I LOVE YOU. I WANT TO LIVE INSIDE OF THE FOOD YOU CHURN OUT OF THAT QUAINT LITTLE KITCHEN EVERY DAY. Gregoire is absolutely phenomenal. The potato puffs are to die for- salty, warm, soft, and fried! Their menu changes every month, and every month it's always fantastic. Everything is fresh and so obviously prepared and cooked with the utmost love. I can't just name ONE thing I've had here that blows me out of the water, because everything I have ever had does. The staff is extremely friendly and will totally answer any questions you have about ingredients/something you don't really know how to pronounce. The food comes in a cute octagonal cardboard box with checkered black and white paper lining the box. Your food will be neatly compiled inside with some sort of little side. Always delicious, always fresh. I wish I could eat here every day!

Love it! From their to go box to their food, it was prepared with care. I used to live in France and this place reminds me of eating in France.

Cal undergrad graduation weekend meant a huuuuuuuge line at my first choice for lunch, The Cheese Board Pizza. I've always wanted to try the crispy potato puffs at Gregoire and it's right around the corner! Gregoire is a TINY bistro serving delicious French food at low-brow prices. Lunch is the best deal with sandwiches priced under $10. According to their website, "everything on the menu is meticulously prepared from scratch and cooked to order using the best natural, organic and imported ingredients from around the world". Compared to sandwiches I've had lately, sandwiches at Gregoire costs slightly more than Boudin Bakery and Le Boulanger but cheaper than Ike's and The Sandwich Spot. The food comes in these cute octagonal cardboard containers. We saved all four of ours for repurposing. (We're in the Bay Area, after all!) Crispy potato puffs ($5.25) - overhyped fried potato-based balls. Based on their name, I hoped they would be similar to Jamber's Mashed Potater Tots, which are deep-fried heavenly balls of herbed fluffy mashed potatoes. I was hungry, the potato puffs were fresh, but the result was a disappointing let-down, far from spectacular. It might be worth ordering just once to experience what some others are so excited about, but I'm doubtful I'll ever order them again. If you are on a budget, fiscally or nutritionally, don't bother wasting your cash or calories on these fried potato puffs. We split one order amongst three people, and barely finished them because none of us were fans. The lunchtime sandwich menu was fantastic. We ordered the deep fried clam patty sandwich, smoked shrimp ceviche sandwich and the fried buttermilk chicken filet sandwich. Deep fried clam patty with marinated tomato, roasted garlic and mixed baby greens on locally and artisan-baked Semifreddi's pantofolina roll ($8.85). So.Good. With a name like "clam patty", I wasn't sure what to expect, especially since most reviewers mention the crispy potato puffs and fried chicken sandwich. The clam patty sandwich was totes amaze. Flavorful marinated tomato and roasted garlic makes this sandwich a standout. It was my first time eating pantofolina, and the classic round sweet sandwich roll was pretty awesome. Smoked shrimp ceviche with avocado & jicama on pantofolina ($8.85). The smoke flavor was not noticeable, which is better than too noticeable. The shrimp was fresh and succulent. The diced crunchy jicama was coated in a lovely bright green avocado sauce. Very refreshing and yummy! Fried buttermilk chicken filet with spicy coleslaw on a French roll ($8.85). This was the sandwich I originally planned on ordering for myself, but didn't so that we could sample three different sandwiches. I'm so glad because the fried buttermilk chicken sandwich was the least of my favorites. The coating was not very crunchy nor flavorful. The chicken was not juicy nor tender. The coleslaw was super creamy, but they forgot to add a kick of spiciness. An acidic splash of vinegar or lemon (or Sriracha) would have given it a nice kick. Overall, a boring sandwich. If you want a killer fried buttermilk chicken sandwich, check out South Bay gourmet food truck Eat on Monday's version - the Ultimate Fried Chicken sandwich which includes thick-sliced maple bacon on a locally baked Acme roll for $9.00 out of pocket.

My husband and I shared the Tri-tip sandwich and an order of potato puffs. Both were amazing and very yummy! Will definitely be going back during our stay in Berkley.

Unlike many of my fellow yelpers, I've been consistently unimpressed by Gregoire. The quality of the food doesn't warrant the long trip and the high prices for me. At first I though I was just unlucky, but I've been here so many times that I'm convinced it's the food itself. A Gregoire Yelp review would be incomplete without talking about the potato puffs. As a brief scan of the reviews will show, people are willing to come far and wide for these little things. That is why I was so surprised by how bland they are. Without the sauce they are little more than hush puppies, which you can get at any number of seafood restaurants (and for cheaper). However, the sauce is tasty, and if I happen to be in the area I don't mind picking some puffs up for my friends. The rest of the food, that I've tried is pretty good. The flat iron steak was satisfying, and more recently, the fried chicken sandwich was downright tasty. However, for the price tag that they carry, the portion and the quality doesn't live up. Now I'm no stranger to European fare, I've travelled across Europe a number of times with my family and grew up in Spain. That being said, I don't believe that the food at Gregoire lives up to its French bistro promises. The final nail in the Gregoire coffin is that there is virtually no seating, save for two picnic tables outside. So if it's raining or cold outside you're out of luck. I may be alone in this, but I find Gregoire to be an overhyped and overpriced eatery that is still resting on the laurels of its proposed "authentic" French dishes. While it is certainly not bad, it is also certainly not the best. While I'll never be one to deny a potato puff (I have to admit they make an amazing snack) I'll also never be one to go far out my way to buy them. If you're hungry for some French eats, make the trip into SF, you won't be sorry! Til next time, keep eating keep learning (the student foodie)

Fantastic. Eating on a wood bench on the side of the place was perfect. Amazing food, all in the same boxes, eat there or take with you. Fig pastry finished things off perfectly.

We like Gregoire for lunch (ooh la la those sandwiches!) and the occasional dinner (good "fancy takeout" when friends are in town), but today was the first time we tried their breakfast/brunch menu. And, just, yum... Sig other got the breakfast burrito--it was rich, but nicely balanced with the pico de gallo. I requested the puff pastry without the carmelized onions (which I love but have a sensitivity to). Sadly, the onions are inextricable from what they already have ready to go, BUT this is where the excellent service kicked in: -lovely guy called me as soon as my online order went in to explain about the onions and suggest other options. He suggested the scrambled egg and portobello sandwich on pantofolina. I added avocado. This was SO GOOD. Big shout-out to Javi, the chef. The pantofolina was fresh, soft, and lightly toasted, and the egg, mushroom, and chedder filling was divinely rich without being overwhelming. I was glad I added the avocado, but bacon or sausage would be too much. (Half is probably plenty if you're a small or moderate eater. This was a true brunch that eliminated the need for lunch.) We also split a chocolate croissant, which was also very good: light pasty, good quality and warm chocolate filling, and importantly, not too big. More like you would see in Europe. Kudos!

I'm very fortunate (or, perhaps, unfortunate) to work near Gregoire. Everything I've had from them has been excellent, and everyone there has been lovely as well. The only downside is that wait times and grabbing a seat can sometimes be difficult. Pro tip: order online for pickup. :) My favorites at the moment are the quiche (for breakfast) and, of course, the fried chicken sandwich. Also, the potato puffs are to die for. Whenever I don't order online, it's definitely worth the couple of extra bucks for a "Puff-grade" on your sandwich to swap a your side salad for a couple of these delicious heavenly potato balls.

I went to Gregoire and I did not try the potato puffs. BUT WAIT, before you scoff at my novice mistake, allow me to explain myself. There is almost ALWAYS a line out the door and down the block from Gregoire. I do not like lines. But also... I heard 'bout dem puffs and I knew I had to have one. At a seemingly clever attempt to avoid the line, I arrived at Gregoire 10 minutes after they opened on a Sunday morning and to my great pleasure, there were only 2 people in line and they were ordering together so it was essentially ONE person in line ahead of me. Perfect! Unbeknownst to me, however, is that Gregoire does not start serving Potato Puffs until 11:00 am, which is when they start serving their lunch foods. I almost cried when the cashier told me the news. That brings me to my first tip of this review: if you want the potato puffs, you gotta be committed enough to wait in line after 11:00 am. My second tip is to Look Past the Puff. All of the reviews rave about the potato puffs and I'm sure for good reason. But in the tragic scenario that led up to my ordering of something other than the potato puffs, I was able to appreciate the other amazing dishes on the Gregoire menu. Specifically, the Smoked Salmon with chive cream cheese on a baguette. It was fantastic. We also ordered the banana and chocolate bread pudding French Toast, which was melt-in-your-mouth good. We sat at the counter and watched the chef prepare our food right in front of us, practically drooling onto the stove top (don't worry, we didn't). Gregoire's biggest downside is its size. It is very, very small. When no one is there, this can feel cozy and almost home-y. However, Gregoire is typically packed and it gets to be chaotic and stressful when people are trying to pack into the small space to place their order, then crowding around the entrance while they wait for their food. It is not always clear who has ordered and who hasn't or where the line starts or begins. There are only a few seats and people have been seriously injured fighting over those spots (kidding... but I wouldn't be surprised). All of this madness is what deterred me from trying Gregoire sooner (and at an appropriate hour for the potato puffs). But, judging by the deliciousness of their less sought-after menu items, I will definitely be returning to tough out the ridiculous line in order to get my hands on the famous puff of potato goodness very soon. I'm sure it will be worth it :)

I hate to admit it, but the potato balls did not come anywhere close to my expectations. After reading rave reviews about the potato balls, I knew I had to try them. However, they were a bit dry and bland, even with the sauce. I was only able to eat two before feeling bored. The sandwiches however, were quite tasty. They have a wide selection to choose from and the ingredients were freshly put together.

Great quick lunch informal take-out location, bike friendly walk friendly. Just a block from Philz, a 5 minute walk from downtown Berkeley BART. Saw the tri tip coming out of the oven, wow! The fried potato puffs (9 per order) are a fun share. The puff pastry with smoke salmon was just so-so, bland. It needed a touch more of courage, wasabi, or something with kick/spice. The puff pastry texture was too soft (not crisp) and was soiled by the toppings. It needs more of a toasted bread like a rustic sour thickness or body. I admire the 3 separated waste bins for landfill, compost and recycle. I want to try the Oakland Piedmont location next.

The menu changes monthly so I'm not going to comment too much on the sandwiches--just that they're usually tasty with interesting ingredients. Something always on the menu, though, are the potato puffs! It's basically like the best, creamiest mashed potatoes scooped into a ball and deep fried. There's limited seating but it's really easy to just take it to go and find a sunny spot on Memorial Glade or any other grassy area at the nearby Berkeley campus. Sandwiches are only served during lunch time. P.s. you can't beat plastic silverware that actually looks like silverware.

Don't be fooled by the size of this little shop! My sister suggested we try this place for brunch one morning and the second we arrived to the restaurant, my dad was already hesitant about sitting on picnic benches outside eating lunch boxed brunch. She assured us that the food here is definitely worth it. We had a party of 5 so it was a little difficult fitting in the picnic benches directly outside the restaurant because the seating is L shaped. However, there are additional picnic benches to the right of the restaurant that are theirs as well. Apparently their lunch items are amazing as well but this review is purely on their brunch menu. Baked Puff Pastry with Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Caramelized Onions & Jack Cheese: This was one a dish the staff recommended and the puff pastry was absolutely amazing! It was packed with so much flavor. My dad loved it so much he scarfed it all down! Breakfast burrito with fried eggs, pico de gallo, cheddar & avocado: My boyfriend tried this dish and was surprised that this breakfast burrito did not come with your typical protein(s) such as ham, bacon, sausage, etc. The flavors of all the ingredients in the breakfast burrito definitely made up for his missing extra protein though. He enjoyed every bite of his burrito! Shirred Eggs with Parmesan, white truffle essence & sautéed mushrooms on pantofolina: This dish is my sister's favorite and she orders it every time. How can you go wrong with truffle essence and sautéed mushrooms in a sandwich? You can't! It was delicious. Yum yum yum! Duck confit & potato hash with poached eggs, grilled baguette: I was glad their poached eggs were not too runny because it worked well when I topped it on top of the grilled baguette. The duck confit and potato hash was perfectly seasoned. It was great! Overall, four dishes was just the right amount for 5 people because portions are pretty generous. We all enjoyed every single one of the dishes we tried. I had hoped to try their potato puffs but they're not served until lunch (darn!). I'll definitely want to come back to try their other dishes along with their potato puffs!

Found this place on yelp while I was visiting the area and so happy my boyfriend and i decided to try it out! They had so many great sandwich options, but we decided to share the croque madame and it did not disappoint! We also couldn't decide on a potato side so we ordered three... potato puffs, poutine and jalapeño potatoes au gratin. All of which were absolutely delicious! I enjoyed the potato puffs the most and the poutine came in a very close second! I could do without the au gratin but I know my bf loved them! If I'm ever back in Berkeley I want to try all their other sandwiches. With a side of potato puffs of course!

You know. The more I think about it, the more the concept of deep fried mashed potatoes should totally scare me away. But they don't. Because they're amazing. And delicious. And I wish that more than 10 came in a box, but I know I shouldn't probably ever eat more than that in one sitting. But they're so flavorful (I think they put crack in the breaded batter). And bite-sized. And the dipping sauce is amazing (unless you're not a huge fan of vinegar -- at which point, I'm sorry, but this sauce isn't for you). The other food that Grégoire serves is also pretty damn amazing, but I come here for one thing and one thing only. And that's deep fried potato balls.

Been back a few times now and have had much better experiences. The potato puffs are undoubtedly awesome. The dinner menu is a little expensive for what it is but for lunch it's a great option.

Probably my favorite restaurant in Berkeley. I go here about once a week for a sandwich, and I love that I can get something different every time and it's always good. I wouldn't recommend it for anything but lunch.
(5)Jeff Y.
Definitely one of my favorite restaurants back when I was a student at Berkeley! I usually just came for their lunch sandwiches. I had the dinner entrees once or twice, which were amazing too, but expensive. The lunch sandwiches never disappoint, and the menu changes every month. Don't underestimate the sandwiches! They are very filling despite their appearance (probably due to the fat content), and they always come with a side. I can't resist ordering some potato puffs whenever I come either. Desserts are great too! There is very minimal seating outside this tiny little booth of a place, so best to plan on take-out. Also, the wait can be a while if they are busy, so you can also phone or fax in your order.

I have only had their potato puffs, and if the rest of their food is as great .. I cannot wait to come back. But then again, mashed potatoes are my favorite food, so maybe that is why I thought their potato puffs were so good, because the puffs are basically balls of mashed potatoes. They were not as seasoned as the ones at Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen, but they were stilll very yummy. The sauce the potatoes come with is kind of tangy - kind of like a creamy vinaigrette. Seating is very limited. Potato puffs took about 15 minutes to be ready, and this was not during a peak lunch hour. I would sacrifice a slice of cheeseboard pizza just so I would have room for potato puffs ^_^.

I've been here many times now. And I only go when I'm really craving their tater totes - they call them "crispy potato balls" - but in all honesty, they're tater totes. Expect really good (albeit pricey) food and long lines since there kitchen is poorly staffed. There isn't too much seating available so consider yourself lucky if you find a bench to sit. Pro-tip: no what you're ordering before you order. The "underpaid" hipsters who run this joint specialize in bad attitude and stink eye.
(4)Kim H.
My FAVORITE place in the East Bay! I absolutely love their lunch menu: I always get a sandwich, fries with Parmesan and garlic, and if I'm feeling crazy, potato puffs. I knocked off a star because the food is pretty pricey a person and because parking is extremely difficult. Also, getting a seat can be competitive, which I don't mind half the time because I like games. Tip: Order ahead. Wait times at any time of the day can be long (up to 20 mins).
(4)Christina L.
Small little place near Phil'z coffee, Andronicos, and Crepevine. It's actually across the street, just a tad bit hard to find. Service: It's a fast food type place so the servers are mainly focused on getting your orders in and out. Food: I love their potato ball with their signature sauce. Yum. They constantly change their menu, but I can never go wrong with a sandwich. They toast their bread lightly and put their special secret spread on it. Yum. Overall: I would definitely recommend his place.
