Love Daily News. It's great for a weekend brunch, but always busy, so be prepared to wait a little bit (especially in good weather). I've been there quite a few times and each time I've tried something new. Loved every dish I've had, boyfriend loved every dish he's had. Service has always been good. Good Eats: Eggs Benedict (with bacon, no ham), Biscuits and Gravy, French Dip and Clam Chowder Lunch Special, Hot Chocolate, Cinnamon Apple Crepes, Seafood Crepe Call me crazy, but I like a little OJ with my mimosa. Only minor complaint.

Delicious! Happy with the food every time we come here. I love that they make the hash browns extra crispy the way I like. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is great.

Great breakfast place, nice coffee for brewed coffee. Server was attentive, but service slow when busy. Price was about right for the food.

The only thing good about this place was the service and outside seating. We had the Santa Fe chicken. The chicken was dried out like a piece of wood and tasteless. We also had the California Club which was dry as well. The best part was the service but don't think will be going back.

Say whaaaaaat ??? This place only has 3 star rating??? There MUST be something wrong with all this people that rate this place so low. I have had breakfast at MANY MANY other places, and let me tell you something, this little place here in Carlsbad is one of THE BEST places i have had breakfast. The food here i have found it to be very very high quality and fresh. I have tried a couple of different breakfast dishes and i can taste the quality. The hash browns is one example. I haven't had hash browns this fresh and non greasy in any other place than here at Daily News Cafe. I just love the flavor and texture of it. The hash browns are PERFECT. I live in the City of Pasadena, CA, so because i live so far i haven't had the chance to try ALL their dishes, but i have had around four different breakfast dishes since i found this place in Carlsbad on my way to San Diego during my family's weekend get away trips. One of my favorites is the Eggs Benedict. Another dish i have had is the Mount Olympus omelette and The California. I was here this last Saturday on my way to San Diego. I guess it depends WHO ends up being your waitress/waiter, and i guess people's attitude and service varies from time to time, specially depending at what time you go eat at ANY place. On the weekend After 10 AM expect to wait at least 30 minutes to one hr. But the food here is great! I recommend it.

Had a groupon deal and figured I would try the place while in town. I was impressed with the menu, lots of choices and the food was good. I always ask for egg white omelette's only if it's fresh from the egg and not out of a carton. I was disappointment that they didn't do it fresh. Portion sizes are very big...you will walk away feeling full and probably even skipping a meal. Outdoor seating is great on a nice or even overcast day. Service lacked a little, but they were busy due to a race taking place that same morning. I would go back, but will probably try some other spots in the area first before returning.

Good food and service. Reasonable price. Just get rid of the flies at the patio

For such amazing food the service is beyond poor. The people who work here also look so grungy. Dirty clothes, nails, long scraggly hair, and did not match. They need to hire all over again. Such a shame they have such bad service for such great food. Like I said, though, the food is incredible. I recommend the Eggs Benedict and the chili before anything! If you're in no hurry and not a clean freak, try it out.

Came here with my family. I have been excited about coming here for years. It always looked so cute and their menu looked great. The potatoes were not cooked all the way and had little flavor. My mom's omelet was over cooked and crusty brown. She said she only ate it because she was hungry. My step dad's mushroom burger was over cooked with almost no mushrooms. I hate to say it but I was sorely disappointed.

  • Evan B.

Coffee was good and their cinnamon roll was delicious. I had the California Omelet which wasn't the best omelet I've ever had, but the ingredients were fresh and tasty.

Place was nice, comfortable setting...very good food and great customer service...would recommend for lunch

If nothing else, come for the cinnamon bun! I got an omelette, tomato, jalapeno and cheddar. The omelette was heavy, so if you like that style, then you will love this place. Have to say the english muffin was toasted perfectly. With all the other choices in town, this is definitely not worth the wait. Walk further into the village and you will not be disappointed.

We recently visited Carlsbad for the first time and had breakfast twice with relatives staying at the Carlsbad Inn and Beach Resort. We did take out one morning and ate in the 2nd. Both times the food was good and the service was excellent. For take out, the service was quick and we were able to eat while the food was still warm. The inside service the following morning was good. Our waitress was helpful and attentive and the food plentiful and satisfying. We sat outside which was quite pleasant. i would recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a good breakfast.

Food was ok. But I'm just happy to come out of this place alive. Idiots turned one of the heaters on behind me and left the gas running. Then 20 minutes later tried to start it. Damn thing almost blew up. Loudest "bang" directly behind my head you could imagine. Barely an apology from staff.

  • Sarah-beth S.

Awesome location, unimpressive food, sub par service. The only reason this place is so crowded is because of the primo location. Everything else is blah. With the location they could do so much more.

  • Mike Z.

We're not foodies, but like good food at all levels. It feels old in the sense that it's a bit worn. I had a Greek Omelet that should have been called a Greek Scramble..with fairly mild Feta and, of all things, black olives, with minimal spinach. My girlfriend had a side order of biscuits and gravy...the gravy was not edible and truly looked regurgitated. We sent it back. She was definitely underwhelmed with the rest... the breakfast, thank you. Even though the place had business, they were not overwhelmed but the service was a negative experience with a lack of care. If you're really hungry and need to eat...okay and stick to the basics, but otherwise, find another place.

Delicious food...outdoor seating for you, and your four-legged family members... Service could be a tad bit better.. I recommend this Cafe..just get there EARLY (Before 9:00 AM)... Otherwise, your waiting...

Breakfast of omelots, waffles, french toast and eggs over 3 days was generous and delicious. The coffee was rich and bold and hot. Great for first thing in the morning. Conveniently located right outside the Carlsbad inn beach resort.

  • Kyle L.

The food left much to be desired. We had the soup and salad, and a chicken salad sandwich with fries. The bread on the sandwich was very dry, and simply not the quality of bread you would expect. The chicken salad appeared to have a lot of mayo and lacking any flavors other than dill. The salad was a bowl full of lettuce and a few cucumbers - boring. The homemade clam chowder was very thin and not as good as a can cambpell's chowder would have been. The outdoor patio is the best thing this place has going for it. Won't be back.

Had lunch here a few weeks back with my sweetheart and her mother. Nice setting, busy, but friendly helpful staff. Menu is vast and really can do the items any way you'd like. Parking is a challenge like any where in the Village.

This by far is the BEST place to eat breakfast in Carlsbad. We eat here every day every time we stay in Carlsbad. Food is GREAT, service is GREAT!

We stayed at the Carlsbad Inn and Beach Resort and so this was our local breakfast place. The breakfast food is VERY good. I had the cinnamon french toast, oatmeal and ham and cheese omelette and they were all very good. We brought our 14 month old for breakfast each time and they had high chairs and had a nice kids menu. Very good service. I really enjoyed the soy vanilla lattes as well. We were there in January but they had heaters outside so you could still enjoy the patio seating. Very cool place!

This place was conveniently located next to our hotel so we decided to give it a try for breakfast. OMG! The cinnamon bread french toast was delicious as was the special pecan-flavored coffee and everything else we ordered. Portions are quite generous. My boys insisted we have breakfast there the next morning as well and I didn't mind a bit! Our server was Stephen the first time and he was attentive and professional. The next day's server was Deena and she was ok. This restaurant gets very busy at breakfast time but we didn't wait too long either time.

I came here for breakfast and for lunch the next day. We had free meal coupons from our timeshare so that's why we went. Breakfast: I had e\Eggs Benedict with fruit.. it was just ok. Our server was a sweetheart. We sat outside and I agree, the location is great. Lunch: My whole family went b/c we all had free meal coupons. BAD BAD BAD. Our dishes were as followed; Lobster sandwich, french dip sandwich, club sandwich, and chicken strips for my niece. Lobster sandwich and french dip looked untouched b/c the taste was unbearable, club sandwich was ok (how can anyone mess that up).. so we ended up eating our niece's leftovers. To make our lunch experience worse I noticed the unfriendly manager or owner. We were sitting inside and I watched a salesman come in trying to sell something. The manager/owner had a look of disguise the whole time he was speaking w/him. Before the salesman could even walk out the door the manager/owner turned to a female employee and said "Do me a favor and get an education.. you don't want to turn out like THAT guy!" Then he went on putting him down and how he dressed. I was so glad they did not take any of our money & it was all free. My opinion, if you are going to be a snob please do it behind closed doors when you run an establishment. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

WOW! Judging from the grammer of the neg reviews I'm thinking these people don't use english as their first language or they're all just weird. But I digress...this place is a super casual beach DINER. What are y'all expecting...Spago??? We've eaten here twice. Both times were pleasant experiences. Nothing uber fantastic but nice lunchtime meals at a local, beach coffee house/diner. The first time we came, my wife had the club sammy which was fine. I had the chunky chicken salad sammy on soudough. It was good but wished I'd asked for the bread to be toasted. Second time here she had the lobster sam which was good and I asked for the chunky chicksalsam again but toasted. YUM! You're at the beach, you're kickin' it with a beer and sammy...how could you whine??? Good place for a quick bite

Went there on a busy day and our breakfast took almost 40 minutes to get. When the waitress came with our food, she says "do you want me to take your eggs back, you wouldn't fix it like that at home?" It was almost raw. My corned beef hash clearly came from a can. The biscuit literally crumbled to pieces. We did get bloody mary's which had a layer of melted ice on top. Worst dining experience and nastiest food I've ever been served in my life. Got home and ate a bowl of Cheerios, which never tasted so good. In fairness, the coffee was good. If you want a good breakfast, go to BROKEN YOLK or BEACH BREAK CAFE. As locals, we go there all the time. Only decided on this place because Beach Break Cafe was closed.

I find this place delightful. The food isn't amazing but it's pretty good. They let you have your dog with you outside if you want and the flowers around the rock wall is so cute.

I guess I ordered the wrong thing. (?) This place is always crowded but WHY!? WHY!!??? I ordered the salad with chicken, avocado and walnuts. I've had better salads from Wendy's and at airports. Tasteless chicken thrown onto a bed of iceberg lettuce (EW are we in the Midwest? Do people still call this salad?) and romaine. Tasteless all for the price of $10.00. The flies come to visit more often than my server. I'm sitting in the hot sun obviously waiting for my 11 dollar check for a bad salad and a glass of water. What is wrong with California!!!??? Why would anyone eat here!?

The Daily News Cafe is a fun spot to grab breakfast. The parking sucks and the lines are long, but it is worth doing every one in a while. I get the huevos rancheros which are fixed to perfection. The outdoor ambiance is very nice and the prices are not very high.

My parents love to come to this cafe when they are in town. My husband and I will eat there from time to time as well. We love the friendly service and the list of options. The whole vibe is great and it's lovely to sit out on the patio and watch people stroll by. The food isn't dissapointing and their prices are reasonable. It's definitely one of the first places we choose when going for breakfast.

  • Stanley S.

For lunch or brunch it is ideal with the warm weather to sit outside. Breakfast served all day and a great mixture of home cooking. Loved the omelette and the Chicken ortega sandwich was delicious. Casual and relaxed atmosphere for people watching.

I was excited when I saw there menu. I ordered the French toast that they say is there specialty. It came out literally 2 minutes after we ordered and when I tried it the inside was still cold like it had been previously made and reheated but not well. Even the latte I got wasn't good. I really wanted to.like.this place and it just wasn't good.

My boyfriend and I ate here yesterday. I picked it out after seeing their website. We were so disappointed in the food!!! We thought because they advertise the fact that they make their baked goods that the biscuit choice with the omelette would be a good one. What was presented was a mound of very pale and incredibly crumbly thing. It literally fell apart like sand. The home cooked potatoes with my omelette were undercooked and had not a speck of seasoning, onions or anything and tasted a little old. I don't understand how they can serve food like this.

    (1)
  • Anthony B.

At least the service was good (our server was great) too bad the food is terrible.

  • Tracy F.

A great location, busy with patrons, near the water . . . But the food, while plentiful, lacked taste. My wife had a delicious looking seafood sandwich. I ordered the excellent looking chicken salad sandwich. If they had tasted half as good as they looked, we would have been satisfied and the star rating would be higher. Unfortunately, the bland taste was evident for both meals. The fries served with the sandwiches were very generic. The other reason behind the two stars is our waiter was quite odd. Without going into too much mundane detail, suffice it to say he just had a way about him that made us feel awkward. From what I could observe of the other staff, there seemed to be a couple of other interesting individuals as well. The prices were reasonable, but, mainly because of the disappointing food, we will not be eating at this spot again.

This is our sunday funday go to begin the day spot. The BF and I are weekly regulars. Yes, they can be super busy, and yes, tons of tourists....but they are fast and friendly and the food is yummy. The staff is swamped usually but they're helpful and oh so San Diego. They make espressos there, and they have soy! which is a staple for me. We usually get eggs, always cooked exactly how we order them, the NON-GREASY hash browns, yay, and the sausages-our favorite part::) The muffins and cinn.rolls are fan-freakin-tastic.( you can get a muffin instead of toast if you like) and the OJ tastes fresh and delish as well. A big plus for this place is location location location. After you eat take a walk along the very nearby seawall and maybe check out the charming shops. MUCH love for the Daily News. See you guys on Sunday :)

  • Sarah G.

Cute place, banana muffin was rubbery, coffee was mediocre, the omelet was blah, but the potatoes were good, & the French toast (their signature dish) was good! And the mimosas were good (good OJ). The service was friendly & prompt. We sat on the patio which was nice as it had heaters, (it was a grey day). Basically a very casual place.

By far our favorite breakfast joint in Carlsbad ! They also have a lunch menu but we always go for breakfast. Great service, and atmosphere. Just a block from the beach. Very affordable prices. Always busy, but we never have had to wait long for a table. We love Daily News Cafe !

    (5)
  • Samantha C.

Not sure why ratings aren't higher. I enjoyed this place because of the great food, friendly staff, and cozy family style decor. You must get the veggie omelet with red potatoes and also can't miss out on their famous blueberry muffins! Large portions and reasonable prices!

  • William H.

If you're looking for a disappointing breakfast experience, then this is your place. Anybody confused about what a "tourist trap" is? Well, here it is! Kudos for their consistency: Solid 2 stars across the board.

  • Julie S.

Not a bad place for breakfast or lunch. It's located at the corner street of C-Bad Blvd & C-Bad Village drive. I usually come here before or after I lay out on the beach. Why do I always come here I have no idea, maybe cause there is nothing else that is walking distance or any good restaurants here. Service was Ok. Patio seating, but you get a little bitty view of the busy street. Food was all right, after eating here last Saturday I am pretty bummed with the way they made my mushroom swiss omelette it looked like they just cracked the eggs into the pan and added the ingredients in without beating the eggs first... not impressed.

  • Hunter C.

By Far the Best Place to Eat Breakfast in the City of Carlsbad! Breakfast literally right next to the beach, servers are all friendly especially the young lady who wears the pink sparkly toms. Get her, she is the most friendliness. Hash browns are to die for! Egg, Remarkable! Even the coffee is unbelievably good! The Daily News has stepped up their game even more then they have before. Keep up the good work!

Pros: outdoor seating, good service, wide variety of menu options. Cons: menu was a little confusing on options (increases the cost), flies hovering in outdoor patio depending on where you sit My wife and I went there for a weekend brunch. I ordered the 3 egg omelette w/avocado, onions, and bell peppers with hashbrowns and toast, and a hot chocolate. Hot chocolate was awesome, toast was fine. Omelette was ok. Hash browns were not done well. The exterior of the glob was cooked well, but the interior left something to be desired. We sat on the patio next to the sidewalk entrance, and we had to battle flies the whole meal. My wife looked around and noticed that no one else seemed to be having the same problem. Maybe if they took the glass windows down the breeze would have prevented this, but not sure. All in all, it was ok.

We thought this place was alright, especially for free, with the voucher we got for staying at the Carlsbad Inn. The 1st morning we ate there, eh, the pancakes were dry & tasteless, the busboy had most of his butt showing, he was slow & seemed very unhappy. The 2nd day, we had much better service as we ordered lunch. I had the Club Sandwich with Clam Chowder--very good. We'll return, especially since we'll be staying at the Carlsbad Inn again.

  • Lili S.

Not bad but not great. Average. I had eggs Benedict. Sauce was boring, the yolks were nice and runny though. The potatoes were boring too. I salt and peppered the heck out of them! My fiancé had pancakes. Nice and fluffy but nothing special. The blueberry muffin was tasty though! And service was friendly and attentive. Not worth the drive! I'd rather go to Mrs. T's cafe! in Encinitas area.

Never again....I should have trusted my fellow Yelpers but we were hungry and found ourselves in Carlsbad...what were we to do. Fries=soggy. BLT=just that...BLT and 2 pieces of bread (no sauce, mayo...nothing). Next time I'll just stay hungry.

Ordinary breakfast menu. Fair value and not too greasy. Outdoor seating available. Cute building and good fast service. Food 3 stars. Service and ambiance 5 stars.

Really nice café. Their food tastes very good and the price isn't too bad, maybe a little on the pricy side. The location is great and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

    (5)
  • Michael C.

Food and service always very good. Only reason they lose a star is for the horrid parking. Half the parking lot is off-limits (20 minute parking for frozen yogurt, 10 minute parking for hotel check-in), and street parking is very sparse.

  • Eddie C.

Sticky Buns were amazing, as was everything else (breakfast burrito & Greek omelettes)

  • Heather H.

This place is super touristy but I'm giving it 4 stars because as a vegetarian, usually it's hard for me to just get a freaking sandwich that doesn't have meat on it and also doesn't have a bunch of weird ingredients in it. Just because I'm a vegetarian doesn't mean I want to eat eggplant and marinated red peppers in every sandwich I eat. Sometimes less is more. You would be surprised how many places give you a hard time when you want a sandwich that just has lettuce, tomato, cheese, and avocado on it. Not Daily News Cafe. She was really cool when I asked her if that was possible and my order came out exactly how I wanted it. My side of pasta salad was pretty tasty, and I had a bite of my husband's vegetarian split pea soup and it was delicious. We've gone there before for breakfast and I liked what I had as well. It's not the BEST place in town, but it's not bad and it's kind of fun to sit on the patio and watch people go by.

  • Mia E.

"Meh," is right! Seriously, how does one mess up scrambled eggs? You either leave bits of shell or you barely scramble the eggs. Uhh, check both of those at Daily News. But what's up with that? I can almost understand leaving tiny shell bits, I do that sometimes. But my scrambled eggs showed up part white and part broken yolk. Y'know what I mean....you're lazy and don't have a clean bowl to beat the eggs so you crack the eggs in your pan and swirl a bit. Okay for me to do that when I'm desperate for dinner but not what I expect when I pay for it at a restaurant. Put some effort in it! Bacon was soggy and the hash browns were mushy too. The sourdough toast was good. I tried my friend's lobster omelette and it was pretty good. And that's what saved this from being a 1-star joint. That and the coffee was pretty good too.

    (2)
  • Katherine N.

I came here this morning with my friend, it is a casual restaurant with seating inside and out. The staff was busy(which is expected when it is 11:45 on a Sunday)but very friendly and attentive! My friend ordered an omelet, coffee and a mimosa. And I ordered a coffee, bloody mary, and 2 eggs scrambled with sausage links. When we got our coffee, it was probably the last two cups from their current brew because it wasn't that hot. As in 1 minute after it was brought to us, it was only warm. I don't know about her coffee but mine had bits of coffee grounds in it. I know that this place is not a bar, and it's not like you come here for Sunday mimosas or whatnot, but if you have Bloody Marys listed as a drink on the drink menu, you should know it needs some spice, any amount of spice! I got mine, and it had nothing but tomato juice and vodka in it! Not even a visible grain of pepper! It is the customer's responsibility that if you come to a place like this, that you add as much Tabasco or pepper that you want! But the customer shouldn't have to spend 5 minutes, trying to add this stuff to even get the slight taste of spice to their bloody mary. Our eggs were alright, although mine weren't exactly cooked. Most of it was still watery and not so scrambled. The outside of the sausage links was crunchy, yet was cold on the inside. My friend's omelet was good minus the fact that what was supposed to be cooked inside with the omelet was sprinkled on top and around it. And her home fries were cold. I really want to like this place, so I'm going to give it another try next time I have the opportunity.

  • Steve F.

It's a totally passable coffee/sandwich shop. Others at my table commented; noisy, slow service and lousy salad. I will comment, the mimosa's inspired us to visit the liquor store across the street and continue...

We were staying at the Carlsbad Inn next door to the Daily News. It was so good we had breakfast there six days in a row. They have a fairly complete menu, but I was grooving on the Mexican dishes - huevos rancheros and breakfast burrito. Also had a lobster omelette and Belgian waffle. All good stuff, and good service.

    (4)
  • Christina G.

First time I went, I really enjoyed it, the food was excellent, love the patio. But recently, it seems as though the food quality has declined and it is no longer worth the price.

    (3)
  • Anya B.

Tourist trap right next to the hotel at the beach. Waiting line is forever long on an ongoing basis and you'll wait just to find out that you could have had much better around the corner or even at home. Living in Carlsbad I can promise you, you'll find much better service and food in any of the other breakfast spots around. I tried it once and won't be back. Pricey without a coupon for what you get, and it's not even very good.

    (2)
  • Christine D.

We came here because we had a voucher from the Carlsbad Inn for breakfast. We were seated quickly and our server was prompt taking our order. Once our food arrived though we didn't feel rushed and enjoyed our breakfast. The food was decent. I had the vegetarian omelette with egg whites. My daugher's kid's pancake was huge and she was tickled that they made it into a bunny. We had great service and a good tasty breakfast. It was a great way to start our day. We'll go back tomorrow.

I occasionly will come here for breakfast due to the cozy little atmosphere. It has a nice feel to it pretty good food, the thing that let me down however was the small portions of the food and me finding myself still hungry afterwards for what you get the prices arent really fair. the servers are nice and there is good outdoor seating, nothing extrordinary though. 7/10- Enjoyable yet, definite room for improvement

Second time we have been here and awful experience both times. This time was after the calrsbad 5k and after asking how long the wait would be for a table of 3 with 2 dogs the host said 10 minutes. We were shocked given the crowd and asked if he was sure. 30 minutes later after seeing two tables go ahead of us we asked what was up and were only then informed that the only dog-friendly tables were the two outside the patio area that had just sat down and ordered when we first arrived. Why he chose not to tell us that originally I don't know - he even came out and played with our dog but frankly the whole experience felt deceitful and greedy. Why restaurants in north county keep kicking dogs off their patios while downtown choices keep expanding is equally baffling. Oh well, will never need to stop here again - the cafe across the street (Elysa) had great sandwiches and was faster.

    (1)
  • Michael B.

Food was pretty good, biscuit and gravy was the highlight. I'm giving them only 3 stars based on the fact that bacon and eggs is $10 and you only get 2 strips of bacon. I know bacon is expensive guys, but come on. Broken Yolk or Beach Break Cafe is a better bang for your buck.

I have to give this 5 stars, for breakfast anyway! We recently visited. I love that they serve fresh fruit. I had it with oatmeal, with a continental breakfast. The food is good, not gourmet, but good. Service was always good, only one waitress was not cheerful. She was just quiet. The other two were very cheerful. We had breakfast there at least 4 of the 5 days we visited Carlsbad. Glad I did not trust the reviews. I trusted the crowd chowing down at the restaurant!

Daily News Cafe is a quaint little spot on the corner of a very busy downtown Carlsbad, but it's outdoor patio is very sheltered from the noise, hustle and bustle of the street. Decent prices, but you go their for the ambiance. I like the biscuits & gravy, omelette's and their coffee is really good.

During my parent's visit, we went out to brunch at the Daily News Café based on its beautiful location and quaint but classy atmosphere. It is a beautiful restaurant and the girl who waited on was super friendly and attentive, however the food was the definition of average. I got two eggs over easy with sourdough toast, cottage cheese and bacon. The bacon was delicious, and the eggs were okay with exception that one was cooked medium. The nice waitress offered to replace my eggs but I had already eaten all the whites and was working on the one that was cooked correctly-but I do commend her for the offer. The cottage cheese was kind of clumpy for my taste as well. My boyfriend ordered the fish tacos, and while he said the fish was cooked perfectly they kind of skimped on the sauce so he had to request more. My dad enjoyed his Chef Salad since they were very liberal with the toppings. My mother got coffee- which she said was hot and freshly brewed, but also said her Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich was so-so (not bad but not great either). This place also gets really packed for breakfast and brunch so there may be a little bit of a wait in order to get a table (especially on the patio) so plan ahead if you want to eat here. I am not in a hurry to return, but I wont discount the possibility. If I could give it 3.5 stars I would.

Amazing breakfast and decent prices. Only complaint was that I ordered an iced mocha and it tasted more like chocolate milk

Adorable location in the heart of Carlsbad Village. Faces the Ocean House. The food is fresh, the service is quick, and the atmosphere is relaxing. Have a great breakfast menu selection for you healthy eaters as well as naughty food if you want to indulge.

The Daily News Cafe is a decent breakfast place with really great prices for Carlsbad. I had the cinnamon bread French toast, which was good and satisfying. The side of sausage I had was greasy and seemed like a typical store-bought sausage - nothing special and it wasn't good.

This is the email I sent to the owner of the place BOB RUANE, he NEVER REPLIED TO IT. MY BOYFRIEND PERSONALLY CALLED HIM AT HIS WORK PLACE AND ASKED HIM WHY? HE SAID BECAUSE IT WAS TOO DEGRADING, AND HE DID NOT LIKE THAT I USED THE WORD COCAINE. I APOLOGIZED FOR USING THE WRONG WORD BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE EMAL. HE COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT OUR EXPERIENCE, NEVER APOLOGIZED FOR ANYTHING. THIS IS THE OWNER OF THE PLACE. NO WONDER THE SERVICE AND FOOD ARE JUST AS BAD! HE ANALYZED EVERY WORD AND READ IT USING HIS OWN INTERPRETATION OF IT. "HE SAID TO ME, I DIDN'T THINK I HAD TO REPLY TO IT, ITS YOUR OPINION, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?" THE OWNER DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HIS CUSTOMER AND PROVED IT TO US. HOWEVER, HE IS FORGETTING THAT EVERYTHING IS WORD OF MOUTH, WORD OF MOUTH, AND I TOLD HIM THAT. BUT HE DIDN'T SEEM TO WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING I SAID. Dear Sir, This was my very first time eating at your place for breakfast with my boyfriend. I like you to know about my experience because I did find your food good somewhat decent, however; although it was on a Monday the 19th to be specific and it was busy yes, the service I received was not at all what I consider good customer service it was way below average. When we first went in we sat inside because all the tables outside were taken. Our server was what I would consider someone on cocaine, meaning running around like a nut job, taking orders, running back and forth and so on. I understand that you have to be fast at serving people, but you should not forget customer service in the process. I ordered a cappuccino and my boyfriend a hot chocolate, both of them are suppose to be hot correct? My was cold and so was my boyfriend, first strike, I personally went up to the bar and asked to be remade and also put much less milk in it, all it was was a lot of milk and tasted quite blend. Then we got our breakfast, I ordered crepes breakfast and my boyfriend the special omelet of the day. Again, my breakfast was totally cold, the inside of the crepes totally cold, the hash brown totally cold, I called the waitress over who by the day did not like the fact that we had complained about our cold drinks and yes had an attitude about it, so she was not happy to hear about the breakfast been cold, she picked up the plate and said "The plate is hot", I said the plate is hot but not the food. No I'm sorry nothing from her just again seemed totally upset about my complaint. She left brought the breakfast back, this time it was boiling hot however, you could tell that they had put it in the microwave or wherever they did back there, so I told her exactly that "Did you guys just throw it in the microwave?" She said "I don't know what they did, but I am really busy with other customers". Are we kidding here sir? Is that the way that she treats customers? And who was I, wasn't I a customer? And I even told her that. Sorry you are busy but I am a customer, its not my fault that you guys keep giving me cold food/drinks. The customer service part of it was unacceptable and not something I was at all pleased about. I did not like the way I was treated and did not like the way my food was prepared. Even if you are that busy you should still provide good customer service/experience, you do not treat customers that way. Maybe she needs to slow down and concentrate on one table at a time instead of trying to be Mrs. Wonderwoman with an attitude. The food should be hot and so should the drinks period. There is absolutely no excuse for such behavior. Very disappointed with the service. Her name was Heidi. Sorry to have to write such long email, but I feel that you need to know that no matter how busy a place may get, you should not forget the fact that people come there to spend their money to keep you happy and open, and customers should not be treated as poorly as she treated us. Thank you and have a great week

I'm a bit shocked at the overall 3 star rating. I've been going to Daily News Cafe about 3-4 times a year for a good 10 years and rarley get the same thing. Never been disappointed. We actually make a decent 20 minute drive to get here. It really has everything from good food to friendly service to a great location. Eat a huge breakfast or lunch and go for walk on the beach! My only gripe is the wait can be long, which might explain the negative reviews. People might feel like, heck, "I just waited 30 minutes and I want ot be waited on and plafce my order immediately when sit down". Well, life don't work that way. When my wife and I started coming here it was just us, and now we have a few kids ages 5.5 and 1.5. The service staff is always super kind to them. On more than one occassion my older daughter scarfed down her french toast so fast that they gave her another kids serving for free! Anyway, bottom line, get there early on weekends and expect to wait even then. Slow down, this ain't LA. Go to McDonalds if you want fast.

Small place with a decent sized outdoor patio/seating area. We had brunch here with a big party and were treated decently considering we took a while before we ordered. Their food is okay - not great and not disgusting - and definitely not large in portion. This is definitely not a place that would stick out in my head and that I would remember to go back to the next time I visited Carlsbad.

I love this place..It's my favorite breakfast nook. The staff is great, the food fantastic and the coffee - oh the wonderful, tasty amazing coffee. I recommend the omelets - great! Outdoor seating is tops, especially on a warm weekend - great for people watching. It gets busy so come early and bring a paper they serve fresh coffee as you wait- you'll be sure to come back!

I stopped by Daily News for a late breakfast with a friend. We were both starving and the service was so slow. When we finally got our food, we had to wait another 5 minutes for silverware. We aren't sure what took our waiter so long to go get it! Anyway, the food was good and I would go back. It is a good place to go if you want to relax and catch up with friends. I wouldn't recommend it if you are hungry and want to eat quickly.

This morning I had the best Chicken Fried Steak and eggs of my life. I ordered mine with fresh fruit. The fruit was very good and very fresh!!! The biscuits were a little dry but the gravy was really good. I had a Soy Latte that was also really good. The service was good. The cafe is pretty small so there was a little bit of a wait on this Saturday morning at 10:00 am. It was charming. This was my first time there. I liked it. I'll go back.

Even worse than the last time. I give two stars because the waiters are busting their butts to make up for the terribly overpriced bland food. Unless someone forces you to eat here, I would suggest eating anywhere else. If you like Denny's and hate low prices, this is the place for you. Bring loads of cash and low expectations and you will have the time of your life!

Just OK. You rarely ever see a server. The food is average. I would rather eat breakfast at IHOP. They do have the location going for them, but not even a water view is available at this coastal restaurant. Granted, I do have friends that LOVE this place, but I have yet to see why. I do like their espresso drinks, which are moderately priced and probably the best I've had (including popular coffee chains). I really think this restaurant was designed with the tourist in mind, someone wanting that late morning, eat-near-the-beach experience.

We though because of the crowds and wait that we must have stumbled upon a gem. Not the case. Friendly service but uninspired food. We went for breakfast and none of our dishes were anything special. Omelettes , panckaes, and breakfast burrito we all average at best.

My favorite breakfast place in Carlsbad! The coffee is great and so is the food. I love their omelets and red potatoes and I always have to have a fresh baked blueberry muffin. The outside seating makes this place great.

I absolutely LOVE this breakfast place, staff included. I go here at least once a week. The biscuits and gravy are my top pick. There isn't anywhere that has a better country style sausage gravy. The food is great and the service is fantastic. I highly recommend eating here and for the best experience ask to sit with Gator. She provides excellent service and has an amazing, stoked on life personality!

Loved it! Couldn't find anywhere else to really ahve breakfast where we could sit outside, and the Daily News fit the bill. The portions were huge, the juice was freshly squeezed, and the menu had A LOT to offer. Can't wait to visit Carlsbad again!

This used to be one of my favorite breakfast locations. I'm giving it only 3 stars because I feel that it has slipped in the past year. The food isn't as tasty as it used to be, and it doesn't come out piping hot like it should (though it used to). The coffee also seems to have joined in the Daily News' downward spiral. I truly hope they clean up their act - this is a great location for sat/sun morning breakfast.

They said the 3rd time's a charm! Indeed, that is what happened. Went back to Daily News Cafe because of the great location, nice weather, casual atmosphere and the warm service... (Yes I am leaving the food item out --- on purpose.) And this time around, our breakfast turned out EXCELLENT! Don't know if they've got a new chef - But well, whatever it is, we are definitely coming back here again!

Best part about this place was the server. Hot chocolate was surprisingly good. Food (eggs, bacon, hash browns) was okay- hash browns were undercooked. Cinnamon roll was good. Biscuit was not very good. Omelet with feta, spinach, etc was just ok- spinach wasn't fresh. Filled w/ tourists, as one would expect I suppose for the location. 45 minute wait to get in on Sunday morning- Beach Break Cafe in Oceanside is worth the wait, this place is not.

  • Melissa S.

I have eaten here several times over the years, and the food/service has always been consistent. This past Sunday my husband and I decided to eat here. It was 9:00, and we expected there to be a wait. We put our name down, waited for 15 minutes and then were seated. The table they sat us at was outside of their patio area (near the red phone booth), we were happy with that table as we had our two small dogs with us, and didn't want them bothering anyone. 10 minutes went by before anyone greeted us. And the waitress only greeted us when she brought food to the table next to us and said she would be back soon to help us. She knew we were there as she had brought drinks and taken the order of the table next to us when we were seated. So we waited some more, and after 15 minutes of no greeting, no water, no coffee.... we decided to leave. I am really glad we did - We ended up having an amazing breakfast at Garcias on State Street.

Hands down the best breakfast in town. I have been on a mission to find a good breakfast and not spend $$$$ I found it :) They serve nice portions and very reasonable for a touristy location. I saw a few locals in there and that always is a good sign. The service was good and it was busy. All the food coming out of the kitchen looked so good, can't wait to go back.

Had breakfast here; four of us split a couple of omlettes and sticky buns. The sticky buns were great, the eggs were okayfine, the waitress was attentive and the food was just as ordered. About a five minute wait at 9:15 Sunday morning. The bathroom is outside upstairs down the hall. People-watching was probably the best part; this section of Carlsbad seems to get more than it's share of eurotourists.

Place was popping for breakfast during July 4th weekend. We were luckily seated outside however right to the fence which was a bit hidden. After approx ~ 10-15 minutes, our waiter took our order. I ordered a Ham and Cheese Omelet with side order of Red Potatoes and Sourdough toast. My gf enjoyed a Turkey Crossaint Sandwhich with fries. Food is 1/2 excellent, 1/2 good. Omelet was pretty meaty for an omelet which is a big plus for me. My large orange juice appeared to be a small glass. Took a bite of the Turkey Crossaint sandwich and the turkey was mighty tasty in the crossaint. Service was semi OK. Thus, why only A-OK for the rating. Food was noticeably long and our waiter never happened to check back on much after our meal finally arrived.

I've been here before about two years ago and haven't returned since because of the slow service. Tried it again today since my friend wanted to go there and it was her birthday. Two years later and the service is still slow. I ordered the french dip sandwich. It was okay, but nothing to write home about. I also had a bloody mary. It was kind of old-fashioned (celery instead of olives, not very spicy), but strong. Husband ordered a calamari sandwich which he said was not so great and clam chowder soup which he proclaimed, "good." Of course, hours later, he says it did not sit well. My friend and my son got the pancakes. Honestly, I think that's probably the way to go with this place. I had a few bites of my son's pancakes and they were actually pretty good. Probably won't be returning on my own volition anytime soon.

I would have to say that the set up and ambiance of this cafe isnt the best. Inside there are a few outdated dining tables and outside is a crowded patio under a realtor office. The service is pretty good but there is often a wait because of the lack of space. I have been eating breakfast here for years and what keeps me coming back is the reasonably priced food and great coffee.

Great location. I was taking the kids to the beach and was hungry for lunch. That is all that was good about this place. The service was slow. The food was okay. I ordered milk for the kids, but did not get it until the food came out. With kids, you need to feed them quickly or else it is World War III. It was not even that busy. I am not sure if they were short staffed. In any case, I would not recommend this place. We only gave this place a try since we were close by.

Had the eggs benedict. The hollandaise sauce tasted like it was canned and the eggs were way, way over-poached. To her credit, the waitress did try to warn me of the inconsistency of the eggs benedict. On a positive note, I learned that egg yolk is a huge part of the flavor this dish. Other than that, service was friendly and coffee was good.

I've been here a couple of times and I thought it was good both times. The first time I went for breakfast with a girlfriend and we both loved it. The second time I went, it was for lunch and again we weren't disappointed. We split a lobster roll and Greek salad and it was very good. I would recommend trying this place.

When we first moved to carlsbad we started going here for breakfast...never great but cool location..super touristy so its always crowded..then we got grossed out..its pretty dirty and the service is there in order to bring a plate to the table..in other words service sux...food is edible but nothing to brag about...go there for the location but if you are looking for cleanliness and great food...don't go here!

I drove up from Del Mar on Saturday morning to purchase the signature, fresh sticky buns. Unfortunately the buns were stale and obviously from the previous day. When I notified the manager she was defensive and was reluctant to offer something baked that day. Unfortunately they did not have anything fresh but continued to sell their items as fresh. The employees did not look like they were happy and the managers attitude was terrible. The location is great but the service and vibe make this place not worthwhile.

We went on a busy weekend and the service was alittle slow - but the food was pretty good. I ordered crepes which I've never had before and thought they were very good - however, they came with hollandaise sauce and that was a disappointment, alittle grainy, made me wonder if it was made from an instant powder or something, it had no tang to it at all, which is what is so wonderful about hollandaise sauce! My husband got an omelot and said that although it was very good flavorwise, it was overcooked, so if you order an omelot, ask for it "soft"'. Other than that, we got muffins instead of toast and asked to get them first before the meal, they were served warm and were great with coffee. They also use Monin brand flavored syrups for their lattes which is top of the line all natural and great tasting - which was why I was so surprised about the Hollandaise sauce...okay, I'll shut up about the sauce! We sat on the patio out front and it was very nice.

I like fresh foods. I stop, however, at fresh meats, such as Corned Beef Hash with that "just out of the can" taste. Cold Corned Beef Hash is the human equivalent of Alpo, not that I would know..... Earnest and hardworking staff give this place 2 stars instead of 1. But then again, you can work hard piling a load of shite, and you'll still end up smelling like shite.

Any place that serves breakfast all day gets bonus points in my book. As I get older, I just don't have the *stomach* for Denny's but I do like to have breakfast after 10 a.m. I headed over to Daily News Cafe at 2:00 on a day that makes you feel blessed to live in Carlsbad. Beautiful! I could get lost on that thought but I won't... It was a bit chilly on the patio so I sat under a heat lamp. Nice. The waitress quickly brought coffee. Needed that. She confirmed that they serve breakfast all day. Perfect! My meal arrived quickly and was great. Very tasty. A lot of food and it was all very fresh. Nothing tasted frozen or canned. My waitress kept the coffee coming and made sure I had everything I needed. I wanted a nice "breakfast for lunch" and that's exactly what I got. And to top it off, I got to drive up the coast on my way home. Rough life.

Great food & a very happening location. Located in the main town square of Carlsbad, it's an awesome place to visit. Got a to-go order to eat at our resort room and definitely will be having again. And the orange juice tasts like the same fresh OJ I have when I use my juicer with fresh oranges at home.

Had the Rancho omelet - just average. Hashbrowns were average as well. The English muffin was pretty good but would have been better if not "buttered" with a greasy substance that was definitely not real butter. Location is good but there are much better breakfast and lunch options in the area.

I used to come here a lot when I was in high school with my friends, it was definitely a favorite brunch spot for us. But that was a few years ago and I have been away in college and boy has it changed since then. I took my friends from school here on their first trip to Carlsbad hoping to impress them with a great meal but left feeling embarrassed for taking them to such a horrible restaurant. I got an omelet with cheese, tomato, and avocado. Firstly, there was one meager avocado slice on top of my omelet which was a total let down. The omelette itself wasn't much better. It was flavorless and I wasn't sure if it was even fully cooked or not. It was my friend though, who really experienced the worst of the worst. She had ordered chicken strips and when they came out, they were raw. as in uncooked. At first we thought it was just one, and flagged the waitress down to tell her it was undercooked. She then took just the ONE strip back after asking if the other strips looked cooked. I don't know if I am expecting too much but I always thought they should take back the whole dish if there was something wrong with it. Then after she left we started checking the other strips more thoroughly and found that the other strips were even worse than the first, One was so raw that the chicken still had the fleshy pink consistency of raw chicken under the breading. Overall, I think this was one of my worst experiences I have ever had and highly suggest that anyone thinking of eating at the Daily News Cafe seriously reconsider. This place has certainly gone downhill in the past few years.

I just left this place and let me say, the food is not worth the wait! When I first got there I had to drive around to find a parking place because the available spots designated for the cafe were full. Finally found one and went in the sign said the hostess will seat you so I sat down and waited. Then I noticed that people were coming in and going to the cashier so I asked a woman sitting next to me if I was suppose to go and give them my name she said yes. The place was pretty busy but I could tell most people were tourist that came across from the hotel next door, which is probably the only reason this horrible place is still in business, the don't need repeat customers just a good supply of rotating tourists and they are located in the perfect position for unsuspecting tourists. Anywho so my name gets called and I am taken to a table outside and wouldn't you know it the chair is FILTHY! The hostess had already walk away and I know she had to see how dirty the chair was before she sat me there. I cleaned the chair myself and then my waitress came and took my order. I ordered the cappuccino 2 eggs over easy, bacon, red potatoes, and a muffin. Now here is where it goes from bad to worse. The small portion sizes for the price was a joke my cappuccino turned out to be an espresso, my eggs were SO RUNNY I NEEDED A STRAW TO CONSUME THEM (no they weren't scrambled either some variation of over easy very very undercooked) and my potatoes WERE ROCK HARD. The only redeeming factors were that the bacon was good and the muffin was soft and warm. I only saw my waitress when she took my order, brought my food, and gave me my check so she RECEIVED NO TIP because the service was awful! I then went to the cashier to pay and she asked the required "how was everything" I told her the bacon and the muffin were fine everything else not so much. Her response was aww I am sorry want a free coffee...lol wow ummm no is all I said. She didn't bother asking what was wrong specifically so I didn't see the point of asking how was everything if you are not going to get specifics. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worse enemy...then again yeah i would this place is definitely a good punish or revenge for someone doing you wrong. Remember if you order the eggs ask for a straw to go with it. What a waste of $12 and I left just as hungry as I came!

For two weeks out of every summer for years I've been eating breakfast here. And every time the food is good. It can take a little while to be seated and served but its worth the wait. The staff has always been friendly. Don't forget to try the mimosas!

We have a condo in Carlsbad a few feet away from this restaurant. It is my favorite place for breakfast. The outdoor patio is large and well covered. The wait can be long on weekends, so get there early. The food is great, service is decent on busy days. I just love being in Carlsbad at our condo by the beach. This place is a place I will frequent.

I love this place. It is a small, cozy cafe, conveniently located in downtown carlsbad. Our family of five arrived around 9am and were greeted by a friendly hostess. The wait for our table was short considering how packed it was, about ten minutes and then we were seated. We had a friendly server and the food came fast which is really important when you are dining with a 2, 4, and 6 year old! We had pancakes, bacon, sausage, and french toast and everything was really good! The pancakes were big (but not too big) and fluffy. The breakfast meats were not super greasy and the bacon was nice and crisp. Each of our meals was less than ten dollars. We ordered two adult meals and two kids meals and at the end of our meal everyone was full and we still had 3 pancakes left! I didn't try the cinnamon rolls but they look DELICIOUS and they are only $1.95 each. I am going back tomorrow morning to eat breakfast here and I will let you know if the cinnamon rolls are as good as they look!

So, when just arriving its 30 minutes to find parking, then a 20 minute wait for a table for two, followed by terrible customer service by the servong staff. Food is marginal if it came out hot... Which it doesn't. I spent $30 for two people on brunch, which was WAY too much. The prices look reasonable, but it should be half the cost for what you get. The waitress was short and unfriendly. The omlette we got which was supposed to have sauteed mushrooms had raw mushrooms, the spinach was cold and wilted, like it had been left out and then put in as an after thought, the cheese they use is cheap and congeals nastily before it gets to your table, and the hash browns were mushy and not cooked properly. The fish of the fish and chips were over fried and the chips were just barely on the warm side of cold. I cant say anything good about this place. Im shocked its still in business. If I could give negative stars, it would be a negative five.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it........! For the size of the place, there seemed to be alot of wait staff. Service was nice and friendly. On a Sunday morning, our party of 4 only had to wait a few minutes for our table even though there were a dozen people waiting ahead of us. The secret? Ask for an inside table. The outdoor patio area is nice and I guess people want to enjoy their breakfast outside. However the day we went, it started pouring rain right after we sat down. The patio is covered so you won't get wet though. Good old hearty breakfast is what you find here. Ordered the blueberry pancakes with sausage. Maybe I was hungry or hadn't had pancakes in awhile, but they were darn good. The breakfast croissant looked good as well, just order it with little or no cheese for it's overkill. I'd probably come back again...perhaps try to sit outside. =)

As a 15 yrs resident of Carlsbad I've decided to give this place a one more try after a bad experience and boycotting the eatery for 12 yrs. Sorry to say this place needs to be shut down!!!! DNC gives restaurants a bad name. I went for breakfast with my wife order scrambled eggs and the wife order an omelet.. The scrambled eggs were over cooked a basically scrapped from the bottom of the pan. The omelet was cold upon being served and was the worst omelet she had order in a long while. The cooks are basically hired help from Home Depot parking lot. The coffee was served cold and weak and the service was mediocre. Furthermore, how the health department has not shut this place down is beyond me as I felt sticky and dirty when I sat down. If it weren't for the tourist business this place would go broke. There are much better places to eat in Carlsbad and recommend you never spend a dime at this place.

We went here on a recent visit to Carlsbad by the referral of the valet at our hotel. I guess we should have asked someone else. We went there on a Tuesday morning and the parking lot was full, so we had to park underground and walk about a block away. We were seated right away. We had a party of 6 with two small children. The hostess gave me a dirty look when I brought my stroller into the patio area since my daughter fell asleep and I didn't feel like it was worth the trouble to wake her up and put her in a high chair. They sat us outside, with the sun beaming on top of our heads. Not all the tables had umbrellas, so I ended up sweating through my whole meal. The place wasn't full, however, service was extremely slow. Took over 30 minutes to get our cinnamon bun, pancakes, waffle and omelet. They claim that their buns are famous, but they didn't taste better than something from Cinnabun. The waffle was overcooked, and therefore dry and slightly burnt. But since we waited so long to get our food, I scarfed it down. My husband ordered coffee and they never offered to refill it. I was not impressed at all by this place.

Food was tasty but service was very slow.....almost like they had no organization in place for the wait staff. When we finally did get served the food was well prepared and worth showing up for.

So my original review of this place was great...however I spoke to soon. I went here Saturday with some friends and the service was horrible. The guy took forever to even welcome us and take our order. Then my friend found a hair in her gravy....unsat. A few minutes later, my boyfriend found two pieces of hair in his sandwich. So gross....never eatting here again....the Daily News Cafe is now going to be known as the "Hairy News Cafe".

In theory, a really nice place to hang out for breakfast on a weekend morning. But, they're always packed and service is slow. Still the portions are good and the prices are fair. Plus, they have a bike rack and water bowls outside for the dogs. Since we've been there last, they've added a few two-tops and umbrellas outside the patio. I recommend sitting out there for maximum people watching potential. If you aren't starving when you get there, not a bad choice. Take a newspaper. 2-1/2 stars.

The Daily News Cafe was so convenient to our hotel, it sort of felt like we had no choice but to try it. My fam and I woke up early and headed out for a walk, which led us right to the cafe. We were promptly greated and seated outdoors. The waitress was very attentive and eager to please. The morning specials included Steak and Eggs, which is what my wife ultimately ordered and shared with my son. My wife thought it tasted like boiled meat. Yuck!!! Not a good way to start off. I stuck to the basics: pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham and a blueberry muffin. The cakes, eggs, and muffin were all ok. It's really difficult to screw these up. However, the ham tasted and felt like it aged in some tupperware bowl for several weeks. Hold on, let me check my tooth!!! In any case, I was definetly not impressed and will walk on by this place next time. The best part of breakfast was walking it off at the beach. FINAL VERDICT: Food 2/5 (Definetly forgetable), Service 4/5 (She tried!!), Ambiance 4/5 (Cute place, but don't judge a book by it's cover).

This place gives the people of Carlsbad a bad name. We walked by and saw that it was busy, and assumed that it must be good. How in the world did this place get 3 stars - this place is SIMPLY THE WORST PLACE EVER (quoted directly from our 7 year old critic). We would give it a MINUS if we could. The food was awful and took forever - that is why there is a wait. How is it possible that it took over 45 minutes for kids chicken strip and kids cheeseburger ??? How ??? And how is OK for you to give only half of a child cheeseburger patty - we had to abandon the top bun and cut the bottom bun in half to make a descent bite (or 2 for our little girl - who was just starving from the beach)... we were kind with the tip, but none were deserving. Good thing they only serve breakfast and lunch ... who knows what the quality of the dinner might be like. I felt like we needed to do our civic duty by letting all waiting know that it was just awful.

Not a fan! It's a cute restaurant with a great location. The service was great! The food was NOT good. I could make better at home! Not impressed and won't go back!

On a business/pleasure trip to the area we had a late breakfast here. The food was good and reasonably price, service decent, and the location great. It has outdoor seating and a really good crab salad.

completely mediocre in every way possible.

went for breakfast and yes the location is great but that's the highlight. The food is mediocre, high volume, canned, bland meals. We tried the eggs Benedict, breakfast burrito, french toast.......and nothing homemade or memorable. By far the worst was the breakfast burrito, which i will describe as all tortilla with no stuffing served with marinara not roja or salsa. How does that happen this close to the border.

Walked here for Breakfast on a Sunday so we avoided the absolute nightmare of trying to find parking. We weren't in a big hurry which turned out to be a good thing. Started with putting our name on the list (10 min. max). I heard our name called and went in only to find that they had seated another couple. Didn't think to much of it (common name) until we waited another 10 minutes and still no call. Turns out the first time was OUR NAME. When I showed hostess the list - she laughed it off and seated us next to a blazing heater on the patio - we moved. Waiter came and got us coffee and took our order - good! That was the last we saw of him for at least 20 minutes. After watching another waitress serve coffee refills at least 3 times, we got up and got our own. Then he delivered our eggs benedict! Yum - NOT. Congealed sauce that tasted like it was probably canned. A piece of ham that would embarrass McDonalds and absolutely no presentation. Throw eggs and fried potatoes on a plate. We were hungry so we ate it. Not wanting to wait another half hour for the check and not being able to catch our waiter's eye - what a surprise - I went in to ask for our check. He looked at me and said he would get our waiter to which I patiently explained THAT HE WAS OUR WAITER! With so many wonderful breakfast places in Carlsbad we won't be back here.

I love this little place, it is my favorite place to go for breakfast. If you go, ask to be seated outside! Very cute atmosphere, very casual- wonderful for a quaint breakfast/brunch with family and friends, or perfect for hung over mornings:) The Omlets are fantastic, fresh baked everything esp. muffins are fantastic, flavored hot coffees, fresh fruit bowls, french toast, you name it- its all so yummy, but i love this place mostly because it gives you that sunday morning feeling, and you get to read the paper.....hense the name daily news cafe! gets pretty busy, so be prepared for a wait!

I'm giving this place 4 stars for the service. As for the food, mine was great, but then again I had scrambled eggs and bacon. . .can't mess that up too much. My daughter had 2 muffins and they were excellent too. The bathroom is outside of the restaurant and with 2 kids that was difficult. We did make it out there but came back to find our food gone. Fortunately I was finished. They brought us an extra muffin and a new cup of coffee so all was well in the universe once again. I liked the place. Nothing fancy.

This place has decent service, but TERRIBLE food. Prior to coming here I thought to myself that its pretty hard to mess up breakfast, but after today, that thought went out the door. I ordered the crepe that had scrambled eggs, avocado, then topped with hollandaise sauce. This dish came with potatoes and fruit. The best part of the dish was the fruit. The eggs were cold, the avocado tasted old, the potatoes didn't have any flavor, and the holladaise sauce wasn't very good. All the food on my plate was cold and I had to send it back. I rarely do this, but cold eggs just don't do it for me. My husband ordered an omelete and hashbrowns and we had to send back his plate as well because the hashbrowns were cold. Once we got our food back it tasted like they stuck my eggs in the microwave, which made the avocado in the crepe taste even worse. The only positive thing I can say about this place is that the blueberry muffin that came with my husbands meal was good. We also ordered a cinnamon roll, which was good, but not great. I won't be going back here. Obviously....

Whenever we are in Carlsbad this is our go to place for breakfast and or lunch. Home made baked goods are delicious! The Daily News has always been top notch for us, the service is remarkable compared to a lot of others and the prices are very reasonable and the menu is vast! The staff is very accommodating with minor changes to our orders and it is self one we run out of any drinks. 5 stars. The only thing I would change is get rid if the in house bakery, way too tempting way too good!

Tasty food. Great atmosphere. Usually not a long wait for 2 people. This is our preferred breakfast/brunch place in north county. The inlets are large and packed with ingredients. The tuna melt was spot on. I usually order the breakfast crepe which is on the lighter side but still filling. Try the fresh pastries.

There is nothing better than strong coffee, and pancakes, potatoes, and extra syrup. I love breakfast (a very unhealthy breakfast) and Daily news cafe is my favorite place to go in Carlsbad. The outdoor seating is very nice and comforting. The service is always great, the food is always hot and amazing. Can't wait to return and bring my loved ones with me! Great place!

People will wait 20 to 30 minutes for a table here. Really?! Daily News Cafe, besides its amazing patio and gorgeous location, does not seem to be overly distinguishing. I feel like I have been to this type of place over and over and over again. But kudos to this family-owned spot. They do keep a lovely cafe. And the service is pretty good. And the menu has ample offerings. And 2015 is its 25-year anniversary, I hear. Also, they cater and are able to accommodate larger parties with hundreds of guests. I went with the eggs Benedict, which came with a side of red potatoes (by choice of three options). The Benedict was just OK -- at $14. What a shame. The ham was not very flavorful. The poached eggs were poached too long, so there was very little soft, buttery yolk to enjoy. And the potatoes -- that was the greatest disappointment. A good number of them were not cooked all the way through and had that telltale starchy flavor. But the Hollandaise sauce? Delicious! Hats off to the chef there. I wish to make sauce as silky and smooth as this one day. I would not choose to return to Daily News again, but I do encourage you to give them a try. You may have an entirely different experience and, really, there is much on the menu to explore.

The food is good. Some of the wait staff is better than other members of the wait staff. We had a guy the last couple times that was great. Some of the others could learn from him. Long waits if you don't get there early & the price isn't the best. That being said we have been back several times & will go back. It's reliable.

Saturday 10AM. A very busy morning but it's common on weekends. Waited 20 minutes and seated inside... outside patio was full. Superb variety of breakfast choices predominantly vegetarian omelettes and health conscious selections. I had the veggie omelette and it very good, potion was just the right amount too. Service was also superb... attentive and friendly. Tip: Ask for ice tea or fresh coffee to go...and they would be happy to oblige.

Visited the Daily News Café for the second time over the labor day weekend. First time we ate there it was a pleasant experience, just the wife and I. Second experience will be our last. My wife had checked, and they advertise as being dog friendly, so we brought or small Golden Retriever, and both children, ages 10 and 14. Checked in, informed them of the dog so we needed to be on the patio, and was told 30-40 minutes...OK since it was a holiday weekend. 40 minutes go by so we check again...going to be another 10 minutes....20 minutes goes by, check in again....going to be another 5 and so on, and so on, and so on...... After an hour and a half, it's now noon, so we tell them we have to check out of our hotel in South Carlsbad at 1:30, so we either need a table now or have to leave. So they tell us to order our food, and a table should be ready by the time our food is. At this point we decide we just need to leave....and a table miraculously opens up. So we sit down at a table outside the regular patio by the waiting area, and my wife orders a drink...........oh, you wanted a table where you can order a drink, we can only serve drinks on the inside patio..... Get up and leave after wasting almost 2 hours of our trip. Do yourself a favor...DON'T GO THERE

I've been here a couple times for breakfast. While we were were exploring Carlsbad today my boys got hangry so we stopped into the Daily News around 2:00 and were seated outside right away. There is plenty of parking on the street or there is a parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. We had parked a few blocks away since we were checking out the town. Our server took our drink orders while we checked out the menu. We were stoked to learn they serve breakfast all day. We ordered pancakes, a bbq chicken sandwich, and a BLT. Holy moly there was a TON of bacon on the BLT! I ordered my bbq chicken sandwich without the bun and the server was kind enough to lettuce wrap it AND put the bbq sauce on the side. WIN! Totally loved her for doing that. My son loved his pancakes and sausage. Our server was awesome at refilling our drinks too. She wasn't overly attentive...she was just right!!! The restrooms are on the second floor and there just happened to be a wedding reception up there. We got to say hi to the bride as they were preparing for their grand entrance. ha! Cute place to have a reception for sure. Great food, excellent service, and awesome seats outside. We'll definitely be back!

This place was horrible for food but it has a nice patio. My husband pushed his plate to the end of the table and said thats the universal sign for this food sucks. The server seemed to be used to this type of behavior and didnt really seem to care. Why would they when they have so many first time out of towners that come here and pay for crappy food. We have never returned and would never fathom returning to this place. We pass by it almost daily and my name for it is the BAD NEWS CAFE. My husband thinks thats hilarious and true.

The service was great, the ambience was pretty lovely but the food wasn't worth the money. There are so many other delicious spots to try I wouldn't waste your time here .. The "ranchero" sauce was basically pace picante store salsa smothering the burrito and the ingredients in everything else seemed cheap, nothing fresh.

Lovely patio and convenient location, but the food isn't worth it. The Belgian waffles were a little soggy and flavorless. The croissant French toast was smothered with egg and tasted like an overdone omelette. I had an egg white omelette with spinach and sausage, but it looked and tasted like an entire package of frozen spinach was mixed with a couple tablespoons of egg... Couldn't get myself to finish it. The coffee was watery and the service was slow, I recommend trying one of the many other breakfast options in the area.

I've been here a few times and this time I came with my friend and her two small children. It looked pretty packed and I was worried we'd have to wait long with the kids. She made a reservation while I sat in the car with her kiddos and as we got them out and ready to go, our name was called right as we walked up to the door. Good timing! We were seated outside (it was full out there) and greeted promptly by a nice young man. My friend got an omelette with mushrooms and something else, hashbrowns, and an English muffin. I got the California omelette with avocado. We both got iced coffee. Our English muffins came buttered and that made both of us happy. I wasn't super thrilled with my omelette. It was described as something that came with avocado, but it only had two very thin slices of avocado on top and that's it. I thought it would be half of one. The omelette itself was cheesy though not extremely flavorful otherwise. It was still good and fulfilling. My hashbrowns were perfect and covered half of my plate, which is how I want them. The service was quick and friendly and overall the food was pretty good. I would also say the price for everything was worth my experience there.

If you care about the quality of your food and the ambiance of your environment, do not waste your time and money here. Came for breakfast and was immediately offset by the unkempt country feel. Hi, yea, we're on the shoreline of Carlsbad - not the cotton fields of Texas. The Americana style can be fun, but if you're going to commit to an idea, do it 100%. Aside from the lackluster setting, our server was rude and inattentive. Despite my growing appetite, once the food arrived I was already uninterested based on simple observation. The hollandaise sauce was served in a plastic ramekin (as if we were dining in a cafeteria) and had developed a film from sitting too long. Cutting into my eggs, they proved to be grey inside, which is a result from being overcooked. And, I could be wrong, but I'm just gonna say it - the bacon was totally microwaved. Overall the quality, care, and presentation of the food was incredibly poor. Upon closing out our bill, we came to realize that the server mixed up our cards and charged my sister and I for each other's meals rather than our own. Apparently following the clear instructions we wrote for splitting was too much of a job for her to handle. We will not even consider returning until some serious advancements have been made.

Came here for our last meal of our trip. I had the Cinnamon French toast which was yummy. Their bacon is the good thick kind that isn't too salty, my kids gobbled it all up. Hubby got the Neptune omelet with a side of the hollandaise sauce and he said it would have been a little bland without it. Staff was friendly and on point with clearing the plates and coffee refills. It wasn't blow my mind good, but I would come back again next time in town.

I am never disappointed whenever I come here! I usually order the traditional eggs Benny and a couple of mimosas! Everything is priced reasonably and the servers are always accommodating and nice! I always come late morning/early afternoon and it's only about a 5 minute wait, if that. The patio is a little crowded with all the tables and people but, it's manageable. I will definitely be back!

If you are with a group of only 2 , be prepared for a very long wait. They seat larger groups first even if a 2 person group was there way before the larger group!!! They don't break up larger tables when it can be easily done!!! DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO WAIT A VERY VERY LONG TIME!!!! They also lie about the wait time!!

For the first time in nearly 8 years, the hubby and I came back last Sunday morning for brunch. A lot of locals are known to visit this joint but during the summer months, out of towners flock here making the wait times very long. We've just made a habit of passing it by as an option because of it. Since our last visit, nothing much has changed other than cosmetic things. They painted the outside of the building but the inside of the restaurant remained as we had remembered. The weather over the weekend was super hot and humid so dining inside (without it being air conditioned) was not an option. We were instead seated in the outdoor patio facing the intersection of Carlsbad Blvd and Carlsbad Village Drive. Even with the fans and the umbrellas, it was still pretty toasty for it being along the coast. This NorCal girl at heart just can't hang in 80+ degree SoCal weather when one is trying to get her brunch on. Our waiter was Leo and he was fabulous from the start. Very attentive and friendly. Genuinely friendly and soft spoken. He got our drinks put through right away and when he returned he took our order; A side of fruit to be delivered first and Ham Eggs Benedict for me and scrambled eggs, bacon and potatoes for the hubby. The fruit arrived shortly after our order was placed which I very much appreciated. There's nothing worse than requesting something to come first and then get it when the entire meal is being served. I'm thrilled they got it right. My eggs bene was made puuurrrfectly! The consistency of the hollandaise sauce was right on point and the sprinkle of cayenne on top was the icing on the cake. I finished my plate completely. My husband on the other hand thought his bfast was nothing special but said it did the job. Daily News cafe probably isn't our first choice for brunch but we were happy we stopped into this local and popular breakfast spot. Leo, thanks for your fantastic service during our visit!

I will give them 2 stars because I have only been there 2 and both times the food was ok nothing special. If anything this place is still in business because of the great location. The servers and food is comparable to I hop. The first visit was ok the server was friendly and the food was warm. However still just ok. The second visit I brought my roommate for a bday brunch. It was a party of 7 we waited 15 min to be seated. At first most of us were in the sun. We asked to get shade over us but after being ignored we moved the umbrellas ourselves. The older oriental waitress was very rude and made it clear taking our orders was annoying and confusing for her. We started to order drinks after I told her what me and my roommate wanted I started to tell her how the bills would be split. Thinking it would make it easier for her. She then interrupted me by saying no not now, you can tell me after I get everyone's drinks. I was shocked at how impolite she was. I had a hard time ordering a veggie sandwich. She said I couldn't have it because it's not on the menu. I was able to order it after asking if I can get the ham sandwich with no ham. She brought the food then came back again 10 min after asking for sides. She was not happy and we could tell. I tried to pay at the cash register inside after being ignored for so long. A man walked up and said he couldn't help me. I told him my waitress hasn't come around for a while and we were ready to go. He walked away and ignored me. I was disappointed in the service and will not be returning. It was hard to tell who management was as no one there wanted to help the customers much. Save yourself the time it will take to yelp a bad review and head over to beach break! Check the reviews and see for yourself!

Good place to grab a late brunch or early lunch, especially on a nice warm afternoon. The outdoor seating area has plenty of space and a lot of umbrellas for shade. The beach isn't too far away so you can enjoy the nice breeze and people-watch along the Carlsbad Village Dr. or Carlsbad Blvd shops, venues, and cafes. Everything on the brunch menu looks good, but for the time at which we got there, I opted for their sandwich lunch special - plenty of tasty sandwiches to choose from, good soups to pair it with, and good sides like chips or fries, etc. Tasty, filling food at a good locale, at a decent price. -civilities.

Living so close to this breakfast spot I have always wanted to try it. I decided to finally try it last week with my friend. We sat outside because it was a beautiful sunny day. The place was very neat and clean and our server was very attentive. I ordered an iced tea and it tasted very funny, almost had a burnt after taste. I asked if I could just switch it out for a coffee and our waitress brought one over right away. I also ordered the eggs Benedict, which was pretty good, it was a little cold but I'm sure they were waiting for both orders to be complete before bringing it out to us. My friend ordered the pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon. Again, it was ok but nothing special. We would probably return if we were looking for a nice outside spot to eat with great service but the food was just ok.

If you are the owner or a manager of this restaurant, please read this message. This morning (12/21 @11:00) I had breakfast at your establishment. Once the server delivered my order she never came back except to deliver the bill. Of course the bill was delivered toward the end of consuming my meal so that was the first and only time I saw her. At that point I had to ask for ketchup and I was never offered a refill on coffee. When I left I took the bill to the front counter to pay as I was tired of being ignored. The young lady told me I have to deal with my server to pay. I told her that I did not want to deal with my server and she ran off to get the server. I had placed a $20 bill under the clip on the bill device and had handed that to the hostess who ran off to get the server. Because my bill was $15.50 I made a conscious decision to cut my losses and walk out. I am upset that the service was poor and even more upset that the server wins as she will just keep the change. I will spread this news as I am pretty certain you will not allow my comments to be published.

Food is okay Service is okay We sat out on the shaded patio to enjoy the pleasant cool ocean breeze. That bad part of being outside on the patio was that we found it hard to eat while waving the flies away the kept landing on our food. That was annoying. I'll sit inside if I go back next time

Location is everything which is there is ever really a buzz about this place. Right at Cbad Blvd (101) and Cbad Village Dr it attracts a ton of attention. The red English phone booth outside of it also make it seem like there's something special about it here. There's not. I have been 4 total times. Once alone, once with my wife, and twice with friends in town who were staying nearby and wanted to try it. What does breakfast start with? Coffee. It's decent at best and overpriced. All egg dishes I've had are fairly bland and nothing that a normal person can't prepare. The hash browns are pretty good. Again- I've only had breakfast so I can't comment on lunch. The thing is- you feel like you're somewhere special and hope the service and food are consistent with that feeling. Unfortunately, it's not that way. Service isn't terrible- the food isn't either. You just expect more.

Cute atmosphere, close to the beach and nice outdoor seating. The service was okay...when I walked in and waited by the "please wait to be seated" sign, three employees looked at me before anyone said anything to me. The coffee was very good, and I had the eggs Benedict. Overall they were good, but he ham didn't taste fresh and had very little flavor. I would go back though.

The Daily News Cafe was directly across the parking area from our resort we were staying at. The dining area was shabby chic farm style tables. It was like sitting down at home to eat. Very cute fun decor. Our waitress was kind and attentive. The counter staff could have been a bit more welcoming. The food was quickly brought to us hot. Yummy Omelets, hash browns, pancakes, bacon, fresh pastries. Great breakfast to start our morning. Price was a bit high for an a.m. meal, but I had no buyers remorse. I did however go to the cafe across the street the next day of our vacation in town because of it. If the meal had been a few dollars less a plate I would have returned. Busy location. So wake up a little early (8am) to avoid wait/am. Crowd.

Overpriced for average food. My kids ordered milk and juice with their meals, and the cups were only filled 3/4. No refills either. Something as minor as that can and will ruin a customer's experience.

We haven't been to Daily News Cafe for a long time because of our past experiences, but we figure we give it another try since it was on our way to the beach. The hostess immediately sat us, the waitress walked passed us 4 times until she asked if we saw the hostess before being seated. Another waitress greeted us and took our order after what seemed like 10 minutes and with no drinks. Not to mention the nonstop noise of the staff dragging plastic chairs across the ground. Another 10 minutes of wait for our food and all of it was cold, at this point we were annoyed and didn't want to bother our waitress who seemed like she was having a rough morning, and we knew this cause she told us. She never offered us condiments or a refill of coffee and water. The food is just ok, nothing special. We live 4 minutes away and because of the location I give them just 1 star, we would rather drive 10 minutes to Beach Break Cafe, sorry but we will never go back to Daily News.

I love this laid back carlsbad restaurant! The coffee is good, they have flavored creamer and good solid mugs. The food is always good and the fruit bowls are really good!! Service is carlsbad style, pretty laid back! The reason I don't give them 4 or 5 stars.... The bathroom is just too far and the patio is too crammed.

Great location and not a long wait for a outside table that we liked. Spying on other tables the food looked delicious. I made a mistake ordering the seafood crepes. They were dry and bland with a thick mayo texture sauce on the side that was tasteless. I couldn't eat more Than a couple of bites. Our server didn't come by to ask if all was ok. She simply left a ticket for us. No I didn't complain and we did pay. Won't be back.

Location and curious tourist will keep this place afloat, not the food. Denny's or 99% of truck stops across the country have better food for 1/4 of the price. Not to mention better service. My wife had the "California Omlet" which she said was "decent". I had blueberry pancakes which were basically a scoop of compote on the griddle with batter poured over it, no blueberries throughout the cake just a soggy purple circle in the middle. Hash browns were more like hash mush, soggy, grease saturated and not brown at all. Blueberry muffin looked like an individually wrapped muffin you'd get from a 7/11. My recommendation for breakfast is to walk across the street to either Cafe Elysa or The Naked Cafe for much better food and service.

This is our favorite cafe to go to when we are in Carlsbad. The tuna melts are scrumptious. We also love the blueberry pancakes. There is usually a ten to fifteen minute wait, but the outdoor waiting area is comfortable and you can people watch. The prices are reasonable and the service is great. I would definitely recommend this place.

From hostess to servers, and all who fall in between (bus boy and cooks), all was a great experience. Food is very good, menu selection is good, and location is prime. Indoor or outdoor seating is great, however I prefer outdoor because the open air and ocean breeze is just right. It is not overlooking the ocean, which is why it's perfect (not too cold or windy). Another plus side to this establishment is it is located in the heart of Carlsbad Village, so you can always follow up your great meal with a beautiful walk. Helps not feeling guilty after the delicious food you just ate! This place is legit! Even though I don't "check in" to places, I am here often with my wife and son, and can say that we have never had a problem with service or food. Enjoy!

Visiting Carlsbad from Chicago we thought this would be the cutest outdoor place to eat breakfast. Well looks can be deceiving. Given this is a tourist location, we were expecting to pay a decent amount for breakfast, and that would be fine if it was worth it. All 5 of us ordered eggs Benedict and all off the pouched eggs were hard as rocks AND had shells in them. For a place that is known for their eggs Benedict this is unacceptable! Our bill came to $90 and left us very unsatisfied.

The Daily News during my review is:Tattoos, rasta, and costumes....during lunch. Ha, what a funny place that looks so beautiful and serene from the street. A friend and I were in town recently and decided to try this place. We opted to sit inside because I like to watch the cooks as well as check out the pastries. So we walk in and a young guy with bushy curly locks, rasta vibe sat us down. Cool guy, great look for a reggae musician, but I like hosts who are cleaner cut or wear head scarves so their hair won't fall all over the food. Once seated, I noticed there was a slight off smell, and it was because they don't use bleach when they wipe down tables, just a wet dirty rag. I wiped down the table again with my napkin. But we got our drinks quickly. Next our pierced lip (or was it nose?) waitress was friendly and efficient. But my friend and I discussed why she had tattoos on the insde of her arms, unlike most people who have them on the outside. We, possibly erroneousely concluded, that she must have needle marks on the inside of her arm she wanted to hide. Without having a beer, I was feeling giddy. Next we noticed the cook with a glass of pink wine while he was cooking. Can it get funnier that this? Then, one waitress's daughters came in scarves and disguise to surprise their mom, I'm guessing being away at school... and the whole staff stopped by to greet them. Funny entertainment again. The people inside were basically toursts like us and locals from what we heard. Two 70 something women in front of me looked like sisters, but one wore a black wig and hat that made me think it was Halloween. Some obviously knew the staff. The staff was pretty chummy with each other, and then they all disappeared after we got our food. Hey, we needed extra napikins. They were gone so I had to pick it up near the bakery stand. Anyway, I had one of the $8 lunch combos... half French dip beef sandwhich and chili beef soup. The soup was vinegary and sweet, not bad. The sandwhich was not bad either, though the beef was a tad dry but tasted fine if dipped in au jus. My friend's fish and chips was decent ($10). I actually liked the fries. And the fish wasn't bad, either. The refills on the soda were prompt, the check came quickly, and returned for a card payment. Originally I wanted the chili cheese dog but it didn't look too appealing. The woman in the table next to us and her two kids loved their dogs, but it looked bland. Maybe I was wrong. I also bought one sticky bun and one cinammon roll. They were OK. To me, a really good cinammon roll has sugas or frosting and maybe nuts or raisins rolled inside the dough. Here is was just bread dough, rolled with cinammon, so the sweetness is only on the top. Overall, the food was 3.5, the service was 3.5, and cleanliness issues dropped them slightly below 3.0 stars. Oh, and the bathroom is upstairs in the hotel, so you go outside, take the elevator up, or take the stairs. And parking sucks. We had to park across the street down an alley. Oh well, I needed to mellow before driving again.

Had the seafood crepes with potatoes for breakfast. The food was cold. The potatoes were not all cooked. There was more egg in the crepe than seafood. Hollandaise-like congealed in little plastic container. Expected way more. Explained this to the manager, she said she had just come on duty. Never. Again.

The food was pretty good, I had the eggs and bacon meal and it came with a few choices of sides. The one thing that stood out the most was the bacon, it was amazing! It had a nice smokey taste to it and it really hit the spot. The wait was a bit long but we came here with no reservation for 12 people on a Sunday at 12:30 so that was our fault. Our waitress was really nice and the food was brought out at a relatively good speed. The only thing I didn't really like was how loud it got out on the patio. It's right next to a busy street so when the cars go by it gets pretty loud, especially when motorcycles go by; which seemed to happen a lot. What was wonderful though, was the fact that if you are a guest at the hotel next-door you get 10% of your meal :) Overall it was a pretty relaxing brunch ( aside from the loud vehicles) if I'm in town again I wouldn't mind going again.

DONT GO HERE!!!!! we were traveling from Los Angeles and made the stop at Daily news. What a waste of 45$$$ the service was horrible (even though there were only two other people dining). The food had no flavor. I ordered corn beef and eggs, my friend had the eggs and turky sausage. The server was 'ok' however the short chubby blond with short hair behind the cashers desk was sarcastic and angry. We left hungry, good thing there is a Starbucks across the street. I never yelp, I felt I HAD to yelp this place. I think this place should be called "the bad news"

Nothing amazing. The seasoning for the omelette was tasty and the apple juice reminded me of a yummy apple cider. But I was super disappointed that my red potatoes were barely cooked through (almost crunchy) and my daughter's croissant was soggy. The worst of all was the lackluster service quality. The staff appeared bored and seemed more interested in turning tables than making it a pleasant experience. I'm not interested in recommending this place or revisiting it.

Nice enough spot. Not a great spot for a vegan, but their food looked good. For being in California, I was surprised at the complete absence of vegan options on their menu. In fact, I wouldn't go back unless they updated their menu. What did I eat, you ask? I modified fajitas and got avocado instead of chicken. They forgot to take the cheese off my beans, so I had to send those back. The server seemed exasperated at my request for no butter, eggs or cheese in/on my food. Whatever. They have a nice patio and decent atmosphere. Baked goods looked nice in the case. Its an okay place for omnivores to get a sandwich or pancake breakfast. Its just not for me when there are so many other options nearby.

They have good service and are walking distance from the south Carlsbad state beach and Carlsbad inn beach resort where I was staying. Loved their breakfast. I ate there two days in a row. The first morning I had Apple crisp crepes. And the second morning (today) I had homemade cinnamon french toast. And the Orange juice is bomb. You have a cute view if you sit outside. I definitely recommend.

The food was decent, although my French toast was cold. I'd have sent it back, but it took about 30 minutes just to get the order in the first place. They ran out of chocolate chips and then bacon. The place is small, so no clue why the service is so slow. Don't bother, unless you are OK with waiting a while!

I was a bit worried because of the reviews but our breakfast was really good. A small 10 min wait on a Sunday morning (holiday weekend). I ordered scrambled eggs, English muffin, hashbrowns- yummy. My date ordered homemade cinnamon French toast with red potatoes and bacon- super yummy. Bacon- thick and real which is always nice. Waitress was super nice and quick.

Hadn't eaten hear for 20 years. Thought we'd try it on a foggy Tuesday morning. Four people were in line ahead of us. Sign says wait to be seated. The place was half full. Not really shabby chic; more shabby period. Dirty windows, uncleared tables. More people came in. Another customer told us that we needed to sign in. Eventually a young woman came to a counter and took names from those who were in line. More people arrived. She didn't make any effort to greet new guests as they arrived. There was no effort to explain why we were not seated. We left after 15 minutes. No one had been seated in that time and there were more than a dozen people waiting. Obviously there was no management on site. Apparently they stay in business serving captive guests from the hotel next door.

Great portions , great selection, and solid prices! Big tourist spot though, so often a wait , and tables are tightly close together! Service is great, and the outdoor area is shaded and welcoming ! Wonderful for brunch or lunch! If it wasn't such a tourist spot, I'd give it another star!

Amazing and delicious Bloody Marys!! This is the only place that I can drink a bloody mary!! I ordered a King Neptune omelete, with a blueberry muffin and hash browns!! I agree with everyone when they say that the hash browns are amazing!! Blueberry muffin was delicious, and then next time I come, I'm getting the sticky buns!!!!

Yummy food, big menu, good coffee, great service. I love that your they will put your last coffee or soda refill into a to-go cup. We eat here every Carlsbad visit. So does everyone else, apparently, because there is always a big wait. That sucks, and so does going through a maze next door to use a bathroom. And that's not cheese at the end of the maze. I checked. It was a urinal cake. And it tasted awful. I could barely eat two.

I love this place so much and I always come here with my girlfriends and have a great experience. But today was different. I ordered the eggs Benedict which was perfect and my friend Becca got a breakfast burrito. We both loved our food even tho my hash browns were kinda of mushy. But besides that the food was good...the thing I had a problem with and the reason for a two star dock is our server. Deena was absolutely rude. I don't know if this place is normally known for their customer service but we definitely didn't get good service this morning. She said about 20 words to us most of which were, 'ok' and 'mhm' and when I asked what sodas they had she SILENTLY reached over me opened my menu and pointed at them when as a SERVER she should verbalized them for me. Needless to say, I will not request deena if I decide to go back. Food gets 4 an a half stars but service gets a 2!!!

I personally really liked this place. Came here during Mother's Day so there was a bit of a wait. But everyone was great. The customer service here was amazing (Better than the place we went to just minutes prior - The Armenian Café). I ordered the avocado, cheese, and egg crepe and it was delicious with the Hollandaise Sauce. Out waitress forgot about my café mocha, but it was fine. I was given a fresh one and was able to take it to go. I would definitely recommend the café mocha. My girlfriend had the pancakes and she didn't talk the whole time so she had no complaints. Definitely worth the wait. Just bring a light snack and your patience if you're coming in on a weekend.

Left my debit card there while on vacation. Called and no one turned it in next day. The card was used at norstroms for 700 dollars. Called and asked to speak to owner and no return call. Food was ok nothing special. Patio was closed at 2pm on a fri so no good view. Bloody marry was watery and from a can with no salt or pepper added.

Stay away on weekends. My kids and I waited for an hour after being told 15mins. Come on ladies. Don't bullshit people around. Thankfully your manager was kind enough to offer a free breakfast. Food was good. Coffee overrated. Staff need to take some happy pills.

If I could give zero stars I would. Do NOT waste your money here. Food was ok at best and if you don't want to go on just my review....continue reading other reviewers! I brought a friend here that I haven't seen in 15 years and thought it would be a nice place to sit and just catch up, but the entire time we sat swatting flies, which is number one on my list of things I'm about to share. Number two, the service is the WORST I have experienced and I am a Manager of Guest Services in a major hotel chain and I would clean house. Number three which kind of goes along with number two is, when my friend ordered a beer a bus boy, I think he was, came to deliver the beer and literally slammed it down on the table and said, "here's your beer!" Oh how I wish I was embellishing but I am not! After he did he gave us an extremely dirty look, so my friend and I just looked at each other in shock. We were seriously stunned by the service and I asked her what we did that made him so angry because we never spoke a word to him. So we got a good laugh because really...what else can you do but laugh about it! Oh, did I mention that when we first sat down it was at least 10-15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us? One lady walked by and said she would be right with us, then never came back or looked at us again, then another girl after at least 10 minutes came and took our drink order. Then...beer guy! Ok now to continue after beer/busboy....the busboy/man continued walking by us many times and each time gave us very dirty looks. Each time we would chuckle but then we noticed that each server (whom I might add never came back to ask how everything was once our food was delivered) there seemed to either be tired or very unhappy in their jobs because they had no wow factor or the bubbly personality that should be found in any hospitality industry job. They were there for a paycheck and it showed! Very sad for the owners and/or managers, unless that is the root of the issues. I am sure they do great business on the poor unsuspecting tourist who don't know any better. Since I do work with tourist and in a hotel all day every day...I will make them aware this would not be a place to put on their list of dining options. Needless to say, I will never return to this restaurant. I don't like to give bad reviews as you can see by my profile but I just could not let this go. My biggest concern now is, why has the health department not visited this place to fine them for all the flies? I had napkins placed on my food and drink between bites so as not to have a swarm. It was truly ridiculous and management could have at least bought fly traps/strips or something to combat this problem. I hope this helps your dining selection!

I came here with my parents on Memorial Day 5/26/14. We waited about 50-60 minutes to sit outside on the patio when they said it would be about half an hour, not an hour. Our server Tera was very nice and not over bearing or inattentive. The hashbrowns unfortunately we're not what other yelp reviews claimed. Both mine and my mom's were undercooked. I really love crispy hashbrowns and these where totally soft and mushy. The rest of the food was okay. Not sure if I would come back on a busy day.

The Hubs and I are taking an anni-staycay in Carlsbad - my gift to him for being the best a Hubs can be. So we landed at the Daily News Café for breakfast because some of the reviews here said a few magic words and we had to find out for ourselves why others had such low opinions of the place. Admittedly, we didn't have to wait an hour or more to be seated- it's a Tuesday and things are slow at 9 a.m. at this eatery, apparently. So if you're just beginning to explore the idea of the Daily News Café, consider the time of day and day of week. I understand from the server that the wait times can be verrrrrrrrrrry long. Robyn was our server and she was, in my opinion, gracious and attentive. She didn't hover, she just took care of us. I had the King Neptune omelet, the Hubs had a build-your-own. Both omelets were crafted by a cook who understands the balance of flavors. Not too much cheese, just enough sour cream, etc. I chose the hash browns, he had the fruit. I was almost sorry I didn't get the fruit because it was luscious and fresh looking... but my hash browns were THE perfect amount of crispy outside and tender inside, so I didn't feel too bad. I had the Mimosa, he had straight OJ (he drove). The OJ is freshly squeezed, so if you expect a sweet, cloying orange juice like substance in your champagne, you don't want the Mimosa from DNC - freshly squeezed is a completely different and much lighter flavor. Personally, I'm a fan of the freshly squeezed OJ as it didn't overpower the taste of the champagne. Finally, I had the blueberry muffin, he had the wheat toast. I thought the muffin *looked* a little funny on the outside, but it didn't taste funny at all - it was heavenly. I finished with a huge mug of coffee. It was so windy outside, we couldn't dine on the veranda, which was a shame, but we had fun just the same. Some cool historic artifacts line shelves in the indoor eating space and we enjoyed talking about some of those. When we finished, I asked Robyn for a container for my leftovers and she not only refilled my coffee mug - but she also asked if I'd like a cup to take my coffee with me. I really love a server who pays attention and anticipates the needs of her guests. She rates a sixth star which, sadly, Yelp does not enable me to display in her honor. So summing up - if you have to wait, believe me when I say it's worth it. If you can, go when the wait times are minimal and just relax with a Mimosa and soak in the friendly vibe of this Carlsbad treasure.

This cafe is pretty much the standard beachy casual cafe in a cute little building. I enjoyed that the outside seating was covered well, but still had a nice breeze. The good was ready pretty fast and looked really good, but was a bit bland. I ordered the French dip which didn't have that much meat in it and lacked flavor. My bf had the Bonsai burger which he said was good. Overall, the atmosphere was nice and the people working were very pleasant.

Came here for breakfast early in the morning with my husband. One would think the service would actually be good because there were maybe 8 tables, but no. The food was awful as well. The blueberry muffin was hard and not warm, and my eggs weren't cooked as ordered. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy & stated they tasted like "cream on a sponge" lol so you can only imagine. And don't bother sitting outside unless you want to be swatting flies away during your entire meal. Definitely a disappointment.

This morning I spent $32 feeding breakfast to the large number of flies who live and eat inside the The Daily News Cafe. The food wasn't very good to begin with, but it was rendered inedible the flies, they clearly don't care what they eat. My family does. We won't be back.

I live in Carlsbad and usually recommend this place to out-of-towners. Can't beat the location and the outdoor seating is great. I usually get the crepes and today we had seafood crepe, club sandwich, and chicken salad sandwich. All were enjoyed and the fruit plate had all fresh fruit and a good variety. I think the food quality, quantity, and prices are decent. You might have to wait for table or service could be slow, but you're here to relax and enjoy so get over it. This place is a huge step up from Broken Yolk so definitely go here for breakfast. Board and Brew probably has better sandwiches and they are just a block away, so try something different on the menu here. I've always had a good experience with the crepes and you can't get those too many places.

Before we headed home from our weekend in Carlsbad we decided to have breakfast here this morning. We got seated right away and our drink order was taken. The coffee was very good and fresh. The wife ordered the cinnamon bread French toast with fresh fruit. I decided to try the corned beef hash with eggs & hash browns. I also chose a biscuit which was homemade and flaky. Both meals were very good. Yes we would order them again. The only real negative for me was the lack of attention for coffee refills. She came by once when our cups were 3-quarters full and never came by again. The place can get busy on the weekends so don't be surprised if you have to wait.

We really wanted to like this place. its cozy and quaint and has a great outdoor seating area that is in shade in the afternoon. Service was good, but they weren't too busy by the time we got there (3PM). The food and coffee however, leave much to be desired. Very bland fajitas (I know, why order Mexican food at a place like this) and a tuna sandwich with hard, stale bread. Coffees were not too tasty either. Overall the food will prevent us from coming again. Too bad... really like these kind of quaint places on the beach.

I'm a regular at Daily News for the past 20 years. Yes 20 years! I loved this place and ordered the same thing every time I went there: the "Home on the Range" omelet. This place had, hands-down, the best omelet and the best value. Back then I believe this omelet was about $6. Forward to July 2014... this place has really gone down. They've become like every other tourist-centric restaurant that doesn't care about the quality of the food they serve because they serve it to tourists who won't be back. So the eggs were burned, there was hardly any cheese in the omelet, and the bell peppers were soggy, soft and limp. On top of that it cost $13, twice what it used to. Ok, I understand inflation and the cost of doing business, no problem, but if you're going to charge me that much for an omelet then at least make it a good one. So Daily News, you don't care about quality anymore? Fine. You don't care about your regulars who frequented your business and provided you with income during the off-season? Fine. We can play the same. It was nice while it lasted, you will never see this regular again! One last note, I decided to write this post after several dining experiences, not just one. I kept making excuses for them, like they were too busy, or they had a replacement cook, or something, but no more excuses... I'm done. Thanks for the memories of delicious food, that's why you get 2 stars instead of 1.

Being a waitress myself, my expectations for my dining experiences is much higher than your average customer. But I normally go easy on the reviews. I really want to like the place. I very much so enjoyed breakfast here but service... Not so much. Hostess was rude and didn't greet and or smile. Not only did it take the lady server about 10 minutes to greet us, but an additional 5-10 minutes for drinks. As most people are super understanding, like myself if you're busy, but this is when you talk to your customers and let us known you're a little slammed and no issues well understand. Instead she took our order with attitude, wasn't personable, didn't check back, and didn't refill our drinks... Why? It's your job. Besides the crowded, tight squeezed indoor dining area, obnoxiously loud chairs constantly being dragged and lousy service, I would really like this place. Recommendations: sit outside :) Hopefully next time I try this place out management will care a little more about their choice of employees.

Good food in a good location near the beach in Carlsbad. My wife and I ate here on Easter (20 April 14) and were very satisfied. There as a 15-20 minute wait, were seated a clean table and the service was good. Great little beach-side cafe. Would definitely return.

The hubby & I stayed at the Carlsbad Inn (literally right behind this restaurant) so we walked over for breakfast one morning during our honeymoon. We opted to sit outside (even though there seems to be constant road work happening outside our hotel right now.. but the jackhammers etc weren't horribly distracting - and it's not the restaurants fault anyway.. so I digress). They have a good sized patio, some covered seats, some sunny to chose from. They also have a small selection of indoor seats if that is your preference. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. We started with a cinnamon roll.. and it was just ok. After that I ordered a cheese omelet with a side of hash browns and it came with a toasted blueberry muffin (love that, because I hate toast!). The hubby got pancakes and bacon. My omelet was pretty good - just cheesy enough. I wasn't a fan of the hash browns but my muffin was warm and delicious. The hubby said his pancakes were okay - but he couldn't stop raving about the bacon. He even went so far as to call it "possibly the best bacon I've ever had"... and he's had a lot of bacon. so that says something. All in all service was fast, the bus boys were on point cleaning off our table once we finished, refills were brought out promptly and the check wasn't outrageous. We would def go back if we were in the area again.

We were looking for a place for lunch where our dog was welcome. This place has some tables on the sidewalk and were very welcoming to our dog - brought out her own water, talked to her, etc. As if that wasn't enough we found a great menu variety with lots of breakfast and lunch choices. My wife had the lobster roll and said it was the best sandwich she had ever had. I had a fantastic burger. The food was excellent, the service was great. We will definitely go back. Oh, and our dog loved it too.

Super cute patio to get breakfast on a beautiful morning! My boyfriend got the chili cheese burger which was huge and delicious! And I got the chili cheese omelette. Hard to say anything bad about homemade chili! Delicious! And our server ROBIN was so sweet and very attentive!!! A great start to our vacation! Definitely coming back!

I have been here a few times, and I love that is near the coast and you can sit outside. They are dog friendly, however you can't sit in the patio in the restaurant, you have to sit outside the restaurant patio with your pooches. I think it is a good place for breakfast, and okay place for lunch just based on the selection. The service has been pretty good, and the prices are pretty reasonable.

We go here on some Sundays and it's always packed no matter what season it is. It could be winter or summer, it doesn't matter. People love this place even if it's blistering hot or bone chilling cold. There is indoor seating but only a few and why sit inside when you can enjoy San Diego weather? I almost gave the Daily News Cafe a three star rating only because there could be a wait of 30 minutes or more to sit down. But that's not fair because they do everything else well. The food is great, service is always fast and excellent once you sit down. The service definitely deserves at least 4 stars because for how busy it is, the servers are doing a really great job of getting to everyone. There might be a few minutes of wait to refill a drink but hey, the servers are not superhumans. We have never been disappointed with the food here and we have wished a few times that we lived closer, especially for the location. It could be a great weekend to just stroll around after having breakfast. We love their french toast and my fiancee loves their omelette and fruits the most. Families with children seem to love this place as well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... this place has the dang best eggs florentine EVER!!! The English Muffin underneath even tastes better. The eggs are perfectly poached, and they taste like farm fresh eggs, plump with a very yellow yolk. Today they had almond flavored coffee which was delicious. Lucy Y . doesn't usually eat her hash browns, so I got to have fruit with my eggs and also most of her hash browns. Very good hash browns, very browned and crunchy on top, well cooked underneath. Just a very pleasant place to have breakfast, and it was a beautiful day down here in paradise.

I have been here for breakfast a few times and was never impressed with the service. After the last time we went for breakfast I will not ever be comming back. The service is officially a joke. It's so rediculously slow, I had to repeat myself to my server so many times, they don't clean up the table, it was honestly probably the worst service at a restaurant I have ever received, i was so frustrated sitting there trying not to yell at the staff and I was not in a good mood when I left. I don't recommend this place to anyone.

We stopped in on our last morning in Carlsbad. The patio seating was nice on a beautiful day. It is a great location for people watching. Service was prompt and friendly. My coffee cup stayed full! I had the Breakfast Burrito-- scrambled eggs with bacon, Jack & Cheddar cheese and Ranchero Sauce served with some pretty decent fried potatoes. It was excellent. All in all, a very good experience. I'd suggest you get there early on the weekend or be prepared to wait.

Came here for an early breakfast while in town for work. The eggs were obviously scrambled in the pan (instead of beaten before put in pan)- yuck. Turkey sausage was definitely out of a box- yuck. Blueberry muffin was NOT freshly made although it was warm- not sure why everyone gives this place more than a star or two. The tea was good and hot and the server was nice. Nice outdoor patio. Hence the 2 stars- but I am being nice. Will not recommend to locals and definitely won't come back tomorrow despite its perfect location to where I'm staying.

I come to Carlsbad often with my wife. Yesterday 2-15-2015 ate at Daily News. Horrible place to eat. Bad service, waitress was older Hispanic lady, rude and incompetent waitress. Food was horrible. Never will I return to this restaurant. On the other hand, across the street, we dined at Jay's Gourmet Restaurant, excellent choice. Great service, food was surperb!

Went there to have lunch. Nice place directly in the center of Carlsbad. Friendly personal and a lot of choice concerning breakfast. There were as well some menues for lunch but it seems to be specialzed for breakfast. We didn't have to wait long until we got our meal and it tasted good.

OK I'm sorry but that was really quite terrible food-wise, and my family can tell you I am VERY easy to please when it comes to food. You really have to work at it to screw up eggs, potatoes and an English muffin, but every one of those items had issues. The eggs were slightly undercooked, the potatoes were very undercooked, and the muffin was stiff and overcooked. I know, I know, I should've sent it back right away, but I hadn't discovered all the issues yet when the waitress first checked on me, and I didn't feel like waiting another 20 minutes for a meal that should take no more than 5 minutes to make. The waitress was nice, no problem with her really, but we waited about 15 min. for a table. No big deal there, but then I watched as people waited much longer than that when there were several tables empty. This place does not have their stuff together. Tons of options around here, pick one of them.

Ate here today on our ride up the coast. I had the Neptune omelet which has crab & shrimp in it. It was so yummy. My husband got the Create Your Omelet so of course he loved it. We also split an order of the cinnamon bread French toast. We got some muffins to go too. The mimosas were great & the coffee was good & strong. We will definitely have to go back.

Contacted the owner , he apologized for the inconvenience that his staff had caused. Gave me a full refund and a coupon to come back and have breakfast free if charge. Thank you! That made up for the wrong food order, vs 50% off my next breakfast.

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BREAKFAST PLACE IN CARLSBAD! This cute breakfast joint offers all of my favorite classic breakfasts! My favorites are the french toast, californian omelet and the eggs Benedict! Most places cannot correctly poach an egg for a Benedict but the DNC really has it down! I highly recommend taking some cinnamon rolls home with you as a little treat for later! Love this place and Carlsbad is so lucky to have them!

A girlfriend and I had lunch here on Saturday (3/8/14) while visiting California. We were meeting a friend here and wanted a nice place to sit and enjoy the beautiful weather. We got there at about 1pm. We were greeted and sat by the hostess. We didn't get greeted by the waitress until about 10 minutes after we were sat. We ordered water and told her that we had someone joining us. She dropped off the waters and said that she would keep a look out for our friend. After this we didn't see the waitress for about 20 to 25 minutes. We asked another server to find out where our waitress was. She finally came and took our orders. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich with a side salad and my friend did as well. Our other friend ordered the turkey club with fries. The food was good. The only problem was how long we waited for our waitress.

Good but not great. Eggs Benedict favorite. Great seating and ambience. Service was ok, felt hurried. One thing about a great breakfast place - always serve great coffee and fresh OJ. OJ wasn't. Coffee ok. Will come again when in Carlsbad. Love the location.

DO NOT COME HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't let the nice location fool you!! If I could give this place zero stars I would! This place is absolutely overpriced and good is soooooo terrible!!! It has no flavor and is never cooked right! And according to the manager "They don't do refunds". This place took our hard earned money $22 for something I could have got for $5 at Denny's. The food was so terrible no flavor at all and the fruit was mushy, old looking and too watery! As a business owner myself I would have expected more quality service from this place especially with it being in Carlsbad! My first and last time at this place will NOT be going back and I hope that this post helps! Don't let the pictures and location fool you!

Absolutely great spot for breakfast. My wife niece, son & and I stopped by or on our way back home from Legoland. I had the croissant French toast which was amazing! My wife had yummy oatmeal and the BEST sticky bun than I've ever had. My son had a pancake which was okay and my niece had a breakfast burrito which is really really good but skimpy on the filling. Definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. 4 stars for so so pancakes and skimpy burritos

I've been here a few times and have not had a bad experience. I have tried the cinnamon French toast, california omelet, and apple crepes. All were delicious. I will say the service is a little slower but nothing I worry about. I really thought the crepes were going to be too sweet but they had a good balance. I just wish they had more whip cream.

This is the first time I have ever Yelped anything. I just wanted to make mention of it because I found it unbelievable that this place is still in business. We had a late lunch.. around 3 p.m on a Thursday and I was served the worst hashbrowns ever. It was inedible. I think it was leftover from another persons plate.. then it sat around all day. I can't believe they would serve this to a human being and expect to stay in business. Go elsewhere because you will be disappointed. I don't know where the positive reviews for this place is coming from.

I will give the food a 4-5 but I have to give the location as in the patio area, tables, chairs, etc a 2-3. I will say I had the chef salad and it was delicious, my friends had sandwiches and snacks and the food was delicious. I also love diet coke so it was great to get a nice large soda! However , from the outside it looked super cute, we are new to the Carlsbad area and thought it looked like a really nice place to get some breakfast/lunch food. However the patio really needs a remodel, a good paint, new tables and chairs, it was clean just not as nice and cute on the inside as it looks from the outside.

The best part of the restaurant was the server-- what a friendly guy. My husband's red potatoes were not cooked, my hash browns and eggs were cold, and the pancake was dense instead of fluffy. Oh, and my coffee was so burned. Disappointing since the place looked so cute.

  • John A.

Underseasoned and overcooked. Expensive. I wish the disengaged staff spent less time trying to clear my dishes (while we were still eating!), and more time refilling the $2.40 cup of coffee. I should have read the reviews prior to experiencing it.

Beautiful colorful garden location, clean and well appointed but, after a lunch and a breakfast, we found mediocre to poor food. Nothing special on any menu. All of it over priced. Although it is busy, that seems testament to the great location and to even worse food in surrounding eateries. Overall, Carlsbad has the worst food in any town that I've been. I've been to many. One example of the poor food at Daily News Cafe: our "sauteed red potatoes" were hard and under cooked. We didn't eat them. When we asked for cooked replacements, we were given the same under cooked potatoes, obviously microwaved (which is not sauteed), sprinkled with paprika. Small pieces mushy and scalding and everything else still hard and under cooked. We left them again. The waitress said nothing when she saw the second servings uneaten. Of course, no adjustment was made to the $36 bill. (Breakfast for two.) Service was good, other than our waitress' poor follow-up, but too many grungy looking folks with tats. Tattoos on servers is a real turn-off. The bus staff is really the high point of service; they are friendly, engaging and on top of everything. This cafe is not a place worth another visit.

Stopped for breakfast with a coupon. Was disappointed in the breakfast. The hashbrowns were slightly crisp but the inside was mashed potato, The specisl omlet described was supposed to include kamalti olives, could not find any. Lots of better breakfast places around.with better value.

2.5... Came here for breakfast. The wait time for a table was about 15 mins on a Sat morning at 9a. Not too bad of a wait. I soaked in the baked goods and decided on a chocolate chip muffin to go. We sat on the patio, ordered coffees and omelets. I opted for the Popeye Omelet (egg whites) and added avo ($11). Comes with 2 small sides - hash browns and biscuit. I did take half my entree home, but nothing notable with the food. The service was good for the most part, but the server did forget to bring extra napkins per my request and I had to ask for a coffee topper. You can't beat the patio seating. Great for people watching and soaking in the Cali sun. Awesome that the beach is a few steps away - close enough to walk off your breakfast/brunch. ======================================== O and I saw my old school friend/running partner/fellowYelp Eliter here also... Holla!!!

Ehhh, I don't know. Nothing special but I suspect the location draws in the crowds, especially tourists. We had sandwiches and salads and they were tasty, but nothing unique or OMG special about them. Service was attentive and friendly and they were able to keep our drinks full on a hot summer day. I was disappointed a bit with the seating. It was too hot inside to sit outside but barely cooler outside. I think I saw an add that touts ocean breezes on their patio, but with the glass partitions and the eastward facing patio I didn't get any breeze. I would go back if I was with a group of people that wanted to go but otherwise "been there, done that."

Been to Daily News Cafe before. This time a complete disappointment. Went on a Thursday about 10.30 and a 30 minute wait. Ordered and food took another 30 min to arrive. Ordered an omelet, it was cooked well done (dead) with red potatoes and there no red in sight as the potatoes were white. The potatoes had NO seasoning or veges etc. When I asked about the potatoes the waitress insisted they were red but no way possible. Will not go here again. Also overpriced!!!!!!

The other day, I was back here waiting to meet Laura D for breakfast, when I spotted a guy that works here that had this great energy about him. He's positive, friendly, and attentive, definitely the kind of energy I'd want to come across anywhere I went. In my head, I thought that he was awesome server Leo, who had waited on us a few weeks before. But I was wrong. And it confused me!! This wasn't Leo - this was TONY! How could I have made such a mistake? Well, at first I blamed my asian squinty-eyed-ness. Then I realized the REAL reason I made this error: It's not because Leo and Tony are both around the same-ish age, and they're dark-haired guys, no. It's because they stick out to me as the personalities here with the lightest and most positive energies, the kindest eyes and the most attentive and gracious demeanors. These guys know something about living positive lives, and it shows in every move they make! Don't get me wrong - there are other servers here who are awesome too! Robin and Kim are always on top of their game, and make us feel right at home every single time. You'll get my meaning if you come here and meet Tony or Leo. There's just something different about them - it seems like it comes from the light way they approach life. So come here, sit out on the airy patio, or at one of the (dog friendly!) sunny tables in front, and enjoy the breakfast yummies that we have come to love: Eggs Florentine Eggs Benedict Popeye Omelette Don't forget their awesome breakfast potatoes (the ones I only take a bite of, because I avoid carbs) or their yummy biscuits (the ones I actually do eat even though I avoid carbs!), and their super fresh fruit salad (these come with breakfast dishes). Remember that they serve wine and beer, and lunch and dinner too. And make sure you say hi to Tony and Leo for me! : D

Over all no news here. If it wasn't for the patio and good location to people watch I would give it one star. I ordered the BLT and the bread wasn't toasted so the bottom was soggy. The Cesar salad came with a wilted tomato on top, could have been a dull knife or an old tomato. My gf ordered an omelet which looked bland, She wasn't a fan. We just moved here so thought it mush be good for how busy it is, maybe just tourists that don't know where else to go. Being locale I wouldn't come back. Our meals were basic and they were not good, Not sure what the hype about the bloody mary is, very basic. Buy tomato juice, vodka, a celery stick and a lime, that is all it is. No special ingredients involved.

Cute brunch place in Carlsbad. They have lots of outdoor patio seating, which is perfect on a sunny day! Unfortunately, I went on a rare gloomy San Diego day. Still, they had heat lamps. Brunch was pretty solid, albeit, they could give a bit more in terms of portion size, for your dollar. I ordered the California omelette with avocado, tomatos and cheese. It was really good, but after I finished, I wasn't stuffed. And it was 10.95! I got a side of fruit and a biscuit with it too. Our server was nice, he later introduced himself as Stephen, and we overheard him talking with someone else that he was the owner's son. Nice guy and friendly neighborhood brunch spot. Rating = 3.5. I would come back if I were in the area!

I'm mixed about this location. I stopped in for breakfast on a late Tuesday morning. I sat on the patio, which was nearly empty, but all the tables I saw were not...dirty, so much..just not clean. There weren't any plates there, but they sure could have used a wipe. I seated myself and received a menu right away, but the service was still slow throughout. I ordered a croissant sandwhich, which had sausage, eggs, and cheese on a croissant, and hash browns. I also ordered a Diet Pepsi. The food came relatively quickly...but then I didn't see my waitress for a very, very long time. The busboy actually came by, saw my soda was empty, and refilled it. I was on my way to LA and I kind of wanted to leave, so I had my credit card sitting ostentatiously on the edge of the table...but it sat and sat and sat. Eventually the waitress came by and took it and I was able to pay and leave. During this time, I observed that several people came to the establishment and sat on the patio, receiving just about the equal attention that I did. The food itself was alright. Nothing spectacular. The croissant was a bit stale, I thought, and the side of hash browns wasn't really that good at all, but I didn't really order it for that. The croissant sandwhich was, however, quite huge and came out extremely hot. The eggs, cheese, and sausage on top were very well done, so it wasn't bad. It just wasn't anything special. I do not see myself coming by here again. It just didn't stand out and there are plenty of other places in this trendy sea-side town that would take my attention first.

Came here for an early lunch on a Saturday and the breakfast crowd that ALWAYS seems to be out on the patio eating was slimmed down so we were seated right away. Maybe this place is better for breakfast (hence why there is always a crowd), but I really wasn't very impressed with the lunch at all. I ordered a half sandwich and a cup of soup (split pea)...and while everything came out in a timely manner and nothing was really WRONG with the food, it was just really unmemorable. I would give this place another chance for breakfast, but there are definitely much better options in the village for lunch. At least it wasn't overpriced.

This is a beautiful place to sit and people watch. The food was good. Nothing great or special, but not bad. A little pricy, but the coffee was good and the atmosphere nice. We had a nice seat on the enclosed patio area, would have been nice to sit and chat awhile but they seemed a little rushy that day. All-in-all I'd go back and give it a second try.

Just had breakfast if that's what you call it. We had huevos rancheros, recommended by the waitress Deena, who wasn't only wrong, but very unfriendly. Also had bacon and eggs with side of biscuit and gravy. Biscuits were hard and bacon soft and chewy. Must stay busy from out of towners staying at the hotel.

For me it was ok. It convenient to the hotel and beach but parking is not the great . It's a great location for everything. Our server was very friendly and nice. He was very attentive. We spent nearly $90 for 4 meals. Kind of pricy.

The food was pretty good but the service was not. We waited awhile for our server to greet us.. Which is understandable if it's busy... but when she finally did come to our table she didn't even say hello.. Just immediately asked what we wanted to drink. We asked for 2 waters and a cappuccino. She came back about 10 minutes later with the waters and then asked me again if I wanted a cappuccino. The table next to us sat down at the same time and they waited even longer then we did to get their food. After they waited almost 30 min for their food, the server came back and asked them to repeat their entire order again. After their food finally came, the little boy didn't receive his pancakes until the rest of the family was almost done eating. My husband ordered a side of eggs which she forgot to bring him but when he asked her about them she seemed annoyed he asked. We waited about 10 min for our check and when we got it, it was the wrong check and she said someone else must have grabbed ours... Then we waited another 10 min while she reprinted ours. The employees seem unhappy to work their and made us feel like we were inconveniencing them. The place is huge and in a great location but they need to step up their customer service if they want to be successful. I would not come back here again.

This was a decent breakfast but I just can't give it 4 stars because there are so many breakfast spots in the area that are much better, like Beachgrass Cafe, Naked Cafe, Ki's, or Claire's to name a few. (Plus it wasn't very clean on the patio). I ordered my go-to when I don't know what to get: the eggs benedict, add avocado. It was actually pretty good, but nothing special. This place would be a fine choice if you're nearby but I won't drive the extra few miles up the coast again just to eat here.

My husband and I walked around before finally settling on eating breakfast here while staying next door at the Carlsbad Inn. We were seated immediately and then ignored. We chose to sit outdoors, there were waiters and waitresses everywhere and very few patrons yet no one could be bothered to take our order. I would have gotten up and left if I wasn't really hungry! When I finally called a waitress over she apologized for the wait. I ordered a fruit parfait and a bagel. The fruit was fresh and the bagel was just a bagel. The orange juice was really good but not worth the wait! I had cold pizza from Pizza Port for breakfast the next day. It was yummy and ready when I was!

My wife and I just love this place for lunch or brunch. You do have to be careful about sitting in the sun if you're outside but get a table with some shade and order up the lobster/shrimp salad or a good omelet and enjoy. Even when they are busy I have found the staff to be courteous, even fun!

Hostess staff is completely incompetent. Tons of open tables yet they seat people at a rate of one every 5 minutes. Once we were finally seated then service and good was ok... Not great but not bad either. Overall a disappointing experience.

My daughter and I were visiting Carlsbad this weekend and stopped in here for lunch. Not good! We ordered the Calamari sandwich and chicken sandwich - both were dry, no seasoning and just no flavor. The calamari was on special and it was clearly frozen. Interestingly, we went to a local Mexican restaurant that night for dinner and I once again ordered Calamari - it was fresh, flavorful and not chewy. I will say that many around us were having breakfast and seemed very happy. Maybe this is just a better breakfast spot. But the real issue was a server. Not ours! Our server (a Robert Downey Junior look-a-like) was pleasant and helpful. Sadly, many of his fellow servers were dressed very poorly, many in oversized, boxers-showing, basketball shorts and dirty, raggy t-shirts. I get this is a beach town and casual is completely acceptable...but, dirty and sloppy is really unnecessary. Again, our server was wearing nicer plaid shorts, still trendy, just not sloppy or dirty. So clearly, it can be done! The server in question was a tall young guy who consistently walked out from the back (presumedly the kitchen) with a very full mouth of food! Twice we saw him walk up to tables and proceed to hold a conversation with visibly chewed food in his mouth. He had so much food in his mouth, his cheek was pushed outward like a chipmunk storing for the winter! Also, at one point, he was chewing his food then wiped his mouth with his fingers, grabbed a water pitcher and proceeded to grab several glasses to refill - with the hand he just wiped his mouth! Really? I'm giving this 2-stars for two reasons. Breakfast looked good and our server was a good guy.

Came here last week for breakfast since I have been off for the week and I can only take breakfast sandwiches for so long. I had the breakfast omelet with potatoes. The omelet was standard fare, and the potatoes, while under cooked were very tasty. Service was ok, as I had to flag the waitress down for coffee refills. The setting is nice though, as it is right on the corner of Carlsbad Village and PCH. So if you are driving through and are looking a cafe for breakfast within walking distance of the beach, this place should be able to take care of your eggs and potatoes itch. While I do prefer some of the other local cafes, this place is ok.

Great location. Decenet breakfast, you can get better food for same money but the area will not be as nice

another restaurant that attracts over-weight Americans by serving large portions, the quantity instead of enough quality routine. The hash browns weren't fully cooked through, one would expect crispy hash browns, but ours were like mashed potatoes for the most part. Service reminded me of Denny's, guess they picked up a few unemployed surfer guys off the street, what every happened to clean neat presentable attire?

Eek, methinks not is correct. The service was poor and the food even more. I was hesitant about it, but the wife wanted to go and give it a try. It looked larger, but not it was tight quarters, which wasn't so much a problem just uncomfortable. Mainly the food was the disappointment. I can handle poor service, but when the staple of your business is lacking, I will have to pass. In short, the coffee tasted old for 'breakfast hour' and the Ranchero was served on the colder side and lacked in seasoning.

I'm here visiting from Dallas and this place was awesome! I loved the ambience and we sat outside on the patio, the sun was shining and it was just perfect. Our server Steve was so attentive and made sure everything was cooked how we asked. Our waters were never empty and he was quite the host. Best lunch I've had in a long time! I will definitely be back :)

I was kind of disappointed with Daily News Cafe. For such a prime location, you would think they would spruce their menu up a bit or something. It was just your average menu..pancakes, eggs, toast, sandwiches, etc. And PRICY too, which is annoying. So, I got some blueberry pancakes because I watched Pulp Fiction the night before and you know the part where Butch's European girlfriend is going on and on about blueberry pancakes? Yeah, they just sounded so good. So I ordered them. And they were okay. Clearly the kitchen used frozen blueberries which is not cool. Especially when they're in season and I'm paying like 9 dollars or something for some pancakes. My boyfriend got scrambled eggs. He's a chef, so he was bothered by the fact that they didn't whisk the eggs first before scrambling them. I mean, whatever. Not a big deal, just kind of lazy. Service was good, although my waitress was almost robotic...it was like she was reading from a teleprompter or something.

I have to admit that I was distracted by my conversation today, I was pretty absorbed with my good friends. However, I give it a solid 3 stars because the food was good. Not incredible like I can't find this food anywhere else, but solidly good food. I had the California omelet and I think the avocado was fresh and tasty. I liked the open air seating was great, would be better facing the water siince we were so close though :) They should have designed it that way. Our waitress was nice and attentive. I do have to give extra props for some yummy yet non-greasy hash browns. Those are not easy to come by. Thumbs up for that. :)

The atomosphere and surroundings were amazing, outside at the beach ... service not to bad, very friendly but not so good at checking on needs. The food .. not so good ... very disappointed. Thinking, I am out the ocean, lets have something w seafood. bad idea. Ordered a shrimp and crab omelet, the worst I have ever eaten. They used the tiny shrimp and very little crab, if any. Melted clumps of cheese in scrambled eggs, and served it dry, no cheese or sauce over the top, very sad for the location. Ordered a caffe latte and had an additional 75 cent charge for syrup.. I visit Bakersfield on occasion for business and there is a restaurant that has an amazing seafood omelets with large shrimp and green onion and folded with melted cheese inside. Then pour a white sauce over the top. Probably not very healthy, lol, but not ordered very often and Oh so Good. Have never been able to eat the entire thing.. All that for less money. Wont be going back to the Daily News Cafe.

Basic breakfast and it was not good! Potatoes were cold & hash browns tasted odd & eggs over cooked & greasy!

A-OK is a perfect description for Daily News Cafe. It is a breakfast/lunch cafe, I believe they close at 4pm. Nothing extraordinary, basic menu and decent prices. We stayed at the Carlsbad Inn (not impressed, see my review on it) so we ate at this restaurant 3 times during our stay. My first breakfast was the Neptune's omelet, it sounded so yummy but was very bland, hash browns were awesome though! The next day I ordered the Eggs Benedict and they were awesome! Tried the red potatoes this time and they were good, but I enjoyed the has browns better. The orange juice is fresh squeezed and on the day I had it, it was too sour for me. I also tried lunch, but again it was basic, nothing special, it was fine. Sunday morning wait at about 9:30 am was 40 minutes, but shortly after we were seated it was basically down to a 5 minute wait. So they wait times can be hit or miss.

Great location, close to the beach, and smiling servers that love to make mimosas. The food is always great(but not a big fan of their biscuits and gravy), especially their house potatoes and hash browns. The prices are about what you would expect considering the proximity to all of the tourist housing, but nothing crazy. Loses a star because service can sometimes be slow, especially if you are there for some hangover medicine and they are resetting for lunch. Not a big deal though, because it is always enjoyable to sit out on the patio drinking your mimosas.

Well to start the building looks welcoming. We sat outside cuz it was a beautiful day. To begin the guy serving water and coffee was walking around with his underwear hanging out of his shorts it actually looked like he was drunk and he hadn't showered in days his smell spoke for its self. The veggies on my dish where not washed and the fruit looked really bad as if it had been siting in a container for days. When I told the waitress she pretty much ignored me and did nothing about it. But no I don't recommend this place at all serviced sucked and there was nothing that would make me go back, except the demolition of the place.

Yum. Blueberry muffins (and whatever else is in the bakery case) is worth the trip with a glass of milk or cup o' coffee. On nice days, the patio is the place to be. Menu selections are yummy and fairly priced. Breakfast is "da bomb" and lunch is pretty good, too. Best of all, Entertainment.com has a BOGO (up to $11).

This is a hidden treasure in Carlsbad for breakfast and lunch. The breakfast burrito is excellent and the burgers/fries are really delicious. Food is fast and the staff is friendly. The baked goods look low profile, but don't be fooled. They are tasty.

Just not worth the wait. Have had better eggs made by toddlers.

3.5 stars from me. Cute little joint right up the block from the beach. My lobster roll wasn't too heavy on the mayo and the fruit was really good. My only gripe is the amount of flies buzzing around inside. Drove me crazy.

Coffee was ok, food was cold and gross. Our server was horrible and only came by once to give coffee. Corn beef and hash was ground up into a gritty paste. Biscuits and gravy we're cold and stale. Bad experience won't be back!

The food wasn't horrible. It was not great. Do not go when they busy. Poor service, scroungy looking help, very young staff. I would not return and I'm a local and easily pleased usually.

We waited 25 minutes to be sat. It was another 15 for food that ended up being 'meh.' I can't say anything too awful about this place, but I can't say too much good about it either. Service wasn't bad but not really good. The seafood omelet was overcooked. The huevos rancheros were mediocre at best. Good thing they have Chalula because it saved the meal. Overall, mediocre food, so so service and not worth the wait.

While cruising around looking for a place to live in Carlsbad we eventually needed to break for some grub and this place looked charming. It seemed like a quaint little promising place. The menu had lots of comments and some cute names for things and I quickly got excited. Well, although everything looked pretty yummy I must say I was fairly disappointed and I believe the fiance would agree. He had the breakfast burrito and I had the cheesy dog. Both looked delicious but both fell short and just didn't have much flavor. The service was good and friendly but the food was definitely a let down and probably wouldn't go back.
