Fantastic carnitas tacos! They are essentially in a gas station and easy to find. I also had a shredded beef enchilada which was pretty good. If I'm ever back I will definitely get several carnitas tacos!

Oh yeah! Very tasty! At first, we thought we were making a mistake eating here because it's one of those little places attached to a gas station. But we were very surprised at how flavourful our meals were. They even make their own tortillas. I had the Papa Locos taco plate & my husband had chicken enchiladas. Both great.

You have got to have the California burrito I haven't had them in years and I finally found a place that has them this place is absolutely amazing and I will definitely be stopping here next time I go by. This is my new favorite place along the interstate must be a family owned business the people are very warm and friendly as if they own the place. Do yourself a favor and stop here it is delicious

Fantastic cheese and chicken enchiladas! Looks like a hole in the wall, but it's worth it! Sad that they dropped the kids menu.

I work in this area, so I am fortunate enough to sample Papa Locos about three times a week for the past 5 years. The owners ensure that consistency and quality are very high. They are friendly and they care. I have sampled everything on the menu. Chips are amazing, making some of the best nachos I have ever eaten! None of that soy "queso" slime here. All ingredients are real and fresh. Each meat stands on its own (except maybe the fish) especially the Carne Asada. It is worth the cost upgrade. Perfect cuts of Angus Beef slightly salty and marinated in spice. Chicken Fajita burrito stands tall with its whole white breast meat perfectly seasoned. Love the beans also! They are fabulous basic refried beans (made here). The salsa bar has something for everyone. Try the hot one with obvious little black bits from the roasting process. Mild is exactly that. Basic tomato if you are a softer palate. The burgers stand above the crowd with solid heavy meats. These pull away from the competition in the details like how the bun is grilled and how each part is melted together to form amazing flavor pairs. Room for improvement? Of the vast menu choices I could think of very few things to improve. Avoid the churros - store bought with some strange sauces inside. I found the "Enchilocos" a bit dry and uneventful. French fries are slightly on the weak soggy side. For having hundreds of choices they make magic in the space they occupy. Best of class for certain.

My son was skeptical about this place since this place is located at the gas station. Well, he was wrong. This is the best Mexican Food place in Tucson area. We have been going there since early 2013. I love fish Tacos and chorizo con huevos. Good service and I love the pico de gallo they have. And it is great that you can order online and pick them up later. =)

Yum yum and yum. Very good food. And they offer a miltary discount...added bonus. My 7 year old son asks to go there at leat twice a week. You wont be disappointed. Enchilada style taquitos are a fave. But havent had anything i didn't like yet.

Love this place! There's no waiter so it's not fancy, but it's great food and the people behind the counter are super nice. Haven't had a bad dish yet. Great burritos!

For a little place they have good food. Friendly staff, nice little place, I would recommend it.

  • Nikky P.

The fish tacos were really good. I guess that's one of the menu items people come here for. The restaurant is located in the gas station, which is actually pretty cool because Papa Locos does not have a liquor licence, which just means you get to walk to the beer cooler in the gas station and grab something yourself. Great staff. Cool little place.

We positively love this place. Unassuming (it's adjacent to a convenience store). Small (there are about 10 tables). Delicious (the best verde enchilada sauce in Tucson). On a whim, we decided to stop in and try this place. We wanted quick Mexican food, and Rancho Rustico (the other Mexican joint in Rita Ranch) is a bit pricey. It's pretty cute, small. The menu colorful and straightforward. They seemed to have a good variety of both Mexican fare and American. (burgers, etc). You order at the counter. Pay at the counter. But not a lot! Two enchilada platters, two drinks for only $25. There is a fresh bar of pickled hot onions/carrots/peppers and several different FRESH salsas that are out of this world. My favorite is the bean and cheese chimichanga, enchilada style w/the verde sauce. It's ON POINT. Just enough crispy. Just enough spicy. Just enough DELICIOUS to keep us coming back. But there's one last thing. One miraculously gorgeous thing, that you must try as you exit. The churrrrrrros. Holy crap. I mean. I can't even speak thinking about them. They're cooked to perfect. Run for Papa Locos!

Papa Locos can only be considered Mexican food in the same way chili cheese dogs are German food or beef dip sandwiches are French food. While this place cooks up some decent flavors and definite guilt laden comfort food it won't satisfy everyone's Mexican cravings. I wouldn't go so far as to call it junk food because we're not talking fast food chain slop but it IS connected to a gas station convenience store. The food mostly seems to be cooked to order (unless you show up in the hour before they close, then its 50-50). Sometimes the carne asada seems a little too crispy, like it's been reheated on the flat top after having been previously cooked. Other times the fries can come out half done or the cheese half melted on their nachos. Good thing about them is they'll usually right their wrongs. This is a total munchies based 4:20-inspired type of menu. Their version of a western bacon cheeseburger, green chile and jack cheese burger, breakfast burritos, enchilada style chimichangas and their signature enchilocos (crispy tacos smothered in enchilada sauce, cheese and crema) are some of my favorites. Their salsa bar is nice and well stocked. They also have a good selection of bottled sodas. Again, not the most authentic but some tasty guilty pleasures (when they're on). Plus you can do some grocery shopping and get gas while waiting for your food. A true bachelor's one stop shop.

Hard to believe some of the best Mexican food is found inside a gas station, but don't let the looks fool you. Not a whole lot to say other than some amazing Mexican food. Never had a disappointing meal yet. Great taste, nice presentation, restaurant is always clean, and the prices are excellent. Almost half of what I've paid at some fancier Mexican restaurants that weren't near as good. Definitely give them a try.

Good not great. What you would expect from a small Mexican food shop. Sonora dogs we really good though

  • CJ F.

Yum. Good food. Nice staff. Close to home... We have tried half the menu and we've liked it all.... Never eaten inside though. We always take it home, but the inside is cuter than you'd expect... for a place inside a gas station.

Don't judge a book by its cover, and don't judge a Mexican restaurant by its building. That's a difficult request to make when you pull into the parking lot and see a structure shared by Papa Locos, a gas station convenience store, and a barber shop. Once you get over your initial skepticism, you step inside and you're transported to a place serving up some of the best Mexican food Tucson has to offer. Not only that, but the interior of the restaurant is actually spotless---the staff clearly takes pride in the food and the upkeep of the place. The standout menu item at Papa Locos is the fish burrito. If you like fish tacos, you'll love the fish burrito. The fish, which is grilled instead of fried, is always tender and perfectly-seasoned, and it's mixed with coleslaw, pico de gallo, lettuce, rice, and a spicy mayo. Inside a giant, chewy tortilla, the flavors blend together perfectly, and for a brief moment (until your head catches up with your stomach), you'll wish you had a second burrito after you finish the first one. The California burrito and the fajita burrito are my two other favorite burritos. The California is simple, but incredibly filling: carne asada, cheese, French fries, and pico de gallo. The saltiness of the cheese is balanced out by the acidity of the pico de gallo, and the potatoes kind of soak up all the deliciousness. The fajita burrito with a generous portion of carne asada, grilled peppers and onions, and guacamole is exactly what you'd expect, so I won't elaborate on that. The surprise menu item is the green chile cheeseburger, and it's quite possibly the best one you'll find outside of New Mexico. Roasted chiles, melted cheese, shredded lettuce, chopped onions and tomatoes, and spicy mayo sit atop a toasted bun with a hand-formed burger patty. The burger is so good that you forget that you're eating it at a Mexican restaurant in a gas station. All of the standard Mexican fare at Papa Locos is also tasty. I can personally vouch for the enchiladas (red is better than green), the chimichangas, and the tacos. I've somehow managed to not try any of the sandwiches or Sonoran hot dogs, but I've heard from co-workers that the Sonoran dogs are very good. Don't miss the full salsa bar (right next to the door) with 4-5 different salsas, pico de gallo, radishes, peppers, cilantro and onions, and lime wedges.

Here's another sweet and small local eatery with outdoor seating. I had the veggie taco and it was loaded with veggies and very tasty. The salsa and chips were mighty fine, too. The location is inside a market so you might drive right by and not notice it. But it's surely worth the stop.

We stopped here because of all the great reviews here on yelp and they didn't lie! This place was delicious!!! We highly recommend it!

Yeah !!!! The Zonie Cheese Steak is fantastic!!! I had an issue with the consistency because there was a point they hardly put meat in it but now it's better then ever!! It must have been the cook. Hopefully they keep it consistent this time because it is well worth it if you get it done right. I took a picture of how it should be if you get one. I'm excited to start going again.

Every frequent Yelper has experienced the disappointment of researching a new restaurant to visit in a unfamiliar city, then pulling up in the parking lot only to be confronted with something completely different than what they imagined. When this occurs, you must resist the urge to turn and run. Trust the Yelp. At 7:15 pm in the dark, I drove right past what appeared to be just another gas station on the corner of nowhere on the outskirts of Tucson. Where was Papa Loco's - all I saw was a Conoco? We pulled a U-turn and drove by again. I still didn't see anything but my wife thought she saw a sign for Papa's. We pulled into the parking lot and drove up to a small restaurant taking up about 1/3 of the gas station convenience store. I was initially concerned that this was not the type of place I was seeking. Then a soothing voice whispered in my ear, "Trust the Yelp." You've already read too many words that have nothing to do with the food, so I'll simply say this - fresh, homemade, authentic, fun, and delicious. I have no idea if Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives has ever featured this little restaurant, but it's exactly the type of place that warrants that type of recognition. The prices are right, the salsa bar has a ton of variety, the restaurant is clean, there is a nice patio that wraps around the little restaurant, and after the closing time the kitchen crew sings loudly in Spanish to the radio - not in an annoying way, but in a "we really enjoy working here and we all like our coworkers" kind of way. If you're driving through Tucson, put this place on your itinerary. It's definitely on mine when I return.

This place serves great tasting food at a reasonable price!!! I was blown away that it was connected to a gas station. Don't let that stop you. Loved it. Great staff too!! Too bad I don't live here. I'd eat here more often.

Went in this morning with the nino to try their breakfast fare. I decided to give the bacon, egg, potato, and cheese burrito and it was some quality goodness. They have a very nice, but small, salsa bar. Tried the tomatillo, roasted red, and their hot option and they were all great. This place is just awesome. Support small business establishments. They need our monies.

  • Karin K.

First off, the salsa bar is across from the counter under the silver lid. And no, you don't need cash even though there is an ATM outside... And yes, free soda refills... I had the taco fritos plate with beef. I really liked that the tacos shells were crunchy. The rice and beans weren't anything special, but the meat and taco shells more than made up for it. It's a good place to sit and relax after a busy day out at Colossal Caves. The AC was cool, the staff was nice, and the food came out quickly. All very appreciated after walking around the Colossal Cave and the park. The salsa bar was sneaky, but so good! We tried a little of all the reds and they were all good. One looked spicier than the others, looked like it a lot of jalapeño seeds in it, and it had a great kick!

Tucked away from all civilization in the middle of the Sonoran desert southeast of Tucson sits the Papa Locos Tacos and Burgers. Ok, I'm being a bit dramatic, but the location is not ideal if you live in the city. In fact, the restaurant is attached to a gas station, so it feels less like a Mexican restaurant and more like a truck stop. However, this is the only bad thing I could find about this place. While not a full service restaurant, the service at Papa Locos is courteous and friendly. Expect your food to come out quickly, even during a busy time. There are multiple salsas and condiments to choose from free of charge. While the dining area is small and tables are less than comfortable if you're tall, it will not be a factor since you will be enthralled by the food and you will finish your meal faster than you thought possible. The food is absolutely delicious - I had al pastor burrito mucho, which came with rice and beans, and some chips on the side. Burrito was big enough for me, and the price is on point. I came with friends who swear by this place for lunch, and I am now hooked. Next time I will try one of their burgers.

Let me just start out by saying I don't even want to tell you about this place. Want it all to myself!! Ha ha . That being said this place has hands down the best Mexican food I have had in the area in along time. It tastes so authentic its amazing. I got an enchilada plate with rice and beans the boyfriend got the same thing. For under twenty dollars!! What!? You have to come and try this place . I have definitely found my new favorite restaurant. Come try it you won't regret it.

This place is so good! Food is awesome, service is good, and prices are great as well. It is attached to a gas station, but don't let that deter you. Quaint little seating area, inside and outside... decorated with some traditional Mexican decorations. Mexican music is lightly playing in the back, makes you feel like you're in Mexico :p They have bottled beverages from Mexico as well!

Our entire office just had lunch here, and everyone had great things to say about the food. I had the California burrito. I'm a fan of Nico's carne asada, but this version was better; better seasoned and better texture. The mix of meat, cheese, potatoes and salsa was perfect. My friend had the chimi with red sauce. The sauce was fantastic and the presentation beautiful, and by the way he was humming, I'd say he thoroughly enjoyed his meal. And the service was fast and friendly. We'll definitely be back.

A diamond in the rough! This gem looks so normal and common form the outside (it's connected to a gas station). But holy cow the food is amazing. This place probably has some of the best Mexican food I've had in Tucson. Their burritos are killer. Very big. Good meat portions. And tasty! The tortas are always good as well as the burgers. They have a salsa bar with a nice variety. The employees are nice, funny people. I visit this place at least once a week. I recommend for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! You won't be disappointed.

  • Jason N.

I continue to give this place my business because I have yet to have less than a five star experience in any of my visits here. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable. They always get my order perfectly despite the fact that I often have an order of $30-40+. I've tried a couple of breakfast burritos, the tacos locos with carne asada, a carne asada torta, a green chile burger, the rice, the chips and salsa... all perfect. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. Those who make it a point to venture down to south 4th ave and try Mi Nidito or one of the other various popular Mexican restaurants in town are completely wasting their time. Not to say Tucson is devoid of quality Mexican restaurants because, well, it's Tucson. But that should be a good indicator of how good this place it. They throw their own spin on the food as they seem to want to bring various styles of Mexican food to the table. There is also an amazing salsa station that allows me to help my food come together and gives it the level of spiciness (where it burns both ends.... you know what I mean) that I prefer. I admit, there are other family-owned Mexican food establishments across town that I would like to try one day, but with this place in my neighborhood, I don't see the point. Simply one of my favorite restaurants in Pima County and I will still make the trek to this place regardless of where I reside in southwest Arizona.

A Great Mexican and Burger Joint out in Rita Ranch. I tried the Carne Asada Burrito and the Arizona Burger which we added green chilies to. The ingredients tasted fresh, the burger was juicy and it had a fresh baked bun. I don't live around that side of town but whenever I'm near I'll be sure to stop here.

Fantastic Mexican food at fair prices. Small dining area and it's attached to a gas station. Not a place I would be inclined to visit normally but the reviews are right, this place is great!

I went in with some people from work since it is close to the tech park. I'm surprised to see such a high average review rating. I might have come here on my own based on the reviews. I ordered an al pastor taco plate, which comes with a drink. The pork was tough and the tacos were otherwise just ok. Tough/cheap beef and pork is a common problem in Mexican restaurants, so you should usually get chicken or ground beef. The refried beans and rice were fine. The mild salsas were edible but the chips were poor. The highlight of the meal was actually the Hires rootbeer out of the machine. It's hard to find a decent rootbeer these days.

Their ground beef soft tacos (add cilantro) are pretty darn good and reasonable priced!

Never around this part of town but think we found our go to spot for great homemade Mexican food on the cheap the next time we're around here. Staff was great too! Don't let the outside fool ya...the restaurant part is quaint and the food is worth going out of your way.

I am so bummed I discovered this place as I was in the process of moving. I originally ordered because the reviews were pretty good and they delivered in Rita ranch. Their tacos and burritos were phenomenal! I ate there everyday for lunch after that. Very fast delivery too :)

  • Benjy S.

When I came here I was excited, I've heard good about this place till I placed a Togo order. I ordered the fish tacos and in 1 order comes 2 tacos. I should have checked then and there but didn't. Came home realized there were 2 tacos total in my 2 orderes. The tacos were very small as we'll I finished them in like 2 bites and cost almost 5 bucks?! It's ridiculous the service is poor as we'll. can't even ask for a water to go without getting attitude.

Since I am the Duchess, I owe the place a review. There is not much over in the Rita Ranch area to spice up your dining out routine...and this little spot is a gem! I love placing my order on-line from the office at the end of the day and running in to this curious little spot on my way home to pick up a quick dinner. Ordering on-line is a breeze and you can make comments about special orders/requests. I was quickly hooked. Most likely you would drive right past the place, not noticing it, or dismissing any gas station food. Yes, it is a restaurant in a gas station, get over it....yes, the gas station also has a barber shop....curious and strange all mixed together. There is a covered patio to dine out on...as well, as many locals gathered in the front, drinking their gas station beer (try the tecate michaldea) while watching sports on a outdoor flat screen...one day a bunch of people had a crock pot plugged in and were playing horseshoes like at a family reunion.....all very different....but I am here for the food! And hey, if I do wish for an adult carbonated beverage, you can pick that up as well inside the gas station. My favorite are the crispy tacos in shredded beef or shredded chicken...they call that papa frito style...meat, cheese, hot sauce in a deep fried shell. I call it delicious. I was not a fan of the "actual" papa frito taco which presses ground beef into the shell, forming a block or patty of meat...but that is just my preference. I am also big into the California burriotos...carne asada burrito stuffed with meat, french fries and cheese. Wunderbar! Nice salsa bar! The curdito is good and spicy. They marinate the pastor for the tortas for days on end... They also have a curious thing called enchi-locos-fresh masa folded over cheese or meat which is deep fried. I am yet to experience it. The burgers look good, esp. the green chili burger. The Sonoran dog was just okay. The quesadilla was just like any other, never really met one I disliked. However, the Cali burrito and crispy tacos keep me running back, and back, and back! I want to try the Sopes, but they are not on the online ordering system... Feel free to dine in, they also deliver to a small area (see webpage) and they have breakfast.

some of the best mexican food in Tucson. especially outstanding for the price. yes, the gas station location may concern you, but don't let it. the red chile sauce is excellent, and I had one of the best chimichangas and the best sonoran dog ever. try it, you'll like it!

Imagine getting such great food from a gas station. The food at Papa Locos is some if the best Mexican food I have had. Tue service is great the people that work here are great. Tonight I tried something new. Green Chili Enchiladas. They were fantastic. If you have not tried it here you should.

Found this joint on Yelp. Checked out the menu and placed an online order for pickup. It is 10 minutes from the house and had never heard of it. We will be back for sure. I ordered a Sonoran dog and the taco combo. My first sonoran dog so I have nothing to compare it to but it was good.As far as the tacos, I loved the made fresh daily corn tortillas! I added a squirt of lime and they were delicious. Wife had the chimi. When I asked her how it was the response was "it's all gone". When I prodded her a little she said it was delicious. Our daughter had the taquitos and a churro. She was happy to share a taquito and a tiny bite of the churro. The filing in the churro was perfect. The food was ready faster than stated and it was a successful dinner.

We've now been here four times, and the food just keeps getting better. I've tried the veggie burrito (loaded with delicious grilled veggies!), the bean and cheese (flavorful beans), and the burrito mucho with chicken (already reviewed--fabulous!). Both the green and red sauce are rich and layered--amazing, dense flavor. Our daughter has ordered the huevos rancheros twice now, and she's really picky. Regarding that dish, the fried potatoes are some of the best I've ever had. I highly recommend you give Papa Locos a try. I'll check back in once I've sampled more menu items.

Sooooo you may be a little hesitant to eat here because this place is attached to a gas station, but it's awesome! My fiancé works in the area and tried it first and he loved it so much I had to made the trek to Rita Ranch to try it. I've had the carne asada tacos, the enchilocos, the sopes and the carne asada burrito. Everything is good but I like the burrito and my fiancé always gets the chicken sopes. But you can't go wrong with anything since it's all pretty fresh. Must try if you are in the area.

Imagine you're writing a horror story. What would your setting be? Wouldn't you agree that a small gas station/ barber shop/ Mexican restaurant in a dark suburb would be the perfect setting? You'd think that would be the case, but it isn't in this little Rita Ranch gem. It's more like a little shiny oasis, a delicious, tasty oasis. OK, maybe I'm being a bit corny, but I'm super completely sold on this little place with tasty food. I happened to find out about it when my boss was eating a delicious smelling burrito about the size of her arm. It was the kind of food that smells so good it makes your stomach growl even though you aren't even hungry. I resisted for a while and then my boss had some tacos from there. Oh man, if I could bottle up that smell, I'd have a lot of taco lovers chasing me all over town. Uh . . . you know what I mean. I finally stopped by one morning when I was hungry but didn't have breakfast. I ordered a Sunrise Burrito (egg, potato and choice of meat) and added steak, beans and cheese. Along with a mild pico de gallo, it was yummy, yummy, yum-my! I also have to say that the people that work there are really, REALLY nice. I've been there several times but I've ordered the same thing each time. I'm told that the other food is just as delicious and it certainly looks and smells that way. Tips: - They now deliver for orders over $15. Check their website for delivery areas. - A couple of times I tried ordering & paying online but I've been "timed out" each time. Now I just call to place my order. - Yes, they deliver to the Science & Tech Park but don't start delivering until after 10:00 AM.

This place is the real deal for authentic Tucson Mexican food. For me it makes it even better that is attached to a gas station. This is definitely not health food but the quality and the flavorful taste will rock your world. I probably have been there around 10 to 15 times... everytime I come away very satisfied.

Yelp hasn't steered me wrong yet. I never would have set food in the restaurant in a gas station, which would have caused me to miss out on the best green chile cheeseburger I've had outside of New Mexico. So good I came back the next day and tried the California burrito, which was great too. It's nice and clean looking inside and definitely betrays its gas station setting, and that's a good thing. I will be returning again.

I've had several people that I work with tell me that I HAD to try Papa Locos when I got the chance. Well, we finally got the opportunity to drive out to the convenience market that houses Papa Locos, and WOW was it good! My husband had the green chile burger, and I had a carne asada torta. Both were served on what seemed to be homemade rolls that were delicious. The burger wasn't too thick (I hate that), and was perfectly grilled. The green chile strips were fresh and tasted great. The fries that came with the burger are fresh cut and pretty good too. My carne asada was tender and spiced just right. Oh! The fresh salsa bar! I had 8 or 9 different salsas, and the hot ones were the best I have ever tasted. They also had jalapenos that had been sliced, still with all their seeds, and marinated in something like soy sauce. Boy was it good. In fact, we were so impressed that we stopped by again, the very next day, on our way to the Pima County Fair. This time we tried the tacos, both hard and soft. We both prefered the hard shell ones, but the soft were still better than most other Mexican restaurants. I also loved the rice and beans. They had to both be homemade, and were done just the way I like. The seating area is just like a small restaurant. It was very comfortable and had some TV's going. And if you want a beer, just walk 5 yards over to the convenience portion of the building and buy some. The manager told us we could have up to a 6 pack per person at the table if you want to. I would put Papa Locos food up against some of the best Mexican food in Tucson, and if you give it a try, you won't be dissapointed.

I've eaten here a few times and since the food was exceptionally good today and because now a Yelper, I decided to write a review. We ended up here because it's the only place, besides Jerry Bob's, that serves breakfast after 11 am on Sunday's in the Rita Ranch area. My love ordered the chorizo omelet and I ordered the al pastor tacos. They were both delicious! The omelet was a good size and was filled with well-done, crispy choizo which added a nice texture. The side of potatoes were actually french fries that are combined with green bell peppers and onions. My tacos were amazing! The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the mixture of cilantro, white onion and shredded cabbage was perfect. We will definitely be back!

I'm giving this place a 5 star for their food, representation of the food was nicer than I have seen in expensive Mexican restaurants. It was our first time eating there and it won't be our last. The people that work here are really friendly.

After we spent all day at the Boneyard closeby, we were practically starving. I read about this place online, but wasn't sure what to think about it. Not sure if my 4 star rating is the result of almost starving to death, but what I do know is that the food they served me was just what I needed at the time. Expect fast food kind of mexican food, prepared right in front of you. It's cheap, though decent....

This place is awesome. I got the carne asada torta and the caramelos. The meat on both of them was tender and delicious. The torta was awesome, and the caramelos was awesome. AMPLE melted cheese and chicken on a small tortilla. I would recommend this place to anyone. WOW!!

I'm not much of a fast food eater, but out here in Rita Ranch there are so few food options of any kind, I had to try. Seriously, pretty good! I love the vibe. So casual and friendly. I feel like I'm at some desert country store rather than in Suburbia. While 99% of the time I'm a health "nut," every once in a while a hot dog won't kill ya right? With that in mind, the sonoran dogs are to die for. So yummy! The burritos are amazing, the tortillas soft and delicious. The salsas are awesome.

You want tacos or burros? You want a hamburger? You want a fancy shmancy chicken cordon bleu with creme brulee for dessert? Well two outta three ain't bad. And the food ain't too shabby either. In fact, I rather enjoyed everything I and my three sons had. I tried a burro with shredded beef, two of my kids got a burger, one got a hotdog, and we split some fries and chips with guacamole. They had a covered "bar" with salsas and fresh fixins (peppers, pico de gallo, limes, etc) to boot. The chips and fresh guac were wonderful! The burro was filled perfectly with rice, flavorful beans, and a good portion of tender, juicy, seasoned shredded beef in a warm soft tortilla. I dipped a few bites in the "hot" salsa (more of a medium for sure) and the kids enjoyed the mild. The burgers were burgers, but cooked well and rested on a good bun (always a plus) and came with fresh toppings of lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, and some others I can't recall - standard stuff, but all fresh and tasty. I "taste tested" everything - Dad's prerogative - to make sure the quality is there; everything was yummy! Papa Locos also had a ton of beverage selections as well, but we went standard fountain soda on this trip. Everything we had was delicious and we all got full, fast. Price was perfect as well - one basket of fries would have been enough for all three young boys. The added chips and guac was enough to make everyone overly full, but the flavor was so good I have NO regrets. The atmosphere was a perfect fit. This restaurant is in Rita Ranch, which is known for (I think) families. This place had a slightly above-average diner vibe on the inside, with booths and tables aplenty. There was some outside seating as well but the heat + humidity pushed me to stay inside this visit. The walls had some large prints of food and spices which sparked some conversation from my boys (always nice to deviate from Pokemon, Bey Blades, and Minecraft talk). The various cooks and counter service people were all friendly and smiling, offering banter about the food or help to customers who were knew to this place and what was good ("everything" was the answer). Now the fixins were sort of "hidden" in a covered cooler near the counter, but the cashier was kind enough to point out where they were to everyone and managed to keep it friendly despite the fact that they had to repeat this to everyone. Maybe I'm tainted by "bad help" at some places where you almost feel like a burden. But here, you felt welcomed and that felt good. About the condiments/add-on/fixins bar - there were a TON of cute little silver condiment cups lined up for holding all the add-ons. Luckily my kids were busy discussing Pokemon or something by the time the food came and so I controlled the add-ons. I could envision my table covered in 20+ little cups if they'd seen the selection first hand. So a few cups of salsa, some fresh lime for me to drizzle on my burro, and some other toppings - and my table had a reasonable 4 little cups. One happy cup for each of us happy customers. Yum!

The food I had was very good. I got the green chili enchiladas. The meat was very tasty as was the corn tortilla. The only down side was the green chili sauce on the enchiladas did not have a lot of flavor. They have a nice variety of hot sauces at the counter. Under the hood they have salsa, sauces and other condiments. The red hot sauce had a nice smokey flavor.

I have heard great things about this place for a long time but could not get passed the fact that it is in a gas station. In my mind, it would be like gas station food. I was wrong! We decided this morning to try the breakfast burritos. They were seriously the best breakfast burritos ever ! So tasty! With lots of different salsas to choose from. My husband picked them up but said the staff was friendly and they have a whole restaurant set up with booths and everything. If the rest of the food is as good as the breakfast burritos I can't wait to go back! When dinner time came tonight m, I couldn't help but wish we were ordering from here. Definitely left me wanting more of the delicious food!

Fabulous and to die for! Green enchilada sauce - you certainly don't see that very often. The condiment/salsa bar is the best I've ever seen. Three different hot salsas, one made with chiles and soy sauce which was great and totally unusual. Pickled onions, cabbage with oregano, all yummy and exceptional flavors with every one of the six different salsas. Fish tacos are not fried like every place else in town, tender and succulent. Best enchiladas I've ever had, one chicken and one shredded beef. You have to go here! Best Mexican in Tucson. Don't let the gas station ambiance throw you off!

I can't say enough about how much I love this place, nor how many times I've eaten there. Staff is always awesome, food is always amazing, and the price is always right. Try any of their various bacon-wrapped hot dogs, or tostadas, tacos, burros, etc. - everything is great!!

A burrito, a hair cut, and a beer on the patio? Sure. Why not? There have been three renditions of Mexican cafe at this location in the gas station on Rita Road. This one is so far the best. I have eaten here several times now (with new owners). The first time I went in thinking I'll try out their Mexican food, but got side-tracked by the extensive menu. I ended up having a green chile burger and added bacon. GREAT burger. Later, I took the kids and tried the Mexican food. I had shredded beef tacos, and got my son the tacos dorados(ground beef patty fried in the shell). Shells were crispy and the meat was well seasoned. The beans and rice were kind of tasteless and needed salt and salsa picante. My daughter had a Sonoran dog and said it was delicious considering she is a seasoned BK fan. The fries were also really good. The service is excellent and it has a small town feel when you eat there. The owners are around and really friendly too. UPDATE: Over the past year or so, we have eaten at Papa Locos about once a month and each time the food is good (I try something new each time). It is our go-to Mexican if we don't feel like driving far.

My husband and I really enjoy the food here, so much we have been there twice in three days. Yes, it's a little different being on the left hand side of a small market/gas station, but it's clean, comfortable and also has outside covered seating. I had a ground beef enchilada with verde sauce and I wanted to lick the plate clean! I've had a lot of fish tacos in my many years of traveling and theirs is in the top ten. My husband loved his Sonoran hot dog, the chili relleno and his breakfast burrito. We also liked that we could bring our Dachshund to dine with us on the patio. Since we are moving just a few miles east of there, I'm sure we will be back again and again.

Our 2nd visit today, had the green and red chile enchiladas. the portions were plenty and delicious, love the salsa bar. Husband and I will not think twice going back there again. Who cares that it's located in a gas station, good food is what counts and Papa Loco's has it. We've came for lunch the previous time, also good. As mentioned, the guys behind the counter and super friendly and won't hesitate to offer suggestions if you're stuck trying to decide what to eat from the extensive menu. I haven't tried breakfast yet, but the selection looked yummy.

This place is Mexican food for those who have never had mexican food I ordered Carne asada tacos..and the Carne was made from ground beef !! What a joke ...I threw the tacos away and now I laugh everytime I drive by ....haha ...this place should be ashamed to call themselves Mexican restaurant in Tucson Arizona

  • Suzy K.

Really good authentic mexican food! We've gotten take out several times now on Friday nights. The red and green enchilada sauce is earthy and just good. I loved my cheese enchilada, as I mentioned the sauce was great and the tortilla was just right. I appreciated that it wasn't just a blob of melted cheese it was much denser and tasty. Carne asada tacos were smoky and simple. Even the rice seemed more complex, wish i knew what the secret ingredient is! add a little salsa and its perfect. A hidden gem!

  • Gretchen W.

  • Mike M.

Yum. Good food. Nice staff. Close to home... We have tried half the menu and we've liked it all.... Never eaten inside though. We always take it home, but the inside is cuter than you'd expect... for a place inside a gas station.

some of the best mexican food in Tucson. especially outstanding for the price. yes, the gas station location may concern you, but don't let it. the red chile sauce is excellent, and I had one of the best chimichangas and the best sonoran dog ever. try it, you'll like it!

I am so bummed I discovered this place as I was in the process of moving. I originally ordered because the reviews were pretty good and they delivered in Rita ranch. Their tacos and burritos were phenomenal! I ate there everyday for lunch after that. Very fast delivery too :)

WOW!!

The food is great every time. The staff is very friendly. It's an nice little place to go to pick up your food to eat at home, especially if you live in the area. You can also sit outside and eat with your pooch if you like.
