Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Good food at very reasonable price. Very large portions. Often crowded. A little dumpy inside... a place to eat, not to bring a date.

A few years ago I was in Yuma for work travel and El Charro was recommended as a good place for lunch, needless to say since, whenever I drive through Yuma I stop there. You need to try their tamale dinner, nothing better than a beef stuffed tamale covered in chili con carne. Plus they treat you like you are part of the family, couldn't ask for more!

My family lived in Yuma '63--'69 and we used to eat there occasionally. It was on 4th Avenue then. Ate at the new location on 8th St. Tuesday night for old times' sake - food was more than ample and good, not great - perhaps better than Chretin's, though. Great sunset view from the new location, pleasant service!

And on the 8th day.....God created Mexican Food and it's served up fabulously at El Charro. How I love this place. I don't make it back to Yuma that often but, when I do. El Charro is at the top of my list of places I have to go, while I'm there. The Margaritas are awesome, the wait staff call you mijo/ or mija like you're at your abuelita's house and the salsa, you'll dab behind your ears before you leave. You could play pin the tail on the donkey with the menu and not find yourself disappointed with the choice you make....But, allow me to make a few suggestions. To start with I would suggest the cheese pizza with green chili's, it's a sombrero sized flour tortilla with Monterey Jack cheese and green chili's and though a bit greasy, it's a good greasy, the kind you run the last bit of the tortilla around the pan to get the last of. Then I would suggest, everything from the chile rellenos, to the sour cream enchiladas, beef tacos and the grand daddy of them all......A Machaca Chimichanga Enchilada Style with Green Chili. Oh dear lord, it makes me want to drive the 2 hours to satisfy my desire and not tell my mom I was in town. It's just that good.

We ordered 4 tacos and it literally toke 30min and the tortilla were to thick and the the taste was not there, I mean I had some tacos from a street vendor last night that were more appetizing and authentic taste of Mexican tacos , anyway if you want tacos de carne asada find some other place because you will be let down. The horchata was to milky.

First, it's a big concrete square and the place was full. We couldn't speak to each other because it was so loud. Second, we ordered a cheese crisp. Love those but this one while huge was greasy and the edges were so tough we couldn't bite through. Third ordered three dishes and all of them came out the same color and tasted like canned chili. Between the lack of taste and the lack of ambiance, will not return.

Horrible. The salsa was too watery. The rolled tacos was so hard my son was struggling to eat it. My husband got the number one and the sauce was everywhere. Worse Mexican place ever. Don't go!!!
(1)Laura H.
Stopped in on the way from Tucson to San Diego. Service was really slow and the salsa was kris watery than I prefer. That said, the red saddle burrito was fantastic - tons of flavor and unlike any red sauce I've ever had. Chicken fajitas were ok - rice and chicken were a bit dry and over salted. The red saddle warrants a return though.
(3)Mike C.
Try the Combo numro Uno #1 if your extreamly hungry. My favorite is The Red Saddle Burrito followed by the Green saddle. Great local place if your looking to get away from the chains.

I drive to Yuma once a year from Washington just to eat at El Charro. Well, actually my folks spend the winters here so I suppose visiting them is one reason for the trip as well, lol. Dined here yesterday for the first time this trip and it was just as good as my previous visits. Excellent staff that make you feel like family and amazing food. The tamales are the best I have ever had, period. Other favorites include the folded beef tacos, giant cheese crisp and the huge warm flour tortillas for a buck. That's right, a buck! Margaritas are excellent as well. Looking forward to several more visits this year before its time to hit the trail back to the damp northwest. Now if they would just open up a location in Olympia.......
(5)Alex D.
Was kind of scared to go here was not as nice of a place as I thought it would be. But I was completely wrong their food was absolutely bomb. Had chicken fajitas very flavorful and the portions were huge. Also the tortillas came out with it and they were homemade. Wow! Loved them. This goes to show, don't judge a book by its cover. Staff is very friendly.

This is one of my favorite Mexican places in Yuma, but there are some minor drawbacks. Their food is fantastic, but their burritos and chile rellenos come out dry unless you pay extra for "enchilada style". I've had their salsa a couple times, and both times it was so different. One time it tasted good, but was watery, and the second time it tasted like they threw a can of rotel and a can of green chiles together....uh no-completely bland and boring. Their guacamole is really good. The biggest complaint I have is that there is this weird smell in there, like the floor is wet and never really dried out. It's very off-putting and your nose does not get used to it the longer you're in there, so I only do takeout from here. I love the food though.
(4)Deanna V.
So noisy! So much light we felt like we were in a pizza parlor! My husband ordered 2 carna asada tacos and they were cold and flavorless. I ordered 3 tacos and I'm sure I could have gotten better at Taco Bell!! The service was ok but had no red wine yet it was listed on the menu. We were looking for great food and just didn't get it!
(1)Larry G.
Salsa is like tomato juice, very watery, order nothing with beef as you end up with a man that full of grisel. Chicken is boiled with noseasoning , very bland. Restaurant is very noisy, impossible to carry a conversation. There is better out of here.
(1)Sarah R.
Excellent food. Wonderful service. Have been eating there since I was a toddler. It's our go to place in Yuma.
(5)Mike N.
Great place to take your family. Good food for a good price. Authentic Mexican food with friendly service. I recommend this place to everyone.
(4)Timothy R.
Used to be a great place to go! More than 30 minute wai for order, beans under heat lamp for dried terrible! Tables not bussed for over 30 minutes! Wow, what a change!
(2)Mike C.
We're snowbirds and come to Yuma in the winter for various periods of time. We've been going to the El Charro for along time so it's time for a review. We eat out a couple of times a week and this restaurant is one of our very favorites. They've been in business since 1947 and are very popular. First of all, don't expect a glamorous atmosphere because they don't have one. Just expect uniformly excellent, reasonably ethnic mexican food. They can be busy and noisy, but I guarantee you it's worth it. We've tried most of the menu and haven't struck out yet. Best tamale I ever ate! Two of their wait staff, Lena and Maria are absolutely wonderful. We look forward to coming in every week or two and will continue to do so. We highly recommend the El Charro!
(5)Marlin B.
Excellent food. Great service. The ambiance is nice--casual and laid back. The attitude in the place is great. Adri is a charming hostess. Wife had a green enchilada with the meat sauce. One of the best I've ever had! Excellent folded chicken taco also. I had the chili relleno, also with the green sauce. It was excellent! As I have mentioned in previous reviews of Mexican fare, if they don't get beans right, you are more often than not wasting your time at the place. El Charro gets them right! By the way, the portions are HUGE! And the prices are reasonable. If you want old-school family style Mexican food, this place is the place to go in Yuma. Highly recommended!
(5)Patti C.
Fabulous Friendly servers! Maria and Lena always make us feel so welcome! The tamales covered with red chili sauce are delicious! Green enchiladas are the best! folded tacos, retried beans, a giant cheese crisp with jalapeños, "mouthwatering"!! Can't wait for "next time"!!
(5)Susan H.
Horrible food! Not sure how the rating is this high. I went based on the rating but as soon as I walked up I noticed the bright lighting. The seating was tight and not comfortable. It was hard to have a conversation. Our order was messed up, the salsa wasn't good. We were looking for good authentic Mexican food and this definitely was disappointing.
(1)Lon R.
Wow, fourth time here in past few months, still great. Just had huevos rancheros. The beans and flour tortilla were the best we have ever tasted. If you want great service with a huge smile, ask for Maria.
(4)Steve S.
El Charro's has not forgotten that people come through their doors for great tasting food. This local restaurant has been doing it right since 1949 and makes some of the most delicious food that's very affordable. I was here for lunch last Friday and was not disappointed with a beef tamale covered with their red chile, it was amazing! I have eaten a lot of rice in other Mexican restaurants but nothing is as good as El Charro's rice, it's the best. I am looking forward to my next meal there already.
(5)Amy L.
In all fairness I'm a few months off with my review, I forgot all about it until today when I went to look up another place. All I can say is NOT GOOD!! We too went here because of YELP reviews. It was awful. The service was terrible. We waited forever for our food and then when it came it was yuck! Fajitas were terrible, the beef was chewy. I had to ask for guacamole...no guac with fajitas??? Salsa was sub par and the chips... meh! As for the décor, well that left ALOT to be desired. In addition, we had to wait a long time to pay our bill. So long we joked about dine and dash. We stood there for seriously 10+ minutes while at least 6 employees walked right by us. We would never go back. I don't see what all the rave was about.
(1)Ashley H.
I'll start by saying this is a great restaurant that I've gone to since I was a baby and the food is great! The bean and cheese burritos are divine - crispy (the grill them to add a little crunch - sounds weird, but it's great) and oozing with piping hot cheese, and I love the carne asada tacos. The cheese crisp is a must for any cheese lover too. The only problem with this restaurant is the service. Yes, the waitresses are nice but they move incredibly slow. It will take you 15 minutes to get a bowl of chips and salsa and sometimes over an hour to get your food. The environment is kind of noisy but that's because the floors are tile and the owners can't really help that. I mainly go here because the food is good and it reminds me of my childhood, but if I really want good Mexican food in Yuma, I go to Mi Rancho because the food is similar (maybe better), prices are slightly lower, service is better and faster, and it's a more relaxed atmosphere.
(3)Robert K.
First meal there in 1982. Sadly it just does not quite have it any more. What a shame. Everything our group ordered last month was simply not correct or not very good.
(2)Andy B.
Tiny family place. Delicious tortillas. Tacos: rolled, sonoran or folded. All good! Great drink specials. Nothing fancy but always filling and delicious.
(5)Kyle M.
This restaurant is so good, that my family has driven for 5 hours just to eat here! It's the quintessence of good Mexican food!
(5)Jack V.
This is a fairly authentic Mexican Food restaurant. They have great food and delicious salsa. Their service is so fast that on more than one occasion, I was barely able to finish a chip or two before my entree was brought out. Their prices are very competitive especially for the taste and size of the food that they serve. The dishes I've ordered have ranged from enchiladas, to burritos, to rellanos and it was all good. I come to Yuma monthly in the winter time for business and always make it a point to stop at El Charro. I cannot wait to come back!
(4)Randolph M.
I struggled between giving E.C. 3 or 4 stars. The dirty fork, sold out of chili rellenos, and very watery, bland salsa wasn't a good start, but they came back strong. They "found" some rellenos, (tasted great) the beef tamale smothered in chile con carne was wonderful. Their squeeze bottle of salsa was electric. Beef enchilada was great. Extremely friendly service, huge portions, and good prices puts this in a solid 4.

Wow !!! This was the First Time that We ate at El Charro after Friends in Yuma referred to it as the Best Mexican Food in Town. The Cheese Crisp Appetizer was Spectacular. The Fresh Chips and Salsa with Chunks of Fresh Tomatoes and Green Chiles was Amazing. They had a 3 Coronas for $6 Promo going on so I ordered a Bottle of Corona that went Great with the Chips and Salsa. My Husband had the 3 Three Flat Tacos Platter complete with Rice and Beans. I had the Enchilada Platter with 2 Shredded Beef Enchiladas with Red Sauce and Rice and Beans. These were the Best Beans and most Flavorful Rice I have ever eaten. Can't wait for our next visit to Yuma and El Charro.

My husband and his family were born and raised in Yuma, and they could not rave about this place enough. Apparently, its a tradition for them to go here and they have many fond memories. My thoughts on this place are not so rosy. Pros: -cheap beer, yay! -fast service and attentive waitstaff -the owner was on-site, checking up on tables personally -the cheese crisp appetizer is very good. I may be judging El Charro a bit harshly, because my expectations were so high based on the glowing reviews, both online and from my in-laws. Some places I review have food that is fantastic, but terrible customer service. El Charro has the opposite problem. With so many authentic and delicious options for Mexican food nearby, they should really try harder to make their food outstanding. Their salsa and their tamales are the main offenders. It seems like they slop a canned Hormel-style chili on top of certain plates or entrees, and its just awful. If I wanted that, I could have it at home with 99 cent hot dogs and call it a day. Their other menu items are basic, at their very best. I could get better Mexican food at Sombrero's. Since my husband and in-laws are such fans, I know I will be back to El Charro time and time again, so my quest for something good continues. I'll keep you posted.

Stopped here on the way from Prescott to San Diego for Christmas, my hubby is Mexican and found it online before we got here. We are from San Diego with fairly decent Mex food, Prescott food is awful! My hubby had two chile rellenos, they are served the way he was raised with them, no sauce and wrap them in a flour tortilla - they were delicious & huge! They make their tortillas every am. I had one chile relleno and a taco, the taco wasn't the greatest-would skip it if we go back. As you can read from other reviews the place has been around for a long time, not much atmosphere & loud if there are kids there. Margarita's (blended) are very good too! We found wait for food was slow, but again cr's are worth it.
(4)Robert W.
I've been eating here since it was on 4th street back in the early 60's. El Charro was my 1st indroduction to Mexican food and the bar to which I judge all others! I love the green enchiladas and rice with the traditional salsa in the squirt bottles. The Mexican Oregano really adds to the authenticity. Thanks for 45 + years happiness in "MY BELLY"!
(5)Kimmy W.
Disgusting - truly disgusting. I sent my order back. We were driving through on the way from San Diego to Phoenix and yelped some place to stop and get some dinner. El Charro was well rated so we set our GPS and pulled off the Interstate. I ordered the combination plate. It was a slop pile mess that looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. The rolled taco was cold, hard, and tasteless. The tamale looked like it was stuffed with canned hormel chunk meat. The beans and rice were bland. The green chile was watery and nasty. The chips were stale and the salsa was canned tomatoes with no flavor. Even the tortillas were not fresh. This was a disgusting pit stop...only the bathroom was more disgusting. Honestly, the plate they brought me looked like dog food. Don't say you weren't warned.

We were passing through Yuma on our way home from San Diego. Seeing the reviews here on Yelp made us want to try this place out. It sounded great. We even laughed at another reviewer's one star rating that was so unlike all the rest we couldn't believe it. Maybe it was a competitor we joked. But now, I totally apologize to that reviewer. After ordering, we waited about 30 minutes to get our food and the place wasn't even that busy. My wife ordered guacamole and our server totally forgot about it until our food was delivered. When it arrived, it was bland. I ordered a combo plate with a tamale and two rolled tacos with rice and beans. The rice and beans were the best part of the plate. The tamale was like no other tamale I have eaten. The meat was strange, odd flavor and overall the worst I have ever had. The meat in the rolled tacos was dry and had no flavor at all. My wife had a chimichanga and her review was so so. The only good comments were from my two friends. One agreed with me about her rolled tacos but said the sauce on her enchilada was great. The other friend had a salad with chicken and he was very happy with it. No chance I will go back here though. Now we figure the good reviews must have come from the owner's friends and family.

There are so many options for Mexican Food in the area, we have tried a lot of them El Charro is the BEST of the Best! we had the #17 Bistek Ranchero it was orgasmic. the service was spot on (Jess) the food was amazing. Seriously you have to try this family owned fantastic Mexican F ood you won't be dissapointed.
(5)russ h.
I've tried a lot of Mexican places in Yuma and I have to say, this is the best so far. We went with a group and everyone thought it was great. Of all the offerings we munched on, my favorites were the beef tamale in red sauce and the chile relleno. I had a beef taco and a chicken enchelada with the green sauce and it was good. They melt the cheese in the taco, then add the lettuce... nice touch. A dash of cotija on top would have been nice. The rice and beans were very good. Another of our group had a fish taco and said it was excellent. The piece of fish was very generous! But those who ordered the tamales and chile relleno scored (glad they shared!!). I'm getting hungry just writing this!!! The beer was cold and margarita was refreshing according to those who imbibed. My only knocks is that it took a long time to get our food, it seemed over 30 minutes. Also, the salsa in bowls on the table was so so, but the hot sauce in the squeeze bottle.... dilish!!! The server was very friendly and the place was quite crowded for 3:30 in the afternoon. We saw a chile quesidilla that was about as big as a large pizza and it looked amazing. A number of them were ordered while we were there. I look forward to going back and trying it.
(4)C M.
This was the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever ate at in my life! Salsa was canned stewed tomatoes with chili. The green chili beef burritos were terrible. Same canned slop, very little meat and soggy dripping tortillas. Service was very slow, for those of us who did try to choke some of it down there was heartburn and stomach aches all around, save your money and your time and go somewhere else!
(1)Clifford F.
My wife and I have lived here in Yuma since May of 2011 and we found El Charro and thiught we would give it a try and the food was ok. We haven't been here for several months so we decided to give it another try and it was very bad to say the least. The salsa they give you in a bowl, if you can call it salsa is just tomatos celery and water. I ordered a Chimichanga and the meat was DRY. We were both very unsatisfied. We totally prefer La Fonda and thats where we will be going from now on.
(1)Ann C.
This is my first eating stop when I visit family in Yuma. The flour cheese crisp(some reviewers here have referred to it as pizza) is spectacular. Do not thimk about the quantities of lard that went into the refried beans, just enjoy them. Best way to do that is in a mixed green chile burrito.
(5)Pat M.
Really, really good authentic Mexican food. This place doesn't skimp on the lard though, so prepare yourself for some grease. Beyond that, it is amazing. Try the green enchilada, rolled tacos or my personal favorite - their homemade tamales...if you ever find your self in Yuma, AZ that is!
(4)Theresa B.
This place was terrible! We were visiting Yuma and looking for a good, authentic Mexican place. The salsa was nothing more than canned tomatoes, no flavor at all. Yuk. Food was dry and tasteless. Our first clue should have been, not a single Mexican customer in the place. Only senior white folks, obviously fans of bland food. Very disappointing.
(1)Mark G.
This place has the best Abondigas soup !! El Charro is a family run business that really is down to earth. Nothing fancy here, basic tables and chairs and Mexican decor. The staff is friendly, lunch service is better than evening. When you go if you dont have the soup , get the red saddle burrito. MMMM..good. Enjoy
