This is my first three star review...nothing ever has just been in the middle I guess.. OK, so I went for the lunch special. The salad with honey dressing was horrible, the greens were sour; who does that?... not to mention the hot and sour soup was not hot as in spicy hot; it was hot as in temperature hot like burn your tongue. The entree on the other hand was scrumptious, I had the Schezwan chicken it was "off the hook." My room mate had, Beef onion, it was flavorful I didn't have much I was chowing down on that Schezwan. On the real the real though don't be upset after the soup and salad the entree makes up for it in every way possible. PS the asian lady (hostess/cashier/owner i think) will hold your hand ever so gently or lock arms like we're high school.. ... she's flirty.

Celebrated the parent's 32 years anniversary here with the family! OMG, the lady that greeted and showed us to our table was so sweet, felt like she was part of our family, giving us hugs! LOL.Waiters and servers are so friendly and very attentive! =) This was last month so I forgot exactly what was ordered, however, i know we did get one of their dinner specials (came with soup, appetizers, and I believer 5-6 diff entrees) and it was able to feed our table of 7 with leftovers to take home. Huge and generous portions! =) The plate that stood out to me the most and was the first to be gone is... the HONEY WALUNUT SHRIMP!!!!!!! mmmmmmm! hands down, one of the best I have tried...EVER! JK, not ever, but so far! haha definitely recommend that plate! you will love it, its to die for in my opinion! darn, i wish i did this review right after I dined over there so I can give you other plate recommendations! sorry my yelpees =( Mom and pop restaurant, attentive waiters, warm and friendly atmosphere, large food portions, tasty and delicious plates. def a fan, 4 stars from me! =)

This is the best Chinese food I've ever had. I love this place and can't believe there could be a negative comment. My favorite are Sizzling Rice Soup, egg rolls and moo shu shrimp. Everything I've had is wonderful. The people are dear. Having eaten here since they opened I like to think it's because they know me so well but the truth is everyone is treated like family. You will love this place and they people who work so hard to make sure you are happy.

My dad has being going here since it was literally a shack in the middle of a field. They have watched me grow up. The food is amazing and service is even better. Don't know what to order? Let me help: WEALTH DINNER! Also, get a side order of their Egg Fu Yung. It is unlike any other you've ever had. And it tastes fantastic. I've taken many of my friends here and they all react the same way: Chinese food will never be the same for them. When Mama is there, you're experience is even better. Nothing beats her signature "See you tomorrow!" send off.

UPDATE: My mom wanted to go here. I was like UGH FINE..since we're down the street and mommas hungry lol! I'm always about 2nd or 3rd chances, BUT...I've had it with this place. I love the lil old lady tho :) (you know her!!). I tried wor wonton, one of my usual favorites: did they serve me 2 day old soup? It had no flavor (usually it's fantastic!!), and the shrimp tasted like dirt!! I thought it was me, then my mom said "taste my shrimp"..yup, tastes like dirt alright! ok, moving on to the main dish. Shrimp fried rice and hong kong sea food noodle. What's up with their shrimp??? Maybe it's marinated in dirt..maybe they didn't defrost it enough? i don't know, but it was odd and not a pleasant experience. And again, they need to SIMA DOWN with the prices! I seriously wish everyone a great experience wherever they go, but watch out for this place! If it's your favorite..AWESOME! If anyone recommends a killer dish there I should try, I'm open :) I will continue to search for the best chinese in town! peace, love, and yummy eating :)

Tried GD today based on the Yelp reviews and loved it! Hard to find good Chinese restaurants like this, so I consider it a hidden gem. Agree with one of the other reviewers that it's hard to find a good Chinese mom and pop restaurant in SoCal anymore--this is definitely one of them! Service was great from the get-go...was greeted promptly at the door and immediately taken to a booth. They then brought me hot tea right away and the waiter was there within 5 minutes to take my order. I ordered the Egg Foo Yung and Walnut Shrimp (with broccoli) and the waiter was kind enough to explain the difference between their EFY and what I was likely used to, which is the egg patty style. Their EFY is a combo of veggies, eggs and shoestring onion rings in a round patty shape, and comes with the traditional gravy. Really tasty. Food came out within 15 mins and portions were HUGE! I was alone, but it would easily have been plenty for two people with leftovers or three people could have finished it. Definitely recommend Golden Dragon for those who want a relaxing, Chinese comfort food experience. Check the hours before coming here...a bit complex, but seems to be common here in the OC: Sunday: 11:30a-9:30p M-W 11:30a-3p, then 4:30p-9:30p Th-F 11:30a-3p, then 4:30p-10p Sat 11:30a-10p

One of my favorite Chinese places in Costa Mesa...from mama sitting you at your table and giving you a hug on the way out to their awesome sizzling rice soup...you can't go wrong.

Simply he BEST CHINESE FOOD in coastal Orange county. Moo Shu Chicken and Pork are insanely good. House Fried Rice is soooo flavorful. Orange Peel Chicken is a tasty fav too. Sizzling Rice Soup -- fun to hear, see and yum to eat. Gotta Love "Chinese Grandma" -- always so warm and welcoming -- her favorite line, "See you tomorrow". Great food, reasonable prices and superlative attention from owner. Vastly superior to any and all Chinese chain restaurants, even good ones like Pei Wei.

  • Chie T.

Yeah... this is a no for me. We ordered three dishes and all three were just bland. It's not worth getting into really anything else. I tend to think that chinese is always on the doused in sauce side and this was just... not. We didn't even bother saving the leftovers and I love chinese leftovers (it's one of the foods that usually is helped by a night in the fridge). Oh well - still searching for a go-to Chinese spot.

This is our family's go to for Chinese. Spicy Kung Pao beef and Mongolian Beef. AMAZING. The place is usually poppin! And what other place has a friendly Chinese Grandmother pulling you by the hand and sit you down at your table. It's a great place!!!

I came for take-out & for staying. Take-out is definitely the way to go. Service isnt good once u sit, but the lady at the front makes u feel welcome and is so sweet. I saw another yelper say this already, but, she will hold ur hand if u are staying in. Food is always good here. Never bad as far as comfort food goes. Typical place, but worth trying.

  • Suz B.

This place is wonderful. I go there for their egg rolls, which are the best I have ever had, and eat at the bar watching the new huge TV, or I order take out and pick it up on the way home. When with someone else order two main dishes and expect to have a lot of left overs to take home. If you want Kung Pow, make sure you tell them you like it 'hot' or 'very hot' as they are light on the spice unless they know you can bear it. "Mom" is very welcoming and enjoys visiting with the visitors, regulars or first timers, she likes them all. I would not hesitate to take anyone here!

The Good: I can't really give this place a full on review. Why? I was hungry for some Chinese food but only wanted some fried rice, so that's all I got. The beef fried rice was really good, I'll go back whenever the crave for fried rice hits me again. There seems to be a good selection of food and the people were really friendly. I placed my order and within a few minutes I had my food. Wow, that wok must have be fired up on high. The Bad: When I first walked up to the place I thought it was out of business. There is like a double door you have to walk through and that area is pretty empty. Then you walk into the main restaurant lobby. The price for food is on the higher side, but just slightly. There is no delivery, which I live on. The Ben: I went here after work around 6ish and the place was pretty empty. Either it was a slow day or people just don't know how good this place is yet. I'll be back and trying a ton of different food......gotta love the Chinese food. Oh yeah...it's Mandarin style :)

  • Rose B.

I've been going to this place for years. To be honest, it is not my "go-to" for Chinese food. I find it sufficient when I'm really hungry and looking for some decent Chinese take-out. The portions are great size and will definitely leave you full. The taste on the other hand is just ok. When I do order food from here, I generally stick with one of their beef dishes (mushroom beef or szechuan beef aren't bad) and their chow mein. If you are a fan of Kung Pao, do not order it from here. They deep fry their shrimp/beef/etc/ in a breading and it is not tasty at all. This place is not horrible - the workers are very nice and the old lady Mama is a sweetheart and always friendly. Service is great, just not the best Chinese in the area if you ask me.

Ate at Golden Dragon tonight after doing some Yelp research on local Chinese restaurants where I could get my Sunday night mix. The meal was extremely memorable, but for all the wrong reasons. In my life, I have never eaten a single other Chinese meal that was worse. Nothing about the food here is good. In fact it's horrid. The pan fried dumplings may be the single worst dumplings in the entire planet. Literally. After eating at this restaurant I contemplated suicide. do yourself a favor and don't go. I can't have it on my conscience.

As soon as you walk in your greeted with open arms by the most wonderful loving woman! Best Chinese in our area at decent prices. My family absolutely loves it here! Our favorites: Sweet and sour chicken and chicken fried rice. The sweet and sour chicken is not too sweet and the chicken is a little on the crunchy side, not soggy at all. We won't eat anywhere else for Chinese. This place beats them all! You won't regret eating here. It's a complete pleasurable experience.

  • Maria M.

The service is amazing. I love the food. Love Mama. Personally, I prefer orange beef, it's better than the orange chicken. The dish I always come here for though is the Sizzling Rice Soup. Best soup I've ever had. I highly recommend it. The green tea ice cream is delicious as well. I am a fan. Best Chinese I've ever had.

I was in the mood for Chinese food and did a Yelp search of nearby establishments, ending up here. We were greeted at the door with a hug by a little, older Asian woman. Who does that now a days...it was awesome! The menu has all the usuals and the prices are great. I got the egg foo young and shared the beef and asparagus. The food was freshly prepared and served in nano-seconds - piping hot! Tip: Next time, I'll order a shrimp dish as I saw a lot of people eating them in various forms, all of which were huge and delicious looking. The ambiance is typical Chinese restaurant, but the service and the food make it an above average place.

Was not sure what to order and ended up with some appetizer platter and aromatic shrimp. Shrimp was real good and I'd definitely order again. Appetizer platter.............not so much. I liked the won tons but was just not feelin the ribs and little dumplings. I'm a sucker for fast food chinese so I am not sure you could convince me to go back. Butttt on the other hand I could always go for mass amounts of chinese food.

Just ordered take out. We got the lettuce cups with no chicken. It was like mushroom soup you put in lettuce. Terrible. We also got the Orange Peel Shrimp. This was pretty much a bunch of batter balls with a sticky sauce that had no spice. The shrimp was a little tasty if you could find it. My girlfriend likes Egg Foo Young so we went for that. It was like a Outback Steakhouse Blooomin Onion chopped in pieces with no other vegetable and a terrible gravy. Zero flavor. So gross. The floating peas in the gravy were a nice touch though. We also got the vegetable fried rice. How do you mess that up? Well you can start by not actually frying it in anything. Then you can add zero spice. Boom bam . There wasnt enough soy sauce in the bag to make this meel earn two stars. I dont know how this place has stayed in business for 36 years. Maybe I should be fair and say that we did read it was more American/Chinese and should have taken into account that Americans dont like any spice and love fried everything.

We got there around 1 and the place smelled wonderful. The dining space was clean and all the staff was friendly. Their lunch meals are huge portions. I had the broccoli beef and the beef was super tender. My boyfriend had the cashew chicken and the chicken was tender too. I am looking forward to going back and trying other things.

We got a side of garlic broccoli spinach ($8) and the orange peel chicken ($10). Both were really good. The rice was served in a bowl, and it didn't look appealing. I've had better. The total was $23.33 for two people. This is the most expensive Chinese restaurant that I've ever been to, and the food is about the same. I loved coming in with a warm welcome from the elderly woman. The waiter was bored, because he would visit our table and take plates away (even when we weren't done) without asking. The water was always filled and I drank A LOT of water.

I am very picky when it comes to my Chinese restaurants, there are only 3 in costa mesa that i will eat at and this is one of them, the food is good (try the jumbo egg-rolls ) the service there is fine, very friendly the grandma loves to hold your hand while she takes you to be seated. I think the people who give this place a negative review either A. just ordered the wrong thing or B. have no taste buds. most of them probably think panda express is fine dinning.

I arrived at this place one afternoon when I was craving Chinese food. First of all, the location was somewhat hidden, you HAVE TO actually look for the RESTAURANT SIGN. The cool thing about this place was the portion size...the PORTIONS ARE HUGE! At first, I was a lil hesitant, a meal for about $10?? NO WAY!! BUT THEN WHEN I GOT THE FOOD...it wasnt that bad! The food tasted good as well. A THING THAT EVERYONE MUST ORDER IS THE HOT AND SOUR SOUP!! UNTIL THEN!! ^-^

Order: Sizzling Rice Soup, Shrimp with Lobster Sauce Pros: Cheap, they don't sweep you out when it's close to closing time (they'll even go as far as letting people in AT closing hour), fried wontons come with meal, lunch special deals, swift service, big pot of jasmine tea, Sizzling Rice Soup (Veg) comes piping hot and with enough vegetables to get you full, Lobster sauce is thick and flavorful (though I thought it needed pepper). Cons: Egg rolls were lacking meat (it's mostly vegetables) though they are fairly large, fried rice is atypical of an "authentic" Chinese restaurant (not saying it's bad, just not amazing as it usually is), limited selection on the lunch specials specifically, the overall menu doesn't reflect the variety and vastness of Chinese cuisine in general. Overall: I'm from the bay area--also meaning, Chinatown is just a 10-15 minute drive away. I also worked at a Chinese restaurant in high school. My expectations of Chinese food are probably higher than what the beach cities of Orange County could ever possibly offer. Are there better Chinese restaurants? Yes--to a point where this establishment would look like a one star. Are there much better in the area? No. 3.5 stars. I'll bump to a 4 once I try their dinner options.

  • Melanie M.

Ordered to-go. The food was WAY TOO greasy. The Orange Beef was in about 1 inch thick batter (honestly) All the sauces were goopy and thick. Sorry but there are way better options out there.

Just the way Chinese food has always been to me: syrup-y sweet, saucy, unhealthy. Yum yum. I had Moo Shu shrimp and it was delicious. I will go back when I want my dinner and dessert served as one. Everything else looked great- bright colored sauces and meat, meat, meat. Fat food!

This is the warm, friendly, American-Chinese restaurant you can always take your family to because they have a huge menu and friendly servers and everyone is guaranteed to have a good time and find something to eat. Plus they have a full bar and some crazy drinks like one that comes in a huge bowl with a flaming volcano in the center, so that's fun. The food is good, pretty standard for this type of Chinese restaurant. The moo shu pork was just right, a good blend of sweet and salty. Wor wonton soup was very hearty, if a bit salty. The won tons were nice and big and flavorful. The "lemony" chicken was tasty, though the sauce wasn't so much "lemon" as something resembling sweet and sour sauce. Overall this was quite a pleasant experience. Can't believe Golden Dragon is around the corner from my house and this is the first time I've been there, but I'm sure it won't be the last.

This is more of an American/Chinese style food. That being said, it's done well and the food has been solid, with some minor exceptions. Recently, we took 12 people for a grad celebration. The food came out hot and tasty (despite of all the others there celebrating).Drinks are strong and they have Chinese beer - a plus. I like the fact that they have been in business for a long long time and the warmhearted personal touch of the owners is very refreshing.

3.5 - stars (but not enough to gain 4) Was worried when we walked in and the place was empty. Soon after we ordered people started straggling in (around 4pm), I was quickly eased when a family of five weighing 200+ lbs.walked in.... Synposis: ~$44 2 entrees + 1 drink & an appetizer. Appetizers platter: ribs, wontons (too greasy), some meat patty thing, & shrimp tempura (the best of all 4) Walnut shrimp (pretty good, but could have used more sauce) Sweet and Sour Chicken (pretty good despite the misleading menu - it says "Sweet and Soup Chicken" FOBs lol) We took home left overs, waaaay too much food for 2 people. Will I go back? Probably, it really wasn't too bad and if I can't find a better Chinese location in the area I'm pretty sure I will. Oh, and the hot tea was a nice bonus on a blustery day. Oh, they also have a area that they rent out. A birthday party? was getting set up when we left.

I have loved their vegetable fried rice and wontons for the last 18 years. The owners are very nice and I love coming here. I always get to-go orders and no matter how much food we order it's always ready in about 10-15 minutes! My favorite Chinese restaraunt ever. Highly recommend.

Chinese food done right. Haven't had anything bad at this place and that's saying something as most Chinese food places around here aren't so good. The safe is nice, on cold nights they keep the hot tea coming. They serve good Chinese beer and the price is fair for everything you get. Sure the decor is outdated but you're there for the food.

I've been meaning to review Golden Dragon for awhile. It is by the far the best Chinese food I've had in California. Prices are a bit more expensive than other places, but worth it. Orange chicken is amazing. Restaurant is big with booths and lots of tables. I like take out better than eating in. I find the waiters to be a hit or miss in the restaurant, but they are always friendly at the front greeting you. I've had two waiters that were very standoffish. Either way, love the food and keep going back.

I first became acquainted with Golden Dragon at a number of family functions on my boyfriend's dad's side of the family. They're all huge fans of this place, so they often get huge family-sized take-out orders for various holidays, birthdays, etc. Recently, my boyfriend's grandparent's celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, and we rented out the banquet room in the restaurant. Apparently, this is a mom-and-pop type joint that's been open for over 30 years, and my boyfriend's family have been faithful patrons ever since they opened. Generations and generations of people in his family have been introduced to the awesomeness that is Golden Dragon. The servers were super attentive the night we went in, which I suppose is to be expected since we were paying good money to hold a party there. We had about 9 people at our table, and there were still tons of leftovers to take home. They started us off with Peking Duck, which was super moist and tender. It came with these little bun-type morsels that you'd fill with duck, a dipping sauce, and some veggies. The whole combination of flavors...oh so scrumptious! Next came the vegetable bean curd soup, which featured tofu, snow peas, black mushrooms, cabbage, and carrots...totally up my alley! Our entrees included honey walnut shrimp, fish with garlic black bean sauce, chow mein, rice, and several other tasty and delectable items. I left this place so full that I had to unbutton my pants in the car. Costa Mesa is a bit far for me to drive for Chinese food (as I live in Fullerton), but if I'm in the area, I'll definitely make it a point to stop by!

  • Heather M.

The meal we ordered from here tonight was gross, greasy and tasteless. The hot and sour soup was quite good...the only redeeming quality of the whole dinner. Everything we ordered was over cooked. Not one crunchy vegetable or crispy chicken or dumpling. It's really just a huge gut bomb and not at all worth the consumption. I wish I could throw up what I attempted eating besides the hot and sour soup. If you want good Chinese just save it for a day when you're out in LA. Even P.F. Chang's is better than Golden Dragon. Please don't waste your time or money.

This review is torn between a 3 and a 4, so I'll just round up. This place is good for what it is, Americanized Chinese food. It's authentic alright... authentic as Hispanics in the kitchen making Chinese food at Panda Express. Why did I give it such a good rating? Reasonably priced lunch specials, fast and friendly service, interesting decor, plenty of parking, clean, and spacious. The food will fill you up but my Asian taste buds weren't fooled one bit.

Oh boy oh boy, I so wanted to like this place but I have to be honest to all my fellow yelpers....this place should of closed down 25 years ago! I don't understand how all of you who ranted and raved over the sizzling rice soup could of actually enjoy that sewer tasting water with a bit fried rice floating on top ( God I hope it was rice that I ate...) OMG, I thought it was one fukd up soup if you ask me! Excuse me Chinese..... Man, you dumb a$$'s would probably think my dog's water bowl is a gourmet soup if I served it to you in a chinese bowl.....Please, for your sake, skip this place! It's indeed useless and the decor is a retro 80s disaster. NEXT!

I stopped coming here because I thought they were out of business! It seems like every time I've tried to make it here, they're always closed. Maybe I keep trying to go on a Sunday and they're not open Sundays (?) not sure. Unable to find hours open on their website or here on yelp. Well, if you're lucky enough to get here when they are open and you like shrimp, I can highly recommend their Peking Shrimp. It's not on their menu. It's lightly battered shrimp in a spicy sweet sauce, surrounded by a bunch broccoli. It is plenty for two people to share! I've tried similar dishes at other Chinese restaurants and no one ever comes close to the taste or the portion-size you get here. On top of that, the lady who is the owner I think - is SO friendly and sweet. She always greets you like she's known you for years and is so happy to see you! When you leave, she usually says, "see you tomorrow." :)

My husband and 4yr old went there tonight after reading reviews on Yelp. We loved it! It's your typical Chinese restaurant inside but the owner came to every table and greeted all his customers. There were families to grandparents there eating. The dining room was full but we didn't have to wait. Very affordable!! They have combination meals for $9.99 that's so filling. I got orange chicken that came with rice, egg roll and wonton and I actually ate it all. I think this is our new Chinese spot!

I have been going to Golden Dragon for about 15 years and the food is always great!!! It taste the same everytime which is a big deal for me. I love consistent places. The egg foo yung, sweet and sour pork, and kung pao shrimp are all tasty!!! My favorite chinese food in OC for sure!!!

  • Diana T.

The food is really good my one and only problem is that they are not all that vegetarian friendly. They have a vegetarian menu but you end up paying more for it than the regular food. It also REALLY bugs me that they have a vegetarian option on their dinner combo menu but don't allow you to substitute in a vegetable soup. I had the veggie delight with steamed rice and my mom had one of the dinner combo meals, my meal was $10.45 and hers was $8.45...

I've never had anything but a good experience here. Everyone is extremely friendly and welcoming. The food has always been good, the service is even better. This is my chinese restaurant of choice and I will keep coming back anytime I'm in the mood for wontons, asparagus chicken, or beef chow mein.

Since we just moved to Costa Mesa from the land of excellent Chinese food, the first thing we had to do was find a great Chinese take-out spot. Golden Dragon made the cut. We really enjoyed our Orange Peel Chicken and Mongolian Beef, although there was an overload of onions with the beef. Despite that small issue, we were excited to discover this place and I'm anxious to try other menu items. Update: I ate here the other night and had a great experience! The service was fantastic and I love the grandmotherly woman who runs the place. She is a doll. The sizzling rice soup, appetizer platter, and aromatic shrimp were absolutely delicious. The one downside was the wait to be seated. This place gets busy!

Best Chinese food in Orange County (besides Fu-Wing Low in Fountain Valley) The sweet and sour pork is excellent. The eggflower soup is great too. Everything about this place is great. I love Golden Dragon and I will continue to eat here any chance I get.

I'd have to agree with Troy H.'s review. Remember that Olive Garden commercial, where this Italian guy's relatives comes to visit from Italy, and the first place he takes them is to Olive Garden...well it's pretty much the case here! My Italian co-worker (who is more AzN than I am) took me and another HK ex-co-worker here. I've heard so much about this place from him, because he raves about this place. They have the elder Asian woman owner greet you with a fist bump up front. Sadly I realized this lady is KOREAN! Well, unconfirmed..but the first thing she asks when she saw me was, "you Korean?" and you get the sense, that she was hoping I'd say yes so she can converse with me in Korean. Anyways, the food here is very Americanized. I wasn't expecting much from here, but I know it would meet the expectations of the "Americanized" palate. The food here is half-way decent. They have family plans, where it's like $15 per person, and they just give you many dishes. The Mongolian beef is really here, while the Shanghai shrimp (it even cost more) was very bad, and not what you expect! It's not bad here, but it's not something I'd prefer so hence the lower than average score given by myself! Come here if you want to bring your non-authentic Chinese guests. I sure won't bring my parents here, but maybe 3rd gen Asian family in the future!

The first time we came to Golden Dragon, we did so because the reviews were so great! And even though the food was just so/so, we came back a second time because the staff was so friendly! Unfortunately, the second time was terrible! I don't remember what it was called, but I ordered some sort of mushroom and broccoli meal, in brown sauce. I am a mushroom fanatic, never met one I didn't like, until I came here...FYI, they taste like SHIT! I had them add tofu and that was decent, but the rest of it tasted overcooked and I really didn't love the sauce(However, the sauce may have just been a personal preference thing). My man had the orange beef, he said it wasn't the worst he's tasted, but was pretty sub-par for how much they charge. He said the beef was very gritty and chewy and the sauce was bland. So, I mean even after the food kinda bringing the suck, and paying about ten bucks each, for pretty poor quality food, we probably would have given the GD another shot. Except then, our waitress who had already commented on how she couldn't believe how much I ate, yeah not exactly the most polite thing to say to a woman, bent over our table TWICE and looked at our bill, in a very obvious attempt to see how much we left for a tip. Yeah, that is like the biggest party foul in my book, especially considering we tipped over 20% for this shiteous experience! It's pretty safe to say I'm gonna stick to Al Palace from now on.

The best Chinese food Ive had in Orange County. This is a place that you only would go to if someone told you about it. But afterward would realize you've found the diamond in the rough. I live in South County now and make at least one trip a month to eat here! Get multiple things and share so you can try it all. Aromatic Shrimp is my favorite!!! When the older lady who owns it leads you to the table she holds your hand. And it's not uncomfortable. You realize she loves her business and cares about her patrons.

DELIGHTFUL! Consistently delicious, the Golden Dragon provides me with perfect comfort food that is the best balance of delicious American Chinese food and affordable. Not too greasy or salty, but a satisfying amount of both. Portions are generous and prices are GREAT. Recommended by me, a nonlocal vegan who heads here as soon as I enter SoCal: garlic green beans; bean curd and vegetables. I literally have dreams about these dishes Recommended by nonvegan friends who frequent Golden Dragon as much as possible: hot and sour soup; garlic shrimp; green pepper chicken (PS, person at the who said there is no lunch menu?! - there is most definitely a lunch menu with lunch prices and portion sizes BUT only available for a limited amount of time each day)

I drive all the way to this resturant because of yelp reviews and I have to be honest I wish I hadent. First Its too expensive. And second I didnt like the food. I got cashew chicken and was very disapointed. If you like cashew chicken as much as i do, DONT go here.

Me, the mister and my outlaws went to the GD again. Being Friday night, it was quite busy. I was taken by the hand by the elderly lady at the front. She made us all feel so very welcome. We ordered fried pot stickers to start. They have changed a bit on how they serve the ginger and vinegar, but, as usual, they were great. We then had the Egg Foo Yong, Moo Shu Pork, Walnut Chicken and Kung Pao Beef. I know there are detractors on this site about their egg foo, but I am a big fan of it here. The waiter even asked us when we ordered it if we had had it before as they do do it differently. Yes and we love it!!! The only thing we hadnt had here before was the Kung Pao Beef. I commented to the waiter when it was served "What's this?" "Kung Pao Beff" "No, really, what's this?" Kung Pao Beef, we do it differently." It was different, but very tasty. This place is a favorite because the service is great, the staff welcoming and the food better than most. Just have an open mind with your open mouth and the experience will be good!

Well, it was the first time we've eaten there in years, but they have amazing food. It's a secret, but if you ask for the shrimp toast, you'll be treated to something good--not on menu!! Mama's food was always fresh and delicious--something we drove for miles to eat. She always makes you feel like family and makes sure you like your food. Give it another chance if you have an off time. Call and let Mama know..Thanks.

This place treats me like family. This little lady always hugs me when I come in. The food is pretty delicious, but it was odd only once. My Mu Shu Pork was already wrapped for me. Not like some places when you make your own burrito. It didn't taste different, just odd that they made it for me. hmmm But I always have great left overs the next day. Thanks golden dragon!

very traditional looking asian joint inside. nontraditional friendly service! came with 3 others for lunch and sampled quite a bit - they have a huge menu, so it's difficult to size up everything, but we tried anyway! Started out with the crackling rice soup - very savory and flavorful, little need for any seasoning. hearty with a good amount of chicken and shrimp, and fried rice poured in at the table. then we ordered 4 a la carte dishes: kung pao chicken (just OK, not much flavor), beef and green beans (beef had a strange flavor, but beans were tasty), honey walnut shrimp (GOOD with a different consistency sauce on the shrimp that was savory and sweet at the same time), and orange chicken (EXCELLENT, best i've ever had, crispy and full of flavor). oh yeah, and steamed rice (steamed!). really have to check it out for the service - it is unexpected in an asian restaurant!

My family just moved to Costa Mesa, and find this Chinses restaurant has high rating online. But we are so disappointed after our first dinner, the interior is dirty, the food is awful, I will say it's the worst in the area, the shrimp is not fresh, the chiken is so hard and greasy, soup is salty. The owner is very friendly, said "see you tomorrow" when we walked out the door, but we will never come back again. China Gourmet is much better!!

I have been going to Golden Dragon for over 20 years now. When Mama was there full time she would hug you and smile and say "See you Tomorrow!". It is a well run great food good value and good atmosphere! They even do special requests like my Spicy Shrimp Fried Rice with extra Bean Sprouts! One of my all time favorites. I have been known to drive to CM to get some when I lived in South County. It is THAT GOOD!

Golden Dragon is my favorite Chinese restaurant to date in Orange County. The owner and family are very friendly, always stop by to see how you're doing and crack a joke. Their wor wonton soup is usually very, very good...it varies from day to day depending on how busy they are, sometimes it's almost thick with porky goodness and other times it's almost clear. The eggrolls are big and crisp, but sometimes very greasy, watch out! The fried shrimp, not so good. Very bland. Okay as sweet and sour, but not by itself. Don't bother. The kung pao has more vegetables than most places around here, lotus root, I think chopped bamboo, etc. Darker, less sticky. Good stuff. The moo shu shrimp is very tasty, but again can be on the greasy side. Great flavor. What is it that turns the egg orange? I don't even know, but it tastes so good. I'm not a big fan of sweet and sour anything but I like the lemon chicken, breasts breaded and fried, chopped into strips, and served with bright lemony sauce and some peas (but it works!). It's a good place to come on weekends when everything else is packed, even when they're busy there's a spot for you. Good service, well-trained staff, fast turnover of tables (the busboy has his own technique that will clear and reset a table in under a minute flat), and yes, full service bar. Yum!

Love this place. My husband, myself, my friends and guests have been coming here for 15 yrs. My absolute fav is honey walnut shrimp with a side of spinich, garlic, snowpeas. The eggrolls are amazing and the service is impeccable. Greeted at the door as an old friend from day one. I actually booked a party for 65 friends here awhile back and could not have been treated to more wonderful food and service. I would highly recommend. A wonderful family place!

We popped into this place about a half hour before closing a couple Saturday nights ago after reading the positive reviews on Yelp. The plan was carryout, but the grandmotherly hostess was so sweet and convinced us to eat in, leading me by the hand to our table. Service was quick and efficient. There was only one other table seated and another party that came in just after us. While it was clear that they were preparing to close for the evening, we didn't feel the least bit rushed, and no one was sweeping or wiping around us, which I detest. We settled on the hot and sour soup, the lemon chicken, and the orange peel chicken. (It was a fruity chicken kind of night, I guess.) The hot and sour soup was fantastic, easily the best I've had. While the quality of the meat was superb in both dishes, the orange peel chicken was significantly tastier than the lemon chicken, which was a little dry. I spotted a lot of tasty-looking dishes on surrounding tables, so I'm eager to come back and try additional menu items. It's great to know that this place exists- while Al Palace is great for carryout, most of the other places around that are more conducive to sitting down are buffet or just plain not good. I'll definitely be back!

I have been coming here since I was little(when the owner use to take us into the back and let us pick out gum and fortune cookies in the bins), and when I am near Newport Beach ( and am not in the mood for Taco Mesa-which is rare) I stop here and order moo shu chicken or vegetable egg foo young. Hot and sour soup with no pork is delicious. The little old lady that runs the place is the absolute nicest and is so customer friendly. It really is the best chinese restaurant around-if you like authentic Chinese food that is clean, not really oily and serves white meat chicken. Staff is great. I just love it here.

I've been eating here since I was a kid - your mileage may vary. Family owned, and the family members are super entertaining & about 50% of the experience. All of the appetizers are the most spectacular americanized white boy chinese food on mother earth. The egg rolls with some of that super pink "duck sauce" (sweet and sour sauce but way on the super sweet side). Man.. it's tasty though. But if you happen to be dating a Chinese girl or something you may want to never take her here because it is about as authentic as Taco Bell is to Mexican Food and she will leave you immediately. Just sayin...

This is a classic Chinese food restaurant and should be a staple in your diet. I have eaten lots of chinese in socal and GD is the most consistent and reliable place I've found in my time on the west coast. The prices are low, the portion size is ample and the service is friendly. The decor hasn't been changed since they opened the joint so it has a comfortable feel. Its great for take out or for dining with some friends. Nothing helps a hangover like a GD lunch.

  • Kevin H.

Pretty darn good Chinese food.... ... in the opinion of this white boy. I have liked everything I have had here with the exception of the Walnut Shrimp but then again I don't like that anywhere, too sweet. I am a big fan of the paper wrapped chicken appetizer, nice and flavorful. My one complaint would be my last trip, ordered wonton soup, and received not a one wonton! Just broth, very sad. Otherwise the staff is friendly and attentive, the atmosphere is great, and it is an all around pleasurable dining experience. Come on in, order a whole mess of food, and if you don't enjoy it, order a Scorpion, drink it down, and you won't remember it at all the next day I promise. How can you go wrong with a giant alcoholic beverage served in a bowl and lit on fire? Thats right, you can't.

Americanized Chinese food at its best. Large portions, great flavors and great prices. My wife loves the wor-wonton soup and the small is a huge portion. I enjoy the kung pao chicken and the schezuan beef. Service is good, and the food makes up for any delays. I also do take out from here and that makes it even better!

Not too familiar with the Orange County Chinese eateries, I went onto yelp to find a yummy Chinese restaurant my boyfriend and I could order take out from. After careful scrutiny and finding out which restaurant would deliver, we decided on Golden Dragon based on reviews and closeness. We ordered the egg flower soup, chicken with cashew, brocoli beef, steamed rice, and chicken fried rice. Overall the food was decent, but not the best chinese food I have tasted. I am a huge fan of Chinese soups and the egg flower soup was pretty good. They had pieces of water chestnut in the soup, which was a nice addition. The chicken cashew was okay, not enough cashews and the flavor was also not sweet enough for my taste. The brocoli beef was good, but average as well. I don't think I would order again from this restaurant, but overall it did the job for dinner that night. Also to note...they use a delivery service called Gourmet Shuttle, it's worth checking out. They have a lot of different restaurants they deliver food from.

Golden Dragon is a typical Chinese type food restaurant. They give large portions and have very tasty food. I have gone back several times. Its a place I keep in the back of my head but don't frequent often, but when I do I'm usually pretty happy with what I get.

Some of the best chinese food I have eaten anywhere. Stumbled into it when looking for a place to eat and we ate there three times in the week we were there. I love the egg rolls and the honey walnut prawns were awesome. Even though we came in 20 minutes before closing the first time they welcomed us and never made us feel rushed. I will be making it a point to go there again when I am in SoCal again.

Very comfortable surroundings in an old fashioned style Chinese restaurant. Large number of seats with an adjoining banquet room means that I have never had to wait for a table even on a Saturday evening with the parking lot packed. Service is always brisk. Although they do offer take out, I recommend dining in. Their take-out for some reason always seems to be a disappointment. Recommended soups are Wor Wonton soup or sizzling rice soup. Both are based on a deep flavorful broth, I recommend adding a little chili oil to each bowl to introduce some fire to the rich stock. Also try the egg rolls, these are large, not spring roll style, and come with duck sauce, hot mustard, and ketchup (yuck). My wife likes hers with soy sauce and hot mustard. Recommended entrees I've had include Kung Pao Chicken, Moo Shu Shrimp (or Pork), Schezuan shredded pork, lemon chicken (not my favorite, for those with milder tastes), beef and broccoli, and shrimp fried rice. Overall, consistently very good food, always easy (no waiting hassle), so it's my favorite dine-in Chinese restaurant in Costa Mesa.

I always get chicken with Hong Kong style Noodle and share a second variable plate. I live close and have tried most of the items on the menu, and have never been disappointed! If you have a problem with Golden Dragon Chinese food, it's because you don't know what Chinese food is! I was so happy to find this place because it is AUTHENTIC and close to me. I am tired of Americanized garbage calling itself Chinese food, like Panda Express and such. I am really at a 4.5 with Golden Dragon because on top of good food they have excellent service!

Fail. Tried this place based on its positive Yelp rating, and I was not only underwhelmed, but offended! The waiter who attended us could not have been ruder. He treated us in a very surly manner, pretty much throwing down our cups and plates on the table. When he walked by, he made it a point to not make eye contact so as to avoid attending us, he never once asked if we needed anything else. To top it off, the food was nothing spectacular, just mediocre dishes you can find any where else. One of the worst experiences I've had. Avoid this dump!

What a great place. Ignoring all the flavorful food for a moment, the welcome you get at this place is wonderful thing you rarely find anymore. We've been eating in and taking out from the Golden Dragon for years, our personal favorite being the Aromatic Shrimp and the Veggie Mushu. But really I've found that nothing from the Golden Dragon is bad. Sure there are some things that I've like more than others, but none of it has been less than satisfactory. The hot tea served at your table has an almost addictive property as do the crab cheese wontons. The family atmosphere is what really set's this place apart. On most nights "Mom" will welcome you at the door and take you by the hand to your table. You get the impression that their food and the way they run their business is a matter of personal pride. "See You Tomorrow"

4 Stars is a little generous, it probably deserves 3 1/2 instead, but that isn't an option. They are pretty consistent, haven't had a bad meal here, but haven't had an outstanding one either. They fill my need when i crave Chinese food and don't want to drive into China Town or to one of my other favorite Chinese places. Atmosphere is pretty much same as other Americanized Chinese places except it's a bit darker inside. Speed of food service does vary, sometimes you order and a few mins later it's on your table, or sometimes you wait 10-15 mins. One odd thing, my wife and I usually go for lunch on a Saturday or Sunday. They are usually very very empty inside. From what i've heard, during the week for lunch and dinner, they are packed. Pricing is a little more than average, but not overly expensive.

They serve old time Chinese food dumbed down for a tame palette. Portions are enormous and the waiter won't warn you that you might have too big of an order. If you like these features, then stop reading now;) Asparagus and mushrooms looked good but were like slippery rubber. Martini was good, but olive was old and ... rubbery. Crispy Spicy Shrimp were good, but turned soggy in a minute and only spicy if mopped in the bed of sauce, hence the quick sog factor. The eggrolls were not the kind we like, that's for sure. They are very large, like a mini burrito, so big they come cut into three pieces. The filling is mostly cabbage with a few teeny pieces of ground chicken. We had a second entree, it was so bland I cant even remember what it was. $100 for two entrees, two drinks, one veg and two eggrolls and none of it worth taking home for leftovers. The mother-owner who wants to hug you or hold your hand all the way to your table was odd. After she finally let go of my hand, she hand wiped her nose. Not going back.

I super love the owner lady's friendly greeting every time I come to this restaurant (including when I just come in for a take out order XD) You get a greeting fit for a long lost relative. The food is excellent. You can order a individual items, or do a family meal sets. So far everything I have tried is good. It's not the best Chinese food ever, but certainly going to get a "let's go!" vote from me if someone suggests it. Unlike a lot of other Chinese restaurants, not every half inch is covered in gold colored decor and extravagant displays, but it's certainly a nice place to take my friends and family and comfortable sitting there, chatting with your company., Plus the food is not completely overpriced like those places with the extravagant decor. They've also been there for 36 years, so obviously they're doing something right with this place!

I love this place! They make you feel right at home, they are so warm and welcoming! The shrimp fried rice is my favorite, I also love walnut shrimp and Orange chicken! They aren't greedy with their hot sauce so that's a plus, since we are Mexican!! Its sooo yummy! Food comes to your table super fast!

Love the service here! The staff is so warm and welcoming I felt like I was eating at a relatives house! As soon as we walked in the lady greeted us as if we were regulars and escorted us to the table by hand. We ordered honey walnut shrimp and it was pretty good. It was still crispy and had a nice glaze which was good and bad. Good that it was tasty, bad that it cut up the roof of my mouth! My own fault since I can't wait for my food to cool down and I can't eat that good stuff slowly haha Our server came back a bit too often to check up on us, but there were only three other tables occupied. We'll probably be coming back...the lady that greeted us is expecting to see us tomorrow! =]

I think I just had the best Chinese food in town!! I like to order take out about once a week and have been rotating between two other Chinese restaurants but now that I've found Golden Dragon - this will be the place!! Orange Chicken had big pieces of white meat it was so fresh and high quality meat. The Mongolian Beef had lots of shaved beef and we also ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp Fried rice. I went for thirds on every dish - YUM! Oh and the service was one to remember, the owner welcome us like family friends when we walked in the door. LOVE THIS PLACE!

The lady on the website is very nice! She held my GFs hand and walked us to the table. Very nice and unexpected of her, already we instantly was in a good environment and felt welcomed. We ordered the Wor Wonton which was really good. I like water chestnuts a lot. I wish it had a little more of that in my Wonton. Then had the Honey Walnut Shrimp (with Broccoli???). Uh, the Broccoli threw me off, so used to Honey Walnut Shrimp dish to be over a bed of lettuce. The Broccoli I wasn't too bothered by, yet I would have liked it if it were more steamed. The glaze of the Honey Walnut Shrimp was good, could need a little more mayo. The Shrimp itself was still crispy which was a plus. I would come back for more.

After trying to eat at three different pizza parlors on a busy Saturday night, my desperation level was high trying to find a restaurant in the area we were in. Based on Yelp, I decided to check out this restaurant. Upon entering, we we warmly greeted by a host and ushered to our table almost immediately. I observed quickly that despite all of the tables being occupied by happy diners, I was the only Chinese American diner, in fact the only Asian diner, in here eating. I was beginning to wonder........ We perused the menu, and the first thing I observed was that it was pretty much your what I would refer to as "Americanized" or mainstream Chinese fare, meaning nothing too exotic and pretty much the universal dishes most non-Chinese are familiar with. I guess there's nothing wrong with this since if this spectrum of food is cooked correctly, it can be quite good. I ordered a large bowl of the sizzling rice soup. I soon learned that my wife (who I started dating in 1992) who is not Chinese, has never had this soup as well as our two young sons, both who are picky eaters. I could see the look of dread on our two son's faces. I also ordered sweet and sour pork, snow peas w/mushrooms, honey walnut shrimp and chicken chow mein. The soup arrived and our friendly, yet professional waiter, served each of us our first bowl of soup. I just have to say that of all the hundreds of times/versions I've consumed this soup, I was impressed with the amount of meat they added to this soup. There was a lot of shrimp, chicken pieces and pork in every bowl served as well as second servings. Yeah, everyone loved the soup. The sweet and sour pork was one of the better ones I have eaten. The pork was lightly battered and not heavy or greasy. The sauce was was the screaming red but more of an orange red color and not overly sweet. Pretty good balance of flavors. The snow peas and mushrooms were tasty. A generous amount of mushrooms and snow peas sauteed served in a sauce probably based on oyster sauce. Our two sons focused only on the chow mein. I ordered 2 orders of this entree since I knew this would happen. It was not the pan fried noodle version, just the normal chow mein in a brown sauce. There was a generous amount of chicken. I remember growing up and even to this day when I eat chow mein, so many restaurants are so stingy with their meat addition, but not here. They are really generous with the meat. Overall the chow mein reminded me of home cooking style. The honeyed walnut shrimp was actually quite tasty. It's my wife's favorite and I tend to avoid this dish normally because every previous version I ever ate was like eating a fried ball of mayonnaise. I like my mayonnaise, but not to the point that it overpowers the shrimp and is just a greedy ball of yuk. Here, the shrimp have a alight coating then fried. They end up having a delicate coating that is light and not greasy. The shrimp was tender and juicy. The walnuts were nicely toasted and coated with the right amount of sweetness. As I ate, I observed the restaurant staff. It appeared that there are a lot of regulars that dine here, based on the warm greetings and interactions between the hostess an hosts. I mentioned to my wife that eating here, based on the food style and service, is like eating at a relative's home. A touching moment for us was when the hostess on her greeting rounds to each table arrived at ours and kissed our youngest son lightly on his head. This reminded me so much of one of their grandmothers doing the same thing. I was the only one who wanted steamed rice with my dinner, so it was nice to see the waiter bring me a large bowl of rice, and not the normal rice bowl size. I know the old adage about eating in Chinese restaurants and if you see a lot of Chinese folks eating there, but this restaurant has added a new addition to their family of diners. For the style of food they offer, pricing and most of all, the warm family feeling this restaurant staff exudes, our family will visit often whenever we are in the area. Our pre-tip bill, including 3 sodas, was approximately $76.

Have been here twice, and it's the best Chinese food in Costa Mesa. The food is tasty and fresh, and I love that the establishment is actually owned by a Chinese family. You do get the familiar, comfortable feeling of being greeted by family and people invested in the business doing well. It loses a star because they don't deliver. I really wish they did. :)

Been coming here since I was a little girl so maybe I'm biased but I absolutely LOVE this place. My favorite are the egg rolls! The food is so good and the service is even better. The food is good bla bla bla, everyone knows that Pick up Sticks is great. This particular location has a new girl working here and she is awesome. I stopped in on Saturday and picked up lunch for my employees, this new girl is the definition of customer service and I look forward to the next time I need a big to go order because I know it will be perfect. I wish I could remember her name and I hope the owners of this location realize what a great employee they have. If they don't, I will hire her and put her in one if my stores.

If you are going to a restaurant for glitz and glamor this is not the place for you. However, if you are going to eat, then this place has great food and very friendly service. I love the fried rice soup and the orange chicken. The price is also very reasonable for the quality of food that you get.

I love this place I have been coming here since 1988 I came here when I was dating my ex husband.through out the years including the birth of my daughters, after my divorce and finally when my daughter grew up all through the years the food has been wonderful.this is a family run business which is why its consistant. The matricarch of the family is know simply as "Mama" a charming cute chinese lady who remembers ALL if not all her regulars she loves to gives hugs..YOU always feel welcomed.MY favorite dishes are the walnut shrimp, lobster shrimp and the shrimp toast which isn't on the menu any longer but they will make it on request, the crispy duck is excellent too! There is a full bar if you feel like you want a cocktail.decore is nice soft lighting.a good family place or date place not romantic but then again with the right person any place can be romantic..lol triangle square is across the street go have dinner and see a movie after.GO enjoy you won't regret it unless you are an overly critical moron!..lol

Place has changes and so has the quality of food. Its decent but not as great as it was a couple years ago. The staff is still very friendly and the ambience as very "authentic". Then again there are plenty of other great Chinese restaurants in the area with equally decent service and ambience.

Truly wonderful Chinese Cuisine. My family and I have been dining here for 25 yearsand have enjoyed consistently excellent food over the years. The prices are fair, the portions are large and the service is usually very good. Friday and Saturday nights are very busy so you may have to wait. The food to go is served piping hot and almost always ready within 15 minutes. Highly recommended dishes include the special egg rolls, the sizzling rice soup (Theirs is absolutely the best I have ever had) The Honey walnut shrimp, The shrimp and black bean sauce, the sweet and sour chicken, the pork and black mushrooms, the sweet and sour chicken, and the house fried rice. Best of all you are warmly welcomed by the matriarch of the family who never seems to age and she always remembers you and knows exactly where you like to sit.. You are made to feel not like a special customer but actually like one of the family. They have a large back room which makes this restaurant an ideal place to celebrate large family gatherins, birthdays, anniversarys, etc.

When you go eat chinese, you expect them not to smile, dump a plate of whatever on your table, never come by to see if you're ok, and then you're on your way. This is the first chinese place I've been to where the service is top!!! The moment we sat down, water and a huge pot of jasmine tea. The server actually apologized for not coming to our table sooner. (not that it mattered we had only waited a few minutes) I asked if they put MSG and they said no, so that's a plus. The prices for the plates are a little bit pricey than I'm used to but they serve a lot of food, so you can be sure you've got left overs. The food is very good. I ordered the Hong Kong style Seafood Noodles and it was loaded with scallops, fish and shrimps and tons of vegetables!! Hubby ordered the chicken fried rice. Can't really screw that one up. All in all a really happy Chinese experience. I'm so glad I didn't have to go to Irvine to make my belly happy!

I have to tell you I really like this place! It starts with the hostess, who greets you like you are family, takes you by the hand and leads you to your table. When we finished our meal on our first visit, she hugged us on the way out and said, "See you tomorrow!' What's not to love? My favorite is the honey walnut shrimp. It's outstanding. Sizzling rice soup is also excellent. We stop here every time we're in Costa Mesa.

I practically grew up in this place. We've been going here for years. Only place I've ever had better Chinese food was in New York. The food is excellent, not greasy at all, and of course the service is the friendliest you can get. Mom is always there with a hug and sometimes even a kiss. And unlike other places, they have never once gotten my order wrong. As someone with a LOT of food allergies this means a lot to me. I don't know why people are whining about massage parlors, there isn't any. There's a very nice manicure salon next door, but NO "seedy massage parlors." They must've mixed it up with a different place. If you go for a birthday make sure to tell mom. She'll make the whole restaurant sing to you and you get free fried bananas. (Bananas wrapped in wonton and fried with a drizzle of chocolate sauce on top.) Though my favorite desert is the green tea ice cream. I often wish I could take a pint or more of it home. They have the best green tea ice cream I have ever tasted.

I love these folks here, the sweet old 'mama' is a riot, so friendly and happy to see and greet everyone I just love her! They. Are so nice and friendly everytime I come in. I actually have driven to some of the other local Chinese fast food places walked in and stared at their nasty old dry food under the hot lamps and turned right around and walked out to come to Golden Dragon. Maybe it's not as convenient as the other places since I tend to wait till I arrive at GD to order and have to wait a short time for my food to be cooked but at least I know it's fresh, good quality and cooked to order and packed up with love. It always gets pricey when I come here because I see something on the menu that looks good and end up ordering way too much food, lol. My only wish is they were late nighters like me, sometimes it's midnight when I want Chinese and they have long been closed by then. Try their orange chicken, almond chicken, any shrimp dish, you will love it all.

Our all time favorite Chinese food! Been going here nearly 30 years. Food has been consistently good and clean. Family-run restaurant where owners take great pride in their cooking. Don't be fooled by the strip-center surroundings--there is good food inside of this restaurant.

Great customer service. Friendly staff. My husband and I were looking for a local chinese food place in Costa Mesa and my friend recommended Golden Dragon. We were not disappointed! We LOVE the egg foo yung here. I'd like to describe it as a deep fried veggie dish in a shape that resembles mini cakes. Think of it as tempura veggies but compressed together with a side of gravy. It is quite excellent. Don't be scared and order it. Afterall it's just vegetables.

This place is a CLASSIC. Anyone who says anything different does not see the sun rise. It has been there forever. It is the fav for so many foodies when they have a Chinese Jones it is ridiculous. I can't begin to tell you all the reasons why this place is the bomb, from the table cloths to the staff that has been with them for decades. The owner and her sons are fun people that have earned there right to be called a Costa Mesa classic. I am sooo respectful when I go there because I know that this business is built on hard hard work. Sure, there are more exotic Asian restaurants, but if you want down home Chinese food, then go here and enjoy service like a fancy joint and absolute seriously great food. "See you Tomorrow". You'd get that last quote if you were a regular.

I have been searching for a good Chinese food restaurant for a year and have finally found it. Not only was the adorable grandma like lady that walked me hand-in-hand to the table extraordinary the food was great. I ordered the Egg Foo Young and Vegetable Chu Mien. The Egg Foo Young was not like any I've had before but it was the best! The Chu Mien was good, The portions are HUGE to watch how much you order because we had food for lunch and dinner the next day. I recommend this place if you are looking for a great Chinese food place.

Fried shrimp is a no brainer. Nice to see a restaurant with a lot of square footage too. Great for parties with kids, you can have your own separate space without interrupting the entire restaurant. My wife's family has been going there for about three decades so that's saying something.

I used to go here a few years back and thought I would take the family. Big mistake! - Service - 2 - food - 0. Too greasy. Pot stickers over cooked - atmosphere - 4. Surprisingly, the place was busy

The owner is incredibly friendly and welcoming! The dishes are hit or miss. Sometimes they are cooked to order and arrive on our table fresh and hot. But other times, the dishes we ordered have arrived colder and soggier, as if they been sitting out for awhile. In conclusion, when the dishes are fresh and hot they are very tasty and delicious. But when the food is older it does not taste as good. You just never really know what you are going to get.

Sigh... I'm EXTREMELY disappointed with this place. After reading all the Yelp reviews as well as the awards the restaurant received, I really expected a lot. However, I should have read closer. One of the reviews actually had this: "Rice is traditionally 'sticky', delicious when doused with soy sauce... " (see photo) Now, what self-respecting Chinese person would actually write this in a review? None. That newspaper review was not written by a Chinese person so now everyone knows what to expect, right? Well, too bad for me, I didn't read the thing before we were seated. We ordered the Sizzling Rice Soup (just as everyone had recommended), which was JUST ok; I've had better elsewhere. We also had Chicken Chow Mein (crispy noodles will cost you $4 more the soft noodle's price WTF?!) and the Honey Walnut... Chicken. The noodles are way oversauced with soy sauce. The Honey Walnut Chicken's flavor was actually enjoyable. I would have really enjoyed it if they used chicken cubes instead of thin strips of chicken fried to a crisp. As for the price, well, it's pricey. Like I said before, the chicken chow mein itself is $7.95. However, if you want it crispy, they won't do it for you because they tell you to order the one that's $11.95. The Honey Walnut Chicken is $11.95. Our total bill for me and my wife was $31 for lunch. Honestly, this place would not last in San Gabriel, Arcadia, Monterey Park or Chinatown. The prices are too high and their flavors aren't good enough to warrant a spot in those areas. I'll give them credit though, they know their market and cooks their food based on this market. As for me, I'll stay with chinese restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley.

The best won ton soup ever! And being Asian I do not say this lightly. The service and waiters here are some of the nicest and friendliest you'll ever find at a Chinese restaurant. The Orange Peel Chicken is to die for.

I've been eating here since 1989. Today, I celebrated my birthday here with my family and it is still one of my favorite restaurants. Grandma is always there to greet you with a smile and a hug. The food is constantly good and I've never left that place hungry. This makes it my 5th or 6th birthday dinner there in a row......awesome food.

Are you kidding me? I finally found an authentic and delicious Chinese restaurant in Costa Mesa!!! Usually I have do drive all the way to Chinatown in downtown LA to get this great of a meal. The staff is very friendly and they recognize the regulars who come in often. I ordered the mushroom chicken , mongolian beef, and walnut shrimp. The walnut shrimp is to DIE for. If you are in the area this place is a must try!!!!!

I used to live in San Francisco for 35 years and you can't beat the food there for all different types of Chinese cuisine from awful to sublime. Those yelpers that complain about the service and the noise have never been to an authentic Chinese restaurant on Stockton Street with hundreds of diners, noise level off the scale, and not big on service but the food or dim sum is to die for. It's just part of the culture and if you don't like that, don't go to a real Chinese place. We went today for lunch on New Year's Day and enjoyed it. The service was great and attentive. We had sauteed shrimp and szechuan chicken from the lunch menu. Portions were huge, a pet peeve of mine, so we took half of it home. I find that down here in OC, quantity seems to be more important than quality. Huge amounts of food, cheap and no flavor. Not true of this place for sure. Both dishes were done well, soup was excellent, and the mango sorbet and green tea ice cream both very good. It's salty but they will not salt it if you have dietary concerns, just tell the waiter. If you think Panda Express is Chinese food, then you won't like this place. Prices are reasonable, decor is very nice far from the usual hole in the wall, and restaurant was very clean as well as the restrooms. i would go again in a minute and try the dinner offerings. Holding off on the 5th star until I try dinner.

This place is a NO GO. I ordered slimy, mush orange chicken, shrimp smelling beef & broccoli in flavorless sauce & egg rolls. Honestly I was very excited to try this place, it even has a cool name. Whoever yelped it was NY style, get bent. I understand everyone makes things different, yes it get it, but his place is not good. The only way we powered through dinner was adding extra tangy orange sauce to everything. Even the egg roll pissed me off, fried to a beautiful golden brown, and then after a few bites, what the f*$% this is only cabbage! Finally, watch out for the hostess she is a grabber.

We love this place. The older lady who works there is the owner and she is like our grandma. She grabs my daughter's hand and leads her to the table like she is her own granddaughter. The food here is absolutely delicious I have never had a complaint. It can get a little pricey however if you do not watch it, but it is definitely well worth it. I am a repeat customer.

A nice little lunch stop. They still serve those crispy noodles as a complimentary appetizer with hot mustard and sweet n sour sauce to dip it in. Their paper wrapped chicken tasty and their steamed dumplings are good. The rest of the menu is fair, kinda Americanized Chinese food. I enjoy this place once in awhile. And it's not greasy...

The chicken that I am eating is absolutely delicious. The accompanying potatoes, gravy, corn and cheese are like glorious explosions of flavor in my mouth. Unfortunately, these are the leftovers from my KFC Famous mashed potato bowl from lunch. Even more unfortunate is that this is after my meal at Golden Dragon tonight. Living almost across the street, I had passed by Golden Dragon many times and had always brushed it off as nothing more than a sit-down Chinese takeout restaurant. As I had grown up in the new Chinatown of Southern California (the Rowland Heights San Gabriel Valley area), I am extremely familiar with authentic Chinese food and never even considered eating at Golden Dragon. However, after reading all these positive reviews on Yelp I thought that perhaps I was being a bit pretentious and should give the place a chance. Upon arriving at Golden Dragon with a friend, I noted that it had won several AOL CityGuide "best of" awards for the past few years. Seeing this as a promising sign, we ventured on in and was greeted by the same elderly hostess as described by the other yelpers. She took us to our table and left us to peruse the menu. Uh. Oh. The entire menu is in English. I don't mean to pass judgment or anything, but when an entire menu is in English, well, let's just say that this particular Chinese restaurant doesn't cater to native Chinese speakers. As such ... well the authenticity can be kind of questionable. While we were looking through the menu, one of the busboys brought tea and our table settings to us. Uh. Oh. With the tea came some ice water by default, along with forks. I could probably throw in another snooty comment here complaining about authenticity, but you get the idea. When the waiter arrived to take our orders, I asked if they had a tofu claypot, because I did not see it on the menu, and it's a Chinese staple. Unfortunately, I was denied. Drat. Well then I guess I can always go with white fish and Chinese broccoli. Um, what? No Chinese broccoli either? At this point, my heart sank. I ordered a white fish with mixed vegetables plate and a plate of bean sprouts and tried the wor wonton soup. The food was mediocre, and I'm not even sure what was in the wontons. It looked kind of like beef because it was so dark-colored (which I am totally not accustomed to) but I ate it anyway. There were some pieces of shrimp and bamboo shoots in the soup too but it wasn't really very good. Everything was pretty much just kind of salty. After everything including tip, it ended up being around $40 for the two entrees, the soup, and white rice. No drinks other than the standard tea. In the end, I won't go back here ever again. What really bothers me is that it has all these accolades from various places (right when I wrote this I looked on the AOL City Guide site and this place got panned - check it out). I give it two stars because I can't really rail on it too much for not being "authentic" or whatnot because I probably should have seen it coming. I couldn't give it three stars though, because the description for that is "A-OK" and Golden Dragon was definitely not that. For a takeout kind of place, it gets the job done and gives the kitschy - albeit kind of expensive for take-out food - dining experience for those who want to dine in. Golden Dragon is like a glorified and overpriced Magic Wok Hong Kong Kitchen Express and can't even hold a candle to a Chinese restaurant like Sam Woo (though there are many restaurants that are far superior to Sam Woo). In fact, I'd prefer to eat Panda Express over this place because honestly, I think Panda tastes better and they don't use MSG, which I'm pretty sure Golden Dragon does. But in the end, it's a moot point anyway because I mean, between those two, it's pretty much like choosing between Taco Bell and Del Taco for fine Mexican cuisine.

    (2)
  • Vernon F.

They serve up the best chinese food (this side of Sam Woo)! The service is the typical stereotype, but still undeniably friendly. They usher you in briskly to your table as their welcome, and attend to you like family. But best of all, after you've had your fill of the Aromatic Shrimp and are on your way out, instead of the usuall farewell and thank you, the invite you back with a "SEE YOU TOMORROW."

Ahhh the Golden Dragon. Such a typical name for such a non-typical amazing chinese food restaurant as oppose to the mediocre, same tasting food you get almost every where else. I have been going here since I was a tiny MAYGUN. Probably since I was about 3. I went here the other night for the first time in years and to my surprise, Mama Key (The very OLD, sweet owner) is still around! Star for that. The decor is very old school chinese restaurant-like and looks very much like it did when I was little but I think thats what I like. My boyfriend, Myself, His aunt and Nephew all shared dishes. We ordered Hong Kong seafood noodles, Beef and broccoli, Kung Pao Chicken, the special eggrolls, and Sauteed Asapargus and everything was BETTER than I remembered. SO YUMMY. I also got a Mai Tai which I could smell before I even drank...which is always a good thing. It was packed for a Monday night but still very good service and the owners like to stop by every table to say hi. I will continue to love this place and when I have kids, bring them here. Try their Won Ton soup too. I heart Golden Dragon.

I turned to Yelp when I found out I was going to be in the area on business. I love honey walnut shrimp and it sounded like the Golden Dragon was the place to get it. The restaurant is very clean and "traditional" Chinese restaurant decor. The older lady (owner) really made me laugh, linking arms with me an showing me to a table. The portions are huge. I had fried wontons (good) and the shrimp (delicious). Prices were very reasonable for Costa Mesa and the portions you got. Hope I get back to the area soon-this will definitely be a stop! Thanks yelpers for the recommendation!

i love this place. very decent chinese food for orange county. my parents would approve. the prices are reasonable and fair. my boyfriend and i discovered this place after i yelped around a bit for a nice hole-in-the-wall place we could eat chinese food. since then we have taken others who have also enjoyed the ambiance. it definitely takes me back to the 80's with the decor, but that's what i love about this place. i love the cheesiness of this place down to the blue neon sign outside to the very friendly "grandma" that greets you when you come in. i have not had a bad experience yet! love it!

This is really the best Chinese Food I have had in Orange County. Some people believe that it is not authentic enough, but really what more could you ask for, ducks hanging in the window? This food is fantastic! The meal started off with wonton skin chips with hot mustard, sweet and sour sauce and a bbq sauce. We also had tea which was so good and brewed very well. I ordered eggrolls and the crab puffs for appitizers and they were both so good and fullfilling. I had a very tasty egg flower soup that came with my meal, much different than the soup that I always throw out from other restaurants. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken which was done really well. The chicken had a wonderful breading and the chicken was tender and not chewy. The rice was very good, it had a yellow color to it , but it was still done well. I've been so disapointed with most chinese restaurants around until now. I will be back!

My boyfriend and I came here hoping that since this place was more family style Chinese food, that it'd be good to try. He got the orange chicken combo, which came with rice, a wonton and an eggroll. Tasted pretty alright. I got the same type of dinner combo, but with kung pao chicken. Man, it was terrible... I ate through a few bites and just realized it just had NO flavor. My boyfriend even tried it and said it was bland. I drenched it in soy sauce to help give it some flavor, but it didn't work. I'd maybe try this place again... maybe.

The food is pretty good, but double-check any takeout orders because they will screw it up. I ordered an appetizer platter and instead got a styrofoam container with nine, gross, limp dumplings. Then, when I called to tell them, the guy told me that someone had fat fingered the computer and I was only charged for the dumplings, but a quick tally of the menu items told me that they either charged me for the platter or randomly charged me about five bucks extra,. For dishonesty, I give them one star. Liars suck.

Kung Pao Shrimp. Tastes nothing like you'd expect it to but it's awesomely awesome. Give it a whirl. I threw up when I got home after eating here ... not sure if it was because I consumed too much alcohol earlier in the day or if it was because this food was so heavy and just upset my stomach. Maybe a combo? Either way the food here is really friggin' tasty and I highly recommend it. We came in when they first opened at 4:30 and by the time we left the place was completely packed. Make a reservation.

I accidentally left our restaurant.com certificate at home, but we figured we could just use it the next time. Unfortunately, I really don't think there will be a next time. Golden Dragon is the most Americanized Chinese restaurant I've been to in a long time. I'm not opposed to Americanized Chinese, and I actually like some restaurants that are far from authentic. But the food at Golden Dragon didn't taste good by any standards. We started with the sizzling rice soup. This was the best part of the dinner. The soup was mostly broth and the rice, but it's tasted alright. Then we shared the Mandarin Fish (Sauteed white fish, green peas, garlic chili sweet BBQ sauce). The emphasis is definitely on sweet. It was almost syrupy it was so sweet. And the peas were your standard frozen peas, not pea pods. We also had the Vegetable Chow Mein. It was mostly noodles in brown sauce, with a few vegetables here and there. It wasn't very exciting to say the least. I left unsatisfied and even let BF have all the leftovers. If anyone wants a $25 gift certificate from restaurant.com , drop me a line.

Be a hero - Take her out for under $40. My girl kept making googly eyes at me all the way through my wonton soup! Very friendly staff, hands-on owner, clean with a thoughtful menu. If you have a child they are very sweet. If you have a party of 30 they are very accomodating. Get ready for the owner to come by your table and make sure everything is perfect. You know those great lunch specials at Chinese places? They do them here for dinner as well. Not too shabby! (She was also playing footsy with me under the table)

  • Hello K.

My family is in the restaurant business, so I hate to insult a family owned restaurant, but the food was awful and this place is a hot mess. The rice in the Sizzling Rice Soup wasn't crispy, it was rock hard. The Orange Chicken contained both white and dark meat, however the "white" meat was actually yellowish brown and it did not taste fresh at all. I was starving and I went here for dinner, yet I probably only ate 6 bites of food. Also, the dining room is sooo dusty and could really stand a good cleaning. The picture frame by our table had a thick visible coat of dust, which also kind of killed my appetite because I kept thinking "if the dining room is this filthy, I'd hate to see the kitchen". Lol, I totally agree with Mike I...."Anyone who gave this place more than 2 stars is lost or on the take" (or has dubious taste, to say the least). I'm sorry but this is the ump-teenth time that Yelp has done me terribly wrong. Next time I'm going to be much more careful about whose reviews I listen to.

I decided to get take-out from here because a friend recommended the place, saying he had been to all the Chinese places in town and that this was the best. YUM YUM YUM I must say!! I ordered: Orange Peel Chicken Mongolian Beef Pork Fried Rice. Orange Peel Chicken: GREAT flavor! Tangy & sweet, but not too sweet. I would have preferred the breading to be crispy though, rather than soggy (3 out of 5) Mongolian Beef: Too Die for! Very tender & flavorful. There was an abundance of green onions in the beef which normally I'm not a huge fan of, but they were well integrated into the dish. Even so, I could have used a slightly higher ratio of beef (4 out of 5) Pork fried Rice: Some of the best I've had! I especially loved the large tender strips of pork in the rice!! I do have to disclose though that there were a few egg shell pieces that made it's way into the rice :-D 4.5 out of 5) Also they offer speedy service. After I placed the order they said it would only take 10 minutes!! When I went to pick up the order it was waiting for me and the staff was very friendly. YUM! My bf and I ate this Chinese food for both Lunch & Dinner on a Sunday! So definitely big portions!

I love the Golden Dragon. I didn't think there was any good chinese food near the water in OC, but I was proven wrong. I took one bite of their walnut shrimp and it was like a divine intervention from above. The sweet and sour chicken and hot and sour soup were icing on the cake. I highly recommend this place. The food is 5 star quality, but I downgraded it a star due to the slower service.

small update. Went there sunday afternoon and service was excellent as always. We ordered the seafood connection ( basically shrimp, large scallops, onions and snow peas), crispy noodle chow mein, walnut shrimp. and chicken fried rice... everything tasted so good that day. It was like I havent eaten chinese food in years and eating there was prize that we just won. Hahaha While we were eating my wife commented on why we dont eat here more often. I didnt know why. I guess we will start now. For 2 adults and 4 kids the bill came out to $60. Not bad.

I had dinner with my sis at this place because it was one of the restaurants my parents liked to eat in when we used to live in Costa Mesa. Their customer service is great and as always we get greeted by a nice lady who reminds me of the kind of grandmother who makes sure you're comfortable and that everything is taken care of. What cracks me up is she always manages to say "Come back again" "See you tomorrow" "Come visit your sister and take her here". That homey fuzzy feeling aside, the food is pretty good. They're always quick to take your order and quick to make it. I enjoyed the food overall and appreciated that they let us stay a little bit over closing. They also have a banquet room available so if you needed a huge space to celebrate whatever it is you want, then this is the place to be. My sister and I ordered the crispy duck, vegetable fried rice, and appetizer sampler. We liked the first two but the third order, not so much. In any which way, their vegetable fried rice was light and not too greasy. Their duck was nice and crispy.

Not going to tear this place up, but I went with the family for an easy dinner and tried 5 dishes; I couldn't recommend any of them. As much as I wanted to like the place, and as much as I support choosing the family business over the Pei Weis of the world, this was just a bad experience. Disappointing.

Those that know me best know that I measure all Chinese restaurants on the quality of their pepper steak. Sure, it might not be the most common choice in the Chinese world, but I am an Italian and it's what I like. I am in town all the time for work and thankfully this little ditty is very close to my usual hotel. The staff are nicer than most Chinese restaurants I've ever been to and the food is consistently enjoyable. The portions are also huge, so come hungry. My only wish is that the sauce were a bit thicker, but it's not a deal breaker in my book.

'See you tomorrow', See you never again! I just cleaned the chemical yellow stain off my coffee table that came from the sweet and sour shrimp. I wanted to crank this review out before the rhea/food poisoning kicks in. I have had lots of mediocore chinese food, it fills you up gets the job done and is reliable. This place is bad. Worse than panda express. How do you make such bad food? Here is what we ordered (and what we got): mongolian beef(mainly green onions with a watery sauce), crab puffs (fishy), sweet and sour shrimp (soggy and overcooked veggies and shrimp, bland), chicken fried rice (bland), moo shu vegatables (pre wrapped soggy and bland). Oh and it was a bargain basement $50+ for it all. I feel gross. I hate myself for eating the food. Even after bite #2 I knew it was pure crap, but I kept going because I was hungry. Don't make the same mistake I did. My belly is rumbling as I type. Anyone who gave this place more than 2 stars is lost or on the take. I love chinese food this was a serious speed bump in my love affair. Its like loving brunettes and dating one who keys your car, you're gonna be nervous next time you meet one at a bar. Dear other chinese food restaurants: I'll try not to let golden dragon ruin me. Bad bad bad. I love food and generally lean towards giving great reviews, not possible with golden dragon.

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants! I've been going here for years whenever I'm craving some hearty chinese food. The portions are HUGE, and I love the complimentary green tea they serve. Not to mention when you go for lunch (before 4:00), the prices are so reasonable! MY recomendations: -Sizzling Rice Soup: amazing! they bring the soup to your table and pour the rice in and it cooks in the hot broth. Filled with yummy chicken, shrimp, and veggies. -Sweet and Sour Chicken: one of my favorites, the chicken is covered with they're special sauce with onions and pineapple. -Chicken lo mein -Broccoli Beef Definitely stop by for a delicious meal at Golden Dragon!

HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP. So good you'll shit your pants. This place is straight out of a Bruce Lee movie...the decor is circa 1976 but the service is awesome. I love old skool chinese restaurants and this has become one of my favorites! A few dishes I'd like to recommend.... 1-Chow mein with beef-I think I let my "Oh" face slip when I took a bite 2-Honey walnut shrimp-like I said you'll shit your pants it's so good 3-Sampler appetizer plate that has a little bit of everything on it-the ribs are cracktastic! I don't know what kind of sauce the ribs were smothered in but I wanted to smear my face in it...ok that was a bit graphic but you get the idea. 4-Cream of sum fun yung guy-oh wait I didn't order this one here... Anyhoo...seriously, you can't go wrong with anything you order. ENJOY!

I will definitely go back again. Food was great and so was the service. Everything about Golden Dragon was authentic. We lived on Kauai for 2 years and there are some great Asian options there, but Golden Dragon made it right to the top of our list.

Thanks OC yelpers - I settled on Golden Dragon for dinner tonight based on your reviews and am pleased to now be able add my favorable review to the mix. It's tucked away in a retail complex that had plenty of parking at 7:30 on a Thursday, and the restaurant itself had a handful of tables seated through the pleasantly, if stereotypically, decorated dining room. As I settled into my booth, I watched a cheerful older lady circulate around the tables, joking with the patrons, bidding them happy new year, and asking others how they were enjoying their meal. A few minutes later, the host visited the largest table of (apparent) regulars and joked with them for a bit as well. It really created a cozy and comfortable environment. My waiter was a little aloof but friendly, and the busser was quick and efficient with a keen eye for seeing when I had finished a course and discretely boxed it up to go. The hot and sour soup was an absolute delight. I ordered the small portion as a starter, and it was enough soup for three or even four people to share for an appetizer, or it could easily be a meal on it's own. It was fully of plump shrimp, firm pieces of tofu, and a variety of fresh veggies in a spicy, fragrant stock that the waiter informed me was made to order to avoid cooking off too much of the vinegar that provides the sour. I had to force myself to stop after two cups of the soup so I didn't completely ruin my appetite for my main course. I had the kung pao chicken with a side of steamed white rice. Like the soup, the ingredients were all fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce tasted as if it was made from scratch, and my only complaint is that I found it a little on the bland side. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my experience at Golden Dragon. The service was good, the atmosphere welcoming, the food fresh and plentiful, and the soup in particular made a very favorable impression on me. I suspect that this would become a regular destination for me if I lived in the area.

I actually started a Yelp account JUST so I could give this place 5 stars! Right when we entered, the staff was so friendly, especially the old lady owner. At the end of the meal, she even gave me and my friends a friendly hug. She totally reminded me of my jolly grandma back in Asia. BBQ Ribs: I was expecting the dry version, but this one was bathed in a sweet sauce. A little overcooked, but delicious nonetheless. Kung Pao Chicken: Yum yum! Lots of chicken in a savory, spicy sauce. Sweet and Sour Pork: One of the best sweet and sour porks I've ever had! The sauce was perfectly tasty. Service was fast. Food was delicious. Atmosphere was friendly. It's my new favorite Chinese restaurant, for sure! I'm about ready to hit up my leftovers just from writing this...

I never really think to review any of my regular places, but after seeing some of the reviews on Yelp for the Golden Dragon, I thought I had to. Golden Dragon is an amazing Chinese food restaurant! The staff treat you like family and we have been going here for years for great Chinese food. I recommend the special egg rolls, orange chicken and the walnut shrimp. They are all delicious and family favorites. The bottom line, we have never had anything here we haven't enjoyed and they take great care of their customers.

Our first thought was to eat at PF Changs and soon regretted not doing so. The location is a the back of a parking lot in a strip mall, and oddly convenient to several seedy looking massage parlors. As soon as we crossed the threshold, we were accosted by grandma golden dragon, who grabbed my stunned friend's hand, and whisked us through the plastic buddha shrine to a vinyl booth. We were given tattered menus with more than typical typos, like 'steam rice' and 'friend breast chicken'. We ordered chIcken lettuce wraps, chicken chu mien and aromatic shrimp. The sauces were thick and goopy. I closed my eyes and took a bite of each chicken dish. They were indistinguishable. The shrimp dish was ok, but i must admit the ice water and tea were wonderful. It took me 20 minutes to write this review because of my multiple urgent bathroom breaks to spray the grease and bean sprouts in the bowl. And guess what....I'm hungry again!

Old school Costa Mesa staple. Don't get all pissed off that they don't serve sea cucumber hot pot. This is pretty tame, run of the mill Chinese. The owners take a lot of pride in the restaurant, and have kept many of the cooks and busboys for more than 20 years. I respect that they run their business well. And I love the shrimp with lobster sauce. I also love that there's a Baskin Robbins around the corner. Hmmm. Sounds like that time of the month. See you tomorrow!

  • Stef H.

Once again.. (most) yelpers are right-on. Real Chinese restaurants: -noisy -crowded (with- you guessed it, loud asians) -have shitty beyond shitty service -couldn't care less about interior decorating -have weird nonsensical names -will bring you a fork if you beg them on your knees -orgasm in your mouth (and then back pain/ the occasional bout of diarrhea later) This place: -feng-shui-ed -peaceful -nice old lady who called me "my dear!" -more white people than the country music awards -is called "Golden Dragon" (I mean...come on) So if you are afeared of authentic Chinese restaurants, come here and bask in the faux-bamboo and dim mood lighting and praise yourself for being so cultured you wouldn't deign to step into a Panda Express. Ah, who am I kidding, I'll probably be back tomorrow. These noodles are pretty damn good and Panda Express is just s'damn far....

Went here after Frank M's review. The portions give you enough for 2 meals but I'll bet you wont leave with leftovers. They even give you crispy won ton freebies for the table to munch on while you wait for your food. the food was great and the service on point! While at lunch the owner came by to ask us how everything was and i noticed everyone who came in seemed to know the owner or a waiter. you don't see that in most places so from my 1 time being here I know its special, a local favorite. Ill be back to add my 2 cents and keep this place going.

I'll see you tomorrow. I am far from an expert on good Chinese Food and have to believe that there are places in Westminster and Garden Grove that are better, but for this immediate area, I would highly recommend the Golden Dragon. The interior is pretty ugly, but pretty traditional Chinese looking as well. This is a family run business and you can tell they take a lot of pride in what they do. Everything I've gotten here is pretty delicious, but I usually get a green chicken curry and some fried rice. Maybe I'll get some noodles or a shrimp dish if I'm feeling up to it. I believe the pricing is very fair for the quality and amount of food. Although the place can be a little bit dirty looking at times; being dirty and being a Chinese restaurant are not mutually exclusive.

I personally like this one better than Panda Express because after eating it I didn't feel lathargic and heavy! I had the chicken with vegatables! I love chow mein noodles there!

  • Candance L.

I've eaten there several times. Their potstickers are amazing. What really got me is that I was charged for Steamed White Rice (2) @ 3.00. My dish was a scallop dish that cost $16.95. Mind you our total bill for 2 people was over $60.00. When I asked about the white rice charge the waiter told me that they charge for the rice when you dine in...but if you take out the rice is free of charge. I confirmed this with the owner. I couldn't believe it. You mean to say, that if I stay and order more food than taking out, I get dinged? I won't dine here again simply on pricinple.

I just completed a large corporate lunch event catered by John and the Golden Dragon today. The food was incredibly delicious and perfect for over 100 people. John is excellent to work with for a large catering order and was courteous and professional in his multiple follow ups before our event - you can TRUST him. The food was delivered flawlessly and everyone was extremely pleased with the quality of the food. The Honey Walnut Shrimp was out of control good! Thank you Golden Dragon for an amazing spread. We couldn't have done it without you. I will definitely recommend to friends and business contacts.

this is my favorite spot for a relaxing week day lunch. so so cheap. I enjoy their complimentary tea. the lunch specials include soup or salad and the appetizers. the atmosphere is absolutely Asian and peaceful. The owner is so loving. (i don't care much about the waiter that brings my food along with the bill, that is so un call for) This is definitely as good as it gets!

We had a gathering tonight with a few friends and offered to bring dinner. Chinese is always a hit, so we decided on this place because the reviews were good. Everyone in our party was pleased with our choices and praised how good the food was. We chose the crispy rice vegetable soup, egg foo young, moo Shu vegetable, shrimp chu mein, and vegetable fried rice. We will be back here again the next time we are in the mood for Chinese.

Well, I'm sorry to write that I'm extremely disappointed. We were hoping this was going to be our choice and our "find" for the best chinese food in Orange County. Although the crab rangoon appetizer was very fresh and crispy, the garlic chicken was horrible. The garlic chicken had zero flavor and it was as if someone dumped 2 cans of water chestnuts into the bland chicken mix. The entree was mostly water chestnuts with mild flavored diced chicken. With real garlic chicken, the chicken is sliced, not diced, and there is almost a sweet spiciness because there is so much garlic and flavor. The best garlic chicken also has celery, onions, green peppers and mushrooms. It's also overpriced overall. If it was a true gourmet chinese restaurant they could ask the prices they are asking. It just isn't worth going back unless they up their game and update their recipes. Fresh and flavorful are always best.

Im super skeptical regarding Chinese food. Ive had tons of bad experiences with food poisoning, so I waited till the day after to write this review. When you walk in, this little Asian lady came up and gave me a hug. I didnt know how to respond but it was nice to feel welcome. She sat us, talked with us and made us feel like her family. We ordered the orange peel chicken, walnut shrimp and chicken chow mein. All were fantastic. I especially liked the orange peel chicken - all white meat, sauce on point! Service was on point too. Our server was soooooo attentive. Food came out in a reasonable time... As I left, the little lady that greeted us ran up and gave us another hug. She was absolutely the sweetest woman I think I've ever met. I will be back!

Okay, an old adage of mine; if the waiters are a little arrogant or rude at first it may be because they have great food. We had a party of 16 and whoosh they served us in one instantaneous move. The Cantonese food was incredible! The Kitchen is incredible. The food and service was excellent. Everybody was pleased. Note: to the reviewers who gave this place a single star, you are showing your ignorance to the different regional styles of Chinese cooking. This is a Cantonese style restaurant which serves mild but tasty food. Mandarin style is mild spicy. I think you want Szechuan style which uses the black pepper corn and red peppers. They make hot and sour soup. This reminds me of the television reporter and health department official which shut down a Korean restaurant for serving rotting cabbage which they kept in large trash cans in back. LOL, it was Kim Chi you idiots!

A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark. Chinese Proverb In the beginning there were no dim sum Chinese restaurants in San Diego. The family would go on road trips to Chinatown in L.A. to get dim sum. We ate in beautiful restaurants with huge fish tanks and lovely Chinese art all along the walls. How I looked forward to those glorious trips... One of our favorite places to go was the Golden Dragon. When I noticed on Yelp this place was also called Golden Dragon I knew I had to investigate. The owners were very gracious greeting all their guests at the entrance. Lovely decor like those fancy Chinatown restaurants I visited as a child. The menu is huge and I went with 3 of my favorite dishes. The foil wrapped chicken had a very tasty combination of spices. Won ton soup had great tasting pork won tons and broth. Loved the thin won ton wrappers. The pork and shrimp chu mien was made with very tasty ingredients. Loved how 3 different types of mushrooms were present. Not a fan of the button mushrooms but I loved the other 2. Great tasting pork, shrimp and egg noodles. The owner lady talked to me after my meal and let me know they had been in business for over 30 years. Very nice lady. Everything I tried was very good. This Golden Dragon is worthy of the Golden Dragon from my past. I'll be back next time I'm in Newport Beach and in the mood for Chinese food.

Came here for the first time last Saturday. I ordered honey-walnut shrimp and a few other dishes. The portions are huge and delicious... the only problem is, several of the shrimp in the HWS still had the black strips of "intestinal waste" in them - they had not been cleaned AT ALL, and I was very upset. The ones that were normal were terrific. Would try it again...

Just got back from dinner, my gilfriend wanted to try Chinese food in Costa Mesa so we Yleped for help and found The Golden Dragon. We started with WonTon soup-- terrible. We had the house fried rice witch tasted funny- and the shrimp in it was old and soggy, the main host seating us was not friendly and never looked at us, the waiter was cold and never smiled. My GF is local Chineese and thought the food and service was terrible. I will never go their again or recommend it to anyone of my friends or family.

Been coming here for years, great authentic Chinese food. I love being greeted and seared by "Chinese Gramma" she is so sweet and makes you feel at home. I like everything but continue to go back for the sizzling rice soup and the egg foo yung.

Tried Golden Dragon out for lunch, the food was excellent. Sweet and Sour Pork with Egg Roll, Soup, and Fried Won Tons for $10. The food was prepared quickly and had everything tasted great. The service was fast and friendly, my waiter had a pretty good sense of humor. The only down side to this place is the decor, it is most certainly run down, but over looked quickly if you are looking for some good traditional Chinese food which is rare for some reason in Orange County.

Worst Chinese Meal Ever! Ordered hot & sour soup. No vinegar taste, no hot taste, no taste at all. The shrimp in the shrimp with bean sauce was mushy and bean sauce was bland and tasteless. Finally the shrimp lo mein was dry and tasteless. Threw all in trash. A total waste of $35. Don't do it!

My favorite Chinese food place! My family and I have been going here for over 10 years, and it's always better than the last visit. The walnut shrimp is to die for, as well as the wanton soup. The family atmosphere is quite enjoyable and they're great at helping large parties.

It's real hard to find good Chinese food anywhere. This food is fresh tasting and not greasy. They have several good vegetarian items to chose from. The miso soup is the best that I've had and the mu shu veggie is my favorite with a side of veggie fried rice. The people working there could not be nicer, even got a hug from one of the ladies on the way out. Just made myself hungry....goin there right now!

Shared the Egg Rolls, the Hong Kong Seafood noodle, Beef & Broccoli, Pork Fried Rice and some Chicken Curry and fed 5 w left overs! We started coming here in the 1970's, when it was located down a few blocks. That makes us....and them....pretty dang old. My first memories are of the waitresses insisting on carrying my affable infant son on their hips around as they tried to do their work, and of him sitting in a high chair, his entire head and body covered with chow mein noodles. He is now 37 and would be horrified I am writing this. So, we had not been here in a decade. Moved on, moved away. But we hoped to enjoy a significant meal here while on our most recent stay-cation in Orange County last week. First of all, when we arrived it was nearly time for the kitchen to shut down after lunch. They took us anyway. Kudos. We ordered quickly, and small surprise, the food came out lightening-ly fast. The servers doted on us. Truthfully, that may have something to do with us being the only customers left in the dining room, but what's not to like about that? The dishes we ordered were generous portions. Two soups (a hot and sour, and a wonton), pork with tofu, kung pao chicken, ginger beef, and shrimp with asparagus. Nothing fried, nothing with noodles, as some of our party was avoiding those foods and we respected that. The dishes were all decent, but not up to par with many of the Chinese restaurants we get to frequent these days. Especially when they are in an area so close to the real Asian neighborhoods just 10 miles away. I think my taste buds have grown up and are more snobbish than 40 years ago. So what is my bottom line? Better than fast food, but bland for my acquired tastes, I think I would like to remember the good times, appreciate their staying power, be grateful for their tremendous service, and happy with their prices, but probably not crave their food anymore.

Best Chinese I've had in 14 years in the OC. I have been coming here for 12 years and they have never disappointed! Every time I decide to try somewhere new, I regret it. "Mama" greets you with a hug and a smile and treats you like family. The decor is OK. I have never eaten in but they are always pretty full when I go to pick up my order. They have my order ready when they say they will and they are generous with the portions. A couple of my favorite dishes are: Fired Shrimp Appetizer (A little spend but you get a lot) Garlic Chicken. Saucy and oh so delicious! Honey Walnut Shrimp... (They separate the walnuts so if someone in your party doesn't like them, its easy to remove) I'll be honest, I tried the Sweet and sour pork 3 times and all 3 times it was too tough to eat. I wouldn't suggest that, but I have gone through a majority of their menu and this was the only negative I found. You will not regret trying them out!

This place has the best Chinese Food south of San Francisco, and west of China. The menu is full of great scrumptious dishes, and the pricing and service is second to none. You will be presently surprised by just how good the food is here, and you will be back again. I have been coming here once a month for 30 years, and they deliver every time. FIVE STARS.

This place is absolutely amazing. Probably the warmest, friendliest wait staff I have encountered in a LONG time. Unfortunately, I live 30-45 mins away from here but whenever I am in town, I will visit Golden Dragon. Nothing bad about this place at all. Food is cheap & delicious. & the staff makes you feel at home!

Have only had takeout here but the owners were really what sold me. I needed some fried rice for a recipe at home and when I walked in the door I was greeted with hugs and some playful joking by each owner. I thought, "I don't even know if the food is good but I'm definitely coming back to keep experiencing these wonderful individuals!" The combo fried rice was exceptional and not heavy like other restaurants I have experienced. Tried out the egg rolls at a later time and they are hand-made and delicious. The orange peel beef was fresh and a nice alternative to the previously frozen meat you usually get. I wasn't crazy about the cashew chicken, but look forward to trying more and more items from the menu.

My family and I have been here quite a few times. The honey walnut shrimp, orange peel chicken, and Mongolian beef are two of my favorites. There is always hot tea and the Mai Tai's are good and give a nice buzz. The owners are very polite and greet you like family and provide speedy service--that's a plus! Overall, I really enjoy this place and plan on coming more often in the future.

When you arrive to golden dragon the first impression is a run down hole in the wall place , as the small strip mall is deserted with only a mail shop open, and the sign for the golden dragon needs work. When you step in, Sylvia the owner always greets her customers with a hug and a smile. The ambiance is great, they have a fully stocked bar and very intricate pieces of Chinese art. The food is savory and flavorful regardless of what you get. The plates are large, even the lunch specials are a very good size. Unfortunately, they get -1 star as there is an older gentleman that works there that demands tips. Not any tip. If you have a party of 5 or more he expects to be tipped 2-3 dollars per person. And he will harass you and not run your bill and make a scene if you try to tell him otherwise.

Dude. Three words: Honey Walnut Shrimp. It's the best thing that exists in all the lands. Plus, it's like you get a full meal with honey-glazed shrimp (protein), deep-fried breading (carbs), broccoli (vegetable), honey-glazed walnuts (fats), and rice (more carbs) ... sounds like a balanced meal to me hitting all of the food groups that I care about. Plus, the owner lady is this amazing little Chinese lady who treats you like you are her long-time family friend. If you dine-in, don't be surprised if she sits down at the table with you and shares some funny Chinese proverbs with you. Basically, I want her to be one of my grandmas. Everything here is great. I love you Golden Dragon!!

Can't believe I've only just started eating here. It looks okay inside, but I've only done pickup. The Sizzling Rice, Egg drop and Sweet Sour soups are great -- sizzling rice is the best -- and the walnut shrimp is one of the better chinese shrimp dishes I've ever had.

Finally found a traditional family-owned Chinese restaurant. All the food is great so far--their Hong Kong Style Noodles are a must have every time I go. Prices are a little on the higher side compared to express Chinese fast food, but the quality food and the good service are definitely worth it. Fresh, not too salty, and made to order.

I absolutely love this place the food is delicious!!!!!!! Absolutely my favorite Chinese food restaurant. The walnut shrimp is my favorite! The shrimp is light and crispy served with broccoli and caramelized walnuts. House specialty is the Orange peel chicken, cooked with real orange peels! Amazing! Their soups are also great, I always start with one. The service? They are quick and efficient! There is a sweeeeeeeet older lady that is always there and soooo warming! love her!!!

Tonight I brought my kids here for dinner. I ordered take out a few months ago and the food was delicious. So, we decided to dine in the restaurant. We were immediately placed in a booth, a few other patrons around and finishing their meals. We were greeted and asked if we were ready to order. Our server brought our soup first then asked if I wanted to have the food started. That was nice to give us time to enjoy the appetizer. Our food was brought out fairly quickly, everything was hot and yummy. We ordered the aromatic shrimp, I thought the price was steep at $15.50 until the dish came filled with shrimp surrounded by a bunch of steamed broccoli! It was delicious. The orange chicken is light, sweet and delicious too! The busser was very attentive, clearing away dishes, filling water and boxing up food quickly and nicely. The server was very friendly and talked to my kids and I before we left. Go and enjoy!

This was good Chinese Food, they've got old school egg rolls except they're half the size & double the price but they're tasty and not the disappointing "spring rolls" most have been pedlin as egg rolls for years now. I've gotten the Dinner for one special a couple times now, the Fried Wontons they throw in with it are actually tasty too. Not the cheapest, they don't deliver, but good & recommended.

I was looking for some authentic chinese cuisine and read the reviews for Golden Dragon, so I thought I'd give it a try. What a disappointment! I ordered take-out. The only positive thing that I can say is that it was hot when I got home. Fried Dumplings - Were SUPER greasy and completely flat and limp. There was no dumpling sauce in the togo container. (Not that it mattered since I took one bite and threw the rest away.) Walnut Shrimp - Tasted fine, but the shrimp tails were so tough that I thought the shell was still on them. It made it very unpleasant to eat them. Again...those went down the disposal also. Kung Pao Chicken - I do not understand why any Chinese restaurant serves a chicken entree without using white meat. The meat was dark and fatty and frankly, gross. I tried several bites, but ended up spitting more out into my napkin than swallowing. Again...down the disposal. White Rice - It was sticky and tasteless. I love Chinese food, so I really tried to ignore how yucky the entire meal was. No luck. I have NEVER thrown away chinese food! The leftovers are almost the best part, but alas, after $37, I'm left hungry and without tomorrow's lunch. I won't go there again.

This place is awesome! It's my favorite restaurant currently. The food is delicious, the restaurant is clean and decorated, and the service is just great! They are quick with the orders and are very friendly. It's everything you look for in a restaurant in my opinion!

Delicious! I came here with my husband in hopes of finally finding a decent sit down chinese restaurant, and this place did not disappoint. We ordered the honey walnut shrimp (amazing) and mongolian beef (great flavor but wish there was more beef and less onion). very friendly and quick service. we will definitely be returning!

This is a wonderful Chinese restaurant (I highly recommend the Mu-Shu chicken...they wrap them for you at the table!). A highlight is being greeted by "Grandma" or watching her enthusiastically care for her customers. She will take patrons by the hand to seat them at a table. When you leave she calls out "See you tomorrow!" :] How can you resist?! The food is great, the staff is nice, Grandma is awesome.

Golden Dragon, off the main street with good parking. Friendly staff, pleasant interior, service and attention good. Overall the food is good and the cost fair. We particularly enjoyed the sizzling rice and sautéed shrimp (without hot spice). the plates were plentiful, really more the enough!

Great for lunch. I love the lunch menu. You get soup, an appetizer and entree for around $10 or less. My favorite place to have lunch during the work week. Delicious!

This is a great little asian food place in costa mesa; i work in the at the car wash across the street and i occasionally drop by for food because of its connivence.

Beautiful atmosphere, lively attentive staff and delicious food. The chicken lettuce wraps are delicious, wonton soup very good. Mushroom beef, sweet and sour pork, lo-mein, green tea ice cream--all very delicious. A delightful experience.

Golden Dragon is fantastic for two reasons: 1) Wonderful, friendly staff 2) Delicious food Jesse D. and I satisfy our chinese cravings here and we've always been satisfied. The people who own the place make you feel like family. When we enter, we are often welcomed in by a sweet older lady who once grabbed Jesse's hand and said "Are you hungry? Let's EAT!" as she led us to the table. It was awesome and adorable. My favorite thing here is the SHRIMP FRIED RICE ($7.75)! I've not found anything that compares... it is packed full of shrimp with shrimp flavor throughout. I crave it often... dream about it even. I've had the Walnut Shrimp ($14.95) which is decent, but definitely a SWEET dish. I didn't like it at first, but I ate all of it (including the leftovers I took home) and I still find myself thinking about it from time to time... wanting more. I don't know what this food is laced with, but I think I'm addicted. I don't remember what else I've had, but everything has been great. Also, Jesse and I ALWAYS order the house special egg rolls (egg skin, mushroom, shrimp, pork, vegetables, 4/ $9.25). They are delicious, especially with that spicy mustard! I also LOVE the tea! I don't think there is anything wrong with this place... When we go, we know we will have a great meal and take plenty of leftovers home. Great price, great service and great food! I LOVE IT!

Very nice and attentive staff, food taste good and fresh. I ordered mandarine peel chicken dinner combo. It came with an egg roll, wonton soup, egg fried rice and 2 beef wontons. Chicken was really good, crunchy on top with tender meat inside, in very yummy not too spicy sauce. Huge portion for $10.50. But my stomach didn't like it! I can't pinpoint what it was, everything seemed freshly made, possible use of msg? Not sure, but this is why I give this place lower rating than I thought I would when I left this restaurant.

Service is as good as it gets. Never had to ask for a refill on drinks, plates were cleared as soon as appetizers were finished, and everyone was very friendly. The orange chicken was delicious and crispy. The crab won tons were loaded with crab meat unlike most that have mainly cream cheese. Great place and large portions. The owner was very sweet as well and makes you feel at home.

I AM NEVER COMING HERE AGAIN!!! Good Yelp reviews led me here & what a rip off....$10 for bland panda express quality cashew chicken & another $1.50 for crappy steamed rice?!?! I would have been ok with the quality being so "a la cart " if it was like $5 but when you see high prices at a sit down Chinese food restaurant, you expect some decent food & how the hell do you screw up steamed rice?!? Even the pepper they leave on the table is really low quality so if your ready to blow $14 for mall food then come to golden dragon.

Not sure why people like this place. As far as Chinese food goes, it is mediocre at best. Everything tasted fairly bland and was generic looking. I'm used to better dining since I've lived in Chicago for 9 years, but even for Orange County standards, I feel this place is subpar.

Amazing! I have been coming here since the 80's and it is still great! Mama is there to greet you and she looks great! Sizzling Rice Soup, Honey Walnut Shrimp and the Chow Mein are all on point! All are must order and then add whatever else you want. Lemon chicken is also fantastic. Hot tea is an added special treat! I know there are a lot of great places to eat in the area but do not miss this experience.

One of the best Chinese restaurants I have dined at. The food was excellent and the service superb. We were seated right away and served directly. The ambience was beautiful. I am definitely revisiting and bringing more guests next time. There was three of us dining and we each ordered something different. From shrimp to beef and chicken as well as chicken fried rice, each dish was excellent! We were served efficiently and with great attitudes! Way to go Golden Dragon! Thanks for a pleasant dining experience.

Everytime I eat here is ask myself: "why do I not eat here more often?" Real good quality, good service, and very cheap. What more could you ask for?? Eating the chicken fried rice as I write this and I couldn't be happier!!

They have some very tasty dishes, the mongolian beef, Kung Pao Chicken & Honey Walnut Prawns are great, my personal favorite. I am not sure about the quality of the beef though and I am not a big fan of dining in personally, togo price for beef & chicken is $24 bucks, a tad pricey, and no brown rice option sorta blows, thats why I give it 3 stars. I think it works well as a to go place for us. It does fill a craving for chinese in a pinch.

Love the food, love the back story, love the staff. This is my go to place whenever I crave Chinese food (which is pretty frequently). Their portions are huge and well worth the affordable price. The chow mein is delicious and I always end up getting the lemon chicken which is very flavorful. I order the food to go a lot, but have eaten there a few times and had a very pleasurable experience.

MMMMMM i love this place. i get takeout usually but its a beautiful restaurant inside. Ive easily spent over 60$ here ordering for only 3 of us lol, but it was the best food ever. Im going tonight for some hot and sour soup cuz i have a sore throat:]

Love, Love, Love the won ton soup....amazing and the special egg rolls, also amazing. They have some really special items here that are unique and satisfying and great family service too. The one thing that keeps me from giving this place 5 stars is they charge for rice. The dishes are priced ok IF they include the whole dish, which should include rice. In fact, this the ONLY restaurant that has ever charged for rice and for 4 servings...about $10....ridiculous actually. It has caused us to only order the soup and egg rolls or other apps....no dinners. I would highly recommend Golden Dragon BUT they should know about the rice issue.

Ok so I was fired up to find a good Chinese food place And it was good. Then I went into the restroom. Are you serious. Roaches. And not just one. Several. I couldn't beleive it. Sorry but if they are in the restroom. I'm sure they are everywhere

Ordered this place through the LABite.com . It's a minimum order of $70 for the delivery and every item (10 different items) were all horrible. We ordered: Honey Walnut Shrimp Wor Wonton Soup Hot & Sour Soup Shrimp & Lobster Egg Flower Soup Kung Pao Chicken Mongolian Beef Crab Cheese Fried Shrimp Curry Chicken Beef Pepper Steak (unsure on name) There was nothing authentic about the food at all. There was absolutely no flavor in any of of the dishes. Everything was super bland. It was a complete bummer that we had to spend so much to have it delivered and not one dish was satisfying. We ended up ordering Indian food instead after this to get some decent food in our bellies. Never again will I order or eat at Golden Dragon.

Oh Mr. Golden Dragon how you've disappointed me. My last couple of visits have been less than ok. Won Ton soup base is oil, literally just oil. Left my intestines nice and slick. Good thing? Nah. Vegetable Chu Mein is SOAKING in-you guessed it-OIL. Horrible and messy chopped up vegtables-two kinds of overcooked mushrooms, raw carrots and bamboo shoots. Throw in some broccoli maybe? Just bad. Crab and Cream Cheese Won Tons were just ok. Worst $30 I've spent in a while. Just not worth it to come back.

Over 30? Looking for that classic chinese restaurant you grew up eating? This is it! For starters, you have to eat here in person at least once. Mama will great you with open arms and treat you like one of the family. I swear I'd come here if the food sucked just for mama (and the rest of her clan - they're all great). But the food doesn't suck! It's actually quite good. So I'm going to post my favorites because that's how I roll - 1. Mandarin hot shrimp. It was this dish that hooked me. A spicy BBQ-like sauce with shrimp and vegetables cooked in it. It's not too spicy, but has a smoky flavor and the sauce I just love it. Generally this dish has been cooked fairly consistently every time I come (at least once every 2-3 weeks). Rarely has it disappointed. 2. Egg rolls. They taste good, they have flavor, and they appear homemade as opposed to the frozen drivel most places serve. 3. Flower beef. This is a huge dish, with a giant rice-cake like tortilla. In fact, think of this as a chinese taco salad (you know, with the ridiculous tortilla shell you'll never eat). But the beef is good and flavorful, nice and mild but tender. Occasionally it can be a bit dry, but most of the time it's been cooked well. This is a great dish to eat at the restaurant vs. take out. Take out, occasionally the meat can be dry by time you get home. 4. Kung pao shrimp. Not your typical kung pao, the shrimp has batter (but it's not deep fried) on it on again, a good flavorful sauce. Not too spicy, but I love the texture of the shrimp. 5. Orange Chicken. See Kung Pao shrimp, the orange chicken is white meat which I like vs. the mystery meat of all the leftover parts of the chicken. And it isn't rubbery chewy like the chicken you get at Panda Express (you shouldn't be eating there). 6. Hong Kong Noodle. Ok - don't order unless you're going to feed 2-3 people with this. It's a large dish with cooked (and what seems like partially fried) along with vegetables like carrots, mushrooms, snow peas and more. A soy like sauce, it almost looks like a catered meal (comes in a large aluminum tin tray). The not so good is their hot mustard is pretty weak, and the fried rice lacks flavor. But given that I pour the extra sauce either from the mandarin hot shrimp or the kung pao, that takes care of the flavor issue for me. It really is a good place, and the food is generally really good. I am slowly branching out and trying their other dishes vs. my favorites, but damn if it isn't hard going with tried and true!

First I need to mention that for many years I've come to this wonderful Chinese American restaurant with my parents and as an adult. For all these years this place served the BEST Chinese-American food. From then till before April16, 2014, I would have rated this fine Chinese restaurant a full FIVE STARS; however, on April 16, 2014, mother and I dropped by for lunch on the way back home from a doctor's visit. The food was NOT the same! Something went wrong with the cooking of the Sweet and Sour Pork dish. It is no longer made the way it was. I brought it to the attention of Ki (Owner and greeter) about the situation. She was very nice and did NOT charge us for the food. My worries go beyond this. I'm thinking that the restaurant is cutting back on quality to save on money. That Sweet & Sour was HARD with hardly any meat inside the fried dough. And it did NOT taste the way we always had it for many years! Mother and I also noticed the noodle chips very greasy. Perhaps there are other dishes that are still good. Unfortunately mother was so disappointed that she told me that she does NOT ever want to return.

This place hit the spot. We only eat Chinese food when we eat out. Needless to say, we have visited a few restaurants. The greeting we received coming in and going out was 5 star. The food was good. Soup was great and my daughter ate the whole egg roll. I've never seen her do that before. I wish there were more businesses like this. We felt really good when we left, not just full.

The owner is a nice lady. She will greet you when walk in and walk you to your table, check on you during, and gave me a hug when leaving! :) It had been a long time, almost 20 years since I had been here last. The decor had not changed. My boyfriend and I started off with the Sizzling Rice Soup. I highly recommend it. It has a little of everything in it. It has shrimp, pork, chicken, water chestnuts, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and of course as they serve it to you, they throw in rice, and it sizzles! We got the 2 serving bowl to share. We said next time we would get the larger bowl, and just make meal out of that! I had Walnut Shrimp and he had Mandarian beef. Both were good. I liked his better, was a little spicy, but sweet too. The worst thing we had was the House Fried Rice. It was dry (I added more soy sauce) and the shrimp was overcooked and chewy, and over taste was bland. Would not order that again. The only other bad thing, was service was slow, other waitress was fast with her tables, but our waiter took a long time to bring out each dish, and he seemed to be not that happy, unlike the waitress in next section. I would come back for the owner, don't get that many places. Also, the soup and Main dishes were still good as I remembered!

The elderly lady who greets you holds your hand as she seats you, which is sweet in a way but which makes me feel really awkward. I guess in theory, it would feel special if she didn't do this to every single person who walked in the door. That said, they're decently priced, and most of their dishes are average to good. They have fantastically tasty gravies. (Fried rice and steamed rice need work).

You are welcomed like you have been going there for years, and the service is excellent. I have never had anything that was not fantastic and the portions are plentiful. One of my favorite places to eat.

This has been my go-to Chinese food for the past 20+ years. My family introduced me to this restaurant and I have good memories of fun family dinners here. I have brought friends and boyfriends here and they have all enjoyed the food and being enveloped in tiny "Mama's" warm embrace. I'm a fan of the following appetizers: crab cheese wontons and the paper wrapped chicken. My favorite entrees are: Wonton soup, Oyster sauce beef, Garlic chicken, Moo shu pork and the Shrimp fried rice.

    (4)
  • Jim G.

The service here was outstanding. The people are friendly and make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in the door. The food is another matter. It was really, really bad. Almost inedible. I feel bad even writing a review for this, but my fiance and I were trying them out as a possible locale for our rehearsal dinner. We ordered several dishes: Mongolian beef, Hong Kong style noodles, a fish dish that was so salty we couldn't take more than a bite of it, and a some chicken dish that was totally forgettable. If I had to summarize the dining experience it would be this: the food was hot and brown. That's it. Perhaps it's because I've become acquainted to the excellent cooking of my future mother in law who is originally from Taiwan, but this place just doesn't pass muster. It's a shame, because I really wanted to like this place. The Panda Express down the road actually has better food than this place does.

What can be said about a place where upon walking into the place, the unbelievably sweet old owner-lady greets you warmly with a giant smile saying, "Let's go eat!" while leading you by the hand to your table? She's a rare and beautiful human being. I wish she owned every restaurant! The great thing about Golden Dragon (other than the aforementioned gem above) is the service and the food. Britt and I have eaten several different things here and we always leave satisfied. The house special egg rolls are great and the shrimp fried rice is subtly flavored and CHOCK FULL of shrimp! We've also tried their kung pao and it definitely doesn't disappoint. This review is seeming a little sparse because I am finding myself spacing on some of the food detail and instead focusing on the wonder that is the owner lady. Someday we will master the science of cloning and will have the technology to replicate the coolest little gal in the business! Every place needs her joy!

Well I tried this place today for lunch. I should have not wasted my time. The hot and sour soup was pathetic. I ordered the Kong Pao check as it is spelled on their menu. The carpet in this place is filthy and the booths are old. I was looking at the corners of the booths and they were all ripped or had some damage. I doubt I will ever go back to this place for any meal.

Wow, talk a about quick good ol fashion Chinese with FANTASTIC service! Great food and so quick!! In and out and a great meal if you have picky kids! The lady who looks as though she owns the joint held my 4 year daughters hand while they escorted us to the table.. so cool!

The egg rolls from this place are my favorite- I requested to have atleast two egg rolls tonight and somehow that spiralled into a 178 dollar bill- it happens when the food is amazing (and you have 13 people) One is a vegetarian- so she barely counts as an eater 2Broccolli beef 2Mongolian beef kung pao shrimp Kung pao chicken cashew chicken 2orange chicken sweet and sour pork moo shu vegetable (burrito looking objects) vegetable chow mein egg fried rice 12won tons 12egg rolls 3good ole steamed rice This place is a deal and if you live in NB or CM and you haven't been here, you're missing out. take out always takes 10-15 minutes- no matter how busy it is.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
