Had the bento box and everything was below average. While it's not a horrible place, there are too many good places to try to settle for just okay. Miso Soup - too strong and salty Chicken katsu - didn't look like a great bit of chicken and it was poorly breaded. Tasted bland. Hamachi - it had quite a lot of dark meat, which I don't like, and the skin wasn't completely removed.

Dude. I fuxkin digg this place!!! I was introduced to this aMazballz restaurant by my good friend a few months ago. At first I was very skeptical because I've never seen it before (I drive by it everyday on the way to work), and I've never really heard about this place until my friend persuaded me to give it a try----best decision I've ever made in terms of dining. Before I get into detail, I want to first get something straight! Many people on yelp gives this a bad review only due to the employees lack of service... I don't know if they haven't gotten the proper training or if they just don't care? That's why I always sit at the sushi bar, served by the best sushi chef in the world, HARU! This gentleman is quite the entertainer, and he also happens to have the most generous heart----that is if you catch him at the right time, or if there is any seats left at the bar. But any who, if any of you know of anyone with enough serving experience, y'all should givem a hollllaaaa and tell them to apply :D help rebuild the reputation it deserves! ...BECAUSE THE FOOD HERE IS ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY FANTASTIC! 10/10. Haru, never serves fish that is not up to his par. Their fish is delivered DAILY and he will return the product if he has any reasons to believe the quality of the fish is bad. I've been to so many Japanese places because I'm your average korean sashimi nut, and sushi zono has now become my favorite Japanese restaurant of all time. You can't find anything fresher. Hope this place never closes!!!!

Go the sushi bar. Now! Haru, the sushi chef, is awesome! He really picks out good quality fish and he's a fun guy to talk to :) It's been awhile since I've sat at a sushi bar in awhile, and it was a fun and delicious experience. My friend and I pretty much winged it and asked him to give us anything good that day, and we were not disappointed! While we were noshing away our food, Haru actually told us why he named is Sushi Zono. Growing up in Japan, Haru would take his then girlfriend out to eat at a place called Sushi Zono. He admired the sushi chef so much, he named his own sushi restaurant after his! Well, that's the cliffnoted version, so if you're interested in the details, that's something interesting to talk about with him. Anyway, service here is good. The servers weren't really attentive to refilling drinks and it was pretty hard to catch their attention.

Came by for dinner the other night. The restaurant is tucked away behind the Payless Shoe Store. Parking is plentiful but it's always best to park further away from the main entrance just to be sure your car doesn't get involved in a hit and run... Service was leisurely by the staff, although they were friendly when available. They also made several attempts to refill water. Miso Soup - Slightly salty, it was okay Side Salad - Light dressing and fresh Hong Roll - Tasty and fresh - Light and small portions Ika Fry - Fried Calamari was perfectly executed - Perfectly cooked (not rubbery) ~$21/person after tax and tip.

Working @ sushi place, I know is not fun for the servers to have new customers coming when almost closing. I hate it myself also when I am working. However, we came when is 30 min before the restaurant closed, which the service we received wasn't acceptable. The food itself wasn't any special and they have lack of special rolls choices. The server bring out the sallad and miso but no drinks. I didn't complained too se if he would notice it and bring it out. Sadly, when we almost finish the meals he finally check on us and still didn't see something was missing on our tablw. Towards the end when we asked for the check. He clean up our plate w/ out still not notice that we have NO drinks. When we finally got our check, they charged for the sodas that we never ever received. Lucky Safeway was nearby so that we would buy some drinks to get down the foods down from our throats.

Just moved here from Shanghai. This place is not bad. Usually order the grilled fish and spider roll. Service is awesome. Server gave us lots of extra bowls of miso soup. Kid friendly!

Went there for the first time the other night. Has a loyal following - patrons talked about how long they have been frequenting the restaurant. Many folks have been devoted for more than 20 years. Taste the food and you understand the devotion, rich fresh buttery fish, high attention to quality and a great menu . Try the Vegas Roll and the aji. Best ponzu I have ever had. Service is a bit slow- they looked understaffed the night we went, so be prepared for a nice leisurely meal. This is now our new go to sushi place!!!

This place is a bit underrated. I see a lot of great sushi bars here not being appreciated enough with comments like "the roll we ordered was nothing special..." etc etc. But if you wanted rolls don't even bother. Those fancy, creative, extravagant rolls aren't even real Japanese food. Not that rolls are bad; I appreciate some from time to time but I wouldn't call them Japanese food. With that finally off my chest, I'll get started with the review of my experience. I came to Sushi Zono for the first time because it was recommended to me by a friend who knows her Japanese restaurants very well. She reserved the bar seats for dinner time. We ordered nigiris on demand (for lack of a better word). We would order one or two and the sushi are made in front of us by the chefs and we'd order more along the way. This to me is the ultimate way to have a nigiri experience. I was so satified with both the food and experience. The fish (and seafood) are so fresh and the preparation is on point. The chefs talk to the customers who sit at the bar and the customers therefore get to be more engaged. Chefs also make personal recommendations and I feel like they customize the orders or the way to prepare the food based. Overall, the ingrediants are fresh, execution is great, chefs are friendly, envrionment is fun and laid back, the bill is honestly relatively small for the food and experience I received. I would definitely come here over and over again!! Always ask about the daily specials for something interesting and delicious!

We like this place. Very good food and service and reasonable prices. The rest is nice inside too.

I will preface this with the important detail that I am NOT a sushi buff. I live in Montana so I rarely have the opportunity for sushi. But, for my first real sushi experience, I had the time of my life here. Our friend who brought my hubby and I really made this experience for us and he also knows the owner well, having come here for yes, some 20 years. So we cozied up to the chef and engaged with him on a level that elevated our experience but I would venture to guess that if you get a seat at the bar, the chef would engage with anyone this way. He is very amicable. Our friend chose all of our dishes. We started with a Japanese beer, Kirin Ichiban and Shiro Maguro; it's seared Albacore, bathed in Ponzu and topped with white and green onion...loved it...portion could have fed two. We then had tender calamari, Ika Fry, tossed in a spicy sauce; the best calamari I've ever had. Followed by 3 different nigiri: hamachi, scallop, and one other....by this time I'm stuffed.. but food keeps coming out along with an amazing sake and shrimp tempura (simply heavanly), tuna hand roll, and eel nigiri. The eel was our dessert and it was divine. I will always use this experience as my gauge for good sushi......Thank you!
(5)Martha S.
My first time eating here tonite: Service: fair/inexperienced server Food portions: fair & overpriced. However, the super spider roll and unagi hand roll was good. Bento box small portions for our big appetites. Disappointed and will not return. Recommend Mizu (Campbell), Shendai (Milpas) TGI sushi (Saratoga Ave)
(2)Brad B.
The sushi was ok, the price was a little high, but the sushi chef and the drunk patron spewing profanity in front of me and my 12 year old daughter guarantee I'll never go back.
(1)Robert P.
Haru really knows his stuff. I like to take friends who are visiting from out of town here. The food is always fresh and tastes fantastic. One of my favorites is the Vegas roll. I've never seen it anywhere else and you have to try it if you want something a little different and really delicious. It has tuna, hamachi, salmon, green onion and avocado. The roll is dipped in tempura batter and lightly fried to give the outside a nice little crunch. Fabulous! My wife loves the unagi and has it every time we go. Make sure to have the fried green tea ice cream for dessert. It's unbelievably good.
(5)Jacqui C.
Gwen roll and ika sunrise are delicious! Service is friendly and fast. Their sushi has always been fresh.
(5)John G.
My wife and I went for our first date night in ages and it was...acceptable. It's comfortable and clean inside. Parking wasn't too bad, and we were seated quickly. We had one exceptional roll ("Raging Tuna") and three mediocre ones. Prices are high for what you get and the wait for the food to appear dragged on unreasonably long. The "non-premium" rolls we got tasted good, but they were sloppy. But not as sloppy as the sloppy drunk patrons at the bar, fully blitzed and literally roaring drunk by 6:45 PM.
(2)Aaron R.
Ive been going here for years. The las Vegas roll is still maybe my favorite roll and Ive been to many "nicer" restaurants. The entrees are very good as well. Still hard to beat
(5)Benny C.
By far the best sushi in Campbell, San Jose, or anywhere near! A true foodies restaurant. The sushi is fresh and authentic. Some sushi restaurants just cover their sushi in sauce to cover the mediocre sushi. Not here. I have been to many sushi restaurants in the area and food wise, none compare. Pros: Great sushi. Try a Vegas Roll, albacore appetizer, blue fin nigiri. Sushi chef Haru or Hong will let you know what is good if you ask. Great Kirin beer on draft. I recommend sitting at the bar. Cons: Customer service needs improvement. If you read a few reviews this is a common theme. I am a regular so my service is always great. But if you are new and never been you may feel like the new kid at school nobody wants to talk to. My advise, be aggressive and nice. You may have to flag people down for service. Deal with it.... the sushi is worth it. Frankly the only reason this place isn't packed on a nightly basis is because: it is in a hole in the wall not easy to find spot, they do not advertise, and service is bad sometimes which scared off new customers. If you are a sushi lover, no place compares. Its hard for me to eat sushi other places because I know it won't be as good. The restaurant has been in business in the same spot since 1984, so they must be doing something right. If you are a real foodie and sushi lover, go there. It's delicious!

Very good food, service and decent price. There are several dishes here that I can't find elsewhere....ika fry squid!!!!

I have been coming here for 7 years. This WAS my go-to sushi joint. The past few times have been very disappointing. The service was unaccptable. They brought my husband's plate out 45 mins before mine! I didn't order anything complicated...one of their special rolls. So why did it take so long?! They made us miss our movie! I took a break from them for a while, but decided to come back this past weekend, 9/13/2014. Nothing changed...again, my Crunchy Tammy roll came out 40 mins later. Meanwhile, my family finished their dinner. PLUS, they are cutting back on their portions, way back! My husband's pork Katsu was like a child's plate. They didn't bring out the salad or soup that came with the dinner plate. I had to mention to them that the plate came with soup and salad. My roll was half the size as it use to be. For $15 dollars, c'mon... They are also charging .75 for extra ginger, really? Cutting back on portions, "forgetting" to bring out the sides and charging extra for ginger...no thanks! Needless to say, I won't be coming back. That is too bad, because I like to support local mom and pop shops.

Good food. Great service. Done! Oh wait, LOVED the calamari. Would definitely get that again!
(4)Ben D.
Sushi Zono is the best sushi place in Campbell / San Jose...hands down. I read reviews about service, and I think people need to slow down and enjoy themselves. Great sushi, good people..cheers.
(5)T S.
A foodie friend/chef recommended this place and we were pleasantly surprised. The place is worth giving a try, they have their own take on sushi.

I have been going to Sushi Zono for 20 years. I have not been back lately within the last 10 months, so I am not sure what happen. I was just there Thursday August 7, 2014 for dinner and things have changed. The food quality is not the same. The food is bland and the portions are smaller. Also the prices are higher and they are charging more for extras or substitutions. I notice that the sushi chef is the same person and one of the cooks remain the same, but the others are new to me. Has this place changed ownership and/or management? For a Thursday night at dinner time, we were the only ones in the restaurant. This place used to be packed before. When we left, there was only one other couple that came in. This used to be a great place, but somehow they changed this for the worst.
(2)Brandon Y.
Sushi Zono used to be a family favorite, even though it's way in the back of that lot...however my most recent visit was rather unimpressive. The bro and I opted for the dinner for two which included miso soup, salad, chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, gyoza, tempura, and green tea ice cream. Even though we couldn't finish all the food, it still seemed like not too much food in comparison to what we used to get. In addition, the food was pretty average. And, like other reviews, we were also waiting there for a while for our food after ordering... Probably should have opted for the sushi this time around - next timeee

Good food....recommend the Alice sushi rolls. Service was a little slow which seems to go along with the other reviews posted. We arrived 15 minutes before a 6 o'clock reservation, it was a surprise birthday dinner and so we had to be sure to be there early. They took our drink orders a few minutes after we sat down. The thing that killed it for me was we had to wait almost 20 minutes until they took our food orders. We were waiting for a couple people and instead of serving the table the server chose to wait. Whatever, no big deal considering we were with friends that we had not seen for a long time. They did serve salad and miso soup before the meal which was definitely welcomed. As far as the traditional salad at sushi restaurants, Zono was a little skimpy.....I was digging my chopsticks into the bottom of the bowl hoping more of that awesomeness would appear. The miso on the other hand was served in pretty big bowls and I really liked the flavor. I ordered a Sushi Zono Bento Box, which was $19.95.....I was a little disappointed on the portion size for that price. I mean honestly, the chicken portion was decent but the beef was super pinner and Zono could have served a bigger portion and still made money. Probably the most expensive bento box I have had anywhere and that is pretty ridiculous. The sushi was good, everyone was happy to try the various signature rolls. Beer and sake were probably good but I stuck to the non-alcoholic drinks. Sucks they charge you $2 for a can of coke and than do not offer refills. Sushi Zono was a bit too pricey for my taste, definitely not the greatest service, no doubt they get return customers who dig their signature rolls. $20 for a measly bento box......I don't think I will come back, unless the same friends come back to town and they need to get a fix on their "Alice Roll" craving.

sushi restaurant I always go to. Ive so far only recorded 40+ check-in's at the time of the review which is an understatement. 5 stars for being pretty much the only REAL japanese restaurant in the south bay (if you exclude the izakaya spots). There is a japanese saying that you can tell if a japanese restaurant is good based on their tamago(egg) and saba and udon! Granted my experiences here are 90% at the sushi bar, the saba and tamago are great. But seriously, the bar is where its at! There is a 15 dollar minimum at bar but you'll easily spend that after 2-3 plates of sushi with a beer. Plus you get soup and salad compliments of the chef. Whenever i go, I always get the sashimi dinner plate for 1-2 people which fills me up plenty. The salmon with the SUPER thinly sliced lemons is a must.. muy bueno!!!! The fish is always fresh to death and never disappoints. GET HARU's(chef) scallops if youre ballinn or the ART roll if youre feelin cheap :) Dinner usually costs me and my friend $35-40 a person. Sometimes i ball out and eat 70 just by myself lol. The biggest underdog at this restaurant is the UDON! his udon is something i have never had anywhere else. the chef explained to me that he imports his noodles from the most expensive(worth it) vendor in japan. I believe it cuz the noodles are soo chewy and soft. This might be an overstatement but i think the noodles are better than orenchi's imho. but dont take my word for it! try it! Zono is also a great place to drink if you and your friends wanna sit back and enjoy nice sake. Haru has the works when it comes of alcohol. he's got a plethora of sake selection: dry, smooth, unfiltered, you name it!!! He even has DRAFT sake which is unseen at any japanese restaurant ive been at. FYI: he only has Kirin on tap. As for the service, I know alot of people complain here on Yelp but i honestly really like the service but maybe thats cuz im biased and been coming here for many years. I took a couple of my friends here who also work in the food industry and they thought the service absolutely sucked. they told me the food came at staggered times, the server gave bad sake recommendations, didnt refill her water in a timely fashion, etc etc. LOL i dont care cuz it didnt effect me! BOTTOM LINE: great japanese food, great chef, great ambience. PS: the deep fried ice cream is a must unless youre on a diet -_-

If I could take away stars, I would. Unfortunately to fill this out, I had to give them one star. THEY DON'T EVEN DESERVE THAT ONE Ate there today for the first and LAST time ever. Fish in the sushi rolls tasted rancid, like instant throw up because you can taste how old it is. Avocado in the California Rolls was brown, cream cheese in the Philadelphia Roll was grey and chalky. Oysters didn't taste like oysters at all, complete with still being able to see grit in the shells. Chicken in the chicken teriyaki tasted like smelly feet. The veggies in the tempura were limp and tasteless. The only edible thing from our entire meal was the rice. So I called the manager to get a refund, and he laughed and told me if I want a refund to call the police. ZERO STARS for food and ZERO STARS for customer service.
(1)Rebekah H.
When we lived in San Jose, this was our regular spot! We have tried many other sushi/Japanese restaurants and this is by far our favorite. Sushi is usually pretty fresh and consistently good. Prices are reasonable. We have since moved and have yet to find a good sushi spot where we are! Def miss this place.

Chirashi Chronicles #11 **3.5 Stars** After almost 3 years from my last visit, I decided to return to Sushi Zono for some chirashi. I remember being impressed my first visit by the quality and cut of the nigiri and thought the chirashi would be another way to test the establishment. The other choices in the area are TGI Sushi, which clearly is more a roll place, and Michi Sushi, which I think is also more a roll place and overpriced compared to the competition. I decided to opt for the special chirashi at $23 over the regular chirashi at $16. I think it was a good choice. The order included a complimentary salad, miso soup, and also hot tea. When the bowl came out, I was impressed with the variety as well as some very good cuts: Ikura - very generous portion of ikura Sake - I believe a higher quality smoked salmon piece was included Maguro - very good Ebi - usually prefer the amaebi for the higher price Tamago - nice size egg piece Hamachi - fresh selection of yellowtail Overall, I considered it an above average chirashi and thought the price was reasonable. If I'm in the area, I'll be back for the chirashi.

Quaint and very good sushi lunch! The real wasabi is hot but tasty. Unlike the foo-foo wasabi i've had from most places. Will be back most Definately to try their oysters.
(5)Armida S.
This is by far my favorite sushi restaurant. The Tataki appetizer is amazing and the hong roll is to die for. Love, love, love this place.
(5)Ross P.
A friend took me there for lunch. I gave three stars for the setup and how authentic the place looked to me. I enjoyed the friendly service there but not really the food. My sushi wasn't really that great salad was good though.
(3)Andrea D.
You have to remember that there is a $10 credit card minimum or else you have to pay cash.
(5)Arthur S.
My experience here at Sushi Zono was awful. The service was bad, it wasnt a packed restaurant, it tooked nearly an hour to get our food, when we finally received our food we still had to wait for my girlfriend's rolls. we decided to get up and leave to just paid for the rolls we have ate. Never coming back here again.
(1)Brent T.
Favorite Japanese restaurant ever. I guess I might be a little biased since it was also our neighborhood Japanese restaurant growing up. But everything I've ever had here has been done well, and I've always gotten great service here. Prices are fair and the food is excellent. Also, my Japanese friend (from Japan) said once that it is her favorite sushi place. That's enough of an endorsement for me. I also like that it's tucked away in a far corner of a strip mall, so I kinda sorta feel like I'm in on something. Even though I'm not. But I like that I really have to explain where this is to people who don't know or haven't been.
(5)AB C.
It took them 45 minutes to prepare my simple take out order on a weeknight. They told me to come in 20 minutes. When I got to the restaurant, they had not even started making my order! The sushi was good but I was frustrated it took more than TWICE the time they had originally quoted.
(2)Jennifer L.
I came here for one of the many birthday dinners and i regret picking this restaurant for my main birthday meal. The food was not memorable and the service can be improved. My bf and I ordered the Dinner for 2 and added the Deep Fried Green Tea ice cream for an additional $4. We also added sake and tamago rolls to our menu. The sushi wasn't bad, but it also wasn't the best that I've had either. Luckily, the food that we ordered was enough to get us full. Everything tasted fine, but still nothing that makes it stand apart for a birthday meal. The only thing worth coming here is for the Deep Fried Green Team ice cream. It's big enough to share with up to four people. The server was very kind, but she seemed busy with other tasks. We asked for refills on water and we never got it till the end of our meal. Quick Tip: Don't come here for your birthday, they don't do anything special for you or even wish you a happy birthday. :(
(2)Chloe N.
My favorite Japanese restaurant in San Jose as for today. The food & sushi were always fresh and delicious. The service was friendly, I will go back
(5)Rick T.
Since my last review years ago, the last few times here have underwhelmed me with the sushi. Also, I have never had a remotely friendly interaction with the older sushi chef at the bar. He may or may not be the owner, but seems to lack an ability to smile back or engage in any kind of friendly banter with a customer who was trying to support his business.....oh well time to move on.....check back for a review on a promising newer place called Omee J.
(3)jean c.
Ok I've read a few of the reviews which reference the older lady owner not being a member of the genteel sort. Yes this is correct. Had what is probably the worst restaurant experience in recent memory at Sushi Zono last night. Waited 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged our existence. My wife had to get up out of the bare feet only booth and flag down the owner (only one available, unfortunately) to take our order. Very rushed and unhelpful but at least the order got taken. Here is the time frame and representation of the food: 10 minutes later: Salads and miso soup, fine, acceptable 10 minutes later: Assorted sushi, uninspiring, spider roll horrible, rancid tasting 15 minutes later: Child's teriyaki chicken plate, had to be sitting out for a while, cold 5 minutes later: Edamame shows up, ordered as appetizer, infant portion 10 minutes later: Chicken Udon, not a bad broth but really oily with chicken rubber We complained about the cold chicken plate and she took off the bill after my wife had to get up from booth again to flag her down. Ask to speak to a manager and of course she was the manger, no help there. Moral to the story, don't go to Sushi Zono, please?
(1)Scott S.
I took a coworker here for lunch. We didn't have any sushi, but both of us liked the lunch specials which are reasonably priced. For $8.50, you get two choices of entrees plus salad, soup and rice. I had the California roll (8 pieces) and tempura. I asked if I could have all broccoli for the veggie which was cheerfully done. The batter on the tempura was a bit heavy, but still tasty. Service was attentive and prompt. We had green tea ice cream for dessert and the total bill was just under $30 including tip.
(3)Beverly T.
Decent sizes, cheap prices, good quality. Salmon teriyaki: Ok sized portion but the fish was very well cooked. It was flaky on the outside but tender on the inside and they didn't drench it in sauce. Ika fry: Get it spicy. It's the smaller Asian calamari (legs and all), marinaded in a sweet, spicy, soy sauce and lightly fried or sauteed. It's really fucking good. Trust me. Chirashi: Some fish were meh but it was overall satisfying. There was maguro, hamachi, ebi, sake and tamago. Typical but it hit the spot. I think they make the tamago in house cause it was actually really good. Light and fluffy. Not all wet and dense like the store bought stuff. Also got a hamachi tataki (small). Should've gotten the large. This thing was overpriced and only had 4 tiny pieces of fish but the fish was fresh. Side note: The waitress speaka no Engrish here. It's terrible.

Live Soft Shell Crab!!!!! Still moving!!! Great fish! Family owned and operated!
(5)Chip H.
This is my Cheers! Love it. Best Spider Roll anywhere.
(5)Caryn B.
The sushi here is fine, but the ambiance sucks. There's no music to liven the place up, some strange interior decorating, and very mild mannered staff. Whenever I go here, I feel as if the life has been sucked out of me, making Sushi Zono the worst place to go on a date or before a night out.
(2)Jamie M.
Located in the back corner of a plaza is this place. A friend of my suggested this place which is always good because going to the same sushi places gets too routinely after a while. There are sitting booths, tables, or the bar to sit down to enjoy your meal and watch whatever is on tv. The staff seemed friendly and service was pretty quick and efficient. As for the rolls: Art - I love how it's very hard to notice the scallop, but it definitely makes its presence known when you take a bite into the roll. There was also just the right amount of spice in the spicy sauce. Hong - I'm a huge fan of spicy stuff, and this roll has the right amount of spice to give it the extra kick without being too overwhelming. The shrimp tempura was cooked well and the portions were solid. Freedom - Reminded me a lot of a Philadelphia roll (which I love), but there was a lot more cream cheese than I would like. Besides that, it was like a standard philly roll with avocado on top. If this was based on the food, this would easily be 4 stars. However, once we got our food, it seemed like the staff didn't really give a damn about us anymore. Even as we were leaving, we weren't acknowledged. I wouldn't have mind but if you make eye contact with me, I'd think a half-assed "good night" wouldn't be too hard. With that said, I'd probably come back if I was in the area.

Came here as a spur of the moment idea. My best friend and I were looking for a sushi fix so we checked out yelp for nearby places. This place has slow service, indeed! We spent more than an hour here just to get two bento boxes and share the "Bagel" roll. Chicken teriyaki - super fatty, yuck! Miso soup - good, but a bit too many green onions. Salad - good dressing Noodle things - gross Cali Roll - crab & avocado, what else can I say but, basic!? "Bagel" Roll - seaweed came out with an extra potent and nauseating scent but the smoked salmon with the cream cheese was great! All in all, we weren't acknowledged when we walked in, our server had terrible English and, again, slow service. Oh, and too many little white sheets of computer paper all posted around the place. A little tacky I'd say.. Probably won't ever go back because it was nothing special at all!

I think I've found me a sushi joint I can come back to. At first glance, I wasn't too impressed. The parking lot was pretty empty, and Sushi Zono looked pretty unloved in the corner. But make no mistake, this is the real deal. Had a few things today: - Fresh sea scallop (the scallop here is served pretty big. Fresh, though a little intimidating) - Salmon nigiri - Salmon skin roll (one of my faves, pretty good here) - Spicy tuna roll (served with just a touch of mayo) - Crunchy Tammy (not the healthiest, but freaking delicious; unagi, avocado, shrimp, topped with tempura flakes and spicy sauce) Lunch was also served with salad and miso soup. The friend I went with foot the bill today, so I didn't get a chance to make a bang per buck analysis. But when the sushi is this good, it doesn't really matter.

I've been here twice. My friend loves this place. I would eat here again, but I wouldn't CHOOSE it. I feel like the rolls are sad. Lol I don't know how to describe it. It's not typical rolls and it's not creative. It's plain. I can never decide which rolls to get. But the last time I came here, it was almost closing. So maybe that's why the fish wasn't AS fresh? I couldn't even finish the other piece of Salmon Nigiri. =( The service was good, our waitress was attentive. Other than that, I'd probably try this place again and see if my outlook has changed.

This place is a hidden gem that's located almost behind Payless Shoes. My bff and I came here last month after the first place we choose turned us away on a weekend night for not having reservations. We didn't need them here-:) The place looks small and plain on the outside, but it's larger than it looks from the outside and the interior is nicely decorated. We got the following to split: Dinner for TWO Includes all 10 items 34.00 House Salad California Rolls (12pc) Shrimp Tempura Miso Soup Beef Teriyaki Vegetable Tempura Gyoza Appetizer Chicken Teriyaki Rice Green Tea Ice Cream Dinner for 3 available for $49.00 For $34.00 we got a lot of food as you can see. The portions were generous and the service was good. We both left there very full! Everything was fresh and tasty! The only thing that I didn't care for was the green tea ice cream. There was nothing wrong with it, I just don't like that flavor. I highly recommend this place! They're located in a small shopping center so finding parking might be a little hard to find if you come here on the weekend, so try to come here as early as you can.

Relax. Kick back. Enjoy your company and some sushi. Sitting booths and traditional kneeling booths to make the meal even more intimate. Or sit down at the bar and enjoy the company of the sushi chef and fellow patrons. Nigiri - (2pcs) I liked the salmon here, flavorful, right texture, and just yummy. Oyster - a little too much lemon for my taste that I could barely taste the oyster until the very end. Bagel roll - (4 big pieces) - like a giant version of a Philadelphia roll, big cuts of salmon, cheese, and avocado. Yummy! Alisu Roll - (8? small pieces) - much like a spicy tuna roll, but the avocado makes it creamier and the fried tempura adds additional texture to it. Much like everyone said, service is a bit slow, so I wouldn't come here if you're starving or in a rush. Beautiful and I had a great time, and will come back to check out the kneeling booths! I loved the simple decor, it doesn't try to be modern or hip, it just works. I would recommend ordering the sushi as sashimi or nigiri style so you can tell the quality of the fish here. *Pictures will be uploaded soon. Vegas roll - The taste of the fried masked the taste of the fish,

Being new to the Campbell area, we drove around looking for a place to eat. The sign in the window said open so we came in. Mustached homeboy behind the sushi counter looked at me with a scowl, looked at the clock on the wall, and then walked into the back. Fair enough, it was 9:10, so technically they were closed, but was this treatment really necessary? Honest mistake, sign said open, there were 4 tables still seated and 3+ at the sushi bar! Edit: Ok I gave it another try. The sushi was fresh, price decent. I'll upgrade it to 3 stars from 1. Maybe it will go up another start on my next visit. Edit: Another star after trying it again. Dined in this time, the gals at the tables are very nice and give good service. I was looking for Katsu-Don, which was not on the menu, she took the time to ask the kitchen if they could make it, and it was delicious! Price to portion/quality is a little low, which prevents 5 stars for me. For the same price, I'd prefer to drive a little further towards the many sushi places around Saratoga/280.

This is hands down my favorite sushi joint. Their roles are really good and super cheap. I have been her several times and have never been disappointed. We ordered 4 roles and the total came to $26... ummm DEAL! What I ordered last time: Sushi Zono roll - My favorite role, no wonder they named the restaurant after it! Teka Maki - good simple standard. Dynamite - good if you like really spicy, it was TOO spicy for my date. Vegas - Flashy and Larger than life! Just like you'd expect. Tuna, hamachi, salmon, green onions, & avocado, lightly fried for $9.50 When you order over $7 in sushi, your meal comes with miso soup (which is really good) and a salad. My one gripe is that they changed the salad dressing... It used to be something I'd crave, now its just some champagne vinaigrette... I think it used to be a type of sesame dressing, anyway, if you're reading this Zono, bring it back please!

After reading so many great reviews, and hearing good things about this place from friends, I've been wanting to try it. It's really close to my house, so I was hoping it would be as good as the reviews indicated. Had dinner with a friend here on Saturday night. There were quite a few people there, but we were still able to be seated immediately. Although, by the time we left, it was almost entirely full. We shared gyoza and sake. The gyoza were cooked perfectly, and I really liked the flavor of them. I ordered the black cod, (one of my favorite dishes) I always get this when I see it on a menu. I also had the sashimi sampler. This consisted of 3 slices ahi, 3 slices salmon, and 2 slices of hamachi. The fish tasted VERY fresh, and the black cod was AWESOME. Service was efficient, food came out quickly, and our server was very pleasant. Prices were reasonable for the quality of the fish. I still love Yuki in WIllow Glen, but this is a good alternative.

This place was recommended by a friend so the fiance and I decided to check it out. We came here on a Tuesday night. Even though the place was a third full, it took them 5 mins to seat us, another 10 mins to get our water/tea, and another 15 to take our order. We ordered the sashimi dinner and was able to get half hamachi and half salmon. We tried 3rolls (Hong roll, Vegas roll, and sushi zono roll) all which were mediocre. I'm not sure if I'll come back.

If you like good sushi with a neighborhood atmosphere, this is the place to go. Service can be up and down (often your greeted and seated right away, but we have had to stand and wait with no acknowledgement) but the food makes up for it. The Ika Fry is one of their best appetizers and the Hamachi Kama (cheek) is a favorite of ours. The Sushi Bar is always busy when we're there so the chef must do a good job of entertaining and serving the sushi.

We got a .. something, I know it was not groupon, some certificate gives us some discount. We called before went there, a lady said, oh, yea, we'll take it. After dinner, this woman came back with that discount paper said that we couldn't use it. So, I wouldn't go there again. If you can't even keep your word just few hours ago, what good are you?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE sushi zono. It's really one of those hidden treasures that I've come to appreciate greatly. The fish quality is soo good because of their picky owner which is a good thing since it shows that he only wants whats best for his customers and that he knows his stuff. When you come here make sure you ALWAYS sit at the bar. I don't care if there is a 2 hour wait, WAIT! MAKE THE RESERVATION and SIT AT THE BAR! The chefs are fun to converse with while waiting and watching them make your sushi and you'll really see just how fresh and delicious all the fish really is.

I came here on a Saturday for a birthday dinner and it wasn't the same experience like 3 years ago. This place totally went down hill...it was a Saturday and it wasn't busy at all, there were only two parties, including ours. I tried the Hawaiian poke- too salty, didn't like it at all, I had to convince my friends to help me finish it. Vegas roll-it has tuna, Hamachi, salmon, green onions, & avocado, lightly fried for $9.50, but I asked them not to fried it and it was really good, except the Vegas roll only has 5 slices :( Deep fried Green tea ice cream-SUPER SUPER good! The ice cream was still frozen and the tempura on the outside was crunchy. 2 stars for the patient waitress and yummy dessert.

most definitely one of my favorite sushi places to go to in the south bay. i have rather shark-like preferences when it comes to sushi: make the fish as fresh as possible, make it sashimi or nigiri, and delight me with new choices and surprises from time to time. sushi zono delivers: for many years, Haru and Han have been excellent hosts on what probably for me amounts to a bi-weekly basis (heavens, i don't even want to calculate... oh well we only live once :-D). i have always thoroughly enjoyed myself, and in the process learned about sushi over the years. they even call me up when they score a particularly nice mirugai (one my my favorites) and their specials are always worth trying: hirame, toro... oh too many to point out. and of course all the classics: hamachi, maguro, sake... always excellent. kick back with some cold Karatamba or draft Asahi, and relax and enjoy slowly. at times it gets *very* busy and you'll have to wait a little - it is worth the wait. :-) if you are a sushi purist, you ought to give sushi zono a try! on many thursdays or fridays you will find me sitting at the bar, early, because the sushi bar right in front of Haru and Han is a much sought after spot by fervent customers you will meet time after time, and being there often results in a group conversation between chefs and customers. sushi *and* entertainment, basically :-) i see many people talking about rolls and appetizers and what not - i hardly touch them, other than the *excellent* spicy ika fry (more like sauteed, really). i go for the fish kill, and often get into a feeding frenzy. sushi zono brings out the Carcharodon Carcharias in me :-)

I was in the area and decided to stop by and order a bento box to go for lunch. Even though I made it before the lunch rush, I was still waiting for about 15 minutes for my food. The meal (chicken teriyaki and California rolls) came out to a total of $10.. and it really wasn't all that great. The chicken was almost flavorless and I didn't grab extra teriyaki sauce so I was left with a plate of cold rice and bland chicken =( The only "ok" part was the California rolls and it was just mediocre compared to the rest of the meal. My experience eating there was a lot better than getting too go. I'm not sure why.. but either way, I don't think I'll be coming back.

This place is everything you could want in a sushi place. I've only sat at the sushi bar and had their sushi, and service was great. Haru is so awesome and always points me in the right direction with what is the best that day. He always has something on the side to try also. These guys are the real deal and they love what they do. Only place to go for sushi in my opinion.

I was feeling sick but still had plans with my besties for dinner. I got the chicken udon and it totally hit the spot. I only ate half of it since I wasn't feeling too hot but what I ate was delicious. Nice, clear, flavorful broth with tons of udon noodles, dark meat chicken pieces and green onions. My friend had some sushi rolls and they looked really good and she said they tasted fresh. I can't wait to try some of that next time! Service is friendly. Weird sitting in the booths because it's just plywood separating them so if you lean against it, you rock the other person. My spoon was dirty but they gave me a new one right away and apologized. Quiet little place that I'm planning on going back to soon.

In summary, super slow service and ok sushi. If you want to keep reading my rant then feel free. Came here for lunch the other day and when I got there, 3 other tables were already seated. Got sat down and it took 10 mins for us to get our menu. 10 mins later for us to order. Then another 10 mins to get hot tea. Yes, 30 mins after getting there before getting something to drink. Took 45 mins since I sat down before my first item came out. Ordered Poki (appetizer), Deluxe Bento, and two rolls. 1st out (45 mins) : Salad and miso soup that came with bento. Salad used italian dressing which was not very good and miso soup was over salty. 2nd out: Deluxe Bento. Chicken Terayaki, california roll, Mixed tempura, and croquette. Chicken and california roll okay. Tempura and croquette not very good. Wheres my poki? 3rd out: two rolls. Forgot the rolls but they were okay. May have been good but the poor service tainted my taste buds. Wheres my poki? After we finish the bento and rolls, they clean up. Wait, what happened to my appetizer? I ask what happened and the waitress who doesnt speak english very well says they are making it. I said I rather not have it since I ordered it as an appetizer and it never came out. She says they are already making it. I said fine, give it to me to go and give me my check. After 5 mins of watching them chatting, I wave my hand to get their attention and ask them where my check and poki was. She says they are still making it, its been an hour since I ordered it! I said take it off my check. Slow service, language barrier, trying to serve appetizer after meal finished = bad experience

We tried it again! And it's just as bad as a few months ago. Our family has been a big fan of Sushi Zono for the last several years, as for 2012 - it's off the list completely. We went on a Monday during lunchtime, about 9 other people in the restaurant, with about 5 employees. The service was terrible - we had to get up a few times to get things we needed, the sushi came out all together on a single platter, even though the waitress asked if we wanted it separate. She said "oh, sorry - they are just SOOOO busy they put it all together." Uh.. there are maybe 3 tables full! Anyway, they appetizer came out last (Again). We skipped the deep fried ice cream since we waited 10 minutes for the waitress to come over.. instead we went up to the counter to pay and get outta there. The food was subpar, the california rolls I had were truly disgusting - Safeway california rolls are better (and I would never again eat Grocery store sushi). A picture is attached. The rice bowl for my bento actually had a dry layer of rice on top - as it either was stored over the weekend or had been sitting up for quite a while (uncovered). I highly recommend this restaurant for a turnaround with Gordan Ramsey.

Sushi was pretty good...fish tasted fresh. This is what we ordered: Salmon Sashimi (super fresh and delish) Uni Nigiri (this was my first time trying Uni--definitely an acquired taste--I will not eat this again..it was very slimy and tasted like bad oyster to me) Alisu roll--the spicy tuna was really good and I love that it's topped with fried tempura dough Rainbow Roll-LOVED this one...the inside is made with scallops instead of california rolls We shared a fried green tea ice cream which was heavenly. Overall a good meal...total came out to be $45...not too bad for all the food we got.

For starters, anyone reviewing this place with more than 1 star must be eating dog food on a regular basis. The place smells like a musty laundromat, the service is slow, and they use way too much wasabi on their sushi. We had to take every piece apart and scrape the wasabi off just to make it edible. I would have sent it all back had I not been so hungry and didn't want to wait another half hour to get a new plate of sushi.

1- yes, the service is a bit slow...but worth it. 2- the most orginal rolls I have had in a while. Yummy!!!!!

I hate giving bad reviews and I do it very rarely, but I can't say that I enjoyed my experience with this place whatsoever. Their food is very low quality. I ordered tempura and it came out dripping in oil - ick. The one thing that upset me the most though is how they went out about their takeout order for their combo meal. No where on their menu do they mention that they will charge you for the miso soup if you take the order to go. They didn't inform me of it either until I asked why the price seemed more that it should be. Their service was friendly, I'll give them that. But since they have hidden charges, and below par food, I will not be spending any amounts of money here again.

can't believe that this place has any good reviews. friday night, not busy, at all. remnants of a recent rush...nothing too crazy. Walked in and ended up waiting 4 mins to be acknowledged. let me remind u of the very few guests they had. finally sit down, order hot sake and an app. smooth so far. get my gyoza...soup and salad. cold, was the soup...and Italian was the dressing.....?!?!?!?....ended up waiting 45 mins for 3 rolls, sorry but...where the fuck is my sushi?....haven't seen the waitress in about 30 mins or so...hrrrrmmmmm.......I dropped a 20 and walked out. i immediately went to FUROsato. instant gratification. never again.

And another Japanese restaurant gem is found in Campbell. I don't know why but Campbell is on a roll (pun intended). Came here for lunch with a friend and everyone we had was good. I know California rolls are pretty simple but this place and Michi's has the best ones. other places add mayo or just have too much crab meat that the roll looks like it has a tumor. Zono has it just right for my liking. The tempura batter is very impressive. It is hard for fried food to taste light and fluffy, but the shrimp and veggie tempura was the best of all the Campbell Japanese joints for sure. The location is convenient although it is in a strip mall with a bunch of dying businesses it seems. The interior is decent although I felt it was a little crowded.. not TGI Sushi crowded where you basically sit on strangers laps. Also some of the plates need to be updated. I ate my lunch bento out of a box that was no better than the tray that came with your Lunchables meal when you were in 5th grade.

love it!!! super delicious! Been coming here since i was a kid.

Zono, so ono! I know some pretty hardcore Zono fans, who rave about their sushi all the time. Finally after trying it, I have to say it's pretty good. It's not fancy, but I couldn't tell if the fish was fresh. The one roll I remember getting is the Hong Roll -- it had some kick, which was nice. But a couple of the rolls were so sauced up, you couldn't tell if it was fish jello wrapped up in there. They were tasty though. Tips: Good sushi and good value.

I went there with my gf after she had a rough day. Since it was closer to my place than Tanto in Saratoga Ave., I decided to try this place. When I called that place to make sure that the place would be open on Friday night (I know of one Japanese restaurant in Cupertino who changed its ownership recently), I forgot to make a reservation. Turns out I should have since we had 5 groups ahead of us. Thankfully we only needed to wait for 15 minutes instead of 20 minutes. We were seated in a booth table, and while the space was ample, partitions allowed talking from tables next to us being quite audible. That still did not prevent us from talking to each other though. What did interrupt our talk was how slow the service was. I mean, getting our main dishes took more than 20 minutes. I know the dinner time would be busy for preparing dishes, but since the crowd was dwindling, sushi chefs should have some allowable hands. My gf was getting irritated. Normally a restaurant would give some sort of complimentary appetizer in this kind of situation. While waiting we got the usual miso soup and salad. The salad was pretty typical with Italian salad wetting cut vegetables. Miso soup was OK too. Nothing memorable. My sushi dinner had four nigiri's and six tuna rolls and CA rolls. Sliced fishes was thicker than they ought to be, such that they overwhelmed decent (but still good) existence of vinegared rice. Fishes were fresh, so it was a matter of how sushi chefs handled nigiri's. Rolls on the other hand were balanced but also not as memorable as nigiri's. I also sampled my gf's combo dinner with chicken cutlet and salmon sashimi. Cutlet was OK although the meat had some tendon and fat. Sashimi was watery. While the fish itself was good, the texture was something to be desired. In any case, I come to realize that I just cannot expect the same level of Japanese food in Campbell as SJ, SV, MV, CU, and so on. The price was also on expensive-side ($18 for the combo dinner even with that subper quality).

Long story short: good sushi at nice prices. Service was so-so Long story long: Coming up to Boulder Creek for WCC over President's Day weekend, my friend wanted to come here for lunch, having been here several times on business trips for one of his old jobs. This was his favorite sushi place, at least in the bay, and we actually planned our flight up to San Jose and the drive to Boulder Creek around having lunch here. In total, there were 10 of us that went. We all could have fit at the sushi bar, but by the time the last car (4 of us, including me) arrived, the last 4 spots at the sushi bar were taken, so we had to take a table near them. The place is decent. The foreward dining area had tables for about 20-30 people, and the back area, where we were, were about 5 or 6 tatami tables, with cutouts for your feet. The one young waitress shows up and takes our drink order as we're deciding what to get. I was good with just about anything, so my friend ordered several items such as the albacore tataki and poke. He said the tataki is the best tataki he's ever had. We also ordered a special spider roll, something called the hong roll, and a couple orders of a black cod appetizer. The tataki and poke came out first. The tataki WAS really good. I will have to say that is the best tataki I've ever had. The albacore was really fresh, the onions were really fresh and the sauce was really good. The poke was just as good. The ahi and octopus was really fresh and it had good flavor as well. A very good way to start. The black cod came next. Broiled black cod that has been marinated and soaked in sake with sauteed mushrooms and a couple lemon wedges. The black cod was cooked just right and you could really taste the sake, but it wasn't overpowering. The earthy mushrooms helped cut the butteryness of the fish. I liked this as well. Our rolls came out and they both looked good. I absolutely love spider rolls, so whenever I see it on the menu, unless someone who has been there is adverse to getting it, I always have to get it. The Hong roll was good too. I forget exactly what was inside, but the spicy tuna on top was good. The owner's son, Abe, who is also one of the sushi chefs that my friend knows, sent us this salmon eggroll appetizer. That wasn't bad. I personally would have preferred a free roll, but you can't win them all. We ordered another tataki and a couple orders of salmon and yellowtail nigiri sushi. The fish was fresh but I didn't realize they put wasabi on the rice, so that was a bit much. I will have to say the only thing keeping this from being a higher review was the service. It was almost as if the girl forgot about us. In between the rolls and the nigiri, we didn't see her for probably almost 10 minutes. I was personally getting upset. Next time, I'm totally sitting at the bar....

If I could give ZERO stars I would. Years ago this restuarant was like a diamond in the rough. But the last 2 times I went here WERE LITERALLY MY LAST times ever! Servers are friendly and kind bu SLOW, the sushi just had a FISHY odor. I love sushi and expect it to be fresh and dont mind it to smell seafoody but on these two occasions I visited It was LIKE LEFT OUT OR WENT BAD FISHY SUSHI. Its been over a year and dont plan to go back.

Sooo I picked sushi Zono for dinner with some friends, 5 total. Since I made reservations the day prior, ours was the only available table. Pretty much the best service of the night. The waitress was rude and seemed annoyed that we were ordering food with her. They were out of the appetizer that we really wanted to try. Bummer. And we had to wait almost an hour for 4 plates to come out at 4 different times, with a good 10 minutes between plates. Sucked! Then to top it off their weak ass spider roll gave me a mild case of food poisoning. Its a damn good thing I was able to treat it with some all natural green medicine, remove some of those daggers in my tummy. Overall caca. Don't think I'll be back in this lifetime.

I had dinner there last night with my boyfriend. After reading all the good reviews about the place, we decided to check it out as we are sushi lovers. There was a good atmosphere and cute set up. There wasn't a wait for a table and the waitress was very nice. The food was great for the price. Totally worth it. We got an alisu roll, a spider roll, unagi maki, salmon skin maki and hamachi nigiri. They all tasted amazing and writing about it is making my mouth water. Sharing these along with the salad and soup made me comfortably full. Major points to the food. I docked 1 star because our waitress didn't come around very often to refill our glasses or check up on us. Also, we waited for our food for a while but it may have seemed like a long time because I was hungry. Overall, Sushi Zono is one of the best sushi places I've had in San Jose.

Came here on Friday for some sushi with the fam. Seated at the table as the bar was full of regulars. We ordered a few rolls and they were ok. Most memorable was the Alisa roll, Art roll and the Veggie Delight. I would have definitely order those again. The bad was the vegas roll and the hamachi nigiri. When it arrived at the table I thought they sent over the wrong fish. I asked the waitress what this was as it was yellowish and rubbery tough. I tried a little bite and had to spit it out. It was realllly fishy. The waitress said indeed it was hamachi and I told her the chef should not have served it. She took it off the plate and the bill. This is where this place lost me. WOW - seriously the sushi chef HAD to have seen this fish was just plain wrong. I wish I could say I would try this place again, but with other options around the area its not gonna happen.

Awesome, fresh and great service, inexpensive.

Good authentic sushi I've had thus far in area!!! It was great being served by Chef Haru-san. He gave my friends and I a lesson on the Toro and some sushi restaurant secrets. You have to try the Toro sashimi - I've never had fish that was so fresh! The oysters and Ika Fry are another tasty delight. Definitely coming back here as often as I can :)
(4)Daniel G.
I am ALL about the raging tuna. I have never seen this exact roll anywhere else, it's an albacore maki, very lightly deep fried and served in ponzu sauce and onions, it is screaming good. I pretty much want to order one of these for myself each time that i come here. word of advice, do NOT order the cold somen noodles unless you already know what it is and you like it, i thought it was going to be something very different than it turned out to be and i hated it. But that's my bad, live and learn. The sushi is great, and so is the food. We've had all of the basics, chicken/beef/salmon teri, tempura, gyoza, etc...it's all good. But it's really all about the raging tuna.

I have been coming to Sushi Zono for years, I used to work a lot in Japan and have found this restaurant to equal many of the neighborhood Sushi restaurants I would visit while in Japan. The staff is Friendly and the service is good, sometimes they get over whelmed when the place fills up and there is a line. When it comes to sushi I am more of a traditionalist, I fine their rolls to be excellent but I am more of a sashimi/nagiri person that likes to sit at the bar, enjoy the conversation and enhance my meal with a Kirin or a glass of good cold Sake, The fish is fresh, the specials are in tune with what's in season and if you get along with the chef you might get a little something extra. This to me is as close to Japan without all the travel hassles.
(5)Dan T.
Straight-up good sushi. Tried all the funny stuff (i.e. natto, amaebi shrimp, spanish mack, etc.) and was pleasantly surprised, considering the weird location (back corner of a hidden strip mall). Friendly owner/son combo. I had a great time actually. Note: they lay the trays on the top of the sushi bar. That is your signal to take it and eat it. I found wordlessly placing the dish above me to be odd and maybe an unfriendly gesture... but it's just what they do here. They were all sorts of friendly. Maybe I'm just used to the gushingly friendly "Irasshaimase" style sushi service. Who's to say which is better?
(4)Hannah L.
I've definitely had better! The place is so hard to find and the outside is not much to look at. The inside isn't much better and there weren't too many workers working. I ended up ordering the combination lunch special with chicken katsu and tempura. All I'm going to say is useless! The chicken katsu's fried batter was so crunchy and hard that it was so difficult to bite a piece of meat off without bringing the whole chicken out of the batter. Don't get me started with the tempura...it tasted as if they didn't use fresh batter or fresh oil to deep fry the tempura. Gross! This place was a total mistake and will not be back.
(2)N S.
Excellent sushi at reasonable prices. Instead of putting the regular imitation crab into the Rainbow rolls these guys put some sort of minced scallop mixture. Right on! This alone is worth coming back for. The service was attentive and caring. There was a loud crowd there the night we came and the waitress specifically seated us as far away as she could realizing ahead of time that the noise would be annoying. To me that's great service - thanks for thinking of our comfort ahead of time. Awesome.
(5)Karyn N.
Had Poki and Fried tofu for appetizers. Loved the Poki: good quality tuna with nice flavor on top of seaweed salad and onion. Hong Roll and Vegas roll. Thumbs up for both. Overall: good sushi at reasonable prices.
(4)Tim H.
I like this place for dinner, not so for lunch. The servers don't seem interested in my money... Stopped in for lunch one day, I tried this place for dinner it was good pricey but good. When you walk in during the lunch crush..hahahha...no one is around I saw one server who looked at me like I was from MARS, two sushi dudes behind the counter looking down at there knives. Really poor service, they know its a lunch crowd so not alot of BIG tips. But heck I am coming in to eat at your business at least treat me like a tourist! I ordered my usual spicy tune roll, soup & salad, maguro, hamichi. All were OK the sushi was so damn cold I thought I was going to shatter may teeth. That's because I had a rookie making my sushi. The owner Shin wasnt around to watch over things so I would be back during dinner. You can eat your bank account here if not careful. I would say yes to dinner no to lunch!
(4)Linda C.
I rarely review a restaurant and sushi is my favorite. Tonight was such a bad experience I want to save others the hassle. When I first walked in, I asked to sit at the Sushi Bar and the older Japanese lady said something to me that there was a reservation for 2 people. Rather than asking me to have a seat to wait, she acted like she didn't want me to wait. So, I half jokingly said, so you want me to go somewhere else. A new young waitress nicely said of course we want you to wait and asked me if I'd like a drink while I waited. Then the nice waitress after about 15 minutes said that I should go to a seat that had cleared. When I got down to the seat, I was told rather harshly by the main sushi chef that I was not to sit there as those were for the reservation. Btw, the reservation didn't show up for 1/2 hour past that time, but they seemed to want to keep those seats empty rather than seat someone. I waited another 5 or so minutes and then others at the sushi bar went to a table and freed up space. The main sushi chef acted like I was so lucky to get a seat. As I went down to the last seat, again, I was told not to sit there as those were reserved, even though I didn't see why it mattered which two seats (as long as they were together, were the empty chairs and which was the one I was going to sit in). As if the humiliation couldn't get worse (I should have left right then), the main sushi chef who I was in front of didn't take my order and didn't recognize me to ask me what I'd like. At this point the guy to my right ordered with the main sushi chef even though the chef was to the left of me. Finally, the second in command was the only one to finally after about 15 minutes take my order. The main one, wouldn't speak to me, look at me, or interact with me in anyway. As other reviewers said, it seemed he only wanted to speak with his friends or those he'd chosen were worth his time. On the bright side, the Salmon nigiri was very good and although the sushi chef that was taking my order was trying, he couldn't hear me and I had to yell to order as he area was away from where I was sitting. This maybe a small issue, but one thing that really irked me is that he placed my order just out of my reach on the top of the high counter area. I have never in my life had a sushi chef not hand you your order. It seems like that was a major break in proper etiquette. In fact, I think it was a sign of disrespect and rudeness of the highest order that seems so far below any real sushi chef who prides himself on his honor. Also, I had to ask for everything and was never asked for what I wanted the whole dinner. Finally, they gave me a bill without the itemization. I immediately jumped up and quietly discussed the bill with the checker that wrote it up. As she and I went over what I ordered, all of sudden the older lady and the sushi chef came over to see what the issue was and created a slight commotion. On what should have been a $30 dollar bill, I was charged $48. The only reason the error was recognized, is that I insisted on the itemization. When itemized, it showed they clearly charged me $18 dollars on top of my bill. They did apologize for the error though. So, I suggest you ask for the itemized bill. From beginning to end, I've never felt so unwelcomed in a restaurant. I think they'd be nicer to you in a McDonald's. I'm not kidding. The poor new waitress was the only bright spot, but she got scolded in public for trying to seat me when the seats were reserved (again those people didn't come for over 45 minutes past the time I arrived and wanted to sit and eat). An experience at a sushi bar is much more than the food; it's also the warmness and interaction with the chef. The service was a disaster from beginning to end. Save yourself the grief, and choose a place that has respect for all customers, regardless of weather they know you or not. The main chef seemed to be joking the whole time, that his reviews of the service were the worst. If he's aware, why not try to improve it. It was almost like he was so cocky saying my food is so good, I treat some of the people lousy and I'm still very busy which seems to be true. There are plenty of places where the sushi is great and the chef is not so full of his self worth. Do yourself the favor and don't submit to the exclusionary tactics. Humbleness and honor, two mainstays from master sushi chefs is sorely lacking here.

This was my spot at the end of 2006!!!! Miss it!!!

This is my all time favorite place to go for sushi with the bf. We have been going here for about three years now and it is one of our getaways for alone time with good food and sake. The place is hidden in the far corner of a strip mall with plenty of parkings. The servers are always attentive and friendly and they serve free soup and salads with sushi roll orders, which is a big plus because most places only serve soup or nothing at all. I normally order Kaki Fry (deep fried oysters) for appetizer and the Hong Roll is a must have every time I come here! I've had their Special Spider, Raging Tuna and Crunchy Tammy but nothing compares to the Hong Roll --It's one of my favorite rolls of all time and I have to have it at least once a week! Their combo dinner is alright in price but filling! My bf normally gets the pork katsu and I have tried the teriyaki salmon and loved it! Their pork udon and deep fried green tea ice cream is also to die for! The only negative feedback I have for this place would be the waiting time for our orders on busy nights like Fridays and Saturdays and they close on Sundays =( Other than that, this place is great. Expect to see me here at least once a week!

Have been coming here for years. It is kind of hidden in a strip mall, but when you find it you will be pleasantly surprised. The food is always consistently great. They have a great selection of fish in stock. I love the Alice, and Hong rolls. Whenever I am in town I stop by to have a great relaxing meal.

Looks could be deceiving! When I first entered this restaurant, the hole in the wall feel didn't appeal much to me. But this little gem is such a pleasant surprise. Their fish selection is not extensive, mostly standard stuff found everywhere, except anago and aji. However, the lack of selection is made up by quality! We were caution at first and began our dinner with hirame (halibut). We had it in two different styles - one regular sashmi style and the other carpaccio style (mix with olive oil and some herbs). The fish was fresh and both style were delicious in their own ways! After the hirame, we were sold and started ordering many different things: scallop, hamachi, uni, anago, tamago, seaweed salad, and a black cod with mango salsa. Without exception, every single item was very good (yes, including the seaweed salad!) - The scallop was shipped from Japan and almost as good as a live one. - The uni was very flavorful and didn't have any bitter taste. - The tamago was one of the best we ever had. The sushi chef was humorous and a fun person to chat with. Beware that, depending on how many customers the chef is serving, the food could come out a bit slow at times. We originally was only planning to have a quick 1-hour Tuesday night dinner but we ended up spending 2 hours there. But the food was well worth it. We will be back!

Took both of my best friends here for their birthday because one of them enjoy dining here. The atmosphere is decent, very nice waitresses. Lets get to the food: Hamachi Kama - really good. Their dinner portion is pretty decent size. Side Salad - not that great, the dressing is very liquidy. Sashimi - it's not that bad, ended up ordering the Moriawase. It has tuna, salmon, red snapper, octopus, and yellow tail. Overall, their fishes are pretty decent quality - thin slices though. I enjoyed the octopus Art roll - Scallop Mix, Avocado, Tuna, Tobiko, & Spicy Sauce. This was a disappointment because I couldn't even taste the scallop. Sushi Zono roll - Eel, Avocado, Kani Kama, & Tobiko. This wasn't that bad, just tasted like eel Spider roll - Softshell Crab, Avocado, & Tobiko - didn't care for this as much, other sushi places makes it better. The softshell crab seems overcooked Hong Roll - Shrimp tempura & A vocado topped with Spicy tuna, and spicy tobiko - This was a pretty good roll, I say one of the best there. From what yelpers were stating this place is not known for their rolls and I can see why. Vegas - Tuna, Hamachi, Salmon, Green Onions, & Avocado ~ Lightly Fried. Pretty good, should try

My family and I drive an hour to eat here because that is how good the sushi is. If you want awesome sushi that is high quality eat at Sushi Zono!

Was just here a couple of weeks ago during a Digital Hollywood Conference. My co-workers and I came here two days in a row, and my other co-worker three days in a row. We told the other people at the conference about this place as well as what to get, and they all LOVED it. Seriously the best place around. The clam that they gave us was still alive...talk about fresh! Here's what we got..and what I told others to get: Albacore Tataki (a MUST, and our favorite...the ponzu sauce is like no other) Black Cod with Shitake Mushrooms (marinated in sake) Hong Roll Tuna Poki Fresh Scallops Yellowtail Amaebi (with the crunchy heads)

WHOA. To all the ones that gave good ratings, did you mean to look up "Sushi ZONE" on San Tomas Aquino? We went in on a Friday night at 9pm, it wasn't busy, about half full. Decent looking place. Waitress came around and took our order promptly. That's about where things went south. We had a party of 7 and we all put in our order comprised of an app, entree rolls, salads, miso, and a bento box. The salads came out first and set the tone for the meal. The dressing was very mayonnaise-y. Horrible compared to Sushi Zone and especially my favorite, Minatos in Japantown. Miso soup was fine. The Assorted Sashimi appetizer came out and was decent but the quality was not up to par. Nice tuna is more smooth, and holds together. The tuna here was old and wouldn't even hold in a slice, but was falling apart. You could taste the difference in quality. Then, out of all the entrees, the Bento Box came out a good 10 minutes before ANY other entree came out. It was cold by the time he got to eat it because he didn't want to be rude and eat before everyone else. My rainbow roll and Salmon skin roll came out. I really liked the salmon skin roll. The rainbow roll was a little sub par. It was ok except again, you can taste the un-fresh fish and could see it as the flakes were falling apart. And the worst part, what is with the leaf garnish that is rolled onto the fish? Everyone peeled it off of theirs, but I didn't see it at first and bit into it. Our Nigiri Rolls had wasabi in it. Now that could be normal to some people, but we prefer places that don't make their Nigiri with wasabi smeared in. Fish wasn't fresh. The Tekamaki was a ground up tuna as opposed to most places that use a slice of the tuna. Points to unfresh fish again. Cali roll came with a big stick of imitation crab. Although that does remind me, the rainbow roll had the shredded crab, which was better. The Spider Roll was up to par. One friend had the tuna lover and had the same comment about the freshness. Finally, the price. It was higher than sushi zone pricing! We came here because our friend accidentally made a reservation thinking it was Sushi Zone. Don't make the same mistake.

fast service, delicious tempura and pot stickers. everyone was pleased with their entree.

This is my favorite place. Been coming here for 10 years. Love their sweet tea. Excellent Cal rolls. Just plain excellent food. Good deal too.

I've never experienced worse service in my life. I've been here twice. The first time, we sat at the sushi bar and were treated rudely by the waitresses. Plus, their english is horrible. The second time, we were seated at a table, and after 10 minutes of nobody coming over to even give us water, we stood up and left. Went next door to that persian restaurant which was really awesome.
(1)Esther L.
Appetizers; Poki (tuni with seaweed & onion) it was pretty good the seaweed+ Kaki (fried calamari): I was expecting seasoned battered calamari, so I was a little down when I saw the dish. It came out so fast I was pretty sure it was under a hot lamp. --wasnt hot at all. the seasoning was good with a slightly buttery taste and we squeezed the lemon on top. -Hong roll (pretty good w/ spicy tuna on top) : -Special spider roll (not so special when you see black shrimp gut string hanging out of the sushi) Still in search of that crunchy sushi roll and was not satified.. came home hungry still. -eh maybe i'll come back.

It's like going to the Federal Reserve in Philly: FRESH MONEY! Seriously, this is quality without breaking the bank! $77 gets you: -a rainbow roll (more on this later) -an unagi/avocado roll -a dynamite roll -Two orders of salmon nigiri and one order scallops nigiri - a beer for your sushi chef (which generated more food- see below) -20% tip - two cold sakes $9 and $12 - stuffed and feeling like we've found our new hangout We got there on a Thursday night at 6:45, and were able to park directly in front. We sat at the bar with no wait and had excellent service and pleasant conversation with the chef. We bought him a beer and he started making us wonderful side dishes: - salmon carpaccio - salmon egg roll - steamed mushroom ensemble (shiitake, oyster, etc) The quality on all of the fish was perfect, and the rice was made with care as well (good sushi rice is key for great sushi). The Rainbow Roll: in the core it has chopped scallops with a little mayo and a little tiny bit of spicyness, rolled inside out- then on top is tuna, salmon, and SHISO (YUM) layered for a very pretty effect - the presentation on this roll is truly beautiful......but to taste it is to KNOW heaven....the tastes melded together perfectly. The only downside was that they were out of fried green tea ice cream, but we really didn't need it anyway. 06/05/07 update- went back for Friday night sushi and was not disappointed- spent $65 and ate like kings, again! They had the fried green tea ice cream too so hubby was happy. This place is fantastic- the bar was packed so we ate in the dining room, service was excellent. 08/21/07- came for our anniversary- told sushi chef " I leave our meal to your capable hands" -we ATE like kings, better than I've ever eaten before, even here!! 1) live scallops with sweet soy 2) seared salmon sprinkled with lemon juice and scallions 3) tuna with extra wasabi 4) scallop handroll (crispy goodness) 5) unagi roll 6) our favorite rainbow roll with shiso 7) fresh dessert - $86 and worth every dime- I highly recommend letting your chef show you what he can do here, it's a memorable experience !

I don't even feel like giving them any star... We went there on a week day afternoon, the whole place was almost empty (1, 2 tables top), some old lady with crappy face(I assumed it's the waitress) sat us somewhere in the back, 5, 10 min went by, no one ever came to check on us or take our order. We finally walked out. Our friend told us that same thing happened to them, and the owners seems only want to serve people they know... what da freak!!??
(1)Toby C.
I definitely agree with the review from Angelica. I had almost an identical experience and thought exactly the same thing! Are you sure you yelpers aren't confusing this place with Sushi ZONE, also in Campbell?? No need to re-state the same details as that post, but basically, poor service, poor quality,
(1)Kathryn L.
This restaurant is one of the only actual Japanese family run and owned sushi joints in the area - but they are the best in Campbell for sure. They are consistent and delicious. Try their hamachi kama appetizer to be different. Umami!
(4)Kathleen L.
I will admit, I am biased since I'm a local and they know me here so, when the sushi takes a while to be done, I really don't care since I'm enjoying myself anyway. But truthfully, their sushi is pretty darn amazing. They have some pretty creative rolls - the Raging Tuna is one of my favorites if you like fried rolls. The Vegas and Alisu rolls are also pretty awesome. The Hamachi Delight is a new roll that I hope sticks around since I LOVE IT. Their prices on their sushi rolls are low... as is the cold premium sake - yum! They can get really busy on Fri / Sat and don't take reservations so try to go early if you can. And while the service can be slow, and the place isn't super nice - the sushi is quality and TASTEY. Definitely my favorite local sushi place to visit on Friday nights.

i'm a doctor, and i have a patient who is this old japanese guy from the old country. one time i asked him, where do you go for real authentic japanese food and sushi, and he told me the only place in the south bay he will eat is sushi zono. i tried it and low and behold he was right. try the albacore appetizer..it's pure magic
(5)Scott C.
I ate here because of the reviews and even their spot in the Mercury News.. BUT for me honestly, it wasn't that great. Granted I was going in with high expectations, the sushi that I ordered (hamachi, amaebi, hotate) were just normal. I would say that their maguro (tuna) was unique because it was spotted tuna. And the staff was friendly and accommodating. Overall, I'm not sure it's worth going back their again.
(2)Yasmin R.
attentive customer service. fresh sushi. family dining. it's a pretty good spot and I've dined here a few times already, I appreciate a good sushi joint that can still serve good tasting sushi after 7pm!

My first time coming here was not a pleasant experience. There wasn't a long wait considering it was a Friday night; however, the waitress stuck my boyfriend and I in the corner where we were pretty squshed. Since we were in the corner, it took the waitress 15 minutes to give us menus.. maybe because she forgot about us but who knows what was up with her. Then, it took another 15 minutes just to take our order so thats 30 minutes just to order food!! I was shocked! I actually had to wave them down to tell them we were ready. Third, they did not give my boyfriend any eating utensils when the food came out! I would have to say it was HORRIBLE service. The food itself was delicious! But minus 2 stars for their service. The waitresses need to get their act together!!!!
(3)Anne P.
In my opinion, the perfect chirashi would contain the following ingredients: *multiple slices of sake, hamachi, saba, hotate, maguro, unagi, amaebi, tamago, white tuna *ikura (salmon roe) *slices of sweeten braised shiitake mushroom *pickled radish or daikon *seaweed salad (optional) This restaurant's chirashi had the following pros and cons, relative to my notion of the perfect chirashi: Pros: Very fresh fish, smoked salmon, sake, maguro, hamachi, tamago, seared white tuna tataki Cons: not much variety. No unagi, no ikura or even tobiko, no daikons or mushrooms, no saba

Wow- G-R-E-A-T sushi! My taste buds were surely parading about! The rolls are amazing- definitely 4 star quality! Be aware- the service and ambiance unfortunately are very sub-par; 2 star at most. We waited an hour- yes a full hour- for 4 rolls. When our rolls finally came we immediately ordered 4 more and again- an hour later they arrived. Thank goodness we weren't on a date, we arrived at 7p.m. and left just before 10 p.m. Another gripe I have is that this place seemed to cater a lot towards children- do children even eat sushi?? They had construction paper signs and pictures taped up all over the walls identifying different rolls you could order- very odd. I will surely be back but I might suggest the takeout menu.

I normally give a few days before I review a restaurant. But I want to review this now because it pisses me off how bad the service is!!!! Old japanese lady doesnt have a server seat us but instead just points to an open table. Okay so we sit down. Gf has to use the restroom, while i sit there no waitress comes back and drops off menus or asks what i want to drink. Gf comes out, i got use the restroom to wash my hands. Still no menus. We both sit there, while 2 other tables get seated by waitresses and have menus. So my gf gets up and gets two menus, both tables get their orders taken. FINALLY a waitress comes and takes our order. We got our water with our soup and salad. Then we notice how fast everyone's food comes out. We wait literally 45 mins and our food finally comes out, we only ordered a nigiri special and hamachi maki and uni. The rolls here are tiny, the fish looks oddly discolored, my gfs uni was not fresh, it was dark colors and mushy looking. i wanted to get the hell out of there ASAP, so I got up and got the bill or i probably would have waited another 30 mins for it! I'm sorry but why the hell is this like the 3rd japanese owned restaurant that ive been to in the south bay with bad fish and crappy service! this is my second time here and i definitely would never step foot in this restaurant again!!!!!!!

I came here on a weekday at night. the plac was pretty dead inside, but the sushi chefs were still happy and welcome to have us eat. We ordered a bento box that was pretty average and a couple sushi rolls. Nothing really special about this place, but the thing that stood out the most was our waitress. She didn't seem very kind, as if we got to the restaurant too late?! I don't know, but she didn't seem to welcome us like the sushi chefs did. Place was okay, but i dont' think i'll be back. There are many other sushi places that I can go to with great deals and better customer service
(2)Chris S.
The rolls are good here and the prices are reasonable, also the green tea ice cream with fried pound cake is fantastic. The service was just a little off though. Our waitress was very good at first but we became less of a concern once a big table she was helping arrived. I can understand that is where the money is, but her other tables should not suffer because of it. Though our wait times for things was not unbearable once the big table showed up, they were longer then they should be.

What was that extra $2 charge for? I have no idea. And it doesn't matter because this was probably my first and last meal at Sushi Zono. I was excited to come here as I had heard good things about this place. Luck put me in the area and with my sister visiting as well; this was an ideal place to stop for lunch that day. We arrived a little early and they weren't yet open. They offered to let us take a table and wait but we went back outside so as not to be in the way. A few minutes later, a good sized party headed in the door ahead of us to be the first customers of the day. After perusing menu choices we both decided on chef's choice sushi lunch for $16. This was fairly pricey compared to other sushi lunches I have had in the area, but new place, visiting family, let's go for it. We both asked for green tea as our only beverage and then made the admonishment of "no saba." This may have been our downfall. While I pretty much have enjoyed all the sushi I have ever set out to try, I already know that the more fishy tasting saba is not to my liking. There was a bit of wait which was kind of strange considering the place just opened and we were among the first diners in the place; but at last our meals arrived. The platters looked yummy and we asked our server for a quick rundown on certain nigiris that were unfamiliar. The chef did not give us any saba, however, I failed to be impressed by any of the other items. The smoked salmon was new to me (for sushi that is) and was not really my fave. I prefer that as lox on bagels. The scallop was new to me and was just "ok" as far as sushi goes. Everything was edible but was far off the mark for being anything extraordinary. It was one of my least memorable sushi meals in a long time so that was a disappointment. Even more disappointing was the $2 per person charge that showed up on our bill. Not written in the "beverage" spot, I don't think it was meant to be for the tea. if so, $2 per person for green tea is rather steep anyway. That being said all we could figure was that our simple "no saba" request on chef's choice had garnered the additional fee. $18 for this sushi lunch was definitely not worth it so unfortunately I don't plan on returning to Sushi Zono.
(2)Alison H.
The service here is absolutely atrocious. Once you are seated, you are forgotten about. I've visited here 3 times, twice we got a table and waited about 15-20 min before someone came over. It was a weekday so the restaurant was not busy. The sushi is very good, so the last time I went, we sat at the bar, hoping we would have better service. No such luck. Although our sushi order was taken quickly, we waited 20 minutes for a roll and 15 minutes for the rest of our order. Our soup and drinks arrived after the sushi. Bottom line: Great sushi, but be prepared to wait and don't go there hungry.

I've been coming to Sushi Zono for over 10 years. My friend and I try to have sushi once a month to catch up and have a good meal. I've had almost everything on their menu and I can't complain about anything. My favorite is the Art or Gwen roll. The Alisu roll is delicious too. Their udon always comes out SUPER HOT (temperature) which is good and is so tasty! I love the flavor of the broth. I have only sat at the bar once but hear the owner/sushi chef always chatting up with customers. He seems very open and friendly.

I was having a sushi craving the other night so I reached out to my network of friends for suggestions regarding sushi bars. I took Celeste's recommendation and went to Sushi Zono partly because it was in close proximity to mi casa. Sushi Zono has the typical sushi bar atmosphere. It's located in a small strip mall with a decent size dining room and sushi bar that can seat roughly 8. Upon entering the place it was full which I took as a good sign. When I first glanced at the sushi bar it appeared full but these two women at the end kept looking at me and motioned me to come over. As I start to walk over I hear, "bom chicka wah wah" oh wait different story. There was one more seat at the bar that was available and they invited me to sit down. Apparently the nice young women I sat next to are Sushi Zono regulars. It seemed like everyone at the sushi bar were regulars. Speaking from experience it's always good to know the regulars. I'm glad I ran across a few friendly ones. It made my experience that much better. Anyway, they informed me that Sushi Zono was one of the best places around and provided me with a couple of recommendations. I did take their advice and ordered the Tataki and Hong Roll along with Unagi and Sashimi. The food was excellent! I've never had Tataki so I wasn't sure what to expect. The Tataki was a seared albacore marinating in a broth served with onions. It was great. I'm glad my new Sushi Zono friends made the recommendation because I will definitely order it again. The Sashimi was extremely fresh, like biting into a fish while it's still on the line. The unagi was delicious. The Hong Roll, named after the head sushi chef, was very good. All in all I had a wonderful experience at Sushi Zono. I would rate Sushi Zono 4.85 with the drawback being they close at 9:30pm. Are you serious? 9:30 on a Saturday night. I've always been under the impression you can't make money if you're close.

I ate my first solid foods at Sushi Zono over thirty something years ago. I still eat here and my kids (first on the way) will eat here too. Everything on the menu is delicous because everything has been ordered twice to three times over. Ika Fry is by far my favorite, what else ... Hamachi Kama, Chicken Chosen, Sukiyaki, Katsu-don yeah pretty much everything. I can write more but I think that I would just be repeating what everyone else has already taken the time to write.
(4)Angie M.
It was a good sign when we got there and it seemed like everyone was a regular; there was lots of chit chat among the diners and staff. What we ordered: Sake - We just got the house stuff warm, it went down a little too well :) Beer - Kirin on tap (yay) Ika fry - Delicious squid... get the spicy Sashimi - very fresh Tuna Carpaccio - Soooo good... they have some magical sauce on it that was excellent Hamachi Maki & Spicy Tuna - Always my sushi standards, very fresh. Vegas Roll - You have to love deep-fried sushi Special Spider Roll - I just love soft shell crab scallop and uni nigiri - The scallops were so sweet and HUGE! Uni tasted like the ocean.. just lovely. Deep Fried Ice Cream - A great way to end a meal.. it's pretty big and we were able to split one order among the 4 of us. ...and if you order at least $7/person worth of sushi, you get salad and miso soup for free... YAY! :) For the quality of food, the price was very decent.... spent about $36 a person with tip. Don't let the strip mall fool you, this place is great! :)

I came back again last night and this place has a 2/2 for goodness. Here are a few items which stood out to me. Hamachi cheeks - I never knew Hamachi fish were so big. Growing up, my mom always gave me the little fish cheeks and I have learned that it's the most tender part of the fish. Now, having a nice big fish cheek that melts in your mouth is like nirvana. Definitely a must try if you're into smooth goodness. Sauteed Calamari - this is the first place that I've been to which has this. I'm usually ordering the typical fried calamari and have become accustomed to the chewiness of calamari. When you have the first bite of this calamari, you would realize that it's not chewy, but is really soft and tender goodness. Spray some lemon on it and bam! You're good to go. Hong roll - I specifically wanted to try this roll because of other Yelpers. If you like a nice kick to your sushi, I would definitely recommend this. The spicy tuna on top is definitely a notch spicier than normal spicy tuna, and everything tastes fresh. Order this only if you enjoy spicy food. Kirin beer on tap - I'm not much of a beer drinker anymore, but my bf loves it. And I heard Kirin is rare on tap. The best way to describe it is there is semi-sweetness to it (not like the bitter Sapporo, yuck!).

I'll keep it simple. Easy 5 stars

We came here about a month ago. I know this place has been here a long, LONG time but I never came in until then.It deserves its longevity. Really great food. I got the California Roll and the Bagel Roll (? name?- it had smoked salmon and cream cheese). Very fresh - the Bagel Roll had a little bit too much cream cheese on it, but that's just my personal preference. Whenever I get an actual bagel I scrape most of the cream cheese off of it anyways. Hubby got the spider roll and the Saba (macekrel) and the Unagi (eel), which he let me have a bite of, yummy! He got some other roll that I don't remember now. We also got the Ika Fry, which many other people have mentioned. Yes, it was tasty, but I'd probably save room for something else next time. A little pricey, but we ordered a lot of stuff to try since it was our first visit.

We've been going to Sushi Zono since it was Nakagawa's in '83. The food is always top notch and the fish is flavorful. I think they have the best gyoza anywhere. The tempura is good, not too greasy, and I like the batter. My only negative (and the reason why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars) is because the service can occasionally be spotty. When you sit tatami in the back, you sometimes get forgotten completely and have to chase down someone for refills. This doesn't happen often, but it has happened more than once. When the service is good, it's GREAT. I miss all the servers from over the years....Terri, Yuen. The bento boxes are really good, and they don't give the cheap cuts of chicken or beef for the teriyaki either. I think the soup broth is very flavorful and can eat huge amounts of their salad. It's the same dressing since day one. It's a tangy, sesamey dressing. Now I'm hungry thinking about it. They're good with kids but they don't provide crayons or anything, so you have to bring their entertainment. They're great for large parties. We've gone with 14 people. And it's nice for a date night.

For my sushi eating needs, I use to go to Totoro off of Saratoga. After two visits here, this is my new place for sushi. The appetizers are really unique and delicious. I would really recommend the yellow fin tuna cheeks ($9, but worth a try!) and the Ahi tuna in the ginger/onion sauce (the fish is rare, but seriously try it because it's delicious!). The sushi is all very delicious and very reasonably priced. What I really liked about this place over Totoro is the large selection of cheaper sushi rolls, which gives you the option to order a few different ones. Totoro rolls, although really good, tended to be way too huge to fit in your mouth and more expensive. You are also given free miso soup and a tiny salad for ordering at least 7 bucks in sushi at sushi zono.. and i love miso soup. :) The people here are all very nice too! I only give this place 4 stars because when this place gets a bit busy the service can be pretty lacking...

actually very good, even on a Monday. tried a bunch of things, nigiri special, chirashi, sashimi moriawase, softshell crab, extra uni, and 1 roll. some pieces a little heavier on wasabi, and more vinegary rice. also ikura wasn't the best, but most sashimi pieces pretty good and reasonable price.

Great place to grab a bite to eat. But there are certain things that you need to understand. First of all, if you sit at the sushi bar, don't expect to get served until after you finish your miso soup and salad. Secondly, ask always ask whats fresh... they tend have some really good fresh fish, crab/lobster, uni.... We used to come by this place every couple of weeks, when I worked around the corner. I miss their Las Vegas Roll, and deep fried Ice Cream. the staff is friendly, but is mostly family or friends. So service can be a little slow on a busy Friday or Satuday night.... Among the medium sized sushi places... Zono is definitely the best.

This place is great. The food is well above average for the price point, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and sake is cheap. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that the walls are covered with handwritten "try our whatever-roll" signs which would detract a bit from the atmosphere if you were on a date or something. But it's perfect for going out in a group. There were 6 of us and we ate till we were stuffed and left half a bottle of sake on the table, for under $30 a person. And to top it off, the waitress offered us homemade chocolate chip cookies that she had made for one of the regular's birthday. I think I need to become a regular here...

Cute lil venue. Food was fresh and delicious. Not bad for a Sushi. The servers were very cute and had some good suggestions on what to get. VEggie Friendly: Yes, made to order. Age Tofu was good.

This place was introduced to me by my co-worker. A lot of "marker announcement with the sushi rolls" on the walls. Overall this place was decently priced though the Spider Roll was $9.00?? Isn't it usually $8.50? Anyways, it's hidden inside a plaza mall in Campbell. Service was pleasant and decor was really minimal.

This is probably one of the best sushi houses I've ever been to. The ambiance might not be as great as other places, but that is no way to determine the quality of the food nor the experience. Firstly, I've had Dragon Rolls from a handful of sushi houses, but even if it was a dollar or two more in price than in other areas, it made up for the price difference. It was one of the best rolls I've had, hands down. The Nigiri Sushi was on point! I had a Unagi Nigiri, & it was fresh & one of the more flavorful of its kind I've ever had. I think the best part about my experience is the waitress. My friend who took me here is a regular & had made great relationships with the staff, & she was the nicest (not to mention, cutest) waitress I've ever had. And that alone, I'm speaking for the entire staff--they're generally customer pleasing & for that, stars, stars, stars.
(5)Tiff T.
I love coming here for their sushi because it is fresh, quality food and conveniently located near my work. Every time I'm here, I always see their regular customers where the staff even know them by their names (just think of the show Cheers). The place itself is small, clean, family own and operates. The ambiance may not be great but their rolls are super good. I always order the Dragon Roll which is my favorite, Rainbow Roll, Spider Roll and their fried Spicy Tuna Roll. For freshness, quality food at affordable price, this place deserves 5 stars.

Campbell surprisingly has quite a few Sushi restaurants within a 1 mile radius from each other, Kazoo, Michi's, TGI's, Sato's, but my favorite destination for Sushi is hands down Sushi Zono. Now, I will preface it with this, if you're the Sushi Roll type person then this might not be for you. Don't get me wrong, they have some awesome rolls but I go to Zono for the fresh fish and seafood that you might not get at every sushi restaurant. One recommendation is to sit at the bar, way better experience since you get your food more promptly. The chefs are also great, they've definitely opened my eyes to new things. Now, why Zono is so high on my list as far as sushi goes? It comes down to FRESHNESS and a slightly different sushi experience. Again, they offer the typical bento boxes, Teriyaki Chicken, Shrimp Tempura, the different variety of rolls but it's the non mainstream food that gets me coming back. Things I've ordered: 1) Aji Sashimi (mackerel) with Ponzu sauce - Never had mackerel since to me it has a very fishy smell. Not the aji here tho, its not fishy AT ALL and the ginger, soy, and rice vinegar dipping sauce is so awesome. I order this everytime I'm here. 2) Sea Trout (it is better than salmon) - Never seen it offered anywhere else and super fresh 3) Fish Cheeks - Deep fried and so tender 4) Fresh Soft Shell Crab - Still moving when we picked it out, tossed in light flour and deep fried. 5) Fresh Abalone Sashimi - Still moving until it was killed with a salt rub, sliced and served as sashimi 6) Uni (my favorite) - always, always been fresh 7) Great House Sake ($5) Tip: Ask the Chef's what's new and give it a try and see if you like it. Sometimes, they'll let you sample if you ask nicely.

This is my first 2 star review. This is why- I think the sushi was very fresh and tasty. Loved it But I think the sushi was way too small!!!!! Any other place I order a lot less and Im full. This place I left hungry. The service was the worst I have ever received in my life. No exageration. I cant even let myself come back to this place. FYI I live very close to Sushi Zono so I would be going out of my way not to eat here. I arrived at 7:15. The place was slow upon my arrival, not many customers were here. I asked for water when I got seated but I waited 45 minuets. They took an order from people who got seated after me. I had to wait in the meaanwhile. Not just a few minuets....But for a very long time. I was served dinner before customers who had arrived before me and ordered before me. I felt sooo bad for them! I got sushi 45 minuets later. When the food arrived, I realized the portions were small so I ordered more food. I waited another 30 minuets, it didnt come so I got up and left. They were obviously short staffed. Customers did begin arriving after my arrival. It is still no excuse. They didnt pay attention to details eigher. they needed to be told to bring plates and wasabi. I can think of so many other places Id rather go! Hopefully they will take this review and make some improvements.
(2)Venita M.
Same delicious food, only this time not only did they already know my order, but also thanked me personally for my Yelp review! I felt a little sheepish, but appreciated that they're paying attention. :) PLUS, they put my onions IN the rolls this time to make them easier to eat. :)
(5)Courtney Y.
I'm definitely a fan of Sushi Zono. There are two items on the menu that i ALWAYS order: Miso black cod and Ika Fry. Like someone else said it totally is like Crack! It's not like most calamari's and isn't fried in a heavy batter. They must marinate it in some kid of sauce maybe dust it with a little flour and lightly fry it. Just squeeze some lemon and dip in soy sauce and you pretty much have heaven on a plate. I've also come here for my birthday once. We ordered pitchers of beer and my family got the dinner for two or three it came with a TON of food. My Dad shared it with one or two of my cousins and they couldn't finish it. And we're not talking about light eaters here. They're usually the ones that finish off our thanksgiving dinners. So... you know it was a lot of food.
(5)Bill C.
My first sushi love in the South Bay... nostalgia wants me to give it at least one more star, but I think 3 is about right. The fish here is better than average and the portions are ample. It's the usual stuff (toro, hamachi, sake, etc.), but occasionally they get something unusual. You must order the ika (squid) fry. Zono does it better & differently than almost every other sushi joint - they don't bread and fry the squid, instead they pan fry it. Very, very good, especially the spicy version. Miso cod (black sable or whatever we're calling it now) is also a nice choice. I always opt for the Art Roll (scallops) and a few others are quite good, too.
(3)Classy L.
It kills me to only give this place 3 stars because I have been coming here for a long time, and really used to love it but the service as well as the sushi quality has gone way down hill. Honestly, the service is pretty bad these days and I ordered some take out sushi a few weeks ago ( I know take out is never as good as when you eat there) but I live down the street, so it was quick. How bad coudl it be? Well, it was bad I pretty much threw more than half out - and its not cheap either!! It tasted way to fishey fo rme. I got food poisioning at raw fish before and the taste brought back memories. I have noticed though, even when eating there, the quality isnt that great. I pretty much stick to my usual. The vegas roll. that is my fav. If it wasn't for my friends and family and the close proximity to my house I would probably skip it for a while. As it is, the takeout fiasco had made me not want to go back for a while.
(3)Kelly W.
Two words. Ika Crack. Ika Crack is actually called "Ika Fry" on their menu, the most amazingly lightly fried calimari I have EVER had. However my friends and I call it "Ika Crack" because it's as addictive and amazing as crack. (I'd imagine.) And their big fried rolls are awesome in a non-authentic-but-full-of-delicious-goodness kinda way. Throw in a poke appetizer, and you have a dinner made in heaven. In fact... I think I'll go back tomorrow night. Yum.

This is my all time favorite Japanese place. The atmosphere is wonderful and the wait staff is always friendly. I love the teriyaki, udon, and tempura. They are closed on sunday which is a bummer but the rest of the time, my wife and I always want to go here for our japanese food cravings. One of the wait staff there, Kimi is always especially nice to us and even made us a wedding present!!! that says alot about the place. If you are looking for a nice family run business, please go no further. How many places would do something like this for you??? I usually order beef teriyaki and they always cook it to my medium well specifications. My wife loves the tempura and Kimi even brings her extra tempura crispies to put in her soup. They do have specials from time to time and recently we had the deep fried green tea ice cream. It was delicious!! It was tempura fried with pound cake and ice cream perfectly inside not even melted :) cant go wrong there. Anyways if you live the in area, go and check Sushi Zono out.
(5)Rob G.
Super fresh nigiri sushi. We had the Nigiri Deluxe with some eel roll, hamachi and 5 pieces of super high quality fish. Big pieces too, not the typical thin slice you get at other places. The kid's menu was tasty and very reasonable. The place was a bit noisy and messy, but with kids, that works just fine. Would go back for sure
(4)Kendall C.
Best Sushi in town...I've become a regular since my boyfriend showed me this place!
(5)Laura S.
I just went here for dinner and it was great! I tried the beef & chicken terrayki and both were delicious (no funky grissle either, love that!) I also tried the CA, salmon skin, and dynamite roll and all were fab. One of the items in my combo box was gyoza. They weren't too fried, but still tasted good. I liked how they weren't so fried because they didn't feel as unhealthy to eat.
(5)Charles O.
I like this place, but i really cant get that water stain that was on the roof out of my mind. Its probably gone by now, but while i was there it was giant and seemed to be growing at an insane rate.
(4)Lindsay C.
This has become my favorite place to go for Japanese food. I actually don't eat sushi, but I love their tempura and teriyaki chicken. It can get extremely busy so make reservations or get there early. Service is friendly and the food absolutely delicious!
(5)Winona J.
Went back recently and made a beeline for the door after waiting 5 minutes to get seated. Without a menu. Waited another 10 minutes for someone to walk by and say they would be right back. Mondays are not the night to go here. The sushi bar was empty and the staff is moving as if they are underwater. UGH! So I went back. The sushi makes up for the rudeness. Fair prices and very fresh. The trick is to eat there. Then they kiss your ass. I watched them be pretty mean to the people coming in for takeout. Also another time I took takeout I was charged twice for one item and waited 49 minutes after I arrived at the 20 minutes I was told it would take.

So my friend says to me, let's go to Sushi Zono because it is close to my house. The reasoning didn't sound good enough- so I checked yelp! I read something about good sushi, reasonable prices, and beer. I was in! And as it goes, yelp was right!!! Pitchers of beer and good sushi!! Right on. Service was pretty good, she sort of fell off at the end. For two of us it was $60 with plenty of sushi and 1 pitcher of beer. I think $30 a person is pretty reasonable for alcohol and sushi. That includes tip too. We had the spider roll, rainbow roll, shrimp tempura roll, and a tempura appetizer. All real good and fresh. The bathroom was 5 star! One stall like a home bathroom and nice and clean with good smelling soap.
(5)Mary M.
Love everything here but especially the tataki and the raging tuna. Takes a long time to get seated on busy nights (which seems to be most nights) but if you arrive after the rush, you can get a great meal, and they don't rush you out.
(4)Samson W.
I went there yesterday for lunch with my two bosses and a coworker. Ordered the bento box, which was wonderful. Also wonderful was the green tea ice cream. I would highly recommend it, if you are in the area.

Mixed bag here. The food gets a 4, the service to customer gets a 0, so average is 2. I cannot believe the aloofness and disregard for the customer here. I was greeted, and since I was alone, the hostess asked me to sit at the bar. I like that because you can see the sushi made by the chefs. She asked what I wanted to drink. Once I got my soda, I looked around. The hostess was running back and forth between the tables and the kitchen. Like, I did not have a menu. The sushi chef was busy talking to a customer at the end of the bar. So, I am sitting there thinking what the heck is going on. I finally ask for a menu after tracking down the hostess. I was basically ignored throughout the rest of the meal. I did order, and the sushi chef just kept talking to the customer at the end of the bar. Unbelievable. I finally ordered and was delivered some nice tasting sushi. I had the scallop, shrimp and CA roll maki. Very tasty sushi. Everything made up fresh when you order. Wonderful sashimi and all the rolls were delicious. So I finished eating, and then had to track down the hostess again to get my check. She never once came around to ask how I was doing, or if I wanted anything else or a refill. Just the worst customer service I have experienced, ever! I paid the bill (no tip of course) and left. I guess if you are a regular, you get service. It is obvious to me that they don't cater to new people. Not recommended!
(2)Jaime O.
friendly neighborhood style place. Comfortable to go there and comfort food available. I like it here and consider it a go-to place. The fish is pretty goood which is a pretty tall order in these economic times. Family firendly and local. I enjoyed the chirashi. They also carry mochi ice cream. Although for me, I'll skip the mochi and finish off with the salmon skin handroll - spicy if you please. I'll be back.
(4)Mike H.
This is one of my favorite sushi places in the south bay. They serve both traditional nigiri, along with the crazier Americanized rolls "Dragonroll, Hong Roll, etc." which are actually pretty good here. Their fish is always fresh, properly seasoned, and delicious. Outstanding sushi. Prices are very fair, and there is a nice locals feel to the place. Service can be hit-or-miss. It's a little weird having to pay upfront, instead of giving the payment to the waitress.
(4)von c.
I've been to this restaurant twice. The first time was with a fairly large group. The service was horrible! However, this last visit service wise was much better. They were quick and friendly and got the orders right. The food was ok. Nothing to brag about. Prices are good for the wallet. The Poki we ordered was bad, literally. It had pieces of octopus that were spoiled and shouldn't have even gone into the dish. The chicken and beef teriyaki were a bit over cooked. The futo-maki was great as were some of the other rolls our table ordered. If I do go back to this place I'll stick to the rolls.
(3)Lillie F.
Haru does sushi. He was doing sushi when no one was doing sushi and his is always fresh and looking good. We have been coming here since the 1980s and the only down side is that it has gotten so popular you have to be a bit patient. But patience is rewarded everytime. In all these years I have never gotten a piece of sushi I would reject. In a way, I should curse Sushi Zono for making me so picky! I try to smile, but too many of the trendy places of sushi that tastes like its been sitting in the back of a dark shoe closet gathering smells. We usually stick to the straight stuff here, why waste good sushi smashed up and rolled in a big gob? However, got to love the Gwen Roll, one of my secret binges with a glass of ice cold saki when I am feeling low. Update 11/05 Friends came back from there and said it just is not the same. Food took forever, was very salty, and the table next to them so rowdy they could not hear their own voices.
(3)Alden G.
Been here several times and have always enjoyed it. The food is pretty good, and the service is acceptable. It is a little small so the wait can sometimes be long, but overall it's usually not that bad. The parking can sometimes be a pain because they are located in the corner of a small strip mall, but this can be overlooked. Their prices are pretty reasonable for the portion size that you get. All in all it is an ok sushi place if you are in the area
(3)Amanda F.
I love love LOVE this place. great food for a very reasonable price. If you buy $7.00 (I think) worth of food you get soup and salad. They're specials are always fun, and the guys making the sushi are always laughing and talking to the regulars sitting on the bar. I love going to this place for lunch, and would recommend it to anyone looking for quality, affordable sushi!
(5)Sobrina T.
A group of 4 of us came for dinner on a Thursday night. The service was terribly slow. The food was ok, but nothing amazing. I had the beef teriyaki/tempura dinner combo. It was ok-priced for what it was. The decor/ambiance was so-so. It is located in the very corner of a strip mall type place, the kind one sees all over Campbell. That's really all I have to say about it.
(2)J V.
Fresh sushi and welcoming wait-staff. I only gave it 3 stars however because it wasn't wow.... I wasn't utterly amazed.I will say the food was fresh and the water glasses were always taken care of. I had the hot sake which was good they didn't have a large selection but I'm not a connoisseur and it was just fine. I also ordered the fresh sake (salmon) because that is how I define a place's freshness. It was fabulous and they didn't skimp on the fish portion. We tried a few of there rolls but I think they are comparable to most places.I think the rolls at TGISushi are a little tastier and creative. However it's bigger than their restaurant. So its a nicer establishment to enjoy a conversation and eat with a little more space around you. I recommended it for a quiet 3rd date nite not as elegant as Blowfish but comfortable enough for friends to enjoy a conversation.
(3)Giles B.
Having eaten here many times, I have to say you just can't go wrong. The fish is fresh, the service is friendly, and the price is reasonable. You must try the special oysters... albacore and salmon are personal favorites, and the rolls are good as well. All in all, a great place.
(5)Miranda J.
My mom and I are the main ones of the family who eat sushi. So my mom and I had been going to Sushi Zono for years. I always had my birthday dinners there and we'd always sit at the bar and we'd say Feed Us! and we would leave soo satisfied! Well I had moved way out of the area for awhile, and then moved back. My boyfriend and I had gotten together and he was the type of guy that would only eat a california roll. So I made a deal, he could order a california roll but he had to try 3 different things on the menu. He ended up liking everything else better! Sushi Zono is the only Sushi place we will go to! When we walk in we're treated like we're the only one's there. No better place than Sushi Zono!
(5)Vanessa L.
Sushi Zono is one of my favorite sushi place (although I've been going to TGI lately - shhhh!! don't tell :) ) when I first moved out here 4 years ago. A couple of my friends and I will meet here regularly every weekend just to get our sushi fix. The fish was fresh and the prices were pretty reasonable - you definitely get your money's worth. For example, I went with 2 guys (who can eat and drink!!) and I can do my share as well (okay, with eating but not the drinking ;) hehehe) and our bill would come out to about $85 which included 2 pitchers of beer, 2 appetizers, 4 to 5 sushi rows and a bunch of nigiri!! I definitely recommend the black cod, it's delicious but make sure you order it the minute you sit down because it does take a while to cook. And the ika fry (sp?) - which is the spicy squid, it's delicious..but you can also order it non-spicy but what's the point?? :) - I haven't had a roll here that wasn't good...but if you do go here, you'll definitely have to try the Art Roll: Scallop Mix, Avocado, Tuna, Tobiko, & Spicy Sauce - it's one of my favorites!! And believe me, you won't be disappointed.
(4)Micah J.
Great sushi. If you can, get a seat at the bar, and if it's not too busy, strike up a conversation with the chef. The chef is great and has great advice for off-the-menu options. The only negative issue I have is that when they're busy, you could be there for awhile. However, I won't count that against them.
(5)Kristi D.
We went on a Friday night during peak hours and the place was full. +1 got seated right away in a cozy booth. +1 for good acoustics. -1 for uncomfy plywood substance that would shake constantly. +1 for on-the-house miso soups and salad. +1 for good prices. +1 for awesome attentive waitress. -1 for extremely long wait to get food. +1 for on-the-house CA rolls to compensate for the wait. +1 what we tried was very yummy. Technically that' 5 stars, not 4 - but I need to wait until I try the sashimi to add one more! In short, I'd go back. :)
(4)Lars R.
Can't really comment on the sushi much because I despise just about everything that comes out of the ocean, but I dig teriyaki and that kind of thing.... They've got this dinner for two meal that gets you all the standard appetizers like California rolls and gyoza that builds up to teriyaki beef and chicken and ends with green tea ice cream. The ice cream is of particular note as they get it from Marianne's Ice Cream in Santa Cruz, its one of the most richest, creamiest ice creams I ever had and my wife and I go to Sushi Zono frequently just for the ice cream since the only other place to get it that I know of is Zanoto's Market and they never have it in green tea. Another thing Sushi Zono has exclusively is their salad dressing.... I wish they'd bottle it and sell it, because its my favorite dressing I've ever had anywhere. I also dig the beef chosen quite a bit and when I go to sushi zono for lunch I like to get that instead of the teriyaki (no substitutions on the dinner for two unfortunately.)
(5)Kelly T.
I have been to this place once before on a lunch date and had tried the Vegas roll, a must-try stated by the previous posts regarding this restaurant, and was pretty impressed with it's massive size and taste. So last night we came here for dinner and wasn't too hungry so just ended up the Art Roll - it has a scallop mix, tuna and a hot sauce over the top, and was very pleasantly surprised by the unique taste - I was impressed. D got the Mackerel Sashimi and almost died of ecstasy every time he took a bite of it. The only issue I have with this place is the service is really SLOW. And for a sushi place, I'm used to things coming pretty quickly, especially when the place is empty. The last time I was here for lunch, it took forever as well and we were the only patrons in there! I had to explain to my boss why my lunch went over 1 1/2 hours for one freakin' sushi roll and a bento box - and I work literally a block away. Just work on moving your butt and I'll keep coming.
(4)Jessica N.
There's a really big menu here! I decided on the Sukiyaki Nabe, which was huge! It was pretty good, very filling. We also had unagi rolls, which were very fresh and very good. However, I can't recommend the Golden Scallop nigiri; it's like a "scallop salad", and was a little fishy.
(3)Shea S.
My boyfriend and I are big sushi fans and we have tried lots of places. Sushi Zono has delicious rolls(love the Hong Roll), great prices and their servers are always friendly and sweet. This is by far our favorite place. We always leave here very happy.
(4)Lisa M.
By far the the worst service ever experiences...It was like amateurs that dont know how to run a restaurant. First it smells moldy and dusty when you first walk in..no waitress if your lucky to make eye contact to get service. sushi wasn't even that great... blah Michi's would of been a better choice.
(1)Julia C.
This is our go-to sushi place. The fish is always fresh and there are lots of other goodies on the menu. Spicy squid, tuna carpaccio, hamachi kama - all good. The service is decent but it depends on how busy they are and which waitress you get. We are regulars so we usually get good service regardless. The chef is friendly. If it's your first time, I'd recommend sitting at the bar.
(5)Joanna M.
Great food, wonderful service. The staff is very friendly, and there are many inventive options from which to choose.
(5)Calvin R.
this place is the secret banger sushi place of the south bay!! prices are ridiculously fair. and the service is usually amazing. i had not been there for months and the lead (?) server came over to us in the corner and said hi to my by name...no idea how she remembered or even knew my name but i was pretty impressed. she checked on us a couple times and she was not even our server. we brought my parents here about a year ago and they are regulars now and sit at the sushi bar every weekend. i seriously love sushi zono. you can go HUGE here for two and not even spend $100 order the poki.
(5)Josh B.
Excellent sushi and teriyaki. Have been going there for 20+ years and its still great food, ok service, reasonable prices, and a very authentic looking Japanese looking atmosphere.
(4)Linda L.
I'm going to try to be as impartial with this review as I can possibly be. First off, we go with friends who have been going here so long that they have developed a relationship with the owners - so we always get top notch service here. I am not a huge seafood eater and am not super partial to sushi cuisine, so I must give a neutral rating because I simply don't know what would be considered good sushi or bad sushi. For the most part, I've always liked what I had here, which is your basic white-person sushi: gyoza, tempura, croquette, beef and chicken. Chinese husband is always in heaven when we go with friends because he gets all the raw fish his heart desires - he's never complained. Took a third family here over the summer and, well, what a night it was. Our prim and proper church-on-Sunday Catholic friend ended up lifting her top several times in front of our waiter (yeah, we were doing sake bombs!). Po' thang (waiter). Our next visit (just the two families), waiter had left - hope he wasn't too traumatized! :) As mentioned earlier, we always get outstanding service and I suspect that is due in large part to the relationship our friends have with this place. Sushi is not cheap! Two families (eight total), rarely come in under $300 (okay, we do typically start off with $140 bottle of chilled sake - sooooo good!) Son is no longer allowed to go with us because all he eats are gyoza and he's usually good for six or seven orders. At $9 a pop, he's just too expensive to eat here - so we now leave him at home with mac-and-cheese and video games :)
(3)Shirley L.
Not particularly impressed by the service or the food. I had reservations and the hostess just pointed inside to indicate that we should seat ourselves. We sat at an empty table but later she said that we actually had a reserved booth a little bit further down. How were we supposed to know that? We sat down, but there were no menus...took a couple more minutes to get the menus. Salad wasn't that special...just lettuce with some shredded carrots and a not-worth-mentioning dressing. Miso soup, veggie delight roll, and Unagi roll...all were pretty standard.
(3)Ling K.
I've been going here for approximately 2 years and I think the quality of the sushi/sashi has dwindled. It doesn't seem like they use the same quality of fish as in the past. Always order what is indicated as the special "fresh" fish (sushi/sashimi). One day they had ikura that was the indicated as fresh. My friend who used to own a sushi bar said that stuff is never really "fresh". I ordered it and my friend was totally surprised and said he's never tasted ikura that good before. But... we also order hamachi and it wasn't the freshest... We ordered toro, but it was more like chu-toro. Not cool since they were charging toro prices. The non sushi food is just ok. The best item they have is the tempura fried ice cream. They wrap a ball of green tea ice cream with pound cake then dip it in tempura batter and it's fried! Oh yum!!! Sometimes I just go there just to order the tempura ice cream. It gets real warm there in the summer time. I don't think they use the A/C only the ceiling fans.
(3)Genia Y.
One star is even too much!!! Very disappointing experience! I have decided to take my boyfriend for a dinner (this doesn't happen too often). I know a great sushi place in San Jose called (I have decided not to include the name, so noone would think that I am an employee or something) - the BEST sushi ever!!!! But...I wanted to try a new I'll start from the beginning. When we arrived the hostess told us that we cannot be seated because hey don't have a menu for us. I asked if we can at least be seated and have drinks. So we got our drinks - water, and plum wine - no complaints. Then after maybe 10!!! minutes we were offered a menus to look at. We picked some soups and sushi (California roll, some simple tuna roll, and baked Volcano roll which was $13 - the highest price I've seen foe baked sushi). How long do you think it is normally takes to cook that -20-30 min max? We have been sitting there for an HOUR!!!!!! We finished vine and water, and waitress didn't even come to our table to offer another drink!!!! We were thinking about leaving the place, but were thinking that maybe the food would be so delicious that it worth the wait. After an hour we finally got soup, and California and tuna rolls. They were not average...they were below!!! average. Boyfriend tried the noodle soup - after couple spoons he said he can't eat that. I cancelled my Volcano sushi order - I don't even wanted to think about 1. how much more time it will take to cook that 2. for the highest price of baked sushi I would most likely get something uneatable. When we left that place - boyfriend was even telling me that he doesn't feel well after this soup he ate. Oh well, I did try to take him out..surprise with a new place....you can imagine how we both felt after this experience....

I dont' know how it got a 4 star rating on yelp. Maybe campbell-ers don't have many choices when it comes to Japanese food. Out of desperation for Japanese food, I caved to somewhere close-by. It wasn't all bad but it wasn't 4 star worthy. I ordered a dragon roll and hamachi kama. I was having high hopes for the kama since you can't screw it up! Unfortunately, it was over cooked and dry. :( I don't think I would go back there again unless I am in that desperation zone again.

I consider myself something of a sushi snob (for which I have no credentials), and in my opinion Sushi Zono is simply the best sushi restaurant I can find in the South Bay. I think it all starts with the fact that it's a family-owned restaurant: Haru, the owner, has owned the place for 27 years, and has literally hundreds of regulars now who come visit regularly. (Good luck getting a seat at the sushi bar down near him!) His son, Able, works next to him most nights, his daughters can occasionally be seen waiting tables, and his wife is "the boss" and runs the front of the place. Try the Albacore "Tataki" as a starter--combination of sashimi Albacore tuna, onions, and Ponzu sauce. Haru specializes in getting real Japanese ingredients, so wait for the Japanese scallops ("hotate" or "hotategai") or the Japanese "Aji" (mackerel). I'm not a big "roll" person--something of an Americanism, although obviously the Japanese invented them--but the Hong Roll is excellent (named for the gentleman on the end of the sushi bar who produces a prodigious amount of sushi, mostly for the tables). Also, save some room for the Hamachi Kama (yellowtail jaw) or the Japanese Eggroll (salmon, scallion, deep fried, with Ponzu sauce, I think). I am particularly partial to the banana candies up at the register when you pay your check. But if you want a real desert, try the Mochi.

My South Bay favorite for over a decade now. Love their Albacore Tataki Salad: fresh albacore, lightly seared and sliced, arranged around a mound of thinly sliced white onion, in a delicious citrus ponzu-based sauce topped with minced scallions and ginger. If you like rolls of the deep-fried variety, try the Vegas roll: salmon, hamachi, and tuna with avocado rolled nori side-out, lightly rolled in tempura batter and deep fried. Hot crispy goodness on the outside and cool fresh taste on the inside. Sometimes when I'm feeling like I don't exactly deserve anything deep-fried, I'll be good and ask for it plain, not fried (or, when Eibo isn't too busy, he'll even make it rolled in paper-thin cucumber slices instead of the standard nori. Crisp, cool, and refreshing). The Alisu Roll is another favorite: spicy tuna and avocado, rolled rice-out, topped with spicy sauce and tempura crunchies. Delicious. The classic standards are good too, like the simple makis (negihama is my favorite) and the nigiri (we always get at least one order each of the hamachi and the sake nigiri. and then we get some more.) Prices are reasonable, especially for fresh sushi (generally ~$25-$30 for an all-sushi dinner for 2, not bad). Service is great: waitresses will greet customers by name and the owners go out of their way for their clients. (Once on my way out, I asked the owner where they get their delicious green tea ice cream. She spent a full 5 mins on a busy Saturday night searching for the ice cream shop's business card, copied down the contact info for her own records, and gave me the card to keep) Love this place~

Yum! Just had dinner there and I quite enjoyed it. Well the food, but the other guest in the restaurant not so much. I know that the place is small but I hate when other guest are so loud that I cannot even hear what they person across from me is saying. We got the dinner for two. Oh Geez it's a lot of food. CA roll, soup, salad, gyoza, teriyaki chicken and beef, mixed tempura and ice cream! Holy Cow. Did not finish of course. And shouldn't have ate the ice cream, it made my insides cold. Does not suit this cold wet weather at all! Delish food.

This place is so unassuming from the outside! The food is amazing- the fish is always fresh and the atmosphere is so homey and welcoming!! Loyal following and super attentive and friendly service makes this place one of the best sushi restaurants in the south bay, Hands Down!
(5)Christine T.
This place used to be my favorite Japanese place when my DH was just my BF and lived in Campbell... This time around, we ordered the poki to start. DH got katsu donburi and I got some sushi deluxe plate which consisted of hamachi rolls and 6 pieces of nigiri sushi (the usual tuna, salmon, hamachi, mackerel, shrimp and snapper). The poki needed more octopus pieces and I thought the sauce was a tad bit too sweet. DH's katsu was slightly overcooked but overall was still as tasty as usual. My dish was alright - nothing stellar but not too bad either. While the food was just alright, it will be the sentimental value of this place that will bring me back.

I really don't understand the reviews for this place. I was not impressed in any way. My boyfriend and I walked in with an open mind. We had read the reviews on yelp and this place had been recommended by a friend. We started off with the ika fry which was good, but not amazing like everyone else claims. I ordered hamachi kama and the bf got a bento box w/ chicken katsu. His bento was ordinary - just what you'd expect but nothing so great you couldn't find it somewhere else. My hamachi kama on the other hand was dry and over grilled. We set our meals aside and decided to dig into our sushi. There's always one thing you continually order at every sushi place you go to as a way of judging them. Mine is salmon sushi. It's my favorite and hard to mess up. When the sushi arrived we both just stared at the nigiri wondering why the hell it looked the way it did. The color was off, and my bf spend a good amount of time smelling it...the smell was off too. We decided to go ahead and try it anyway and it turned out that they serve smoked salmon instead of fresh salmon. You have no idea how disappointing that was. Why didn't the waitress tell us it would be smoked salmon? Why not serve fresh salmon? I mean, who does that? It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't sushi. Our rainbow roll also had smoked salmon on it, as well as shiso. I pretty much hate shiso (it's a stong Japanese mint) and I've never had shiso on a rainbow roll before so I left it to the bf to finish it off. He took one bite of the roll and realized that they use shiso to mask the nasty and fishy taste of the tuna on the roll. We were pissed that our sushi was essentially not what we ordered. We never would have gotten the rainbow roll if we knew it had shiso on it, and we definitely wouldn't have ordered smoke salmon nigiri. So for all of you sushi fans who enjoy less than mediocre food and wanna-be sushi, Sushi Zono is the place to be!

My boyfriend and I were here last night, and geez! We waited for more than 40 mins for our food. Our barely-coherent server messed up with the order line-up and managed to put ours behind 4 orders that were supposed to be after ours. She admitted that she messed up and kept apologizing and gave the excuse that there were a lot of people in the tatami room - blah blah blah, but this was really irritating since we were hungry and i saw that there were 3 sushi chefs behind the counter instead of their usual 2. It's already terrible if you have to apologize to customers. My boyfriend and i were a minute away from walking out when she finally brought our food. Aaaaaargh Sushi Zono, get your act together! Big BOOO!
(1)amy b.
We city snobbies still can't get over good eats hidden in strip malls! Have been twice now and it hasn't disappointed. Really fresh, great selection and very good service. The sake (my fave) selection is awesome and the sushi chefs can talk a day long about them. A must-go in the South Bay - waaaay cheaper and just as good as the over-rated Blowfish Sushi on Santana Row.

This review is way overdue given that I have been going to this place on and off for 15 years. I am giving them a full 5-stars in the context of the type of restaurant that it is... Make no mistake about it. If you want the premium sushiya experience, with no qualms whatsoever about the price tag, go check out Sakae in Burlingame or Akane in Los Altos. If you are looking for the most exquisitely prepared Kaiseki, go check out Wakuriya in San Mateo or Mitsunobu in Menlo park. Sushi zono is not that kind of place. Sushi Zono is a casual, unpretencioius, Japanese owned, family operated restaurant which you won't break the bank frequenting. No, they don't have live Amaebi, Awabi in a tank or supremely expensive Seki Saba. They won't have the most exotic fishes on the whiteboard, and they don't sell Toro in three grades (Chutoro, Otoro, Kamatoro). Mainly they have the mainstream sushi spread plus the obligatory rolls of an Americanized sushi restaurant. But what they have are of as good a quality as they should be and irreproachably fresh. Just as importantly, they represent a fantastic value for the quality of sushi that they serve. If you sit at the Sushi Bar, you get a complimentary hot towel, miso soup and salad to get you started. Nice hospitality! If you are into Nigiri sushi, the $6.50 uni (2 pcs) are usually fantastic -- definitely #1 Uni, not the usual #2 grade you'll find at this price point. The Maguro (Bluefin) here is usually Mediterranean and not Honmaguro (true atlanic Bluefin). But it is not the pink flesh garbage you may find in the typical roll houses either. I have no problems, given that it is priced accordingly with very decent Toro a pretty good value at $8 (2 pcs). Is it as good as a $22 Otoro cut at Sakae? No, probably not. But very edible by any standards, including mine, and it is the best Toro you'll find in the Bay Area for the price. If you eat Iwashi (sardine) they serve some of the best I have had at any price and this at $2.50 a pair is an absolute steal. Hotate (Scallops) can be pretty good too especially if you are lucky enough to arrive on a day when they have a live batch that came in during the afternoon. The Engawa (Hirame fin) is so-so, but the Hirame is usually pretty good. Be sure to ask for Hirame prepared with freshly grated Himalayan salt and a twist of lemon. The kitchen fare I have had are pretty good too, especially the generous and fairly priced servings of Hamachi Kama (when they have it). The Sukiyaka is decent enough as well. I am usually there for the Sushi, so I must say that I haven't tried every entree of their kitchen food. If you sit at the Sushi Bar, try to grab one of the innermost seats (furthest from the door) so you'll be served by the owner Harunobu san or, on his off days, by his son Abo. Don't be afraid to ask the chef to make you something special that is not on the menu. They do some pretty darn nice appetizer sized creations if asked such as a Aji-Ikura salad with olive oil. If you are dining alone, feel free to ask for a half order of the fresh oysters w/ ponzu starter ($5 for 3 pcs) or Ankimo so you'll have room for more variety. All in all this a restaurant I find myself going back to on a regular basis despite all the high priced establishments that I also have the means to occasionally sample. Maybe that's why they have been around for 20 years and are still going strong in spite of the ordinary fascade and not particularly fancy cuisine.

Great price even more amazing food, will be coming back here again and again.
(5)Jennifer T.
Waitress was very friendly and attentive. Boyfriend and I ordered the Alisu Roll (They really mean SPICY!) and the Dragon Roll. Was surprised at how small the portions were. The pieces were literally bite size. Usually, it takes me at least two bites. However, both were very delicious tasting!
(3)Rina S.
Hidden treasure Beware Dynomite Roll pretty spicy but so good! Great service Cozy atmosphere Special rolls not in menu so make sure to look around the walls to see them TEMPURA GREEN TEA ICE CREAM = BEST EVER! SO GOOD LOVE ME LONG TIME Try to ask for Kimmie aka Kimiko as your waitress she was awesome
(5)Jen M.
I have been going to this place for years, I love it! The food is excellent and the family that owns it are very nice and really are customer oriented. The only negative I would have is it can be slow, so come prepared to have a loooong dinner...but well worth the wait!
(4)Karen C.
Excellent! Came here for lunch and was wow'd. The sushi is fresh, the chefs are outoging and friendly. Next to Michi's it's the best sushi I've found in this area.
(5)Jaynie F.
Here's the good and the not so good of it.... The good is that the sushi was Fresh!! The rolls were delicious. The not so good is that we ordered and stated we would start with a few items and order again. Waitress needed to be asked each time we wanted more tea, instead of being attentive. Then, she drops the bill without a word, when in fact we were not done ordering!! So overall, thumbs up to the sushi chefs and thumbs down for the service! too bad

Rather non-descript sushi restaurant in a strip mall in Campbell. Stopped in for lunch today while I waited for my pedicure appointment. Ordered a combination lunch. For 7.99, you pick two items. I picked gyoza and tuna sashimi. Tuna sashimi was $1 more. Gyoza were fresh and tasty, but not the best ever. The tuna sashimi, however, was tender and perfect melt-in-your mouth sweetness. The pieces were not very large, but it seemed about right for a lunch portion. I have a feeling a dinner at the sushi bar would've wowed me a bit more, but lunch was certainly decent. If I was still working across the street I'd probably head back for lunch again. However, for lunch I'd still prefer Chef Ko across the street for fresh and tasty food.

Took the family to this place on a strong suggestion. I was ready and willing to meet Haru, the owner and head Chef. When we arrived we waited for a few minutes then got seated only to find out that Haru was not at work for a few days. The service was marginal and the food was ok. I had high expectations of this place and I plus the family felt let down. Doesn't anyone work for TIPS anymore? I swear I am so tired of having to pay the price of food only to have marginal service. To be honest, the sushi boat is more service geared than this place. Maybe the mice played while the cat was away. I will give it a second chance at a later date. It was just ok..

I came here on the recommendation of a friend and wanted to right my own review. My friend and I arrived about 8pm on a recent Friday evening. The place was packed and could here diners from outside the restaurant with the front door open. The sushi bar was full with a lot of happy diners, which seemed promising. There was a slight wait so we put our names down and sat in the lobby. The gal that took our name said it would be a few minutes and went to cleared a table. Another couple walked in and were greeted by another gal and requested for "a table for two". The gal helping this couple looks over and gives them the table that was being cleared for my friend and I. Now, another gal asks if we have been helped. We stated that couple that just arrived was given our table. This gal didn't seem to care, but told us to wait a moment and then sat us in a different area. The restaurant definitely needs a better system to track patrons that are waiting. It was a busy night, but that is no excuse for a mistake like this. That pretty much set the tone for our evening there. I ordered a couple of orders of maguro, unagi, uni and some miso soup while my friend ordered a bento box with chicken teriyaki. The sushi was good with nice portions of fish, but not great. My friend's bento box looked good and she said it was average. I think if we didn't have the mishap in the beginning we would have enjoyed our meal more. I would like to come back another time to see if I have a different experience, and will update my review at that time.

THEY'RE NOT OPEN ON SUNDAYS!!! YARG!!!! *shakes fists!* Japanese restaurants are so unreliable x_x. But I guess they can afford to be fickle when their food is so good.
(3)Tim C.
This is by far the best Japanese restaurant around. Its small, family owned and really charming. The waitresses are extremely friendly and helpful too. I always order the Teppan-Yaki which is delicious. All the food is reasonably priced and the portions are decent. The green tea ice cream is also really good! Iabsolutely reccomend this place to anyone who wants some tasty Japanese food.

Sushi Zono is one of my favorite sushi places. I've been coming here for over 10 years and haven't ever regretted a visit. It's in a small strip mall, you could walk right by it and not even notice. The place is relatively small and the decor/ambience is not the greatest but the food quality is above average and their prices are very reasonable. One of our favorites is the Dinner for Two ($33) which includes miso soup, salad, gyoza, california roll, shrimp and vegetable tempura, beef and chicken teriyaki, rice and green tea ice cream for dessert. We're usually full by the time the teriyaki arrives. The service is very friendly but sometimes a little slow, especially when they get busy. I'll take this any day over Blowfish...at least I can hear myself think.
(4)Stephanie H.
Went here the other night based on such high Yelp reviews and was not let down!! Not only was the service pleasant but the sushi was awesome! It tasted great and didn't break the bank. It is always nice to find new places to eat... And this will definetely be a place I will come back to!!
(4)Mick B.
Very good sushi, good service and good prices. I liked that the ambiance and energy of the place was vibrant, but without being overwhelming or tacky. Next time I want to go out to sushi, this is where I'm going.
(4)Ton Y.
Went here for the first time last night - Friday at 7pm. The place was about half full so we were a little nervous. OK atmosphere - good for family, not to impress a date. Menu was pretty good as well as prices. As we were sitting, the place got busier. It took over 30 minutes to get our food - take off one star. When the food came it was good, not amazing. I would go back but earlier next time as they do not have enough sushi chefs for the restaurant.
(3)Jennifer C.
They have an amazing tuna sashimi dish called Carpaccio and should be tried by all customers at least once! It's so good. It's tuna sashimi covered with this amazing sauce. I know it sounds plain but it is really, really good. The appetziers are good here and the rolls are average. Try the appetizers, so good!
(5)K C.
Great place to have a nice dinner with family, friends, whoever! We go their often and the food is always fresh. A highly recommended place!
(5)Billy Q.
I'm not as crazy about it as other reviewers. Found it on Yelp. Like it, don't love it. Nothing special.
(3)M B.
Overall great sushi in the bay area. Definately need to get there when they open. The weekends you can expect to wait for a table if you arrive late, but definately worth the wait.
(4)Amanda B.
I have to say of all the sushi places I have been to, I know freshness when I taste it. The quality of the sushi melts in my mouth. The salmon sashimi is to die for along with all the raw fish they serve. This is a cute, friendly, and cozy place. The chef can whip up any specialty available. I had the lobster special which tasted superb! The raw oysters arr seasoned to perfection. My favorite is the grilled squid which is not on the menu. My favorite place!
(5)Louis R.
We have been eating at Sushi Zono for many, many years. We have never been disappointed yet. We love the the iki fry appetizer. Sushi is always fresh. Beef Udon is very good as well. Weekends may be a little busy, but worth the wait!
(5)Pamela S.
I've only been here once, and it wasn't bad. It is sad however when I ask for the Sriracha, they bring me a little condiment bowl with a squirt in it :(. That is only enough for half a bite of food for me. Poor me. I would've asked for more, but I felt like I would be bothering the server. I will just start bringing Sriracha when I go to Japanese restaurants, so I have enough.
(3)Kimico P.
I have been going there forever ! It has become the standard for sushi . Most of the time I find myself disappointed at other places. Try the 49er roll and the poki !
(5)Rob S.
I wasn't too impressed with this place. At first I thought the numerous Japanese customers augured well, but maybe they were all having sushi. We normally go for the bento, as we did this time, and the Dinner for Two seems like an incredible deal for $34. It was quite a bit of food, with standard miso soup, generic iceberg salad, two kinds of teriyakI, two kinds of tempura and rice. Most of this was adequate except for the tempura, the breading of which was saturated with oil and falling off the prawns and vegetables. Yuck-O. The hot saki also seemed substandard and gave me a headache, something saki never does. The service was O.K. until the end when she didn't clear our table that was covered with dirty plates when she brought our ice cream. Better sushi options abound, and not far away from this place. Will not repeat.
(2)Hiro I.
I went there for the first time on a Saturday night around 8pm. Although there were plenty of available tables, they sat me in the far back corner. The food was so, so but the service could have been much better. I only saw the server upon arriving, when she took my order and when she brought the food. No one appeared again to ask if I needed anything or to refill my tea. Other customers seem to be well taken care of since they may have been repeat customers. I had to go the counter to pay the bill since no one brought me the check. I felt neglected and unappreciated. I've had better and fresher food elsewhere and a better experience for the same price. I will not go back to Sushi Zono again.
(1)Erin S.
I liked this place. Went on Saturday evening and it was not packed (about 1/2 full), service was not amazing but was adequate. FYI - I am a vegetarian who will eat shrimp. I REALLY liked the edamame - and for me this is alot how I first judge a sushi joint. The ambiance is fine, it's in the corner of a strip shopping area, so it's unassuming - the inside is comfortable. We had the Double roll , veggie dynamite and tempura rolls, an avocado roll, ebi nigiri, one seaweed salad and a large Sapparo for $38 - not bad at all! Oh, and you get a complimentary miso soup and small lettuce salad. All the food was fresh and tasted great. It's not the most amazing sushi place I've ever been to but I will definitely go back! They have nice bathrooms too...which for me always helps improve the star rating factor.
(4)Joshua S.
I have to say that I've been to Sushi Zono 7 or 8 times in the past 6 months. Initially, I came for the sushi bar and had a great time. The sushi is very fresh and just excellent! A lot of fun at the sushi bar. Since then, I've come with my wife and we've sat at the tables and ordered from the menu - and here I have to say I've been really disappointed. The service is really excruciating... to the point now where I'm not really eager to go anymore. Just last night, my wife and I went on a Tuesday night around 6:30 pm. It was not overly crowded, and yet it took over an hour to get a simple order of 4 pieces of nigiri sushi along with some rolls. So there you go - I would go just for the sushi bar, but if you're looking for quick sit-down sushi, you're probably going to be a little exasperated. I was.
(2)Jay P.
My favorite sushi place for FRESH, GENUINE sushi :) All of their rolls are well done, and I've never had a better Dragon Roll than here! I especially enjoy the Zono roll, Art roll, & Vegas roll. They have a great appetizer selection (more varied than their rolls), and definitely recommend their fresh Poki, Ika fry, Tuna Carppacio (yumm, that sauce) among others. Their Udon also kicks ass - love that broth (I usually get chicken or pork). And, top your meal off with a Tempera Green Tea ice cream!! They use a more expensive kind of green tea ice cream (I believe it's from an ice cream place in Santa Cruz), and you can definitely taste the quality. Go here! They're great! Only thing is to watch out for those busy weekends. I usually aim for the weekdays and although it's quieter, the service is unbeatable.
(5)Anthony G.
This is the best sushi spot in the sj area, no bullshit! I have been coming here with my family for the past 15+ years, and know the staff very well. The man with the blade (haru) and his son are slicing, rolling, and turning out fresh sushi that still leaves me dumbfounded. Sit at the bar, grab a kirin or some sake, and enjoy a flurry of immaculate fish and great conversation. I promise, you won't be disappointed.
(5)Chris M.
Sushi Zono is really a can't-miss sushi restaurant. The fish is consistently fresh and of high quality and the service is always friendly. The restaurant is family owned and operated and one usually finds Haru, the owner behind the bar. If you ask him, he'll tell you "all my fish is good" but he'll also point you to the fish that is especially choice on any given day. Friday evenings are usually very crowded but week-day lunches (when I usually go) are not too bad. Tip: pick up a take-out menu on the way to your seat to find the long list of maki specialties available.
(5)Karin S.
YUM! Sushi Zono is the best sushi I've had in the south bay. I eat here regularly and the fish is always fresh and the service is great. Get the Wasabi Poke, it's AMAZING and so fresh.
(5)Thu H.
YES, YES, YES, YES, YES! Sushi Zono is DEEEE-LISH! Their seafood teppan is my favorite hot plate! It comes out sizzling hot and super tasty! My boyfriend and I always order the Hong Roll when we are in the mood for something spicy. They also have the best selection of appetizers I've ever tried, and I've tried everything. You should definitely try the albacore tataki and the Hawaiian poki if you are a tuna lover. If you are looking for fresh fish, Zono is your stop. They always have fresh fish delivered daily and they would never serve you anything that wasn't good. For the drinkers: they have a great selection of sake and Kirin on tap! It's true that it can get busy in there but what good restaurant is empty? I've always gotten great service there, the waitresses are super friendly. Trust me, try it out once and you will keep coming back!
(5)Ailin N.
This is one of my husband's favorite Japanese place. We come here so much I think the waitress recognized us. Get the "Hong Roll" its sooo good. We usually order Hong roll, hamachi cheeks, ika fry, and whatever else. Its a family owned restaurant and authentic tasting food if you ask me. Our other favorite is Gochi.
(4)Carmelo O.
Oaky, i've been here twice and both times, service at the booth was slow. It's almost like they sit us in a spot that nobody is sure who is serving it. The food tast good but the portions are small. The prices are a bit high and i'm used to a bigger selection of sushi. I like to try places at least twice and both times it was mediocre. Try it for yourself. Me personally, it's just okay.
(3)Vivian D.
I went to Sushi Zono on a Saturday night with a couple of friends. I thought it was okay. I had the Udon with Tempura. The noodles were good and chewy but I thought there would be more tempura variety like it mentioned. But I only had like one shrimp, brocolli, carrot and peas.... I also ordered their special grilled mushrooms. Even though I love their variety it's just a very small portion. I thought there would be more... I love mushrooms. The sushi took forever to come out. I finish my udon plus + 5ish minutes when the sushi finally came out. I only ordered one kind of sushi but it took pretty long for that. Maybe because my other friends ordered sushi, too and they like it when we all eat our sushi together, but it still took a wait. Service was okay. It took like 5 minutes until we had a seat even though there was plenty of seats for us. It would be nice if our server came to ask if we would like anything else or what not, but she only came to us to serve our food. She's nice though so that's fine with us. The sushi was alright but really spicy for me. I had that one orange spicy condiment with my sushi + wasabi and it made me teary. I would come here again but I would like to try other sushi restaurants in the area.
(3)Patrick W.
On the one hand, this place had great food, and good prices, and nice service. On the other, it took 55 minutes to get our food after we ordered. That is WWaayyy too long. I will give it another chance, but if it is similarly slow again, that will be it.
(3)Lloyd C.
This is my favorite sushi place in Campbell. The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful in deciding what to order. The food is great and the prices are decent. Highly recommended.
(5)soychick v.
Love this place. They have a veggie section. Not too big but they're looking out for us! :) Veggie sushi options, the avocado/cucumber rolls and pickle rolls are good. Natto is available too for those who like the stink ...(wink wink). Vegan options available, but you gotta ask, otherwise it could be vegetarian. Other than that...staff friendly, and they have somen. mmmmm.
(5)Tomomi S.
Hands down, Sushizono has been my favorite sushi-ya for me since I moved here in the Bay Area. Sushi is very fresh and they don't skimp on sushi- meaning that sashimi is bigger (and thicker) than the rice portion. If you go there, sit at the counter and enjoy the conversation with the chef. Once they get to know you they will make some special dish of the day. It is not a cheap sushi, but you will get what you paid for!

I am a big fan of sushi zono. We come here quite often for some good japanese food. We're not really here for the sushi rolls, but more for the appetizers. The prices are low and the quality of food is great. Our personal favorites are the 1) hong roll 2) the cod 3) tataki 4) ika fry 5) tuna carpaccio 6) hawaiian poki. Service is very friendly as well.

The sushi here is undeniably delicious. This is probably some of the best sushi i've ever had. The fish is fresh and the special rolls are well made and flavorful. I like the hong roll, hamachi delight, and the freedom roll, as well as the infamous (and delicious) Shengalang roll named after my friend Chef Sheng. This place would be getting 5 stars instead of 4 if the service was better. I don't really give a crap about ambiance if the food is good and doesn't take forever, however on my last visit our waitress (who im assuming was new) misplaced one of our rolls and never gave us plates or refills on water. I wish i could tip the sushi chefs directly because frankly she did a horrible job. However, if you like good sushi this place will not disappoint.

As a certified sushi nut, I can vouch that this is the best place for fresh fish in the South Bay. In addition, they have Japanese beer on tap, great teriyaki, wonderful tempura as well as a great selection of items. Have been going there for nearly 20 years now and have never been disappointed.

Sushi Zono has a great variety of fresh, delicious sushi and sashimi. They have a huge variety of choices in sushi rolls, some are quite experimental. I really like their rainbow roll. Be careful when you order, coz you get way more than you would expect from other Japanese restaurants - they don't skimp! The staff are super friendly.

this place is nice, clean, great service, great location with ample parking. The prices are decent but the selection is not too generous ration wise. Sushi is good and the service is what really makes this place shine. You better know your sushi when you here though. Not very many pictures and prices may make you regret bad choices.

i love this place for sentimental reasons alone. i've been eating here with my dad since i was a teen. i usually get a bunch of sushi rolls... nothing too fancy but they are quite tasty. the sukiyaki dinner is also alright. really i like this place so much b/c it is family owned and i love seeing the familiar faces.

Excellent. large thick portions of fish. clean. sit at the sushi bar and be prepared to receive special items from the chefs. once Haru even made spaghetti with marinara sauce.. it was amazing.

great sushi, not over priced. service is up and down, but generally good. for me a good sign of a good sushi place is if they serve fresh uni. this place has been 99% good. i usually ask if it's fresh first. a good sushi restaurant won't serve it if it's been sitting around. they also have great udon with delicious broth. i come here quite frequently and the food is very consistent. a big plus and a place i can rely on to bring my out of town friends to.

Sushi Zono is a great place for Japanese food and sushi. Although they are small, they're often very busy. If you plan on going, try to go early, otherwise you could end up waiting for a bit. The restaurant is located in a small shopping complex, tucked away in the very back, behind a Payless Shoes. The food at Sushi Zono is excellent, they have delicious udons, tasty teppans, and savory bentos. In fact, try their "Dinner for Two". It's a meal large enough for three to four and gives you a good sampling of Japanese restaurant staples (tempura, teriyaki, etc). And if you get lucky, you might even be able to get an order of their hamachi kama. They serve the tastiest hamachi kama I've ever had. Unfortunately, they only have a few orders per night, and the dish is popular. As for sushi, it's some of the best that Campbell has to offer. It always tastes fresh, and you can really taste the quality in the sushi and rolls. I'll give you fair warning, once you start eating at Sushi Zono, eating at a cheap sushi boat place will become gross and painful. The only negative thing about Sushi Zono is the service. You won't encounter rude or unfriendly staff. Rather, their staff has a tendency to be extremely slow, forgetful, and neglectful. The only reason I don't go more often is due to the astonishingly slow service. Overall, Sushi Zono has great food, but you might want to order it to go. 04/04/07 Update After having not been there in a looooong time, my father took me to Sushi Zono for dinner. The waitresses working that night were both new, or at least new since the last time I had been there. And the service? Excellent .... shocked the living hell out of me. Sushi Zono will be seeing much more of me if this keeps up. 04/30/07 Apparently the good service from the 4/3 trip was just a fluke. They're back to being slower than dinosaurs. Sushi dinner for two took over 45 minutes to get to us, after ordering. My fish was also served warm.

I'm not much of a sushi connoisseur (or a connoisseur of any kind of food, for that matter), so sometimes I tend to put more emphasis on things like service, ambience, and other non-taste related stuff. So, that said, I enjoy sushi, and I enjoy the sushi at Sushi Zono more than any sushi place I've been to thus far (I've eaten at maybe 4 sushi places in my life, so you see what I mean, it's not saying much.) I love the beer, the ambience, the staff, and the location, which is kind of cutely hidden behind a Payless Shoe Source off of Hamilton Ave in a crappy little strip mall. The last time I was there was with my boyfriend, who made the experience even more enjoyable by karate chopping the air with excitement between bites of some of the spicier rolls that he dipped generously in his potent soy/wasabe mix. He's just crazy like that. Overall, a great place for lunch or dinner.

So many items on the menu that I can't list them all. Our favorite place to go to when in San Jose. My favorite is the spicy ika. Fish is extremely fresh. Ragging tuna is awesome as well. Crowded for dinner so get there early.

Sushizono is a japanese family owned restaurant that's been around for awhile because of its loyal regulars and sushi lovers. The sushi is fresh and delicious. The seafood teppan is my favorite as well as some other unique dishes on the menu. The albacore tataki, hong roll and crunchy roll are a few other must trys. Service is friendly and food is yummy! Try it!

This place is what I call "down home" Japanese food. Sushi is always fresh and the "cooked food is great as well. Prices are great and there is always a lot of regulars. Service is up and down and the sushi bar is always full, but you will get great food, decent prices and a nice laid back atmosphere.

i used to come here all the time, but i went once and was totally turned off. i was a regular because their fish was excellent (very fresh) and their prices where not bad. i would give this place a better rating if it wasnt for the bad time that i went. that time, the fish was really poor quality. i guess i am just a sushi snob. give it a try i guess. it was good to me in the past.

I went here after seeing some other yelpers give it a good review. First off, there was a strange smell to the place. I'm not sure where it came from, it might not even be the fault of the restaurant (the parking lot smelled of it too) but it was not pleasant. The decor is a mixed bag. Traditional Japanese decorations was mixed with strange particle board seat backs. It was very odd. The food was pretty good however. We ordered a lunch bento box and sashimi appetizer. The sushi tasted fresh and the tempura was crisp and a good variety of vegetables. They seemed understaffed or something because other patrons were complaining about the service. But for us, we arrived at 1pm so the after the initial wait to be seated, service was prompt. The portions were small however, which may make the price a little excessive, mainly for the sashimi appetizer which was $13. Because of the decor/ smell and price, however, I don't think I'll be coming back.

A cozy, inviting and unpretentious place to grab some sushi. The wait staff is always very friendly. The sushi is always as expected and tasty. The prices are right. I would recommend to anyone looking for a low key sushi place. I think this place is just as good as some fancy expensive places I've been nearby in downtown Campbell. Give it a try!

We eat here all the time with our kids. It's one of their favorite restaurants. The staff is always friendly, and great with the kids. They have good vegetarian options, although their miso soup is not vegetarian. I wish they were open on Sunday's, but if that's their only flaw, I can deal.

Great sushi but the service here is always slow. I go here when I need a sushi fix by myself and just relax with my book. I running slow they usually give you edamame for free...sushi can be a little on the pricey side. They also have shiso leaf which is a huge plus for me as not all Japanese places have it.

I've been going to Zono for about four years and highly recommend to sit at the bar as the sushi chefs are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their craft (especially Eibo). My usual order here is the miso-glazed black cod, hamachi kama, ika fry, and whatever sashimi is freshest that day. I've had some of my favorite dishes here and give Sushi Zono my highest recommendation.

The salmon and scallop sashimi was the best I've had in a long time. Also the ahi poke salad was amazing, it's a small portion but with big flavor. Sushi rolls were relatively fair, but their sashimi is what hits the spot. Family owned, they're sweet, kind, and actually Japanese. The owner buys his fish fresh daily and prepares them as needed. A must try, and keep in mind if you're sitting at the sushi bar a deep pocket is much needed.

Even though we are veggie and had less options we enjoyed whatever we had. The avacado sushi was really good and the green tea ice cream too. Absolutely no problem with the service. It would be mostly crowded n hence hav to have some patience. Would recommend for sushi lovers. Not expensive too.

I've been coming to sushi zono since I was in grade school. It'd always been a staple Japanese spot for me and has yet to ever disappoint me. They food is consistent and the service is friendly. I can also appreciate that they have local sports teams on the tv 24/7. Tonight I went there with my fam and we ordered a bunch of food. Our chicken came out slightly raw so I asked them just to throw it in the microwave. Instead of that they actually threw it back on the grill which was nice. Then on top of that they brought out a complimentary scallop and crab roll with tobiko. It's not like we were even upset or complaining. The owner/manager decided on his own to go above and beyond to make a customer happy... I find this is very rare these days. Thanks for turning a potential hazardous meal into a wonderful dining experience.
