This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. I've been eating at the Oroville location for many years and was really excited that they open a Chico location. A few of my favorite items are actually called different things from their Oroville location. Their prawns are amazing are the generals chicken and Mongolian beef. While the Oroville location will always have a special place in my heart, I'm excited to have a location closer to home.

Totally perplexed about the high reviews. Went in to pick up lunch to go. Pretty quick service (came in at the end of the lunch period, not sure if that made a difference). I ordered beef with broccoli and pork fried rice. The broccoli was cooked nicely, beef not too chewy, but I have to say, I've never eaten something that was so brown (read: I'm expecting massive flavor) but sooo bland! I expect Chinese take-out to be saltier and I actually had to add soy and salt to taste anything! The rice had no flavor whatsoever either! Sorry, but even airport Panda Express has this beat. I want to give other dishes a chance, but these were the basics and I expect at least basics to be done well. I'm still lamenting the almost 8 bucks I wasted.

My favorite Chinese place to eat in Chico!! They are always yummy, and take out orders take 10 minutes or less! Very pleased with their prices and great service :)

It's pretty impressive to have a family business for 100 years! The original restaurant is in Oroville and while I feel that one is a little better, this location is really good too. Our family favorites: Walnut Shrimp, Green Bean Chicken, Egg Plant Chicken, Chicken Chow Mien (no veggies) Veggie Egg Rolls, Kung Pao Chicken, Pork Fried Rice, Wonton soup (no veggies) and the Crab and Cream Cheese Wontons. They are always welcoming and friendly. They get their to go orders right too. Everything we've ever ordered here has been absolutely delicious.

I just left this restaurant and I had the worst service. It felt like the wait staff knew because we were a large party and 18% gratuity automatically is added they didn't have to give our group a second thought. A waiter spilled food on my purse and the floor next to my seat and didn't even offer to clean it up or get something for me to clean it. I had to ask for her to bring me napkins to clean up the mess. Service was slow. An individual in my group received a dish that had one shrimp and she asked if she could have what she ordered - a shrimp entree. The cook/staff refused to fix it and said you just have to stir it, the shrimp are on the bottom. A total of three shrimp (including the first one we counted) in the dish. I will not be returning. I hope in the future this restaurant puts more focus into service.

I had high expectations as we were very hungry. Ordered 2 vegetarian Buddha plates. Egg rolls were tasty. Chow mien noodles way too salty. Mushroom foo young was very salty as well. Ordered broccoli w garlic sauce and it was too salty. The tofu sweet and sour was bland. I had to go up to the kitchen area twice to request items as we weren't checked on throughout the meal. They were often chatting amongst themselves. The server was nice just not thorough. One pos it that the place is very clean.

The food are delicious but too greasy and they forget your order sometimes. The only foods that it delicious it egg foo young, special chowmein, special plate number 3, sweet & sour chicken/pork, cream cheese crab wonton, teriyaki chicken, & Mongolian beef only. I would not order anything else aside from these dishes. Tong Fong Low isn't authentic Chinese foods.

The combination plates are minimal on food. Had to order soup and egg rolls extra. NEVER had to at other Chinese restaurants. The fried pork rice was lacking flavor as well as the chicken chow main. The orange chicken was extremely strong with the bitter taste of WAY TOO MUCH orange rinds. Service was nice by the Chinese boy. Based on the food I got to give 2 stars. Service was a 5. Unfortunately though I won't be returning to their establishment.

This is the best Chinese restaurant in Chico. The service is always fast and the food fresh. My wife and I eat here all the time and have never been disappointed. Unlike some of the others, the kitchen is always clean. The Vegies are never over cooked and the chicken done perfect every time. I don't understand some of the bad reviews. Perhaps they prefer Panda Express.

    (5)
  • Matt J.

The chow mein was very bland and over priced for the portion you receive.

Love the rice and great food wouldn't drive across town for it but when I'm on that side it's what I choose!

All the four stars go for the customer service given from the beginning entering the restaurant to checking out I'm personally satisfied with that although the food was not upto the name it was somewhat okay. But I simply care to try out new places and try to connect with others. Since i know the hardship of running a restaurant I would've given five stars but for the food they lost one star. Guys work on the food you'll definitely get the five stars. And keep up the good work good team work.

Good food, good prices and great portions. I had General Chicken for lunch, w steamed rice for $7.50, but $2+ for a soft drink did not amuse, even with free refills. Still, the portion is so big, I took half to go for tomorrow's lunch. (Seriously: half.) But half of "meh" is still meh. The sadly standard American-style Chinese Mystery Glaze was on everything, and General Chicken (complete with little chili pepper notation) is supposed to be spicy, but this was just sharp artificial orange and much too sweet. I get it, we're in Chico, not Chinatown, but if I'm going to an actual sit-down Chinese restaurant, I expect better than Panda Express. I like Panda, but I don't pretend it's any more Chinese than Taco Bell is Mexican. The weak flavor and texture were especially disappointing, considering how good the food is at the Oroville location, where I had gone first. The Chico location doesn't even come close. Atmosphere is modern and pleasant, staff exceptionally attentive. Food was made practically in front of me, and served quickly. Two stars for food, extra star for great service.

I ordered the shrimp and mixed vegetables lunch special to go. They said it would be ten minutes, but I had my meal in five minutes. It was hot and perhaps a bit saltier than I would have liked it but the shrimp was cooked just right. The vegetables were fine, but I enjoy mine crispy. These were a bit logged in the sauce. Pleasant staff and quick service.

I'd like to start off with mentioning that the only reason I gave this place a star is because I HAD to in order to write this review. My family and I had dinner there tonight and I have to say that I left here totally dissatisfied. My family had a party of seven tonight because my mom, sister and niece decided to come visit today. After hearing so much about this place we decided to try it out. We arrived and were seated immediately, ordered our food and were served our drinks. After the food was brought to the table we no longer were even acknowledged. We got our own drinks, had to go ask for napkins, and then had to go ask for containers for the food we were taking home. Upon receiving the bill we were taken by total surprise for the 18% gratuity fee added on!!!! Now I'm ALL for paying for great service, A $25 tip is worth saying thank you to anyone that helped make our dinner enjoyable. I asked to speak to the manager about my concerns but all I received was a look of surprise as if he didn't understand why I didn't agree why I should pay for a service I didn't receive. Well long story short, I will not be returning. I wish I could have written a positive review but that wasn't the case this time around. To tell the truth this is the first bad review I've written.

I tried. And I was excited. You know. To support a family restaurant and show some love to a POC owned business. And I'm still glad that I went because the service was above and beyond great. An impeccably clean eating establishment, which I appreciate. So what's the problem? The problem is that the food is way, way too Americanized. I like Chinese food Chinese style. This is rare for a non-Asian. but its true. I brought my Mongolian beef home, washed it off, sauteed it in a little oil and added some local Asian style veggies and viola! Good eatin'.

  • Lo P.

Price and portions are good but the food is waaay too greasy and lacks flavor. The only reason why I eat here is because my step dad loves their beef chow mein. (I don't know why..) At least the inside's nice, food comes out fast, and their orange chicken is alright.

  • John T.

The spicy curry chicken/mix vegzs, salt n peppa dry chops n rice, were a pleasure to ingest and savor the flavor this evening! yommeh! :-D

nice variety, decent prices, i love that it is a local business (not a giant, generic chain), i usually get kung pao something which is always good. service hasn't been the best but it's convenient and tastes great.

Gave this place a try. Fast service. Beautiful atmosphere. The food however, I was not impressed. I ordered their spicy garlic chicken, rice and chow mein. Looks yummy but Tasteless. The portions were too much and pricey. I have a favorite Chinese place in mind and will continue to stick to that place.

  • Mike S.

They have big servings and good prices and the food is great. But last night I found a hair in my special plate. Definitely grossed me out and I'm not sure if I will be able to eat there again.

  • Tricia L.

Why this place is popular is beyond me. I'm desperate for Chinese food so I gave it another try. I wonder how a sit down chinese restaurant can have my to go order ready in 5 minutes. I can only assume that it's been sitting there. This mght possibly the last time I'm getting chinese food there.

  • Erica G.

The food is really good. I recommend the war won ton soup, the Kungpao chicken, walnut prawn, and the special chowmein. Actually everything thing I've tried is really good.

  • Clay O.

Typical Chinese flavors, but...portions so large, I can hardly believe it! We get the vegetarian dishes -- veggies and tofu -- and if we're not so hungry we'll split one dish. We also like their veggie soup. PLEASE open a location in or near-to downtown Chico! WARNING! They say they close at 9:00pm, but we've been locked out as early as 8:30pm! Twice.

  • Wei S.

i don't know why there are a lot person said this resturant serve good Chinese food. As a Chinese, I want to say Chinese food that they are serving is terrible. Are u sure kong pao chicken is made of chicken strip instead of chicken small nugget?! And flavor is over sweet. that is not good for your healthy! Also beef they made is not fresh. They use starch cover beef so that you can not taste much. But when I ordered to go and back home, you know what? I found all beef stick together, and the starch smell bad. I wouldn't definitely come again. The chef technical is not deserve on Chinese cuisine.

  • Veronika O.

I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food usually, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the flavors of the food we got today. We had a big group and ordered veggie chow mein, lemon chicken, general chicken, kung pao beef, egg rolls, shrimp, pork fried rice and hot & sour soup. I realize the flavors aren't traditional. ...but everything was delicious! Officially my new favorite Chinese restaurant!

Terrible and expensive. Had heard wonderful things about this place and I was excited to try. Ordered our dinner to take home and eat and we barely touched it. It was greasy and was awful! Waste of money!

  • S C.

You must try the green bean in garlic sauce. I also like their mushroom mushu, eggplants in garlic sauce, General chicken, and hot and sour soup. Chicken wings have a lot of flavor too. Price - reasonable Service - fast and friendly Restaurant - bright and clean

I was extremely upset with the service here . I was calling in lunch for my office and when I called , Joe answered the phone . He was completely rude and disrespectful . I was asking questions off of their menu. He kept cutting me off . I was asking to upgrade the basic noodles to chow mien and he said they don't do that. I would have to order the chow mien entree separately and the chicken dish separately . I don't understand why I couldn't pay a fee to upgrade to chow mien. He then started laughing and told me he would love to substitute steak for his mashed potatoes at a steakhouse but that that's not going to happen is it? How rude ! Completely disrespectful to customers . I asked for his manager and he laughed and said it was him . I asked for his managers name who is Brian . He didn't even want to give me that or his number or any details on when I could get a hold of him. Completely unacceptable to treat a paying customer who was calling in for a large order , in that manner . Just because I was asking to pay an upgrade to chow mien . I called Gingers in town - who was HALF the cost, quick , friendly , and had amazing food ! Definitely going back to Gingers. !!!

I went here to celebrate my mother's birthday yesterday because she was craving chinese food and this place was "new" in town. Frankly, I didn't expect the experience to blow me out of the water but I was still left a little disappointed. Service: The service was great, which is why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star. The waitress was very patient, accomodating and quick. She withstood my family's questions usual chatter and distractions for ~5 minutes before we were ready to order. They were very quick in getting the bill to us too (before we asked), which was a negative point for me. Food: The vegetation wonton soup I ordered was okay. It could've been better if there was more flavor to it. The portion sizes are quite huge but the taste is meh. We also ordered the general's chicken, kung pao shrimp, vegetarian noodles and snow pea vegetables, none of which we could finish. If you want quantity over quality this is the place for you (although I have no alternatives). Decor: The decor is that which you may find at a Krispy Kreme or another fast food chain with the tables offering ample seating. Nothing out of the ordinary. Plus point: I didn't fall asleep eating (I was exhausted).

I'm going to have to say this place looks a little under rated from previous reviews. Quite honestly I don't recall the place posting any signs that state "Real Authentic Chinese Food" So in all honesty they shouldn't be held to that standard. Now, far as service, I've been greeted promptly even when their packed. My orders have come up done very efficiently, and as quickly as the food comes up its not just tossed on the plate, looks neat, and great portions, as with many other Chinese Food locations locally. The lemon chicken is by far the best I've ever had, maybe just a tad sweeter than anywhere else, but that's fine by me, I eat every bite, and won't share! lol Had only one off dish there one time which was the pork fried rice, it was maybe just a little over sauced, but other than that I can't deny them kudos for polite greetings, prompt service, clean dining area, above average food taste, and thanking me on my way out the door. Probably one thing they could do to improve, is keep their empty boxes in a stack out of site in the back room, or toss them in the dumpster faster, seemed kinda odd one night they had a pile flowing out kinda into view of dining area. Besides that, I recommend you give them a try for dine in, or take out, and explore the menu. Price is pretty fair considering the portions you get! Keep up the good work Charlie!

The food is pretty good and quick. I was annoyed by the employees who responded with no problem when I said thank you.

This place was terrible!!! I don't know why anyone gives it a good review. We ordered the walnut shrimp, the chicken chow mein, cashew chicken and kung pao chicken. The shrimp was the only thing worth eating and there were only about 10 of them for $15. The kung pao was the worst. The sauce was starchy, sticky, thick and sweet not light and spicy like typical kung pao. The chow mein tasted like it had been cooked in oil that had gone rancid. I was not impressed and when the bill came for $60 we thought there must be a mistake because that is seriously expensive for three people to have Chinese food. I would never go back and would warn everyone I know to stay away as well.

We ordered the war wonton soup, vegetable shrimp and Kung pow beef. They were all amazing. Some of the best dishes I've ever had. The portions are large. The service is friendly and efficient.

I love that they use good quality meat and white chicken meat, not that fatty gross quality meat that some Chinese food tend to have. Yummy stuff.

  • Brice C.

Went with a friend and got the orange chicken, chicken chow mein, walnut shrimp, and won ton soup. The orange chicken tasted like someone bought frozen chicken nuggets and coated them with a third party sauce from WinCo, the chicken chow mein wasn't half bad (eating some left overs now) but it's clear the noodles are subpar as is the chicken which appears to be preshaped chunks from a box, the walnut shrimp also tasted like it was frozen originally and the won ton soup lacked anything resembling flavor. And the cost? Well I could've paid damn near identical prices at Turandot in town and gotta MUCH better quality food. Their Tangerine Chicken is amazing! Skip this place, anyone who gives it 5 stars must not have had high quality Chinese food.

Excellent Asian food, great prices and super friendly staff. The cuisine is top notch for little old Chico better than most of the other larger restaurants. The prices are reasonable not a budget breaker. The staff is courteous, very helpful and always provide good suggestions.

Tong Fong Lows has been an area favorite for sometime. I used to frequent their Oroville location when I work in the area. In general, they have good food, good prices, and large portions. Recently, they have raised their prices, changed their to go containers, and lessened their food portions. While I understand food prices have steadily increased over the last several years, it seems the customers are paying for all the price increases. Their new "to go" containers don't have dividers. So everyone into the pool! My brown rice was inedible because it was drowned in the sauce from my General Chicken...Gross!!! Still good food, but overall quality has slipped a little.

My favorite Chinese food restaurant in Chico or anywhere. The staff is super efficient, friendly, authentic, hard working and are amazing cooks. The food is excellent and is reasonably priced. I love this place so much.

Love this place! Friendly staff & delicious food. We love the chicken plate, we buy two and it feeds a family of five.

This is the 2nd family owned restaurant. The original is in oroville. My experience was not the same as I expected, which was based on my experience at there oroville store. I got the same thing I always get. the chicken plate number 4 with sweet and sour chicken, chicken chow mein with more noodles than sprouts, and chicken fried rice. Normally the dish is to die for. Unfortunately this wasn't the case in Chico. The food was a Luke warm. The chicken was very dry and the rice was slightly hard. I've never had a problem in oroville however I know one person cannot be in two places at once. But definitely should have someone checking consistency Seems like standards slipped :(...also got into it with the cashier he short changed us and I was told I would receive a call the fallowing day from management and never did and didn't care enough to fight it. Sad because oroville is always fresh and never had a problem. Overall food wasn't inedible just highly disappointed when I know what to expect.

So very good! For years i did not eat Chinese, because it was all so Americanized and generic tasting, but Too Fong Low has reeled me back in. i just love it and have tried many items on the menu.

  • Jonathan K.

It was gross. I went to eat at this place while I was high and that still didn't make any of it better. The food tasted like it was reheated in the microwave. The chicken was unnaturally soft, which other reviewers said was great I just felt like it was processed in some way. Greasy and soggy were two words that come to mind. The wonton soup had no flavor. A very simple thing to make. Any food is better then this, even dog food.

Tong Fong's is a pretty decent place to get a meal. The quality, well it isn't exactly top notch. And it's pretty darn greasy. But it's still good eats. It hits the spot. And it's cheap with guaranteed leftovers. Nice customer service, never had a negative experience. And it's extremely clean inside! They're very quick too, even when the place is packed. You get your food in under 15 minutes, piping hot. You can call in your order while leaving the mall after shopping and it'll be ready to go when you walk in. I recommend the place when you need to grab some quick grub with a friend but you still want to sit down for a bit and catch up.

I wanted to come to Tong Fong Low ever since it stole the Best of Chico from Happy Garden. I figured it must be better, right? Well it was definitely a let down. Should have listened to yelp. The restaurant is in the old Baja Fresh, so it has a fast food atmosphere. I was surprised to see it so busy, busier than any other Chinese place in Chico. This place was packed and people were constantly coming in and out for pick up. The kitchen is exposed so you can see the constant movement and frying. The service was fine, they came over to check on us every now and then. Overall it felt busy. Onto the food. The egg rolls were delicious! They were only veggies, but they were so garlicky I loved them! Plus they dip the ends in tempura, which I had never seen before and it was a nice touch. But that's where things went down hill. The sweet and sour pork was decent, but the sauce tasted like a canned sauce. The fried rice was bland with tiny shreds of pork. The chow mein was also bland and reminded me of Panda Express. My boyfriend said the food all tasted the same- bland. Overall the food is okay, nothing special, but not gross by any means. I didn't find the whole experience to be worth the price. There are far better Chinese restaurants in Chico for the price. I won't be back.

  • Jiok S.

The only reason I go there is because its fast takeout and close to my house....thats why i give it 2 stars. But the food is always drenched with way too much sauce and very salty!!! I ask for 1/2 the sauce and it still comes out the same. The vegis in every dish are cooked to mush! Taste is ok but execution terrible. They have no concept of cook to order. We keep saying were never going back but options are limited here!!

4.4 / 5 stars Not the best Chinese food I've ever had, but most certainly the best Chinese food available in Chico. For the first 3 years of my Chico State career, I regretably made the mistake of ordering take-out from shady establishments's near campus, mostly because proximity and ease outweighs quality and taste when your a lazy, stoned college student. But now that those misguided years are behind me, Tong Fong Low is the only place I will order take-out when visiting the city of trees. 4 stars doesn't quite do this place justice, but since I have tasted the pinnacle of American-Chinese food at San Tung in San Francisco, I can't give TFL 5 stars since it's not quite on that level. Tong Fong Low's chow mein is sensational, and when accompanied by one of their glorious chicken dishes (orange and sesame are outstanding) and white rice, you and a friend can stuff yourselves silly for about $15 total. And when you consider the quality of TFL's product compared to it's Chico competition, it's hard to find a better dollar-for-dollar food deal in Chico. Tough for automobile-less students to get to, but well-worth bothering a friend with a car to take you. Or you can just ride along on your roommates next trip to Win-Co and grub while they shop (same business park). Tong Fong Low is a Chico-must.

  • Nick L.

Anyone giving this place a 5 star rating needs to get out more! I agree with a lot of the positive things people are saying about this place. The staff was very friendly, the service was good, and you get a lot of food for your money. However none of these are reasons to give Tong Fong Low, a 5 star rating. Food is still the bottom line, and quantity doesn't mean quality. I'm not saying the food is bad, but it's not great either. If you are looking for fast food and are tired of the typical take-out fare, then this is a good option. The food is decent, and you can easily feed a family of 4 for under 30 bucks.

I had lunch here. It was a tasty and flavorful meal and the restaurant gives you a view of the kitchen. The menu is priced well. My only complaint is the fried rice lacked flavor!!

Just ordered takeout over the phone it only took 10 min so it was ready when I got there. I got BBQ pork chow mein orange chicken and sweet and sour pork with the sauce on the side I also got two containers of steamed rice. The BBQ pork is amazing the chicken comes with a lot and the pork is also really good. This is the best Chinese food I have ever had everything was so good. I will be returning to order some more quality Chinese food.

I have been eating here and the original in Oroville for 40+ years. We love, love, love this place and the Egg Foo Yung is the best ever. When there last Saturday for a birthday lunch and we were not disappointed. 1 Chop Suey, 1 Orange Chicken and 2 Egg Foo Yung. For our sides we had 2 fried rice, 1 white rice and 1 pan fried noodles. 8 ladies all enjoyed soda's and 2 ordered a cocktail. So with a party of 8 hungry gals we actually had food left over and tip included for our party, out the door for about $61.00. Service was quick and attentive. Great time was had by all.

I'd like to give it 4.5 stars, if it were an option. The first time we came here, we were sorely disappointed. My husband and I both had the special plate of Egg Foo Young, Pork Fried Rice, and Pork Chow Mein. Both us were like, meh. We decided to give it another try, and we are so glad we did. I got Sesame Chicken, and my husband got the Tong Fong Low Special. Both were OUTSTANDING. I have never had such tender chicken anywhere. We have since gone back and had Curry Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Asparagus Chicken, Szechuan Chicken. All, again, were the tenderest chicken, and the seasoning was perfect and flavorful, and not greasy or oily. The vegetables were very fresh. The pièce de résistance, however, is the Wor Won Ton Soup, which is THE BEST I've ever had in my life. Huge bowl of soup, with the most lovely, rich broth, and a mountain of chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, and won tons. Incredible. It looks almost like a bowl of stew, because it is so dense with meat and vegetables. Each time we have been, the staff has been friendly, and our food has come out within 5 minutes of ordering, no matter how busy they are. Their prices are low, their portions are large, and the restaurant is very clean. GO THERE! :)

The best Chinese food $20 can buy in Chico! Of all the fast, standard take-out type places, this is hands down the freshest, tastiest, highest quality. If you're not in the mood to drop huge bucks, go here. Definitely.

Being a transplant from the Bay Area, I have been on the hunt for tasty ethnic food in Chico since I got here nearly 2 years ago. Several people have recommended TFL to me as being amazing, so I am giving it a try. FOOD: I've been here several times now, the last time being yesterday. My food was drenched in sauce making it taste overly seasoned. Also, the veggies were WAY overcooked to the point of being limp and mushy. The spring rolls I ordered were literally dripping with grease. The rice was good though (I had brown). AMBIANCE: I was expecting a "fancy" Chinese restaurant, but was surprised when the decor and layout of it resembled a Panda Express - open kitchen, no tablecloths, paper place mats (with advertising for other businesses on them!), plastic cups and paper napkins. SERVICE: The service was just OK - not bad but not memorable - I had to ask for things a lot. No refills on the sodas, either. PRICE: Ambiance and service aside, the food was OK and plentiful. It's a good value if you are looking for that. OVERALL: It is not the best Chinese food that I have ever had, but I think my standards are relatively high. I am still looking for my "go to" place for a tasty and more fancy Chinese meal. Message me if you have a suggestion!

super fast time between order over phone and available for pickup. I like that I can see the whole kitchen.. and not to be racist or anything but nothing is better than a chinese restraunt filled with chinese workers in the kitchen!!! And I am pretty sure they know what they are doing-they speak average english and I love it-makes me feel like its more authentic. food is great and tons.. great portions. never dined in-always takeout. and they make suggestions in order to save me money-like a package deal instead of a bunch of a-la-carte... love it.

I don't get on that side of town much but I was happy with my experience there. The restaurant was clean and almost had the feel of a burger joint with how the floor plan is laid out. The food was fresh and obviously hadn't been sitting allowed to turn to goop as I so often find in fast food chinese restaurants.

Best Chinese food in northern California. So glad they opened a restaurant in Chico so I wouldn't have to go to Oroville for it. Friendly service, very quick for take-out, and reasonable prices.

If you like fast and good Chinese food, this is the place to go. We go here a couple of times a year and for the most part we are happy. It's not the best, but it's also not the worse. The only thing I really dislike about this place is that they don't add vegetables to their meat plate. Most places you order sweat and sour chicken and you end up getting carrots, pineapple, green beans... but not here. Also, their batter is a little thick for most of their plates. However, if you want a quick and tasty lunch, to-go, this is the place I would recommend.

I give it 3 out of 5 because I'm Chinese and the food is more American then traditional Chinese. Otherwise if you want a place to have fast hot Semi-Chinese style food, this is it.

SO GOOD! I love Chinese food, and I have lived in Sacramento and San Francisco, which both have amazing Chinese food. When I moved to Chico, I was extremely disappointed in the Chinese food selection; Egg Roll King, Windy's, Peking, Wok n' Roll are all crap.. but then I saw an advertisement for Tong Fong Low and tried it... Definitely the best Chinese food in Chico! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Average prices, good service, and DELICIOUS food!

It dawned on me today as I ate at Tong Fong Low that maybe I just don't like Chinese food anymore. Maybe my palate has evolved out of the Mandarin/Cantonese cuisine that I first sampled when I was in high school and moved on to the lighter, less saucy fare that Thai, Japaneses, Korean, and Vietnamese foods offer. I've yet to find a Chinese place in Chico that gives me the same, "Wow!" that I experienced in Eugene, Oregon during the early 1980s when I sampled Phillip Chang's almond chicken subgum chow mein. Even though these folks at Ton Fong Low de-throned Happy Garden in the C&R's "best of" contest, I just can't see where this tops all other Chinese places in Chico. The only descriptive words I can come up with are, "thick, colorless, and syrupy." I've had better fast, chain-restaurant Chinese food I'm afraid.

First I would like to send my sincerest condolences to Peeking Restaurant in downtown Chico. After my experience at Tong Fong Low, I do not think we will be coming back to Peeking. I initially started out going to Peeking today, but for some reason they were closed yesterday and today. Since I have been a little under the weather, I wanted a good hot and sour soup to clear out my sinuses. I remembered Tong Fong Low from over a year ago when I stepped in for a quick bite. My partner and I went across town to Tong Fong Low and ordered a bowl of Hot and Sour soup to share and I ordered the kung pao chicken lunch special and she ordered the mixed vegetables lunch special with noodles. The hot and sour soup was very tasty and definitely had a punch to it. My sinuses haven't felt this good in over a week! They use red pepper instead of black so the flavor is a lot deeper than in most other restaurant's hot and sour soup. Our dishes arrived shortly and their portions are HUGE! The look on my partner's face when she took that first bite is something I will remember for a long time. She had lived in Northern China for seven months in the early 2000s, and has lamented that she cannot find authentic Chinese food in the states. That first bite, she got the most surprised look on her face and she turned to me and said: "Oh my god, this tastes exactly like I am back in China!" I dug into my jung pao chicken and found it incredibly delicious. The flavors were incredibly complex-- not something you expect from a restaurant that is housed where an old Baja Fresh used to be. Long story short, we loved it. My partner got all misty-eyed at the authenticity of the food, and fell in love with being able to get a superb lunch for two for under $20. For those of you who aren't used to authentic Chinese food, then this might not be the place for you. For those of you who are looking for that "real Chinese food" experience, give Tong Fong Low a try, you won't be disappointed.

I purchased take-out. I'll just describe my food: Sweet and Sour Chicken -Fried, battered chicken pieces that actually tasted good -A sweet and sour sauce that was horribly salty and tasted like it had melted plastic in it; my guess is that it was over a heater all day and all of the water had simmered out, and also that there was actually melted plastic in it -A small amount of white rice -No vegetables, no fruits Beef Chow Mein -A large amount of two different soggy vegetables -Beef was OK -Noodles were covered in a salty, bitter sauce Bottom line: This place was moderately expensive, but the food was horrible. Panda Express would be a step-up from Tong Fong Low.

From briefing other reviews, it seems this place truly yields mixed results. My experience was extremely disappointing and we won't be returning. This was a few weeks back, so I can't recall the exact names of the dishes, but one was an appetizer of salt and pepper fried calamari and the other was garlic chicken, I believe. The fried dish was the worst offender as it was absolutely terrible -- the color was almost creamy reflecting how uncooked it was and the meat within was unpleasantly textured in that seeming not so fresh way. We gave up after trying to make our way through several pieces out of stubbornness. The chicken dish came cooked with mushrooms which was a bit of a surprise and had we not been sharing an entree it would have been a pleasant one, but unfortunately I am allergic so we had to ask for a replacement. The mushrooms weren't mentioned on the menu and seemed a bit odd to be paired with this meal so I hadn't thought to ask, but this seems to occur off and on at Chinese restaurants depending on the cook so I've learned my lesson about talking to the waiter first every time from now on. As we started to eat, the power went out, and after about 10 minutes it became apparent it wasn't going to come back on so they started closing up. The waitress was insistent upon our paying with cash and stared at us blankly when we explained that wasn't possible as we didn't bring any as we'd come in intending to pay with a debit or credit card. After asking her to speak with the manager, we were able to pay by card using a manual reader so we could be charged later. The manager himself was cordial though and the staff friendly overall, but unfortunately the rest of the experience was so underwhelming that I spent the next couple days smarting over having spent $20+ on a meal we barely touched when we could have gone to Rice Bowl (which has improved a lot and while nothing locally quite touches on Bay area quality of Chinese food, it's worth checking out!) and had something better for the same price.

Tong Fong Low is the families favorite Chinese restaurant in Chico. We used to go to their restaurant in Oroville and were very happy when they opened the one in Chico earlier this year! We always get the no. 2 dinner and occasionally add the walnut prawns - yum! The food is consistently great and the service is fast and very friendly.

Okay. I live locally and have ALLOT of local Chinese food having lived here 35 years. Since opening their Chico restaurant, my family have become known regulars here. The service is always friendly and helpful, the price is reasonable. and the atmosphere is clean and pleasant. When my family is trying to select where to eat for the evening, we pick TFL's more than any other restaurant in Chico. They make consistently clean, fresh, delicious Chinese food. My personal favorite is the Peking Pork ribs.

This is the best Chinese food in town. The prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. I highly recommend the Orange Chicken. It is made with tender white meat and has excellent flavoring.

Great Chinese Food! Have eaten here several times and don't know what people are talking about when they say it is greasy. It always comes out hot and fresh. The Tong Fong Low Special is the best, a little bit of everything. Great service and great food. Our family loves it!!!

OK Chinese food. It seemed a bit greasy to me. The vegetables were fresh. It was nothing to write home about I prefer Happy Garden or Din Ho much more.

Ate here a couple of times and got a lot of food for the price. What I really liked was that they gave me the option of brown rice if I wanted instead of white. Good to have healthy options.

I went here with a few friends who said this is one of the best chinese food places in Chico. I don't go out for chinese food often so I was excited to go to a sit down place hoping that implied a meal above and beyond my experiences with the sort of chow mein you pick up at the mall. I ordered the seafood chow mein, and I didn't have the highest expectations, but the seafood really wasn't that fresh. My grandfather is a commercial fisherman so I guess I'm a little spoiled when it comes to fresh fish. I did appreciate that it had fish, shrimp and calamari in it, although they were definitely overcooked. The price was pretty low for all that seafood and the size of the dish. I'm sure there is hope for other things on the menu. I had that same greasy-not-so-good feeling that you usually get from chinese fast food afterwards, which was disappointing. The place was pretty much empty when we were there for an early dinner, service was fairly attentive. Waiter did mix up our credit cards and I was charged for my friends meal instead of my own, but we didn't mention it. I can see why some people like this place, but it's just not for me.

General's Tofu... too good to be true!!! And I had enough to eat for dinner, and have THREE sessions of leftovers.

Great food, nice people what more can a diner ask for! Been here twice over the past two weeks and might go again before flying home. Fresh tasty ingredients! Good prices and large portions, each time I've had leftovers to take home with me!

I've ordered both for there and ToGo. Big serving size of General's Chicken which came with a serving of rice (steamed or fried), although for the ToGo order seems to be a smaller amount so it fits in the boxes they use. Very fast service and tasty.

Love this place. Probably go there several times a month. Its tons for food for a low price, I can feed 5 on $20 - and that's with left overs. So glad the place came to Chico. With today's economy its nice to find an expensive place to make dinner for me!!

Chicken chow mein was great. Big, fat, greasy noodles. You feel guilty eating it, but it's delicious. Sweet and sour is good to eat in restaurant but might not be good for take out -- they seem to flash fry the piece when you order them so they are crisp and golden when you get them, but they might not be great after a a trip in the car. The sauce I had was fine, tasted like any other sweet and sour sauce. Egg drop soup was really good with lots of stuff in it. The restaurant itself is nice, big, clean. Kind of minimalist, urban decor. Nicer inside than lots of Chinese restaurants. The servings are mountainous and the prices are low-average. I don't agree with the previous reviewers comment about Panda Express.

High quality cheap Chinese food! I love how they use only white meat chicken. Green Been Chicken is my favorite.

Chinese food. What can you say? Large servings and CHEAP! Clean dining area, friendly staff. Tried 4 or 5 dishes and they were all good. The hot and sour soup is probably the best I've had.

We have tried almost everything on the menu. Fast service, friendly help, great balance of flavors and large portions. We only order two items and still take food home. The garlic green beans are to die for. Not only good food but they give a lot back to the community, for example they are Northstate symphony sponsors. Try it, and you will see how authentic they are,

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
