I think they've progressed to a five-star. New management? I used to imagine the potential for this place and it seems that the new managers share my vision. The food is good and the service is fairly quick. I like the chips and salsa they offer before your order comes, though I wish they had pico de gallo or other fresh salsa. Try the horchata! And the potato burrito bowl! The environment has been improved -- more edgy, they cleaned up and opened up the place a bit -- more seating options, though some of the options aren't very functional. The tables have been stripped to their metal, which is very cool. The junk posters all over the walls have been cleared up a bit. It's actually a really cool, edgy place. A bit San Francisco-esque. (They've even increased the size of their burritos in the S.F. way.) Pancho Villa seems to have a bit of an identity crisis, though. They aspire to be a little sports bar, but I don't think it's working for them. They have a large TV and tons of beer posters hanging around. They play pretty good music and it's pretty loud (fun). They started opening their doors, which is more inviting (you used to have to go around to the side door). Hip late-night taqueria or sports bar with food on the side? You've gotta choose one, P.V. I vote for the hip; we need more of that around here. Tear down those cheesy posters! The coolest thing about Pancho Villa is that they have one of those little service windows with cheap late-night taquitos. Have they actually started using this little service window? I recently saw a crowd of 2 a.m., post-bar-goers munching on yummies out front, so I'm assuming yes. Speaking of 2 a.m., this was one of the few places open late on a Thursday night. Having lived in a large city before, the early shut-down of businesses in this city is disheartening. Thank goodness this yummy, fun place is open.

It appears this is one person's experience but I'd like to report our group of six's lunch as accurately as possible: It took an inordinate amount of time to get salsa for our chips. For at least 20 minutes we munched chips with no salsa. It took at least 10-15 minutes to take our order and drinks arrived probably another 10 minutes after that. The Cherry Pepsi was flat. We order Queso Fundido as an appetizer. It came out after the meal and it was basically a half melted block of Colby Jack. The food came out after probably 60 minutes (lunch time) and the dishes were incorrectly marked so that four of the six of us were given the incorrect meal. Our drinks sat empty for at least 30 minutes before anybody asked if we wanted refills. The chip refill came but we ended up self serving the salsa after another 10 minutes of waiting. The food was at best mediocre and made at least two of us feel awful later on. I ate chips and one burrito and then couldn't stomach any other food for the rest of the day. The entire, very simple lunch took over 1.5 hours. To me, that's unacceptable for a Mexican Food lunch. Plus: the waiter was very nice about the food mix up and took two burritos off the check. Overall: in my opinion the worst Mexican I've had in Tucson.

Food was served cold and waiter spent the whole time talking and laughing on the phone so he never came back to check on us. We were the only people in the whole place. FAIL

this place is scummy. My boyfriend ate there late at night, and found a worm on his last rolled taco, so he might have actually eaten one.

Good Mexican food. I've gone here a few times, and have enjoyed each of the things I've ordered. Nothing to rave about, but still tasty. This place is the epitome of a hole in the wall--the place needs some help on the upkeep, but it's okay since the food is good. Also, great service. Our waiter was very nice and accommodating and made sure our drinks were never empty.

Amazing food! Amazing staff! Great drinks. A MUST for after the bar. I come here often and everyone is so good to me. The mini chimis are so good!

This place WAS good. Cheap eats (2.50 bean burros) and good michelada. Went there with a friend on Saturday and we were literally the only people in the store. Everywhere else on 4th had a line out the door. Bean burro was now $5 and disgusting!!! Sooooo much sAlt too (and I love salt). They changed owners & menu seems similar if not the same but they aren't cooking it right I would avoid this place, sadly la Indita had just closed for the night or I would have been there We live in Tucson so I don't think anyone should have to settle for bad Mexican food.

Just ate here a couple of hours ago, and I must say, it was pretty good! I had a carne asada taco and the small quesadilla, and my friend ate the #11 combo, which was a cheese enchilada, ground beef taco and a chile relleno with rice, beans and sour cream. This was the first time I've tried a chile relleno, and it was really good. They had a help-yourself salsa bar with chopped onions and hot peppers, too. None of the salsas were great, but they weren't bad, either. The service wasn't very good, but there was only one waitress, and the place was totally full. I would go back, especially considering the fact that our bill totaled only $13!

So we're on vacation from Austin (where BTW we know a little about Mexican) and we stumble into this place. First the beautiful waitress is more than attentive and extremely anxious to serve. Our party of five chose different menu items all which were good to very good. The one exception was the tamales......WHICH WERE FANTASTIC!!!! My daughter is not a tamale eater but these tamales made a convert of her. Honest to God these were some of the best (and largest) tamales I've ever had. The atmosphere is what you might expect for cheap Mexican but very hard to beat. It made it to the must do list every time we're in town.

Much like another reviewer on here, the staff WAS super nice but it's likely to cover up for the poor food. (Though I believe the word is "inedible", not "in-eatable.") I remember coming here once a long time ago, but it was likely forgettable, much like this time. I won't bash a place solely for bad atmosphere or poor service so long as the food makes up for it. Unfortunately, there were no redeeming qualities in the food. We ordered chips and guacamole for the table. Half of the chips were burnt or overfried. I've never had a guacamole where the tomatoes, onions, and jalapeños outweighed the avocado, but this was the case. I ordered the green chile cheese enchiladas. We were told by a cook that the green chile sauce is jalapeño, tomatillo, cilantro, and onion. But the spice level caused me to use the entire stack of napkins to wipe away the sweat and drink the entire pitcher of water. My spice tolerance may be low, but all I could taste was heat and no flavor. I thought the rice and beans would be able to put out the fire. Unfortunately, their version of Spanish rice is that ketchup rice places try to pass off, and the beans were an uncooked mess. Nailing beans and rice should be a given for any Mexican place. The inexcusable part was taking a closer look and noticing two hairs that did not come from my head or anywhere else, for that matter. Awful food aside, the setup is quite dingy. We were sat next to some kind of cleaning closet at a wobbly table-swapped out for some kind of card table that needed to be thoroughly cleaned of mystery stains prior to seating. And the dude grating cheese in the kitchen stared at us a little too long until it got weird. There are plenty of Mexican restaurants in Tucson, but this happened to be an affordable stop for our group downtown. But I would plunk down a few more dollars for a decent meal anywhere else. I'm surprised La Fuente is gone and this place is still around. I give this place two stars because you can't give half a star and the staff was nice.

Let me just say that the breakfast burritos, especially the machaca burrito, are a-mazing. The eggs are freshly made, and not from some pre-made batter. You can really taste the difference in the texture of the eggs that you get. The steak is good, I've had better but it really works well in the context of the burrito. The potatoes are boiled nice and warm and have lots of flavor. The salsa bar is really good too. I like alternating bites with the mild green salsa and the spiciest red salsa. Honestly, I wouldn't get much else here. The beans look a little suspect. The lettuce and tomatoes and onions here look pretty disappointing. This place is much more expensive than your typical Mexican joint. If it's not to enjoy a delicious breakfast burrito, I don't think there is much else worthy in this place.

Gotta say, you want fast mexican food that doesn't seem like mexican fast food, and is definitely not like los crappos or ni-crap-os or the crapo shop, and is very fresh and has a full bar and not too bad beer selection... Give this place a try! Great character, not fancy, very chill, and open late. The menu is pretty extensive and the specials were great and cheap. This place may look like a typical taco place, but it is soooooo worth the try!

The staff was super nice. It can't save this place. My food was essentially in-eatable. Carne Asada bowl was full of burnt bits. Who would serve food this bad? The 'salsa' area was filled with odd, watery, mix of stuff that didn't taste right. I can say honestly, that this is the grossest most poorly maintained/decorated place I've ever seen in this country. There were plastic GARBAGE BAGS affixed to the ceiling... that had been there a while. The walls were painted too many shades to count. The seating area was super weird and the place was totally dingy. It was so hap-hazard that it was not surprising the food was a hot mess. Sadly, the place was saying they were in the process of getting their liquor license. IMO, they should use that money to actually make it a place that serves good food. just a thought....

The atmosphere and interior design definitely fits with this place in the thick of 4th Avenue shopping and dining. It is an older building, but has a very interesting feel to it. I did enjoy the artwork on the outside. It seemed they overdid posting specials and other items on the outside as it took away from some of the neat designs. Service was a little weird on my last visit. Two people in the kitchen and only one person handling the customers. The place was full, which doesn't mean there was many people because they is less than a dozen overall tables/booths. The one person definitely was the manager or the owner. He kept forgetting to take people's orders and not coming back with things that people requested. That happened at my table and at some of the others. He was nice. Food was average. The beans were alright, but got cold rather quickly. The chicken was a little dry but mixed with salsa and garnishes it was decent. The salsa bar is the best thing to say about this place. They were very good, especially the other garnishes like the cilantro and onions. I do not like places that finalize all transactions manually. It seemed that I was negotiating with the final price of my meal, even though it turned out to be a good price. If you pay with cash, prepare not to get a receipt. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. Solid 3 stars in my books.

This location is great! Right in the middle of 4th avenue, easily accessible. I love the food here. Everything is so authentic and the staff is super nice. They really know how to treat people and make you feel like a valued customer. I got the lunch special, which at the time was the three tacos meal (that came with a side of rice and beans) and a fountain drink. It all tasted amazing, and everything was fairly inexpensive. My only issue with this place is the fact that they do not have an air conditioner. So during the summer, their fans don't really cool the place up.

Mmmm I'm definitely a fan of Pancho Villas. I had stayed away at first due to a friend's disgruntled experience but I am so happy I decided to disregard that and give them a shot. So far I have stuck to the burritos and I get the Solitario almost every weekend. It's the simple breakfast burrito with just eggs, potatoes and cheese but it's delicious. I have also tried the California burrito and although tasty the meat was just a little bit on the tough side which was weird. I always order to go but it's nice that they have a walk-up window open late.

Martin's was closed and hubby and I hadn't eaten here in years and couldn't remember how we felt about it, so we decided to give it a try. Now we're sorry. I expect this is a great place to go when you're 19 and really drunk, but we weren't either of those things. I guess I should have taken the many spelling errors on the menus and the gross, peeling paint on the wall as signs that attention to detail was not high here. The radio was cranked all the way up, so that we had to yell over the commercials, and there was also a TV set to the food channel, so that we got to look at images of delicious meals while we suffered through a bad one. The guy at the counter was incredibly friendly--the restaurant was completely empty when we walked in--and took our drink orders immediately. Then he completely forgot to bring us drinks. We didn't get drinks until another guy came in, sat down, ordered, and received a drink, and then we had to ask again for drinks. I also noticed that when he refilled the water glasses, he rested the pitcher on each glass, which is an especially good way to transmit germs. Chips came out fast. Some of them were OK, and some of them were stale. I got a couple extra-hard ones plus one that was so soft it was disgusting. There's a small salsa bar and I chose the salsa that seemed to be marked as the hottest, but it wasn't especially hot. Hubby ordered a torta cubano, but said it wasn't like any cubano he'd ever had. He was particularly unhappy with the meat, which he said was so tough that each time he tried to take a bite out of the sandwich, the entire piece of meat came out. Once it was in his mouth, it was rubbery and hard to chew. I chose a chile relleno and an enchilada and similarly found that they were nothing like any rellenos or enchiladas I'd ever had before. The former was, in fact a chile omelet. It was not breaded and did not taste fried; as far as I could tell, it was literally just an egg wrapped around a whole pepper. I perceived no corn meal in the egg part, which was limp and rubbery. There was practically no cheese inside the pepper, and what was there was bland and cold. Overall, it was kind of gross and I couldn't finish it. The enchilada was tiny and similarly tasteless, with very little cheese and an unusual texture to the tortilla. The beans were all right. There were a lot of extra peppers on the plate too, and a small and surprisingly fresh salad, but I really would have like a nice, crisp, crunchy, cheesy relleno and a cheesy, tasty enchilada. We both experienced stomach pain upon leaving Pancho Villas, and will not be returning.

OMG. We have eaten at Pancho Villas Grill several times and it was always good food, but we ate there on 7/18/2015 and it was terrible. The place was not clean and the food was terrible. I had the carne asada taco taco plate and it was mostly fat and gristle and the beans and rice were cold and greasy. My wife had the potato taco taco plate and it was not even edible. the only thing good was the Cheese Quesadilla. Even the beer was warm. we left most of the food. We'll not return.

You know how you have that "weird friend"? You love her to death, but you have to admit that she can come across to others as a little strange and off-putting? Pancho Villas is my weird Mexican restaurant friend. The food is legit. They have delicious enchiladas, ceviche, burritos, and quesadillas. Nom nom nom. Portions are huge, and prices are reasonable. The margaritas are the best--they come in HUGE glasses and are perfect. Also, they have a great salsa bar and complimentary chips*. Service is usually friendly and fun! A few times there with girlfriends, we've been served complimentary shots of tequila. Holla holla. There have been a few times, though, when things at Pancho Villas got weird. On one visit, the server asked us for drinks and kind of rushed along the ordering process without dropping off chips. So then after we ordered, I asked about the chips. That's when she informed me that they were OUT of tortilla chips. On a Thursday night. If I hadn't already put my order in, I might have considered going somewhere else. Let's be real, the chips and salsa are 50% of the reason I go out for Mexican food. I wish the server had just notified us at the beginning of our visit. It's good practice for servers to tell customers ASAP if they're out of something. (By the way, if they DO have chips and you ask for seconds, you will be charged $1.) Another time, our nice (but oddly theatrical) server suddenly, randomly turned the volume of the music up EXTREMELY loud... like uncomfortably loud, like IBTs-on-a-Friday-night-loud. My boyfriend and I didn't even bother trying to converse, and just ate our food as quickly as possible while silently wishing we'd had ear plugs. So, I guess I'd say, go to Pancho Villas, but keep an open mind and be prepared for things to get weird.

Bummer, Pancho. This place is so convenient-- right off 4th Ave-- open late, affordable, and authentic. So what's the deal, huh? Why the three stars? My friend and I had spent almost all day at IBTs during the 4th Ave Street Fair, drinking margaritas and tequila shots... so naturally, when hunger took over, tacos seemed the obvious choice. We wandered down to Pancho's, where the was a short line of other inebriated Street Fair goers also craving the same. We were greeted promptly and our order was taken right away: 3 carne asada taco combo plate with rice and beans ($7.50) and a red chile 2 tamale combo plate with rice and beans (8.99). The place was busy and gave us a few minutes to use the facilities: one unisex bathroom for the whole place. At least it was clean, even if it smelled ick. I hope if they do any sort of renovations, they consider adding a few bathrooms. Our order came up annnnnddd... they hadn't boxed it to go. We reminded them that we needed it to go, and they sent it back to the kitchen to be boxed. No biggie. However, we got back to IBTs (I gave the doorman one of our carne asada tacos), and sat down to dig in, we noticed the tamales had no meat in them and in fact, were very very sweet. Who ordered the sugar glazed tamale?? We tore apart the tamales, searching for the red chile, there was none. We had been duped and given the green chili corn tamales. I didn't eat a taco, but both friends ate them without complaint. The final bummer was that neither one of our combos came with pico de gallo, sour cream or guacamole as offered on their menu. No salsa was placed in to go containers. Even Filibertos/Humertos/Los Betos/Viva manages this! I do like Pancho Villa, I think their employees are friendly and they have a good business, but their quality control is lacking. Ensure the order is correct and throw in the expected condiments and we'll be cool as ceviche. Viva la carne asada!

OK, so where to start?? 1. The server was sitting texting on his phone for about 3 min. before he walked over to us. 2. When we received the free aps for ordering a beer, {I thought I would die laughing!} the 4 chimies, MINI chimies were the size of quarter- they were burnt and drenched in grease. In the middle was sour cream, 3 pieces of shredded lettuce and guacamole. So GROSS we didn't touch. 3. When my hard shell tacos came, the shell was completely burnt! I emptied the chicken etc out and just attempted to eat it without the shell. That "plate" $6.99, came with rice and beans- also did not eat, because everything tasted old. The meat was also burnt to a crisp! 4.The place needs a good cleaning and renovation. Moths dead on the windows, sticky tables, just a dirty, dirty, dirty place! 5. Not worth even the 5 min. it took to receive the food... I wonder why it only took 5 min. to get two "plates"..... Will never go back.

. This place is awesome, you have to try for yourself, I wasn't buying all the other criteria but again it is everyone else's opinion. This place is really humble, and small yet their food is amazing! I have tried about everything on the menu I just haven't found this app to post about their business, and thank God I did so I will be posting new photos when I come. Fernando our waiter is very kind and generous, very attentive, and funny. I love our service with him. (So he is getting a generous tip$$$). The chips are a bit hard because they use a thick and crunchy tortilla, (though in general I have braces anyway so it can be challenging for me) but it wouldn't hurt to ask them for warmer chips! ENDLESS CHIPS AND SALSA!! The salsa is amazingly delicious! They're are alot of options and choices from mild to medium, (my fav) and hot. Create your own chunky salsa by adding cilantro and onions jalapenos, lime etc...yummy! They have a variety of Mexican beer (though I do not drink) and cheap tequila. They have Coca-Cola products and their famous homemade horchata!! Soo Good! Like I said try their food and opinion for yourself...this place deserves a five star to me. Remember it's Pancho Villas Grill not Casa Molina or Los Betos LOL, it is unique

I really like this place, the service is always great and the food is really good. The reason for the 3star review is.....As we were about to leave, I saw the cook stick two Styrofoam containers in the microwave. Being the cook he should know how bad this is for the health of the customer. Makes me wonder what other shortcuts are being taken back there.

I have to say, while the service was very friendly and attentive, the food was just average tasting. I had a green tamale and it was plainly served with a little sweetness and corn. It wasn't bad but it wasn't special. The cheese enchilada, however, was very tough to chew.Overheated, perhaps? And I didn't care for the taste of the refried beans. The place is small and you have to go get your own salsa after you've give your chips. I guess that's OK but I would rather have it served from the kitchen. It's a no-frills, bare bones type of setting. I'm glad I ate here at least once but I probably won't be returning as I have so many other Mexican eateries that I love.

The star rating may go up after eating there again. The lunch we had was very good, but only after trying some of the items like the chilaquiles and machaca will we give it more stars. The lunch special was a GREAT deal! Two very nice and huge Sonoran hotdogs with a 16 oz. drink for $5.99. The hotdog meat itself seemed to be the authentic salchichas one finds in Mexico and was wrapped in bacon. The toppings (tomato, beans, grilled onions, crema, mustard, etc.) were just right. My wife's bean tostada was very very good and authentic: crisp corn tortilla topped with tasty refrijoles, crema, lettuce and tomato. To top it all off the salsa bar was a nice touch and quite good. Total bill? $8.50. The friendly concerned waitress helped as well. The menu has a number of real Mexican items, and I doubt any are the typical smothered-with-lettuce-and-kraft-cheese stuff that is all too common in Tucson.

I had to write an update we just went here on Sunday the day after Christmas with my mother in law. Unfortunately our service was not good I was really disappointed by the food. We had green corn tamales the first one was okay but kind of strange in a way we can't explain. The second one was so bitter that you we could barely stomach it. It was disappointing on top of it the sonoran dog my daughter ordered didn't come on the same bun it used too. The place was really slow and it shows by the lack of service. Too bad we enjoyed it much more last time. Unfortunately I think this may have been the last time we go there. Now onto new places.

Chile rellenos in the Tucson Area rated according to the Homeland Security Advisory System with three word descriptors. Pancho Villa's Bar and Grill: mediocrity with poblanos. Yellow See photos.

Man don't review a place if you've been there once. I've been going to this place for five years, mainly because it's conveintly located on 4th avenue. If it wasn't, then I don't really see the point in going since it is pretty mediocre Mexican food considering where we are. But still good! Usually nice and very friendly service, with the occasional disinterested, dull waitress. Sitting by the window and watching people is nice, and after you're done eating you can go get drunk with your buds on the ave in the sun.

Forget about Ziva's, this is where to come for mole, by far. More of it, lower price, better recipe, and support of local small business. Can't wait to try their pazole next time

Best salsa in Tucson! It's self-serve, but take the red salsa and mix it with the onion/cilantro pico de gallo. OMG!

So this review is LONG overdue. I have actually become a regular at this restaurant because I love the food so much and the prices are wonderful. I am a huge ceviche fan and although peruvian ceviche is my favorite I love mexican ceviche as well. Theirs is Ahhh mazing. It only has shrimp but its delish!! I always order two flour bean and cheese tacos and theyre great as well. They use shredded chedder as well as traditional Queso which is impossible to find north of the border usually. I would give this place five stars except for the fact that two of the last 5 times ive been there I've gotten this female waitress who is horrific. She takes forever to come to the table, never asks if you want drinks just asks for your order immediately, doesnt check on the table whatsoever and somehow BOTH times forgot that I asked for bean/cheese tacos with my ceviche. The last time I went they were out of shrimp and our waiter was very upset about it so it made me feel better that he cared. I tried the chicken tortilla soup and it was fantastic, the bowl was so large I took it home and had leftovers. I highly recommend the food at this place!! Come in on a friday night and youll most likely see me at my usual table!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
