Ok, here's the deal. The decor leaves little to be desired. I mean SO little that were it daytime I might consider wearing my sunglasses but at night I don't find that socially acceptable. The booths are dated, the artwork...well there isn't any, the walls are pink, the carpet is dingy, the place needs an Extreme Home Makeover Asian Restaurant edition! The food however, was pretty good! I was impressed given the few reviews and the spread of 1 to 5 stars. It sounds like it's definitely dependent on what you order, so let me break it down. I had vegetable egg foo young (soooo not good for you even though "vegetable" is in the name, but it reminds me of home, because my mom always ordered it), and chicken chow mein. I asked beforehand whether or not the chicken was white meat which I've found in Tucson is key. I also asked for light oil which my server seemed to understand. Both dishes came out relatively quick and were pretty darn enjoyable. The chicken chow mein was the better of the two, but the crispy noodles were kinda redic. I guess in Tucson you can't find those really thin ones like they sell in Asian supermarkets? Here they are wide and almost wonton-like...odd. In any case, I finished about 1/3 of each dish and was pretty satisfied after. The menu reads like the menu from a Chinese restaurant I frequented growing up. The servers speak VERY little English, but the place fit the bill. Oh, and the bill was cheap given the amount of food. I will surely be back to try more of the menu, and maybe they'll have painted by then?

I have never had a bad experience at Mei Mei. There wait staff is attentive, the atmosphere is nice, I love the huge gate. And there is the crab puffs. I would eat them forever! The entire menu is good, this is simply the best Chinese in the city and I went to college in Tucson so I know about the Chinese food scene. This is a great family restaurant and beats the heck out of the Panda of icky nearby... so enjoy the deliciousness that is Mei Mei Chinese Restaurant.

Whatever the owners are eating, I want it too! I am not a huge fan of the Americanized entrees here. Not because I don't love Americanized Chinese food but because it gets lost in translation. The frozen appetizers here are borderline undercooked always. But the soups - oh, the soups! Forget hot pot. The soups here are rocking! Not super concentrated or too watery or fatty broth with tons of steamed vegetables and some meat if you desire. Ask for chili sauce on the side, and you have something that is almost better than spicy noodle soup. My immune system was boosted 1000 times by this soup. They have about seven different kinds, and it's enough for a very hungry person - or about three full bowls of soup for $8 - basically, enough for 2 people.

Chicken Curry came with french fries, chicken, and what tasted to be old onions. Yes, I said french fries in the Chicken Curry. The fried rice tasted week-old. Mei Mei - me thinks not

I live very close to Mei Mei's and it is by far one of my fave Chinese food joints here on the West side. I've eaten a number of items on their menu and the General Tsao's is by far and away my favorite. The spicy sauce is full of layered flavor. I love how the chicken is nice and thinly sliced and lightly crunchy, unlike other restaurants that use those thick bite sized battered chicken bites. Their mongolian beef is also amazing, if a little onion heavy in my opinion. The staff are always extremely friendly and, since I'm a regular, they always greet me with big hugs and smiles and ask how I've been. I will never stop going here unless they close (which would be a crime in my opinion).

I used to live on this side of town, but recently was relocated to Oro Valley. Of all of the Chinese places I have ever eaten at, this is by far one of my favorites. They always recognize me (Not sure if that's a good or bad thing!) and are always willing to help. Their food is excellent, I recommend their chef specials with pot stickers! I have never had a bad meal and never gotten sick from food. The decor is nice, a little dated but the service and experience makes up for it 10 fold. Its a must-go for Chinese food in Tucson!

Could be 2.5 stars. Came here for lunch because I didn't want to go to a fast food place. Read the reviews and thought I'd give it a try. Update: It is no longer a $5.99 lunch special, it is a $6.59 lunch special. And to answer Mark's review, yes, their egg rolls are always soft and not so crunchy. I ate mine fresh and the only crunchy parts were the ends. They are veggie egg rolls, by the way. I ordered the kung pao chicken. It comes with diced carrots, water chestnuts, peanuts, bamboo shoots, and celery. The celery right away was a give away. To me, celery in Chinese food is a cheap filler choice by the chef and the flavor of celery does not complement any Chinese flavor at all. I do not like it when bamboo shoots are diced instead of sliced. And although it wasn't a tiny amount, the amount of water chestnuts and peanuts was not generous and a bit on the scant side. The sauce was soupy, not saucy. The dish was literally swimming in soup. Kung pao chicken is also supposed to be spicy. It was a little bit spicy. It came with the aforementioned egg rolls, and I opted for the lo mein instead of the fried rice. The lo mein hardly had any cabbage in it. The flavor was OK, nothing exciting, though. My recommendation is if you want to try this place, go with one of the apparently successful entrees that are mentioned in the other reviews, just don't choose the kung pao chicken. Service was very quick. I was the only one there at opening and I waited only five minutes. The chef's wife was very friendly. What astounds me is that she told me that Mei Mei has been there for 22 years. I thought that for a business to be there for that long they must have good food. Well, I was wishing that I had gone to Wendy's or What-A-Burger instead.

Sadly I have come to realize that one of my most favorite restaurants isn't as good as I first thought. However, it is still one of my favorites because of the location but over the months I've begun to realize that this restaurant lacked a variety of food, specifically tofu. 1 tofu dish? Really? While the other meaty entrees are still okay, they really aren't that great. I came in for lunch for the first time because I always take my food take out and the service and atmosphere did not ruin my dining experience. The only reason why I decided to bump Mei Mei down to a 3 star is that I have simply realized there is better Chinese food in Tucson. I ordered the lunch special which is a great deal at $4.99, you get a meat entree, rice, soup or an egg roll. I ordered the BBQ Pork and some szechuan Black Bean Tofu. The BBQ Pork was nothing like the picture, it contained the really fatty pieces and was dry. However, it was kind of good but just not what I was expecting. The tofu was extra saucy and starchy. It was okay but again, not what I expecting. However, service was great, the lady had some kick to her step and pricing was decent as well. I won't stop going to Mei Mei's but I will stop praising it.

Love love love this place! They have some really awesome dishes here: chicken lo mein, moo goo gai pan, beef and broccoli to name a few! Everything comes in portions that are perfect for a party of 3 or even 4. I wish they would deliver but still calling a head and picking it up if you are in the area is not a big deal. It's better to mention that they will go easy on the oil cause sometimes they use too much of it but it's always comes out delish no matter what you getting here. Worth a visit!

Went there for lunch today. Had the Mongolian beef lunch special. Was ok. Nothing great. Not allot of beef just a bunch of onions cut to thick. Huge chunks of onions.

First off, $5 lunch specials are a steal, made cook to order. I've only been here at lunch so my review could be biased but what cracks me up is the place looks like a mafia hideout from the grand theft auto video games. Dimly lit, looks like nobody eats here, etc...lol. Jokes aside the service is quick, perfect ghetto chinese takeout! words of advice: get lo mein over their fried rice, and get mongolian beef or orange chicken for the lunch special and if you order take out they NEVER give you a fork without you having to ask, your welcome

I love this place so much! Awesome food with awesome prices. You get so much food with the lunch special. Go to this place. The waitresses are also very nice and remember you.

We ordered takeout, and decided on the crab cheese puffs, an order of the General Tso's Beef, and an order of the Cantonese Fried Noodles with chicken, beef, and shrimp, and was told that it would be ready for pickup in 10 minutes. 10 minutes?? That's impressively FAST! When we arrived in the restaurant to pickup our dinner, we were greeted by a friendly and smiling woman. Our food was piping hot and smelled delicious while we drove home. The crab cheese puffs came with 10 pieces in our order, and they were delicious. I had been craving crab cheese all week, and this definitely satisfied my craving. The General Tso's beef came with peas and carrots, as well as rice. This dish was very flavorful and went well with the white rice. The fried noodles were authentic, crispy and yummy and covered in sauce. We inhaled our food and smiled with full stomachs. I definitely plan on ordering from Mei Mei again since it has great food and great prices.

Won't be back. If it wasn't bad enough that they wanted to charge an extra $1 to substitute carrots for bell peppers in a dish, I ended up getting the WORST stomach ache from the food. **sigh**

Update again: "But they can do good old fashioned American-Chinese food, like chicken chow mein (and I like that too), pretty good, though..." Never mind. Sometimes they can, sometimes they can't. Last time's crispy noodle chicken chow mein only deserved 1 star - soupy, nasty chicken bits, basically just celery and onions - but I won't be back, so I'll average it out to 2 and leave it at that.

You know what really rocks about Mei Mei is, they offer a 4.99 lunch special 7 days a week. Most places only do it during the week. Not Mei Mei- they serve up hot and spicy soup or egg flower and a heaping plate of tasty food with not one, but TWO egg rolls. Mei Mei is a wonderful eat in/take out restaurant in a small shopping center. Two people can get out for around $13 including hot green tea or delicious ice tea (free refills). The food is fresh and delicious and you can even eat quite healthy as they have bean curd options, broccoli and shrimp. There is a shark fin soup on the menu, and varieties of wonderful noodles, fried or steamed rice, Kung Pao chicken, and other staples. The hostesses often struggle a little with English but are quick to help and the food comes out fast. It looks like take-out is popular here especially with those lunch prices. The atmosphere is nothing to talk about, but it is relaxed and friendly. You get fortune cookies at the end, too.

The Americanized Chinese food here is on par with most chinese restaurants, but ask the owners to make something authentic or something they eat themselves and its amazing to say the least. Their bbq pork is moist and delicious. If you are lucky enough to try their roast pig you would think you were in hong kong! Even my trips to hong kong I don't think I've had better roast pig. The decor is straight out of china town, but the over the top friendly staff makes you forget the decor.

We have been going to Mei Mei for nearly 12 years. Normally we do take out but occasionally we eat in. The food is consistently good. This is a family owned business and our favorite Chinese food restaurant in town. The atmosphere is a bit dated but it is always clean, the service is great and the food is tasty.

I love this place for quick, good and cheap food! Their fried rice is delicious. I get shrimp lo-mein as my entree and fried rice as my side with an iced tea and delicious egg drop soup! :) I ask for a side of chili oil to add some spice as well. Good food, friendly service. Overall, great place. I avoid the restroom there though.

I may update this, as I have only eaten the take-out once. Anywho. Was looking for some takeout on a Friday night and decided to go ahead and check this place out. Like others have said. It is in a strip mall, and the atmosphere inside is your typical chinese-american set-up. There was only one table with people dining in, but about three of us ordering and the phone was ringing non-stop for placing orders (I figured that is a good sign). I decided on the first trip to stick to the typical basics, because if they can't make them right, was is the point of anything else? We ordered Kung Pao Pork and Orange Chicken and a bowl of Hot and Sour Soup. The order was ready within ten minutes which was nice. The soup was good, the veggies in it were really good. The kung pao pork was good. The spices were just right and it did not seem too greasy. The orange chicken had good flavor but not enough heat for my liking. I will probably try something else next time, (But only cause I want more heat, not because of bad taste). Overall, a stand up takeout place. They are quick, decent prices. And now I have a menu to call ahead :)

Can't beat $5 for lunch. The food came out fast and everything was good except for the fried rice (dry). I'll go again next time I want Chinese.

I picked up food from here last night for girls night in. This place is a hidden gem. The inside interior and the outside I'm not the most attractive ones in a little bit outdated but I think it's part of the charm when you walk into a place like that you know it's close to authentic as it might get here in Tucson. We had multiple dishes and all of them are great I especially remember the lo mein chicken and noodles are just delicious. If you are in the area or looking for some comfort food during movie night this is the perfect spot.

Worst Chinese food EVER! Too much $$$ for such a small portion. Pot stickers were burnt. Orange Chicken was very dry and chicken was hard.. However the wonton soup was pretty good. Won't ever waste my time or money to go there again.

loved it! the out side is pretty much getto and the in side is dated but the food was (with out sound like a teen age girl) OMG!. I DID NOT THINK it was going to be as good as it was but it was great will go back again

I hadn't planned on getting carryout but since I had to make a stop at Safeway, opted to get some lunch to go. The restaurant is small, and old looking inside. A fresh coat of paint and some wax on the floor could do wonders. Also a machine in the entrance where you put your thumb to discover your "sex power" kind of turned me off. But I was already there, so went ahead and ordered. They have lunch specials for about $7.00, they include soup, eggroll, entree, and steamed or fried rice. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken, and she offered to give an extra eggroll instead of the soup. I prefer fried rice and there was no extra charge (some places do charge extra for fried rice). Anyway, my wait was about 10 minutes which I didn't think was too bad. Usually Sweet and Sour chicken comes with green peppers, onions and some pineapple chunks. There was no green peppers, onion or pineapple. Not sure if they just forgot or if this is how it normally comes. Anyway, there were about 8-10 medium size pieces of chicken. The flavor was a little different than what I usually experience but in a good way. I really enjoyed the sweet and sour sauce which did not overwhelm the chicken. The fried rice was equally as flavorful. She did give me 2 eggrolls which were really springrolls (I like these better anyway) and they were good too. I wish they had been crunchier, not sure if they got soft because they were sitting in the rice or if they always come that way. Overall, I was happy with the entire meal and I will plan on going back there for lunch really soon!

The best Chinese food place to go! The fried rice is the best I have ever had! I recommend every one to try it!

I can say I didn't expect anything particularly special from the other reviews. I went here for lunch today-- I got egg flower soup, chicken lo lein, fried rice and 2 small egg rolls. The egg flower soup was disappointing. It barely had a taste to it and it also burned my mouth it was so hot. Not good. The chicken lo mein was better-- almost tasty. The fried rice was OK. The egg rolls were really extremely small-- I think thats why you get two. The inside is indeed dated. The only thing that really bothered me was the walls were pink. It was weird. When I was there--which was a friday at just before noon, there were 2 other tables with 4 people and 1 other table came in just as I was leaving. So I guess they have a steady business. They have a pretty big selection of entrees for lunch-- about 28 different ones in all. You get a choice of main entree, lo mein or fried rice and hot and sour or egg flower soup for $4.95. I would say that the food was definitely OK. Not all that great but OK. I cleaned my plate but it was because I was hungry not because it was wowing me good. Not sure if I will go back. There are alot better places to eat that will Wow me.

I have to say THANKS to yelp, I was able to read Ferdinand's review before I walked into this place. It does look a bit shaddy, okay... a lot shaddy. But in the world of Chinese Takeout, this place is a 4 for sure! I ordered the Mongolian Beef and asked for a bit of spicey hot.... it was perfect. It was really good and I have to say better than my regular takeout place. I was an out of towner eating hotel food for 4 days and was craving chinese, looked up Mei Mei on yelp from my phone in the parking lot. The woman who took my order was very nice. Food came out in less than 10 minutes and one person was dining in the restaurant and 2 people came in for takeout while I was waiting. All in all-- good eats and cheap too!

One of my favorite places in Tucson. I get food to go from here at least once a week. Wonderful sesame chicken, tasty fried rice, and AWESOME lo mein. I highly reccommend the food to anyone and everyone. The place is a little dingy and rundown inside so I rarely eat in the restraunt. Price is right and they have generous portions.

This is AUTHENTIC Chinese cooking people!!! Reminds me of the chinese restaurants in Cali where I am from. I love the owners and the service is fast and the food is always great, and consistent.

They have great lunch specials and even extend those lunch specials to the weekends, so there's no excuse to stop by and enjoy their food. Even if you do not get their lunch specials, the prices on their regular menu items are reasonable. They make amazing dishes and they are prepared and brought to your table quickly. The service there is also amazing. If you make a return trip, you're recognized as a regular and that's how they treat you. They are quite charming.

I found this place after visiting the St. Mary's hospital across the street. It looked very gritty, dirty and the interior is dated terribly, add to that, a very rude, discourteous greeter who took my order. 15 mins later, she hands me a bag saying, "Beef" is ready. I told her I don't eat Beef, that I ordered chicken. She goes on & on, never wanting to admit error. Well, 15 mins later, I get my chicken/veggies. I eat in the hospital & surprisingly it's pretty good. Not too greasy, great portions. I can't vouch for the other menu but I liked it. If you can get past the bad location, hideous interior & rude employees, you might find something you like. Then again, you might not.

American, Chinese, Swedish, I really don't care, this is the kind of taste that I'm looking for in Chinese food. I have not been to China nor have I lived among the Chinese, so for what I know it could be totally American. Nevertheless, today this was good food. The kung pow chicken was not swimming in the brown sauce, the orange chicken was not battered beyond recognition. The lunch special gave the option of rice, fried rice or lo mien. The service was fast, the food came out fast. It was pleasant. I may never adjust to a restaurant being in a strip mall next to a nail place, but that's for me to work out. The decor was not something from an Elizabeth Taylor movie, but I've seen worse. The floor and the tables were clean, everything that I saw was clean--didn't visit the bathrooms. We will return. You can bet your sweet bippy that I will be reporting back if there is a difference. Oh, and the egg rolls are more like lumpia, because of the wrappers, I like that.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
