I've been a huge fan of sushi for nearly a year now. At first I was unsure of what I liked, what was good, and what to expect. Well at this point, I feel like I have a pretty good "standard" for what I want out of a sushi bar. I've sampled a lot of them in my travels, and for the most part I have liked what I found. Well I knew it was only a matter of time before I came across a poor example of Japanese cuisine. Unfortunately it had to happen while I was on the road and really needed a good "comfort meal." Sushi as comfort food? Yeah, that's me. Anyway... read on to see why Sushi Cortaro was my first real "lemon" of a sushi experience. Service: 1/5 This is pretty much why. I have rarely been treated so poorly at a restaurant, and never this poorly at a Japanese restaurant. We were seated as soon as we walked in the door......... and then forgotten. We had to wait several minutes for them to bring a high chair for our son. Then we waited several more minutes to have our drink order taken. Then we waited who knows how many minutes to actually receive our drinks. Noticing a pattern developing here? Refills on the water glasses were nearly impossible to come by. Getting any kind of attention from the staff here was a total exercise in frustration. On top of that, the presentation of our food was highly irregular. As I said above, I have been to a lot of sushi bars in the past year, and I have never been served like this. Our order came out entirely "piecemeal." Now this might make sense if we had ordered appetizers, or desserts, but all we ordered was sushi. It came out totally haphazardly and without and real rhyme or reason. One roll would show up, then some nigiri, then another. At one point I tried to ask the server if they had forgotten half of our order. It just made no sense and was very frustrating. And all this on top of being absurdly slow. By the time our last ordered roll arrived, our son was totally out of patience and we were already more than ready to leave. Overall it was just a very frustrating experience. Food: 3/5 As far as the sushi itself goes, it was ok. It certainly doesn't compare with some of my best sushi experiences (Tokyo Sushi, Las Cruces, Kazoku, Tucson, and Sushi Tango, Fremont.) Again I wonder how a place can mess up something as simple as nigiri, but these guys manage. One piece of my salmon nigiri had a sliver of wood in it. Thankfully I saw it before I ate it. And the halibut nigiri was absolutely drowned in soy sauce. I get that some people like a little soy sauce, and some people even like a lot. But I've never seen nigiri served with the sauce already added. It always was at the diner's discretion. Not here. It totally ruined the taste of the fish, and halibut is my absolute favorite, even more than salmon, but it's too pricey to indulge in regularly... which made their treatment of it that much harder to swallow, literally. The other rolls were tasty and well presented. I especially enjoyed the Christmas Roll, which was a mix of three types of fish with some special sauces. So they did do a few things right here. Unfortunately the negatives just so overwhelmed the positives that it was difficult to enjoy the few things that they did do well. Overall Impressions: 3/5 Now take this with a grain of salt as you already know I'm pretty negative on this place. But the atmosphere here just feels like they are trying too hard to be more up-scale than they actually are. The decor is very modern. To me it felt more suitable to a modern American style restaurant than Japanese. The place looks nice, don't get me wrong... but the "feel" is just wrong to me. It doesn't say "sushi bar" or "Japanese restaurant" to me. I felt like I should be ordering a rack of lamb or something. As far as value goes, the prices here are actually pretty good. The nigiri is right in line with pretty much every other sushi bar I've been to. The rolls are a bit cheaper than most, although if you're the type that likes a lot of the "fancy" cooked rolls with wild combinations of sauces and such, you won't find much of that here. And to me that is a positive. Much of what qualifies as "sushi" here in the US is a far cry from the traditional preparations. Overall the food is decent, the place looks good, and you'll get good value for your money......... if you get served at all. Maybe your service experience will be better than mine, but based on what I got, I have to advise "steer clear."

I usually rate beer first but we have only been there for lunch and haven't had beer so no rating there. But, the sushi is really good here - especially the Chef's Specials. The service is always excellent and prompt so I am a big fan. Really do like this place.
(4)Kelley S.
Sat down, ordered, and less than 5 minutes later our food starts arriving. On the reorder, my 1 roll was made in less than 2 minutes! I personally love the tootsie roll. But let's not pretend that all the rolls here aren't amazing. Cause they ARE! !!!! They are slightly smaller than other places but that is a huge plus for the all you can eat buffet. Definitely the best sushi place in town!
(5)Jill M.
This was a great place. It was constantly busy but still quiet and comfortable. The food was excellent and I left happy.

I am a frequent visitor to Sushi Cortaro and have never had a bad experience. The staff is friendly, the service exceptional, and the sushi is fresh. And speaking of the sushi...oh yummmm!! I can't help but overindulge each time I visit! Try the New Orleans roll with real lobster - delicious! And my favorite Lollipop rolls - they melt in your mouth. The presentation is always beautiful and the flavor is phenomenal - it awakens your senses and makes your mouth happy!

Staff is very attentive and be of the bet sushi places in Tucson. Love coming here with my husband for a sushi date night!

The sushi here is good, but the service has always been very friendly and prompt. Parking is a limited but the lunch specials are on point! Don't deny by yourself and Give them a try today!

My husband and I decided to try this place since we're always on the lookout for a decent sushi place on the Northwest side of town. The dining area was open and had a nice modern decor. We ordered the softshell crab appetizer and a few of their Sushi Cortaro specialties (Treasure Island, Temptation roll, New Orleans roll, Yellowtail Samba and Fat Boy roll). The softshell crab was crispy, tasty and not at all greasy. I loved the Temptation and the Fat Boy rolls! The Temptation roll contained lobster and lots of crunchy bits rolled in cucumber. The Fat Boy roll had shrimp tempura and was drizzled with two different sauces, a creamy "yummy" sauce and a second ponzu sauce. Both were delicious. The Treasure Island came in a martini glass and consisted of a salmon, yellowtail and tuna salad in an avocado and was definitely my favorite! You have to try this if you come here! All in all, I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was friendly and courteous, and the food was fresh and very good. We'll definitely come back, especially since it's nearby!

FINALLY NW Tucson has a decent quality sushi joint. Recently opened in 2011 sushi cortaro is already building a good name for itself. They offer 2 menus, an all you can eat menu for twenty bucks or a traditional menu. The all you can eat menu is one of the best deals going in Tucson. The quality and selection is very good and Fei. The sushi chef doesn't skimp, cheat, or play any of the games that other all you can eat sushi restaurants do in Tucson. While the place is still very new service on my visits has been outstanding. I am sure ill be a regular.
(5)White R.
Ok, I guess there is a difference in sushi California and Arizona. This place uses mayo in their sauces, which can really drown out the sushi flavor. I found myself scraping it off quite a bit. The atmosphere and service were pretty good, and selections were good as well. We will probably come back, but will make sure to stay away from certain rolls drowned in their mayo sauce.
(3)Debbie B.
Lucked out on getting there for Happy Hour. An order of Edamame, two orders of rolls and a beer for $10! The service and food was excellent.

My husband and I have been to Sushi Cortaro twice now for its all you can eat deal, and we've had an overall positive experience both times. It's been several months since the first time we were there, so I can't make too many specific comments on that first experience, but I CAN say that we were really impressed with both the quality of the fish and the prompt and friendly service. Last Friday was our most recent outing at Sushi Cortaro, and that's what I'll be discussing in particular. So, the good: For one thing, I was a total klutz and made a huge mess before we even had a chance to order our food. The dishes they use for soy sauce are little square white troughs, which, once filled, looked a lot like my cell phone out of the corner of the eye. So, in order to clear a space in front of me, I grabbed my "cell phone" and whipped it out of the way, dumping soy sauce all over the table and myself. Our server was incredibly sweet and brought a stack of napkins to help me clean up my mess, as well as a glass filled with soda water to help me clean the splotch off my jeans. The whole time, he was cheerful and gracious and didn't make me feel even the slightest bit guilty for inconveniencing him. Secondly, my husband and I aren't particularly fond of avocado, and the staff at Sushi Cortaro said they'd have no problem making the rolls special for us so as not to contain any of the nasty stuff. :P This won them major points, because being willing to tweak offerings on the all you can eat menu is something a lot of places won't do. Finally, our sushi came out reasonably quickly after we'd ordered. Service was really quick, and the fish was very, very fresh. Oh, and the miso soup was great, too: piping hot and just the right balance of flavours. And the bad: The one serious issue that I had with my experience at Sushi Cortaro was the INSANE amount of cucumber that was stuffed into our rolls. We had to poke some of it out so that we could actually taste anything else, and ended up with a mountainous pile of discarded cucumber. At first, we were kind of upset by it, especially because we were worried we'd be charged extra for "wasting" food off of the all you can eat menu (one of the rules is that you have to eat everything). But the hostess was really apologetic about it, and explained that the chefs hadn't noticed our "no avocado" note until after they'd prepared the rolls. So... they'd removed the avocado, and attempted to fill up the empty space with the only other cost-effective option: cucumber. We weren't charged anything extra, and they assured us that the chefs would be more conservative with how much cucumber they added the next time. :) Besides that one hang-up, we were REALLY impressed with Sushi Cortaro, and are eagerly anticipating another visit. Hopefully I'll be able to update my review within the next few weeks once we've gone back, and can give them the one missing star which I'm pretty sure they deserve but which I don't feel comfortable giving them just yet.

Sushi on Cortaro? In Marana? Yep, and it ROCKS! I was sooo glad when we got serious sushi up this way after having to drive "into town" for years. Now, we've got Sushi Cortaro, and it is absolutely wonderful! Friendly, fast service; fresh fish, imaginative and more "traditional" sushi, killer tempura...I can't rave enough about it! PLEASE come up and try it, because we want it to be here for a loooooooooooooong time! It's worth the drive, as many have apparently noticed, judging by all the rave reviews!
(5)Gretchen W.
First time at this little Sushi spot. I didn't even know you could find sushi in this part of town! Friends and I were looking for somewhere to eat close to an event in Marana and happened upon Sushi Cortaro. The decor is a little boring and stark. I've gotten progressively annoyed at Sushi places in town that feel the need to have televisions everywhere in the restaurant. I honestly don't want to see infomercials for hairspray while I'm paying $50 for sushi. Just not appetizing or inviting. Have some actual decor and make give me an experience instead of distracting from the food. THE FOOD! I ordered the all-you-can-eat (AYCE) sushi mostly because the rolls I like are usually fairly expensive and would be well over the $19.95 cost of the AYCE. My husband had the Beef Teriyaki teppan, and my other friends ordered bento boxes. The bento boxes seemed like they were filled with very yummy things and my friends seemed to enjoy them quite much. My husband wasn't super pleased with his Beef Teriyaki. He said that the temperature was way too cold, and there really wasn't much to it volume-wise. This is what he orders everytime I drag him to a new sushi restaurant so he has quite a few versions to compare it to. (note: he never sends food back because he's always worried what they'll do to it, lol). Now, my Sushi on the otherhand was positively delicious. I had the spicy scallop nigiri, salmon nigiri, eel nigiri, dragon roll, and salmon skin roll. Each were really really great. The freshness of the fish and brilliant flavor/texture combos were out of this world. The service was great. We were seated quickly and the drinks were rarely ever empty or even close to empty. I would love to give this place another shot, maybe without my husband (shhh).

Nice. When you walk inside it's quite a surprise - very nice place Food is awesome too. My new favorite Sushi place.
(5)Meagan S.
This is the second time we've been here and everything was once again delicious! The salmon sashimi was so fresh and tasty! I like the quail egg shooters too. The service is fantastic. They are attentive, friendly and prompt! We're looking forward to going again. I also love the orange slices at the end of the meal. It's a perfect touch!
(5)Jenna C.
Great sushi. I had a bad experience a couple years ago but gave them another shot and this is my first choice for sushi. Friendly people and prices are reasonable.
(5)Bonnie D.
awesome and friendly service. great food. we had the all you can eat and the spicy tuna rolls are huge and delicious.
(5)John D.
Sushi Cotaro is hidden away behind a car wash but it's a find worth searching out. My wife and I had both the Pretty Boy and Fantasy Rolls and both were excellent. All of the sushi is moderately priced and the menu includes a full-page picture guide to all the different sushi with a description of what ingredients are in each roll. Our waitress was very attentive and the restaurant's ambiance was very relaxed despite going in there during lunchtime.

On any other day but today, I would give Sushi Cortaro at least 4 stars, but today, I am irritated and disappointed in a restaurant that I eat at AT LEAST twice a week...at least I used to. Sushi Cortaro has 2 of my favorite rolls on their 1/2 price lunch menu, which is why I go there so often (who wouldn't want 1/2 price sushi, right!?) Well, today is February 14...Valentine's Day...not a bank holiday where offices are closed...a regular work day where people wear red and celebrate the ones they love...but today, Sushi Cortaro decided it's a holiday worthy of NO 1/2 price sushi. Funny thing is they decided today was a holiday worthy of no 1/2 price sushi AFTER we sat down and ordered our food. It wasn't until I got the check and noticed that I was charged full-price for my rolls...thinking he was confused, I got the waiter's attention, he came over, and I pointed out that I was charged full-price, not 1/2, to which he responded that today is a holiday and they aren't doing the 1/2 price lunch menu...and he pointed to a sign on the door that was NOT there when we walked in. He continued to tell us that the manager made the decision AFTER we sat down and ordered but never told us - is that even LEGAL!? After the waiter told us this, the table next to us, overhearing what he said, got up and left (five people at this table), and two other customers walked out, as well... So, basically it comes down to this...poor business practices cost you customers...and considering how many of my friends frequent Sushi Cortaro, after I tell them about my experience today, we won't be going back. Guess I need to find a new sushi restaurant... Suggestions welcome! UPDATE: After writing this review, I called the restaurant and spoke to the manager. I explained to her what happened at lunch, and admitted that I am in there at least twice a week and apologized. She explained that her servers misunderstood her as far as having no "Happy Hour" and not having a Lunch Special. She gave me a $20 gift certificate good towards ANYTHING at the restaurant...which I have already used. Lesson learned...speak up when you are disappointed!!!
(3)Marc S.
First time I ever had sushi was here. I've tried other places from then and this place tops them all!
(5)Rochelle B.
Love their Pretty Boy roll and the all you can eat sushi when we go in. While I agree with another reviewer that the parking can be treacherous, it is worth walking across the parking lot a little farther for the rolls these guys make. Living on the other side of the mountains on the northwest side makes it conveniently located. After having sushi other places in Tucson, I am glad this place is on my side of town as it is my favorite!
(5)M.A. D.
I love the cucumber salad you get. I wish we had come during happy hour. Overall, good experience and nice staff.
(4)Michelle W.
I came for happy hour. I had ordered a few items to get me started while i looked at the menu. They were busy and it took a while to get someone's attention when I was ready to place my full order. It took 10 minutes to flag someone down. When they took my order they said it was too late for happy hour at 6:02. They said I should have tried harder to flag them down. For a restaurant in a smaller community I wouldn't think the could afford to treat local customers that way.
(2)M W.
The matt roll was delicious! Go check it out

If you happen to be near Cortaro and I-10 check out Sushi Cortaro. It is nestled between Chopstix Asian Diner, a martial arts school, and Native New Yorker. It has just opened and has that wonderful new restaurant feel. The decor is clean and bright, modern and pleasant. The staff is friendly and conscientious. Now on to the food. It was my first time dining there and I am always nervous trying out new sushi restaurants as I tend to find one that I like and stick with it. My previous favorite was more towards central Tucson, a good 40 minute drive for me to satisfy a sushi craving, so when I saw that a decent looking place had opened up nearby I thought I would give it a try. They have several non sushi options and I have heard that their lunch specials are quite amazing, but I was there for the sushi. So here it is. There are two ordering options, you can order from the regular sushi menu, which has sashimi, nigiri, and maki sushi, as well as a plentiful variety of rolls. The other option is to order from the all you can eat menu, which offers a majority of the options from the regular menu plus appetizers. I decided to share with my mother and we ordered from the regular menu. I ordered freshwater eel, tuna sashimi, and a variety of rolls along with shrimp shumai and a seaweed salad as and appetizer. The shumai were tender and steaming and well presented. The seaweed salad was delicious, nutty and slightly tangy. The sushi was presented on a large boat with plenty of wasabi and pickled ginger. The tuna was beautiful, red and tender. The eel was done perfectly (and is one of my favorites). The rolls were presented perfectly and wrapped well. They held together and everything tasted fresh. The prices were reasonable, the service was incredible and the atmosphere was pleasant. All in all a great dining experience that was beyond my expectations.
(4)C C.
This place was surprisingly good. Everyone at my table of 5 loved their food. The wait staff was on it! Maybe because we were the only group in there. Sushi was great, and the portions were good for the price. The octopus salad was awesome!
(4)Ryan J.
Food is great, prices are good, and the staff is exceptional. Check out the happy hour to give it a try and you will be back.
(4)Lucy C.
Had lunch here with my family today (our second time) and we really enjoyed it! The service is awesome! I believe our server today was Ryan and he was very much on top of things! After he brought the miso soup, he brought a bowl of ice for the kids to cool down their soup without us asking, just to give you an example of the great service. One of my kids got the kid's shrimp tempura and the rest of us got sushi. The tempura dish is pretty big for a kid's portion and my son enjoyed it. Their sushi is very fresh, delicious, and presented well. Definetely recommend!!
(5)frank b.
Just devoured a California roll, Vegas and Banzai roll. All killer. Amazing delish. Got it to go and drank an Ichiban while I waited. So glad I hit this place up. Will be back for sure.

I checked this place out because I am just dying to find a good sushi place in the Northwest side! We ended up there on a Saturday night and the place had patrons but it wasn't packed and we were seated right away. The place looked really new and had a faint new paint or furniture smell. We ask the server when they were opened and she tells us 4 months ago! There is a bar, sushi bar, and the usual dining area. The decor is nice and modern, but nothing exciting. The servers were definitely nice and attentive, but I feel that for a night that wasn't packed, we kept getting different servers asking the same thing... maybe they need to communicate with one another... We go with the All You Can Eat Sushi (AYCES) for $19.95... and mind you I don't typically go with this because there's all these rules- can't share with non-"all you can eat" people, if you have leftovers, they'll charge, etc. etc. Plus, I know the menu selection for the AYCES is limited to the general stuff. So, what I do is order things with no or less rice so it doesn't fill me up ;) Okay.. to the food- for the two of us we had veg/shrimp tempura, edamame, gyoza, yakitori, nigiri- salmon, yellowtail, red clam, maguro, unagi, mackeral, rolls- rainbow and catepillar. The tempura was nice and crispy but maybe a little too much batter. Edamame was yummy- it came hot with sea salt sprinkled on top. Gyoza was "eh"... I could do without...and the chicken yakitori was hot and flavorful. Sushi- the great thing is that they didn't pack it with rice. But out of all the sushi, the salmon was definitely the freshest- and it just melted in your mouth. Usually unagi (eel) is my absolute fav, but the salmon did it for me. The quality of the rest were pretty good. The bill came out to about $50 with a couple beers added to our meal. For all that way ate and what the price would have been ala carte, the AYCES price totally helped us out. I would definitely go back and try some of their specialty items next time we're there!
(3)Kat P.
My husband and I are extremely picky when it comes to food, service, portions and price. Sushi Cortaro earns 5 stars for meeting and exceeding our expectations. Service was prompt, super friendly and very knowledgeable. The decor was modern, clean and comfortable. The fish was very fresh and delicious (can we say melt in your mouth like butter sashimi?). The portions were generous and the price was fair and reasonable. We left feeling very full and happy to have found our new sushi place.
(5)Mike S.
All the fish was very fresh and arrived swiftly even with several people customers in the restaurant. Service was efficient and courteous and the waitstaff was never far from the table. Prices were in the fair range, but the best deal was $20.95/person for all-you-can-eat sushi, which included appetizers, soup, rolls, and niguri sushi. The kids had the opportunity ayce and my wife and I had the chef's special sashimi boat, which they adjusted for my needs and wants. I give this place a thumbs up and 5 stars! (and we were only down in Tucson to visit and see Tombstone and Biosphere2 with the grandkids). If it wasn't so far from Phoenix, we would come back on a very regular basis!
(5)Kai R.
Staff was friendly but the food was was dissapointing. Ordered Sushi a la cart and the cuts of the fish were horrible ... small, skimpy and just looked amateurish. The salmon skin roll was missing the yamagobo (a key ingredient). Very dissapointed especially since it got such a high review here on yelp. Will not go there again for sushi
(1)Amanda C.
Love this place. Great service, great atmosphere, and really great sushi!
(5)Chelsea L.
I cant say enough about this place! Its never that crowded for lunch and the service is amazing. ITs so clean and usually doesnt have that not so fresh fishy smell. (no one likes that) The sushi is so fresh and good! I have never tasted anything unsavory. The miso starter is great and the eel is extremely tasty. The booths are big and its just a classy joint. The only thing i dont love is the large boat the food comes out on if you order a lot. its meant to be cute but i could leave the boat and just take a plate.
(5)Aidea S.
Absolutely had a nirvana moment with fresh haddock. I honestly have never had it so fresh before in my life! It was incredible! Also fresh tuna and oysters the other day, Fay the Chef has spoiled us! This place is absolutely the BEST!!!! Just ask this chef to give you his best and he will! THIS PLACE will absolutely spoil YOU if you let them! GREAT for HAPPY HOUR!!!!
(5)Akinarei G.
Move over, Sushi Gardens. Sushi Coratro is newer, hipper, and fresher with a friendly staff and over the top, excellent sushi. And they don't scrimp like the other places do.
(5)Judy H.
Visiting for business, and asked for sushi recommendation from front desk clerk at Days Inn just around the corner. Glad we asked! The makis were fresh and delicious and neatly made. The portions were large, but the pieces were just the right size - not too big. Great if you're on a date and don't want to be making a mess! The miso soup that came with the order was very tasty and good edamame.
(4)LG M.
Excellent service and food. Very nice atmosphere with a bar.We were visiting friends in Tucson and decided to try Cortaro Sushi. We had the cucumber salad and sashimi with the godzilar roll. Very good. We will stop agaim
(4)Jr K.
I have never had better service anywhere!! The sushi was AWESOME! I have recommended this place to several people and never has anyone not like it. Everyone says it's their new favorite place. Highly recommend!
(5)L T.
What a rip off! Very disappointed, the sushi was blah. I don't mind paying a lot for quality sushi, but this place has no quality nor quantity. The rolls were full of rice. The gyoza was deep fried, not steamed. The udon soup noodle and teriyaki chicken bowl was super (temperature) hot that it burn your mouth. After 10 minutes the soup noodle was still super hot. Making it hard to taste the flavor of the broth. I would not come back to this place.
(1)Ann R.
This is a wonderful place to enjoy really good quality sushi! I have been most everywhere in Tucson and can't really find a comparison for the friendly staff and great food! Give it a try and you won't be disappointed!
(5)Kenyon N.
My favorite and only Japanese restaurant I eat at in Tucson
(5)Karen W.
Been here many times and have always had great service and fresh, delicious sushi. I also really like the squid salad, always fresh, nice presentation. Like it better than sushi garden and great happy hour
(5)Dan A.
it was good! and its nice to have a place on that side of Tucson. the service was good and the all you can eat for 20 is a great deal. worth checkn out
(3)L C.
very friendly environment, food was excellent, staff was awesome. We were seated right away as we got in. The place was very clean and organized. The prices are reasonable. Would definately recommend to others.
(5)KJ B.
don't waste your money here, there are better places to dump $60+ on a dinner for two fish was dry and bland - amazingly even the fried rolls are dry and tasteless... Saturday night and the place was empty aside from two tables... should have taken the hint not to sit down
(1)Holly S.
Sushi Cortaro actually has much better ambiance , and is much more intimate. I love on the South side on Tucson, so it is quite a drive, that is why I usually end up at Sushi Garden. (but they are ok too!)....just .......not soft and date like..... I may have to eat there one more time before I leave. I am into sashimi, (minus the rice) and other things I have not tried. I LOVE this place the salmon will melt in your mouth. People that work there are so polite and attentive. Much more laid back that Sushi Garben, but they do have TV's and a kick ass sushi bar........I have seen Heather Rowe one of our favorite TV local female newscasters for channel 13 there several times......(We lova ya Dan!!). She was quite polite....
(5)Karen D.
Recommended by a local and it was absolutely amazing. Delicious drinks and fresh tasting and creative sushi. I posted pics of our huge selection!!! We couldn't decide so we ordered like 6 rolls. Would definitely recommend and return
(5)Richa S.
Sushi rice wasn't that tasty. We ordered 7 rolls... each were just "meh" in flavor. The presentation of sushi arriving on their boats and bridges is cute though. I wouldn't necessarily come back to this place though. It wasn't as tasty as the other reviews made it to be.
(3)Allen P.
Please see the picture of how much they charge if you leave any rice. Service is totally ridiculous. The food came out in a slow fashion. The albacore taste like imitated chicken. If you like to spend a ton of money on trash food, then come here please! Oh yea by the way, other customers left after the long wait and I had to flag someone down to get my order taken.
(1)Keith D.
A wonderful little place with unexpectedly good sushi. The staff are all very friendly and the service is great. I have only had the sushi and would imagine that all of their dishes are yummy.
(4)Kevin L.
If you love rice with your sushi, and LOTS of it, you would love the "sushi" here! If you love finding bones in your salmon nigiri, you should come here! If you love overly breaded and fried food with little real content, you should come here! If you like being monitored ensuring you do not waste any food, you should come here! If you know nothing about sushi, but like sauces, colors, poor lighting, 100 types of roles (basically California roles with random items and sauces put on top of it with a clever name) and an un-inviting atmosphere, you would love it here! Okay I'm done being sarcastic. My friends opted to come here instead of Sushi on Oracle tonight, which is fine since I have never been here before. I am surprised at the number of positive reviews this place has gotten. While the quality of the fish is fair, there is WAY too much rice on their sushi. Their fried food items are meant to get you full, not for you to taste the food. Their gyoza is filled with vegetables and fried whole, the type you would find in a bag at your local supermart, not the typical gyoza with the thin skin and pork filling which is pan seared that you would find at a true Japanese establishment. The calamari is 70% breading and oil. Unfortunately, it is clearly apparent to me that this restaurant focuses on how to provide quantity over quality, and to maximize their profit at the expense of giving their customers a better experience. Their AYCE selection is mediocore at best, lacking items and options that you would find at other similar restaurants. Also, the setting and ambience is tacky and unwelcoming. Obviously this is not your typical well seasoned "sushi restaurant" like Sushi on Oracle or Kazoku, but in Tucson, it might just survive just fine. Not coming back here if you paid me to.

Great sushi and great prices! I love going to their lunch happy hour. Their sushi and service never disappoint!

YUMM!!! I am in sushi heaven! I just re-located here from San Diego last year and I have missed good sushi dearly! I just moved right by this little gem and the hubby and I decided to give it a try- man O Man!! Delicious rolls, clean establishment, amazing Miso soup and very reasonably priced! What could be better??

After reading all the rave reviews we finally decided to make the drive and check it out. Since our first time we've gone back again and again. Very fresh tasting which is not often the case for sushi in Tucson/Marana. We love their Unagi, salmon skin roll, caterpillar roll, shrimp tempura roll, tuna roll and their nigiri sushi has been perfect every time. Very friendly staff, and I love that I've never had to ask for a refill (a huge plus). Needless to say, this has become our sushi place even though it's a bit far of a drive, it's so worth it.

This is my local sushi place and it is pretty good. There are TV's on every wall which are a bit distracting if you are not interested in seeing ESPN during your meal. Sushi Cortaros' food is consistent and I enjoy the employees there. They are always quick to greet you and seat you. My favorite menu item is their treasure island, which is a raw tuna salad topped with masago, served in a martini glass. I don't think i've had an equivalent elsewhere. The treasure island it's a flavorful dish and looks pretty. During my last visit, I ordered the Chef Special spicy tuna roll topped with tuna tataki and it was a win! With the red masago on top, it is eye catching as well as tasty. They have Happy hour 3-7; with half off pricing on their most popular rolls. So if you are looking for a good sushi place this fits the bill. My only issue is that Sushi Cortaro parking can be terrible, the lot is shared with many other popular businesses; frequently you are parked so far away, you wonder if it's worth eating dinner there.

Place is a little far from where I live, but I was in the mood for AYCE and this place seemed to have pretty good praise. Came on a Saturday, and hubby and I got the AYCE. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. Nigiri: Unagi - can't really go wrong with this. Very yummy and only 1 order per person Spicy Scallop - nice amount of heat and very creamy. Delicious. Normal Scallop - not as nice as the spicy scallop. Mine had way too much mayo, I tasted that more than the mild scallop. Salmon - very yum. I really enjoyed it. Mackerel - knife work was a little messy, and was a bit more fishy than other places. Yellowtail - it was okay White fish - I have no idea what happened. It didn't taste like typical white fish, I actually wondered if I got the right fish. It was dry and a bit fishy. Least favorite of the bunch. I hope that was a fluke. Rolls: Rainbowroll and catepillar - dunno cuz that was hubby's and I didn't eat any. Standard fare and 1 order per person. Philly handroll - didn't realize we can turn any of the rolls into handrolls. I liked it. Ikasansai roll - marinated squid with mountain veggies. hubby ordered that, and I took one bite. It was nice. thought the squid would be chewy but it wasn't and nicely seasoned. Overall, it was enjoyable and quality of the fish wasn't bad. Because some of the nigiri I ordered wasn't as good as I thought, knocked it down to 4 stars. Will definitely come back again, and maybe try out some of their specialty rolls.

First time visit for lunch. Had half priced Tempura Roll and ice tea. Ice tea was good, 2 waitstaff kept it cheerfully filled. Roll was decent but I thought small (half price size?). You must order a drink to get lunch roll (limited selection) at half price. Half price roll W $2.35 ice tea, tax, and $1.00 tip put bill over $7.00. Good thing I wasn't that hungry. Probably will not return. Must spend over $8.00 to use CC.

Oh my goodness, yes! I am in love with this place. It was thanks to a friend of mine (also a Yelp fanatic over at Tivine Fitness) that this place was found. People might find this place to be questionable. It's right off the freeway. It's right in front o f a car wash. It's in a strip mall of all places. Goodness, why?! And it's way, way up north of Tucson so not so convenient for anybody in town. Literally, anybody. But it's worth the drive. What I like, in summary: 1. They offer the all you can eat sushi (AYCE) at under $21 2. The place is family-friendly (been three time and there are always little ones around) 3. The cuts are manageable -- nothing like stuffing your face with too-too large sushi 4. The service is swift and attentive 5. The variety of nigiri and rolls is expansive, specifically for Tucson 6. The wine and sake are decent 7. The mackerel is amazing. Just amazing 8. The crab salad? YES -- get it! This is officially my favorite sushi place in town and find that, yes -- it is worth the 30 minute drive to get there.

We frequent this Sushi place on a regular basis. It is convenient, consistently good food and reasonable prices. Service is great and food comes out fast. They have a lunch special with 50% off sushi rolls- but if you have left overs or want it to go you lose the discount....that is a bit odd. Nice place - they don't do anything any better than other Sushi places, but it is good. It is not on Cortaro Road, but rather off Arizona Pavillions drive behind the car wash.

Very friendly service and relatively fresh food. Great happy hour and late evening specials. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar--you get a bonus little sunomono salad before you order, and all of their sushi chefs are friendly and make good suggestions. Your meal always comes with miso, as well (no matter where you sit). I'm giving it 4 stars because it's good, but not excellent. The sushi is good, but not the freshest I've had. (Their Treasure Island made me change it from 3 stars to 4.... that thing is TASTY!) The service is good, but not excellent. The place is clean, but not immaculate. The happy hour is good, but they've had the same "Chef's Specials" up on the board since February. I'll definitely go back because I live and work on this side of town, but if I move somewhere else I probably won't go out of my way to come back.

We go 2 or 3 times a month, everything is fresh, delicious and consistently great. Best sushi in Tucson
(5)Karen C.
Our family was treated so great here! We had lots of different things, and all of it was delicious! Sushi, udon, tempura, gyoza, miso soup, salad (the ginger dressing was awesome!) my husband loved the volcano roll. Very happy and service was off the hook! We will be returning again!

I went looking for a new sushi restaurant after the other I frequented continued to disappoint me with poor service. Not only was the service at Sushi Cortaro exemplary the food was better than the other place I had been going to. I had to drive an extra 20 minutes each way but it was worthwhile.
(5)Roya M.
Love Sushi Cortaro, they always have fresh tasting sushi, their portions are great for their prices. Service is always great and friendly!

Ok so my three things I always cover when I go to a restaurant is 1. How clean is it 2. How is the service and 3. Of course how's the food .... So here we go... This restaurant has had great reviews and I gotta say it lived up to them. I went there at 6pm and got a booth... The restaurant had enough coverage and appeared to be very clean... Plates were cleared from the table once emptied in a timely matter ... This leads me to the service. My waitress was very polite and sweet and visited the perfect amount during the meal to remove empty plates and just check if we needed anything. Now the food was wonderful... I ate a ton and was very very impressed... I tried 4 different rolls and loved each of them... I really loved the spicy crunchy tuna roll... Yum! I have not had anything better in Tucson .... Go there the next time you want sushi in Tucson!!!
(5)Andrea K.
The presentation of your bland, mediocre sushi will be the best thing about your meal. It certainly won't be the management who insults you when you try to diplomatically try to explain why you sent back a totally disgusting roll. I'm going back to Yoshimatsu.
(2)Alexis B.
By far the best sushi in tucson. Lovely owners and even better rolls. Everything is fresh, tasty and original. I really like the New Mexico roll because it is spicy. I have never had anything there that I don't like.
(5)Josh M.
Best sushi in Tucson. I go 3 times a week.
(5)Denise C.
This place is now my new favorite sushi restaurant. The food is fresh with a very large variety for every budget. Even the saki drinks were the largest I have ever seen anywhere. The staff is promo and very polite, friendly and efficient in every way a wait staff can be. The cleanliness is outstanding. No fishy smell inside the restaurant. Bottom line is great food. Great service. Great prices and specials. I highly recommend Sushi Cortaro to first time sushi goers and old pros. Yum yum yum!!!!!
(5)Stone L.
Sushi is good! Service not so good when it's busy! Especially Friday nights. Might I suggest earlier or a week day. Definitely not a place to take a date on Friday night. They really need to work on the service aspect.
(2)Michael K.
Great prices with great lunch specials. Great sushi, but it occasionally can be put together sloppily (and thus the 4 stars over 5). One of the sushi chefs is much better than the rest so we always try to sit by him at the bar. The staff is very friendly and prompt. However, it can get confusing as all servers seem to help out with all tables. I'm always hesitant on who to approach if help is needed. This is my wife's and my favorite sushi place in town.
(4)Peter O.
Awesome place!!! I've been coming here since they opened up a few years ago. The sushi is always fresh. The staff is friendly and always making sure that we are always being taken care of. By far the best sushi I've ever had, and wherever I'm at I always find my self comparing other sushi places to this one, right here in Tucson, AZ out of all places. Highly recommended. The Vegas and pretty boy rolls are our favorite.
(5)Taralyn R.
Sushi Cortaro is still the best sushi around. There are many reasons I prefer this place over others, such as Sushi Garden, Sushi on Oracle and Bushi. For starters, they have all the basics, and they do it right. The miso soup has the right combination of ingredients so that no one part is overpowering. The crab sunomo is perfect. The nigiri and sashimi are fresh and they don't skimp on the size of the regular rolls. Their specialty rolls and dishes are wonderful, and they don't over charge for them as other places do. I recommend you sit at the sushi bar if the size of your party allows it to get the best experience. I recommend you try the Treasure Island, which is ten times better than pictured, and the Lollipop roll for something a little different. If you're into enjoying a little spice, try the Arizona Roll. If you are looking for the happy hour and all you can eat prices of Sushi Garden, you will find the same here. However, if you are looking for drink specials as well as sushi (beyond saki and beer) this is not the place you are looking for.

This is quickly becoming my go-to local place when I'm on the northwest side of Tucson. This town is crowded with sushi places as of late, but Sushi Cortaro keeps it simple with high quality, thickly-sliced nigiri (I always end up ordering "just one more salmon"). Their rolls are also not skimpy on the fish, which I appreciate. The lunch specials here are excellent, as is the happy hour -- a true half-price list of many of the popular maki and nigiri. And the beer is $2, can't go wrong. While this is not a fancy place, it's solid in quality for the price, and WAY better than driving twenty minutes for an iffy experience at Foothills Sushi Garden. Recommended.

While their food, prices, and portions usually seem to be alright, their customer service is no longer what I would call good or even decent. The last two times I have been there I have received horrible customer service. The waitress was downright rude the last time I went. It was awfully embarrassing to myself to receive this kind of service, especially when I had been raving about this place to my two friends that I was with. They had never been there before and went only because I had said such great things. I will not be going back. Neither will my friends.

The oceans are empty and I am full, result of a successful sushi trip. Continuing the less than original naming tend to name a sushi place after the street it is located on is Sushi Cortarro. Walk in and you will see a few semicircular booths backing on to the window for dates, then many tables that can be moved to accommodate even large groups, a bar and of course a sushi bar. Sit down and the great service begins, your drink order is taken and delivered in seconds. There were 4 or 5 servers for this store front sized location. The Sushi menu has all of the usual favorites and some unique specials. There is a orange menu for a $20 All you can eat deal. The all you can heat has a few limitations, no more than 5 rolls per round per person, and if you have left overs you are charged an additional $5. There are some apps on the all you can eat, nigiri, rolls and some specialty rolls. The quality of fish was quite good as was the craftsmanship of the rolls. I was quite pleased when my ship of sushi arrived, boats are just fun! I really liked the large amounts of avocado in the rolls. Another great thing about this establishment is the picture menu's. They are so complete and descriptive I want to make a wallet version for all of my sushi trips . For all you can eat this is a solid deal, good quality and great service at a fair price.

I had to step it down a star. I still think the food is GREAT! But! their wait staff is a little to intense. At one point we had four servers at our table one to take one glass and another to take a plate and other to put food down. And at times they were all just standing around with nothing to do, while one waitress was working her butt off, but I think she was the boss lady, wasn't comfortable giving up some control.

Normally when I finish my sushi meal and I find it to be absolutely stupendous, I know it. This time I didn't "know" it. It certainly wasn't bad. It was just A-OK, like 3 stars says. The sushi we ordered was plated beautifully and was good, but not great. Some of the fish was even flavorless which was somewhat surprising. In retrospect, perhaps sitting at the bar is what made me give it 3 instead of 4. The ambiance of sitting bar-side and watching the sushi chefs create their masterpieces is all part of the experience. The actual restaurant is beautiful in it's modern decor, and I ALWAYS judge the cleanliness of a restaurant by its bathroom. I give the cleanliness an A+. I give the inside temperature a C-. Freakin' BURRR! Overall, I will go back. It's a convenient location for those living in Continental Ranch and certainly not bad enough to never go back. Perhaps a better lunch joint for my tastes.

I don't Yelp much. If I did, i would undoubtedly have atleast 637 check-ins to this specific eatery. I cant seem to remember to remove my phone from my pocket. All i can think of is the one-way ticket to Yum City that I am about to receive. Dare i say i am addicted? I have been frequenting this quaint establishment since shortly after their doors opened for the 1st time. I feel like they have really evolved from their days of awkward, over-bearing, almost hawk like staff members (as noted in early reviews). Now, they have set a much higher standard of friendly, "service with a smile" type of attention that keeps me coming back for more. Where to start? The sushi is always fresh and comes to my table in a fast fashion. Whether it be their delicious rolls, nigiri or sashimi. The tempura roll is especially good. The tempura is always flaky, light and crunchy. Never greasy. The appetizers are also hot and fresh. The miso soup is always hot and soothing. My beverage rarely runs dry. As a matter of fact i always seem to get refilled even in the waning moments of my stay. I always feel the urgent need to consume this beverage as to not waste a perfectly good glass of iced tea. Which is a very good brew by the way. Nice and dark, even with ice. No tan colored water here. Pure flavor. I cant speak for their all you can eat menu. I do know the selection is slightly smaller. What i do order, depending on quantity is always arranged nicely on a white plate or a solid wooden "ship of flavor" that literally will be sailed to my table if i get a little overzealous upon ordering. It doesnt bother me that the inside of this venue is a little plain. I do not dine for distractions. I do not require a giant flat screen TV in every corner surrounded by elaborate wallpaper and sculptures. The service and food speak for themselves. Marana officially has a leg-up on the sushi competition that's in Tucson. They do not seem to need 20 different locations and commercials on TV. You see the same faces every time you arrive and are always treated fair. I try to do the same for them.

I came here on a Saturday night, and the restaurant was fairly quiet, so my sister and I didn't have to wait for a table. We sat down and our server came immediately. He was quite friendly and always smiled and was happy to answer my questions. I ordered a spicy tuna hand roll, salmon skin roll and uni (sea urchin). My sister ordered a rainbow roll and a spicy tuna roll. The salmon skin hand-roll was good, freshly fried and they did not hold back on filling it from top to bottom. The spicy tuna hand-roll had the right amount of spice for me. The uni was fresh. The two rolls my sister ordered were also good, they were rolled tightly, so eating them was easy and clean. I dislike loosely rolled sushi as it falls apart and can get messy to eat. Overall, the sushi was very fresh, and service was fast and friendly. I would definitely come back, more specifically try out their happy hour menu.

My friend recommened coming here because it received good reviews. I wasn't too pleased with my experience. The parking situation can be disastrous. The restaurant shares the parking lot with other dining restaurants. Walking in to the establishment, give you a nice modern look. We sat at a table next to the wall partition. They have over-sized plants on the wall that poked me in the face every time I tried to turn my head. On to the food- The food is decent, not great. $19.99 for all you can eat sushi. I was drawn by the appetizers they offered. We ordered some calamari, egg rolls, and gyoza. The appetizers were not very consistent. We re-ordered some and they were either over-cooked or under-cooked from the previous dish. Sushi was average. Nothing outstanding or special. I ordered a Margarita. It came in what can only be mistaken for a toddlers sippy cup. The drink came in a plastic green cactus cup. Nothing sounds classy more than that!! The quality of the margarita could not have been better than the sushi. The waitress spilled water on my feet while refilling the drinks. She was apologetic, so I forgave that aspect of the experience. All in all..pretty disappointed. Probably won't come back. It's been fun, Sushi Cortaro.

It's the whole package in my opinion! Food, service, and price! You pay for both. Great service and great sushi!! I am a SUSHI FANATIC!!! I LOVE SUSHI!! Did I mention I am a foodie.... Sushi just happens to be on my top can't get away or resist category.. Well it is! I moved from the military base and use to go to Oishi and am sad that it burned down a few months ago... :o( So sad because James and Jeanette are the sweetest. That's another review. Sushi Cortaro I have NEVER had a bad experience and I wished I started Yelping earlier, but you would see that we are in there at least 2 a month if not more. I would really be there daily if I could, but financially not possible. My favorite is the soft crab roll. It is of goodness and perfection! The best thing about it is that they don't put cream cheese in it. All crab! I'm telling you try it and ignore the sprouting crab legs that make you wonder how you will tackle it with chopsticks. You can and must! Another must try is sit at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs there will greet you and create a small dish of cucumber crab perfection! It reminds me of my mother's Thai cucumber salad only splashed with crab. At the end of your dinner they thank you with a cute little orange cut into a unique design. Cleanses the palate and is simple and refreshing. Just as sushi was meant to be. Perfection! Hmmm... maybe I need to tell my hubby we're going out for dinner tonight!! :o) Jessie N

Awesome sushi ...the treasure island is super delicious and tasty. The sushi is fresh and great for takeout.!!

Lesson learned Sushi Cortaro. Came for the AYCE and learned a great lesson. Don't go wasting your pig-out space on rolls or the tempura appetizers. You will be sorry. Next time I'm sticking to the nigiri. The fish was fresh, and large thickish slices. Since it's AYCE, they could be super stingy on the fish and just stuff you with rice since they charge if you don't eat the rice or over order and waste food, however the salmon and yellowtail nigiri didn't disappoint. I was very disappointed that the scallop was like bay scallops in mayo-type sauce instead of straight up fresh slices of scallop which is what I was hoping for. Drinks are overpriced, miso soup was complimentary. They are serious about the wasting food thing. My friend left the zucchini and onion tempura behind and was seriously given the evil eye when the waitress asked if he was REALLY done. He felt bad enough to eat the zucchini and then proceed to hide the onion in a napkin for the rest of the time we were there. Will return and stick mainly to the nigiri, except for the caterpillar roll, that was just too delish.
