Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

We are new to Tucson and wanted to grab a quick lunch. Yelped Italian and saw Tony's. We were in the area, so thought we'd give it a try. SOOOOO glad we did! I had the best Rueben I've had in years - if not EVER! My husband had pastrmi - also excellent! Toasted rye, melted cheese, just enough krout and 1000. YUM!! Atmosphere is like stepping on to a different planet. Sinatra playing, little tables, hungry people enjoying thier food. Prices are vey reasonable. Loved it! I am a potato salad critic - and I absolutely loved thiers! Had the canolli for desert -- "it'll be just a minute, we're making fresh filling." De-lish!! We will be back - again, and again!

I pass this place all the time, and from the street it looks like it's closed. IT IS NOT CLOSED! It is far from being closed. With the meal I had today, and the proximity to my current living quarters, I will return frequently. I had the Sky high (corned beef, pastrami, cole slaw, and melted swiss on an Italian roll) Sky high visually? Natsomache. I was actually disappointed when I saw the amount of meat in the sandwich. Sky high flavor wise? Absolutely! You would've thought I was on meth the way my pupils turned into hockey pucks. The bread is flippin' amazing and the quality of the meats was evident every time it hit your tongue. I didn't need a mountain of pastrami or corned beef. The pickle spear and the potato salad that accompanied were good. The crostini ( with mozz, and a sun-dried tomato pesto) was delicious! (It actually came out after my sandwich because the pesto had to be made from scratch! Yeah, instead of saying that they were 'out' they made some) The baklava was tasty, they had it refrigerated so the honey was a little hard. tonysitaliandelitucson.c…

The servers were very kind and personable. However, when I ordered, my salad was brown and then my order was messed up. For my first experience, I was a little disappointed. Maybe just because it was lunch time they were struggling. But I still don't intend to bring my business back.
(2)Mark K.
I had the Italian 8" sub, it was it was one of the best I've had. My friend ordered the new yorker and gave me a slice, it too was one of the best I've had. The staff was so friendly, I could eat there everyday!
(5)Michael H.
Great sandwich. Cool little place that looks like it has a lot to offer.

VIAL!!.. I recently purchased "fresh" mozzarella from this place and when I took out of the wrapping it basically liquified right in front of my eyes. I texture was all wrong and the smell was gross!.. I called and was told that they do make it fresh there but they freeze it right after.. so gross and a disgrace. As an Italian who recently moved to Tucson from NY I was appalled that this place considers itself an Italian deli. Will not be returining to this place!
(1)Brian H.
Excellent food. Enjoyed the sampler plate. Delicious garlic bread !! Will definitely return when I'm back in town .

So I grew up on this place but haven't been in a couple years as it was very far away from where I lived. Now I only live about 20 minutes away I went back. I ordered the Fill Your Fridge Pack. It was 2 lbs ground beef, 2 lbs homemade Italian sausage, 2 lbs prime rib-eye steaks (seriously the best marbling I have seen in a long time. It also comes with an American lunch pack ( I substituted teh Italian lunch pack) which was 1/2 lb Genoa Salami, 1/2 lb Cappacola, 1/2 lb Mortadella, 1/2 lb Provolone (all Boars head meats) a pound of potato salad ( I subbed macaroni salad) and 6 home-made sub rolls. and also three heat and serve pans (feeds 4) of either veggie or meat lasagna, eggplant or chicken parm, cheese ravioli, chicken alfredo, or stuffed shells. I went with chicken alfredo (my girlfriend loves it) Meat Lasagna, and Chicken Parm. I seriously got all this for 59.99. And yes it's groceries so no tax. I just had a sandwich and it was just as delicious as I remember. I seriously think I will be getting one of these every week, and pretty much skipping any trip to the grocery store I would ever make, except maybe for some potatoes or side veggies. This is enough food to feed us for a week and for only 60 bucks, and high quality too. I am so happy! Seriously give this place a try! They make regular food in house it is set up like a very small restaurant. I think the food is better than Roma imports which is why I bothered to drive 20 minutes each way instead of 5. Don't get me wrong I love Roma too.
(5)Tom F.
Good food, service and prices. You must try the Lasagna, the meatball sub and the Italian beef sub. Did I mention the Ziti special? Try that one too. The "Fill Your Fridge" package is not only a bargain but the food was great. No wonder they cater all over Tucson
(5)Sta S.

Now, I've never been to New York, but this is pretty much what I'd expect a hole-in-the-wall there to be like. Lots of meats and cheeses, antipasto, and assorted sweets fill the glass walled counter, and behind you as you order is a painted wall mural featuring Frank, Dean, Sammy, and that other guy. It's dark, old, and your date will look at you funny if you order "dine in". Doesn't matter. Heck, even the Boar's Head signs don't matter all that much. Despite the name, this place is run by a fella named Mark, who still makes his own cheeses. You don't come here for "atmosphere"- this place is for good food. The pizza is amazing (but not a good choice for taking home and microwaving the next day) and the pepperoni they use must be four inches across. The meat sauce for the spaghetti is great, and available in take home containers if you want to use it on your own noodles at the house. Even the Reuben, a sandwich places seem to screw up all the time, was fantastic. You can even get fridge filling packs, food for 4 for a week, in themes like Italian or American (picnic). Yup, it's a real deli that you can do your grocery shopping at, too. If you're sick of the chain restaurants and want to try a little local place, give Tony's a shot.
(4)Jeff T.
Hooray for the Rocky, with his blessed slab of garlic bread toasted just right, meats piled on ahigh. This place gets props for not having a "Boars Head" sign in sight; methinks they actually make their own meats, buy direct. And this shows in the quality of the meats that they pile upon your sammie. I like hearing the chop chop chop of a knife as they prepare the food from scrap, with non of the sandwich making automaton-like behavior found at "that other sandwich shop" Freezer case a little crowded and disheveled with various wares for sale. Gives it that nice neighborhood feel though Very no frills, but excellent value and the guys behind the counter are the real deal. In Tucson, this is as close as I have come to swinging by the neighborhood deli for a quick bite, and they make you feel right at home

Had a mediocre buffet dinner during a singing performance, but such are buffets. What burns me was that at the end of the night, the server came around with cannolis. When I went to pay, I was told there'd be an extra charge for the cannolis - they were NOT included with the buffet. They should have said something when they brought the cannolis around. NOT professional or honest at all!
(2)Jim H.
We priced Italian food catering for a wedding at several different places. Tony's beat the competition by a long shot. The food was very very good. It was delivered on time and met all our expectations. I'd recommend Tony's to my friends and family
(5)Christina S.
I wasn't thinking much when I decided to try Tony's but WOW was I surprised!! Some of the BEST Italian I've ever had and probably the cheapest too! Tony's kills Olive Garden any day and they're about 1/4 the price!! Amazing! If you haven't gone, GO!
(5)My P.
I miss this place sooooo. We would always get Pastrami sammies with the potato salad or whatever pasta salad they had that day. The. best. pastrami. sandwich. I. ever. had. *drool* Just perfect - I always wanted to order the pasta meals, or picnic packs but never had the reason - and now I am too far away. Miss you Tonys!
(5)Caleb T.
One of the greatest delis I've been in around town. I get a real authentic, and personable feel here. There deli meats are welllll.....SEASONABLE...Been going here for ages. Go you wont regret it.
(5)C N.
I've been to tony's for their family take 'n' bake lasagnas. They have this style meal for lasagna (meat & veggie), chicken parm, and eggplant parm. All are wonderful. I highly recommend.

Not quite what I was expecting. When I saw the reviews for this place, I was ecstatic because I just moved down the street from this place and really wanted to find a great italian place nearby. When I went in, it definitely is more of a deli than a restaurant, but I kinda dig that sort of thing. The guys behind the counter were super friendly. I ordered the stuffed shells. The portion size was pretty good. It LOOKED fantastic, apart from the plastic bowl it came in. 2 things were wrong about the taste, though. 1) The ricotta stuffing was not seasoned much (at all?) and 2) neither was the sauce. Not like the kind of thing that could be fixed with a little salt, like...wheres the garlic? wheres the onion? wheres the richness from using butter? I mean, I could tell that good effort was put into cooking it, it just didnt seem quite right. Overall, it was good enough that I still ate all of it though. Afterwards, the server came and I asked him if any of their desserts were home made, he told me the tiramisu was. I asked him if it was good, and he said "tell you what..." he grabbed the tiramisu and put it in front of me, "if you like it, you pay for it. If not, its on the house." Gotta love that kind of homey touch. It was fantastic! Really, really delicious. When I went to pay, he gave it to me half price anyway. I want to go back and try the pizza, but I doubt ill go for anything with their marinara again. Its good food, just not to my taste.
(3)Brendan W.
It's a good sandwich joint. Nice service. One review said they know their customers by name. That's true if your name is Frankie, Pauly, or Sal. A nice Italian deli, limited seating, check it out.
(4)Liz G.
We live in the neighborhood, but never seem to make it in to Tony's. It's been in business forever, so there must be a reason why. Did we enjoy our food? Will we be back? Yes, and no. The sandwiches we had (the Reuben and the Denver) were both pretty good, and the coleslaw we had on the side was excellent. Were they worh 7.99 each? probably not. And after having a few beers (Peroni of course), we were shocked to find out they sold for $4.99 each! We didn't see a sign, and while we should have asked beforehand, I still think this is a bit much for a bottle of beer. The canolli we had for dessert was pretty good, but I just had a better one at BZ's pizza two days ago. The spaghetti I saw our neighboring table eating looked (and smelled) very good, so if we go back, it will be to try that out. Finally, the service left something to be desired. I waited at the front counter for both the canollis, and to pay the bill, and both times the lady behind the counter took forever to come help me. She was wiping something down, she was putting something away, she was talking to her co-workers. She was doing everything except paying attention to the only customer left in the place.

Amazing sandwiches! The best Italian subs in town are here. If you want a real New York style Italian deli look no further. Get any of the1/2 lb Italian house heroes and you will not be disappointed, my favorite is "The Rocky" (Mortadella prosciutto melted provolone on garlic toasted bread). If you still have room get a homemade canoli or slice of cheesecake. But its not just the sandwiches here that are great. They have insane dinners that a very reasonably priced (cheap!) , a huge family take home menu, pans of homemade lasagna for $9.99,heat and serve trays of Ravioli, Spaghetti & meatballs, Stuffed shells, Eggplant or Chicken Parmigiana . SO GOOD!

Hey, Fancy it is not but if you want good food made on site and like Italian and Jewish, this is as good as any! What it like in fancy it makes up in congeniality with the two guys who make the food, grow their own fresh herbs and salad materials and all the scrumptious dishes they are always coming up with! All the staff are pleasant and very quick with service and revisiting your table. It's like family every time we go. The cannoli's are made on order, fresh and yummy, as well as the tirimisu, cookies, cakes. A great place for a good meal and fun! Dee S
(4)Bonnie F.
YUM. The Rocky was, without question, one of the best Italian-style subs I've ever had. Hubby and I split one and it was more than enough food. Cannoli was just okay. Shells was fantastic as they are filled when you order them, but filling was more custard-like instead of ricotta. Nevertheless, The Rocky made up for our disappointment in the cannoli. Prices are VERY reasonable. By no means the fanciest place in town, but the food and price can make you overlook that.
(5)BARBARA L.
Our first time here. Wonderful food that get our 5 stars. Too cold inside with the AC cranked and the fans going and tight quarters on the only restroom which could be a bit cleaner. The front is clean though - 3-4 stars for the cold and the restrooms but we sat outside on a very comfortable March day and used the restroom anyway. We enjoyed an 8" hero of roast beef, turkey, etc. on an excellent Sesame-coated Italian roll and a reuben on rye and both were excellent. They come with a side of potato, macaroni salad, coleslaw or chips. Refills on the drink and a couple of delicious cookies made the total $20.45 including tx. We could have had their specials of the day which seem a dollar less from the normal menu or just some interesting specials and they were doing a sausage or hot dog on the grill for a special of $2.50. But we went deli sandwiches and had great meal. High quality meats and promising Italian dinners and pizza and NY cheesecake are on the menu too. Some days in the future. Not extraordinarily fancy place but Great food for the casual fast meal or take home. We will return. (They probably take orders on the phone as a couple of customers arrived and quickly received takeout.)

Best deli sandwich in Tucson none compare the Italian food is great the soups are wonderful if you want to cook at home by their fresh ingredients mark is a real treat this place is a landmark highly recommend
(5)Erin B.
What a great deli! they make a delicious "Denver Sandwich" - hot pastrami, tomatoes, red onion, melted swiss and pepperoncinis!! A lot of friends and colleagues frequent this deli and Ive never hear of a bad experience. I also HIGHLY recommend the veal parmesan finished with a DELICIOUS cannoli! This is the best Italian deli!
(5)Jerry S.
I love this place! It is truly a hidden gem. I don't know how they keep their prices so low considering the quality, and the quantity of food you get. And the service is equally awesome. Very nice Deli, and frozen entre selection too.
(5)Sue B.
We've been coming here for over 20 years, and this place is simply amazing. It's a REAL New York-style Italian Deli selling all kinds of meats, antipasto, breads, heat 'n serve dinners, etc. all priced very reasonable. It's also an eat-in restaurant, rather small, with service a little slow at times, but well worth the wait. I find the decor to be charming and what you would expect from a deli. The food is scrumptious, made with fresh and authentic ingredients. The Sicilian pizza is my favorite. The flavor is amazing, totally different from chain pizza. They have a delicious assortment of desserts which we sampled on my birthday last year. Everything is just scrumptious. This is not a place to zip in and zip out. Because everything is made fresh on the premises, you need to give them a little time. They have special events from time to time with live music on the back patio, and all you can eat dinners. They also do holiday dinners with all the trimmings, which we did one year when I was very ill. It's not the same as Mom's, but it was very good. They also do catering. The staff are very friendly and make you feel very welcome.
(5)Art M.
Thank you yelp for guiding us to this hidden gem of an italian deli that we would/could never have noticed. What Tony's lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in the quality of food and service. I ordered the italian special sub and it was absolutely perfect. The olive oil kissed sesame roll, the boars head meats and provolone, generous portion sizes priced right and served by a friendly staff. My one complaint is that Tony's is an 8hr drive from my home. Were the deli in my hometown, I'd be a regular for sure.
(5)Lee B.
My first impression of Tony's is that it opened fifty years ago, and they haven't changed anything but the prices since then, and maybe not even the prices all that much. When I come across an old deli like this, I think that there must at one time been Italian delis sprinkled all over Tucson, and only the best survived. You can take out or eat in, they have little tables with red vinyl cloths. There's a deli counter where you can see various take out dishes, and freezer/fridge section with premade items, such as manicotti, stuffed shells, lasagna etc. You can get any of these items hot, or cold or frozen. The folks are happy to provide you salad and/or garlic bread to accompany your meal. I've had a variety of the food, and my only complaint is that it could use more heat. The food is much improved with a judicious amount of red pepper flakes. But if you're looking for an easy, cheap, take out meal, this is a pretty good place. They offer holiday meals here, so you can pick up a turkey dinner and all the fixings for Thanksgiving, and they offer lunch specials, where they hook you up with enough cold cuts and cheese to make a lot of sandwiches. My favorite thing to have here is the pizza. The crust had the great oily, crunchy toothy yuminess of really great bread, and the pepperoni was a thick layer under the cheese. I cannot imagine there is better pizza anywhere in Tucson. If you live near here and are buying pizza from a chain, you are committing a sin against yourself. (Of course, if you get one of these pizzas you are likely to commit the sin of gluttony against yourself...I suppose this is a decision you'll have to wrestle with on your own.)
(5)Elyse P.
I liked Tony's. It's definitely a deli and would be best for lunch ... although you might not make it through the rest of the day due to a carb coma. We went for a low key dinner on a Friday. We had the place to ourselves (which was kind of fun) other than another couple who came in for pickup. The waitress was very friendly and efficient. I was in the mood for garlic and the garlic bread did not disappoint. Crazy good. I ordered the eggplant parm and a meatball and my hubs got a Sky High (corned beef, pastrami, coleslaw, melted swiss). He loved his sandwich and I enjoyed the eggplant ... wouldn't get the meatball next time - too dry. And we couldn't resist splitting a cannoli. Yum. A good Italian deli, with a mural of the rat pack and the crooners playing ... works for me.

So the hubby and I were planning a family gathering and didn't have time to cook. We had heard good things about Tony's and after comparing catering prices at a few places around town we decided to give it a try. The man Mike that placed my order with over the phone was nice, payed attention to detail. My husband arrived about 20 minutes early and to his surprise everything was ready. Our order was accurate. The food was still hot when he got home and everything was delicious. Everyone was commenting on the food and we were very pleased with the portions and the prices. We will definitely return and would recommend this place for some good Italian food.
(4)Dylan T.
The food here is extremely good! I really wish I could give it give stars because each time I have eaten here, I have left completely satisfied. However, the wait time after an order is placed is excessive. On two occasions, my entire lunch break has been spent waiting for my food.
(3)Shane P.
If your from New York City area and you missing the food. This is the place for you.. True Brooklyn Italian deli.. the best Stromboli I have ever had an I'm from the east coast! The pizza great! The calzones great! The Ruben great! Walk into Tony's deli and you will be teleported to Brooklyn New York..
(5)Chas P.
We have been here before to get some cold cuts but have never tried their actual food. After seeing the reviews we decided to give the food a go. We order before we arrived, quite a selection since we could not make up our minds what we wanted to try and we figured we could have leftovers for the weekend. The place itself you can definately tell has been here for thirty seven years, it is dated and I don't mean in a bad way. It is just old. The employees are extremely friendly and courteous. They greeted us as soon as we walked in, figured out that we were the large order that had called in for take out and let us know that they were working on it and it would be awhile and to have a seat. Once the food was ready, they brought it out and went over it with us before we left to make sure they had everything. We took it all home and sampled everything. We got four different dinners to include the Braciola, Spaghetti, Sampler and Spaghetti Carbonara. Everything was excellent and honestly the best Italian we have had in Tucson. We will definately be going back and we will recommend this to family and friends. We regret we have lived here all our lives and never tried Tony's before now. Such a shame.
(5)Nate B.
Good food at what I think is a fair price. Nice selection in this smallish place. I've only been here twice, but I've been treated like family each time, and I'll always make the guys bring me here for lunch when I'm in town from now on. I've had sandwiches so far but pizza or pasta comes next.
(3)Jeff G.
the rocky and the italian are as good as italian heros/subs get. fantastic crusty bread, great cold cuts and cheeses. the real deal. and the family deals are a great bargain.
(5)Andrew A.
I've seen this place many times but just never thought to stop in. I tend to avoid the east side of town, esp the SOUTH east side. Well the other night a friend and I were in the neighborhood of 22nd n Wilmot and after driving by a couple times we finally saw it. It is a TINY lil shop w no more than 6 or 8 tables. You can tell some of the folks working there have been there for decades. Service is a little slow but well worth the wait. Since it was our first visit, I went ahead and ordered an old staple....the chicken parm sub. I think it was about 9 bucks but it was delicious and I couldn't even finish half of it. My buddy had this Italian cheese steak sub which was like a regular cheese steak but w the addition of marinara sauce. He was goin nuts over this thing! It was also phenomenal and huge! So far this is the best Italian deli spot I've hit since my return to Tucson. I am actually going back to Tony's for lunch today to introduce its glory to my father....he's gonna freak out!
(4)Krista T.
The food is wonderful! Service was quick. It's nothing fancy, but you wouldn't know that from the flavor.
(4)Kurtis R.
This Place is great. Owner is always there and very nice. Staff treats you like family and for the family packs that we always get, the price is incredible. It is so well priced.
(4)Betsy B.
I've been there a number of times. I always have one of the specials which used to be $6.99 but just got raised to $8.99. However still a good deal. The special includes an entree, salad and garlic bread. The salad is fresh and includes olives, pepper, onion, lettuce, tomato. The garlic bread is delicious. I especially enjoy the ravioli-lately the special has been with pesto sauce and it's very good. It's one of the smaller portions of the entrees. Most entrees are very large and you take some home with you. The pepperoni ziti is also delicious and a huge portion. They have gluten free pasta and bread as well. It is a small place. Much of the business is takeout. There are about 10-12 tables inside. There is a patio in back that holds more people and they sometimes have a special event there that has a buffet and entertainment. They have a lot to offer but be sure to check out the specials which are a great value. It is a little tricky to find as it is a bit off the road but is on the north side of 22nd St. west of Wilmot.
(4)Brenda S.
Food may taste good, but I just couldn't get past the filth. This place looks like it hasn't been thoroughly cleaned in at least two years. I lost my appetite the more I looked around. I won't be back.
(2)Erin B.
THERE IS NO OTHER DELI. Don't even say Roma Imports to me. Don't. Even. I've delighted in Tony's Italian Deli since childhood and it thankfully has not changed one bit since! My family and I keep coming back for the Sicilian pizza with HOUSE-MADE ITALIAN SAUSAGE. Oh my god. I can't even explain how delicious it is. Just order it for goodness' sakes. Truly robust, high-quality, authentic ingredients do not get any better anywhere. You can order in (just be aware the service is very casual and very slow) or take-out. No frills here and not much in the way of ambiance. It almost adds to its divey, New York-dingey charm. You can buy a wide variety of Italian deli goods to take home and it's very reasonably priced. The staff also prepares many of their pasta dishes to-go, heat-and-serve style. A great idea for a quick dinner on the run and I highly recommend the eggplant parmesan as well as the manicotti. Truly mouthwatering. Delicious desserts -- the cannoli and cheesecake are just super. I've never been in any Italian spot before or since in the Southwest that serves real spumoni. AND ITS AMAZING. This place gets a bad rep for being slow (who cares! Worth it!) and because it's old and outdated (We are here to eat, people! Get over it!). Just eat it. Eat it all.
(5)Jeb P.
This was our 2nd time at Tony's and it was as fabulous as the first. We have been looking for a good pizza place since we moved to Tucson earlier this year and Tony's is it. Sandwiches are delicious too. Service is always great, everyone is so nice and helpful. We ordered their Thanksgiving meal with a 16 lb turkey and all the fixens! Desserts are wonderful too, we ordered a cheesecake to go with our Thanksgiving meal. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a holiday tradition, Tony's cooks the meal, we get to eat it! Don't let the lack of ambiance fool you, if you've been to NYC you know that most of the mom and pop places aren't fancy, but have the best food. Don't waste your time at a chain, try Tony's, you will definitely be glad you did.
(5)Lizz D.
Best Thanksgiving dinner ever!!! I couldn't come close to making stuffing and gravy that well. I'll be ordering all my holiday meals and any special occasion meals from here.
(5)Ned R.
Only place in all of Tucson that sells authentic New York style crumb coffee cake. That's because they have it shipped in from New York. All of their Italian dishes are true to the word "Italian". I just finished a plate of their homemade meat ravioli topped with their made from scratch marinara sauce, and all I could think was "Amore" during the consumption of it. If you love Italian food, and I mean real Italian food stop by this place and try it. You won't be disappointed.
(5)Neo M.
Finally! Authentic cuisine in Tucson! We moved here 10 months ago due to job relocation and have tried places to dine based on written reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. Dissatisfied at every turn...UNTIL...LO and BEHOLD! My partner and I stumbled upon Tony's Italian Deli by chance! The cannoli is just as in Italia -- not overly sweetened or Americanized. Authentic! The pizza with meatball slices -- voila! Meatballs with meat and not filler, not soft and mushy and incredible spices (Mediterranean, I think, perhaps cumin). The osso bucco is dynamite -- large portion of beef that just falls off the bone on a bed of orzo, although not with the traditional tasty marrow. Plus I can vouch for the veal saltimbocca and eggplant parmigiana. The chicken alfredo is mouth watering. Every dish is made ready to order and absolutely fresh and authentic. But they also have dishes made up in advance in the refrigerator for taking home to heat up. Be aware that some dishes have a preponderance of garlic and oil. Our goal is to try all the items on the menu. They seem to have wicked reuben and pastrami sandwiches that look out of this world. We attended an evening event in October with a band and patio seating. The items at the buffet -- absolutely incredible! Everyone was very cordial and engaging. Occasionally my workplace has Roma Imports cater. Trust me. Roma Imports' food tastes like cafeteria dining compared to Tony's Italian Deli. Tony's Italian Deli caters with authentic food and a price that can't be beat. December my partner and I ordered Tony's Italian Deli special prime rib holiday meal with sides. Did I say garlic and basil and more garlic and basil? Crispy outside prime rib but juicy and just right inside. Oh yah! Will probably get the holiday meal of lamb for Easter. I encourage you to try the pistachio gelato too. It comes in a pint or 1/2 quarter container I think and is a bit pricey but worth it as an occasional treat. Unsure but I think the cherries in it are soaked in liquor. Scrumptious! And lest I forget, the garlic bread really is -- real garlic and real bread. Not like some places where the garlic bread is an afterthought or leftover stale hot dog buns. Huge portions by the way regarding everything we've ever ordered. Their take-outs for two provide four meals for the two of us. We have ordered take-out when we have had guests for dinner. When calling, give the chef plenty of notice to prepare. Sometimes it gets crazy busy there with take-out orders. Given the inexpensiveness in general of the menu items and the top quality of authentic Italian food, how can anyone not tip generously? Now, the place itself, let's admit it, is a real dive. I was hesitant to even go inside when I first discovered it. But the warm welcome by Mark and Karen reminded me of childhood days back on the farm in Ohio where no one is a stranger. On our second visit they had already remembered and called us by our first names. When I call for take-out, they know who I am! And a big shutout here: THEY WELCOME DIVERSITIES OF PATRONS!! And the place is clean! Every time I look up or over someone on staff is sweeping or wiping. Tony's Italian Deli looks like it just had a new coat of paint. Get this -- a big pet peeve of mine at restaurants but -- at Tony's Italian Deli, even the ceiling fan is spotless! I'm MOST IMPRESSED! I honestly don't get how anyone can go to chain restaurants (Olive Garden, Macaroni's, etc.) or Zagat top rated tourist traps, which are a dime-a-dozen everywhere, when there is something as amazing and inexpensive as Tony's Italian Deli. Mark and Karen and team, and Mr. Tony, you guys rock!

This place is AMAZING! It reminds me of an old school, NY deli you would see back in the golden days of our country. A place you would expect a couple of gangsters to be sitting in, eating a Reuben and relaxing. So far I have yet to be disappointed....except when my plate is empty. That's one thing they haven't gotten down yet is the magical, always full plate. Everything there is homemade and fresh and you can taste the quality in every bite. My only recommendation would be to GET THERE EARLY! Lunch time is packed and that place only holds less than 20 people and it's a tight fit, but worth the wait.

For me, there isn't a whole lot to say about Tony's "Italian" Deli. It's filthy, the staff wasn't terribly helpful or friendly, and the food wasn't very good. Actually, my turkey sandwich tasted like someone sprayed some Windex on it or something. Maybe that's a sign that they actually clean the place, but I'd prefer if the cleaning products weren't on my food. I couldn't finish my sandwich because it just really tasted off and I didn't want to get sick. Everyone else seems to love this place though, so maybe we went on an off-day, but that day was so off that we'll never go back. There are good Italian delis in Tucson (Roma Imports, Fortunato's), so don't waste your time on this grubby place.

Holy cannoli this place is off the charts great. I absolutely love their sandwiches. Huge portions of delicious meat filled goodness. The quality of meat is great. I love the sides and desserts. It feels like being at an old school neighborhood deli in New York. I love this place so much! The prices are great. The place is small. There are various types of italian family style take home dinners. You can get cannolis, tiramisu, cheesecake... Chicken Parm, eggplant parm, italian sausage... It is all here!

Had a pepperoni and garlic pizza. Very heavy on the cheese. Crust was inconsistent. Overall good but not great. Will I go back? Maybe.

This place has the worst pizza I have ever eaten. I am pretty sure they reheated leftover pizza from yesterday. You want to like mom and pop places but not this one. Your better off eating eating at a chain then this dirty little hole in wall with terrible pizza. Maybe the sandwiches are good but I would be afraid the bread would moldy or something.

I've been procrastinating with putting up reviews. I guess I have the writer's disease where we feel we cannot write at all. And that's how I feel. Putting that aside, and cautiously coming up to the review podium, I'll give this assay of goodness into the world of Yelp. I've been here probably ten to fifteen times now, and they have never let me down. Tony's Deli has a great assortment of worthwhile meals to choose from. The pizza is absolutely amazing despite what other reviewers say. I think that it's not the best of the world, but its unique taste makes it one of the best. Their lasagna's outstanding; they have the greatest lasagna I've tasted to date, and some of the least expensive. You would be able to tell each time they've added work to the lasagna, and not just warm it up and pop it in the oven. Their sandwiches are some of the most delicious sandwiches I've had. There was a special that had horseradish and mustard, two condiments that I have the least desire for, and made it surprisingly edible. The food's amazing and all, but their trump card would actually be the atmosphere. It's not too busy throughout the day, maybe one or two tables being used, suiting it up for a quiet environment; and then there's the homely feel that we all love to stay, dine, and live in. Everywhere you look it feels nostalgic, like old food containers in the distant past (I'm still young, okay?) and the table covers and music. Last yet greatest aspect would be the customer service. Whenever I come in there's always someone that takes care of me, and if I have a hard time ordering they'll help me choose. The first time I came in I was greeted by this young lady (I can never remember names, bad habit I have), and she actually showed me around, told me what her favorite drink was, and helped me when I ordered. I give it max rating because it deserves it. I've already recommended this deli quite a few times and hopefully will give it more business through my peers on the job. It's never a bad time to just come in and enjoy yourself at this place.

Terrible This place would last a week in NY. Could use a good cleaning and somebody that can cook southern Italian food.

We stopped in here hoping for an authentic Italian deli. The sandwiches (Italian subs) were bland and nothing to write home about. Very disappointing. I can't even imagine trying anything else after that experience.

My wife and I love this little restaurant. The first thing that hits you on entry are the delicious smells. The sauces are very fresh and "pop", making for truly memorable dishes. My favorite is the saltimbocca. Seating is a bit tight, but don't let that deter you.

What an amazing place! I would have never known it was there if I hadn't done a search on Google. There Alfredo sauce is to die for. Not to mention I hate overcooked pasta, but they have no problem with it. They also are a deli, so all their sandwich meats are cut right there! The bread rolls for the sandwiches are amazing and crusty.... That's pretty hard to find now a days. There pizza is lacking, and I wouldn't order it again after the first time. But with the amazingly good sandwiches and pasta dishes I can over look that ;) You also can't beat their prices on their prepared food. I make sure to go there at least twice a month.

What's the deal?? Is this place totally bi-polar? ...Because they get either 5's or 1's. I don't know what the hype is about and felt pretty disappointed when I left. I had bookmarked Tony's because it was local and had good yelp star-age, but I left feeling cheated and a little grossed out. The interior is dark and none too clean. Yeah, the mural is neat, but is it enough to distract you from the inadequate cooling and the sour-sauce smell of the water they used to *clean* my table? It's also pretty cramped in there, from the seating to the ordering line to the dingy bathroom. They have Italian goods for sale on the walls and on some rink-a-dink shelves, but they look like they're more for decor than anything else because the layer of dust on them tells me they might be more than a little aged... I got the Italian sampler and I gotta say it wasn't much of a sampler. Everything came smothered in the same (mediocre) red sauce. What was underneath probably needed to be hidden, because it wasn't that pretty or that appetizing. I would have preferred Olive Garden. The accompanying salad had a decent amount of black and green olives on it and even a few marinated mushrooms, and the garlic bread was the tastiest part of my meal. My husband's sandwich (the sky high? something like a modified reuben) was haphazardly constructed and seriously underwhelming... no way would I eat here again, even if it was on someone else's dime. I'm even too ashamed to tell my Italian friend I spent money here. The owner and staff were really nice people, although our waitress seemed slightly deaf--they are the only reason I feel bad for leaving them a single star. Go to Roma Imports instead, even if you have to drive an extra 20 minutes.

New to Tucson, so I was trying to find a good deli like one back home in ny, I found it here at tony's. Great sandwiches, great service, great price

If this is authentic italian, then eegee's Lasagna must be made by the pope himself. The staff was great, the atmosphere was true to a deli, the food was bad. I kept expecting Robert Irvine to show up and ask me what I thought about the food. My wife got the Italian sampler and every item tasted just like the next item, bad. I have to wonder if they tasted their own food. I got a sandwich which came on a bun out of a bag. It was blan at best. Hate to slam a local joint, but I left the place with a voice in my head saying "No way will I ever go back".

Unbelievable. You know those mom and pop stores/restaurants that you think of that are amazing? Well this is it people. This was arguably the best location for a traditional Italian sub ever. My pop got the Rocky and i got the Reuben (Irish sandwich in an Italian bar was awesome). I recommend both, but i thought the Reuben was better. Go and eat my friends!

I've lived in Tucson about a year and haven't found too many places I'm as fond of as Tony's. I found this place my first week here thanks to Yelp. I have to say, they make an amazing sandwich. The staff is great and very friendly. Top-notch service. The place is an old-school version of an NY deli. The meats are wonderful. They have more choices than you can fathom and everything is delicious. This is a place where foodies go. I religiously order an Italian Special (sandwich). You can't go wrong with this place. Give it a shot. You won't be sorry.

I've been going to Tony's since I was a little bambina on my father's shoulders. My father's family is from Yonkers, New York, and when he moved here as a teenage, he missed home. Tony's Deli was mecca to him while I was growing up. A lot of my college and work friends were squeamish about this place. I had to explain to them, it's a legit deli. It's cramped, it's a little greasy feeling, and it's dim. It feels like home to me. Red & white checkered table clothes (a little obvious Italian, but it's OK). Beautiful cuts of meat behind the counter, freezer full of cheese & pre-prepared ready to go meals (and Cannoli pie!) Tony's is also one of the few "west coast" deli's that does not pre-fill their cannolis, which keep them crispy and delicious! The sandwiches are crazy delicious. The Rocky is my favorite by far; mortadella, prosciutto, provolone, tasty garlic toast bread. The pre-prepared dishes are great too, totally brings me back to my Grandma Annie's baked ziti that would shut down the block in Yonkers. Never had the pizza, but it might be worth a shot. The guys behind the deli counter are great. They always say hello, and they will remember you forever (one remembered my father by name even though he hasn't been in there for over 10 years.) I'm an east coast Italian girl at heart, despite living in Arizona, and I love that loud, in your business, aggressively friendly Italian mentality. If you're not too hoity toity, and don't mind a cramped deli, this is the best place I've been to that's not New York.

An original. There is a huge rat pack mural on one wall, shots of the New York skyline (including the Twin Towers) and signs reminding you not to forget your canolis everywhere you turn. The old standards playing overhead soothe even the most savage beast while waiting for an order of Stromboli with a huge side of the tastiest homemade sauce ever. The atmosphere and eats are deli heaven. Get a salad with the house dressing to start (like the Olive Garden's, but BETTER) and grab a Henry Weinhard's brewed soda like I did, or maybe a snoot of house wine. Anyway you slice it, you're gonna' love it like family when you're done.
