Best Sushi in Chico by far! I am a huge Sushi fan and have traveled far distances just to try new sushi spots and Gen Kai is by far the best quality in Chico. They have great prices, awesome service, fresh fish and delicious flavor combos. I would eat here every day if I could!
(5)Garrett B.
My first trip to Gen Kai was fairly successful. My girlfriend and I have had sushi at several places in nor cal. This wasn't the best we've ever had, but it was probably one of the best in Redding/Chico area. Most of the menu is very reasonably priced, from cooked foods to the sushi and the drinks. Our waitress Anne was great, she came by enough to be attentive but not hovering or bugging. She was very friendly and polite. We sat at the bar where the happy hour specials were in effect all weekend. We ordered the Avocado & Unagi roll, Alaskan roll, Bay Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Saturday Night fever roll(specialty roll), and finally sake for me and hot tea for her. All the rolls were great and very reasonably priced, except for the Saturday night fever roll. It had the taste of butane from the torch used on the toppings of the roll. It was also almost nearly double the price of the regular rolls. Other then that it was a great experience. I would defiantly go back again.

Love this place! Awesome food. Good prices. Good people. 1$ beers during happy hour. The Ahi Poki salad is bomb! The scallop shooters are bomb. All the sushi is made by well qualified sushi chefs.

This is certainly not the Gen-Kai I used to know and love. The service was excellent, the Wait-staff friendly and helpful. Then it occurred to me.. the place I loved was in a different location, owners have changed several times, and the times have changed. The sushi was fresh and well made, although it looks like they changed from typical short grain sticky sushi rice to Cal-rose(Genetically modified) rice. Instead of a little bit of sunomono I was given a larger than I needed lettuce based salad with a dressing that just did not thrill. The miso soup.. often one of my favorites was less than thrilling. The tempura shrimp was the skinniest I have seen.. making me wonder if larger shrimp were split down the middle. The atmosphere was more sports bar and bar-bar. Eh music for a regular restaurant, a bit out of place for a Japanese one. Décor is very generic. Nice enough, but failed to create a mood for the food. All in all, a bit less stereotypical Japanese and a bit more college student hangout. Maybe it is better for business, And for the most part the food was "good." but I left less than thrilled. The new Gen-Kai is not for me.

Came in on Wednesday night, started off with some spicy jalapeno peach martinis! Next to the wasabi my spice needs were met! Ro was our server that night, completely attentive making sure we got our food and drinks quickly! As far as sushi goes in this town probably the most consistent! A good way to spend my day off!
(5)Jenna L.
The location was clean & nice. The staff were all friendly, I ordered the Devon roll, very good and the Gashia roll? It looked ok, the salmon seemed very dry and I ate 1 bite and wasn't pleased, it didn't seem rotten but not fresh & the flavor wasn't great. I nicely asked the waitress about it & she said she'd see what she could do... They took $2.00 off :/ I really thought removing it completely would have solved the problem better... All of the rolls range from 10-15, maybe a bit high, but not outrageous... Don't think I'd come back though... Not correcting a problem really irked me...

The sushi rolls are over the top delicious. The combination of ingredients that are within each roll explode the taste buds with flavor. This is definitely a date night spot because I would be broke if my fiancée and I are here every night. It's a welcoming atmosphere and you get seated instantly. The reason I give four stars is because the service is hit-and-miss. I've been here a few times and sometimes the service is great and sometimes it is not. That was completely dependent on the waitresses that were working at the time we went, is my guess. Even with that small knock, the food cannot be beaten. That's why you go to restaurants, to eat.
(4)Miguel P.
The sushi rolls were pretty darn tasty, but sweet Jesus the food took a lifetime to get to us. We sat there so long waiting for the second round of rolls, it felt like we hadn't even eaten yet. They didn't comp anything, they just smiled and shrugged and said sorry like idiot children running a lemonade stand that ran out of sugar. Mismanaged kitchen, ye be warned. Food gets a 4, but the service/kitchen gets a 1. So, overall it feels closer to a 2 than a 3. Some of the better tasting sushi I've had in Chico, but if I ever eat there again, I'm definitely calling my order in ahead of time so I can avoid the annoyance of that herein-speed kitchen.
(2)Zachary G.
Sake (salmon) was not fresh and chewy. Decent rolls but after a few experiences here it's an overall bad experience. Poor service, poor quality, over priced.
(1)Jaimie M.
Their sushi and atmosphere are good enough to get 4 or even 5 stars, but their service is what made me bump them down to 3. Any roll I've gotten there, I have always liked. They have a large selection of rolls and I'm never disappointed. By the food that is. 80% of the time I come here, the service is terrible! The other night we waited 20 mins for our drinks (which were sake and a Sapporo, nothing fancy), and 45 mins for our sushi! The waitress didn't even keep us updated as to why it was taking so long or apologize. Not only that, but she brought the check out with our sushi: maybe we wanted more food, why are we being rushed? It wasn't super busy or anything. Also, my water cup remained empty most of the dinner despite multiple servers walking past in a hurry and glancing down at my barren glass. Most of my family actually refuse to come here anymore because of the poor service, if Gen Kai doesn't start staffing better they may lose out on more customers!
(3)Jocey S.
This is my absolute favorite sushi restaurant in Chico! I am obsessed with the Help Me Rhonda and Original Presley rolls!! Whenever I go, I never pass up on a Wakame (seaweed) salad with some sriracha on top. If you order takeout, your order is made quickly, unlike other sushi places in Chico. I really just love this place.
(5)Bekah A.
Terrible sashimi, it tasted old and the miso wasn't too great either. Definitely not worth the price, but it's a nice looking place.
(1)Mandy I.
My favorite spot in town. They have the best specialty rolls. Great staff, close to downtown, and the food is always delicious.
(5)James B.
We went to try the all you can eat sushi and it was packed busy, it was expensive and the sushi was very low quality. This place is truly an insult to Japanese cuisine. The fish was not fresh, it smelled fishy and was slightly slimey. But that's not all, I suspect that they use lower grade fish for the all you can eat nights, also they intentionally take 20 minutes or more to get you food and they limit how much you can order at a time, if that isn't horrible enough...they also have a time limit on how long you can eat. Well this place is terrible and I will not be going back.
(1)Kelly H.
Chico's best sushi. I'm from Sacramento/San Francisco, thus I have very high standards for sushi and until tonight I had yet to have found a place that I felt met my expectations. Gen Kai is definitely my favorite sushi place in Chico! We ordered the Jamie roll and the Ben 10 roll and received a free California roll with a coupon - everything was so delicious! I will definitely be going to Gen Kai again.
(4)C P.
This place is terrible. Terrible service and even worse food. This restaurant is an insult to Japanese cuisine. Server never even asked how our food was. Had a great experience a couple of years ago...Not the same. Could not finish food.
(1)Erin H.
4 stars only because the wait was longer than need be as there were only 4 other tables two+ sushi chefs, and it was early. We got the Jamie...yum! The Hand grenade were not as heavenly as usual. We also got The Ben 10 which is nice and the Prestly was also ok.
(4)Stunt S.
I was very dissatisfied! Small portion service was not great! I wish the old owner Scott was still there! Not going back
(1)Michael W.
We were loyal customers to this place until last night. Showed up at 6 PM at the Sushi bar, ordered our drinks, food and appetizer pretty quickly. Got our Appetizer and drinks and was waiting for our food. At 7:40 PM our waitress gave us our check and included the food we never received. We advised her we never received our food and the waitress looked at us as if we did. She told us to wait and she walked over to a man who i assume was the manager and he appeared annoyed and told her to talk to someone else. Our waitress left us waiting there for another 10 to 15 minutes then came out and gave us a check for the drinks and appetizer. I asked her if our food was ever coming out and she said someone else must have gotten our food. Im not going to lie, I was looking for an apology. We signed our check and she said said thanks for coming in...LOL. I never received an apology and our date night was sitting at a Sushi bar watching chefs make sushi.
(1)Victor C.
The service is among the worst when it comes to sushi Japanese restaurants. I order two rolls to go and it took no kidding about an hour, and the restaurant was empty. I don't understand why it took forever. The server said it would take 10 min and after the 30 min mark I had to ask how long. 15 min later she said that the chefs where working on it. At the end the texture of the sushi was not done properly because the chefs were in a hurry or simply this place is just bad. Won't be going here to eat sushi again.
(1)Whitney R.
Ok...Freaken Amazing! My Boyfriend and I have been 4 times in the last month, we are addicted! The Chefs are awesome, the service is great. Each time we have been in their the service was fast. The rolls!!!! Oh the delicious sweet creations of wonderment! I LOVE the DEVON roll, I get it everytime. The rolls are big and filling and I always get mine with rice paper instead and AMAZING! The Chico roll is simple and delicious as is the california and the spider! The prices are not that bad. We got 3 Specialty Rolls, a Chico Roll, California Roll and 2 Drinks for 58 bucks! We will continue to eat here and have a great time!!!!!
(5)Jeff C.
WOW reading the other reviews I thought for a min I hit them on a bad day. Then I thought about it and No... First don't bother washing your hands before you go, because after handling their menu you are going to need to wash your hands to eat (finger food) safely. My menu was stuck together like a deck of cards that had beer spilled on them; the other menu on the bar had visible food on the cover and page it was open to. Since it was my first time here I pushed on. I ordered veggie tempura, and a chefs choice plate. The tempura was a great predictor. 8 dollars for 7 pieces of tempura, the asparagus was crunchy, the carrot was mushy, you get the point. On top of the poor cooking the batter clearly was no chilled because it was overly thin and dripping in oil. I had spring rolls from Panda Express with less oil, it was running down my fingers, and the thin over oiled batter meant none of the dipping sauce would stick, so why they bothered to even serve it makes me wonder. The overly thick cuts of veggies, poorly cooked, and oil soaked, I would pass if i were you. The sushi was nigiri style and some pieces were cleanly cut, but others were not so nice; one piece in particular looked horrid. As I worked my way down the plate I was thoroughly unimpressed when I found two Ants sharing my meal with me. They were enjoying the mini octopus tentacles. After I dispatched those Ants I found their buddy browsing the bar (Ants are hard to see on the dark granite). The maguro was cut so poorly the you could see the rice between the separating fascicles. The only two things the chef did was place a piece orange on the salmon and score the Tako to make it less chewy, amazingly though the unagi was cut poorly and one side was rubbery and chewy. There was no wasbi under any of the fish like I would expect from a pricey place like this. All in all the Nigiri was on par with Safeway, even worse in some cases. Even the ginger was nearly shredded unlike the thick savory pieces I would expect from a restaurant with their prices, I did not try any of their rolls. i love sushi because I love fish and sea food and nearly all their rolls have spicy mayo, serrano peppers, or sriracha sauce. I am not sure but this is unlike any "traditional Japanese cuisine" I have experienced in my 20 year relationship with Sushi. I haven't made it to Japan yet, but from my hometown of Santa Cruz, to San Francisco, Honolulu, K-town Germany and even Kuwait City, I have never seen Sriracha and Serrano on a sushi menu. So I cannot say for sure it is not "traditional Japanese cuisine", but it is different from what I have seen before. My point being if the fish is good why smother it in peppers, may as well eat avocado. Explain to me how a Jalapeno Peach Martini fits into a "traditional Japanese cuisine". Have I made my point? I would venture to say Japanese / Mexican Fusion Sushi, which is great if that is your taste. 36$ with just water is not bad for a quality sushi meal, except the quality sucked! and I left hungry and did not order anything "special". I would suggest you find another place or just walk across the street to Safeway, at least you won't have to share that with the ants.
(1)Madeleine L.
Sashimi and sushi were not the freshest . . . you could see how the ahi was discolored around the edges. The salad dressing wasn't very good either, left you wishing it was the traditional miso dressing you find in most Japanese restaurants. Service was attentive, but the food took a really long time, and it wasn't even busy. If I got back I'd try something cooked and get a cocktail to wash it down. Their beverage menu did look pretty enticing.
(2)Debra G.
Horrible service, it took forever to get our food and when we did get it everything was cold. We never received our soup that was suppose to come with our meal. Our check was brought out promptly with a added charge of California roll which was to be included with our meal, when I brought this charge to our servers attention and also told her that we also never received the soup, she said that she will take the charge of the hot tea off of our bill in place of the soup we didn't receive. I have never heard of a Japanese restaurant charging for hot tea which was not hot by the way!
(1)Rylee L.
Absolutely my favorite! Great atmosphere cute venue. Jalapeño peach martinis are a must have!
(5)Sedition K.
This is my first negative Yelp rating. I feel so snooty. But I think it's appropriate here. I can't imagine wanting to go back, and I feel like the two-star description "Meh. I've experienced better" is too positive. There are plenty of places that are "meh", mediocre, not bad, good sometimes. This was really poor quality, and not that cheap either. Went here for lunch. I applied my usual filter, mentally scratching out all the rolls with: (1) Deep fried stuff (2) Cream cheese (3) Crab salad (4) Spicy mayo/hot sauce/whatever And there was very little left. Their default "sake maki" is smoked salmon, which I found weird. I ordered sake nigiri and a tekka maki. Nigiri: The fish was quite good. Tekka Maki: This was not red tuna. This was like negi-toro: pureed/minced/whatever white tuna. Which is fine, but it's just weird calling that tekka maki. Rice: The rice was too mushy, both on the nigiri and on the roll. It's got lovely decor and a bunch of really interesting-looking drinks. They just need a new sushi chef or a new rice making procedure.
(1)Charlene L.
This used to be my favorite place for sushi in Chico. I liked it much better when they were located over by the old mall. They've tried to transform in that "hip" city Japanese restaurant. It didn't work for them. They've lost their unique touch. And their menu changed. It's not a bad place, but I've become loyal to Ojiya.
(2)Jiok S.
This four star is strickly based on their happy hour as I have yet to try their dishes. I like their happy hour because sushi is a great price and you can get a beer plus saki for $5! Their little outside patio is cute too if you dont mind watching Vallombrosia traffic. Happy hour...definitely worth price!
(4)Alexandra B.
We ordered for take out, waitress was really nice but food was awful. I'm a huge fan of sushi but it had no taste, the tempura was not cooked all the way and the spider roll shrimp was all shell and tail. I was very disappointed with how bad it tasted and low quality of food there was.
(1)Jennifer H.
This was my 1st time here since they moved to Mangrove and I had a great experience!! I tried their jalapeno peach martini which was delish!! Sweetness with a kick! For food I ordered the Devon roll and the spicy shrooms. I was very impressed! They were both VERY tasty and reasonably priced. Our waitress was diligent and nice. I will definitely be returning here on a regular basis. Looking forward to trying more of their rolls!
(5)deborah a.
Excellent Choo Choo, Mike 1, Ben 10 for Deb and Steve aka LSD. Hee. Gregg helped this great experience. High Recommendation. We will go back for Sushi Sureee.
(4)Jim N.
Gen Kai used to be the only show in town for sushi. We went all the time when it was in the Almond Orchard. Now, don't waste your time and money. The service is poor and more important, the fish is not great. Plus, the selection of sashimi is minimal compared to some other sushi spots in town. Ashley, the owner, has let this place become second rate, I am sorry to say.
(2)Jeannie T.
As a vegan, I found Gen Kai to be great because it offers unusual (at least for Chico) vegan sushi rolls, such as mountain carrot (a crunchy pickled carrot), oshinko (a type of aged, pickled daikon), kanpyo (sweetened gourd strips--it tastes better than it sounds), and a nice veggie garden roll, which has all of the aforementioned items, plus lettuce. It offers edamame for appetizers, which is a nice (albeit ubiquitous) vegan choice. Our server was knowledgeable about what was vegan and what was not vegan, which is refreshing. The miso soup has a bonito (tuna) dashi base, the tempura batter is made with egg, and the noodles for the vegetable yakisoba also has eggs in it, the udon noodle soup has eggs in the noodles and also in the broth. Our server recommended the vegetable sukiyaki, which is made with rice noodles and what she said was a vegan teriyaki sauce. I did not try this dish, as I find most teriyaki sauces to be cloyingly sweet, so you're on your own there. The teriyaki veggies can also be served over rice, of course. The place is clean and does not smell fishy. We did not sit at the sushi bar, though.
(3)Alyssa L.
A little overpriced but SO damn tasty. They do have a happy hour with some of the best food and drink specialties, which makes it affordable and you still get to try the good stuff. Really good, creative cocktails and mixed drinks too.
(4)Melanie E.
Their sushi is delicious! There portions are a little bit smaller than most sushi restaurants, but the food is really fresh and yummy.
(4)Diane S.
Yay for classy Japanese places. Place was darn good, but really far from campus. By the movies. Bring a hot date here and then go to the movies. Food is really good for japanese food in chico. Moderate prices I got tempura.
(3)tony r.
Ok, I'm not going to attempt to convince anyone this is the best sushi ever but in Chico, for me it's the prefered choice. The quality of the fish is good, or was last night, and the service was provided with spunk and a smile. I had majuro, unagi, hamachi, fresh sake and a couple speciality rolls, all of which were good, with th majuro being the tastiest. The value has diminished slightly since they no longer offer the all you can eat menu which used to be about $30. Regardless, it's a great place for a meal when compared to other similar restaurants.
(4)Jamie B.
I hadn't been to Gen Kai since they moved from the Pillsbury Road location by the mall. I had to look up where they moved to and saw the reviews here which worried me since there were quite a few negative ones. We went and had a number of different nigiri and a couple of rolls and they were all very good to excellent. I wasn't quite full so I asked one of the chefs to make me a surprise roll. It was probably the best roll I've ever had. The service was attentive and friendly, the prices were very reasonable and we had a great time. We'll definitely be back. So why all the negative reviews? Looking at the recent ones, they go from 4/5 stars to 1 star with almost no 2/3. I'm guessing that there are different shifts/personnel on different days and there's at least one that's not doing a good job. We were there on a weekend night (I think Sunday, 12/30). If this is the case, I hope the management resolves the problem since they can be an excellent restaurant if they do.

I've been to Gen Kai a number of times and my expirences have always been pleasant. The wait staff is always polite to me and often let me choose were I sit, I prefer the section of traditional japanese style seating. The last time I went I ordered the "Fat Albert' roll which was a bit pricier because it was one of their specialty rolls, but its a larger roll so its worth the price. It was flavorful and filling, two things I look for in sushi. I'm also a fan of their Unagi roll, the sauce on that is truly amazing. Their cocktails are really good too! I ordered a fuji appletini and was to die for. The miso soup is pretty good as well and cheap for only 1$. I really believe that Gen Kai is the best sushi place in chico. You might have to pay a bit more for your meal than at Annies, but its so worth it.

The Rolls are Tiny and over priced. One of my rolls was just tasteless and it had salmon and lemon on it. This used to be my favorite place before they moved and i keep trying to come back but they changed and not in a good way. any flavor you get is masked by a bunch of sauce. There are plenty of places in Chico with better sushi.

Best spicy tuna roll! I mean the best!!!! Service is great and they always are willing to take requests :D
(5)Alicia P.
Every time I come to Gen Kai, I love it! The rolls are perfectly sized (compared to other sushi places in town) and always come fresh. My favorite roll is the spicy tanner, but I haven't had a dud yet. Their service is best when you get the tall waitress, I wish I knew her name, but all the other waitresses are short, so process of elimination. They have tables, sushi bar, or party seating. Best of all, my girlfriend and I always order the spicy tanner, fat Albert, spicy tuna roll, miso, and 2 sodas, which after tax and tip is just under $40. That's a great dinner without going overboard. For that price, it's easy to squeeze sushi into any budget, without sacrificing quality. 5 Stars to Gen Kai.
(5)Alex M.
Ah! Skinny tiny rolls, very plain. After ordering a few varieties of rolls and being dissatisfied we finally ordered a california roll thinking how they could bounce back... not so much.

I wonder what has happened to Genkai between my last visit and now, because the quality of the food has gone downhill quite a bit. I got a special roll (the...Vance? something like that), which was crab and spring onion fried tempura style. I asked to have avocado and spicy mayo added, which the waitress said was no problem. Well, when it came out, it smelled fishy, the tempura outside was mushy, and they were incredibly stingy on the avocado. It was literally a small sliver. The thinnest piece of avocado they could get away with; pretty disappointing. They also gave me an entire bowl of spicy mayo. I mean, I like spicy mayo but I didn't need THAT much of it. What happened to the drizzling of it on top? I used to love getting rolls like this here, because they always came out crispy and delicious. What happened? I also ordered a side of vegetable tempura. It came out hot, but the outside coating was super soggy. How do you screw up tempura?! Our waitress was nice and attentive, but the food sucked. I don't see myself coming back to Genkai for a very long time.
(2)Patrick W.
Small rolls, service was plesant but slow. Overall I will not be going here again, I was not impressed with the tast, or the $10 scorpion drink I purchased that tasted like water mixed with a hint of OJ.
(2)Bruce D.
Don't waste your time or money. I ordered the vegetable tempura and cucumber roll lunch combo. Super slow service, it took 20 minutes. The cucumber roll was tiny and had no cucumber, just rice and avocado. The tempura was just one big blob, and to top it all off the miso soup had no flavor. Overall it was a very disappointing experience.

I had been to Gen Kai before, at its old location, and I loved it. But I was being treated there before, and I wasn't sure that I would be able to afford the sushi on my own. I was wary of going to the restaurant at its new location and under its new management because many people have told me that the portions are small and the prices are high. My friend really wanted to go, so I decided to take a risk and try it out. We went in at lunch on Tuesday, and the restaurant was...empty. But at least that means we got to be seated right away. Three more people came in after us. It was kind of weird to be in a mostly empty restaurant, but I guess it's better than being in a crowded, noisy restaurant. The waitress checked on us and refilled our water often. My friend ordered two vegetarian rolls (she loves Gen Kai for their vegetarian and vegan choices), and I ordered a California Roll Inside-Out with Tobiko and a specialty roll: Jaime. I was a little disappointed when the waitress asked if we would like any appetizers or miso soup because that meant that the miso soup wasn't free. Every other sushi restaurant I have been to gives a bowl of miso soup even if you're just order a roll. But oh well. When the rolls got to our table, I was very pleased. The California was nice and cold, and the Jaime was very hot. They were both packed with fish, which was great. And I have to say that I LOVE the texture of the tobiko at Gen Kai. Both rolls were delicious, and of course my friend enjoyed hers too. The portions seemed about right. If I can recall correctly, it was about eight pieces per roll on my plate. It filled me up, so that's a good sign. The bill on my end was a bit more than I usually pay, but I felt that the portions were average (not small), and the rolls were fresh and delicious, so I was happy. I don't know if I would have had a different experience during dinner hours, but I was happy with what I got this time around.

I have loved Gen Kai for years. I use to frequent them when they were in the almond orchard shopping center. The happy hour specials were awesome. I commonly order the Sarah roll and the Goldilocks roll. They have an appetizer with like 8 rolls for $16. Goes great with a large Sapporo and good conversation.

Sushi is one of my favorite foods to eat despite the typical high prices that are usually involved when eating at a sushi restaurant. I went to this sushi restaurant with a reasonable size group of people for a party and it took around 2 hours to get our food. Not only did the rolls look completely different then what was advertised on the pictures they were too small to even begin to feel full. I was not satisfied by the end of the meal and wound up going home and making myself another meal to feel satisfied. I will never go here again.

I have a wonderful story for this restaurant! But before I elaborate, take note that the address for this restaurant has changed! It's now on Mangrove! 605 Mangrove Ave Suite 180/190. I made a reservation here for myself and 9 of my friends/boyfriends' friends. It was for a surprise birthday party for my boyfriend. I explained the situation to the staff when I made the reservation and they were very accommodating to my wishes. I asked them if they would seat my friends before I got there and they did. My boyfriend was very excited once he realized where his surprise was! The food was great and all of his friends seemed quite pleased with everything we ordered. It was pricey, but well worth it! Major props go out to the staff of Gen Kai for being so flexible with my surprise birthday dinner and for just being wonder to us all in general. Our waitress even brought out green tea ice cream with a candle on it for my boyfriend! Everyone there was great! I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes sushi or wants to have a group dinner. Just make your reservation in advance and you'll be well taken care of.

I used to swear by Gen Kai, but over the past year the quality of their food has diminished. It's really hit or miss, but when you can't even attempt to eat your sushi because it's falling apart... it's disappointing. Especially when your paying $12.95 to $14.95 a roll. Recently, the few times we've gone we have had to wait over 45 minutes for ONE roll and the service has been terrible. We concluded after our last visit last night, that we won't go back. Our rolls were drenched in sauce and mayo which we asked be left off, falling apart, and the wait was ridiculous. Sadly, we were one couple out of the handful of people there at that time. For what we paid we can get at Japanese Blossom for $20 less and the fish is fresh, service is good and the prices are extremely reasonable for the quantity.

I've only been here on one Saturday night, but I must respectfully disagree with all the other reviewers-- the place does not serve passable sushi. The quality here is on par with most multi-cultural-denominational Asian buffets. I ordered the sashimi (replacing tuna with salmon) and even in the dark (yes, it's dark in here), I could tell that the fish looked odd. When I put it in my mouth, I immediately knew something was wrong-- it had a strange firm texture as if it had been cooked, like a ceviche. When I asked the waittress about this, she replied that maybe it was due to the "vinegar rinse" that the cooks used. What? Vinegar? Rinse? I was actually tempted to go and talk to the chef, but wasting any more time in there didn't make any sense. *Note*- If you can't tell, I'm a picky MFer when it comes to sushi/sashimi... I can spot freshness, but I'm also not above them Asian Super Buffets (once a year)... Prices are reasonable if you consider that they're typically for ONE item at a time. I tried my companion's food, and again, it was only slightly above the quality of Asian fast food or the various Super Asian Buffets. I felt sorry for the large pack of high school kids leaving at the same time we did-- they blew a lot of money on what they probably thought was a good meal, trying to impress their dates... The Lowdown: Food: 1- Vinegar rise. Forget this place, run far, far away... go downtown to the Rawbar, which is still not great sushi but at least passable in Chico. Staff 2- Attentive, but who you trying to trick?
(1)Brian K.
Fantastic, new location....mediocre sushi and sub par service. Probably won't be back anytime soon!
(2)Nicole T.
I give Gen Kai two stars only because they're previous location by Trader Joe's was an actual treat to go to, but their new one really deserves one star. The experience I had at their new location off Mangrove was not pleasant. It was my roommate's birthday and the restaurant had just opened so we thought it would be fun to try it out. Boy were we wrong. The service was so slow that it took an hour and a half to get our food, meanwhile all of the guests had been drinking, and being drunk and hungry is not a good combination. When we finally got our food, the portions were tiny. I'm thankful that I ordered two rolls, because one would have been a joke. I ordered the Philadelphia roll (tiny, tiny, tiny) and a Caterpillar roll (which was a moderate size). By the end of the night, everyone was still hungry, sobering up, and just plain cranky. I'm a HUGE fan of sushi, and I'm really sad to see what used to be a great restaurant, go downhill.

I haven't been to this place in awhile, but I used to go all the time. I really liked the dynamite roll, and enjoyed sitting at the sushi bar. Unfortunately, on my last visit, I was with a large party. We had made resos for the large table on the left side of the restaurant, but unfortunately, only half of the party showed up. Unfortunate, but there wasn't much I could do. Anyway--we weren't asked our order until about 30 mintues after we had gotten there; not even for appetizers! Our waters were filled once during our 2 hour stay (which, I might add, was not due to our eating, but rather it took the server way too long to get our check to us.) We came hungry, remained hungry(never got a chance to order again), and left hungry. That was the last time I went to Gen Kai. Last I heard, they were under new ownership. I personally feel service/food was better before the change-over. Lastly(Warning: this is a *rant*), to the people complaining about the price of sushi: 1. It's fish. Seafood is expensive. Don't get surised if it's costly--anywhere, EVER (unless it's buffet, but that's risky--see #2). 2. Do you honestly want "cheap" fish?? I mean, you are eating it raw for goodness sakes. I would think quality over quantity/price might mean something. 3. If you want something cheap for the kiddos, order off a kids menu or get Wendy's. It's right downt the street. Or, try your luck with Safeway sushi.

My BF and I frequent this Japanese restaurant. We have quite the appetite for Sushi and living so far from home (San Francisco), we often have sushi cravings. I will be honest. Even Gen Kai sushi does not compare to the fresh sushi made by authentic Japanese Sushi chefs back home, but for Chico it is the best you're going to get and for that I give it a 4-star rating. C'mon! Chico is so far inland I was surprised there was any kind if fish being served here. Japanese Blossom is great as well. Their owner/sushi chef used to work at Gen Kai and is a very, very skilled chef.
(4)Lisa R.
Yes, the food here is kind of pricey... DUH!!! It's sushi. What did you expect??? Anyhow, the Presely roll and the Alaskan roll are delicious!! Service is good and the bar is stocked ;)
(4)Josh G.
Soooooooooooooo good the only place to get sushi in Chico. I see people saying it's to expensive but go to the raw bar and look at those prices. I had my rehearsal dinner there and the staff was great ( even though we had some very picky people ) the food was great and the new place looks fantastic! I highly recommend gen ki to any sushi lover.
(5)Chantel Y.
Yummy yum time. This place is bomb. Friendly chefs, willing to create anything for you. Awesome specialty rolls and tons of them. Delicious! They also have a full bar, and plenty of space, with myriad seating options so you can usually have whatever experience you want. Delicious seafood, amazing sushi with all the bells and whistles and a huge selection. Great waitstaff. Try the Spicy Tanner! It's my absolute favorite! Followed closely by the Fat Albert and their spicy tuna roll. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
(5)Merrit F.
I was a bit cautious about trying this place, but I'm glad I did. Japanese Blossoms was my sushi go-to spot in Chico, but I may have found a new one. We were one of three tables occupied, but I think word just hasn't gotten out. The service was great, but the food was the greatest. The Jamie Roll is delicious, as are the less expensive Spicy Tuna and Unagi and Avocado Rolls. Good cocktails as well, we will definitely be going back.
(5)Bryn Y.
I should've listened to other reviewers. The only reason why I justify giving it a 1 is because the waitress was sweet and took off my disgusting roll (like she should have). I'm a big lover of sushi and this was unedible. I got mango on my roll as well and it wasn't even the color of mango (and I was sitting at the bar and saw fresh looking mango, but that's def not what was on my roll). I dont want to take much more time to review this, I just know I will never ever be back and now I'm just praying I don't get sick from it. I could barely stomach half my roll!
(1)Taylor G.
Genkai is one of the best places for sushi in Chico. The staff is really great and helpful, the fish is fresh and delicious. When you go, ask for the picture books, they have some amazing rolls in those. The drinks are good and strong. A great place for a little romantic dinner or a larger party, just make sure to let them know you are coming! They will make you feel like family!
(5)Robert S.
I have eatin at all sushi restaurants in Chico and by far this is the best sushi in town. I would give it five stars but can't due to only sushi bars located next to the ocean is the ultimate best due to the freshest fish possible. The sushi rolls are excellent. This place has a picture book that shows you specialty rolls. I recommend this place to anyone that likes sushi. They also serve dishes that aren't sushi related for those that don like sushi. Remeber that if you haven't tried sushi then don't knock it until you try it.

I went to this restaurant 2 year ago, and was very disappointed it was about the quality of Katsu's, which no longer exists, but at the time was a much cheaper sushi joint that was closer to my house. Needless to say I didn't go for a couple of years after my initial visit, but I returned for a friends birthday and was blown away. This is a good sushi joint now. I wanted to write this because Gen Kai is getting no love, but many of the negative reviews are old, or complaining about not getting service when your whole party isn't there (that's what they're supposed to do! Wait until everyone is there and then take your order) and had I reviewed it 2 years ago upon my initial visit I would've ragged on it too. But I went about 6 months ago, and I've gone 4 or 5 times since then and it was awesome, and fairly reasonably priced compared to Rawbar, and Japanese Blossom. The sushi bar is fun, and there are a ton of very creative and delicious specialty rolls, and the fish is fresh, which didn't used to be the case. I think with the increase in sushi restaurants fresh fish has become easier to get. Even if you went there a while back and thought it sucked, try it again. I'm giving this a 5 star only because it needs the help on its overall rating. As sushi goes in general this is about a 4, and other restaurants in town might be better, but this really good sushi for better prices.
(5)Milan R.
Great food cool setting. I have never had a bad meal here. Service is very good, as well as a great bar. The miso soup is really tasty.
(4)Minnie L.
Probably the best Japanese food this little town is ever going to get. The prices are set reasonably, and the sushis are great! We always go to Gen Kai whenever we crave Japanese food. I love the traditional decorations and the window life like food displays. The green tea ice cream is delicious!
(4)Maddie W.
Good fresh sushi. They have the best seaweed salad. Great atmosphere. Tasty specialty drinks. Somewhat pricy but not even close to Rawbar. Great place.
(3)Rachelle R.
I used to love Gen Kai until my most recent experience there. While sitting at the sushi bar, a small cockroach ran across the counter and down onto my menu beofre the sushi chef noticed and scooped it up with his towel and replied "That's why were moving to a new location." Gross!! We didn't have the nerve to leave, so we stayed to eat and it got even worse. The rolls fell apart, the miso soup tasted bad and they didn't give us any free sushi or comp us any part of our meal for the cockroach experience. NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN!!!
(1)Britt C.
First of all this restaurant has moved to Mangrove and Vallambrosa. We went on opening weekend and I guess they overbooked and had far too many large parties. We agreed to wait for an hour for a table for six, and finally sat down about 2 hours later. Our food didn't come for another hour. The only real problem I have with this place is that the customer doesn't come first. When we asked how long our food would be and what was going on they said to bear with them because it was opening night. They also agreed to comp some of our food, but it never showed up on the ticket. It's just disappointing to spend $200 on a meal and drinks for two and then have to leave upset. Maybe the service will improve, but the sushi wasn't good enough to have to deal with it in the near future.
(1)Edmund G.
My wife and I tried this place out for the first time. Pretty dissapointing. The tuna rolls are TINY! They taste okay and might make a good appetizer, but come on! They were about an inch and a half in diameter. My wife had the vegetable roll which was equally small. These 3 small rolls came to $20! Ridiculous. 2 stars for very small portions. This is a college town folks! Either increase your portions or lower your prices.
(2)Nosniv X.
Best Japanese restaurant in chico. If you must have some sushi in chico this is your best bet. This is a good place to take a date if you want to appear cultured.
(3)Kathleen V.
I recently went came here with a group of friends. I ordered their caterpillar roll and I was not a big of it. It was super small and plain. I was expecting it to be much more flavorful. I also had their lemonade, which I actually really like! I liked how it was had refills.
(3)Rayne V.
My new favorite sushi place! Everyone working there is super nice and the place is clean! No joke. And I love the "Jamie roll" (at least that's how I think it is spelled) thanks to my gf. Whenever I think about sushi I think about this place. Definitely recommending this place to anyone who like me, loves sushi. I'm glad I tried this place out.
(5)Tyler A.
Came in on a Sunday evening and sat at the bar and was one of maybe 3 patrons in the restaurant. The service was slow given the crowd. The sushi came out at room temperature, which made me question how the fish was stored. The edamame was salted prior to being delivered and it being salted was never mentioned on the menu. When it came time to settle the bill it took 20 minutes to receive my change, granted I paid with a $100 bill. All in all, I won't be returning next time I'm in Chico.
(2)Vincent V.
Sushi isn't that extraordinary, but at least it's edible and doesn't taste bad. They have their happy hours, which is great for some lunch with friends. The atmosphere is rather friendly, the service is not bad, and I like being away from the clustered student crowd (not that students don't come here, there's just less students plaguing the streets).
(3)O S.
Meh. So I went there today. First off, the waitress didn't even tell us about happy hour, so we ended up paying 30$ for two small rolls that were good but not great. I might come back but I'll definitely be using happy hour to my advantage next time. Other than that, service was good, but you should always tell your customers about happy hour/specials.
(3)Chase H.
The food here was horrible. I asked for the tuna on top of the roll to be torched and I received a roll that tasted VERY strongly of propane gas. It was as if they turned on the torches gas and held it directly on the roll for a few seconds before starting the flame. It even reeked of propane from about a foot away when you would smell it. I asked the waiter about it and she tried to just tell me that that's how torched rolls come out, but I've had them at many other restaurants and that has never been the case. They replaced my roll after some confrontation and I made sure to get it not torched this time to avoid any problems. It came covered in mayo and that was about all I could taste in the roll. This will be the last time I bring a group here a the food decreases in quality each time. The only positive part was that they did replace the roll for me.. Very disappointed.

As a family we decided to go for my brother's birthday. We arrive around 6:30 for a group of 4. There were about four other small groups seated when we arrived. There was one "hostess/waitress" who was arranging the take-out for people, those whom had arrived after us. She also proceeded to keep going into the back, completely avoiding us all together. Finally after approximately 15 minutes she seated us. It then took another 15 minutes for a different "hostess/waitress" to come and take our drink order. By that time we had already decided what food as well as drinks we had wanted to order. She was very distracted and came across as very rude. 20 minutes later our food arrived. We ordered four rolls and some edamame. The only thing remotely edible was the edamame. The sushi came slopped on the plates as if it was a school cafeteria meal. In addition to the horrible presentation the rice used to make the sushi was JASMINE RICE, not even SUSHI RICE. It fell apart immediately when you tried to grab it. We barely ate anything, paid and left. Never to return again. The worst sushi we have ever had.
(1)Rachael C.
I just got back from eating at this sushi bar and I will defiantly be returning. My friend and I were seated right away and were given options on where we wanted to sit. Not only did we order a variety of food, sushi and non sushi items, our food didn't take long to get to us at all considering it's a Friday night. The food was amazing! The sushi wasn't over powers by sauces and I being a person who likes cooked sushi rather than entirely raw sushi, I found so many cooked options! They also have noodles, tempura, and other things to accommodate non sushi lovers. The rolls were huge for the prices they offered, I've been to other sushi places around Chico and they defiantly give you more for your money. The main reason why I gave them 5 stars is because our waitress was awesome! She was so prompt with even the smallest things like water and when we packed up to leave she gave us fresh wasabi and chopsticks to go without even asking her for them. I wasn't able to try and alcoholic drinks there but others around the restaurant seemed to be enjoying themselves as well. Check this place out!
(5)Lanaya C.
This is my go to place for any occasion friendly atmosphere love the people and the food is wonderful. I love sitting at the sushi bar and just watching all the great creations they make the great way to get ideas on what to order next
(5)John M.
I ordered the chirashi sushi. This bowl comes in a variety of fish on a bowl of rice. Born and raised in Japan, and having to eat many chirashi sushi in Japan and in the states, I have to say, it was one of the worst chirashi sushi I have ever eaten. The fish were all cheap, and not fresh, and salmon was smoked, wtf? the other fish in there was of cheap quality and tasted pretty bad, they also either cut it terribly or that they took some pieces that was tossed aside, in addition the pieces were took thickly cut, and not even cut like a professional would, more like an amateur would have. They put in the smaller fish roe, not the expensive bigger fish roe, which is the first time I have ever seen it done on a chirashi, and such dish in Japan would be laughed at, so all the small fish roe were scattered in the bowl, slightly not enough rice and they were buried deep underneath the lettuce and it was hard to get to, and too many lettuce and cucumber in the bowl, which I ended up discarding. The rolls that people find are tasty is because they masked the cheap, barely fresh fish with the heavy sauce they put on top and the baking they have done on some of the rolls. I find this place extremely offensive to Japanese culture, and gives the Japanese people a bad image of what Japanese cuisine is all about. Authentic Japanese Sushi Restaurants do not do it like this, and certainly do not try to use the cheapest products. Never going back. THIS IS A DISGRACE TO THE JAPANESE PEOPLE, and we wouldn't associate such restaurant with us.

Made a reservation for Saturday night at 5:30pm for a group of 15. There were 3 other tables with people in the restaurant when we arrived. It was obvious that the waitress wanted to anywhere that day but serving us. It took over 20 minutes to get out drinks. We were less than 20' from the bar and they sat there waiting for her to bring them to us for over 10 minutes. I was trying to play it cool and not make a scene but I almost lost it. Our waitress has either never done this before in her life or is burned out from doing it her entire life and needs to retire. The rest of the night pretty much went as to be expected. A third of the food we ordered didn't show up. We ordered 2 plates of calamari for the kids as their main course. l literally asked her 4 times when it would be out and she said they're still working on it. It took over an hour from when we ordered the calamari until it made it to their table. By then they were all full from eating my edamame, salad and miso soup. The worst part about this entire night and my review is that the sushi wasn't good.... it was great. All of the food that we actually did get was really good. They have a lot of unique rolls I haven't seen before and they were all delicious. We received our receipt at 7:30. We were there for 2 hours. When you walk into an empty restaurant and are seated imediatly and are litteraly 20' from the bar and 15' from the sushi station and it takes 2 hours to get your drinks and food you've got to think that there's a real disconnect between the staff that's transferring the order/food from the table. I'm sad to say but this is my first and last time here. On our next $475 sushi dinner we'll be heading somewhere else.
(1)Zac L.
Good service. Sushi was fair. They were quick but there weren't many people in the place. I don't know if I would come back since there are better places in Chico to get sushi.
