When I used to live in Mammoth, I'd always pick up a loaf of Great Basin Bakery's sourdough bread at the local health food store. Now that I only visit Mammoth occasionally, and am usually driving through Bishop late at night, I've missed grabbing their baked goods. On this trip, though, I was able to actually visit the Bishop location and order a sandwich in addition to my bread fix. And, it was the best sandwich I've had in a long time, possibly ever. The Italian Veggie had provolone, tomatoes, spinach, avocado, and their own dressing, served on either multigrain or sourdough (I went with multigrain since I'd just purchased a couple loaves of sourdough). The combination of flavors was ideal, and everything was just so fresh. I'm just going to have to make certain to get to Bishop during regular business hours in the future!

So frustrated! Driving through Bishop with my husband and was so excited to see that there were 2 huge, DELICIOUS bakeries and delis... Only to find that one of them (Schat's) didn't offer ANY gluten-free options, and the other (Great Basin) had 2 types of GF cookies to choose from. Come on, people! GF is a popular, progressive and healthy lifestyle... Oh, and it's 2015. Get with the program! By the way, I also Yelped these places before visiting and they had some GF recommendations. Don't let those fool you! While all of you enjoy your delicious, soft Soudough breads, I'll be chomping on my carrots and lettuce...

Food: Had an egg, bacon, ham, cheese croissant which was very tasty and unlike another very popular bakery in Bishop, it was made to order fresh. We also had a snicker doodle muffin which was moist and yummy. Coffee was good. Atmosphere: Smaller no frills bakery which is not a bad thing. They have a few tables for you to enjoy your morning coffee. The service is very good and they make u feel at home. Place gets pretty busy! Final thoughts: Tried this place while staying in Bishop for a few days on vacation. Breakfast croissant, coffee and muffin were yummy for my tummy. Will be going back for another breakfast croissant before we go back home. PS you can add anything to your croissant...avocado, tomatoes...yummy.

Tucked away, in a part of town that you most likely wouldn't come across unless you were a local, is this delightful bakery churning out moist cookies, fun filled croissants, bagels and scones that have created a bit of a cult following. Recently, my girlfriend wiped them out of their orange chocolate chip scones before 6:40am on a Monday morning. We were dying laughing because she purchased every single one. With all the times that I've been to Bishop, and my prolific use of yelp, I somehow missed this little gem. I guess Schat's overshadowed them, but I'd say Great Basin has it's own strengths, and definitely worth a visit if you are in town. I know that Schat's is going to take the back burner to Great Basin Bakery on my future Bishop visits.

I come to Bishop at least once a year to do photography and we always stop into the Great Basin Bakery. It's a must stop and we skip the other bakery in town. Met the owners on a hike once - super lovely people. The Sierra Mud Cookies are absolutely amazing (despite being Gluten free) and I always take a bag of cookies home. All the baked goods are delicious, as are the breads. On this trip I had the Mt. Tom Turkey sandwich, added bacon and on a croissant and it was AMAZING. Totally hit the spot. Definitely recommend a stop here!

Bagel sandwiches with bagels made that morning. Enough said.

What an amazing find! We found this bakery on our way to June Lake and needed bread for our fishing and hiking sandwiches. We walked in on a Sunday afternoon and saw so many things. Scones, cinnamon rolls, biscotti, cookies, brownies, and bread. We bought a loaf of Asiago cheese sourdough and a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was perfect! The next day we used the sourdough and wow, wow, wow! It was amazing. We could taste the Asiago cheese in every bite and it was not overwhelming at all. We used the whole loaf. Delicious... Am I getting it across to you this place is bombalicous?? We stopped again on our way back home and had their egg and bacon croissant sandwich. It was yummy. Even large! We bought a couple more loaves of bread too! They use local eggs, when available, and serve Black Sheep Coffee. Now this place is not huge and it can be busy. We overheard that the line in the morning goes out the door. I can certainly see why. Lots of nice employees too, so it's a great local business. We will always come back when in the area. Always!!

This is a great place to stop at if you're in Bishop. There happens to be more to Bishop than what's on Highway 395 and if you're willing to poke into one of the side streets, you'll find a place like Great Basin Bakery! It is just a lot more easy and convenient to get in and out of this bakery than the other bakeries in Bishop. The food is good and don't forget to grab a bag of cookies!

Excellent fresh baked goods with gluten free options for those with celiacs.

My favorite place for lunch! Been coming here since My family moved here 4 years ago. Awesome sandwiches, all-natural ingredients and gluten-free/ vegan options. (Hint: get the mud cookies)

Best mushroom Brie soup I've ever had. Best potato soup I've ever had. Great fresh French bread, batards, cookies, and quiche. They take orders for their products for pickup tomorrow (they frequently sell out). The sandwiches (Mount Tom Turkey) are very good. The coffee is good. The iced tea is okay. I think they have more artificial sweeteners than anyone else. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and fast. Raymond's Secret Sandwich Stud moved to Great Basin. He's still amazing, but his selections are significantly reduced. The prices are a little above national average, but very good for the area. The batards and French baguettes are sinful. The parking is a challenge (give up and go park in the city parking lot: Warren St between Line and Lagoon), but the baked goods are your reward.

I'm addicted to the Cowgirl Cookies. Best. Ever. Worth the 4-hour drive. ;-)

Honestly it is not the most amazing bakery, but it is my favorite in Bishop. Here you can avoid the craziness of Schat's, and they do make their goods fresh each morning. The breakfast bagel is really good, although the ordering menu is pretty confusing if you haven't have your morning coffee yet. The scones are the best here. Overall, a chill place that's getting increasing popular. So be patient with the growing wait.

Getting sexy for summer is proving to be harder and harder because my sweet tooth has been in overdrive lately. Having a wonderful wonderful other half who likes to feed my addiction is not helping either. Muffin top hates him. Over the weekend, bf brought me some Sierra Mud Cookies from Great Basin Bakery while he was traveling through the area. I'm a dark chocolate-aholic and a soft cookie monster, so these Sierra Mud Cookies could very well be my kryptonite. They are incredibly decadent and delicious and I just had to write a review on these alone! Shout out to the pastry chefs at GBB! First, the name explained....no, the cookies are not made of mud. The appearance of the cookies is reminiscent of the dry mud cracked ground in the deserts of Death Valley. The powdered sugar represents the snow in the Sierras. Pretty cleaver right? Second, it's all about the taste! Chocolate lovers, sweets lovers, cookie lovers, brownie lovers....you will be like me and eat the whole bag like there's no tomorrow. You've been warned. You're welcome. The cookies are soft but have the consistency of a brownie inside - moist, soft, melt in your mouth. All natural, simple ingredients - ground almonds, semi sweet chocolate, butter, eggs sugar. 'Nuff said.

This is hands down my favorite bakery in town, and is clearly the one preferred by locals too. It's an intimate little place right off the main drag. Lots of tasty options inside. Breads sell out by afternoon, but cookies were excellent and I was thrilled they had a gluten free chocolate chip on offer (which was very tasty). We'll certainly be back here again.

Really good bakery. Surprisingly good. I'm from the east coast, where we do bagels right. This place really could hold it's own with their bagels. My husband got the jalapeño bagel and we both found it to be really good. The bread was perfect and the jalapeño flavor wasn't too overpowering. I also got a chocolate croissant. I think it had an entire bar of chocolate in the middle. Very good and the croissant was flaky and buttery. Felt like I should workout after eating it though. The coffee was simple but really well done. This place is worth the stop if you are in the area.

Great all natural food. I am in love with the lemon butter cookies and their soup and sandwiches. I have honestly never had a bad thing there. One of my regular stops every week.

A little difficult to find as the front door doesn't face Main St. I'm so happy I found this bakery. When passing through Bishop on our way to Reno, we need lunch but we don't want to stop for a sit down meal so unfortunately, Taco Bell bean burritos have had to suffice. GBB has a delicious vegetarian sandwich with pesto, avocado, lots of spinach and cheese on homemade bread, all ready in their refrigerator case. I also tried a vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookie (excellent) and my boyfriend had a pizza bagel (excellent as well). They have basic coffee and tea plus other bottled drinks (kombucha). I thought the prices were very reasonable (sandwich, cookie, bagel and two drinks for $14). They take cards and the employees are friendly and helpful. There's indoor seating and a small little table and chairs outside. We'll be back again and again. Parking off of Main St. right near the entrance is easy.

I am a weekend morning regular and love this place. Low key vibe, local, very nice baked goods. The staff's music selections can be eclectic, so you never know what will be in the background. They also have a good sandwich selection at lunch time. Great place for a paper, coffee, and a scone (or bagel, or muffin, or cinnamon roll).

  • Mia D.

This is a small bakery a block off Main Street on Lagoon St. They offer a handful of hot drinks and a cooler full of cold options. We stopped in for a drink and ended up leaving with mini scones and a bag of chips. We tried the chocolate/orange, lemon, and cinnamon raisin scones. All were good and only 50 cents. The Chai Latte I ordered was from the carton, mixed with milk, and warmed. Not what I expecting but still good. The service was slow but worth the wait. The woman who helped us was super sweet and happy to help. Next time I am in town and in the mood for a scone I will stop here.

Great bread, great cookies, great everything! They sell sandwiches, brownies, cookies, breads, and scones. Everything you look for in a great bakery they have! They even process there own wheat!!!! And to top it off the people behind the counter and friendly and attentive to helping you find what you are looking for. The other place in town can't say that, not to mention Great Basin is not a tourist trap. If you are from out of town this place is a locals secret.

This bakery is truly as good as it gets! Every time I have the opportunity to head up 395 to Bishop the Great Basin Bakery is a must do. I like it even better as it is kinda obscure, off the main drag. Yesterday my husband and I stopped on our way home. Picked up a loaf of french bread and a special treat for me . . . . . a loaf of Pumpkin Walnut Bread. There were many other temptations I assure you. I wish it was located closer to where we live. I would be there every day. I wish them continuing success. They are a small, quality local business. ( I noticed that the ongoing "hard times" have taken their toll on Bishop retail since my last visit.)

  • Andrew G.

Breakfast was good the bagels were good the cookies were good the girls behind the counter were friendly and helpful. What more could you want from a bakery. I'll make it a habit to stop there whenever I'm up that way.

  • Amalia C.

Tried the veggie sandwich on Friday. It was good although they did not honor my request to hold the avocado (I loathe avocado) - I did see the order-taker write it down, so I suspect things were busy in the kitchen. Also got a couple of excellent cookies. Absolutely the high point in Bishop. I am still thinking about the spinach-feta croissant I ate last week. I also liked the local coffee; my family adored the muffins. The sliced French bread is like wonder bread but bettttter. Parking is surprisingly challenging due to the number of driveways on its little street. Friendly service.

NO BODY HAS ANYTHING on the Sierra Mud cookies! They are some of the BEST cookies I've ever had. The Cowgirl cookies are very good as well but the mud cookies will blow your mind. I love coming into town for this bakery & the antique place across the street!!!

  • Mel R.

This is one of my favorite places in town. Visiting my hometown means being able to stop at Great Basin and buy myself a pizza bagel. The pizza bagel is amazing along with the chocolate cookies and lemon scones. A more breakfast item would be the ham and cheese croissant, literally to die for although it makes a bit of a mess. This is a must stop! Tip: The best time to go is in the morning before ten.

A great small bakery. These folks are really on it. Good quality bread, pastries, cookies and breakfast/lunch items. Show up early as they sell out of many items most days. This is where the locals go. Well staffed. Tables to eat inside and outside. Parking is limited, try the side streets off this street. They are doing a great job. Support the little guys!

My first visit I had a cowgirl cookie (wonderful) & coffee.I took a loaf of asigo sourdough home (the best!) and I was back that afternoon at closing for 3 different kinds of cookies, all yummy. The next day I had a jalapeno bagel and right now that's at the top of my list BUT I haven't been in today yet! Super nice people in there. I know bread believe me and these folks are doing it right!

Do not waste your time at schats bakery! This is the best bakery in town!!! Delicious asiago cheese bagels, bread, croissants and pastries!! We stop here every time were in town visiting and gaily and take plenty home to go!!

  • Anthony G.

The cinnamon rolls and blueberry muffins were dry and overcooked. For $2.50/muffin, I'd expect/hope for something pretty delicious. The blueberries were dry, and the muffin itself was not moist at all. The cinnamon roll had to be cut with a (plastic) knife, and it required some effort. Additionally, the icing wasn't even melted over the cinnamon roll...it was in a big cold lump on top. Maybe throw it in the microwave for a few seconds? No wait, then it'd be a brick. I've had better cinnamon rolls from a can, and I bought better blueberry muffins at a grocery store down the street the next day. Based on what we had, it didn't seem like they take much pride in what they baked. If I eat at a place that specializes only in baked goods, I shouldn't be able to buy cheaper/tastier baked goods in a can or at a grocery store.

An excellent bakery, well worth a stop if you're in Bishop. Great sourdough breads with or without seeds, breakfast sandwiches and plenty of fresh, home baked sweet goodies. Super service; a real find!

Fantastic muffins, AMAZING sourdough bread! Friendly service, great soups and really good grab-and-go sandwiches and salads. This place is always a good option for breakfast or lunch or anytime you want good coffee and a cookie.

The best bakery in Bishop. Seriously. Breakfast bagel sandwiches, cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting, scones, cookies, etc. Everything here is so good, you can't go wrong. Two bummers: The seating is limited and they don't have espresso.

  • Tony L.

Great atmosphere. Made from local products. Highly recommend the everything bagel with egg and cheese!

This is an awesome bakery! I've loved everything I've gotten here. They have great bread, tasty cookies and scones, and good sandwiches too. They also have other pastries and desserts, and miscellaneous things like gourmet jams for the bread. It's definitely the best bakery in town, and better than Schat's, in my opinion. They have great and friendly service too.

  • Alexandra W.

The cinnamon rolls are amazing, and this is a great alternative to the standard fast-food-road-trip-to-mammoth options. Breakfast looked like good but we stopped for lunch... Great assortment of grab n go sandwiches that are made daily. Salads too. Everything here is good!!

    (5)
  • Pat K.

Great coffees! Awesome breakfast sandwiches ! Perfect bakery (scones, cookies, croissants, bagels and pies) ! A must go to place for the best - even off the beaten path (difficult to find), parking is awful, and lines are long. Try their scones, croissants, apple pies, and cookies - there are sure to delight. You just have to deal with the long line of people in the morning and a lot of items running out early in the day. Yes, even a place that is so difficult to get to is worth it - no wonder the locals have made it a routine at this great establishment.! Must return here each time traveling to/from Mammoth.!

    (5)
  • Kristen H.

I love coming here for breakfast and lunch. They have delicious bagels! Seriously, best bagels I've ever eaten. Their cookies and other sweets are also yummy too! The staff is so friendly and the owner is awesome! They allow customers to make orders for future days and during the holidays. It's so convenient! Come here for all of your baked good needs, you won't be disappointed.

  • Curtis A.

I know so many people I know love this place, but personally I don't think it's that great. It has good cookies, bagels and everything but it's nothing to shout about. What I really don't get is its location. It's situated right next to a ghetto junk yard and I'd rather not eat my bagel outside while hearing loud machines and smelling motor oil. All and all it's nothing out of this world.

An outstanding bakery, highly underrated, one of the best spots in the Eastern Sierra. Worth the visit.

GLUTEN FREE !!!! The Sierra Mud Cookies are incredible AND Gluten Free! You don't have to need GF to love these cookies! Liv A's review says it all. FYI the bakery ENTRANCE IS ON LAGOON STREET !! not on Main.

In town for Mule Days and have eaten here 3 times already. Used to go to Shatz. Mushroom Brie soup.....oh baby. Everything bagel, apricot scone, spinach artichoke feta croissant all to come back for. Simple local atmosphere, right across street from antique store.

I'm French and picky about my croissants, but I loved theirs; very buttery, much tastier than Schat's. Nice strong coffee. Great breakfast place and friendly atmosphere.

WOW - Unbelievably good...went for the pies (I know they don't really do pies except the occasional apple etc around Thanksgiving so not sure where I read that) but each time we went there we were so distracted with all the delectable goodies and their phenomenal sandwiches, we forgot all about the nonexistent pies! ;) The Sandwiches were simply delightful - ate 'em at Mono Lake followed by a couple mini GBB cookies (they come with to my joy and surprise). Pretty much a perfect afternoon. :) So tasty a second sandwich stop was mentally added to our travels... The Bread -- ahhmayzing! Cowgirl Cookies - know they're a fan favorite (for good reason) and I definitely enjoyed 'em along with the Choc Chip (a classic!) and the Molasses (mmmm) but then there's those DELECTABLY SAVORY Rosemary Shortbread Cookies and those DIVINE Lemon Cookies - OMG!!! Croissants - lest not forget the croissants - Parisien in texture and freshness (no small feat) - by the time we arrived, they were out of the other varieties, but chocolate croissant was choco-heaven while the veggie croissant was so good, I took one for the road! Coffee - the best we had in the Eastern Sierras...caffeinated perfection! On my second - or was it third time back into the shop, I nearly cut in front of 3 people...seeing all those cookies and treats, I nearly lost my mind. But social decorum finely took hold of me - I properly apologized and let the fine folk ahead order first and all was right with the world. Embarrassing but not an isolated event I'm told. Happens all the time the local customers said with a smile. :) So yes, we're a fan - and next time we're in this neck of the woods, we'll definitely be back...in fact on this short 4 day trip from Death Valley to Twin Lakes, Convict Lake and back home to LA, we made a point of stopping in Bishop (specifically 169 Lagoon Street) TWICE..three times if you count my second visit on the same day. That's how good this place is! :)

This is a top flight bakery. Some excellent skills are at work here. By far, the best bakery in town. A great baker is measured by its croissant-perfectly executed. I also tried their pastry crust in the form on a mini-blueberry pie-the crust and filling were perfect, again. Long live bakeries operated with such passion and technical excellence!

I have been coming to Bishop for years and everyone knows about the famous bakery in town. So some local climbers told us we were missing out on Great Basin. They apparently use better ingredients and their rosemary shortbread and oatmeal cookies were awesome! If you are looking for the real local deal, then make sure to stop by.

  • Erich W.

I've been buying whole wheat bread and bagels here for over a year now..just wanted to add my 5 stars, because this bakery deserves it! Did I mention the chocolate biscotti? Dip them in a glass of cold milk when you get home.

If it's good enough for Huell Howser, it's good enough for me. We stopped here for an egg and cheese bagel on our way back to la la land. The lemon scone and choco chip cookie rocked!

I love good baked goods and coffee, this place does both. Schats is like Sara Lee compared to great basin. Their coffee is good too. It is a regular stop for us when ever in Bishop.

  • Maggie R.

When we take our out of town guests here, they want to move to Bishop. This is the tiny locals' bakery in town, vs. Schat's, which is where all the tourists go. I like Schat's bread, and sandwiches, but I come here for scones, croissants, and cookies! Their cookies are MOST amazing - I sometimes can't decide my favorites - probably the Cowgirl Cookies, that have dried apricots in them, and are very hearty, but the molasses cookies are amazing, and I really love the Rosemary Shortbread cookies... in small doses - they are kind of odd - they are a savory cookie, and incredibly rich shortbread, but the flavor fascinates me. I usually can only eat 1/2 of one, just because of the richness, but sometimes I can't stop at 1/2! They are not for everyone - I would guess you'd either love or hate them. I love them. But everyone loves the Cowgirls! :) Their sandwiches are very tasty, too - I like the turkey sandwich with the special red pepper mayo - yummy! Their breads are also very good - they have a different bread every day and some good day-old deals. I love the whole wheat bagels - especially for breakfast with lox and cream cheese - yum! But the main reasons to come here are the cookies and scones. Oh, and the artichoke-parmesan croissants! They also serve good locally roasted coffee. If you want to go to a bakery that is not swarming with tourists, and you like a slightly "crunchy" atmosphere, this is the place. Seating inside and a couple tables in front. On a quieter side street in Bishop. Locals, climbers, and backpackers like it best :)

Great find, just came in for a visit and I'm glad I found this place on yelp! I recommend the raspberry scone, lemon scone and enjoy some packaged cowgirl cookies. The scones are moist (not the kind of scones that suck up all the moisture in your mouth making it hard to eat) and they are not overly sweet either. Have to come back to try other delectable goodies!

  • Kar H.

I love this bakery! I try to go here often for their super tasty baguettes, sourdough bread, cookies (Cowgirl and Sierra Mud are my favs), bagels, soup, salads, and sandwiches (esp.the Mt. Tom turkey).

I saw the great Yelp reviews and decided to check this place out. I usually head to Schat's when I'm in town, but I'm always looking for places that the locals go. Based on the reviews, I picked up a chocolate chip scone, a bag of cowgirl cookies ($4.99), and a rosemary shortbread cookie. Sadly, I was not wowed by the scone or the cookie. Though tasy and interesting (the cookie), I did not find these items to be spectacular or mind-blowing. What I did like about the scone was that it was more cookie like, not that crumbly, and certainly not dry like some other scones (texture was kind of similar to the rosemary shortbread cookie). I did end up liking the cowgirl cookies very much though. They are chock full of apricots and walnuts and delicious. I will return next time just to buy these cookies.

5 stars! This quaint bakery has the best moist yet crispy on the outside scones. If you are up early in the morning you can see everyone working at 5am to prepare the morsels of amazingness. The earlier you get here the better so that you can have the best selection. Don't forget to grab some cookies. The molases and the cowgirl will raise your cookie standards and girl scout cookies will never be the same again. I always get the garlic bagel-yum!

So I've been meaning to write a review since my last visit. ( Labor Day Weekend) So I was referred to this bakey from TB's sister. She actually yelped Schatz and stumbled upon GBB. So as you pull up to the bakery, its definitely a hole in the wall shop. Its not on the main street driving through Bishop so its definitely easy to miss. When you first walk it, you immediately notice the yummy baked breads to the right. I don't even think I made it to the bakery case before I picked up the fresh baked sourdough. They carry different flavors of sourdough loafs including Asiago and Roasted Garlic. I haven't tried the Asiago but the Roasted Garlic is to die for. We've also tried the freshly made sandwiches. Nothing to extraodinary except they use their fresh baked breads. Cookies...you definitely gotta try. We bought the variety pack which incudes chocolate chip, lemon, cowgirl, etc. I've heard the coffee is good but haven't tried it out yet. Service has always been decent when we come in. I've noticed they are open during the holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, etc) so that is definitely a plus since we only come during the holidays. Now I'm craving the Garlic Sourdough...maybe I can call them and they can ship me some :)

As a road tripper, this was our enduring culinary memory from 10 days in the eastern sierras. Do not miss this amazing oasis in the vastness of that region. From the pastries to bagels, you won't go wrong. Favorite of ours were the cowgirl cookies! Omg - I would trade my firstborn for this recipe. Better yet, I'd trade for a house in bishop so I could live there and visit this bastion of baked bonbons every morning and gladly gain 100 lbs so I could enter the biggest loser and become famous! I wish they would take orders and ship, because I would sign up for a frequent flier program and cancel my Harry and David monthly fruit box... For the dried apricot oatmeal wonders. Love chewy cookies!!! Thank you Gbb, for rescuing us during 3 days stuck in bishop.

nice bakery in the little town of Bishop - the Bagel with Cream Cheese and Avocado ist probably on of the best in California and you can have a free coffee-refill when you stay at the bakery.

  • Jennifer M.

This place had good pastries but it does not deserve to be rated 5 stars on yelp. I was driving south from Mammoth last weekend and wanted to stop at a nice coffee shop on the way home. I searched on yelp and found this place had 5 stars, so we went there. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. The bakery needs to upgrade their ambiance and seating area in order to get 5 stars in my book - the baked goods were tasty, but it wasn't very comfortable for sitting and enjoying your meal.

This was the best surprise of our motel location. Loved the scone, bagel, croissants we had at breakfast. Great pre made sandwiches and Cowgirl cookies enjoyed on our way home. And so reasonable!

Great artisan bread. Lemon cookie and their rosemary shortbread cookie are worth the stop, even if you did fill out with goodies at the "other" bakery (tourist trap) in town

Always great food. Staff is always really friendly. Lots of vegan options. Great coffee. Very well priced and great day old selection worth checking every time you're there.

Some of the best baked goods I've had, and I just moved from Portland! The service is usually good, but not always. I don't think most of the food looks as good as it tastes, but I promise it is all very good. I suggest the Molasses cookies, the coffee cake and the cinnamon rolls. This is probably the best 'restaraunt' in Bishop so don't miss it.

If more people knew about this place, Schat's would have to close.

If you're a fan of fresh baked goods or bagels then this is your place. I can never remember which bagel cooking method I prefer but I know the results are what Great Basin puts out. Schat's is overrated, crowed, expensive and overall just not that good (IMO), I can go YEARS without stepping foot in that place where on the contrary I love to go to GBB. I love the eastside for so many reasons and GBB is just one of the many. Get ready for carb overload and try some today! Note: If you miss them during business hours, check out Manor Market for a GBB display of top sellers.

Good in it's own right even without the other-bakery-in-town tension. Not cheap, but probably the only place to find a vegan baked good in Bizhop and good goods to boot. Together with Black Sheep, Great Basin presents an exceptional alternative to Starbucks/Shatz. My light at the end of any long Sierra descent when carbohydrates are excusable. Two perhaps deliberate shortcomings come to mind: lack of electrical outlets and inconspicuous signage. Obviously the independent bakery can't have a billboard on Main St., but it's easy to miss if you're not looking hard. A local turned me on to it, I would have started going much sooner had I noticed it earlier. But again, maybe that's the point. Rosemary cookies are superb.

So glad a friend introduced me to this local's spot. The turkey sandwiches - classic and the Mountain (something) were outstanding. Roasted turkey on great french bread. The mountain version included a spicy mayo (excellent!), avocado and sundried tomatoes. I finished with the thumbprint cookies - raspberry or apricot filled. The best thumbprint cookies I've ever had. I'll be writing to Bon Apetit to see if they can get the recipe. I preferred the smaller thumbprint cookies over the large ones - yes, I tried both! Oops, the large one....actually scones. I was told to go to Schat's - I did but I favor Great Basin. Will be stopping here again (and again!) on future trips to Bridgeport!

If you want the tourist bakery, head up 395 to the one with the cheesy Dutch theme and all the RVs in the parking lot. For the low key locals' hangout, stop by Great Basin. Best bets: muffins, cookies, baguettes

WHERE THE LOCALS GO!!! GBB is my favorite place for breakfast and sweets. I love their roasted garlic cream cheese; it's full of garlic cloves for all of you garlic-oholics like me. I like to go in for a bagel for breakfast and pick up a few cookies for the afternoon. Regular chocolate chip and vegan chocolate chip cookies are my faves. Pick up a basin bar! Full of oats and seeds and other goodies. Now they serve sandwiches! You will notice several ribbons they've won for their goodies from our tri-county fair. Another plus for me is I get a discount for being a student at the local college. Go enjoy a treat today! :D

Excellent bakery with a fine selection. I had the apple crumb cake and a cinnamon roll sans icing. Both were fantastic. The only bummer is the parking situation however; not that big of a deal. Will definitely return to try more yummy things.

I've eaten here many times, and everything from the chocolate orange scones to the ham and cheese croissants are great. The folks behind the counter are always friendly and the coffee's fine. I don't go anywhere else in town for breakfast (except Hing's when I need a doughnut...).

This is possibly the BEST bakery on the whole eastern side of the Sierras! Forget about the "world famous" Schats up the street... they don't even come close to the quality of baked goods as Great Basin produces! The ambiance is slightly 'industrial', but if that's what matters to you, then you should go to Schats with all the other clueless tourists. Be sure to get there early, for they pretty much sell out of their pastries by the afternoon.

A hidden gem. Stumbled onto the Great Basin in Bishop, CA, and now trying to figure a way to justify the drive from L.A. just to get another loaf of their whole wheat bread -- best I've ever had in my life. Forget the other places -- Great Basin is number one!

Was in Bishop for vacation. Ended up running into to friends of the owner of this bakery (and eventually the owner herself). Decided to pick up some cookies on the way out of town. They are delicious. Can't recommend the Rosemary Shortbread cookie enough.

I love this place! Good bagels, good bread, delicious cookies. Get some coffee and a bagel with cream cheese and just relax or get it to go. I especially recommend the cowgirl cookies. The pre-made sandwiches are great too. Yum. Getting hungry just writing about it.

Definitely 5 stars. EVERYTHING here is terrific. I always phone ahead and order a sandwich to go and pick it up when I'm passing through Bishop. They make the best snickerdoodles. Good place to stop on your way to the Buttermilks.

Move over Noah's, Great Basin's bagels are DEEElicious! Also love their other baked goods like large cinnamon rolls with or w/o sugar glaze. They have to-go sandwiches and I got the veggie with hummus/olives/tomatoes/lettuce - yummmmie! Don't get sucked into the touristy Shaats - eat a tastier, healthier version of baked goods at Great Basin!

Off the beaten path and small but, filled with outstanding baked goods. We always hit this place on the way back from Mammoth. The vegan oatmeal cookies, baguettes, and muffins are all good and they serve local Black Sheep coffee. Local, laid back, yoga vibe.

The one thing you have to love about this place (though there are many more reasons to love it) is that it uses all natural ingredients in everything they make. My oldest daughter worked here for a summer before going to culinary school in Denver. We love the people who work there and the baked goods are fantastic. The only complaint I have is that there Sourdough isnt sour enough for me. But other than that try their chocolate orange scones and a mug of tea. Or anything else in the place for that matter its all good!!!
