really lectured by the chef: lectured on how they only use wild-caught fish, lectured on how most sake is crap but he carries top quality. But it wasn't in a way that felt like friendly sharing of info... I felt lectured. Fast forward... I opted for the small 300ml bottle of a junmai daiginjo (Kiko Masamune)... it was very good as is should be for $25 for a small bottle. Total lecture on fresh versus horseradish wasabi... and then we wound up with the smallest little bits on just the two pieces of toro. Seriously, I hadn't even sat down yet and I had three lectures under my belt. (Admittedly, I may have asked questions on all three topics.) At one point he was expounding on the virtues of one particular sake and I had the audacity to look at a different bottle while he was still lecturing on the first one and he said "Are you listening to me?!"... like I was a student caught falling asleep during class. I mean, I love hearing new things about sushi, sake and wasabi and I hate when sushi chefs don't open up at all but this was just a little wierd. The only other people in there were a couple in their 80s that showed up about half hour after they opened and it looked like it was there first time there. Aside from us and them... no one darkened the doorway between 5:30 and 6:30... that doesn't necessarily mean anything but, man, this place is sporting an awful lot of 5-star reviews for a place this empty on a Saturday evening. On to the fish... the actual sushi was pretty good. The toro was fine but nothing stellar ($24 for two pieces). As reported elsewhere, a lot of sauces on everything... but pretty good sauces. The Albacore Delight was kind of a mess... unspectacular roll with some underlying fishiness that I didn't like. The Spicy Tuna on deep-fried rice cake... if I'd never had one before , I'd say it was kind of interesting, but I've had this dozens of times and this one was so-so at best. The Seared Salmon Sashimi with Crispy Onion. Again, it was OK but the crispy onions were not freshly made or very good, too much sauce. I did not like the vibe in this place. Maybe because no one wants to be the only diners in a sushi bar but also small things... I asked if we could hang on to one of the menus to look at more options (and it's kind of fun to study menus and discuss the other stuff on it, right?) and the server actually said "No, I will bring it back when you need it again. It's better to leave more room at the table." What?? There were 3 of us sitting at a four-top in an empty restaurant; we had enough room to play Monopoly! Also... seems a little pricey for what we got. I guess when you start of with $24 toro and a $25 small bottle of sake, it's easy to wind up with a larger bill so, I might be off here. Three stars is A-OK and this place wasn't really OK to me... but two stars is kinda brutal... they tried.

Wow. I'm shocked that people eat here. I couldn't believe how subpar the food was. The tap water tasted like it had been used to wash dishes. We ordered a ton of appetizers, fries, shrimp, ceviche, hot wings, filet and the only thing that was palatable was the shrimp. The ahi tacos had zero flavor, were extremely salty and the shells were burnt. The tables were sticky and dirty (multiple tables) and the floor had trash strewn around. The servers were nice but everything about the experience was pretty damn bad. I would NEVER recommend this restaurant to a friend.
(1)
Michael B.
excellent sushi and non-traditional, but over-the-top expensive. I was warned that it would be a chef's selection menu, but was still shocked over the price of this meal. That was months ago, I still amazed that it was over 4 times as much as my standard sushi restaurant.
(3)
Jason B.
5 star service 4 star for small and pleasant atmosphere 2-3 star for lunch special fish . We did not have sushi so I can't speak for the quality of the sushi . The grilled fish lunch special was over cooked and did not taste fresh . They were super friendly and attentive . I will update when I return to try the sushi .

He is as much a Saucier as a sushi chef. Hiro does a great job dressing all the pieces of fish, and adds a lot of nice little touches to make your meal special (shitake mushrooms in the miso soup, caviar in the blue crab hand roll, mixes up the lunch special so you're eating different sushi choices every day ). Hiro is from maui so the preparation is in that tradition and people who miss the islands will love it. This is my top restaurant. I eat here more than anywhere else, and I really think you should try it out while fish house is still our little secret.
(5)
David D.
Decent. Very fresh fish at a good price point. They prep the fish in house. They are heavy handed with the oils sauces and searing so this is far from traditional serious sushi. Seaweed is the low quality pre-packaged kind and the wasabi is fake, so I can't give them four stars. People are friendly though, portions are American style, and service quick.
(3)

Wow! This place was great. My wife and I wanted good quality sushi. We've been to Okumura and thought it was great but I think Fish House brings a unique flavor to the dishes. It's a little pricey but you definitely get what you pay for.

Rarely do I feel the comfort level to look at a Sushi chef in the eyes and make a bold statement. I revere these disciplined and dedicated chefs like words cannot explain, and typically I'm just always in awe. I turn 60 in November and have been eating sushi, since the age of 15. On our second visit to The Fish House a few days ago, I looked at Chef Hiro in the eyes and told him that he is doing something that without a doubt, I have never experienced before from a Sushi chef. I feel centuries of tradition within his Sushi, but there is an influence of Hawaii in just about every bite that passed my lips. Maybe if I lived in Hawaii, I would be able to elucidate better, but I do not live there. His quality is that rare word I don't throw out too often...."Exquisite". In addition, he will do things that make you forget about ever asking for Soy sauce, by using delicate amounts of complimenting sauces/elixirs that I could not tell you exactly what they are....other than he makes them from scratch. This is a jewel box of a Sushi bar. Some serious sushi, if ever there was, but as someone who knows from all things culinary, I can tell you that it is a true art/passion of Chef Hiro's. The gentleman (Joshua) who is a "right hand man" in keeping things flowing is also of the same ilk, when it comes to being passionate about cooking. The bottom line is that you get to dine in a place that is run by people who aren't just about the "cash register". Everyone cares.

This is one of the best kept secrets in the Valley. Tucked away underneath CPK in an office building-heavy area is a hidden gem of a sushi house. One reason is the ambience. While it's busy during lunchtime, it maintains its neighborhood vibe. This is in large part due to chef Hiro. He is friendly and attentive, and cares that you enjoy his food and have a good experience. It is warm and mellow. However, relaxed doesn't mean that the quality is not excellent. The sushi is ridiculously fresh. Like you eat it, and your body is saying "thank you!" We had the chef's choice on this particular evening, and it allowed chef Hiro to display his considerable sushi skills. Some dishes were pared down, a couple were seared, and some featured the homemade sauces more prominently. As much as anything, this man has an eye for good fish. Some things that stood out: -Braised tuna belly. This dish was dense, rich, super flavorful, yet light. Unique and delicious. -Toro from Italy. The toro showcased the high-quality fish and superior knife skills of chef Hiro. The bonus was the fresh wasabi. Have you ever had fresh wasabi? I don't even like wasabi, but I could have this with my sushi all the time. - King crab hand roll in soya paper. I don't know why I even mentioned the soya paper in the description because all you really taste is the generous, incredible crab. The crab tasted like it was just taken out of the ocean without being fishy. The trick, it turns out, is cooking it in saltwater. So it's little touches like this that differentiate The Fish House from your standard sushi place. - Quality throughout. The tea I received was warm, earthy and a cut-above the usual green tea. The products accompanying the sushi were excellent. There is no skimping here, and it shows. The Fish House has spoiled me for other sushi restaurants in our area. The relaxed vibe, high quality fish, excellent sushi skills of chef Hiro, and reasonable price point make The Fish House my sushi place of choice.

Most Fresh fish I've had in the valley! The chef/owner is in the middle of all the action, best choice is the chef's special...just sit by the bar and he will put together his own specialites...just make sure to leave some room for beer and saki.

Amazing, delicious fresh sushi and fish prepared in ways that will make your mouth happy and tummy wishing it had more space. Chef Hiro is my Hero. He's a master at bringing out the best from the fish and his plating are works of art in themselves. Wonderful find in the valley. Trust Chef Hiro to conjure up whatever your heart desires. He delivers and then some.

I don't usually give 5 Stars. But I just HAVE TO for The Fish House. Every piece of sushi is fresh and delicious. You can taste the quality and love that was put into each piece that comes out. The service was amazing. Hiro, the sushi chef is fantastic, and knows exactly what I want. Our server (Taku?) was knowledgeable and super sweet. Ordered and recommend all of these: -The Lobster Hand roll -Philly roll -Badass #3 roll -Black Snapper -Seared Salmon -Carpaccio I am so going back for more soon!

Wow, wandered in here spontaneously for a quick lunch with my daughter, and couldn't believe what I found! If you ever had the experience of going to Sushi Nozawa in the old days (way before Sugar Fish), this is what The Fish House is! Chef's choice of the freshest fish and authentic sushi, the way the Japanese eat it, no mayo or crunch rolls. It was a pricey meal, but totally worth it. And, Chef Hiro is a lot nicer than Nozawa!

Go here, you won't regret it. Don't let the only few reviews daunt you, it's a brand new place. Whenever I need my sushi fix, this is where I go. I've established a relationship with Hiro, the owner and sushi chef, and now don't even need to order when I visit. He knows my palate extraordinarily well and treats it to culinary perfection every time. His fish is very fresh, his sauces are all in-house made, and he has things I've never seen elsewhere, and I eat a lot of sushi. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Friendly, amazing sushi, and an atmosphere that welcomes every time; the wall in the men's bathroom is my case and point.

All I'm going to say is, you will not be disappointed. And, if you're still not sure, come in for the $14 lunch special ($15.26 w/ tax) to try their soup, salad, crab meat hand roll and 6 pieces of sushi or sashimi (each piece has a specific sauce and/or topping to enhance the fish's flavor.

New Sushi spot right in the mall on the corner of Woodley and Ventura. The fish here is just so fresh and tasty. The chef here is the nicest guy ever and is amazing at making his own nigiri (sushi over rice) with amazing sauces and preparations. The ambience/decor may not be to die for but the food really is high quality sushi and not in some large commercial sushi restaurant like Katsuya.

My friend n i tried fish house for first time last week. When we try new sushi spot we always order omakase/chef's choice...so we will know how good they are. The result....was excellent!! Very clean and up scale dining, but still cozy n friendly. Hiro gave us so many dish of his creation that night. I love how they take serious of japanese culture...caz million of sushi in valley and not so many places i can leave w happy face. he started with smoked albacore salad...ended with...traditional sushi. There were grilled butterfish and some kind of beef too between the course. I just loved it how hiro cater us. I had everything i usually like and at same time i tried something new too. I definitely coming back to you guys. Thank you for taking care of us,hiro n kris!!

Such a hidden gem in Encino. Such fresh and innovative stuff. I feel silly for driving past it so many times now. Parking underground is validated.

Funny story actually. So we were on our way to another sushi joint on Ventura when we stumbled upon this little gem thanks to a super friendly security guard who personally walked us over. I was a little hesitant to try the place because A. I hadn't yelped it B. We were the only one's there and C. The place smelled well...fishy o.O but we gave it a try since we were nicely parked in their underground parking lot (tons of spots-big plus) and the staff seemed very welcoming. Now comes the good part...the food was AMAZINGGG to say the least. So fresh. So tasty. And such a surprise! We went with the albacore roll, boston lobster and Chef's surprise. Everything was exquisite especially the chef's surprises using only the freshest ingredients that literally melted in my mouth! Also, tried an oyster shooter for the first time and I'm hooked. I could seriously come here every day! Thank you Fish House and Mystery Security guard for my new fav sushi joint in the valley. :)

Came by today on a Monday night. The place was empty so I was a bit reluctant to go in but decided to do so anyways. Chef Hiro was on the phone ordering fish for the next day so I almost left but he told me I won't regret it if I stayed. So I did and had the Omakase (Chef's choice). He did not disappoint. The nigiri and sashimi he served up was excellent. I had halibut, snapper, blue fin tuna, albacore, uni and tiger prawns, all of which were made with an artful twist. I especially loved the salmon sashimi from Denmark with homemade soy sauce. He ended the meal with a lobster roll with big chunks inside and tamago slices which were both a perfect end to a delicious dinner. I highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar as I got some history about sushi and the culinary arts as a bonus to the great food.

We make it a point to come here at least once a week. The ahi biscuit has become a dietary necessity, the the badass 2 and caterpillar are beyond compare and the fresh fish offerings are unparalleled. The personal attention and familiar atmosphere makes this the ideal spot for either a casual lunch or a hot date. Encino's best kept secret won't stay hidden for long.

A hidden little gem in the valley that most people will pass by. The fish is fresh and amazing, the service is incredible and the chef is very hospitable. If you live in the valley you definitely need to try this place. The fish needs no soy sauce as the chef has created his own amazing sauces that pair perfect. Once you go to this place you are bound to be a repeat customer.

Absolutely LOVE this place. I usually go for the lunch special. I work across the street and only get a 30 min lunch but the staff members are so attentive they keep an eye on you (not in a creepy way) to make sure you're satisfied and they know we only have a small amount of time to eat and go. I've had the sashimi lunch special and it has not let me down. It was so flavorful and delicious. The fish is so fresh. I can't complain! You have to try it!

Delicious ! Hidden gem. Services is 5 star. Fish is 5 star .My son and I came in for a quick dinner, i remember seeing this place on yelp or somewhere . It's a great sushi resturant . I love the wall in the ladies restroom where you can write your wishes or something in that sense. And I heard in the men's bathroom there's a chalkboard and you write your wishes or whatever. Think it's an interesting touch to make customers remember them.

amazing food! Chef Hiro was incredibly generous with his portions, and the great food was wide in variety and it didn't stop coming until our shirt buttons popped. We did the Chef Choice option and we are very glad we did. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious. please please please go there.

Amazing fish, chef, service...everything was spot-on. The dishes prepared for us couldn't have been more perfect. The yellowtail belly, toro, smoked salmon...I can't stop thinking about this place. So glad to have found The Fish House so close to home. Can't wait to go back!

Second time at this Amazing place. The fish is superb quality and melts in your mouth. The owner / chef is super sweet and will make you one of his specialty rolls / sushi with any fish your taste buds desire. The restaurant is VERY fairly priced. Definitely coming back again and again. Arigato!

Pros: great tasting, fresh sushi. Cons: expensive Formerly "maki sushi". New owners, new business. My wife and I were regulars at maki sushi and were bummed when we got there and learned it was now closed. However, WOW, we were not disappointed. This place is great. The waiter was very informative, the food was very fresh and tasted high quality. My favorite dish from maki sushi was the baked salmon roll. I asked the waiter if that was still on the menu and he said it was, even though it doesn't show. He knew exactly how maki sushi made it and asked if I wanted it the maki sushi way or the fish house way. I wanted it the maki way and he served it up. It actually came out even better tasting then how maki had made it! Will def be coming here again! 5 stars!

Excellent selection and very fresh sushi. The salmon sushi is delicious as well as the toro. The owner is really cool and friendly.

Excellent food and staff. The sushi is somewhat different than your traditional sushi as it has some Hawaiian influences to it. The fish is fresh as can be. Highly recommended.

Excellent and original. Very fresh and a big step beyond traditional. Loved the baked lobster roll and house made sauces for the sushi and sashimi. Way good.

Went here on a business lunch and boy did I enjoy everything! The place is small located in the shopping center on the NW corner of Ventura and Woodley - you know the one, there's a huge carousel on the corner. There's a couple tables inside and a couple smaller ones outside, seating also available at the sushi bar. We were a group of 4 today but I definitely wouldn't suggest groups of more than 8 or even 6 as there isnt much room for rearranging tables inside. Good lively music at good volume so as not to deter conversation, i think artic monkeys was playing when we walked in, I remember sublime on at one point and the killers at another. Chef Hiro is friendly, made conversation with everyone. Server was great, explained the menu to us and everything that got put in front of us. Apologies I didn't think at the time to take pictures but believe me everything was so well presented I couldn't wait to scarf everything down! We all had the sashimi lunch special, I think it was $14 but dont recall for sure: We were started off with a miso soup - yummers, then came a plate with a beautifully set small salad and wrap which was delicious but definitely had a kick, the end was a plate with 6 pieces of sushi each with their own sauce...cant really remember at this point what they each were but believe me they were each super delicious! we also ordered some edamame - which disappeared quick! Also had a green dragon roll I believe and a yellow tail (?) roll - God were these delicious too! it is definitely on the somewhat pricey side - but today I won't complain because the boss bought lunch :) will definitely come again...even if the boss doesn't buy

This is the best sushi experience I've ever had. Trust Chef Hiro and he will construct the perfect menu tailored just for you. After telling him my general likes he put together a five course dinner including butterfish, sea urchin, and bacon wrapped scallops. Every plate was unbelievable. They tasted amazing, were perfectly presented, and each accompanied by a short story from Hiro. He is easily the friendliest chef I have met and his passion for cooking is evident in every dish. Go here as soon as you can and leave your night to Hiro, the dining experience is among the best.

Katsuya chokes on Hiro's Nuts. Period. The best fish I have had in the valley hands down. Let Hiro surprise you.

My friend brought me here for dinner. He said it was great sushi. I have to agree and was very pleasantly surprised. The chef is wonderful. I am writing this review because I want this sushi bar to be around for a long time. Really some of the best sushi ever!!

Fantastic. Chef Hiro is passionate about his craft. 3 of us ordered the "Chef's Choice", dish after dish came out--incredibly fresh and diverse choices--can't name them all. Let Chef Hiro showcase his talents--you won't be disappointed.

Finally a sushi bar like the good ol days... fresh fish and reasonably priced. The chefs here actually have personalities and made my first visit very enjoyable. Looking forward to bringing my girl this weekend! BTW the hamachi is bomb!

(2)Jesse D.
This place is small, but don't let that dissuade you. Everything we had was extraordinary. Just tell chef what you like and he'll create something amazing! Everything is so fresh and he knows exactly where it was harvested. Ask for the fresh wasabi. The scallops, oysters, and toro were awesome!
(5)Alex F.
Food is A+++++. Service is good. But the price is too high for me. If you are willing to pay for quality and not quantity this place is great
(4)Karen Z.
Wow!!! Yummy yummy sushi/sashimi!! The sesame albocore tataki was sooo delicious!! Great service and high quality fish!! I got bluefin tuna as a lunch special! Wow!!
(5)Lina W.

I downloaded Yelp just to leave this review... Chef Hiro is truly one of a kind. My fiancé and I are huge sushi-goers, and until about a month ago, we would bounce around the valley and greater LA area searching for the freshest fish. Not only have we found the freshest, most delicate fish at The Fish House, we have been blown away by the most unexpected restaurant experience. Hiro does not only make sushi, he does incredible baked fish (try the Butterfish-- you will NOT be disappointed), with his own unique Hawaiian influence and style. On top of that, he makes coconut shrimp! And not just any coconut shrimp-- but a melt-in-your-mouth explosion of flavor. I can't praise this place enough. If you sit at the bar, he will make you his own creations, you just tell him what your dislikes and he will make you what he feels like making. In a nutshell, if you are interested in trying a sushi spot that serves nothing but the freshest fish (purchased daily) with a unique style from an INCREDIBLY talented chef, do not hesitate to try Hiro's Fish House. He will not disappoint, and you will not regret your dining experience.
(5)Megan H.
(5)Andrew A.
This place has really stepped up it's game since being under new management. Fresh fish, pleasant environment and timely service. Well worth a second shot after the first place has since packed up and left.
(4)Heather H.
Holy shitballs was this place good. Clean, prompt friendly service, but most importantly the quality of the fish was outstanding. The tiniest twist on traditional sushi places (for example, black edamame beans), but nothing that purists won't like. Mostly though, holy shit was the fish like butter. Go.
(5)Jade H.
Great sushi, great service, great ambience and music (because that is very important) overall I had a great experience.
(5)Michael S.
(5)Renae L.
The perfect combination of flavor, quality, service & personality! Thoroughly enjoyable evening all round, so much so that we came back a few nights later. Chef Hiro brings out the best flavors with his sauces & fresh fish selections. My new favorite!
(5)Christine J.
(5)Victoria K.
Bomb dot com. Seriously delicious fresh fish, very attentive service and a funny owner. We will be back! :)
(5)Yy J.
(1)Joan M.
I just realized I gave them four stars when I meant to give five. Mahhhh baaaahhhhdddd. This place is bomb.
(5)Jimmy F.
(5)Becky W.
Chef Hilo is out of this world. Awesome Sushi. I highly recommend it and sit at the sushu bar as Chef Hilo makes you feel special and welcome!
(5)Christina B.
The most amazing sushi in town. Chef Hiro's creations are delicious..thanks for my amazing new spot..
(5)Jett I.
(5)Yumi K.
My favorite sushi restaurant~!! No matter what you order, you can have the chef's creative and amazing dishes. I strongly recommend chef's choice because he will surprise you for each dish~ I had a fabulous time at The Fish House and plan on going back again for sure. I cannot wait~!!
(5)Sarah s.
My boyfriend find out about this place. We decide to give them a try last night. And from now this place going to be our favorite sushi place for long time.. Everything was fresh and delicious. Two thump up for the Chef HIRO and staffs... Can't wait to go for more
(5)John W.
Of all the Japanese restaurants in California The Fish House stands out as the most extraordinary. Chef Hilo is CIA (Culinary Institute of America) trained and an absolute master!
(5)Linda Y.
(5)Brian K.
My favorite sushi spot. I followed the chef from another sushi bar. His amazing skills of special sauces and creative dishes are to die for. He can prepare gluten free dishes with expertise. I highly recommended and let the chef create something special for you.
(5)Noelle M.
Seriously some of the best sushi I've ever had. Chef Hiro is clearly passionate about what he does and making sure you are satisfied. Ask for his daily special, you won't be disappointed.
(5)Nelly A.
Amazing sushi! Fresh and delicious! I've never had sushi the way they prepare it and I was pleasantly surprised . I strongly recommend the albacore and salmon sushi. I will defiantly be a regular and found my new fav sushi spot !
(5)KP N.
(5)Andy L.
(5)Andrea G.
(5)The Only B.

(3)John M.
New to the area and decided to come here based on yelp reviews...once again the locals/yelpers did not disappoint. The rolls we're great and unique (Try any of the bad a$$ rolls) and the sauces had great flavor and the right amount of kick. Will be back again for sure when I come back down to la next month
(5)Karen F.
(5)Adrian M.
(2)Nick A.
(5)Molly C.
Great service. Sushi was super fresh and their sauces are delicious. Love that they use non-disposable chop sticks! Will definitely be back.
(5)Daniel V.
(5)Jeff L.
(5)Joel H.
Thank God I found this place! Now I don't have to drive so far to get the BEST sushi I've found in LA in 10 years. I can not recommend this place highly enough!
(5)J. M. T.
(5)Mike L.
(5)Lu Lu S.
...felt like having sushi at our favorite dentists plaza...tastes like they definitely use fresh and organic ingredients.
(4)Ian S.
Three stars is A-OK and this place wasn't really OK to me... but two stars is kinda brutal... they tried.
(3)T K.
I would NEVER recommend this restaurant to a friend.

excellent sushi and non-traditional, but over-the-top expensive. I was warned that it would be a chef's selection menu, but was still shocked over the price of this meal. That was months ago, I still amazed that it was over 4 times as much as my standard sushi restaurant.

(5)Debra T.

(5)Michael G.
(5)R Z.
This place is wonderful. The chef clearly has passion for his work. The sushi is excellent. Omakase was well worth it.
(5)Evy Y.

This was my first time here, I think I found my new favorite sushi spot. . Everything I tried was very delicious. . . Must try.

Such a hidden gem in Encino. Such fresh and innovative stuff. I feel silly for driving past it so many times now. Parking underground is validated.
(5)Adelina M.

(5)David F.
(5)Jenna H.

(5)Tyler E.
amazing food! Chef Hiro was incredibly generous with his portions, and the great food was wide in variety and it didn't stop coming until our shirt buttons popped. We did the Chef Choice option and we are very glad we did. The food was incredibly fresh and delicious. please please please go there.
(5)Anna P.
Amazing fish, chef, service...everything was spot-on. The dishes prepared for us couldn't have been more perfect. The yellowtail belly, toro, smoked salmon...I can't stop thinking about this place. So glad to have found The Fish House so close to home. Can't wait to go back!
(5)Julie G.
Second time at this Amazing place. The fish is superb quality and melts in your mouth. The owner / chef is super sweet and will make you one of his specialty rolls / sushi with any fish your taste buds desire. The restaurant is VERY fairly priced. Definitely coming back again and again. Arigato!

Excellent Sushi Restaurant. They care and it shows. Highly recommend.

5 stars!
(5)Armen A.
Excellent selection and very fresh sushi. The salmon sushi is delicious as well as the toro. The owner is really cool and friendly.
(5)Robert A.
Excellent food and staff. The sushi is somewhat different than your traditional sushi as it has some Hawaiian influences to it. The fish is fresh as can be. Highly recommended.
(5)Joseph G.
Excellent and original. Very fresh and a big step beyond traditional. Loved the baked lobster roll and house made sauces for the sushi and sashimi. Way good.
(4)Tatiana B.
My boyfriend & I ate dinner here about a week ago and honestly everything that Chef Hiro created was amazing. Excellent quality fish, amazing preparation, and very attentive waiters. We will definitely be back! :)

(5)Daniel G.
Katsuya chokes on Hiro's Nuts. Period. The best fish I have had in the valley hands down. Let Hiro surprise you.
(5)Carolyn C.
My friend brought me here for dinner. He said it was great sushi. I have to agree and was very pleasantly surprised. The chef is wonderful. I am writing this review because I want this sushi bar to be around for a long time. Really some of the best sushi ever!!
(5)Tom R.
